You are Kusajishi Riku, and you weren't always where you are today. When you first found yourself in the afterlife you had no memories, no possessions, and no purpose beyond surviving each day to see the next. Unlike the other souls around you starvation was not just possible but likely due to the unusual amount of spiritual power your body possessed, forcing you to steal and cheat to scratch out a living. That changed when Shihōin Yoruichi, the same high-ranking shinigami who was obliged to kill you in the first place, found and recruited you.

Fast-tracked through training due to your instinctive grasp of combat techniques, a “gift” of sorts from your previous life as a quincy, you rose to the position of Lieutenant in the Second Division of the Seireitei's prestigious Court Guard. You made friends and forged alliances over those ninety years, honed and expanded your skills at a rate others might call prodigious but which felt natural at the time, and even adopted two kids from a similar situation to when Yoruichi found you. About a hundred years ago things took another unexpected turn, when you were unwittingly caught in the machinations of Captain Aizen Sōsuke. His experiments not only led to the banishment of several Captains and Lieutenants, one of whom you replaced as Captain the next day, but they also set off a chain of events that would finally reveal to you what you are.

It took almost fifty years to work out what to do with your “inner hollow” Rosa, the shattered memories and rage from your previous life which were cast off to preserve your soul soon after you died, and eventually you bullied a member of the Royal Guard into letting you forge that personality and the powers it grants you into a second zanpakuto. Your original zanpakuto Tenkotsuki was an even more unusual complication: the remains of a dead goddess, an aspect of Inari who went by the name Tamamo no Mae during her short time in the world of the living. She had cut a deal with you long ago, accepting and swiftly replacing your sacred pride as a quincy in exchange for easing your passage into the afterlife.

Secrecy was key in your rise to power, the ability to hide what you really were from all but a few select individuals whom you trusted. Among those were your immediate subordinates whose loyalty you spent a hundred years securing as Captain, Yoruichi whom you would eventually marry in secret and who you helped to forge a second zanpakuto like your own, and even a small cadre of menos grande who endured the painful process of becoming arrancar with your help.

But when Aizen finally decided to make his long-awaited move against the Seireitei his own skills proved troublesome, and he escaped back to his own army of centuries-old quincy and arrancars. That left you and your fellow Captains to deal with what felt like an endless stream of rebellions and probing attacks as Aizen no doubt made his final preparations.

If he thought that would give him an advantage he's sorely mistaken: several of your own Captains have recently returned from training under the powerful members of the Royal Guard, and you even managed to get in some training of your own to improve your already considerable skills between the invasions and battles.

And now it's just a matter of time before Aizen gives you and the Gotei 13 something to respond to.

Your alarm goes off at seven sharp, showing your slightly aching head no mercy. But you can't really be mad, not when it's set to play Cat Stevens like this. So even despite the headache, you somehow find yourself singing along... and despite still being half-asleep Yoruichi manages to join in and mutter the words into the pillow next to you.

“Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry. Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy...” you sing together, Yoruichi slowly coming around. “Morning.”

“Yeah, it is,” Yoruichi agrees with a yawn. “Reckon we should be on call for a Captains' meeting?”

You glance across the room at your two haoris, hanging from hooks on the back of the door side by side. “Probably. Even as drunk as Shunsui was last night we've got the whole roster together again. He'll want to get us all together in an official capacity, won't he?”

“I wish we had more time,” Yoruichi says with a sigh, rolling over onto her back.

“Doesn't everyone?” you muse.

“If a family can't sit down to breakfast together,” you grumble, “then what are we fighting for, exactly?”

“Other families, I guess,” Yoruichi muses, scooting her way out from under the comforter and crossing the room to pick her things up from the back of a nearby chair. “But I get your point. Hey, these have been washed.”

“Probably Tenri's doing,” you sigh, noticing that your own clothing has been neatly folded and left on the tatami at the foot of your mattress. “I'm not actually sure she needs more than about two hours of sleep or so a night.”

“She must get bored,” Yoruichi nods, though her tone certainly betrays no shortage of gratitude for your bizarre assistant's efforts. “My only question is when.”

“Probably just a few hours ago,” you shake your head. “I get why she did it, but I'm gonna ask her to wait until we're awake next time.”

Yoruichi chuckles as she stretches her shoulders, then pulls on her hakama and ties them off around her waist. “I must've been tired if I didn't wake up for that.”

Still reluctant to put on the official outerwear of your respective offices just yet, you and Yoruichi both end up carrying your haori downstairs and draping them over the chairs at the kitchen table, at which point your wife starts rummaging through the small refrigerator for likely ingredients.

“Tenri,” you call the lesser divinity's attention as you go through the motions of starting the rice cooker and making tea. “Any news this morning?”

“None which has come to my attention, ma'am,” the woman replies with a bow, her solid-colored eyes disappearing for a moment during the gesture. “I see you have found the laundry I left for you and your wife. Is it acceptable?”

“Fine,” you nod, “but next time... might be better to wait, even if an early morning meeting seems likely.”

“Speaking of,” Yoruichi adds, cracking a few eggs into a wide pan, “how'd you sneak in like that?”

“I paused any time I heard an irregularity in your breathing or heart rates that could indicate that you were waking,” Tenri explains with another bow. “I do pride myself on my senses, if you will recall.”

“Impressive,” you nod. “You'd make a hell of an assassin, if you don't mind me saying.”

“Had I any respectable amount of power, perhaps,” Tenri replies calmly. “But for doing domestic work unseen, my present level of power is irrelevant.”

>“Had I any respectable amount of power, perhaps,” Tenri replies calmly. “But for doing domestic work unseen, my present level of power is irrelevant.”
She would make a Hell of a saboteur and spy. The only problem is the infiltration and exfiltration. If she could nail those down she'd be a one of the best spies to exist.
>>
>>2098661
“Can't imagine I made that easy on you,” Yoruichi muses as she mixes some bacon in with the eggs. “But thanks for your efforts.”

“I did spend far more time standing still and holding my breath than anything else,” Tenri admits. “And you are most welcome.”

Breakfast, as it turns out, is a bit of a monstrosity in culinary terms: fried rice, but with a distinctly “American breakfast” twist to it. The flavors are fine though, and as expected of Yoruichi's cooking every technical detail in its preparation is precisely as it should be from texture to temperature. It reminds you a little of something people eat in your former home of Okinawa these days called “taco rice”, at least in so far as it consists of an American-style dish over rice and that it seems to work far better than you'd expect it to.

Needless to say it doesn't take long to demolish, leaving the plates practically spotless even before they're washed.

“That really hit the spot,” you sigh. “Perfect for a hangover breakfast.”

Your wife rolls her eyes. “As intended of course, did you really expect less from me?”

“Of course not,” you smile. “I know better than to doubt.”

“Yoruichi?”

“Hm?”

“I'm going to go speak with Tia and Bambi,” you declare, “see what we can do about getting their respective... groups directly involved. Would you mind letting Shunsui know to expect them?”

“Sure, not a problem,” your wife nods in agreement. “I have some other preparations to make anyway, so I'll see you later, okay?”

“Yeah,” you quickly agree, swiftly rinsing your dishes and leaving them to dry. “Hold things down here, Tenri. I may not be back until late, so any messages or paperwork can just go on my desk until I have the time.”

