As her caretaker—for whatever value of the word, anyway—it strikes you at least check up on how Yamato was doing. It had been some time since you’d seen to her progress, and if there was the off-chance that she had actually managed to get something of hers running, all the better. She hadn’t been in the best of moods the last time you’d parted … or any of the times that you’d met, now that you thought about it.

You don’t fault her one bit for her mood.

You doubt that you could have stayed sane going through what she had endured.

The wind blows and the horn of a truck roars. You turn to your right to see several men yelling at one another over something about scheduling and tardiness, one of them holding up a clipboard and a pen as he leaned over the side of cargo bed, a young man marching up from one of the groups piled on the stacks of crates coming up to them, looking incredibly cross … only for a small girl to jump from out of nowhere, landing between the group on the truck and the cross young man.

Please move the vehicle to the designated area.

Her voice is calm, cool … and carried the veiled threat of violence. They heed her words, although not without some grumbling of their own. The truck rolls away, the annoyed-looking youth following … and the girl in question places her hands on her chest, sighing in relief. You don’t need to see her face to know who it was—that silhouette was too distinguished to mistake it for anyone else.

‘Hey there, Inazuma.’

She tilts her head, turning around … and comes face-to-face with you, dropping into a hurried salute.

C-Commander,’ she squeaks, her flustered form clumsily falling into a formal bow right after. ‘G-Good afternoon, y-you—ah, how are you, sir?’

‘Fine, actually—hey,’ you rub your neck, ‘you wouldn’t happen to have seen Yamato anywhere, right?’

‘Yamato-san? I saw her at the Range a few hours ago … but I wouldn’t know if she’d still be there now.’
>>
>>2005095
You give a small bow of thanks, to which you are greeted by the similar, flustered, dip of Inazuma’s head, before waving her off and heading to the range. Trudging through cold dirt, you tuck your hands back into your armpits, walking right up to the—in complete contrast to the rest of the mostly-refurbished compound—still look like it had been put through the blender. You step into the structure and walk past the familiar, empty table, your shoes making contact with the wet surface of the steps … before you start hearing voices.

‘—options aren’t broad in the first place, and we can’t press the stress on yours because it’s been traumatized keep shut. I think the best thing to do is to take it easy for now and—’

Yuubari? What was she here for?

‘Don’t you dare say that word.’

That was Yamato—sharp and threatening, but that was definitely her voice.

‘I’m speaking as both a professional and a friend, Yamato…’

Yuubari’s voice takes a hesitant, timid quality. Neither of them had noticed you, Yuubari standing on the surface of the water some distance off and Yamato on the wet, cracked tiles, her expression hidden from your immediate view.

Eavesdropping would be rude—and unhelpful, given that the context was hardly known to you. You walk down the wet steps, raising a hand in greeting … before immediately putting it away. Sparing a glance at the opening of the range—the mouth of the cove—you should have expected for the breeze to tunnel in here without hope of dispersion. Your wet footsteps echoing in the large, empty space, the two KanMusu turn to you, to which you raise your hand in greeting … before immediately putting it away again, having completely forgotten in the space of two seconds as to why you had elected to not bother with it in the first place.

‘Good afternoon, you two!’ you call out cheerfully to the two stoic features of the KanMusu present. Your step creaks slightly at the ice-cold reception; perhaps it hadn’t been the best time to cut in on an argument like that, but what was done was done—you approach the two of them, mustering the biggest business-smile you could muster.

In the basement of your thoughts, you see your old boss at the fry-cookery and your Instructor shaking their heads in disapproval.

‘Good afternoon, sir,’ Yuubari greets you, bowing slightly before eying you with a curious gaze. ‘I see that Akashi was able to give you the all-clear.’

‘Well,’ you chuckle, trying your best to lighten the cold—literally more than figuratively, if the breeze had any part in it—mood. ‘You know what they say about morons—hard to keep a sturdy one down.’

To your surprise, Yuubari snorts in amusement … before hurriedly covering her mouth and steadying her quaking shoulders. She draws back her hand, approaching the edge of the pool with her metal footgear, noisily stepping onto the cement with a loud series of clanks and dropping into a deep bow. A small glow of light catches your attention … and you see her Kantai Steel soles gone in favour of her usual brown boots, their shoelaces messily tied up.

‘It’s good to see you up and running sir,’ she declares with sincerity you wouldn’t mind hearing ringing in your ears more often. ‘I have some errands to run—don’t push yourself.’

‘Will do,’ you laugh wryly

Yamato,’ she acknowledges tightly, to which the Super Dreadnought only dips into a bow in return, her expression unchanging.

Yuubari leaves without further fanfare, leaving you alone with your charge.

‘If I may ask, sir, is there a reason that you’re around the range?’

‘I was looking for you, actually … I’d be a pretty horrible caretaker if I didn’t check up on—’

You don’t miss the icy sheen over her eyes at your words … and quickly cut yourself off before you dug a ditch any deeper than the nook you’d already made for yourself.

‘Look, Yamato …’

‘You spoken to anyone from the Division lately?’

Yamato tilts her head, confused by the oddity of the question, no doubt.

‘Sorry?’

‘I’ve been out for a few days,’ you shrug casually, slowly ceding into the core of your conversation—one that you hope she wouldn’t notice and immediately back off from. ‘I just thought if you’d been keeping up to date with whatever’s been going on with the Division that I should be … aware of, you know … during my little nap?’

You had to know how she was doing.

Not physically or by combat grade … but how she was really doing. Akashi had been adamant that Yamato, above all, needed Musashi and Nagato around her, but you weren’t so sure just putting her around those two would be enough to keep her going: if anything, you could feel the slight when you’d call their names out for assignments … and how, more than anything, she wanted to be alongside them. It was just a hypothesis, a hunch, of course, and you could have just been judging wrongly, but …

You felt that, more than anything, Yamato needed to thrive in her surroundings, instead of just being familiar and comfortable with what she knew, what she could fall back on.

Maybe it was because you

‘Musashi and Nachi just got discharged from Recovery Unit last night,’ ‘if you want to catch ‘me, I think they decided to sleep in for today. I don’t know about the rest … I spoke with Nagato and she’s been busy pulling triple duty: helping Fusou, sorting out the new assignments, your paperwork—you can’t help but smile guiltily at that—‘but I’ve generally stood out of the way of their business … although Tenryuu’s been trying to get me to, um, get together with her once in a while.’

‘Not interested in taking up the offer?’

‘I have things I’d rather,’ she scowls, coughing into her fist, ‘things I have to be doing more than socializing. They’re a … pleasant bunch, but it’s hardly going to be beneficial for me to just go out for a night or two when I could be …’

‘Trying to get yourself back on your feet?’

‘For lack of better word,’ she sighs, fixing you with a guilty, reluctant, stare, ‘I’m sorry, sir, but … I don’t see the point. I mean, I understand that you want me to open up a little bit more, but … I think that right now, I think I’d like to have some control over something to call my own.’

There’s no discomfort in her voice, but that cold, business-like crackle was more than enough to set the mood.

Yamato …'

‘Sometimes the best cure’s the one you’re not willing to take.’

‘This coming from someone who knocks himself into the next weekend on a consistent basis?’

Yamato’s eyes widen, as if she herself had been surprised by the sheer brevity of her statement. Despite the obvious malice behind her words, however … you couldn’t help but laugh at the truthfulness of the statement. Between getting involved with the Yakuza within your first few days of taking up the post, taking an illegal rescue across the Haszadian border, really, there was no escaping that.

‘Well, it’s nice to see that you’ve been talking to Nachi,’ you smirk, ‘or Tenryuu—I could never really tell with their insults.’

‘F-Forgive my insubordination, sir,’ she stammers, bowing in apology.

‘You know,’ you continue—briefly wondering if you really were asleep for just two days because you felt like you’d aged significantly just taking this approach, ‘it might not help you get out there any faster … but being around people and just sharing a laugh or two with them isn’t going to kill you. I’m not gonna force you … and I’m sorry that you were forced into this situation—and even if you don’t believe a single lick of what I’m going to say, I’m going to say it: I know exactly how you feel.’

You don’t blame her for rolling her eyes. If someone else had said the same thing, you probably would have done the same; perhaps even added in a motion of your fingers and thumb opening and closing to mimic the self-righteous speaker.

‘Yeah, I expected as much,’ you give a slight snort at her attempt at sarcasm, nodding in understanding. There was no need to be affronted, offended … after all, you knew exactly how she felt—why would you?

Yamato doesn’t apologize this time, but she does turn guiltily towards her tip-toes, her cheeks a little more pink to accompany her embarrassment of indiscipline.

‘It’s hard when you can’t control everything coming your way,’ you nod, your brows creasing as you fix your eyes on her. ‘Hell, it’s hard trying to keep a bead on things that you already have half a mind on—but it doesn’t help to double down and tell yourself that you’re gonna go out and tough a blizzard alone.’

Yamato bites her lip, rubbing her forearm … but otherwise says nothing.

‘I’m not going to say that chatting with Samidare or Murakumo’s going to … up your chances, but,’ you pause, considering your words, ‘it’s better to be helpless and lonely with someone else than doing it all on your own.’

