You are Nakoma Igasho, an Abnaki warrior of the Onetaima Confederacy, and you have been training and studying your entire life for the coming days. Since passing your trials you've been eager to leave, and now your wait is almost over.

Tomorrow is the day. Smoke from the longhouse's fire drifts towards the roof while its crackles are drowned out by the low murmur of the other warriors' conversations. You, along the the rest of your peers, have been summoned by the Keeper of the fire, your town's eldest leader, to discuss the Pitchi. Nervous excitement floods through your body at the thought of the great journey that lays before you, though before you can lose yourself in those thoughts a reverent hush falls over the longhouse. Your eyes follows the group's gaze to the fire, where Keeper Apenimon has settled into a comfortable cushion in front of everybody.

"Good morning, children," She starts, a warm smile spread across her ancient face, "It is so good to see all of your bright faces today. I know you are all excited for your Pitchis, however there are some among you that have not completed your trials. I must ask that those without a sponsor capable of accompanying them by the end of the day leave the longhouse now. I regret that it must be this way, but the law is absolute. I assure you that any who cannot depart this year will have their chance next spring."

Several frustrated groans reach your ears as a handful of your peers stand and make their way towards the door. A quick movement in your peripheral vision draws your attention to your friend Kohana sitting next to you. She starts to push herself up, only to falter and settle back onto the floor, shooting you a nervous glance as you quirk a curious eyebrow at her, though before you have the chance to ask her what she's doing, Apenimon has picked up where she left off.

"Excellent, now we can get started." The Keeper sighs kindly, before straightening up and discarding her grandmotherly tone, "Tributes! You are all about to venture forth on your Pitchi, this is a time for exploration and adventure, an opportunity to experience all that the world has to offer. But do not forget! You have a duty to your people to return with an offering to strengthen us all, and if you do not fulfill this duty then you can not be trusted to take part in leading our society. You may live among us, love with us, grow prosperous and fight and die with us, but you will never be -equal- to us."

Your heart pounds at Apenimon's forceful words, for your entire life this woman had been nothing but kind to everybody in Waynoka, and she always knew the right thing to say in order to soothe you, or to push you just that extra bit more to succeed. As your eyes drift across the longhouse, you're not surprised to see that everybody else's gaze is riveted on the Keeper...who seems to have gone deathly silent. Slowly your head turns back towards the fire, only for your blood to run cold at the sight of the Keeper's angry scowl staring back at you.

You start to open your mouth, unsure what to say, but are interrupted by your Elder's grandmotherly facade returning, though her strict tone does not fade, "Kohana Akecheta...have you found a sponsor?" She asks suspiciously, leading you to swing your gaze towards your friend.

"A-ah...I h-have, Keeper!" Kohana stutters out nervously before pushing herself to her feet, "Nakoma is my sponsor!"

Your eyes widen with surprised confusion at her answer, you're absolutely certain that you never agreed to that. "Is this true, Nakoma?"

Apenimon's cool tone sends a shiver up your spine, and your eyes briefly dart to her displeased, but curious, expression before glancing back towards your friend as she stares at you anxiously, practically silently begging you to play along.

If you did that, then you'd be expected to make sure that Kohana passed her Askari trials, effectively accompanying her into adulthood. You may not have minded the idea of sponsoring her trial on any other day, but you had been hoping to be well rested for your journey tomorrow. Of course, if you don't play along then there's no telling what the Keeper will do to punish your friend...you've never heard what happens to tributes who don't pass their trials, or their sponsors for that matter.

"Well, Nakoma?"

What should you tell the Keeper?

>Yes, you'll sponsor Kohana. You may not know why she chose to spring this on you here and now, but the two of you are friends, practically family.

I suspected it could end up being pretty slow, especially in the early threads. On the bright side, the thread will be up that much longer. No need to start a new thread after work tomorrow.

At any rate, I'll give a little bit of time for any other voters, and if they don't come I'll roll the other dice myself. Also, thanks for playing!

The weight that you feel on your shoulders seems to grow a little as you consider the limited options before you, "This is the first time that I've heard about it..." You slowly admit, wincing a little as your friend's shoulders slump and the Keeper frowns with concern.

"In that case, I mus-"

"I'm not saying no, Keeper!" You interrupt, drawing a surprised silence from Apenimon, "I just...there's a lot to do before I leave tomorrow. I want to make sure that I would actually be a good sponsor for Kohana. I -know- she could pass her trials with the right one."

A pensive expression washes across the elder's face at your words, and the way that she looks at you before switching her gaze back to your friend makes you feel as if she's trying to measure you as a person, something that you've began to grow used to over the last few years. "Very well, Nakoma, since you believe that she is ready then I will allow you some time to consider it." She decides, before nodding pointedly towards Kohana, "And you will have the opportunity to make your case to him, child...and explain yourself.

