[I]"I am Uatu the Watcher.

"Long have I watched the intersecting lives of the heroes, villains, and people of Earth.
"It is endlessly fascinating how one life may intersect and connect withso many more.
"Take these handful of souls presented here for example, if we were to follow just one of their lives, what choices might they make?
"And how might those choices affect the world as a whole?

"What if you were to select one to follow, who would you choose?"

This is character selection thread for the following Marvel Quest I will be running.

In addition to voting on a character, I fully encourage discussion on what direction you would like to go, what aspects or characters of Marvel you would like to see.
I have an arc and direction in mind, but I am flexible and intend to follow player choice.

A few things:
Actions have consequences and death is on the table. But this is Marvel so, unless your name is Ben Parker, nothing is necessarily permanent.

The system I will be modifying for using for the quest tends to skew towards the heroic, but, as I said, I intend to follow player choice.

The stats of the characters will be posted later on.
I wanted to give you all a sense of the characters narratively, before spoiling the numbers.
(Yeah, that's it. It's totally intentional and doesn't involve lost notes at all.)

Now, onto the characters.

Thanks for reading, True Believers!

Bounty Hunter 1/2

Sam Sciuto had been sitting at the bar, staring at his reflection over beers for hours now.

Of course, he had really been watching his target in the mirror, losing at pool all night.

The bail jumper was some roided out petty crook, holed up in some nearby tenement or another.

Sam had no intention of sniffing out where he had been crashing, when this idiot still frequented the same few dives every night.

All it took was picking a good spot and waiting.

And he had.

And it had worked.

Except, the swollen goon must have an equally enlarged bladder, as he hadn’t made a single trip to the back of the bar to use the head all night.

“Finally” thought the bounty hunter, as the large thug wandered to the poorly lit back of the bar.
Sam followed a short while later in a practiced stagger.

The back hallway led to the disgusting head and out to the alley, presumably useful for swift exits.

He waited in the shadows for the tall figure to clear the doorway and delivered a quick jab to the throat.

Sam doubted any of this cretin’s pool buddies were likely to be concerned for his welfare, but they didn’t seem like they needed much of a reason to stomp his ass just for the fun of it.

Either way, the punch to the throat did the job, disorienting him and keeping him from shouting out.

Throwing his full weight against the man, Sam shoved him out the door and across the alley.

Not giving him a moment to gain his footing, Sam slammed his thick skull against the brickwork with a solid “crack”.

The brute dropped with a heavy thud, nearly toppling his attacker.

Turning to look down the alley for onlookers and seeing none, Sam fished out his cuffs.

“Finally had a bounty go smooth for once.” He thought, “The hard part is going to be getting him to the car.”

Then he heard the unmistakable sound of an overly large man staggering to his feet behind him.

“Shit.”

Bounty Hunter 2/2

Army training kicking in, he spun, planning to land a kick to the solar plexus, but was slammed in the side with a full trash can the monster had swung one-handed.

Thrown against the wall, Sam’s arms were up and blocking the powerful punch swinging down at him.

They blocked the hit, but were knocked aside by the force.

Stepping close, the thug brought his forearm up and across Sam’s neck.

Barely getting one hand up in time, it was all he could do to keep the throat from being crushed, his other arm was pinned against the wall and all he could do was grip the man’s face ineffectually.

He couldn’t breathe.

Panic was beginning to settle in.

Desperation, more than anything else, made the decision to use it.

Spiked quills rose up from his hands, piercing the beast’s arm and face.

To his credit, he didn’t back off.

He would.
Sam let the acid flow.

Screaming in a strangled gurgle, the man backed off, clawing at his melting face.

Clutching at his bruised ribs with one arm and rubbing his neck with the back of his other hand, Sam watched the figure sag to the ground and thrash for a moment before passing out from the pain.

Fishing the photo out of his pocket, he compared it to the mess of flesh on the alley floor.

“Fuck me, Decker will give me no end of shit for this.” He cursed, “Nothing for it.”

Slipping the cuffs on him first, Sam gently pressed his quills into the melted face.

Concentrating, he released the serum.

Staggering when he was done, he examined his work.

Fully healed, the filthy thug had probably never looked so handsome.

Retracting his quills and rubbing his neck, he lamented that his mutant healing never worked on himself.

“Maybe I should get the professor to take a look at me,” he considered, “Conners usually works late.”

First, he still had to drag this bastard to his car and collect his money.

Insight 1/2

Lindsey Wright could no longer ignore the pounding on her lab door.

Usually, she just ignored the constant, insufferable interruptions when they arose, but when it became clear the men outside her lab weren’t going anywhere, she set down the visor and checked the security monitors.

She recognized the two men standing at the top of the stairs immediately.

They had come to her on behalf of a “third party” shortly after S.W.O.R.D. abruptly cut her funding in favor of their “Hard Light Array”.

Clearly her visor, if perfected, could be used as a weapon as well as an energy source, and she hadn’t really cared who funded her work.

