This is the Orient, the Continent of Asuwa. Named the Cradle of Civilization by Europan archeologists, it is the largest, most populous continent on the planet. While the various nations of Asuwa were richer in history and resources than that of their Europan counterparts, they unfortunately lagged behind them in technology. Many eventually fell to Europan colonization during the past century. Nevertheless, through the fires of cultural exchange emerged three powerful entities that dominated the continent.

To the Far East lies Zipang, Land of the Rising Sun. It was the first of the three major Assuwa nations to successfully modernize. Being an archipelago nation, it was only natural that it became renowned for shipbuilding and a powerful navy.

In the center of the continent was the Middle Empire, The Yu Dynasty. Boasting a massive reserve of ragnite, manpower, and an equally impressive armed force to protect these assets, there is no doubt that it is the most powerful nation on the continent. That is, if dynastical politics doesn’t end up eating itself first.

To the west lies a massive stretch of steppe grassland, an area where the Tengar Khaganate rules supreme. Originating from several tribes of steppe hoards, tribal warfare and life on the harsh steppes have created some of the hardiest and efficient soldiers.

The year is 1940 EC

Once again, Asuwa is engulfed in a fiery storm of conquest and destruction. Just a mere five years after the fall of the Yu Dynasty in the hands of the Tengar Khaganate, the flames have reached the shores of Zipang as well. Emboldened by its victory over the most powerful nation on the continent, the Khaganate unleashed its full continental might on the island nation.

With its Europan allies still recovering from the damage of their last devastating war, Zipang stood alone against the Khaganate, now with a bolstered armed force after absorbing the remnants of the Yu Dynasty. After two years of fighting, the war for hegemony over East Asuwa has entered its final stage.

Osaka, Asuwa’s Golden Crown. Such was the epithet given to the Zipang’s glittering merchant city capital. In more peaceful times, this city would be beating with nonstop life and commerce, much like the heart of a living animal. That was, of course, a long time ago.

Today, streets of Osaka’s outskirts were deathly silent. The sound of burning fires was all that remained. The rising smoke created a dirty, gray pall which hung over the ruins that once was the city. Most of the buildings were reduced to ash and rubble. Those that still stood were ravaged beyond recognition, their walls and roofs ripped by artillery. The wind had calmed, but a slight breeze was blowing westward, away from us. That's how, looking out the window, I suddenly thought I could hear the sound of gunfire again. And sure enough, there they were. Faint flashes of light illuminated the smog from a distance, signaling that the fighting has moved to the center of the capital.

A hand comes to my vision and pulls down the binds, smothering out the light within this so-called safe house.
“You aren’t thinking about going back to that slaughterhouse, are you?” A bespectacled man with sharp features suggests as he stands over me.

“That’s it, Subaru,” He offers to help me up. “We will avenge them one way or the other, but today we must endure.”
“Endure eh? How I wish more of us can remember this virtue. I’m pretty sure we’re going to be labeled as dishonorable cowards once all of this has settled, that is if we can make it out alive.”
“Cowardice, I simply prefer a battlefield where my odds at least even. This is clearly not is not the case.”
“Looks like you haven’t changed a bit, Satoru.” I comment with a sigh.

I am Subaru Kurokawa, son of Kagetora Kurokawa, Vice Admiral of the Combined Fleet. The glint of my dark-blue hair along with matching irises indicates my family’s rather shameful ancestry as a barbaric race known as Darcsens. That was history, however. This nation granted my ancestors and their brethren citizenship, equal treatment under the law, new names, and most importantly a superior, enlightened culture. For this, I am willing to do everything I can to save this nation.

His name is Satoru Aono, a long-time friend. While his Europan upbringing fostered a disapproving attitude towards the fervent self-sacrificial nature of his mother country’s culture, he nevertheless harbors zero intention of surrendering to the enemy.

“Subaru, Satoru!”
The two of us reared our heads to find a young engineer rushing down the stairs that lead to the rooftop. She stops abruptly in front of us, panting heavily and almost collapsing onto the floor.
“What is it, Yanagi?” Satoru asks, placing both hands on her shoulder.
“The steppe barbarians have begun razing this area, and there’s a squad approaching,” She replies, straightening herself up. “This place won’t be safe for much longer.”

