Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest. On today's episode, we'll be continuing the realty-spanning adventure of Forrest Fox as he tries to end the machinations of various Haviks from multiple realities merging their Chaosrealms into one Ultra-Realm. In his quest to gather the six Kamidogu of Chaosrealm, he now finds himself wrapped up in a tournament in an alternate Netherrealm, forced to fight alongside Shang Tsung against the vile dark emperor Liu Kang, with not one but two Kamidogu up for the prize.

Our story continues now!

"The traitor, next," Liu declares, staring Kung Lao down.

"No," comes the reply from the undead Shaolin's lips, stunning all. "I will not fight."

The silence that follows is broken by condescending laughter from the throne. Many of the other revenants join their ruler as Liu Kang cups his chin and jeers, "What is the matter, Lao? Afraid?"

"I'll not participate in this tournament for your amusement," Lao replies somberly.

"Father," Ling says as she approaches, but Shang Tsung cuts her off as he storms up to him.

"What is wrong with you, you fool?! Do you not understand what is at stake?"

"I'll have nothing to do with your schemes either, sorcerer," Lao retorts, shaking the man's hand off of his arm. "I never agreed to help you."

"And what of your daughter, Shaolin? She was humiliated in her bout! If we lose, her soul and yours will be forever lost!"

At that, Ling brings up the blunt end of her staff and jabs it into Shang's shoulder, pushing him back. "Silence your tongue! I chose to fight, and my father has every right to choose not to." She looks up at him; his grey, cracked skin surrounding burning eyes stare into hers in a sympathetic plea. She nods in understanding. "If that is his choice, I will respect it."

"Thank you," Lao whispers.

"Enough!" Liu Kang says as he raises his hand. "If he will not fight, he is disqualified from your side; you may not call upon him to fight later, but his soul is still in the lot with all of you. Scorpion, I was to have you bring me his head with his precious hat upon it, but I will instead accept you destroying the one without skin."

Fox watches Scorpion as he steps into the ring. "Face me, flesh-corpse! Where are you hiding?"

After several seconds of silence and people looking around, they realize that Meat is gone. "Wait, where'd he go?" Jin asks as they all turn to inspect the area. Shang seems the most desperate of all to find him, but he is nowhere to be found.

"What game are you playing, sorcerer?" Liu asks.

"I am playing no game!" Shang calls from over his shoulder, clearly agitated by this latest development.

“He must’ve slipped off when we weren’t looking,” Jin theorizes.

“That’s not good,” Ling replies.

“No, it is not!” Shang shoots her a nasty look.

Liu, picking up on this irritable state, smirks and mocks his old foe. "With a pacifist and a coward, your side does not seem so strong anymore, does it, oh-high-and-mighty sorcerer?"

Shang's fists clench. "No matter! We end our round."

"And as Scorpion and Sindel are both unopposed, they shall advance to the next stage of the tournament," Liu announces. "And our first match shall be..."

"...Scorpion and you, my pathetic sorcerer." As the spectre is already in the ring, he raises his arms and encases them in flames.

Shang straightens and smirks. "Very well. I shall---" Suddenly, he clutches at his side in pain, his face twisting in a grimace. "Oh, the pain! The horrible pain!"

Fox and the others on his side look at him in bewilderment as Shang gets onto one knee. "What are you doing now?" Liu says in a tone of half-disbelief and half-boredom.

"An old wound... acting up!" Shang looks over at his would-be allies. "One of you must go in my place..."

"Are you serious?" Jin scoffs. "Let me see this wound---"

"Away with your hands!" Shang swats at Jin as he approaches. "I must cast a spell to heal myself. One of you, face Scorpion now, or else we forfeit the round!"

"And whose fault would that be, huh?" Jin says with his hands on his hips.

"Pathetic..." Liu Kang yawns from nearby. "If one of you doesn't step into the ring in ten seconds..."

Jin looks at Fox; they both know that, aside from Shang, they are the only ones remaining on their side. If not the sorcerer, it must be one of them. The Shirai Ryu looks past his Shaolin teammate and meets the burning gaze of Scorpion. The undead perversion of his master simply stares back at him, wreathed in hellfire, daring him to step forward.

"I'll do it," Fox says, putting a hand on Jin's shoulder and moving past him. "It's only right."

"I grow weary of you, pretender," Scorpion says as Fox enters the ring. "But at least now I have you where I want you. There will be no running this time, and make no mistake: when this is over, I will finish you."

Fox drops the weighted end of his kusarigama to the floor and stares the spectre down, unflinching and unafraid. "I know you are in there, Master Hasashi. I know that you are a slave to no one other than your burning rage, but it doesn't have to be this way. Look at me. I am your student from another world, one where you overcame your anger and left the demon of vengeance behind. I am living proof that you can do this."

"SILENCE!" Scorpion shouts, eyes flaring beneath his black hood. "You are nothing but a fake. Your words ring hollow. Hanzo Hasashi is dead, and only I remain!" He takes out his own chain, the kunai at the end wickedly shaped like a devlish spearhead. "A burning fate that you too shall soon learn!"

"Very well," Fox mutters, beginning to swing his weapon above his head. "Then let's see who the master truly is."

Liu Kang raises his hand, then drops it. "FIGHT!"

Fox wastes no time in hurling his weight at Scorpion, but the yellow-clad ninja sees the attack coming. Bringing up his leg and then snapping it downwards, he steps upon the chain. This leaves Fox open to his own chain-based attack as he hurls the barb towards him, embedding it into his left flank. With a resounding cry of, "GET OVER HERE!" the spectre yanks across the ring before delivering a powerful kick to his jaw.

