Welcome to Heaven's Port, a place even the stuff of nightmares avoid like the plague.

RVQ is a survival horror with action elements. Anything that is not neutral towards you (because being friendly is quite difficult) will try to kill you in a slow and gruesome way AFTER having fun with your body, your mind, and your soul. To survive, you must stay on your guard, trust no one, and never face your challenges unprepared. Even the most harmless looking puppy could be your hangman.

Use your abilities to find the secrets of this damned city, what happened in the incident that took your family twenty years ago, and smite the evil that lurks in the darkness… or maybe bend it to your will.

You are Viktor Voss, soldier and thaumaturgist, an Executor of the Imperial Capital who dreams of becoming a Praetor, honoring the name of your family and destroying the Cleon Cultists, responsible for their deaths. Your talents caught the eye of your father’s illustrious friend, Lord Bertrand Tolsend Rosefield, and he decided to hire you for a special mission: protecting his city from the unspeakable dangers that are consuming it. The emperor’s right-hand man and spokesperson of the church, Cardinal Wilfried, personally wrote and sealed the official order, and you were transferred to the port city.

The catch is, that city is precisely the place you ran from twenty years ago, and although Lord Rosefield’s request was legitimate, the Cardinal’s exceedingly generous and fast action of dispatching one of the best and most promising executors in the capital is strangely proactive. That said, an official mission of this magnitude is a ticket for an early promotion, and you still have scores to settle with the place.

--------------------------------

The dense forests of the northern border of the empire bring back memories from your childhood. Bad memories. Not a single one worth remembering. Actually, no. It also reminds you of a song. Your mother would hum it to you when you were a kid, beneath your covers in the dead of the night, afraid of the beasts that tormented your family’s farm. She would sing to distract you from the sounds in your head, of guns firing and beastly roaring.

“Come in out of the rain thou sayest;
But thou ne'er step'st aside;
And I am trapped, I'm trapped;
A distance there is..."

Almost like a spell, the song used to relax you. Too bad there's not a single thing capable of doing that nowadays. A single good memory, huh? You’re being quite unfair. The day to day life at the Voss Property was not all horrors, at least when the sun was up. Remembering the past always makes you face the fragility of life; you had six brothers and sisters, a mother, a father, your grandparents, two uncles and their wifes, and five cousins living in that camp house.

Only you survived.

The carriage still hasn't reached the safe path through the woods to Faircarn Road, but must be very close now. It's still very early in the morning and this damn fog isn't helping anyone. You wished to arrive early in order to visit every place of interest as soon as possible, but the coachman keeps looking worriedly in all directions and that is definitely not a good sign. He noticed the birds are not chirping too. Soon enough, you feel a presence, faint, but so are all at a distance. An executor cannot be fooled. All manner of heresy leaves a dark energy in the air, and experienced thaumaturgists can feel it even several meters away.

This is dangerous.

>[X] Ask the coachman to go faster

Putting your head out the right window, you address the coachman, who is visibly shaken. The man turns his head slightly after you hit the door with your fist twice. The fog seems to be getting thicker than before in a very unnatural way. This is a trap, and you're not about to wait for it to be completed. Now is a good time as any to pick up the pace, since the escort doesn't seem to be coming anyway.

"Push the horses. Something is coming, and we don't want to be caught while in their territory."

"But this terrain is..."

"Doesn't matter. Do it."

"Y-Yes, your Excellency! Ya! Ya!"

A bit more confident, the man yells at the horses and vigorously whips the lead against their heads. The animals shriek and pick up the pace.

"Any idea why our escort isn't here?"

"The guard is too busy these days! Not even the hunters have a single day where they don't risk their lives on an expedition!"

So the reports weren't lying. This place really is a mess.

You return your head to the interior of the carriage just in time to feel a decrease in the surge of dark energy. The fog subsides, but that's the only good news you get. The coachman screams at something, but his scream is muffled by a roar, unlike anything you've heard before.

The carriage is hit head-on by something. Something big. And thrown sideways, but you were already holding on to the right window. As the vehicle digs into the soft earth, the hinges holding the traces break, setting the horses free. The animals jump around frenetically before sprinting ahead. As you lift yourself up to the window, a hooded figure grabs both your arms and looks down directly into your eyes.

"Ph'clathu mglw'nugah sh'luyeh athgn um'lagh?"

It's indecipherable mumbling actually sounded like a question, so you might as well answer.

"Sorry, but I'm taken."

You let go of the window, bringing your arm down along with the mysterious attacker, and break its nose with a headbutt strong enough to make it fall to the side of the carriage. Finally, you can pick yourself up and stand atop your transport, a vantage point that allows you to see how bad the situation is.

There are several enemies and no sign of the City Guard Escort that should have been with you for an hour now. There are two wolves, obviously modified by their dark arts, still being held by two heretics dressed as the one you just hit. At least six walking dead are with them. You should have been able to sense them much more clearly, but all you can feel is the miasma those two are conjuring to control their undead servants.

No one will help. You turn to the Coachman, who's just got out from under the rubble left after the accident.

"Hide."

The man immediately jumps out of the road, into the woods to your left. Now, there are heretics to be killed here. Better move before they do. You jump down driving the heel of your right boot on the head of the one who greeted you, still down, dizzy from your strike. It's a man, you can see now. So, how to go about this?

COMBAT PHASE

Enemies: 2 wolves / 3 heretics / 6 walking dead

The heretics' blood magic is always a concern, but you don't know the abilities of those wolves, and they seem to be much different than the usual undead corpses they employ. These animals seem alive, despite the horrible scars covering their faces, their clearly dislocated jaws, and mouths filled with teeth inside and out.

[A] - Attack heretics first. Intelligent beings are more dangerous. Plus, the dark arts.

[B] - Attack wolves first. Beasts are too strong and fierce to be ignored.

[C] - Attack walking dead first. They have the numbers, being surrounded will spell your doom.

B-the wolves. They seem to be minion makers, not sorcerers, and the undead wont pose a credible threat against us.

Do the heretics hace any marking that resembles another cult we have researched or encountered?
>>
>>2131203

During the Investigation Phase, you'll be able to think about everything that's happening. For now, you must survive the Combat Phase, but these just look like standard practitioners of the dark arts.

[B] Attack wolves first. Beasts are too strong and fierce to be ignored.

The heretics lose no time in their chanting. They must constantly feed energy to their walking dead, so their rotten bodies will not easily decay and fall apart in lumps of flesh, so they'll not be using their dark arts on you directly for now. The wolves, on the other hand, are promptly set free, and run towards you. They'll be the biggest threat, you reckon, so you retreat, to put more of a distance between yourself, the cultists and the walking dead, so that they won't be able to assist the wolves immediately.

It's time to hunt.

They'll be the biggest threat, you reckon, so you retreat, to put more of a distance between yourself, the cultists and the walking dead, so that they won't be able to assist the wolves immediately.

The plan works, but the wolves are much quicker than you imagine. Despite your vigorous run, they catch up to you in no time, but you turn around and slide down beneath both their bodies, already airborne in a double assault that would probably target your face. As they pass above you, you lose no time firing Aldebaran in the stomach of the silent one.

>The silent wolf has received 6+2 lethal damage.
>The silent wolf is severely weakened.

At close range, Aldebaran's supremacy is unmatched. You shoot the beats right at the base of the throat, and a whole as large as an apple appears where there once was flesh and bones. You missed its spine by a small margin, but the beast doesn't even manage to land properly, struggling in spasmodic movements.

The growling wolf turns towards you and manages to bite your arm faster than you could react, but you spin your body, despite the weight of your armor, and launch the beast into a nearby rock. The impact confuses the beast just enough for you to reload Aldebaran and shoot the thing in the face right as it jumped for another bite.

>The growling wolf received 6+4 lethal damage.
>The silent wolf perishes.

Though its head is deformed, a head is a head, you learn as the beast lands by your side, completely silent. he shot destroyed what remained of its skull, ceasing its life immediately. It IS ALIVE, and that is bizarre in and of itself. The heretics deal with the dead.

