"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind. Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun. Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam. Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’. Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara. Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day. Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’. Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers. Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Not sure about you, but I reckon this is the perfect theme for Prince trying to both win the battle and keep his men alive.

Recap

It all comes down to this. Or several days of 'this'. Every choice you’ve made, every success and every failure. It’s all led to you and the Company fighting to stave off the marshalled strength of the entire Free Alliance from the walls of some northern town while you wait for your dread employer, The Necromancer to relieve you with his fell host. Maybe you fekked up somewhere along the line, but for the life of you its impossible to figure out exactly where.

You lost men, brothers. Some you didn’t know too well, it’s the harsh reality of your position as an Officer. A battle is one thing, hours of movement and running around followed by minutes of terror and screaming. One way or another, it's all over soon enough most of the time. Humans weren't meant for sieges, days and days on end of the same pants-shitting terror knowing it will happen all over again tomorrow, if they live that long.

You thrive in this hell, you and people like Bad Hand. You feel better now than you did before the siege started. But your lads... they're only human, you wonder how many will survive this. If any of them will. The butcher's bill grows steeper every day and you still don't know your esteemed employer will bother to keep you among the living. This is a tough time for the Company, the most desperate of measures are being taken to last out another day. Last night you killed a insubordinate officer who defied your Captain, and you still don't know if you did the right thing.

Perhaps half the Company now wouldn’t mourn your death, and those in the 4th Infantry would gladly give you that final, fatal nudge over a line you’ve been dancing on for years. But everything you have done, it's all been for the Black Company… hasn't it? Has it instead all been for Captain Kiranova? You’ve begun to wonder whether you would do anything asked of you by the cold-hearted queen of ice you love so dearly, even against the interests of the Company.

Or maybe none of the above is true. Perhaps you’ve always liked killing, and any moral hand-wringing done after the fact has been to assuage your own dark inclinations. You’re not just an officer, a cynic, a tired veteran of fighting for coin. You are a monster. But perhaps a monster is what the Black Company needs right now.

Slight delay, sorry lads. 1 hour until next post is up.
>>
In the meantime:

It is now firmly established that Lieutenant 'Prince' belongs to the Captain.
>Do you, as a player, regret this?
>>
>>2096527
Regrets are for people who don't enjoy this descent into madness and dark magic. We tried being a good man and that little piece of us died with Whitebitch and Kid.
>>
>>2096527
Sort of backing >>2096560 but also I think tough situations are more interesting to play through anyway... so a definite
>no
>>
>>2096527
What do you mean belong?
Belong as in we are loyal to her above the company no matter what? No.
Belong as in waifu? Probably.
Also, at what point did this group fall into another world? Before Croaker's time or what?
>>
>>2096527
I do not regret this
Monsters stick together
Mybe if we had chocain a differnt path for him both skills and other things
Then mybe going for saint would have been it
Men dont fear men they fear monsters
>>
>>2096527
No it isn't. I feel like he could refuse her in face of saving the company. I could even see him helping Saint in removing Kiranova from the equation if it meant a better future for the men.
>>
>>2096659
Also love how we failed every flirt roll we had with her
>>
>>2096670
Idk
We have done everything she has told us to do.
I mean she would had to be doing something that would distroy the company.
She asked as befor if we could take the money and run with the company but we said no
>>
>>2096527
She's the captain, she gave an order and recieved insubordination during one of the most desperate, life threatening the company has had to deal with in a long time, if ever. We did our job, didn't enjoy it, didn't even completely disagree with the officer and I'm sad to see him go, but we have a job to do and Id rather have the men alive and hate us, rather then dead in a ditch because we were soft.
>>
>>2096527
My only regret is that we failed to get the Captain and saint to love us.
>>
>>2096793
We actually rejected the captain, at least technically, and saint isn't lost yet. She will be lewded anon, mark my words.
>>
>>2096816
Dat dosnt mean it will be from us

>>
Very well said. I'm glad to see that generally the players opinion reflect my own on where Prince is at.

>>2096672
Flamboyant gestures always had a low chance of impressing her. Your work ethic (not only seizing Kresden but kicking the Free Alliance in the teeth while you were at it at the cost of your own face) did more to impress her than declarations of love or naming man-made lakes after her.

She shows affection to her favourite and most loyal tool, certainly. But love? Who knows.

>>2096627
I imagine the most easily justifiable time would be at the Many Deaths of the Black Company book, or far before during the initial world travelling. If it's the former, then the annals were lost to this segment. If it's the latter, this Black Company's history has evolved concurrently with the books.

=====================

“SEVENTH KREIGSTROM PLATOON!” SGT Bad Hand roars, spittle flying past his ill-kept moustache, at the armoured figures milling around in the courtyard “ATTEN-SHUN!”

The armoured soles of 2 dozen of the hardest killers on the face of the earth stamp to attention in perfect unison. These are the men, women and everything else that Chevalisse and Neumunster mothers tell stories about to their children to make them behave. That Free Alliance enlisted men whisper about around the campfire and look into the darkness in fear.

You stand tall before them, an imposing figure with in your wicked Blackthorn Armour and Cloak of Command billowing behind you in the chilling early-winter breeze. Your face is a wreck, the scar enough to churn the stomach of any comely tavern wench. But your men don't want pretty, they want hard. Hard leaders for hard times.

“This is it, soldiers. Our backs to the walls, our lives at stake and the Company itself fighting to survive. But that is nothing new. The Company itself has a long and well earned reputation for being vicious and unpredictable. When necessary, we've even been our own Monsters. Black hearts. Cold Steel. Dark deeds.

”BLACK HEARTS.” There is a thump as the 7th Kreigstrom chant. Fists against chestplates, scabbards against stone pavement.

That Prince is dedicated to the Captain is beyond question, surely? Whether that equates to something approaching what they had in the past is up for debate.

>>2096939

”Sometimes we pretend to forget, but those words hold us to the truth. And every black decision, every cold slaughter, every dark deed done would be done again. Because every one was paid for, in the only coin we can never lose but always spend. The coin we pay with is not what we get from the Employer. The coin we pay in is loyalty. Loyalty backed by Cold Steel.”

”COLD STEEL.” Another thump. You see the odd head bob in agreement, a grunt of affirmation here and there. It’s the truth, rarely spoken but always acknowledged on some level. The Company is family, this is who you are.

”We’ve lost comrades. Friends. Family. Because that is what we are. The difference between the Black Company, what makes us a Family despite being a bunch of bastards who often dislike one another because we're all bastards, isn't that the Company always keeps its contracts. It isn't that we have our history written down, uniting the past members with the present. It's that the Company always pays back what it owes. The meanest, roughest, most unpleasant thug among you, probably myself out of everyone here since being in charge means I have to be just to keep the other real bastards in line - if I wasn't so pretty I wouldn't have any friends at all. But I trust every one of you with my back in a fight. We all do despite not being heroes or noble idealists. Dark Deeds.”