Sent flying to the ground, Fox recovers quickly before Scorpion can attack him with one of his swords. As the spectre stabs into the stone where he was, the younger Shirai Ryu gets up to his feet and flips backwards, dodging a fireball thrown from Scorpion's free hand. Whilst flipping, he pulls on his chain, freeing it from Scorpion's foot.

Landing on his feet with a bloody lip, Fox prepares to return the favor.

>>2131337

Scorpion withdraws his blade from the stone floor and vanishes in a spout of flame. Fox knows this attack, and anticipates the direction it will come from: behind. He turns and swings the steel ball, connecting it solidly with the side of the spectre's head. His master's attack fails and he falls to the side, dazed from the strike.

"I've seen that technique too many times for it to work on me," Fox says as Scorpion gets up onto a knee. "You trained me to face off against an opponent who can teleport, starting with yourself."

"I said silence!" Drawing both swords, the ninja dashes forwards, leaving a fiery trail behind.

'Master Hasashi does his best work up close... I can't let him close that distance!'

Fox swings his chain in front of him in a long arc, causing Scorpion to skid to a stop to avoid the attack. Maintaining the momentum of his weapon, the younger warrior continues to whirl it over his head, turning and twisting his arm to dissuade any avenue of attack. Scorpion darts in and out, growling beneathi his mask as he is continually denied a path to his prey.

Utilizing his double-jointed elbow, Fox tirelessly uses his well-practiced technique to keep Hanzo at bay, just as he had done in countless sparring matches with his master in his youth. Master Hasashi himself had overseen every level of Fox's training, until he could use the kusarigama in his sleep. That very same man, or rather a dark copy of him, now beholds this dedication to his craft as he finds himself unable to get close to Fox without risking a potentially crippling blow.

>>2131444

But Scorpion is never without the means to damage a foe. Bringing up one of his swords, he blocks the weighted end of the chain. It wraps around the blade, allowing Fox to pull it away and disarm him---but he had counted on that. With both hands, Scorpion turns his palms to the thunderous red sky and raises them high, conjuring a pillar of flames at Fox's feet.

Finding himself suddenly forced to dodge the fire, Scorpion charges in and draws his second sword, slicing Fox across the arm. Another cut down his back and a final one on his thigh send the younger warrior spinning to the floor as the spectre stands over him, ready to impale him with a killing blow!

As Scorpion brings down the sword, Fox reaches for a smokebomb and sets it off right over his chest. The spectre blinks as the sword makes contact, buried in the stone where the younger ninja was just lying.

"What?!" is all he has time to say before Fox leaps upon his back, hooking the sickle around his foe's throat and yanking back. The blade cuts into Scorpion's neck as he stumbles backwards, with Fox using his own weight to pull back on the older ninja.

"Just let it happen, just let it happen, just let it happen!" Fox mutters throat gritted teeth as boiling-hot blood pours from the wound. Scorpion's arms flail as Fox attempts to wrap the remainder of his chain around one of them.

They fall upon the ground, struggling against each other as Scorpion tries to pull away.

>>2131587

Fox's arms tighten as he pulls harder on the sickle, prepared to take off Scorpion's head if need be. Scorpion attempts to slam his elbow into Fox's ribs, but the motion only succeeds in the cut growing deeper.

Suddenly, fire bursts forth from Scorpion's neck and mouth, causing Fox to retract his hand lest it be burnt to the bone. And as Fox rolls away, that's exactly what happens to the spectre's head. As fire covers his head, the hood and mask burn and melt away to reveal the white bone of his skull, encased entirely in flame; his neck and all other trases of false flesh are gone. Scorpion rises and looks over his shoulder at Fox with empty yet burning eye sockets.

He then turns and opens his mouth, unleashing a spray of flame in his direction!

His first thought is to quench those fires with a cement bomb; he takes one out and and lobs it at Hanzo, who promptly teleports away from it and across the arena. Once there, he throws his spear once more at Fox, who also dodges, but suffers a glancing cut from it across his chest.

'Damn,' he says as his shirt grows red. 'It's not deep... It's not deep...'

Putting aside the stinging pain, he stares down Scorpion as the spectre charges forward, his burning skull leaving a trail of light like a torch swung too quickly.

>>2131818

As the master nears the apprentice, Fox pulls out another one of Scorpion's moves and catches the bottom of his fiery jaw with a backflip kick. Though lacking the fiery momentum that Hanzo would employ in this attack, boht of Forrest's feet connect solidly and dislodge the jaw from his foe. As his hands touch the ground and his feet come down behind him, Fox looks up to see the bone and teeth hanging from one cheek-joint on the right side of Scorpion's face.

The yellow ninja reaches up slowly, grabs it, and sets it back into place, then rotates it slightly with an audible cracking noise. Fox had expected immediate reprisal, but instead Scorpion merely glares at him for a moment before asking, "Who are you?" in a soft tone.

Fox hesitates, but gives his honest answer. "I am your student, though you do not know me. But I know you, Hanzo."

From nearby, Liu Kang stares upon the match with growing disinterest. "Scorpion! Continue!"

Ignoring the man's request, Scorpion steps forward and continues to remain straight as he looks down at Fox. "Do not lie to me any further."

"I have spoken not a single lie to you," Fox insists. "I swear it upon all the honor of the Shirai Ryu." He knows it is a gamble mentioning his lost clan to this warrior, but Scorpion does not attack.