She heavily sighs … and that’s when you see the spectre of a smile turn into a defeated grin to accompany the bemused shake of her head.

‘Do you humans always speak in cliches?’

Now you felt like rolling your eyes.

She really can’t help it … and you’re all the gladder for it. Yamato clutches her belly, letting out a cry that was a mix of an aged eagle and a hungry seagull, her her nose red from holding back in whatever she had left in reserve … and failing. The ritual lasts almost a minute—the quaking, amused form of one of the Admiralty’s most prized assets being reduced to a mess of a young woman at the hands of a bad joke was almost just too … adorable for you to not just bask in. It may only have been a small quip standing in a wall of bad humour, but … for all intents and purposes, you were at least able to alleviate something of hers by your own hand.

Even for a while, it would count as a win—and that was all that mattered, really.

‘All right,’ she wipes away a tear, sniffing and pulling the visible globule of snot right back into her nose, ‘all right, sir, you got me—I don’t agree with you and I don’t … well,’ she fixes you with a reluctant, albeit self-assuring smile, ‘all right, I’ll try to be more … inclusive, but I don’t see the point. You’re not going to be able to handle my Stream weight anyway … if—when I fully recover.’

‘You shouldn’t have to expect things in return for a friendly hand,’ you declare—perhaps a little too snootily.

She rolls her eyes before crossing her arms, irises twinkling with amusement.

‘You’re … definitely something, as far as Commanders go.’

You only shrug in response.

At least she hadn’t called you incompetent.

‘Yamato,’ you begin tentatively, ‘Murakumo and I … well, Murakumo, mostly, she wants to run a weaponry introduction class centred around the use of melee weapons. She, uh, tells me that you’re pretty handy with—and I may be getting it wrong here—with an umbrella, right?’

‘It’s a versatile weapon for repulsion and defence,’ she takes a defensive tone, creasing her brows. ‘A wide top to mitigate and avoid damage and enough length and sturdiness for a good swipe to send the small fry flying.’

To emphasize her point, she balls her hands into fists, taking a swinging stance as if she were holding a baseball bat … and clicks her tongue against the roof of her jaw as she makes a slow swing and light spin towards the exit of the cove, an imaginary home run playing itself in your head, the motion complete. You nod, unwilling to argue—that’s not what you were here for, anyway … and it wasn’t as if you could discount or judge, considering all the tussles you were in back in your working days. Even a trash can cover or a cardboard box was useful when you had to improvise.

‘Right,’ you nod again, ‘Murakumo’s asked me to, well, ask if you were interested at all in participating—I mean, playing a part … that you could, you know, join as a proctor, consultant … instructor for the prospectus?’

‘I refuse,’ she answers flatly, crossing her arms.

‘Come on,’ you wear your most convincing smile. ‘If nothing else, it’ll—’

‘KanMusu have never been receptive of … unorthodox combat methods’—you frown at that; Tenryuu and Nachi had no problems going in with their fists or swords—‘especially those that involve weaponry that isn’t inherent in our nature. We’re spirits of warships at our core—hah—so for a lot of KanMusu, it’s alien to even hold something that they can’t properly install in the core. For even more, it’s a hindrance.’

‘Tenryuu and Murakumo don’t have problems with it,’ you retort, placing your hands in your pockets—the place was getting too chilly for your liking, ‘and I’ve seen pretty much everyone fall back on hand-to-hand tactics every time a skirmish rolls around, so you can’t dodge that one.’

‘To better describe it, it would be like telling you to breathe through some else’s lungs—the object is foreign and inorganic to the majority … and a lot of them feel uncomfortable wielding something that isn’t essentially part of them. How you humans wear shoes that are suited for your feet, how you fashion rings to fit fingers … it’s the closest I can come to the analogy of comparison. Therefore, I refuse—it’d be a waste of time teaching that bunch anything resembling tactics. Even Nagato and Musashi don’t have any particular desire to put that sort of ad-hoc up.’

‘It’s hardly ad-hoc.’

Yamato giggles behind a fist.

‘You’re a heavy-hitter,’ you reason, ‘maybe if they see you saying it’s not so much ad-hoc as it is a viable fallback, you could convince more girls to adapt.’

‘You’d be surprised how reluctant we KanMusu can be,’ Yamato snorts, ‘or how slow we are to receive changes in tactics, in methodology—many of us have it ingrained, computed … we fall back on what we know, and a lot of them aren’t going to be as receptive as you think.’

‘Doesn’t hurt to try,’ you reason, ‘and anything that’ll up the odds is good enough in my books … especially if it’s got someone like you actually giving us a better case for change, right?’

She laughs wryly.

‘So that’s what I am? A mascot?’

‘You were one before,’ you continue, steady and honest to your core. ‘Your job description hasn’t changed … you’ll just be exercising some aspects of it you hadn’t quite considered before now—contribution’s the end game all round; don’t see why you can’t make use of that particular attribute.’

Yamato’s shoulders slump … and she takes a ponderous stance, rubbing her chin as she appeared to consider your words. You tip yourself forward and back, waiting for her answer—had you gone too far, been too direct with your words? You knew that she hadn’t been in the best of moods … neither were you considering that she might not have been in the best state of mind saying that, but somehow …

You felt that if you had treated her gently, tread around her like some sort of sleeping tiger, it would have been worse. That more than anything else, to handle her like glass would only have her shatter rather than hold together.

At least, that’s what you hoped.

‘All right,’ she agrees, nodding and grimacing, ‘I’ll do it … bur you’re going to have to find me a combat umbrella to work with. I dropped mine somewhere in the straits … and I think it wouldn’t be in anyone’s best interests to fly over Princess-infested waters to go and pick it up.’

You laugh, filling relieved that you were able to cross one thing off your list.

‘I’ll sort it out,’ you nod, rubbing your palms with your palm in your pocket—it was getting very chilly in here right now. ‘We still have to convince the MagiTek folks to give out some supplies … normal metal and wood’s not going to be exactly long-lasting in your hands, is it?’

‘No, it won’t,’ she agrees, before thinning her lips and pausing, ‘but good luck convincing the MagiTek Department to do anything that isn’t one of their madcap schemes. Even for humans, that bunch, uh …’

She trails off, circling a finger at the side of her head in a.

‘Like I said,’ you reassure her, ‘I’ll sort it out.’

She makes a sound that doesn’t quite put her eggs in your basket, however.

'Your confidence in me is elevating, truly.'

It strikes you that perhaps the one thing that had Yamato in her rut—which, hoping against all hope, had been lessened somewhat with your recent approach—was that she hadn’t found someone she could particularly relate to. People could understand her, yes, they could be aware of her condition, how her own perception of her condition went … most could even say that they could actually sympathize with her. Even with a support structure around her … it wasn’t the best to just have a bunch of friendly smiles all-round just pushing her up. She had to have an outlet—someone that she could actually sit down and know her … if only to push on her that it wasn’t as bad as it seemed without being condescending about it.

‘You know, there’s someone that I think you should meet,’ you suggest, a name immediately coming to mind. ‘You may have met her already … do you know Kashima?’

‘Only her record,’ Yamato states flatly, ‘that she lost two whole units under her command defending the southern front. I’m not … personally acquainted with her outside of one or two scrapes. The Court of Admirals tended to have Musashi and I as more independent operators most of the time or playing the battering ram … so even if we had teamed up, I don’t think I would’ve especially remembered her.’

‘You know her record,’ you’re not quite sure if that was something to build on so openly, but you try anyway, ‘that’s something.’

‘Is there a reason you’re bringing her up?’

‘I thought,’ you pause, ‘maybe you could … actually talk to someone who gets you.’

Her gaze immediately turns icy.

‘I don’t need a babysitter.’

‘Fact of the matter is,’ you power on, hoping you didn’t trip along the way, ‘that I … well, despite what I say, I don’t really … get feeling as useless as you are on this front. I mean, I’ve felt like a third wheel, like I’m not contributing, but, uh, I can’t brag about being in a place similar to yours. I’ve always …’

You shake your head. You were heading off-tangent now.

‘Point is,’ you pause, ‘I really think that she’s someone who can … if not help you, but she can help you understand your situation a lot better. I’m not saying that to be condescending, I’m really not, but sometimes, well, maybe once in a while what someone needs isn’t just a bunch of friendly faces telling ‘em it’s all going to work out for the best. You need someone who’s down there in the trenches … I think that …’

You trail off, running a hand through your hair.

‘I said to you just now that it’s better to be lonely with people than on your own,’ you sigh, ‘I don’t want to go around in circles on that … but I do think that she’d probably be able to relate to you better than rest of us can.’

‘Sounds presumptuous.’

You find that you could only nod.

'No promises.'

You nod again.

‘Well, I think I’ve intruded enough,’ you raise your hand into a salute, which she returns immediately. ‘I’ll leave you to your business, Yamato.’

‘Yes, sir,’ she acknowledges, dropping into a steep bow. ‘Thank you, sir.’