”DARK DEEDS.” *Thump*. You know some of these faces will be as cool and pale as the steel in their gauntlets by the end of today. Even as you speak with passion you didn’t know you had, you wonder at the cost.

”And now, the Captain has asked for more than ever before. To pay the Brothers of the company in that coin of trust, to bear the cost no matter how high for us, so that the Company can not just survive but to do everything possible that we all survive with it. I know that what she asks will cost us all a lot, the dead should be allowed to rest. They should be, but for us they’ll fight. Once more. One last time for us. For you. We will all survive this together, the dead saving the living. Never forget that this is who we are. Once your name is in the annals, you are our brother one way or another. Eternally. Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds.”

“BLACK HEARTS. COLD STEEL. DARK DEEDS.” THUMP In unison.

“BLACK HEARTS. COLD STEEL. DARK DEEDS.” THUMP Again. You love your lads. Your family.

“BLACK HEARTS. COLD STEEL. DARK DEEDS.” THUMP By the Dark Father, you are home.

”Well?!? You heard the man, what are you fekking waiting for?!” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien leers at the assembled chanting troops, flecks of spit flying and eyes bulging madly. “Breakfast was 10-fekking-minutes ago lads, get your lazy, bed-wetting arses to the fekking walls and TAKE SOME FEKKING HEADS!!!”

”HOH!” Murderous men, deadly dames, gruesome Gren. They’re practically running to the walls, black banner held high, as the Free Alliance trumpets sound the attack.

Saint path died with kid. +5 DC you say?

>>2096527
As others have pointed out, we turned down the Captain. We support her because she supports the company. If she ever turned on the company . . . .

But her actions, while harsh, are what is necessary. She has proven that she won't shirk from her obligation to save the ompany no matter the cost to herself. Nobody can think that what she does is easy for her, because the easy way was always an option. Instead she stands and takes the abuse of her own men and carries that weight of having to give orders that lesser men balk from.

She doesn't have the luxury of surviving and saying that what let her live wasn't what she wanted. Or even that she would rather die than do what had to be done. Because she isn't just responsible for herself, but for all the men of the company. Both living and dead.

The recent decision to have the fallen fight for us isn't the first such choice of ethical debate the company has made. It's not even the first she had had to make, because that's what command is.

The decision to abandon a cut off squad. To sacrifice one group holding a retreat. To send men to almost certainly doom to save others.

The troops have the luxury of almost never facing the truth of it directly. This time it's unavoidable as they face their fallen comrades once more. But for those in command, they face it directly all the time. At night when they wrestle with all the ways different choices could have turned out. With what they know after the battle that makes a mockery of the hopes they had. When seeing new squads formed from broken ones bond. When new troops fill old spots.

Why do they think we hate paperwork so much? Seeing the holes made from our failures written down in ink to be kept forever in the annals.

What the commander of the 4th did was right, but selfish. He knew there was only one response the Captain could give his insubordination. He robbed his platoon of their father, and weakened the company at a critical time because of HIS personal values.

Maybe we're a monster because we sacrificed our own values for the good of the Company. But we're the COMPANIES monster, us and the Captain, and all the other officers who make monstrous choices so that the rest live another day and get paid to do so.

I do think that the raised should get paid for their continued service by the way. A reminder that they aren't being used or were discarded after death, just that their service is still needed and that even in death the Company us family.

The Big One, Day Four. Outside Kresden, In the Enemy Encampment

”Catapults ready!” The Master-Chief from the 2nd Imperial Engineer Corp bellows, the clanking of machinery and hollering of well-trained teams of men continue even as the masses of Free Alliance formations begin their advance on Kresden's walls.

As a universal standard, the Neumunster Engineer Corps are known to set up an entire battery of siege equipment in a matter of minutes. From the caravan to firing rubble at fortifications, the whole set up takes less than an hour at most. But with the giant, scaled terror in the sky every attempt to do so has resulted in broken equipment and burnt corpses. That changes today.

”We’re going to bag that dragon today. I fekking know it! Scaly Skewer, yessir.” The skinny Corporal cackles, giving the Ballista he is sitting on an affectionate pat. ”Reckon they’ll give me a fekkin’ bonus then, eh?”

The Elven Sniper does not respond immediately, his cool eyes scanning the skies.
”You are sure this contraption will penetrate its hide?”

”Hmph.” The Neumunster engineer grunts, as if personally offended at the slight against his machinery. ”Matilda here can handle ol’ lizard lips, don’t you worry. I’ve seen her shoot a Kalgarri War-Mount straight through the tusks and out the other side of the skull. You spot this dragon in time, then me and me boys will send 2 metres of Neumunster Imperial Splinter through his eye and right out ‘is arse!”

”I hope this is not typical human overconfidence.” Rolling their eyes is beneath the elves, but you can always hear it in their voice. ”For the moment of truth is upon us.”

The engineer’s eyes shoot wide open as he and the Ballista crew leaps to the ready, the shadow of Asgorga’s black wings blotting out the sun as he readies his dive.

”Load?”

”Ready!”

”Taut?”

”Ready!”

”Latch?”

”All yours boss.”

The Engineer Corporal can’t help but grin mockingly at the Elven marksmen, already ducking for cover, as he steadies his hand on the lever. ”One dragon kebab, coming up!”

From the battlements above the Western Gate you watch as the Free Alliance marches
forward on a scale you haven't seen before. The Battle of Weylan river was a skirmish compared to this, a dress rehearsal. The devastation of Sarsburg was bigger, but at least the overwhelming numbers back then were on your side.

How are you supposed to survive this?

There is a cheer as the enemy siege equipment explodes in fire, flaming wreckage and pieces of timber and rope flying high as Asgorga wreaks absolute havoc. He pays special attention to one particular Ballista crew, hunting down each of the team and swallowing the unfortunate men whole. Asgorga holds up his front paw gingerly, a bolt sticks out of his foreleg. He spends more time than necessary venting his rage on the Neumunster Engineers, hunting them down long after the last piece of siege equipment is utterly destroyed.

>That should read:

South-Western Section (The South Wall): SECURE

The Neumunster march doggedly under bolt and arrow, over the corpses of their comrades that have made the same walk over the last couple of days as the stone battlements of Kresden loom over them. They carry on all the same, chanting the Neumunster anthem as ladders are raised and brave men clamber up.

Many die. But many more make it over onto the battlements, the Neumunster Legions have the manpower to spare.