Undaunted, he presses on. "The Shirai Ryu could rise again, Hanzo. Where I come from, the Shirai Ryu are one of the pillars of Earthrealm's protection, and all know Hanzo Hasashi as one of the most honored champions of the realm. I count myself among the honored few who have trained beneath the legendary Grandmaster of the Shirai Ryu."

"This cannot be..." The flames upon his skull seem to die down slightly.

Fox smiles beneath his mask. "Think, Hanzo. What would Kana and Jubei wish?'

However, what Fox thought would be the final blow instead causes the spectre to pause. "Who?"

"Your wife and child," Fox says, slightly confused. "Kana... and Jubei."

In but a moment, the flames return to Scorpion, burning twice as brightly. His hand lunges for Fox's throat, wrapping around it and hoisting him upwards. "My wife and child... Their names were Harumi and Satoshi! You lie... everything you have said is a lie! You know nothing about me!"

Fox's mind reels at how suddenly this situation changed for the poorer as he realizes that applying his knowledge of his master compared to this universe's Scorpion is a double-edged sword... but the names of his wife and child being different? How would he have possibly known that? His secret weapon had turned into a self-destruct.

"To think I almost believed you, silver-tongued deceiver... Now, your pain shall be eternal!"

As Scorpion's flaming fist is about to punch through Fox's chest, a crack of thunder is heard and a bolt of red lightning surges down from the sky, separating them. Both Fox and Scorpion fall back as the arena fractures slightly. As the young warrior gasps for air, he looks up and sees a dark figure, clad in a crimson cape and a wide-brimmed hat. His skin is pale, his eyes glow red, and his very visage seems sinister, but Fox knows this man is none other than the Protector of Earthrealm, Raiden.

"Cease!" he commands with a booming voice. He ignores Scorpion and Fox and stares up at Liu Kang. "I forbid this abomination of a tournament to continue."

"And now the party is complete," Liu says with a smile. "Welcome, Blunder God. What mistake led you here today?"

"The mistake of thinking you could host a tournament with Earthrealm fighters without my express consent, 'Emperor.' Release the terms before the Elder Gods or suffer the consequences."

"I think not," Liu replies. "Shang Tsung set the terms, and I agreed. I'll not back down now. This is the most interesting thing that has happened around here for quite some time and I intend to see it through."

Raiden looks to his left and glares at the sorcerer, red electricity crackling around his eyes. "I should have known you would be involved, you feeble-minded snake of a spellcaster."

"Lord Raiden, such a... pleasure," Shang sneers.

"He's right," Fox says, standing up. "This whole tournament is a farce. Don't you understand that greater things are in motion? All of you are in danger!"

Raiden turns to consider Fox, then raises his hand towards him. Bolts of red lightning surge outward and blast him, causing his body to crumble back to the floor and him to let out a cry of pain.

"Fox!" Ling shouts, running to his aid as the barrage ends. Jin quickly gets between Fox and Raiden, holding his bow up as Ling turns him over, inspecting him for damage.

"Have you completely lost your mind?!" Jin accuses the god.

"Watch your tone. You fall under my jurisdiction, Kung Jin. That fool there knows not what he is doing. He must be brought before the Elder Gods and sent back where he came from."

Liu Kang rises. "You will not raise a hand against my tournament fighters again, but I am hardly surprised at your callousness, Raiden. At least when you killed me, you sought my forgiveness, albeit only due to your misguided folly. I would say that I am glad you have abandonned all pretense of benevolence, if your very presence did not sicken me so."

Shang Tsung strides into the arena alongside Liu Kang and Raiden. "Oh, yes, prattle on as if you had a high horse to ride upon. You both are sad, pathetic excuses of what you once were. I'll not cower to your demands, Raiden. The tournament will go on. You, Liu Kang, will demand to expel this miserable god from your realm, as is your right."

Liu puts a finger on Shang's chest. "You will not lecture me on my rights as ruler of the Netherrealm, nor presume to give me orders! Of the three of us, you are the most wretched by far, but only by a slim margin."

"I am the only one among us who at least has stayed true to his principles," Shang retorts. "Both of you are shadows of your former selves."

Raiden folds his arms. "I suppose we are expected to merely forget your treachery to Earthrealm in joining Outworld all those centuries ago? Or the countless underhanded deals you have made since?"

Liu Kang shakes his head disapprovingly. "Says the one who wears the Amulet of Shinnok like a badge of honor."

As the three of them go on, Fox, Jin and Ling all stare at their argument. "I've never seen such powerful beings act so petty," she muses as she holds Fox's head in her lap.

"I'm alright," Fox insists. He is about to get up when an idea rings in his head. "Ling, Jin... I'm going to slip away. Make sure I am unnoticed."

"What are you doing?" Jin asks in a hushed tone.

"Just trust me," Fox insists. "Keep their attention off of me."

Jin smiles, gives him a thumbs-up, turns around and walks up to them. "Alright, we get it! All three of you are assholes! Are you the most powerful fighters in the realms, or children arguing over a toy? Get over yourselves!"

"How dare you," Liu Kang spits. "I'll not have my honor questioned by a fake Shaolin."

"You have no honor," Raiden says. "You forsook it the day you allied with Quan Chi and Shinnok of your own free will."

"I've more honor than the both of you combined," Shang Tsung says, and immediately they are back into it again. Knowing full well that every person, revenant or not, will be watching the argument, Fox slowly slips towards a nearby stairwell and vanishes below.