With a wave, you head towards the stairs and up right past the table, eager to catch up with the rest of your day. The cold makes you wince uncomfortably—it felt more like winter than it was the onset of autumn—as you step past the slightly wet tiles, throwing the empty hall a glance. It still looked like the interior of an abandoned building; hopefully the reconstruction crew would get here before any of the walls or the floor gave way—although, it didn’t look like the KanMusu minded at all, if the fact that the place saw as wide use as it probably ever did.

As you push the doors and head outside, you find yourself clutching your sides for warmth. You honestly hoped a requisition for thicker clothing would be approved … as thick as your clothes were, if the weather got any worse, you were scared of catching a bout of hypothermia from a leisurely stroll.

‘Shimakaze, wait up!’

‘Too slow!’

You turn to your left to see a group of familiar Destroyers rushing past the barrels and crates to make their way into the range. You recognize Akebono, her arms crossed as she marched at the tail end of the group, Tenryuu’s erstwhile assistant, Shimakaze, at the front with a tall Destroyer—Teruzuki, if you remembered correctly—hauling what looked to you like a bunch of miniature sea-mines right over her shoulder, attached to a chain and Hamakaze with small barrels of something in her arms, threatening to spill over.

She’s the only one who notices you, that white-haired girl, giving a small smile and a tiny wave, right as Akebono trudges past her. You return it with a casual, playful salute of your own … and the bunch of them disappear into the building.

You spare a quick glance towards the sky by the sea, the light beginning to take an orange hue—evening was fast approaching. You must have spent at least half an hour just chatting with Yamato at the range … there wasn’t much time to do much else before you had to return to the Barracks … not that you could think of anything particularly urgent that it was prioritized above your need for a lit fireplace of a bonfire.

No, that was a lie. There were many things you had to sort out right now. Which one, though … that was the tricky part.

Before you, the sound of yelling men and rumbling engines catches your attention.

You rub your hands for warmth, you consider the next item on your agenda.

Hopefully it would get you out of the cold, too.

‘You all right, Commander?’

You nod the best you can as the transport buggy thundered past the paved roads. You notice instances of rubble that were absent; buildings that were once half-ruins now either flat lots or refurbished, save for some missing doors and windows. There wasn’t a smiling face in the streets; grumbling soldiers, annoyed maintenance and reconstruction crew members smoking deathsticks and new cables and power lines being laid out. Almost two months had gone by … but even with the new foundations, the dreary atmosphere had stayed the same. Most of the civilians had probably up sticks and left for a better life … and the ones had remained were probably those that didn’t see themselves with much of a future outside of Yokosuka. Rather than the Admiralty’s hands, the Military had imposed martial law: the place looked more like a wannabe fortress or a large outpost for the most part … you could only hope the more suburban or inner areas of the town were different.

The buggy screeches to a halt, making you jolt.

‘Sir.’

‘Thanks.’

You hop out, wincing as you feel the impact of concrete rush up the soles of your feet and up to your knee. Popping a pill, you make your way past the entrance gates, briefly glancing over to the half-rotten gazebo, across the bare, cracked concrete of the barracks area, memories suddenly washing over you.

Iowa.

That was where you had had your talk with her … where she had decided to open up on the truth of it all: Vanzer, Saratoga, her role …

She was probably in the barracks right now. It was a good time as any to break the news to her. Rather than her getting it on paper, you believe it would have been a better thing for her to hear it from you first … especially about Saratoga. You rush over to the door and use your key, opening the door to a dimly-lit hallway. Even the common room at the end was in the dark, although you could see the shine from the lightbulb and the staircase lighting up enough to see your table.

So someone was still around or had just got back.

You take off your shoes—the floor was clean enough now and the muck would probably only do its job in pissing Nagato off—and make your way up the stairs, taking off your jacket and throwing it over your shoulder. It was cold … colder than you would have expected your barracks, but not so uncomfortable that it bit on your nerve ends like it had been back at the Base.

Iowa’s—and by extension, Nachi’s and Tenryuu’s—room was within sight. There wasn’t a soul in the hallway … the rest of your Division probably hadn’t been released from their duties yet. You approach the door, your hand reaching for the knob …

You hear something on the other side.

Rustling … or was it grunting?

You turn the nod—slowly and gently—before creaking the door open, peering through the small gap onty to see the mess of an open cupboard and nothing more. The grunting and shuffling are no longer muffled, but are accompanied by gasps and groans. You push more, your ear touching the old wood at this point as your feet shift and your toes enter the room. The sounds were getting louder, clearer, but at the same time, indiscernible from merely hearing them. You’re not quite sure what to make of the grunts, groans, gasps and the rustling that accompanied them … or the faint squelching noise that you could actually—

To say you were unprepared for the sight that greeted you upon fully placing the door ajar would be … not quite an understatement, buy you really were surprised.

It was Iowa.

Her back was on the floor, the sheets and blankets that were a crumpled, jumbled mess on the bed had hooked onto her bare legs. Her teeth ground top and bottom between her gasps as she massaged her large breasts, a damp towel splayed over her belly but doing nothing to preserve her modesty as her hips alternated between thrusting upward and gyrating sideways, her fingers between her legs … one hand stroking the swollen skin of her labia and the other desperately trying to keep what you could only guess was a ridged pink dildo. Her bare bum was caught on the edge of her bed, her eyes closed and her face dripping as she positively drowned in her own haze of pleasure. Her chest heaved up and down, her bare breasts covered as they heaved with her every breath. She turns her head left, then right, her mouth wordlessly opening as a cry escapes her throat, the blunt end of her instrument slowly pushing itself out from her slightly hidden-from-view extremities, the faint sound of flesh rubbing against … something making your ears turn red and your cheeks purple.

‘I-Iowa?’

You don’t know how long it took to recover your voice.

You do, however, realize that you should really have just backed off and walked away instead of blurting out the name of the only other person in the room.

C-Commander?

She stares at you, shocked, her eyes widening with surprise and horror, her body already scrambling to reach for whatever modesty she could preserve … before she violently convulses, her hands clutching the mess of her hair that was on her head. Her mouth lets out a wordless cry … and you see the fountain of juices exploding from between her legs and spraying all over the jumble of covers around her ankles, followed by gurgling sounds from her throat … and her body slumping, bum first onto the floor, her feet still on the bed.

She puffs her cheeks, her eyes threatening to burst in tears.

For once, you’re thankful for the fact that you were so used to the naked forms of attractive women; it doesn’t take long for your brain to take in everything that was happening, and as embarrassed as you were for yourself at barging in and coming upon the sight in the first place … you’re able to collect yourself enough to approach the downed, mortified and quaking body of the nude, post-orgasmic woman, her eyes covered with her arms. She doesn’t look the least bit open to a friendly touch … especially not coming from the one who had set her into this situation in the first place; especially in the worst way possible. Still, you were nothing if not ignorant of the spines of the porcupine … and reach down anyway, your metal prosthetic clasping around her limp wrist and pulling one hand away from her face. She sets down the other, her face flushed and her eyes red, her expression puzzling and … admittedly, arousing.

There were priorities, however.

‘Come on,’ you usher her gently, placing a hand underneath her bare back and trying to get her upright. At the touch of your flesh and blood fingers, she slides her nude legs from mess of sheets and blankets, her thighs touching the side of your boot as she steadies herself into a seated position.

Iowa sniffles, but says nothing else, her breath hitching in her throat. You don’t know what could be rolling through her mind: did she hate you? Was she going to stomp out of the barracks and never speak to you again? Would she tell on you to Nagato and cackle at the oncoming onslaught of lectures and boundaries? Would she denounce her allegiance to humanity and go out to sea with the specific intention of introducing you to a smoking crater at the end of oblivions?

The last one actually sounded plausible, all things considered.

She sniffles again, prompting you to pull her up to her feet. She’s heavy … but nothing you hadn’t managed before—not that that morning was a memory you would like to revisit anytime soon, especially what transpired after.

You quickly kick the door shut. The last thing you wanted was a repeat performance of that nightmare.

‘I,’ she finally speaks, her voice reserved, timid, ‘I can manage by myself, thanks.’

‘Come on,’ you repeat softly, ‘I’ll put you on the bed.’

Her form stiffens, as if on reflex at the word. You don’t push or pull, waiting for her to make the next move … and when she turns slightly, you follow, allowing her to take a seat on her bed. She immediately shuffles back as you let her go, pulling her knees to her chest, her back quite literally against the wall and her eyes darting between her toes and your face.

You get to your feet.

>‘I, uh, I’m sorry. I knocked, but …’ (Scramble an apology)

Something lights up in your head. It’s not quite as bright as you had hoped … but it

‘Hang on,’ you raise your hands awkwardly, stuttering as your eyes met her once more, ‘don’t go anywhere. Be right back.’

Wording was never something you could rely on to save your skin.