You let out a deep breath that you hardly even realized that you'd been holding, and are just a little amused to hear your friend doing the same next to you, "Thank you, Koma. I promise, I promise I won't hold you up!" She mutters, leading you to shake your head with a snort.

"I didn't say yes, either, Kohana." You remind her quietly, offering her a protective glare, "Did you even think about what they might do if I don't sponsor you? You're breaking the sacred tradition."

The other warrior's face seems to pale somewhat at that reminder, and she falls silent for a few moments as Apenimon picks up from where she left off, warning you of the dangers you may face during the journey, and speaking fondly of the honor and prestige you will earn by returning with a tribute to strengthen the Confederacy.

You do your best to pay attention to the Keeper as she speaks, but your mind continuously wanders back towards what you might be able to do for your friend while Apenimon starts to finish up, "Very well then. I will begin calling each of you up one by one to discuss your journeys. If there are any among you that wish to travel together, Elder Adan will be available to discuss logistics and the expectations that traveling as a group brings. Ana Leote, please follow me to my hut, the rest of you will wait here until you are summoned."

Kohana sits quietly until Apenimon leaves, before turning to you with a certain amount of nervous curiosity, "Do...do you really care much about all that tradition stuff? I mean, I know it's important, but if I stick too close to it then I'll never leave."

"Don't you think you should have asked me something like that -before- springing sponsorship on me?" You reply in the most serious voice you can muster, even as a small grin tugs at the corner of your mouth.

"Maybe, but...well, I didn't really think it through, okay? I just...I know I can pass my trials, Koma, you know it too. And so does everybody else! The only reason my family refuses to sponsor me is because they're afraid of what might happen if I don't come back from the Pitchi!"

Your amusement dies down a little at her admission and you sigh, unable to deny that your friend is at least partially correct, though you're still not sure if you agree with her disregard for your people's traditions. They're part of what's carried your entire civilization for as long as anybody can remember, and they helped to strengthen all of the Abnaki after the invasion of the eastern lands by the so-called Valanians. On the other hand, if there's one thing that has been made clear by your people's recent commitment to technological progress, it's that tradition can often stifle the emergence of new, and often better ideas, and you're certain that if your nation had shunned the industrialization of their land in order to keep with tradition, you would not be here now.

So, you wonder, how do you really feel about keeping with the strict law of tradition?
>We have traditions for a reason, and they are just as important as our laws. Without them, we'd be no better than the Valanians.
>Traditions are important, but taking them at face value without considering them could be a mistake. Sometimes the rules need to be bent in order for the right decision to be made.
>You have no real use for the law of tradition, and more often than not it tends to strangle good ideas rather foster the growth that you and your people need.

"I guess that I can understand your point, Kohana, and I'm not mad at you, but you really should have thought this through a little better. Or at least asked me about it first." You tell the older girl, "Still, you're right. The traditions are part of what has kept us strong for all these years, but we're never going to get anywhere if we don't bend a few rules here and there."

"Hah, I knew you'd see it fro-" She laughs, only to be interrupted as one of Apenimon's apprentices steps through the doorway of the longhouse and searches you out of the crowd.

"Nakoma Igasho, the Keeper will see you now. She wishes to see you as well, Kohana..." The apprentice's gaze lingers on your friend for a few moments longer than either of you are comfortable with before you both push yourselves off the floor and let him lead you outside and across the town center into a much more modern building. "She isn't happy with you, Kohana. But I think she might be a little bit impressed at your nerve." The larger man mutters, staring at your friend before turning his gaze back on you, "As for you, Igasho, people are expecting a lot from you. I hope that you can live up to their image of you."

A tight frown spreads across your lips at his words, and you briefly consider snapping back at him, only to think better of it as he opens the door to the Keeper's office and ushers you in, "Ah, children, it's good to see you. You may leave us, Hakima."

The apprentice silently complies, leaving the two of you standing in front of the Keeper, almost as if you were children readying yourselves to be chastised, "We have much to speak about and little time for it. We will, of course, have to address your trials, Kohana, but first we must award Nakoma his gifts. It is not every day that one departs on their journey toward adulthood, after all.

You blink in surprise, not having expected Apenimon to be nearly as calm as she appears after her display in the longhouse, "Gifts?" You ask curiously, glancing around her office and seeing nothing worth calling a present.

