You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

After a few days, everything had finally been finalized and prepped. Amy's debut concert would be held at one of Nabaal's largest lagoon resorts, which would guarantee a lot of open space for a large crowd.

However, that also meant the area would be large and hard to lock down from a security standpoint. Despite having hundreds of NUNS and CDF personnel on hand to patrol the premises, you had no illusions about them being swamped when tens of thousands of spectators began flowing in.

Still, you've all done as much as you can, and everybody is busy making last minute adjustments.

Perhaps you should...

You head over to Amy's ready room. You knew the poor girl had a tough time dealing with crowds, so you should at least give her a bit of support before she had to go up on stage. You reach the door and knock on it firmly.

"Amy, it's me." You announce.

"G-get in here already!" Amy wails.

You hit the control and the door slides open. You were about to lecture Amy on keeping her door locked at all times when you see her sitting on a couch, hands clasped in front of her face which was furrowed with concentration.

"Two steps left, two steps right, one step back, spin, then the chorus hits..." She mumbles to herself.

"I see you're more diligent than I thought." You chuckle as you sit next to her. "Still going over the routine?"

"Because I don't wanna embarrass myself in front of god knows how many people!" Amy groans, burying her face in her hands. "If I screw up on stage, everybody will see it!"

"They don't know the routine, Amy." You grin as you pat her on the back. "As long as you look like you know what you're doing, nobody will be the wiser."

"I... I guess." Amy sighs. "I'm supposed to be up in less than half an hour and... and I'm not sure if I can do this."

"You can." You assure her.

"How are you so sure?" Amy asks, genuinely curious.

"Just a feeling I got. Just roll with it." You grin as you ruffle Amy's hair.

"Quit it!" Amy wails as she waves your hand off. "It took the hairdresser literal fucking HOURS to get my hair this way! He'd kill both of us if it got messed up!"

"Hah, sorry about that." You apologize.

"Anyways... what's so great about this 'feeling' of yours?" Amy asks skeptically.

"Hey, pilots live on gut feelings, and they usually tend to work out." You shrug.

"Usually."

"I don't claim to be perfect." You laugh. "But don't worry, I'm sure you'll be killing it out there."

"So... um..." Amy pauses and turns her eyes away from you, her body language suddenly becoming tense again. "Are... are you gonna be watching, too?"

Well, you were actually supposed to be making sure event security went smoothly. Karla already had enough things on her plate just trying to manage the event in general. Then again, that didn't mean you couldn't make a little detour...

"Of course I will." You nod as you stand up and hold your hand out to Amy. "Well, can't keep those fans waiting, right?"

"I guess so." Amy finally smiles as she takes your hand and lets you pull her up. "I'll be sure to dazzle 'em, and you, too!"

"Looking forward to it." You nod and smile back.

"Amy! You're up in ten!" Karla's voice buzzes over the intercom. "Head for the stage, please!"

"Yeah yeah, I'm heading there now." Amy sighs and turns to you one last time. "It's a promise, okay? Don't forget it!"

And with that, Amy exits the room, taking her first steps to her stage.

You turn around and head back into the hall. You had to make sure things were locked down on this end first. Most of the backstage areas were utilizing the existing resort facilities, and since it was a civilian building, it mean security was not high on the priorities when the place was designed.

Nevertheless, Karla had made sure to have guard details at all of the conceivable points of entry. But given how large the place was, that was pretty much all she could do.

You continue to listen in on the security channel, and so far, it looked as if the sentries were reporting in regularly. Nothing out of the ordinary. Then again, you should do some patrolling. Nothing like verifying the situation by using you own eyes to do it.

There were three major areas of concern that had your particular interest. First was the resort building itself. The staff areas that you were using were vast and mazelike. Lots of places to be able to potentially sneak in and hide, especially if you could disguise yourself as a staff member.

The lagoon was also a potential point of entry. There were drones and boat patrols watching the surface, but that didn't preclude the possibility of a diving team swimming their way in. This was a concern that nobody else in the organizing committee took too seriously.

And finally, there was the spectator stands. Packed with easily over ten thousand people, keeping track of each and every one of them was virtually impossible. It only had to take one bad actor to start a scene, and even worse, a panic...