You could definitely kick yourself back in the head for that. In fact, you swear to build a time machine specifically to kick the nuts out of every past self of yours that uttered something awkward, humiliating or thoroughly disgusting and not-at-all cool. Which would have probably meant a turn of the lever every second day of your waking, breathing life … but it would be a worth the price. You slowly back out of the room, Iowa’s gaze turning from indignant to confused to frustrated and back to its base distress in all of a few seconds as your feet shuffle out one by one, before you find yourself striding stiffly towards your room. Your had an inkling of what to do … and frankly, if she was intent on busting out of your Division and right into the complaint department, and out of your immediate range of communication, this was the time to do it.

The door slams open and you dive right into the cupboard-cum-wardrobe, finding exactly what you needed.

Hopefully, after this, you would have all your teeth intact.

The chance wasn’t one you would blow your dice for, but that was neither here nor there.

You bring out the slightly crumpled shopping bag, the fair sun hat protruding at the top.

Before long, you’re rushing back down the hallway, skidding down the—

You really should have watched where you were going, in hindsight.

However, to be fair, you really didn’t know that rugs had such poor friction potential.

Commander?!

Forget death by Princess … your clumsiness would probably claim your soul before any Stream invasion even reached to the nexus of your mind. That, you’d probably bet on. You wince as you rub your jaw, getting your bearings again and feeling more embarrassed than that time you’d confused paprika with thyme at your old workplace. You had to live off instant noodles for two months after that fiasco. Wincing, your foot makes solid contact with the wooden floor … only to find a strong tug under your right arm, helping you to your feet. Door frames were painful when coupled with sufficient speed.

Iowa gazes at you worriedly, her ire—for now, at least—buried underneath her concern for your well-being.

Before she can rain fire upon you, however, you sheepishly hold up the bag, crumpled in odd places, but … its contents otherwise intact.

‘I … um, I’ve been meaning to give this to you.’

She tentatively takes it from your hands, and … peers inside.

‘Commander …’

‘It’s a gift,’ you hurriedly follow-up, ‘no catch, no take backs, just … I thought it really did suit you.’
>>
>>2009681
She bites her lip, her expression unsure.

‘You … shouldn’t have, really, I …’

‘I said no catch,’ you offer a kind smile, rubbing the back of your neck, ‘and I’m sorry that … it was rude of me to … you know.’

You guiltily shuffle your feet. You didn’t want to drag this on any longer than you already had—even if she was more comfortable around you right now, it didn’t do to press your luck any further than you had. You were content with her friendship and you were happy that she was … at least you thought she was adequately satisfied by the … apology. At this point, you were just glad that—

You feel a warm sensation on your lips.

It isn’t brief. It isn’t short. It lingers for a while … and you feel something wet and musky against you, before drawing back. Iowa’s eyes shimmer with sincerity as the bag hangs in her hands, her cheeks flushed, but not quite from … embarrassment.

‘I said, um, no catch,’ you repeat, your voice a lot smaller than you had intended it to be.

She tilts her head back, humming innocently.

‘I know.’

‘Iowa, I …’ you pause, right in the middle of uncertain territory. The kiss could have been chaste, friendly … just a mode of thanks, and it wasn’t as if you were particularly eager after what Kaga—and Akashi, you suppose, even if she hardly did anything aside from being selfish throughout the whole thing—had put you through earlier in the afternoon … mostly because you weren’t quite sure your refractory period had a Battleship of unimaginable power and a Carrier in mind when it had been put together.

You don’t even know just how much you’d relinquished to your baser instincts until it was too late … and you were gently locking lips with Iowa, her musk driving you right to the brink of insanity. She had never been like this before, reluctant to receive, closed off but not distant … she was an enigma. Breasts heaving up and down with every breath, her scent unsullied by any enhancement, her sculpted torso presses against yours as she holds your head in place, her knee gently teasing your groin as she sucks your bottom lip. Her strength is considerable … much more aggressive, much more under control compared to Nagato’s, Kaga’s, or Houshou’s … but at the same time, held back

She wants to unleash it—to let herself fall and devour everything before her without rhyme or reason. She’s strong—at least Musashi’s equal, perhaps more. You feel one hand grasp the centre of your considerably-smaller belly, giving it a painful squeeze—prompting you to mewl—followed by a gentle, loving rub and press of her fingers. Not willing to lose any ground yourself, you escape her hold and nibble her neck, daintily dragging your teeth to her considerable bust, suckling on her teat as you massaged the cheeks of her ass. She doesn’t moan—her breath hitches, her pitch heightens … and she squeaks as you bite and tug, licking all the way to her navel and into her neat, trimmed bush.

The dildo falls to the floor with a dull clatter.

You take in her scent, kissing the top of the entrance to her canal. She falls from your touch, and you follow her, gentle hands caressing the side of your head as you kiss and worship her, treating her with as much love as you could spare, with enough tenderness that you had learned. A thumb hooks inside … a rivulet appears, rushing out as if promising the onset of a flood.

‘C-Commander.’

You’re brought back to consciousness, hovering over her hot, hot body, more than ready to receive you.

‘I-If you do this,’ she looks away, red as beet. ‘You’ll have to take me. I … I won’t let you say no.’

Her entrance drips with arousal, the skin of her labia shining with a mix of her sweat and your saliva.

>‘Then I’ll let you take me too.’ (Take her)
>‘Right, I … I’m sorry, got a little too ahead of myself.’ (Back off)

You open your eyes, wincing … and sore. Nagato had been right about Iowa—right down to last night. The blonde Battleship snoozed on your body, her face innocent and content. You lean back into your pillow, scanning the dark room … and finding the other bed occupied. Even in the darkness, you could make out the top of Tenryuu’s head, dozing off in her bunk without a care in the world. You try to adjust your waist, pushing up and dragging Iowa, nude form with you. It was still hard to register what had happened last night … but here it was, living proof that you had somehow, against the most narrow of odds, managed to open yourself up to Iowa … and be received by her in return.

creak

You grit your teeth in pain as a sharp pain manifests itself in your front lobe. It’s brief … but the sensation felt like had your head put between the arms of a vice, only to be pulled right out. You hiss, reaching over to your pants, discarded on the floor … pulling out the bottle of your pills and gulping them down. Iowa frowns, clinging onto you but otherwise still content within her dreams. You close your right eye, stroking her hair and feeling her warmth against yours …

Only for the door to the hallways to open, to which you see one of your Heavy Cruisers, clad in a pair of spats and a top, flicking on the light and walking over to the wardrobe, not missing a beat.

‘N-Nachi!’

‘You’re awake, I see,’ she mentions nonchalantly, her disinterest in your current situation more than apparent … and surprising—Nachi almost always had a snipe in store. She strips herself of her wares without a care, tossing her towel over her shoulder and sauntering over to the open door … before closing it and leaving without another word, more likely than not hitting the showers to clean off the gunk from whatever exercise she had done in the morning.

It was morning, wasn’t it?

Session in about an hour and a half to those not following the twitter.
>>
You give Iowa a gentle kiss on the forehead. She coos in her sleep, clutching at your shoulder. You’re almost reluctant to dislodge her from her spot atop your—considerably less plump—torso, but it still stood that you hadn’t so much as bathed in the last two days … on account of being bedridden thanks to Akashi and the Vice-Admiral diving into your head to look for a corruption that … was admittedly and technically there, but not as malignant as they believed it to be. You shake your head, clearing yourself of thoughts, feeling your sore unmentionables slide against Iowa’s body … and feel your hips rattle as you put a step onto the fabric of your fatigues.

Pulling your pants up to your waist, you take the rest of your clothing … and give Iowa one more kiss, this time on the cheek, heading out into the hallway and right to your room to pick up your toiletries. The door is ajar … you hadn’t bothered to shut it in the evening. You shuffle through the darkness, opening your wardrobe and taking out your soap and shampoo, intent on scrubbing yourself free of the stench that had built up in the last—

There is light snoring.

You turn to your floored mattress to see your usual spot occupied … by two very familiar faces.

Samidare, with her feet sticking out from underneath the blanket, and Shigure, who was sleeping perpendicular to her younger sister, curled up in a ball.

You blink, surprised at their presence … why were they here?

Tuck them in abit more, make sure their blanket covers them properly.

Little peck on the foreheads.
>>
There was no reason to wake them up. Whatever their reasons for being here instead of their own beds or sleeping bags, malicious would hardly be a word to describe either of their motivations. Samidare’s light cry in her sleep has her shifting and rolling, left then right under the covers, until you see her forehead lighting clinking with the top of her similarly slumbering sister’s head. You tip-toe over to the both of them, gently pulling the covers down Samidare’s exposed legs and giving Shigure a soft pat of your prosthetic and smoothing our the edges of her blanket before grunting as you got to your feet, striding down the corridor with purpose and entering the bathroom, where you could already hear Nachi on the other side of the partition.

You set down your toiletries and tighten your towel, flashing your teeth at the mirror before beginning your tedious scrub of the residue of days. The standard issue toothpaste didn’t taste any better than it did before, but it was at least able to get the job done. Spitting your last into the sink, you let out a throaty hack to get the remainder of the taste out of your mouth, to no avail. It would probably stay with you until you got into your uniform.

