Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

>Previously on Dark Gate Academy...
You welcomed Manabu to the academy, and Ryoji left to investigate a Darkworld disturbance.

“This is it, Grandfather...” the day I surpass you.

The battlefield is cracked, shattered and broken. All around you, destruction. Nothing exists, other than yourself and the towering man standing across from you, holding his sword and shield high and proud. You feel your energy draining, but you know that now you can finally take him on. You're so close, and you think you've found his weakpoint. You will finally be strong enough to take down Wei Kobashi.

“This is it!” You exclaim as you ready your lance. “BE READY!”

You charge, leaping through the air with your weapon branded. His upper right shoulder seems to stiffen up when you target that spot, his old age affecting his reflexes. Just a little, but enough to give a split second of hesitation before he can defend himself... and that is the point where you'll strike. You drive your lance down while letting out a battle-cry to take your mind off the pain... only for a hand to quickly wrap itself around your neck and slam you head first into the concrete. He caught you... he's too fast.

You groan, trapped in the earth, as the last thing you see is your grandfather raising his greatsword, and slamming it into your throat.

“You have died.”

The area around you disappears, and you find yourself back in that empty room, as Tekina opens the door to her simulation area. “Again? Tough break, Saki.”

“Let me go again,” you request. “One more time, I think I worked it-”

“No,” Tekina shakes her head. “Saki, my simulation protects you from real injuries, but there's nothing it can do to stop you from overexerting yourself. That was your fifth time today, what if you're needed for an actual combat emergency?”

“But-”

“Besides,” Tekina comforts you. “It'll do you no good to obsess over it. My Wei simulation isn't even accurate to his real power. I just pushed the software to it's absolute limits and labelled it as Wei. Your real grandfather is much weaker than this.”

You tilt your head. “Really?”

“Of course-wait... no, he's stronger. Sorry, I got that mixed up!”

Tekina smiles earnestly and tilts her head, but it doesn't stop you from feeling the sting. You furrow your brow and let out a sigh. “Right... thanks.”

“Hey boss, you done in there yet?” Akio's voice calls out to you, as you make your way outside of the simulation room to see him waiting with his arms folded. “Geez, I thought the great Saki Kobashi would be more generous. You've been hogging that thing all morning! Oh well, guess I'll just have to skip class in order to get my workout in.”

“That's not happening,” you reply. “And sorry... I guess I did get a little carried away.”

“A little?” Akio scoffs. “Boss, you're starting to act like Rei. You've even got that competitive crazy eye she gets.”

“I do not!” you protest.

Hikaru slams a book shut as she sits in a chair by Tekina's desk. “No, the bonehead's right... in more ways than one. You even postponed a class meeting to spend more time working out your issues with your grandpa. Saki Kobashi cancelled a scheduled appointment... we thought the sky was falling.”

Akio nods. “Yeah! Listen boss, as deputy class leader-”

“Ken's the deputy class leader-”

“-Ha, good one,” Akio smirks. “As deputy leader, I think I should tell you we're a little concerned about your behaviour lately. It's not like you to get caught up in training like this. That's usually me or Rei's job.”

“Yeah, you're right...” you admit. “It's just... I've been working hard to get stronger.”

“Isn't it the role of Class leader to make the class stronger?” Hikaru points out. “Not just yourself.”

“Yeah...” You admit. She's right, you've been so focused on yourself lately. Ryoji's been gone for two days, the threat of Archdemon's are still on the horizon and after your talk with your grandfather... it's hard not to get lost within yourself. But... Hikaru's words do give you a good idea...

“Actually, you make a great point, Hikaru!” you exclaim. “Emergency class meeting!”

“W-what?!” Akio snaps. “I'm supposed to be training!”

“Don't worry,” you wave him off. “You'll be getting plenty of training. PLENTY of training...”

Akio raises an eyebrow. “Boss, why are you using your scary voice?”

“Better draw up that will,” Hikaru jokes. “We may die today.”

>Later

You burst into the dorm lounge where everyone is gathered, your thick folder in hand. You slam it down upon the coffee table and look to the rest of the class.

“Frayed hair...” Chihiro notes. “Jittery stance, that manic look in her eyes... could it be that my dear Saki has lost her marbles!”

“No, I've discovered something more fun than marbles!”

“You think marbles are fun?” Kosuke asks.

You shake your head. “I never played with them as a kid! Marbles requires at least two players!”

“I regret asking...”

You leaf through the folder and come to the page you wanted. “So, I've been running battle simulations against my grandfather in order to strengthen myself recently... but I've come to an interesting realisation. Why run inaccurate and scripted simulations, when we have people more powerful than us in person at the ready? What better training experience is there than to be placed in there with an opponent who outclasses you and being forced to adapt? And so, I devised OPERATION: GET BUFF!”

“Name needs work,” Hikaru notes.

“No it doesn't!” Isamu exclaims. “Getting buff is the greatest operation one could undertake!”

You nod. “Right, so I split the available class into ten groups of two, based on our respective strengths and weaknesses, and assigned each group against the awakened teacher and Class 3 student who matches! This test is designed to give you all a personalised challenge designed to target your greatest flaw, a flaw you must overcome if you wish to succeed!”

“Hmm...” Ken thinks it over. “Saki may have gone crazy through a lack of sleep, but her idea's still a good one.”

“Thanks Ken!” you smile, as you hand out envelopes. “Anyway, here are your pairings. Treat your partner with the utmost respect, because you're gonna have to work together to come out on top!”

“Hang on a minute!” Rei exclaims as she pulls her pairing from her envelope. “Kobashi, there must be some kind of mistake!”

“Huh? Why?”

“You and I aren't paired together!” She explains. “There's no way that can be right, unless... oh, I see? Intimidated that I'll show you up if we were to be paired together, right? That I'd take the spotlight? I can see right through you Kobashi!”

>But Rei, I'd have loved for us to be paired together! Two buddies, back-to-back!

>I considered us, but ultimately I went with Akemi as my pairing.

"Hooray!" Akemi yells as she leaps onto your back. "Best buddy team! We should call ourselves the Sakemis! The Mecha Dragons! Cobra Kai!"

"I think that last one's taken..."

Rei's eye twitches as she watches you and Akemi high-five. "Best buddy... oh, I see how it is! The great Saki Kobashi would rather have fun with her pal than actually challenge herself against her greatest rival! Well, I guess I'll just have to show you how it's done, and whip my partner into shape-"

"What have you got your panties in a twist over now?" Rini smirks as she approaches, patting Rei's on her back hard enough to make her stumble. "Har! You think I'm not good enough? Your galcrush on Saki is getting a little out of hand!"

"G-Galcrush?!" Rei twitches. "This is a matter of seeing who the greatest fighter of all is, not some petty highschool-"

"Yeah, yeah..." Rini mutters, cleaning out her ear. "How about we just focus on our own trial, okay Flash?"

"Don't call me that..."

You turn your head to face Akemi. "Well, according to my schedule, we'll be the last team up."

"Oh, we can spend that time coming up with a team song!" Akemi exclaims.

"Yes..." you nod, confused. "But Tekina also set up monitors so we could watch the other trials take place. It's up to me as Class leader to evaluate my classmates' performance, after all!"

Akemi gives a thumbs-up. "Okay! But... who'll be evaluating us?"

"I suppose I'll have to," you explain. "I think I can trust myself to give an objective view of my performance... I hope."

Akemi nods. "Okay... who's up first!"

You leaf through your folder. "Ah... that would be the team of Hoshi and Seishiro. Let's check it out!"

You and Akemi grab seats by the monitor, filming the inside of Tekina's simulation room. The simulation has created a simple cityscape... after all, with Archdemons potentially invading this will be your most likely battleground in the near future. Though instead of a simulated challenge, Hoshi and Seishiro will be finding themselves facing a very real opponent...

>Team Hoshi & Seishiro's trial

"A-aaaa...." Hoshi mutters as she enters the arena, pressing her fingers together in a nervous stance.

"What the hell..." Seishiro mutters as he looks over to his partner. "How did I get stuck with you? We're nothing alike!"

"S-stuck?" Hoshi mumbles. "Oh, s-sorry..."

Seishiro sighs. "I didn't mean it as an insult, it's just... I was hoping I'd be paired with my bro Aki. Or even Ken... or Hiro... or Akira. You know, someone cool!"

"I'm not cool?" Hoshi asks.

"You're as cool as a boiling kettle," Seishiro explains.

"O-oh..." Hoshi mumbles. "W-wait... isn't that Yuji-sensei?"

The two look across from where they're standing, and the history teacher comes into their view, levitating while sitting cross-legged, smoking on a long pipe. He's not even looking at the pair across from him.

"Ah sweet!" Seishiro exclaims. "Saki gave us a teacher to fight! And his guard is down! Check this out, Hoshi!"

"W-wait, maybe we should..."

"TAKE THIS!" Seishiro yells as he unloads a round of bullets towards the casual teacher. Said teacher proceeds to let out a yawn, before placing his hand out, as the bullets stop in mid-air.

"Uh oh..." Seishiro gulps. "It's just like in that movie..."

Yuji flicks his wrist, and soon the bullets turn to face Seishiro again, firing towards him even faster than they were first launched.

Hoshi ducks and places her hands to the ground, using her magic to raise the earth above her in front of Seishiro, creating a shield to block out the bullets. Unfortunately for her, she's unable to raise that shield in time, and one of the bullets goes whizzing right through Seishiro's shoulder.

"GAH!" he yells out as he falls behind the rock wall. "What the hell?! That one hit me!"

"A-aaah!" Hoshi squeals. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"I thought you were supposed to be good at this crap!" Seishiro yells, wincing through the pain. "But Crybaby Hoshi's just useless."

"I... I..." Hoshi mumbles, her eyes filling with tears.

Seishiro grunts. "What? Crybaby Hoshi gonna cry again? You... you're really crying... crap."

Hoshi places her head in her hands, sobbing profusely... as Yuji raises a piece of wreckage from a building. A large sheet of metal levitates, though the air, as Yuji takes a casual puff of his pipe before launching it towards Hoshi.

"Children, I'm really disappointed that you aren't paying attention," he sighs.

"Crap!" Seishiro yells. "Hoshi, look out!"

"Hoshi, look out!" Seishiro yells, leaping out from behind the safety of the rock wall in order to tackle his classmate. He takes her to the ground as the sheet of metal flies just overhead, as the two scramble behind the rock wall to protect themselves.

"That was a close one..." Seishiro breathes a sigh of relief, before turning to see Hoshi wiping her red eyes. "Uhh... sorry."

Hoshi shakes her head. "N-no, you're right... it was my fault you got hurt. I... I really am useless..."

"You're not useless!" Seishiro exclaims. "Come on, you know me! I'm just dumb! I never think things through!"

Hoshi pauses. "You're right... you don't."

"See! I'm an idiot!" Seishiro laughs.

"You... you are..." Hoshi mutters, her eyes brimming with possibility.

Seishiro frowns. "Okay, Hoshi... you're a little too eager to agree now."

"No..." Hoshi explains. "I... I think I worked it out."

"What?"

"Our flaw," Hoshi explains. "Why Saki placed us against Yuji. Look, he's calm and composed... sitting there, prepared against any attack that we throw at him."

"Okay, so?"