"Of course, my child!" She laughs softly, standing from behind her desk and directing your gaze towards a curtain that has always been closed on your previous visits, "Escenoia is a dangerous is a dangerous world, it would be foolhardy to allow you to venture into it without some sort of protection. That is why each Tribute is awarded their choice of three items from our armory before they leave, to keep with them for the rest of their days. After all, we are asking much of you, it would be unfair for you to go unrewarded for such dedication."

You nod in understanding as she leads you closer towards the corner of the room with what is clearly just a small selection from the city's armory. Despite the small quantity, you're somewhat shocked at the impressive quality of the gear being offered to you, especially as you notice the softly glowing runes etched into several of the pieces. "I can have any of these?"
>>
>>2069250
>is a dangerous is a dangerous
>>
>>2069250
Apenimon nods patiently, "Any three, Nakmoa. Once you have made your choice, however, you cannot trade them out. Personally, I would suggest staying away from the explosives, if I were you. I have seen far too many young warriors blow themselves up, however the choice is yours.

You wince at the thought of the blatantly inglorious death of blowing yourself up before turning your attention back to the matter at hand. Naturally the first thing that your eyes lock onto are the two satchel charges pushed off into the corner, but they almost immediately drift to the bolt-action rifle resting against the wall next to them, surrounded by a few boxes of ammunition and three magazines. Hanging on the wall above the rifle you see a well-crafted bow, clearly more modern than the traditional bows that you're used to hunting with, alongside a quiver practically stuffed with arrows.

The next gift you notice is a beautiful sapphire pendant, etched with ruins and pulsing with power, "What kind of magic is in the pendent?" You ask the older woman curiously, drawing a beaming smile from her wrinkled face.

"Ah, that pendant is a work of art, I crafted it myself! It has restorative powers, and will ward you from spiritual possession as long as you keep it on you. Though I should warn you, that the simple act of warding against spirits may attract them to you, they are a curious bunch, after all."

"Thank you, Keeper." You reply, your curiosity sated, before stealing one last look at the stone and moving on to the revolver sitting next to it on the display case, its amethyst runes shining dimly, "What about the gun?"

"The revolver, you mean?" You nod at the question and she hums, "It is enchanted to work against the minions of darkness, child. I can't promise that it will work against all of the world's evils, but I'm certain that it will prove useful against the undying."

You frown at her answer, not entirely sure what to make of it, before turning back to the display and looking down at the last item in front of you. It looks to just be some kind of bag, but as you reach forward and open it up you realize that it's actually a potions kit. It looks like a handful of house hold blood replenishing and antidote potions, things that you know how to make but have little -real- skill in, along with a single potion that you don't recognize. "What about this potion?" You ask, tapping on the singular bone vial.

"It will help to clear your mind and increase your reflexes, but only for a short amount of time before it wears off. Many warriors have used potions like these in the past, but you should know that just as many have found them to be addictive if overused."

Your nose wrinkles in distaste at the thought of a potion addiction, though you can't deny the potential usefulness of the substance's stated effects. With a sigh, you take a short step back and cross your arms over your chest pensively.

>>2069336
You're pretty certain that all of these items could be useful to you, admittedly some more than others, but you'll only be allowed to take three. You -might- be able to convince the Keeper to bend the rules a bit, given your good standing with her, but it seems doubtful that she would budge on her stance.

Try and convince Apenimon to allow you an extra gift? Regardless of your choice, roll 3d10.
>Yes.
>No.

Also, choose three gifts from the display.
>The bolt action rifle. The uses for a modern rifle are as obvious as they are numerous. It may not be the best suited for close combat, but otherwise it is a fine weapon.
>The satchel charges. It would be wise to heed your Keeper's warnings about explosives, however sometimes the liberal application of dynamite can be just what you need to solve a problem.
>The enchanted pendant. As beautiful as it is, you're more interested in the fact that it's supposed to offer at least some protection from malevolent spirits, and the restorative properties would be nice too. The idea of attracting spiritual attention is somewhat worrying, though.
>The enchanted revolver. You may not be able to hit much at longer ranges with it, but you'd be able to use it much more effectively in enclosed spaces, not to mention the benefits of having an advantage against the undead.
>The compound bow. It might not be as flashy or powerful as a rifle, but it can be just as deadly and has the advantage of being quiet.
>The potions kit. It would be useful to have some kind of medical kit with you in case you end up wounded, and this way you won't have to go scrounging around for the ingredients...for now at least.

You consider your choices carefully for several moments before uncrossing your arms and stepping forward, only to glance back at the Keeper as you start to reach out for the bow, drawing a soft chuckle from the ancient woman, "Go ahead, child, I know the impression that I give off in the longhouse can be intimidating, but I already told you that these are your gifts, feel free to take them."

