You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Currently, you and Amy had pretty much ditched what was admittedly a pretty dull social function in order to show Amy a good time. Or, at least, you hope you can.

Thankfully, it was a simple matter to get yourselves somewhat incognito. Both of you and Amy had brought some more casual changes of clothes, just in case, and it was a simple matter to sneak back to the locker room set aside for your group to change.

However, as you put your jacket back on, you notice a slip of paper fall out of one of the pockets. You bend down and pick it up. It was written in somewhat rushed and slightly crude handwriting. You're guessing that it must have been Lara that slipped it there.

You look around. Amy was still in her changing booth. Apparently that idol outfit took some effort to get out of without assistance, and she was pretty damn insistent she could do it herself. You weren't sure if it was just her pride, whether she didn't want you to see her change, or a little of both.

Either way, you read the note, and immediately see that Lara has thoughtfully provided a few suggestions on where to go, which was fortuitous since you didn't really know the area, either.

A true wingmate, she was.

Hm, well, you figure that Amy would be the video gamey type, so this Starwind Arcade seemed like a good bet. You do a quick net search on the place, and you see that it's the most comprehensive collection of arcade machines and games on Nabaal. Certainly looked to be a huge gathering place for the younger generation of colonists.

"Hey Amy, are you done yet?" You ask. She was taking an awful long time.

"Yeah! Just be patient! Jeez!" Amy grunts as she finally steps out of the changing booth. You could see that she was dressed in a pretty normal looking coat and skirt, with the only eye catching thing being a bright red scarf she was wearing around her neck. "There! What do ya think?"

"Answering that question might put me in jail." You grin.

"Ha ha, real fucking funny." Amy pouts as she punches you in the shoulder. "I'm not a goddamn kid."

"Sure, whatever you say." You reply, still keeping up that grin.

"So where are we going, anyways?" Amy asks as the two of you start making your way to the lift. Thankfully, you still have clearance for most of the Kapisi, so nobody bats an eye at you, though Amy does draw a few curious glances. However, you suspect more that it's from the oddity of seeing an apparently civilian girl wandering through the halls of the base.

"I heard Starwind Arcade was a popular place." You shrug.

"FUCKING REALLY!??!" Amy's eyes flash. "Then what the hell are we waiting for?!?!"

At that point, it's Amy practically taking the lead as she drags you to the base's main lift, which starts to take you down to the ground floor. Thankfully, it's just the two of you in the lift so no suspicion would be aroused.

However, that also means an awkward silence settles in, the only sound being the soft hum of the lift. You wonder if this was actually worse than that cheesy elevator music you had heard so many stories about.

"So, seems like you and Lara seem to be friends." You point out, breaking the silence.

"Ah, well, I guess because out of all the people I gotta deal with, she's the coolest." Amy shrugs, her cheeks pinking up a bit. "Doesn't try to order me around or push that galactic idol shit on me."

"And I'm sure the fact that she's also a Valkryie pilot doesn't have anything to do with it, either." You chuckle.

"Shut up." Amy mumbles. "Anyways, like I said, Lara's cool."

You nod at that, but before you can ask anything else, the lift slides to a stop and the doors slide open, revealing the tram that would take you out of the base and to the city proper. You and Amy quickly shuffle over, hoping that word hasn't gotten out yet.

None of the guards bats an eye, and no alarms are sounded. You and Amy get into the tram and it pulls out of the base. The two of you sit at a secluded pair of seats near the back of the car.

"Okay, so it's my turn to ask a question." Amy turns to you. "I keep asking everybody what your deal is, but they always clam up or pretend not to know. What's the deal with that? I know Spec Ops does shady shit but what's the fuss about what you did for 'em?"

"Sorry, I can't talk, or even think, about it." You shake your head sadly. "It's some pretty serious stuff."

"Oh, I see..." Amy sighs, a bit let down.

"It's nothing personal, Kid. That's just how my orders are." You explain.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it." Amy waves it off.

