I'm still working on how frequently I can do turn updates for this game. Here is the schedule I will keep for this thread: I will post each day at 11:00 AM and 11:00 PM, PST, with mission start set for Sunday morning tomorrow. Please have your turns input by 10:00 AM/PM on the relevant day. I can run until Thursday if necessary for a total of 10 turns, which should be enough to complete the mission.

"Hello! It's me, the expert crafter, master runesmith, and legendary Mage, the Alchemist! As you can see from the containment cage behind me, I'm hard at work deciphering the secrets of the mysterious Nexus you looted in your first mission! Any day now, its encryptions will crack, and the knowledge contained therein will be mine, mine, all mine! Wah hah hah -- ahem!"

The Alchemist clears her throat, then gestures towards her workshop. "Your Gear is all cleaned up and ready to rock, so take your pick, guys. Try not to break any of it this time, okay? I don't make this stuff just so you can smash it against some Scav's helmet. And another thing--"

A seam cracks open in the Nexus, and a brilliant blue light shines through. Crackling bolts of electricity spill out through the protective cage and into the laboratory, the absorption coils pushed to their limit.

The Alchemist shrieks and hides behind the nearest Freelancer. "Waaaahh! It actually opened!"

The protective cage blasts apart, metal bars pinwheeling through the laboratory, smashing into screens and breaking pipes. A Knight is struck by a sharp piece of shrapnel that lodges in their helmet, but it matters little as some piece of metal is not nearly as hard as a Knight's skull.

The machine inside the wrecked cage retracts a series of armored plates until a quarter of itself has opened, revealing a tiny nexus of furiously charged storm energy. The blue lightning slowly grows and takes shape, until it resolves into--

"Mrow?"

"It's a kitty?" The Alchemist stares in puzzlement, then gasps. "It's a familiar! I thought they were all gone! Nobody's seen or heard from one for centuries. I -- I want to pet it! But it's made of pure energy!" She stamps in frustration, then calms herself down. "Okay, okay. You guys might not have heard of these. Familiars were created back in the old days. They're kind of like artificial elemental spirits. They don't really have a physical form, they're made of energy and information in quantum phase-space or -- or something? I don't remember the details. Anyway. This one must have been caught and enslaved by the Scavs, used as a living storm energy generator. As if those scumbags weren't bad enough, they had to imprison a kitty. That's just wrong."

"Mrow!" The familiar, appearing to be a small cat made purely of electricity, hops out of its creche and lands on the floor. It trots over to the Alchemist, emitting tiny jolts of lightning as its feet touch the metal floor, and rubs her hand with a crackle of static.

"Woooahhh, that feels weird! But it's kind of nice." The Alchemist pets the lightning cat until a jolt of backfires up her arm and knocks her backwards. She winces and clutches her hand, her glove charred and smoking. "Aheh, whoops. I couldn't resist. Anyway, at least we know it's friendly. As much as I hate to admit it, I don't know much about how these work. But the Nexus containment sphere the Scavs were using to imprison it and harvest its energy probably has all kinds of useful stuff I can reverse engineer. I can't wait to have a look inside!"

Graves stands in front of the assembled Freelancers in the Command Center.

"All right, boys, girls and bots. You've done good work out there so far. Three missions up, three batches of scumbag Xenos put down. But I know some of you have been thinking, "But Mister Graves, when do I get to go to the Scavs' homes and put the boots to them where they live?" Well I've got good news for you, soldiers. That time is now."

The Commander brings up pictures of a vast factory city. It's mostly run-down and destroyed with the weight of ages, but bright glows of energy from the city's interior show that some of the machines inside have been reactivated. Scav encampments and guard posts have been set up along the city's outskirts. "Thanks to Snow's recon, we know the Scavs are trying to break into some lab or factory or something in the center of the city, one that's been sealed up for a long time. I'm not sure what the big stink about it is, but it's got the Mages real anxious to the point where they're reaching out to the Freelancer companies. The important thing, as far as you lot are concerned, is that the Captain has agreed to help. So that's where we're going."

Graves highlights a certain section on the edge of the city, in the middle of a Scav camp. "Right here is an Golden Age anti-air defense battery, by which I mean a bunch of big old laser guns. The Scavs don't know how to use it, but we do. Captain and Snow say if we get in there and switch on the guns, they'll clear the skies of any Scav ships that get close. That'll give us a green zone to set up a fortified camp, as a base for our attacks on the city itself.

"We expect light resistance immediately on landing, but heavy reinforcements will be incoming from nearby camps throughout the entire mission until you get that battery turned on. So I don't want to see any lollygagging out there, lads. Hit them hard and fast. Get it done. Any questions? Good," he says, switching off the map and cutting off several of you who did, in fact, have questions. "Rollout's in sixty. Do what you need to do, grab your shit, and meet up in the Hangar."

"Hey there, Snow. Thanks for joining us." Graves turns to address the Freelancer squads. "For those of you who aren't familiar, Lady Snow here is our lead scout. You apes treat her with the proper respect." Someone mutters something about white-knighting to his comrade, who laughs. Graves overhears. "That's for your own safety, idiots, not hers." He sighs as he pulls on his broken-horned helmet. "Kids these days. All right, move out!"

She had gotten herself a new suit, this one fitting her style a bit more and she traded that knife of hers for a katana. Seemed reasonable, considering she wouldn't be in stealth all the time.

"Commander Graves? I was... wondering if it'd be out of line to request one of the art pieces that were recovered last mission? Unless you plan on putting it into a vault or something, I just want something for my room, is all."

After his answer, she'd turn to Lady Snow.

"You wouldn't happen to be a sword girl, would you? You want a flanking buddy?"