>The bite, although brief, was very powerful.
>You receive 01 points of damage.
>Left arm still usable.

HEALTH = 19/20

You easily decapitate the wolf with your Rapier and turn your attention to the soon to arrive pursuers. They are many, but not too many. Fighting against great numbers is impossible for a normal person, but you are an Executor, a thaumaturgist. The miracles that your body is capable of do not pale in comparison to the superhuman strength that the undead, stripped of their human limitations, can conjure.

The heretic you stomped is finally up. You wouldn't have had time to execute him before even if you tried. Those wolves would be all over you as soon as you took your eye off them. He, in particular, doesn't seem keen on a fighting, and flees, stumbling at first. Soon enough the heretics fill your vision and you can't worry about the one escapee any longer. The walking dead are fast and will charge at you, so you'll force your way past them and attack the heretics directly. Without their supply of dark energy, the corpses will fall apart, so their masters are your next target.

Feats are complex forms of auto-suggestion powered by your thaumaturgic affinity. By eliminating and suppressing thoughts and emotions, you expand the limits of certain bodily and mental functions with astounding results. Executors are feared for being capable of using this form of a miracle without previous preparation and with minimal side-effects. Sometimes you wonder if the heretics forget what it means to cross paths with one of you.

The two men exchange orders and unleash their undead upon you. Aldebaran has a limited supply of bullets, so you decide to take matters into your own hands. The wall of approaching corpses are both forming a unified front and protecting their masters, so the obvious choice is to break through.

You slash at the frontmost corpse extending your leg to a good position from where you can spring yourself, slamming into them shoulder first, forcing your way through. Your clothes resist the clawing and their bodies are not too heavy so you barely make it. Unfortunately, your balance is compromised.

Stumbling, you arrive in front of both targets unprepared for their retaliation. From his robe, the short heretic produces a small knife, that he uses to stab you in a single firm and strong motion. You block it by holding his arm right before the tip found it's way into your armpit. The blow was aimed at a very sensitive and unprotected spot, which shows these men have killed people before, and know how to do it very well. It's disgusting how natural the art of taking other people's lives come to them.

The other one nervously swings at you with his own dagger, slashing your left arm.

(cont.)
>>
>>2131652

Your lapse in concentration allows the short heretic to redirect his blow in a great display of dexterity, driving his knife in your left thigh. However, you're much bigger and physically stronger than both opponents. In a single spin, you slash both of them in the face, seizing the arm of the smallest one and forcing him to remove the knife from your leg. Then you break his nose with the pommel of your rapier and drive it in the stomach of the other one as it approached for another attack.

Your piercing blow impales the man cleanly, and he falls to the ground in great pain as you pull out the blade. The smaller heretic can barely see with the amount of blood on his face, but your attempt to slash at his neck fails as he rolls away.

>The small heretic has received 2+2 lethal damage +1 bash damage.
>The small heretic is weakened.

>The taller heretic has received 2+5 lethal damage +2 bash damage.
>The taller heretic has fainted, but still lives.

The walking dead swarm you right after, their unnatural claws, implanted through medical procedures with the only objective of making them a bit more effective in combat, shred parts of your protective gear, causing small wounds. One of them bites you in the right shoulder, but you're able to shake him off with sheer strength.

>Together, the attacks you suffered amount to a substantial amount.
>You receive 03 points of damage.
>Both your arms are still in good condition.

HEALTH 16/20 (BLEEDING)

As you prepare to fight the now weaker undead, and the last heretic, you hear the sound of horses in the distance. You bought enough time for that damn escort to arrive, or are these reinforcements for the heretics? The panic in the small bleeding heathen's face answers your question before you can think any further. Soon enough, seven horses appear from the curve of the road at the edge of the fog. They come even faster when the sight of your carriage becomes more clear.

In no more than a few minutes, they decapitate the corpses and set them on fire with incendiary bolts from their crossbows. The only one remaining is the passed out heretic.

After the dust settles, a young lad gets down from his horse and addresses you in a very formal tone.

"Good morning your Excellency, master Voss. Sir, we were ambushed on our way here and captain Hill was killed. Our second in command died too, attacked by some mysterious beast. I'm the third in command. We came as fast as we could."

"There were nine of you?"

"Twelve, sir."

Now there are only seven.

"What kind of ambush downs five mounted men in a safe road?"

"I don't know how they sneaked past border patrols, sir."

You sigh. The heat coming from the pile of burning corpses is pleasant, but the smell isn't. There's no point in blaming the young boy either, so you decide to go on with your investigation of what the hell just happened here.

--INVESTIGATION PHASE--

Things you noticed in this encounter:

>A roar before the carriage was hit.
>The fog was changing.
>The heretic that escaped spoke in a strange language.
>The wolves were not undead.

From the young guard's testimony, you can conclude that this was an ambush specifically designed to target your carriage, not some kind of coincidence, but how did they know you were coming? This information is supposed to be known only by the Executors' Office and Lord Bertrand Rosefield himself.

The road, the woods, the carriage and your sacred coachman who miraculously survived, can all be investigated as well.

[How do you proceed? What else do you want to investigate?]
>>

You approach the young guard. The men have set a perimeter and are observing the surroundings in high alert at his command. Despite being young, he seems experienced, probably from watching his superiors. Here in Heaven's Port, the situation is so bad that they get experience fast, or die.

It's a war. You've been to the border during the last part of the imperial campaign on Saari lands to the south, and in these men, you can see the same look you saw in your brothers-in-arms.

"What's your name, son?"

"I'm Dale, your Excellency."

"Dale, did you notice anything from the road? They didn't come at us from behind, but the front. Isn't Faricarn road supposed to be safe?"

"I don't know, sir. They seem to have come from the west, but shouldn't have been able to hide from our border patrol while carrying around a bunch of undead. We can smell these things from a mile away. It makes no sense."

H accompanies you as you check the road for trails, but find nothing but tracks from some kind of large animal.

"You said your second-in-command was killed by a beast?"

"Yes, sir. We saw it only briefly, everything happened so fast. The thing knocked the vice-captain from his horse and dragged him into the woods. We didn't have the heart to pursue, since we were so late in meeting your Excellency."

Your research of the heretics belonging reveals nothing but a few parchments with scriptures in codes. You keep them to present at the office.

(cont.)
>>
We should use our monocle to trace the path of the strongest miasma to see where they came from
>>
>>2131953

The tall heretic wakes up after you slap him in the face. Smeared with his own blood, the man wakes up only to realize he's bound by the hands and feet. The moment you approached him, all of the guards distanced themselves ever so slightly from both of you. They probably don't like seeing what Executors do when they have a prisoner.

The man attempts to free himself, but the rope is too strong and the knot well tied. You just watch him squirm, while admiring his knife. He attempts do conjure dark energy for some sort of last resort, but you already built a sanctuary here. No miasma forms at his command. Finally, you stab his hand, pinning it to the soft ground.

"AAAAHHHH! I'll tell you everything! I'll tell you everything!"

"But I'm not asking questions yet."

The pain must come first, otherwise, they don't tell the truth. You twist the knife a few times while the man screams. It's quite annoying, but work is work. After a few minutes, his hand no longer resembles anything other than a piece of meat, and you have to cauterize his wounds with hot iron to prevent him from bleeding to death. He screams a little more.

"Now, I want to know how you knew I was arriving, and who told you to come here."

"It's the f-f-father. T-The father told us... We c-can't disobey."

"Who's the father?"

"Our new l-l-leader, he's... he's with. t-the... t-the c-c-cultists."

"What?"

"He's the f-f-father... we can't... we c-c-c-can't..."

"The Cleon Cultists?"

"They k-know y-y-you... the know t-t-t-things... that no one s-s-s-should... we j-j-just..."

The man starts mumbling, then his eyes turn bloodshot.

He throws himself on top of you, and your natural reaction is to drive the knife up his throat. The precise blow ends his life in a cacophony of gurgling saliva and blood, and some of the guards around let out a sigh of relief. Young Dale is the only one with enough courage to approach you after the grotesque spectacle.

"Did you learn anything, your Excellency?"

"These heathens have nothing to teach. Do you have free horses?"