“Understood, ma'am,” Tenri bows. “Have a pleasant day.”

“Yeah, same to you,” you incline your head in return.

You quietly think things over as you walk out of the inner courtyard where your Division's top seated officers all reside and into the Division's grounds at large. Your arrancar comrades will likely play a significant role in the coming battle, and represent an incredible fighting force in their own right... but Bambietta is alone, with only two of her fellow Sternritter in any shape to be up and about. You have to admit you're not sure how Candice and Liltotto are even doing after their time in captivity and their recent recovery

You quickly track down Halibel, who appears to be having a late breakfast with her three constant companions. Based on the fact that you can actually see her full face you think they're still eating. She motions for you to sit and join them, but you shake your head quietly.

“Sorry, but today's going to be busy,” you apologize, honestly wishing you could afford to take it slow for the rest of the morning. “We're anticipating a Captains' meeting today now that the other Captains are back from training, and I thought it'd be good to have arrancar and quincy representatives.”

Halibel nods quietly. “That seems prudent.”

“So, would you like to go?”

Halibel considers your question for a moment. “Would someone else do?”

You raise an eyebrow. “Did you have someone in mind?”

“I'd be honored to represent us,” Apacci nods in agreement with an unstated suggestion.

“Hang on!” Sung-Sun and Mila Rose protest, glaring sharply at each other as they silently vie for the right to continue.

“Who says you're the one Lady Halibel's talking about?” Mila Rose demands.

Sung-Sun takes a different issue with Apacci. “If anything, I would expect Lady Halibel to send Starrk.”

“What, the guy who's asleep ninety percent of the time?” Apacci scoffs. “Yeah right, he'd probably knock out in front of the Captains and have to be kicked awake.”

“And you're any better?” Mila Rose presses. “What, do you plan on bringing back notes or somethin? You're barely even literate!”

“Just because I like books with pictures in 'em doesn't mean I can't read, you ignorant cow!”

Halibel spares you a sidelong glance as another argument breaks out.

“Nothing wrong with doodles, Mila Rose,” you shrug. “They seem to work for Kuchiki, even if all she ever draws are rabbits for some reason.”

“I can't tell if you're taking my side or not,” Apacci grumbles.

You simply gesture to Halibel. “I take it you have your own thoughts?”

Halibel nods quietly. “Neliel.”

Apacci blinks, quietly stunned by the single word declaration. “I'm sorry, what?”

“She could use a show of trust,” Halibel admits quietly, by way of explanation to her juniors. “I fear my harshness may have been... misinterpreted.”

“How so?” you ask, your tone one of caution.

“I sense that she is... a caring person,” your friend explains carefully. “She allowed that to make her soft.”

“Where it makes you grow fiercer when pressed,” you realize aloud. “You were treating it as a chance to show by example.”

Halibel nods quietly. “However, my harshness may have been interpreted as malice.”

“And so you want to show that you do trust her,” you summarize.

“Precisely,” Halibel confirms. “She is a kindred spirit of sorts, whom I wish to help if I can.”

>Okay, if you're sure about this I'll let her know you put her name forward.

You elect to find Bambietta before informing Neliel of Halibel's decision, with the idea that if push comes to shove dragging Neliel out without explaining the situation would be something you could do on your way to the First Division barracks. When you find her in the mess hall Bambietta is helping her companions clean dishes from their own breakfast mess. Bambi passes things to Liltotto, who scrapes any leftovers into her unhinged jaw and straight down her gullet before rinsing them and passing them off to Candice to dry. Candice for her part tries not to watch too closely.

“I see you three have a system,” you muse as the last of the dishes settle into a nearby drying rack.

“It works for me,” Liltotto agrees. “Though the frustrating thing is I'll just be hungry a few hours from now.”

“Just try not to eat the benches or anything, Lil,” Candice jokes, “don't think our hosts would like it.”

“I'd have to explain that in my requisition forms,” you muse, “so... yeah, I'd probably be pretty cross.”

“I take it you're not here for breakfast?” Bambietta guesses. “What's up?”

“I want one of you to come to the Captains' meeting that Kyōraku's going to call...” you begin, just as an orderly passes you a small handwritten note. “Right now, actually. Kinda surprised he's conscious.”

“It was Lieutenant Ise's doing,” the orderly explains.

“That'd do it. Thanks.”

“Lil,” Bambi replies calmly, “you go.”

“Why me?” Liltotto asks skeptically. “Don't tell me you're so damn lazy you're pawning off your responsibilities.”

“I want you to interact with the other Captains,” Bambi explains. “Get some experience with them, then bring us back the details. We all know that Candi gets bored too easily to sit through a meeting.”

“Truth,” Candice agrees, nodding sagely.

“Don't lie, you just don't want to go either!” the short sternritter accuses.

“Also truth,” Candice agrees again, “but Bambi asked you, asshole.”

“Fine...” Liltotto sighs, throwing her hands up in defeat. “I'll go and play nice for a while.”

You can hear the water running from outside the quarters which several of the newer arrancar guests in the Ninth's care reside in, and so you carefully sense out Neliel's reiatsu to confirm that she's in the process of showering. Sneaking in you acknowledge not just Menoly, who's cleaning the breakfast dishes, but Yin and Yang as well who seem to have come over to eat. They look at you strangely as you find the apartment's water heater and switch it off.

There's an abrupt yelp from the bathroom as the water goes cold, after which you decide to show mercy and switch the heater back on.

But when you step into the now-quiet wetroom you're greeted by a spray of water to the face, Neliel having put her thumb over the tap hose and quickly turned the water on the moment she saw you.

“Now we're even,” she states simply.

“Fair point,” Rosa observes smugly.

Your response however is to reach out one hand, causing Neliel to stare at you in concern. “Captain...”

“Tenran!” you declare, using a weakened form of the unincanted spell to blast the arrancar back on her feet with another yelp.

“What was that for!” she demands, crossing her arms angrily.

“You're dry now,” you observe as Nel looks down at herself and realizes it herself. “Now if you'd be so kind, pull on some pants and let's go. You're coming with me to a Captains' meeting.”

“A Captains' meeting?” she repeats, pulling the curtain and hurriedly dressing. “Are you sure you wouldn't prefer to take miss Halibel?”

“She suggested I take you instead,” you recount, “and I agreed. It'll be good for you.”

“Alright,” she agrees, stepping out of the shower and grabbing a comb off the small countertop. The hole in her chest disappears as she zips her close-fitting white top. “You've convinced me.”

“Good, because if you disagreed I was gonna haul you off over my shoulder,” you shrug, turning your Tenran trick on yourself. “Come on, we shouldn't keep my peers waiting.”

“We'll need to talk later,” you tell the twins almost as an afterthought, before stepping back outside.

The First Division barracks are as imposing as ever, and you sense that your group is almost the last to show up. Outside the doors you find Rangiku waiting for you, looking like she's only half-awake. Her hair is even kind of a mess.

“Didn't get much sleep?” you ask with a clever wink.

Rangiku sighs. “That's right, why?”

“Way to go, tiger,” you smirk, and your daughter starts to blush quietly as she realizes you've caught her. “Sure took you long enough.”

“Wait, you're...” Rangiku begins, struggling with it a little in a low tone.

“... okay with this?”

