Chapter Nine: First Sin

You stare at the gate before you, a porticullis-like grille pulled down over a thin steel door that blocks the shipment vent that connects the Consortium Tower to the merchants of Greenside. It is thrown into a stark relief of light and shadow thanks to the bright white light of the newly-lit lamp. Behind you you can hear screams and the roar of an out of control blaze.
You’ve all worked so hard to make this chaos, to draw the Viridescent Consortium’s gaze anywhere and everywhere but yourself, but that doesn’t mean that the three of you will be able to just walk in. Of course they’d close up the shipping vents!

Wick: 6/10

“I agree with Beatrice,” you say. “The longer we dawdle, the more time they have to recover. We can’t afford to waste any more time!”

Wick: 5/10

You sweep back your cloak and pull the runesword free from its scabbard. You hold the sword in one hand and your Lamplighter’s wick in the other for a moment before bringing your hands together and pressing the tip of the wick along the flat of the sword. The blade, which had once been a tool of evil before you liberated it for a more righteous cause, bursts into flame as you ignite it.
You strike the grille, the steel bars just thin enough for your searing sword to shear right through them in just three slashes. Each strike jars your arm but you keep your grip steady as best you can. The grille falls away, the ends of the broken steel glowing orange as they fall into the darkness of Dis below. The set of steel door beyond is a harder task, something that even your red-hot and rune-inscribed blade would only scratch. But the gap between the two doors is just wide enough to jam the blade into and you do so, stabbing into the gap and then bringing the sword down with a hard crack as it strikes whatever locking mechanism holding the doors shut together.

You pull it back before the flame can die entirely and turn to face your two companions, the doors swinging open behind you.
“Let’s go.”

“Uh,” Beatrice says. “...nice job.”

You lead them into the darkened hallway, the concrete shipment corridor illuminated only by the shadowy half-light of a green lantern and by your flickering sword. The room beyond is unoccupied save for empty metal barrels. Looks like between the the contaminated shipments, the broken water supply, the lamps and the fires in Greenside, nobody’s even left to man this station. And why should they? Right now, you’re several floors below the tower’s main entrance and the areas within it that are freely available to the public.

“But no seriously,” Beatrice continues. “I don’t remember your sword being that hot last time you did that.”

“I don’t think I ever saw it,” Abe says.

1/2
>>
>>1999516
Is it? You can’t quite recall right now. And if it is, that is no surprise. You are standing before the end of your lifelong quest, the first of seven great sinners who thought that they could escape the Wheel God’s justice. Why wouldn’t your Flame Internal burn hotter now? There is no turning back.

The little shipment depot terminates in a short corridor with two metal doors. The first opens easily and reveals a concrete stairwell going both up and down. The second set of doors does not open at all, a metal panel beside it revealing it to be some sort of elevator.

“I’ve heard of these,” Beatrice says. “I think you have to push the button to ‘call’ it up or something. I wonder if these are ancient or if they’re steam-powered. They’d have to be Second Age, surely. It could save us a lot of inconvenience.”

“I’d rather not place ourselves directly into the enemy’s hands,” Abe counters. “We don’t control that thing. The stairs might take longer but they can’t very well disable those.”

“Yeah and we’d only run into half the entire damn company while we use them!”

Under directives from present Consortium officials, the local Blackcloaks call in reinforcements and start to direct crowds away from Greenside in an effort to prevent injuries and more importantly, help preserve some order and prevent the Consortium's main entrance from being overrun. With this help, the Consortium should be able to focus their efforts a little better.

>Use the elevator.

“We still have the element of surprise. Let’s use it. Call the elevator.”

Abe nods and pushes the red button.
“I must admit, I am a little ignorant on the exact functioning of these things.”

“They’re primarily a machine of the Second Men,” Beatrice says. “We made some but only in the big cities and they were clunky steam-powered things. They won’t have those here.”

You hear the elevator long before it arrives, a faint screeching that grows louder and louder before the doors spring open to reveal a baroque black cage dragged by a thick metal cord. You have to admit, that’s not what you expected and judging by her expression, neither did Beatrice.

“That’s not ...that’s new! Is it really steam-powered?”

You step into it cautiously, the elevator creaking as you do so.
“It wouldn’t make such a noise if it was ancient. But I don’t think the green flame can be hot enough to power a steam engine either.”

“It could be powered by something else,” Abe says. “Remember how Zeno moved that train?”

“”A witch elevator?,” Beatrice says, her tone containing all you need to know about her opinion on that idea.
“That’d be absurd and a waste. But they can’t have a steam engine! They wouldn’t possibly run in Dis.”

“Didn’t the Inspector you told me about have one for his locomotive?”

“That...that was different. There shouldn’t be one here.”

“No,” you tell her. “No, I think this tower might be one of the only places where you could have one. They have as much heat as they want!”

“Look at this.”
Abe’s words interrupt both of you, the man calling you over to a sign listed on the side of the elevator. It’s a list of floors, all of them grouped into several different labels all stacked on top of one another.

-PRIVATE OFFICES-
-FILING-
-PUBLIC INFORMATION COMPLEX-
-ACCOUNTING-
-SHIPMENTS-
-BOTTLING PLANT-
-FIRECRAFTING WORKS-

“This must be how the tower is divided up,” Abe says. “I guess we’re somewhere in Shipments right now. Where do you think the shard is kept?”

“It’s obvious,” Beatrice says. “It’d have to be near the Firecrafting Works because they’re milking all this green flame out of it. Furthermore, you’d want to keep it as underground as possible to help swallow up and absorb its power. It must make a lot of excess heat.”

“Which is what they needed so much water for,” you say. “Their cooling systems are hopefully running dry by now.”

“That’s where the shard would be under normal circumstances,” Abe says. “But what if this Iron Duke has moved it or placed it into lockdown somehow because of all this disruption?”
1/2
>>
>>1999819
“Moved it where?”

“I don’t know. His private office, maybe? It seems to be at the very top of the tower. If he had a vault that could contain it, where else would he put it?”

>It makes sense that they might relocate the shard in response to all this. You’ll be going up.

>You doubt they’d cease production and for that, they need the shard. You’ll be going down.
Fuck. Just have to guess. It'd be very hard to move for a normal human or especially a creature or witch. Plus without water it'd be too risky to keep it anywhere far away from the earth
>>
>>1999830
>You doubt they’d cease production and for that, they need the shard. You’ll be going down.
>>
>>1999861
Supporting, how would they transport it anyways? Do they have a spare lamp post laying around that can contain the shard?
>>
>>1999861
Support.

My reasoning is that transporting the shard is difficult, given how powerful and valuable it is. Since things seem to run fairly smoothly in Dis (at least in regards to the ruling organizations), there probably was no need to move it until now, so there probably isn't a system in place to do so. Meaning the shard and the duke are probably still at the bottom.

>>1999883
Speaking of, what are *we* going to do with it? Will it fit in the lamp with our one? Is it going to fuse with ours to make an even stronger shard? I'm scared.
>>
>>1999937
>No need to move it
I don't know about that. Dis, having so many factions, isn't exactly a safe place for political entities. They're surrounded by enemies. If the Consortium don't have a plan to move the shard, they deserve what they're about to get.
>What are we going to do with it?
Hopefully it fuses, but that's a valid point. Maybe it's already contained in something that's siphoning it's power; we could simply take the container, provided we can carry it.

“Do you think they’ve ceased production even now? I doubt it and for that they’d need the shard. They also wouldn’t be able to move it very easily. We’ll be going down.”

Beatrice presses the relevant button.
“I hear this Firecrafting Works is pretty large. It makes up all of the lower part of the tower and beyond. But I think I know just where the shard will be. It’ll be right at the bottom.”

With another grinding screech the elevator drops, leaving you all with a peculiar feeling in your stomachs as it does so.
“Never actually been on one of these before,” Beatrice says, pulling out her pistol. “I don’t think it’ll be too much to ask for for the Firecrafting Works to be empty too?”

“Not a chance,” Abe replies. “It’s almost certainly still going to be crowded. Do we have a plan for that?”

Beatrice just motions with her gun.
“Bang. All the plan we need.”

Before you can reply, the sound and the motion of the elevator changes.
“We’re slowing down!”
You inspect the little arrow at the top of the cage, the one sliding down between the various floors of the tower.
“This isn’t the Firecrafting Works! What’s going on?”

“Have we been found out already?”

“Oh, I’ve heard about this.”
Beatrice has gone pale.
“An elevator in motion can be called by other people while it’s still going. And it’s going to be in...the fucking Bottling Plant, whatever that is. Well...looks like we’re going to be shooting a little earlier than I thought.”

What an absurd idea. Why would anyone build a system like this? You were supposed to be heading straight down to your destination!

Using their contacts in Greenside, the Consortium rerouted several emergency water shipments that were intended to help douse the fires there and took them for themselves to help refill their cooling system's reservoir.

The Greenside Markets will suffer greatly for this as the fire continues unchecked but with the Blackcloaks cordoning off the tower, the chaos there no longer touches the Consortium.

>Hit a button before the bottling station and get off.

“There is no need to panic.”
You hastily press another button, changing your destination to the lowest floor in Shipments, right above the first floor of the Bottling Plant. You should be able to simply leave the elevator there, wait a small amount of time and then get back on!
“This will take some time but less so than simply fighting our way through the entire tower or trying to pass ourselves off as innocent.”

“Good idea,” Abe says. “I didn’t even think of that.”

The doors open to reveal a large concrete warehouse stacked high with empty barrels, each one bearing the Consortium stamp. They’re stacked in rows, each one nearly as tall as you! Naturally this means Beatrice can’t see over them at all.
“How is it?” she asks. “Is anyone else in here?”

“Keep your voice down,” you whisper, herding them out of the elevator. “We just need to stay here for a minute or so and then call another elevator.”

“Right.”

“Huh?”
That voice is new to you. Across the rows and rows of barrels, a little wooden door opens and an old man with a lantern full of green flame steps into the room.
“Is someone there?”

You and Abe duck down behind the stacks of barrels, thankful that your flaming sword had already flickered out while you were in the elevator. The old man, what little you can see of him through the gaps between barrels, shakes his head. The motion sends the shadows wheeling as he spins his lantern around.
“Guess not.”

Unfortunately for you, he doesn’t leave yet either. Instead he starts walking through the aisles created between the rows of stacked-up barrels, inspecting them one by one and whistling tunelessly. It doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

“Orion,” Abe hisses under his breath, motioning to something behind you.

You turn to see the elevator doors sliding shut. You can’t let that happen, he’ll hear the elevator screech as it moves back down and he’ll know that someone in here just used it! You grab hold of your staff as quickly and quietly as you can and swing it in between the closing doors!

Okay, here's an issue. Orion has an ability that lets any 3d6 rolls he makes relating to staves fall into the best order possible. That's normally pretty easy for me to do but in this case, I think it would be best if you lot decided what would be best.

Would you prefer that Orion stopped the elevator but made a noise in the process due to his staff striking a barrel as he swings it or would you rather he stays quiet but is unable to react quickly enough to stop the elevator doors from closing?

No, it’s no use! This space is too cramped for you to swing your staff so quickly and not make a sound! It would strike a barrel or the doors themselves or something. You pull your staff free but hesitate before you swing, making sure you can do it soundlessly. And in taking said time, you are too slow to stop the doors from closing.

The elevator descends towards whomever in the Bottling Plant had called it, making the familiar screeching of metal-on-metal as it does so. Through the gaps in between the stacks, you can see the old man look up.
“Huh? What was that?”

“Yeah Orion,” Beatrice whispers. “What was that?”

“I couldn’t swing in time! Why didn’t you do anything?”

“What was I supposed to do? Shoot it?”

The old man has stopped wandering and judging by the shifting light cast by his green lantern, is making a beeline for the elevator. Straight for where the three of you are hiding, in other words.

“Fuck,” Beatrice continues. “I guess we gotta kill him.”

Because it's a natural reaction and he would before we took him down. Meaning we either knock him out and waste multiple rounds and get security after us for him to wake up or he outs us.

Also you are advocating torturing a human which is against Orion's beliefs.

We have literally 2 rolls until security is abck up one of which will be for interrogating him another of which would be acting on that information. Minimum. Then the jig is up and we lose.

Do you know who is supposed to be here, and if they actually are? You don't get to ask questions, we're interested in what YOU know. Good now keep quiet so the traitor doesn't catch wind of us. Having cordoned off the burning Greenside and reallocated its emergency water shipments for the Consortium's own cooling system for the Firecrafting Works, the Consortium can now recall their security forces and use them to ensure that the water gets where it needs to be going quickly, establishing order in the Firecrafting Works in the process.

Though the lamps prevent calling in certain forms of security, the tower is nearly ready to resume operation again.

>9/47
>The Consortium selects to overexert their Internal Security to make sure that the Firecrafting Works are safe. This adds an additional dice roll to the Firecrafting Works roll at the cost of leaving the upper sections of the tower undefended and severely undermanned.

So you WANT witches and denizens of the dark hunter us in the deep under the earth. We're nowhere near it and you're lollygagging with someone of questionable import and torturing them for info they likely do not have. We're nowhere NEAR our goal and we're frankly going to have kill squads all over before we get close thanks to this bullshit.

In retrospect we should've based every decision on getting to the shard quickly instead of being stealthy. We drew most of the guards out with the fire and didn't even get close to our objective before they came back. It would've been better to go loud earlier while they were still gone.

We did.

Went straight through the grill

>Interrogate him under false pretenses.

You grab hold of your pistol, lowering the barrel to the ground.
“Not yet. I have another idea. This place employs witches, doesn’t it?”

“I’m almost certain,” she says. “What of it? I can’t pretend to be a worker here, witches would be officers at the very least.”

“That’s the point. We just need to grab him and you can show him you’re a witch. Tell him that you’re an inspector out to …”
You think quickly.
“Out to check for anyone who might sabotaged the contaminated shipments!”

“But why would I be hiding behind a bunch of barrels? He’d notice that.”

“No offense Bea,” Abe says, “but you’re rather short. You don’t need to be trying to hide behind the stacks for them to block your vision.”

“I became ageless before I had finished fully growing,” she says huffily. “What about you two?”

“He won’t be focussing on us. Just show him you’re a witch, tell him what’s going on and that you want to know what’s going on, what his name is and how this place functions. It’ll get us out of this and we might even learn something.”

“Just don’t take too long,” Abe says. “They must have noticed what we did to the shipping vent by now.”

“Fine,” Beatrice hisses. “Get behind me you two and try to look like dumb muscle. Not that that’ll be hard.”

The old man is about to round the corner when Beatrice steps out from behind the barrels, her gun shoved back into her deep coat pockets. She adjusts her cap, though no amount of adjustment in the world can hide her state of general disarray.

“Who are you?”

“Good evening, employee! If I may draw your attention here…”
Beatrice flips open the top button of her blouse, enough to show the brand just below her neck. You avert your eyes.
“I’m a witch, blah blah blah, spare me the general awe. I’ve just been brought in as a supervisor due to all this recent chaos with the contamination in the shipments. Give me your name and job first of all and tell me if you’ve seen anything suspicious.”
As an additional show, as she talks, she grabs hold of one of her fingers and slowly bends it back in a manner that, if performed by an ordinary human, would require at least two additional joints.

“You don’t look like a witch. Witches all look great! You -”

“I didn’t come here to receive backtalk from the general staff,” Beatrice says icily. “Give me your name and profession.”

“Right, right, wait. Do you have any certification?”

“Pardon?”

“You know, your papers? Your Consortium identification?”

“Uh...I…”
“I was warned that someone might try something,” he says. And then he turns and runs, no doubt trying to set off some sort of alarm!