You head out to the lagoon to do a quick patrol. Besides, it would be nice to get some fresh air that didn't involve getting stuck amid thousands of hot and sweaty concert goers.

With your sidearm at the ready, you trudge down the sandy beach on the lagoon shore. In the distance, you could see the bobbing flashlights of other foot patrols. Distant lanterns in the darkness. Just a few hundred meters over, you could see the dazzling multicolored lights of the stage, the sounds and beats of music thrumming. However, you, were too far to hear individual notes or lyrics.

Though, judging from the cheering, things seemed to be going well for Amy, at least. The crowd was totally into it.

Taking another breath of the fresh night air, you continue your patrol along the shore.

The hairs on the back of your neck prickle as your carefully honed pilot's danger sense kicks in. You turn around and crane your head up to see a rapidly flashing blue speck in the sky, and you realize what's coming. You sprint away from the shore and duck behind a beached rowboat.

Lara's Excalibur finally pulls out of its sharp diving, leaving the craft flying just a few bare meters above the water's surface, creating a curtain of water shooting up behind her from the sheer wake generated from her Excalibur's engines.

Meanwhile, the spotlights from the stage immediately swivel around and start tracking Lara, likewise drawing the crowd's attention to her as well. And that's when she does it.

She increases speed, pushing her Excalibur past the sound barrier. With a loud CRACK, the Excalibur rockets past the lagoon and over the crowd. A hurricane force of hot wind follows closely, hitting everything like a truck. A miniature tidal wave rises from the lagoon, giving the foot patrols a nasty surprise as they're splashed and soaked.

"YEEEEEEHAAAAAAAW!" Lara screams over the radio.

"Lara..." Karla tuts.

You knew enough that this low altitude pass was NOT part of the routine. It was quite obvious that Lara had gone off script again. You might have to rein her in.

Then again, given the loud cheering from the crowd, they seemed to be totally into it...

"Just let her do what she wants." You assure Karla. "She's good enough to know what she's doing."

"Hm, well, the crow does seem to be enjoying it." Karla concedes. "But if she crashes or roasts a civilian, she'll be paying the legal costs~."

"Haha, don't worry, I go this!" Lara laughs.

With that, Lara's Excalibur switches to GERWALK mode as it circles around the stage, moving in conjunction with the music. Looks like everyone was having a good time.

Suddenly, you're caught off guard when a pair of VF-171s, both painted black, scream over your head, both of them making a beeline straight for Lara. You knew immediately that this wasn't part of the act, either.

"Lara!" You yell in the radio.

"Y-yeah, I see them!" Lara says as she transforms her Excalibur back into fighter mode and begins to climb. "Shit, they're trying to get missile lock on me!"

"Can you lead them away from the concert?" Karla asks, her voice unnervingly calm.

"Yeah, of course!" Lara replies.

"Do it." Karla orders.

"Shouldn't we putting up the alert?" You ask, watching as the two VF-171s pursue Lara into the night sky. "Evacuate the concert?"

"And cause a panic? That's exactly what they want." Karla tuts. "And as far as the crowd knows, it's all part of the act, though now we won't have any more air support..."

"So the CLF really is acting." You grimace.

"Apparently so." Karla confirms. "I wouldn't worry about the civilians, though. The CLF isn't interested in slaughtering the people they're trying to win the support of, after all."

That was a cold, cold risk for her to take.

Damn, you run for the stage. You needed to get to Amy.

"Karla, we'll have to assume CDF security is compromised." You grunt in your radio.

"That's a distinct possibility." Karla agrees wistfully.

"How many more songs are in Amy's playlist?" You ask as you vault over a security barrier, panting hard as you break into a full sprint.

"There's still four more."

"Skip to the last one." You order. "Once it's done we're getting her out of here."

"Done." Karla replies. "It should be starting now."

"Hey everyone, thanks for coming out to my first concert!" Amy says as she waves to crowd. "It kinda sucks, but we're already on our last song, so let's sing it extra loud!"

There's a cheer from the crowd as the lights darken and the music starts. It was a vaguely familiar tune, actually.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1nP2vYO24k

At the same time, you see a knot of four rather suspicious looking men hanging around just offstage. They were dressed in resort staff uniforms, but you had the gut instinct that they didn't work here.

