/qst/ - Quests

Your name is Katsuya Nekoyo, frequent visitor of hospitals and student of Tetsuyashi Academy for the Psionic Arts. Your track record recently has been absolutely stellar, seeing as how you’ve managed an entire month without breaking every bone in your body. This feat, of course, would’ve been completely impossible without the watchful eye of your friends.

One of which, who’s in front of you, is arguing with someone else. Her jet-black hair runs down and hiding an eye underneath—that’s Yamikigo Kyougetsu, also known as the self-proclaimed Empress of Darkness. You started calling her Yami since Yamikigo is way too long. Is she an actual Empress? Only the Shrine Gods know. Somehow, along the way, she had managed to rope you into becoming her duel partner for duo matches.

In this strange school built to foster the latent talents of dumb kids irresponsibly wielding strange powers, you won’t mind having others watch your back. Especially when the student council seems to be the most sinister gathering to have ever been recorded in history. They were also used at one point to threaten you, except nothing had come of it... that you think so.

The person who made the threat? A student a year older than you, Hitsujikaze Yukikata, and also the calm and composed girl who’s the unwilling participant of Yami’s argument. Her long hair flows down like a cloak, the ends singed with red. You vaguely recall that you’ve placated her anger with curry a while back. It’s been so long, you can’t even remember what she got mad over.

“Making plans with other people’s time...” Yukikata says, “...Are you that thoughtless?”

“Wha-“ Yami stutters, “It’s not like you have anything better to do!”

A twitch of an eye. “I do have plans...! Frankly, I’m tired of your games.”

“Hey, I’m always serious during our matches! Is this how you think of me?!”

“Yet you keep on coming back... what’s our score again? I’ve forgotten.”

“Ah, er— uh...” Yami sheepishly looks away. “I’ll win someday, I’ll bet my soul on that!”

“I don’t want it. I’m not... some kind of last boss for you to beat,” Yukikata replies, “...Go play with someone else.”

Yami bites her lip and mumbles, “Don’t put it like that.”

“Come back when you’ve made real progress.” With that as her farewell, Yukikata, turns around and walks away.

You sit on a small sofa, watching it all go down outside the academy sparring rooms. For some reason, Yami had been adamant about challenging—and winning against—the other girl since the start of the school year, making it a whole two months of losing nonstop. You can’t tell what’s more impressive, her perseverance or Yukikata’s patience. It’s probably the latter.

Yami sulks as she walks back to you. “Katsuyaaa.”

You look at her. “Hmmmm?”

She drops down on a seat besides you. “What should I do?”

”Hmm.”

You say, “Isn’t she always like that?”

“No way, she’s really mad this time.” Yami thoughtfully hums. “It’s my fault, isn’t it?”

“What, did you read her aura or something?”

“Err, yeah! Of course I did,” she grins. Then she mutters, “I’m kinda bad it at it though.”

You rack your brain. “Yami.”

She flinches. “Gah. You and your weird nicknames.”

“...Do you want to follow her?” you say.

“You want to stalk her?” she turns to you, giving you a questioning look.

“Don’t put it like that!” you reply, “The key to defeating an opponent is knowing your enemy!”

“Can we just leave like this?”

“No one’s going to know. Come on, aren’t you even a bit curious?”

She has a worried expression as she follows you out. “I didn’t know you were a delinquent.”

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.”

The two of you sneakily peek out onto the courtyard, scanning the area for Yukikata. You catch of a glimpse of her flowing hair rounding a corner and disappearing behind a building, and you quickly move. You get a couple of stares as you attempt to stealthily track and close in on your target, Yamikigo nervously following you,

Eventually you get to the corner and peek around... to see Yukikata peeking around a different corner to the back of the building, trying to hide herself.

“What is she doing?” Yami whispers to you.

If you’re watching her and she’s watching someone else, maybe you’re being watched right now...! You suddenly turn your head around, only to find... nothing. You let out a sigh of relief.

“W-what’s happening?” Yami says to you, completely confused.

You reply, “I can’t see anything. We need a different angle.” You glance around, and you spot the side stairs that run up across the side of the adjacent building. You point and whisper, “Do you think you can take us there? She might notice us if we walk.”