“Stop.”
Beatrice sucks in her breath and, as the old man runs, blows a powder-laden breath behind her and past the tiny candleflame sprouting from the her left index finger. The fire flares up, sending her shadow seemingly skittering out onto the wall in front of the old man. He stops with a low groan and sinks to his knees. Beatrice extinguishes the flame immediately, dismissing the shadow.
“Do you know what a Shade can do to a human?”

“...No?”

“Oh, just about anything it wants really.”
She sounds like she’s enjoying this.
“Let me rephrase my offer. I am not your supervisor. I am, however, a witch of mysterious origin and purpose. And if you don’t tell me everything you know, I will make a death by shadow look merciful. Who knows, I might even give you over to the tender ministrations of my imp familiar here.”
She shoots you a sharp look. It’s not hard to figure it out.

With a sigh, you flip your heavy brown cloak back over your head and rise up, a large hooded shadow emerging from the stacks where none had been before.

When the old man finally turns back to face her, the shock of seeing you nearly makes him fall from his knees entirely.
“Wha-Where did-When did that get here!”

“You know how,” Beatrice says. He can’t see it but she’s massaging her burnt finger behind her back. “It’s none of your business why I look like this. Now tell me what I want to know and you can get out of this just fine. I want to help you, really, I do. But unless you tell the truth...well, best to just tell it eh?”

The old man quickly spills everything relevant and, as far as you can tell, none of it matters. Beatrice guides him through it quickly, running through it in less than a minute. None of it seems useful.

“Okay, last question! Are all the barrels in this warehouse empty?”

“Yes! The stacks closest to the door got left behind in all the rush about the bad barrels!”

“Good, good. Now get in.”
Beatrice motions towards an empty barrel.
“Yeah, you heard me. Get in.”

She watches as he forces himself into the barrel and once he’s somehow managed to crouch all the way in, she seals the lid back on.
“Fuck,” she says, wiping away sweat. “I hate pretending to be a witch.”

“What pretense?”

“Shut up Orion. You know what I mean.”

“It looked like you were having fun.”

“Excuse me,” Abe says. “What was the point of this! We’ve been wasting time and we didn’t learn anything useful!”

“Hold on,” Beatrice says, re-covering her brand. “That’s not wholly true. There are barrels in here that are still full.”

“And?”

“Green fire is flammable, you know! Look what happened in the Greenside fire or when I did my thing to the shipment! If we introduce them to real fire, I’m sure this whole place will go up in flames in no time at all! That’ll draw security here and might buy us a little more time.”

“By drawing them to us.”

Bring a barrel or two with us and ride the elevator down. When the fire starts guards will use the elevator to get up to the fire from the firecrafting works and when they do we'll drop a lit barrel through the hatch to incinerate the guards within. Then we'll start our all out attack.

I'll back this idea. We can always just leave the barrel behind.

Since the green flame kind of "flows" like water we could poke a hole in it and roll it at people etc. Then just light the flame trail that it leaks out maybe?

Or I wonder if we have anything like pouches that we could put some into and use like molotovs. Since regular flame doesn't burn Orion he could throw them around. Hopefully it would also conserve our wick if we're just using it to spark the green flame.

Well I hoped it would be helpful and figured that it was worth a shot. Sorry it didn't work out, but sometimes you have to fail forward.

I'm kind of used to less structured gaming and kind of let that influence me as well, figuring that if we interacted with him there would be a chance to get something useful out of him by either asking certain questions or rolling to see how useful he is.

I will try to remember that Ouro does it differently. In the future though, I would appreciate it if criticism was focused more on the benefits of different actions rather than on possible bad outcomes. Partly because I feel it's more constructive to work on competing plans together, partly also because shooting down plans can turn into merely an argument about proving negatives and speculation - in other words it turns into just working on one plan and building on imperfect premises instead of just taking or changing the original outline - and results in a more restricted vote.

And finally because don't give the GM ideas! Lol. I did notice in the last thread when we tried to fake being a Witch that Ouro integrated some of the criticisms of the plan into why it didn't work, to the point Bea as a DMPC had to save us.

Like I said, I'm glad you're passionate. But don't let it suckered you in so you can't enjoy the game even when people make bad decisions.

“This shouldn’t be too difficult,” you say. “If we light a fire here, they will surely all come running. As long as we can get out of Shipments before that happens it should be fine.”

“How are we going to do that?”

“Firstly, Beatrice, let that poor man out of the barrel. We’ll need to him to set off the alarm. Abe, head over to the door and start stacking all the full barrels together with one another. I’ll need some of your gunpowder for this, Beatrice.”

So. With how the interrogation plan worked out, was there anything we could have done differently that would have had a better result? Was the guy going to be useless no matter what, or was there a mechanic that determined it?

> Are we going to run into encounters where pic related is the right choice and we'll just rack up injuries or lose allies until we give up and flee?

I feel >>2001498 was a bit harsh about implying railroading, I mean we did get the option to increase our chaos meter again out of the encounter at the risk of fire. All the fire.
>>
>>2001620
I'll admit that the interrogation plan surprised me so it probably wasn't as fleshed-out as it could have been. In the end I just figured that the watchman of a storage room wasn't going to have any relevant information on your destination.

>railroading implications
I don't think they were implying railroading, I don't really do that outside of the whole overarching plot sense. They were just pointing out my tendency to adopt ideas raised in the thread as my own. I don't do this all the time but it does happen, it's pretty key to being able to write off the cuff.
>>
>>2001620
I wasn't implying railroading. Just that it's more of a set piece. Like it seemed the old guy was placed to be an obstacle so any interaction would be along that vein instead of having him be a "quantum character" whose role was undefined until we interacted with him. That's not railroading because it doesn't restrict our choices.

That's just how it felt to me, that could be completely wrong.

But let's leave that sort of discussion to the end or in the discord.

More that it's resolving at every decision point while Ouro is free to write stuff while we're choosing a decision.

Many of those tasks are happening within the same timeframe, so we won't see the effects until a certain point in the story where all the actions "link up" again. Probably when we reach the firecraft works.
>>
>>2001834
Well, part of it is because a lot of these actions were started quite a while ago and were being done simultaneously, some of them being started even before you began your descent! For example, you saw the Blackcloaks roaming around Greenside and trying to establish order while you were still doing your own Collective Effort.
>>2001842 also has the right idea here. I'm playing a bit fast and loose with the exact timeframe here, just like I do with the Inspector Interludes. Relative time has always been a bit unhooked in this quest, to tell the truth. Even in-universe!

You let Abe and Beatrice handle the old man as you hastily spill the gunpowder in your hands to form a brief trail, a line that leads from you to the barrels in question. They’ve been opened, the liquid green flame mixed with gunpowder and spilled in puddles around the stack. By itself, this pallid flame is quite inert and harmless. But you know for a fact that if it should come in contact with something truly of the flame, it can recover at least a little of its true nature.

Abe returns from the rooms beyond, his arms full of sheathes of paper and files. He’s already dragged out a wooden desk to help fuel the flames.
“I just hope that this buys us more time than it spends. And what are we going to do about the security?”

“I already have an idea for them.”
You push one of the full barrels on its side and kick it down the room towards the elevator. At last, this damnable flame will have a proper and righteous use once more.
“When they decide to investigate, how do you think they’ll get here? They probably won’t all take the stairs, right?”

“The elevator then?”

“I can scarce imagine they’d go to the trouble of building these contraptions if they didn’t put them to use.”
You finish setting up the gunpowder and start to make your way back to the elevator.
“Beatrice! Stop menacing the man and light the fuse!”

The resulting flame is an explosive one, loud and large and bright, enough to sear the eyes with glorious light. In that moment, the hand of darkness is loosed and the green flame returns to the true flame it once was. The inferno will probably be short-lived, the tower is not particularly flammable in any respect but while it might blaze short, it will blaze bright.
“After this and all else we have done tonight, all of Dis will know that there is nothing of ours that the Old Powers can claim that the Light cannot take back. The quenched flame can still burn just as bright, it just needs to be given the chance.”

Beatrice clutches her cap.
“You really think so?”

You shake your head.
“Not that far.”

The roar and crackle of the beautiful flames fill the resulting silence for a moment more before a moaning wail overrides all of it, a mechanical scream that echoes through the room and the rest of the tower, spreading through corridor after corridor through artificial means.

“The alarm! Then it should be time now!”
The three of you pile into the elevator and Abe presses the button for the lowest possible floor within the section marked FIRECRAFTING WORKS. The elevator descends with its customary screech but you don’t stand and wait around. No, you all have a plan to enact. You reach up and unhook the hatch set into the top of the iron cage. Abe is the first to climb up and out, extending his arm down afterwards to catch Beatrice’s hand and pull her up.
1/2
>>
>>2001906
You open the barrel, releasing the warm green flame to burn softly and feebly And with that done, you join the other two in balancing atop the elevator as it screams down towards its destination.

The shaft is dark and cramped, all of you doing your best to stay clustered together in the middle around the ever-unwinding cable.
“Hold on!” Abe shouts. “When this stops we gotta hold on!”

But you won’t be heading towards the lowest level in the Firecrafting Works. In fact, the elevator is already beginning to slow, being called to the uppermost level of the Works instead. Just as you anticipated, at least one of the security teams that will be racing towards the fire in Shipments is planning to use the elevator you’re standing atop of. No doubt all of the elevators in this entire damn tower are seeing similar use.
The elevator comes to a noisy stop at the uppermost floor of the Works, the doors sliding open to reveal something you cannot yet see, your view limited to the floor of the elevator below the open hatch and the gently burning barrel of green flame in the back of the elevator.

A man cautiously enters the elevator, clad in metal armour with a green tabard and leggings worn over the top. He’s holding a curiously shaped rifle, one whose barrel ends in a spout and is connected to a bulky backpack by a thick tube. That’ll have to do. You’ll need to spring the trap before they can become too suspicious.

Wick: 4/10

You set your staff alight and drop through the hatch, slamming the burning end into the open barrel. White light blooms as it explodes into flame, the fire coursing over and past you and leaving you unharmed. The same could not be said for the man in the elevator.

Beyond his crumpled form, three more men garbed in similar attire and bearing the same strange weapons stand there in dumbfounded shock. You don’t let them recover, instead burying one fist into the raging fire beside you and extending the burning staff towards them like the sights on a rifle. You can feel the Wick of the flame around you.

Wick: 5/5

And with but a gesture on your part, it rises up past your fist and passes through you, the flame dancing around you like a cloak. It travels from your fist to the hand holding your staff and in doing so, passes through your Flame Internal and is tempered and given purpose.
Sparing the old man was one thing. You have no mercy for those that would take up arms for dark masters. And you’d rather not learn just what those ‘guns’ of theirs actually do.

Wick: 0/5

The empowered Immolate bursts through the elevator doors in a single stream of flame, dropping the first of the three as a burning wreck. The other two stagger back but are apparently not seriously harmed, their helmets obscuring their faces from you.

You retake your wick and your still-burning staff and leap for the two of them before they can recover.

Wick: 5/10

He somehow finds both the time and the distance to pull raise his 'rifle' once again, pointing it directly at you! You prepare yourself to dodge and-

A deafening shot rings out, blowing a hole just a little smaller than your fist through the front of his helmet. You turn around to see Beatrice crouching in the scorched remains of the elevator floor, pistol clutched in her right hand.

"Thank you, Beatrice," the witch says. "Oh it was no problem, Orion. It's always nice to see you so grateful."

"Now's not the time! Everyone will have heard that!"

Abe drops down beside her, the elevator-cage rocking as he does so.
"I don't think this thing is safe anymore. It'd be best if we continued on foot."

You're standing in a short metal corridor, the only other features being a second set of elevator doors beside you and a small door set in the far end with the sign 'UPPER FIRECRAFTING. CERTIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY'.
Hopefully the majority of the tower's security will be up dealing with Shipments. But whoever is still down here will be coming along to investigate that gunshot any moment now.

>Let Abe study the weapon and look SLIGHTLY more like he should be here.

With the elevators such a huge chokepoint and all this greenfire, I'm tempted to just cut BOTH elevators down. After we take the sunshard, we just set barrel after barrel alight and 5/5 immolate up the stairs. Abe can carry up the barrels
>>
We really should dress Abe up in the green tabard and armor. He doesn't have any armor, and we might be able to use the fact that he's now in their uniform.

>>2002041
Doable, but I think there are more than two elevators.

Also, the same effect can be achieved by trapping the one and taking the other.

We don't have much in the means of trapping(fire delay of 30 secs), and we can't "take" an elevator. All our confrontations until now have been because we can't keep the elevator going downwards, and it will certainly go back up while we're getting the sunshard itself.
>>
I sort of want to see if we can take one of those Splooge Throwers or whatever they are for ourselves. Even if it isn't fire it's bound to do something nasty to the normal rank and file humans, and the disparity in combat power between our little resistance and anybody who isn't Orion or Beatrice is really high. At the very least Abe can start pulling his weight, and being able to douche people with whatever vile shit they have in the scum guns would certainly help that.

As far as taking these guys's armor and uniforms go, we really want to be careful with the latter. Not out of any regard for nonexistent treaties or war crimes, but because we don't want to risk Abe getting mixed up in a bunch of people. The Sun Cult's thing of having red shit somewhere on them is a good idea.
>>
Does changing the green fire into real fire require true flame that only a lamplighter possesses or could our little insurgent group also convert it with some training?

The tabard can be ditched after this raid, but he really needs some proper armor. I'd give some to Beatrice too, but she's too weak.

No one is interested in trapping the elevator, sending it to a different floor, or disposing of the bodies?

At the very least, we should make sure that the scene of the crime isn't apparent when they come to investigate the gunshot.
>>
>>2002173
We need to take advantage of the chaos we caused, no more wasting time. The fire won't last long.
>>
>>2002366
Causing more chaos, more casualties, will make it harder for them to catch us. Disposing of the bodies and crime scene will make it harder to track us. It will take time, but we can make up for it when the second elevator reaches us.

>Go through the door and into the Firecrafting Works proper. You can still do this without unnecessary fights.
>Give Abe the armour and weapon.

You think for a long moment, all too aware of the time ticking away as you do so. What’s your best way around all this? You kneel by the least disfigured body and start detaching the breastplate as best you can.
“Abe, you need the armour don’t you? I already have mine.”

He nods.
“That makes sense but what about Beatrice? She doesn’t have anything more armoured than her coat.”

“I’m not wearing that shit,” Beatrice says. “Too heavy.”

Abe pulls the breastplate free.
“Right. Are you still feeling alright?”

“I’m fine,” she grumbles. “I’ve got plenty of powder, I can still take out an advance on myself.”

:Just do it quick.”
You stand by the door with your staff ready to intercept anyone that might burst into the corridor.
“I’m sure we got someone’s attention with that gunshot.”

“So stealth has failed us,” Beatrice says. “It was a good run.”

“Not just yet. I think we can still do this without getting into unnecessary fights.”

“I’m not going to be able to get this whole thing on time,” Abe says. He’s struggling with the leggings.

“That’s fine. Just the breastplate and the helmet should be a huge help. You can wear the tabard and the leggings over that and people probably won’t notice.”

Abraham works the helmet free and then sucks in his breath as he does so.
“Ah.”

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing. I just didn’t expect him to be so young.”

“What do you mean?”
Beatrice steps over to join him looking down upon the corpses face.
“Well darn. I guess they start training early.”

You refuse to join them. What’s done is done and no use can be found in sentimental regret.
“Let’s go.”

“...Sure.”
Abe shoulders the large backpack first, lifting the strange gun with it and passing his old rifle back to Beatrice.
“It might be best if I carry this. I’m sure it’s very dangerous and it’ll help me pass a little better.”