"Yes sir, they are at Faircarn Road entrance, just ahead."

"We'll go after burning the other corpses."

"By your command."

You examine the wolves, but they have no discerning characteristics other than wounds in their necks, near the head, as if a piece of meat from that area was deliberately taken away. Some sort of new ritual? Normally there's no way of controlling living beings other than possession. Have they discovered something new? Dale offers you and your coachman two horses as soon as you reach Faircarne. From here, there are many border patrols coming and going, and hunter parties as well. There will be no more troubles ahead.

"Dale, I want you to testify with me, at the office, about what happened here today. Visit us the day after tomorrow first thing in the morning. This is a summon."

"By your command, your Excellency."

You ride together in silence. This is way too much to happen in a single morning, and you notice that it's almost midday. The path through the woods of Faircarn Road gradually becomes less dense, till you finally arrive at your destination.

As soon as you exit the safe path through the forest, an open world reveals itself. Now, with the sea to your right, you can see the merchant capital of Heaven’s Port on the northern horizon. The chilly sea breeze reminds you that the fall season is about to begin.

After parting ways with the escort you pass the southern entrance of the city all the way to the stagecoach. You were supposed to be here a long time ago, and not nearly as covered in blood and dirt as you are. However, the silver crown of the church shining in your vest makes everything else irrelevant. The people casually passing by the place immediately greet you with salutes and curtsies.

You stand out way too much, and a hunchback soon approaches you with a submissive smile sculpted on his face. It looks like he's wearing a mask, because his expression lacks the subtle variations every normal person has.

“A tall and handsome golden haired gentleman carrying the silver crown of the Church… there is no mistake. Welcome to Rosefield Valley good Executor, Your Excellency, master Viktor Voss!”

You nod at the overly gracious gesture of the hunchback old man.

“Thank you, but shouldn’t it be ‘welcome to Heaven’s Port’?”

“Hahahahahahaha! My dear executor! You surely jest! No one can call this city ‘heaven’ and keep a straight face! Hahahahaha!”

He has a strange sense of humor, and his cackling is somewhat… disturbing. Is the situation here really THAT bad? No, you already know it is considering the Cleon Cultists not only caught wind of your visit, that should be a secret, but knew exactly when you would arrive and prepared an ambush. Also, he discarded your titles pretty fast and went straight to the informal ‘dear executor’, but the sentinels are direct subordinates to the Executors, so technically you are co-workers, even if on completely different levels. That shouldn’t be a problem. He continues.

“It’s better to say the name of the whole region. It’s a homage to our benign Lord too. Lord Rosefield’s exceptional handling of the city’s needs is awe-inspiring, and the only reason many have not lost hope yet. If not for him, we would be all doomed.”

Now he is being serious, and his tone is much more respectful, solemn, even. He must really admire Lord Rosefield, and rumors say that the whole city does. You do too, of course. It takes no regular willpower to have your domain under great pressure from the darkness without losing gold in the process. If the reports are correct, a commercial center like this should be deserted by now.

“I understand. You’re the sentinel who will escort me, I presume.”

“At the service of the executors. Sworn to the church and to his Majesty the Emperor. I’m the humble sentinel Laius Melquevedel. Give me the order, master Voss, and I’ll fulfill your EVERY. LITTLE. NEED.”

“I’ll pass on that.”

“Hahahahaha! See? You have a sense of humor too, master! Here in this city that’s an indispensable quality, you can take my word on this one.”

“Right…”

Laius picks up your baggage before you can say anything. Despite his looks and the laid back way he presents himself, he is serious about his work and stands at attention waiting for your commands. Now, what is your next move?

“Well then…” you say, decisively.

>Choose two

[A] “… lead the way to headquarters.” (to meet your new subordinate and colleagues)
[B]“… lead the way to the town’s market.” (to feel the city’s atmosphere and check shops)
[C]“… lead the way to the Rosefield Estate.” (to meet the Lord and friend who personally requested you)
[D]"... lead the way to the City Guard." (Faircarn Road should be safe, especially when an envoy is coming. Someone has to take responsibility)

[This is a VISIT choice. These cost time of your day. You can’t visit everywhere in a single day, so choose carefully where you want to go.]

>[A] “… lead the way to headquarters.” (to meet your new subordinate and colleagues)
>[C]“… lead the way to the Rosefield Estate.” (to meet the Lord and friend who personally requested you)

Laius offers you a towel and a small water plate. You clean most of the blood from your face and vest, but there's still a little here and there. Well, your colleagues will have to excuse you for being so impolite as to have a fight with a bunch of heretics and their hellspawn before introducing yourself. That train of thought is interrupted by the arrival of a new carriage.

"I shall carry your bagagge, sir."

"Thank you, Laius."

From the stagecoach, you go through the heart of the city, bustling with activity. Many of the merchants you see in the streets are either Oriental or Saari, as expected from a city at the border of the Empire. This is a sight that will never transpire in the capital, as the Emperor is paranoid when it comes to immigrants. After entering the walled interior of the city, region that houses the most important buildings, your carriage arrives at a beautiful square with a large fountain. One of the buildings in this area is the Executors' Office Heaven's Port Branch.

"Wait here."

"As you command."

You leave Laius and head inside the building. Despite being a well-designed structure, the office seems a bit old. Many sentinels are around, and they all seem to panic at the sight of you. The ones who were doing something cannot concentrate, and the one that were doing nothing are now searching desperately for something to do. You would like to tell them you're not here for an inspection, but would they believe it?

You climb up the stairs to the Praetor's Office and finally spot some bronze crowns of the church distributed around the place. The people wearing them are Executors, of course.

One of them greets you nonchalantly.

"We were worried when you didn't show up this morning, your Excellency. I'm glad you managed to arrive safely."
>>
>>2132197

"Didn't mean to make you wait, but there were surprises in the way. They'll be addressed the day after tomorrow in my official report."

You shake hands with the man. He frowns.

"So something did happen? Oh, I'm sorry, I should have already introduced myself. I'm Mariuz Proudmore, Combat Master."

"Viktor Voss. My pleasure."

You try not to dirty hind hand with blood, but fail. He doesn't seem to mind.

The young woman approaches you next.

"Maria Adrienne Hamill, Combat Master. I'll be your Excellency's aide."

"I'm looking forward to working with you." You shake her hand.

"So am I, master. Your Excellency is a legend at the Royal Academy. I'm still inexperienced, but I'll do my best."

"Is William here?"

"Yes, he'll see your Excellency right now." Mariuz answers and Maria leads the way to the last door on this side of the floor.

The long corridor echoes your steps clearly like a drum, and beyond that last door is a wooden desk. Mariuz frowns again, and he seems to have only now noticed that you called a Praetor Executor, a man who's a rank above your, "William" as if you were friends. He couldn't be farther from the truth.

(cont.)
>>
>>2132255

You open the door and go inside with a confident stride. As you arrive, the man behind the desk shuffles around a few pieces of parchment, cleaning his desk and storing them away in a drawer or another. Finally, he crosses his arms and meets your gaze with an expression full of many emotions, but hate is the easiest to perceive.

"Why the hell are you still alive?" His question makes both his subordinates turn their heads towards you.

They have no idea what's going on, but they definitely know they don't want to be here with you two.

"The sweet embrace of death is a blessing I'm not yet worthy of receiving." Your answer, in a challenging tone. "What about you? You are worthy, so just kill yourself already."

Your response is even worse than the poor executors by your side expected. You and the Praetor Executor, leader of Heaven's Port Branch, stare at each other for two full minutes exploding with tension, while they try their hardest to disappear into the corners of the room.

Then the man starts laughing and you smile slightly.

It feels good to bully the juniors. A partnership that should never happen between a delinquent and the true most promising student of the Royal Executors Academy is about to begin in the city of Heaven's Port. You walk towards the desk and embrace your now standing friend for the first time in five years.

"So..." he slaps your back with his palm a couple of times. "Let's burn some heretics."

