The sun was starting to set on the day. And still Mei had not come. It was definitely past 6 O’Clock. After the initial skirmishes, Mei had decided to not engage. And because there technically is no time limit to Tankery, that means this match could go on for a while. You lean on the back of the turret hatch, scoping out the woods. No movement yet so far. You really only claimed one tank today, but that was it. She still outnumbers you. And she has experience on her side. But yet she can’t quite get the connection she wants. That’s fine, that suits you. That means you can spend time digging in and waiting for her to take the first action. Not every battle has to be decided by the party that strikes first after all.

Though… You look back to see Winona, Ingrid, Josephina, and Stack playing cards. Not every battle has to be won by the most vigilant party either you guess.

“Anybody see anything?” asks Griselda.

“Negative,” Iris remarks.

“Nope,” you say.

Griselda says, “Call out if you do.” That was the same thing about an hour ago. Nobody has called anything out. If you’re really unlucky, Mei is waiting until nightfall. Unfortunately, not everyone here has nightfighting experience. Not even you. You look up at the sky. And worse, it looks like it’s going to rain soon. That’ll drop visibility immensely.

You’ll just have to work with what you get.

You jump off the tank and look around. The girls have taken what time they have to gather logs and any pieces of fallen wood to shore up their hull-down positions. Your Comet in particular was dug in enough that only the top of the hull and the turret were sticking out from beneath a hole of wood, leaves, and camo netting. Stack certainly works quick with that stuff you have to say. As for everyone else, they were all dug in in much the same way. You could see Griselda near the top of the hill standing up on the turret and scouting with her binoculars. Duchess and her crew have…

What in the hell? You walk on over to their tank. It’s quite a distance but you have to make sure you’re seeing what you’re seeing. “Uh, girls.” You find the five of them covered and caked in mud, splattering the Easy Eight in mud and leaves as well. “What are you doing?”

“Camouflage,” says Duchess. “They won’t be able to spot us like this.”

“Okay, I see the reasoning,” you say. “But you don’t need to cover yourselves in mud too.” They all look at you, confused. They then proceed to keep splattering themselves with mud all over their clothes and faces. Is this just an excuse to play in the mud? “… right. Um, Duchess.” Duchess looks to you, attentive. “Have you see anything out there?”

“Not yet,” she says. “I reckon though they’re gonna try for a night attack. They’ll have the rain and cover of night to their advantage.” That’s what you thought too. “Which is why I think we shouldn’t be digging in.”

“Eh?” You tilt your head. “Why’s that?”

“Think about it. Heavy rain means the ground is gonna get soft,” Duchess remarks. “They’re going to be mobile, we’re going to be stuck in these foxholes trying to get out. You ever try to move a tank up a muddy slope from a cold start? It’s not fun.” That-… that’s actually a decent observation. If Mei does attack you during the rain, all of you are probably going to suffer from movement penalties due to the mud. She could probably pick you apart at her leisure.

Try your hand at camoflaging your tank, you don't need to go...as all out as Duchess and the survival club go, but it couldn't hurt to be invisible in the night.
>>
Wait, I'm confused I can understand our side but wouldn't the Comets suffer from trying to climb up a muddy hill and since we are camouflaged they will have a hard time to see us?

Frankly it seems that this gives us more of the advantage then Mei's. The mud effectively ruins one of her team's best qualities, Mobility.
>>
>>2116490
>> “Bring it up with Griselda. That’s a good observation.”
We can bring it up but the explanation seems a bit lacking.
>>
>>2116528
Well first of all, they're Centurions (Although whether they're better on muddy conditions, I'll leave to someone else).

Secondly, yes, we are hard to see but so are they. The key thing is that once we give away our position firing, they know where we are as it's hard for us to move around. While they can fall back and then come in another way. At which point they know (roughly) where we are but we don't have a clue till they fire the first shot.
>>
>>2116528
This is somewhat contingent on Mei planning a direct charge of our forces, we don't explicitly know where they are, so while, yes, they could be delayed in climbing up, allowing us a decent firing range. If they have moved to a position that catches us by surprise and we're still bunkered, well we've just created a muddy murderhole for them to shoot into. I think there is some room for flexibility where we can potentially escape should this get real bad.
>>
>>2116549
>>2116528
I'd just like to add I'm not voting either way. A heavily fortified position could offset any mobility disadvantages it carries with it. I think both choices have equal pros and cons so I'm not too bothered.

There are possible 'sneaky' strategies with the defensive option but I'd rather not get into those too much. (Not firing until they pass by us because our rear is shooting them etc etc. for example).
>>
> “Bring it up with Griselda. That’s a good observation.”

“You should bring that up with Griselda, Duchess. It’s a good observation.” If you find them and fire the first shot, you’ll be stuck in one place. But they’ll be free to move back and come in a different way. That’s one of the cons of defensive positions. You suppose you should thank your lucky stars they didn’t bring artillery. Perhaps Mei thinks it’s some kind of overrated class of tank to use in times like these.

Duchess pumps her fist. “Alright! Thanks, Ellie!” With that, she immediately leaps to the ground and splatters some more mud onto herself.

… right.

You walk back to your tank, quickly scoping out the horizon once more. Still nothing. You suppose Mei is probably waiting for the rain and cover of the night to actually move. During the day, obvious signs like dustclouds, trees moving and leaves rustling, and animals escaping away will be obvious signs of attack. But something as simple as rain will obscure that. And night will definitely add to that as well. A crafty move, but, you won’t let that stop you or your team.