You throw your arms around her without hesitation. “Of course not, dummy. If you two are happy then I'm happy, end of story.”

“So... are you happy?”

After a moment you feel her return the embrace. “Of course.”

“There you have it,” you tell her.

The two of you stand there for a while, content to simply share the warm moment between the two of you until you cough. With some hesitation you separate from your daughter.

“Well then, best that we not keep them waiting Lieutenant,” you observe, swallowing your personal emotions for now and resuming your usual attitude. “Shall we?”

“Yes, ma'am,” Rangiku replies, taking a moment to follow your example and clear her head.

Once inside you take your position in the ranks, between Kisuke and Nemu on your right and an empty spot to your left where Kenpachi should be. Rangiku stands to your immediate right, much closer than any of the other Lieutenants who carefully position themselves well behind their respective Captains. Neliel has taken a position to your left, while Liltotto stands to Rangiku's right and a half-pace back. If it weren't for the size of the space things might have started getting crowded around where you're standing.

Komamura looks distinctly displeased about something, while Hitsugaya is unusually pale. Of the Captains only two are absent so far: those being Kenny and oddly enough your wife, the latter of whom you can feel drawing close.

The amount of sheepish eye contact between Hitsugaya and Hinamori is honestly adorable, but at the same time you realize that it isn't your place to tease them over it as neither one of them is your kid. Plus, Gin's probably going to be all over that the second he...

Ah. The way he's smirking at Hitsugaya now probably means he noticed.

So instead of teasing, which would certainly be more fun, you decide to deal with the more serious matter at hand.

“Something troubling you, Captain Komamura?”

As you approach the titan of a wolf-man, he glances down at you. “Your choice in companions today.”

“You've met Rangiku before though...”

You never realized someone with a dog's face could look so clearly unamused.

“Alright, I know,” you sigh. “Last time you were here those two were still dangerous prisoners, but you've been gone a while, Komamura.”

As he opens his mouth to reply Yoruichi comes through the door with Omaeda in tow. “Apologies! I was in the middle of organizing down in the archives when the call went out, so it took a little longer to reach me.”

“That's understandable,” Shunsui nods in agreement... if he's hung over it's hard to tell. “Kenpachi will be a few minutes more.”

“You were saying?” you prompt Komamura quietly.

“People do not change so quickly,” he insists sternly.

“Aizen is our enemy, Komamura,” you insist in a low voice. “Those who are here are not. They were either subjected or were too ill to question their allegiance. But when their circumstances changed and I extended them a hand they took it.”

“And you believe they did so for our benefit?” Komamura presses.

“No,” you respond immediately, “and I don't care. They fight behind and beside us for their own reasons, and that's fine. I want to help them reach their goals and I have faith that they'll help us reach ours in kind, and at every turn my faith in them has been rewarded. And I strive to make sure they feel the same.”

“That's how friends work, Sajin, in case you've forgotten.”

Komamura's eyes widen, as Toshirō shifts his weight a few feet down the line, the only other Captain who overheard your comments. The giant seems at a loss for words, and behind him Tetsuzaemon glances in another direction to pretend that he didn't hear anything either.

“Friends, is that it?” he finally mutters.

“I'd like to think so.”

“I... thought I had a friend once. But it turned out that I didn't really know him.”

So... that's the root of it all, is it?

“No one ever really knows anyone else,” you admit. “That's why we have trust in the first place.”

When you get right down to it, a friendship is between two people. Both have to reach out to each other, it's mutual trust. Komamura could have done everything right, but if Tōsen doesn't meet him halfway....well. Then canon happens.

Komamura just really needs to learn to reach out again, and hope that this time his faith in others is rewarded.

Kinda feel like, you weren't wrong to trust Tōsen, and trusting him was a mistake, is mutually exclusive.

I don't think Komamura made a mistake. Given his circumstances, being Tōsen's friend was a good decision, given his limited information.

I can get the sentiment of forgiving himself, but I feel like the, "trusting Tōsen was a mistake," is a bad sentiment to go forward with. At the time, there wasn't a reason to distrust Tōsen, and even if there was, it'd have been a reason to try and help Tōsen out of his own vengeful nature.

You sigh, thinking your words through carefully. “You weren't wrong, Sajin. But a friendship involves two people. You can be as open and trusting as you want, but if the other person doesn't meet you halfway that's on them.”

“You shouldn't hold it against yourself that Tōsen turned out not to be the man you thought he was. No one else does.”

“Thank you,” Sajin nods respectfully. “This has weighed heavily on my heart, particularly since the head... since Captain Yamamoto's passing.”

“I will think carefully about what you have said... because there is certainly reason in it. But it may take time, the wound is still rather fresh.”

“That's understandable,” you nod. “I'm just happy you feel like it helped, even a little.”

“Maybe some day I will even be able to return the friendship you have shown me,” he nods. “Kenpachi has arrived.”

Sure enough the current Kenpachi strolls through the doors like he's not even late, and takes up his position without a word of explanation.

“Captain Kusajishi, if you will?” Shunsui announces wearily.

“Of course, sir,” you respond with a formal, almost stiff tone that seems to catch a few people in the room off guard. You quickly return to your position, allowing Shunsui to continue.

“So, thanks for paying attention to my Lieutenant's summons,” he announces... you thought as much. “To begin I'd like to welcome back our Captains, who have been hard at work training with the Royal Guard, and also to our two unfamiliar guests.”

“Captain Kusajishi, if you would be so kind?”

“The short one's Liltotto Lamperd, a former Sternritter under Aizen's command,” you introduce with a wave of your hand.

“Sup,” Liltotto grumbles, not particularly impressed by the formality of the occasion.

“And the busty one's Neliel tu Odelschwank, an arrancar also formerly in Aizen's employ,” you continue, causing Nel to puff her cheeks at your introduction of her as simply 'the busty one'. But she manages to keep silent in spite of her indignation.

“Some of you have already met her.”
>1/2
>>
>>2099861
“Well, I for one welcome the new faces!” Shunsui smiles. And not at all because of Nel's rack, you'd bet. “Now then, on to the business at hand, which is catching you all up to speed on the war efforts.”

First of all, Shunsui begins by describing the battles that have taken place while Captains Komamura, Fēng, Hitsugaya, and Zaraki were all off training. Despite their obvious dismay at how busy things were in their absence they remain silent... and are eventually passed full dossiers on the losses sustained by their respective Divisions during that time. Kenpachi doesn't seem too bothered, and Komamura's Division got off almost without a single casualty, but Fēng looks bothered and Hitsugaya seems absolutely appalled.

Neither of their Divisions lost many shinigami... they just seem to be taking it hard. And you can't blame them for that.

“Well, with that unfortunate business dealt with, we've also been doing some preparations.”

“Such as?” Sui Fēng asks, passing her dossier off to Shūhei behind her.

“Captain Shiba,” you speak up, leaning to peer down the line at your sister. “I heard you were working on something special?”

“I was!” she replies cheerfully. “I figured that Kyōka Suigetsu was actually one of the biggest problems to solve... because how can we win a war if we can't trust anything we see or hear? You and Captains Shihōin and Ichimaru can't be everywhere at once.”

“Why me again?” Gin asks, pointing at himself. “I can't sense reiatsu that well, y'know.”