You open the door to Upper Firecrafting and in doing so, expose yourself to a ferocious din. The three of you are now standing on a black metal balcony overlooking a massive facility that extends for hundreds of feet in every direction and goes down further than you can see through the smoke. Lines of flowing green flame crisscross vast metal mechanisms, collecting in pools and reservoirs before being dumped into moving vats that are lifted from one floor to the next through great chained elevators of their own. You can see straight down into the floors below as the Firecrafting Works are less a series of discrete floors and more a single vast and open cavern with different platforms at different levels.
Here, the green flame is distilled, diluted, focussed and perverted, all depending on what grade and quality each batch is meant to be. Small flows of water pipe down constantly from the ceiling, mixing with the liquid flame in most cases and cracking into steam against the most potent batches. Workers in protective suits swarm over each platform diligently under the watchful eye of the green-armoured soldiers. The sound of metal grinding upon metal, of the crackling of flame and the hiss of steam...it’s enough to have swallowed Beatrice’s gunshot. Perhaps it didn’t alert them after all?

“Hold up,” Abe says. “We’ve got company!”

Down below, on the next platform below, a small security squad is climbing up the rickety metal stairs that link one platform to another. They can’t see you from their angle but they’re still running up right towards the elevator. Their pace isn’t as fast as it could be so you’d guess that the sound was muffled even for them. They clearly didn’t identify it as a gunshot.
Still, their pace doesn’t really matter. The moment they see you, you’re all in trouble.

>Ambush them when they come up.

>They might be using the only stair but that doesn’t mean you still can’t descend. Just climb down to the next platform.

>Have Beatrice and Abe pick them off at range.

They're naturally channelized on the stairs, would be ideal to hit them right as they come up that and basically bowl them right back down.

However, a bunch of assclowns falling down the stairs probably would alert their fellows to what's going on, so it'd be best to pincer them against the elevator if we still care about stealth (which we should despite an alarm being raised outside, there's a lot of fighters down here from the look of it)

>The stairs will channel them. Take them out there and you might even be able to push them off entirely.

“Take them as they come up from the stairs. Easiest way.”

Abe nods as he takes up position along one side of the barrier built around the edges of the platform, no doubt to prevent those with errant feet from falling off the edge.
“They’ll have to come up one at a time. Beatrice, you hang back a little behind us.”

“Don’t have to tell me twice.”
She holds the sword awkwardly, clearly untrained and unpracticed in such things. Well, she shouldn’t have to do much, as long as she remembers which end to hold away from her face she should be fine.

The first of the guards is taken entirely by surprise as he runs up the stairs, your staff whipping out to catch him around the neck and collarbone as he rises and causing his legs to give way beneath him due to his own momentum. Abe clubs him around the helmet as he falls and pulls him up onto the landing, rolling him back behind the two of you.
In the periphery of your vision you see Beatrice, runesword clutched tightly in both hands, plunge her blade straight into the helpless man who was now lying at her feet.

While this is taking place, you are already moving to stand at the top of the stairs with your staff held out to bar the way. The other three guards have had barely any time to react and the foremost is still walking forward. You drive the iron-shod tip of your staff right into his chest with the weight of your body behind it, all that force concentrated into a single point. Breastplate or breastplate or not, the force alone is enough to drive him back, his feet slipping on the stairs and falling backwards down into his two comrades!
This staggers them and prevents them from bringing their own strange weapons to bare as you give the falling man another prod, driving him and the other two he is leaning against further back in the cramped confines of the staircase.

“Orion, to the side!”

You recognise Abe’s voice and lean upon the railing as he comes down past you with his own spout-rifle held at the ready. He pulls the trigger, letting loose a thin but concentrated spray of some clear fluid down upon the three disarrayed men below. It collects in oozy droplets entirely unlike water upon the stair and upon their armour and even though their suits should protect them from whatever it is, it is enough to give them pause as they scramble back until their backs are up against the staircase’s railing. The man you had already struck collapses to the floor as his two friends stop supporting him.

You stride forward, driving your armoured boot into the fallen man’s abdomen as you do so. You whirl your staff around to strike the two trapped men two times each, knocking the ungainly spout-rifles from their hands. They reach for sidearm blades but you keep their hands empty and their minds reeling long enough for Abe to charge down the stairs and ram his shoulder into one of them! He goes over the top of the railing with a muffled cry, falling into a vat of steaming green flame. Abe grabs hold of the other one by arm and you assist him by tackling him, grabbing him around the abdomen in a bear hug and then, with Abe’s help, forcing him over the railing as well.

Blood sluggishly flows down the stairs above you as Beatrice executes the man you had left lying upon the stair.

“Did anyone see that?”
The workers below seem to be labouring with a single-minded intent, their heads bowed and their faces covered in protective masks that no doubt impede their vision.

“I don’t thin-”

“Oi!”
Beatrice points and you can’t help but frown as you follow her gaze. While most of the Firecrafting Works seems to have ignored you, the general din and the already stretched nature of security on account of the fire in Shipments serving to drown out this fight as effectively as it had Beatrice’s gunshot before, you can see more soldiers up on a high platform all the way on the other side of the artificial canyon that are pointing and gesturing at the three of you. They’re shouting but you can’t hear any of it over the hissing and clanging of the Fireworks.

“It’ll take some time for them to even get over to us,” Beatrice says hopefully.

“That is if they don’t mobilise anyone else,” you tell her. “I doubt that.”

>10/47
>The public manner in which you engaged the guards has reduced the disorder score by 5.

“Hey!”
Abe interrupts the two of you. He’s leaning up against the side of the stairway, breathing heavily.
“Look over there. Doesn’t that look interesting to you?”
He points to the single central stream of turgid green flame that goes through all of the Works, all other streams, vats and distilleries mere tributaries. The stream’s origin point is set into one of the far walls, a large grated tunnel from which the liquid fire slops out endlessly. And thirty feet above that tunnel, a thick door not unlike the kind you’d find in a vault. Seven soldiers stand at ease around it, arrayed in a casual formation.
“That’s our target right there.”

>You can’t afford to waste time! Just run along the walkways suspended over the entire system. It’s quite visible but it’s the most direct route.

“Speed is of the essence. This way!”

The three of you run down the stairs and then immediately run up another set, grabbing hold of the railings to steady yourselves upon the rickety metal contraptions. There is a set of walkways suspended far above the main body of the Firecrafting Works that are mostly empty but are plainly visible to just about everyone working below, should they simply tilt their heads upwards.
Running along it and then down is also the most direct route across the bulk of the Works, a relatively flat expanse without the obstacles of fire and machinery. You’ve all had a relatively easy time of it thus far thanks to your prior preparations and what is paramount is not caution nor safety, simply time. The time before your hard-bought chaos wears thin.

Beatrice and Abe follow you without any question as you leap onto the first of many catwalks hanging above the green and black void below. Out of the corner of your eye you can see the soldiers who saw you ascending up to their own edge of the upper walkways but they shouldn’t have the time to catch you before you all make it to the fire’s origin. It seems like that those odd spout-rifles don’t have much range.

You are nearly halfway across when a hideous metallic squeal blares out loud enough to drown out even the Firecrafting Works below. You spin about, attempting to find the source of the noise but all you find are several pillars suspended from the ceiling above the Works, each one bearing a cluster of conical loudspeakers. The piercing tone is coming from them and in response, you see the workers below slow their production and start looking up.

“Oh f-”
Beatrice’s profanity is drowned out by the immense voice that rings out through the loudspeakers, harsh and grating and paired with a drone of high-pitched feedback.

”ATTENTION. ATTENTION. ALL SECURITY, RETURN TO YOUR POSTS. THE INTRUDERS ARE NOT IN SHIPMENTS. THEY ARE COMING FOR THE CORE OF THE FIRECRAFTING WORKS. RETURN TO YOUR POSTS. DEFEND THE CORE.

The workers below you start shouting and pointing as they see you stranded up far above on the catwalks. The guards quickly follow their lead and start to holler, the united bedlam of throat and tongue drowning out even the Firecrafting Works for just a moment. And then the security teams all begin to ascend, climbing up towards you to cut you off!

The three of you keep running. What else can you do? The guards around the vault door are standing at attention now, their spout-rifles arrayed out in a rough battle-line. Three of them also seem to be struggling with some sort of vast gun, something as long as a man and mounted upon a squat tripod that has to be physically manhandled to follow your movements.
It points up towards you…
1/2
>>
>>2004643
“Watch out!”
You jump to the side as something tears through the bottom of the iron lattice that is the walkway, tearing through metal and causing the entire catwalk to shake like mad. You’re left staring at the thick metal spear embedded in the roof beside you, the projectile as thick as your arm and about twice as long.
A second of the great machines is brought to bear and fires, a mighty backwash of boiling steam blasting out from behind it. The second spear strikes the bottom of the catwalk again, threatening to shake the entire thing loose!

“Orion!”

Abe grabs hold of your hand as you nearly slip and together, the two of you leap onto a more stable platform where Beatrice is already waiting. She has her pistol out and is already firing, her bullets leaving searing traces in the air as they fly unnaturally far. One of the men manning the giant spearguns falls, several shots blowing through his armour.
“What the fuck are we going to do?”

The guards that were once patrolling the bottom of the Firecrafting Works are all still climbing upwards, several squads already spilling out onto the upper walkways from every edge of the room. And through the din, you hear the now-familiar screech of elevators as at least three of them slide home in different landings scattered around the cavern.

If we were in the river of flame right now it'd be a ridiculous amount. A single barrel was worth 5 wick which makes an immolate strong enough to kill a man outright. The only issue is the limited range of all of our flame arts.

>No need for risk. You’ll fight your way through steadily and safely. Have Beatrice keep the spearguns unmanned while you and Abe protect her as you make your way across the walkways.

“Should we just go for it?”
Beatrice’s voice is rising, panic creeping into her tone as she fires again.

It’s tempting...but no. You bear the last and greatest flame of God, you have a duty to it that makes you responsible for what happens next.
“No. Listen up, you two! There is nothing here that we cannot stop! Just keep moving and we’ll make it!”

“What about those spearguns?”
Abe points his spout-rifle futilely at the massive steam-powered guns as their attendants reload and spray them with hoses to keep them cool.
“Another few shots of those and it won’t matter what we do!”

“Beatrice, can you handle them?”

“Uh...I don’t know!”

”Can you handle them?”

“Yes!”

“Then we just have to protect her while she does that and we’ll be moving all the while. Go!”
You look back to see the green-cloaked guards swarming up the sides of the Works. You have faith in Beatrice to shoot true, her gun has always steadied her hand. But can you and Abe really hold off all the guards that’ll reach you while you run? Beatrice can’t run that fast, she’s the slowest of all of you.

>Just go as you said. It’ll be fine.

>Pick up Beatrice and let her sit upon your shoulders. She’ll still be able to shoot and she won’t slow you down.

I don't know about this guys... On one hand I don't like our odds of just sprinting in a straight line while being shot at. And I also don't like leaving Abe and Beatrice on their own. On the other hand if we light the river and it flows straight to the shard it could clear us a path all the way to it. Lemme think about it for a sec.
>>
>>2004769
Those troops are still going to be there after we claim the sunshard. We lost the chance the cut the elevator, but we can still bleed them of a good chunk of their forces so we're not completely flanked against the Iron Duke.

Dangit, missed by a minute.

Oh well, hopefully on our way back out we can activate our trap card.

On a different note, should we try to destroy the Firecraft Works? We're stealing their shard, but the Viridian Consortium is very important to Dis, probably more important than one of the other sinners. I expect that if we left the machinery functioning, a sunshard will respawn here.
>>
>Pick up Beatrice and let her sit upon your shoulders. She’ll still be able to shoot and she won’t slow you down.

“Hold up, Beatrice. A moment.”

“What? Hey!”

She flinches away as you reach out for her and pick her up, bundling her across your shoulders.
“Let’s go, Abe! Keep the spearguns clear Beatrice!”

“Wait! Wait!”
She writhes around as you run, grabbing hold of your back.
“I can’t shoot shit from here, hold on! Hold on!”

You don’t slow down, leaving it to the former witch to move on her own accord, almost sliding off your shoulder as she tries to reposition herself.
“What are you doing back there?”

“I can’t shoot while you lug me around like a sack of potatoes! Here!”
She wraps her arms around your neck and lets herself slip off your shoulder, nearly throttling you in the process.

“Orion! Left!”
That’s Abe, the former barkeep levelling the spout-rifle and firing off a warning spray at an approaching guard. They’ve gotten a lot closer thanks to all this fooling around, the closest within ten feet. He jumps to the side to avoid the spray and you knock him to the floor with a staff blow to the head, Beatrice swinging around behind you as you whirl.

“There!”
She hoists herself up onto your shoulders, her legs framing either side of your head as she sits atop you awkwardly, teetering and nearly falling in the process.
“Grab hold of my legs. This’ll be the first and last time someone ever asks you that!”

You are quickly growing tired of this foul woman but you do as she says, grabbing hold of her feet around your chest to steady her. You keep running, curving out to the edge of the platform in an attempt to stay ahead of the advancing guards.

“You better plug your ears, Orion!”

“I can’t!”

“Right! Well then! This is going to suck for you!”

Her pistol goes off right next to your head.

You can feel your pulse setting you aflame, almost literally in some cases, beating a mile a minute as it pushes your hateful blood through your body. Every beat is another drip from your nose, another involuntary reddish tear, a hint of iron in your mouth and a new bruise blooming somewhere on your skin.

But isn’t the feeling amazing? You feel alive!

Granted, you mostly feel alive because the alternative is feeling very, very dead the instant these fools catch you and you have no intention of that. The other reason you feel alive is because you’re all hopped up on gunpowder, wrapping yourself in a kind of joyful pain that will return as just regular pain soon enough when it comes time to pay the bills.
You’re trying not to think about that right now.

Your name is Beatrice Montgomery and everyone is counting on you! You’re not used to that. At the very least it should be more begrudging or hateful. But it isn’t and you don’t know how to feel, you don’t have room for anything really, not after the sawtooth panic and the beautiful self-harming gunpowder rush have had their way with you.
You also have the Lamplighter’s head between your legs but not in a particularly enjoyable way.

>Beatrice works along a dice modifier scale that is constantly being applied to all her physical actions save those related to shooting. This scale runs from -6 to +6 and has been seen in previous Collective Effort rolls. Taking gunpowder normally alters her modifier by +2, a bonus that will eventually flip and reverse to a -2 penalty. Snorting gunpowder does the same but by a +4. If left alone Beatrice tends to stabilize at a -2, her default state of feeling like absolute shit. The lower the modifier the worse she feels and if she ever hits -6 she falls unconscious and possibly dies in her sleep. The modifier going into the positive is also unpleasant, prompting brief fits of hyperactivity and strained heart activity. The higher the modifier goes into the positive, the quicker it will decay and flip into a penalty. Beatrice gains 2 charges every time her modifier changes by 1 in either direction. These charges can be used for a number of shitty techniques that make her feel bad and also shooting her gun which makes her feel good.

>Current modifier is +2

>Current Charges: 12

And now it’s up to little old you to take out those two spearguns. You don’t have any problem aiming now, even as the world swirls around you like a giant technicolour bruise. Your hand is always steady as long as you have your gun. The guns and the men around them swim into crystal focus like the lens of scope.

1/2
>>
>>2004896
The first gun has three men on it, the second has four. Each of the giant machines needs at least two people to operate it, you reckon. One to fire and one to move it about and aim. So you’ll need to kill at least five people right now. And they’re all wearing armour too! The last one you shot down needed three unexplosive bullets to the gut before he fell.

You’ll have to spend some charge.

>It costs Beatrice a charge to fire her pistol without having to bother about any of the regular mundanities and practicalities of gun use. She can also spend +1 charge to make a bullet explode on impact and another +1 to make them set fires wherever they strike. Additionally, she can also spend a charge to add +2 to her shooting rolls for accuracy, even over long distances. This last bonus can stack and applies to all shots she makes in a single roll.