Winona sighs, leaning on the turret. “When are they going to come?”

Stack says, “Theory’s at night, Winona. Which means we’re going to be here a while.”

“I don’t see why we have to wait,” Ingrid states. “Or why we don’t have time limits for this sort of thing.”

Stack coughs, looking at Ingrid incredulously. “This is coming from the girl who gushes over baseball games that go into extra innings?” Ingrid rolls her eyes, looking back at her cards. The silence definitely says that she accepts that remark.

“You guys see anything out there?” you ask.

“Not a thing,” Winona states.

“Let’s scrap some of these defenses for now,” you say. The girls all look at you in surprise. “We got the rain coming, we’re going to sink in the mud.”

“Aw…” Stack pouts heavily. “But I just set everything up.”

“Sorry, Stack. Come on, we’ll all pitch in.” Lacking anything better to do right now, the entire crew decides to join in on deconstructing some of the defenses. You’ll leave up the logs covering the Comet’s front and the camo netting, but everything will get shoved to the side for now. For extra mobility, you’ve asked Stack and Josephina to dig ditches to stick logs in underneath the Comet’s treads. That way when the rain comes and turns the place into a quagmire, you’ll at least have some traction.

This takes a while though. And eventually the sunset turns into outright night. Per night battle tactics, Griselda has briefed everyone. “The first person I see with a light on is going to get it.” Considering nobody knew what –it- was, there was debate over whether they should fire illumination flares into the night occasionally. Finally, Griselda again clarified it like this. “Don’t put any lights on, or they’ll see us, and they’ll murder us.” That got everyone’s attention quickly, and thus the five of you toiled into the night with no light.

“Ow!” Winona jumps up a bit, holding her foot. “Knocked my foot against the tread! Owww… I knew I should’ve gotten a steel toe!”

Stack wipes her forehead, breathing heavily. You can’t see much in the moonlight, because with all the clouds there is no moonlight. Your eyes have adjusted only slightly to the darkness, allowing you to see the general shape of everyone and everything. The only thing you can really count on now is the internal lights in the tank. You feel a drop of water on your shoulder, then more on your nose. Rain. “Everyone into the tank!” you call. You all hurry to mount up.

You shut the hatch to keep the water out, and now starts the long wait. You can hear the rustle of an MRE package being opened up. You look down to see Winona munching on some crackers and putting a spaghetti course in a heat pack to cook for a little bit. She looks up at you. “… what? I’m hungry.” She gasps. “Oh no… Cuddles!”

“Didn’t you leave Cuddles with Abi?” asks Stack.

“I did!” says Winona. “But I forgot to tell Abi to only feed Cuddles frozen mice! He’s delicate! Live mice will kill him!”

“You’ve been sending Cuddles to Abi for months now,” Ingrid says. “I think he’s fine.”

“Cut the chatter. Ears open.” The rain starts getting worse and worse until finally it’s nothing but a dense fog of black and mist through your viewports. The pattering and drumming of water echoes through the tank as everyone waits anxiously for the first strike.

“Anybody see anything?” asks Suvorov over the radio.

“Negative,” Griselda states. “Duchess, what’s your status?”

“We’re ready to move if things get dicey,” Duchess states.

Jane Fogerty says, “Anybody want rain music?”

You see a flash of lightning, briefly illuminating the woods for a second and almost blinding you from the light. Then the loud sound of thunder. Everyone flinches. Winona grabs your legs. “It’s okay, it’s just thunder!” you say. Everyone relaxes. Winona however still hangs onto your legs. “… Winona, please let go of my legs.”

Winona presses her cheek into your thigh. “But they’re so soft.”

“Now.” Winona quickly goes back to her seat. Soft your butt… you open the hatch up and are immediately doused in rainwater. You grab your binoculars and wipe the lenses, then quickly look around.

Still no movement. At least none that you can see. Another flash of lightning and a bang of thunder.

Wait.

Thunder doesn’t-

Then a shell ricochets off your turret side and explodes against a tree. You almost jump out of your seat. “What was that!?” shrieks Ingrid. You hold on. Where did that come from!? You look around again. Then the crack of thunder once more. “Was that a shell!?”

“It was!” you say. “Griselda, did you see where that came from?”

“No! I didn’t!” You look down at your tank. It hit the left turret side. Shallow angle. It most have come from the west somewhere.

> Hold fire. They’re probing.

“Hold fire,” you say. “It’s coming from the west. They’re just probing.” You have to admit, that was a pretty luck shot. A little bit to the side and it would’ve completely destroyed your gun at best. Everyone braces themselves for the next couple of shots.

Lightning strikes. Another shot explodes in the line. They know where you are roughly. But they’re waiting for an obvious indicator of where you are exactly. A muzzle flash. A turret rotating in the lightning flash. Thunder cracks now. You can’t really see any smoke clouds from the gunfire in the distance. All you can hope for is that you catch a muzzle flash somewhere.

Griselda says, “Steady now.” Everyone is quiet. The next shot could hit someone. You just have to be careful. You take a breath, letting the rain run down your face as you scout things out with your binoculars. Where are they?