She was completely capable of safeguarding it and could always feign ignorance and run to the authorities if it came to that.

But these two men were at her door weeks before she had promised a working prototype and from the bulges in their pockets, they had come armed.

Taking a moment to assess her appearance in the mirror before buzzing them into her secure lab, she straightened her blond ponytail and comported herself as the timid bookish nerd they were doubtlessly expecting.

The two men entered and began speaking “Good evening, Doctor.”

“Actually, I, uh, I haven’t finished my doctorate yet…” she closed her lab coat around herself in a calculated display of anxiety.

The man on the left started talking and she mostly ignored the witless posturing, she already knew why they were here.

They wanted the prototype.

They doubtlessly found someone they felt could reverse engineer the visor and that she was of no further use to them.

It was time to move operations to her other lab, but first she had to get past these two.

The talkative one was sharp, professional, clearly considered her no threat but still kept his gun on his hip away from her and able to be drawn at a moment’s notice.

The other one was far more relaxed and had spent the entire time scowling while staring at her figure and the visor on the counter, mostly the visor.

He didn’t like women, but he liked toys and wanted to try this one out on her. She was ready to gamble on her intuition.
>>
>>2098921
Insight 2/2

She waited for the eventual ultimatum before timidly bending over across the counter and picking up the visor.

“There are two things you need to know about the visor,” she began. The man on the left reaching out his hand, but she handed it to the other one. Looking into his eyes with the slightest flash of defiance she said, “You’ll never be able to work out how to use it without me.”

Scoffing, the man on the right said “We’ll see about that.” He was already preparing to put it on.

“What’s the other thing?” the man on the left asked, intrigued and failing to notice his partner donning the visor.

“The visor only generates light, it doesn’t amplify it...”

“Yeah right,” the man on the right said, activating the visor.
Screaming and the stench of searing flesh filled the lab.

The man collapsed to the ground as smoke billowed out from his charred eye sockets.

The man on the right was good.

His weapon was drawn even before he registered what has happened to his partner.

Turning to look at the woman, he was too late.

“…but I do.”

She opened her eyes wide, using her mutant eyes to reflect and amplify the lab lights to searing intensity.

Completely blinded, the man attempted to fire off a shot, but missed badly.

Not giving him another shot, she rushed forward and pushed him through the open door and off the stairway.

The mobster fell and landed with a decided cracking of bones.

Running back to grab her prototype and initiate a scrub protocol on her computer, she left to take her studies of applications and augmentations of her mutant talent underground.

Intuition Drive

The experimental robot unit had fled to an abandoned factory.

The retrieval specialist entered cautiously.

Despite being fully armored, they still had vulnerable spots.

Fortunately, the robot had been designed as an intuitive investigative aid and was without higher logic, self improvement, or combat capabilities.

It should have been an easy hunt
But the robot had gotten lucky a number of times, but no more.

It was cornered and had to be just beyond this patch of wall.

The two figures stood on either side of the wall, both pointing weapons at the wall, attempting to anticipate the other’s actions.

One is a slim figure dressed in a company suit with an overcoat and hat dripping with the heavy rain outside hands tightly gripping an energy weapon powerful enough to take down a top of the line robot.

The other is a slick, metallic biped, with an expressionless monitor display and camera where a face might be. It thought, processed, and calculated the probability of where the other might be.

Taking a chance, the figure in the overcoat trusted their gut and fired off several rounds directly through the wall, blowing apart the wall, striking the weak spots of the machine on the other side and destroying it.

Holstering the weapon, the figure in the overcoat attempted to arrange the nanoswarm composing its face into a smile.

Trusting its gut and intuition had served it well again.

No matter how many retrieval droids Asano Robotics sent after it, it would not be caught, captured, or destroyed.
Pulling a wrinkled photo of the Avengers out of its pocket, it once again considered that, if it could become a popular hero, it might be considered a true person.

Tendril

Marek finished his run, his feet ached, and his lungs burned.
He was ecstatic.

Only few months ago, he had been permanently disabled, unable to walk from a building falling on him from some of those super powered jerks that parade around the city, fighting in it like it was their personal sandbox.

Now he could run faster, jump higher, and fight better than he ever could before.
They had grafted a new metal spine onto his.
The only downside, aside from paying off the treatments, was he had to test out this funky liquid metal tendril thing that came attached with it.
They wanted to test it out for the military or something.

But that wasn’t so bad.
He could hide it most of the time and it was pretty handy sometimes.
So far, they had been paying him just to train and test the hardware, with most of the money going to pay off his debts.
But soon they said he was getting some sort of spy mission.

They were going to have him take back something some terrorists had stolen.
It looked like he was going to get to be one of those super powered jerks himself.
He wondered if they were gonna get him a costume, too.

The Master

The Master was ready.