Looking down at the ground, Fox's suspicions are confirmed: judging by the trail of blood, Meat went this way. 'At least he's easy to follow,' he thinks. The trail of blood leads him down a few hallways and another two sets of stairs, eventually leading him back to a familiar sight. The museum doors are still destroyed from Jax's assault earlier, allowing Fox to slip within, whereupon he discovers the skinless man picking up the talking skull he had encountered earlier.

"My friend! It's so good to see you!" Meat says.

"Aw, you too, buddy. It's been so long."

"Meat," he calls out to the pair, getting his attention. "What's going on? Why did you abandon us at the tournament?"

"I was going to come back. I just thought it important to get my friend while I was here." He holds up the skull. "This is---"

"Yes, I've met him. We've got trouble upstairs. Raiden just showed up and---"

"We need to get to his body," Meat explains. "Someone else is after it."

"What? Who? Why does it matter?"

The talking skull pipes up. "It matters because that bastard has been waiting for everyone else to be distracted, steal my body and make off with the Kamidogu! And then he'll laugh all the while and act like this was 'all part of his plan' or something. Guy won't shut up about it. How the hell does a 'cleric of chaos' make intricate plans that revolve around extremely complicated series of circumstances lining up in JUUUST the perfect way and NOT be a total hypocrite?"

"Wait... You're talking about Havik?"

"Yeah, that's the one. He talks more than chalk-skin. On and on and on, chaos-this, chaos-that, blah, blah, blah..."

Fox steps forward, getting in the skull's face. "So where is your body?"

"Woah, take it easy. I told you before, I don't know. Only Shinnok does."

"And apparently, Havik too," Meat laments.

"But last I saw, both Havik and Shinnok were upstairs in the arena with Liu Kang. So how could the head have slipped away?"

"I don't know. Does he have any friends?"

Fox pauses for a moment in thought. "Where I come from, Havik and Noob Saibot once had an alliance... perhaps the same could be said in this reality. With Liu Kang, Shang Tsung and Raiden at each other's throats, it would be easy for the wraith to slip in and steal Havik, taking him to your body..."

"And once he's on my body, he can get the Kamidogu back! He must have a way. We need to stop him!"

>Let's kidnap the head of Shinnok and force him to take us to the skull's body.

Fox folds his arms and thinks, then nods. "Shinnok said he knows where your body is, so he's our only lead. I'll go back up and find a way to steal his head away from him."

A new voice rings out from the museum doors. "And just why should I allow you to do that?"

The three of them turn to behold Scorpion's approach. His head is still merely a skull, though now without flames accompanying it. From Meat's hands the talking skull immediately adds, "No relation guys, I swear."

Fox ignores the comment and faces Scorpion fully. "I take it you noticed my absence."

"We were in the midst of a battle to the death. I do not take interruptions lightly, nor cowards running away from me."

His brow furrows in frustration. "I have a hard time believing that the Hanzo Hasashi I know was ever this short-sighted. There are things going on so much larger than you and I, the very fabric of both of our universes is threatening to be torn apart, and all you care about is finishing a deathmatch?"

Scorpion stops walking and stares silently at Fox for several moments, the hollow recesses of his eyes betraying no hint of emotion. Fox's body remains tense, ready for any sudden attack from the ninja, but none comes.

"You seemed so sure when you said those names," he finally speaks. "But they are not my wife and child."

"So there are some differences between you and the Hanzo from my world. I haven't lied to you. You can either accept my word at last or we can fight to the death and then it won't matter anymore."

Fully expecting him to take the latter option, Fox is surprised when Scorpion asks, "What is he like?"

"You believe me then?"

"No. I want to know what he is like."

"He's strict. Patient. An unrelenting teacher who has no time to coddle you. He trained me, and others, in some of the harshest conditions. You've seen me use some of your own techniques against you, so you must know that only you---or another version of you---could have taught them to me."

"That is the only reason I am listening to you right now."

"Then listen to this: there are countless worlds out there. Other realities, other universes where things ended up very differently from this one. Liu Kang isn't the Emperor of the Netherrealm. You and Sub-Zero made peace after rebuilding your clans and help defend Earthrealm, and I am your student."

"Are you my best student?"

Fox hesitates. "No... His name is Takeda, son of Kenshi."

Scorpion's head tilts slightly. "The blind samurai... I know him."

"In fact, where I come from, you helped raise his son while he was away. He and I grew up together under your tutelage. I pride myself on my abilities, but Takeda..." Fox smirks as he thinks about his friend. "If he applied himself more, he'd be so much more than I am. I've never been more honored by anything in my life than to be able to call him my friend, except for the fact that I can call you my master."
>>
>>2136135

Fox goes silent as he and Scorpion stand very still. The room itself goes quiet, with the only noise being the occasional drip of blood from Meat's flesh onto the floor. The master and the apprentice, separated by the boundaries of parallel dimensions, both finally seem to relax as their stances grow less guarded and more open.

"I have none of what you speak," Scorpion says quietly. "But I would like to have it."

"Then help me, help us," Fox implores him. "Our realities must be separate once more, and when this is done, you can go on and leave this horrid realm. Return to your home. Your true home."

He does not say yes, but it is not needed. "Shinnok's head is kept near Liu Kang's throne. We will need to be quick and precise if we hope to avoid being noticed."

Fox smiles. "I think I have an idea."

>We'll smoke bomb the entire area, get in and get out.