And your gut instincts were usually right.

For now, it looked as if they were waiting for the performance to end before making their move. You could possibly try to pick a fight with them and eliminate them before the song ended, but you didn't like your odds.

"Karla, I need backup on the stage." You growl.

"I'm routing some guards to you, but some of the teams aren't responding." Karla replies. "Looks like some of our details took some very inconvenient coffee breaks..."

You stare down the the four men as Amy's last song of the night begins to wind down. It was quite obvious they were here with ill intentions, and you were not about to let them have their way.

"Karla, get ready to kill the lights once the song's over."

"Roger that!" Karla says happily.

Finally, Amy hits the last note and stops in the middle of the stage, waving to the audience on last time.

"Thank you everyone!" She says happily.

And that's when the stage lights shut off, drowning the entire area in darkness.

Now was your time to act.

You don't waste any time. The four thugs weren't prepared for the power outage and were left stumbling in the dark while you dashed in, hooked your arm around Amy's waist, and physically hauled her off.

"W-what the fuck?!" Amy squealed, thankfully shutting off her mic before doing so.

"We're getting you out of here." You grunt as you dash away, keeping Amy in your arms since you figure things would be faster.

"We've got a motorcade ready to go to evacuate us back to the Kapisi." Karla informs you. "If you can get to the garage, we can get rolling."

Well, that was good, but then again, your Excalibur was parked right outside the stage area. If you could reach it, you could bypass potential ground traffic and get Amy directly back to the Pacifica...

However, as you run for your Excalibur, you're forced to slide to a halt as another black VF-171 in battroid mode lands in front of you, cutting off your path. The men behind you cut off any possible chance of retreat, as well.

"Hand over the girl and you won't get hurt." One of the men grunts.

"Hey, fuck you!" Amy scowls as she flips the men off.

Some of them gasp, as if they weren't expecting such a vulgar show of force from Amy.

"Yo Cap! Duck!" You hear Lara's voice buzz.

Just like that, you dive to the ground, using your body to shield Amy as the top torso of the VF-171 explodes. Lara's Excalibur emerges from the fireball in GERWALK mode, gunpod armed and aimed.

"I got your back, Cap!" Lara says as she lets her gunpod rip. Your pursuers disappear in a cloud of dust and smoke, either scattered or slain by Lara's timely intervention.

"Thanks Lara, I owe you one." You grin as you help Amy back up to her feet."

"You mean you owe me another one!" Lara corrects you.

You plop Amy down into the rear passenger seat of your Excalibur and hop into the pilot seat, booting up its systems. No time for a pre-flight checklist. You skip it and immediately power up the engines.

"Picking up more bogeys headed our way!" Lara warns you. "Four of 'em, this time!"

"Damnit, where the hell is our own air cover?" You grimace.

"Karla said the Kapisi is scrambling fighters, but they sure are taking their sweet time!" Lara explains. "Guess that's fine. More kills for us, you know?"

"What, in those piddly fucking Nightmares? Fat chance." Lara laughs.

"Race you to orbit, then." You grin.

"You're taking this kinda lightly, aren't you?" Amy stammers from behind.

"Amy, it's time for you to get a taste of the real thing." You chuckle as your hand settles on the throttle. "Better buckle in."

The VF-171s below you unleash a storm of missiles, but it's too late. You and Lara hit maximum afterburner, and your Excaliburs rocket upwards with blinding speed, going far past the minimum required speed to hit escape velocity.

Your missile warning system screams as it detects the locks, but you pay it no heed. You already know that you and Lara have already started in an advantageous enough position that there was no hope for those missiles ever catching up with you.

Still, that doesn't stop Amy from screaming. Whether it was the screaming siren or the G-forces from your acceleration, you weren't too sure. However, your Excalibur's built in inertial dampeners would make sure nothing too dangerous would happen.

Still, despite all your efforts, Lara manages to beat you, crossing over the threshold from Nabaal's atmosphere to the vacuum of space.

"Ha! Looks like the better pilot wins again, Cap!" Lara cackles.

"Yeah, well, you're just lucky I had some extra weight in my plane." You retort.

"Hey, are you implying something here?" Amy asks darkly.

"Not at all." You laugh nervously.