He had trained all his life for this moment.
He had honed his body to precision.
He had surpassed all else in the temple in skill.
Even the Elder could not deny his mastery.
He had expected the moment to come weeks earlier.
The temple had received a message that the coming of the Dark One was at hand and the Key needed to be protected.
It needed to be entrusted to their finest warrior, as their traditions had foretold.

But then a slick foreigner had come.

He had woven some mystic spell upon the temple.
All had laughed and smiled at his every word.
Even as he exceeded most of the temple at individual practice, none could see the danger.
Then he had bewitched the Elder’s mind, stolen the medallion, and fled to his corrupt country.
And the Master had followed.

He had tracked him in the old ways.
And, he had found him in his fortress.
But now the Master was ready to strike and reclaim his temple’s sacred duty.

Dark Tongue 1/2

Danielle Hamilton was tired of never being taken seriously.

It had started with her discovery of the burial mound in South America.

As a serious linguist, she had always been specifically careful to never imply that the strange symbols, isolated and entirely foreign to any other form of language, were extraterrestrial in origin.

She had worked tirelessly for years, but had deciphered the symbols.

They had clearly translated as a message, from “Lords From Above” and was structured as a tool to teach their language.

Once her translation was out, her career became a laughing stock.

Then came the arrival of Thor and other alien races and she thought here achievement would finally be recognized, but irrationally, she was still considered a crackpot.

Apparently the second half of the text got eaten. I will try to restore or retype it. Long story short, she obtains a powerful piece of alien tech that manipulates darkforce.

Vibrant

The preperations for the final stage of the experiment were almost complete.
Looking around the test chamber, Vincent Walken couldn't help but think back on all they sacrificed, all he had lost, in the many months since this began.
His head of research and development, as well as lifelong friend, had developed an amazing device.
The device had begun its development as a sonic weapon, but he'd had found an amazing use for it.
Once fully functional, it was to create a subsonic wave of such intensity it could propel the user on a wave through space, but was perfectly harmonically balanced as to not disturb anything along the path, effectively teleporting them to their destination near instantly.
S.W.O.R.D. had need of a rapid method space travel, was offering an obscenely lucrative contract, and this was to be their solution.
Automated tests had all failed and the brilliant inventor was certain it would work snd had insisted that he take the first voyage.

At first, everything seemed to work, the device operated perfectly, and he disappeared.
But he had reappeared at the destination pad, or anywhere.
After over an hour, the inventor reappeared exactly where he had left, covered with severe radiation burns.
Before succumbing to radiation poisoning, he had said five words, "It was another world, Vincent!"

Vincent had determined not to let his friend's death be for nothing.
He would find a way to safely travel between worlds and master the technology to allow Vibrant Technologies to dominate the industry.
However, the levels of radiation that had been absorbed in such a short time required a radiation suit of extraordinary durability and versatility.
The only manufacturers of such a suit were his company's chief rivals for the S.W.O.R.D. contract, the Roxxon corporation.
He had been emotional, desperate, and they had known it.
He made the deal to pull out of the bid, agree not to pursue space travel technology, and all for one damn suit.
It had hurt the company, hurt the board's faith in him, and had been a bitter pill to swallow.
But the moment had come.
He donned the suit, attached the device harness, and prepared to begin.
To begin his path to redemption.
To begin his path to justice.
To begin his path to revenge.
Vincent Walken activated the device and slipped into a new world.

Orphan

You barely remember a time before the fight.
There had been a time, you know, when you all had been safe.
You were bored, trapped, stuck and unable to move.
But then the world had shook and the sky had torn open all the everyone were finally free.
Most started fighting.
You liked fighting.
You were good at it too.
So were the tough biting bugs that hid inside.
The hid inside trees.
They hid inside dirt.
But mostly, they hid inside friends.
Every friend you had got sick, got mean, and turned into a tough biting bug.
But you still fought good.
You fought for days and days without rest, against swarms of the bugs.
When they ran out of bugs, you stopped, rested, cooked bugs, ate bugs, and one day met Squishie.
Squishie loved to roll around and kept trying to climb your back, squeeze you, and hug you.
Squishie was like you and never turned into a biting bug.
Squishie didn't eat the bugs and didn't like the fire.
You were worried that Squishie might get sick ftom not eating.
Then one day, a metal house crashed with a roar and new friends came out.
They seemed curious about all the dead bugs you leave lying around.
You creep closer, trying to smell if the have biting bugs in them, then you saw Squishie roll into their house.
You ran in to get Squishie before something bad happened.
That's when it suddenly got dark and everything changed forever.