He turns back to Meat. "Scorpion and I are going to try to provoke Raiden, Shang Tsung and Liu Kang into actually fighting each other. My thinking is that it will be enough of a distraction for all involved to grab Shinnok's head."

"It will not be difficult to do so," Scorpion nods. "They would exchange blows as readily as words."

"Exactly. All we need to do is tip them over the edge with something. But what?"

"Simple," Scorpion replies. "We lie. I have a plan of my own now, but you will need to play along."

Fox nods. "Alright... master."

"You two," Scorpion points at Meat and the skull. "You will also have roles to play. I shall explain on the way."

Not long afterwards, the four of them proceed up to the top of the tower, where they discover to no surprise that the three of them are still arguing. Scorpion marches past Jin and Ling, hauling Fox and Meat by the necks, whereupon he throws them down onto the floor. Liu Kang, Raiden and Shang Tsung all turn to behold this.

"These two snuck away, and were stealing from the vaults!" he declares.

"Blame me not!" Meat cries. "Shang Tsung, my master and creator, bid me do this!"

Shang's eyes narrow. "What?!"

Liu Kang looks at the sorcerer. "So, you come on the pretense of a tournament, but then send your lackeys to plunder my relics?"

"This is a lie! That thing is not one of mine."

"Oh, master, how could you forsake me so?!" Meat shouts. "You birthed me in your flesh pits, but now you would deny me?"

"I can sense your magic within this husk," Raiden sneers. "You are a poor liar, Shang Tsung."

Scorpion then kicks Fox in the back, enough to force him back onto his knees. "And this one is in league with the Thunder God!"

Now it is Raiden's turn to be shocked. "You dare accuse me of---"

"He only appeared in our match to save his life!" Scorpion cuts him off. "Those bolts of lightning were but a show to throw you off his trail, Emperor!"

Liu Kang's eyes narrow. "Such poor guests, each more underhanded and filthy than the last."

Raiden looks at the former Shaolin. "This is rediculous."

Shang Tsung spits on the ground. "I can hardly believe I stand here with such fools. You, Raiden, are so blind that you cannot see the strings being pulled around you, and you, Liu Kang, are so pathetic that your very servants now turn on you."

"You would speak to me of servants turning upon their masters, when you send your own minions into my vaults? I have had enough of your tongue! I'll rip it out of your throat!"
>>
>>2136384

Liu Kang throws the first punch, right into Shang Tsung's face. Without missing a beat, he uses the same arm to slam Raiden in the neck before kicking him away. The sorcerer falls back with a bloody lip before conjuring a fiery skull that he launches from his palms at the Emperor, who leaps away. It instead blasts Raiden, who brings up his arms to absorb most of the attack. When he lowers them, his red eyes crackle with furious lightning. The three charge at each other as Fox, Meat and Scorpion slip away.

"What have you done?" Ling asks as Fox stands back up.

"Just helped them along," he says with a smirk. He looks up into the sky, seeing the two Kamidogu hovering several meters over the arena, then looks to Liu Kang's throne. Shinnok's head is there, mounted upon a small spike so that he may watch.

As the punches, kicks and bursts of fire and lightning grow fiercer by the second, Fox looks over at Jin and Ling. He leans lcose and whispers, "Scorpion's on our side now. We need to get the head of Shinnok."

Jin seems fairly apprehensive of working with the spectre, but Ling nods readily. "What do we need to do?"

"If need be, distract the other revenants. I'll make for the head."

With the plan underway, Fox slips over to the side of the arena and drops down while the others remain up on top. The spire's exterior is a mess of spikes, smaller platforms and edges, giving him plenty of space on which to shimmy. He hugs the wall until he reaches the corner, then carefully steps around it before continuing onwards. Overhead the red skies roil as though reacting to the clash of the three powerful figures in the arena, and stray bolts of lightning and fireballs occasionally fly off into the crimson void.

Finally, Fox is underneath Liu Kang's throne. Taking out his kusarigama, he carefully aims and throws the sickle up to the back of the obsidian chair, hooking it onto one of its spikes. Hand over hand, he pulls himself up the side of the tower until he is able to climb onto the back of the throne. He peers over it to find the revenants all fully engaged in watching the battle unfold before their eyes.

With a smirk, Fox reaches out, plucks Shinnok's head off of the armrest and tucks him close before dropping back down. The fallen Elder God says something that is muffled by his arm, but he pays no mind.

As he hangs off the side of the tower, a fiery burst from nearby reveals Scorpion, who leaps onto the side as well. He looks at Fox and nods towards the long drop. Understanding his intent, Fox lets go at the same time as his master, and the two of them begin to fall.

Scorpion grabs his arm and teleports, dragging them both through a vortex of fire and onto solid ground below on the plains of the Netherrealm. Fox stands up and dusts himself off, then holds up the head of Shinnok. "Well? Where's the skull's body?"

Shinnok's eyes seem to roll into place and his slacked jaw straigthens. "A cave, not far from here," he explains. He points with his eyes and says, "Head in that direction."

Together, Fox and Scorpion set off, following their bodyless guide. The journey is mostly silent, save for Shinnok occasionally instructing them on what path to take. At the base of a large burning mountain they come upon the mouth of a cave and proceed cautiously inside.

Deep within its twisting passage, they begin to hear chanting, and spy a strange glow up ahead. Crouching low, they sneak closer and discover a large chamber filled with orange light. Havik is here, his head placed upon a skeletal body that is animated by his will, perfoming some kind of ritual. Off to the side lurks Noob Saibot, who stands outside of a circle of glowing runes with his arms folded.

