Quietly you and Stack stalked through the shipping lanes as you made your way to the upper decks. Through the night, you had traveled clandestinely aboard a supply ship and made it aboard Zhou Enlai School of Business. As expected, even from the lower decks, everything seemed rather calculated, planned, cold even. Lafayette Girls Academy was one of the oldest ships serving in the Academyship fleet, it had its quirks, there were holes where there shouldn’t be, rooms that only existed on paper and rooms that existed regardless of what was said on paper. And for the most part, it was something to be proud of. Sure, LGA was not the best ship. But it was your ship.

ZES was different. It was a modern Academyship. It was first launched in 2005. There were no quirks in its design, no bugs, no glitches, no standout flaws, nothing. It was designed to be absolutely perfect as possible. Not only was this evident in the construction, where it seemed there were no seams in the metal walls or any darkness in the hallways. The Naval Studies students of ZES were also disciplined, regimented. You could see Officers communicating to them in precise Mandarin. They carried out their duties wordlessly without pause. Their uniforms were light blue minidresses with sailor collars and white ribbons. Each one had their hair cut to just above their shoulders. And each one wore jackboots which clicked and clacked on their marches. It was…

Dear God, you were jealous. How can LGA not have something like this!?

Stack nudges you as you move along the stairs up to the upper deck. “Focus.” You look past Stack and see an Officer command a column of students. They turn left face swiftly, then stomp their boots in response. The Officer quickly goes down the list on her clipboard. No talking back, no- no HOW!? WHY!?

Stack nudges you again. “Ellie,” she whispers. “Eyes straight. They’re going to realize something is up.”

You force your head forwards. You’d love to have that kind of regimentation at LGA but right now, it’ll only be theory and politics. You’ll have to talk to the Captain later after the tournament about it maybe. For now though, you and Stack keep walking and walking. Finally however, you make it above decks.

Just like the lower decks, the upper decks are just as calculated and planned out to perfection. Straight straights, no curves, no weird angles. It’s almost as if they took an entire city block and plopped it onto an Academyship. Students wearing the Zhou Enlai uniform walk around, busy themselves in books as they wait for the bus, or converse quietly amongst each other. Stack points out an incredibly large building however in the center of the Academyship. It looks almost eight stories tall, and appears almost more like a massive fortress of an office building than a school. “That is where we’re going,” she whispers. “You have your fake ID?”

“Yeah, do you?” you ask. Stack nods.

“Alright. Play it…” Stack snaps her fingers, smirking. “Cool.” She then starts walking along as if she came right out of Steamboat Willie. This immediately draws the attention of several students.

Well. Stack at least has the theory down if not the practice.

You walk behind her, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. Stay calm. Deep br- wait, no deep breathes. Straps still holding tits down! Ow! Okay. Just stay calm and alert.

A trio of students suddenly slide out of the alley in front of Stack. What the fuck!? They stare her down, wearing peaked caps and white armbands. Stack stops, and you almost collide into her. Oh boy. They glare at you two. They first attempt to speak to you in Mandarin. A hello? A command? Silence. Then the one in the middle says, “Identification. –Please. –” The two of you quickly produce your ID cards. She takes them and looks at them. “All students must have identification cards visible. Either on belt or on breast pocket or on lanyard around neck. Understood?”

Stack nods. “Y-… Yeah.”

“I do not believe I recognize you two,” she says. She scrunches her nose, returning your IDs. “Are you yet more foreigners come to embarrass us? You could at least learn to speak Mandarin before you arrive on this ship.”

You bow to them. “Forgive us.” You look to Stack, who’s looking confusedly at you. You grab her head and force her to bow. “We did not know.”

The center girl snorts. “You are a long way from home. And we do not tolerate any form of mistakes or weakness. Understood?”

“Yes, of course!” you both say.

The center continues. “All new transferees must be processed first, yes? Have you two been processed?” Processed? You and Stack look at each other. Okay. This is getting complicated. If you get processed, you’ll be found out immediately. “Right. We are going to take the both of you then and-“

“HEY!” The three girls look past you. You turn around.

The mercenaries. They storm up behind you all in one big group. Freya Word, Emilia Liscum, Julia Brunet, all of them and more you don’t recognize. They immediately gather around you two, staring down the three girls. “Now, Missy Miss, why are you bullying these two freshies? What’d they ever do to you?”

The center girl glares at Freya. “You know perfectly well the rules.”

“Ah shove it,” says one of them, Meridia Surena you recognize her. “They’re new, let ‘em walk!”

The three girls look at the mercenaries, they start walking around them. All of them glare down the three of them, smugly grinning and smirking. “This is not over. They will report to processing TONIGHT,” she states firmly. They start walking away.

Freya wraps her arm around you, smiling. “Don’t worry. You’re safe with us. What’s your name?” She offers her hand to shake.