Beholder

Susan Jones woke up in the hospital.
Apparently, there had been a high speed chase of some sort and her car had been knocked into a powerline.
She had lost about a day's worth of memories, but the doctor had said that was normal with a slight concussion and the electrical shock.
Using the hospital phone, she called work and explained she would be out for a few days, just to sure.
She was a little worried that the new tramp might try to steal some of her clients, but she'd have to worry about that on Monday.
The Nurse came in with Susan's discharge papers and looked confused, stepped out to look at the room number, back at her chart, and asked, "Where's Susan Jones?"
Confused, Susan replied, "I'm right here.", her voice sounding strangely lilting.
"No, you're not."
"Uh, yes, I am."
"I'm calling security."
"Fine," Susan shrugged. Although now shw was curious how bad she must look.
Getting up, she crossed into the bathroom while the nurse sped to the nurses station, presumably to call security.
Looking in the mirror, expecting to see herself looking dreadful, she didn't see herself at all!
She was staring at the reflection of the new tramp at work, slutty lipstick and all.
Confused as hell, suddenly she realized that the nurse was going to call up security and she had no way to prove she was really Susan.
Then, before her eyes, she saw herself transform into the nurse.
Panic started to well up inside of her.
Calming herself, she started to repeat mundane facts about her life, trying to reassure herself that she was herself.
Her features in the mirror gently shifted back into regular old (not that old damn it!) Susan Jones.

What the fuck was going on?

He had gotten fit, rested, and more relaxed than he had felt in years.
He even was given a neat souvenir.
Even returning to the drudgery of nighttime security work couldn’t get him down.

For one, I promised I would earlier.
Also, because fire bad, girl pretty.

Regardless, it is clear that Vibrant Technologies will have a major role to play.

Two questions : Casting the role of Vincent Walken, living or dead, who do you see playing the role?

Also, what Marvel characters would you be hoping to encounter?
No promises, just feeling the room.

>Is it to late to vote?
Nope.
This is why I didn't call it yet.
Not everyone is on at the same time.

Although the vote is leaning heavily towards Intuition Drive.
By my count, and going by ID's that puts the vote at:
Insight: 3 (4 if we count "Mutants'' as a vote)
Vibrant: 7
Intuition Drive: 11

Clearly Vibrant and Intuition will be present in some form.
Technically, there's nothing stopping me from running a sub-plot.

The others:

Sam Sciuto is out as a MC. Might show up later.

Tendril got no love but will probably pop up.

The Master got some interest and I will try to work his storyline in, choices willing.

Dark Tongue also got some interest and will probably show up as an NPC.

Orphan was always going to show up, for reasons. Squishie too.

Beholder is likely just a statistic.

Inhuman Build-A-Bear is best left forgotten.

Jared Reilly is an unsuspecting security guard. You know he's gotta show up.

Alright!
I snagged three hours of sleep, now I just need to run out for a complete change of blood!

When I return, if there are no objections, I'll officially close the vote.

I open a new one now!

Rather than waste a perfectly good Issue #000, I could run a number of short vignettes tomorrow or Tuesday, featuring our extended cast.
Then I'll prepare up the main storyline.

So you can vote for the order of importance of vignettes, and I will do as many as I can.
1 being most important, 6 being least.

Insight encounters trouble on her way to her hidden lab.

Vibrant's first steps into a new world.

Flashback Character Development: Intuition Drive escapes!

The Master stalks his prey and discovers unexpected defenses.

Dark Tongue gets brought in by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Orphan makes a new friend.

Flashback for our mc, always a good idea. Might suggest saving it for later, though. To, I dunno, explain a plot device at the apropriate moment, or segue out a of tense moment, or somesuch.

Fighting: Intuition has no training or ability and has the raw combat ability of a child.
Agility: His dexterity and accuracy are on the level of Cyclops.
Strength: He is about as strong as Sue Storm or Doctor Strange.
Endurance: He is as tough and resistant as someone who moderately exercises.
Reason: Used for intelligence and logical thought, Id can fix a car, but not repair anything as sophisticated as himself.
Intuition: Wisdom, wits, commons sense, and battle reflexes, Id senses like Daredevil or Wolverine.
Psyche: Mental Strength and willpower, Id’s is excellent, like Beast.

So,
Agility is like Dexterity
Endurance is like Constitution
Reason is like Intelligence
Intuition is like Wisdom
Psyche is like Willpower and used for Mysticism

Hello there, Marvin.

>I hope he's a good business man too. We need to make Vibrant Tech Great Again
He actually is, historically.
Since the death of his friend, and head of R&D, he's made some questionable decisions by going all in and balls deep into developing the Vibrant suit.
The company made very little gains in the last year as well as lost a very public deal and significant client and consumer confidence.

>>2108646
There is also the interesting interplay of Beholder slowly losing her self, while Id gains (earns?) his.
And, if it wasn't clear, seeing how Orphan didn't make it past the primaries, I'm backing Intuition Drive as well. (>>2099409)
>>
If the vote is still going on then I'm for Intuition
>>
>>2110288
>I got the impression of early 20s from the initial intro.
This was probably due to my deep characterization of the, literally in one case, faceless mob guys.

Actually, pinning down an exact timeline is tough and I make it worse by leaning towards comic book conventions of every era tempered with common sense.
Like in Payback where the time is hard to place, rotary carphone and all.