"And your first idea was to shoot at him... and I acted too late to defend myself," Hoshi explains. "That's what ties us together. You're too hotheaded and I crack under pressure... so we never think things through and formulate a plan. Which is why Saki gave us an opponent to strong and too prepared to attack head on."

"Ah, I see..." Seishiro ponders. "Good think I got paired with one of the class nerds! It would have taken me all day to work that out!"

"Hmm..." Hoshi thinks. "Our best bet would be to work as a team, distracting him then attacking when his guard is down..."

"Huh... wait!" Seishiro notes. "I could toss one of my flash grenades his direction. Even if he stops it in mid-air, it'll go off, and blind him long enough for you to hit him some fancy magic attack."

"Or I could try to use wind magic to throw him off balance from his position, and you can hit him yourself," Hoshi notes.

"Okay, let's do this..." Seishiro mutters. "Gah, I'm weirdly nervous. Having to think about something instead of just doing it..."

"Don't worry, it's easy!" Hoshi reassures him.

"Okay, you can do this Seish, you're cool... you're cool..."

"Y-yeah, you're cool!" Hoshi smiles warmly.

Seishiro perks up. "R-really? You think so? Hah! You hear that Yuji? Someone thinks I'm cool!"

"That's nice, Seishiro!" Yuji smiles, before Seishiro jumps out and tosses his flash grenades. Yuji places his hand out and stops them in mid-air, but they go off regardless, letting out a blinding light that obscures Yuji's vision as Hoshi steps out beyond the Rock Wall.

She surveys the surroundings and notices something very interesting about the way Yuji is levitating. He seems to do so by controlling the air around him, pushing him up... however, Hoshi sees that large collection of controlled air in one spot as an opportunity to unleash an incredible explosion spell directly beneath the teacher.

"H-here we go..." Hoshi mutters. "EXPLOSION!"

The air below Yuji ignites, creating a massive blast in the area, enough to take down even one of the teacher's of Dark Gate.

"Did... did we do it?" Hoshi asks, as the smoke settles. A hand on her head tells her otherwise.

"Well, you would have..." Yuji explains as he stand behind her, seemingly having teleported to safety at the last second. "Had I not overheard your strategy. Still, well done on devising a strategy in the first place."

"Thank you, sensei."

"Of course..." Yuji responds as he summons a wall of spikes to separate Seishiro from Hoshi and himself. "I believe our trial is at an end. I don't believe there's a way out of this."

"Actually," Hoshi explains as she raises her hand, revealing a small spherical object in it. "Seishiro gave me this grenade just in case plan A failed."

"What?" Yuji gasps, but it's too late, as the flash goes off. Yuji is distracted, his wall of spikes fall, and Seishiro leaps forward to land a punch to the teacher's jaw knocking him down.

"Ha! Take that!" Seishiro yells. "I handed her that grenade while I was yelling at you before. I hoped she'd get why... uhh, Hoshi? You crying again?"

"N-no..." Hoshi sobs, wiping her eyes. "The f-flash just really stings... that's all..."

Hoshi and Seishiro: Successful.

"Oooh..." Akemi mumbles as she stares at the monitor, eating a bag of chips that you don't remember her having before.

You nod. "I have to admit, I wasn't sure how well they'd handle their trial... but it turned out pretty well."

You open up your folder and begin to make note of your biggest observation during the trial.

"We're all smarter than we think!" Akemi laughs. "I could be a rocket scientist, and I'd never know!"

"Akemi..." you point out. "You already build advanced machines."

"Whoaaa..." Akemi mumbles, amazed at the revelation. "So, who's next?"

"Hikaru and Satomi," you explain.

>Hikaru and Satomi's trial

"Wow, I'm sure Saki took all afternoon trying to piece this one together," Hikaru smirks.

Satomi giggles. "She couldn't have picked a more obvious team."

"I get what she's going for," Hikaru admits. "We're best friends, but we were so distant during our time here. She wants to see us make up for lost time and work on team combat... considering we'll be around each-other so much, it's good to prepare us to fight side by side more often in case of a surprise attack."

"A perfectly reasonable experiment to conduct," Satomi places a finger to her chin. "Though I must admit it's kinda... boring?"

"Yeah, I was expecting more of a curveball thrown our... way..."

Their curveball turns the corner to face them, as Shinji throws his sword over his shoulder.

"Oh... of course," Hikaru notes. "Should have expected that. Saki thinks that I would hesitate to fight my brother, or Satomi would hesitate to fight an old family friend."

"Actually, according to the notes I was given it's because the two of you aren't very strong," Shinji explains. "And Saki needed a powerful opponent to throw your way. Maybe you would have realised that if you had actually focused on the trial instead of nitpicking and dissecting it."

"Hey, watch your mouth!" Hikaru yells at her older brother.

"There's nothing wrong with a good dissection!" Satomi protests.

"That's it, I'll show you!" Hikaru shouts, as she prepares for battle.

"Now!" Hikaru yells, as Satomi fires a vial at Shinji.

"NOXIOUS GAS!" Satomi yells as the vial breaks, releasing a noxious gas into the air. Shinji doesn't panic however, as he simply pulls out a gas mask and places his over his face.

"What?!" Hikaru yells. "Oh... I see. Saki knows I wouldn't hesitate to show Shinji up... but Shinji knows all of our tricks."

"Of course!" Satomi groans. "He even proofread my notes back in middle school!"

Hikaru smirks. "Saki's forcing us against an opponent who is tough, strong and knows our usual plans, forcing us to devise a joint strategy. But something Saki doesn't seem to be aware of... is that we already have."

Hikaru fires a small burst of water from her jet-blade, one the moves to fast for Shinji to dodge. Despite moving at the speed of a bullet, the water wouldn't hurt Shinji an ounce... but it certainly cuts through the gas mask, allowing the gas to seep in. Shinji begins to cough, and quickly retreat into an alleyway.

"Dangit!" Satomi yells. "That concoction would have caused anyone else to faint with one whiff! Your brother's tough."

"Real tough," Hikaru agrees. "Hence why he takes to being a guard dog so well. But... we have him on the ropes. Now to follow it up."

"Do you think you can flood him out of that alley?"

"In theory, but there's not enough water around to do that," Hikaru sighs. "Then again... I think that alley will leave him backed up against a wall. No way he can come out another side and get the drop on us. We still have the advantage here."

Satomi nods. "Okay... so how are you going to get him out of there?"

Hikaru stands at the entry to the alley and begins to call out. "Oh, what's this? The mighty soldier Shinji is running away? Geez, I thought you were supposed to be a tough guy!"

No answer from inside the alley.

"Heh, you thought you'd be able to predict our offence?" Hikaru laughs. "Give me a break. You don't know anything about me!"

"... That's not true."

"Truth is, you don't want anything to do with your little sister, do you?" Hikaru calls out.

"..."

"You think I'm embarrassment, that I cramp your style! I'm sure if Maro told you to, you'd come out of there in a hurry... but you don't respect me. Not as a challenger... and certainly not as a sister. Even when we're matched together in this trial, you... you run away!"

"Hikaru..."

Hikaru's eyes well up as she cries out into the alley. "You've never cared about me... you're the worst brother in the world..."

From the shadows of the alley, Shinji steps out. His sword dropped by his side, as he envelops his crying sister in a hug. "Hikaru... sis... I'm so sorry. I never meant to make you feel like that... I'll never abandon you again."

Hikaru sniffles as she returns the hug. "Oh big bro, you... you... you are such a sucker."

Hikaru holds Shinji tight as Satomi splashes the two of them with a batch of chemicals.

"Oh, that's a cheap trick!" Shinji yells. "A low blow, even for you... wait, these chemicals aren't doing anything..."

Hikaru hops back with a smirk on her face. "Of course not, you think I'd let myself get hit with them if they did anything immediate? Nah, that batch doesn't do anything when it makes contact with human skin."

"Oh..."

"It does explode on contact with water, though."

"... Oh."

Shinji moves to grab his sword, but it's too late.

"JET BLADE!" Hikaru yells, as a massive crescent blast of water fires at Shinji, igniting the chemicals and sending him flying back, his weight crashing hard into the floor beneath him.

Hikaru smirks as she makes her way up to her brother. "Well, how do you like that?"

Shinji picks himself up, groaning in pain, before placing his hand atop Hikaru's head, ruffling her hair.

"Hey, cut that out!"

"Sorry..." Shinji smiles. "It's just... I'll be graduating in a couple months and... I'm so proud of you."

"S-shut up!" a blushing Hikaru yells, as Satomi lets out a little giggle.

"What she did seemed pretty mean," Akemi points out. "But it worked! And Shinji looked happy at the end!"

"Indeed," you reply.

"It's good when things have happy endings," Akemi smiles. "So, who's next?"

"Ah, it's Rei and Rini!" You note.

>Rini and Rei's trial

"What's that look about?" Rini growls as Rei frowns in her direction.

"Lousy Kobashi..." Rei mumbles. "Won't let us join forces so we can see who's truly superior-OUCH!"

Rei's mumbling is interrupted by a swift punch to the top of the head from Rini. "What was that for?!"

"You were bugging me," Rini grumbles. "Plus, I ain't your biggest fan. I generally ain't a fan of anyone who walks around thinking they're a princess."

"Oh please, I'm the princess?" Rei scoffs. "You're the one who married into a rich family and looks down on everyone else! Just because you do it in boots and a hoodie doesn't make you better!"

"I've never even sniffed Kosuke's family's money!" Rini yells, rolling up her sleeves, ready to fight. "My family was poor as hell! We barely managed to scrape by! You probably grew up in a mansion, but just because you don't get everything you want, you think the whole world is against you!"

"Is that what you think?" Rei snarls. "Well... you'd be surprised..."

"Umm, excuse me?" the voice of Tekina calls out as the school nurse raises her hand. "I believe you ladies are supposed to be facing me, not each-other."

"Hey, nobody asked you poindexter!" Rini fires back. "This is between me and Flash!"

"Really, the school nurse?" Rei places her hand on her head. "Kobashi... you give me a teacher, but it's the school nurse? Are you trying to make fun of me?"

"Oh dear, am I interrupting something?" Tekina smiles. "Oh well, I'm not in any rush. Continue."

"No," Rini shakes her head. "We should deal with this first. Saki'll be pissed if we can't even take on the school nurse."

"Oh by all means, keep talking!" Tekina laughs. "I'm okay waiting! After all, I've already booby trapped where you're standing!"

"... Wait what?" Rei mutters, but it's too late, as large nets spring up from the ground beneath the two girls. Rini is caught in the net, unable to move, while Rei just about manages to escape with her speed.

Rei lets out a sigh. "Dammit... we got too hot-headed, and our enemy took advantage. Now I see what you were getting at, Saki... okay, now what?"

Rei springs into action, drawing her sword and charging for her opponent. She lunges with her sword at incredible speed... but Tekina is able to move out of the way, a big grin on her face. Rei tries to follow up with a kick while in mid-air, but Tekina catches the speedster's foot and clamps... something to it. She tosses Rei aside as she lands on her feet to inspect what just got attached to her ankle.

"Huh? This is..."

"A few tons of weight," Tekina smiles. "I figured it was exactly what you needed to slow you down a little."