"How much longer does this take?" Noob asks.

"I am not summoning one Kamidogu, but two!" Havik reminds him. "These things take time."

"Just remember that I get the Netherrealm Kamidogu for myself."

"Yes, yes, then you shall overthrow Liu Kang, I'm well aware."

Scopion leans in close. "What are we doing? We should attack."

"He said they're summoning the Kamidogu... I need the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm. I must ensure that Havik doesn't get ahold of it."

"And Noob Saibot must not take control of the Netherrealm," Scorpion replies. "You intend to let them complete their ritual?"

"We jump in as soon as it's done, and we make sure they don't make off with them."

"Very well."

Nearby, Havik howls in delight as he chants a litany of incoherant babblings while the runes glow brighter. He then speaks normally, obstensively to Noob Saibot, but mostly to himself. "The chaos of those fools battling has only sped up my design! Raiden, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, each barely aware of the discord they sow! What delicious discord it is!"

From their hidden position, they look on as a blinding light begins to fill the chamber, causing them both to shield their eyes. The chaotic cleric's laughter as the light decreases draws their eyes as they all now gaze upon the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm and Netherrealm, slowly encircling each other.

"Now!" Fox says, dashing in alongside Scorpion.

Scorpion raises his arms and causes several pillars of flame to emerge as Fox dashes towards the Kamidogu. Havik, forced backwards by the flames, lets out a surprised cry while Noob Saibot melds into the wall, leaving only an oily black stain behind. Fox skids to a stop at the center of the glowing rune, grabs both Kamidogu, and immediately turns around to run back towards Scorpion.

The floor at his feet suddenly becomes black as Noob Saibot reaches through the ground to grab at his ankles. Fox stumbles and trips, falling forward, with both relics falling from his hands. "Get them back!" Havik shouts, leaping towards them both.

Scorpion rises from cover and throws a fireball at Havik, knocking him backwards. He looks down and sees Fox being pulled into the black portal and both Kamidogu lying nearby. Acting as quickly as he can, he throws his spear at the younger warrior, not with the intent to impale but to give him something to grab onto as he goes for the nearest artifact, the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm.

Noob Saibot lets go, allowing Fox to pull himself out of the ground, though now his lower half is covered in thick, tar-like goo. Noob's reason for releasing him is made clear as another black puddle opens beneath the Netherrealm Kamidogu, which he reaches up through to grab. He yanks the item back into the void, both vanishing from sight as he retreats.

Fox gasps as Scorpion helps him up. He looks at the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm in Scorpion's hands. "Noob made off with the other one," he laments.

"There will be another time," Scorpion replies.

"Give it back! Give it back! Chaos must reign!" Havik cries, leaping up to his feet. He runs towards Fox, who turns and delivers a high kick---knocking the fleshy head right off of the skeleton's shoulders. Havik lands nearby as the body crumbles to the floor, babbling non-stop.

"I really do hate this guy," Fox mutters, walking up to the head.

"You are nothing! Insignificant! A speck within a speck! Your reality, all realities, are doomed to chaos!" Havik screams.

Winding his leg back, Fox delivers a solid kick to Havik, sending him flying off not unlike a football. The cleric bounces off the wall and into a crevace off to the side, where he tumbles into darkness; only his screams of madness echoing off the walls can be heard, but are eventually silenced.

"I think it is time we left," he declares, and walks towards his master.

"Here," the spectre says, handing him the relic. "I've no use for this trinket."

"You don't know how much I appreciate your help, Hanzo."

"Hanzo... Perhaps, after all I have seen and heard this day, I will reach a point where I am once more comfortable going by that name."

"One day, you will. I know it."

Nearby, a voice speaks from the floor. "I have brought you to Havik and the Kamidogu you sought! Now grant me that skeletal body!"

Fox lets out a heavy sigh and looks over at the head of Shinnok. "No deal."

"Cur! I will not forget this," Shinnok mutters, his eyes full of hate.

"Good, because I couldn't care less." Fox carefully wraps the Kamidogu within his sash and kneels down next to the skeletal body, hoisting it up. "I think its true owner deserves it more."

Amidst a stream of archaic profanity, Scorpion walks up to the head, takes out his sword and stabs it into the forehead, silencing Shinnok. He holds the head up on the end of his blade.

"Is he dead?" Fox asks, looking on as the former elder god's tongue hangs out of his mouth.

"No, unfortunately. But the blade in his brain did end his babble."

"Worth it, as far as I'm concerned."

Outside the cave, their mirth is cut short as they take in the sight of several figures approaching. To Fox's dismay, they come in three groups: Raiden, Jin, Ling, Lao, Meat and the skull, Shang Tsung by himself, and Liu Kang accompanied by all of his revenants.

"Well, well, well," Liu Kang says, stepping out of a fiery portal with his minions at his back. "When the Kamidogu vanished, we each traced them here, but I didn't expect to find you here Scorpion."

"I no longer serve you, Liu Kang. I forsake any oath I made to you."

"A lot of that going around these days," Liu says with a smirk, looking over at Kung Lao. Raiden then steps forward.

"I should have known. All of this was an elaborate ruse to steal both Kamidogu by that reality-hopping anomoly."

Fox shakes his head and drops the skeletal body to the floor. "It was, but Havik is dealt with now."
>>
>>2138262

"I was referring to you, fiend! You will not leave here with the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm!"

"Hey, is that my body?!" the skull shouts.