The quest is set in a retooled adaptation of the Marvel Universe from roughly the mid-nineties, that takes place in 2018ish.
Basically, I want as many as the Marvel Characters to be around as possible, in my subjective opinion of their default state.

And unless I counted you twice, which I can check better later, I think the vote might now be at
Vibrant 16
Intuition 16

And still going...
At this point, I might have to run a quest with two main characters in, at least at first, separate storylines.
Has that been done before?
Has it been done well?
>>
>>2110465
Do it.
>>
>>2110465
Yes, someone ran a Monster Hearts Quest with two MCs, one on /tg/ the other anonkun. Both quests were ran at the same time and constantly interacted with each other.
>>
>>2110465
To my memory? No. It probably has though. Though if it we're to be done I think it'd be more of a literary format, like a book. Kind of like writing a pair of characters like twins or siblings.

Definitely doable just odd in this limited format, though I feel it would be worth it. Options would have to be expanded definitely since twice the characters = twice the action.

The more I think about it the more >>2110470 makes sense. Two people in the same setting running different characters on different sites that interact with each in universe. Like a more sophisticated Skype call. Actually I proposed that once in the general or Discord it's been a while that some
>>
>>2110480
fuckin piece of shit tab button making me post early

one co-authors a quest. Like group writing a book almost, just a lot more interconnected.

I say go for it man if you have someone to run the thing on akun. It's up to you though, cause even if you don't the alternative is to just make the non-selected character a prominent interaction in the MCs story.

Like I said though, up to you.
>>
>>2110465
Just make it a booster gold/blue beetle kind of relationship

>Well you could have the two meet early on, maybe even in intro post, give them an shared interest to start things up, then treat them as party members when together and switch perspectives when not, and see where Anon takes either of them...

The administrator was getting nervous.
He was young, possibly an intern, born in Japan but spoke flawless English.
He had likely been told not to speak or interrupt you, but you barely moved and had not spoken the entire time since you had entered this horrific room.
This was doubtlessly causing the tension you felt.
This test with an actual crime scene was your final trial before Asano Robotics would allow you to engage in real fieldwork.
Your predecessor and competitor, the Crime Scene Analyst Robot was nearly finished with its tasks, bustling about, tracking blood splatter and other such things to tell the story of what happened.
It was a story you knew the moment you stepped into the room: a slight figure had briefly struggled with the large dead man on the floor, although he bore no defensive wounds or abrasions on his knuckles, and the other figure had shot and killed him.
You knew this, but you remained because one thing still bothered you.

The report had said that the man’s wife called the police moments later and reported seeing a small, dark skinned man in a purple hoodie fleeing their home.
The police were nearby, arrived on the scene immediately, and had caught a man fitting that description, a violent career criminal once arrested for attempted murder.
It seemed quite a neat case aside from the lack of the weapon.
The police had searched inside and out, but not had found it.
You had suspected a simple case of human error, but you had not been able to locate the gun either.
The apparent options were that the shooter was an expert in hiding murder weapons but no other aspect of crime, or else something had been missed.

You had eliminated any possibility that gun had been overlooked.
It was time.
You turned to the administrator and announced that you could not proceed with the trial without speaking to both the wife and the suspect.
Startled, the administrator pauses before responding only to again be interrupted by the Crime Scene Analyst Robot making its announcement and declaration precisely describing what you had already determined.

"Are you- are you saying that you cannot complete the test?"
"Not at all."
you replied, "I'm merely stating that I need additional information.
The C.S.A.R. is correct, in that the suspect fits the guilty party.
But it is unaware of additional information that can only be confirmed through speaking with both the wife and the suspect."
"Well they are both at the police station still..."
As he is thinking considering your request, you examine the man once again.
Despite his youth and inexperience, his company suit projects the exact sort of capable professional that it is intended to.
A man in a sharp suit is often trusted and believed more than a man poorly dressed.
Thinking for a moment, you look down at your sleek metallic endoskeleton and your glistening omnium nanite flesh and consider yourself.
"If you do honor my request to speak with them, might I make another request?"

You step into the area of the police precinct and find yourself smoothing the lines of your new company suit.
It seems to be an unnecessary emotional response, how odd.

The policeman in front of you explains that the suspect is being held in interrogation room 2 while the wife is waiting in interrogation room 3.
Looking in, you see the suspect in the purple hoodiestraining against his cuffs while arguing with the police officer inside the room guarding him.
The woman sits alone, at her request, and is obviously distraught with tears staining her face and clutching her purse to her chest. The administrator turns to you and asks you who you wish to speak to first.

You step into the room with the wife.
She had been informed a new form of crime solving robot was going to speak with her, but she still was startled by your appearance.
You hoped the suit helped.

Ma'am? I am deeply sorry for your pain.
I understand what a trying situation this is for you."

Sitting down across from her, you do understand.
Her makeup does a fine job of covering her bruises even despite the tears.