Another flash of lightning. Wait, there! Was that a muzzleflash? The shot strikes a tree, shattering it to pieces. Right. That had to have been a muzzleflash. Thunder strikes again once more as you look out that way. It’s still darkness and all. But that had to have a muzzleflash, you’re sure of it. “Did you see them?” asks Griselda.

“I think I may have,” you say. “To the west.”

“Alright,” says Griselda. “Elodie. I think we have to start repositioning. If we fire back, they’ll know where we are and we won’t be able to duck away or fire back effectively at them at this rate.”

The time for moving was before Mei got here, now we'd just be letting them pick us off even more easily. What we need is a sheet of metal, or something reflective, doesn't have to be big, ask one of the unegaged crews to bring it up for us.Then stick it in the dirt behind us to the South East and shine the spotlight on it. When ZES fires at it thinking its our light, we engage the muzzle flashes.

Hm. If she’s waiting for return fire back, then what might happen then is if she sees anything indicating a location, she’ll have it lit up like crazy. Perfect. “I need something shiny or reflective. Up here now.”

After a few probing shots and probably an hour’s worth of lightning, you get your response from Hadley and company. You can definitely see something being set up to the South East just as you wanted. You had it planned out exactly. They’ll stick something shiny and reflective to the southeast. You’ll take the tank’s spotlamp and shine on it. When ZES fires, you’ll engage the muzzle flashes. And what Hadley and company found was…

The hood from a McLaren P1 that someone left lying on the field. “Ha, they didn’t think it’d be a valid target just sitting in their garage! But we found it!” they say. They lay it to rest against a tree, then bug out back to their tank. You rotate the spot lamp around, then shine the light on it. The hood’s reflection immediately shines brightly all around.

And after a few seconds, it’s immediately lit up by dozens of shots and shells. “Now, engage, engage!” You take a look. Five or six flashes. All of your tanks fire on the muzzle flashes that appeared to the west. You fire off an APCR shell at the closest muzzle flash.

You can’t see however if there were any direct hits. Lots of explosions but no hits.

“You guys see anything!?” you yell.

“No!” says Suvorov. “Nothing-“ A shot screams past you! You flinch, ducking down. Son of a bitch! You look forward. The shots in the distance continue. They seem to be splitting apart and separating though! They think they know where you are now!

We have an opening while they're repositioning to make our own moves. Pull everyone except us and the Chaffees back, closer in to Nisson, and try to be sneaky about it. Meanwhile, we're going to have to do something horrible: Vandalise our uniforms to fashion some ramshackle eyepatches for at least Jose, us and Nona. Tell the other Chaffee crews to do the same, then position to new spots at the North and South ends of the ridge and disguise our positions as well as possible, Chafees South, us North, leaving the centre open.

Sooner or later Mei will realise we've abandoned the ridge and move to take it, because it's just too good of a position not to, even if she suspects an ambush. When she does, we shall spring the next phase of our plan into action.

>>2117370
That's not going to work anon, especially not wasting our APDS to do it, if you wanted to churn things up you'd use HE, but even that's unlikely to do much considering the stellar offroad performance of the Centurion.

“Alright, let’s have everyone but us relocate. I have a devious plan in mind!”

“Devious!?” yells Stack.

“Devious!?” Ingrid shouts.

“Elodie’s got a devious plan!” Winona hollers.

“Would you lot shut up! Just listen up!” You explain the plan as clearly as you can over the radio. It takes a bit of convincing from Griselda and the rest of the team, but you manage it. Now what you’re doing is having everyone pull back. Meanwhile, you have to get drastic with your wardrobe. You tear the sleeve off from your blouse then wrap it around one eye. Everyone does these, even the people in the Chaffees do it as well. For now, the relocation begins. Everyone pulls back closer to Nisson. You and the Chaffees pull back to opposite ends of the ridge. You take the occasional shell exploding all around you. But it doesn’t appear that they know exactly where you are.

Finally have, you’ve managed it. You start piling leaves and other debris onto your tank to hide yourselves.

Now all you have to do is wait.

You hear the rumbling. They’re coming. “They’re coming,” you whisper. “Stay sharp!” Winona nods, putting her good eye to the sights. They’re advancing up slowly, quietly, their silhouettes broken up by sticks and leaves attached to their hulls. Has to be at least nine or ten of them, half the team! You have half their team moving up now!

Alright…

Just need a good moment. Mei probably does suspect that this is a trap. But maybe she thinks she can end this with sheer experience and willpower. You might take a lot of losses here, but you can at least do enough damage to make her think twice about this.

Once they reach the steepest part of the incline, where their manoeuvring is most constrained, light them up (first shell, then flares, then more shells). We want to use white burning starlight flares, have the Chaffees have flares fire them too, also have the forces that fell back launch whatever flares they have over this way. Most importantly, fire all of them at low angles, so they fall to ground quickly, giving only a brief window of very bright light over the area.

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

You feel the sweat forming in your hands as you hold on and watch through the periscope. Wait for it… They start crossing in front of you.

“Alright, now!” Your gun fires an APCR shot right through the flank of one of them. This starts a chain reaction of everyone else firing shells as well. Some miss, but some like yours find their mark.

“We did it! We got a kill!” yells Elyse. “Nice work, everybody!” The Centurions start firing flares out to try and mark your positions. Fair enough, they want a light show, you’ll give them one.