This is Yanagi Morishima, heir to the Morishima Tsuushin, which in turn is the nation’s main manufacturer of telecommunication equipment, radio, and radars. Together, the three of us were inseparable since childhood. Likewise, the three of us were conscripted and hurled onto front lines at the last minute along with every other citizen of our generation, a testament to just how desperate the situation has become.

Opening the binds slightly, I made a space enough for all three of us to have a glance at the outside world again while remaining inconspicuous, this time looking at the opposite direction. A squadron of soldiers from the Khaganate escorting a utility halftrack was slowly but surely advancing in this direction, scavenging and clearing out the dilapidated buildings on their way.

“Couple of riflemen and shocktroopers,” Yanagi mutters, “and I also spotted a flamethrower.”
“About time we get moving then.” Satoru comments as he proceeds to sort out his gear.
With danger looming closer by the moment, I instinctively tightened my grip around my

Alright, so while my editor is taking time polishing the next update, I'll take this time to explain the mechanics.

It will be a standard d10, taking the best among one set.
As the commander of the Yamato, Subaru can issue orders to those under his command. The proficiency of these orders is directly related to his field experience. The more experienced he is in that particular field, the more complex orders he could issue. Field experience is accumulated depending on the readers’ approach regarding various situations.

Example: With 3 in navigator, rolls for navigation are set at 3d10 instead of the default 1d10.

Land combat classes will be the usual Scout/Shocktrooper/Sniper/Lancer/Grenadier
Warship control classes will be Navigator/Air Wing/Radar/Battle Chief/Mechanic

Nigga have you PLAYED the original also known as the best?
Scouts are basically all you fucking need 99% of the time (Lancers on certain missions, like one engineer, and a Shocktrooper or two to deal with dug in enemies), while Snipers kinda suck until you dump enough xp into them to make them good in the late game. And they still can't handle taking objectives for shit due to having garbage AP.
Snipers are cool, and Marina is easily Best Girl, but claiming they're all you need is pants-on-head retarded.

I held my trusted Tousaka Type-97 close to my chest. Unsure of the number of rounds left in it, I decided to empty the gun before reloading it. Three bolt draws later, the rifle was emptied.
Two unused rounds and the three left in my ammo pouch make five, just enough to fill the magazine.
Carefully, I began loading them into my rifle one by one.

“How much have we got?” I ask
“Carbine’s busted, on the last mag for this thing. Seven shots.” Satoru answers, and with a click finished reloading his pistol. The gun itself was clearly a state-of-the-art semiautomatic manufactured on foreign soil, but considering his father’s line of work, it’s not out of the ordinary for him to own such a thing.
“Last mag, but I still have four C3 and one can of smoke” Yanagi holds up all four explosives. “Out of Ragnaids, though.”
“And here’s five more rounds,” I said. Not quite the best day

We were desperately low on ammo, but the fact remains that the three of us need to move out as soon as possible, lest risking getting caught by the enemy. The destroyed urban warzone is an excellent place for the three of us to sneak around unnoticed, especially since their attention is currently unfocused. However, while it might be a big gamble, the halftrack may not only contain the munitions we desperately need, but also gives us a means of transport to get out of this place.

“Let’s take them out.”
“What?” While a whisper, Satoru’s words were veneered with a silver of anger. “I thought you gave up on being suicidal.”
“I did, but that doesn’t mean I’ll let a chance to kill some steppe barbarians slip away this easily.”
His response was an expected long, resigned sigh. “Well then, any plans on not getting us killed, Captain?”
“Well, I can distract them while the two of you move into a flanking position and perform an ambush. That’ll be our best shot.”
The Tohsaka generates little flash and smoke, making it hard to spot or counter-fire. With pinpoint accuracy at mid distance this rifle can be a devastating reaper of souls. Now if I can use this thing to her maximum potential…

“Actually I got a better idea.” Yanagi suggests, instantly grabbing our attention.
With her face curling into an enthusiastic smile, the girl holds ups her explosives again. “This building is on the verge of collapsing, all it takes is one last push. If we can lure the barbarians near it, I can bring down the ceiling and bury them alive. That should make it a lot easier!"

Satoru and I exchanged glances, looked back at Yanagi, and then went back staring at each other again.

“Umm… is there something wrong with…”
“NO, IT’S BRILLIANT.” The two of us applauded her in unison.