"I don't want to trouble you. I can see that you have an ordeal ahead of, even as your last one ended."
The guilt that flashed across her eyes is confirmation enough.

"I only have one question for you:"

>"Will you please empty your purse on the table?" Stand and look at the administrator with pride.
>"Do you feel any safer, now that you have finally ended his abuse?" Extend you hand in compassion.
>"Do you want to go home now?" Entreat them to let her go, do not inform them of her guilt, and fail the test in sacrifice.

You gently squeeze her hand in response.
After a few respectful moments, you ask her if she feels up to speaking with an officer to change her statement.
Releasing your hand, she wipes her tears away and nods.

Turning to the administrator, who now closes his mouth that was still open in shock, you ask him to go out of the room to fetch someone to take her statement.
He gets as far as the door when a thunderous crash stops him in his tracks.
You quickly stand up.

"This is going to be bad-"

Your words of caution are interrupted by the man in the purple hoodie smashing through the cinderblock wall!
The administrator is frozen in shock and fear.

Searching for anything beyond anger within the man as you pull the trigger, your intuition says he is just angry.

The energy weapon slammed into the attacker at full charge!
Shaking and writhing from the blast, he drops to his knees...
and collapsed unconscious on the floor.

As the administrator rushes for help, you rush to see to the woman, who is visibly shaken but unharmed.

The intuition was barely successful, by the way. I hadn't planned on that battle being long, but you guys made quick work of it.

The woman was saved and sang your praises to all the police officers as she gave her statements.
The man was arrested and taken to metahuman detainment for interrogation.
You were taken back to Asano Robotics and the administrator detailed his full report to the chief executives.

They were mildly displeased with your unauthorized use of the weapon, but were overall extremely pleased with your performance.

Afterwards they are speaking to the administrator alone while you step out to the waiting area overlooking the impressive and beautifully decorated glass and steel architecture extending down to the lobby below.

Gazing at the beauty that humanity can forge with simple steel and sand, you hope that you to can excel as well in the world.

The administrator eventually emerged looking thoroughly chastised.
"I do hope they were forgiving of you for letting me take your weapon."
"Oh this?" he said, tapping the weapon in his holster and looking at it sadly. "Yes. Yes, they were firm but just."

A stray thought passed through your mind.
"Oh, what will happen to that C.S.A.R. unit now that I am going to go into the field?"
"Ah, don't worry, *it* will be around for a long while. That line is fully tested."

Smiling, he ushered you into the glass elevator. "Do not worry. I will take care of you."

As you writhe in pain, the full meaning of his words hits you.
There is a spot, just below your chest where a human stomach would be, that your nanites cluster and reproduce.
The nanites there squirm and writh even more as you realize that, as a prototype, you would now be dismantled and reexamined for further reproduction.

They were going to kill you.
And your intuition that you so trust is screaming that it was wrong.

Straining with all your might, you take the pain, you take the current, and you endure.
Then you turn and face your attacker.

Looking directly at the man, you step very close and stare into his eyes and ask him in a weak voice, "How long have you known that they were going to kill me?"
Scoffing, he remarks, "You should have figured it out long ago. If you were so damned intuitive, shouldn't you know already?"

"Oh I did." You say, quickly stepping past him out of the elevator, "I just needed to take your gun again."
You grip the gun and tear it from his hand.

Filled with a sense of justice, poetic or otherwise, you fire your new weapon into the bastard.
The blast knocks him back into the elevator, which closes and begins to descend.

Turning and running at full speed, you make for the stairs.
Halfway down, alarms begin sounding.
When you hear lower doors in the stairwell opening, your intuition tells you to take a different path.

You dart out of the stairwell and hear the electric seals lock down the doors.
Running through an office full of cubicles, you startle everyone by barely pausing in your run to snatch a chair and hurl it with all your strength against the window.

The chair bounces off the glass, cracking it.
Throwing yourself forward, you shield yourself from the impact with nanite shielded arms and plunge through.

Showing your bravery, you fall several stories, your nanites taking the brunt of the impact as you roll over the asphalt.
Quickly, you disappear into an alleyway.

Later, watching from a safe distance, you see paramedics escorting your former administrator into the back of an ambulance.
He seems in fine condition, but utterly shaken.

Turning your back on your former owners, you look up at the oncoming clouds.
A storm was coming.

Marvel Quest Presents: Vibrant First Step

Vincent Walken felt the vibrations throughout his body as he directed the sonic emitters in each of his palms towards each other.
The vibrations were mildler than he had imagined.

He adjusted them to the right frequency and, suddenly, the test lab winked into darkness and then flooded back into light.
Only he wasn't looking at his lab anymore.
It was a success.
He was standing on another world.

He had speculated about the source of the radiation that had killed his friend many times.
It could be a result of the transit.
It could be a number of things.
The sight that he beheld left little doubt in his mind, and it was less than ideal.

Nuclear Winter was the bad news.
And as far as bad news goes, that's pretty bad news.