Gallows turns to face the hunter that sat beside her. She had caught her attention at the mention of swords. "Oh, oh... I'm a sword person." She says fiddling with the longsword she was toting around with her. The faint red glow of the sword sparked as Gallows ran her fingers down the length of the blade, a red energy flowing up her forearm. "... This little thing has been with me since I became a freelancer. I'm Gallows by the way, nice to meet you. I'm new, if you didn't notice."

She mutters a bit, taking a moment to awkwardly scoot closer to Gallows, throwing her arm over her shoulder. "Gallows, was it? Nice to meet you, I haven't been here for too long either, so don't feel too threatened."

She laughs at her own dialogue.

"Now, I like a woman that can handle a blade, so flanking buddies...?" She lingers on, her eyebrows wiggling from the inside of her helmet.

Thoth drummed his fingers anxiously onto an imaginary table that was about an inch above the actual table. First mission, first briefing, and he hadn't had one of his flashes yet, which was good. Telling people what they were about to say didn't usually win him many friends.

Oh no, here one came. And it was for Gallows, too, one of the only non-strangers here. He resisted the urge to say her line out loud with a visible twitch, instead glancing back to Graves.

"She's about to ask you," Thoth says to him.

"Damn it Thoth. How many times do I have to tell you that as a wingman you have to back my plays. I'm... " he trailed off.

The words had left his mouth before he realised what he was saying, but by then he was already most of the way through.

"I'm going to shut up now, actually," he finished awkwardly.

Rhino glances at Westree coldly before returning his gaze to Gallows', erm, sword stroking display.

Vacia opens her mouth but quickly closes it, not quite able to come up with something to say. She takes a few step backs, frowning as she looks up at the huddled up mage.

"If you want to stick with me, the offer still stands. I promise that i'm a lot more selfless than the average hunter."

"I've been eyein' you Rhino. I think we could make a great team if we put our minds to it. As for what I'd bring to the proverbial table." Westree points to his still spinning gun,"This is the greatest handgun ever made; the Taurus Quantum Action Space Cadet." He pushes out the cylinder of the magnum and spins the gun so five of the bullets fall out.
"Six shots, more than enough to kill anything that moves." He flourishes, guiding the gun down next to his holster before suddenly bringing it up to point at Rhino.

"Now I'll show you why they call me-"

Westree accidentally squeezes the trigger before he can move just to the right of Rhino's faceplate and his revolver does it's job; the bullet bouncing off of the titan's armor before whizzing through the brim of Westree's hat and getting lodged somewhere in the ceiling. Westree realizes what happened and his face going redder than the barrel of his magnum. He looks for any help from his new comrades, but with everyone being super sci-fi space marines, nobody has even flinched. Westree can practically feel the stares of disappointment burning through his carbon helmet as Rhino stands up.

"Sorry about that, pardner," Westree says in a cowboy accent that is even more exaggerated than normal, "You look like a big guy, so I hope that wasn't extremely painful, right?"

Rhino's face is hidden beneath his helmet. A good thing, too, because he's almost in tears because of how hilarious that was.

Trying to keep it nonchalant, he pats the cowboy on the shoulder.

"Yeah, 'pardner,' I'm a big guy. For you."

Looming over Westree for a second, intimidating in his huge armor, Rhino seems like he's about to do something, but he finally lets out a chuckle and sits back down.

"Eh, it's fine. Just don't do any more stupid shit like that inside the dropship. Pilot gets cranky if you scratch the paint."

Putting his arms behind his head and leaning back, (which causes the metal seat to creak,) Rhino looks at Westree expectantly.

Solaaris was sitting at the back, quietly listening to the briefing and nodding his head as humans usually do to show agreement and understanding.

It had just been sent here from the factory; a new and untested model X-Christo which traded free-thinking for a form of sentience that was externally controlled.
Even so, Solaaris was having a hard time getting used to its new framework.
It stayed in its seat, quietly reciting passages from the instruction manual that came with it to himself, it had memorised the manual extremely easily as it was only a couple-hundred kilobytes big.

The Scav encampment is typical for its kind: tents and makeshift habitats clustered around human ruins half-fixed with patchwork repairs. Weapon and supply crates lie within easy reach, so that any Scav might take up arms at any time. Above it all, in the center of the camp, the Laser Defense Battery looms, a massive array of laser cannons now covered in vines and creepers, still a formidable and ominous weapon even centuries after its abandonment. Snow assured you it would still work. You'll have to hope she was right.

Nearby stand the tall spires of Machinaria, the Machine City, where the Scavs have begun to plunder the long-abandoned factories. If you can clear this area and hold it as a safe zone, you'll be able to send further assaults into that city and put a stop to their plans.

Under a darkened sky thick with clouds and rain, the dropship swoops in over the Scav encampment. It flies low and opens its hold doors, disgorging its cargo of Freelancers onto the cracked concrete. Scavs loitering around a nearby campfire, sheltered by an awning fashioned from a tattered banner, are startled by the sudden arrival of their hated enemies. Their armor, wet with rain, glistens in the firelight. They leap to their feet and snatch up their weapons, calling alarms in their deep bellowing reptilian growls, alerting others nearby.

"You've got two control consoles to activate to turn the big guns on," Graves says. "Snow has pinpointed their location for us. Once they're activated, you'll have to defend both of the consoles and the Laser Battery until it warms up and starts firing, then clear out any Scavs still in the area. Remember, enemy reinforcements won't stop until the guns turn on!

"Wolf Team, take the center and push forward. Fox Team, hit the left flank and get up there to that control console on the roof. Hawk Team, take down anyone who messes with them. Let's make it happen."

Sigurd and Durward breach the room underneath the Laser Battery, but there are no Scavs to be found.

Smokes teleports behind two Scavs on the first-level roof of the northern building and swings his massive greatsword, cleaving them both in two in one bloody strike.

Rhino fires at Raider 10, but misses.

Thoth and Gallows charge up and fire a grenade bombardment, killing Raider 6 and wounding Raiders 7 and 8.

