(Slight retcon, if you can call it a retcon anyway. Our MC is actually given a promotion as a captain instead of simply calling it squad leader. Knights are usually inherently at lowest have the position equal to a squad captain and at highest is a general. Highest in command in this campaign is Prince Miedas though. With all that clarified, let's get on with the story. Oh, and before I forget, I will roll for any choices that requires rolling. Ask anything that is unclear to you about this story and I will answer as much as the MC would generally knows. Link to Thread 1: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2112205/#p2123762 )

There you sat in the cave, still clutching the gradually freezing dead body of Sir Reynault, both stunned by his death and the revelation he set upon you.

"The assassination of Prince Miedas....is under the order of the king himself....

The king himself ordered the death of his child? Why? What could he gain from it? What kind of plot could be transpiring in the background? These kinds of questions lingers around in your head, only interrupted by the groaning of the prince. He is waking up from his slumber on the cold hard floor of the cave. He seems agitated when he saw you holding the corpse of the general, understandably so.

"Wh-what is this?! Traitor! That man trusted you and you killed him! Do not think this transgression will go unpunished, you mutt! I shall bring your rotting head on a stake back to Lars after this campaign!"

"Traitor? Sir Reynault tried to assassinate you! I saved your life!", you said replying to the prince's accusation.

"You cur! Is it not enough that you must kill that man, you must also slander him?! You damnable fool! Enough with you, die traitor!"

The prince lunged towards you with his sword, and proceed to lose his footing. He unceremoniously fell to the ground face first, making a pained grunt before trying to stand up. The general must have knocked him in the head to put him to sleep, evidenced by his lack of balance. That did not stop him however as he charged at you again, only to fall down once more. His next attempt was a bit more successful than the last as he managed to finally swing his sword at you, though it was blocked with ease.

"Do you truly believe that I could kill Sir Reynault? Me? A regular soldier killing a battle hardened veteran unscathed? Think about it Prince Miedas, there is not a sliver of hope of me doing that."

The prince's resolve is weakening. An opening presents itself and he falls to the ground with a single leg sweep. You were thinking of pointing your sword to his neck, but settled with holding out your hand for him and helping him get up instead.

"The general killed himself. Look at the wound he had on his belly. He disemboweled himself with the dagger he is holding. If i was a traitor as you had said, it would be my sword that's drenched in his blood. Also, wasn't he the last person you're with before being knocked out?"

The prince sat down while holding his head. Despair starts overtaking him...

"I know...I just could not believe it. Me and Sir Reynault was closer than you think. He was a father figure to me, trained me, and to think that he would make an attempt on my life..."

"....he said that he did it under the king's direct order. Your father. Any idea on why that would be the case?", you asked.

"My father? He hates me because he sees me as weak yes...but to think that he would actually try to end my life..."

Suddenly, a knight walked into the cave, shocked by what he is seeing. The shaken prince however recollects himself and told the knight to ignore the details for now and to deal with the general's body first.

--------------------------------------

Sir Reynault's body was wrapped in cloth and buried in the snow for now. The mountain's climate shall preserve him to be brought back to Lars after the battle ends. The wolves have been dispatched of successfully with minimal damage suffered by the troops. The army moves on despite losing its' general. Confusion spread among the soldiers on how the general could have lost his life, but they were promised on the details after this campaign is over. With the information we have on our hand, the village of the barbarian tribe that fought against us is close. At the coming of dusk, we had already saw the wooden buildings and smokes rising ahead. On nightfall we strike.....

[cont.]
>>
>>2135831

Few barbarians patrol around the village, it is clear that they are not expecting their very own stronghold to be sieged. Perhaps the idea of a small army sneaking up on them in the very heart of the mountain is too outrageous for their savage minds. Most of the barbarian's fighting forces however are resting, or recuperating from their injuries from the last battle. So, a rude awakening is in order, no?

The troops managed to evade whatever meager amount of patrol in the village and each lit a torch. Soon the 450 or so men with torches at hand starts lighting up nearly every building in the village, starting from the houses, then to the barracks. Smokes are rising, and every men, women and child in the village starts gathering at the center of the village. The ones who failed to get out in time however, was not so fortunate. Those in the middle of the village makes for an easy target for the soldiers and knights who have regrouped. In the midst of the panic that engulfed the people of this village, steel death comes marching towards them out of the smokes. Any who resisted was cut down to size without hesitation, and soon, the village was at their mercy.

"HALT, MEN OF LARS!", a female voice shouted.

A woman in the usual barbarian combat attire (albeit slightly more decorated) and warpaint, flanked by 2 other barbarians arrived on the scene.