“Er. My name is…” You take a quick peek at your ID Card. Elouise Dunlop!? Stack, what kind of name is this!? “… Elouise?”

Freya shakes your hand. “Elouise. You planning on joining the Tank Corps?”

“We are!” says Stack. She offers her hand. “My name’s Sam!” WHAT. “Nice to meet y’all! Me and my friend Elouise here was just plannin’ on moseying in and seeing what the Tank life is like here aboard the ship!”

“Oh? Really?” Emilia folds her arms, quirking her brow. “Usually Mei recruits her foreigners. You guys replacing some people?”

“Nooo,” says Stack innocently. “We transferred in. We’re volunteers.”

“Pfft, lame,” says Emilia. “You could’ve made some serious bank if you were halfway decent and looked good on a statsheet. But come on, let’s take you guys out to lunch. Mei wants us all to have a briefing today anyway.”

“Oh yeah!” Freya snaps her fingers, grinning. She pats your chest. You flinch a bit. “Perk of being part of Mei’s chosen is that we can skip class while all the Chinese girls can’t. She likes to brief us personally.” The group starts walking along, dragging the two of you along. Seems they haven’t noticed your appearance. “So where are you two from?”

Stack says, “Texas!” STACK. COME ON, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?

“Neat!” says Freya. “What about you, Elouise?”

“Er-…” You look down, twiddling your fingers. “N-… Nowhere in particular.”

“She’s shy,” says Stack.

“Clearly!” Freya giggle a bit, keeping her arm wrapped around you. “Tell you what, Elouis. You need not be afraid. You’re among peers. See the Chinese girls round here don’t like us foreigners too much. My advice, steer clear of them. Just stick with us, and you’ll be alright.”

“What kind of perks do you guys get?” you ask.

Freya starts counting them off on her hand as you two walk. “We get our own quarters. We get to skip school for Tankery business. Room service!” She snaps her fingers, grinning at that. “You ever have your lunch and dinner be catered by professional chefs? It’s great! Mei believes a well-fed team is a well-performing one.”

Emilia nudges Freya, snickering. “Don’t get too fat, you might not fit in the cupola.” The girls all giggle and laugh. “Plus, Mei lets us order parts and mods we want as long as they fit within her strategems and strategies and what not.”

“Does this come with a catch?” asks Stack.

“Yeah, we train a bit harder than the Chinese girls,” says Meridia. “But for the most part, it’s all in good fun. And we get paid too! So why not?”

“Yeah, bloody knuckles and sweat down your shirt tells you you’ve had a good day!” Freya declares. “Come on, let’s have some lunch and then we’ll head out!”

Meridia pokes you, making you flinch. “Judging by this one’s look. She wants to see the tanks first.”

“Eh!? N- I m-“ You look around at them.

You smile at them, nervously. “Um. Okay. Let’s go see the tanks then.” Freya punches your arm, dragging you onwards and upwards. Oh boy. This is somehow going well. The mercenaries despite your initial impressions of them seem rather nice. Too nice, way too nice in fact. They can’t even spot a spy in their midst. Especially one as recognizable as you! Not that you have a big ego or anything like that but come on!

Ah! Why is this WORKING!?

-

-

Centurion tanks, lots of Centurion tanks. You expected a secret weapon of some kind. One of those siege mortar tanks, the Karl-Great that JWC owns perhaps. Or maybe an E-100. Or maybe even that nuke proof Russian tank! But nope, lots of boring old medium tanks aside from the Centurions. Sherman Easy Eights for one thing, and older T-34s probably for training purposes. Those T-34s appear to be 1944 models in fact, 85mm gun and everything.

You all skipped lunch it seems and grabbed some Chinese takeout to eat on the go as Freya showed you around. “Yeah, tanks are nothing really special. Just lots of Centurion tanks. Mei bought them all up as soon as they came to market as I’m told. And she keeps them pretty well-maintained.”

“Nothing in the back that I should know about?” you ask, putting down some notes. They’re even letting you take notes! Stack as well writes too, smiling happily at you. Ugh, this is somehow working.

“Nah. The Centurions are what you get,” says Freya. “Mei doesn’t believe in secret weapons or super tanks like that. She prefers a team that can work together and fight individually if need-be. You know how that works, right?” You nod. Of course you do. “Anyway, all our Centurions are-“

“Hey!” You look over. Josie Stillwell. Mei Xiang’s XO. She walks up, clipboard in hand. “Freya. What are you lot doing showing these two around? The Hangar’s off limits to outsiders.”

“They wanted to see!” says Freya. “Can’t we indulge that?”

Josie glares at you two, then at Freya. “They could be SPIES.” Oooooh fuck. You and Stack freeze. She glares back at you two.

Freya looks to you two. “Are you guys spies?”

“… no?” Stack says.

Freya smiles at Josie. “See?” Josie looks at you, then squints a bit. Oh boy. Perp sweating. Act cool, act natural.