RVQ - Session I - END
>>
>>2132325

My posts were much slower than I anticipated, because I couldn't use a lot of my pre-written stuff. So... yeah, I apologize for the few choices and short session. This is all still introduction so It's a bit boring, but bear with me.

It's also pretty late in my time zone right now, so I think I'll try running a bit earlier.

The quest will continue tomorrow at 4:00 PM Eastern. If anyone has questions, send them my way.

I'll also review the dice stuff so It can be done on a single roll. Thank you for stopping by!
>>
>>2132349
Thanks for running
>>
>>2132364

It's fun. I hope there are at least two people tomorrow too since I need many dice rolls and it gets boring If I have to do them myself.

By the way, totally rolled good for the players and bad for the NPC's today.

Those cultists couldn't even cast one of their blood magicks, and the wolves got shit DEX dices.

But this was the introduction battle, so I guess it's fine.
>>
>>2132523
I really do like the system but quests benefit from unique yet simple rolling. I don't have any specific ideas but that's my suggestion.

Rosefield Valley Quest will resume soon.

The dice system has been corrected;

More story to complement the introduction and establish the main questline;

A new system within the setting will be introduced;

And a long first night in the city that never sleeps (without a nightmare) will begin.

You sit across from the Praetor Executor. William and you went to the Royal Academy together and he’s only seven years older than you are. You share something that no other student could possibly understand: the total loss of one’s Family. William lost his at Crystal Lake, the third province, and his case was worse considering he lost not only parents and siblings, but also wife and children.

Combat Master Mariuz goes to a chair in the corner, while Maria stands at attention by the window to the left side of the room. In a serious tone, William addresses the elephant in the room.

“So, you were attacked?”

“Yes.”

“Lord Rosefield only let this office know of your arrival yesterday, and assured us this secret was absolute, in order to protect your arrival. Many Executors are ambushed while traveling if these matters are not handled discretely, especially a Royal like yourself. I understand why the Capital’s Office ordered absolute silence.”

He sighs.

“So I have to ask.” He continues. “How the hell did they know?”

“The letter could have been intercepted. It wouldn’t be the first time heretics faked an official seal.” You’ve seen it happen before. “Also, the leak could have been in the origin.”

“In the capital? That’s possible, but not very likely.” William dismisses.

“I agree”, you retort. “But we must consider everything.”

“Then, the leak could have been from this office.”

When Mariuz finishes his sentence, both you and William stare daggers at him, but Maria stares swords. He casually picks an apple from a nearby fruit basket and takes a bite, then shrugs.

“What? We must consider everything, right your Excellency?” He smiles.

“I urge you to not consider what might get you killed by Maria.”

William didn’t sound like that was a joke, and Maria is casually resting her hand on the pommel of her sword. Mariuz empties his lungs in exasperation and raises both arms in a gesture of apology, then resumes eating.

“I guess I’ll have to ask Lord Rosefield Personally.”

With that matter finished, you proceed to inform what happened in the attack in detail. This will all be in your report, and you still need young guard Dale’s testimony, but that will be the day after tomorrow. As you explain everything, both executors show considerable surprise at how light your wounds are, faced with such an ambush by yourself.

“Too much was out of the ordinary in this confrontation.” You shake your head. “One heretic speaking in jumbled nonsense if a common occurrence, but that man was using a language, I only realized he was talking because it all sounded like some kind of question.”

They weren’t behaving like the textbook examples of practitioners of the dark arts at all.

“Then there’s the beast. The animal that flipped the carriage and possibly attacked the captain of my escort. The fact that it didn’t stay behind to fight with his allies intrigues me, it certainly was a huge abomination. The whole thing seemed like they didn’t really want to kill me.”

“I’m pretty sure they did, but weren’t able to. Your Excellency is very strong.” Maria compliments you with absolute sincerity. “Trying to understand how they think is a lost cause, that’s why your Excellency is having a hard time figuring out this incident. Maybe there’s no rhyme or reason to it.”

“Yes, maybe. But we will act under the assumption that it isn’t so that we won’t regret it later.”

“Your words are wise, your Excellency. Excuse my interruption.” She replies, bowing slightly.

William smiles. It seems Maria is one of those people full of honor that you heard about. Usually, sons and daughters of nobles that become Executors in search for renown just because they were born with an affinity for thaumaturgic arts. You can see in her eyes that, despite being experienced in combat, and having had a part in her fair share of bloodshed, she doesn’t know true terror yet. She’s green, this aide of yours, but there’s plenty of time to mature.

“Well, I’m just glad things didn’t end before even beginning. You should run along to the Lord’s Estate before it gets dark. You don’t want to take the roads outside of the city while it’s dark outside, I promise you that.” The Praetor shakes your hand again as you both rise. “It’ good to see you, my friend.”

“There’s activity every night?”

Every night.” He emphasizes it. “Hunter parties are always on full alert, and we lose two to three sentinels a week. The cemetery has no space for new graves since last year.”

Damn. The way he said it sounds like a plea for help. Why didn't the main office dispatch a task force with executors from the capital here sooner? You alone can't possibly handle everything that seems to be happening here. This is clearly a very dire situation. Whatever questions you have, you might as well share with Lord Rosefield. He certainly expects your visit today, so you decide to go while there's still daylight to provide comfort.

Outside the office, Laius still waits patiently for you while entertaining the coachman. Your arrival agitates the small balding man, and he bows to you repeatedly while opening the door to the carriage. In a calm tone, with many thoughts going through your mind, you utter a single word.

“Rosefield.”

The coachman whips the horses and makes haste. The afternoon won’t last forever.”

The carriage exist's the city through the northern road. The Rosefield Estate is very close, the closest property to the city. From a distance, you can already see that it is an impressive mansion. Normally that would not be cause for alarm, considering he’s lord of these lands, vassal to the Emperor and one of his close friends. However, as a denizen of the imperial capital, you’re used to the grandiose constructions erected by its pompous nobility. Even if this place is a famous trade point, to have a lord’s mansion seem big even in your eyes, in the eyes of someone used to the engineering marvels at the heart of the empire…

“We call it the pearl of the valley. Some say it is too big for this city. Too big for the east of the empire. Like it doesn’t belong here. Sometimes I wonder myself.”

Laius says in a whisper, apparently noticing your bewilderment.

"That's not something you should say about your Lord, Laius."

As the sentinel turns to you in shock, realizing his faux pas, you raise your hand and dismiss his worry with a light wave.

"But I believe you are right. This is the kind of construction I didn't expect to see so far away from the capital."

"Your Excellency has experience with construction?"

"I do not. You?"

"I'm a mason, dear Executor. Worked for the Smiths for ten years before becoming a sentinel. The archbishop himself blessed me once."

>Laius' trust in you has risen!
>People who trust you may share secrets and give important information!

“But be careful in the future." You advise him in a light tone. "Your remark was innocent, but people can’t read minds. Your best intentions can still get you in a dungeon with red-hot iron marking your skin.”

The nobility is cruel. If someone other than you heard him say that, they definitely would take it as an insult to the Lordship and the Crown. A sentinel like him would be punished without having a chance to defend himself. Such is the state of the imperial society. You didn’t make the rules, but you can sure teach those around you not to break them.

“You are most benevolent, master Voss. I shall not forget your words.”

The carriage passes the inner gate to the mansion, and two young butlers tending to the gardens ready themselves by your side, ready to accompany you to the door.

“This is far enough. I’ll go the rest of the way myself. Go to the INN and see to my baggage. I'll return in one of the lord's carriages."

“May God be with you, your Excellency.”

It seems he understood your message. Shaking the cold off from your bones you walk to the main entrance. One of the guards immediately recognizes the crown of the church in your coat and escorts you to the corridor past the front door of the estate’s main building. God, you're walking so much and this is just the entrance. This place is so much bigger up close. What was Lord Rosefield thinking when he ordered a manor this size built?

