“… and so holding the crossroads here at Nisson will be vital.” You, Griselda, and Iris go over a potential plan with the new understanding of what Mei’s goal is. She wants to divide the team up and conquer. Preferably she’ll want to eliminate the best portions first before eliminating the weaker ones at her leisure. As a result, it appears that the plan is to keep the team together. Griselda wants one big line at Nisson, with what slugging tanks we may get on the hills behind. The issue will be the forestation outside of the roads and some select clearings, which will obscure sight. Especially the hills all around the roads too. “Any questions?” asks Griselda. You all shake your head. “Right. Before we get out there. Let’s tackle the elephant in the room.”

“The reinforcements haven’t shown up,” says Iris.

“Yet,” says Griselda. “I was promised tanks. Enough for all of our crews, no more than that.”

You say, “Did they say precisely what tanks they would be?” you ask.

Griselda shakes her head. “No. But I assume reserve tanks. I can’t ask the teams to put their starters out for us. Washington, Heinlein, Mariano da Silva, Gagetown, and Saint Gloriana have all pledged tanks.”

“What about the other teams?” asks Iris.

“Mechanics,” says Griselda. “For getting our actual tanks up to speed, hopefully in time for the match tomorrow.”

Iris takes a sip of tea, sighing deeply. “We’ll be in a bind if the tanks do not show up by the time the match starts, Griselda.”

“Even if they the tanks don’t show up, we’ll still win. I believe in our team, Iris. You should too.” Iris nods slowly, taking another sip of tea. Griselda smiles a little at your enthusiasm, rolling the map up and putting it into her satchel. “The match doesn’t start for a little bit anyway. So we have time.”

Griselda says, “Ellie’s right. Let’s just focus on briefing our crews. If we don’t have enough tanks for everyone, we may have to leave someone behind. You two though I can’t afford to lose. You two are dismissed. Try and get everyone in a fighting spirit, alright?”

With that, you leave Griselda’s tent. The match locale was quite chilly, a little unseasonably so. There was forecast for rain tomorrow as well, which meant nothing but cloudy skies today. You can’t even see the sun out there. Good news though is that means there won’t be any glare off of your tanks armor at least. Iris says, “I’ll get to getting Serafina and the other heavy crews up to speed,” says Iris. “Ellie, I must say, I’m skeptical.”

“Of the tanks arriving?” you say.

“No. Of us winning today,” says Iris. “Even if we receive those tanks, they’re tanks we’ve never driven before. We normally need much more familiarization first before we get fluent in their works.”

“Have faith.” You pat her arm, smiling at her. “I’m sure they’ll do their best.”

“Of course.” Iris huffs. “I suppose a lady must have faith when no one else does.”

The newly reconstructed Oliver was getting a quick polish and shine before the match by your crew. You could see that Josephina was cleaning out the viewports, Stack was hosing down the treads, and Winona and Ingrid were sponging down the engine block too. “Hey, everyone.” They all look to you and stop what they’re doing, ready to hear the news. “… Um. Just saying hi. Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Rumor is that other schools are going to provide us tanks,” says Ingrid. “Is that true?” You nod. “Oh. Well, shit. We might have a chance after all.”

“Eh?” You tilt your head. “You don’t think we have a chance?”

“They’re bringing twenty Centurions,” says Josephina. “Plus all of them are some of the best of the best Tankery has to offer. I’m not saying we don’t but… it does seem quite the challenge.”

“Now, come on guys!” Stack stomps her foot, pouting at them. “Have some faith! Don’t make me turn this hose on you all, it’s a cold morning and I know you’re not wearing a bra, Winona!”

Winona folds her arms, looking away innocently. “Neither are you.”

“Guys, guys.” You hold up your hands, trying to calm them down. “Look, I know it may seem a little challenging right now. But nobody ever said this tournament would be easy. I got faith in you, okay?”

Ingrid sighs, shaking her head. “We are so fucked.”

“Stack.” You point to Ingrid. Stack rather casually points the hose at Ingrid and sprays her.

“AAAHHH!” Ingrid yelps as she hops off the tank. Winona ducks down to avoid getting hit as Ingrid covers herself, shivering. “You bastard! It’s fucking cold outside!” Stack responds by spraying her with more water. “AAAH!”