Josie steps up to you. “Do I know you from somewhere?”

“Elodie Zumwalt!” OH SHIT. Freya snaps her fingers again, pointing to you. “You really do! Except for the tits though.” … of course.

Josie tilts her head. “So what brings you here?”

“I er… wanted to see your games. Maybe even join your team! Same for my friend Sam here.” Stack waves happily, smiling to everybody. “We were just so inspired by your performance that we figured we could join up as well once we came aboard Zhou Enlai!”

“ZES doesn’t take foreign transfer lightly,” says Josie. “You either had to have some good grades or Mei probably forgot she recruited you two. She would’ve let me know if we had a bunch of FNGs coming.” Oh boy. You can feel the sweat pooling already. “Still. I guess you two are harmless. But I got my eye on you two.” She looks to Freya. “Freya, we got briefing in a couple of hours. Go get your teams ready.”

“Aw, it’s in a couple of hours though!” says Freya.

“Now!” Josie orders firmly. Freya grumbles, walking away. “You two are free to explore but don’t get too comfortable.” She points to the other tankers behind you, then motions for them to disperse. They immediately start walking away. Josie herself keeps her eye on you two, but starts walking back to what she was doing.

As Stack goes off to take some photos of the tanks, you decide to distract Josie. As she’s going over one of the Centurions, you step up next to her. “So. How long have you been with ZES?” Josie looks at you with a very healthy amount of skepticism and contempt. You frown a little.

“Two years,” says Josie. She goes back to her clipboard. “Mei and I go farther back then that. We were both students at the Shimada dojo growing up.” Oh? Interesting. “When she formulated the idea of buying all the best players, I just went with it.”

“Really?” You smile a little. “Interesting. So does she pay you too?”

“Nah. But she does cover my little brother’s treatments.” … oh. Josie looks to you, quirking her brow. “Why do you ask?”

“E-… Nothing,” you say. “I mean, it just seems a bit weird that a team would be bought rather than raised, right? That doesn’t seem to match the Shimada philosophy or ZES’s philosophies. If it has any that is.”

Josie sighs, placing the clipboard under her arm. She turns to you. “Listen, FNG. This is a school of –business-. This school couldn’t care less about Tankery, it only cares about money, economics, and stocks. They don’t care what we do, just as long as it makes the school money. You ever see ZES students in the stands when we play? No. Far as I’m concerned, if we make money killing people then ZES would still like it.” She seems to recognize something on your face, then she places her hands on her hips, frowning. “I don’t mean to come across as a jerk. But that’s how things are run here.”

“Really.”

“Really.” She shrugs. “The few Chinese girls that like Tankery here and want to do it? Well, they’re not good enough for first string anyway. Most of the girls you see on the team are people that Mei has personally scouted herself. And she’s very rarely wrong about them. I’m sure if she wanted it, she’d have Griselda, Iris, and Elodie locked up but obviously they’re not interested.”

“Sh-… She’s interested in Elodie?” you say.

Josie nods. “Was anyway. Mei was scouting Elodie out first couple of rounds. Saw potential but scrapped it when Iris wouldn’t go. Figured if Iris wouldn’t, then neither would Elodie.” Hm. Interesting. “Why do you care anyway?”

“Mmmm. Just interested. I mean, I am a big fan of Elodie Zumwalt. So, there’s that, hehe…” Josie stares at you. “Ehehe. Yeah.”

Josie says, “Well, big fan that you are, sorry that you won’t get to play with her. Elodie’s locked up by LGA. I imagine Mei would’ve covered Elodie’s education along with paying her six digits to hire her.” Six digits!? Your heart starts racing. Oh sweet God! “Of course, what Mei and Elodie have going on now though, that’ll definitely bury any chance of that.”

“What do you mean?” you ask.

“Mei’s got some notion that Elodie is…” Josie presses her lips together, thinking on it. “There’s something off about her. She won’t talk about it. But she’s been obsessing over the match with LGA tomorrow. She really wants to beat them. That’s why I need everyone in tiptop shape. If LGA beats Mei, not sure how she’ll take it. She can be a pretty sore loser.”

“I guess that’s what happens when you win a lot, you get blindsided by loss,” you say.

“Yeah, we’re about to see how LGA handles it,” Josie remarks. Oh. That’s good. “Anyway. If you’re joining us, FNG…” She offers her hand. “I suppose welcome to the team.” You nod, shaking her hand politely.

“Thanks,” you say. “I- I didn’t think you would-“

“Trust me, this is the friendliest you’ll see me at. From today on, I’ll kick your ass if you don’t perform well. Mei’s standards are high, but she’s fair. Mine are even higher. Before the brief in fact, I want to see you in one of these Centurions. I want to see how you and your friend over there perform. We’ll let you join the team, but based on how you perform lets us know if you’re good enough to start or you’ll be a grease monkey. Got it?”

