You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were delving through the underdepths of Eisenwand's sewers and aqueducts to investigate suspicious activity.

Well, more than suspicious now.

What started as investigating some strange blockages and disappearances turned into battling a honest to Sol golem. A particularly large and powerful one, according to Nino. And what was concerning was that since golems by nature were artificial constructs, that did not preclude the possibility of being more. Or even worse, there may be completely new threats waiting. Things were concerning enough that you had even had to send Niko to ask for assistance. Though who knew when or if they'd be able to reach you.

"This is strange." Lucina mutters to herself as your little group journeys down one of the many tunnels, the trickle of running water accompanying your footsteps on the ancient stone. "These tunnels were sealed for decades. Who could have possibly placed a golem down here?"

You just shrug. Whoever it was, you'll find out soon enough.

"Yeah! Everybody's magic is a little bit unique!" Nino adds as she skips along, the shards of the golem's core floating around her in a ring. "If we can pick up a few more samples, I should be able to narrow it down!"

"Collect a few more samples...?" Lucina sighs. "You make it sound so easy."

"The squirt makes everything look easy." Naru rolls her eyes.

"Hold up." Morgan pauses, her ears and nose twitching. "I think there's something up ahead."

"According to the map, it's another junction point." Lucina explains. "Another perfect spot for an ambush."

"I'll move ahead to scout it out." Morgan says as she readies her bow and slinks forward.

"One of us should go with her." Lucina suggests. "In these tight quarters, her mobility isn't going to do her much good."

Lucina's observation did make sense.

You nod to Lucina and start moving forward. You'll back up Morgan.

"All right, I'll stick with the others, then." Lucina nods. "We'll be right behind you."

You proceed forward as Morgan creeps into the chamber ahead. Like the last one, this one was a dizzying array of streams and rivers going not just through the floor, but flowing along the walls and even on the ceilings. Whoever built this place truly had a mind for efficiency and engineering.

"Wait a minute..." Morgan blinks in surprise.

"Watch out!" Morgan spins around, alarm in her expression. "It's a trap-"

However, before either of you can do anything, a solid wall of stone slams down over the mouth of the tunnel entrance, separating you and Morgan from the others. The last thing you see is Lucina, Nino, and Naru's shocked faces as the stone wall drops in place.

A second golem begins to pull itself from out of the ground, its eyeless face turning its gaze on the both of you.

"Damn!" Morgan seethes. "Whoever put these down was prepared!"

This was bad. Neither you nor Morgan were particularly effective against a golem. You could either engage it and hope to buy enough time for the others to break through the wall, or you and Morgan would have to make a run through one of the many other tunnels connected to the chamber. The golem couldn't have blocked them ALL off...

The golem brings both its fists slamming down, but the move is slow and telegraphed enough that you have more than sufficient time to sidestep the blow.

Morgan meanwhile takes the opportunity and looses an arrow at the golem, the projectile whistling through the air and driving itself directly into the golem's head.

The golem pauses and then begins backing away, raising its might arms to shield itself from further attacks.

That arrow, it must have hit dangerously close to the golem's core if it was starting to attack defensively like this.

Morgan fires a fresh flurry of arrows at the golem, forcing it to keep its hands up to shield its vulnerable "wound". The golem keeps backing up, trying to gain more distance, but it makes a mistake and takes one step too far, toppling backwards into one of the water streams with a loud SPLASH. Water is sent spraying everywhere, but you are not deterred. You charge forward and leap on top of the golem's chest.

You now had a choice. Use your hammer end to smash the golem's face in and destroy the core, or use your spear point to try and pry the core out for Nino to study...

The golem flails and thrashes in an attempt to throw you off, but you remain undeterred as you jam your spear point right into the section Morgan's arrow head pierced. You lever it back and forth with great effort until finally, with a little POP, the core falls out and splashes down into the water.

The golem begins to crumble and fall apart, its pieces being swiftly carried away by the current of the stream. You manage, however, to catch the core and hold it securely in your hand.

"Did you get it?" Morgan asks as she sprints up, almost out of breath.

You nod and give a thumbs up.

"That's great!" Morgan smiles.

Suddenly, there's an explosion as the barrier finally comes down, and Lucina, Nino, and Naru come charging through.

"EAT THIS STUPID GOLEEEEEMS!" Nino roars and then blinks when she sees matters have already been handled. "...oh."

"So you defeated it on your own." Lucina smiles, clearly impressed.

"Nnnnnnn, it's no good." Nino pouts. "Most of the magic is already gone, and whoever enchanted it did a really good job covering their tracks."

"Still..." Lucina glance at the crumbled remains of the golem. "There's definitely a sinister force behind all of this."

"So how are we even gonna fix this?" Naru looks around. "All of this is stone. The golems can be practically everywhere!"