The interior doesn’t surprise you. Polished wooden floors covered in western carpets and furs, paintings in silver frames on the walls, beautiful vases, and decorations from the southern Saari deserts and the eastern trade caravans. The reception is the size of a ballroom, illuminated by a ridiculously large chandelier. Despite the space being so ample, the concentration of eye-catching decorations per square meter makes it seem full.
>>
>>2136850

Somehow you know this is not to Lord Rosefield’s taste. Must be the work of his new wife, the one that everyone knows all his heirs hate. You consider telling him the relationships in his family are somehow leaking to the general public, but considering the calamity the nights bring to the city, according to reports sent to you by the Executors office, he doesn’t have the mental reserves to spare. As you finish that thought, movement coming from the stairs catches your eyes.

Which is strange. Your ears should have heard something first, but the figure holding the sides of her skirt makes no sound as if gliding down the stairs. An apparition of porcelain white skin, black hair and black eyes, perfect posture, and unreadable complexion, capable of eluding the ears of a soldier, of an executor, of someone with senses sharpened to an almost inhuman level.

The woman, dressed in a very elegant work dress with frills and laces, black and white in color, but surprisingly light and floaty, walks up to you in confident strides with a professional smile designated for special guests in her lips. She’s never seen you before, yet she can pull off that “it’s so good to see you again” smile you detest with ease. It’s disgusting, honestly. She can probably fool most people, but you’re not one of them. On your part, you make no effort to smile back. No one expects Executors to smile anyway.

“Esteemed guest, your Excellency Royal Executor Viktor Voss, I present myself to you as Head-maid of the Rosefield Estate. You may call me by my given name, Delila. I am but a servant Lord Rosefield personally chose as responsible for your Excellency’s wellbeing when visiting the Estate. Please, do not hesitate to ask anything of me, no matter how tall the order, and I shall rise to the task.”

Indeed. Very professional. Very… nostalgic? Suddenly the “it’s good to see you again” smile doesn’t seem so out of place.

“Please.”

>Delila's trust in you has risen!
>People who trust you may share secrets and give important information!

As you walk with her through the maze that is this place, a single name emerges on your mind.

Katalyna Von Schwarzkreuz

Everything about this woman is a mystery, from why she came to this city to how she became the Lord’s wife right after doing so. You only heard a rumor at the time it happened, but it surprised you nonetheless. Lord Rosefield loved his late wife too much, and they got together too soon after her passing.

You want to ask about it, but Delila will definitely give you rehearsed answers. You can’t work with that. Rehearsed answers and filled with half-truths and unnecessary flattery. Someone is much more likely to say good things about a bad person they like, and when employees are involved it’s even worse. Some are way too loyal to their masters, or fear them too much, to say anything compromising. You’re not seeking dirt on Lord Rosefield, as that would be a silly pursuit considering his character, but you want TRUE information. As a professional inquisitor, you know how to be both violent and relentless, intimidating, and even friendly.

It all depends on how you ask it.

“Lady Von Schwarzkreuz… master?”

“Yes. I know her family from the capital, they are very famous and I had the privilege of speaking with some members a few times. I’d like to know a bit about her as to make our first meeting as delightful as possible.”

“I understand. Milady is a beautiful woman, very knowledgeable about all themes. She’s very well versed in politics as expected from someone of her lineage. She loves wine as much as the Lord himself and they often appreciate a couple of glasses together while listening to young princess Mina playing the violin.”

“I hope their relationship is good. It seems the heirs are still shaken by their mothers’ unfortunate passing.”

“That is true, they don’t seem to like her presence, even though it’s not my place to say such a thing…”

“Don’t hesitate, you can tell me anything. I’m here to help the Lord.”

“Well, there’s a clear strain in their relationship. The male heirs don’t seem to mind too much, especially young master Nathaniel who’s quite friendly with her. But lady Nathalia and the young princess are very aggressive. It has caused no little amount of trouble here in the mansion, including many broken porcelains. The Lord, on his part, is completely in love.”

Interesting. Lord Rosefield is a very strong-willed man. He wouldn't let himself be influenced, not even by true love, but that doesn’t mean he’s particularly perceptive. Maybe his daughters have realized something he didn’t. Your long walk with Delila finally reaches what looks like an office with huge double doors. The Head-maid knocks three times with perfect intervals between each knock.

“His Excellency, Royal Executor Viktor Voss is here to see you, milord.”

“Send him in.”

Delila immediately pushes the heavy doors open, then stands aside without setting a single foot inside. You can already see Lord Rosefield seated beside the fireplace with a bottle of high-quality winter beverage in his hand. He smiles at you, and you can’t help but smile back at your father’s best friend.

“Viktor... My friend... It’s been fourteen years since we last spoke? Look at how much you’ve changed. You wear the crown of the church well. It becomes you.”

“Your Lordship honors me. I still have a long way to go.”

You share a brief embrace shoulder to shoulder. You're much taller than the Lord with your 1,93m (6'4") and he firmly grabs your shoulders as if testing your poise. Needless to say that you don't budge an inch even when the man applies quite the amount of strength into shaking your upper body. Satisfied, he slaps your arms a couple of times.

"Strong. That's all I need to say. Your father would be so proud, and so am I."

"I do not deserve your Lordship's praise."

“Oh please, no formalities. Your father was my savior, and your master is my best friend. To have you under my wing as someone who will help me in a time of need such as this is nothing short of the will of God. It’s fate. To me, you are family. Call me Bertrand.”

“That surely is beyond my stature.”

“We can keep appearances when in public, but right now we are not, am I wrong?”

“Then, as you wish Bertrand.”

You both sit, and the man gestures to the beverage. You diligently fill up to cups and you share a toast to nothing in particular. To your reunion perhaps. A toast without an announcement is a sign of frinedship that says: "We don't need a reason to join our glasses". You are very glad the Lord is so pleased to see you after all these years.

“Viktor. We should not corrupt our first meeting with talk of the beasts and heretics from the get-go. Please. Tell me about you. Tell me what the son of my savior has done since I last saw him. I’m sure the one who is called ‘the most promising in the new generation’ has a lot to share with an old man like me, to whom heroism and achievement are far in the past.”

“Your handling of this city is a heroic achievement in and of itself.”

“Hahahaha… maybe you are right.”

With that, Lord Rosefield gestures to the wine and appetizers and rests his chin in his right hand with an amused expression. Well, you’re not going to argue with the Lord, so it’s time to tell a tale. But which? Perhaps something that will reminesce of the past, or something that will put him in a good mood?

Two completely different votes.

We're going to need some sort of tie-breaker, but I hate those, takes away from the interactiveness in my opinion.

So, to try and fix that, how would you guys vote if I let you pick three (03) alternatives?

CHOOSE THREE INSTEAD OF TWO

>[A] – Tell him about your escapades in the academy. [funny]

Jesus... running with few voters is a pain in the butt. I don't have much pre-written stuff on this so you guys are going to have to wait a bit.

Since B and C are common among your votes I'll go with these two.

Perhaps a touching tale followed by exciting tales of bravery may be the best alternative. You do have a lot of stories to tell, so it comes naturally. Being with someone you know very well also helps.

MAGISTER:

(after a few minutes)

“That’s exactly what I expected from Karl.”

The Lord smiles as you proceed with your tale. You started from someone the Lord definitely wanted to know about: Magister Karl, his notorious best friend, and one of the greatest thaumaturgists of this decade.

“I’m sad that I haven’t been able to see him in a year.” Lord Bertrand continues. “He’s always so busy. So, did you two travel together?”

“Master Karl talked a lot about you too, Bertrand. It would be our pastime on the longer trips. My thaumaturgic affinities where being honed at the time, and since it was a very important part of the training he wouldn’t leave my side. Makes me think I didn’t deserve a master as good as him. He regretted deeply leaving the academy to resume his duties as Royal Executor, mainly because he couldn’t visit his family and your lordship anymore.”

“Karl… that fool. I owe him so much, as much as I owe your father, Viktor. I fear I’ll lose him too, and became incapable of repaying yet another friend for his kindness and support.”

“You’ve supported him plenty. Like I said, he told me a lot about you two. I can tell you right now, master Karl is the one who thinks he’s in debt, and that just proves how much of a character you both have.”

The Lord breaths in deeply, then drinks from his almost empty cup as to divert his thoughts somewhere else. His appearance is that of someone who’s been reminded of many sweet memories. This was a good choice.