"Thank you, Keeper." You reply somewhat sheepishly, feeling your face heat somewhat at her amusement, before gently taking the quiver and bow from the wall and slinging them across your chest.

"An interesting choice...many of our people have discarded our old weapons, however you seem to understand some of the value of such tools." Apenimon murmurs from behind you, clearly interested in your choices, "And the pendant as well, I see. A wise decision, our enchantments have always been stronger than the Valanian's trinkets, it would be foolish to ignore this advantage. Though I should warn you again, about the attention such artifacts can attract."

A soft frown tugs at your lips at the mention of the colonial nations, and you glance down at the pendant in your hand before looping it around your neck and reach down to stuff the boxes of ammunition and magazines into the backpack sitting next to them. Once you've finished you push yourself back to your feet and grab the rifle in the corner, briefly testing its weight and checking to see if it's loaded before turning back towards the village elder. "And, of course, your rifle. Useful as the old weapons may be, trying to fight any of our enemies without a gun would be a fools errand. With that you should be able to protect yourself against most threats you will face on your Pitchi."

The proud smile that has spread across Apenimon's face is infectious, and as you step away from the display case you find yourself filling with excitement for your coming adventure, all over again. "Thank you so much for these gifts, Keeper." You reply, bowing your head thankfully, only to glance up as she swats you and steps forward to pull you into a hug.

"Think nothing of them, child. They are from all of us, and when you return to us, you will have more than repaid our people, I'm sure of it." She replies gently, before sighing as she steps away and turns her attention back towards Kohana. "As for you, child, what do you have to say for yourself?"

The mood of the room tenses noticeably as the subject returns to your friend's deception, "I just...I am sorry, Keeper. I know that I shouldn't have lied to you, but...it's just...it's not fair! Everybody in Waynoka knows that I should have passed my trials by now, the only reason I haven't is because my mother refuses to sponsor me or allow my father to do so. She's so wrapped up in my futu-"

"Enough, Kohana, I understand now. I was afraid that this might happen if you were kept from undertaking your trials, but it would appear that your mother thinks herself wiser than me."
>>
A heavy silence lingers for a few moments at the Keeper's words, before she simply shakes her head, "You must know that if you do not take your trials now, you will be punished. Given the circumstances, I will be lenient, but the law must be upheld, and any Tribute that attempts to depart on their Pitchi without completing their trials are to retake each of their trials before the next year, or be banished from participating."

Your heart sinks somewhat at that revelation, and from the look on Kohana's face it's clear that she's absolutely mortified by the idea, "B-but, it took me twenty years to complete all of my trials! How can I complete them all in one year?! What if my mother-"

"Calm yourself, child, I will speak with your mother. Rest assured that she will not interfere with your training, and should you succeed then I will personally sponsor your Askari trials prior to the equinox next year." Apenimon tells her soothingly, "I have no doubt that you will be able to meet this challenge if you push yourself hard enough. Though, let us not get ahead of ourselves. We still have no idea if Nakoma has decided to sponsor you himself yet, have we?"

You swallow heavily as both of their gazes turn to you expectantly, one curious while the other holds a pleading desperation, "Please, Koma? I know that you've got a lot to take care of right now, and I promise I won't be mad if you can't do it, but if you don't, then...well, you had better come back with some good stories, at least."

There's a small pang in your heart at seeing your best friend, normally strong and independent, begging you to sponsor her trials. There's a big part of you that wants to help her, but you're also aware just how much work goes into accompanying a Tribute on their trials, if you help her now then you're sure to miss whatever festivities are being put on today, though to be fair they'll still be going on tomorrow...once you're gone. On the other hand, if you don't help her then you'll certainly be dooming her to a year of intense work and misery...that might be a good building experience for her in the long run, but you're not as certain as the Keeper in her passing all of the trials in just one year.

Ultimately the decision on whether she'll get to depart on her Pitchi or stay to work towards it next year is up to you. What do you want to do?
>Alright, you'll help her. She's earned the right to take her trials, and she deserves to go on her journey.

You let out a soft hum as you consider your options before nodding shortly, "Alright, Koh, I'll sponsor you."

Kohana squeals excitedly, rushing forward to pull you into a tight hug, "Thank you! Thank you so much, Koma! I promise I won't take too long!"

You roll your eyes at her overzealous gratitude, though you have trouble hiding an affectionate smile from her as she pulls back and looks from you to Apenimon, "I'll go and get my weapons, I'll be right back!"

"No, just meet me at my house and we'll head out from there." You tell her, receiving an excited nod and little else in return before your friend bolts from the Keeper's chambers.

"It was kind of you to sponsor your friend, Nakoma."