Thankfully, you don't have to spend too long to mull on this moment, as the tram finally reaches your desired stop. Outside the window, right below the tracks, you could see the Starwind Arcade, a round arena like building that was festooned with all sorts of lights and holographic displays.

Amy is already out the door the moment they open, forcing you to scramble to catch up with her. By the time you do, she's already grabbed a play card. She turns to you, a smug yet happy look on her face, her body silhouetted by the lights of the multiple arcade games behind her. Hundreds of people, young, middle age, and old, poured in and out of the building at a steady pace.

"So, you wanna join in on the fun?" Amy holds her card up between her index and middle finger. "It's good for two!"

"Said you wanna be a pilot?" You grin. "Well how about we test you out? Ever played Valkyrie Duel before?"

"Of fucking course!" Amy nods. "I was the goddamn top scorer back home!"

"Really now." You chuckle. "Up for a match or two?"

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Amy cracks her knuckles.

The two of you then file over to where the Valkyrie Duel machines were being held, and you could immediately tell that it was the arcade's most popular game, since you swear about a quarter of the floorspace was dedicated solely to it. You could see holographic Valkyries of all types dancing and flitting through the air for observers to see, while the "pilots" were busy concentrated on their own games.

Thankfully, you and Amy manage to actually find an unclaimed machine and sit down opposite each other.

"All right, so how are we doing this?" Amy asks as she inserts her game card. The machine lights up and the Valkyrie select screen hovers in front of our face.

"Well, just pick whatever you want." You shrug. "It's just a game, so it's no big deal."

"Huh, sure thing, then." Amy nods as she fiddles with her console.

You were pretty sure you had a good idea of what Amy would pick. Probably the Konig Monster or some similarly heavy Valkyrie variant. Lots of armor and firepower, but those things tended to be slow and unwieldy.

So how would you handle this. You look at the selection and see that it's actually rather well up to date, with many of the latest Valkyries already added in. So, well, you weren't left wanting for choice...

You grin as you see a familiar choice. The humble F-14 fighter. Absolutely ancient in this day and age, but it was essentially the progenitor to the current line of Valkyrie fighters. Only able to go to Mach 2 to 3 in the best of times, and armed with only basic missiles, and having no transforming tech so no GERWALK or Battroid modes. Picking the F-14 in a Valkyrie fight was pure insanity.

You were pretty sure that this plane was added in as a joke choice, but you simply couldn't resist.

"What? Fucking seriously?" Amy frowns when she sees your choice.

"Thought I'd have some fun." You shrug.

"Yeah, well, don't blame me for kicking your ass, then." Amy sighs.

It's then that you see Amy's choice. A VA-3 Invader fighter bomber. Interesting.

MATCH STARTING

The hologram then lights up, showing the two of your fighters floating in the air. Now, you knew that even if Amy was flying a Valkyrie that wasn't designed for air to air combat, it was still leagues faster and better armed...

You immediately nose your Tomcat directly up and go full throttle. Your virtual Tomcat blasts off into the sky, the ancient gasoline powered jet engines struggling to keep the heavy fighter from stalling out as she clawed for altitude.

Meanwhile, Amy's Invader boosts forward, no doubt to try and get an intercept course on you. Considering that the Invader could easily go twice as fast your Tomcat, your timing to outmaneuver her would have to be flawless...

Unfortunately, Amy's Invader is just too fast, its thermonuclear engines outclassing your Tomcat's antiquated jet engines by several orders of magnitude. It covers the distance between you in a flash, and Amy lets loose a punishing stream of cannon fire. Heavy 60mm shells shred into your Tomcat, shearing off a wing and completely obliterating the engines.

Yeah, this was it. Your Tomcat was in her death throes now and there was nothing you could do about it.

But your flaps and control surfaces, as well as your weapons, were still operational. You could probably do something...