Stack says, “You’ll get used to it!” Ingrid responds by throwing a sponge into Stack’s face. “Ah! Come here!” You step back and watch as Stack keeps on spraying Ingrid while Ingrid musters up wet rags and sponges to throw back. Winona cheers Ingrid on while Josephina simply dutifully keeps on cleaning. A little discipline would be nice. This is such a far cry from Zhou Enlai.

Then you hear it. Griselda shows up in her Dodge truck, slapping the dash to alert you. “Ellie, get in! The tanks are here!” Really? You hurry over before your crew can respond. You hop on and let Griselda drive you away.

“When you called ahead, you put us in a spot for sure, eh.” Meryl Hoffmeister talks with the two of you over the phone as she shows off the tanks that she and the other teams will be providing. Several mechanics from Hugo Gernsback, J. Walter Christie, and even Glenn Curtiss have arrived to prepare them for the match. “We’ve provided you all with competition spec tanks. Five M4A3E8 Shermans, two M24 Chaffees, two Churchill IV tanks, and one M36 Jackson. I’ll leave Griselda to do the distribution among the crews.” All of the teams have been assembled to see what tanks they’ll be using to offset their disadvantage. The only originals you’ll be taking are your tank, Griselda’s Sherman, the King Tiger, Hadley’s Jackson, and Iris’ own Churchill. Three heavies, two Jacksons, a lot of Mediums, and two Chaffees. At least you’ll have some mobility though.

Serafina looks at the Churchill, grumbling a bit. “It’s slower than our Pershing though.”

“Forget that!” Regina climbs into the other Churchill. “A tank is a tank! Let’s DO THIS!”

Griselda checks her watch. “We only have an hour before the match starts, Elodie.” Everyone starts figuring out who goes to which tank. Dalia has already found herself a Chaffee to replace the Hellcat. “Ellie, listen, I-…” Everyone stops as another jeep rolls up onto the scene. You all know who she is.

Mei Xiang, being driven by Josie Stillwell. The two of them roll up in the jeep to see what’s what. Serafina and the Poles immediately dismount to confront them, but are stopped by a glare from Iris. Mei stands up in her seat, grabbing the windshield for a bit of support as she looks at you and Griselda. “I see you have had to beg and borrow for a better line up than you currently possess,” says Mei.

Griselda squints, stepping up. “Watch what you say, Mei. It’s not wise to call your shots.”

Mei looks to you, then says, “We will see who wins out here.”

“We will. Good luck to you, Mei.” Mei sizes you up, then she sits down and nods to you.

Josie offers her hand. “Good luck.” You shake it quickly. Griselda does as well. With that, they go driving off.

Griselda steps up to you. “I’m surprised. I thought the two of you were supposed to be like… bitter rivals. Like hate each other.”

“Rivalry is one thing, hate is another,” you say. You clench your fists, watching their jeep as it goes away. This one is for Arisu. This one is for all Tankers. “Let’s do this.”

The flare shoots up into the sky and explodes, signaling the start of the march. It took a while for everyone to get into position, trying to get used to their tanks and all. But you were all ready now.

“Alright, let’s get moving. Everyone to the crossroads,” says Griselda.

> Follow the road, quicker travel.

You decide to leave the team in the dirt and get on the road. The Chaffees follow behind you as you go top speed down the road. You lean back in the cupola hatch, watching the skies for any signs of smoke clouds or anything that would indicate movement from Zhou Enlai. Just have to beat them there to get a good advantage. Those Centurions may be good, but they’re not too fast. Not fast like your Comet anyway. You take a breath and let the wind flap about in your hair.

Some time later, you start approaching the crossroads at Nisson. The Chaffees are hundred yards or so behind you, with the rest of the team bringing up the rear. You did spot some clouds of smoke indicating movement from ZES in the distance. But nothing that could tell you where they’re going or what they’re doing.

For all you know, maybe they have the same idea to take a point and defend it to the death.

Right then, what now?

> Set up on the hills west of Nisson.

You take your tanks up on the hills. Hopefully you’ll at least get a better view of the area along with some high ground to fire down on the incoming enemy. Nisson has a few buildings here and there but nothing that can’t be blown apart to provide a clear line of fire. You set up on the north hill and let the Chaffees take the south one, then you grab your binoculars and take a look.

Hm. Still can’t see where they might be. Though if your intuition is telling you something, it’s that Mei won’t be stupid enough to run her entire team down the crossroads to be blown apart by a well dug in defensive line. No sir, she’ll probably attempt something more clever. A flanking maneuver? You take the map out and take a look.

