You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

"Honestly, what am I going to do with you two?" Dorothea sighed

You had been hastily recalled to the Pacifica, where you were now sitting in Dorothea's real office. You note that unlike her previous offices, this one was much more well furnished. Though she didn't completely ditch the standard military spartan aesthetic, you could see quite a few framed pictures of her and other individuals. Perhaps classmates or colleagues. There were also pictures of ships, perhaps significant to her past or merely there for decoration.

Shelves lined the walls as well, holding all sorts of books and ship models, both the space and ocean borne types. You also noticed a much larger and more well stock alcohol locker, which you suspect the Admiral made great use of.

"I thought that you'd rein in Amy's rebellious tendencies, not enable them." Dorothea continues, rubbing her forehead in frustration. "Going on absence without leave with her in the middle of a public function? You're lucky Karla managed to keep it quiet. The security and political ramifications if such news got out would have been devastating to the Fleet."

Dorothea sighs again, her eyes darting briefly back to the rum locker before focusing back on you.

"Well, what do you have to say about yourself, Captain?"

>Be firm. Amy's a kid, not a product.

Bottom line, Amy isn't going to be the idol the Admiral wishes she would be. Amy simply will not allow herself to be shoved into that role; she's too strong-willed.

Buuuut, we can at least mediate a little bit. Give Amy a bit of lead, and she'll probably be a lot more cooperative in the long run. An idol with crappy morale is no good to anyone, after all.

"If you want me to have some measure of control over her, than I need to get her to trust me." You tell Dorothea calmly. "Speaking rankly, ma'am, but it seems what you're doing is only antagonizing her towards you."

"You do not have to remind me of that." Dorothea sighs, all her anger apparently just draining out of her, leaving only a tired shell. "I sympathize with her, I really do, but what she's doing is important for the Fleet and for the sector."

"She might have a different opinion on that." You point out, and then narrow your eyes. "I'm pretty sure Lara told you this already too, but we did catch sight of some suspicious person following Amy around."

"I'm aware." Dorothea nods, glancing at her computer screen. "Someone slipped in with the catering staff. We're trying to track his movements through the cameras, but that's base security's problem."

"So what's going to happen now?" You ask.

"Considering this is a first offense... nothing." Dorothea frowns. "But I would appreciate it if you try to limit these... 'adventures' with Amy. Or at the very least inform me."

"I'll keep that in mind." You nod.

There's then an awkward pause. Normally, this is where Dorothea would dismiss you, but it seems like she's hesitating, as if there was something else she wanted to talk about but wasn't sure if it was proper in this situation.

"Is there anything else you want to talk about, ma'am?" You ask politely.

"I'm just wondering..." Dorothea sighs. "How do you do it? Amy doesn't follow a single order I give her, yet she follows you around like a puppy. I just don't understand."

"I suppose because I treat her for what she is. A kid." You shrug.

"Being a kid is exactly the reason why she won't follow orders." Dorothea groans. "I just can't understand her."

"Sure you do, you probably just forgot." You shrug. "We were all young once."

"Now you're just making us both sound old." Dorothea retorts.

"Shit, I did." You chuckle. "Still, there had to be a time where you had your own little rebellious phase."

"No, no I did not." Dorothea shakes her head adamantly.

"Hey, I promised to tell you the rest of my story, right? How about we trade?" You grin.

Dorothea pauses for a few brief seconds.

"All right, fine. It's a deal." Dorothea smiles slightly as she turns to the rum locker, pulling out a rather old looking bottle and pouring two glasses. "I do admit, I've very curious as to how you did that."

"As it turns out, there was a big flaw in VF-171 canopies I took advantage of." You explain.

"What?" Dorothea's eyes widen in shock. "How could something like that happen!?"

"It's a bit of a long story, but the basic gist of it was that we got intel that one of General Galaxy's suppliers was deliberately manufacturing faulty canopies to cut costs. Me and my guys were part of the task force sent in to raid their HQ for evidence."

"Surely something like this should have been made public?" Dorothea blinks. "That's something that should have called for a fleetwide recall!"

"Problem is, the guys behind it did a good job covering their tracks. We couldn't tell apart the good shipments from the bad ones, and NUNS was not about to ground the entire Valkyrie fleet over it. It would cause a huge scandal and destroy readiness."

"So... they just let it slide." Dorothea paled.

"Pretty much." You shrug. "They figured that they'd just quietly rotate out all the canopies with fresh ones during each Valkyrie's overhaul cycle, and it wasn't a problem in the newer builds so they just never got around to it."

"And you just let it all happen?" Dorothea looks at you in shock.

