The first thread 5 didn't get archived, so going to be posting the remnants of that to get things up to speed.

When you wake up, it’s straight to business, packing your bag and scoffing your massive breakfast down. Moest’s already prepared your rations for the trip, handing a sack full of cured meat, pickled vegetables, cheese, and leftover stew to Theo for the journey. You fill your waterskin, strap your zweihander to your back, and sling your bag over your shoulder, meeting Moest and the others outside in preparation to leave. Moest stands stoically with a hand resting on his sword and the other holding the map he showed you earlier, his poise serving as an anchor for your collective confidence.

Old man Moest gives you all a once over, sizing each of you up and handing you the map of Camewell and the route to the beast’s den. “Hmph. Wouldn’t call ya proper warriors yet, but yar gonna have to be ready regardless. Not many could’ve done what ya three have this past few days though, and like I said last night, ya should be proud of what ya accomplished.”

You nod, genuinely appreciating Moest’s praise, though Theo is still on edge. “What if it’s not enough? If we do fail, surely you’ll evacuate Hearthspring or finish the job yourself?”

Moest shakes his head, growing a bit frustrated with Theo’s worrying. “I’ll see what happens if it comes to that. Tell ya what, if ya don’t fookin’ fail, and do what ya set out to do, ya won’t have to worry about any of the shite! If ya use the skills ya learnt properly, and don’t falter in the face of death, ya will persevere. From now on everything is in your hands, and if ya fail ya have only yarself to blame. Make sure that doesn’t happen.”

You all reflect on Moest’s words as you quickly double check your things, making sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Theo still looks unsure, but you’ve come to terms with your fear of the possessed, and thus you attempt to console him. “Come on man, as if our training hasn’t been enough. Me and Sam can do shit that we thought was impossible only a few days ago, and we’d only ever heard of Earth magic in passing until then as well. Don’t sell yourself short, cause we’ve come pretty far.”

Theo nods, mulling over your words as you go over your inventory. After going over your weapons, you realise that the breaking sword you took from the fallen ranger is still embedded in the possessed’s back. You may have been doing your training with the zweihander, but you’re still skilled enough with the breaking sword that it’d be worth having one with you.

“Actually, mind if I take a breaking sword with me as well? Doesn’t hurt to have another weapon on me.”

Moest nods and makes a vague hand gesture at Bole. The golem quickly runs back into the shack, fetching an old, rusty breaking sword from the cabinet of weapons.

“Would give ya my sword lad, but I might end up needing it. That one’s a bit worse for wear, but it’ll do the job.”

You take the sword and strap it to your waist, giving Moest a nod. You go through a mental checklist before you go, checking to see if you’ve forgot anything else of importance.

Sam speaks up, not really sure how to pick his words. “I j-just wanted to say… Thanks. Thanks for saving us, giving us the training that we needed, but most of all, thanks for staying out here and keeping watch. You know I don’t really know what to make of The Reckoning and Vaul and all this other crazy shit, but even I can tell you’re doing a service to humanity by staying out here and keeping shit like the possessed under control.”

Moest laughs, appreciating Sam’s words. “Fookin’ hell lad, yar making me out like I’m a saint or some shite like that. Ya saved yarselves anyway, and for the rest of it I’m just doing my duty.”

Moest then claps his hands, waving you all off dismissively as he turn to hobble back to the house. “And now it’s time to do yars. Enough chit chat, it’s time to get a move on. I expect ya to be back tomorrow afternoon. And don’t forget the fookin’ antler!”

You watch as Moest hobble up the stairs, Sam taking out the map that Moest gave you as he tries to orient himself. “Looks like we’re heading this way then, make sure to keep an eye out for that tree. If the canopy’s too think we might have to climb up a bit, but no biggie.”

You and Theo nod in agreement, all of you setting off towards the beast’s den.

You keep a pretty good pace, though not too quick as to exhaust yourselves. You wouldn’t really call the atmosphere grim, but you leave each other to your own thoughts as you walk, the pressure of the situation weighing down on you all. You stop only twice the whole day, once for a lunch of cold, leftover stew, and again in the early afternoon for a quick rest. The sky’s just beginning to turn orange as you spy the tree that Moest told you about above the canopy, easily 10 metres taller than the rest. In stark contrast to your surroundings, the tree is dead, with no leaves clinging to its branches at all. As you get closer, the foliage around your starts to turn yellow and get progressively thinner, some sort of unknown force or disease killing the trees.