The black-haired girl checks around to see if anyone’s watching, and then says, “Are you really willing to be in debt to the Empress of Darkness?”

“...Yes?”

"Don't say that so easily." She pouts. “Hold your breath.”

Grabbing your arms, she pulls you toward her, and your surroundings explode in a cloud of smoke. There’s pressure from all sides as your lungs are squeezed empty almost immediately. Iridescent, shimmering lights bleed through the pitch-black darkness. You feel weightless, tugged along by another person, leaving behind a wake of black as you were swimming through water.

Then, you feel yourself touch solid ground again, your weight returning to your body.

You can hear the voices. Behind the building is some student—a third year, by the color of his uniform. He’s also talking to a familiar-looking, incredibly short girl. You spot the musical notes that’s holding her hair up, and you instantly recognize that she’s Rori Shiba. Loud, bratty, overly-aggressive, and practically whooped your behind twice. You try not to think about her. She’s also Yukikata’s friend, which you find it almost completely unsurprisingly that out of all the people that Yukikata would follow, it would be her.

The boy stammers something, and his face is hot red.

Yami whispers, “Oh, that’s one of those, um, what do you call it? Lolico—”

You pull her down right as Yukikata checks behind her and at where you two were. You hold a finger to your lips, to signify the need for silence. To that, Yami nods.

Slowly, you peek back up after a good while, only to find Yukikata still there, and still staring at you.

Her eyes are empty and expressionless, but you can tell that’s the same type of empty that might stab you with a kitchen knife after breaking into your house when you’re sleeping. Luckily, you’re a good distance away from her, meaning you still have time to run away.

Yukikata then points at you, then around the corner, and mouths something. You have absolutely no idea what she wants from you.

She does the motion again.

With that, you stand up and start to make your way down the stairs. Yukikata watches your every move. Step by step, you make your way closer and closer to the ground floor, where then you turn on your heel and start bolting it out of there. You can hear Yami behind you all the way until you make it back to the practicals building.

When you look back, you find that no one has followed you.

You say, “I think we saw something we shouldn’t have.”

“Why did you run?” she pants, out of breath from sprinting.

“For some reason, I thought I was going to die if I didn’t,” you answer. “Are you okay?”

She’s still wheezing. That’s some baffling poor constitution. “O-of course I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be? A ruler has to be fit.”

“Uh huh.”

Yami braces herself by putting her hands on her knees and locking her arms. She says, “Katsuya, this is so frustrating.” You’re taken aback for a moment. “Why can’t I win against her? Not even a single match...”

You doubt anyone has kept track of the amount of losses so far, but you wouldn’t even be surprised if it had reached the triple digits. You’re sure some of the matches only lasted a couple of seconds.

“Maybe it’s like a rock-paper-scissors type of thing?” you say.

“...” She doesn’t say anything.

“Maybe you've just been going about it the wrong way?” you toss out, “We can go over the match recordings, if you want.”

She grimaces. “What’s that’s supposed to mean? I don’t even wanna see them...”

Her spirits don’t seem to be too high. Maybe ice cream can help. Surely, it’s mystical powers can solve anything! However, no great power is without an equally great cost. You decide to keep it as a last resort, in the event that everything turns out terribly wrong.

“What about a doubles match?”

She looks at you questioningly. “I want to be her by myself, Katsuya—”

“I meant one without her. It’s been a while since we had a match together, so why don’t we have one now? We should get used to working alongside each other,” you say. In fact, the last time you were besides her was... all the way at the start of the school year. “That way, we can see what we both need help on.”

“I uh...” Yami says, averting her eyes. “Being an Empress means I need time to prepare! I can’t... I can’t have one right now.”

Huh? Wasn’t she the one that wanted to be your doubles partner this entire time? You frown slightly, unsure of what she means. Did you miss something?

Still, you say, tilting your head so you’re in her view, “And how long would preparations take?”

She takes a step back. “W-when I’m ready!”

You sigh. You’re not sure what the problem here is, exactly. “It’s just a scrimmage. A practice match between friends.”

Her eyebrows furrow as if you said something unpleasant. “...Against who?”

“Who are you okay with?”

After a moment, she replies, “Usagi, Kururi, and Nanana.”

...How many of those even have partners?!

You feel like Yami’s figure is shrinking by the second.

“...Nanana?”