"Still..." Amy presses her hand against the cockpit glass. "This is actually pretty cool, flying in an honest to god Valkyrie..."

Despite this little race, you don't waste any more time and make a beeline straight back to the Pacifica. You wouldn't feel completely safe until you were back on a NUNS controlled ship.

You and Lara land without any issues. However, as you help Amy out of the cockpit, you see Dorothea storming towards you, very clearly unhappy. Looks like word of what happened on the ground had reached her.

"You three. Office. Now." Dorothea says sternly.

"Really?" Amy groans, slumping against your shoulder. "I'm so fucking beat."

"You'll just have to tough it out a bit longer, kid." You say as you support Amy.

You and Lara waste no time following Dorothea back to her office. You all wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, after all. You, Lara, and Amy take seats in front of Dorothea's desk. She sat there, hands clasped together as her eyes glared at all three of you.

"Now," She said, quietly but with barely restrained rage, "can any of you tell me what the BLOODY HELL happened down there?! It was supposed to be a simple concert, yet I'm getting reports of dogfights over the concert grounds!"

"Unknown parties engaged us first." You say simply, You knew Dorothea enough not to add in any embellishments. "It appeared that their objective was to seize Amy, we me and Lara evacuated her."

"Conveniently after the concert ended." Dorothea's glare focuses on you. "Don't assume I'm daft enough not to notice. You kept the whole thing under wraps while Valkyries were dogfightingg in the sky above ten thousand civilians."

"We didn't want to cause a panic." You reply. "If something like that happened, it would've been impossible to establish security measures."

"We?" Dorothea's eyes narrows. "You mean with Karla?"

"That's right." You nod.

"And who's idea could that have been?" She asks.

Lara and Amy were deathly quiet throughout all of this. But thankfully you knew the answer to this, too.

"It was Karla's idea." You admit. "But I went along with it. It seemed like the right call at the time."

"Bloody hell." Dorothea groans. "Lara, Amy, I presume neither of you were hurt?"

"No ma'am." Lara shakes her head.

"More like absolutely fucking tired." Amy grumbles. "And you screaming in my ear ain't helping things."

Dorothea eyes all three of you before finally taking a big sigh.

"The three of you are dismissed. But expect a more formal debriefing tomorrow."

"Sure thing, Admiral!" Lara nods.

"Finally, sleep..." Amy yawns.

You follow Dorothea's orders and quickly make your exit. Something seemed up with her, but you weren't about to stick around when she was still angry like this.

Amy yawns again.

"Jeez, is she really that tired?" Lara wonders.

"Kid had a big day today." You remind her. "She had to sing in front of thousands of people, after all."

"Hm, I suppose you're right." Lara nods.

"I can still hear you two losers." Amy sighs. "I just wanna sleeeeeep...."

You carefully scoop up Amy in your arms. This time, though, she doesn't protest at all. In fact, she practically falls asleep as you pick her up.

"Ohoho, you're really spoiling Amy, aren't you?" Lara chuckles.

"I'm just doing the kid a favor." You shrug. "She's worked hard today."

"Hnnnnn, well, I worked hard today toooooo." Lara points out.

"And?" You raise an eyebrow.

"How about ya carry me like that, too~?" Lara winks at you. "You still owe me one, right?"

"Sure thing." You grin as you finally reach Amy's room. It's a simple matter to override her door and get inside, where you carefully and gingerly set Amy down on her bed. She doesn't even rouse from her well earned slumber and you quietly slip out of the room.

However, Lara is giving you an expectant look. She couldn't possibly be thinking of getting carried now...?

"C'mon! Fashter! Fashter!" Lara giggles like a grade schooler as she rides on your shoulders, arms outstretched like wings on a plane. "It's like I'm fllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyinggggg!"

You're honestly not quite sure how the situation turned into this. Lara was completely smashed, while you were still rather sober. Maybe all of the excitement today had gotten to her, too.

"Giddyup, Cap!" Lara continues, "We goshta break the shound barrieeeeer~!"

You are extremely glad that nobody is around to see this when Lara starts trying to make plane engine noises.

Guess she really was a kid at heart, huh?

"ROLLING AROUND AT THE SHPEEED OF SHOOOUUUUUND..." Lara starts to sing badly at the top of her lungs.