Westree rolls out a smoke grenade, covering his allies' advance. Raider 12 and Thrall 13 attempt to fire their overwatch attacks, but the smoke cloud blocks their vision, and the shots are ineffective.

Solaris moves forward under cover of the smoke grenade and fires at Raider 10, but misses.

Solaaris heard the screeching of the feedback from his sensors, error messages popped up on its visor's screen. That hit was unnecessary for the operation.

It hears a cry come from the smoke and rushes in to find Westree bleeing all over the place. After quickly scanning the situation, the results came in and stated that he was in the middle of dying. Solaaris went to take cover behind Westree's flailing body.

"Do not be alarmed, things will be okay soon." ...it was programmed to say. In reality, the current state of affairs were far from okay. The medkit box let off a little beep and Westree looked as if he was perking up.

In the corner of its HUD, a notification popped up.

Westree's world is a thick haze. Standing in smoke will do that to you, but what was really getting to Westree was getting shot three times. He fell backward, almost in a yare yare daze, his hands outstretched, looking for anything to slow his fall. Time goes in slow motion as he sees the streams of blood start to run from his body as his careens toward the ground. Luckily, he is caught by Rhino and propped up on the decrepit sculpture that served as his cover before he was, you know, shot.

He hears Rhino say what Westree just knows is some cheeky comment before turning around and tearing a Scav to pieces with his LMG.
"Serves the bastard right," Westree thinks to himself as his head droops onto his shoulder, the blood now pooling and swirling in his helmet.

He sits there, dying, for about 10 seconds before a robot he's never seen before comes up and starts to take off Westree's hat. He tries to protest, hoping Rhino will turn around and notice this rather rude intrusion, but there is nothing he can do as the robot takes out what looks to be a comically large needle. Westree closes his eyes, wondering why the robot isn't just going to shoot him before he suddenly feels, really good?

"WHOOOO WOO!"

The fiery scream is heard by everyone on the battlefield, turning the heads of man, alien, and machine.

"What in the River Sticks was in that thing," shouts the cowboy at Solaaris.
"It was just a standard medkit Mr. Westree."
"Are you kiddin'? That stuff makes me feel like I could beat a Thane in a boxing match on top of an active volcano! What did they put in those things?"
"Just the standard amount of ultramethamphetamine sir."
"Now that you mention it..." Westree looked down. The holes in his body were still wide open and blood was almost shooting out at quite an impressive rate.

"Oh."
"The holes in your body should be fine in about a minute or so, but you'll be fine until then."
"Sounds about right. Now as for you," he growls, turning his magnum toward the nearest Scav, "we have some unfinished business, don't we, pardner?"

So instead he raised his rifle and took a quick shot at the Thrall on the left.

He pulls back into cover then closes his eyes. He missed something. Gallows. "Gallows, get back into this cover with me, please. Why'd I say please?" He laughs briefly, then effects a posh accent. "Gallows, my old chum, would you be a dear and pass the salt?" He switches back to his normal voice. As she swung her sword down, she could have sworn she was about to miss, but then she heard the chant of Duward and her sword changes direction and strikes true. As the thrall falls, she reaches down and pulls more tags from his throat and begins running out of the room to the levels above, hearing the cracks of energy sling past her head. Once she makes it above, she begins to fiddle with the computer, hoping these golden age computer weren't too difficult to mess around with.

"I'm starting up one of the computers now, if someone can make a break for the other one we can get this mission done a lot earlier than expected!"

Solaaris saw the bullets coming through the now dissipating cloud of smoke and entering into its frame.
Connections were severed and wires were ripped out of their sockets, it had just gotten used to this new body too...

Then it heard small faint tapping noises coming from all over its body and suddenly it could move its hips and shoulders again.

Solaaris stood up and patted himself down only to find an unregistered, slightly bashed Medkit was hanging from it.

Solaaris stopped itself from saying anything more, it was probably for the best that Gamma wasn't notified of this discovery.
Solaaris would return the favour someday.

Triangulating where the bullets came from, Solaaris determined that the best strategy would be to violently retaliate with lethal force on incoming threats:

Rhino and Westree slam jam Raider 10 for 9 damage between them.

Dawn heals Thoth and guns down Thrall 20, staying mobile with her SMG.

Thoth blasts Thrall 21 with his scout rifle.

Durward fires at Raider 17. The shots don't land, but the volume of fire from his LMG destroys the wall the Raider cowered behind.

Myrmidon blinks through the flames, into the eastern building, and swings her blade, decapitating Raider 16 in one blow.

Phaws strikes down the wounded Raider 11, feeling the Scav's magical energy flow along the blade and into himself, reinvigorating him and charging up one of his grenades.

Leopard throws a Battle Scanner, showing that no ambush awaits in the northern building. He fires his scout rifle at Raider 20, dealing 1 damage.

Gamma heals Solaris, then fires at Raider 13, but the shots strike cover.

A healed Solaris charges forth and cuts down Raider 12 with his greatsword.

Smokes dashes and blinks to the east, bypassing the Scav line to activate the second control console.

Sigurd steps forward and finishes off Raider 12 with another burst from his LMG.

Vacia climbs to the top of the northwest tower, while Smokes blinks through the battlefield to the northeast building. Both of them jack into the control consoles and upload the program everyone was given before rolling out.

The huge artillery battery, encrusted in moss and vines, slowly starts to revive. It clanks and hums, green lights playing along its sides in sequence.

"Good job, fellas," Graves says. "The gun is comin' back to life. Now just keep those consoles protected while it warms up. Been shut down here a few hundred years or so, so it might take a few minutes. Once it's on, that big boy will keep the Scav reinforcements off your back, but it looks like the first wave of troops get there first. Hunker down and prep for Scav dropships, incoming!"