“Great, Elyse! Now get some flares out there!” you yell. Everyone starts dropping flares left and right, firing them off into the air. Stack fires a flare out the hatch into the air. You watch as the Centurions start dithering around as you fire another APCR shot out there. Unfortunately, this shot deflects off the lead tank. It starts to point towards you. Shit, is that Mei!? You look through binoculars, and find her standing outside of the hatch. It is her! “Fire!” Your last APCR shot, make it count! The shot fires out.

And it misses. Not because Mei moved forward or to the side.

She reversed downhill.
>>
>>2117896
[2/2]

Mei shouts into her radio as she ducks down into the hatch. The remaining Centurions immediately start reversing as well. The downhill slope and the muddy slippery terrain gives them an additional speedboost as they almost careen down the hill. Griselda and her team of tanks starts moving up to the crest of the hill to take potshots. You watch however as the Centurions start spinning as they move down. All of them in synchronized spins. They glide down the muddy terrain, beginning their own individual Shimada Death Blossoms.

> CO-OP MANEUVER: ???
> NO CHANCE

They start firing rapidly in every direction. “BRACE!” you shout. A shot explodes near a tree. More shots fly all around. It’d be one thing if this is just one tank, but it’s SIX in almost perfect fashion!

One shot connects with a Chaffee. “AH! FUCK THEY GOT US!” screams Lyra.

> KO: LYRA CALDWELL (M24 Chaffee)

> KO: DALIA EARNHARDT (M24 Chaffee)
> KILL CREDITED TO: JOSIE STILLWELL (Centurion Mk I) (ELITE)

They turn around to face forward again, immediately firing off a spread of flares into the air. Mei is coordinating them well. If you want to beat that group, Mei has to go!

Mei’s remaining six tanks have speeded back into the woods. Though you can still see their faint silhouettes against the burning flares, that won’t last long. You keep scoping and zooming in to see her around. She’s probably still yelling out orders to them. They fire another coordinated volley, shaking your lines and throwing your aim off. “Damn it! I can’t get shots off!” yells Winona.

“Speak for yourself!” Serina says, “At least you get to shoot things!”

Iris says, “We’re locking down an important flank. Let’s not argue.”

Griselda says, “We’ve got ‘em on the run! But don’t pursue! We just have to-“

“PROBLEM! PROBLEM!” yells Suvorov. “I see them moving down the north road into Nisson! I see nine tanks!” Nine!? That’s the other half of their team!

“I see them too!” says Griselda. “Me and Jane going to move down and reinforce! Hadley and Kathy will stay up on the ridge and cover us!”

Pursuing Mei, while a dream idea. Isn't wise yet. They want to split us up more. But Reinforcing at Nisson just gives up Hadley and Kathy for any of Mei's tricks, not to mention exposes our rear. I think we should help overwatch/cover as best we can.

>Hi-Ex barrage to muddy Mei's terrain
> Reinforce Nisson.

Mei has us outnumbered down there. We cannot let Mei revert back to her original plan. If we can bog her down in mud and support our own against her divided force, we can push this in our favor.

If we can get smoke down there after the Hi-Ex to make it harder for her, all the better for us.

Mei continues to be surprisingly, disappointingly timid, they had the chance to counter there and could probably have pushed through into a brawl, their ideal engagement, but again they falter. My only explanation for the way she's playing is that this isn't caution, it's fear. She's so scared of giving us an opening she's surrendering her chances to capitalise on any gains she makes.

Use the flares to keep the field illuminated, these ones going high for a long burn, resume defensive positions, now we can use the dead Chaffees for cover though.
>>
>>2119524

>>2119525
I'll add this guys barrage and then

>>2119532
Add Danon's flares
>>
>>2119525
The amount of mud the 77mm HV's HE could churn up would be nothing to Centurions, and if we go to Nisson, this flank will be wide open. Even if the ridge tanks that should be covering Gris join in, they won't be able to create significant terrain disruption to stop Centurions, which again, have excellent off-road characteristics. The HE barrage only risks giving away our position and getting us shot for no real gain.
>>
>>2119549
I was thinking everyone blast it on the way out but if it would accomplish nothing, then you're right.

Should we call everyone else back to our position and hold here again? Keep stalemating and stalling until something in ZES discipline cracks?
>>
>>2119549
But don't they already know our position? We could always play it off as a few fleeting shots as if we're going to pursue.

I'm in agreement that we should stay where we are, but I still think your underestimating the idea.

Admittedly, my tank knowledge is...well nothing. But still. I'd like to believe that the terrain isn't just an obstacle for us.
>>
>>2119566
Nah, Nisson's committed now, we have to have faith in Iris, Gris and the rest of our team to be able to do work and hold out, start to even out that kill count while Mei and her best players like Stillwell and Freya are up here.

Up here, we basically have to hold Mei alone, but the good news is, she's scared of us. She's backed off to lick her wounds, already buying us time, we just have to buy some more. Each time she advances we'll be waiting, and I still have the second half of my cunning plan up my sleeve.

>>2119569
A few stray shots they'd just drive around, and its not clear if they actually made our position during the assault, or just our general vicinity during the chaos. The amount of HE we'd have to pump into the dirt to actually disrupt any advance across the area would be ridiculous.