Rei scoffs. "Oh please, even with whatever weight you add on, I'm still faster than anyone!"

Tekina laughs and clasps her hand together. "Oh, how true! But that's not the experiment I'm conducting, dear! In fact, I'm more curious to how your speed reacts with only one leg being weighed down."

Rei's eyes widen as she comes to the revelation... Tekina has weighed down a single leg, throwing off the balance in her steps... a balance that was hard enough to maintain when moving at the speeds she did.

"Dammit..." Rei mutters. "I guess this is my own fault. I shouldn't have underestimated you... you're still a teacher."

"We all make mistakes!" Tekina reassures her with a smile. "Some mistakes are more devastating than others, however!"

With that, Tekina skips towards Rei, a smile on her face and a dangerous intent in her eyes.

Tekina skips towards Rei, who leaps back to avoid an attack. Tekina catches her by the weighted leg, however, and pulls her down, driving her leg hard into the ground, crashing her foot through the earth and trapping her. As Rei struggles to free herself, Tekina appears before her.

"You know, I've already noticed 52 points in your body that I can target to disable you. Luckily I only need one."

With that, Tekina drives her pinkie finger between the ribs of Rei, causing her to gasp in pain, unable to breathe. She keels over, as Tekina turns her attention to Rini, who is breaking free from her net.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Rini grunts. "All these sneaky moves... they're so annoying!"

Rini pumps her fists, ready for battle, as Tekina lets out a sigh.

"I was hoping to disable you without effort early," Tekina explains. "I didn't think it safe for you to properly engage in battle, considering-"

"That's it!" Rini yells. "You're going down! Take this! FIST OF TEN THOUSAND DEATHS!"

Rini charges at Tekina, letting loose with a flurry of fists. Immediately, the nurse goes on the defensive, not willing to fight back against Rini for some reason. This hesitation even allows Tekina to be hit by a few punches from Rini's devastating yet stupidly named attack.

Tekina quickly falls back, losing her composure somewhat, as Rini moves to Rei. She breaks her foot free from the ground, as the speedster lets out a sigh of relief.

"Thanks, I was in a bit of a-"

Rini slaps Rei across the face.

"Ow! What the hell?!"

"You've got to be a bigger idiot than I am!" Rini yells. "I just unleashed me best attack...it definitely did it's damage, but not even that could stop her. There's a reason Saki placed the two of us against her... we can't beat her ourselves. We've gotta work together... as much as the thought makes me wanna vomit."

"No..." Rei mutters. "I know that's what Kobashi devised, but I need to try and win on my own. I know that I can do this... I can prove myself-"

"Why the hell do you gotta prove anything to your friends?" Rini interrupts.

This stops Rei dead in her tracks. Her determined face softens, as she looks towards Rini in silence, then back towards Tekina.

"... What's your plan?"

"Huh?" Rini pauses. "That changed you mind? Uhh... I don't really have much of a plan..."

"We need something," Rei points out. "No matter how stupid."

"Well, if we take her from both sides, we might have a shot," Rini explains, "But I've got another option... if you don't mind looking stupid."

"You ready?" Rini asks.

"Ready as I'll ever be," Rei sighs. "Go ahead and do it..."

Rini nods, and grabs Rei by the ankle. "Hey nurse! Catch this!"

Rini uses her strength to fling Rei through the air, hurdling her towards Tekina. Tekina raises her arms up to defend herself, but Rei comes crashing down with heel kick from her weighted foot. She smashes directly into Tekina, taking the nurse down, crashing face first into the concrete below.

"I look like an idiot..." Rei mutters. "But I feel like a winner."

"Congratulations," Tekina smiles. "You came out on top, girls... though I have to admit, this must be disappointing for you, Rei."

"Huh... why?"

"Well, with your competitive spirit, I assumed you wanted me at full strength, but I had to hold back due to Rini's potential-"

"OKAY, THAT'S ENOUGH OUT OF YOU!" Rini yells.

"Wait..." Rei mutters. "Why did Tekina have to hold back? I... I didn't beat her at full strength?"

Rini sighs. "I suppose I owe it to you, since your world seems to be crumbling right now. I... kinda... might be pregnant."

"What?! When?! How?!"

"How do you think?" Rini replies with a raised eyebrow. "And calm down, I don't know for sure yet... but I didn't want to cause suspicion by skipping out on the trials."

"I requested Rini especially," Tekina explains. "So she wouldn't have to explain her secret to any of the other staff."

"Secret?" Rei mutters. "Then... who knows about this?"

"Just me, Kosuke, Tekina... and now you," Rini explains.

"Wait, Ryoji doesn't even know?"

"Nah, it's really not a big deal-"

"Kobashi doesn't know?"

"-It could just be nothing-"

"HA! Take that Kobashi! I was let in on a secret that you-"

A punch to the head shuts Rei up.

"Ow!" She exclaims. "Oh... and by the way, I'm sorry for snapping at you before. You're actually a pretty good teammate."

Rini pouts. "And... I guess I should be sorry too. I don't know anything about your upbringing... I shouldn't have assumed."

"Well..." Rei explains. "Mine's a lot closer than yours than you'd ever think. My folks aren't exactly, well..."

"Say no more," Rini waves it off. "Heh... no wonder Saki put us together... she knows her best friends pretty well..."

"Okay, now you're gonna make me sick."

"Heh..."

Rini and Rei: Successful.

"Huh, I wonder what they're talking about?" Akemi ponders, starting into a tub of popcorn. "They're too far away from the cameras..."

"All that matters is that they were successful," you reply, as you make note in your folder.

>These two left alone together is a disaster. They're better suited as part of a larger group.

While it's certainly nice that when push comes to shove these two can put their tempers aside and work together, it's clear that while left alone they'll struggle to do so, even when knowing it to be the right answer. They're better suited in a larger group, with a tactician who can keep them in check. Still... when they do work together, they are a force to be reckoned with.

"Who next?" Akemi asks.

"It's... ha, what a coincidence!" you note. "Isamu and Kosuke!"

>Isamu and Kosuke's trial

"Oh Rini... you're so damn reckless," Kosuke sighs, as he enters the simulation room beside Isamu.

"Ah! Worried for your lady love?" Isamu asks.

Kosuke shakes his head. "Nah, she knows what she's doing... do we have to do this?"

"OF COURSE!" Isamu yells. "Didn't you hear the name of the operation? GET BUFF! A true challenge for a pair of true heroes!"

"Don't lump me in with you," Kosuke sighs. "Well, since you're so eager, maybe you can do all the work? I mean, we're both pretty crummy at fighting, but you can just go all angel mode and finish this quickly, right?"

"Ah, my ultimate form requires vast amounts of concentration, and for me to have pushed my body beyond it's upper limits! As great as the glorious and noble hero Isamu Iori is... I can't go for it right away," Isamu admits, breaking his boisterous character in defeat towards the end of his statement. "And for that, I need your help! The two of us can be the greatest pair, if only we worked-"

"No thanks," Kosuke remarks. "If you can't go angel mode, then whatever. I'll gladly take the loss, whatever gets me back in bed faster."

"Is sleep and relaxation all you can think about?" Isamu asks. "This level of sloth and apathy is not becoming of a hero!"

"Neither is shouting like a child and prancing around with a cape," Kosuke points out. "So I think we can agree that we're both losers. Anyway, who are we up against?"

"Oh, that would be me-gah!"

Takeshi steps out towards the two, but quickly trips on his laces. "Huh?! Now how did those get tied together?"

Takeshi frees himself and stands up, dusting off his pants before placing his hand on the back of his head and chuckling. "Well, I guess I'm your opponent now!"

"Huh..." Kosuke mutters. "We got the janitor. Now that I think about it Isamu, we might actually have this?"

They certainly did not have this.

That's all for tonight! Thanks for playing! Thread will continue tomorrow!

Takeshi smiles and waves at his two competitors, a sword in hand. "Hey guys! How have you been? You been taking your studies seriously? Don't forget to drink plenty of milk!"

"I wonder how he got demoted to Janitor," Kosuke mutters with a sigh. "Well, it looks like Saki doesn't think we can take on any of the bigger fish."

"What?!" Isamu exclaims. "That would be an insult to my heroic spirit, my quest for the greatest challenge-"

"She's right," Kosuke adds.

"Huh?!" Isamu gasps.

Kosuke shakes his head. "This is probably hard for you to accept, but you and I are the scrubs of this class. That doesn't bother me, 'cause I've never tried or cared to be anything else, but you? Something tells me you put a lot more stock in that crap."

"B-but..." Isamu mutters. "I'm Isamu Iori, the-"

"The greatest hero, we know..." Kosuke mutters. "I get the bit you're going for, but how about we cut to the chase and just be thankful Saki gave us something easy to work with?"

"I..." Isamu mutters. "No! It's a hero's duty to give 110% every single time, no matter his opponent!"

"It's not even possible to give that much," Kosuke points out, but it's too late.

"Halt you villainous champion of disposed waste!" Isamu points at Takeshi as he summons his spear. "My name is Isamu Iori, the greatest hero, and I shall vanquish you right here on the battlefield!"

"Oh, cool! Good luck!" Takeshi smiles, as Isamu charges towards him.

"HEROIC SLAAAAAAAAASH!" Isamu yells as he leaps at Takeshi with his spear.

Takeshi leans down to tie his shoe, and Isamu flies overhead, crashing directly into one of the buildings.

"Oops, sorry!" Takeshi yells.

"Oh my god..." Kosuke sighs. "Looks like I'll have to do something. What a bother..."

Kosuke summons his sword and lunges towards Takeshi... who easily steps to the side and grabs Kosuke by the wrist. "Oh hey, trying to sneak up on me?" Takeshi asks. "I'm actually not really sure. You were too loud for it to be a sneak attack, but also way too slow to surprise me. Oh, were you just trying to greet me?"
>>
Kosuke breaks free, and leaps to kick Takeshi in the head... but Takeshi slips and falls out of reach. Kosuke lands on his feet, only to be tripped up as Takeshi rolls on the floor, picking himself off the ground. Takeshi dusts himself off, and seemingly turns and steps on the prone Kosuke's ribs without noticing.

"Oh, sorry!" Takeshi apologises. "Didn't see you there! Here, let me help you up!"

Takeshi grabs Kosuke by the wrist and pulls him up... with enough force to send him crashing into the same building as Kosuke.

"Oh..." Kosuke groans, as he and Isamu pull themselves from the wreckage. "I think I get it now. Takeshi... he's playing us..."

"Hm?" Isamu asks. "Are you to say that our great teacher Takeshi is more intelligent than-"

"Nope, he's still a complete idiot," Kosuke explains. "But... he harnesses that stupidly. It controls him... he's become so used to stumbling around... that he actually has complete control over his clumsiness..."

"I can't say I understand!" the ever dim-witted Isamu replies with a smile.

"It sounds like a damn oxymoron," Kosuke sighs. "But he fights in a way that throws his opponent's off-guard, makes them feel like he's not a threat... makes them instinctively go for openings that aren't really there..."

"Hey, that sounds pretty smart!" Isamu exclaims. "Kosuke Tatsumi, you have quite the mind for combat! Why don't you put it on display more often?"

"... Don't need to," Kosuke explains. "Now... how do we handle this?"