"Oh screw you, scavs! Just for that..." He repositioned and primed a fire grenade, holding it for a second while he guesstimated, then threw it square into the middle of the drop zone. "I fell into a birning ring of fire. I went down, down, down, and the flames rose higher," he sang to himself quietly, in an odd tone, before chuckling morbidly, the contrast to his normal cheery, chatty self making the sound a little disturbing. Oh, shit, he didn't mute himself for that. Whoops.

Vacia engages Raider 15 in a battle of blades, and the Scav is all too willing to test his mettle against her skill. Her sword slips past his guard and strikes for 4 damage.

Rhino activates his jump jets and blasts off , landing so hard he cracks the ground.

Durward heals himself, grateful for his foresight in bringing not one but two medkits. He swings his massive greatsword at Raider 17, dealing heavy damage, but the Scav clung to life.

Westree guns down Thrall 18 with his SMG, moving north.

Myrmidon blinks up to the roof and charges Raider 20, slashing him with her blade. She was able to kill him due to the wound dealt earlier by Leopard.

Thoth sings to himself as he sets off an incendiary grenade under the marked landing site of an incoming Scav dropship. "Looks like those scavs will get a "warm welcome" eh?" Graves says, and laughs heartily. You hear Snow groan.

Gamma nails Thrall 19 with a three-round burst to the head from his auto rifle.

Solaris runs north and sends forth his medical drone to heal Vacia.

Gallows, Smokes, Phaws and Leopard all take up overwatch in anticipation of the landing Scav reinforcements. After healing Gallows, Dawn does as well. The south wall of the Laser Battery building, after being pummeled by multiple grenades and set on fire, finally succumbs and collapses, providing Sigurd a convenient line of sight to the southern landing site.

Thrall 11 continues to cower.

The only surviving Scav defender in fighting condition, Raider 17 strikes with his blade at Durward, scoring a hit for 2 damage.

Three Scav dropships streak down through the rain from the darkened sky, and hover low over the battlefield. Scav warriors leap out, their guns and blades ready, eager to join the fray and bloody their weapons on Freelancer corpses. They are greeted by a hail of overwatch fire, in which Gamma, Phaws, Smokes, Sigurd, Leopard and Snow all pick off a Thrall in the initial wave. The Scavs are trained to shield their more important troops with the lesser, however, and the Raiders make it to the ground unharmed, along with something else. Something more.

A new type of Scav is here. Hulking giants who land from the dropships with heavy force, cracking the ground under their feet. Firelight from the lingering flames glints off the rain-soaked metal of their scaled armor, sculpted in draconic forms in homage of the Scavs' masters. Each carries a long-handled axe with a rune-carved blade, sure to impact with devastating blows. The new warriors have landed in pairs, one in each sector of the battlefield. They let out savage roars, their reptilian bellows resounding over the chaos of noise, and begin their advance, taunting the Freelancers in their alien speech as they move forward.

"Goddamn I haven't seen a Brute for a long time," Graves says. "Those bastards can be seriously tough. Also, I don't think I need to tell you, but watch out for those axes. They pack a wallop. From these readings it looks like the gun is booting up soon, so keep it steady out there and hold on!"

A new enemy has joined the fray: Scav Brute. (8 HP, 1 Armor)

Cayde slams to the ground in a drop pod as Tiger 3, perhaps regretting having joined the battlefield at this particular moment in time.

Thoth laughed along with Graves, but the laugh died at the sight of their new opponents. That was going to be... an interesting fight.

"They're big guys. For us. I wonder if they have any bigger troops, like a giant or something." He pauses for a second. "Actually I don't want to know. Commander Graves, about that warm welcome... can we skip shaking their hands? I think they'd crush my hand. And then me."

Thoth backed up quickly, not particularly feeling like getting hit by something that large. He cast a glance at Dawn and Gallows, then focused in on the Thrall and the Raider in the backdrop. He had to get some cover between him and them. So he switched course and moved for the high cover, making sure to still be backpedaling away from the Brutes.

Thoth produces his last mana grenade. Better make it a good one. "Let's play a game!" he calls to the Brutes, not sure if they even understood him, going off that alien-sounding chatter. He primes the grenade. "It's called 'Catch'! Hot tip, keep your eye on the grenade!" He lobs the charged grenade, now glowing an intense blue, in a soaring arc over the head of the first Brute and coming clean down between the two Brutes. The sight of the huge Brutes is enough to put Dawn's heart to racing. One look at those huge warriors is enough to remind her that she lacks any REAL way of bringing them down.

The jab to the neck was painful at first, until the slow flood of healing goodness flowed into her. "I see what you mean there Thoth." The Enemies dropped as she level her gun, but the slight delirium that hung from the healing hazed her vision, and her shot went wide. The two heavy Brutes that dropped sent shivers down her spine, but as her heart beat increased, the world slowed down for her.

As shifting her head back and forth, she spotted the lone thrall, preparing himself to fire on anyone and anything. Before she new it, she was dashing, and sprinting, Forgiveness sitting comfortably in her hand. The Thrall raised his gun in surprise, trying to block her attack, but her blade sunk into his shin, bringing him to one knee. As stared back at his attacker, the bright red glow of her energy pulsated from her visor. "SUBMIT!!!" screamed Gallows in her mind, her hand out stretched, leeching the memories and life force from the thrall. As he emptied, Gallows jammed her blade through its skull, before pulling it out and decapitating it. "May you rest..."

Phaws slung the sniper rifle over their shoulder and combat rolled through the battered door. Not strictly necessary, but when you could come up with a spent magnum magazine in your hand it was all worth it for the moment when you reached through and squeezed at physics until the metal bent, the molecules roiled and everything got oh-so-shiny.

Phaws slammed against the north facing wall, elbowed the door open with the momentum and bit down the urge to laugh.

Phaws threw the managrenade, searing after-image soaring across the gap between the door and four reptilian invaders and then Phaws froze.