—creak—

You wince in pain, your hand covering your enhanced optic. Weren’t the painkillers meant to keep these attacks from happening? You’d have to pop in another one later … and to think, Akashi had been worried about a Princess being the end of you. You can feel a vein throbbing as you toss your shower onto the rack, your prosthetic grasping onto the last of Kaga’s artefacts: her shower wash.

Nachi was already scrubbing away at her hair, the shampoo falling down along the small of her back and the curve of her buttcheeks, grunting as she lathered to the best of her abilities. Instead of a hot shower, you opt for a cold one. You wanted to be awake—not laze around in comfort. You reach for the knob, eager to get it over and done with …

‘Commander.’

‘Nachi?’

She was going to ask about Iowa. There was no way that she was going to let that slip.

‘How are you feeling?’

She was going to lead into it. You could feel it.

‘Well, I’m clean,’ you chuckle—a little forced, but you manage it just fine. ‘Spiritually and mentally, hah.’

‘Nagato told me,’ she continues, her back still to you as she continued to tend to her hair. ‘Glad the Princess didn’t roast the last of your active neurons. That would’ve been unfortunate.’

Her snicker echoes. It’s more contagious than you had expcted.

‘I’m glad you’re fine, too.’

Silence reigns for a while … and you decide to get a move on, placing one foot—

‘Why didn’t you retreat?’

‘Huh?’

‘Musashi gave you the option to abandon the mission, for your health, for your sake … why didn’t you? Knowing what could have happened.’

‘You wouldn’t have,’ you state simply, ‘why would you have expected me to do it any differently?’

‘Because you’re human?’

‘Ouch,’ you grimace, pouring the body wash into the left palm. ‘Nice to see that getting caught in an SOI hasn’t dulled your edge one bit.’

‘I don’t get you.’

You frown, feeling confused.

‘I think I’ve said it before … or at least I think I’ve said it before—mind’s a little fuzzy, Nachi, but … if I can’t do the same for you as you’d do for me, then there’s nothing here worth saving at all.

‘Is that really what you think?’

‘I wouldn’t expect my Division—anyone here, at all—to do something I wouldn’t be prepared to put my life on the line for myself,’ you mutter, more to yourself than a declaration of bravado and a puffed-up chest. ‘I want to fight too—and if I could, by your sides, I would. I’m scared every time you guys get out there I’d have to open the hatch to see one empty bay … I never felt like I belonged anywhere before, I always went job to job, just telling myself that things were going to come my way and fix themselves up one day, that’d be enough to wake up tomorrow.’

Nachi says nothing.

‘But that’s not what life is like—you give what you’re given right back … sometimes more, sometimes less, but I think if there’s proof at all, if there’s a sense of worth in this for humanity’s sake, then I believe that if you’re willing to stand in the firing line for my sake, for our sake, then I should at least have the guts to push through where you would have anyway.’

‘You’re an oddity.’

‘I know,’ you laugh, letting the soap wash off your chest.

Something presses against your back, coils around your form, bringing you into a gentle, yet taut embrace. You find yourself speechless as you turn your head to see the lidded, hazed eyes of your Heavy Cruiser, her lips parted, but the words dying in her throat before they could even make it to the tip of her tongue. You find yourself in a similar predicament, shock and disbelief taking over your senses. You can feel one hand running down your torso to your nethers. Nachi kisses your shoulder, pushing more of her weight on you and throwing you off-balance.

You grasp at the shower pipe, suddenly finding yourself perpendicular, but still face-to-face with Nachi. Your form seemingly shrinks as you slink against the old tiles of the wall, Nachi’s nude form dripping with the cold rain of the shower, her breasts enticingly hanging merely inches from your face.

‘N-Nachi.’

She wears a nervous half-smile … and you find a hand suddenly intertwined in yours.

‘It’s not something I … dislike.’

Those are the last words you speak to each other under the cold shower head.

You see Nachi’s panicked gaze, reaching for you as your body slides against the wet tiles of the shower. You want to hold on so badly … but you can’t. Every conscious effort to stay awake is met with excruciating agony—not like when the Princess invaded, no. This was more like a vice around your brain … and that somehow, you felt that you were responsible for it. Seconds pass like eternities, the world coming and going as you try to speak, but the words die in your thoughts before you can manage anything. The world spins and fades, until all you see is darkness, and the cool touch of oblivion.

—creak—

You can thank me later.

You shoot right up, gasping for breath.

‘Commander!’

‘Commander, are you all right?’

‘He’s breathing, he’s breathing—Samidare, pass me that cloth.’

You feel like you’d used your own head as a skateboard ramp for Yokosuka’s public use. Your breath is shallow, your intake barely manageable … it’s as though your lungs had shrunk several times over in the last few minutes. It had been a few minutes, right?

‘You gave us a scare there, Commander,’ Tenryuu grins—you can feel something on your head. A damp piece of cloth to keep you cool and—

Hot.

You felt hot. Burning, searing … your chest, your shoulders and your thighs felt like they were being cooked over a furnace. You feel hands all over you, Houshou’s voice growing indistinct as you struggle to stay awake this time. Tenryuu’s face grows more and more worried … and for a moment, you wonder if you’d gone deaf. Samidare’s eyes widen with fear and at the back, you see Iowa, pale as sheet, Nagato leading her away from the commotion over your still form … right until Nagato walks over to her and snaps her to the present. There is an exchange between the both of them … but you can’t hear.

Everything is drowned out by the ringing. You want it to just shut up so you can get up and tell everyone that you were fine. Houshou clasps her hands together, Tenryuu bringing you to your feet … and the colour fades from the world around you. You can’t move, you can—

‘Wuh!’

You jump right up, clutching your head.

You weren’t in the barracks anymore.

You really are in the habit of … biting off more than you can chew, or at least, I think that’s how the saying goes.

‘Nee-san?’

You turn around, finding yourself in an apartment that was familiar, yet … different. A little more chaotic, more messy, more … lived in.

That is not what has you surprised, however.

Do you like it?

That wasn’t Neesan. At least, not as you … knew her, at least.

‘Nee-san?’

‘Nice,’ you look her up and down, ‘uh, dress.’

Gone was the normal half-sweater, now she was clad in a pale—as in, literally pale—imitation of what you know on sight to be Iowa’s dress … complete with sun hat. However, there were certain measures of scale that didn’t quite make for accurate reproduction of the source, namely the straps and the additional buckle and the warped diameter of the hat, although you could probably just chalk it down to the fact that the both of them were of different sizes. She was still taller than you, towering over your wider form, but she didn’t loom like a crane. Her posture … was different. More dainty, gentle … feminine, you’d say, over the rough, uncanny form that she had made in image of her physical body. She looked like she’d been to a hairdresser, her eyes, once red, are a light, light grey, the hem of her dress dangerously short and showing off her soft thighs.

Her hands were no longer large, clawed monstrosities, but more manageable digits, no more different than your own prosthetic, although the sharp tips of her metallic fingers still warned you on how much business she meant.

She twirls with a giggle, her voice still rough, but otherwise more … dare you say it? Maternal.

This shell is a reconstruction of the avatar I had built for myself. I see your reception of it is hesitant. Does this not please you?

You rub your chin, bending over and narrowing your eyes to get a better look at her new choice of form. It was definitely less … robust, for lack of better word, but she definitely looked more human. There was more life in her eyes, for one … she could have been any beach beauty-cum-model save for her pale hair and hands, and you had to admit that the less-heavy timbre of her voice gave your ears some mercy compared to the booming rumble of her old sound. It was still rough, like an echo, however. She wiggles her hips left and right, humming happily to herself as the high heels clicked with every meeting of her feet, waiting for your judgement.

Drawing back, you place you hands on your hips … and give a sigh.

It didn’t matter how she looked. Nee-san was still Nee-san, even if she did look different.

‘I do,’ you answer with the utmost sincerity, ‘whatever form you take, it’s your choice in the end, though. You’re still you, right?’

She tilts her head, stopping her motions, her expression showcasing confusion and surprise.

This is a configured shell I structured out of convenience and necessity … I am not the I who I was before through this. This is my shape, my form now.

Nee-san tip-toes towards you, cupping your cheeks and smiling … happily down towards you.

‘Thash nowt whuh I,’ you hold her wrists, ‘that’s not what I meant. I meant like … you’re still you. You’re looking out for the both of us, right?’

An odd comparison.

You roll your eyes. Maybe you could try to explain idioms to her next time. For now, though …

‘Why the change … if I may ask?’

Your—

She frowns, smacking her chest.

The Champion from before—the one you called Akashi … her magic penetrated the outer shell of your spirit and exposed this place. It is within the deepest recesses of your existence, where your mind, soul and body meet … the closest to a point of unity you can hope to achieve … and she tore it apart. She was not wrong in her assessment of your faculties, but she miscounted the algorithm of which we operate by … that you are to me what I am to you—a host and its guest. I am no more an invader than my physical manifestation is … for value of the word: alive. However, the attack damaged the barriers and the structure … I had to re-build, re-construct this place from its core … and in doing so, I made a few liberties, changes that I felt were … appropriate.

You get the gist of it.

‘So … why the makeover?’

I believe it to be more … appealing of sorts. By your eyes and thoughts, did you not acquire that accessory in order to accentuate the genetic attraction of the powerful one?