There do seem to be crossing points in the wetlands to the north, where the terrain is flatter and possibly good enough for tanks to cross. With all these trees, it’d take them a while but they’d surely not take that route or else they might end up getting bogged down.

On the other hand, they might try and run everyone down the crossroads and attempt to engage in close combat. Considering most of your team is operating in tanks they haven’t used ever, this might work to their advantage. Not to mention they outnumber your people.

Hm. She’s got quite a few options here.

“Ellie, Griselda. How are things looking out there?” asks Griselda.

Send Lyra specifically, up to that Northern ridgeline, with orders to watch but not engage, if she sees movement she should pull back to our position immediately. As tempting as it is to try to set up a blocking position, that's exactly what Mei wants us to do, spread out and split up so she can defeat us in detail.

“Let’s get everyone into town, Griselda. But I’m going to send someone up to watch the north flank.”

“Got it.”

“Lyra.” You radio in to Lyra Caldwell in one of the Chaffees.

“What’s up?” she asks. “Need me to win this battle for you? Or perhaps you’re finally admitting to me being the superior officer?”

“Lyra, please. I just need you to get up to the north ridgeline at the following coordinates. I need you to watch our flank. Don’t engage if you see any Zeus tanks out there. You pull back immediately and warn us, got it?”

“I got it, I got it,” she says. You see her Chaffee roll out of its position and start moving northwards. In the meantime however, the rest of the team rolls into Nisson and starts taking positons. Griselda has set the Churchills to be the center line of the defense outside of Nisson. To the south of them in the treeline were the rest of the team in the mediums. Griselda had left a deliberate hole in the defense so that if Mei’s plan was to charge in, they’d go directly for that hole as the path of least resistance, whereupon the southern flank can hinge inwards and close in from behind them. Relatively simple plan.

“We’re here!” says Lyra. “Watching the line!”

“We’re ready,” says Iris.

“Ready here!” says Hadley. “No sign of the Chinese!”

“Well, they’re not really Chinese, Hadley,” says Serina.

With that, you have to wait.

You pull up your binoculars again. The smoke clouds of their movement has dissipated.

Hm. Strange. Actually, not too strange actually. No, what Mei is planning could be quite devious. She knows you’ll have the strategic terrain. She knows that you’ll set up a defensive position here. And while you are keeping the team together against their expectations and staying put, that plays into their strength of superior numbers. If you can’t divide their forces, they can just crush you with their overwhelming numbers and superior tank technology.

You check the map again. If they swing in from the north, going west directly will be difficult due to the rivers and the hills. People would fall behind and get picked off. To retreat in orderly fashion, you’d have to go south, where you’ll be boxed in by steeper hills that the slower tanks can’t climb.

Hm…

No. You’ve deciphered it now. She wants to come in from the north. And she wants to drive you down into a place where your mobility won’t matter, but her superior guns will.

Fuck. Alright. “Lyra, do you see anything?”

“I think I can see something. Rustling of trees, could be Zeus tanks. But I can’t tell how many. They’re northeast going west.”

“I see something too,” says Iris. “More movement in the trees along with some smoke. Can’t tell how many are out there.”

“Hold position,” says Griselda. “Let’s see what they do.”

Push up to the ridgeline just East of Nisson with the Shermans, adopting hull down positions. If we're lucky we'll catch Mei's force on the advance and put them on the clock to attack, hopefully forcing their hand before the Northern force can loop around, while positioning the Jacksons on the hill with us, where they can cover both North and the East effectively.

ZES are brawlers and confronted by our Sherman force they'll probably smoke up, suppress and assault in an attempt to overrun us, so we we'll immediately surrender the ridge as we do, and make a dog's breakfast of it while we do, intentionally mis-manoeuvring or firing off wild shots in the process. Make it look like Griselda has lost control of a poorly disciplined team, just as has nearly happened in previous matches.

To the North, Lyra should do donuts behind that hill and zoom around between it and Nisson as hard as she can, make as much noise, dust and smoke as possible to convince ZES we're sending the rest of the team North to secure a line of retreat, encouraging them to be cautious and recce before advancing.

Altogether, this should create an impression that our Eastern position is crumbling and the main ZES force will hopefully chase us over the ridge to overrun them, only to get torn up by the dug in Churchills, recovered Shermans and the Jacksons on top of the hill, as well as us.

“Wait, Griselda. I got an idea.”