"Who is this? The your chief's wench? Is he too afraid to face us while his people are being slaughtered?", one of the soldiers said aloud, mocking the woman.

"Nay! I am this village's chief! We were lead by a strong man once, my husband, but Lars sent assassins to kill him not too long ago! You drew first blood men of Lars! And now you come to slaughter us all?"

Confusion sets across the soldiers? Lars instigated this war? Were we not here to cull the barbarian because of their increasing acts of aggression?

"I did not know savages like you are smart enough to make such lies. No matter, your life is already in our hands.", Prince Miedas replied.

"Our people are proud warriors, men of Lars, and we do not lie! Even so....it is true. Our lives are in your hand. If I am to ask one last act of mercy, I will ask for a trial by combat. If we win, we will bow down to your kingdom, but with our own set of demands. If we lose, we will concede to whatever terms you will give us..."

Why should we allow our forces to lose more men when we can end you all forever without needing to worry about any future uprisings?

>>
>>2138341

"From where I see it, you have no rights to make any request or demands. Your claim on Lars drawing first blood could also be just a ruse to buy you more time.", you replied to the tribe chief.

Her facial expression did not change but it is clear the negotiation is becoming more and more tense. The rising anger of the men accompanying her is becoming more and more apparent. One of them who looks to be the youngest of the two, almost jumped for your head had it not been for the other to stop him.

"....however, if you could show us proof that Lars truly are the first aggressor, we will consider your request.", Prince Miedas said, trying to lower the tension.

"Very well...come. I will show you.", the chief motioned you and Prince Miedas to follow her.

Most of the troops stayed at the village to secure the people as hostage while ten or so knights, among them are Sir Reynault's second in command, followed you and the prince.

How well do you know your father? What reason would he have to potentially provoke war with the kingdom of Lars? (if that is what hes called)

Maybe the while war was made so you could fall in battle while fighting them? How do you want to proceed with this? How long do you suppose we have until their main force could disengage from the from the front and reinforce the village?

You motioned Prince Miedas to walk further in the back of the group to talk to him.

"Forgive me for my rudeness, asking you to move further in the back and all, my lord but I need to ask you on a very sensitive subject. How well do you know your father?"

Prince Miedas' face which was calm now turned into a frown.

"Not much actually. He rarely talks to his sons unless it's about important matters. Usually it is for reporting to him about the success of the campaign we led and such. He was not as cold before the death of Queen Selene, my mother.", Prince Miedas answers, adding some sensitive information along the way. Perhaps he is putting a lot of trust in you seeing as you just saved him from certain death.

"And what do you think are the reasons Lars would want to provoke the barbarians?", you continued to question him.

"It baffles me too actually. Aside from increasing pillaging from them, there is no real reason to go all out and fight them this far to the north. This place does not have any notable advantages for us to acquire. The climate prevents extensive farming, and the mines are quite few. We could conscript these barbarians as soldiers of Lars, but would they be disciplined enough to join the military? The people of Lars also look down at savages from the north. Maybe all of these mysteries will be solved by itself in due time..."

Moments after that, the group reached a large pile of snow near the village.

"I knew it! You are merely stalling us you damned barbarians!", one of the knights shouted.

The tribe chief however stayed calm, and ordered her two men to dig the pile of snow. They pulled out two corpses clad in black attire.

"This is our proof. Examine it if you please..."

[Cont.]
>>
>>2138546

It is impossible to decide whether the paleness of the corpse is due to being preserved in the snow or it was there even befor its death, but one thing is certain, the disfigurement of the visage they possess are not inflicted to them after their death. The flesh of their face molded and distorted into something horrifying. Scar-filled body suggest a lifetime of torture and injuries, yet their body is robust and battle-ready. The only fatal injury this...thing...possess is one stab to the heart....

"You brought us here to see this monstrosity? I do not see any proof to your claim here!" Prince Miedas shouted, slightly agitated.

"On their back, there is a certain mark that I would be very sure you recognize.", she answers

Turning the body around, revealing jutting spines are a brand. This brand bears a striking resemblance to the royal sigil of Lars. The very one that is on the combat attire of the prince....

"These assassins you sent out to us moves as fast as lightning, melding into the darkness almost seamlessly. It relentlessly stalked the village for months, killing villagers and warriors, and coming back the next day unscathed, healed from all of the wounds inflicted to it in the day before. Then, two moons ago, at dusk, they attacked the village hall and murdered my husband.", the chief paused for a while....