The 7th Kreigstrom are already helping hold back the crack team of Heigelen Guard and their veteran support at the Corpse Gate. The 2nd Rangers, Ajiyimad and 4th Infantry are holding the line a the North Tower. If you can finish off the foe here, you may have time to redeploy and reinforce them. It will be a tougher fight, but the alternatives are risky.

That "high risk of harm" is that they're both at higher risk of harm? Or that they are both at equal risk of harm ND therefore a higher chance one will be hurt?

Of we send them both shouldn't it be less chance of harm as the enemy is split between them?
>>
>>2097420
>>You knew that legless orphan would come in handy. Send in the Warmachine. Medium chance of success, medium risk of harm to Legless Jenny.
This is her time to shine
>>
>>2097443
There is a higher chance of at least one of them being seriously hurt. But a bad roll could get both of them killed, certainly.
>>
>>2097447
So the roll would be the same, but we would roll twice for both of them instead of just one?
>>
>>2097458
Exactly. The roll for their injury will be separate from the roll for beating the enemy back.
>>
>>2097420

>Legless Jenny

”Trooper Jenny!” You bellow at the Warmachine in reserve as the Heigelen Guard start hacking at the Western Gate. With their Moonlight Blades it won’t last long.

”Yes Miste- I mean Sir!” The garbled voice emanating from the Albani Warmachine, already sporting streaks of pink you see, sounds nervous.

”I want you take Princess over to the North Wall, and I want you to help our boys there push back the Legionnaries. I need you to smash anyone wearing not wearing our colours.” You pause, uncertain how someone her age will cope with basic orders. ”Jenny, do you understand? This is important.”

”Yessir, Mister, sir.” The Warmachine drones overeagerly, already turning to stomp that way. ”I won’t let you down, Mister Prince.”

You glance at CPL Saint to your side. It used to be sending children into harm’s way would earn her ire, but she only watches the Albani Warmachine trundle off to the North Wall with slight concern. You suppose your influence hasn’t really encouraged her nurturing tendencies.

---------------------------------

(1) Legless Jenny vs The 5th Neumunster Legion
>Medium DC 60

0 = The North Wall has fallen. The fighting spills into the streets as the Free Alliance senses victory.
1 = North Wall Collapsing. Unfortunately, an Albani Warmachine can do a lot of damage to a structure even unintentionally. The North Wall can never be Stalwart.
2 = North Wall Secure. Unfortunately, an Albani Warmachine can do a lot of damage to a structure even unintentionally. The North Wall can never be Stalwart.
3 = North Wall Stalwart. Legless Jenny earns a page of her own in the annals. [Bonus to further Warmachine actions]

(2) Legless Jenny
>Medium DC 60

0 = Legless Jenny is slain. The Warmachine is in ruins. You got another child killed.
1 = Legless Jenny is seriously injured. The Warmachine is in ruins.
2 = Legless Jenny is fine. The Warmachine is operational.
3 = Legless Jenny is a natural. The Warmachine runs like a well-oiled… warmachine. Jenny finds out what 'the button' does. [Bonus to further Jenny actions]

....Hate!

HATE!

Prince will have to deal with the aftermath of this later. Legless Jenny is dead. If only.

The Big One, mid-morning Day Four. The Western Gate.

The gleaming moonlight blades of the Heigelen Guard carve through armour, flesh and bone alike. Chevalisse Paladins are renowned warriors individually, but these Heigelen fight as a unit. The wooden gates themselves prove to be almost no obstacle, carved to shreds. But the sheer number of corpses, debris and fighting bodies packed into the causeway means that the formation outside is reduced to a mad press of frantic shuffling bodies. But still, they’re winning. Undead skeletons, Yellow Dogs and Black Company brothers fall before their onslaught. If you’re going to attack and push them back, it has to be now.
Just as you get ready to give the order you hear female voice from the mess, hoarse and angry.

”Von Harti!” A Heigelen Guard steps out from the press, moonlight blade pointed in the direction of the Kreigstrom. Her helm has come undone, auburn hair matted over a cut on her forehead.

From Saint’s expression it’s clearly someone she recognises. Someone from her time before joining the Black Company. ”Ara…”

Saint draws her own sword, black mist churning from the hilt. Maybe it’s a trick of the eyes, but the blade itself seems to glow as if fresh from the forge.

When the red-haired Heigelen sees the blade in Saint’s hands she looks crestfallen rather than angry.

”Elia… So it is true.” The Heigelen’s expression changes, righteous fury belying the tears in her eyes. ”Traitor. Face me, Iscariot. It’s only right that I’m the one to put you down.”

Saint looks to you, the question obvious in her eyes.

Don't leave just yet! You still have the chance to kill Saint. At least then nobody will make us feel bad for your roll killing another kid. Maybe you could taunt the RNGesus more first.

Really though this is war. People die. We aren't the good guys. This is like, the third kid we killed not counting all the orphans we let die at the beginning of the quest.

We can't have her broken body brought to us so that we can spend our own life to heal her in a dark miracle?

Have her vengeful spirit bound to the war machine, after her body betrayed her with its weakness?

This quest has been hard since the start bud, whenever it was something important we rolled like shit, the only exception being the skald beatdown and dominating the dragon. There's fun twists, then there are constant fucking trash rolls. I've frankly stopped caring, but I feel the need to remind of the utter fucking cursed shitshow this quest has always been, and point to it as a mild justification for the few bits of powergaming we've done.
>>
>>2096527
To basically honest she's the devil we know and is the better choice than the necromancer or whatever. I'm against her policies but we made our choice.
>>
>>2097682
I'm fine with crits so long as we get to make hard choices to ameliorate what the extra bad outcome is when it's something like character death.

I mean I guess it's fine anyways. Not like I'll stop playing. At least Kids death was multiple shit rolls though.

>>
>>2097777
I'm surprised killing our and our Gods unborn child didn't do it either.

Arguably the Emperor was an enemy, and it was part of our contract, and for the good of our Company.

We killed our own blood and an innocent, betrayed the God whose powers we've benefitted from, and it did no good for the Company but merely filled our need for revenge.
>>
>>2097789
I maintain my position that we did our child a favor by killing it.

1. White Bitch would have been a terrible single mother.

2. There is this horrible Necromancer that's taken over a large part of the continent.

3. The new Emperor would soon be dead, with no heir. So even if/when all the baddies are defeated, Neumuster is going to be in civil war mode for years.

The living will literally envy the dead.
>>
>>2097794
Let me rebuttal by saying

> It would have been the avatar of the Dark Father

Besides White Birch showed that she was willing to do anything for her child. I don't think she would have been that bad of a mom.

Besides if a shitty life isn't worth living why haven't you killed yourself yet?

Sweet, we're back in business.

>>2097768
Indirectly through the plagued grain the number of waifs dead by your hands is quite high. It's keeping children alive that is the hard mode apparently.