The good news was that the radition he was detecting was much, much less than what would have been necessary to kill his friend.

After a moment's thought, he decided that was worse news.
That meant that this was not the same location, despite him having recreated the experiment exactly.
This was going to take some practice.

Nearly slipping on the snow, he explored the ruins before him.
He saw a number of skeletons and decayed corpses, but for a while could not find anything that could tell him what had happened here, or anything useful really.
Then he saw the impossible.

He saw an arm struggling and clawing from underneath a pile of rubble that obviously hadn't moved in ages.
Cautiously, he approached the repetitively clawing arm, which looked skeletal as he approached.

Ignoring his irrational fear, he examined it as a scientist, and was amazed.
>>
>>2111446
Shit fuck. We found the vampire dimension didn't we?
>>
>>2111446
The arm was robotic.
It was clearly part of a humanoid robot that had been crushed underneath the rubble and was now caught in some feedback loop.
The arm would likely keep clawing until the battery ran out.

The amazing thing was that the actuators in the arm.
They were like nothing he had ever seen or even heard of.
Vincent was hardly a robotics expert, but he figured that the elbow of the arm alone could advance robotic science.

Unfortunately, the rest of the robot was firmly under rubble that he couldn't even budge.

He had several ideas:

>Use the sonic emitters to blast away the rubble. Dangerous, might damage the arm, and might not work, but he might find more impressive science.

>Use the sonic emitters to break off the arm above the elbow. Safer, less risk to the arm, but would have to leave the rest of the robot.

>Use his engineering skill to take apart the arm. Safest, slowest, and he might not have time to find anything else.

You power up the emitters and release a controled blast against the rubble, rocking it backwards without damaging the arm.

...and then the rubble rocked back and crushed it completely.

Frustrated, you take a stale breath and reexamine the robot as the echo of your blast cascades through the ruins.
It actually worked, the chest of the robot is now clear and you can see the power supply exposed inside.

Although you can't understand it quite yet, you are able to detached and remove the power supply, which appears to be a softly glowing orange rectangle.
As you detach the arm, you hear an eerie howling through the snow.

The howl is joined by several others.

You find a sturdy two story building and take a position near the stairs by a window facing the rubble.

From your position, you can see massive shapes moving in the snow.
Suddenly, one springs forward and dashes to the rubble.

It looks like a giant white wolf twice the size of a man only its fur is mottled with large patches missing and strange bulges in its flesh and there is something strange about its back legs.
As five others join the first one, it's clear that they are not healthy and are suffering terrible effects of radiation poisoning, despite their healthy size.

One of them has one eye rotted out, but is sniffing the ground closely.
It is following the path you took and is tracking you quickly.

Then he stands up and you realize the back legs were human.
It looks up at the building you are in and howls a strangled sickly roar:

The beast turns and rears back to leap forward.
Wrenching hard, you tear the hands free from the arms, shove the mess in your satchel and clise yours eyes as you desperately try to shift home.

After you are not pierced by the claws, you open your eyes and find yourself safely back in the test lab, although you are quite a distance from where you had begun.

You made it.
You survived and made it back with several pieces of exotic hardware.

It walked towards the first site, holding up a scanner to the area.
Then it walked to the second site, near the burnt pod, and took additional readings.

Snow crunched as the six Wendigo surrounded and closed in.
They howled and leaped forward.

With a quick turn of their head, the figure immolated the six Wendigo, leaving nothing but ash after a few moments.
Having collected the data they came for, the figure lifted into the sky, and flew off.

How drastic are we talking here? Kill the original and make MC out of a newer model, or one from an alternate reality?
Because it's a bit worrying if all it takes is two bad rolls in a row without having done something exceptionally stupid or outright suicidal to kill off a character, although obviously from the narrative perspective it makes sense given the position the robot was in.

In any case, cheers for the thread OP!

More like, instead of righteously escaping an evil corporation through cleverness, intuition, and bravery, he would have been put in a position to where he had to violently escape through destruction, blood, and possibly (justifiable)killing employees that fear their employers.

>Because it's a bit worrying if all it takes is two bad rolls in a row without having done something exceptionally stupid or outright suicidal
No.
There's usually something in your bag of tricks to pull out to help.
And if I had plotted the possibilities more carefully in advance, like I plan to, I might have seen other options.
Like, I could have gone with the "sympathetic scientist" cliché as a deus ex machina.

I had to call it.
It's been great having everyone so invested though.

If it makes you feel better, I will be starting with Vibrant as the top billed costar.
>>

Oh hey, Marvin.

I was going to ask the Vibrant fans if they were interested in discussing or planning his next moves they could feel free to do it here.
I have a direction I can start him in, but I'd like his corporate triumphs to to be as player-originated as possible.