Considering the look of confusion on the Raider, Vacia assumed she fucked up one of the words. "Fuck... uh, no fret is sharp, uh what the fuck is sword?" She asks no one in particular, quickly moving up to impale her sword in the Raider's chest, pushing him off with her foot, quickly pulling his tag from his neck. She pauses for a moment, then reaches down and picks up the Raider's sword, quickly ripping off this belt to sheath the sword. She'd love another trophy.

"Fuck, that's gonna bother me all day, I gotta know." The Hunter quickly peeks over the side, waving one of the brutes down.

Rhino climbs to the roof and fires down at Brute 1, but misses.

Smokes and Myrmidon are unafraid to meet Brute 5 and 6 in melee combat, their skillful blades clashing with the giant Scavs' mighty axes. They deal 5 and 4 damage.

Durward fires at Raider 17, but misses.

Westree climbs alongside Rhino and blasts Brute 1 with his magnum for 2 damage.

Gamma fires an accurate burst from his auto rifle into Brute 1's skull, dealing a critical hit for 3 damage.

Thoth lands a mana grenade on Brute 3 and 4, dealing 1 damage and breaking their armor.

Brutes 1 and 2 blink onto the high ground, laughing at Rhino and Westree's surprise. They stride forward, and Westree barely dodges a swipe from Brute 2's axe. Brute 1 is savagely wounded, blue blood streaming from cracks in his armor, but he still advances on Rhino, laughing and taunting him in Scav. He swings his axe and lands a critical blow on Rhino, dealing 1 damage and breaking 2 armor.

Brute 3 and 4 are both still burning from Thoth's grenade. Trailing flame, they charge Sigurd with a war cry. Sigurd blocks the first blow, but Brute 4's axe strikes home, biting deep into the Knight's armor for 2 break.

Brute 6 swings his axe at Myrmidon, but the agile Hunter evades.

Thrall 26 shoots at Phaws and hits for 2 damage.

Raider 17 strikes at Solaris, but misses.

Raider 21 fires at Gamma, but misses.

Raider 22 shoots up at Westree and hits for 2 damage.

Raider 24 runs forward for a better firing angle, but eats a headshot from Snow.

"Ah shit," Graves says. "We got another set of ships coming in, boys. The big gun is almost ready to go, though." You glance towards the laser battery and see the arrays of long-range anti-air lasers lit up in green, swiveling, extending and retracting as their targeting calibrates. In the darkened sky, the engine blasts of Scav dropships are visible as another wave of reinforcements approach.

"Is it going to be ready in time or not, Graves?" Snow says.

"Uhh -- well, it's gonna be a close shave. Almost there."

To Thoth's equal surprise and relief, the Brutes didn't pay him any mind, instead charging off to attack Sigurd, who weathered their assault far better than Thoth himself ever could've. Thoth advanced to take a shot at them, pulling the magnum out of its holster and spinning the barrel confidently, when Smokes came in and cleared house with the both of them, coming from what seemed like out of nowhere.

Well, what no-RAIDER. This would suffice as a target. "Nice one, Smokes. Carved through them like a hot knife through wheat in a field!" No that's not the right phrase. Eh. Thoth shrugs and settles the sights of his magnum on the Raider. "I don't have a one-liner, so just die please."

It finally felt good to finally stab something. The rush of adrenaline was enough to ignore the shot that pinged into Gallows' back. Following soon after was the loud crack of Thoth's magnum, a sound that she had heard a few times when they had trained together. Turning around to see the smoking corpse of a Raider, minus its head, she smiled, her back still hurting.

As she tried to reply to Thoth's save, she found herself grunting and barking, or at least trying to. As she runs back to Dawn, putting Forgiveness back, she finally gets her vocal cords back to speaking in a Human manner. "Hey... You wouldn't have any more of those kits?"

Just as she lands Dawn's visor is pinged with more units being damaged. Turning west just in time to see Smoke break into a sprint and hack down a pair of Brutes.

Jumping through the window and across the building and planting herself beside a wall. A quick peek outside shows a gristly scene.

"Hey... You wouldn't have any more of those kits?" Gallows. Wounded again. A quick check at her gauntlet's pressure meter shows it ticking at 0.

"Negative Gallows, that was my last dose." Flipping open another panel of her bulky gauntlet reveals two pale yellow squares, blinking faintly. "I hope this will serve in its stead"

Solaaris knew something wasn't quite right, from his HUD he could see a flashing red icon calling for distress.
It was his duty to help his fellow comrades, it was his purpose.

Solaaris, dodged around the Scav Raider and ran up the stairs, the hydraulics pumping at max speed, it knew that there wasn't much time.
Solaaris burst out of the door of the 1st floor so hard that it flew off its hinges as it pummelled its way towards the Brute that was attacking Westree with its Greatsword raised way above its head.

As the blade came crashing down, Solaaris said something that made Westree turn around and look in awe:
"It's nothing personal."

Smokes dashes south to the aid of his fellow veteran Sigurd. With a mighty swing of his greatsword, the Hunter decapitates two Brutes in one strike, their headless bodies collapsing limp as azure blood sprays out in twin fountains. The Hunter raises his bloodied blade and, instead of shouting as he is long-bereft of functional lungs, coughs and exhales a cloud of foul-looking smoke from his respirator.

Rhino clashes with a Brute, striving to push him off the roof, but to no avail.

From the northwest rooftop, Vacia snipes Thrall 26.

Thoth aims his magnum and blows Raider 23's head clean off its shoulders in one shot.

Myrmidon plunges her blade into Brute 6, finishing him off.

Gamma shoots upwards at the heavily wounded Brute 1, finishing him off. The dying Scav falls from the roof and crashes to the ground below.

Gallows overwatches, while Dawn blesses her with a force shield.

Westree and Solaris together bring down Brute 2 in a flurry of bullets and sword-smashing.