>>2097777
It did lock out the Manifest Destiny route. The 'good' ending, esentially.

-----------------------------------

You shake your head solemnly, donning your Blackthorn helm.

”That’s a past life, Saint. Before the Company. She is mine.”

”I know, sir.” Saint says with a sad smile. ”I had hoped to spare her from your attentions.”

The Heigelen Captain’s eyes flick your way as you step to the fore, your Kreigstrom slamming into the Heiegelen that had broken through all around you. ”Hiding behind your master? Add craven to your list of failings, Elia. Another thing I never expected from you. First him. Then you.”

Her stance is firm and steady, she is clearly equal or even superior to Saint in terms of pure fighting prowess.

”Heigelen Guard! There stands the Black Prince. Cold-Eye. Murderer of our Holy Emperor. Killer of Children. Poisoner of Peasants. Glory to the one who kills him!”

She has no idea how true that is. If you include the old Emperor, fed to Asgorga, you’ve actually got a double regicide under your belt.

A band of Heigelen Guard, those who have made it past the melee at the gate, rally around Captain von Ellisburg.

It is mid-morning, so the sun should be apparent even through the overcast clouds dropping flecks of snow. But it’s dark, or getting darker. The winter winds have arrived. Yet this cold that creeps now, between the legs of all the combatants at the western gate… it’s unnatural. A frosty mist that bites a the ankle and chills the bone.

Sensing some foul magik the Heigelen rush at you, Captain von Ellisburg at the front. A Heigelen comrade dives in front of her as you Ajiyimad pistol hits its mark, she leaps forward even as her dying comrade falls. You swat her aside as an adult would a toddler, the unnatural strength of your swing cracking bones and denting armour.

The power is flowing through you. You have felt this sensation time and time again, you’re beginning to like it. You have called and things have answered. Captain von Ellisburg and the other Heigelen Guard look up at you with sheer dread.

In the meantime continue voting on the above options as well as this one if you like.

Saint has changed under LT Prince's wing. She's harder, deadlier and more suitable to command now. But her hope and idealism, grating as it was, is well and truly gone.

>>
>>2097968
Well she's gonna have to kill a bunch of kids on her own some day, when we can't be around to do it for her.

Better than when she was pimping them for the nobility, even if she betrayed her oaths a second time by killing said nobility.

Honestly? She was weak before and her ideals did nothing for her other than give an excuse for her weakness. Otherwise she would have walked away. She might not feel better about it, but at least she's more productive now.

In conclusion we're a monster who breaks everything they touch and whose only path towards saving others is to make them as monstrous as ourself in return. So by that metric we've done a good job. We'll be well suited to survive in the tortured hellscape we've helped the necromancer tur the future into, together, in our twisted perversion of love and faith.

>>2097968

As a player, I do. Saint's life ever since she joined the Company has been one trauma after another - not unexpected, since good people aren't going to survive in the Black Company.

As Prince, I don't think he regrets that. Hell, at this point I'm fimrly sure Prince doesn't regret much, but he still has that glimmer of humanity that makes him feel sadness at the cruel actions he has to choose.

Honestly, had she been killed when we met her we would have done her a favor...but I think it's fine. A theme of this Quest has been "Much of what Prince touches turns to shit", and this is emblematic - he saved Saint to be a good person once, and in the end he broke her.

The Black Company is scary not because they're the most well equipped (though some of them are ridiculously well armed and armored indeed) or the most magically powerful (though it has a reputation for attracting the extremely resourceful and creative in that vein) or that it has some kind of fiat protection from their enemies granted by a deity watching over them (just the opposite, really).

It's the willingness to use every means available to them, overturning every stone around them for the scant advantage it might present to them over their enemies, and withholding nothing in all the right order at just the right time to secure a victory, putting neither pride nor vanity ahead of survival and securing their contract just one more day to see just one more pay.

It is disheartening for the prideful, the elite and the advantaged to lose the day against mercenaries who all know they might not survive to spend their money, that indeed, sometimes the end of empires or civilizations hinged entirely on the clinking sound of coin upon coin echoing through the annals of history.

The Black Company is horrifying not for what they stand for or what they're capable of, but because they are capable of everything for, relative to other people's value systems, absolutely nothing.

What? They're known to be hard bastards that are tricky as fuck.

We personally have a fucking DRAGON.

And a bunch of dudes empowered by a dead god.

Their main point is that no matter what, they stick to their contract. They don't break. They'll run if they can without breaking their contract, and they won't spill a drop of blood outside that contract though.

There's plenty more depraved bands than us running around. What makes the Black Company so dangerous is that they have a ridiculously strong set of values and conduct but that it's warped and twisted to serve a singular purpose.

In addition to be hard and sneaky fuckers with combat experience going back centuries thanks to the annals allowing them to change tactics and create situations their enemies are unable to respond to.

Plus being giant pieces of shit.

”If you’re going to accuse me of regicide, be accurate about it.” You say matter-of-factly, the Blackthorn armour and unnatural energies twisting your voice into a sinister growl. ”It is two of your Emperors that I have had my hand in slaying.”

Saint-Captain Ara von Ellisburg readies her stance again, surprisingly intact after you had struck her into the cobblestones. ”You take pride in that, Cold-Eye? Just like you preen yourself over the title Killer of Children?”

”Why would I take pride in the slaying of little mortals?” Your armoured helm cocks quizzically as a hundred glowing yellow eyes peer out from the mist behind you. ”Children die easy enough.”

You extend a black armoured forearm out, as if to clutch the puny Captain’s skull in your grip and crush it with one hand. ”Now, witness true power.”

At your voice creatures burst forward from the coiling mists. Ravenous wolves leap into the fray tearing at the back of armoured legs or loose hands, shrieking bats flutter around visors blocking vision, rats scurry between legs and trip up fighters and occasionally something drags an unfortunate soul screaming into the darkness.

But the creatures of the night are not picky with their prey, or you have not yet mastered your control over them. The Grenn Trooper Pelt snarls and yelps at a misty pack of wolves, his white fur matted with blood. Trooper Crackfoot switches from fighting face-to-face with a Heigelen Guard to suddenly unwittingly fighting back-to-back with one against a horde of rats and snakes attempting to swarm them.

”Traitor!” A Heigelen Guard leaps through the mist at Corporal Saint, moonlight blade held aloft. She spits him upon her Nightblade with practiced ease, but with his dying breath he presses a glowing hand on her forearms that sets her screaming in pain. Damning evidence if there ever was that she has fallen far from the proud holy warrior days of old. Now Saint is the very thing that she used to stand against.