With the plan set in motion, we began carrying out our assigned tasks.
By utilizing a partially blocked off sewage system in an alley nearby, I found myself on the other side of the street, some blocks across the safe house where Yanagi could be slightly seen setting her C3s into place. Satoru, who has finished preparing the initial lure, positioned himself in an alleyway near the safe house.
Setting up my position within some ruined rooftop filled with rubble, I carefully observed the moving carriage as it passed through my position.

The utility halftrack is escorted by two shocktroopers and three scouts, factoring in the driver, there were a total 6 targets. Leading the group is the shocktrooper equipped with a large flamethrower, a terror for any soldiers seeking cover under trenches or behind obstacles, but a big fat target for any semi-decent sniper. But alas, this is not my time to shine yet.

Time appears to slow as they trudge forward, the scouts taking caution with each of their steps. I even swallowed a mouthful of saliva as they passed through Satoru’s position, but thankfully he managed to stay hidden, just like the professional he claims to be.

Then came the fateful moment, the very second the halftrack crossed the entrance of our safe house…

A percussive BANG greets this silent, monochrome world. Like a roar of a mythological thunder god, the old bookshelf inside the safe house fell like a collapsing monolith, grabbing the soldiers’ immediate attention. Of course, the first thing the barbarians did was to spray hellfire right into the windows of the first floor. Like the fire of the mythological dragon, it scorched the well-packed concrete and seared it bright red.

For a moment I could sense their triumph, which was instantly put out when Yanagi’s explosive performance took the center of the stage.
>>
The sound of four consecutive explosions stripped away the last pillars that supported the second floor, which then accumulated into a wonderful symphony of a building collapsing in on itself and shrieks of horror from the soldiers as the full weight of a concrete avalanche buried them alive.

One scout and one driver left, and the former was panicking instead of diving for cover, a fatal mistake I can’t be happier to capitalize on.

“Bingo.”

The 6.5×50mmSR cartridge empties under my breath, penetrating the scout right through his cranium. The driver, having eaten three rounds of Satoru’s pistol, fell off the vehicle and collapsed right beside his companion.
Yet it wasn’t over. To my horror, the flamethrower-wielding shocktrooper crawled out from the rubble. His equipment utterly destroyed, the man pulls out his pistol, aiming directly at my unsuspecting friend.

“Satoru!” I stood up and cried at the top of my lungs, only to be received by the sound of consecutive gunshots from a carbine.
Yanagi’s ended the steppe barbarian’s life before he can open his mouth to curse.

The thing about Pacific War was that I tried to write a story that delved into the connection and characterization of the main cast, but instead, only Aiteng ended up as a "character".
And since I can't see a way to fix that problem, I decided to reboot the story with a perspective that is easier to manage while still trying to achieve the same goals I set out to do.

But Aiteng and her lackey will definitely return as enemies

“Nice save, Yanagi,” I call out, hurrying back to my squad mates. She flashes me a thumbs up in response.
Satoru, on the other hand, wasted no time scavenging what remains of the convoy, starting from the trolley the halftrack was tolling. Turns out the cargo was carrying a field gun. Had we given them the chance to deploy that thing, we most likely wouldn’t have made it out alive.
Perhaps luck was more on our side than I expected, I thought to myself as Yanagi and I joined in the scavenging.

"Let's see... Shells, bandages, Aha, Grenades! And this is ...Beef jerky? Why is there beef jerky- whatever, I’m taking this."
Compared to the silent and composed Satoru, Yanagi was as jolly as a child on Shougatsu, shoving whatever she found to be of interest into her pockets.

“Anything over there, Satoru?” I asked,
“Yeah, some ammo crates.” Came a strained answer. “But there’s a minor problem”
"What is it?"
“These are Yu spec equipment. Nothing here matches with what we currently have at hand.”

With the stacks of captured armament from the Tengar-Yu war, it was logical for the Khaganate to make use of the surplus arms from their now conquered foe. The late Yu Dynasty's shares of small arms were derived from the Atlantic Federation, her longtime ally in trade and a major contributor to her industrialization.

Zipang, on the other hand, while also receiving extensive support from the East Europan Imperial Alliance, developed her own set of industry and military standards. This gave us a unique tech tree specialized for this nation’s people but also resulted in a mismatch with every other nation's firearms.

Sadly, there's no way I can fit a 7.92 Müller round into my 6.5 Tohsaka rifle.