“We gotta demonstrate our prowess to Josie and Mei,” you say. “They are going to find out about us!” you whisper. You look over to Josie, who has already put ear buds in her ears. Hopefully she’s listening to some loud music. “We are so fucked!”

“Relax!” Stack takes your hand, smiling at you. “All we need to do is… be unique. Not remind them of Elodie but make them learn of Sam and Elouise! Got it?” Um. Right. You suppose. “And furthermore. You’re not going to be a Commander. You’re going to be something else. I’ll be a driver. I’ll know how to drive. Do you know how to do anything else in a tank?”

“Look, just being incompetent at it means you’re safe.”

“I am not-“ You stomp your foot. “Alright. Look. If we do this. We’ll be in. And maybe we can even steal one of their Centurions.”

“That’s the dream anyway,” says Stack.

“Of course, of course…” You sigh, rubbing your chin. “Think we can do it, Stack?”

>>
>>2041759
If we want to steal a tank then the hard bit is going to be getting it off the ship. Taking it from under their noses is child's play.

The probable way that is going to happen is by boat. Airplane would take far too long and there aren't really any helos that powerful.

I SUPPOSE you could call Kuromorimine for their Zeps but I dunno if they'll help out. Maho would probably see the humor in it but Erika might be a little more ambivalent about the whole thing.
>>
>>2041796
If Centurion is impossible, i willing to settle with their other tanks. Even several Easy Eights and/or T-34/85 would help our team.
>>
>>2041815
The problem isn't really the size of the tank but the class of transport we use to escape with.

Basically tanks are too heavy for a quick escape by most methods. An aircraft would probably need to land first to get the tank set up properly and most tanks are too heavy for helos, Tankettes excepted. So it has to be a boat or a Zeppelin as far as 'fast' exits go. (A boat is self explanatory and a Zeppelin could have a set of hooks for quick attachment to the tank and away you go).

Also, don't expect to steal more than one tank.
>>
Didn't Yukari escape by boat, the first time she got caught spying?
>>
>>2041880
Never specified. The last thing we see is her hauling ass out of the meeting room.

Given Ooarai seems to have no aerial assets, she probably got off the same she got on, via a supply ship.
>>
>>2041933
She had disappeared for a few days when they went looking for her, and she climbed into her room while they waited.
>>
>>2041796
Maho's already graduated by now anyway. As for escaping we just have to drive into a shipping container just before it's closed up and loaded onto a supply ship, then contact our school and have them intercept and recover us from the vessel mid-transit.
>>
>>2042149
I don't think modern shipping containers are quite wide enough to fit a Centurion inside. Of course, GuP containers might be much larger.

Other than that, I'm presuming we have to move fast if we're going to steal one so merely 'misplacing' one isn't quite going to work.
>>
>>2042219
I imagine they're large enough to make a dramatic escape, that's the kind of logic GuP runs on.

“Alright, you two.” Josie has called you and Stack over to one of the Centurion tanks. “Here’s the deal. I don’t have the time or the patience to run you through the complete training. So what I’m going to do is ask that you simply give me a taste of your performance in the tank. You do well, you’ll be first string. You don’t do well, you’re going to be putting pins in tracks for the next few years until you prove you can do better. Got that?”

“Yes, ma’am!” you both shout.

“Good. Now behind is one of our Centurion tanks. It uses a 17 pounder gun and is built to be an all-rounder tank, the first successful universal tank. This tank has the technological advantage above most of the tanks you will face against other teams. It can penetrate almost anything you face at most combat ranges. It can maintain good speed. And it will reliably tank most damage as long as you know which guns you’re facing and how to angle your armor properly. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am!”

“Good.” She points to Stack. “Driver.” She points to you. “Gunner.”

You blink. You haven’t had to use the main gun on a tank in… in forever! “Er-, I-“

Josie immediately advances on you and stares you down. “GUNNER.”

“Please don’t hurt me,” you say.

Josie grunts, then slaps your arm. “Get in the tank.” With that, the two of you climb aboard. Josie herself goes up with you all. You open up the hatch and take the gunner’s seat. Stack seats herself in the driver’s position. And Josie takes up the Commander’s seat. Alright. You take a deep breath, taking in your surroundings. Right, this gunnery stuff can’t be too hard, can it? Winona does it! And besides, gunnery is just ballistic calculation and simple physics. Shouldn’t be too hard. “Take us out, Sam.”

The Centurion rolls out of the hangar and moves out towards the training ground.

This training ground is much smaller than you thought. It barely looks to be half a kilometer in length. How does this team train here!? It’s also surrounded on all sides by what look to be apartment complexes and offices too. “Right. You get three shots, FNG. Any shot goes into one of those buildings you’re out of here.”

“Wait, we don’t have the safeties?” you ask.