[1/2]
>>
>>2098165

The red-haired Heigelen Captain swats frantically at the mist, making panicked swipes at the creatures in the dark. Her posture is admirable, keeping the baying things away and suffering not so much as a scratch. But she’s scared, a primal fear that you can… smell? No. Taste is the word.

”Wh-… stand and fight, coward!” The knightly lass’ voice shakes. ”Foul daemon! W-where are you?”

Your towering figure looms before her in the shadows, great blade held aloft and red-eyes glowing with vile malice. Whenever you use your power you feel taller, stronger. Larger than life itself. You stand more than a head over the holy warrior now.

”Right here, little Neumunster Knight.”

What a brave little soldier. Short on brains, long on guts.
It was a pretty tight vote, so for the benefit of the other anons I will share the potential results of the Mercy choice.

-----------------------------------

The Siege of Kresden, Day 4. The Battle at the Western Gate.
>LT Prince inflicted 18 Damage!
>Not today, Trooper. [Lethal Casualty Ignored, -5 HP]
>LT Prince regen +1HP [14/25]
>Captain von Ellisburg is Grievously Wounded! [1/25 HP] [-15DC to Personal Combat]
>7th Platoon suffered 0 Discipline Damage [6/7]
>Heigelen Guard suffered 2 Discipline Damage [5/7]

You bend all of your will to dominating the Heigelen Captain. It takes a surprising amount of effort. You have cowed fiercer creatures than her. The Dragon ASGORGA no less.
But Asgorga was a thing of darkness himself. A creature that played by the rules of the Black Tongue. He recognised your power as a fact. As your grip over the Heigelen Knight weakens you realise something. Mortals have a stubborn streak in them, suicidal even. The Heigelen Knight doesn’t just resist your rule by your right of Power, she rejects it outright.

With gritted teeth the Beati Ara von Ellisburg shakes her head violently, red hair billowing angrily. ” Get.. out.. of my… head!” She screams as years of meditation, prayer or whatever it is the Heigelen do in their spare time finally pays off.

She charges toward you, glowing blade poised like an extension of her own body. Brave, but foolish. With a massive two-handed overswing your blade slams into her from above at the shoulder. Were it not for the height of Neumunster metalwork and blessed words in her armour, she would be paste on the cobblestones this very moment. Instead of carving into her body and making a proper bloody ruin of the uppity hero, the pauldron deflects your blow. You merely remove her left arm at the shoulder. Her body is flung aside instead of being demolished utterly. Disappointing.

All around 7th Platoon surges forward, fighting dirty as they push the enemy back to the main gateway. A Heigelen who fends off a direwolf quickly finds a dirk in his side, a holy warrior focused on the brothers in black before him falls prey to the lurking creature at his feet. All around you gain ground and they lose men.

Your massive blade sweeps up for the final blow. Your head turns slightly and you shift your weight, your sword chopping into the back of a Heigelen Guard about to finish one of your Troopers. Lokrey Brittle, an unassuming man you’ve barely spoken. But he is one of yours all the same.

"You don't get to die today, Trooper. That's against standing orders."

Trooper Lokrey 'Brittle's eyes widen under his steel visor, he shouts a warning but before you can turn the one-armed Captain Ara has gotten to her feet and delivered a wild-aimed blow to your helm. The Moonlight Blade carves clean through the helm and you feel blood trickling down the side of your face. The ugly side thankfully.

Or we could leave her behind to take care of the squad while we promote ourselves to Glory.

I wouldn't let Saint take care of a pile of dung, much less 7th Squad.

This is a woman who spent all the time after Kid's death angsting like a teenager. When there was another child that needed her attention because, you know, Jenny and Kid seemed close.

DId I mention I'm tired of Saint's bullshit?
>>
>>2102217
And the best part is...
We made her this way, anon.
>>
>>2102248
It's true up to a point.

The biggest error was probably overstimating the strength of her personality: instead of being tempered by reality, she broke under the strain.

But we've made our bed, now we lie in it.

What overabundance? There is space Opera on this board that isn't for house and Dominion, and possibly MSPQ?

If that's actually true can someone please point me in the right direction? The 40k ones don't count.
>>
>>2104232
People don't know what Space Opera is. Gotta get those politics in there!

Anons are bad at politics though (unless it's completely based on rolling for success). Have you not seen Valen Quest?

Actually now I really want Forgotten to do Space Opera.
>>
>>2102329
Best of luck Broski. Fingers crossed for no critfails.
>>
>>2105635
I've been playing Valen for two years.

>>2098378
But yea I dunno what lies you've been fed, but there is only one Space Opera on qst, plus one that could have been but is anime mecha instead. Either the people who gave you feedback absolutely hate space and everything about it and lied to get something, /anything/ else, or they're a bunch of idiots who see quests with OP pictures of planets, stars, robots plus stars or starships and believe that Space Opera means "it's sci-fi in space".
>>
>>2107107
If you want to mince words like a fag then I'll mince words.

When he asked for feedback the majority said "a lot of sci-fi"(paraphrase), which you can bet your fuckin' ass there is.

The use of the term "space opera"comes directly from QM.
>>
>>2108305
This is relevant to my interest.
Could you point me in their direction?
>>
>>2107107

Well it's running right nao fggt

Get stuck in.
>>
>>2108305
It's a pretty big distinction
>>
>>2108305
And how was I supposed to know that? Plain Sci-fi and Space Operas are very different beasts, did you want me to assume that Forgotten is unaware of the difference?
>>
Welp see you next month boss. Hope your brother is doing ok
>>
>>2110198
I will be back to it this weekend, I'll let you know through twitter and the general.

My brother is fine, full recovery. And I am in the middle of nowhere in the West Australia, inland at the mining towns.

As for the word wrangling, I'll admit I didn't know political machinations were the defining feature of space opera. I assumed something like The Fifth Element would be exactly what space opera meant. There will be sci-fi in he black Company 2230AD oneshots, but oneshots don't leave a lot of room for political dickery for or against your employer.
>>
>>2110281
It shouldn't really. Space opera is just space adventures, e.g. Buck Rogers. Politics can be there, but Machiavellian machinations aren't a defining feature.
>>
>>2108939
By reading the thread?
>>
>>2110281
Glad to hear about your brother, Forgotten.
>>
>>2110281
Fifth Element is definitely not Space Opera.

Babylon 5 definitely is.

Battlestar Galactica is debateable. Given the lack of multiple sides and melodrama I would lean towards no.

Think Knights! IN SPAAAAAAAAACE! Specifically Feudalism, resulting in heavily heirarchal power structures that are focused in civilization centres but weak on the fringes allowing for piracy, treachery, and Derring do of noble heroes or the plots if dastardly villains. Sometimes they're the same person.

Space Opera is all about big. Big empires. Big militaries. Big battles.

Ask yourself "could this fit in 40k?" and the answer should be yes.