Phaws runs into the southwest building after the cowardly Thrall and skewers him on his blade, recharging his mana grenade on the energy contained in the alien armor's batteries.

Leopard claims a prize from his fallen foe, then hustles forward. He takes aim and scores a headshot for 2 damage on Raider 22.

The Scav dropships arrive over the encampment just as the laser battery lets out a final blaring alarm, broadcasting its activation. Right away the defensive targeting systems register the Scavs as hostile intruders. The vast array of guns swivel and begin to spew a lethal barrage of green fire skyward. One of the dropships is immediately blasted out of the air, its engines erupting in gouts of azure and cyan flame. It crashes to the ground, smashing a crater into the concrete, and explodes, fire and smoke streaming from the wreck.

The second dropship is just able to unload its cargo of Raiders and Thralls. It zips away from the battlefield, the pilot attempting to make his escape, but he doesn't get far before the laser battery tags him as well, and the craft spirals down and out of the sky.

The Scavs run for cover, although Gallows and Dawn both tag Thralls with lethal reaction shot before they finds it, while Snow takes down a Raider.

Durward has glitched, and his suit's protective algorithms move him to cover, but Raider 17 fires an accurate shot past his guard for 2 damage.

Raider 21 climbs to the roof and shot Solaris in the head for 4 damage!

Cayde nails Raider 22 with a reaction shot to the head for 5 damage, splattering its brains.

As the thrall landed, Gallows leveled her rifle on it and pulled the trigger, multiple times, in fact, she's pretty sure that might have overkilled it. The raider that now stood behind her was probably fearing for his life, now that the battery was online. And his brute friends were dead.

Quickly pivoting around, Gallows lashed out with her blade, making a quick slice at it. Sticking her hand out again in hopes, she whispered in Scav (if they could whisper), "Forfeit your mind."

Thoth's first thought was to look north, at the dropped troops over there, but they seemed to be getting creamed from what he could see. Then he looked west, at the fires of the crashed dropship. Enchanting. Utterly stunning to look at.

To the left of that in his field of view was a moving shape. He semi-reluctantly shifted his gaze from the flame and focused on it. A Raider, still alive. His magnum didn't have the range to take that from here, and he didn't really feel like running into the open to try for another headshot. Damn that was still satisfying. His scout rifle would probably get mostly stopped by that armour, too.

He quickly flicked up a minimap of the area. Who was nearby? Seeker and Rook, but they were marked as glitched. Cayde and Sigurd were near. Ah, Phaws. That one usually had a grenade on him.

"Phaws, would you grenade the very top of that east wall of the building you're in? There's something on the other side and it has armour that needs shredding."

After the dropship lands, Dawn peeks over the window and squeezes down on her SMG, raking down another thrall before ducking back into cover.

Her visor still blinks a pair of angry red warning lights. Unit Westree, on the other side of the battlefield has spent most of the mission in critical or semi critical condition. With a huff, she opens inter-team coms "Priest Solarris, please stabilize yourself and Operator Westree. I am dry on medkits."

Cutting coms she watches Gallows rush a raider, and with a flourish, miss. With a prayer she levels her SMG and takes aim.

Myrmidon comes out of her line of sight and butchers the Raider before she can pull the trigger.

Lowering her gun she plants her head against the wall. Muttering to herself.

Westree stands up and brushes chunks of Brute off his duster. That was his second brush with death today. He isn't a religious man, but he offers a silent prayer of thanks to whoever decided to make that Priest robot. He turns to look at his shining metallic companion.
"Thanks again, I guess. Now if there's anything you need me to do for you once we get outt-"

CRACK!

The shot from the Scav rifle rang true. Westree sees the robot stagger for a second before it rights itself. There is a good sized chunk missing from its head, with bits of quantum computing chips and cooling systems scattered all over the roof behind it.

For a second, Westree iss struck with mortal terror before a strange calm washes over him. Well, strange isn't the right word. He's felt this plenty of times before, but that doesn't mean he'll ever get used to it. He turns towards the Raider who took the shot, gingerly loading six bullets into his revolver.

"Now excuse me mister, I think you've had a momentary lapse in judgement."

BLAM

Westree walks forward.

"You took a shot at me a while ago, and that's all well and good. I'm always partial to havin' a good old fashioned shootout from time to time."

BLAM

Westree walks forward.

"I don't know if you can get this through that thick fucking skull of yours, but that was a mistake; and here in the Freelancers, we don't look to kindly on mistakes."

BLAM

Westree walks forward.

"You." BLAM "Shot." BLAM "My." BLAM "Friend."

Westree puts a final bullet in the chamber, looking down on the piece of jelly that technically counts as Raider, who is barely alive enough to contemplate the situation he's in.

"And that, was the biggest mistake of yer life."

Solaaris focused the lens of its only functioning front-facing camera and looked around.
The Brute had disappeared and so had parts of Solaaris' own body.
It could see Westree unloading a fury of bullets into a raider while talking to him in a voice that Solaaris couldn't recognise.

The body's modules could be repaired if they got back to base, but its mind couldn't. Solaaris decided that from now on, safety was a priority.
Suddenly, a targets.log file popped up on its dashboard with Raider 17 as the last entry.
Durward.
Solaaris tried to recall the remaining files that weren't corrupted to see if Durward was still okay, but it couldn't find any results.
Solaaris tried to communicate to its team but the commslink must have been damaged along with half its face.
Solaaris had to help Durward.

With no hostiles left for him to shoot Cayde stows his whetherd semi-auto shotgun on his back, pulls out a bottle of quantum nuka cola soda from one of his pouches, removes his helmet, and begins sipping on the cold drink.

All the while humming to the tune of 'I don't want to set the world on fire'.

"That was some high-efficiency xeno-killing I saw out there. Good work today. Now settle in. This place is our home for now. Captain wants it fortified ASAP. Those of you who're wounded, see the medics. Everyone else, take a few minutes, catch your breath, then get cracking.