“Yeah, but you're the most familiar with the weapon's limitations,” Kaoru counters. “Would you debate that point?”

“Go on,” Gin sighs, defeated.

“Well, I did some digging through my notes and Tessai's old folios, looking for a way to stop a shinigami from releasing their zanpakuto using kidō.”

“And the results?” Unohana presses politely.

“Nothing,” Kaoru admits. “Aside from a trick the Shihōin teach their clan heads which can delay drawing a sword, which does not necessarily mean it can't be released so long as a change in shape or size isn't involved.”

“And if Aizen draws his sword even that's useless,” Yoruichi adds with an understanding nod. “But I take it you didn't take no for an answer?”

“You're right,” Kaoru agrees. “I did work out an answer. If you can't stop something from happening...”

“Then stop time,” you guess, a smile creeping across your face.

Kaoru grins. “Now you're getting it.”

“That kidō is strictly prohibited,” Shunsui points out, scratching his stubble.

“It's also precisely what we need,” Kaoru counters. “In tandem with my Bankai I could entrap Aizen... Kurotsuchi and Amagai as well if they're close enough together... leaving the rest of us to thin their forces without interference.”

“How long?” you ask her.

“While also maintaining a barrier around myself at all times?” she asks, supplying the most reasonable scenario. “Forty minutes. Every minute past that is a gamble.”

“A gamble?” Unohana asks curiously. “With what stakes?”

“The chance that it could abruptly fail,” your sister explains, “dumping Aizen and whoever else I trapped in that space back out into our time stream.”

“Then we'll have to finish before then,” Komamura declares. “Simple enough.”

“Kisuke, will there be any side effects to maintaining the spell that long?” Yoruichi asks.

Kisuke shrugs. “Shouldn't be. But nobody's ever tried, so there's always a small possibility that something unexpected and dramatic could happen.”

“So we can keep Aizen out of the fight long enough to deal with his subordinates,” Hitsugaya reiterates. “But what prevents them from causing massive casualties during that time, and what does our order of battle need to look like?”

“We'll need someone who hasn't seen Aizen's shikai in order to spring the trap,” Sui Fēng observes. “Who falls into that category?”

Yoruichi raises her hand quietly, as do you and Rangiku.

“My Third Seats Kai and Mirai haven't seen it either,” you confirm. “I put some effort into ensuring that much, and as they're not Lieutenants they did not factor into Aizen's plans for his escape. So he would not need to go out of his way to pursue it.”

“As for the plan to protect Karakura town, I think Captain Urahara has something to add?” Shunsui muses, gesturing to Kisuke.

“Well, yeah,” Kisuke nods. “Together with Captain Shiba I've designed a means to translocate all of Karakura town and replace it with an empty parcel of land out in the Rukongai.”

“You what now?” Little Bee asks in disbelief. “I apologize, I must be tired from my training because I thought I heard you say something that is quite obviously impossible.”

“Not impossible,” Kisuke corrects her, “simply difficult to control. But with the amount of reishi involved and the use of tools available to us in the Seireitei it should be possible to create a convincing facsimile of Karakura town.”

“What would the 'catch' be?” Hitsugaya asks.

“A clever question for such a young Captain,” Unohana muses gently. “I would imagine it could be quite difficult to maintain such a measure even for the forty minutes Captain Shiba can give us.”

“It would involve four large towers,” Kisuke admits, “hidden with kidō, which would serve as... well, to simplify the concept it would serve as an array of amplifiers.”

“Very similar in design to my Bankai,” Kaoru adds, giving you a more concrete example of what Kisuke's talking about.

“You really think that's going to last?” you press quietly. “No system for hiding those pillars is going to hold out for forty minutes.”

“You're correct, of course,” Shunsui agrees, “which is why I intend to position several of our Lieutenant-level fighters to defend them once the ruse is exposed.”

You have a solid enough grasp of military strategy to realize that whoever is leading the arrancar and quincy force that ends up attacking Karakura town won't commit their strongest fighters so quickly, to a relatively minor task: they'll assume the pillars are defended and send their own “Lieutenant-level” fighters to probe those defenses so that their elites will know a little more what to expect. That gives your initial defenders a good chance to reduce the numbers of the opposing force... in naval terms, the cruisers try to return as much information as they can to their own battle line while doing their best to deny the enemy that same information.

“If I may, Captains,” Tetsuzaemon interrupts with a loud voice and a deep bow, “how are those Lieutenants to be chosen?”

“On a volunteer basis, of course,” Shunsui explains. “Make no mistake Lieutenant Iba, this task is unusually high risk. Even for a shinigami it is not the sort of job I would order someone to undertake.”

“If I may, miss Kusajishi,” Neliel mutters quietly over your shoulder. “Would it not be prudent to assign an arrancar to the task of protecting one of these pillars?”

“Captain Kyōraku, a word?” you request. Shunsui quickly nods in agreement.

“I feel that an arrancar should be allowed to defend at least one pillar,” you contend. “The psychological impact would be significant both as a show of unity to our enemies and of trust towards our allies.”

“I would tend to agree,” Unohana offers her own assessment.

“Then make your selection and report back once you've settled on it,” Shunsui decides. “On that subject, would it make sense to have a quincy defend a pillar as well?”

“Liltotto?” you ask.

She takes a moment to consider. “Bambi'd blow up her pillar by mistake, I can't eat hollows without killing myself, and Candi shouldn't fight one of our own.”

“You don't believe she could?” you ask to clarify.

Liltotto shrugs. “She probably could, but it wouldn't be good. Her state of mind's still fragile, killing one of her former comrades would fuck with her mind.”

“Then I'll ask Bambietta about it later,” you decide, before turning to Shunsui. “But for now, I would assume the answer is no.”

“Then we will need three volunteers,” Kisuke informs you. “Our Lieutenants are all present here.”

A few of the Lieutenants seem uncomfortable, but after a moment one steps forward.

“I volunteer,” Shūhei offers calmly, “with my Captain's permission, of course.”

“You have it,” Sui Fēng nods sternly. “But if you get yourself killed in the process, you're the one doing the paperwork for it.”

“How do you figure?” your former Commando demands.

Sui Fēng merely chuckles to herself. “I'm certain someone in the Seireitei has the means at their disposal. So if you don't want to find out, you'll simply have to not die.”

After a few moments, Shūhei nods. “Fine, point taken ma'am.”

“That's two of four,” Shunsui muses. “Anyone else?”

The next to step forward is your sister in law, Miyako. “I volunteer as well, Head Captain. The Thirteenth Division may be without a Captain, but we stand ready to do our part.”

>Lieutenant Shiba, you have nothing to prove to us. Consider what your Division needs of you.
>If I may, Eleventh Division has two exceptional seated officers who could serve the purpose.

Yes. Ikkaku has Bankai and was briefly trained by Riku, who decided that she basically couldn't help him. Yumechikka is a decent fighter who keeps his zanopakuto's true abilities hidden most of the time. Riku hasn't seen him use his real skills in character, but she suspects his kido abilities at least are unusual for a member of the Eleventh Division.

“I object,” you state flatly, causing both of your sisters present to stare at you in surprise. “The Eleventh Division has two seated officers who would no doubt love the opportunity and whose skills are up to par for Lieutenants. I think they would be a fine match for the task.”