“We do, they’re the buildings all around the training ground,” she says. Oooohhh… “Now, you have three targets ahead of you. Get used to aiming the turret around, then tell me when you’re ready.”

“Got it.” You take the controls. Simple enough. You place your eye to the sights and look ahead. One target is 200 meters away, another 300, and the other 400. Hm. No wonder Mei likes to brawl. She has no room to practice long range slugging on this ship. “Right, whene- wait, hold on.”

“What?” You blink.

“Archery team.” What. You turn the sights over and see that yes indeed, a small group of girls has taken up positions on the field and is practicing archery on the 200 meter target. The 200 meter target which is clearly a wooden silhouette of a tank with a target painted on it. “Right, just ignore them.”

“Okay, so you want me to target the 300 and 400?” you ask.

“Yep, and- wait. Fuck. Rifle team.” What. What!? You hear some sharp cracks as another group of girls are taking potshots at the 400 target with target rifles. Oh come on! Josie sighs, then nudges you with her foot. “Just take three shots at the 300 and make it quick. The other clubs are gonna want the 300.”

Right… how to do this.

1. ZES does not have a full training field.
2. The other clubs will complain.
3. No requirements. Josie simply assumes you can do it because Radio Operation is often the extraneous job in a tank that's passed onto either a loader or a commander.

> Hit the targets as best as you can.

Alright. Just take a deep breath. Focus in on your target. It’s not even that far away. “On the way,” you say calmly. You fire. The gun booms, shocking all the clubs out of their activities. The shot glances against a high concrete wall, exploding harmlessly. Right, too high. Josie grabs a shell then rams it home into the breech. “On the way.” You fire another shot. This time, it lands just short. Alright… One more. She loads in a new one. “On the way.” The next shots. This time you catch a piece of the target, splitting the turret off.

“Hm.” Josie wipes her hands a bit, checking the camera feed on her iPad. “Not too bad. Your spread could use some work.”

“Good enough for first string?” you ask.

“Don’t get your hopes up,” says Josie. “I have to say though, is this your first time gunning?” You’re not sure how to answer, so you simply shrug. “Hm. You’ve got potential then.”

Stack calls out from the driver’s seat. “What about me?”

“You managed to get it out of the hangar, which is good. But-“ Josie receives a phone call on her cell phone. “Hello?” … “Oh. Mei. Yeah, I was just showing some FNGs around.” … “Yeah, I assumed they transferred on their own.” … “Alright. Got it.” Josie looks to you. “Right, I gotta head to briefing.”

“What about us?” you ask.

Josie says, “Just stay here. Briefing normally doesn’t take longer than an hour.”

“Can’t we go too?” asks Stack. Josie grumbles, rolling her eyes.

“It’s okay, we’ll stay here,” you say.

Josie nods. “Alrighty then.” Josie climbs up out of the hatch. Then she looks down to you all. “Park it where you found it, alright?” You nod to her. And with that, she jumps off and jogs away. Must be in a bit of a rush.

Stack immediately pokes her head out of the hatch, then looks to you. “So how are we going to steal this thing?”

“I don’t know, Stack,” you say. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea. What if they find out?”

“They’ll find out, it’s not if, it’s when! But how are we going to steal it is the question! Maybe we can call up Jeep Jockey and have him send us a C-5 Galaxy or something or a Zeppelin.” You squint at her. “Come on! Take advantage of your boyfriend!”

“He is not my boyfriend!” You thump your fists against the cupola. “Look! Even if we wanted to steal this tank! Our bigger concern is figuring out what they’re planning! We can steal this tank, we could steal five tanks, but it’s moot if we don’t figure out their battle plan!”

“Ugh. Planning, planning! That’s boring!” Stack huffs. “Okay, tell you what. Maybe we can find some cardboard or something and disguise this thing as a car or something.” Oh, just disguise a Centurion tank as a car. That’s a disguise that will work. Surely.

Right, while the briefing is going on, you decide it now best to go search Mei’s office. You’re not going to steal anything. You’re just going to find her battle plans if she has them written down anywhere. You skulk through the empty hallways of the hangar. You don’t hear anything from anybody so far. Maybe their briefing is in a separate building? You sure hope so.

You find her office at the end of the hallway, marked with English letters below Chinese lettering. MEI XIANG. Okay. It’s locked though, definitely. Stack however has a plan. She takes… out a lockpicking kit? “When did you learn to pick locks?”

“You’d be surprised what my sisters find to be womanly,” says Stack. She deftly picks the lock in just thirty seconds. You both step inside to find pretty much what you expected. A rather Spartan office with just a desk, a computer, and a few filing cabinets. Even a closet too. You motion for Stack to check through the filing cabinets. Then you hurry on over to the desk. You open up the desk drawers one by one. Hm. Nothing, not even a battle map or anything!