You point your pistol at the first gun crew, the one with only three people in it.

Well, there’s no point in doing this if you’re not going to do it right. Everyone is depending on you to get this done as quickly as possible!

You take aim at the crew of the first speargun, ignoring the rest of the changing, moving world around you. You hold your pistol out in both hands, tracking your target as Orion moves.

Three targets...and you need at least two to strike home. You’ve got this!

You fire three shots in quick succession, the bullets leaving lines of light hanging in the air for a few brief instants to mark their passage. You can feel your blood boil inside of you, the cruel and capricious fire going from twisting within your gut and gland and blood to spiralling within the bullets that you send forth, more heat than metal.

The drumbeat of your ever-quickening heart marks a victory beat as the three attendants fall with barely visible flickers of burning gunpowder marking where the strength of your captured flame has shredded armour and burned flesh.
The giant gun falls to the platform below as they collapse. It promptly vanishes from your frenzied perception.

>Current Charges: 8

The sound of the gun is loud but the scream within your head is louder. You blink furiously, doing your best to keep your sight free of a creeping red film.
This is all up to you. The less time you take here, the less time Orion and Abe will have to fight for you.

Not that you're paying attention to whatever they're doing, that is. You swing your pistol around to the second speargun and the world around you shrinks to just you, your gun and the four armoured figures manning it.

Four this time...You'll need all three shots to hit in order to disable it.

The speargun swings upward, tracking right up towards you and Orion. You pull the trigger before they do.

Okay, let's end this foolish POV switch before it gets out of hand.

You grit your teeth as the cacophony of Beatrice's pistol breaks the air around you. You're starting to regret ever letting her up there! But you can't deny that it's saved you a lot of time and she does seem to be handling those damnable cannons below.

Abe is running beside you, having dropped his spout-rifle in favour for his actual one, letting the strange weapon dangle from his heavy backpack. He's taking shots as best he can at the approaching soldiers as you move.
He's nowhere near as accurate as Beatrice but he's been doing a lot to ward them off since you have both hands full at the moment.

You try not to think of what both hands are currently full of. You are willing to endure any number of indignities now that you've come so far and are so close.

The large metal door is just up ahead, now sealed shut and with six guards lined up in front of it.

"How are we going to get through that?"
Abe attempts to reload, dropping the rifle and swearing as it jams.
"They're on us from all sides! I can't keep them off our back anymore!"

“Our back isn’t important! We’re going straight through!”

You start running faster, abandoning any caution in favour of a mad dash across the only remaining safe path through the catwalks, the only one not yet crawling with guards! Beatrice yelps as she nearly falls, grabbing hold of your shoulders with one hand and holding her pistol upright with the other.

“How?”
That’s the only word Abe has the energy to scream as he does to keep pace with you.

You don’t respond. It’s all you can do to keep running, the thunderous sound of the metal beneath your armoured feet mixing with the shouts of the workers below, the battlecries of the guards on your tail and the crackle of the pale flame down below..

The flame…

You run across the final catwalk, the suspended walkway just 10 feet above the platform with the armoured door leading deeper towards the source. Greencloaked guards are swarming to either side of it and you can hear them right behind you, the whole platform shaking with the collective vibration of their footsteps.
And then you hear a third speargun fire and the walkway shudder beneath you, nearly throwing you off entirely! Beatrice shrieks as she grabs hold of the railing beside you, twisting and turning as she dangles above the Firecrafting Works below! Abe vaults ahead of you as a spray of clear liquid splatters against your shoulder pad.

You drag Beatrice up and with the soldiers closing in, take your final option.
“Shoot! Shoot the river!”

She fires without hesitation, the burning bullet sinking into the slurry of concentrated green fire spilling out of the tunnel. At the same time, you grab hold of her and spread your cloak and kneel with your back between her and the river that is below and behind.

You already somewhat deafened ears don’t hear all of what follows but there is a roar and a wave of blistering heat that seems to have an almost physical force behind it and a blinding white light.

……

Vision returns slowly, covered in blooms and blisters of false colour but you don’t need to see all that well to know that the Firecrafting Works are ablaze with pure and honest orange flame. The workers who are still alive are thrashing and wailing as it rises in great pillars and douses them. The guards are screaming too, a spray of molten flame hurled by the initial explosion having blasted the entire catwalk.
Drops of flame sizzle harmlessly against your armour and skin.

But wait! If that happened, then Beatrice-!

Beatrice is unharmed, protected by not just you but also by Abe who is crouched down opposite of you to protect her other side. Anything to prevent her explosive blood igniting. She blinks.
“T-thanks?”

1/2
>>
>>2007370
“Are you alright, Abe?”
You lost nothing shielding her, for all flame but the greatest and the grandest is your trusted ally. But the same cannot be said for Abraham.

“I’m fine,” he says, grimacing. “Just fine. Let’s go.”

The catwalk, battered and broken by all that has been done, chooses this time to come apart and fall away beneath your feet, the entire walkway falling ten feet before crashing onto the platform just before the armoured door.
The six men that had been guarding it are writhing on the ground or have fled. They were too close to the fire.

You give the one still moving the most a swift kick to the head just in case.

“I didn’t think we’d be killing so many actual people,” Abe wheezes. “Did you?’

You harden your heart as best as you are able and speak a silent prayer for the children of flame who had lost their way among the valley of shadow.
“Nothing can be done about it. They made their choice.”

The door, impressively, has held against the force of the blast, only being knocked just a little bit ajar. It looks like you might all have to shift this beast yourselves.

The door that you had been struggling to move aside swings wide open after Beatrice lends her aid, the witch pulling it open so fast that you nearly let go.
‘What’s wrong, Orion? Are you tired or something? Didn’t know you needed the assistance of someone as little and weak as me.”
She’s panting and through a tear in her gloves, you can see dark bruises mottling around her hand.

“Thank you, Beatrice.”

You and Abe step past the threshold, at which point Beatrice jumps in behind you, swinging the door in behind as she does so. It slams shut, the bolt sliding home once more.
“I’d like to see them get through that! Whatever’s down here, we have them all to ourselves.”

Abe stares at her.
“That was incredible. How did you do that?”

“Oh, I’m just fucking brilliant is all. Someone’s got to be muscle around here I guess.”
She’s vibrating slightly, jittering from side to side in the darkness.
“Can we get a little light in here?”

“There’s no need for that,” you tell them. “Just look down and allow your eyes to adjust.”

A faint green glow emanates from thirty feet below, a soft and mellow half-light that doesn’t so much illuminate your surroundings as it does cast it into lesser darkness. The three of you are standing on a platform thirty feet above the trickling river of viridian fire, the one that feeds into the Firecrafting Works behind you and vanishes through a tunnel up ahead.
A rickety steam-powered elevator cage stands beside the platform, the tracks that’ll take it diagonal down to the mouth of the tunnel that swallows the flame just faintly gleaming in the light.
“Looks like we’ll be taking this one for the final descent. Any objections.”

Beatrice huffs.
“Why isn’t this stuff on fire? I guess it didn’t climb up all the way back here.”

“That doesn’t matter right now,” Abe says. “Let’s just get on the elevator and get this done.”
He winces as he speaks, clutching his side.

“Are you okay?”
Beatrice helps him into the elevator.

“I just took a bit of a burn back there. It’s nothing really.”

The elevator begins its descent with one final grinding screech. There are only seconds left now, the tunnel below that feeds the river growing larger and larger with every passing moment. If there was anything left to do or say, now is the time.

>Perform a Benediction on Abe.
>Check on Beatrice’s gunpowder.
>Inspect the effects of the spout-rifles.

“Hold still,” you say as the elevator cage rattles ever downwards down the 30 foot slope towards the river. “I will ease your pain.”

Wick: 2/10

You take your wick in your left hand and raise your right, white light blossoming forth from its palm. Beatrice shies away as you press it to Abraham’s forehead in a sign of blessing. A Benediction of Relief to be exact, bolstering his natural healing factor and imbuing him with healing light.

“And one more thing,” you continue.

Wick: 1/10

You use the Benediction of Succor to pass on one point of Wick to Abe, feeling the small piece of your Flame Internal travelling down your arm and into him. He staggers back, his back pressed up against the bars that line the elevator.
“What..?”

“You have a Wick within you, do you not? You may have never trained it, may have never known how, but it still smoulders within you for you are of the light. I have breathed life into those embers. As long as you hold that small flame within you, you shall be safe from any Flame Rite that I might loose upon what awaits us.”

“Whoopy,” Beatrice says. As she did before, she seems to grow moody upon seeing your blessings. “I’ll still get burnt to a crisp though.”

“And whose fault is that? You’ll just have to stay back and support from a distance. How is your...your power?”
You’re not sure how to frame it. Calling it witchcraft might be a little much but you don’t want to give her the idea that it is in any way equal to the holy flame of Man which she surrendered of her own will.

“All good,” she says, saving you the trouble. “I’m still riding high right now and if I need more I’ll get more, simple as that.”

“And what about the backlash?,” Abe asks.

“Let me handle myself. What about you, huh? Think that fucked up backpack-gun will do you any good?”

“I have no idea what it does,” he admits. “It doesn’t seem to have any effect on Orion’s armour but everyone treated it like it was fearsome. I’ll give it a try.”

The elevator grinds to a halt, jarring all of you.
Before you is a circular tunnel and though it is walled with steel and concrete, you can almost smell the presence of the earth. There’s a faint coldness to this place, even as the concentrated green flame flows by. You are all beneath the earth.

The river of pallid fire continues through the tunnel beneath a metal grille, one set in place so that people might walk through and be unharmed. The three of you do so, the soft light of the river your only light. You think briefly on unveiling the lamp post before you even arrive but in the end you stay your hand. You don’t know if they know of your trump card yet or not and even if they do, producing the lamp-post earlier than you need to might just invite them to attack it somehow. If it was to be destroyed…

1/3
>>
>>2008125
You can’t think about that.

You offer up a silent prayer as you walk through the tunnel, metal gleaming green as you pass. It’s not as long as it had initially appeared and the room at the end of it comes into view within seconds of setting foot in the passage.
It is a large spherical chamber wrapped in walls of stone and metal, clearly designed to withstand the strongest of blasts. Where else could they contain a piece of the Sun?

The tunnel meets with the spherical room halfway up, becoming a bridge that spans the sealed chamber. The room is empty save for an even smaller chamber contained within, a ball of concrete that lies suspended in the very center, pinned in place by immense steel spokes that radiate inwards from the walls of the outer chamber. Liquid green flame oozes forth from the bottom of the inner sphere, filling the bottom
The bridge you have just now stepped upon leads directly to this inner room, the place where it meets cut off by a thick steel tall enough for two men.

And as the three of you step towards it, the door unseals itself and swings open. Heat flows out, enough to make Beatrice cower behind the two of you. It is dark within, apparently empty save for the oppressive heat, the stench of burning metal and a slow grating sound whirring away from within.

And then something within the darkness falls away, a great containment cylinder briefly splitting apart to reveal something brilliant and bright within for just a moment. The flash of light is enough to make your two companions shield their eyes but for you, one who has gazed upon the sun many times before, it is nothing that will make you avert your gaze.

So it is that you see, in that brief flash of light, a dark figured hunched down before the captive sun, one long and slender arm grasping a lever.

“What was that?”
“Is that-”

The unseen mechanism in the darkness continues to spin, revealing the shard one more time and showering you with another flash of blinding light. And in that flash you see that the hunched figure has vanished. Instead, an inhumanly tall silhouette stands in the doorway framed in the light.

“Lamplighter, I presume? And the rest of you.”
The voice, like everything else in this damned tower, sounds metallic. It is the screech of the elevators, the shriek and squeal of protesting iron. It is a deep and wretched thrum that you feel through the soles of your feet just as much as you do with your ears.
“The excruciation mechanism can operate without its supervision for...ten minutes, within a small margin of error. In the interests of maintaining production, I will take you three apart within this timeframe.”

Here you are. It’s taken thirty long years and uncounted miles of distance but you finally stand before one of the seven who cast down the Sun. There can be no doubting it.

Ok. Yeah, Bea and Abe, back up and take fire. Those shots probably won't don't anything to him, but it will help split his attention. Orion move forward to strike with the staff.

Wick: 1/10

His voice might be inhuman and threatening enough but his actual words are banal, almost insultingly so. But still, it clears up any potential confusion remaining. This is the Iron Duke, despoiler of the flame, master of the Consortium and one of the slayers of God.
And if he’s willing to talk, you’re willing to let him choke on those words!”

You call out before he’s even finished speaking, pointing at him.
“Open fire!”

Beatrice fires first, her explosive shot hitting the silhouette before and throwing off sparks. Abe fires the spout-rifle as this happens, the liquid bouncing off the Iron Duke harmlessly. A second shot from Beatrice causes the shadowy figure to waver and you sieze that moment to run forward!

You charge down the narrow bridge, unhooking the burden from your back as you do so. You can feel the hidden power of the lamp begging to burst free as you close the distance, raising it and-

The Iron Duke extends a hand into the light. It has claws instead of fingers and is covered in metal armour...no! It is metal! The Duke steps out of the doorway, a creaking monstrosity of baroque black metal joined together in the shape of a man. He is a long and angular metal beast, as if someone took a metal man and stretched it out grotesquely, a cylindrical head like a smokestack topped with a jagged steel crown above a metal torso larger than your entire body, joints set in it giving rise to clawed arms and legs and whipping and banging across the bridge, a long spinal tail almost as long as they rest of his body.
His left claw still faintly glows orange from where it had been tending to the captured sun and it seems otherwise unharmed. There is no flesh to burn, no bone to scorch.

The tail lashes out in front of him and you have to slow your charge lest it knock you off your feet. Instead it smashes into the bridge just in front of you and with a mighty effort, you leap over it and continue your attack!

“Draw forth your shard!”
The harsh voice echoes through the chamber, somehow dwarfing the gunshots.
“You will burn to ash from it long before I do!”

>You’re sticking to the plan. Unveil the lamp post and smite him!

>Draw your staff instead and try to push him off the bridge.

The machine is literally built to cause pain. And if we're willing and able to stall for ten minutes, he'll be distracted.
>>

>Draw your staff instead and try to push him off the bridge.
Then we can tamper with the controls, mightily annoying him.
>>
>>2008461
The 'excruciation mechanism' is the name for the big spinny thing that pulls forth the green flame in its purest form directly from the shard. It's probably not a pleasant process.
>>
>>2008469
Adding

>Tell Abe to fire at the controls. This ought to be something of a distraction. Whether or not Abe hits anything important, it ought to throw the Iron Duke off his game. He'd have to attempt to position himself between the gunners and the machines.

I dig this a whole lot.
>>
>>2008512
Honestly, it's a risky play. Abe might shoot something essential to keeping the shard alive. But it's just too good a tactical play to not do it.

The other problem with it is that he'll fight to stay in front of the machines, when I want him to be by the bridge so we can push him off with the staff. We could however tell Abe to shoot right when he's already by the bridge, make him waver.

>Draw your staff instead and try to push him off the bridge.
>Tell the others to open fire on the machine within the containment sphere.

You dodge past the writhing tail and in response to his taunt, appear to reach for your bundled-up lamp-post…

...and then pull your staff free instead!

You can use the monster’s size against him! You duck underneath his arm and holding the staff our horizontally, slam it right into his metal chest! You manage to salvage most of your momentum and you send all of that straight into the Iron Duke when you collide with him. He shakes and slowly tips back up against the railing of the bridge, his ungainly top-heavy body threatening to tip him over the edge and into the small pool of fire below!

You press up against him as you do your best to push him just enough to send him toppling, your armour grinding up against grimy metal. Seeing it this close, that ornate black metal seems deeply familiar...as if you’d seen it before somewhere. But you don’t have the time to think!