“Zaraki, what do you think?” Shunsui asks.

“Hm?” the large Captain grunts. “Oh, that. Probably.”

“Then let us know,” Shunsui nods.

“If I may have a moment,” you interrupt, “Lieutenant Shiba, follow me please? I'd like to speak with you in private.”

As shocked as Miyako still seems, she obeys without complaint and follows you out the large doors at the end of the hall.

“Why did you do that?” she asks, sounding utterly betrayed.

“You're a capable fighter Miyako,” you tell her reassuringly, “and your skills have improved well in the last few weeks. However I don't want you fighting on one of the pillars. I think you would be better suited to remaining in reserve.”

“Why?” she repeats desperately. “My Division needs something like this...”

“Your Division needs a Captain,” you quietly admonish her. “But since you have been denied that, it's your duty to think like a Captain and lead them.”

“My shikai...” she mutters thoughtfully.

You nod in agreement. “Exactly. I have no doubt you'd hold your pillar down if we left you in charge of one, but if we did that you'd be engaged. If we needed you to save an officer in trouble or to create an opening on a dangerous opponent you wouldn't be there.”

“That's why I stepped in when I did.”

“I... thanks,” she mutters. “I understand, Lady Riku.”

“We're family,” you remind her, nudging her shoulder with her fist. “And you've been under a lot of pressure since Ukitake... you know. I just don't want you to feel like you've got anything to prove, you've already done more than anyone could ask.”

No stigma from clans or politics and frankly they'd lean on Shunsui to make them accept or even one of our commandoes who have bankai.
>>
>>2107527
Our commandos have the same issue of being really close to us. It's really awkward for C46 when all the best fighters are either related to us in some way or have been trained by us. Just the idea that Riku could persuade them all to leave is a very real threat even if she'd never consider it.

“There is... something else,” you admit quietly. “Something that may hurt to hear, but that you deserve to know. Isshin and I suspected it, and the evidence is still circumstantial... we've kept it close to our chests because if word got out the Central 46 would lose their collective minds.”

“Riku, get to the point,” Miyako pleads in a low, tense tone. “You're scaring me a little.”

You take a deep breath... this isn't going to be easy for you to say or for her to hear, and you're still not sure this is a good idea. But you're convinced this is right, that she deserves to know the truth, and that she deserves to learn it from you rather than by accident in the middle of battle.

“We figured out that a part of Kaien's soul ended up in Kurosaki Ichigo's body,” you explain carefully, watching your sister in law's gaze turn blank. “It's his zanpakuto. The way it manifests, its true form, the way he swings it, its reiatsu... it's unmistakable.”

“But it has none of Kaien's memories, nothing else that made your husband the man we all respected.”

“... how?” Miyako asks in a small voice, the single word sounding almost strangled in her throat.

“Aizen, we suspect,” you reveal the last detail. “Isshin and I can't prove it for sure, and Gin wasn't directly involved but he suspects the same. It was a hollow that attacked Kurosaki Masaki, something that Aizen made from Kaien's soul after his disappearance.”

“I... I wish I knew what else to say to you but that,” you admit sadly. “All I know I can do is offer the truth, to fill in the gaps with what we suspect, and to hope that can at least give you some small sense of closure after all these years.”

“It sounds so... insufficient,” you admit. “So small and meaningless...”

“Stop,” Miyako insists quietly... though her voice is firm, tears are already glistening in her eyes. “There's nothing either of us can do now. I accepted years ago that the man I adored died, so... you've confirmed what I knew in my heart.”

“Will you... be okay, eventually?” you ask, still feeling somewhat ashamed and powerless in this situation.

Miyako shakes her head. “As much as I patch the cracks in my heart it'll always be broken... but now that I know I can cope. Because even if it's not the man I loved, a part of Kaien still exists in a way.”

“I'm not okay... but I can live with this. I owe Kaien that much.”

>>
So, serious BS question, how the hell do you actually get a decent number of orbs? Or is grinding challenges the only really option?
>>
>>2108811
You get 250 or so a month for logging in and doing new event missions, depending on whether the characters that drop from the events are ones you have or not. You also get orbs for leveling characters all the way, which eventually comes down to new 5* units giving you a total of 125 each (50 for hitting level 100 as a 5*, plus 75 for hitting level 150 as a 6*). Raid characters are a major source of new characters to level, so if you've not tapped that resource out I'd recommend doing so.

Avoid the temptation to play the story all the way through. You can exhaust that supply and once it's gone you don't get more from the story until a new chapter is released. I only dip my toes into that pool when I'm substantially short on how many orbs I want for a specific banner.

Eventually though you'll be mostly out of sources, though if you're careful you can delay getting to that point for quite a while. But even at endgame you're talking about 250+ orbs a month, so it just means a slowdown rather than a dead stop.

Funny thing, the novel elaborated on her power and she can eat hollows. Her digestive system is powerful enough to fight Hollow Poisoning, and she ate part of Loly's Resurrección (which allowed her to apply poison to her arrows because the Glutton is also kirby powers; she also applied the Love to her arrows).

It feels like the conversation has basically ended now. You've told Miyako what you needed to tell her, and though it's shaken her she seems like she'll be able to cope with what she's learned. And though you regret that she'll have to cope with this... in a sense she's been coping for fifteen years.

“We should go back,” you tell her quietly. “You ready?”

Miyako's eyes are dry now, though you can tell she was crying moments ago. “I think so. But whether I am or not we shouldn't keep the Captains waiting any longer.”

“Then let's see what we've moved on to,” you sigh, cracking open the door and waving your sister in law in.

“What do you mean?” Rangiku demands sternly. “Are you implying something, sir?”

“Only that your Division hasn't been completely truthful in the past,” Shunsui sighs. “It wasn't intended as an attack, but it was a point I thought to bring up.”

“Okay, what did I miss?” you sigh, taking up your position in the ranks.

“I was asking about the Reigai,” Hitsugaya explains. “I was curious whether that sort of technology could be used to augment our numbers, and the Head Captain mentioned that your Division took the lead in dealing with them.”

“So, what do you think?” Shunsui asks you directly. “Are there any reigai in a condition to assist, in any capacity? It's more idle curiosity than a plan.”

“The Central 46 has made its position clear,” you remind Shunsui calmly. “But if you'd like to deal with the morality of that whole business you're on your own. I'll have no further part in it.”

“Now, if you'll forgive me... I need to speak with my Lieutenant alone,” you sigh. “I'll just be a moment.”

You gesture to Rangiku and lead her out of the room, the same as you did minutes ago with Miyako, and once outside you confront her. “So what did you do with Senna, anyway?”

Your daughter pushes her cleavage together, and does a little shimmy with a proud smile on her face. “I hid her between my breasts.”

Wait... she what? You simply stare at her for a moment. “Did you really now?”

“Yup,” Rangiku nods. “I figured short of leaving her gikongan with you or Yoruichi the safest place for her is on my person, and nobody's going to dare mess with my underwear. So I sewed a little pouch into the chest band that I can slide her into.”

“You really kept her in your bra this whole time!?” you demand, still taken aback.

“Is that so hard to believe?”

“... yes?”

“Well, she's safe,” Rangiku insists, patting her chest right above where Senna's gikongan is hidden. “She'll be fine... some time it'll be okay to let her walk free, but until then I'll keep her hidden as best I can, just how we agreed.”