“Alright, stay where you are.” This isn’t what you expected from Mei. You should’ve seen a counter strike quickly, or some kind of attack to push the advantage they still have. Now again she’s stuck in a slugging match. Is she trying to draw you into an engagement? Or is she just scared of you? Whatever it is, you’re not falling or it. “Keep the flares up!” Stack nods, using the bomb launcher to fire another flare into the air. Kathy fires off a flare as well, firing a random shot in the direction of Mei. No such luck in a hit.

“It’s a bad moon rising out there cuz they just got us!” shouts Jane. “Sorry!”

Iris says, “We’re going to move over to support.” Okay, good. You have faith that Iris can at least turn the tide there. What she needs to do is at least buy time so you can eliminate Mei. If Mei goes, the team will likely collapse without her leadership. That’s the theory anyway.

However, you do realize something in all of this. With both the Chaffees dead on the north side, Griselda having gone back to Nisson, and the Jacksons on the east ridge that means-…

You’re completely alone. You look back and see ALL of the Centurions now advancing on you. They fire their salvo. “BRACE!” You grab on. The shots scream past your tank. One of them shreds off a side skirt. Another explodes off the edge of the turret, creating a neat gash. Everyone screams at the loud noise of it echoing through the tank. They keep advancing until suddenly the lead tank takes a shot through the front, disabled.

Okay, so in actuality, I'd love to do a Bermuda triangle, but I don't think Kathy and Carver are capable of it in unfamiliar tanks.

So to buy time and sweep up a few kills, I'm thinking we blind them, pick off the lead tank go for a charge and then ram it into others, and blind them again with a mudslinger and have Carver and Kathy try to pick off as many as we can while we return.

I'm sure this is probably a bad idea, and will inevitably wait for someone to come up with something better...

Wait, wait for them to close and the flare to drop. Use the smoke to skirt around to the side. Then when the light dies, pull off the eye patches and charge. The muddy terrain and downhill slope will become our weapon. and the momentary advantage in night vision we'll enjoy before ZES can get another flare up or recover their own will be all the opening we need.

First we use a Zumwalt Hook to get into the heart of the ZES formation in the darkness, gunning straight for Mei, however this won't be enough for her I don't think, and she'll counter the move in the Shimada way, by going for a ram to curtail us, which is when we execute a modified form of the Corner Hook, angling in our tank to 'bounce' our corner off her ramming attempt, spinning us and providing the necessary momentum to whirl us around and trigger the start of our Death Blossom in the centre of their formation, then pop smoke as we spin out, preventing effective return fire. The rain slicked, muddy terrain should also reduce the strain on the suspension from going this balls to the wall.

With a bit of luck, a bit of daring and a bit of skill we could put ourselves in a position where we only have to eliminate one more ZES tank to get our duel with Mei.

“Hold up now,” you say. “Wait for it.” The flares still float down as Mei and company get closer and closer. “Pop smoke!” Stack fires a smoke bomb out, spreading smoke around your tank. Once the flare dies on the ground, you signal it. “Full speed, Josephina!” The tank rumbles as it starts charging down the hill. Okay, you can do this, you can do this. You pop out of the hatch and pull your eye patch over the other eye. Night vision preserved, just like a pirate! You look out to see the five tanks advancing you on still. And in the back was Mei herself. They fire a coordinated volley at Kathy and Hadley on the ridge. None of their shots hit, but it forces them to back away. They then turn their turrets on you.

Okay. Please let this work.

“Now!”

The tank starts going into a slide, turning to the left but still maintaining forward momentum. Like the match at Hugo Gernsback, you’re sliding a long ways away. You slip past the initial rabble and find Mei speeding towards you. She fires a shot. You duck away as the shot bounces off the top of your turret. Whoa, little close there! You hold onto the hatch for dear life. She speeds her tank up. Here we go!

Your corner bounces off your front, spinning you around. “NOW! NOW!” you shout. Stack and Winona go double time. Shots rapidly explode out of your gun as you go into a death spiral, putting shots here and there into ZES Centurions.

Looks like you have yourself a stand off.

There's no running from this, but going too hard will be also be ill-advised. Use suppressive burst to pin her in place, then a Zumwalt Hook made at longer range than normal not as a killing blow, but as a way of manoeuvring around her, keeping her between us as Stillwell to stop her immobile tank from helping Mei. Keep our eyes peeled for counters or a tactical manoeuvre of Mei's own with Intuition and be ready for a long duel, we got the first blow in, now comes the footwork, feinting, probing and parrying.

inb4 we drag this out until it's just us,
Gris and Iris left and we Bermuda triangle Mei for the win. (don't ask how you drift a Churchill)

I mean, even excluding that we've got the flag match tomorrow. Whatever the result of today's fight, I think it will end up merely a slightly anti-climactic prelude to the duel tomorrow when ZumZum and Mei are both flag tanks and the rest of the teams kill each other while it buckets rain all day, making for a second showdown to decide who is truly the master of the Shimada Ryu. Possibly with surprise last minute tutoring before the match from Arisu or even better, Chiyo, and the team discovering we weren't insane/lying when we said we had a little tankery Yoda.