Even so, having something was better than having nothing. Yanagi picked up a rifle from a fallen soldier and had most of her equipment refilled, while Satoru took a liking to a scavenged enemy bayonet.

"Here."

As I sat on the half-track to get some long awaited rest, Yanagi appeared before me as she presented me with a piece of dark brown, streaky piece of what I'm assuming is meat.
Seems like this was jerky she was muttering a while back.

"Satoru, you want some?"
"No, thanks."
Sharp and on the point, Satoru went back looting the bodies of dead soldiers.

I, on the other hand, took some time to examine this weird ration. "What is this, dog chew?"
"Just shut up and eat."
>>
As Yanagi and I sat at the half-track and gnawed on what I can only imagine was dog chew, my bespectacled friend returned and tossed me a bloodied enemy uniform. It belonged to the half-track’s driver, who took three shots of his pistol at point blank.

“Put these on.” He said flatly.
“What?”
“Their uniforms, we can’t just get away with enemy equipment without looking like them, can we?” He answers, tossing another set of uniform at Yanagi.
"Are you nuts? We'd be diving head first into hostile territory!” She protests. ”What if we run into a checkpoint? None of us here speak steppe hooligans, for fuck's sake!"
"No worries, look at that patch on the left chest."
Surprisingly, the words written on it were not alien at all. As a matter of fact, it’s kanji, word for word.
“We all at least know the Yu language right?” He kicks the naked, bloodied corpse aside. “These guys aren’t real steppe barbarians, they’re Yu conscripts.”
"So? Doesn't change the fact that we'd get busted at the first checkpoint or patrol we run into! What are we supposed to do if someone asks us something? Play mime?"
“Yanagi’s right,” I say. “Even if we can read it, it doesn’t mean any of us can speak the Yu language.”

“你確定?<Are you sure about that?>”

Wait a moment, what was that?
Like me, Yanagi can’t seem to believe what she just heard.

“How good was that? It’s a northern accent by the way.” Satoru adjusts his glasses, a gesture as to convey pride in showing off his linguistic skills.
“That was… very close, I guess.” Yanagi muttered in surprise.
I would have said the same, until I remembered he’s the son of a prominent diplomat of this nation.
“It might sound convincing to us, but to the enemy?” I question. Surely, a native speaker of the language can effortlessly pick up the little discrepancies in those who only learned it as their second.
“You see, that’s where you are wrong, my friend.” He explains. “The late Yu Dynasty, as well as every other dynasty that came before it, is infamous for its hundreds of regional accents and dialects. A little slip up can easily be covered up as long as I don’t explicitly state the part of the country I come from.”

“We’ll be counting on you then, Satoru.” For some reason, I feel as if my friend has suddenly assumed the role of a tour guide of sorts. Not that I am complaining, the man known as Satoru Aono has always been a reliable person regardless of the situations we find ourselves into, and it’s no different now.

“Here’s how things go.” He elucidates, “We have three uniforms: one relatively clean, one with bullet holes and covered in blood, and one bleached gray with debris and soaked with liquid ragnite. Not the most inconspicuous disguise but can pass as a crew of wounded returning from the front lines.”

“Where’d you get the clean one then?” I question.
“The guy with his brains all over the floor of course, and speaking of which, I must thank you for presenting me with an enemy uniform in such pristine condition.”
“Then wouldn’t it make more sense for me to wear that?” I shrug “It’s my hunt after all.”
“Except I’m the one who’s doing the talking,” he retorts. “The wounded and the one tending the wounded though, those roles are up for grabs.”

With that, he tosses me another set of uniforms, this one belonging to the flame trooper, which emitted a stench so potent I swear my five senses blacked out a moment.

“Ack, it smells like rotten sewage and gasoline.” Yanagi covers her nose with one free hand.
“Well, liquid ragnite composite is quite notorious for that smell.” Satoru follows up with the same action. “Unfortunately this is the best we have, lest we try excavating the dead buried under the rubble.”
“That wouldn’t be practical,” I say, handing the soaked uniform to Yanagi.

“… You’re joking.”
As expected, Yanagi clearly had no intention of taking that uniform by any means. I simply shook my head in slow motion.
"Look, this might smell bad, but surely it's better than being soaked in blood-"
“HELL NO! I'm not putting on that thing! Do you have any idea how volatile that fucking shirt is?"