Dang it, if you just had the map too, that would be- Wait. You take out a few papers in the drawers and go through them. It’s a memo from Josie.

Mei,

I’ve reviewed LGA battle plans like you asked. Suggest that we go with a defeat-in-detail routine. Teams that try to dogpile LGA seem to fail. Took after Washington and Silva’s examples. Proposing that we try to pick them apart piecemeal instead of attacking them all at once. If we attack all at once, it exposes us to flanks from Elodie and Iris.

Match locale should support it.

Notes:
- Lots of trees outside of the roads and clearings around the roads. High hills and mountains will be difficult to traverse but also provide valuable sight obscuration. Will be good for flanking, if slow for it.
- Elodie Zumwalt travels preferably with fast tanks that can keep up with hers. Noted that the Hellcat commanded by Dalia Earnhardt seems to be her primary companion.
- Scouting reports suggest that Elodie Zumwalt has busied herself upgrading to a Comet. Might make her a threat at longer ranges.
- Iris Blackbourne’s Churchill will likely be their center line in frontline engagements. Best to avoid her and focus squarely on their teams mobile elements so we can pin them in a place where we want them. The heavies can be taken care of at close range.
- I noted several instances throughout their matches where it seems their crews get impetuous. We should exploit this, it has cost them dearly a few times.

In short, LGA is a team that focuses squarely on their mobility. But we can be assured that we can exploit both their overspecialization on such, and also their overconfidence. Griselda is NOT a taskmaster like we are and she clearly does not command the respect of most of her crews considering the mistakes they’ve made on what appear to be their own initiative. They will be tough to beat, but they are not invincible.

P.S. I’ve been made aware that LGA has been put under investigation and their tanks are currently being disassembled. I’d like to remind you that we can always agree to an honorable draw if they are unable to participate. I know you are excited to face Elodie in combat but this is a –team- sport above else. And it’ll be embarrassing if all we do face is Elodie.

Hm. You take a photo of the letter with your phone, then-

You hear footsteps. Not Stack’s. Stack freezes as well.

> JUMP OUT THE WINDOW

You push the papers into the drawer, close it, and then immediately open the window and jump out. Thank GOD it’s ground level. You jump out into some bushes in a side street by her office. Stack follows you as well. You shut the window again then stay quiet. The two of you slowly peek up.

Stepping inside is Mei herself. She walks up to one of her filing cabinets, then opens it up and starts rifling through her papers. Josie steps in as well, talking indistinctly with her. The two of you watch carefully as they talk. Then Mei nods. You slowly creak the window open.

“… and briefing’s in five minutes, Mei. We gotta get this show on the road before they get restless. You know how the girls are.”

Mei looks through her folders. “Yes, yes. I am aware. Has any news come back as to whether LGA will be ready for the match?”

Josie folds her arms, looking hesitant. “Far as I know… no.” She glances away for a second, then says, “Mei, can I just be honest?” Mei nods, not looking at her. “If they come into the match with less tanks than they should, we should consider agreeing to a draw.”

“A draw is worse than losing, Josie,” Mei hisses. “I do not intend to do no such thing.”

“They’re in first place. We’re in first place too. Agreeing to one isn’t going to hurt us,” Josie says. She walks up to Mei, a pleading look in her eyes. “Mei. Come on. If they only come in there with only one tank. We’re going to look like monsters.”

Mei shuts the folder, glaring at Josie. “Well. Maybe they shouldn’t have been accused of cheating then.” Josie blinks, looking down at the ground. “I would play them even if they were to show up in some Aboriginal tractor tank using wood for armor and paintball guns for armament.” She shoves the folder into Josie’s arms. “Let us go brief the girls. Yes?”

“… alright,” Josie mutters. She looks to the window, then you two duck down. “Did you leave that window open?”

“No, I didn’t.” Mei walks over to the window. You two immediately duck into the bushes. Mei shuts the window tight.

Stack growls quietly. “That bitch!”

Stack however has other ideas. “Wait!” You both stop right before exiting the sidestreet. Aw, Stack, what now!? “Let’s go steal one of their Centurions! Part of the plan, right!?”

“They almost just saw us!” you whisper. “If we steal a Centurion, they’ll catch us!”

“It’ll be fine!” Stack nudges you, then says, “Tell you what. I’LL steal it. You go back to the ship.”

“What?!” You glare at her. “Okay, look. I was for the whole stealing thing a little while ago. But they’re going to be looking for us. The entire team is going to know there’s a pair of FNGs wanting to be on their team! If we’re missing and one of their tanks is missing, they’re going to find us and they’re going to do things to us!”

> “Forget the tank, let’s get out of here!”

“Forget the tank, Stack! Come on!” You grab her before she has a chance to run off on you. Stack whines, holind her arms out towards the hangar and-

You hear a tear. Oh no. The bindings are coming loose. You are now on a time limit.