“Three rounds rapid, let’s go!” Stack readies shells. You fire a burst of three rounds at Mei, who starts slipping and sliding around the place as you move forward. “Alright! Go, now!” You start speeding up for another one of your patented hooks around Mei. A longer one so that you can keep her between you and Stillwell. The tank flies around her left, then starts gliding around on the mud. Mei however appears to see what you’re doing. She reverses backwards, then pivots around in a J-turn almost. She fires a shot at the corner of your tank. The impact spins you out and makes you crash into a tree. “Ah! Son of a- everyone okay!?”

“Yep!” everyone calls out.

You quickly move out before another shot lands in your engine block. Just in time, a shot lands right where your engine was in fact. Mei pops out of the hatch with a flare gun of her own. Is she intending to put light down on the area so she can see? You quickly hurry to move your eyepatch to your other eye. Wait. No, you’ve seen this before at the J. Walter Christie match.

She’s going shoot it right at you! Everyone close your eyes! You shut your eyes. You hear a loud pop. The brightness is so intense you can see white even through your eyelids. You look away and find that the shell has landed right on your tank, smoke and sparks shooting out on the hull. That’s dangerous, Mei! Someone could get hurt! The next shot zooms across your barrel. Okay, maybe she’s past that point. Fine! If she doesn’t want to play fair, neither will you! “Attack! Fire!” Another shot zooms across Mei’s side. “Dang it, Winona! Hit her!”

“I’m trying, she’s a slippery one!”

Mei’s tank fires at you again. This time the shot scratches across the other side of your hull, ripping those skirts off. Shit! She starts charging at you once more. You brace for a ram. However, she pulls to the side, her tracks spinning in the mud and splattering mud all over you. “AH! FUCK!” you shout. You pull mud out of your eyes quickly. Come on! That’s filthy! Who knows what’s in this stuff!

The two of you are now even again, the flare still lit up on your tank.

Stay on her, we can't get away now even if we wanted to really. Turn on the Spotlamp and hit her with a smoke shell, then rush forwards into a drift around her, placing ourselves directly between her and Stillwell. Have Stack prep a HE round, set the time fuze to five seconds, then wack it with a hammer or something heavy to arm it while Nona lays the gun. Load and when there's just a bare second left on the timer, turn in and fire it in her general direction. It's probably very dangerous, but our gunner and loader are both Elite, and the shell should airburst point blank in front of Mei's tank, dispersing the smoke but also almost certainly stunning or disorienting the crew giving us precious time so that by the time they lay their gun, we're just about to cross in front of Stillwell we slam on the brakes with Stutterstep, and between the spotlight, HE blast, either Josie hits Mei or Mei hits Josie. Also after the HE goes off we should pop the top and light up Josie with the M2, while Nona hits Mei with the coax.

“Stack, we’re going to do something really stupid in a second, follow my lead!” You turn on the spotlamp and shine it on Mei. Stack loads in a smoke shell and fires. The shot douses Mei in a cloud of obscuring smoke. Your tank goes rushing around, gliding around to put Mei between you and Stillwell. Right. This is going to work once and ONLY once. Stack grabs an HE shell for you. You quickly set the time fuze, then grab a hammer.

“What the hell are you doing!?” yells Stack. You whack the shell quickly. Come on, come on. Mei fires a random shot to disperse some of the smoke around her. OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT. You load the round in.

“Now! Fire!” The round shoots out of the barrel and explodes right in front of Mei’s tank, dispersing the cloud of smoke. Their tank pulls back a little. Your tank continues on as you try to assess their damage. Right, right! You got her now! You keep on spinning around Mei until you start coming across Stillwell’s tank. Her turret starts rotating around. Right… “Now! Stop!” You hold on. The tank slides to a dead stop. The flare flies off the front and lands in the ground, dousing itself on the wet ground. The shot immediately screams past your hull and explodes past Mei. Shit! You were hoping that would’ve hit Mei! You quickly turn out and head to arm up the .50. Come on, come on, come on! You grab the trigger and fire on Mei, sending tracers ricocheting all over the place.

Mei for her part, did not fire. She must’ve realized what you were trying to do spinning around her tank like that. You keep on driving around Mei. Right, maybe once more you could get it to work-

Mei reverses her tank right into your path. OH SHIT.

The impact nearly throws you out of the turret hatch. Everyone screams at the concussion and crunch of metal. The Comet’s barrel has been moved to the side near her turret back. And her own gun is hooked around your turret side. “Ahead!” She tries to accelerate forwards. You accelerate into her backside. Come on! If you get out, you’ll be light up! The two of you spin around uselessly, your guns too long to get a shot off. Mei stands in her turret hatch, watching you very intently as you shout more orders. “Come on! More power, Josie!”

“I am giving it all she can!” Josie says. Your treads spark and shoot embers off each other.

Alright, come on, come-
>>
>>2120290
[2/2]

An AP shell hits your tank through the turret. You’re thrown out of the turret and into the muddy ground. Ah, son of a bitch! You slide down the hill in the mud away from the fight. A loud ringing in your ears is only what you can hear now. You look up to see smoke rising from Oliver’s turret. No, no, no. You pull yourself out of the mud, trying your best to slog your way through. Come on! Mei pulls her tank out of there. No, no! Not like this! Stillwell must have found a shot! Please, not like this! God, you’ll be a good girl, just don’t-

She fires.

You fall down to your knees.

Fuck.

Mei’s tank rolls away, damaged but not done. You can certainly see smoke rising out of her engine. Maybe the stress of that lockup has thrown it out of whack hopefully but…

… She just leaves like that?