>Remember, as dubious as it is... you may find a situation where you might need to rely on her. Don't be afraid to.

“Is she... okay?” you ask.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, have you talked with her recently?” you clarify. “Made sure she's not losing her mind from not having a body for an extended period?”

“No,” Rangiku admits. “I haven't really found much of a chance to do it without anyone being around who would notice.”

“Rangiku,” you sigh, “as dubious as it seems... we may have to rely on Senna at some point in the near future. And even if we don't, there's more to taking care of her than simply hiding her.”

“Is she self-aware?” Rangiku asks, suddenly seeming to realize that possibility. “I hope she's not feeling jealous...”

“Would you stop doing that for a moment?”

Rangiku stops playing around and nods. “Sorry, I guess this is serious, isn't it. I'll give her a chance to stretch... well, maybe like a plushie's legs?”

“When we get home,” you agree. “I'll help you keep an eye on her.”

With that agreed upon you return to the lineup once more... Unohana gives you a knowing glance, but aside from that you continue to find yourself left to your own divices.

Alright, so here's what to expect for this evening: Neliel doesn't know much about the other arrancars than Riku already knows, but can get you a little bit of information. The reason for this is that the other arrancars are extremely secretive when it comes to their abilities.

Liltotto is going to sell Gigi out as best she can, and will share the epithets of her fellow surviving Sternritters, but can't offer much about how their abilities work. She can only explain how the abilities of the Femritters work and how those relate to their titles, and make suggestions about how others might be characterized similarly.

As helpful as Lilotto (which I am thankful of due to dice, if that was the same result as Nel's roll, we would've been FUCKED), it still feels like it won't be enough considering how BULLSHIT the remaining epithets are. Like Jesus, letters "D", "M" and "X" could've easily cleaned the fucking house. The only epithets that felt rewarding to get crucial info on to get effective countermeasures on is "Z". “Liltotto, Neliel,” you begin, your tone quite calm and even. “What can you tell us about your former allies? Who to watch out for, at very least?”

“You expect us to sell out?” Liltotto asks skeptically.

“I'd prefer that the Gotei 13 don't go in blind,” you correct her. “Remember that mercy is a luxury reserved for those who are in total control of the situation.”

Liltotto seems taken aback a little, probably surprised at how untenable her own position suddenly became in the face of that rationale. Instead it's Nel who speaks.

“Unfortunately I cannot tell you much that Ichimaru hasn't already shared,” she sighs. “We arrancar are very secretive when it comes to our powers. But I can tell you which among them was a Vasto Lorde before they became an arrancar.”

“Do tell,” Shunsui nods.

“There are only three,” she explains. “Wonderweiss Margela, Barragan Luisenbairn, and Ulquiorra Schiffer. I do not know if their resurrected forms gain any unusual abilities, but their basic abilities are... extreme.”

“Ulquiorra and Wonderweiss...” you mutter grimly, putting faces to the names. “Anyone else?”

“Rumor was that Cien Granz was powerful,” she continues, “but his power has clearly diminished since then.”

“And you, Liltotto?” you press in a lower tone. “I would understand if you were hesitant... you don't have as much reason to be open with us as Bambietta.”

“That bitch Gigi is the one I really wanna sell out,” Liltotto admits, brushing some of her blonde hair out of her eyes and arranging it under her hat. “Its title is Zombie, and it can use its filthy blood to animate the dead. It can even work on the living, if they've been fucked up badly enough by injuries.”

“It?” Unohana asks curiously.

“That thing may look like a girl, but it's not,” Liltotto scowls.

“And the others?” you prompt her.

Liltotto bites her lower lip for a moment. “I'll tell you their titles... beyond that I don't know as much as you might think.”

“We'd appreciate anything you can tell us,” Hitsugaya assures her.

“Several are dead now, either killed by you or by Aizen,” Liltotto admits, “those who remain are the 'Visionary', the 'Jail', the 'Zombie', the 'Miracle', the 'Iron', the 'Deathdealing', the 'Love', the 'Fear', the “X-Axis', and the 'Compulsory'.”

“I would assume those nicknames have to do with their respective powers?” Unohana guesses.

Liltotto nods quietly. “Yeah, of course. There's a bunch that are what we call “Schutzstaffel”... they were all supposed to be retardedly strong. Unfortunately for you they're all still alive. Those're Miracle, Deathdealing, X-Axis, and Compulsory, and word has it they were some of the first to take the blood.”

“How will we recognize them?” Sui Fēng asks next.

“I don't know what Compulsory looks like under its coat, but X-Axis is a black man in a silly hat, Miracle is a freaking Aryan superman in a mask, and Deathdealing looks like a clown with a little bit of hair coming down over his face.”

“Sounds like an interesting bunch,” Yoruichi sighs.

Liltotto shakes her head. “You have no idea.”

“We need to also give some thought to the fact that Aizen now has a standing army,” you point out.

“That is a fair point,” Shunsui immediately agrees. “Miss Lamperd, was it? Can you give us an idea...”

In the middle of his sentence, Shunsui is interrupted by a runner who crashes through the doors.

“Captains, I have a report from the SRDI!” he shouts, immediately kneeling in the middle of the room.

“And that would be?” Kisuke frowns. “I thought I specifically left orders...”

Is it time for Grimmjow to do his thing, or did he die already i don't remember. I'm supposing if it isn't a variation of that, then Aizen found something/someone interesting in Karakura town.
>>

>>2112196
It's very possible It's a trap, but that being said, we can't let Aizen do as he pleases. Hopefully we can get some more information before making that decision.

I wouldn't put it past Aizen to both try to achieve an objective with this venture, and also ideally attempt to cripple the seireitei's military strength by using something akin to suicide bombers. That notion shouldn't be too ludicrous, considering Mayuri, as well as Slayzelapporo (I think) and possibly a Gift ball deluxe are in play, we should be very cautious for hidden forces or abnormal surprises.

I don't think Riku would fall prey to an ambush/skirmish like that, but not all of our fellow captains might be so lucky, so let's be careful in who we bring.

“Let me go!” you demand angrily.

“No,” Yoruichi insists, her hand grasped firmly around your bicep. “This is a trap and we both know it.”

“Then it's been exquisitely baited!” you fire back. “You can't expect me to just stay here and do nothing!”

“We'll get more intel in a few moments,” Yoruichi observes, her grip still tight. “I'm not letting you rush in blind there blind, Riku.”

“Omaeda!” she barks, eyes still locked with your own. “Send a scouting squad immediately.”

“Hang on,” Shunsui begins, only to be interrupted by your wife.

“Last I checked deployment of the Ōnmitsukidō was a matter for the Executive Commander, not for the Head Captain. Omaeda, carry out your orders now or you find my foot up your ass.”

A tension in your shoulders and across your chest, which you hadn't even noticed at first, begins to ease. Yoruichi's hand releases your arm.

“Captain Shihōin is correct,” Shunsui observes. “We can't rush into the situation before we know what we'll be facing. I didn't figure I'd need to remind you of that, Captain Kusajishi.”

You quickly type in the numbers for Isshin's cell phone in the world of the living, and hit the button to dial him. The phone rings once, then again... and continues to ring until you're concerned that he might not pick it up.