You start hurrying out to the street while Stack mopes in your arms. Sure, any other day you’d be willing to steal one of their tanks. Show them what for. But not, not today. You’re not going to stoop to their level. If they want to face you with just you having one tank, it’ll be your tank. You won’t be using one of theirs. That’ll be giving into their system. You hurry down the street towards the nearest lower deck entrance. Hopefully you can-

“Hey, look! It’s Elouise!” Ah, FUCK. Freya Ward and Julia Brunet sit back on a bench, enjoying some ice cream. “Where are you two going?”

“We got some place to be, hehe!” You start marching past them, laughing nervously. Stack to her credit continues smiling. “Er- St- Sam here is just er- she’s lazy. So I’m carrying her.”

Julia looks over at Freya. “How come you don’t carry me?”

“I carry everyone when we’re in a match,” Freya remarks. The two giggle as you walk on by. Another tearing noise. Oooohhh… please hold. “Hey, briefing’s gonna start in like a couple of minutes. Did you want to get in on it?”

“No, no, that’s okay! That’s for team members and you guys should be going there too, right?!” Please say yes.

Freya says, “Ah, briefings are for schmucks. We can always show up fashionably-“

Julia checks her watch, then looks at Freya. “Actually, Josie’s gonna kick our ass if we’re late again.”

“Ah, baloney.” Freya pouts a bit. “Can’t we have five minutes to ourselves?” You keep walking away. “Hey, El!” She calls to you. “Come on! You can at least go to the briefing in our place!”

“Um. Josie was pretty clear she wanted us to sit this one out.” Another rip. Oooohh… “But she seemed pretty serious about the whole thing you know. So you might not want to test her patience today.”

Freya sighs. “She’s right.”

Julia gently shoves Freya. “No. I’m right. I’ve been telling you this for ten minutes now.” Oh Thank God, please get going, please get going. “Come on. Let’s go.” Yes! They turn around to walk and-

A loud tearing noise is heard beneath your shirt. NOOOOOOO

Freya and Julia immediately turn around and watch as your chest suddenly expands beneath your shirt. One of the buttons pops out, plinking to the ground. Stack lets go of you, shocked as she stands there. Freya and Julia immediately look at your chest, then at you.

Freya points to you. “THAT’S ELODIE ZUMWALT!” Fuck.

“SHE’S A SPY!” screams Julia. “Get her!” RUN.

You and Stack start sprinting down the street, followed closely by Freya and Julia. Freya already has her phone out and is starting to text. She’s calling out people! Oh God, this isn’t good! Stack laughs joyfully as you two run. What excitement is she getting from this!? The two of you sprint across the street towards one of the lower deck tunnels. Yes, please, please!

Arriving out of that tunnel were some of the Mercenary students. They see you immediately. “IT’S THAT COWTITS GIRL! GET HER!” yells one of them. Oh come on! You don’t know the area! There has to be another-

Stack charges at them, bowling through them with a perfect strike. They all fall to the ground, dazed and confused. Oh. That works. You and Stack hurry down the stairs, passing by confused and frightened students unaffiliated with the team. “We just have to get to the boat and we’ll be fine, it’ll be leaving soon!”

“Alright!” you say. You look back to see Freya leading ten or so girls behind you. AAHH! THEY’RE GOING TO CATCH UP!

Stack looks back as well, then grabs a trash can next to the wall and tosses it over. Freya and several girls slip on rubbish and debris and fall over. Ha! Got them! The two of you descend further and further down. “Isn’t this great, Elodie!?”

> “Less talk, more running!”

“Less talk, more running!” you hiss. Admittedly, this is fun, quite fun. But you are never going to do this again. Too much tension, and you are far too recognizable for this to work in a recurring fashion. No, sir! No more spying for you in your future! You got exactly what you wanted and you aren’t going to deviate from that! You keep hurrying and hurrying. Those mercenaries harrow you from a short distance away. This is not good, not good at all!

“Wait, freight elevator!” yells Stack. She points out a freight elevator being loaded up with dollies full of crates and boxes. Aha! You both quickly shove yourselves in, then you hit the door close button. One of the Chinese girls swears at you in Mandarin from the outside as the doors shut on her and on the Mercenaries. Good, good. This’ll take you straight to the port!

After a few minutes riding in the elevator, it opens up for you. You both quickly sprint out into the dockyard where tons and tons of freight ships are being loaded up and unloaded. And one of them is your ticket out. “There!” Stack rushes you along as you all dodge and leap through and over obstacles like dockworkers, crates, barrels, the works.

Then you see the Mercenaries in the corner of your eye. Oh no, they have dogs on leashes too! “There they are!” yells Freya. “Release the dogs!” Julia whistles loudly, signaling the dogs forward.

And the pair of Corgis following them immediately roll around and bark loudly. Freya glares at Julia. “I thought you said Corgis were hunting dogs!”