“Let’s hear it.”

Once you explain the plan, Griselda is all-too willing to send the order. All the Sherman tanks move up to the ridge to the east. The Jackson tanks move up onto the hill that you sit upon. Now all you have to do is wait. Lyra knows what to do as well. You already see her burning gas as she zooms around in her position, causing ruckus and smoke as you wait for the ZES advance to show itself.

And finally, after what seemed like hours, you hear cannon fire. “We’re under attack!” says Suvorov. “I see three Centurions!” The Shermans, dug in on the ride, return fire back. “Can’t see much else through the trees and smoke!”

“Copy that,” you say. “Lyra, anything from your end?”

“We’re tearing this place up but I don’t see any Zhou Enlai tanks yet!” she explains. Hm. You’ve caught their advance.

“Alright, Suvorov, lead the tanks back, go!” The Shermans start pulling back, but as order to: in chaotic and disorganized fashion. They fire off shots in wild directions, they muddy themselves and get caught on top of each other, but they manage to make it back before any shots manage to connect. Alright. Let’s wait for them now.

Nothing again. The fuck? You take another look through the binoculars. Nobody’s going over the ridgeline. You do spot the three Centurions barely sitting at the bottom of the ridge line out of your range. You do see a whole load of smoke behind them though. Are there more tanks coming? You take another look north. Wait, more smoke. “Lyra, do you see that?”

“I see it, yeah!” says Lyra. Suddenly you see explosions and cannonfire. “WHOA! WHOA!” You hear some explosions out of her radio. “Run, run away!”

“What’s going on!?” yells Griselda. “What’s happening!?”

“It’s the Chinese! They’re attacking from the north!”

“How many?” you ask.

“A LOT! I DIDN’T SEE- HOLY FUCK! A LOT, A LOT! LIKE TEN, TWLEVE!? I DON’T KNOW!” A lot!? You take another look down at the three Centurions again.

That’s not the main force. You take another look.

The main force is coming in from the north. Oh shit.

There is likely no main force. There's probably 10 to the east and 10 to the North, give or take one or two.

Alright, push Iris and one of the other Churchills up to the Northern base of the ridge where the hill will shield their rear from observation of fire from the Northern force with the other Churchill to the South. ZES will try to push the ridge once their Northern attack looks set to push home, but with Iris there and two more heavies to back her up on the reverse slope and on their flanks while the Jacksons can hit them from the front, they're going to lose tanks doing it, no matter how good they are.

Wheel the Shermans up back into Nisson, three defending the North road led by Gris, another three up into the hills with us to back up the Jacksons, we'll hook West slightly with the Chaffees, staying in the hills to prevent ZES flanking their positions through them and threaten them with flanking fire if they try to rush the town.
>>

> “Griselda, orders?”

Also this if she comes up with bunk.
>>
>>2082668
Well Schteel said main force so I'm inclined to take him at his word.
>>
>>2082724
It's an assumption based on a callout of ten to twelve tanks, panicking people over estimate almost without fail, so stick that on the low end, ten tanks, seven tanks unaccounted for, additional smoke east. The forces are most likely near numerical parity.
>>
>>2082737
Why are we even discussing this? I never mentioned numbers in my post.
>>
>>2082750
Because I'm guessing your reasoning's based on the idea that we'll have numerical advantage in a potential assault East, as it's the only way that would be well advised. I don't believe we'll be able to meaningfully achieve that, and instead be undertaking offensive action against a technically superior opponent with similar numbers while in unfamiliar vehicles. Consequently, I think it's a bad idea.
>>
>>2082779
I'm not that bothered by numbers. Although a numerical superiority would be nice and if we can get everyone then 15 vs 10 is fine.

My main reason is I don't want to be in a situation where we have to face them head on. Being pushed back on two flanks with no way to retreat leaves us with few options and our opponent outspecs us in every possible in such an engagement. I would prefer to break out of this encirclement and resume a mobile engagement rather than parking the bus.
>>
>>2082801
I don't think we're capable of persecuting a mobile engagement like that with most of the crews in vehicles they've never driven until this morning. As much as I dislike fixing us in place and fighting a static engagement, we must at least partially do so, both because our Churchills will make breaking contact together nigh impossible and also because I don't think our team's capable of doing otherwise in the given situation. Instead we will simply have to draw them into a static defence and use our few familiar tanks to swing engagements with more limited manoeuvres.