Dune is a good example of a more political based Space Opera.

Legend of Galactic Heroes is quintessential Space Opera.

Gundam is often Space Opera but your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't quite say Robotech is, except the novels definitely are.
>>
>>2110300
Buck Rodgers had tons of politics. Especially the second season which was very Star Trek with how it had them interacting with various cultures and clashing ideologies.

Star Trek is classic Space Opera itself. DS9 is my fave though.

But yeah maybe politics is the wrong term, but large scale examination of and conflict between different ideals is a must. Usually that ends in politics.

>GAINED ITEM: Hero’s Head
“I swear by the Mother, sir, she’s still in there! Oh Gods… ”

The Heigelen Captain stands defiant, her one remaining arm struggling to wield her weapon with something approaching her previous skill. The Moonlight Blade wobbles, the Captain stumbles to the side. Everything in this world revolves around blood, and she has lost far too much.

With a casualness that shows your utter contempt you use your greatsword like the tip of a lance. You don’t even bother to parry the unco-ordinated swing, the force of it not even enough to have the Moonlight Blade leave anything more than a scratch on your armour. Your Sword of Sovereignty, as much a symbol of your rank as it is a tool of murder, is sent spearing through her thigh and out the other side. So great is the blow that it sticks through the corpse of a fallen Yellow Dog behind her, pinning her in place.

”Beati Kor-gkh” The Imperial Guard opens her mouth to cry out but your gauntlet lashes out, a cruel blow crushing her larynx. It comes as a constant surprise to you how feeble the human body is when you hit it just right.

She is left to choke and gurgle for precious air, the Moonlight Blade clattering to the stone as her remaining hand clutches at her throat. It’s hard to face death with dignity in the best of circumstances, never mind when you’re trying to force yourself to take a breath. With a disturbing level of tenderness, obscene compared to the practiced violence you just demonstrated, you pull her hand away. Gripping her remaining arm in one gauntlet, you use your free hand to rip your greatsword out of her thigh. Unfortunately you miscalculate and with a wet rip Ava von Ellisburg is left with two limbs instead of four. Understandably, the holy warrior faints from shock.

”Oh no, you don’t get to die just yet.” You use your power to heal her arm and leg. Enough to stop the bleeding at least. The Heigelen’s panicked eyes shoot wide open, darting around before eventually fixating on the cold slit of your helm. There is nothing but blackness in there. ”There is still work to be done.”

As the foul dark mists close in all around shrouding the two of you, your great two-handed blade is wielded more like a scalpel than a sword. Had the plucky Captain any breath left, she would have used all of it to scream.

Elsewhere in the Western Gate Courtyard

”Stick together you fekking idiots.” Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster snarls as she jabs at a Heigelen Trooper. ”They ain’t got the numbers and no fekking way am I having to stare at your ugly corpse mugs when the Big Boss raises you up for the next lot.”

”Fekking Mother-of-a-Mongrel, matey. That was close!” Trooper Vendis Durvano pulls Trooper Schuster out of the way as Trooper Nissar Belhamun pours blue flame into another Heigelen that has Trooper ‘Smiles’ on the backfoot. The Wildborn seems appropriately hesitant to get in range of their burning hand-magik ever again given his past experience.

”Sadiqi, where is Prince-Emir??” Another burst of blue flame at two more approaching Heigelen that broke through the Yellow Dogs ranks, but their shields protect them from the flames. ”I am not be keeping this up for the forever.”

”Lance-Corporal Hida!” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus bellows, the grizzled Neumunster veteran’s voice ringing as clearly over the bloody courtyard as any parade ground. ”Pull Saint’s squad back, they’re being overwhelmed! Lance-Corporal Murder can hold the left!”

”Yes, Corporal!” The tall, brawny new addition to 2nd Squad nods and turns, her auburn pony tail trailing from under her helm is the only hint that the fighter leaping between combatants is a female. Cairsun the Morning Light clears a path for her, his enchanted blade carving through Heigelen Moonlight Blade and warded armour alike with ease. Formidable though their weapons may be, Cairsun's relic is clearly on a different level altogether. Older, mightier, magic.

”And get me Hirstun!” ‘Jack’ shouts after them, no idea whether he has been heard. Ah well, there comes a time in any melee where orders won’t help a damn bit. It’s kill the foe in front of you or be killed. When the killing stops and you’re still alive, that’s when you know if you’ve won or not.

”Joker! Jok-oof, get out of my fekking way, mutt!” CPL Marcus shoves a stumbling Yellow Dog aside as he looks around for Trooper Joker. A whinger and a malingerer she may be, but she’s the one whose lead the other will follow if the rank bites it. Not that Marcus planned on dying today. ”Joker, we need to cut off the-“

”The what? Boss, did you just have a stroke? Time and fekking place, give me a break boss. What are we cutting off?” Trooper ‘Joker’ turns to see what CPL Marcus is staring at. What she sees causing her to gulp audibly.

The men of 2nd Squad slowly back away at the sight of your gore-spattered Blackthorn Armour. You are taller than they remember, easily standing eye-to-eye with Trooper Smiles. The Yellow Dogs scurry aside as you stomp between them, one virtually scrambling with a whimper to escape the pitch-black mist that coils from your cloak and the edges of your armour. CPL Saint and 3rd Squad pause from addressing the most grievously wounded and march behind you, the ex-Heigelen’s eyes fixated forward with a steely expression. Saint does not appear aghast or shocked as she might once have, she has grown accustomed to the reality. War is hell, it favours only those that embrace it.

”Fek me…” Ludos Clayton, Captain of the Yellow Dogs, mutters. A chewed toothpick drops from his slack-jawed lips.

At the sight of you the fighting around the gateway almost pauses entirely. An unspoken agreement as mercenaries of the Yellow Dog, Kreigstrom and Heigelen holy warrior back a step or two away from each other, their eyes trained on you rather than each other.

”I am Lieutenant Prince of the Black Company. Look upon my works, lackeys of dead Emperors, and despair.”
The grotesque mound in your right hand clatters to the cobblestone with a sickening wet sound, held together more by the chainmail links than the muscle and sinew that once comprised a human body. It is barely recognisable as a corpse, one might be forgiven at first glance for mistaking the mess of flayed flesh and offal as a bundle of bloody rags. Some of it looks... gnawed upon.

”Is that…”

”Oh merciful Saints…” One of the armoured knights mutters, the man next to him leans over and retches in his own visor.

”Hold your ground! Stand together, Fur Das Vaterland!” A Neumunster officer with a heavy border accent tries to rally the shaken men. Some even listen, decades of training overriding the even the basic primal fear that threatens to unman them.