You still had some control over your plane, and you still had some missiles. So in a final act of desperation, you hit your flaps, spinning your Tomcat from nose up to nose down to face the incoming invader with a speed that would have pulped you from G-forces alone if you had actually been in the cockpit.

Up this close, you don't even have to wait long for a lock...

You hit your trigger repeatedly, firing every single missile you have. At the same time, Amy switches to GERWALK mode to bleed off speed so she can maintain her cannon aim on your target.

Your Tomcat is shredded to pieces from heavy cannon fire right as two of your missiles slam straight into where the Invader's cockpit would be, turning a sure defeat into a mutual kill.

DRAW.

"What the hell?!?" Amy blurts. "What the fuck was that?!?"

"Well, you should just take it as a lesson to never take your opponent for granted no matter how inferior they seem." You grin. "Even if the F-14 is an antique, it's still got missiles that can take you out if your aren't careful."

"I guess you got a point there..." Amy concedes. "Anyways, I was thinking of hitting up another game. How about you?"

You follow Amy, and she pauses in between two sections: the area with the rhythm games and the area with the carnival games.

"Damn... which one..." Amy grumbles.

"Didn't take you for being into rhythm games." You blink.

"Well, it's a bit of a hobby of mine..." Amy look away awkwardly. "I mean, there was a reason they shoved me into the idol role after all..."

"Well, I'll follow your lead, wherever you go."

Amy pauses for a second, and then finally puts a determined look on her face.

"This way!" She grunts as she stomps off toward the carnival game side. "There is one thing I always wanted to get..."

She leads you to a small rifle range booth, the type where you shot small pellets at targets to rack up points. Pretty old fashioned, but a staple of carnivals. Plus, as was typical of carnival booths, the shelves were lined with all sorts of prizes and merchandise, and you immediately had a hunch of what Amy was gunning for.

A stuffed Konig Monster, and a pretty big one, too.

Amy steps up to the firing line and picks up a pellet rifle, examining it to make sure it wasn't tampered with. Looks like she was serious about this.

You just stay back and observe. You do note that Amy does seem to know how to handle a gun. She takes a wide stance with her legs to steady herself, and nestles the butt of the rifle snugly against her shoulder. She at least had the basics down.

Her marksmanship, though, was a different story. Her shooting technique was passable, but you do note that she makes a few small mistakes such as breathing at the wrong time when she fires.

However, despite this, she's able to hit barely enough of the targets to be eligible for her desired prize. The attendant calmly takes the stuffed Monster off the shelf and hands it to Amy, who hugs it like a pillow.

"Happy now?" You ask with a grin.

Amy silently nods, her smile absolutely beaming.

You check the time and realize that the day was almost over. Perhaps it was best to start heading back before your superior started to panic at yours and Amy's absence.

Ah, well, looks like it's time to start heading back before you were missed.

"Well, it was great and all, Amy, but it's almost your bedtime." You remark.

"Ha ha, real funny." Amy rolls her eyes. "And yeah, I guess it's time to go."

It was quiet on the tram ride back to the Kapisi. You suppose that both you and Amy were too tired from the events of the day to do much else but sit around. Plus Amy looked pretty preoccupied with her spoils.

You wonder what sort of reception you were going to get when you returned...

However, when the two of you exited the tram, you were both immediately greeted by a very familiar face.

"Captain." Dorothea says calmly, arms crossed with an even more cross expression. "Amy. I see that you two are well."

You and Amy could immediately tell that the Admiral was not happy at all.

"You are soooo fucked." Amy mumbles to you.

"Gee, thanks." You sigh.

"Amy, report back to Karla and give her an update on the situation." Dorothea continues.

"Sure thing!" Amy dashes off, making her escape and leaving you to face Dorothea's wrath alone.

"You will return to the Pacifica immediately, and we shall have a few words." Dorothea narrows her eyes at you. "I expected to hear a very detailed account of what has transpired."

Oh boy. You weren't sure if this was a good or bad thing...