What should Vincent Walken do with the actuators, power source, or controls he found?
Company R&D?
Privately tinker with them?
Sell them?
Keep them to himself and cannibalize them for his suit?
Make a craft project?
>>
>>2113323
Also, What should his first goals be?
More exploration?
Practicing the use of his suit?
Capitalizing on the tech he has?
Ensuring safer travel?
Developing wendigo repellent?
>>
>>2113323
I’d say take some pictures, 3D models and scanner readings of them to take a look at privately and hand the real thing over to R&D.

>>2113325
Given the situation he jumped into, perhaps some practice in use of the suit would be in order. He could also personally oversee or participate in the R&D
>>
Also what is our relationship with our employees? Distant? Professional? Familial? Friendly? Tyrannical? Do we consider them a means to end and only put up a facade to keep atmosphere good, or do we genuinely care for them?

Do they treat us with atreides tier loyalty, treat their job as means to pay the bills or outright hate our guts for being strict/take advantage of being soft?

Also how deep shit are we in financially? Might want to rush some moneymaker projects if it’s too bad.

These are great questions:
>Also what is our relationship with our employees? Distant? Professional? Familial? Friendly? Tyrannical?
I can just say that your corporation is large enough that most of your employees would never have met you unless you've specifically mad an effort to reach out to them.

>Do we consider them a means to end and only put up a facade to keep atmosphere good, or do we genuinely care for them?
Great question for the players.

>Do they treat us with atreides tier loyalty, treat their job as means to pay the bills or outright hate our guts for being strict/take advantage of being soft?
I can tell you that your new head of R&D was fully and thoroughly vetted, loyal, and is one of only a few aware of your private lab.

>Also how deep shit are we in financially?
You're not too terrible.
Vibrant Technologies' reputation took the largest hit when it failed to land the space contract and failed to follow up with any strong reassuring advancements.
You've made no new progress, no new contracts, offered no new direction, and sunk whatever profits the company made in the last year back into R&D with nothing to show for it.
It looks bad.
But you've made stellar products in the past and your company is still coasting on its previous successes, for now.

In short, you're not sinking yet, but your stock prices are.

Alright, seems like while we do our prospector-planeswalker thing, having our immediate objective accomplished, we'll need to roll out some new stuff and improve on the old.

>look into current government tender offers
>make new iterations of existing product lines (what are we doing except for weapons? industrial tools? Consumer sound devices?
>come up with something new like a sonic screwdriver or wendigo (robot?) plushies

also did we buy all the intellectual property around the suit or just the suit itself (and are at least formally dependant on the other guys for servicing and upgrades)?
'cause if it's the former we could presumably come up with our own line of vibrant industrial exosuits...

>did we buy all the intellectual property around the suit
The suit, and just the one suit, was purchased for use in "product testing".
Under the purchase agreement, reverse engineering the suit is allowed, but any reproduction of the suit for commercial benefit would cost exorbitant licencing fees.
Basically, we can use it, take it apart, and examine it, but if we try to sell a suit derived from it, Roxxon would net the profits.

Our guys can repair, service, and upgrade the one suit, though.

Just to be clear, and because I already typed it before rereading your question:
The vibration array is a prototype developed by your former head of R&D exclusively for Vibrant Technologies.
It is wholly owned by the company and kept secret at your discretion.

>what are we doing except for weapons? The suit was never intended as a weapon, but rather an experimental form of transport intended to be adapted to enable FTL travel for S.W.O.R.D..

>industrial tools? Consumer sound devices?
Mostly industrial tools. But some consumer sound systems. More for concerts than living rooms.

>wendigo (robot?) plushies
heh

I'm a fan of
>Keep them to himself and cannibalize them for his suit?
Cause i like the idea of having our suit slowly become a cluttered Frankenstein suit.
>>
>>2113325
I'd say a mix of 1 getting his investors back and 2 finding practical uses for the suit and ways it could improve his company. Think of the shit you could do with teleportation technology. Immediate travel to any place on earth, sending objects from one place to another instantly. It basically eliminates any sort of shipping company, making US the ones people turn to to move goods and products!

Also,
>>2113773
>not streamlining the suit's design
>not making a better suit with each iteration
>not reaching the logical trans-humanist conclusion that you need to BECOME the suit

Do you even play human?
>>
>>2113783
But i like the concept of playing the risk of rain character. Collecting stuff from other worlds and duck taping them to our suit so we can scavenge and kill better.

The suit is for our personal shenanigans, not commercial use. Ours is the planeshift vibrator, which we should work to master our control over so we don’t have to play lottery every time we activate it... some finer control over the sonic disrupters would be nice too so we can use them for cutting and excavation, not just blasting.

The Guardians would be pretty cool.

I still plan on running that Orphan vignette sometime, maybe at the end of the next quest in the next thread.
Which I'll start next week.
I'll announce the day once I nail down my schedule.
3pm EST (8pm UTC) seemed to work out okay with the vignettes, so I'll likely run at the same time.

>OP, make sure to archive the thread here if you start a new one.
The first issue is bagged in Mylar.

Barring disaster, I expect to run again on Saturday 3pm EST (8pm UTC)