"That's true." Lucina frowns. "Perhaps we should leave this to the Mages..."

"I think I can track down whoever's responsible for this." Morgan steps forward. "Whoever made that thing may have done a good job hiding their magic, but they were sloppy about keeping their scent off."

"Well, I think I can use this core like a beacon!" Nino offers. "So we can draw whoever is behind this towards us!"

Hm, well, both plans had their strengths and weaknesses. Morgan's plan would give you the initiative, but you'd have to delve further into the sewers and risk running into more traps.

Nino's plan was safer in that you wouldn't have to traverse the tunnels, but you'd also be losing the element of surprise.

Morgan leads you through one of the tunnels before stopping at a bare wall.

"The scent goes past this wall." She mutters as she runs her hand along the surface. "But this definitely isn't an illusion."

"They probably used magic to form a physical wall, just like with the golems!" Nino nods.

"What's back there?" Naru turns to Lucina.

"Let's see..." Lucina checks her map and then pales. "It leads down the main cistern, where the city draws all its water from."

"Nothing good can come from that." Morgan narrows her eyes. "Is there an alternate route?"

"Y-yes." Lucina nods and points to a opening further down. "One of the tributaries in that tunnel branches off to feed into the cistern. Maybe they overlooked it."

"Let's go, then." Morgan says as she dashes forward.

Sure enough, you find that little branch, which opens up into the ceiling of the cistern, the water flowing up from the cistern and through the hole via the ancient magic that built this place. However, you had to ignore the physics because of what else was in the cistern.

Down below, you could see a robed, hooded figure standing on a walkway suspended above a massive artificial, underground lake of pure water. The figure was apparently in the middle of preparing some sort of magic ritual, with ominous purple runes being drawn into the rock.

"Looks like we found them." Morgan says as she draws her bow.

"Wait." Lucina interjects. "We need to find out who they are and what they want!"

"We can worry about that after I drop an arrow into their skull." Morgan scowls. "They've already proven to be an extremely dangerous mage."

"But we're close enough to get the drop on them." Lucina insists.

You put a hand on Morgan's arm and push it down just a bit, so her aim is no longer on the target's head.

"Fine, but don't blame me if you get knocked around a bit." Morgan sighs. "Just get ready to get down there if things go bad."

You nod and give her a thumbs up.

Morgan takes a deep breath, exhales, and lets loose.

>FATE POINT USED!
>1 point remains

Morgan's arrow flies straight and true, burying itself right into the target's back. To their credit, there's no scream of pain or shock, but they do drop to their knees, taken off guard by the attack.

"Go!" Lucina barks as she drops down out of the hole and lands on the walkway below. You follow close behind.

Morgan and Nino stay behind to provide ranged support from their vantage point, while Naru puts a quick protection blessing on both you and Lucina.

However, you see the target limping away as best they could. Morgan fires another arrow, but it bounces off a purple rune that appears in the air. Looks like their magical defenses were up. You also not the target dropping a crystal into the water. An ill omen.

"Watch out, they're trying to summon a water elemental!" Nino cries out from behind. Sure enough, the water below begins to bubble and swirl. With so much water to work with-

"Damn!" Lucina seethes as she pauses her advance. "I'll take care of it! You stay after them!"

You continue to sprint after the target. Even with your heavy armor, the target was wounded, which basically put you on an even field in terms of speed. However, the target could use magic, so you had to expect any sort of trick.

As the target hobbles away, they wave their arms, and a wave of water rises from the cistern and washes across the walkway in front of you before instantly freezing, creating a thin layer of ice along the surface. Definitely meant to try and slow you down. And in a place like this, over a cistern that was so deep you couldn't even see the bottom, with the armor you were wearing, slipping and falling could be potentially lethal.

You have one last move at your disposal. You heft your halberd up with one arm, getting ready to throw it. If this didn't work, you weren't sure what would.

Your one saving grace was that your target was too busy trying to escape, too sure in their defense strategy to look back at you to see what you were planning.

You throw your halberd like a javelin, and it flies straight and true. The magical barrier flashes for a brief second, but shatters from the sheer force striking it. Your halberd continues on unabated until finally burying itself into your target's back. The target stumbles forward from the force of the blow, tripping over and smashing their head against the stone wall and slumping down, completely out cold.

Well, that was on issue dealt with.

However, as you turn around, you see that the others were in dire straits.

The water elemental your opponent had summoned had now fully manifested, taking on a vaguely humanoid shape as it faces down Lucina, Morgan, Nino, and Naru.

Romulus barks as the four girls ready their weapons and attacks as the massive water elemental crashes down on them like a tidal wave...

The reason we don't howl is because a dragon's blood runs through our veins, literally given what happened when we touched Morgan's bow. Odds are our vow of silence is similar to the Greybeards' so we don't accidentally blow up stuff.