"Hunters, I want some preliminary recon of the surrounding area. The rest of you, we've got some engineer drones tasked for construction, but we still need some programming and heavy lifting done. Oh, and we'll need to start cleaning up the mess you lot have caused here. No rest for the wicked, eh?"

The battle was over and for her part Dawn felt like she did quite well. After patching up the suits of the wounded she sequesters herself off in the easternmost building.

After finishing about half the drink Cayde caps the bottle and stuffs it back in its pouch. He watches and listens some of the other freelancers speak to Graves for a minute before going off to help set up the perimeter.

Who knows maybe they would find something of vaule out there although that was unlikely, if his past experience living in the wastes were anything to go off.

The Scavs scavenged everything that wasn't bolted or sealed to the ground.

"Looks like we did well for our first time." Tossing him a tablet that she had picked up along the way. "Wanna help me try to make the first Scav/Human dictionary?"

With the last of the Scavs butchered, Myrmidon took a moment to look at the Freelancer team she had fought alongside today. For what was mostly a ragtag band of rookies being "led" by veterans ranging from the elite Smokes to... Phaws, they had done an impressive work today in clearing the area. Other squadmates she hadn't worked with previously due to her brief absence had also done very well.

Brief, she wanted to say, but in truth it was all too long considering what they had lost during that time. She didn't expect to return asking for Delphi just to realize she was KIA during the one mission she missed.

Well, wherever she is now, she does not need to worry about the team she left behind, at least for now. Making sure it was safe to take off the helm for now, she faced towards the rookies that were still in the area.

"Good job everyone. It is a pleasure to greet many of you for the first time. I hoped we could meet under less dangeeous circumstances, but for a bunch of rookies I'm really imressed with all of you. Myrmidon at your service."

After the battle was over, Thoth stood ready for Graves like the rest, then thanked Myrmidon for her praise a few seconds before she started it. And after that Thoth found a quiet bit behind the east building and leaned against the wall, letting himself calm down after the battle. His head lolled back against the wall.

For a moment Thoth had peace, then he had a flash of Gallows about to come around the corner of the building and ask him if he wanted to make a dictionary of Scav. He didn't move.

"Looks like we did well for our first time," Thoth said in time with Gallows. He caught the tablet without looking, already knowing where it would be and when, and thus how to catch it. "Wanna help me try to make the first Scav/Human dictionary?" he said, once more in near-perfect time with Gallows. "We only have a few minutes," he told her, "so keep it brief. Here, let's go somewhere better than here. Inside?"

Phaws cracked a metallic gauntlet against the bullet-scarred barrier behind them, then winced as muscles abused by fire and shot let their annoyingly clear dismay be known in a ripple of nooceptic feedback.

"Sorry about almost igniting the battery"

Ah, the grinding pain in Phaws' shoulder was a metallic fragment, shiver thin and clean through the armor. That did explain the disjointed sensation.

"And the warehouse"

Spent a moment trying to dislodge it by reaching behind the armor plate, didn't do much but leave rippling afterscars in the world around.

"And this bit, here"

Phaws straighted up, pulled of the gauntlet and tried to unclench torn fingers.

"Oh and the crates over there. Yeah, those too. Whoop. Kinda went a little overboard on the whole "infuse small materials with abhoherent energy to violently cascade local geospatiality. You would not believe how much my hands hurt right now and..."

Was that smell... something sugary? And drinkable? Phaws blinked bloodshot eyes, practically threw off the battered, carbonscarred helmet and only resisted the urge to lunge by the practicaly of their legs giving out, neccessitating a dignified stumble back against the crate. Gah, Durward was /right/ /there/ and his armor was so /LOUD/.

"YEAH. CAYDE. I'll have one. And Westree? Git to. You can take your dashing duster clad ass to the nearest freezer and get me a pick-me-up. Non... alcoholic, actually. Yeah. This "Sobriety" thing is annoying, but I'm used to being able to feel paint in my retina now so heyyy why not.

And kids?"

Phaws stumbled. Tried a smile. Tried another grimace. Made a heroic attempt at a fascimile of what might, in good light and on a person less covered in ash, be a grin.

"You did... good. Phaws' proud. Good job. 'Specially you, Westree. And Myrmidon. An Durward. If you'd just... be a little less... scintilating. "

Assignment (and possible partner) received, the robot takes a moment to resupply from the dropship's stores before setting off into the wastes and ruins.

"Ladies first..." Gallows says stepping into the building. With a short click, she takes off her helmet, her red hair flowing down onto her shoulder. As she stretches her neck, her bright red jugulars, and veins that riddle her neck, show themselves.

Noticing the little medic that had saved her life, Gallows smiles, before approaching. "Oh hi Dawn. What are you up to?"

Hoping down from her little post she looks Gallows up and down. "Is your helmet malfunctioning? My scan shows you in the green." She taps her palm against her head, checking to see if something is jammed. "If my systems are malfunctioning Im gonna be in deep trouble."

Thoth waves off Dawn's concerns. "No, nothing's malfunctioning, she just feels like taking it off," he says. The she in question, Gallows, began to keel over and pretend to choke and dramatically claw at her throat beside him. Then he twitches slightly.

"We haven't gotten the go-ahead for free breathing. The air could be tainted, the long term effects could be horribly damaging. Let alone what could happen to ones eyes, nostrils, or-" he said quickly, concerned, in a passable mimic of Dawn's voice. He blinks. "That is so bizarre, I mimic the way people say things, not just the words." He shakes his head, trying to clear his mind briefly of the multiple different trains of thought all raging at once. With only minor success. "I don't think in this profession people worry much about long term effects," he says gravely, then pauses as though considering. Really, I may be taking me helmet off myself, but..." Thoth shifts uncomfortably. "It makes me feel safe, having it on, so I keep it." Clearly not wanting to dwell, he barely hesitates before moving on. "So does having a good Priest near me. Good healing, thanks."