Okay. One of two things is happening here. Either Mei has divided her force evenly, and is using the northern push to either sandwich you into the south where you can’t escape or to the east into a well-prepared killzone OR Mei has sent the vast majority of her tanks and is using the smoke to the east as a decoy to make you think there’s more happening there than you think. Either is quite clever. Not clever enough to win today hopefully. “Iris, Regina. Head up and get behind the reverse slope. Griselda, I need your Shermans down in Nisson defending the northern approach. The rest up here with us. Dalia, Lyra, rally on me!”

Griselda says, “Understood!” Normally she’d be the one shouting the orders. But she seems to recognize there’s more at stake here. This is between you and Mei. “Let’s get rolling!”

Your tanks start moving around where they need to get to. You watch down the road as you move and see Lyra flying down the road in her Chaffee. Her approach is marked by the occasional burst from the ground from an AP shell skipping against it. She zooms around past the Sherman tanks. This is now about defending the north approach.

You can see the Centurions on approach. There aren’t too many trees covering you in this particular spot, but that means you can get clear sight on them and a clear shot. “Fire!” Your shot misses as the lead tank in the column dodges it deftly. The column of Centurions becomes visible to you. Ten at least but… You take another look. That’s Mei’s tank up there! You can see it now! That’s her tank you’re firing at. You can see her turned out, watching you in particular through binoculars. She has her turret turn to you and fire. “BRACE!” You hold on.

The shot impacts the tree next to your tank, spraying splinters and wood all over you. That was not aimed at you. She could shoot better than that.

Alright then, Mei. Let’s see what you got.

Another shot explodes a tree nearby. You keep your head down and your helmet tipped down to keep your eyes from getting peppered by splinters. Mei’s ten tanks were driving down the north road at speed up until she spotted you. But now they’ve stopped, and they’ve begun reversing! “Alright, move west, get on their tails!” You start moving your tank west, along with the Chaffees as well. The Jacksons as well provide invaluable suppressive fire from their position on the hill too. With your lack of familiar guns and their attempting to fire on the move, no one seems to gain any kind of advantage. This is a stalemate.

“I can’t see to hit them!” yells Winona. “They’re moving to-“ Mei suddenly pops smoke, as do the rest of the tank column. “Shit, she’s popped smoke I can’t see her now!”

Stack slams the side of the turret with her fist. “Cheating bitch!”

“They’re falling back!” yells Suvorov. “Should we pursue them!?”

Griselda says, “Ellie! You’re the one with the know-how here, what do we do?”

Stay together, and stay on her. Keep calm, don't get over excited in the chase.

>> Hold position.
We gain nothing through pursuit, she's trying to draw us out so she can fight us at and advantage, as long as we stay here and maintain good awareness, she can't sneak up on us, and we have solid defensive positions. Mei knows this and obviously doesn't want to attack, but nor do we have to go on the offensive, take a leaf out of Kursk's book and just wait. It looks a lot worse for ZES to run scared from us than it does for us to not go to them, Mei's pride and her desire to maintain the social capital of her team will bring her to us eventually.

>>
> Hold position.

“Hold, hold!” you shout. You all stop up on the farther west hill and watch. The smoke continues to obscure Mei’s position but she’s no longer firing. If she does fire, that’ll clear out the smoke. You decide on doing nothing for now. You have all the cards here and all the good sense to not try and divide yourself to chase her.

Of course, this means more waiting. You take out your binoculars again and scan around. Nothing from the east, nothing from the north again, nothing from the west.

The smoke eventually dissipates, revealing that Mei is… completely gone.

Okay. Not exactly what you were expecting. But she obviously intends to hit you where you aren’t expecting it. You take another look around. Where could she have gone? You don’t see any smoke trails or clouds around. “Are those tanks to the east still there?” you ask.

“Yes,” says Iris. “They’re holding fire. I think they’re waiting for us to move off the ridge.”

> Start scouting around

“Alright, Dalia, Lyra, follow me. We’re going to go scouting for Mei.” Mei is being quite cautious here. Almost uncharacteristically so. It’s as if she can figure out what you’re thinking. Considering she too is a student of the Shimada school (well technically you aren’t but still) has to mean the two of you are sharing some bright ideas. Great minds think alike. You take a breath, thinking. Mei wants you to go looking for her. She wants you out there so she can eliminate you personally.

Well, may as well not keep her waiting.