"I guess if I have to do this..." Kosuke mutters. "You sit back, Isamu. I'm gonna fight fire with fire."

Kosuke steps out to challenge Takeshi, beckoning for the teacher to come at him. Takeshi nods and charges at Kosuke... who simply slouches down on the ground, resting on his side as Takeshi goes flying over him. Kosuke places a hand on his chin and lets out a yawn, his laziness playing into his way of fighting. Takeshi spins around and tries to stomp on Kosuke, but Kosuke simply rolls along the floor, avoiding each stomp... until Takeshi trips up, falling into an improvised elbow drop on Kosuke's spine.

Kosuke is pinned down, as Takeshi picks himself up again. "Ah, I see what you were going for... pretty clever! But you can't really rely on gimmicks like that in every situation. Seems to me like you just discovered the easiest thing for you to do, and since it came easy you assumed success would come easy too. But for real success, you have to put a little more effort than that. But... oh well! That's enough lecturing from me! I'm just the janitor!"

With that, Takeshi kicks Kosuke up with his foot, before hitting a roundhouse to Kosuke's face that sends the lazy boy flying and knocks him out cold.

Only then does Takeshi pull out his sword proper, turning to Isamu as he does. "Well... I guess that's one down. How do you want to do this?"

Isamu's eyes widen as he grips his spear, seeing that his partner is already down and out.

Isamu grips his spear tight as he lunges towards Takeshi. Takeshi tumbles back, and Isamu goes flying overhead, but the wannabe hero quickly lands on his feet and tackles Takeshi again, holding his spear sideways to pin Takeshi to the ground.

"Haha!" Isamu exclaims. "I have you now, villain!"

"Huh, looks like you do!" Takeshi smiles. "Good for you! I wasn't expecting you to catch me, if I'm being honest. The fact you managed it makes me very proud!"

"Well, I am the legendary hero Isamu Iori!" He boasts with a proud grin.

Takeshi nods, still pinned down by the throat. "Yeah, you sure are... you know, you were always one of my favourite students, Isamu. Hmm... can I ask, why aren't you using that angel form of yours that I've heard about."

"My mighty and ultimate form doesn't come out until I've been pushed to my absolute limits!" Isamu exclaims. "Only when times are at their darkest, when the lives of myself and the people I love are in danger, does the Golden Champion shine at his brightest!"

"Hmm..." Takeshi thinks it over. "So you unlocked your angel form, a form that relies on being confident and aware of your true self... and you can't activate it at will? Isn't that sort of... pathetic?"

"Hm?" Isamu asks... before Takeshi slips out of his grip. Takeshi spins around, slicing the air with his sword, blasting Isamu with flames in the process.

"Ah, hot!" Isamu exclaims. "When did?"

Takeshi chuckles nervously. "O-oh this? Yeah, my sword gets hotter the longer I hold the hilt. Lucky for me you took the time to boast, huh?"

Isamu's eyes widen in horror as he realises his mistake.

"In fact, I've been holding this for a while now," Takeshi explains. "So let me leave you with a parting message, buddy! Having fun is great, and it's always important to be yourself, but... well, I've seen people die. Friends die. Friends who might not have died if I wasn't always goofing off and bumbling about... my old man used to call me useless. It always made me so angry... but he was right. I was useless. I never really tried, I was too busy being an idiot to realise just the situation I was in..."

"S-sensei?" Isamu mutters. "T-there happen to be a lot of flames around you, and you're kinda... scaring me..."

As the flames swirl around Takeshi as he holds his sword high, his smile fades. "So my advice to you... be yourself, but if you truly want to be a hero, to help the people around you, and if you honestly want to stop being just a pretender, a boy in a cape... then you should grow up."

Isamu doesn't have time to open his mouth before Takeshi lets loose with his ultimate attack, the flames from his sword swirling in a massive spiral towards him.

I disagree. I think its unfair to say the classical ideal of a hero is the wrong path for Isamu to take, just because Takeshi is older and wiser doesnt mean he knows isamu as well as he thinks he does.

If Isamu wasnt totally sure of himself and his path he wouldnt have been able to reach angel form, to take him off that path seems worse than reaffirming that is who he is.

Well the thing is what he says is completly true, the thing is even after all this Isamu still treats everything like a game, Class 3 and Takeshi have seen a bunch of their friends die, thats the reality in the academy, Class 2 has gotten a few close calls through the last year and here we have Isamu still treating everything like a kids game.

I am not saying that Isamu must go full mature but he needs to realize that ot everything will go well all the time only because you really want it.

"KESHI INFERNOOOOOOO!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z96ModuOAQY

Isamu can't move. He can't do anything in time as the flames begins to surround him. He can only stand there, wallowing in the realisation that... he's useless. Knowing that no matter what kind of air of bravado he puts on, no matter how much guts he has... he ultimate is just a child who will never grow up. Saki's purpose for this test... just like Kosuke who refuses to get serious in a fight, so two will Isamu never be the serious fighter he dreams he is. Takeshi, despite his bumbling and idiotic nature is able to step up to the plate and become an unsuspecting force to be reckoned with... but they can't. Isamu sheds a tear of frustration as he is swallowed by the flames.

"Oops, i guess I kinda went overboard..." Takeshi admits, scratching the back of his head. "Got a little caught up in teaching a lesson... then again, it's only a simulation, so he shouldn't... be... how is he still standing?"

The smoke clears, as Isamu remains on his feet, breathing heavily... and coated in the armour of The Golden Champion. His arms are thrown up, having taken the full brunt of Takeshi's most powerful attack.

"Huh... would you look at that?" Takeshi smiles. "You actually managed to transform at will. If you hadn't, you would have been completely blown away by my attack!"

"... I'm not strong."

"Huh?" Takeshi mutters.

"I'm not strong," Isamu groans through heavy, exhausted breathes. "I know that... I've never been. Being a hero to me... it's never been about strength. It... it's about the drive. The drive to help people, to be a figure of hope! To inspire others! My meaning in life... it's to be a true hero! But... I'm not strong. And... maybe I never will be... BUT I'LL KEEP TRYING!"

Takeshi pauses, tilts his head to the side, and smiles. "That's what I want to hear. Although... you pulled your armour up too late, didn't you? You're still standing, but I can tell when someone's too hurt to even move."

"It feels like my organs are failing."

"Yeah... it'll do that," Takeshi admits. "Well... it seems like my lesson has motivated you right! I forfeit!"

"You can't forfeit..." Kosuke explains as he picks himself up off the ground. "You're the test. The test can't give up."

"Oh..." Takeshi mutters, before smiling again. "Then I declare this a success!"

"Success conditions were beating you in a fight," Kosuke explains. "By Saki's rules, we failed."

"Oh..." Takeshi mutters. "Welp, then you failed. But... I think this failure is really a success in disguise!"

Takeshi throws the thumbs up as Kosuke lets out a sigh. Isamu chuckles and throws a thumbs up as well, before promptly collapsing.
>>
Kosuke rushes to Isamu side to help him up. "Yo, you okay?"

"No..." Isamu sighs. "But this pain, this failure... it's a blessing."

"Not what I'd call it..."

Isamu nods. "... The legendary hero Isamu Iori is still a work in progress. I see that now. If I wish to be the hero I've always aspired to be... then I have to work. I have to get stronger... I have to grow even more."

"Well... do you mind me joining you in that?" Kosuke asks.

Isamu smirks. "Ah, did my noble speech inspire you too to better yourself in the face of struggles, and now you want to-"

"Nah, I don't want to do anything," Kosuke interrupts. "But... I've got people I need to fight for now. Sometimes, the hard work might be actually worth it."

Isamu smiles. "Spoken like a true hero."

"Nope. Stop that."

Isamu and Kosuke: Failure... technically.

"Wow..." Akemi mutters. "Takeshi sure is strong..."

"I... I wasn't expecting that," you admit. "I hope Isamu's okay... can't imagine his pride is doing very well..."

You shake it off as you turn to your notes on the trial.

While they didn't manage to take down Takeshi... in fact, they didn't even come close. But your main concern is that Isamu and Kosuke wouldn't push themselves in battle, but they've shown that drive here today. It'll take some work to keep them pushing further and bettering themselves, but just setting them on that path can be considered a major success.

"More!" Akemi demands, while grilling up a hot-dog on a barbecue grill you didn't notice her bringing it. "More trials for the trial gods!"

"What?"

"I don't know!" Akemi giggles. "The grill fumes are making me dizzy!"

Next up on the list... Sora and Ken. This should be interesting.

>Sora and Ken's trial

"Umm..." Ken points out, as Sora finds a wall to sit against and meditate. "Shouldn't you be focused on the trial."

Sora closes his remaining eye and lets out a small hum. "Ken, my friend... I have no need to engage in such a trial."

"What, you think you've got nothing to learn?" Ken asks.

"Of course not," Sora explains. "We all have much to learn. But I do not believe anything can be learned from violence. What purpose is there in us to turn our weapons against each-other? Such petty things... fighting your allies is no way to learn."

"So you're just going to leave me to fight this trial myself?"

Sora shakes his head. "I am not forcing anything of anyone. You are welcome to join me and clear your thoughts of all disturbances. What's been on your mind, friend? What is weighing on-"

"Hey cut that out, you're in the middle of a trial here!" Yasutake yells as he slings his blade over his shoulder. "Come on, I'm itching for a fight! Bring it to me!"

Ken lets out a sigh, realising he will likely have to do this on his own.

Ken launches himself forward, Rod in hand, ready to engage Yasutake in battle. He lunges forward and clashes his weapon with Yasutake's blade, as the two go back and forth in trading and deflecting blows. Yasutake kicks Ken in the gut, sending him back, before leaping through the air and spinning, making a large crash in the ground where he lands. Ken is just able able to avoid the smashing attack, but the rocks and rubble fly out to scratch and cut his skin. Yasutake leaps again, this time straight over Ken, kicking him in the back of the head as Yasutake leaps directly towards Sora, ready to drive his sword through him.

Sora springs up and dodges at the last second, before summoning a staff of his own. "It seems I'm being given no choice in the matter," Sora sighs.

"That's right!" Yasutake yells. "It's my job to make sure you actually fight for yourself instead of being a peaceful pansy!"

"You're not supposed to announce what the test is!" Ken protests. "Besides, I've never had trouble engaging in a fight!"

"Yeah, but Kobashi-kun says you're hesitant to fight your hardest, always attempting to subdue but never willing to risk injuring an opponent."

"I..." Ken mutters. "I just don't want to see anyone hurt... that's not justice."

"I see," Sora nods. "So the issue at hand is my unwillingness to fight outside of self-defence, and your unwillingness to go all out. Noble ideas in theory, though even I can concede how impractical our moral code is in certain situations."

Yasutake grunts. "Yeah, there's no point in clinging to your morals if your hesitance to fight gets innocent people killed!"

"Cut that out!" Ken yells. "We were coming to that conclusion ourselves!"

Sora lets out a sigh. "Well, we shouldn't waste time trading words. Let us commit to this trial."

Ken nods. "Any plans?"

"In my meditation, I felt a trace of plant life burrowed beneath the concrete," Sora explains. "With magic, I can control said plant life to spring up and subdue our opponent."