Theo gulps and puts his hand in a pouch on his belt, no doubt clutching a handful of pebbles. “We’re in its territory now for sure. We gotta come up with a plan of attack, how’re we gonna go about this?”

You answer Theo, a plan already formulating in your head. “We’ll go in like we did last time I reckon, head in stealthy and try to get the jump on it.”

Sam nods. “Sounds good. Should we wait for it to get darker, or think we should go in now?”

You respond. “No point waiting till later. The possessed’s probably got better night vision than us anyway, even if we’re using the lantern.”

Theo nods solemnly, steeling himself for the encounter. “Alright, looks like this is it then.”

Sam smiles, relishing the adrenaline. “Oh yeah man, this is the real deal. Best be on our toes.”

You move deeper into the possessed’s territory, the foliage becoming so sparse and sickly that there’s eventually none left at all. You start to take it slower when all the trees around you are completely dead, dropping into more of a crouch as you make sure not to step on any of the wilted, dead leaves that blanket the ground.

As you sneak forward, you start to extend your perception of flow outwards, activating flow sense. Immediately you feel something amiss, the cosmic pulse you’ve grown accustomed to completely absent from your surroundings.

You whisper to Theo and Sam, the development making you even more cautious. “The flow of everything around us, it’s gravitating towards an epicentre. It’s leaking through the roots of all the trees, and getting sucked in through the ground.”

Sam eyes go a bit wider, realising the magnitude of power that would take. “No fucking way man. The trees have been on the way to dying for like 500 metres. What the fuck is that thing powering up for?”

Theo pipes up shakily. “It’s been getting ready to shatter, and it should be just about ready if Moest was right.” He thinks for a second as he considers the situation. “You said it’s getting sucked up through the ground right? If it’s amassing this much power, it must have some kind of connection to the ground, maybe even rooted in, which would mean it can’t move.”

Theo has an interesting point, and one that you agree with. “That makes sense. If the possessed could pull off something this crazy with flow easily, it would’ve easily taken all of us out last time. It’s probably expending all of its effort into gathering flow.”

You can almost hear the anticipation in Sam’s voice. “Well, at least the fucker’s making it easy for us. All we gotta do is follow the flow right? Nice and simple.”

Sam’s enthusiasm is infectious, and you start to smile too, truly feeling the adrenaline kick in. The concentration of flow starts to get stronger as you near the origin of the vacuum, and through the dead trees and spindly branches, you can make out the massive trunk of the tree Moest told you about, split jaggedly in half by some type of natural phenomena.

You can’t see inside the tree, but you can tell all the flow is accumulating onto it as the epicentre. You’re certain the possessed’s inside, hiding in the recesses of the tree, though there aren’t really any signs of activity from within the trunk.

[You’re not at 4/5 essence. For each action, write-in if you want to utilise surge or flow sense.]

Also, here's a map of Camewell as a whole. Major cities and towns have their names labelled, though small villages like Hearthspring don't. I'm going to leave it up to you to figure out where Hearthspring is on the map based on what you already know.

Haven't finished off the key yet, but brown is mountains, light green is plains and grassland, dark green is dense forest. Smaller circles are towns, bigger circles are cities, and the two squares are capital cities. Villages and small settlements are represented as black dots, and only publicly known settlements and landmarks are marked on the map.

We voted to prepare a trap last time
>>
>>2093546
How are we going to trap it if it's hiding away in its tree? Trap the opening and force it out by setting fire to the tree or something?
>>
>>2093546
Haven't got it in my notes, but I do recall anons voting to have Theo set up a pitfall trap then attempting to lure the beast out and into it.

I'm going to start with that just to get the ball rolling. Writan'

You analyse the situation, trying to think of the best way to confront the beast. “Well, we might as well set the terrain to our advantage if the possessed hasn’t noticed us yet.” You look up, seeing the orange light shine unhindered past the bare tree branches. “We gotta be quick as well, we’re running out of daylight.”