You grunt, pulling on your collar.

‘I wouldn’t be so crude as to say that … I just, uh, thought she’d appreciate it.’

You wished to see her in it. Nee-san knows, my dearly curious host.

You roll your eyes, unwilling to rise to her bait.

Despite the gravity of your situation, you really can’t help it.

‘So … does that mean your current guise is for my sake?’

She stiffens, before cradling her arms, glaring at a corner of the room.

It is merely an … aesthetic choice. It offers no enhancement whatsoever—no expansion, no contraction, increase or decrease. This shell is merely constructed out of convenience and imaginary values … there is no other intention within it other than the whim to refresh a construct. While not evolution … there was nothing of your thoughts or ideas considered in making this decision beyond the judgement that your gift to the champion was visually satisfying. Nothing at all.

You wag your head, accepting her explanation. As much as you wanted to tease her, you supposed that the technical jargon was meant to discourage you from pursuing the topic. She may have been odd, even for a Princess, but there was probably really nothing of her consideration that involved your opinion of her transformation, surprising as it was. There was no need to press on more than that simple snipe.

‘Well,’ you sigh, giving a defeated grimace, ‘whatever it is … it looks great on you.’

Nee-san grabs the rim of her hand, bending it downwards as she crab-walks and attempts to obscure her face from view.

You don’t miss the tinge of pink on her cheeks.

Your opinion shall be … remembered, foolish host.

You’d forgotten how nice it was to be wrong in your assumptions once in a while.

You’d wasted enough time with leisurely topics. You get to the crux of the issue; you’d fallen unconscious pulling out—literally and figuratively—after an unexpected round under the shower with Nachi. The vice-like grip around your head, as though you were being slowly twisted into oblivion, struggling to remain awake. A coppery, sticky sensation running from your nose as you fell … and waking up again to a horrified audience of your Division, each and every one of them doing their best to keep you from falling back into the pit.

‘What happened?’

Your connection snapped … or rather, it’s straining holding things beyond its limit. I was able to dampen the effect … my abilities are holding back the brunt of it, but there’s only so much I can do before it snaps again.

You open your mouth to give her your thanks … but stop short as you register one word.

‘Limit?’

Last night, you inadvertently established a link with the fair-haired one—Iowa, I believe, her title is. She may not have sought to land you into such a state, but … our natures now, they are different. Your Stream recognized her reception upon instinct … and reached out to her without consideration for its own capacity. You reached out and received her spark willingly … and it now houses itself in you. By your unconscious command.

‘It … no,’ you shake your head in disbelief, ‘it couldn’t have been. I haven’t even activated a Stream with her yet … and I know she hasn’t dived into me, then h—?’

She laughs. Loudly and cruelly, she clutches her sides and smugly narrows her eyes into cat-like slits.

Contraptions and metal and lightning … artificial, impotent, dead. No more a part of you then the air in your lungs, my naive host. The Heretics and the Champions, they heed the call, your summonses and your will are one, bound by a thread of your own making. Do not be so naive as to think your connection is merely done through the whirring of gears and the flick of a switch. It is deeper, more fragile and at the same time, so much terrifying than you would care to know … than you should know.

‘So I reached out? Unconsciously?’

It is no more under your control than the flow of your blood and the expansion of your lungs. You received that which wanted to be received … that was willing to be received.

‘So I’ve just dug the grave on my own career.’

As you are, the strain of an active connection would be the equivalent of being struck by lightning.

You close bite your bottom lip.

If you do this, you’ll have to take me. I won’t let you say no.

‘How do I get this under control?’

Control isn’t your problem. Right now, the sheer strain that your mind and form is going through has only one barrier keeping it collapsing … me.

‘Oh,’ you blink, unsure of what to say. ‘Thanks, I guess.’

You’ll need to find a way to stabilize your mind and Stream so that it may be able to accommodate her … or, there is the choice of severing your connection with one of your House. Neither method matters, so long as you are breathing by the end. I have made it clear that my stance is solely on the side of your survival, so however you wish to do it, I will have no qualms. Until then, I will hold the tide … but as you are, you are unfit to perform your duties, unless you wish to be acquainted with Oblivion, which I strongly suggest against, despite your unhealthy obsession with recklessness.

She smirks, crossing her legs as she sits down on the couch.

‘So, I either … sever my connection with one—’

Sever a significant connection—it cannot be one that does not put a significant bout of Stress. That small one, the one with the odd hair … and the one with the blade, they are inconsequential to the weight you carry. The larger ones might alleviate you some, but if you wish to get back to operating conditions, I would suggest one of your two newest acquisitions … or the ones who shattered me into the pieces that barely make this form.

‘Kaga’s not part of my connection,’ you utter absently, moving to correct her.

She left your service. I can still feel her swirling in here … you are still her anchor and tether, make no mistake.

‘You can feel her?’

She nods.

I can feel all of them—I don’t know what their thoughts specifically are, but each and every one of them resonates. Fear, belief, faith, loneliness, companionship, envy … I have no choice in the matter. I am the one holding up what is left of this partition. They seep through … and the longer you delay your choice, the more visible I become.

‘Visible?’

My shell, my stronghold holds back the torrent of their connection, their link … it is only a matter of time until they sense something amiss. A stray emotion, a resonance that is alien in sensation or an unfamiliar echo … it will be enough.

‘Can’t you … hide it better?’

She nods.

Of course. Would you like me to fetch you a hearse while we’re at it?

You cross your arms, glaring at her.

‘You know, we’re not … siblings,’ you grumble, ‘but you’re definitely my sister.’

‘I’ll find a way to strengthen the hold.’

She throws her head back, cackling loudly. You rub your shoulder, feeling a little unhinged by the range of emotions on display—perhaps she had always had them and you were just blind and deaf to them all this time … but you were pretty sure that she had never been this open with them. It goes on for a while, maybe ten or so seconds, before she finally levels her chin, offering you a fond smile and a shake of her head, pushing herself off her seat and approaching you with eyes dancing in amusement.

If there is anything you are in that aspect, it is a sure bet.

The world shakes and spins …

I guess it’s about that time.

Pain.

The typical kind.

It shoots through from the side of your head and spreads through your body, a blunt sensation that could only have come from the fact that you had rolled off something from an elevated position and landed face-first onto the floor … of your barracks. You groan as your senses slowly return to you, one at a time. Touch is the first to return, a ripple seemingly coursing through you as you; it’s like trillions of ants were shuffling and dancing under your skin. The next to return is your taste … and you can very well take in the coppery flavour of what was surely blood at the tip of your tongue.

Sight comes next … and you find yourself overwhelmed by the faces of more than half a dozen of your subordinates, one or two of them looking as though they had been through all the teardrops they had in reserve, staring at you in worry.

It’s Samidare who tackles you, weeping inelegantly into your bare chest as the rest of the Division, Nagato letting out a sigh of relief so loud it is still audible despite your hearing not fully returning yet.

And then it does.

Commander—

Houshou comes to the fore, breaking through the gaggle of girls. Samidare detaches herself from you to allow for Houshou’s tender touch, her forehead making contact with yours. Her expression is focused, rigid, as her hands rise to either side of your head, her breath blowing upon your nose before she draws away, her expression troubled … and more than a little annoyed.

‘Commander,’ Houshou begins coolly, the rest of the Division stepping back, as if she was about to explode. ‘May I inquire as to why you had thought that bonding with a Battleship was in any way a good idea … with the full knowledge that you already had two’—she gestures to Musashi, then to Nagato—‘pushing the very limits of our Stream connection?’

‘I—’

‘Depending on your answer … I may or may not take independent disciplinary action.

Her smile is sweet, but her voice was laced with the purest of venom,

‘So please, Commander—enlighten us.’

You look around. Iowa wasn’t here.

You wince, clutching your head—more out of reflex and habit than the soreness present—as you turn in your seat and put your feet onto the floor. You should really have organized some kind of cleaning schedule by now—you could feel a layer of something on the soles of your feet. You stare up at Houshou, who regards you with the same piercing gaze … that you notice was now present on two of the KanMusu at the back: Tenryuu and Nagato. You hiss a breath, racking your brain for an explanation … and failing to come up with one on the spot. You hadn’t known that this was going to happen … but that was hardly something that you wouldn’t be quantified by.

‘I’d apologize,’ you grimace, ‘but that’d imply that I’d be regretting what I did last night, so I won’t … but I am sorry that I put you into this situation. I am.’

‘You’re lucky I was around,’ Houshou snarls, but the quaking in her voice betrayed more worry than malice, and the hitches in her breath in this brief pause made you feel more guilty than anything, ‘but what were you thinking? You know how much a strain a presence of her magnitude can take—after Musashi, you should have known that you were at the very limits of your capabilities. You aren’t an Admiral … you were already beyond capacity the moment you took us all under your Command.’

‘I wasn’t aware of that miscalculation,’ you mutter, sighing, ‘and I didn’t mean for it to connect.’

Houshou’s eyes widen, as do the others.