“Got it, we’ll fortify here,” says Griselda.

With that, you start directing your tanks to the west into the trees. The forest thankfully isn’t so thick that you can’t navigate the tanks around. But it does mean sight lines are obscured. You look up at the sky. You hope those clouds hold, you don’t want to rain on your parade today. You take your binoculars and keep scanning around.

“Ow!” Lyra gets whacked in the face by a tree branch. “Fucking trees!”

Dalia says, “I can see why Cavalry gets a debuff fighting in the woods!”

“Oh shit!” Suvorov yells out. “Dalia, you play Total War too!?”

“A little bit, yeah!” Dalia calls back.

“Cut the chatter,” you say. “Keep looking.”

Your tanks move slowly. As the Comet tank, you’re basically the Doberman among corgis here. The Chaffees can acquit themselves if they get to point blank but you’re the only one with a chance at medium to long range. You just have to hope Mei isn’t laying an ambush for you somewhere.

“Wait, there!” yells Lyra. She points out something ahead. “It’s a Centurion!”

You look ahead. Sure enough, Lyra must have eagle eyes or something because you do indeed spot a Centurion in the brush. The hull has been covered up with some camo netting, some sticks and leaves as well. But it’s distinct silhouette gives it away. It fires a shot, past you all. You flinch, grabbing the edge of the hatch as you see it stand its ground.

That's Mei's original plan. She expects us to lose discipline and go after her in small units. She probably understands that her plan isn't working like she hoped, but if we start going back to old ways, she and her team know what to do.

Can we make her think that's what we're doing and lead her into our trap somehow?

“Put a round into a weakpoint, Winona!” you order.

“On the way!” She fires the shot. It zooms through the trees and slams into the turret ring. The Centurion backs up slightly, crushing sticks and logs beneath its treads. Stack loads in the next round, an APCR shell. “Firing!” She fires another shot. This time right through the mantlet. A small fire bursts from the turret ring, and the tank halts to a stop.

> KO: AUGUST MAGEE (Centurion Mk I) (Elite)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Comet I “Oliver”)

“First catch of the day, girls!” Stack high fives an excited Winona.

“Let’s fall back, fall back!” you shout. Hopefully that inspires Mei to-

A shot explodes a tree behind you. What the fuck!? You duck down, dodging a log that barely avoids splitting your head open, then look over. It’s Mei again!

And the rest of her force! She’s caught you out alone! Mei signals for a shot from her cupola. The shot zooms towards your tank. “BRACE!” You grab on. The shot scrapes against the turret side, ricocheting into another tree. The Centurions move slowly, continuing to fire in turns to keep up a continuous barrage. Lyra and Dalia shout out indistinctly as they start reversing their Chaffees back. “It’s Mei!” you report. “She’s in the woods now!” Distance is just about 500 meters! But maneuvering will be incredibly tight.

“This is Iris, the eastern force is firing on the ridge again, I think they’re about to push,” she says.

The important part here is disengaging without giving Mei a kill, so break visual and use our superior speed to break off East, downhill and use the road to head back to town, then loop up to reinforce the hill positions. Give the Jacksons and Shermans on the hill the heads up to watch for ZES coming from the NW through the hills, thankfully the hill directly West of the crossroads is the tallest in the whole area, so we'll still be able to see them approaching and hit them as they do.

“Turn us around and get us out of here, Josie!” The Comet pivots on its center then starts speeding west. The Chaffees both follow you out as well, the three of you reinforcing the notion of retreating with a bit of smoke. “Griselda, did you get any of that?”

“We did! Can you hold?”

“I bet we can!” yells Benny.

“I bet you can’t!” Dalia shouts back.

“Just watch us, fucking purist!”

“You watch your mouth!”

“Shut up!” you scream. A shot flies past your head and slams into another tree. You and the Chaffees make it back to the easternmost hill overlooking the town then turn your hulls westward. Mei has taken a sidelong approach and is now setting up on one of the hills near a stream. They fire a volley all at once. The impact shakes the earth with high explosive fire, making everyone shout and call out in shock.

“Fuck me!” says Lyra. “Can these people not hit us!?”

“They’re not trying to hit us!” says Dalia. “They’re trying to get our dander up!”

“Fuck’s that mean!?” asks Benny.

“It means they’re trying to make us mad!” Dalia shouts back.