Stack, Josephina, Ingrid, and Winona bail out. “Oh man…” Winona rubs her face a little. “They got us good.”

“Mei was counting on Stillwell to stun us,” says Stack. “That was-“ She looks to you. “Oh my God! Ellie!” Everyone drops off the tank, realizing you fell out of the tank with that one shell. They run on over to you. “Ellie, are you okay!?”

“Talk to me!” Winona falls to her knees, sliding next to you, covering herself in mud too.

You sigh, shaking your head. “I’m fine, girls.” You wipe some mud off your face, splattering it onto the ground. You move to stand up. Winona and Stack hurry to help you, but you wave them off. “I’m more concerned about you guys. And the tank. “I mean, that stuff looks like a lot of damage. Poor Oliver’s gonna need time in the shop after that. And plus… plus, we still have our flag match tomorrow.” You chew on your lip, walking up to the tank and placing your hands on him. Of all the times to fail you, he chooses now.

Winona leans by your side. “Ellie? Are you okay?”

“I just told you…” You gently pat your helmet, nodding to her. “I’m fine. If I wasn’t, the Judges would’ve called it for sure.” You take a breath. “But… yeah.” Mei just abandoned you here. No parting words. No final taunt. Not even to make sure you were alright.

You were silent on the truck ride back to the camps. By now it was the morning of Sunday. You would maybe only get a couple of hours of sleep. And by then… well, who knows what could happen tomorrow. Your gait was slow. Even though you try to put on a brave face for everyone, it was clear, both to them and to you that this loss hurt. It wasn’t enough Mei had to beat you, Mei beat the entire team.

Winona says, “If you need to talk to us, we’ll be there, okay?” Stack nods as well, concern in her eyes. Ingrid and Josephina too give you pats on the arm and the shoulder. And with that, you allow your crew to head to their tents.

You find Griselda standing outside hers, an umbrella over her head as she talks with Iris. They look to you. “Ellie.” Griselda looks to you, seeing the absolute horrific state you’re in.

Iris asks you, “Are you okay?” You nod.

Griselda presses her lips together, then says, “You know, this loss wasn’t all that bad. We’re still guaranteed a spot in the postseason.” You nod again, folding your arms, your uniform still splattered with mud. “… Ellie. You did amazing out there. Trust me.”

On the contrary. I think she is less than thrilled it took so much. If the conditions were slighly different, the result would be..no, can't talm about that.

>>
>>2120429
> “We’ll get them tomorrow.”
Or today, whatever.
>>
>>2120478
Better tanks our team was unfamiliar with. To be fair.
>>
>>2120493
perhaps but some of them used these types before like Harder used a Jackson.

However, once again Griselda didn't do much as a tank fighter. I'm starting to think she's more like a desk job commander then a field one.
>>
>>2120478
Perhaps. But better tanks is nothing given that they are also foreign tanks to us. We had 5 tanks we can actually call our own. With any luck, we will have almost all of them. There is something to be said about "mom's home cooking"

I think you might underestimate Mei's own shaken nerves. This was victory. But I don't think its a victory she wants.

She looks like a robot. But she is probably one of the most passionate tankers we've faced. Like, punching bag and screaming pillow level passionate.
>>
>>2120496
She's done her fair share anon. Its just that we tend to...well, lets face it, look more impressive/override tactics.

But she's fine. Besides, with a depressed Zumwalt, she'll be coming into her own for us.

But hey, I am always anti-dunking on Gris-Gris. I am biased.
>>
>>2120497
Perhaps but i think she realized just passion won't do jack shit.

She saw us with even worse tank beat her centurions in the All star match. She wanted to squash use entirely and quickly which was the more efficient and correct choice, considering Iris mopped up her team leaving only Mei and Josie (who only survived due to her mobility kill)

She one hands down and proved herself to be better because of the choices made by her. Though whether she's happy about them is up to her.

But imo even if we were unfamiliar, the terrain was to our advantage and several factors were on our side.
>>
>>2120515
Since when? On the battlefield i mean.

IIRC she's been either mediocre or unimpressive as the BIG THREE.

Not saying she doesn't contribute but it seems more in the logistics factor then actual combat since it seems she seemed rather lacking.

But then again, i have been annoyed at Gris for a long time now and several of the past matches have not been showing her in much of a standout light. The last one was against the french team.

You take a breath, then nod to her. Try and say it calmly. “We’ll get them tomorrow.” Griselda nods at that. It’s like a pit’s formed in your stomach. It’s hard to swallow a loss like this. You almost had her. You could’ve had her. You should’ve had her. It felt like being robbed. But no, you can’t be too mad about it. It’s just a game after all. Griselda quickly hugs you, risking getting some dried mud on her clothes. Iris as well hugs you too.

“Today, technically,” Iris remarks. You smirk a bit, looking to her. Griselda smiles once she sees that.

“I just got word from Oleg,” she says. “We should have all of our original tanks tomorrow.” That’s good. Some familiarity might even the odds a little. “Elodie. Listen up though. You may not like this.” Hm? “Tomorrow, you’re going to be the flag tank. And tomorrow, Mei will be too.” Oh. Ain’t that convenient. “I don’t want you getting into anything dangerous, so please try not to be reckless.”

“Don’t worry, you can rely on me,” you say. You hear the sound of a jeep incoming. That better not be Mei. You, Griselda, and Iris look on over.