Taking a moment to mull over the fact that the air was indeed not toxic Dawn flicks a series of locks around her collar and with a small release of pressure, lifts her helmet up and over her head.

"Im sorry but do you perhaps have a software issue? Unconscious mimicry and foresight are sometimes aside effect of the Magi infusion."

Checking her gauntlet she presses a few buttons, making it purr a moment before the needle slides out. "If youd like I can give you a small dose of sedatives that may reduce outbursts."

"Operator Gallows, what are you working on?"

Cayde pauses to reach in his pouch, grabbing a full bottle, then tosses to Phaws, she manages to catch it and eagerly takes the cap off.

After giving a quick thumbs up to the explosive mage he reaches into a second pouch, this one carrying spare weapon parts, and pulls out a suppressor. After a quick inspection of the object, he takes out his shotgun and attaches the suppressor with practiced, fluid motions.

After a moment he decides to follow leopard, better to go out with someone else to back you up in case you got into trouble.

Well, it finally seemed like it was over. The guns were active and the base was cleared. They managed to make this planet a bit safer. She wasn't sure how much, but she was sure this place would help with future missions.

Cleaning up fro her sniper's den, Vacia quickly makes her way back to the ground, she begins unclasping her helmet, bringing it to her side a she nears Commander Graves.

"Managed to get five, not the best numbers but i'm sure I can improve." She manages a smile, pulling up her hand to reveal a number of clinking medals that she had pulled off her victims. "Oh and Commander Graves. Since i'll be staying here for a while, would you mind giving this to my daughter at HQ?" She fishes for something at her back, eventually producing the scav sword she took of the Raider. "She loves this kind of stuff, trust me when I say the smile on her face will be worth it." If he accepts, she'd hand the sword to him, giving him a salute when he dismisses her.

In a fire fight like we were just in you'd be right the suppressor wouldn't be of that much of help.

But for recon into an urban area where gunshots will echo like crazy in a relatively quiet city, it'll help draw less attention of whatever is in the city.

Taking out her tablet, motioning towards Thoth to start taking notes, Gallows centres herself before rattling off the basic words that are easy enough to say with human vocal cords. "Did you know that there are roughly six words for the word kill? Maybe more depending on the words you say before it."

Halfway through her session, she noticed the hunter, standing there expecting an answer for the question that she had asked earlier. "Oh right... Sword... Sword, sword, sword..." Gallows stalls, her mind quickly rushing through the hundreds of different words. "The word for sword is weird. It's kind of a loud growling sound, with a metallic hiss sound overlaying it. Hard to say unless you jut your lower jaw out and breath loudly, with a grumbling sound in your throat." She says, mimicking the sound.

After detailing the words for the different tactical orders, Gallows looked down at the tablet she was writing in, now scrawled with a horrible mess of symbols that would have made barely any sense to anyone that wished to read. "I can fix this when my throat doesn't hurt as much..." She says, placing the notes beside her. "So... I already know Thoth's story for being here... But what are your guy's stories? Must be interesting?"

"My story? Well, I got into the smuggling business at a very young age, met a real charming fellow and well, he helped me bring my daughter in the world. It didn't take long for a job to bad, charming rogue is dead and I end up blowing up a Scav light cruiser. After that, I just said fuck it and decided to start killing Scavs more efficiently."

"Forced Infusion" Dawn mumbles. "Had an aptitude for memorizing scripture and psalm. Was part of the clergy for as long as I can remember. Always candle light and holo-tablets." Dawn turns her wrist and the long needle shrinks back with a mechanical sigh.

"After that I was forced to take the Infusion and here I am. 8 years later and finally "developed" enough to serve on the front. My growth disorder made me a boarderline failure but a desperate times."

Thoth eyes the needle quietly, muttering indistinctly to himself for a while despite the fact that he'd already made up his mind, and this continues even as he notes down what Gallows is saying and everything else, only stopping as he hears the words 'Forced Infusion' several seconds before anyone else heard it.

The muttering was replaced with a hum of disapproval just as Dawn, in real time, began to speak. A few seconds after Dawn was done speaking in his mind, but as she was calling herself a 'borderline failure', Thoth retorted with "I'm not seeing a failure right now." Then he tried a reassuring smile, only realising a moment later that he still had his helmet on. Oh well, he wasn't taking it off.

Skimming through the rest of the list he unconsciously mumbles his thoughts.

"Brain implant, skeleton enhancements, limbs, hearts, yaddy yaddy yadda... Every seems okay, good, defiantly don't want to end up like Georgia." The Hunter shutters at the memory.

Shaking his head he turns his focus to his recon partner. "So Leopard, what exactly are you hoping to find out here? Anything in particular or just looking to wander into something interesting?"

The machine sweeps their surroundings for a moment longer before crouching behind cover to answer.
"A scav for every bullet between us would satisfy my hunger; a council of thanes would ease my hate; nothing but burnt husks of destroyed enemy craft would please my pride; human survivors would bolster my hopes for the future; remains of the lost would teach us, and grant their spirits the rest they deserve.
That is more answer than you sought, isn't it? Briefly, no, nothing specific. I just hope we find whatever may be out here before it finds us."

"Sounds good, also I don't mind lengthy answers, you can gain a lot of interesting tidbits by listening to others ramble on, and from the sounds of it you have a deep hatred for the Scavs."

Stopping by Leopard, Cayde looks over the abbandoned city, still miles away. It looked like a metropolis worn away by time, towers of dull metal and glass piercing the clouds, cars and trucks left abandoned on the highways, and nature slowly taking back the land that once belonged to it.

Between them and the city he could see hundreds of thin, whispy smoke clouds rising into the air from distant fires, fires that belonged to Scav encampments.

Sighing he shakes his head "What I wouldn't give to be piloting Titan right now."