‘Y-You didn’t mean for it to …’

Cursing, you move to backtrack. You’d forgotten—foolishly forgotten—how big a deal this meant to them.

‘No, I mean,’ you pause, closing your eyes—you had to choose your words better. ‘I meant that … I didn’t know that Iowa would’ve established her connection with me last night on the spot. I thought that … it’d be like with you, Kaga … or with the rest. She wasn’t combat-capable and … I have no excuse other than the fact that I didn’t know and that I didn’t mean to rush in without so much as a word. I apologize for that.’

‘S-So does that mean Iowa’s …’

You turn up your head to see Samidare, with her eyes wide, looking hesitant.

‘She’s one of us now?’

You nod weakly. It was hard to deny now.

Nagato groans, rubbing her temples … but not quite able to keep the grimace off her lips. Tenryuu, true toe expectations, bursts into laughter.

‘You sure know how to choose ‘em, don’t'cha?’

‘You can’t handle her,’ Houshou steps forward, her tone menacing. ‘Your Stream is barely holding together as it is—I don’t know how you’re patching it from your end’—with a little help—‘but I don’t know when it’s going to snap … you’re risking brain damage. Your faculties aren’t developed—’

‘Yeah, I’m aware of that,’ you get to your feet and Houshou rushes up to support you, ‘but don’t worry.’

RECEIVED TASK: NO EASY WAY UP THE MOUNTAIN

You hadn’t intended to use it until you had some free time on your hands, but … with the bed made the way it was, you had little choice in the matter. You don’t know how long Nee-san could keep up her act of keeping your line from snapping under the sheer weight of Iowa’s addition to the presences within your spiritual nexus without being noticed, but with Houshou and Kaga—even if she was hundreds of miles away—around, it wasn’t a chance that you wanted to make.

You’re not sure how anyone would take it … but you had no doubt that you’d be no more welcome than an I-Class wondering into the Prep Dock.

If there was ever a time to use it … it was now.

‘I might have someone who can help: do we have a phone?’

Houshou eyes you with a scrutinizing gaze, before finally relenting, ‘You’ll have to go to an external communication station … the closest ones I’m aware of with secured working lines are in possession of the Taiyouga Army and within the base compound. You’ll have to make your way to either one of those to make a call out.’

‘Right, gotcha,’ you offer a weak smile—she doesn’t return it.

You know you weren’t going to get away with a reference as vague as that.

‘The First Admiral,’ you pause, ‘she gave me a phone number … I think whoever’s at the other end of it should be able to help. At least … I hope it’s who I think is on the other end.’

‘Phone number?’

‘Someone who …’

You pause. The First Admiral had been very vague with her terms … and made no secret that she believed that you were the last person that deserved to have it handed over to you. Considering the context of the secrecy, you believed that it could have been only one other faction that had been embroiled in this mess … and the only one that would be so sour so as not to show its face and step back into the shadows. You remember the words on the scrap of paper, safely kept in the drawer of your wardrobe upstairs. You eye Houshou, wondering if she—if the whole room—could be trusted with this information. She was already with the ISSF, wasn’t she?

Yet, the First Admiral had been more than merely silent on the matter.

It wasn’t your secret to break.

‘You’ll just have to trust me,’ you give her your most reassuring smile, ‘I’ll get this sorted out, I promise.’

‘I don’t know how long you’re going to be able to hold it back.’

‘Commander,’ Nagato steps in, sounding worried.

The rest of the room isn’t any better.

‘I … I can’t say much, sorry, but please … trust me on this.’

Houshou hesitates … before letting out a sigh.

‘If you think you have a handle on things, I’ll … I’ll trust you,’ her words are reluctant, but she concedes with sincerity, ‘but if I sense the pressure oscillating in any way I find at risk … I’ll cut the thread. With or without your consent.’

You stiffen slightly.

It wasn’t a bad compromise.

Houshou, whatever her feelings for you, had drawn the line as soldier looking out for the well-being of her Commander. A glance around the room sees several tight nods from everyone present, save for Shigure, who merely stares at you … and Samidare, who bites her bottom lip as she observes you. Nachi had left the room, wherever she had gone was anyone’s guess.

‘All right, terms accepted,’ you grimace … before finding yourself enveloped in a hug by your only remaining Carrier.

It’s not long, but it is tight … and warm. Looking up, you see the rest of the room dispersing, going off to do whatever it was they had had on their timetables before you’d inadvertently kicked whatever scheduled programming was there to the curb, Houshou following after detaching herself with a light bow. As you clutch your towel—and you are thankful that they’d been courteous enough to equip you with one before depositing you on the common room’s couch—and sit down, you hear the click-clack of metal heels against the wooden floor … and look up to see Nagato, a clipboard in her hands as she wears a—or at least an attempt at—comforting grin. Playfully smacking your shoulder with the wooden object, she drops down right next to you, placing one leg over the other.

You know she was about to let all Hell break loose.

You brace yourself for it.

‘There is such a thing as being too greedy, you know.’

You shift your gaze to her without turning your head, still expecting the bomb to fall right over.

‘You can’t just keep falling for every girl out there with a sob story and a sincere request,’ she laughs, clutching the clipboard close to her chest. ‘If you keep chasing ‘em, there aren’t going to be enough left out there for the others.’

A snort escapes your nostrils.

‘This is quite the role change,’ you comment, smiling guiltily. ‘You’re not going to yell at me?’

‘Why?’

‘Because I promised that I wouldn’t replace you.’

‘Have you?’

‘No.’

‘Then I’m not yelling,’ she holds a hand to your cheek. ‘Well, maybe a little … the rotation now’s probably going to have me seeing less of the sea and more of the table once she’s up and running, I’d rather see the end of an I-Class’s tongue than saddle myself next to Ooyodo.’

She stops herself.

‘Don’t tell her I said that.’

You lean in to her, your head touching. The urge to wrap her in an embrace of your own is strong, but you find that your whole body is too sore, too tired now, to even lift coil an arm around her, prosthetic included. Your bare shoulders touch … and you immediately feel her resting into you, letting out a tired sigh. Your good eye peers across at her tired form—she must have spent the better part of the day fretting over you; her hand runs along the metal crooks of your exoskeleton, before finding its way to the back of your hand … and wrapping around the cold steel of your thumb.

For a while, neither of you say a word to one another, merely taking in each others’ company. It wasn’t often that you both had time like this for one another … and it was a testament to that fact that you had needed to be shocked halfway to brain death by Akashi and get a spiritual seizure of your own doing to even get affectionate moments like this. Nagato lets out a breath, scooting closer, her head shifting so that it was under yours now, practically clinging to you. One hand your far shoulder and the other on …

‘What’s that clipboard for?’

She immediately pulls away, flushed.

‘Sorry, I,’ she bites her lip, shaking her head. ‘Your Attendants delivered it this morning—I didn’t know you were going to be back by tomorrow night, so I took the liberty of reassigning them to my office … at least, on a temporary basis. This … is the Magitek Department’s requisition form.’

She hands it over to you.

‘You know, you’ve probably become one of two people in the Admiralty they probably tolerate at this point.’

You frown.

‘Why’s that?’

Nagato cuddles closer to you, her eyes twinkling mischievously.

‘How many Commanders or Admirals are crazy enough to bring back a Re-Class’s appendage in a freshly-preserved stasis container?

Shrugging, you find that you can’t quite disagree there. Besides, having the MagiTek Department on your good side was news that was more than welcome—you didn’t want to set off the men and women that made sure the guns were firing and the girls were healthy. You flip through the sheets—apparently your little side mission had borne immediate fruition. They were ready to get started on their new Abyssal body part … and apparently had found you the worthy beneficiary of its fruit.

You read through the form, wincing as you try to get a better position. You didn’t want to complain, but Nagato was heav—

Commander, what are you thinking?

You laugh nervously, lifting up the clipboard.

Addendum to thread folks. This mission is a lvl 3 mission. This means our rewards for this mission is a +2 to kanmusu stats which can be seperated into +1/+1.

According to mech in the discord, midgame kanmusu stat values (which is where we are now) should aim to be close to 5/5/5 in ATK/DEF/SUPT.

If you'll see the uploaded pic, this is our current stats copied off the google docs with some additional calculations to show how far each kanmusu is from that goal.

I hope you guys find it useful in determining who gets what.

‘I’d like to go over the new gear that the MagiTek folks have in mind.’

Nagato flips over the first piece of paper:

RND-004 UNICORN
EQUIPPED BY: Heavy Cruisers Only
PROPERTIES: +2 BONUS to ROLLS in DUEL/SOLO situations

An independent aiming program designed to assist KanMusu who operate under lone circumstances, the RND-004 UNICORN is the pinnacle (for now) in target assistance. Featuring lightspeed calculations of enemy patterns and operating algorithms, they are able to successfully engage and assist the KanMusu in shaking off the most persistent of enemies. The low power draw means that there is no need for KanMusu to recharge, as it is always in an active/passive mode. However, despite advancements, there are still limitations: the RND-004 UNICORN specializes only in one-on-one situations and is not (yet) able to recognized multiple hostile forces to calculate its algorithm nor does it accommodate for group situations. Still, it may prove to be a powerful tool in missions requiring low or only one member of personnel.