Hadley says, “We have shots, we’re taking them!” Both Jacksons open up on the Centurions. 90mm shells scrape past tree branches and bushes and slam into the ground all around Mei’s skirmish line. No hits or effects though. Mei responds with a very long shell slamming into Hadley’s tank. However, it doesn’t penetrate. No, it explodes into a cloud of white sparkling smoke. “AAAHH! WILLY PETE! IT BURNS!”

“It’s not in the tank,” Hadley’s gunner remarks. “BUT HOLY SHIT I CAN’T SEE!” You look back to see the embers of the white phosphorus catching on tree branches and leaves, sparking some fires all around.

“Lyra, Dalia, you can’t do anything here, get down to the twon. Gris, I need you and another Sherman up here!”

“Got it!” says Griselda. You have Stack load up White Phosphorus shot, then fire away. It slams into one of the Centurions. Everyone else seems to get the same idea and starts firing White Phosphorus shells or regular smoke out there as well. A smoke shell slams into the front of your Comet, blasting white smoke into you.

“Don’t sweat it!” you say. “Keep firing!” The team keeps firing white phosphorus and smoke down range, occasionally throwing in real AP rounds in there. ZES meanwhile keeps throwing down smoke rounds and white phosphorus at you with the occasional AP round slamming into the ground all around you. Eventually it gets to the point where you can’t even see past the barrel of the Comet. Griselda has probably already arrived at this point, along with Suvorov assumedly.

“Cease fire!” you yell. You cough a little, shutting the hatch quickly. “Anybody see anything?”

“I see lots of white and fires being cooked up!” yells Jane. “Reminds me of an SJW rally!” Ah, she had to get that in, huh?

“Can’t see anything,” says Griselda. “We need to wait for this smoke to clear. Did anyone get any good shots out there?”

“Nah. They’re good at dodging, I’ll give them that,” says Benny.

“They’re good at dodging shells at point blank, you expected them to just hold still for shells coming from like a mile away?” Dalia says.

“Shut up!”

“Griselda, Elodie. Problem,” says Iris. “The eastern body of Mei’s team is pulling back.” What? “We can’t see them anymore, they’ve gone into the trees northwards.”

“They’re trying to attack us when we’re thinned out,” you say. “Don’t fall for it. Iris, you see anything?”

“Nothing,” she says. “They’ve completely abandoned this flank in my theory.”

Griselda calls you. “Ellie. They’re seeing right through most of our tricks and tactics. We’re eventually going to have to chase them.” Hm.

Your intuition tells you that Griselda is right. Mei is being rather cautious. Rightfully so in your opinion. She’s probably studied your team much more extensively than you thought. Defensive lines on a hill are an absolute bitch and a half to take for tanks, even for ones as advanced as hers. She’s going to wait for you to pursue her.

Hmph. You’re not falling for it.

"Actually Gris, we won't have to chase them, much as they're seeing through our tricks we're seeing through theirs, we've thwarted their plan and even though we only claimed one tank make no mistake, we just won the first engagement of the match handily. Mei will have to lick her wounds and think of a new approach, we're doing the right thing."

> Dig in.

“Looks like we’ll have to dig in, Griselda.”

“Eh?”

“We’ve thwarted their plans for today. We only got one kill but we won the first engagement. We’re playing our cards right. She’ll have to think of a new approach. We’re holding the advantage, let’s keep it that way.”

“Aw, come on!” Benny shouts. “We’re just going to wait?”

“If we rush down there, they’ll slaughter us,” Suvorov says. “I’m perfectly fine with that! Let’s wait for General Winter to side with us, then we’ll see who’s laughing!”

“You know, they say never to get into a land war with China,” says Patton.

“We dig in here,” says Griselda. “Grab some shovels and start breaking dirt. We’re going to wait for those bastards to come to us.” With that, you all dismount and grab shovels. You see the Jacksons and Shermans digging in on the top of the hill, reinforcing as well with sandbags too. You and the crew dig a pit for the Comet, making sure to take shifts so that at least one person is inside the Comet at all times.

This takes a few hours. By the darkening of the sky, you can already tell it’s probably somewhere around 4 O’Clock. And you were getting hungry. Winona nudges you as you dig and offers you an energy bar. You grab it and start eating. Ugh, to have a real meal right now. “You don’t think Mei will really keep this up will you?”

“I don’t assume so,” you say. You look and see some smoke trails to the east and to the north. Mei is probably on the move but she’s nowhere near your position. She’s probably trying to aim for another attack at some place softer.