"I could also go for an attack I've been working on," Ken explains. "It's a wave of energy released from my body. It could take him down, but I can only try it once, and I'll need to charge up. You'd have to keep him at bay while I do that."

"I see..."

Sora closes his eye and focuses, holding his hand out over the earth beneath him. "When faced with no other choice... I will fight. NATURE'S POWER!"

The ground beneath Yasutake begins to crack, as vines from below burst up from the ground. The begin to surround the warrior from Class 3, but unfortunately, Yasutake is able to cut away the vines and charge towards Sora. Ken jumps in the path, only to get knocked back by Yasutake, as Sora suffers the same fate, receiving a kick to the face that sends him flying.

"Hmm... it was unwise to try to summon from the earth below," Sora admits. "It took too much effort, so the vines moved too slow to catch him."

"Well, we can consider that a learning experience," Ken smirks, rubbing his cut lip. "We just need to take this from a different-"

"God, you pansies just keep talking, don't you?!" Yasutake screams. "Get busy fighting or get busy losing! Ugh, who do you think I am, that you can just ignore me! I am YASUTAKE OKIDATA, the warrior of Class 3-"

"Stop being so dramatic!" Ken yells. "This isn't your trial!"

"Oh yeah?" Yasutake smirks. "Well, let's see how you like my ultimate attack!"

Yasutake leaps into the air... and begins to curl up into a ball. With the blade of his sword poking out from this ball, he spins in the air. "Try this on for size! DEATH SPHERE!"

"That... is so dumb," Ken notes, as Yasutake comes spinning at them in ball form.

Yasutake comes spinning at Ken, who manages to duck out of the way at the last possible second. Yasutake crashes into the ground, yet remains spinning in his ball form, bouncing to the side and tailing after Ken again.

"Hey, how come he's only coming after me?" Ken protests, as Yasutake begins to catch up with him... only for a bunch of vines to to wrap around the sphere, slowing it's progress and stopping it.

"It seems you were ignoring me," Sora notes with a wry smile. "I never stopped commanding those plants, allowing me to gather them en masse to stop you."

Yastuake rolls out of his sphere form and lands on his feet with a sigh. "Well good for you monk, you passed your part of the test... but I'm really disappointed in you, Tajiri-kun."

"Huh?" Ken raises an eyebrow. "Why me?"

"I was real pumped when I heard I was being matched against you!" Yasutake explains. "You're supposed to be one of the toughest in your class, some big hero of justice, so I thought you'd be putting up a fight! But no, you're just running away and acting all defensive, what's up with that?"

"Well, I just don't like fighting when it's not necessary," Ken explains, "I don't want to hurt an innocent-"

"If you're that much of a wuss then I don't see why you're such a big deal," Yasutake yawns. "If you're not willing to hit your opponent with all you've got, then you're no fighter at all. You're just a wimp."

Ken grimaces and clenches his fist. "Don't insult me... I'll show you... I'll show you my heroic potential!"

"Your heroic what?" Yasutake ponders. "What's that supposed to mean-"

"TAKE THIS!" Ken yells.

"I'll show you..." Ken mutters. "I'm not some loser... some kid... the spirit of Justice burns bright within me! I'll show you, King Thunder!"

"K-King Thunder?" Yasutake nervously asks. "Uhh, you might be getting a little carried awa-"

"TAKE THIS! JUSTICE WAAAAAAAAAVE!"

Ken unleashes his energy on the battlefield, letting loose upon the unsuspecting Yasutake, who is enveloped in the energy wave before even having time to prepare.

When the dust settles, Yasunari is lying out cold, as Ken collapses onto the floor.

"I... I did it..." Ken smiles proudly, face first in the concrete.

Sora shakes his head. "But you gave up all of your energy to do so, and you fell at the same time. At best, this trial has ended in a draw..."

"Nope..." Ken replies. "You're still standing Sora. And... and as long as my allies are still standing, that's all that matters."

"I see..." Sora nods, as he helps Ken to his feet. "I suppose this is my fault, I did leave a lot of the burden on your shoulders."

"Please, you saved me from his attack," Ken replies. "It's thanks to you I even got the chance to attack..."

Sora smiles. "Ken, my friend... would you like to join me for a spot of meditation later? I think I'd like to get to the bottom of your hesitation..."

"Thanks, but no thanks," Ken replies. "I know exactly what my problem is..."

Ken and Sora... successful.

"Huh..." Akemi mumbles while chowing on a hot dog. "So Ken and Sora are scared to go all out, so you put them against an aggressive guy who'd force them to be more forceful? That's pretty smart!"

You nod. "Well, I tried my best to optimize these pairings for all involved," you explain. "Ken was able to bring out his power... though his motivations behind doing so may be a cause for concern..."

Akemi swallows down her food before turning to you. "So why am I your partner? Is it because you have some super cool special move the two of us can do together?"

>Well, I wanted to see how you'd fare in a combat environment when you weren't able to fill a support role

>Maybe, you'll just have to see. I can't give away the purpose of the test just yet.

"Aww..." Akemi pouts. "Oh well! I just finished work on our team flag!"

"W-when did you start work on them?!" you ask in shock.

Akemi shrugs and simply waves a tiny red and blue flag with a mecha-dragon emblazoned upon it, as you let out a sigh. Akemi is certainly an odd one, it'll be interesting to see her as your partner soon. Of course, you're going last, and there's still plenty of your class still to go.

You look through your notes so far. There's been a certain rumbling within Class 2... with all the adversity you've overcome as a group and all the strides you've made... you're honestly on track to becoming the greatest class in the history of the academy. And yet... there's still so many areas for improvement.

"Expending all of your energy at once is hardly a passable strategy," a voice from behind you point out. You turn around, to see a dazzling and stylish red-haired man standing behind you, watching the monitors. You recognise him instantly as a graduate of the school, none other than Keiji Ki.

"K-Keiji-senpai!" you exclaim. "Why are you here?"

"Well, if it isn't Kobashi-kun and Kemi-chan," Keiji smirks. "I would say that the two of you have grown since your freshman year, but you seem about the same size you were when I left... but certainly not the same strength."

"We've been working hard," you beam proudly.

Keiji nods, placing his hand in his pocket. "I can see that... but I know you can work harder."

"W-what?"

"Teams of two, allowing the teachers and upperclassmen to go easy," Keiji yawns. "What a joke. I had thought the granddaughter of Wei Kobashi would be more strict and efficient."

You shake your head. "I can't push them too hard," you mutter. "They're my friends-"

"Your relationship to them doesn't change their roles as soldiers," Keiji explains. "And a weak soldier is a dead soldier. Ahh... but I'm raining on your parade. It's not my place to make comment. Do you mind me observing in the back?"

"Umm... go ahead," you reply.

"Excellent," Keiji nods, as he moves to the corner of the room.

You turn your attention to the monitor, ready to continue with the trials... but you can't escape the pair of burning eyes wearing down on the back of your neck... and just like that, the doubt sets in.

That'll be all for tonight! Thanks for playing, we'll be continuing tomorrow!

"Chihiro, look out!"

Well into their trial, Nanami tackles Chihiro out of the way of automatic crossbow fire, as Lilo playfully skips along, her two opponents hiding behind a wall.

"Heavens, she is a fast one..." Chihiro mumbles.

"Aye..." Nanami grumbles, peeking around the corner. "But never fret! You captain is here, and I'll be able to find us a way out of this! Umm.... umm... well, how about-"

"Are you two girls done hiding yet?" Lilo asks, letting out a sigh. "Honestly, I'd much rather we ended this game and I could lay back and watch my soap opera. I must say that Ran Takabe just might be the best model in Japan!"

"What?!" Chihiro exclaims, popping out from behind the corner. "Everyone knows that Kanako Iwatani is positively... uh oh."

"Haha!" Lilo smirks. "I knew that'd lure you out! Now, take this! ARROW RAIN!"

Lilo lets loose with her attack, as a storm of arrows rains down upon Chihiro and Nanami, taking the two by surprise and taking them both down before they even have time to react.

"A-ha! I did it!" Lilo bounces and pumps her fist in celebration, despite not passing anything.

After the bout, Nanami falls to her knees and lets out a sigh. "That was... disappointing..."

"Oh dearie..." Chihiro smiles warmly, hunkering down next to her. "Don't take this loss so harshly... it was my fault anyway."

Nanami sighs. "It's okay, but... I kinda wanted to impress this time. So... you're a big fan of that Kanako Iwatani, huh?"

Chihiro smirks. "Oh, you wouldn't believe it! She actually called me up and asked me to intern for her! Could you imagine? Myself, a model in training!"

Nanami laughs. "I think you'd be pretty great at it."

"Why thank you! Now come captain, let's clear that frown away with some tea!"

Nanami and Chihiro: Failure.

"Oh, I wanted to see them win!" Akemi bemoans.

"Well, the results played into my initial assessment at least," you explain. "Nanami and Chihiro are incredibly talented. In terms of combat prowess, they're the two most underrated in the class... but they're held back by their tendency to get distracted by material things. Still, they managed to avoid Lilo's offence for a good while, which is impressive."

Keiji crosses his arms, leaning against the wall. "Kobashi-kun, a failure is a failure. This isn't a written exam, there are no exact grades. It's a simulation of a life or death situation... there are no almost passes. Were your friends to die by a demon there now, would you have tried to spin it that they almost survived?"

"Oh..." you mutter. "I guess not..."

"Just making an observation," Keiji points out. "Feel free to ignore it if you think I'm wrong."

You look thorough your notes, and make note of the next pair to come. "Sayeka and Nariko are up next."

>Sayeka and Nariko's Trial

"Well, I suppose I must apologise in advance," Sayeka admits with a wry smile. "I suppose you consider it terrible luck to be matched with someone in my condition. I'm more likely to be a burden than to be much help."

"Actually, I don't mind," Nariko smiles. "Having someone as calm and collected as you... it might be good for me. So... you can see the future. Who's our oppon-"

Sayeka pushes Nariko out of the way, and jumps to the side herself in a clumsy manner. As Nariko turns to face Sayeka, she sees a thin, sharp rapier glide past her face.

Nariko lands on her feet, as Kamiko turns to face them. "Oh... I didn't draw blood," Kamiko sighs, staring at her shiny rapier. "How disappointing."

"Are you okay, Sayeka?" Nariko asks, as the blind girl picks herself off the ground.

"Don't worry about me," Sayeka assures her. "I don't want to hold you back."

Nariko nods. "So, why is she our opponent?"

"It seems Saki is aware of the information overload that my visions give me when trying to predict combat manoeuvres... so she's testing to see how I react to an opponent who attacks in wild flurries... and she wants to see if you can keep your composure and control your anger when against a truly vicious opponent."

"Well, would you look at that!" Nariko smiles. "You were worried you wouldn't be useful! Now that we know what to focus on, the rest comes easy!"

"Don't be so sure!" Kamiko snarls as she charges Nariko with her rapier, poking at stabbing at the blue-haired girl who struggle to keep up her defence.

...Yes, that's the point. You put them in these situations and expect them to fail, or pass with issues, then you identify those issues, and work with them to iron out said issues so that when an ACTUAL life or death situation occurs, those issues don't COME UP. That's kinda the entire point of training. I really don't have a clue what he's griping about unless he's just taking out his anger on the younger crop.