“Nanana.”

That’s a classmate who you’ve interacted with barely, even in class. The only real time was during the stall in the festival. But apparently, Yamikigo is friendly with her?

---

“...Me?” Nanana says, a finger pointing to herself after your short search. She seems to be as surprised as you are.

Yami nods, while you say, “Yeah. Are you too busy?”

Nanana looks on uneasily for a moment. “No but, this isn’t your way of getting revenge on me, right?”

“You bet it is!” Yamikigo cries out, covering her already covered eye with a hand. “The Dark Dragon Empress never forgets! I will pay my debts back in full!”

“Are you still hung up over that curry thing?” you say, “Hey, nevermind—”

“If it’s a challenge, then I accept!” Nanana says, grinning. “Hey Rue!” she calls out, and someone hurries over.

“W-what is it?” He’s small and timid and wears an expression that makes you think he might break into a thousand pieces if anyone so much as brushes him.

“You up for a dual duel?” Nanana asks.

Like that, Rue’s eyes light up. “Oh, s-sure!” Now he looks like he might break into a thousand glowing pieces.

As the four of you walk, Rue goes besides you while Nanana tries to talk to Yami. “Katsuya,” he says.

“Hmm?”

“I-I know all about your Art, so don’t t-try stealing mine, okay?”

At this point, everyone knows. Probably.

”I don’t steal, I copy.”

“Y-you know what I mean!”

“Yes, and I refuse!” You say, throwing your head back and laughing madly.

“W-what is wrong with you?!”

“Telling me to not do that is like me asking you to fight with an arm tied behind your back.”

“How is that even the s-same thing!?” he says, “You r-really are a lunatic.”

“Could you expect anything less from the partner of the Dark Dragon Empress herself!?” you say, smirking. “Are you going to back out?”

He gives you a scornful look. “D-does it look like I’m going to back out?” Yes. Yes, he does. He almost looks like he’s about to cry too, but you really hope he isn’t. “I-I’ll beat you so fast you won’t even have the time to take it!”

“Good luck, then,” you say to him and then to Nanana as the four of you reach an empty sparring chamber.

The door locks behind as Nanana does the honors of playing with the setting panel besides it. She says, “Since we’re the ones being challenged, you two won’t mind if we set it, right?”

You look at Yami to answer, and she says across the room to them, “Okay!” She tries really hard not to add a taunt right after.

The girl punches in a couple of codes and presses some buttons, and the room starts disappearing. Psi fires off as the world is disassembled and reassembled again. A wave of light blocks the space between the four of you, and then the scenery becomes clear once more.

You are in a classroom.

“...Seriously?” you mutter, “Not very creative.”

“Where... are we?” Yamikigo says, looking around.

It’s certainly not a classroom inside Tetsuyashi. The windows are wider, the curtains are different, the blackboard is different. Everything is different, but only slightly.

You walk outside the classroom and look up and down the hallways. Empty, and also longer than you expected. They also both turn the same way, giving the appearance of a “U” shape.

You say to Yami, “Do you know their Arts?”

“...I don’t.”

“Nice. Me neither. This’ll be fun”

The rules of the engagement are simple: the first to grab the other’s emblem wins. When in teams of two or more, the first team to lose all of their emblems to the other team is the loser.

“What’s the plan?” Yamikigo asks.

If she’s asking you, then... “Let’s sneak around. We don’t know what they can do, so we should be careful.”

In doubles, coordination is key. Everything hinges on how well you work with your partner. Your timings, how well you know their thinking, coordinating and communicating instantly and clearly. Being stuck with someone is also a quick way of figuring how well you two can get along. There’s also no better way of improving than actually doing the thing yourself.

[22]

Quietly as you can, you step out and start making your way to the nearest end. Passing classrooms, you peek through the glass windows and find no one. You keep walking and eventually make it to a corner. When you look over, you find an empty hallway... that also continues turning. The whole building is actually like a giant loop, you find, kind of like a square donut.

You send out your psi field, feeling your psi brush along everything... everything...

You hit a wall. Multiple walls. Similar to the doorways in Tetsuyashi, there’s a thin psi field constructed between the actual, physical walls in this building. It’s disruptive and disorienting.

You have absolutely no idea where Nanana and Rue are.