"He however managed to kill one of them, killing it with a stab to the heart with his sword. We also found out that our tribe's relic was stolen by the other creature. We tracked it down as quickly as we can. Footprints and trails of blood were followed and a few good men died trying to retrieve the relic and kill this horrible beast."

"This proved nothing! You could just have mutilated some random villagers and branded them with Lars' royal sigil!", Prince Miedas retorted.

"Are you suggesting that we, gone out of our way to mutilate some poor soul's body, replicated your royal sigil, and killed our own leader to instigate a war with a kingdom that could easily decimate us? What would we gain from it?"

Prince Miedas and the knights were left speechless by this discovery. This is simply too much to take in all at once. Perhaps you should take over the negotiations...

>"Alright, we will keep our promise."

>"Corpses of freaks holds no weight to us. Surrender now and we may yet still be merciful to you."
>>
>>2138551
Discuss this with the prince and hear what he has to say, also who should be the champion? Not us since we suck at fighting and Sir Reynault didn't teach us shit, or even give us better gear before playing a quick game of Sudoku.

"Let's not break down just yet prince. You said it yourself, you do not know much about his majesty. What are the chances he have abominations working under him as assassins? Perhaps he aims to acquire this tribe's relic through the war all along? Either way, it is best if we settle the matter at hand first.", you said to the prince.

"Y-yes. As promised, we will agree to a trial by combat. Who do you wish to send as your champion?", Prince Miedas asked the tribe chief.

"I will-"

"No! I will be the tribe's champion, men of Lars!", the youngest of the two men following the tribe chief shouts, interrupting the older one.

"No Asmund, I cannot risk losing you too Asmund. It is enough I must lose your father. Let your uncle do it.",says the chief to the young man.

"My skill in battle is unparalleled by my peers. Are you saying this is not enough to defeat one meager soldier of Lars, mother? I have hold back for too long! These people slaughtered our men and burnt our village to the ground just now, do you not remember mother? I shall show these cowards the true strength of our tribe's warriors!", the young man replied.

The chief conceded, not able to hold back her son anymore. And so, come dawn, the duel shall start! Who will be sent to battle then?

Still, there might be some useful advice you could get from the prince before going to battle tomorrow. Surely, a genius in tactics such as him would have wonderful insights on your coming battle. To his tent then shall we?

As you passed by the burnt buildings to reach the prince's tent outside of the village, an old women approaches you.

"Heheheh... so you're one of those knights of Lars are you?"

"Indeed I am a proud knight of Lars. What do you want from me?", you asked her back.

"Oh nothing, just an old woman in the cold of the night because her's got burnt to the ground...keheheh!", her random cackling is creepy...

"A little bird told me that you will be the one fighting the chief's son tomorrow."

"What does that have anything to do with you?", you question her further.

"Well.....I just happen to be this village's oracle. I could give you an augury on the battle you will be in..."

"Bah! A proud knight of Lars such as I do not need such superstition! I shall best that child myself without any help from you, oracle!", you said out loud.

"Perhaps it is for the best....KEHEHEHEHEH!"

She gave another hearty cackle, but this time it is different. It did not stop. It only gets louder and louder, more ear-piercing by the second. You hold both of your hand on your ears but it did not help. Her eyes turned shining red, her physique seemingly getting larger and larger, towering above you before exploding in a blizzard of crows, pecking and clawing on your skin! The pain is unbearable and soon, you were left unconscious.

-------------------------------------------

"Sir Cain, Sir Cain! What in the blazes are you doing sleeping sleeping in here cold grounds? Did the barbarian's ale knocked you out good? Hah!"

You woke up to a band of soldier merrily laughing at you lying on the ground. You had no time to be angry at them however as the event that had just transpired still puzzles you. The moon still shining bright in the sky, signifying that it hasn't been long since you are knocked out. You feel your face and skin, not even a scratch is evident on it. Was it all just a bad dream?

"What's the matter Sir Cain? Worried that your pretty noble face to be damaged? Do not worry, you're as ugly as I remembered you yesterday!"

They continued to laugh at you, and you have half a mind to publicly flog them. As planned however, you moved to the prince's tent. There, the captain and the prince is discussing something. You approached them and...

"My prince! I have come here tonight to ask you for your insight on tomorrow's battle. Even though a knight of Lars such as I, moreover the one who was Sir Reynault's second-in-command, could easily defeat a barbarian, much less a child! But of course, I, Sir Cain would humbly request your advise on the battle as it would absolutely help secure my already high chance of winning, my lord!"

The prince and the captain sighs at the sight of you prattling about.