"I was a grunt back then. What could I do?" You shrug. "I'm sure you had to take orders from on high you didn't agree with."

You notice Dorothea's expression darken for a moment before refocusing.

"That's... quite the story." She coughs. "I suppose we should be glad we've already started phasing the Nightmares out."

"Yeah, but I don't envy those poor CDF pilots who will inherit them." You shrug. "And uh, keep this on the down low, okay? I'm strictly not supposed to openly talk about that."

"I understand." Dorothea shudders. "To think something like that could have been under our noses this whole time..."

Dorothea then downs her glass and quickly pours another. You had actually lost track of how many she's taken so far.

Dorothea slams her glass down on the desk a little harder than necessary. You could see her body swaying a bit more as well, her eyes becoming a little glazed. Just how much did she drink beforehand...?

"Hm, well, I suppose it's my turn then..." Her eyes nostalgically scan the various pictures on her wall. "Ah, well there was that time in college..."

"Which one?" You ask. You follow Dorothea's gaze to a particular picture where you see a younger version her, wearing a graduate robe and cap with diploma in hand. Framed with her was another fellow graduate and an older man.

"The Royal War College in Britain, of course." Dorothea puffs up with pride, a big smile on her face as her inhibitions loosen. "We've never forgotten the traditions of the Royal Navy, after all."

"I can understand that." You nod with a grin.

1. Talk

>>
>>2038741
You decide to let her keep talking, casually sipping at your rum.

"So, part our training in the college involved teaching how to properly sail a ship." Dorothea continues, a hearty smile on her face. "You know, the type that goes on water."

"Seems a bit antiquated." You observe.

"It's a tradition, what can I say." Dorothea laughs. "But, well, I suppose there was some logic to it. Can't run a starship without learning to run a sailboat, right?"

"Makes sense." You concede.

"So, I had my own little crew, and we'd sail up and down the southern coast, Nothing too big, just following navigation markers. Buuuuut..."

Dorothea's smile then widens, becoming more personal and sloppy.

"So, we had this idea to prank our neighbors across the Channel. A rival French college they built in Dunkirk. So me and my crew sneak out of our dorms in the dead of night, take our sailboat out, and sail across the Channel."

"At night? Isn't that dangerous?" You blink.

"Please, sailing at night is one of the first courses they teach you." Dorothea rolls her eyes. "We already knew all the winds and currents, so we make landfall in France in good time, plant our school flag right on their beach where everybody can see it, and sail back home!"

The thought of a younger Dorothea pulling a college prank, even if it was somewhat tame, was a pretty funny one.

"The French were absolutely livid!" Dorothea cackles. "And then some of their students tried the same thing a few nights later, but we were expecting them to come!"

"And what did you do?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Rammed their ship and sank it." Dorothea giggles, and then notices your horrified expression. "Don't worry, we pulled them out of the water and dumped them back on their own shore. It was quite the experience!"

"I'm sure it was." You grin.

"Never thought our very own Admiral started off her career as a pirate." You grin.

"Oh my god." Dorothea comes to the realization seemingly for the first time. "You're right!"

"So, do you have a parrot and tricon hidden around here somewhere, too?" You say as you look around the office.

"Of course not!" Dorothea huffs. "I'd like to think that I've grown past that stage of immaturity."

"Uh huh." You nod, not completely convinced.

"Though, I do have to admit, it is rather nice to... have someone to talk to like this." Dorothea coughs. "It's shocking how quickly people start treating you differently just because of what rank badge you wear..."

"That bad?"

"You have no idea." Dorothea sighs. "Anyways, that's enough talk. How about one last drink?"

Dorothea then reaches into the locker and pulls out an even older looking bottle of rum. You almost swear it had to be pre-Zentradi War vintage. She calmly pours out a glass for herself and glances to you.

You down the rum and immediately note the serious kick it has, feeling like molten lava running down your throat. However, you manage to maintain your cool and slam the glass back down on the desk.

"Jeez, just what the hell was that-"

And that's when you notice that Dorothea had actually fallen asleep, her head resting on top of her desk.

Feeling dizzy and tired yourself, all you can manage to do is give her some peace and quietly by slipping out of the office. It's almost a miracle that you're able to make it back to your quarters, where you take a quick shower and collapse into bed.

---

Suddenly, you're awoken by a loud blare. You're not sure just how much time has passed, but you instinctively leap out of bed and start getting dressed. You knew a scramble alert when you heard it.

"Caaaaaap!" Lara's voice wails from outside your door. "C'mon! We gotta go!"

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" You yell back.

The two of you hustle to the pilot briefing room, where you could see a number of pilots already gathered. Kellerman was up front and center.