Theo nods, and points his middle three fingers towards a patch of land just outside the entrance to the massive, split tree. Slowly, the earth eases open to form a circular pit, which you’d estimate to be about two metres in diameter and up to your chest in depth. The roots and branches of the giant tree ward off any other trees from growing to close to it, forming a natural, open ring around the tree to lure the beast through, having it run straight into the pit.

Theo then walks up to the pit and raises his left hand, gripping his staff hard. Slowly, earthen spikes rise up from the bottom of the pit, ensuring a painful fall for any that fall into it. Sweat pours from Theo’s brow after he’s done, visibly a bit drained. You’ve never seen him fashion spikes from Earth before, and you’d wager that it was first time he’d attempted anything like that.

Theo nods, and you and Sam sneak around the pit, to just outside the entrance of the tree. As you get closer you start to hear ragged panting from inside the hollow, the deep, raspy breaths obviously laboured.

Peeking inside, you see the possessed for the first time since the massacre at the lake. The dark, charred hollow is illuminated by a soft, red light emanating from the possessed itself. The abomination practically glows with energy; Dirty, red veins throbbing in time with the surrounding flow’s natural pulse, not unlike some grotesque heart. It crouches in a weird, hunched over position, its antlers deeply rooted into the ground as it sucks up the surrounding flow of the forest.

The possessed is extremely worse for wear though, covered in burn marks and cuts from your previous encounter. With its back to you, you can clearly see the sword you plunged through its chest, the wound severely agitated and infected.

[Remember, if you want to use flow arts (formerly known as methods) such as flow sense and surge, include it in your vote.]

You make eye contact with Sam, pointing towards the possessed and miming a sword swing. He looks at you sceptically, but doesn’t object. Weighing up your decision a little, he eventually nods and draws his spear, ready to back up your retreat.

Gingerly, you creep forward, extremely careful not to step on any twigs or leaves that scatter the hollow. The possessed’s heavy rasping echoes off the walls of the trunk, and as you step through the opening proper you begin to realise how cramped of a space the hollow actually is. What you didn’t expect was the humidity and heat within the alcove, the possessed’s body heat warming the space like an oven. Sweat starts to bead on your brow, but you persevere, inching your way forward with all the concentration you can muster.

Time seems to slow down in the intensity of the moment, and after what feels like an eternity you find yourself about half a metre away from the possessed. Watching its tight skin stretch as it breathes is almost sickening, the glowing liquid coursing through its veins visibly flowing as its heart beats. At this point, the beads of sweat on your brow have turned into torrents, water pouring down your face due to the combination of the heat and utter intensity.

Slowly, you begin to draw your sword. Your heart stops as the metal begins to rasp against the scabbard, though the beast doesn’t stir. For a moment you take a break from reality, focusing your attention inwards. You bring forth your flow, the tell-tale feeling of it coursing through your veins having become a familiar sensation in the previous days. You open your eyes and heave your zweihander over your head, pushing your flow into your arms as you bring the massive blade arcing do-
CRACK

Splinters rain down onto your face as you’re the tip of your sword cleaves through bark and wood. Instinctively closing your eyes to shield them from the debris, you follow with your swing, the sword still coming down onto the possessed. It’s to very little avail though, as you lost most of your momentum cleaving through the ceiling of the hollow. Opening your eyes, you see you swing was off its mark in your temporary blindness, missing the sword jutting through the thing’s chest and instead cutting a bit into its lower back.

GWWWWRRRRRRROOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

The possessed immediately roars to life, ripping its antlers out of the ground. You’re taken completely off guard as the possessed slams its fist into your chest, knocking you across the hollow.

Out the corner of your eye you see Sam spring into action, yelling for Theo to come and help.

Yeah I know, but I don't really have many other time frames I can run though because irl stuff. If traffic to the quest doesn't improve though, I'll try and muck around with running at different times.

I think the most important thing for me atm is keeping a consistent schedule, and hopefully that'll attract a consistent enough player base.