RYUUGATSU
EQUIPPED BY: Battleships Only
PROPERTIES: CRITICALS are 5 instead of 8* for phases involving the Battleship; Heavy Damage after 2 Skirmishes with Significant Damage

The RYUUGATSU is an enhancement to the standard Battleship load-out, changing out its discharge of standard magic-constructed shells for science-enhanced (with a little bit of help from magic) energy weaponry (Battery, you idiot: see me). It’s a tertiary weapon enhancement rather than a primary firing module, but make no mistake, they pack a wallop. Battleship-class KanMusu are able to fire with all of their might, but exchange the firepower for endurance: ammo consumption doubles due to the sheer draw of the weapon and their operating time … which also means that they become much more fragile from enemy hits, especially during skirmishes, where their weapons may be rendered even more unstable due to the nature of the RYUUGATSU BATTERY’s configuration.

IMG-027 SIDEWINDER
EQUIPPED BY: Light Cruisers/Destroyers Only
PROPERTIES: -1 to ENEMY ROLLS during INITIATIVES with EQUIPPED DESTROYER IN POINT ROLL

NOTE: Shigure, it’s us: we got that note that said you liked stabbing things. You know what this is for. Don’t ask where it came from, only that it’s been made with the love and care of three crazy women and one guy on nothing but painkillers, two horror movie marathons and a key that didn’t fit. We hope that this finds its way to you, or if it doesn’t, that it’s given to someone who can make use of it.

With Love, Your Co-Workers

Can the gear be removed and reassigned to different kanmusu b/w missions.
>>
>>2015709
i really dont like the gear, seem way too situational
shigu shiv seems the best one though
>>
>>2015713
Of course the gear is situational. They're not "upgrades".
>>
>>2015711
Yes. Within the limitations, however.
>>
>>2015715
shigu's shiv and the unicorn seems the best "might be usefull" things
>>
>>2015718
yeah
im voting shigu's shiv, seems the best thing

even if its a madman dream... "thing"

going for IMG-027 SIDEWINDER
>>
just to get it clear
if we dont chose gear we get the upgrades on top the usual?
>>
>>2015731
Yes, but they're consumed in the same way the usual upgrades are. You will not get the weapons or the bonuses.
>>
>>2015709
>RND-004 UNICORN

All the gear is situational but this one looks like it'll activate more often, unlike with the sidewinder which only comes into play at the initial contact.
>>
>>2015740
Initial contact with each group. It's mostly designed as an Intercept-First Weapon.

You make your decision.

‘Do these guys just have a two-day service for things like this or what?’ you muse, drawing back from Nagato and stretching with a groan. It was an honest question. It took you weeks, months, just to sort out your own plate … and here were a bunch of madmen and madwomen—in their own words, no less—doing the impossible and turning eldritch components into viable weaponry.

Nagato chuckles as she gets to her feet.

‘For the average civilian, the idea of a KanMusu itself is terrifying,’ she shakes her head, smirking, ‘now could you imagine the kind of person that would find an Abyssal Command Unit fascinating.’

You’re not sure you want to know, to be honest.

‘Have you decided whose core weaponry you’d like to enhance?’

‘Thinking about it.’

Houshou:
ATK +1, SUPT +1

Houshou is currently our weakest Capital ship and our only sortieable carrier until Kaga comes back.

Thus an increase in atk for more firepower and increase in supt so that she can be deployed more often.

The sidewinder should go to the armoury but be open for our DDs and Tenryuu to withdraw. We should of course let them know of its existence so they can take it out to familiarise themselves with it.
>>
>>2018742
how much is available?
>>
>>2018881
Basically, a choice of:
>+2 to a single stat on any individual KanMusu
>+1/+1 to 2 stats on any individual KanMusu.
>+1 to 1 stat on any 2 KanMusu

Houshou:
+1 ATK

Samidare:
+1 SUPT
>>
>>2018911
In that case I'm inclined towards
Houshou SPT +1
Takao SPT +1

Unless there's a reason to bring a destroyer up, in which case I'd propose Murakumo

I think it's time for my gameplay hints for your future endeavors.

WHAT DO THE STATS MEAN? AREN'T THEY JUST NOT COUNTED IN ROLLS ANYWAY?
>True, their visible value isn't quite as apparent. So what do the stats do and mean? Well, they assist in your KanMusu, in the narrative, "punching above their own weight". The ATK, DEF and SUP stats determine the degree of damage dealt, the degree of significant damage AVOIDED and the ability to press on after a battle and recovering from mission fatigue respectively. For example, Shigure with "1" in her ATK stat isn't going to do much, an Abyssal that is above her "rank" even if you roll all 5 winning rolls against mine because her weapon, while precise, can't break down a glass door at that rank. Nagato would also have horrid avoidability with a "1" in her DEF stat and would still have to suffer some measure of damage against many other Abyssal ships

STILL CONFUSED, GM
>Basically, Destroyers can't poke a noodle through anything above Light-Cruiser type unless going into SKIRMISHES (which means everyone gets some measure of damage automatically), Battleships and Carriers can't outmaneuver anything AT ALL without some significant investment. It might also be my mistake as I keep forgetting to give you an after-battle/skirmish check on your KanMusu's statuses during missions.
>E.G. Heavy Cruisers battles with Battleships will become MORE drawn out even with constant winning rolls without significant investment in their ATK stat because Battleships are just that robust. Same goes for Destroyers and anything above Light Cruiser Class. So if you want Nagato to zoom-zoom, pump up her stats in DEF to a significant level to wholly avoid damage in rolls.

WHAT'S THE CAP ON THESE STATS?
>5/5/5. You'll break the limit later on, but I won't spoil you on what will enable you to do so.

WHEN ARE WE GETTING THE LEWDS

TYPES OF BATTLE:

Normal: Normal battle gear/tactic bonuses applicable
Skirmish: Up close battle; damage is unavoidable and significant damage chance is heightened without upgrades
Ambush: -1 to ROLLS, -2 if Command Unit is present
Initiative: Significant damage is avoided. Criticals result in a significant member of the ENEMY SQUADRON eliminated.
Duel: Normal Battle, but rolls are concentrated on one KanMusu
Unsupervised: Battle occurs without your intervention/direct orders

You hand over the forms to Nagato, who takes a bow as she steps away.

‘I’ll hand this over to the MagiTek Department,’ she states, heels clicking as she made her way to the door, ‘and please don’t push yourself too much, sir.’

You cross your arms, feeling a little offended at her patronizing tone as she turned on her heel and left. It wasn’t as though you were going to just step into another puddle of trouble the moment she—or any of the other girls—turned her back to you. It was hardly the first time that you’d circled yourself back into the hospital bed.

Or the second.

Or the third.

Maybe the fourth.

More likely, the fifth.

A grumble escapes you as the sound of the front door closing reaches your ears … and you realize it wasn’t from the mix of frustration and annoyance that was in your throat. It was from your stomach: you hadn’t had anything to eat since you’d woken up. Wincing, you rub your shoulders, feeling a little awkward as you walked towards your table, your towel barely hanging around your waist. Not from the fact you were in the common area practically half-naked … but that your arms and legs felt heavier, but at the same time, less restricted, the artificially-active muscles under your prosthetic included … like your muscles and arteries had somehow been freed and stretched.

You absently bounce on your heels, almost tripping back onto the couch.

This must have been what Akashi had meant by changes … they weren’t quite visible yet, but they were drastic enough that you found immediate adjustment unavailable to your person. It was subtle, yet … more than apparent to you. Your belly, though … it hadn’t change much, if at all. Not since you got back from Haszad.

You’re not quite sure if that was just magic’s idea of a joke or that some things weren’t overnight projects … but either way, it was just another pie on your plate; as if you hadn’t had enough at the table.

Shaking your head, you reach to the bottom drawer and pull, taking out two packs of anpan—leftovers from the snack time you and your Attendants had shared before. Popping the plastic, you hungrily munch on the days-old snack … and it felt like a feast in on itself. It’s less than ten seconds before you munch the last crumb of the first pack’s contents and you’re up the stairs and heading to your room for a change of clothes by the time you’re chowing down on the second.

You toss on a fresh set of fatigues, rubbing your neck as you look up at the clock: it was just about past noon, just after lunch time.

So it could be just a coincidence that our loving symbiote's avatar took on shape of a blonde bombshell wearing the gifted clothing immediately after linking up with a battleship notorious for her very fine presence, prone to intermingle with that of her host, not to mention conspicuous font recolouring?

I like how you avoid spelling things out even if it results in us coming up with bullshit

Since you guys are wondering what could have happened if you'd done this without meeting with the First Admiral.
>Long convoluted Quest to try and manage your Stream, eating into even more time
>You might have tried to consult with Houshou to manage your Stream, which would have been dead or working on a few coin flips, depending on your luck
>You'd be forced to abandon one of your heavy hitters permanently or face an immediate game over because, well, stress.
>Admiral/Grand Lieutenant steps in and chastises you

One of those things would happen.