"All right everyone, I'm gonna keep this short since we don't have a lot of time." Kellerman grunts as he adjusts his sunglasses. "Our sensor net picked up a massive contact breaching the buffer zone and heading straight for our outer defensive line. Analysts are saying it might be a Zentradi flotilla. The Admiral's already having Pacifica and her battlegroup move to intercept."

"Estimated strength?" One of the pilots asks.

"No idea, but expect the regular Zentradi crap." Kellerman explains. "Neumann, Williams, you're going to be pulling escort duty. Seems like Command wants to "test run" our resident idol."

Wait, really? Now?

"Yes sir." You nod, slightly troubled.

"Got something else to say?" Kellerman asks, catching on to your unease.

I figure we ought to mix it up, rather than just endlessly rehashing Macross classics. So instead let's rehash a song from a DIFFERENT musically themed anime!

"Nothing, sir." You shake your head.

"Then everyone get your asses to your Valkyries." The CAG grunts. "Your squadron commanders will give you further instructions.

"C'mon, Cap! Let's get going!" Lara taps you on the shoulder, bouncing up and down like an excited puppy.

"Lara, can you cover for me real fast?" You ask your wingmate. "I want to go check up on Amy."

"Hah, taken a real liking to her, huh?" Lara grins. "All right, I'll make sure your Valk is hot and ready to go by the time you get back. Don't take too long!"

"Thanks a lot, Lara." You smile as you turn and jog towards the bridge. From what you remember, Karla's people had built a specialized stage in the ship's bridge for Amy to perform on.

Once you reach the bridge, you can see Dorothea sitting in the command chair one level above, surrounded by bridge crew who were all similarly redheaded, oddly enough. You turn to the lower section of the bridge, where you could see a team of techs hastily cobbling together the stage. Karla was pacing back and forth, barking orders and directions like a slave driver.

And there was Amy, already in her idol getup, white as a sheet. You head over to her.

"H-hey, Cap." Amy tries to smile, but fails to make it look anything but forced. "Guess it's the b-big day, huh?"

You see the Pacifica drop out of fold space, and already you could see the ship and her subordinate carriers launching their Valkyries. You didn't have much time.

"Don't worry, Kid. You got this." You grin as you ruffle Amy's hair. "Just relax and do what comes naturally."

"But what if my singing doesn't work?" Amy asks nervously.

"Well, we'll just have to improvise. Not the first time I've scrapped with the Zeds." You reassure her with a thumbs up. "Looking forward to hearing it!"

"Y-yeah." Amy mumbles, her face now red instead of white. But at least she seems to be a bit more sure of herself now. If not for her own sake, then for yours.

You waste no time and make your way back to the hangar. No small feat considering the sheer size of the ship. Most of the ship's air wing had already launched by the time you reached your own Valkyrie.

"About time!" Lara pouts. "Come on! We're gonna get left behind!"

"Yeah, yeah!" You nod as you go through your startup checklist as quickly as possible before maneuvering to the launch deck.

You brace yourself for the launch as you and Lara take off in your Excaliburs. Up ahead, you could see friendly VF-25 Messiahs already making a beeline toward the Zentradi force, which you could now see was a trio of cruisers with a few smaller supporting ships.

"All right, we're starting to get the equipment set up." Karla's voice buzzes into your comm. "We're thinking of keeping her off our own tactical net for now and limiting broadcast to Zentradi frequencies only. Unless you think the rest of the Fleet should hear it, too."

>Let's keep things small for now. Broadcast to the Zentradi only.

"It's her debut. Broadcast it to everybody." You suggest.

"Haha, she's probably going to kill you for that." Karla giggles.

"So are the Zeds." You retort.

"That's a good point." Karla agrees. "All right, just stay tuned for some action!"

The resulting silence made you grip your control stick tight in a mixture of anticipation and worry. Up ahead, flashes of light gave away first contact with the enemy as Valkyries clashed with Regulds. Bright lances of heavy laser fire from the battleships began to crisscross the empty space between the two fleets as both sides took shots at each other from maximum range.

And that's when you hear the song...

You quickly find yourself unconsciously reacting to the beat, nodding your head back and forth. Comms on the net is briefly filled with confusion as everybody wonders where the he hell the music is coming from.

However, all the protests and queries stop as the Zentradi fleet formation begins falling apart and losing cohesion, and everybody understands.

And there's a triumphant cheer over the net as the NUNS forces begin to advance on the Zentradi incursion fleet.

But you knew that even with Amy's song working, the only way to remove a Zentradi as a threat was to destroy them. Those cruisers will still a huge threat and would have to be dealt with, and it didn't look like they'd be going down without a fight just yet...