CHALLENGES:

(after a few minutes)

“A flesh Golem?” Bertrand raises his eyebrows. “I’ve heard of them, but I don’t think one has ever appeared even here.”

“The heretics that make it to the capital are not ordinary. The Emperor likes to make sure his city is safe, security there is almost impenetrable, which means that whoever manages to hide under the guards and executors noses…”

“Are the best of the worst.” The Lord spits.

“We found a huge atelier, but It looked more like a butchery if you ask me, we were literally knee deep in blood while exploring its basement. That’s where we found it. The thing was at least 2,5m and very much pissed at our intrusion. It probably had body parts from over five people sewn together. An aberration that emanated so much miasma the sentinels could barely breathe.”

“How did you fell such a beast?”

“Bullets didn’t work, I can tell you this much. After careful deliberation, and by careful I mean the two seconds the thing gave us while we shot it full of holes without causing any significant damage, I and the five Executors in the raid decided to cut it to pieces. Meat is meat, after all.”

“I bet that went well.”

“I woke up in the hospital three days later, so the plan was successful. If it hadn’t been I wouldn’t have woken up at all.”

The Lord smiles. Though he didn’t want to talk about the horror that surely is robbing him of his sleep here in Heaven’s Port, you made sure the story was exciting enough and unusual enough that it would have a greater effect in his curiosity. As a storyteller himself, Lord Bertrand surely likes to have a few incredible tales to entertain a guest or another.

>Lord Rosefield was entertained by your stories.
>both TRUST and RESPECT increased.

"You looked like you could barely smile when you got here. The kind of look I hate to see on a friend." Bertrand points to you. "You’ve seen some disturbing sights, haven’t you?”

“Every Executor does so that our imperial citizens don’t have to.”

“Yes. Spoken like a true son of the Empire. I’m afraid I called you here to ask for a lot. It pains me since I should be the one helping you after everything that’s happened. My debt is one of life, that can only be paid with another life.”

“Do not think for a moment I don’t want to be here, Bertrand. Nothing would make me happier than banishing the darkness from this place while helping a friend of the family.”

Lord Rosefield nods to himself and shifts in his seat. He puts his glass on the table and assumes an erect posture, arms resting in the chair. That’s his ‘official business’ image. He really has the airs of a Lord when serious.

“Humm. In this case, my request is simple: The Cleon Cultists are back, stirring the heretics and witches with their wicked machinations, financing their actions and expanding their activities like never before, as if preparing for something unprecedented.”

Cleon Cultists. Yeah, something was definitely very wrong with all this. The Cultists are the most powerful heretics that ever were, and seemed to be underground for the longest time. Their last great action was twenty years ago, on a day you'll never forget. The Lord pauses, putting more strength in his voice. His tone manages to intimidate you, and you’re not even the target of his hatred.

“I want them burned at the pyre. All of them. They have no place in my domain.”

“Yes, milord. For the Empire and the Church, it shall be done.”

“Good. Show me results as quickly as possible, and I’ll use my influence to give you extra resources, information, anything you need to keep at it. Unfortunately, I cannot interfere with the Executors Office’s internal affairs, so that part will be entirely up to you.”

Unfortunately? That means he tried. That’s a pretty dangerous declaration to make so openly, and he knows it, but it seems his idea was to show he’s ready to do anything to help you.

“Do not worry, I have a good relationship with Praetor William."

"That's even better. These heretics are wretched creatures, no longer human. Show them no mercy, Executor. Show them not an ounce of mercy.”

“Yes, milord.”

He relaxes, and so do you. God, when he goes into “lord mode” he is terrifying. It’s like you’re speaking to a completely different person than the man who was talking about sweet memories from the past a few minutes ago.

"By the way, as you may have noticed by my state, I've ran into a bit of trouble when arriving. An ambush at the entrance to Faircarn Road. It seemed very specifically designed to target me, and not someone else."

"Impossible. No one knew of your arrival until yesterday, and I only told Mr. Helmsker ate the Executors Office."

"We must assume it was compromised in some way. Do what you can on your side to find out how this could have been leaked."

"Yes, it's a serious matter indeed. I'll see to it immediately."

After some more small talk, the Lord gets up and you walk with him to the door. This has been a pretty long day, and the night will be even longer. That's so obvious, that Bertrand taps your back lightly a couple of times. Everyone expects great things from you, and you expect victory from yourself. Tonight is going to be the first step.

“Though I said I want results as quickly as possible, the city is big, and has problems everywhere. So start by getting used to the place during your patrols. Just don’t get too relaxed, not that this place will allow you to.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

"I'd invite you for dinner, but I imagine you still have a lot to do on your first day here. I'm also sorry, all my family is visiting the Tolsend household today, and I can't introduce you to them."

"It's fine. As for dinner, 'll accept as soon as I'm settled."

"Go with God my friend."

Delila gives back your coat and arranges a carriage just as the sun starts to settle on the horizon. The only thing you can think of is that the city will become a playground or the darkness once the sun hides its face. There's way too much ground to cover in this city, but your colleagues must have a good idea of what to expect. After checking at the INN you'll head to the Executor's Office again, and organize some sort of reconnaissance group.

Where you'll go with them is the question.

CHOOSE ONE.

>[A] Faircarn Road - What happened there still intrigues you.

>[B] City limits - Supposedly there are occurrences around the city's limits every night. Time to gauge just how bad things are.

>[C] Ask William - Your friend knows this place better. He'll know where you can best make use of your information-gathering night.

You arrive at your INN safely, and notice a particularly tall woman dressed in combat attire, armed, and very sharp, looking around in a nervous manner that is scaring every person in a twenty meter radius. It’s Maria Adrienne Hamill, your green subordinate. As you exit the carriage she notices you and visibly straightens her posture even more. You meet her at the entrance with a handshake.

“It’s good to see you again your Excellency. How was your visit?”

“Adequate.” You really don’t want to talk to other people you barely know how close your relationship with Lord Rosefield is. “Something happened?”

“No, your Excellency. I simply came to be of service. His Excellency Praetor Helmsker told me you definitely wouldn’t want to rest, and that I should meet you here at the INN and assist with whatever you need.”

“Excellent. I need you to form a reconnaissance party. Just sentinels. You and I will be thaumaturgic power enough by ourselves.”

“As you command. What are we surveying?”

“That depends. I’ll go to the office with you. I need to speak to William about the best course of action. This city has changed excessively since I last visited. I can’t tell left from right yet.”

“I know the city like the palm of my hand, sir. Not once have I lost my bearings in this region since I was just a kid. Leve our navigation to me.”

“Good. I’ll be relying on you.”

The next bit will be fairly long since it involves combat, so I'll wrap this session up in the next post and we will finally start the quest without this amount of blablabla next weekend.
>>
>>2137482

The INNkeeper greets you with a huge nervous smile. You’re used to everyone being weary of Executors, since you have a fame of being heartless killers, torturers, and capable of inhuman deeds. They feel safe around you, but also weary. Their reaction reminds you that in order to fight monsters, one must become a monster too. What more will you do in the name of the church and the crown now that you arrived at this damned port city that took away everything you ever had?

It’s almost funny that you’re here again. It’s almost funny that the Cleon Cultists are back. It’s almost funny that (after waiting for twenty years, training, crying, screaming, fighting, burning heretics at the pyre in the imperial capital and learning everything you needed to fight the evils the human mind decided to play with) they would return. Maybe he’s here too. Yes, maybe he is.

From all the memories you have of the time spent awake on that dreadful night at the “nightmare farm”, only one is crystal clear; only one doesn’t seem like a vision from the life of someone else. The memory of a single man standing amidst the blood and entrails of your family, arms wide open, chanting on a foreign language verses you couldn’t understand, on his knees, in front of a big triangle of light.

Diangelo Calisto.

The father of all darkness. The greatest of all heretics. Founder of the Cleon Cultists.

You find yourself yearning for him. He should be here. He has to be here. You want him to be here, because now… now you’re different. Now you’re not a young boy crying and vomiting over himself pathetically while everything around him was destroyed.