[8]

You begin making your way to the stairs. Checking back on Yami, you peer over your shoulder. When you turn back, you find... no one. You stand up straight, panicking a little. Retracing your steps, you make your way back, and when you turn the corner, you bump into Yami. She staggers back, surprised.

You whisper, “Hey, what are you—”

A flash.

You’re sent flying back, something slamming straight into your jaw. The ground that you fall onto is hard and unforgiving. Your eyes flutter as your vision swims. There’s a hole in the psi field in the floor where the light came from, and your own field brushes along something.

[91]

You move to the side as another beam of light phases from the floor to the ceiling, almost striking you again. Yami rushes over, pulling you up.

Air leaves your lungs as the two of you become smoke again. She drags you across the hallway at tremendous speeds, ending when you try and gasp for air. You materialize and crash onto the floor, your roll stopping as you hit the wall.

You groan as Yami helps you up.

She asks, “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.”

A second passes, and there’s no following attack.

You seem to be on the other side of the building.

“Thanks for that.”

“Mm,” Yami hums.

When you take a step forward, you find that your legs are wobbling.

“Give me a second,” you say, “What the hell was that attack?”

“I think... it was an arrow?” Yami says.

You shake your head, rub your jaw, and give your fists a squeeze. When you take a step again, you find that you can walk straight. That’s much better.

“Can they hit you when you use your Art?” you say.

“They’re made out of psi, so I think they can...”

With that, you say, “Okay. Let’s run. Come on!”

You slam open the door to the staircase and start making your way down as fast as possible, jumping the fast few steps when you can.

You feel your psi field shifting again, and you throw up a barrier.

22/250 ??? (???)

The flying spear of light smashing into your psi, and the collision causes both of disappear. This is a cheat skill! You keep running while Yami disappears into mist as often as she can.

Eventually the two of make it to the ground floor, pushing through the emergency exit outside to see...

Nanana.

She raises a hand up and points in your direction. Seven orbs of light are in the sky, and one by one they start flying toward you in straight lines. Their ends are sharp like an arrowhead, picking up speed by the second until they either hit you or fly straight into the ground.

34/250 ??? (Nanana Ryuushi)

You kick off, sending yourself away from the barrage. You look to see Yami, and she’s separated from you. Suddenly, you feel something behind you. You throw up another barrier.

[94]

You don’t skimp on its strength. A raining hail of arrows smashes down, almost tearing through it all. The light quickly subsides, and on the roof is...

Also Nanana?

Your brow furrows as you glance back and forth between the two girls.

You face Yami, who’s also looking at you. You nudge your head in the direction of the Nanana that’s right in front of you two, and she nods.

You clutch the floor with both of your hands, and then you send your psi through it. The ground ripples towards your target while Yami takes a deep breath and disappears again.

Nanana faces you, pointing toward you and completely ignoring Yami. The arrows fall down on you again, but a new barrier completely blocks all of them with ease.

The cloud of black mist draws closer, and sudden it stops. It tries dispersing, only for the seven falling arrows to fall down, dotting the ground with blows while completely missing Nanana. The ends of shadows become wisps, and Yami falls out, coughing. Seven more blows come again, but you grab her and shield her with another barrier.

65/250 ??? (Nanana Ryuuji)

The one on the roof... did she see you when you were still in the hallways? Did you somehow miss her?

“That one’s a fake!” Yami says.

“How can you tell?” you say, falling back.

“I don’t... know?” she says, “She’s kind of different.”

“Are you just saying that because she’s trying to send us to the hospital?”

“No, it’s...” she mumbles, “That might be Rue? I have a plan.” You look at her, waiting for a response. “I need you distract him.”

This is just like the fight with Shiba again, isn’t it? You groan. Yami’s too weak to handle blows, so that leaves it up to you?

Regardless, you nod.

She takes another deep breath, and explodes into a swirling wind of shadows.

Illusion on Yami. Track her with it.

Barrier on yourself. Perfect Pitch underneath.

[47]

The ground explodes as you kick off, you flying at Nanana, or Rue. It doesn’t matter. Three arrows from above easily tear through your psi and knock the wind out of you, causing you to lose momentum. Four arrows try to scatter Yamikigo again, but your illusion barely helps her get away with it. She reforms in the middle of the other’s girl attack, and she tackles Nanana/Rue. They’re sent flying toward you as you pick yourself up.