“Abe! Beatrice! Fire at that thing inside there! The machine!”

“But what if we shoot the shard?”

“Just do it!”
If you can damage this machine he seems to care so much about, you may be able to control his movements! You’ll force him to stay between you and the inner sphere!

You hear metal creak above you and look up to see the Iron Duke’s left shoulder rotating around a full 180 degrees so that his great clawed hand is now poised right above you and your staff.

“Refrain from this idiocy.”
Just as you prepare for the final push, his claw slams down on top of you!

>4, 1, 2

You dip to the side and step out of the way just in time as the claw slams down into the bridge where you were standing just a moment ago! You aren’t fast enough to save your staff however and for a moment you just stare mutely at the splintered remains, the other half of your old reliable fighting staff falling into the pool of fire below. He had cleaved straight through it without stopping. It hadn’t even been hard.

You’re forced to roll backwards a moment later as his second claw scythes through the air just above you and then again as his tail whips around and smashes into the bridge trying to sweep you straight off! The whole bridge shakes beneath that last impact, the sturdy steel now appearing all too fragile.

Beatrice and Abe open fire, Abraham having retrieved another of the old rifles from off Beatrice’s back. The bullets whizz right over your head and past the Duke as he hunches down upon the bridge, striking sparks off the tangle of concrete and steel within the containment sphere.
There is another flash of light just as the Iron Duke’s cylindrical head swivels around to face backwards towards the shard, light glinting off two blank glass eyes.

“Stop that! Cease!”

You hastily rise to your feet, drawing your runesword. Here it comes! Either he’ll protect the inner chamber with his own body or he’ll charge straight down the bridge towards Abraham and Beatrice! Either way, he’ll have you to deal with!

And instead of anything you had planned for, the Iron Duke sits back on his haunches with a squeal of protesting steel and then jumps straight up! The bridge shakes again as the Duke’s tail latches around one of the large concrete beams protruding from the ceiling of the outer chamber in order to keep the inner chamber in place.
And then, with a speed and dexterity totally at odds with his lumbering metal bulk, he leaps back down straight towards your two companions! Abe is knocked clean off by the bridge by the impact, the giant sweeping him off as he lands behind you, where the bridge and tunnel meet.

Abe manages to grab hold of the shaking bridge before he falls but the Iron Duke isn’t even paying attention to him, turning to face Beatrice, who had been quick enough to dodge back into the main tunnel outside the chamber. The Duke extends a claw towards her…
“Enough. That will be a-”

Beatrice shoots aforesaid claw point-blank with an explosive shot, the detonation mangling at least one of the Duke’s spiky ‘fingers’.
“Shove it up your arse you big metal invert! Do you still have one?”
She can’t keep the fear from her tone, no matter the content of her words.

>Charge the Duke while his back is turned!

The Duke is being surprisingly patient with us. He keeps telling us to stop. If that's indicative of his personality, he's probably doing this stuff for the good of Dis.

That's a hard choice you've given us Ouro, good grief.

Either distract him with the controls, help Abe with a nasty fall (good thing we blessed him) or go save Bea.

>5/5 immolate, use the saint's blessing

>>2008710
What? No it's not! He can literally hold the sun in his hands. We don't have enough fire to hurt him with a normal Immolate, and he sounds confident he can withstand even our Lamp.

Hit him with the sword, it's been seen to cut through steel.
>Charge the Duke while his back is turned!
>Rune-sword
>>
>>2008721
....Lampaboo anon. The runesword was able to cut steel explicitly because Ignite Weapon was on. It was half cut, half melt.

If we're going to get a chance at cutting through his high temperature shit, we either bring him hotter than he is now, THEN pull out the sword(which we still have enough Wick for an ignite weapon), or cool him down so fast he becomes brittle.
>>
>>2008733
Why not start with Ignite Weapon, then? Immolate by itself won't likely do much damage, but the sword+IW can this turn.
>>
>>2008744
Immolate is the higher cost/commit move, so I'd rather that one goes off first, to make sure it hits.
>>
>>2008678
>Charge the Duke while his back is turned!
>>
How about we pull Abe from his fucking Death so he can try and go turn off the machine instead of dying.
>>
>>2008748
Higher cost doesn't necessarily mean higher damage in this case. It would make sense to lean more on steel than fire in this fight.

Secondly, Immolate is a cone, and Bea, the witch with explosive blood is right there.
>>
Honestly guys, I feel like a direct attack isn't going to be too effective since the majority of his body has been modified. Whatever is done has to go beyond brute force. Leverage against him could work, or something other than just attacking him.

To reiterate my last post, pull Abe up. Tell him to go try and stop the machine (unlikely but a possible distraction to the Duke) and then go and try to bear hug suplex his metal body down into the fire below.
>>

I think he's made out of Lamppost.

>You find the ornate lamp-post a little bit down the main street, embedded in what must have once been the very center of Sacrament. It stands out from the rest of the town as clear as day, a construction of dark spiked metal embedded through the false soil and into the concrete itself. You brush away the dirt to reveal a thin circle of runes in the concrete around the lamp-post’s base.
>>
>>2008820
well shit. So if we smack him with the lampost, he could plain suck the sunshard out of it and into himself?
>>
>>2008820
Yeah I got that same vibe. Fire won't do much against his mechanical body. He's built it so he can work directly with a piece of the sun, it has to be off the same material. I think using an kind of fire attack against him right now would be a waste of time and effort. Relying on pure physical force rather than our extremely limited wick would probably be a better idea if we decide to go into direct combat against him right now instead of taking another action.

>Charge the Duke while his back is turned!
>Ignite the runesword!

What should you do? Both of your companions are in peril and the trapped sun lies ahead of you, alone and unguarded! What should you do? But fortunately you know that, no matter what else, the worst thing you can do right now is hesitate.
Abraham will likely be fine, you can free the shard later once the Duke has been dealt with, Beatrice is in deadly danger right now.

“Foul-mouthed little girl! Cease this at once!”

“I don’t know why you keep talking like we’re going to fucking do what you tell us to!”
Beatrice is shouting as she keeps firing upon the advancing monster, the Iron Duke easing himself into the tunnel to chase her down.

You run down the bridge, passing by Abe with just a nod. He just closes his eyes and nods in Beatrice’s direction.

You don’t know how much fire will do to him but not even metal can withstand all heat! It can be heated and softened, cooled and cracked and...when confronted with a sufficiently hot and sufficiently sharp and sturdy blade, it can be sheared.
You hold your runesword high in one hand and your wick ahead of you, banging them together as you run and focussing the last Wick reserves of the little tool upon the sword.

Wick: 0/10

It bursts into flame just as the sun behind you frees its light once more, the flash painting the hunched metal monster ahead of you in black and white. And the fire answers, stronger and hotter than it has ever been before! Could it be? The proximity to yet another shard is empowering your Flame Rites! The Iron Duke couldn’t have predicted this! By fighting you here, he has sealed his own doom!

His tail lashes up as you close in, the Duke evidently anticipating your attack. Getting struck by that thing would be no laughing matter, a thin bar of flexible metal the width of your arm and swung with a mighty force. But right now? You need not fear it! He’s set it to writhe and thrash behind him to ward you off but all he’s really done is put part of himself in easy reach! His tail will be the first payment you exact for his crimes!

You weave past the first motion and then step first, your flaming sword now held in both hands high above your head. The flame that covers it now is now a furious blue, the proximity of the captive shard feeding into the one upon your back.
You bring it down upon the thinner end of his tail.

The blazing sword strikes it and bounces off, leaving only a slice no deeper than the width of one of your fingers. The metal around the strike isn’t even hot. How could this be?

Meanwhile you can hear Beatrice shriek. You can’t see much past the Duke’s angular body but you can see her go crumpling against the tunnel well, all from a glancing blow that did nothing more than rip up her coat. She picks up her pistol and fires again, the explosive shot driving a small dent into the Duke’s torso.

“Hrrrrnnn.”
The Duke makes a sound like broken gears as he inspects Beatrice and the newly exposed brand beneath her neck. He isn’t even paying attention to you as you slice away at him from behind, each flaming swordstrike doing nothing more than what the runesword would normally do. It’s not even that the metal is resistant to heat! It’s as if the flame isn’t having any sort of effect on him at all!

“Rnnn,” The Duke says. “You are some sort of deviant witch? I had thought you another Flame Artist. My apologies what is about to occur.”
None of you have the time to be puzzled by his words as the top of his head begins to glow a bright cherry-red. The broken ‘crown’ built into the top of it was no crown at all, just a ring of jagged metal torn upward to form a hole going straight down through his long cylindrical head. There is a drawn out hissssss followed by a loud crack! and then the top of his head bursts into flames! No imposter green flame here, the flames spouting out of hole in his head have nothing to do with what his Consortium peddles. They are bright and true and hot, outlining the Duke in firelight. His glass eyes, recessed and dark, burst into blazing light!
“I thought you all Lamplighters of a sort,” the Duke says, his voice now picking up yet another discordant tone, the roar of the fire within. “Else I would have done this much earlier.”

You can do naught but stare as the blazing creature extends a palm down the tunnel towards the fleeing witch. Your conscious mind refuses to acknowledge what the Duke is about to do but the rest of you recognises the gesture immediately. And to think that you had come down here ready to recognise witch-sign!
Acting without thinking, you dodge past the tail and wrap your arms around the bottom of the Duke’s torso, where it thins out into his legs. You grit your teeth and lift with more force than you thought possible, every muscle in your body straining!

You don’t manage to pull the Iron Duke back more than a single foot but that is enough to throw off his aim, his spindly metal arm snapping around and spraying a jet of flame into the concrete walls of the outer chamber instead of straight down the tunnel as he had intended.
And then one of the Duke’s knees reverse direction and he kicks you off of him, sending you rolling down the length of the bridge with just a shallow hit.

You can’t help but wheeze as you get to your feet, the blow having dented your breastplate a little but nothing else. You just stare up at the blazing Duke, at the little sword wounds that had been scored on his back as if heat and flame was truly nothing to him, at the unmistakable Immolate that had just left a long scorch-mark upon the walls above you.
At his ridiculous looking head, now no longer a roaring fire but a steady glow full of drifting sparks.

“At last it understands,” the Duke speaks. “Let me guess. Did you come down here expecting to fight a witch? Some other child of darkness? Or perhaps a mere mortal man lead astray? No. No, no no. Rest assured, servant of a lost and dying god, within this magnificent body of iron my Wick still burns as bright as ever!”

You don’t know what to say. You don’t know what to do.
‘Why? If you were here in Dis, the only way you could have learned of pyromancy would b-”

“Yes.”
The Duke cuts you off, his attention now hopefully off of Beatrice. You’re fine letting him talk if it means Beatrice can escape. A single Immolate of any kind could easily spell her end.
“I was once of the faith. They had not fallen as far as they have now but I assure you, it was always a pitiful crawling thing in this grand city. I once believed the same lies as you.”

“I only see one lie before me and-”

“I don’t care.”

“But why? You’ve only doomed yourself and everyone like you! Why would a pyromancer take part in any of this?”

“There is no inherent virtue in a flame, Lamplighter. It is a force born within us, nothing more. And yes, once I would have asked the same question. But then I grew old. Very old. Tell me something Lamplighter. The Wayward Flame created humanity to be soldiers in their everlasting war against the Old Powers, correct. So why-”
The Duke leaps forward and while you dodge the first claw and the second, you are unable to avoid the tail that comes sweeping around, knocking your feet from out beneath you and sending you toppling into the pool of fire below!
“Why did they make us so frail?”

You hit the green flame unharmed, your sword still clutched tightly in hand. The liquid fire catches you just barely enough to slow you before you drift to the bottom. You don’t have much time to recover however, the Iron Duke leaping from the bridge above and landing in the flame not too far from you. His tail sweeps up a great wave of the stuff as he stalks towards you.

“Why did the Wayward Flame take us, their mightiest weapons and children, and leave us so weak and alone against the dark? Why did they let us be so vulnerable to the TIME that the Wayward Flame itself created? Why can the Powers of the Earth protect their disciples from age but the Flame and the Wheel God leave us to die?”

“Is that all?”
You rise from the flame, dodging their claws and striking yet another shallow groove upon his body. Behind him, you can see Abe pull himself to safety.
“You should have just become a witch! At then at least you would have been honest!”

“And lose my pyromancy? I was proud, Lamplighter. And rightfully so!”
You are forced to retreat as the Iron Duke kicks out at you, claws that could easily take your head clean off splashing through the false flame.

“My skill was why they sought me out, of course. Not long before the sun would fall, they took me from my home and from my Temple. The other six, for all their schemes and dark arts, they could not approach the Sun! They needed a mighty disciple of light! They needed me!”

“And you just agreed?”

“Of course. Do you still not understand? The Wheel God, damn his name, had already betrayed all of us long before either of us were ever born. He lost his right to us when he let us die! When he made us stunted, unable to grasp the wonders of our forefathers. How can you look upon a world where a witch or a troll may live forever and think your maker just? We are expendable soldiers, nothing more. I refute the fate the gods have forced upon us and I chose immortality in its stead! All flames must flicker and burn out eventually but I! I will live forever!”

“And in doing so, you just became their tool. A puppet for the enemies of humanity!”

“Ah. Oh dear. I see it now, Lamplighter. As a fully faithed fool for the Wheel God, you think we must all sell our lives to one god or another. No. I don’t heed any dead god, whether they be of flame or of dirt. This must be an entirely foreign notion to you.”

You’re forced to dive as his tail strikes again, spearing down through the fire to clatter against the bottom of the sphere.

“Well? What’ll it be, Lamplighter?”

“What?”

“I’m not talking for nothing. I will request your surrender now. You have already worked with some sort of witch, after all, this should not be an entirely alien idea. I am much more human than she is, after all. Your fire cannot burn me. Your weapons will break against me. Give me that shard you carry and recant your God and I will let you live.”

Obviously this is unacceptable.

Uh. I have an idea. What happens if a person with little or zero flesh who's trapped inside a dragon suit suddenly gets a blessing of regeneration?

I've changed my mind.
>>2009070 changing to:

>He seems quite proud, once you actually get him talking. Ask him about his repulsive body.
>If it sounds like a possibility, hit him with all of your Wick put into a Benediction of Relief; crush him within the prison he's fashioned for himself.

It could work. We've got little else to try since the Duke himself probably knows Excommunication.

>He might not have any flesh to dissolve or to regenerate so it would fizzle.
Regenerate, he still has a Wick.
Sure that's a possibility. That's why we're asking about his body to verify feasibility before jumping the gun. If Orion thinks it won't work, he won't try it. If he does, though, it would be almost as cool as using his Wick for a Detonate. Splorch.

Should maybe not dump ALL the Wick into BoR, since we're standing in fire. Hopefully Ouro won't steer Orion as if he's lost all of his common sense.

But we really need to know the details of his new body so we can judge if the regeneration tactic will work.
>>

I like it too, but we should probably try to figure out what we're trying to make him feel. Arrogance, shame, then more shame?

The Iron Duke might be in a unique position. For most people, regeneration is a good thing. For someone who might get crushed to death if they grew back their limbs and internal organs, regeneration is not a good thing.

(By the way, apparently Excommunication wouldn't have worked anyway, it doesn't work on people who've developed their Wick.)

>Assorted Write-ins

You do your best to pretend to be considering the Iron Duke’s offer while, over and past the monster’s ball-jointed shoulder, you watch Abe stand warily on the bridge. He’s gesturing at you frantically, apparently about whether he should go see if Beatrice is alright or whether he should advance upon the containment sphere. You do your best to motion him forward towards the inner chamber and the machine within without the Iron Duke catching on.
It’s one thing to use an attack on the shard-machine to catch his attention and to force him backwards. It’d be a much grander coup if he could find a way to disable it entirely.