Kamiko lunges at Nariko, but Nariko deflects her attack with her daggers, before going for a lunging attack of her own. Kamiko leaps out of the way as well, and the two continue in a quick, vicious exchange of attacks.

As Nariko manages to hold her own against her superior, Sayeka closes her eyes and tries to focus. While Nariko can hold her own, there's little chance that she can defeat a member of Class 3 without any help. As such, Sayeka begins to focus, attempting to predict Kamiko's future attacks.

"Okay, okay..." Sayeka strains. "Next, she's going to... she's going to... ah!"

Sayeka falls to her knees, clutching her head, as her attempts at prediction lead to an information overload... not a surprise considering how fast the two are moving about.

"Sayeka!" Nariko yells in concern, as Kamiko turns her head.

"An easy target!" Kamiko yells, as she turns and lunges towards the distressed Sayeka... only to be caught by Nariko, and slammed directly into the ground below.

"W-wow..." Nariko notes as she turns to check on Sayeka. "I don't usually have that kind of strength in me when I'm not mad. Are you okay?"

"Please, keep your focus of me..." Sayeka groans. "Please, you have a chance at victory. Look what you just did... you were able to harness that inner strength within you while still keeping composure."

"I think that was just a one-off..." Nariko explains. "I don't think I could ever do it proper-"

"Yes, you can..." Sayeka mutters. "It's possible... I've seen it."

"Okay..." Nariko mutters to herself, closing her eyes tight. "I can do this... I can do this... I just have to focus. Channel everything into one punch... r-right? That sounds right, and-"

"Enough talk, have at you!" Kamiko yells, as she lunges towards Nariko yet again, rapier at the ready.

Nariko sighs. "Oh well... here goes nothing. Think angry thoughts, think angry thoughts..."

As Kamiko reaches Nariko, Nariko leans back and channels her energy into her fist, swinging it at Kamiko's face with extreme force and determination. The fist collides hard with Kamiko's face, sending the bloodthirsty member of Class 3 flying, crumbling into a heap along the ground.

Nariko falls back into a seated position, staring at her fist in disbelief.

"I... I..." Nariko mutters.

Sayeka smiles. "I knew you could do it, Nariko. The ability to control your anger, to channel that rage within yourself... I'm proud to say that you were able to-"

"Actually, I don't think I did," Nariko points out.

"Hm?"

"No, I didn't feel any rage coursing through me," Nariko explains. "I... I think I just got a really lucky punch in."

"Oh..." Sayeka pauses. "Well... that's good too. The important thing is that you were able to succeed without losing control of yourself."

"Yeah..." Nariko smiles at you clenched fist with a sense of proud. "Thanks, Sayeka."

Nariko and Sayeka: Successful.

You beam with pride as you watch Nariko and Sayeka on the monitor. While Sayeka wasn't able to stop her vision overload from debilitating her, she never stopped being useful in the fight, keeping Nariko calm and giving her advice throughout. A stunning success for both girls.

"Impressive," Keiji notes. "I must say, you class has proven to be quite capable, Kobashi-kun. That's clear from the sheer number of you still living."

"Thank you senpai," you nod respectfully. "Your praise means a lot."

"Sure does!" Akemi exclaims. "Do you want a hot dog?"

"Hm, well it certainly seems like the two of you are close," Keiji points out. "I feel I'm even detecting a scent of young love in the air."

"Yep!" Akemi smiles. "Saki and Ryoji have been dating for months now! There's the school's number one couple!"

You blush. "Well, maybe not number one..."

Keiji smirks, twirling his hair. "I see... this place certainly has changed since I left it. Though it does bring me to my next question... why is it that Saki Kobashi, the head of class 2, is embroiled in a romance with... a demon?"

You pause. What did he just say?

"W-what?" you gasps. "H-he's not a... how did you..."

"Your response confirms my suspicions," Keiji smirks. "I've done my research on the matter, and I can recognise a demon when I see one... and when I saw your friend on the television, it made me very curious..."

"He's not a demon, he's a person!" you maintain.

Keiji shakes his head. "Of course, I'm certain there's some distinction that I'm missing... oh, is that the time? I honestly must get going. It was nice to be a fly on the wall during your class trials."

"W-wait!" you call out, but it's too late as Keiji exists the room in a hurry. "How did he know that...?"

"Do you think he'll want to hurt Ryoji?" Akemi asks with a tone of concern.

You shake your head. "No, he's too calm for that to be the case. Besides, we can trust Keiji senpai..."

>Hiro and Akira's trial

"Hey pipsqueak, catch!" Taka yells as he grapples Akira and tosses her towards the smaller Hiro. Hiro ducks out of the way and moves to tend to Akira's wounds as she lands in a crumpled heap on the ground.

"Are you okay?" He asks. "I'll fix you up!"

Akira grunts. "I appreciate it... but I'm not going to beat him on my own."

"I know..." Hiro sighs.

"It's clear that Saki wanted me up against an opponent who wouldn't go easy on me because of my arm," Akira explains. "And someone who will force you to defend yourself."

"Hmm..." Hiro mumbles, unsure. "I don't know how much help I can be. Even moving past my pacifism, I'm not very strong. There wouldn't be anything I could do to hurt him..."

Akira pauses. "Maybe there are ways to fight without hurting someone."

"Hey, if you ain't dead then you should be fighting!" Taka protests, as Akira lets out an annoyed sigh.

Akira runs out to tackle Taka, though the big man catches her in mid-tackle, as the two begin to vigorously wrestle, fighting for control like two dogs fighting over a bone. Hiro lets out a nervous hum, hoping for Akira to succeed under his breath. Taka takes Akira down with a hip toss, then spies Hiro in the distance.

"Heh, if you'll excuse me," Taka smirks. "Hey pipsqueak! Get ready to die!"

Hiro lets out a terrified "Eep!" as Taka lunges towards him, moving like a freight train. Without thinking, Hiro shuts his eyes and holds out his hands to defend himself.

"What the hell?"

When Hiro opens his eyes again, he sees Taka with his fist trapped inside Hiro's forcefield. "Gragh!" Taka growls in anger, trying to pull his arm free. "Since when could you do that?!"

"ROCKET PUUUUUUUUUUUNCH!" Akira exclaims, as her mechanical fist goes flying at a high speed into Taka's face, the sheer force of it knocking him out.

Hiro releases his bubble around Taka, as the second-in-command of Class 3 falls back, defeated.

"Looks like you're both full of surprises..." Taka smirks, as he picks himself up, noting Akira re-attach her arm. "That's a new trick. Couldn't do that when you had a real arm."

"Yes, I'm truly blessed," Akira rolls her eyes. "Looks like we beat you."

"Sure, after I went easy on you-"

"You didn't do that," Akira interrupts.

Taka chuckles and pokes Akira on the forehead. "I swear Blue, what are you going to do after a graduate? You'll be lost without me!"

"I'm sure I'll manage," Akira banters back, a small smile forming on her face.

Taka gives her a light punch on the arm. "Like hell you would! Now come on, let's get some lunch."

"Would you like to come, Hiro?" Akira asks the boy staring at his own hands in disbelief.

"O-oh, uhh... sure!" Hiro smiles, ignoring his powers for now.

Hiro and Akira: Successful.

"Only one more trial before the two of us," you tell Akemi with a smile.

Akemi peers at the screen in thought. "Hmm, the trajectory was a little off when the rocket punch went off, I'll have to re-calibrate it when I get the chance..."

It's odd hearing Akemi actually talk seriously about something, even in tiny mutters about mechanics. You have to admit, it really unnerves you.

Akemi snaps out of it and turns to you with a smile. "Oh, sorry! Who's next?"

"Akio and Reiji," you reply. "This... this could be a disaster."

>Akio & Reiji's trial

"Heh, I can't believe this..." Akio mutters with a smirk. "Saki actually made me the only one without a partner, huh? Well... looks like I've got quite the challenge ahead of me. Just the way I like it-"

"You have a partner, I'm standing right here," Reiji explains.

"Gah!" Akio jumps, startled. "Who the hell are you? Where did you come from?"

"You... you really didn't notice me here?" Reiji asks, adjusting his glasses. "Were you just talking to yourself?"

Akio laughs. "Of course! Doesn't everyone announce their feelings out loud when they're alone?"

"I don't."

"Well, then you've got a lot to learn, new guy!"

Reiji's eye twitches. "I'm not new! I've been in your class this whole time! I'm Reiji! Reiji Yasukawa!"

"Reiji..." Akio mutters, thinking over the name. "Yasu... wait a minute..."

"Ah, you finally recognise-"

"You're that guy with that big fan club!" Akio exclaims. "Who do hell do you think you are, muscling in on my spotlight? Come on, man! Everyone knows I'm the star of the show!"

"I... I..." Reiji grimaces, before letting out a defeated sigh. "I hate you."

"Nephew, you know it's not nice to insult your classmates like that."

Upon hearing that voice, Akio's smirk turn to a wide grin. "Oh yes... exactly what I wanted."

"Akihito-sensei..." Reiji mutters. "This will be a true challenge..."

Akihito claps his hands as he stands before the two of them. "This is the kind of challenge you were looking for, right nephew? Then this is what you'll get."

"Oh yes, my blood is pumping!" Akio exclaims. "I'm gonna do it!"

"UNCLE!" Akio yells as he rushes forward, his massive spear gripped tight. Akihito nods with a smirk as he readies his sword.

Akio presses his spear forward, breaking through Akihito's defences... and piercing right through the teacher. Of course, there is no blood, no wound, no anything... as Akihito simply disappears from view.

"Akio, look out!"

Akhito pops out of nowhere, now attacking Akio from behind with his blade... only for Akio to casually swing his spear behind him, blocking the blade without looking.

"I'm not as dumb as you think," Akio smirks, turning his head back to face his shocked and impressed uncle. "Come on, uncle. Do you honestly think I don't know about your Shadow Step technique?"

Akio turns his head to Reiji, who is standing cautiously at the ready. "Hey, my uncle-"

"I've studied it before," Reiji explains. "I've even seen it in action. Akihito's shadow step technique, a magic manoeuvre he spent years perfecting... allows him to transport himself from one shaded area to another, even leaving an afterimage in the place he moves from-"

"What are you doing?" Akio asks. "Everyone here knows that!"

Reiji adjusts his glasses. "Doesn't everyone remind themselves of information out loud once it becomes relevant to the situation at hand?"

"I don't!" Akio yells.

"Well, when was the last time you thought anything over?"

"Good point!" Akio exclaims, as he pushes his uncle back. He charges at Akihito, but only manages to fall into another afterimage. "Dammit..." Akio mutters. "The boss must know about Akihito's technique as well. Even in a simulation with an artificial sun, this place is still reflecting an accurate time of day. She scheduled us later in the day, and now the battleground is covered in shade."

"There's no way we'll catch him in these conditions," Reiji points out. "We have to bring more light to the area."

Akio nods. "You're right... you're not half bad, nerd."

"W-was calling me a nerd really necessary-"

"Always, yes."

Hmm so the simulation battlefield counts as shaded because the area IRL is shaded, and that was a 92 roll to destroy buildings (IRL) to remove the shade...

I see no possible repercussions from this whatsoever.

I prefer my version, not least because it would mean Saki effectively commiting the ultimate act of delinquency by destroying school property, since this whole escapade is her idea she'd be responsible for any damage resulting from it.