Aloft in your left hand dangles the head of Captain Alba von Ellisburg, identifiable only by the locks of red hair wrapped around your gauntlet and forearm. Much of the skin has been ripped clean off the face, the harsh beauty of their leader turned into a hideous trophy.

Her white eyes fly open.

”Judas wept.” The Heigelen Lieutenant’s face goes slack as his expired commander’s milky orbs seem to gaze directly at him, acknowledging his imminent death in the varied manner that most mortals do. Mortals can comprehend death, even run the risk of it with glee. Very few can ever truly accept it as an imminent certainty.

”Kreigstrom.” Your dark gaze sweeps over your brothers in black. Most meet your gaze steadily, hard killers to the core. But some shiver, afraid. Weak. ”Kill them.”

Your men charge forward with a vicious warcry.

>VICTORY
>But an old comrade is no more.

Within seconds the melee turns into a rout as the basic survival instinct of the combatants overwhelms the loftier notions of duty, honour and glorious last stands. Those tend to lose their appeal when the evidence of the reward for their efforts dangles from your bloody gantlet before them.

LCPL Lerrek Jurgensen laughs like a loon, wild hair flaying about as wildly as his long-axe into the shuffling mass of Heigelen. Knight-of-the-Line ‘Spitfire’ Spicario doesn’t even have to bother with aiming as she fires pistol after pistol in the mad press of Neumunster bodies.

The battle here is lost. Most, the smarter ones, turn to run back out the Western Gate. Mask blocks the way, chipped aged sword held at the ready against the rush. The Heigelen fight more like rats backed into a corner than disciplined men, frantic swipes of their Moonlight Blades pierce the Red Undead’s husk half a dozen times. Yet not even their holy weapons can grant this ancient warrior his final rest.

Cairsun the Morning Light joins him, flaming sword reaping a bloody toll on any that try to flee past them. Then Corporal Saint and her select killers reinforce them. From that point, not a single Heigelen makes it out alive. The honoured Imperial Guard as a whole lost 1 man out of every 2 in service that day.

”Phew, looks like we did it. Thanks for the save back then, ‘matey’.” Trooper Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster’s burnt face crinkles as she turns around to punch her old drinking buddy in the arm. He is nowhere to be seen. ”Durvano? Come on, you dick. Don’t mess around.”

Soon all of 2nd Squad is looking for their missing companion. Everyone has been accounted for except the ex-pirate. And he wouldn’t have run off, too much good loot to be had around here.

Sadiqi, Emir-Corporal… you think the night things take him?” Trooper Nissar Belhamun whispers to Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus and Smiles.

”The odds of that are extremely low.” The Wildborn grumbles. ”The Lieutenant would not permit these things to bring harm to his own.”

”Maybe. These… ‘powers’ are still new to the Liuetenant.” CPL 'Jack' Marcus mutters. "Maybe Mask would know, he's been on the raw deal of that sort of thing for a while now."

The ancient warrior shakes his head and points silently at one figure squished in amongst a heap of dead.

”Oh shit. Oh shit. Shitshitshit, Durvano don’t do this to me.” Trooper ‘Joker’ drops her gear and sprints over, lifting off the corpses and trying to pull her comrade up. In the mad press it appears that many were simply trampled in the desperation to escape. Durvano was unlucky enough to get caught up in it, beaten to a pulp by steel boots running for their lives. ”No… no come on, buddy.”

”No! You can’t die you piece of shit, you still owe me like… 3 Gelt or something!” Trooper ‘Schuster’s left eye had their tear ducts burnt away long ago, but the right one makes up for it. Wet . ”We was gonna see the ocean together… kick back on a beach with a pouch full of coin and wine and… and… Oh Gods…”

”Have the cultists bring back the dead to fight again.” You look from Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus down at a sobbing Trooper ‘Joker’ clutching the broken, trampled body of one of your old comrades in her arms. Weak. But still… the words leave a foul taste in your mouth ”…all of them.”

”…Sir.” Not the first distasteful order CPL ‘Jack’ has heard. Likely won’t be the last.

An explosion from the North catches your attention. ”Later. Corporal Saint, with me.”

”Yes, sir.” Corporal ‘Saint’ spares a glance for the weeping Caroline Schuster, and lays a hand on her should. ”I’m sorry, Schuster.

”I don’t give two shits what the Officers say, Durvano.” You overhear Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster mutter under her breath, the burnt half of her face crinkling as she fails to lower her voice enough to go unheard by you. ”Don’t you let them turn me into one of those things, you hear me? If I croak it on those bloody walls today, you burn my corpse.”

”Easy there matey, you’re not going to cark it out there. Cap’n is only-“ The ex-pirate Trooper Vendis Durvano

”Promise me, shithead.” Trooper Schuster sounds scared, everyone knows the Free Alliance has been building up for today’s assault. ”I don’t want to end up like… Seven-hundred Saints, just promise alright?”

”Alright, alright. Harpin’ hurricanes, matey, stop scaring me. I swears on me mother’s life.” Durvano says solemnly, then considers Schuster’s sceptical look and decides to rephrase it. ”On me one good eye, then. Now shut the fek up, Below it girl. The Cap-er, Lootnant is right fekking there.”

”Oh shit. He didn’t hear me, right?”
---------------------------------------------

>”…” Didn’t hear what? Officer’s should know when to turn a blind eye. You’re not going to punish soldiers for being scared. [Experience]

>”Belay that talk, Troopers. Everyone does their bit, living or dead.” Other fallen brothers are already risen again to fight for you all, Schuster doesn’t get a pass if her time comes. [Elite]

>”I didn’t hear shit. And, if I survive today, I didn’t see shit either.” You’d never defy the Captain. Not to her face. [Clever]

>”You die out there today Schuster then sure as pigshit I’ll have you whipped before the cultists ever start on you.” If fear of you is what keeps your lads alive, so be it. [Courage]

The Big One, Day Four Mid-Morning, The Northern Wall

The scene plays out before you like a macabre reimiagination of the most virulent Chevalisse cleric’s vision of the furnace of Below.

Men run screaming every which way doused in flames, the fire making it almost impossible to distinguish friend from foe. The Ajiyimad turncoats and the Black Company Rangers put most of them down anyway, as a mercy.

”Fekking ‘ell.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ coughs in the smoke. ”The girl didn’t do a half bad job of causing a mess. Good on her!”

”Hmmm.” You’re eyeing the crumbling battlements of the Northern Wall section. It’s more like a steeply sloping pile of rubble than an actual wall now.

>Northern Wall is [COLLAPSING]. It can only ever reach [SECURE] levels, never [STALWART]

In the centre of the breach, motionless in the flames, looms the Albani Warmachine. Blackened with ashes, layered with dried and burnt blood, it resembles a walking charnel house. With smoke so thick it causes your men to cough from here, the child Legless Jenny must be suffocating.