You reach out, grabbing them just as they grab you.

Katsuya’s Psi Signature... Recorded?

Huh?

You are face to face with... yourself.

You—no, Rue— whispers, “Perfect Pitch, right?”

The space between both of you expands and swells, and you are separated from him once more.

You groan as you pick yourself up.

The air whistles as the rain of arrows start coming.

You have to psi blast him—the longer this match draws out, the lower the chance of winning at all. You launch yourself into the air while Yami watches, unsure what you are doing. Rue tries to use Perfect Pitch again, but the attack is magnitudes weaker than what you can do. Your barrier blocks the blow, and you grab ahold of him again.

[99]

He grips your arm, and you feel his psi mimicking yours as he pushes against you. That’s fine. You let his psi swing like a pendulum along yours, and when it returns for the second time, you exert all of your force.

His psi ruptures out from behind him, an explosion of energy that spills everywhere. He looks at you in surprise, shocked that his attack wasn’t the one that got through. You swing him around, and Nanana’s blows fall down.

[92]

You stop.

His body has no more psi.

He won’t feel a single hit.

Yami, distracted by what had happened, watches, dumbfounded and unmoving. You run to her, tossing Rue’s unconscious body aside. You might end up in the hospital, but she might have it worse! You jump and make a barrier with the last of your psi.

The seven arrows of light converge, forming a thick spear. It strikes down, and for a second, you thought your barrier might hold.

[22]

It’s torn apart in the center, and the blow lands right on your chest. You hear something crack, and you are surrounded an engulfing shadow. Your momentum eventually stops, and your body stops falling backwards. Eventually, you are gently lowered onto the ground. Your emblem is in pieces.

Yami looks at you worriedly. She’s still fine. You managed to prevent a complete wipeout.

“Are you okay?!” she frantically asks.

“Stop looking at me and look behind you,” you say, motioning to the incoming barrage of arrows. “I’ll leave the rest to you.”

She gives you a last glance before she turns into mist again. Just before the arrows hit your face, you’re taken out of the simulation, the world around dissolving away. Lying there for a moment, you take a moment to appreciate how much it doesn’t hurt to not move. Then, you move.

Grunting, you manage to get up and look around you. You’re in an observatory room thanks to Nanana's settings, you guess. Rue’s sitting on a chair beside you, his head leaning back on the wall.

Your ribs hurt.

You poke Rue.

When he doesn’t move, you poke him again.

“Wake up,” you say.

You bring a finger closer, and he slaps it away. “Stop that.”

“I thought you were going to sleep the entire time?”

“Q-quiet.”

You look over at the large monitors, watching Yamikigo and Nanana. A large control panel is below it, and there’s a locked cabinet on the side. The room has its lights turned off, so only the monitor brightens up the room.

Rue mumbles, “I underestimated you.”

“...?”

“I thought you were like a jack-of-all-trades or something,” he quietly explains.

“Hey, I’m actually good at some things too.”

“That Psi Blast of yours is really interesting,” he says, “I think I might... steal it.” He finishes that with a grin, and you groan as you tilt your head back.

He won this exchange.

You are Yamikigo Kyougetsu.

That sounds really weird, but it is what it is.

You are the living embodiment of failure. You feared it once before, but as with all things, it has come to pass. This is your fault. This is your fault that you’re in this situation. This is your fault that he got hurt.

You’ve made a mistake. You were selfish, and then you let him be selfish. Why are you like this? Why is everything so difficult? Why can’t you even focus when he’s relying on you even now?

Nanana’s off the roof. You don’t know where she is, but you know she has ridiculously sharp ears. You peer down the hallway to find that the coast is clear. How can you even win this? You’re slow, weak, and really god damned dumb. You bite your lip and try to hide it all. He’s watching.

You don’t want to look like this when he’s watching.

Taking a deep breath, you stomp on the ground. An arrow of light tears through the walls just as you avoid it by transforming. It came from above you, to your left. You can’t go through the ceiling, so that’s out of the question.

The ring-shaped building has its center completely clear, letting a small courtyard sit in the center at the bottom with direct line of sun. Artificial sun, anyways.