You blink in surprise at the Keeper's words, looking back to see her offering a soft smile, though it slowly falls into a tired frown, "You are a dedicated Tribute, so I am sure that this is not necessary, but I should remind you that Kohana -must- pass her trials by her own power. You may assist her in reaching them, but should you help her, or allow her to pass without her earning it, the consequences could be quite dire for the both of you."

Your eyes narrow somewhat at her warning, wary of the concern in her voice, but you nod in understanding, "Of course, Keeper, this is her trial, after all, not mine."

The elder's smile warms somewhat at your answer, though the concern doesn't leave her eyes, "I knew you would understand, child. You should know, however, that the gods' trials do not end just because you depart on your Pitchi. For many they are never ending, and it would serve you well to remember this. After all, your mother was a pillar of strength for our people, your sister has proven to be just as strong, and I would expect nothing else of her son."

You swallow thickly at the mention of your mother, unable to immediately process the responsibility she's putting on you. You've known your entire life that people expected great things of you, largely due to the fact that they made no secret of it. On a certain level, that kind of responsibility appealed to you, because you knew from your mother's tales that for as much as her people relied on her, she also had the freedom to go anywhere, do anything. But no matter how free she may have been, she always had to come back here, and you often wonder if she might have wanted to leave and simply explore the world forever.

After a few moments of silence, you notice Apenimon eyeing you questioningly, apparently expecting an answer to her 'encouragement'. You're not sure whether you should tell her what you really think or not...though truthfully you're not entirely sure what you think about it either.

How do you feel about what the Keeper said?
>You're a little intimidated by the pressure being put on you, but you're excited for the prospect of adventure and the chance to help your people.
>You were practically born for this. You've been training your entire life up to this point, not just for the thrill of exploration but because you want to be a shining beacon for your people some day.

Your chest briefly swells with determination as you consider the Keeper's words, proud to be compared to your mother, though another idea bursts forth in your mind as you nod to Apenimon, "Thank you, Keeper, I wpromise that I will not disappoint you." You start, drawing an encouraging smile from the old woman, though she blinks in surprise as you continue, "But I want you to know, and tell the other Elders, that as proud as I am of my heritage, I am not my mother and I have no intentions of trying to be her. Her legacy is her own, and whether I achieve greatness or not, it will be by my own actions."

Apenimon appraises you with a calculating gaze as you finish, it's clear that you've left an impression on her, but as she recovers and offers you an amused smile you're not sure what exactly it was. "If that is the path you wish to walk then it will be a difficult one, child. But, as you wish, I will pass along your message. I look forward to seeing what you may do with your own legacy, so travel safely, Nakoma."

You're somewhat surprised by the Keeper's support, however faint it may be, and unsure what else to say simply nod as she dismisses you. "Thank you again, Keeper, I will keep your counsel in mind."

The village elder smiles softly in reply though says nothing else as you leave her chambers and step out into the center. It takes a few moments for your eyes to readjust to the glare of the morning sun, though that hardly slows your trek back home to meet up with Kohana, who you see practically vibrating outside your home. "You could have gone in, you know. It's not as if Alo would have been upset by you waiting for me." You tell her with amusement.

"No, it's locked. She's probably out working on her cannon or something." Your friend replies quickly, rolling her eyes as you quirk an eyebrow at her and interrupting you before you can even get the first word out, "No time for jokes, Koma! I've gotta do this before the day ends or we're both wasting time!"

You blink at the normally upbeat girl's abruptness before shrugging in response, reasoning that she's not wrong. "Alright, let's get going then. I'm sure that you've got at least idea of where the temple is, but follow me until we get there, 'kay, Koh?"

She nods excitedly, falling into step next to you as you turn and start to lead her through Waynoka, passing the various tents and stands as they're being set up for the equinox festivities. "Thank you again, Koma...I really appreciate your help." She starts, pausing as you wave it off.

"Koh, I appreciate the gratitude, but don't worry about it. Friends take care of each other, no matter what." You reply, reaching into one of the pouches on your belt and producing a tin of facepaint as the two of you begin reaching the edge of the town.

Kohana simply beams in response, watching you trace the Igosho tribe warpaint across your face before letting out a soft hum, "Sooo, is there anyth-"

"Nope." You interrupt, snapping the tin of paint closed and wiping your fingers on the rag it was wrapped in before putting the set back in its pouch, "It's your trial, Koh, not mine, and anyways I never got a..." Your words trail off as you notice something off to the side of the trail, it looks to be some kind of tattered pack with tracks leading away from it, though from your current distance it's difficult to tell what they might be.