I'm not sure if Ryoji would be proud or miffed that she one-upped anything he's ever done so greatly.

"Distract my uncle for now," Akio smirks.

Reiji raises an eyebrow. "Hm? You have an idea."

"Kind of," Akio nods. "Just keep him busy a sec."

Reiji nods and rushes into battle with Akihito. He won't fare well, but that doesn't matter. Akio clenches his spear tight as he looks to the buildings around him. "Time to get a little light here."

Akio leaps through the air, the force of his legs launching him like a cannonball straight through one of the derelict buildings in the area, then another. Akio soars, flying and tearing through every obstacle in his path as he readies up his attack.

"What's this?" Akihito mutters, as he feels the light of the sun blinding his eyes suddenly. He knocks Reiji back and shield his eyes, as Akio stands atop the rubble of one of the buildings, proudly announcing his presence.

"Uncle, you shouldn't have agreed to face me... you may be one of the most powerful humans around, but that just makes you another milestone in my path to becoming the best. No matter your power, I have prepared my whole life to combat you and defeat you! You have no chance! DEEEEEEEEEEP..."

"Oh dear..." Akihito mutters, readying himself.

"IMPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACT!"

Akio launches himself from the pile of rubble, flying high into the sky, before coming down with tremendous fury upon his uncle. Akihito draws his sword to defend himself, but with no shade to turn to, he has no choice but to take the brunt of the attack, without any means of dodging. He strains, holding his sword up against Akio's Deep Impact, even managing to hold the attack off better than anyone you've seen thus far... but ultimately the force of the attack is too much, as Akio breaks through his uncles defences, sending Akihito flying, falling into a heap.

"Incredible..." Akihito mutters, impressed. "I never thought you would be able to..."

Akio shakes his head as he stands over his defeated uncle. "If I didn't know your abilities going in, I never would have stood a chance against you. I've been preparing a battle strategy against you for years, and that's what gave me the advantage."

"I never even knew you studied my abilities..." Akihito mutters. "I knew you idolised Wei Kobashi, and Kankuro Asai, and even Naoaki to an extent, but-"

"-What? You didn't think I'd idolise my favourite uncle?" Akio chuckles. "Get over yourself, man!"

Akihito smiles and lets out a small laugh. "I suppose I should. Congratulations on proving your strength Akio... that was amazing. A shame you failed the trial, though."

"Yeah, I-huh?"

"You moron..." Reiji sighs. "This is a simulation of a real battlefield we could find ourselves in. A cityscape like this, that could be filled with innocent people, and you didn't hesitate to destroy every single building?"

"W-what?!" Akio exclaims. "Saki didn't mention that as a rule!"

"I didn't think she'd need too," Reiji places his hand to his forehead. "If I knew that's what you were planning, I would have stopped you..."

"Well... my bad!" Akio admits. "Sorry for ruining the trial for you, I guess..."

Reiji shakes his head. "I suppose I can't be mad. If you impress like that in public, you could steal my fanbase."

"You mean MY fanbase in waiting!" Akio points out.

"Good. I don't want them."

Akio & Reiji: Failure.

"Well, I suppose I could have been more clear on the rules..." you admit, though it never crossed your mind that anyone would even think to destroy the battlefield right off the bat.

Akemi nods. "So I can't use all of my explosives? Whew, that was a close one!"

"H-how many explosives did you-actually, I don't want to know. So... we're up next."

"Oh boy, finally!" Akemi exclaims, as she finishes up a burger, the apparent last of her food. She timed her worryingly large meal well. "Let's do it! Team Mecha Dragons! Are you ready?"

Okay, so deadass, if it's Wei or Keiji, we lame it out. Don't go for overwhelming power or a quick end, just draw the fight out as long as possible. Why? Tactical superiority- if this IS supposed to be a simulation of a real situation of sorts, then chances are you have some sort of objective you're pulling, and in the case of an overwhelming opponent you KNOW you can't or have a markedly low chance of beating, it'd be a waste to just charge in and hope for the best. Do our best to draw the fight out, dictate terms of engagement- hit and run, guerrilla tactics, all that shit. Besides, unless worse comes to worse, we'll have SOME sort of backup, and keeping a major force multiplier tied up gives any other allied forces in the area time to do their shit.

Combat is more than brute force.

Akemi gives a reassuring thumbs up. "Oh yeah! You even almost sounded cool! We're gonna beat this test, and you're gonna show how strong you are, and then you won't be as tired anymore!"

"Yeah!" you smile, before pausing. "Wait, what?"

Akemi shrugs. "You've been looking really tired these last few days. Maybe if you pass this trial, you'll know you can take it easy, and you can give yourself some rest again! Or maybe you just can't get to sleep at night... if that's the case, I built a machine that reads you bedtime stories in my voice, would that help?"

"I'm fine," you assure Akemi. "I've just been... busy. You don't need to worry about me."

"Okay then..." Akemi replies, but you can still hear a tone of concern in her voice. That's just Akemi you suppose, for as carefree as she is, she's full of concern for her friends. It's her most admirable quality in your view.

You and Akemi make your way to the simulation room, where you see a certain red-haired senpai standing in wait.

"A-ah, Keiji-senpai!" You bow respectfully, then nudge Akemi on the shoulder to remind her to do the same, as she was distracted by a spec of dust floating by her eyes.

"No need to be so formal," Keiji chuckles. "I must say, I am curious to see how the new leader of Class 2 fights. I've been hearing so much about your improvements lately that I just have to see it in person. Do you mind if I stand by and watch your trial."

"I... I don't see why not," you smile, as Keiji gives you a knowing nod.

"Excellent," Keiji replies. "Oh... and I'm sure you'll want to speak to me later about Ryoji, but do not let your mind get clouded by other thoughts. I want to see you fully focused."

"R-right!" you reply, as you and Akemi both step into the simulation room.

The buildings have been regenerated after Akio's previous rampage, as you and Akemi step out into the main street.

"Ooh, so who do we have?" Akemi asks.

You turn to her. "Well, there's only one person left out of the trials. We're facing-"

As you speak, a bundle of tumbleweed rolls past you on the street.

"Uh... h-how did that get here?" you ask. Your question is punctuated by a pistol bullet whizzing right by your head, forcing you to instinctively throw up your shield.

"Hmm... is it Shinji?" Akemi asks. "Wait, we saw him... oh, Tekina! Wait..."

"Akemi, get ready!" you yell. "Here comes our cowboy now!"

"Oh..." Akemi nods, the identity of the trial finally clicking with- "YASUTAKE!"

... Or not.

Maro steps out before you, brandishing his pistol with a rifle slung over his shoulder. "... Saki."

"Maro."

"Maro?!" Akemi gasps in utter shock.

"I see..." Keiji mutters, standing atop one of the buildings, before bursting into excited laughter. "YES!" he exclaims at the top of his lungs. "THE LEADER OF CLASS 3 TAKING ON THE LEADER OF CLASS 2!"

"I'm here too!" Akemi announces with an innocent smile.

"NOW THIS... THIS IS A TRUE CHALLENGE! BEGIN!"

What does he think he is, the announcer?

"So... did you bring that tumbleweed with you, or...?"

The bullets begin firing, and your ultimate challenge begins.

"Maro Kojima... Saki Kobashi..." Keiji snickers. "What a glorious battle!"

"And I'm here too!" Akemi exclaims again, as you tackle her and force her behind cover, holding your shield up to deflect Maro's bullets.

"We need to be focused, Akemi!" you explain as you duck down. "Maro's not going to hesitate with us... he's going to go all out with his full ability. He'll do anything to take us down."

"Ah, explains this smoke grenade he threw!" Akemi smiles, as she holds up said smoke grenade before it goes off in her hand. Your vision now clouded in smoke, you cough and listen out for the sounds of Maro's spurs clacking along the floor. He's getting closer, but you can't see an inch in front of your face... ah, fiddlesticks.

"If I keep my shield up in the direction of the noise..." You mutter to yourself, but it seems that Akemi has other ideas.

"Hiyah!" she exclaims as she clicks a button, and before you know it, the smoke is blown away. Seems Akemi built some sort of powered fan machine to deal with these kinds of attacks.

"Nice work!" you exclaim. "But get down!"

You grab Akemi and pull her down as a bullet whizzes by her ear.

"Like a pair of mice, and Maro's the cat..." Keiji mutters. "I expected a more direct confrontation. Still, it makes sense. Both are cautious fighters."

"If we're lured into the open, Maro will catch us before we even have time to react," You explain. "Even with my shield up, I won't be able to stop every shot in time while he has the advantage."

Maro went on the offensive first, and already it could be the deciding factor in this fight. Like pistols at dawn, he who draws fastest wins... You're gonna have to devise a plan to stop this onslaught before it gets worse.

And now the battle begins proper.

"Akemi," you whisper. "He's coming for our location. How quickly can you set up a trap-"

"Done," Akemi replies, already two steps ahead of you. You can't help but chuckle, for her general air-headedness, she's always been a useful part of the team.

"Okay, let's hide."

You sneak around a second corner, while Akemi has a pair of her turrets standing at the ready.

Maro whistles to himself as he turns the corner, holding up a pair of pistols... only to be met with two turrets that lock onto the cowboy immediately. They begin to fire, and he quickly strafes back, managing to avoid most of the fire, but one bullet manages to graze his arm. He finds a corner of his own to hide behind as the turrets die down.

"We forced him back, but now he has his own cover..." You mutter. "We need to find a way to move onto the counterattack."

Just as you speak, a figure bursts from Maro's cover, and is quickly riddled with bullets from the motion sensing turrets. But it's not Maro... rather, it's his jacket. As the coat is being torn apart by the turrets, Maro burst out from the corner un-targeted, and quickly fires two shots destroying the barrels of each turret, rendering them useless.

"I liked that jacket," maro mutters as he steps up to the turrets, crushing them proper under his boot.

Maro brandishes his pistols as he approaches the direction of yourself and Akemi. "Are you ready to fight now?"

"Nope!" Akemi yells, as she pushes a button on her control panel.

Maro lets out a calm "What?" as he turns to see the wall beside him explodes from a massive detonation. He jumps back shielding his face, with the force of the blast knocking the wind out of him.

"Now!" you exclaim as you and Akemi burst out from behind cover. You charge at Maro while he's staggered. He rises to his feet and points a pistol at you, but you're on him too fast, knocking his hand out of the way with your shield, before targeting him with a punch aimed at his face. He dodges to the side, grabs your wrist and attempts to pull you in and trip you up, but you firmly plant your ground. Using your own strength, you pull him back and toss him back. He lands on his feet and attempts a gunshot within point blanc range, but you get your shield up in time, deflecting the bullet. You hit Maro with a kick that sends him back. He clutches his chest, but doesn't hesitate to make use of the space you've just given him, raising one of his pistols again to you.

"Not so fast!" Akemi yells, using her wrist turret to fire the pistol straight from Maro's hand with expert precision. Even Maro looks shocked at how well your plan paid off, before leaping back to clear more space when he realises he's in trouble.

You nod with pride. "Good work. Thanks to our numbers advantage, we've got Maro on the defensive."