You need to reach her.

Genuflecting is a Tier 6 invocation ritual that's intended to facilitate the construction of a astral-mental wormhole through the use of a transmutational 13-point convex point star spell circle. Unfortunately, you have neither the blood of a alien space beetle flowing through you to use as an alchemical source, nor do you have the knowledge to construct such a circle in the first place. This is what happens when you don't take art and astrophysiology like Usagi or Kururi.

Sweet. Once we max that one out it’s gonna be unstoppable.

In the meantime we should try to max out our Illusion rank so we can appear to be genuflecting at all times, even if we can’t actually be at a given moment.

You go through all of your options.

The stairs? It’s the long way, but maybe it’s the least likely you can screw yourself over with. The ceiling? Probably, but that just means you could be run right into Nanana’s arrows. If only her attacks actually damaged the walls, then you could have her into destroying them for you. With all of that in mind, you still have one option left—the window. It’s probably locked.

You can’t be cut by glass when you’re ethereal, and you can still exert enough force to break through, but what if you fall?

The answer to this question is simple: don’t think about it.

Forcibly hyperventilating, you prepare to stuff yourself as much oxygen as much as possible. Half a minute passes, and you step forward. A single sound in a world of silence.

A flash of light splits through the air, but you’re already transformed. With a hazy line of sight, you dive straight at the pane of glass.

81/250 ??? (Nanana Ryuuji)

Shimmering light as the shards reflect the sky and the sun. You rise into the air, your body twisting and flowing behind you. You try and let the parting wind push the mist away before the arrows strike. Bracing yourself again, you go through another window.

158/250 ??? (Nanana Ryuuji)

Into a shower of spears. Your lungs are squeezed empty as you’re forced into existence again, gasping for breath. You hold on for a few more seconds as you slip safely into the classroom and land on your feet, allowing you to react instantly—

196/250 ??? (Nanana Ryuuji)

—to a second barrage. This time, the attack misses you easily. Breathing heavily, you try and orient yourself.

The attacks have stopped. All you know is that Nanana’s on this floor, but you weren’t paying close enough attention to know where she was exactly.

Where is she?

Sneak around.

It’s the best thing you can do.

You don’t have the strength to fight her head on, but you can move without sound with your Art.

[47]

From point to point, you turn into smoke and back to human again and again, advancing from the classroom to the hallways. You let the pitch-black air drift underneath the cracks and doors, and you peer up, down, and all around. There’s a faint light in a corner far away, an unmoving proof of Nanana’s presence.

A part of you splits, letting your psi stretch far and thin as much as possible. You direct it around the looping building, in the direction opposite that you’ll head. Steeling yourself mentally, you continue.

[39]

The stillness is unnerving. Why hasn’t she moved? Eventually, you come so close, you can practically hop around the corner and leap at her. With one hand on the wall, you prepare yourself to attack.

“Haa!”

That wasn’t from you. A violent force strikes at you from the side, throwing you against the opposing classroom door and through it. You wince as you drag yourself up with the help of a desk.

266/250 Sunstrike (Nanana Ryuuji)
Sunstrike recorded.

Nanana is looking at you, prepared. “Wow, I can’t believe that worked.” She baited you and hid in a classroom?

Six shots light up, the seventh you already knew where it was. You become ethereal, and she attacks. They don’t converge, but instead all go in a straight line, trying to cover as large an area as she can.

You try to dodge, but you can’t. Instead, you cover your emblem, rather that your hand block the shots instead. You lose focus, and you feel yourself get pinned to the wall. You slink down. All of your efforts go into staying awake.

Nanana raises her hand again. “Yamikigo, are you alright?” When you don’t reply, she says, “I’m starting to feel a little bad here. It’s just a friendly game, so—”

Your eyes pry open as you take a deep breath.

[71]

“The Gates of Hell, Open!” you cry.

Your secret trick. You become the air itself, stretched as thin as your psi, whisking and whirling and flying as you instantly drag yourself to the separated cloud from before—the one that’s now beneath Nanana’s feet, snaking and curling around her legs. Like an explosion, you reform right beside her.

Your fingertips brush on her emblem, and you grab it, just as the arrows fire again.

You can hear the horn.

”As expected of an Empress,” you say, ”Let’s celebrate with ice cream.”