This isn't normal for the forest surrounding your town, bandit and goblin raids occasionally try to attack caravans, but they never leave much of anything behind. You're tempted to investigate the situation, but at the same time you're well aware that you're on a time limit, and not only do you want to help your friend, you'd be awfully annoyed if you ended up wasting time that you could have spent preparing.

What do you want to do? Regardless of your choice, roll 3d10

You do have a tomahawk, and you'all be able to learn how to use magic but it should be noted that 'traditional' magic is outdated, and the most effective forms are enchantment and ritualistic magic. So if you come up against enemies with modern weapons you'I'll be pretty easily outclassed if you're using that.

You glance up and down the trail cautiously before taking a step towards the pack, catching the glint of fresh blood soaking into it, before kneeling down next to it and grimacing at the equally battered body underneath it. "Well I don't know him..." You mutter over your shoulder, "Do you recognize him at all?"

The ground around the body catches your attention for a moment as you notice a series of tracks and smears of a murky purple liquid leading away towards a deeper part of the forest. "-cial from Senaki."

The sudden words snap your concentration and you glance over your shoulder, realizing that you just missed your friend's answer after the long silence, "I got distracted, could you run that by me again?"

Kohana's eyes flash with frustration before she nods with a sigh, "I've seen him a couple of times, but I've never spoken with him. He's some kind of official from Senaki, like a runner for one of the council members."

"What's someone like him doing out here?"

Your friend shrugs uncertainly, "Who knows? Maybe he was collecting the list of Tributes going on their Pitchi? We do raise a lot of Askari for a town our size, that might be important to the census."

Your mouth quirks into a frown at that information, and you take a second look at the man and the pack attached to him. You do notice that his sash is missing, something that you can't imagine any proud Onetaima allowing to happen. Actually, just about anything that could possibly be of value has been taken from him, aside from his clothes and a thickly bound collection of sealed papers.

"Well, somebody's going to be pretty unhappy about all of this. His attackers didn't leave much to work off of. But they definitely went that way." You point out the trail to your friend, who eyes it warily for several moments before glancing back to you.

"Are you wanting to follow them? Shouldn't we get to the temple, though? For all we know whoever attacked him are long gone, or they're all dead. The forest is a dangerous place."

Well...she's not wrong, the forest is a very dangerous place for people who aren't properly prepared for it. You both have some weapons, and you've practically lived in it your entirely life, but overconfidence has been the death of plenty of warriors before you. On the other hand, you're somewhat compelled to track this man's killers down and make sure they see justice, not necessarily for revenge but simply due to the fact that they are uncomfortably close to the town's walls. As you consider the question, your eyes roll back over the binder of documents in the runner's pack and feel an intense curiosity well up within you. Chances are that it's a bunch of boring administrative papers, but you're sure that there would be somebody that is very interested in getting their hands on them. That said, if this guy already died carrying them, then it may be best to just leave them be...just in case.

A deep sigh escapes your lips as you shake your head, "If we don't track them down now then it's going to happen again. Part of being an Askari is protecting the people...if it helps, think about how you would feel if this man was your father." You say, grabbing the binder from the body and carefully sliding into your own pack as your friend frowns at you.

"Alright...if you're sure then let's do it." Kohana replies reluctantly, drawing a revolver from her waist to check the cylinder while you push yourself up and move towards the trail, searching out traces of it as you go.

"Don't worry, Koh, we're not too far from the temple now and this shouldn't take too long, we should be able to go straight there when we're done." You assure her quietly before falling silent as you notice that the splotches of purple seem to be getting heavier, and before long you notice a small greyish green figure slumped against a tree in the distance.

"Is that..." Koh glances at you curiously, watching your reaction as you cast your gaze around the surrounding trees before nodding.

"Looks like a goblin, probably one of the ones that attacked the runner. Seems pretty small, though, maybe it's just a wandering tribe?"

Your friend simply shrugs at your suggestion, as if to defer to you, "Should we check it or just keep moving? Maybe they have something on them still?"

It's possible, though it seems unlikely that goblins would leave anything of value left on their dead if they were a raiding party. Even if they did take anything though, taking a look could be useful for identifying the tribe, assuming they're not just nomads, the Keeper would need to know if one of the surrounding tribes had broken their peace. In the time that you spend identifying the goblin, though, you could probably cover a decent amount of ground and there are three more of them out there somewhere.

What do you want to do? Regardless, roll 3d10.

"Let's keep moving, we're still on a time limit." You decide, pushing forward to follow the remaining tracks without giving the goblin another glance. You've only been following the trail for a few minutes when you hear a guttural voice muttering in broken Onetan, "She was a runt anyway, dunno why ya want her hea- HUNTERS! Kill, kill them!"