Then it makes a connection.

“Wrong number.” a gruff voice that doesn't belong to your foster brother insists.

“Right number,” you reply sternly, “wrong person. Who are you, dead man?”

“Ah, so you must be a friend of this man,” the voice responds. “To speak with such insolence you must be a shinigami, probably a Captain.”

“To say such things you must be an arrancar,” you reply.

“Correct,” the arrancar on the other end responds. “Goodbye, Captain.”

Then the phone disconnects.

“Lieutenant Matsumoto, prepare Kurosaki Ichigo to follow us,” you order, and then you point to Neliel and Liltotto. “You two go with her. Captain Unohana, prepare for imminent casualties. Captain Shihōin, I'll be on a war footing from the start. Care to join me?”

“Sure,” Yoruichi nods. “I was kinda thinking the same thing.”

The two of you step outside, and allow Rangiku time to get clear of the First Division. The release of Yoruichi's shunkō and Raijūsenkō, or of Tenkotsuki and Kobara no Tachi would each be a hazard to those nearby, and so you wait until you're within the Dangai to do so.

By the time you arrive on-site in Karakura town, the amount of reiatsu you're releasing would be enough to cause most spiritually-sensitive humans in the city to faint. But extending your senses reveals it's for nothing: no arrancar seem to still be here... and more disturbingly there are no quincy either. With no immediate threat, so far as you can perceive, you seal Kobara no Tachi's power for later when it may be necessary.

“It smells like there was a fight,” Yoruichi scowls, allowing her shunkō to fade but keeping her zanpakuto released. “But... not as much as I figured.”

I may be thinking too meta, but how did that one Arracnar know how a phone works, and what to say in response?

DId Aizen prime them on what to say? Was having a suspicious enough resonse also part of the plan, to draw people in? Or actually trying to dissuade people from coming?

You rush to the site where you know there was an attack, and where you feel that there are still people... being unable to sense Ryūken or his wife is a sure sign that there's no one at their address who needs your immediate help.

The door is left standing open, and you immediately make your way to Isshin. He lies propped up against the wall, which itself has been splattered with his blood, but he's still breathing.

“Hang on, Isshin,” you reassure him, “I've got you.”

“I'll see to the girls upstairs,” Yoruichi insists, heading to the stairs down the hall.

You set to work closing Isshin's chest wounds... they're deep, and not only has he clearly lost a lot of blood your initial assessment with kaidō tells you that his ribs, sternum, and arm are all badly broken to an extent you've never even seen before. You have to take care of that bad break in his sterum before he's even in a position to speak.

“They.. took...” he struggles.

“Hang on,” you insist. “I'm still getting the two halves of your sternum glued back together.”

A few moments later you move on to stopping the last of his bleeding, with the intent that someone else will finish the job for you now that Isshin's life is no longer in any immediate danger.

“What happened here?”

“They took Masaki, Riku,” Isshin gasps, face covered with the hand he can still raise. “They took my wife, threatened my children...”

“How did one arrancar manage this so quickly?” you ask him, sealing up the last major laceration in his side and moving on to his mangled right arm.

“He was fast, faster than I've seen anyone move in years,” Isshin explains, trying to force himself to calm down. “He... touched my right shoulder. I felt my body grow weaker on that side, then he hit me with a bigass axe.”

“Nearly killed me on the spot. That's how he convinced Masaki to leave... because he mauled me so easily, and threatened to move on to our kids, he left her without a choice.”

>Go upstairs, see to the girls. If they're still conscious they must be terrified.

“Yoruichi is taking care of the girls,” you reassure your brother. “But right now I need you to tell me everything you can about the dead man whose voice it was on the phone.”

“Other than what I already told you...” Isshin frowns. “Gray hair, like an old man, but bulky and well dressed. He had gems on his outfit and his mask fragments were like a... tiara, I suppose.”

“Then I'll just have to bring you his tiara as his apology,” you promise, sensing Ichigo's arrival outside. Tatsuki and Lieutenant Kotetsu are here as well... the latter is a particularly good thing.

When you stand you find Ichigo staring in through the door at the scene with wide, disbelieving eyes. “What happened here?”

“Aizen's men,” you reply simply. “Talk with your old man, then go upstairs. Your sisters are going to need you.”

Instead of stopping to involve yourself even further in the Kurosakis' affairs, you push your way past. Tatsuki looks like she wants to try and say something to Ichigo as well but you grab her arm, physically dragging her back outside.

“The hell was that for!?” she demands once she's out of earshot.

“I know you're concerned,” you explain to her with a sigh, “but this isn't a situation you want to get involved in too deeply... not yet, anyway. Give the poor guy some room to breathe first.”

“But his family...”

“Will be in no worse a position ten minutes from now,” you remind her. “Let Isshin speak with him first, let him be with his sisters. Nothing you can say or do before then will help.”

A few moments later Yoruichi drops down from the window ledge to join you and Tatsuki in the parking lot. “Yuzu and Karin will be fine, they're not hurt. At least... not physically. Yuzu is still crying, and Karin seems more shaken than she's letting on.”

“Dammit,” you grumble angrily. “I swear I'm gonna kill that bastard.”

“Aizen or the one who did this?”

“Yes.”

When you arrive at the Ishida residence, you find that Uryū is already there. He simply stares at the empty building, its door left open.

“Ishida?” you ask.

“Father was away this week at a conference in Kyotō,” he explains, never actually turning to look at you. “But mother was here.”

“We need to take a look inside,” you explain carefully. “To try and determine what happened here.”

“Isn't it obvious?” he muses grimly.

You shake your head. “No it's not. Kurosaki Masaki was taken hostage... it's likely your mother would have been as well.”

“And what use would that serve?”

You get a good sense for the scene... very little reiatsu scattered around here, and all of it that you can sense belongs to an arrancar for certain. Not a single shred of evidence exists to suggest a battle, at least not from the outside.

“Your mother is gemischt, isn't she?”

Ishida stares at you. “Excuse me?”

“Your mother is gemischt, Masaki is echt,” you explain. “So that's not a potential connection for why they were targeted as opposed to Ichigo's sisters, or your respective fathers.”

“Does that mean anything?” Yoruichi asks with a frown.

“We can't rule it out.”

“Agreed.”

You step inside the house, walking from room to room while trying to pick out any details that are amiss. The table is set, the kitchen is clean, there aren't any objects dropped on the floors though a few picture frames and candlesticks have been knocked over on the shelves. In the dining room there are several such objects... all of which seem to have fallen outward, towards the walls.

“Someone released their reiatsu in this room,” you guess. “And it was a powerful display. Whoever it was probably made it clear from the start that Kanae was outmatched.”

“It seems consistent,” Yoruichi nods.

“So mother is...”

“Probably still alive,” you nod to Ishida, “yes.”

“So, why?” he asks again.

“This was personal,” Yoruichi offers in a grim tone. “Not much could be more personal than attacking someone's mother.”

“And capturing someone's mother?” Ishida presses.

“Probably meant to draw you and Kurosaki into the confrontation. To make Karakura's hometown defenders angry... and sloppy.”

With that being said... how do you want to proceed? Yoruichi exchanges a glance with you, then glances back in the direction of the Kurosaki clinic.