It’s Josie Stillwell, alone. She drives up into your encampment to the three of you. “Griselda, Ellie, Iris.” She leans back in her driver’s seat. “Just wanted to check in on all of you. You especially, Ellie. I heard you took quite the spill.” You shrug a little, looking down. “I’m doing this because I know Mei won’t.” She offers her hand. “Good match. We’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”

Which, keep in mind. Was the last match before this one. Time has just played tricks on us.

I am sure DAnon has a kill list to proove some contribution from her.

I dunno, I just think you're asking her to the same lofty expectations that her sister has.

Maybe but i think it leaves a bad taste in my mouth before when Eli was considered the wallflower of the big three when Griselda's showing was relatively worse then Eli.

IDK, its just feel likes this isn't the first time, Gris Jobbed and Iris doing a kill spree and while its the norm for our teammates, I feel its becoming a gag, a useful gag but a gag nonetheless.

Idk, if she had done a mobility kill or something before getting shot, I may be less critical but being the first in the line to be shot down feels a bit weak.

I'm getting vibes like Tenshinhan from Dragon Ball Super. (If anyone gets that reference)

> Shake her hand.
The mercs continue to be good people. This is weird.

A jobs a job. And it costs nothing to be polite.
>>
>>2120568
Mei seems to be the only one with a problem. Plus it's kind of personal with Ellie.
>>
>>2120601
Yeeeeeeep. And its funny. Its not even personal as in Ellie vs Mei. Poor Ellie is a proxxy. Unless sge really does resent the economic disparity and being marked a "chosen one"
>>
> Shake her hand.

You reach out and shake her hand firmly. Part of you want to strangle it, but you’re not feeling petty today. You’ll just be stern, mature, and brief about it. “Thank you.” You part hands. Josie shakes hands with Griselda and Iris as well, smiling politely to the three of you.

Griselda says, “I’m curious. How did Mei take winning today?”

“Oh no. I’m not brave enough for gossip,” says Josie. “Especially not when Elodie is around here. All I can say is we’re prepared to meet you in the next match.” She gives a sharp salute to you all. “Later on then. And get some rest.” With that, she puts her jeep into gear and drives on and away. You never expected those mercenaries to actually be relatively decent people. Well, decent for the most part. You’d never sell out LGA for all the money in the world.

With that, Griselda decides to call it for the night. Iris as well. You all say your good nights and head on back to your tents.

Before you do however… You spot someone standing by your tent.

Arisu Shimada. She clutches a Boko Bear in her arms, looking at you. “Arisu.”

“Zumwalt-san.”

“You’re disappointed with me, aren’t you?” you ask.

Arisu walks up to you, then gently takes your hand squeezes it. “I am not disappointed. You did well under the circumstances.” You chew on the insides of your cheeks. Try not to cry in front of her, please. “I know tomorrow you will do better.” You nod. Thank you. Oh Christ. “I am sure today however has been humbling for you.”

You think she would like us more if we said it wasn't?

Well we're not really a Boko in any other respects so maybe not.

WE were always humble. It's more frustrating considering all the shit this week
>>

“I guess it has been,” you say. It’s been frustrating, it’s still hard to swallow. But it’s a bitter truth. There will be losses. Perfect games and perfect seasons are rarities, not the norm. “I knew going in we may lose, but to come this close and still lose it was… frustrating to say the least.”

Arisu nods. “I understand. I recall when I was facing Miho Nishizumi, it came down to her and her sister and just myself.” Oh yeah, you remember that. That was all over the news. Arisu says, “We all had things we wanted to protect. In the end, losing was… tough. But it worked out in the end regardless I suppose. Considering my mother spoils me.” You snort a little, giggling. “What?”

“Nothing.”

Arisu smiles a little. “You understand the sentiment?”

“Moms spoiling us? A little.”

Arisu nods to you. “I will see you in the morning, Zumwalt-san. Get rested.”

Winona pokes her head out of the tent. “Hey, Ellie, who are you talking to?”

You look to Winona. “I was-“ Arisu is already gone. DAMN IT. Ugh. “… forget it. Let’s head to sleep, Winona.” Winona smiles at you, pulling the tent flap open for you.

Need as many Zs as you can get before morning.

Good thread boss.

This match is going to be really tough to deal. My hope is that we can play into Mei's...Mei-ness...I mean, we are bait already.

Alright, pastebin is updated with the new kill and death counts. Iris is precisely one kill behind Elo, Gris is down to a flat 3:1 kill-death ratio and other than that our fan club's done well to keep their K/D and 1:1 so far, considering their freshness and the strength of the ZES team this bodes well for their potential I think, same goes for Lyra.

Holy SHIT Meryl.
>>
>>2120742
but only 24 kills, she only seems to be doing barely better then the regular crews.

She's the Tenshinhan of this Quest.
>>
>>2120748
Keep in mind. One other thing to consider. She only just got her girls back.

I dunno, anon. I dunno.

Guess I still have optimism and hope. Somehow.
>>
>>2120748
Its not all about kills. Especially with Elie and Iris murdering the fuck out of everything.
>>
>>2120785
And I pointed it, she seems more like a logistical commander then a actual fight/field commander.

I'm not saying she's bad (at least not in this case) but tank combat is not really her forte or at least mediocre.