Jin, Ling and Lao look on with uncertainty, but then Shang Tsung speaks. "That's right. I placed that Kamidogu in the tournament, and as it had no end, it belongs to me!"

Liu Kang threateningly clenches his fist. "I do not sense the Netherrealm Kamidogu here... And if it has been taken, then I claim Chaosrealm's instead!"

"Hey, can I get my body back please?"

"Neither of you shall take it!" Raiden declares. "It is to be returned to the Elder Gods, along with that one," he points at Fox, "for proper imprisonment."

Scorpion takes the head of Shinnok and throws it at their feet. "Try it, thunder god."

"After putting my head back on my body!"

The three Kungs all begin to voice their disapproval of Raiden's decree. Shang Tsung, fed up with both of his counterparts, begins striding towards Fox, intent on retrieving what he believes is his. Liu Kang, equally out of patience, then commands all of his revenants to attack!

"This is going to get even uglier than before," Fox says. "We need to get out of here!"

Scorpion nods in agreement and quickly raises his hands, creating a fiery portal. "I will hold it!" he declares. "Go!"

Fox looks over at his allies. "Come on!" He waves them over, and they quickly do so. As Jin, Ling and Lao make a break for the portal, Meat breaks off, carrying his skull-headed friend towards his body, pausing only briefly to also pick up the head of Shinnok. The Kung family leaps into the portal, and Fox is not far behind, staying back to make sure Meat makes it in.

As he himself is about to jump, he suddenly feels a hand on his shoulder. He turns to behold Shang Tsung, and a fist flying into his face. The sorcerer knocks him down then runs into the portal before Scorpion, who is too busy holding it open, can stop him. As Raiden brings down a torrent of lightning down upon the ashen plains and Liu's revenants, Fox grunts and gets up to his feet before running in himself.

Scorpion dives into his portal, which seals behind him.

The other side of the fiery tunnel is dark, very dark indeed. It is only when Scorpion arrives and raises his hands do flames emerge on all sides of the room, revealing a chamber somewhere underground, a crypt-like layer of the Netherrealm where there is no lava, only an endless cavern-like expanse filled with large obsidian pillars. "Where are we?" Fox asks.

"This is my lair," Scorpion replies. "We should be safe here; it is deep in the Netherream and a place we will not be tracked to. This means there is no help coming for you, sorcerer..."

Shang Tsung is held at spear point by Ling along with an arrow pointed at his head. Jin sneers and adds in, "Give us one reason right now not to put you down, Shang."

Before he can speak, there is a cry of jubilation from nearby. All eyes are drawn to the skull, whom Meat has just reunited with its body. Springing to animated life just as when Havik was piloting it, the skull lets out another cry. "At last! At last, oh, home sweet home! They say home is where you hang your hat, but I say home is where you rest your head!" His skeletal fingers roam all about his smooth cranium, as if he can feel and taste once more. "Oh, I missed you so much, boy!"

Jin pauses for but a moment more, then looks back down at Shang. "Now, I believe I was about to shoot you..."

"Wait!" Shang says, holding up both hands. "I can give you something valuable!"

"Valuable enough to excuse that punch you just gave me?" Fox asks, folding his arms.

"Doubly so. I possess the souls of your friends."

"Who is he talking about?" Ling asks, raising her brow.
>>
>>2143167

Fox knows. "Fireseed and Nightwolf."

"You stole them when nobody was looking, didn't you?" Jin shakes his head. "I should have known..." He is about to loosen his arrow when Kung Lao stops him, purposefully lowering his bow away from the sorcerer. "Lao?"

"Let him speak."

"Thank you... I will grant you both of their souls, in exchange for leaving me be. I shall go on my way."

"You think you can just walk away after all you pulled?" Ling says with a scowl. "None of us asked to be pulled into your little tournament scheme."

"A plan which did not go as I had foreseen," Shang admits. "And now I am without my most potent bargaining chip: the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm." He shoots a particularly nasty look at Fox, who says nothing to him. "We all would have benefited greatly if you had just played along."

"I don't play by a sorcerer's rules," Fox mutters. "I've seen what can happen."

"My offer still stands," Shang gets back to the point. "I will grant you the souls of your friends for my freedom."

"Is it worth it?" Jin asks.

Lao nods. "Nightwolf is an important figure for Earthrealm. If we can bring him back to life, he can help guide many back to the path of light... possibly even myself."

"And Fireseed is important, too," Fox says, drawing all of their eyes to him. "He may not seem it, but I promise you that he can be one of your greatest assets. Provided his soul is free from corruption..."

"I took his soul, not that filth that was clinging onto it," Shang is quick to assure him. "That darkness ran away when its two potential vessels were killed."

Scorpion steps forward. "And what of me, sorcerer? Your offer is good for them, but what is to stop me from simply killing you for my own personal distaste? I remember well the times I served as your pawn at Quan Chi's behest. You knew the truth of my torment, but did nothing."

"I... will make it up to you," he offers.

"Not good enough."

"I will serve you, then," he says, though it physically pains him to say it. "I shall help you find what you seek..."
>>
>>2143170

"That's not good enough either. It doesn't matter what I seek, because I will find it on my own. If you truly wish to avoid my wrath, you swear right now upon pain of death, and I promise you that I will deliver it should you break your oath, to serve the interests of Earthrealm."

He nearly spits out, "What? And be a lackey of that fool Raiden?"