No reason to leave. Has ZES had a lot of long matches in the past? And what are NATO's rules about pizza delivery/airlift?
>>
>>2085343
Teams can request timeouts for food deliveries. This is an incredibly common thing with Kursk matches.
>>

Alternate with Gris and Iris walking between the tanks, talking to the crews and setting them at ease, letting them know why we're holding up and how important is that we win the waiting game against Mei's team, while keeping morale up. You know, leadership things.

Will it be viable to use that dummy tank tactic with the log like in our match with the spg team.

I wonder if we can send out scouts on foot once we've dug in to see what the ZES girls are planning.

I don't want the girls to suffer from some /k/ green text story. Schadenfreude aside.

“Augh! MREs!?” Winona pouts furiously upon having to open her MRE bag. You all open them up to see what you get from them. “Ew… I’ve heard some bad stuff about these.” She’s got the chili course. Oh boy.

“Eh, if you wanted to eat something better, you should’ve packed something better,” Stack says bluntly as she munches on some MRE crackers. The five of you have decided to have an early dinner in your tank. Josephina and Ingrid are turned out of their respective hatches, with Ingrid sketching down some notes over a mug of coffee while Josephina munches on her food quietly. Meanwhile, you sit on the turret top with Stack and Winona. You take a sip of juice and shudder. Eugh. Winona’s not wrong, that’s for sure.

You see Griselda step up to your tank. You stand up, looking down at her. Griselda smiles. “Looks like we’re in for a siege, Ellie. You ready?”

“Most definitely,” you say. “We can wait if they can.” The crew all look down at Griselda. Griselda munches on a chocolate bar, nodding thoughtfully.

Griselda sighs, looking out to where you had last seen the ZES tanks. “I knew Mei wouldn’t be easy to put down this is certainly something even Gertrude wouldn’t have faced. However this goes, Ellie, this is going to be a learning experience for the both of us.”

Winona says, “We’ll wipe that smug smirk off of Mei’s face, Gris!”

“Yeah!” Stack pumps her fist. “We’ll show her what for, won’t we?”

“I appreciate it, guys. I really do,” says Griselda. “I’ll go talk with the other crews. Ellie, you should do the same. We might end staying the night over. Could even miss school on Monday.” Hm. That’d be nice. With that, Griselda leaves you.

Stack sighs, grin on her face. “I’d love to miss out on Monday.”

Winona frowns. “It’s gonna be a terrible night sleep though. What if they try to sneak up on us at night?”

“It won’t go into the night,” says Ingrid. “They’ll come at us the same old way and we’ll beat them the same old way.”

You take a breath, then munch on some crackers. However it goes, you know one thing for sure.

You are not going to lose.

this match is going to last a month oh god

That's all I have for tonight since I got work tomorrow morning. Quests will be a bit iffy this week since it's Thanksgiving and I got family coming up. But we'll see what happens. Hope you all enjoyed.

Thanks for the fun, boss.

Does NATO have rules regarding length of matches or required time outs in the case of long matches?

Or does one team just call time out for naps?
>>
>>2085578
To be fair. This is pretty much the idiological boss battle. They are often grand in scope. Also it is well known that Mei and Elodie are the chessmasters of NATO.

Good thread. Wished I could participate more, but looking forward to it!
>>
>>2085593
There is technically no rule in regards to how long a match should be. You can only request time outs for things like food or injuries.

As for naps, that's purely on an honor system.
>>
>>2085608
Right. We'll need to post guards and rotate naps.

>>2085610

We need everyone in the best shape they can be. Nighttime spy shenanigans do not help that.

What are NATO rules on wandering around outside of a tank or spy shenanigans during a match?
>>
>>2085714
I was thinking super annihilation battle, not spying.
>>
>>2085757
If we do shenanigans I was thinking tripwire smoke charges. Freak them the fuck out.

Loud noises near their campsites like air horns. Anything to get a jump out of them.

2 or 3 people rotating out all night could keep their entire team awake. They'd be exhausted by dawn. But if we were going to try that, it would have to be legal and it would have to be worth the strain it would put on our team.

We won't be able to move our force very far if they keep their engines off, or have a team parked a little ways away all night. They'd hear us on the move and watch the hill like hawks if they thought we were trying to move off it.
>>
>>2085797
I was going to kidnap crew members and steal vital parts but I guess psychological warfare works too.