Eyes watering, you immediately scuttle away from the shrieking blur rushing towards you. You just manage to avoid getting gored on the possessed’s antlers, using surge to half roll, half kick away from the path of its charge. You here a thunderous CRACK that echoes throughout the hollow as the possessed crashes into the wall, sending splinters and pieces of bark flying. However, the possessed rips its antlers free and recovers quickly, not allowing you any time to try and stand up. Tears stream down your cheeks as a result of the debris in your eyes, and all you can do is frantically scuttle away from the possessed and towards the light.

Your ass scoots along the ground as you desperately kick away from the lanky, grey blur, though you quickly realise you’re completely fucked when the possessed charges at you again. Still, you pitifully backpedal as quickly as you can.

Everything starts to slow down, just like the first time you encountered the beast at the lake and jumped over its charge, and it for the first time in this whole altercation it truly dawns on you that this could well be your demise. You don’t expect the primal terror that wells up within you, your heart dropping as you feel your back hit something solid.

Though there’s more light this side of the hollow, you still can’t make out the individual branches of the possessed’s antlers. The terror you felt instantly dissipates as you feel the solid mass behind you shift, Sam lowering himself into a more stable stance. The possessed roars as it lowers its head to gore you, but the sound dies in its throat as Sam expertly weaves the speartip past its antlers, the possessed driving the speartip into its skull.

ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

The possessed’s head-splitting scream is only amplified by the hollow, your hands reactionarily clamping to your ears to ease the pain. Sam drives the spear deeper, wrenching upwards and free before the possessed can twist it out of his grip. Sam grabs you by the collar, pulling you to your feet as you both bolt towards the light.

Sprinting outside, you take a moment to wipe your eyes with your sleeve, clearing your vision. Already the possessed’s uncannily human shriek is dying down, light flooding your vision when you emerge from the hollow. You grab onto the edge of the hollow’s entrance as you swivel to your left, seeing Sam a moment ahead of you running around Theo’s pit. The mage himself waits from across the pit, a ring of pebbles ready to fire.

You have a split-second decision to make. If you run around the pit, chances are you’ll be too slow and the possessed will see the pit, or charge around it as it follows you. However, if you use surge to jump over the pit, the possessed may not notice in its tunnel vision, and if it jumps will be a sitting duck for Theo.

You only have two quick strides to allocate flow into your legs, releasing it into the surrounding muscles just as you leap. For a moment, you don’t think about the spike filled pit beneath you, or the possessed on your back; You just fly, feeling the wind whip past your face.

Your outstretched leg hits the opposite side of the pit, stumbling, though you’re able to catch yourself before you trip over. Half a second later the beast comes charging through the doorway, nostrils flaring as it wildly turns to face you. Meeting its gaze, it’s the first time this whole fight you’ve truly looked it in the eyes. Seeing such intense malice would’ve once unnerved you greatly, though now it only solidifies your desire to put this thing down once and for all. You yell at it, daring it to come and kill you, to which it promptly responds with a roar of its own. The possessed breaks into a sprint instead of charging, falling for your taunt and keeping eye contact the whole time. Out the corner of your eye, you see Theo retract the ring of floating pebbles back into his hand, and instead grip his staff with two hands.

You grin as the possessed runs straight into the pit. First, its concentration breaks as its first foot hits thin air, realising that it’d run into a trap. Looking down at the spikes, it quickly compensates by using its other foot to launch off the corner of the ledge, soaring over the gap.

You’d always thought of the possessed as little more than a mindless abomination driven by its need to devour, though now you’d think otherwise. You can pretty much pinpoint the moment the possessed knew it was fucked, its eyes going wide with surprise. Theo lets the staff slide through his hands until he holds it like a bat, swinging to send a boulder hurtling through the air. The possessed gets hit right in the chest, the boulder exploding into pieces as it collides with it in mid-air. From the apex of its leap the possessed begins to drop, landing on its back. The crunch when the abomination hits the spikes is sickening, the short spikes impaling various parts of its body. The thing shrieks in pain once again, and you can tell it’s almost done for.

You take a moment to catch your breath. Theo pants heavily to your right, now almost completely exhausted. He was already knackered from making the pit, and at this stage he’s running on empty. At your left, further along the circumference of the pit, Sam stands brandishing his spear.