Your eyes go wide as the voice rings out in the surrounding forest shortly before an arrow soars past your ear and embeds itself into the tree next to you, forcing you to reflexively crouch down as two goblins crash through the vegetation towards you brandishing a spear and a crudely fashioned machete. "Koma, are-"

The goblin with the spear manages to reach you first and you dodge their first thrust with only a graze across your arm, "I want your pretties, give them to me!" She snarls, making your nose curl at her rancid breath before you push her away and move behind the tree for cover.

"I'm fine, concentrate on them!" You reply to your friend's unfinished question before taking your own advice and turning your attention back to the battle. It looks like the goblin that tried to skewer you has recovered and is starting to move towards you again, while the one carrying the machete is focused solely on Kohana. You briefly wonder where the third one went, but another arrow sinking into your tree's trunk assures you that they're still out there somewhere.

It looks like you're in a bit of a spot, though you're confident that if you play your cards right it could end quickly enough. Your immediate thought is to shoot one of the goblins with your rifle, though if they start moving around in the forest it might prove to be a more difficult task. Of course you could use your bow, it's not quite as effective as your rifle but if there are any more goblins poking around here then at least they wouldn't know you're here...assuming they didn't hear the shouts. Alternatively, you could just bring it in close and personal with your tomahawk, there's more risk involved that way, but it might be easier to fight in close quarters here than at a distance, and you're positive that you could overpower the goblins.

Your hand flies to your tomahawk and snatches it from your sash as you barrel forward with a shout at the goblin attacking your friend. A look of absolute terror flashes across the raider's face as he starts to raise his machete towards you, only for your weapon to sink into his shoulder, eliciting a shrieking cry from his mouth while viscous purple blood sprays from the wound.

You grit your teeth as you tear your axe from the goblin's shoulder and the foul blood splatters across your face and chest, though you don't stop to consider that fact before kicking the dying enemy to the ground and hurling your tomahawk at his head, silencing his screams as it embeds itself there. Another arrow streaks past you, slicing a shallow cut into your cheek as it just barely misses your head. "Koha-" You start, alarmed that you haven't heard anything else from her since the fight started, though before you can finish your thought the goblin with the spear is bearing down on you again.

A moment of panic rushes through you as you realize that your weapon is still buried in the other goblin's skull, while your others are still slung across your back. You start to desperately reach for your rifle as the smaller enemy charges you, already certain that you'll be too late, but before the enraged spearwoman can get any closer to you a shot rings out from behind you and the goblin flies backwards with a squeal, dropping her spear as she falls.

You take just one moment to glance over your shoulder and grin with let out a relieved laugh as you see your friend gripping her revolver tightly, seemingly trying to keep it steady as she takes deep breaths. "You're doing great, Koh, just be careful!" You shout to her before turning your attention back to the fight and note with some astonishment that the spear goblin is actually, however weakly, pushing herself back up to her feet while the arrows seem to have paused for the moment.

You consider the situation for a few moments, realizing that if the other goblin has stopped firing arrows for this long they've probably already ran away. With that in mind you quickly unsling your bow and take off in the direction that the arrows had been coming from, "Take care of her, Koh, I'm going to make sure that the other one doesn't get away!"

Your friend shakily nods her head and starts moving towards the goblin she shot earlier as you disappear into the trees, and a few moments later you hear a second shot ring out in the forest. Thankfully it doesn't take you long to find the last goblin's trail, it had taken off in such a panic that it hadn't even tried to hide its tracks, though as you follow along a suspicious feeling wells up inside you, it seems like you're heading closer and closer to the temple as you go.

Before you can examine that thought any further you spot the fleeing bowman and quickly notch an arrow as you slow your pursuit to a crawl before taking aim and letting loose. Your arrow soars through the air and strikes true as it digs into your target's thigh, tearing a terrified scream from his lips as he collapses onto the ground, desperately trying to drag himself into cover. You spot your opportunity now, you could fire off another arrow now and end this for sure. It would be the safest bet, but you also wonder whether it would be worth while to try and question the monster...after all if you kill him now then any useful information he might would be gone. Of course, you're somewhat skeptical that the goblin would be particularly inclined to tell you anything, given the circumstances.

What should you do?

You ignore the goblin's shouts as it desperately tries to crawl away and fire off another arrow and smile with grim satisfaction as it embeds itself firmly beneath the creature's head cutting of its head, cutting off his screams as he falls limply to the forest floor. "Serves you right, murder." You mutter to his corpse as you stride forward and kneel over it.