You bring up—or rather, lower—a hand, and Yamikigo slowly high fives it.

“Yesss,” she says, “I think I’m going to lie here for a little more.”

“Take your time,” you say.

Nanana and Rue walk up to you. The former says, “Katsuya! Yamikigo! That was a great match.”

Rue mutters, “I can’t believe we lost.“

“Don’t underestimate us!” you say. You grab your shoulder and squeeze it. “You guys don’t hold back.”

Nanana replies, “That would be rude.”

Rue continues, “It’s not like you guys held back either. I think you might have broken something.” He rubs his jaw.

“Hey, isn’t that my line?” you say.

Nanana laughs, “Sorry. Hey, let’s do this again sometimes.”

Yami groans. “Nooooo.”

Rue shakes his head, “I think I’ll pass.”

“I’ll think about it,” you say, completely ignoring the other two.

They then talked about Yami’s trick at the end for a little bit before leaving and saying goodbyes.

You crouch down besides Yami, who’s still laying on the floor.

She says, “...If you want to change partners, I won’t blame you.”

“Don’t say things like that.”

“...Ah, I almost screwed everything up.”

“Both times we’ve teamed up, I’ve been knocked out and you’ve won the match for us. I probably just need to be less reckless and focus on sustainable team tactics. You did great.”

“I got lucky,” she mutters.

You sigh. There’s that thing again. “You’re doubting yourself too much. Try keep a cool head and focus on what you need to do to win. You’re a lot better at this than you give yourself credit for,” you say, “Look at what you did in the last moment?”

“It was the same thing I did with Shiba.”

“But that won us two matches. If you keep working on using your Art like that, I’m sure you’ll do amazing.”

Yami covers her head with her arms. After a while, she asks, “Do you mean it?”

“Everything I said, I meant it.”

A pause. Then, she gets up and starts walking ahead you. You can’t see her face, or her expression. “T-the Dark Dragon Empress needs no encouragement!” she says, and then she adds, in a much lower voice, “But... I’m grateful—" You follow her. “Let’s go get ice cream already!”

---

“That’s a what?”

“The ice cream machine,” you say, pushing the lever and watching the ice cream slowly fall down onto the cone. “...Did no one tell you about this?” It was always in the cafeteria.

She looks on in anticipation and says nothing.

“If you want something cold... I can turn you two into popsicles,” a voice suddenly says. You jump back and almost knock the cone over. Yukikata is standing there, watching you two irately. “Enjoying yourselves...?”

Yami says nothing as she tastes the ice cream.

“Hey,” you say, not having the strength within you to truly ask her what is up, “Do you want one?

“No, I don’t—”

“You’re missing out,” you say, getting a cone for yourself. You notice that Yami is pouring copious amounts of sprinkles on hers. Chocolate sprinkles. You do your best to not violently recoil from horror.

“What, are you lactose intolerant or something?”

If there was an aura around her, you feel like it’s become menacing.

“No,” Yukikata says, “You saw, didn’t you?”

“I saw nothing!” Yami replies, “My eyes could not penetrate the insurmountable fog of despair, so I couldn’t have seen anything at all!”

“What she said,” you say.

“I don’t know about her... but I know you saw, Katsuya.”

“Wha- why me?” you say. “We couldn’t see anything up there, right, Yami?”

She winces. “I’m afraid I can’t answer that! Sorry Katsuya, but I’ll leave this to you,” she says, leaving. You try to stop her, but she sidesteps out of your way. “Only a sick deviant can handle another! Farewell, and good luck!”

Yukikata eyes flare, but it was too late; Yami was already out of sight and running away. For a moment, you deeply regret trying to help her.

You say, “So, what is it?”

“...Katsuya—”

“Wait, this is about Shiba, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Yukikata replies, “...This is of utmost importance.”

For some reason, you really, really doubt that.

Some time in the future, we need to take a closer look at Yamikigo's signature like we did with itsumo and kururu. We might be able to get some more insight on her mentality or be able to find a way to help her improve like with Kururu's barrier. If all else fails, we can practice with her skill until we max it and help her understand it better.
Also she would probably be more confident in herself if we showed more interest in her as a girl, for example by holding her hand while we analyze her signature rather than just touching her arm or something.