Jin shakes his head. "Raiden no longer has Earthrealm's best interests at heart. He wants a war with Outworld and is more than willing to drag all of us into the conflict---kind of like what you did with your little tournament fiasco. If you want to make that up to us too, you'll do what Scorpion says."

Shang meets the gazes of all around him and lets out a long sigh. "Very well, I swear it."

Scorpion's eyes narrow. "Then release the souls, sorcerer."

With great reluctance, Shang lifts his hands, which begin to glow green. Two orbs emerge, which leave his body and float towards the center of the group. There, they begin to shift and change, growing larger until they are man-sized, before forming into the spectral forms of Nightwolf and Fireseed. The mercenary looks at his green, translucent hands with a grim expression, but the shaman seems at peace.

"Nightwolf," Lao says, walking forward. "Can you hear me, old friend?"

"I can indeed," he replies, though his voice has a faint echo-like quality. "I have been released from my prison of flesh and joined the realm of the spirits."

Lao lowers his head and takes off his hat. "I know nothing would bring you greater joy than to join the spirits of your people. It would be selfish of me to ask for your help, but---"

"Be still," Nightwolf says, placing his ghostly hand upon the monk's shoulder. "I am not ready to join my ancestors. I have much to atone for. I shall remain amongst the living for now and do as I have always done: be a guide to those who are lost. Like you.”

“Thank you,” he says with a smile.

Fox walks forward, looking at Fireseed. “Joshua?” The ghost regards him with a neutral expression, but then he fades away. “Wait, where are you going? Come back!”

Nightwolf turns. “Worry not. He is not gone… Not yet. I shall guide him.” He looks back at Lao. “I will find you soon, my friend. I must attend to Fireseed.”

“I understand. I shall see you soon.” As Nightwolf fades away, Lao places his hat back upon his head, then rejoins Jin and Ling to converse happily with them. Fox steps back and then turns around, only to behold Meat and his skeletal companion attempting to put Shinnok’s head upon his shoulders, as if to share the body with him, albeit with mixed results. It seems that the fallen Elder God’s earlier stab wound to the brain has healed, but he is unable to control any aspect of the skeleton upon which he now sits, sharing shoulder space with the skull.

“Release me!” he demands. “I shall not be treated as an accessory! I am Shinnok, the greatest of all beings! YOU WILL ALL PAY FOR THIS!"
>>
>>2143175

As Meat attempts to get them both to calm down, Fox feels another hand on his shoulder, though this time it is not followed by a punch to the face. Scorpion stands over him, looking down with softer eyes---or rather, as soft a look as can be achieved with no face and burning eye sockets.

“I shall not forget what you have done for me. You have given me a new purpose, perhaps a new life.”

Fox smiles and puts his hand on the specter’s. “Once, you did exactly the same for me.”

“This is where we part, then?”

“I’m afraid so. Goodbye, Hanzo.”

“I wish you luck upon your journey, Forrest Fox. Farewell.”

Scorpion leaves his side to attend to Shang Tsung. As the chujin takes out his personal portal generator and prepares to use the final charge, he hears another figure approaching him. He turns to behold Ling, who has a somewhat sheepish look on her face.

“I must admit that I am somewhat… unaccustomed to the level of gratitude I owe you,” she says. “For me, my father, for everything.”

“You’re my teammate, no matter what reality we find ourselves in.”

“I don’t suppose I’ll ever see you again?”

“Perhaps I still exist somewhere in your Earthrealm… Who knows?”

She smiles. “I hope so.” She takes a step closer to pull down his grey mask, and leans in close to give him a kiss upon the cheek. She pulls back with a light blush on her cheeks and says, “This other version of me… Look after her, will you? Sometimes I know not what I do.”

He smiles at her. “I will.”

He activates the portal device, creating a purple vortex in front of him. The last charge spent, the device powers down. With one final look and a wave to his allies, he steps through the portal and back to the Nexus.

Upon the other side, he discovers a most unnerving thing: the absence of Raiden. He looks to the altar, fearing that the Kamidogu may be gone as well, but to his relief there still float three exact duplicates of Chaosrealm’s artifact. All around the circular stone platform, the skies of the Nexus seem in disarray, as though swirling at a much faster pace. A breeze can be felt, and the light of the area seems much more dim than usual.

“Raiden!” Fox calls out, but there is no response. A worrying chill grows up his spine. “Raiden! Where are you?”

With no response and no recourse left, he approaches the altar to place the fourth Kamidogu upon it. Overhead a crack of lighting can be heard, leaping from one cloud to another, and Fox whips around to search for the thunder god---but again, he is nowhere to be seen.

Fox finds himself in a great deal of doubt. ‘If Raiden is not here, are the Kamidogu not safe? Where could he have gone? Did someone chase him off? If so, then why are the others still here?’ As the strong winds push the clouds of the Nexus in a swirling pattern high overhead, making him feel as though he is in the eye of the storm, the ninja attempts to steady himself and collect his thoughts. ‘Raiden should be here… but he isn’t. No matter what, I have to continue my mission. I must see it through.’

As he approaches the portal to Edenia, he hastens his step, for he feels that he is inexorably running out of time…

Hey folks. Thanks for playing, and I hope you enjoyed this trip into the Netherrealm. Sorry for taking so long; these days I'm really busy.

The quest is going to have to go on hiatus until about February, unfortunately. Until then I'll keep you posted on Discord and other means.

Once more I appreciate you sticking with me to the end. With four out of six Kamidogu down, and Edenia next up (since we want to save Chaosrealm for last) I'll see you next time!