Now you are an Executor, and the night calls to you too.

Than you so much for participating. Players will have much more interaction starting from next thread so look forward to it.

Maybe the introduction got a bit too dense, but I want this story to have a significant plot that can be genuinely enjoyed along with the adventure part. The characters are also a big part of it, so I want to really give them personality and make them seem like real people.

Comments, suggestions, questions, I'll be answering anything. I'll ask for archival in a couple of minutes.

RVQ - Rosefield Valley Quest Session III

Hope you guys are liking the quest so far.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

You and Maria take the carriage to the Executor’s Office. The region protected by the inner walls is relatively active even at night, a contrast you do not fail to notice. When entering the city, while the sun was setting, you saw that the people who live outside the walls were already in a hurry. Shops closing, houses being sealed shut with wooden bars and iron chains… women and children basically disappeared, and only the strongest and most suspicious looking men were still walking around. If that’s not an indicator of the nights at Heaven’s Port, nothing is.

The office also changed. The stillness in the air from midday completely disappeared, and all around the office, inside it and at the square in front of it, horses and equipment are lined up for checking and repairing. Sentinels are everywhere, arming themselves with carbines and blessed charms from the church. Without thaumaturgic capabilities, they are weak like flies when faced against a Blood Magick user, but still very useful against their familiars and the walking dead, that always show up in numbers too large to be taken lightly despite their lack of intelligence.

As you climb down the carriage, at a glance, you count at least 80 men. This is a very large force, the size expected from a raid.

“There’ll be a raid today?”

“No, your Excellency, these are just from a patrol party.”

“Just a patrol? How many sentinels does this branch have at its disposal?”

“I believe we now have around a regiment worth of manpower, sir.”

“You have around 1,500 sentinels? How does the branch pay for this? I doubt the capital sent resources to pay all these people just to protect the inner walls.”

“They definitely didn’t. Lord Rosefield personally sees that the sentinels are well paid and hires a lot of them for us, though he doesn’t seem to like us very much.”

Wait. What?

“Lord Rosefield doesn’t have a good relationship with this office?” You frown, but manage to suppress the surprise in your voice.

“He seems to avoid us, though I’m not really sure. His Excellency Praetor Helmsker tried many times to have audiences with the Lord, but he always seems to be busy. I believe they only ever met once, and the Lord has never actually visited us here at the branch. Is that strange? I don’t really know how these political things work, I just shoot the bad guys ‘till they stop moving.”

(cont.)
>>
>>2150893

That’s very strange. In every province, the relationship between the Lordship and the Executor’s Office is one of absolute courtesy. The executors are very high authority figures, and their words weight a lot with the power to accuse and judge those who practice forbidden arts. Every noble always wants to be as close to the Executors as possible, in order to stay away from their fangs. Lord Rosefield seems to be taking the opposite approach.

You also remember he has just told you that he ‘couldn’t interfere with the executor’s office internal affairs’. Well, of course he couldn’t. He doesn’t seem to be trying in the first place. What is even going on here between the Lordship and this branch? Both Rosefield and Helmsker seem to be keeping something from you, and that’s not a good sign at all.

“Your Excellency?”

While you were spacing out, you both reached the entrance to the office. Maria calls out to you and stands straight as an arrow, like a soldier.

“With your permission, your Excellency, I’ll get together a reconnaissance party as per your request. How large should be our force?”

Choose one:

>[A] “Find five strong. We’ll be discreet and travel light. The objective is not to fight.”

>[B] “Find twelve strong. If the night has something grim to offer, we have to be prepared.”
>>
>>2150907
>>[B] “Find twelve strong. If the night has something grim to offer, we have to be prepared.”
>>
>>2150934

>[B] “Find twelve strong. If the night has something grim to offer, we have to be prepared.”

“A slightly bigger party then?”

“We’ll not look for trouble, but trouble might just look for us.”

Your remark makes the Executor smile confidently. Maria probably likes killing heretics as much as you, and that is saying a lot.

“By your command, your Excellency.”

After parting with your aide at the entrance, you quickly find your way to William’s office. Many other executors that weren’t here when you visited earlier are now walking around doing numerous tasks. The nighttime is the busiest time, it seems. Two of them, in particular, wear the silver crown of the church, same as you, which means they are Royal Executors. Perhaps exchanging a few words with them would not be for the best, since they seem to be in a rush, giving out many orders to their subordinates and shuffling through paperwork.

You knock twice and enter the director’s office.

“Viktor? Didn’t expect you to return. How was the meeting with Lord Rosefield?”

“He told me a few interesting things. One of them was that he suspects the Cleon Cultists are back. I’m wondering why you didn’t say anything.”

William, who was busily reading through some reports and sorting them out on top of his desk (and scribbling over them as if correcting what he doesn’t like), finally puts the documents down and rests in his chair. You take a sit in front of him and cross your arms, in a manner that perfectly depicts your discontent. He scratches his head.

“I know what you’re thinking, and no, I didn’t hide it from you because I thought you were going to freak or something like that. I just didn’t want to talk about that on our first meeting.”

“You’re unnecessarily considerate. Lord Rosefield said something similar, but only for our first words.”

“Sorry. I was glad to see a friend again, didn’t want to spoil it. The fact is, Lord Rosefield is right, we have found many indications that the Cleon Cultists might be back. They have been in hiding for eighteen years now, only making solo appearances here and there, so nobody really knows what to make of it. To be honest, we’re not really sure… I mean, we weren’t, but last week an entire family served as blood sacrifice near the Wealdfolk Woods. The ritual matches exactly what used to happen when they were active.”

(cont.)
>>
>>2150961

You recall what happened at Faircarn Road. With an encounter as strange as that, the Cleon Cultists were the first thing that came to your mind. Irrational events seem to perfectly fit their modus operandi. One could argue that the heretics, in general, are quite 'sane' while the Cultists are truly insane.

“‘The Cultists’, is what that heretic said when I inquired him on who sent them to ambush me this morning. So, there’s no mistake?”

“That about confirms it, but before I send something official to the capital, since the main office will be interested in knowing the public enemy number 1 is back, we need concrete evidence. At least a cadaver.”

“I can get one of those.”

William frowns at your insidious tone.

“Of course you can, so be careful. You know better than anyone what the Cleon Cultists are capable of. The golden rule is still the same: don’t fight one of them alone. Can I trust you to remember that?”

Choose one:

>[A] – “We’re Executors. We never play hero.” (+TRUST)

>[B] – “You can trust me to not attack when I don’t have a chance.” (+RESPECT)

“Yeah, I was already expecting that kind of answer. You’ve been like this since the academy… a much better Executor than I, in a way. Just don’t go dying on me.”

“I don’t plan to.”

You part your lips slightly, with a discreet smirk. He sighs, and then you both laugh.

>William's respect for your has risen!
>People who respect you will listen to your words and obey/agree with you more easily!

“Don’t worry, I trust you. So, what can I help you with? You came to talk about something else?”

“Yes, I want to start my investigations, but this place has changed way too much. I need some guidelines.”

“Oh, yes, yes, I didn’t have THIS talk with you. I knew I had forgotten something.”

William produces a map from one of his drawers and cleans his desk, unrolling the parchment on top of it. The map is very detailed and accurately drawn to scale, work of a cartographer of great skill. The Praetor points to the regions depicted on the map while explaining.

“We divide the city into five areas and the outskirts in two. Here we have the Inner District, where we are now, the Residential District, the Scarlet Market, the Harbor, and the Slums. On the outskirts of town, we have the Properties that belong to the imperial vassals, and the Outlands. As the director of Heaven’s Port Branch, I’m ashamed to admit that every single one of these areas has heretical activity, though some in a more discreet manner than others. The city has simply grown too much. We have more than 200.000 imperial citizens, 50.000 honorary citizens, and probably around 300.000 immigrants that haven’t yet bought citizenship. And the ships that sail south bring more every day.

Yeah, that seems about right. This place is the biggest of the seven provinces. The third largest probably has only 250.000 people total, and the others share similar, slightly lower numbers. There really is a need for a large Sentinel force on top of the city guard considering the sheer size of the place.