You wade through the liquid flame, always keeping a wary distance between yourself and the Duke. The reach of that tail has surprised you before.
“It is true that I cannot burn you,” you say, shouting to be heard over the fire. “You do seem fairly unstoppable.”

“A statement of fact. Are you ready to surrender?”

Of course not. But the more time you spend talking, the more you learn and the more time Abraham has. You must admit, you’ve never been one for any sort of theological debate. Or if you had been, they had been an argument in which your best rebuttals had come in the form of flame and staff.
“You speak of the injustice of humanity. What of those outside of Dis? Those who tremble and waver at the encroaching dark? By damning them, you visit upon them the same cold injustice you claim the Wheel God inflicted upon you.”

The Duke stops, leaning forward on all fours with his torso and immobile head craned forward. When next he speaks, his disharmonic voice is the lowest you’ve ever heard it.
“What of them?”

“You heard me!”

“And you heard me. What of them? Their lives are their own. My rebellion of flesh is not some grand revolution of ideas to be shared among all, Lamplighter. It is personal. All that can be truly asked of any person is that they live their lives according to their own precepts, principles they have determined on their own.”

You shake your head, making doubly sure you’re out of his tail’s range. Up above, Abe recoils from the heat emanating from the inner chamber and then holds his face and jumps inside.
“I cannot abide that. Even setting aside your blasphemy, how can you possibly speak of injustice when you trample upon countless masses!”

“You cannot abide that? And I cannot respect you. You are but an empty vessel mouthing the borrowed will of a dead god that has betrayed you. If I were crack you open, Lamplighter, and remove the Wheel God from you, what would be left?”
1/3
>>
>>2009490
“I never once asked for or expected your respect!”
It’s as if Beatrice said earlier. The way the Duke speaks, it’s as if he’s supremely confident that people, all people will not only listen to him and his commands but that they place importance in his opinion at all. Why would he think that you, someone he is locked in a battle to death with, cares about earning his respect or not?
“You speak about being free but are you?”

“Yes.”

“You’re unable to leave this chamber for more than ten minutes! Is this how you planned to spend your immortality? Is this supposed to be how you didn’t sell your life?”

“This chamber has given me untold power in this city. None may grasp at it but me.”

“Power for what? You sell flame and make money to make more flame? To make it easier to sell more? What good is working down here forever if you’re just buying more time to stay here even longer? You could be the richest man in Dis a-”

“I am, in fact, as much as such a thing can be measured.”

“No you aren’t! The Consortium is rich. The other businessmen of this city are rich. But your life would be exactly the same regardless of how much money you make! If you’ve won immortality and riches but all it gets you is an eternity down here tending to the fire, what worth is that? I’ve met beggars in this city who are richer than you.”

The Iron Duke’s response comes in the form of his tail sweeping in from underneath the flame and trying to take you by surprise. But you’ve been keeping watch for it this entire time and you jump to the side! By the time you’ve landed however, the Duke is rushing forward, the burning tide surging forth under the piston-pumps of his legs. You manage to block the first swipe with your runesword, the force of it pushing you back out of reach of his other claws.
You take another step back and then stop. The floor beneath you is starting to curve upwards steeply. He’s driven you up against the wall!

“You appear to have rejected my proposal. So be it. I do not crave the shard you bear like the others, I have all I could possibly need. I will retrieve it from your corpse or not at all.”

You think quickly, piecing together what you’ve heard from the Duke with something you vaguely remember hearing from your time down in the Mazes earlier.
“...I think I spoke to someone who remembered who you used to be once. He would be sad to see you now. Do you remember any of the people in the Sun Temples who you left behind? Any of them at all?”

This seems to strike some kind of nerve.
“They left me first. Each of those who served the Temple with me succumbed to the curse of time until all I knew were infants. When my benefactors came to take me away, I knew more among the dead than I did the living. Can you even imagine what that’s like?”

2/3
>>
>>2009495
“More than you know. But is it not the nature of all things to pass? You are asking a protection from the Flame and the Wheel God that they could not have granted!”

“Wrong. This world is full of those who stand strong against the flow of time. Even the First Men lived for centuries longer than we do now. As a Third Man, my maker did not intend for me to live a long life, did not intend for me to do anything but scrabble in the muck. Taken from us is the power of the First and the understanding of the Second! All we were meant to do was to keep the throne of the world warm for the coming of the Fourth. We didn’t have to be strong or smart or gifted. We were born to die.”

“And just how do you plant to stop that? That metal body?”
If nothing else, the Iron Duke is in possession of a mighty pride.

“It is a masterpiece is it not? It is a technically a golem of sorts but an empty one, donated to me personally by one of my compatriots. A fusion of witchcraft and Second Age technology that will never run down, grow old or die. And it only functions because of what I am, fed eternally through the one fuel source that will never truly run dry, my Flame Internal!”

“It burns your soul?”

“Semantics.”
You barely have the time to see the metal flicker through the flame, throwing yourself to the side as the Duke slams his clawed foot into the concrete behind you. You had been watching for his tail and for his claws, you’d forgotten all about his feet hidden beneath the surface of the fire!
“How can you claim superiority, Lamplighter? What aspect? You do not even burn half as bright as I.”

“Fire is more than mere heat or the ability to burn. It is the capacity for kindness and empathy, something that is always lost when your Wick is snuffed out. And yet that witch is more in tune with it than y-”

Your words are drowned out by the long hisssss and the crack! as his stovepipe-head ignites once more, a great spout of flame spiralling up out of the hole in his head and dancing amidst his ‘crown’. You recognise it for what it is now, a Stoke Rite, an advanced Flame Rite designed to boost to temporarily call up a large amount of Wick, surpassing the usual limits of your implement if needed.

“Hrnnn.”
The Iron Duke’s glass eyes burn orange once more, empty portals to the inferno raging within.
“Would you like to test that hypothesis?”

>Get ahold of his furnace!

You think you know what he’s about to do. He’s a Flame Artist himself, he should know that he can’t burn you no matter how hard he Stokes his firecrafting tool. Which means he’s about to flip around and attack someone else!
Come to think of it, didn’t he just try this before when he leapt at Beatrice and Abe? It has to be something like that again! After all, while you don’t know how to perform the Stoke Rite yourself, you know its major use: Charging an Immolate.

You charge at him, the tide of liquid fire wrapping around your waist and slowing you down as the Duke sits back on his spindly haunches. You were right! He’s about to jump! He’s going to jump back onto the bridge and try to incinerate Beatrice or Abe!

Just before he leaps, you grab hold of his leg and hurl yourself forward, both hands outstretched and reaching for his burning head!

>Roll1d6. The first three shall be used for Orion’s roll. The stages are landing on his shoulders, avoiding his counter-attack and grabbing hold of his furnace.

Your gauntlets slap against his shoulders and you grab hold, slamming painfully into his chest in the process. He swipes at you but in a strangely indirect fashion, the claw going wide and slow to avoid striking his torso. You twist to the side and avoid it and just as you do, the Duke leaps.

It’s all you can do to hold on as the world spins, the Iron Duke clearing the pool of flame and landing atop the bridge with an impact that sets the whole thing to shaking. The Duke himself sways to keep his footing, nearly throwing you off!
But while you lose your grip with your right hand, you stay hanging to his shoulder with your left! And before he can stop you, your right hand is reaching straight for his burning head!

You come within inches, your fingertips just barely brushing against it before your momentum stops. You can’t reach!

The Duke’s tail comes whipping up from over his shoulder, bashing against it hard enough to leave a dent and shaking you free. You land face-down on the bridge and do your best to roll, getting your leg caught in a gap in the railing as you do so.
You pull yourself free but not before the Duke approaches you, the bridge shuddering beneath every clanking step.

At least he hasn’t fired at Beatrice….wherever she is. You didn’t see her in the tunnel.

His foot stomps down upon you and you only manage to pull yourself out of the way just in time.
“I must ask again, Lamplighter. How can you judge me or held yourself above? In what aspect of your existence do you exceed me? It cannot be flame, you are but a cinder.

What happened to your runesword? Where did you drop it? You rise to your feet just in time to catch a blow to the chest, claws skittering against your armour and knocking you across the bridge towards the mouth of the tunnel. Beatrice was supposed to be there. Where is she?

“It cannot be physicality,” the Duke’s ear-mauling voice continues. “You still reside in the body the Wayward Flame gave you. Weak and fragile and mortal. I am stronger.”

You rise again and rush forward, trying to find another way to get ahold of that furnace. If you can just but grab it!
His tail whips in front of you in a frenzy of blows and you’re forced to back away from him, catching the tip of the tail upon your leg in the last one and wincing in pain. It feels like getting hit by a very fast crowbar.

“Is it spirit? I don’t think so. You are a slave to faith, your will is but a borrowed reflection of a flame someone else gave you. I have shaken loose from all such ties and forged my will myself, honing it not through devotion to a dead god but through rational self-interest!”

He’s advanced far enough that you now have your back to the tunnel. And if you step back into that, you will have nowhere left to run. Behind burning form of the Duke, across the span of the bridge, you can see Abe within the containment sphere. He’s struggling with the levers that lie within, the infernal machine whirring and flashing incomprehensibly.

“I’m sure you thought yourself full of mighty purpose. But you are nothing but a mere shadow of the man you came here to destroy.”
The Duke raises both his claws above his makeshift crown of flame. He clearly intends to crush both you and the bridge beneath you, ending your battle in one final swipe.

It might also be worth instilling doubt in him that this was all his idea. Tell him that witches can curse people, and ask him how likely it was that a priest with so strong a will decided to forsake his life's work right after he'd been chosen to kill the sun and dragged out of his house.

You stare up at the metal giant, at the firelight gleaming off his dented claws as the Duke solemnly prepares his intended execution. You have aches and pains running all up and down your body, spikes of agony threading through every place where he has landed even a glancing blow and in return you’ve barely done more than scratch him.
“I am still a man,” you breathe. “Nothing more and nothing less. But I still have my own will while you are nothing but a golem slaved to th-”

The claws come crashing down, smashing through the bridge entirely with a scream of tearing metal. You were waiting for this and you’ve already begun to run, doing your best to get out from underneath the swipe and sprint towards the Duke while his guard is down! He won’t be able to easily retract his arms in time so there’ll be nothing between you and that burning stovepipe he calls a head!

The bridge buckles beneath you, threatening to make you lose your footing as you run and ahead of you, dividing up the distance between you and your foe, the Iron Duke’s tail thrashes like a mad thing! You’ve got no choice but to run past it.

You clear the collapsing section of the bridge with a burst of speed you didn’t know you had, fragments of torn steel and broken railing bouncing past you as you charge forth! The only thing that lies between you and the Iron Duke now is his tail, whipping about before him in a directionless frenzy.

You don’t have time to slow down or to be wary navigating the errant steel whirlwind in front of you, the best you can do is to dart to the side and continue on! You’ve dodged it plenty of times before after all, you’ve had time to study it. It holds not more surprises for you!

You’re standing right before the Duke when his tail catches you in the side, smashing into you hard enough that you feel several of your ribs break free! Pain tints your vision for just a moment and the impact sends you slamming up against the railing of the bridge hard enough to bend it. You grab hold of it reflexively as you strike it and in doing so, somehow remain on your feet.

And yet through the pain, a single driving imperative remains.

You rest upon the railing for but a moment before stepping forth once more. The Duke’s head swivels to face you but you’re already past his tail! You step past the rising leg as if in a dream and then, once more, leap for his head!

And this time you don’t miss! You wrap both hands around the base of his head, dangling wildly across his chest as you pull yourself up atop his shoulders. You can now see straight down into the vortex of flame and your suspicions are confirmed.
The Iron Duke’s ‘head’ is hollow, just an in-built furnace that uses as an implement for his pyromancy. You can just make out the other side of his glass eyes within the cylinder’s interior. They are glass and nothing more, more windows than any sort of actual eye. There’s nothing here but fire!

The Duke’s shoulders rotate, both hands wheeling up to grab you!

You don't know how much Wick he still has left in his furnace but it would need to be pretty large to reach the pool below.

Why would it matter if it did ignite the green fire? Can't be hotter than the shard that Abe oz working on, and Bea is hidden in the tunnel somewhere probably doing something mysterious.

Detonate is probably better, even if I'm voting for Relief.
>>

Additional Wick can be burned before the spell is cast to increase the blessing’s power.

>>

>>
>Use a Detonate upon his head.

For a moment there you nearly let loose a Benediction of some kind, something that might disrupt the witchcraft that helps his body function or give life to whatever withered flesh he has left, if any. But that won’t work, will it? This isn’t even the Iron Duke’s real head! You don’t even know if he has a real one or even if he needs one anymore but this is just a furnace built into his metal shell! It’d be like trying to lay a Benediction upon a lantern or a lamp-wick, it’s just his casting implement!

And with that in mind, you call upon the flame within it to empower a Flame Rite you’d never imagined yourself using directly on another living being. That desperate ignition meant to sacrifice a pyromancy tool as a last resort, Detonate!

The Duke’s cylindrical head glows orange and then red as you agitate the Wick within, fire desperately bursting from his broken iron crown as he attempts to vent the excess but considering that he had just Stoked it himself? There’s no stopping this.

You leap from the Iron Duke’s shoulders and land heavily upon the bridge, your broken ribs wrenching forth an involuntary bellow as you roll. Behind you, a long whistling sound rises to a shriek and the Duke’s head explodes. The heat of the explosion is of no danger, liquid flame spraying past you and pooling upon the bridge. A piece of jagged metal shrapnel bounces off the bridge beside you and you flinch back despite your runeplate.

“Lamplighter…”
The Duke’s voice is quiet, lacking the crackling roar that it had posessed ever since he first ignited. You turn and see him kneeling before you, a red-hot lump of twisted metal jutting out from his torso where his ‘head’ used to be. It’s going cold even as you watch. Unless he gets his hands upon another implement, he’ll call no more fire. You try to get up…
“Die.”

His right hand comes down and lacking the ability to move out of the way, you opt for the only choice you have. You raise both arms and catch the blow, gripping his palm with both hands to prevent his claws from closing the last few inches. For a brief moment, the two of you are still.

And then the Duke starts to push and the weight of the caught hand seems to double, intent on simply crushing you into the steel of the bridge!

Fucking over Abe is probably a really bad idea unless we don't mind him getting torn to pieces. Granted, it's not like he's much use as a body now that we have a little cult following, butt it would be a dick move to use him as a distraction.

I don't really see how pleading for Beatrice to shoot him would supersede any physical rolls. After all, presumably, to keep him as an easy target we need to keep holding up under his attempt to turn us into a pancake. Letting him go and fleeing just sort of puts us back to where we were, with him remaining plenty evasive.

Fact of the matter is there's no easy way out of this, and we're going to have to roll somewhere. If we're going to be physical, I'd propose doing it in a way like I suggested where it isn't just brute force against brute force.
>>
>>2013535
I'd also like to emphasize, if we're going to keep fighting this mother fucker, he's at even more of an advantage if we're not right up in his shit. Keeping close to him is our best bet for beating him; if we break contact, I'd suggest just running off with the shard instead of trying to keep fighting, since he has all sorts of options to hit us with on our approach due to his superior reach and shit; he's still stronger than us and not really worse for wear physically, but surrendering the closure in the gap given by us being at point blank shouldn't come without thought if we're trying to take him down.

I don't see why we can't get Bea to shoot WHILE contesting him. It would just be us holding him there for her instead of trying to not get crushed.

Also>>2013607
> For someone desperate to live, why are you still willing to die for the shard?

>”Beatrice! For the love of God, shoot now!” You refuse to believe she has abandoned you.