Your nose wrinkles at the goblin's stench as you work out your arrows, taking stock of what little it has on it as you do so. It seems like this one might have been the leader, judging by the shrunken heads tied around his waist and the bundle of bright and shining items that were likely looted from the runner. Right away your eyes catch on the other Onetaiman's vibrant sash, decorated with medals and coins denoting his status, not many of them are familiar to you, though the crest of Senaki is impossible to miss. Additionally you find a small bundle of paper money stuffed into one of the goblin's pockets while a broken pipe is stuffed into his waistband.

You've just finished wrenching the second arrow from the corpse when the sounds of soft footsteps reach your ears and you whirl around to find Kohana approaching you, her revolver lowered to her side as she watches you carefully. "A-are you alright?"

You nod shortly at her question and return your arrows to their quiver, "I'm fine, what about you?"

The older girl releases a shuddering breath while a shaky smile crosses her face, "Good, I'm just...that was the first time I shot somebody. I mean, we've hunted before, but this feels...different. I-I'm fine though! Just...shaken is all." She explains, pausing for a moment before blinking in realization and straightening up somewhat as she pulls your tomahawk from her belt, "Ah! You forgot this, by the way. Wouldn't want you to lose this..."

You suck in a quick breath and quickly push yourself up and accept your weapon, offering her a grateful smile as you wipe the congealing fluid off on the goblin's pants. "Thanks, Koh, I can't believe I left her back there like that."

Your friend simply smirks, seeming to have calmed down some now that the two of you are both out of danger, "It's okay, just don't make a habit of it or else you'll lose it for good. After all, I can't be following you around everywhere making sure that you aren't aren't dropping precious heirlooms all the time." She teases, before blinking as she catches sight of the loot you've retrieved from the raider, "Oh! You found his sash then...at least his family will have that."

You nod solemnly and slip your pack off to store the fallen runner's items in it before hoisting it back up and sighing, "Well, that's done at least. Let's get your trial over so we can go back and celebrate."

Kohana perks up and falls quickly into step behind you, "Gladly, the quicker we get this done, the sooner I'll be able to start packing."

You roll your eyes at her enthusiasm, thinking back on your own trial and the frustrations that you felt as you took them, "You might not be quite so eager once we get there, Koh." You quip back with a soft laugh, only to fall silent as you approach the temple's clearing and see the great stone door that had always sealed it when trials weren't in progress broken down and scattered across the clearing while several heavy sets of tracks surround the ruined temple's entrance.

"What...this doesn't look right." Koh murmurs next to you, eyeing the broken door with nervousness, "Do you think it was the goblins?"

You shake your head uncertainly, "Maybe...but what goblin could break down a door that size?" You point out, before indicating the tracks by the entrance, "Those -are- goblin tracks, but...it looks like they set up a guard, if they're not here then I don't know what happened."

"Maybe they heard us?"

A frown tugs at your lip at the thought, it seems likely that that's probably the case, though you're somewhat concerned at what could possibly be waiting for you in there if they were smart enough to set up a guard and, presumably, a patrol. "There's probably a lot more of them inside...I don't think that your trials are going to go the way we planned them to." You tell her, drawing a conflicted look from her.

"But...this is the last chance, if-"

"If there are a lot of goblins in there then it could be a trap for us." You interrupt, reaching a hand out to rest on her shoulder, "You haven't actually started your trials yet so you can't fail them. If you want to leave then you could...who knows that they're getting up to in there, though? This is a sacred place, if they're there too long then this could be really bad."

Your friend's face twists in a conflicted emotion, before settling into a determined scowl, "Let's do it, Koma. We came here for my trials, maybe this isn't what we had in mind, but purging them would probably count, right?"

You blink in surprise at Kohana's spirit, not having expected to jump on the idea so quickly, though you can't deny that she's probably right. While the Askari trials have little to do with killing goblins, cleansing a sacred ruin would likely qualify as her passing, depending on how well she did...and assuming that the two of you even survived. That said, just running into this tomb with as little information as you have may not be the greatest idea...not that it would be much better if you went and let the Keeper know. By that time the goblins could have desecrated the ruin, or at least put up better defenses, not to mention that Koh would have to wait out her year and you would have just wasted your time.

What should you do?
>Head back and report this to the Keeper. Who knows what the goblins have got in there? This is a bigger job than you can handle on your own.
>Try to clear the tomb, this is a sacred place and while you may not have departed on your Pitchi yet, you're still going to be an Askari, which means this is your job.
>Go in and clear the tomb, but send Koh back. It may leave you without somebody to watch your back and it will force her to wait, but at least she'll be safe. [Roll 3d10]
>Examine the clearing to try and learn any more about what you're up against.
>Write-in.

Forgot again, but roll 3d10 if you want to examine the clearing as well. Also, I'm gonna head to bed for the night. With luck I'll have time to update before work, if not then I'll have it out once I get back.