“Undermanned?”

“Thanks to Lord Rosefield’s kindness we have barely enough people to get something done, but not enough to act independently and rip the evil from its roots. For the longest time, we have just been putting out the fires without extinguishing the source of the sparks. I guess that’s why you’re here now.”

(cont.)
>>
>>2150991

There’s a lot of ground to cover, but the perspective of finally being face to face with the cultist again makes it worth it. You waited far too long for them to appear again. Since their last attempt at conjuring whatever it is that they worship failed, everyone has been wondering when the next try would come, and who would be the next Diangelo Calisto. To you, it makes no difference. Whatever they plan to do, you’ll stop it, and this time none will escape to secretly rebuild their sect.

“That’s the gist of it.” William knocks on the table a couple of times. “I don’t recommend going to either the Outskirts or the Properties at night without a Hunter Task Force on your back and a lot of fire power, and here in the city you should avoid the Slums until it’s unavoidable. There’s something heavy going there, and if we go in blind, there will be way more casualties than what we can afford. On top of that, the place is a damn maze. Basically, let’s find out what we’re dealing with first, then we can act there.

You consider all this carefully. Since this is the first day, and you did come here to listen to someone who actually knows the place, taking his advice seems to be the best course of action. Tomorrow you can act on your own instincts, but for today, the Praetor will call the shots. On a different note, you still haven’t met this branch’s Gadget Master.

“One last thing. I need to speak to the branch’s Gadget Master. My pistol uses slightly modified bullets.”

“Oh, of course. He’s… a little strange… an eccentric man, I mean. Tonight he’s at the morgue dissecting bodies from our last raid, and will probably still be there tomorrow. Perhaps you should pay him a visit, he rarely comes by the office. His workshop is near the entrance of the Inner District, you might find him there.”

“Thank you.”

Your party already awaits you when you step out of the office. The square is now almost empty, and a few sentinels are getting together to form yet another patrol group. The twelve that Maria got together are all strong looking veterans that she handpicked for this. Seriously, this woman is way too diligent. William is obviously honing her for a promotion in the future, by putting her under your command. He wants your help making her into a Royal Executor because he believes she has what it takes.

Maybe she does.

All the men stand by their horses, at attention. Maria walks up to you and puts her fist to the badge on her vest. You do the same, hitting the Silver Crown o yours. All the sentinels repeat the gesture right after and stomp their boots on the ground in a perfectly choreographed move that makes the sound echo through the whole square.

“Are we heading out, your Excellency?”

“Yes, to the Scarlet Market. Do you know your way there?”

“Better than anywhere in the city, I live there sir.”

“Excellent. I’m looking for places with suspicious activity but no incidents.”

“Wouldn't it be better to go where things… happen?”

“To find the cannon fodder, yes. The smart heretics don’t like to attract attention.”

Aldebaran: A heavy-duty pistol with great stopping power at close range and fast reloading. Gifted to you by the Royal Executors Academy Gadget Master, Dominic De’Clos.

The market is well organized but big. Too big. And there are many places to hide in the alleyways and basements of questionable establishments. You go around in groups of three, making signals to the city guards to clear the places you’ll go through. Soon enough your entire party is already familiar with your procedure and actively explore without going too far from the center of the formation, occupied by you and Maria. When you have to split, each takes six sentinels.

The few people on the streets are approached casually by you. Most immediately notice the silver crown on your vest, but some appear to be clueless, thanks to the darkness. Most pedestrians stick to the well-illuminated areas near the most visited shops, which open even at night. The bars are also lively despite the fear in the eyes of the waitresses. They surely have seen some things.

“Near the Scarlet Bridge, there’s always those women walking around with bags full of something. I don’t what they’re carrying, but at night? I bet It’s not corn. They’re there today too.” – Says the man with a carriage wheel on his back.

“I don’t like that witchcraft that the potion seller practices. Why does the church ignore people like her? Her shop should’ve been closed a long time ago! Go visit it, your Excellency! You’ll see! She even seduces the men to try and get them to do things for her! So unsightly!” – Says the sassy old lady in maid clothing.

“Scarlet Bridge? Yeah, I don’t go there at night, better to go around the leas patrolled places. There are many shortcuts you can get here at the market, but some are just not safe, like that one near the Longhorn INN. That place gives me the creeps.” – Says a young stable boy, on his way to a bar.

“Whol’ place is nuts yer Excen’cy. Yer gon’ need some reeeeal legwork findin’ safe passage ‘ere on the east side. The bridge? Yeah, I don’t thin’ there’s anythin’ going on there but the place just reeeeeks don’t it? I won’t be near the damn place to find out!” – Says a sailor with a bottle of wine in his hands.

“Scarlet Bridge it is.” Maria signals to your party. “What are the rules of engagement, your Excellency?”

(Choose one.)

>[A] – Scout and survey. (prioritize information gathering, retreat if attacked)
>[B] – Search and destroy. (prioritize information, retaliate if attacked)
>[C] – Extreme prejudice. (prioritize extermination)

Scarlet Bridge doesn’t seem like a particularly bad spot. Fairly well illuminated, some guards around here and there, but overall it’s a very ample space with access to many alleys. The houses around here are tightly locked, and all shops are closed, without exception. The people around here seem to know something the guards don’t. Your party spreads, assuming hidden positions while still mounted. Maria casually strolls past the bridge alone, and after she disappears on a corner ahead, a single woman can be seen looking in that direction, exiting a small house and rushing towards a rundown shop across the street.

“Why are you running? This place doesn’t look dangerous.”

You say to yourself. Your group goes around the block to meet Maria on the other side of the bridge, and together you leave your horses at the nearest guard garrison. Some guards close the bridge at your command, and others the street on the other side of it. If something happens, whatever runs out of that alley will meet bullets and spearheads. Your party approaches the alley and you peek at it, slowly moving your head out the corner.

A group of people is leaving the rundown building, while others enter. They all seem to be carrying something. You saw at least one child among them.

“Definitely an atelier.” Maria whispers next to you. “How did the guards not spot it?”

“There are no incidents here, and the guards are not trained to fight heretics, so they don’t actually look for them. It’s easy not to see what you’re trying not to see.”

“I’m having a conversation with them after we’re done.” She sounds genuinely disappointed at the city guard. You’re not. The ones in the capital are even worse.

“Suit yourself. Lead a group to intercept those people from the other side of the alley.”

“By your command. And you, your Excellency?”

“They never expect anyone to go through the front door.”

Maria smiles with confidence and a bit of excitement at your challenging tone.

“Good luck, sir.”

You move quietly. One of the sentinels actually climbs to the roof of a neighboring shop to drop on top of what appears to be the front door guard. Maria’s group burn a small gunpowder rock, signaling with a flash the beginning of the operation. Everyone jumps at the people in front of the atelier at the same time, most are women, and offer little resistance.

>The guard was successfully restrained by one of the sentinels.
>Suspect number one was successfully restrained by you.
>Suspect number two was successfully restrained by one of the sentinels.
>Suspect number three was successfully restrained by Maria.
>One of the sentinels failed to restrain suspect number four, but she was secured by another sentinel right after.
> One of the sentinels failed to restrain suspect number four, but she was secured by another sentinel right after.

You’re glad you chose to bring a larger force. Things went smoothly because you had many backups ready to support the vanguard. The suspects are not dangerous, you can tell at a glance. They’re clearly collaborators, but not practitioners of the dark arts with an affinity for the occult. Only one man is among them, and he doesn’t seem interested in fighting. They probably think their confessions will be enough to survive the inquisition. There are many collaborators who are forced to work for the heretics and manage to attain pardon from the church.

The guard, on the other hand, is very agitated and has marks on his arms and hands, probably self-inflicted. He may know Blood Magicks. Leaving him unconscious for interrogation would be useful, but perhaps he should be killed while you have the chance.

(You order…)

>[A] – The guard to be knocked unconscious. (he may die)
>[B] – The guard to be tied and left to the city guard. (he may escape)
>[C] – The guard to be tied and left under sentinel supervision. (you’ll lose one sentinel)