"Sadly I could not give you any insight on tomorrow's battle Sir Cain. The only thing I could hope is that you would not underestimate your opponent.", Prince Miedas answers.

"Well said my lord! Before I go however, I need to consult you on something. Before I reached here, I was met with an old hag claiming to be an oracle and offering an augury for tomorrow's battle. I declined of course, such superstition does not fit a knight such as I. Then she gave me a deafening laugh and burst into a storm of crows clawing and pecking me. Yet, when I came to, I was unharmed though clearly some time had past..."

"I am not very privy on the supernatural Sir Cain. Just focus on your battle tomorrow.", the prince answer, dismissing your worries.

-------------------------------------

It is dawn now. You stand there in the center of the village. It's inhabitant and soldiers alike gather to see this fateful duel. Will the future chief of the tribe wins and redeem the tribe, or will this be their final stand against the kingdom of Lars?

You use this opportunity to retreat and regain your footing as Asmund is too busy pleasing the crowd. When he realizes what you are up to, you had already regained your footing and ready to strike. This time, he is the one who charges at you. But this time, you are prepared for what's to come.

The young man, though quick on his foot and dexterous in his swings, is still wet behind the ears compared to a knight like you who had trained for years in the arts of combat and war. His swings are wild and without any form, easily dodged by someone with a trained eye such as yours.

You allowed him to make one large swing, which you evaded, and then you knocked him on the head with your sword's hilt. His body is clearly shaken by this blow, leaving him open for attacks. And attack you did! A swing from your longsword sliced a side of his stomach. The cut was not to deep though and he rises back up. You then....

[1/2 DC pass/fail, Round 3]

You do not intend to let him rest as you pressed the attack. A barrage of slices was delivered, but they are all blocked by Asmund who managed to raise his shield in time while kneeling down. Asmund delivers a shield bash straight at you as he springs back into the fight. You are forced on a defensive now, as his speed and dexterity that worked against himself just now are working to his advantage.

You are left with next to no opportunity to counter attack without lowering your guard. Steady as your arms are, it could not possibly hold against such relentless assault. And soon, your defense are broken. He delivers a deep cut on your shoulder. A surge of unnatural strength flows within your body, you feel faster, stronger, and everything seems to move slightly slower. (-1 DC)

>Return the flurry of swings he just gave you! (+1 DC, success will give you -2 DC next round)

>Use this newfound power to reposition yourself. (DC +2, fail will not result in a lost but a draw.)

[2/2 DC pass/fail, Round 4]

With newfound vigor, you swing your longsword at an incredible speed. As if the injury that was dealt to you was nothing, you maneuver easily through Asmund's counter strikes. He was not able to exploit even a single opening as you recover from your swings in a blink of an eye. In the eyes of the audience, you were leaving after images in every step you make.

He could not withstand such terrible assault however and Asmund finally dropped his guard. You follow it with an upward slash, causing a vertical wound from the waist to his shoulder. Blood sprays out, agonized look etched on his face. Yet, he is still standing....the next bout shall decide who's the winner...

DC 6 (-2)

[There is not much choice after the next round so I will be needing 3 rolls of 1d10 from you guys. The average must surpass the DC.]

[3/2 DC pass/fail, Round 5, Victory!]

As expected, Asmund could not have possibly withstand such a grievous injury and still put up a fight. A blow delivered while he is shielding is enough to push him back. In just a few strikes, Asmund's guard had already fallen, kneeling at your mercy.

The battle is over. Do you execute him, or spare him.

>Finish him

>Mercy

It's a good idea to try to build some sort of trust, and showing mercy is a good way to start.

"Killing you would bring more trouble than it's worth.", you said, unsheathing your longsword.

Asmund's head is lowered in shame as he accepts his loss. There is no point in him continuing this fight, seeing as how grievously injured he is. His uncle and mother lifts him up to treat his injuries. Suddenly, an old woman that you identified as the oracle, comes out from the crowd shouting angrily.

"NO! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO KILL HIM!"

She starts chanting unintelligible gibberish, and the morning sun retreats back beyond the mountains, as if time is moving backwards. In a few seconds, the sky turns as black as night, but with only one pale, lightless moon in the sky and no glimmering stars in sight. In the darkness, you can barely make see that the old woman's body starts to grow larger just as you had saw last night. This time however, it is not just her size that increases, her overall appearance also starts to change to that of a tall gangly humanoid covered with black fur. Her face turns into that of a beast, with blood red eyes, towering over even the largest barbarian you have ever seen in your life. But before you were able to make sense out of everything, your consciousness fades to black....