You don’t know where the witch has gone but you realise something as you do your best to keep the Duke from crushing you any further. You don’t think she’s abandoned you or fled, despite her absence in this battle. You hadn’t even considered it up until now. You don’t know why she’s been hanging back but if ever you need her backup, it would be now.

“Beatrice! For the love of God, shoot now!”

Right here, right now, the minor blasphemy doesn’t seem such a sin. Just shouting this gives the Duke pause, alleviating the weight as the monster prepares himself for an attack from behind. There is silence for several seconds, broken only by the flashes of the sun-machine and the slow-burning crackle of the green flame below.
“It seems your allies have abandoned you.”

Sparks fly as something strikes the ruined bridge behind the Iron Duke and then another bang heralds an explosive bullet hitting the ground between the beast’s legs. The third shot strikes home however, detonating against the back of the Duke’s torso with a muffled boom. The Duke flinches back, no longer able to protect himself from the heat of the explosive shots. The idea is slow-dawning on your stunned mind but effective once it has done so. Of course! Without his implement, he has no Wick and fire is no longer his friend!
You can just spot the faint, dark shape of Beatrice standing in the mouth of the tunnel. She’s swaying, her gun held out in front of her in a shaking grip. You’ve never seen her aim tremble before.

The Duke swivels, two more shots blowing sparking dents into his heavy chest. And as he does so, the weight upon you is lifted. You push the metal paw off of you and begin to rise but as you do so, the Duke rears back on his haunches once more and leaps straight across the gap in the bridge, aiming straight for her!

>Spark: 3/8

You don't empty out your reserves, not just yet. You still have so much you may need to do and besides, you're not even sure if using it all up at once would prove a decisive end to this battle. He is some sort of golem, after all.

The Iron Duke screams loud enough to drown out Beatrice's gunfire as your Immolate blasts into him. His feet scrabble helplessly upon Beatrice's end of the broken bridge as your flame paints the back of his torso a glowing cherry-red. If there is anything of flesh still left inside there somewhere he'll surely feel the molten brand your Flame Rite has left behind.

The Duke slips at the edge of the bridge, clawing at his back and falls! His arms snap around to catch himself at the last moment, the upper half of the Iron Duke still atop the other side of the broken bridge while his spindly metal legs and tail dangle helplessly below.

Beatrice is practically standing right before him and he can do nothing save writhe in pain from the red-hot metal that is his own body. And then...his left claw manages to dip into one of the small pools of liquid true flame left scattered across both sides of the bridge after you destroyed his furnace.
It's a tiny flame, no doubt worth barely more than just a few points of Wick but as long as he is contact with it as an implement, the burns you have left upon him will no longer hurt him.

"Beatrice! Shoot his left hand away!"

The gunpowder witch doesn't seem to hear you, still swaying aimlessly in the mouth of the tunnel, her cap pulled firmly down over her face. You can barely make her out with the Duke in the way but you're not sure if she's even holding her pistol anymore right now. What's wrong with her?

His composure momentarily recovered, the Duke swings his right hand out slowly, aiming to knock Beatrice out into the burning pool below with a single lazy sweep.

Beatrice reacts uncommonly fast, her hands coming up and catching his claw between them as you had before. Thick dark blood oozes in ragged spurts from the rents in her gloves.

"Oh," Beatrice says, her voice sounding like the crunch of gravel. "This was a bad idea."

>A special contest of strength roll has been declared. First, roll 1d6 for the Iron Duke. The first 3 of these shall be totalled together as if it was a Collective Effort roll and then, 3d6 will also be rolled for Beatrice and compared.

The Iron Duke, as damaged as he is, still possesses a seemingly unstoppable physical force. He gets a +3 modifier to these rolls.

Even as injured as the Duke is, his slow sweep is still enough to strike blood from Beatrice's hands from mere impact alone. But if they bruise her, it is unknown for now that you can get a better look...Beatrice's face, neck, hands and all other visible skin is just a single mottled bruise.

The blood that drips onto the bridge is so thick that it is practically jellied, almost more of a solid than a liquid. It doesn't spill forth from her mouth or eyes but instead seems to be oozing forward in thick beads from her very skin itself, as if it had become porous or paper-thin.

And as she doesn't budge, you realise just what she's been doing this whole time.

>Roll 1d6. The first 3 shall be totalled for Beatrice's test of strength.

Beatrice screams out something slurred and unintelligible in her broken voice as she not only catches the Duke’s strike but latches onto it and pulls him forward just a little, enough to drag his other hand from the flame. His back is still red hot from the burns you inflicted upon him and the moment she drags him from his source of Wick, he begins to scream once more.

Beatrice’s own cry of pain is almost drowned out as she pulls his right hand free entirely, popping it loose from the end of his slender arm. And as another flash from the containment chamber sears across your vision, she shambles forward, more a slowly collapsing fall than a run and slams her fist into the Duke’s chest.

You can see her wrist snap the instant it happens, leaving a dent the size of her fist and sending the metallic Sinner toppling over the edge of the broken bridge and into the lake of green flame down below. The green fire swallows him, muffling the sound of his body crumpling against the concrete floor beneath the pool. Even concentrated that pallid fire probably isn’t enough to burn him further but still, the wound your Immolate left should cripple him enough for now. It’ll certainly buy you time.

At the same time you hear an abrupt crash from the containment chamber and a brief yelp from Abraham. White light pours forth from the doorway into the inner sphere. Even you can scarcely stand to gaze upon it and you can feel a warmth spilling forth from the burden upon your back, even dormant and cloaked as it is.
The chamber fills with the bright light and casts equally dark shadows. Behind you, on the other side of the bridge, Beatrice falls to her hands and knees and starts to wretch helplessly. It sounds like she’s trying to vomit something up, almost certainly blood but...you recall the blood that you just saw. It’s too solid for her to expel, a rising tide clogging up her throat.

Seconding this, the possibility that the shard is stolen is low, since the Iron Duke was one of the few that could handle it, and if the shard is still in the mechanism, it shouldn't burn out.

Certainly wouldn't be ideal, but it might not be a game over. How the shards work and what we need to do to restore the sun (which I imagine is our ultimate goal) is still very unclear.

>>
>>2014113
Yeah. I just remembered back to when Orion saved the shard he has, and it flickering away before he got it in the post.
>>
Honestly it's probably best to grab that thing and everybody else and just book it. We don't -really- need to kill the Iron Duke if we can just take his shard, theoretically.

Could risk him showing up later to kick our ass but we might be in a better position to fight him then instead of risking reinforcement arriving.
>>
>>2014138
Getting out of here is going to be extremely difficult regardless.
>>
>>2014138
Agree we shouldn't bother trying to finish him off. The other six might even do that for us, what use is he now that he's lost his shard?
>>
>>2014157
Witches aren't known for the generosity for failure, or weakness.

But almost certainly they will put him in a new body to hunt us.

We can just double tap him on the way out. Ultimately the most important thing is getting the shard out. Even if it means giving it to Abe wrapped up and fighting to the death here.

> Abe quest! Oh god you weren't ready for this.
>>
>You must tend to your comrade.
>Get the shard afterwards.

You will not shy away from your greatest duty, not now, not after all this time. After all if she were to die here, would it not be just in a way? Would it not be the long deferred punishment for her crimes? The heart of a god must not be denied for the blood of a witch!
And yet you cannot overlook the battles the two of you have fought together.

You spare another look at the holy light and then turn your head, your chest sending out period pulses of pain as you jump the gap and do your best to shield Beatrice from the radiance of the relic you have come to collect. If her blank eyes even see you she gives no sign, the witch collapsed on the ground as she chokes to death on her own blood. Her whole body spasms and leaves a faint coat of blood wherever it touches like a grisly dew.

You lift her with one hand and let her dangle, leaning limply over your arm. Recalling a distant memory of how you treat this, you slam the heel of your gauntlet into her back several times before she coughs up a solid clot of blood right onto your boots. She shrieks as she does so and you lower her to the ground on her side. Gobbets of blood in a more liquid form follow the clot and fill the air with the stench of sulfur.
You give her a nod as you turn back towards the containment sphere. The road might be unwise and painful but you can rest assured that she is still trying her best to shamble back into the light.

You cross the bridge once more, holding your ribs into place as best you can. You’ll need to keep them compressed and endure the pain and they should be fine with a few day’s rest, may the Wheel God be willing.
You shade your eyes with an impromptu salute as you step into the inner chamber. Almost all of the space within is taken up by some kind of machine, a series of concentric concrete tubes that have all split apart upon their joints to reveal a small orb of pure radiance resting serenely amidst a metal ring. Much of the apparatus around these tubes seems to have been damaged, battered or pulled apart.

Production has finally been halted.

And before the unholy machine, lying by the steaming hot control panel, is Abraham. He grins as he sees you.
“I’m fine,” he says. “It singed my hands is all, when it finally stopped spinning. I didn’t actually touch it.”
He’s drenched in sweat and his voice is a dry rattle, desiccated after having spent so long in the centre of this oppressive heat.

“Rise. Are you well?”

“Don’t worry about me, man! Go grab it!”

“I ask not for your sake.”
You pull him to his feet.
“You have done me a great service today. Now, if you can still walk, I must ask of you another. Leave the shard to me and go tend to Beatrice. Please.”

He stares out across the span of the bridge beyond, his eyes scrunched up into slits even as he looks away from the shard.
“Oh no. What did she do now?”

1/3
>>
>>2014377
“More of her usual foolishness. Now leave lest you melt.”

Abe departs, leaving you alone with the broken machine. You examine it for a moment and recognise no witchcraft or anything else of the earth here. You had come ready to face the powers of the dark and yet all that stands before you is the folly of man.
Now, what shall you do with this wayward shard? You can only think of one suitable treatment. You pull the covered lamp-post free and step forward.

Then all that follows is a hideous wrench of steel and an infernal clatter from behind you, before you have even properly approached it! You spin around to see the Iron Duke scrabble across the bridge just outside, smashing the railing aside as he lands in disarray and then pulls himself forward with his one remaining hand!
You reach desperately for the captive shard but now the Duke is here, lurching through the doorway and grasping for it just as you do!

“No! No! That is mine! Fairly fought and won!”

You grab hold of the shard and pull it free, your normally flameproof gauntlet glowing a faint orange already as the heat nearly makes your knees buckle. But these hands are already burnt. What lead to this? Was the time you spent on the witch really your downfall? Did you give the Duke just enough time to recover?

You swing the shard down but the Iron Duke intercepts you, the black steel claws of his remaining hand catching your hand and grasping for the shard! For a moment the two of you are locked there, the strength of wounded flesh and bone locked against that of failing mechanisms, the hands of both you and him clasped around the deadly shard together in some grotesque parody of affection. It burns both of you without favor but...but the Duke’s black metal hand endures it easier.

“You made a mistake,” the Duke hisses, his voice now seemingly tinny and quiet compared to the pain that surrounds you both. “In coming to me first, you made a mistake. The other six have to cower and hide from their own treasures, have to scheme endless petty plans just to make use of the power they took. But I am of the flame! If I wish to use it, all I have to do...is reach for it!”

You can feel the unbidden Wick of the shard you’re holding, even as it burns you. Even after all these years of being bled and perverted to his own uses, it is still a well of pure and bright power. And you can also feel it twisting, feeding into the Iron Duke in the exact same way you have pulled Wick from the lamp-post in times past.

What comes next could only be called an Immolate by the terminally pedantic, a searing beam of almost invisible heat that springs forth as the Duke pushes on the shard in your hand, bursting out just above you and striking the concrete behind you with a physical impact. You take a knee, holding the shard up from below to prevent the beam from striking you.

2/3
>>
>>2014385
The Duke roars wordlessly and presses the shard downward, angling the holy scourge closer and closer towards you. You can hear the concrete crack and wherever the rapacious focused heat touches a steel joint of the machine behind you it is instantly splattered into a spray of molten metal. You slide away from it as best you can but you can barely move, still locked in a grip with the misshapen parody of a central lamp-post that is the Iron Duke.

“This ends now!”

Yes, it does.

Grab the claw that was mangled by Bea earlier and twist it off, assuming it's beeing heated enough by the shard we could remove it and puncture his torso with it
>>
>>2014429
My reasoning is that he was really wary not to hit his own armor with his claws earlier, they must be able to puncture it.
>>

>Since he’s already pushing it down, it should be easy to pull the shard down and back, forcing it deep into the Duke’s body. Let him have as much of it as he can bear and then some.

I wonder if his body can hold it.
>>
>>2014429
I think this is almost the right track, but if even +6 beatrice decided not to remove it, I'm not sure we have enough raw strength. We'd have to do it at the same time as him placing the shard inside himself, and throw the cloak on top for good measure.

>Since he’s already pushing it down, it should be easy to pull the shard down and back, forcing it deep into the Duke’s body. Let him have as much of it as he can bear and then some.

Can the Iron Duke truly withstand the full power of the shard? It is true that he seems to be made from some sort of salvaged and blasphemed-upon lamp post, something that can contain the power indefinitely. But the lamp upon your back is still in one piece, in a manner of speaking. Above the break it hasn’t been meddled with or split apart. It doesn’t have vulnerable joints or the need for them.
And didn’t the Duke try to bait you into using your lamp post earlier? What if it had not been bait but a bluff? An attempt to make you put away the only weapon you bore that could easily hurt him. And it had worked.

The Duke pushes the shard further down, the continuous blast chewing a path through the machine as it drags itself inexorably towards you. Errant drops of molten metal bounce off the back of your helmet as you prepare yourself, marshalling your strength for what you know must lie ahead.

You close your eyes for but a moment, the light still streaming through your eyelids as if they weren’t there. And as you think a silent prayer towards the god the two of you are wrestling over, you relax your grip.

Without you holding it up, the shard swings down rapidly from the force of the Duke’s momentum and before the scourge can strike you, you slam both hands into the Duke’s remaining one and drive it forward towards his own body!
His right arm, still nothing but a handless fractured stump, beats furiously against your shoulder painfully and, ultimately, ineffectually.

You drive the Iron Duke’s own fist into the bottom of his torso, into the part where his legs join his body, where he is weakest by necessity. The joints might have been of Second Age make but in your wake they are nothing, the shard pushing straight through them as if you had swiped air!

Liquid steel sprays past you as you shear his legs right off, the Duke’s torso falling towards you helplessly. You just raise your shoulder and barge past the falling metal, letting him let go of the shard as his momentum carries him past you and into the wreckage beyond.
The Iron Duke can only wail in impotent frustration as his thrashing one-armed torso is caught suspended upside down within the gears of his own broken excruciation mechanism. Rods meant to torture God slam home and pin him into place as if he had been impaled.

You haven’t finished the moving, letting the upward swing carry you forward towards the fallen lamp-post. You give it a kick and let it roll free of its bindings, catching you between twin radiances. The pain is intense but in such a way that it floods out and overrides all other agonies that were bedevilling you, washing you pure in holy pain.

1/2
>>
>>2014670
You slam the Duke’s shard into the lamp-post and let them mingle. You don’t avert your gaze this time for you are not looking at the broken lamp-post. You are looking at something now thirty years distant, of old oaths broken and a new one found.

And now you have finally taken the first real step in fulfilling it. You raise the lamp-post and shoulder it across your back once more.

>>
>>2014706
Yes, the very start of the quest involved carrying a lantern and using detonate. Candles and such probably don't have enough pow to be worth detonating.

Unfortunately, we are EXTREMELY shorthanded in production facilities. Unless we can somehow occupy the Viridian Consortium long term or one of our brethren arrive, we're gonna have a heck of a time just getting a proper replacement for the staff.

As the other six enemies seem to receive their power from the dark, I think it would be more prudent to invest into something that isn't dependent on the presence of light. So that excludes Ignite weapon and Self-ignition. Besides, we already have a good offensive option in Immolate.