Now's your chance to capitalise, if you allow Maro any time to recover, you'll be in trouble again without a doubt. The leader of Class 3 is far too capable of acting fast and turning these kinds of situations around.

"Hmm, it seems the upperclassman is having some trouble," Keiji smirks. "Now kouhai, I know the numbers aren't to your advantage, but aren't you the best this school has to offer, and so close to graduation! Maybe you just aren't as talented without your team by your side!"

You can tell that Keiji's playful teasing is getting on Maro's nerve, and you figure you can use this to your advantage. You charge towards Maro, holding your shield up and diving shield-first directly through his cover.

"What, are you insane?" Maro asks in regards to your bold tactic. You tumble over him, upside down in mid-air, and thrust your lance towards his chest in response. Maro ducks and rolls to the side to safety, but you manage to catch him by throwing your shield at his knee, debilitating him for the time being.

You land on your feet and push forward again, and Maro moves back, but you see that the pain in his knee has slowed him enough for you to outmanoeuvre him. Maro raises his remaining pistol in retaliation, but you manage to tackle him to the ground moments before he can pull the trigger. You brandish your lance to his throat as you stand victorious over your superior.

"Ah, I see now!" Keiji claps. "The purpose of this trial! The reason for this match-up!"

"Huh?" you ask, turning your attention to Keiji as he stands atop a building.

"Oh, I forgot about that!" Akemi exclaims. "What is it?"

Keiji chuckles. "There isn't one! There was no room for improvement, no room for growth with this team! Kobashi-Kun simply wanted to prove herself against the top of the school. She saw no weakness in her style, nowhere for her to improve, and she certainly didn't care about testing you, Kemi-chan! This decision was one of pure pride and nothing more! Kobashi-kun, I'm disappointing."

"W-what?"

"Am I wrong?" Keiji asks.

"Well..." you mutter, before letting out a sigh. "No... you're not. I was so caught up in my losses in that simulation against Wei... I couldn't look at my style objectively to find holes in it. All I could focus on was proving myself against a strong opponent... and in doing so I neglected helping you train, Akemi... I'm so sorry..."

Akemi smiles. "That's okay! I don't mind helping you get stronger! But shouldn't we be focusing on Maro right now?"

Right, you should be focusing on... oh gosh, where did he go?

"Saki, I didn't expect you to lose your focus," Maro mutters, as you turn your head to see him standing a very safe distance from you and Akemi, his rifle drawn... and the two of you out in the open. "You'll find that to be the biggest mistake you'll ever make."

Hard to argue, you're in a real bad situation right now.

Maro holds his rifle high in one arm, as you feel an intense aura of energy pooling around him. "And now, I'll teach you both an important lesson with this... my ultimate attack."

Maro's... ultimate attack? Oh no...

"GO!" Maro announces in a harsh tone. "STEEL BALL RUN!"

... You're in trouble.

Ultimate attack? You've never seen an ultimate attack from Maro before... what could it possibly be?

All of a sudden, you feel yourself begin to slow. You and the world around you begins to come to a gruelling pace. This is the panic setting in, the moment before disaster... where your brain is given more time to act... but you have nothing. You haven't seen the attack, you have no strategy. You just have to brace yourself and hope this doesn't take you out...

"STEEL BALL RUN!"

Maro fires from his rifle, but no bullet comes out. Instead, out springs a quick gyroscopic steel ball. It whizzes right by your ear and hits the ground behind you. It's casing explodes upon impact, creating a blast which releases... smaller gyroscopic balls, all whizzing off in different directions... all while Maro keeps firing from his rifle. You exhaust yourself dodging and protecting yourself with your shield raised high, but the fruitlessness of your attempts soon sets in. You quickly catch on to the sheer power and danger of this technique. Soon, the entire battlefield will be flooded with these explosive spheres... and you have nowhere to turn.

"AKEMIII! You call out in concern for your friend.

"SAKIIIIII!" she calls out in turn

You vision soon disappears, as does your hearing, as you're caught up in the middle of a series of explosions on all sides. All you see is white, and all you can hear is a sharp ringing.

As you come to, you find yourself face to face with a scratched up and banged up Akemi, barely conscious... and you don't need a mirror to tell you're in likely the same condition.

"Good thing I grabbed you in time..." Akemi smiles weakly with glossed over eyes.

You look behind Akemi, to see that she threw up a metallic barrier behind her. That, coupled with your own shield just about managed to protect the two of you from being completely wiped up. But the parts that did hit you alone were enough to leave you barely able to stand.

"Akemi, I'm sorry..." you mutter. "I was selfish in devising this trial... and now I'm going to lose to someone stronger than me... again."

"Not yet, you aren't!" Akemi reassures you.

"Huh?"

"You're still awake and talking, aren't you?" Akemi explains. "Then... then we can still get stronger! Together!"

"Together..." you mutter, before grinning. "Alright... let's do it. But... we can't last much longer than this. If we have any hope of winning here... we're gonna have to hit Maro with everything we've got... and we've only got one chance at it."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Akemi smiles. "Let's go!"

"Okay, let's do this as a team!" Akemi exclaims.

You burst out with your shield at the ready, as Maro immediately begins to unload with rapid fire upon you. You keep your shield up, deflecting the shots, but it's difficult to do so in your weakened state. You can't hold out for much longer... you're placing all of your bets on Akemi now.

Akemi lets out a battle cry, or more of a battle squeal, as she readies up her jetpack. It takes her off the ground and rocket propels her towards Maro in the blink of an eye, while he's still very much focused on you. Seems the battle between Class leaders has played to your advantage, even Maro got caught up in the idea of you being his biggest threat, and he's forgotten about Akemi entirely.

Akemi whizzes to Maro's side, holding out her largest weapon strapped to her arm, which she seems to have been charging since Maro unleashes Steel Ball Run.

"Take this!" Akemi yells out, a determined tone in her voice that makes you smile. She's so strong willed, and ready to do anything to help you... now that's her most admirable quality.

The barrel of Akemi's weapon glows bright with energy as she readies her ultimate attack. "SUNSHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE-"

"I didn't forget about you," Maro mutters quickly, before holding his free hand up, revealing the smoke grenade in his hand. Akemi doesn't have time to react before it goes off. The two disappear in a cloud of smoke, as you press forward, worried.

"Akemi-" you yell out, before a bullet from the smoke pierces you, stunning you and taking you down.

When the smoke clears, Maro is standing victorious over Akemi, who has been taken down and restrained with rope.

You try to pick yourself up off the ground... but ultimately collapse against with a loud grunt of frustration.

Akemi & Saki: failure.

You find the strength to pick yourself up after the battle, dragging yourself over to Akemi with a forlorn sigh. "I'm sorry, Akemi... I roped you into this with my own selfishness, and now we lost-"

"Did you see that?!" an excited Akemi yells. "I was this close to beating Maro! Maro! It was so cool! Did you see me?!"

... Huh. Well, it seems that Akemi isn't perturbed at all by the loss. Not even a little...

"Most of it," you can't help but smile. "Everything up until the smoke."

"That's okay, I wasn't as cool after that part!" Akemi laughs.

Maro nods in your direction as he unties Akemi. "Good fight, you two."

"Thank you for making the time for us..." you reply with a respectful bow.

"Why wouldn't I?" Maro asks directly. "We're graduating in a matter of months... you're the future of this school. Soon, it'll all be resting on your shoulders."

"Heh, no pressure though, am I right?" you joke nervously.

"No," Maro replies, the joke going over his head. "Lot's of pressure. It's a huge undertaking. But... after today, I'm confident you can handle it."

Keiji approaches, giving a slow clap with a smirk on his face. "Well, that was an interesting battle, Kobashi-kun. How would you rate your performance today?"

>Honestly... pretty well. We worked to the best of our abilities, and we're going to keep working.

>I mean, my performance wasn't anything special... I never would have come close without Akemi.

"No, don't doubt yourself," Keiji mutters.

"Huh?" you asks. You were sure he was going to lecture you on your failures... isn't he?

Keiji shakes his head. "Kobashi-kun, do you honestly believe Kemi-Chan worked all on her own? She's a follower. Every action she took, she wouldn't have done so without a strong leader guiding her every step of the way. That leader was you... and you did so brilliantly."

"I... did?"

Keiji nods. "Yes. You even but aside your selfish attempts to prove yourself, and told your ally to land the final blow. You gave up your pride for the good of the fight... though I must admit I'm relieved you lost. I'm happy to see my kouhai remains the top fighter in the school. It would be embarrassing for him to lose to a pair of underclassmen, no matter how talented."

You give Keiji a respectful bow. "Thank you, Keiji-senpai. Your praise means a lot to me."

"Oh..." Keiji adds, as he leans in closer into a whisper. "And for the record... you need not worry about Ryoji. I bear no ill will to the man, whatever he may be. However... I am very interested in speaking to him in person, whenever he should return."

"Okay... thank you," you nod. "I suppose then I'll be seeing you around?"

"Of course," Keiji smiles. "I still have to look after my sister, after all."

As Keiji wanders off, you help Akemi to her feet, and the two of you walk out the door.

"Yay! Let's celebrate with ice-cream!" Akemi yells, as the two of you wander through the hallways, ready to exit to the courtyard.

You simply let out a sigh. "I don't know... Keiji-senpai's words were re-assuring, but... we still failed. Can I really call myself a good leader when I failed the trial I set for myself? And... what about the others? Did I really help them? Or was all this just an excuse to work out my own frustrations? I... I feel like I put myself over the entire class, and... I..."

"I wouldn't worry about the others if I were you!" Akemi smiles as you step out to the courtyard. "Look!"

You look out over the courtyard, and you can't believe your eyes. Every single member of Class 2 is out there... and they're all training. Even after the rigorous trials earlier, they're still giving it their all.

"Come on, Isamu!" Rei yells as the two of them do push-ups side-by-side. "So close to 2000! Don't give up!"

"I... I won't lose!" Akemi exclaims. "For you Miss Arisato, I will keep pushing until I become the greatest hero!"

"Focus on the bubbles," Hikaru explains to Akio as she summons a bunch before him. "Hit the darker shaded ones and avoid the rest. That oughtta work out your accuracy."

"My accuracy is fine!" Akio protests.

"Fine then, your destructive tendencies."

"That's worse!"

"Focus my anger... focus my anger..." Nariko mutters with her eyes closed. "Okay... Hiro, get ready for this! You better block every attack!"

"Okay!" Hiro exclaims, with his shields at the ready.

You laugh. "They're all... working hard. W-why?"

"Because you inspired them to!" Akemi smiles.

"Heh... I guess I did..." you mutter with a smile. "Come on, Akemi... let's grab lunch."

As you walk through the courtyard, gazing at the hard work of you class, you make note not to fall behind. After resting and recovering for a moment, you and Akemi will join them.

Your grin widens and widens, and you even find yourself wiping a tear of pride from your eye. Dangit... this is the best class ever.

Personal fave always gonna go to ma boy Isamu, im a sucker for that shonen spirit.

Flows really improved, a lot of the fights i could really like see in my mind as actual anime fight scenes.

My favorite fights were Satomi and Hikaru's for that sweet new teamwork and Saki and Akemi's fight were Akemi showed that she can be quite useful in battle if necessary
As for the best ULTIMATE ATTACK is Takeshi's obviously.