You... really don't have much time, so you stop for a few moments at the old Urahara shop.

“Oi, Tessai!” you call out. “You in!?”

“Riku, you can tell he's not,” Yoruichi sighs.

“Why are we even here?” Tatsuki asks you in confusion.

“Yes, why are we here?” Ishida agrees.

You shake your head. “Nobody told you that you had to come along.”

“I'll just be a moment,” Yoruichi shakes her head. “Need to slip into something a little more... visible.”

Your wife disappears into the house, leaving you to explain why precisely Yoruichi should have a gigai while you borrow Tenkotsuki's powers to create one for yourself.

“It'll help to have two of us in a position to talk to people,” you explain, “or to distract teachers for each other. Yoruichi and I spent nearly two centuries training together almost every day, we just... work well together.”

“There,” Tenkotsuki informs you. “I would prefer that you keep your swords sealed while using this form however... excess power could undo my careful work and cause a fuss among the locals. After all, it is a rare sight to see a woman explode in the middle of the street.”

“I'll keep that in mind,” you nod.

Finally, Yoruichi returns in her gigai... oh.

“So, how do I look?” she asks, giving herself a little twirl.

“I think you shinigami take to this a little too enthusiastically,” Ishida can't help but sigh despite the severity of the situation at hand.

“I take everything seriously,” Yoruichi explains with a smug grin. “Such visual and stylistic perfection is expected from someone in my lofty position.”

“How come I get the feeling you're lying...”

You and your companions turn a few heads once you get to Karakura High, which is... understandable. However you get the entire room to stare when you barge into Kurosaki's home room.

The teacher stares at you in disbelief. “Okay, Kusajishi, Arisawa, Ishida. I presume there's an explanation for this?”

“Picking up homework,” you explain in the vaguest possible terms.

“And the reason for your absence?” she presses.

“Lots of travel,” you sort of lie. “A lot of problems at the shrine too for that matter, but I take it you've been getting my mail?”

“Indeed I have,” she nods with a wry grin. “You know I'm gonna have to have a chat with your guardians at some point, mailing in your assignments hardly seems a substitute for being here.”

Well, since the closest thing you know of that you can regard as a mother is Inari... unlikely? You decide to keep that tidbit to yourself.

“So who's your friend?”

“Yoruichi,” your wife greets Ichigo's teacher with a polite bow. “And I apologize, but I have to be back to my own classes soon. I go to a different school you see.”

“A school with the same uniform as ours?” Ms Ochi cocks her eyebrow.

“Of course I'm not wearing all of it,” Yoruichi lies effortlessly. “Too stuffy.”

“Very well then,” Ms Ochi sighs, handing Tatsuki a small stack of papers. “Take these to Kurosaki when you get the chance?”

“I will,” Tatsuki nods, just as the bell rings.

“Hey Chad,” you sigh, almost causing the poor boy to start in his seat. “You... mind if we talk? You seem a bit distracted.”

“Yeah...”

“So... I take it you know some of what happened,” you tell him, taking up a seat in the window sill and prompting Tenkotsuki to give you a hand with disguising your conversation. “Why don't you tell me a little about it? Don't worry, I've seen to it no one will know what we're really saying.”

“It was... bad,” Chad admits quietly.

“You've been training for 'bad' though,” you point out.

He shakes his head. “It was a monster.”

“Nothing we Captains haven't dealt with before,” you shake your head. “What is it, really?”

“I don't think I could win,” he tells you, almost more as an admission to himself.

“Not with that attitude,” you scoff. “Listen... you're not as strong as a Captain, but not all arrancar are as strong as the ones you felt today.”

“You'll know your place on the battlefield when you see it, and there will be enemies you won't be able to beat... but you'll only be useless if you convince yourself that you are.”

“They came and left quickly,” Chad tells you, finally seeming to calm down a little. “Sorry I can't tell you much. My senses aren't great.”

“Was there anyone else with them?” you ask.

Chad shakes his head. “They came alone.”

>Chad, I need you to keep an eye on Ichigo for me. His family is in... a rough spot.

This will unfortunately be my last update for tonight, and I won't be able to get back to it until next weekend. We're not where I wanted to get to, but this is how it has to be due to commitments this weekend that start in eight hours.

“I'm going to need you and Tatsuki to be my eyes,” you tell him carefully, sparing a glance at Ishida. “And I need the two of you to keep Ishida and Ichigo from doing anything too stupid.”

“Can you do that?”

“I can try,” Chad nods. “You know how Ichigo is.”

“Well... I guess I'll take what I can get,” you sigh, dismissing Tenkotsuki's spell.

“Sorry, Ochi-sensei,” you apologize with a curt bow, “but we should probably get going now. Especially since miss Honshō seems to be getting a bit too familiar with my girlfriend.”

“Ah, that could be an issue,” miss Ochi nods knowingly. “I heard miss Arisawa talking, apparently you both know karate too?”

“It really is for miss Honshō's safety,” you nod sagely as Yoruichi narrows her eyes at the overly-interested girl who just won't shut her mouth.

“So who would be better, between miss Arisawa and your friend here?” miss Ochi asks curiously.

“Yoruichi,” you reply immediately. “Not even a challenge in a serious fight.”

“Scary,” miss Ochi nods. “Keep sending your work in for me to grade, then.”

“Can do.”

And that's it for now, folks. I'll stick around for a few minutes, and can check in tomorrow for omake ideas. I may have time to do one or two during the week, just not before thursday or friday.

You'll know by Friday what my weekend looks like, so keep an eye on twitter.
>>
Omake idea:
Someone finding out Yoruichi and Riku are married, preferably late to the party
>>
>>2117166
Omake ideas:
>What if Both Riku and Yoruichi Regai clones were saved and allowed to roam about Seireitei? Oh the shenanigans and domestic hell the pair raise on a daily basis.

>A brief scene of family comfort/feels where Isshin briefs Ichigo on the terrible kidnapping while Ichigo hugs and headpats a bawling Yuzu. There better be a family group hug in there somewhere.

>Tessai gets a visitor at the Urahara shop. It's Hachigen.

>Rangiku finally finds time to let Senna stretch her legs once in a while, albeit briefly.

Some scary fridge thought:
>Two Pure-blooded Quincy are kidnapped and brought before Aizen for nefarious purposes
>Both Quincy are women.
>Perish the thought.
>>
>>2117166
>Yoruichi checking on Yuzu and Karin
Also, it’s not an omake in the usual sense, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d like to see the writeup for:
>Hey turbodyke whose name I never bothered learning, you kept up your training?
>>
>>2117456
>Someone finding out Yoruichi and Riku are married, preferably late to the party
This has some potential, I'll do it if I get around to it early this week.

>Rangiku finally finds time to let Senna stretch her legs once in a while, albeit briefly.

>Yoruichi checking on Yuzu and Karin

Note: spooky arrancars entire stick is decay over time.

But isnt divinity meant to strengthen with time?
I dont think his power is going to work as described on us or the cat.
>>
>>2120093
have you heard of the term "The Gods need prayers badly"? There's been numerous cases in history where divinities whose domain were swallowed up by the tides of time as their legends and mythology gets erased from mankind's activities. Mimihagi "would" be a known divinity, but the fact that there practically is no known mortal legend about him means his powers might not be that great.