The possessed writhes in the pit, breaking the spikes that pierce its back. You quickly yell to Sam and Theo to surround the pit, attempting to keep the possessed at bay. Sam looks at you inquisitively, and you realise that he still must be deafened by the possessed’s roaring in the hollow earlier, since he couldn’t cover his ears like you did, and thus you point to where he should stand instead.

The possessed breaks the spikes in its immediate vicinity, glancing around frantically as it sizes you up. You have no idea how it’s standing with the amount if damage it has suffered over the past two fights. Burn wounds cover its body, amongst the numerous cuts from you and the rangers, blood gushing from the spear wound in its head, earthen spikes impaling the whole back of its body, and the breaking sword still impaled through its chest, thrust even deeper by its fall into the pit. Despite the damage, its still looks at you three like a predator looks at prey, and by looking at those eyes you’re convinced the thought of backing down hasn’t even crossed its mind.

Eyes desperately darting between you, Sam, and Theo, it suddenly tries to jump out the pit, sizing up Theo as the weakest link from his evident exhaustion. Theo however is ready, and with a swing of his staff sends another boulder hurtling towards the possessed, once again hitting it out of the air. You act quickly as the impact sends the beast flying towards the space between you and Theo, seizing the opportunity to strike the abomination whilst it’s off guard.

The possessed lands on its side, rolling further away from the pit. It braces itself to get up, arms outstretched, though it’s too late and you’re already in the motion of swinging your sword. You spy its lanky arm pushing off the ground in an attempt to stand up, and with an upwards, arcing swing you cleave right through it, severing its right arm just above the elbow.

This time, the beast doesn’t roar in pain, instead focused single-mindedly on its survival. From the opposite side Sam comes charging through, spear brandished. He gores the possessed, using his momentum to drive the spear deep into its ribcage. However, this time Sam was the one charging towards danger, and with memories of the spear wound Sam inflicted on it still fresh in its mind the possessed strikes, digging its claws deep into Sam’s leg as it thrashes about on the end his spear. The possessed writhes, completely unaffected at the pain, and its teeth gnash as it turns its head to face you, wanting nothing more than to see you bleed.

Sam barely even reacts, completely focused on holding the possessed at bay, no doubt utilising insouciance to ignore the pain. In the distance Theo gasps for breath, hunched over with his hands on his knees. The time to end this is now.

Spittle flies as the possessed snaps at you, though you pay it no mind. Hefting your zwiehander up, you bring use every last bit of your essence to redirect your flow to your arms. You raise the blade above your head, and swiftly bring it down onto the possessed’s neck, cleaving through it cleanly and following through until your sword hits solid ground. As you behead it, the possessed’s body goes absolutely berserk, thrashing and twitching madly as the headless body goes haywire. The head rolls a short distance, driven by the possessed’s gnashing jaw pushing off the ground. You look at the head with a newfound disdain, inklings of some deep, primal disgust being roused by the unnatural movement. You watch the possessed’s eyes roll around manically for a moment, interrupted by Sam’s spear piercing its skull stilling it once and for all.

For a moment you just stand there, completely and utterly drained. You’d expected to feel some sort of triumph with your victory, or a sense of relief for the townsfolk’s safety, though standing here with the possessed’s corpse at your feet, you just feel empty. Definitely a symptom of using all your essence, since you’re practically drained.

Across for you Sam looks the same, no doubt spent from using his own flow arts. Theo leans heavily on his staff until his legs collapse from under him, no longer able to stand on his own volition. The orange light that only recently filtered through the leaves has now started to wane, giving way to night. You take a moment to look up at the first stars of the night and begin to feel a slight sense of contentment, the sliver of emotion in your current state a testament to the sense of accomplishment you’d be feeling if you’re essence wasn’t completely drained. What comes next you’ll worry about later, because all you want to do now is rest.

[Thanks for playing guys, since despite things being slow I wouldn’t be able to run this without your participation. If you lurk and have enjoyed this quest so far, please come in and vote, as it’d make running this a lot smoother and consistent. Next session will be 6pm AEST Thursday in a new thread, and as always follow on twitter for consistent announcements.]