”++INCEPE PROTOCOL RẰZBOI-++~She looked so ~pretty~ at the fair~++DUSMAN DETECTAT++”
The voice carries from the breach, intimidating Albani-machine voice and haunting singing at different intervals.

Something is wrong. At a gesture your accompanying NCOs pause. ”Sergeant Bad Hand, how much heat can an Albani Warmachine take?”

~a ring of flowers in her hair…~

”Hmmm. Plenty, I’d say. That’s some fine runic-treated steel they’ve forged them with. You’d have to hit it with something molten, or dragonfire…” Your trusted second scratches his unkempt mustache thoughfully. ”Course, the pilots would be roasted alive by any heat long before the actual machine gave way. Lil’ midgets cooked inside their own contraptions heheheh. Use to smell like…”

”++DURERE PREA MULT++” The odd Albani machine-speak is followed by a pained screech, something resembling a screaming girl and the scrape of steel.

SGT Bad Hand pauses from his scratching, wrinkling his nose looking between you and Saint. ”Oh shit.”

Ah, so that’s how it is.

”I’m afraid I had little other choice.” Cultist Demagogue Jale appears at your side, watching the motionless behemoth in the flames. ”The pilot was fighting well, but it was only a matter of time until the Neumunster overwhelmed her. I had to do it, you see?”

“Jale, what is the meaning of this?” You don’t need the Blackthorn armour for your voice to sound harsh or menacing, you’re plenty angry as it is. ”What did you do?”

”Made her extremely deadly in the short term. In the long term…” The cultist shrugs, looking disappointed if anything. ”The extreme circumstances made a mess of it, I’m afraid it looks like the host’s soul and some of the Albani runic programs merged and… well it appears to be unusually painful. Certainly the subject is in no state to take orders.”

Another agonised screech emphasizes his words, metal arms clawing at the faceplate as whatever Legless Jenny has become bashes it’s head against the stone battlements. The whole wall shakes.

You have made some harsh decisions in the past, sacrificed the lives of some of your men to save others. But you have never literally sacrificed them. It sounds like Jenny was still in the fight, could still maybe have come out of it alive. But the cultists didn’t want a maybe, they wanted a certainty. This abomination secured victory at the Northern Wall.

And what is more, Demagogue Jale is NOT Black Company.

”Fekking piece-of- I’LL KILL YOU!” Corporal Saint leaps at the cultist, obsidian Nightblade drawn and spewing black smoke.

”Negative, Corporal Saint.” Your voice rasps, nowadays you wonder if it’s even the Blackthorn armour doing it anymore. ”We need him alive. Alive and unharmed.”

Saint freezes immediately, she would have struck down Demagogue Jale long before he had finished the incantation he hurriedly cancels out now. Saint is furious, but long harsh lessons have taught her not to let her emotions get the best of her. ”Yes, sir. As you wish. Permission to kill him later?”

”Perhaps. We’ll see.”You acknowledge that, in Demagogue Jale’s boots, maybe you would have done the same. The lines you would and wouldn’t cross seemed to have blurred and faded away, more than ever lately. There is no price too steep, no sacrifice too great in the struggle for victory. You can only hope that you do not forget that the purpose of a victory is not to win, but to get your men through the day alive.

But even so… only YOU get to make those decisions. Should the cultist or anyone else cross you and harm your men again they will pay for it most dearly.

”They are MY soldiers, cultist. Mine”. You have no need to try to intimidate the robed magik practitioner. He is clearly scared without putting on a show. ”I tolerate your meddling because it is the Captain’s orders. Touch my Troopers without her permission or mine again, and I will ensure your passage into the Dark Father’s embrace is made as painful and excruciating as possible.

”U-understood, my lord.” ‘My Lord’, you like that.

”Ouch, that’s a right bloody mess we have on our hands here.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grins, looking as happy as a pig in muck. ”We’ve taken some losses, going to be a tough slog from here on without them.”

Across the rubble, from outside the walls, another horrible wailing sound joins the pained moans of the unholy warmachine. Bagpipes.

The day is far from over.

----------------------------------------------------

As it is your Kreigstrom are dangerously close to being severely understrength.

>”They fought well, the wounded need their rest to recover. They’ve earnt it.” [Black Heart: Experience] [Walking Wounded leave combat for the day, -3DC to Battle Progress for every Trooper you’re short of 20 by.]

Currently at 19 not counting Walking Wounded, but that number can increase quickly. CPL Saint is one of those wounded. On the other hand, your wounded would not contributed but would be ‘safe’ for the day. Assuming the line is held.

”Everyone fights, no one quits. If the dead can fight, so can they. We don’t have the luxury of rest.” The time for half-measures has long since passed. You’ve watched comrades who have fought hard, given everything. And they have been risen to fight again. If Kresden falls, everyone dies. The Company dies. You will not accept that.

”Hmph.” SGT Bad Hand grunts as he lights up a smoke. ”When -did- we have the luxury of rest?”

Saint hisses in pain, looking at the burnt flesh around her wrists. She takes a seat as Supply medics scurry about. Some loot the bodies, some finish off the dying of both sides, some even tend to the wounded.

”You can still fight?” It comes out sounding like a question, despite your intentions to make it an order.

”Yes, sir. I can fight.” She says with a determined nod. Corporal ‘Saint’ grimaces as Black Company Supply orderlies washes her burns, covering them in soft cloth. The cloth resembles a torn up Neumunster flag. ”Besides, my squad needs me.”

You’re proud of her. Concerned yes, and glad to still be capable of such a human weakness, but proud all the same.

You place a steadying blackened gauntlet on her shoulder. She is one of the few who does not shy away from you. She used to remind you of your humanity, and in the process lost much of hers. And you have made her stronger for it. It is a sick, happenstance dependence you have upon one another. In a better, saner world she might hate you for what you’ve done to her and what you have become. Was it her naive idealism that drew you to her? You used to find it annoying, now ironically you miss it.

Prince is what we have made him, I've been liking black prince since the start, imagining it was where he was like the distant protector of his men, but to everyone else he was a monster.
I'm not happy with how uncaring he became of everything so fast when literally his whole ride to being the monster he now is stems from his desire to protect those around him.

He's always loved the company, this whole "my mortals are weak and the weak must be purged" schtick is a bit off, but on the whole I regret nothing

Well, Prince hasn't become completely uncaring - just take a look at his reaction when he ordered to retrieve Durvano's body, or his last musings on Saint.

At best, Prince still has some lingering humanity (for now). At worst, he has enough sense to realize that his actions are distasteful.

Even his 'weak' comments don't seem to hold that much malice, and speaking of them they're probably the logical conclusion of his draconian attitude as an officer and 'corruption' of Saint's idealism.