“They are!” Julia immediately kneels down, rubbing the belly of one of them. “The cutest hunting dogs!”

“Forget her, get them!” Freya and the rest of the mercs pursue you. But by the time they managed to rid themselves of this distraction, you’ve already gone up the gangplank of a ship. The gangplank retracts just before they arrive. Yes, you made it! “Goddamn it! CURSE YOU, COWTITS!” screams Freya as the ship departs.

Stack hugs you, grinning. “Haha! We made it! We really made it!”

Yes, yes we did. It was truly an exhilarating experience.

Now let us never speak of it again.

Shame we didn't get a chance to exchange barbed witticisms with the mercs as we left.

“We did.” Stack hugs you, grinning happily. “We sure did. We managed to get what we came for. It’s only a shame I didn’t get a chance to stick it to them before we left.” You still see the mercenaries shaking their fists at you as your ship departs. “Still, we did it, Stack. Good on you for making a plan such as this.”

“Aw, it’s nothin’!” She punches you in the arm. OW. “It’s just a shame, we’re going to be starving getting back though.”

“Yeah. Once we get back, let’s find some dinner first, okay?” you say.

“Got it!”

The trip back to LGA was thankfully uneventful. There was no concerns about ZES following you or trying to get the authorities involved. You technically didn’t do anything wrong. Much as you were tempted to steal that tank, your conscious thankfully won out and prevented you. By the time you got back to LGA, it was getting dark. You both had sated yourselves at a hot dog stand then decided to head to the hangar.

There, you find Griselda glumly standing by the door. “Hey, Griselda!” You smile at her. No smile from her though. Oh. Stack looks quite nervous as well. “Everything alright?”

Griselda looks to you, then shrugs. “Well. Could be better. Did you get their plans?”

“I’ll text you them,” you say. “We managed to figure out what they’re going to be doing.”

“That’s great, it really is,” says Griselda. Her expression though doesn’t go with the statement.

“Is something wrong?” asks Stack.

Griselda sighs, rubbing the bridge of her nose lightly. “… our tanks aren’t finished.” Oh. “The judges worked double time as fast as they could. They’ll tell me they’ll work harder to get everything ready for the second match as well. But… we don’t have all the tanks ready.” Oh.

“W-… Well how many do we have?” asks Stack.

“Five,” says Griselda. “Your tank. My Sherman. Iris’ Churchill. Hadley’s Jackson. And the King Tiger. That’s all they could get fixed in time. And they’re still trying to get the rest fixed. But that’s all we have.” She frowns deeply. “I’m sorry, guys.”

Stack looks at you, waiting for a response. Nothing. You don’t know what to say about it. She then says to Griselda. “If you try to agree to a draw, you’ll be sorry. We’ll take the field. Won’t we, Ellie?”

"We need to start making some calls. Every team we've played against, everyone we've got connections with, including Kursk and St. Glo, seeing as they helped us out with the NATO vs ITL match earlier in the year. Beg, grovel, cry if we have to, but we must get any tanks they can spare out of them for tomorrow's match. I will not hand Mei a draw because of this bullshit!"

“We need to make some calls. Everyone we know, everyone we’ve beaten, everyone we have connections with. Even Kursk and Saint Gloriana. We’ll beg, grovel, cry if we need to. But we need spare tanks, anything we can get that we can spare for tomorrow’s match. Griselda, I am not going to hand Mei a draw because of this bullshit. She is not going to win just because we got fucked by something like this.”

Griselda stares at you, dumbstruck by your response. Stack as well looks stunned by this too. What? You aren’t.

Griselda says, “… well, they really got your dander up, Ellie.” She smiles a little. “I like that. We’ll make some calls then.”

“And we get those tanks and we beat the crap out of them,” you finish. “Anything they can provide. Everything.”

“We’ll show those Chinese goons they can’t hide behind money! Haha!” Stack bounces up and down in anticipation. “Let’s go!” She hurries off into the hangar. With that, Griselda pats your shoulder, leading you in.

Time to light the beacons.

With the Scots and the Welsh.

Just curious, were people feeling antagonistic or just suffering a bout of kleptomania today?

Probably a bit of anger. Many expected possible conspiracies. Also rivalry between Elodie and Mei.

I see.
All this talk of stealing and sneaking around has somewhat reignited my spark for my prospective GuP crime quest.

Schteel: I will have to admit here, this bit of the narrative sounds pretty contrived. Normally, shit like this will lead to scandals that bring down sanctioning unions. Like, this shit just about killed FIA back in the day.
>>
>>2045337
Ah yes, they were known even until very recently as "Ferrari International Assistance". Not sure if all that new Chinese money and running the school like a Foxconn factory gets ZES any favors with the Tankery officialdom though.

Spying is considered part of reconnaissance and is legal by Senshado rules, so long as there is no tampering or sabotage.