So my vote is Immolate or Cauterize wound.
>>

While true, upgrading either Ignite Weapon or Self-Ignition could make them more resistant to 'the power of the Dark'. Also, we could just unwrap our Lamp. Even if we don't actively use it, it should passively dispel Darkness.

Why are people voting for Cauterize Wound? Relief is superior.

Okay so hear me out.

After seeing a guy like the Iron Duke, a legit pyromancer and obviously very skilled flame artist who chose to go against so much of humanity that he basically was the hand that killed god, yet did not renounce his humanity technically, what do you think Orion is going to think about Beatrice. Beatrice may be a witch, but he has been softening up on her recently, especially because of all the pain she puts herself through to bring out even one iota of humanity. The very real torture she inflicts upon herself both as penance and so that she can have the power to fight to bring back the sun.

Now she lays beaten, broken, and quite possibly dying, Orion has no way of knowing whether she will survive or not and he just got ahold of a second shard of god. With that kind of power, and this level of emotional catalyst/pragmatism (lets be honest Bea is a better combatant than Abe or any of the Sun Temple) would it be possible to upgrade our Cleansing Benediction to a point were if a Witch was willing we could turn them back and reignite their Flame Internal.

Or maybe use the power of the Sun Fragment to create a new benediction like Benediction of Redemption? I know it is OP as hell sounding, but it would basically only work here and without it Bea might very seriously die because none of our healing can work on her, it would all just kill her faster.

Even though she is a witch she has shown more humanity and courage and more willingness to sacrifice herself for others or to regain her humanity than a fellow Flame Artist and member of the clergy that we just fought. I know Orion is a stern-hearted old goat, but I think after all Bea has done she has earned this second chance and I don't see us having a much better opportunity. She is basically toast, I think the biggest buff she has ever run at was like a +2-4 and the +4 almost killed her to the point we needed too get her healing at the Workshop. After how much she has pushed herself up until now plus the current crash that is coming, I dont think she will make it anons.

>Why are people voting for Cauterize Wound? Relief is superior.
I voted for it because it also works as on-touch Immolation.
>>
>>2015208
Jesus dude. I'm the Dis fag and I think that's going too far. Bea chose her route, and she could give up the power of gunpowder at any time and be a normal person like Abe more or less at any time.

Fuck enabling her.
>>
>>2015208
Let's just feed her Green Flame and see what happens
>>
>>2015224
She's already tried that. I mean, we're fairly sure it won't make her health any worse right now, so sure, but it's not likely to do anything.

>>2015208
I don't think that's the kind of character growth you can do with an upgrade point.
>>
>>2015216
It is cheaper than Immolate, yeah.
Relief dissolves Dark flesh, is that good enough?

>>2015208
I'm all for relighting he doused Wick, but I don't think Orion is capable of it. Better leave it to the good Doctor Spinae. I'm sure he'd love a test subject witch who wants her Wick back.
>>
>>2015221
Wait, you realise she was a flame-artist before she chose to turn right?

The whole reason she eats gunpowder is to try to gain a grasp back on those powers. What part of her finally having gotten some redemption is that bad? Yeah, I realize it is unprecedented and that the brand works by sealing Bea's ability to transmute earth. But really, finding a way to return a witch to just a human is going too far?

It's not that we would be enabling her, it appears to be a matter of life and death and if we reverse the witch transformation gunpowder will be useless to her except in the traditional method.

It will be a whole new wave of shit if we find a way to willingly reverse witchification, Bea isn't going to turn into Waifu material or anything dumb like that. I'm all for burning Dis to the ground, but Bea has been a reliable ally and it must tug on Orions heart even just a little to see her dying while she just helped him kill the man whom by his own admission was the hand that struck down god.

I am just saying, he may make an emotional decision that he normally wouldn't. 90% of the time Orion would totally go "Lol witch bitch made her decision, no mercy for the heathen, DEUS VULT!" but he has been softening up on her quite a bit after they got into Dis, you might not notice it but even his asshole moments towards her are considerably more considerate.
>>
>>2015233
What I am trying to say here isn't just
>Ohnos we need to save witch-waifu!
It's more that I see us looking at this like any other quest where upgrades come every thread and have no significant character or story building purpose besides +1 to roll x.

The last upgrade we got was the Wax Saint's spark. Each of these is pretty significant, for some reason I felt like we may be crunching numbers too much instead of figuring out what Orion's character development and mental state over the past few threads might guide him to pour this new power into.

Forgive me if I am overthinking it, but that's what happens when it is 3:30 am and I just finished catching up.
>>
>>2015241
Beas whole thing is power. That's why she became a witch when she wasn't allowed to have power as a flame artist. That's why she eats gunpowder. Because she can't handle being powerless. If she can't get enough power from her wick then she'll do what's "necessary" and justify the means. I'm still not sure ingesting flame isn't sacrilege of a sort.
>>
>>2015241
Orion had a set personality from the beginning which was quite stern, but most choices and the way he treats the people around him are a product of anonchoice. Even as a character, he is a mouthpiece for the majority vote.

What i'm saying is that
>90% of the time Orion would totally go "Lol witch bitch made her decision, no mercy for the heathen, DEUS VULT!"
Is a reflection of the people you're trying to convince, rather than just of Orion himself. It's a self-reinforcing cycle of feedback.

That disparagement aside however, Orion has shown himself to be distinctly lacking in the realm of benedictions and flame arts. What you're speaking of may be, as >>2015231 mentioned, outright impossible for him. Even with fragments of a god backing it, I'm unconvinced "good intentions" is enough to brute force an augmentation to a benediction so severe it could somehow reverse witchification, even with conditions behind it.
>>
>>2015241
Like. I don't see the story as mechanical growth so much as "what are we willing to sacrifice for our goals? "

I was serious when I said it might have to come down to Abe Quest where Orion sacrifices himself for the cause. Or Bea kills herself for the power of Flame to do what's "necessary ". Or Abe dies valiantly as "the most expendable" martyr to exonerate his survivor guilt.
>>
>>2015250
That's certainly a crucial part of her character, but she still could have had power as a witch. Yet she chose to surrender it.
>>
>>2015254
I don't think Orion would be Deus Vult to Bea. But he's been consistently characterized as considering her severance from the Flame as rightful punishment for becoming a witch and her choice to ingest gunpowder and suffer as just that - her choice to seek power at the cost of herself.

Redemption would be her accepting her punishment not trying to work around it. In my opinion at least.
>>
>>2015256
She still chooses to sacrifice for power instead of accepting her limitations. She just justifies it as hurting herself instead of others like there being an exchange justifies it. Like her wick can be bought and paid for instead of being a gift.

Thinking that way is the same flaw that lead the Artificer to think he was owed for mankinds role something more than they had already received from the wayward flame.
>>
>>2015262
You know, I'm not sure the Iron Duke is the Artificer. He didn't make the Golem, he might not have made the receptacles the sun shards are being kept in.

He might just be a guy who planted a bomb on the sun.
>>
It's now time to interrogate the Duke. I want to know how he killed the sun, who kidnapped him, who built the golem he used to withstand the sun, who made the receptacles that hold the shards.

We can use pleasure and pain to question him, blissing and spinning him.

Then we should either start running or meditate some of our Wick back before trying to escape.

I hope our description doesn't get out, we want Dr. Spinae to look Bea over.
>>
>>2015183

Improvements to them will likely make them less light dependent as these were intended to be defense against the dark at least in self immolates case. Orion is just not great with flame rites or benediction.

>Ignite Weapon

-Ignite Weapon-
Cost: 1 Wick
Orion can set any weapon he wields alight with holy fire that does not burn the weapon itself and allows to deal flaming damage to any foe it strikes in melee. The duration of this enchantment depends on the local power of the Dark and can be renewed periodically at a cost of 1 Wick each time. This Flame Rite can be used to set other objects aflame as well, anything Orion touches, but such an object is not immune to the summoned flame and must be capable of being burned in the first place.

>With this upgrade, additional Wick can be spent during the ignition to store another Flame Rite or Benediction within the object being ignited. This additional effect will linger for as long as the fire lasts until you call upon it to be activated. The extra cost is the cost of the Rite or Benediction in question.

>In addition, Ignite Weapon is assigned a Power Number. Select a number from 1 to 6. Whenever you roll the dice for an action involving the object that you have ignited or the use of any power stored within sai object with the use of the new upgrade, every legal d6 that lands on the Power Number refreshes your Wick by 1 point.

The Duke literally knows the faces of all his co-conspirators, that's really not common knowledge. Especially not for impoverished gang members.

We need to hold on a moment or five anyway, make sure Beatrice is all right, replenish our Wick from the lamp
>The Lamp can also be used passively to empower wicks and other Flame Rite implements. This does not burn Orion or even require the Lamp to be unwrapped but it does not recharge the wick either, merely grants it the ability to always produce powerful true flame.
and we really might as well interrogate the very much alive, nigh-immortal Duke
>The Iron Duke can only wail in impotent frustration as his thrashing one-armed torso is caught suspended upside down within the gears of his own broken excruciation mechanism. Rods meant to torture God slam home and pin him into place AS IF he had been impaled.

okay gsranted that isnt common knowledge but we have to balance it with two others things

B)he litreally has no reason to give us any information if he is even alive in the first place and even moreso we have no method of actually extracting said knowledge from him anyway

You quickly cover the broken lamp-post once more, wrapping it within the thick canvas as best as you can. More than just the shard within has been replenished today. You can feel it, a blessing from the remnants of the Wheel God is upon you.
The pain hasn’t faded and your new grip upon the holy magics won’t change but for now you find it hard to care. Fire walks with you today.

“Hrrrnnnn.”

You turn to face the burning remnants of the Duke, his dented and headless torso lying upside down and tangled up within his own broken machine. A clawed hand, his final operating limb, taps limply against the ground. Deprived of his legs, that’s all he can do.

“I know this feeling.”
The Iron Duke continues to talk despite his missing ‘head’. Not that that furnace ever had anything to do with his voice, not really. For the first time his voice is no louder than yours, a breathy rasp of broken metal shaped into words.
“My steel betrays me, just as my flesh did in years past. No matter how hard I work or how much I try, it seems I must return to this same old weakness. This is the inescapable birthright of Man. Lamplighter, if you have truly flown close to the face of our maker and may have...have seen something that I have not, then tell me! Are humans doomed to always be weak and frightened creatures?”

We just had a long fight scene, sticking around for several questions isn't going to affect our timing all that much. If they do come to get us, that's fine. We have infinite Wick if we wade into the river of fire. If we need to stabilize Bea, running out right now now now isn't actually going to help her.

“Humanity never was. Only you.”
You stare down on the crippled man who would rather kill God than succumb to the same fate as everyone else.
“In time all things pass away, whether they be of Earth or Flame. Flesh ages, steel rusts and even stone is ground down. You thought you were fighting that but you cannot stave off death with fear. Instead all you did was waste your life and bring suffering unto countless others.”

“Spare me the empty sanctimony.”

“It was this ‘empty sanctimony’ that laid you low. I will not fault your motivations however, merely the actions took in your name. Without fear there can be no bravery. Without weakness there can be no compassion. Perhaps this is the doom of Man and there is nothing we can do to change it but none of that changes what is right.

“I will not listen to the words of a dead god. I serve none but myself!”

“They are my words! And you are wrong. In trying to escape death, all you have done is live your life in servitude of it. You have served it for the past thirty years.”

“Hrnn. And now you come to deliver judgement? The vengeance of the Sun, three decades postponed? You may think that now would be best to strike me down for the last time but...but you would be wrong. I do not intend to die today or ever!”

“What?”
Does he still have some trick up his sleeve? Is this fight not yet over?

“I will tell you all, Lamplighter. The workings of the Consortium, the deals made with the Senate, the names and faces of all six who took that last grand journey with me into the heart of the Sun. The bearers of the corpse you so desperately seek. I know you want to know this, their powers, their weaknesses. I will tell you all I know of them and in return you will spare my life.”

Question. Can we pick this fat bastard up? I wouldn't mind picking him up if we could take him with us and stash him somewhere. Maybe take out his "core" and have a talking head.

Speaking purely from a practical perspective because really we ought to just be rid of him if we can't, for one, interrogate him elsewhere, and two, abscond quickly with whatever pieces we pick up.

This isn't even taking into consideration the possible ability for his allies to scry our location from where he is.

You turn away from the crippled Duke for a time, inspecting the control panel before you. It’s still steaming from the leftover heat and half of it has been bashed in. Abe’s handiwork no doubt. But there’s still a lever that catches your eye, one marked ‘EMERGENCY SEAL’. It must be a manual override of some sort, something that could seal the concrete tube up even if the shard was loose and the rest of the machine was broken.
You look back at the Iron Duke. What’s left of him is wedged between the two halves of the cylinder.

His information might have been greatly useful but you won’t purchase it with leaving him alive. Nor will you make a deal with him and then break it. And considering all the suffering the Duke has caused and what he has put you through, only one option seems fair.
You don’t tell him that you’ve refused the offer. You have nothing left to say to this thing.

You pull the lever and watch as the top half of the cylinder slams down, crushing the Duke’s torso beneath it and pinching it in half. Thin and watery blood leaks free from somewhere, from whatever last vestiges of flesh still remained within the metal monster. He doesn’t have time to plead or scream, you don’t even know if he noticed what was happening in time.

It is done. You find little satisfaction in the execution.

You don’t know how you’ll be fighting your way back out of here or what you’ll do or where you’ll go from now. You don’t know what’s going to happen to Beatrice or if she’ll even live. You still have little idea on how you are ever going to claw your final victory from the clutches of this city. But you have won for today and that is enough.

>>
I just want to let you know how glad I am you're running this again.
>>
Don't we have likeeee 200 wick in our lantern now with the addition of the other shard?

Does this mean Dis has no more green flame?
>>
>>2018047
Nope. 100.

Yes. No more Green Flame. Which is why we should now go seek out a human supremacist criminal gang to sell our services to. We can sell fire for them, get lotsa money, use their safe houses, information and transportation.
>>
>>2018101
Or we could just relight lamps so people can get flame the old fashioned way
>>
And again, if you liked this thread, please vote.

we still need to destroy any depositories they have of green flame to outright destroy it all, my bet is there going to be on a rationing system or some such
>>
>>2018106
But that way we don't get safehouses, money, contacts, info, transportation.

>>2018169
They had four shipments a day, I don't think they have much in the way of stockpiling.

What info can we glean from this?
>>
>>2018199
any good company will have a stockpile of goods in case of congestion or production issues its just common sense

I will however concede that its not a very big stockpile and that time will be our ally in creating the issue.

>what can we glean from this

they are of the rich and powerful of Dis, likely a witch or two amongst them but no more then a few witches, they have sway in the senate regardless of if they are actually senators, and the number no more than six KEY conspirators

from an earlier statment we know the rest cant extract the power or even be near the shard as directly as the duke could and likely have other methods of extracting the power from the shards

I think the other questors are gong to overplay what he said. I believe he didn't mean that all the others are of the Dark, just that he was the only Flame Artist among them.

It's pretty interesting that all of them journeyed to the Sun. In the flesh.
>>
>>2018583
We also know they have means to travel to the Sun. Which we'll probably need to restore it.
>>
>>2018597
Good point.

If we wanted to hurry the crisis along, we could search for for the stockpile and blow it up.

Speaking of the Senate, remember the Safe Fire Act? We might want to find out who voted for it.
>>
>>2018591
I think its less that and more they all had to pitch in in whatever way they could to make it work

>>2018597
Im personally a bit effy on that but that had some means of fucking with it thats for sure

>If we wanted to hurry the crisis along, we could search for for the stockpile and blow it up.

my thinking exactlywe create more anarchy on the way out in order for abe and beatrice to esape easier

I spent half an hour staring at candles and playing with wax.

I think im ready for the next thread
>>
>>2031193
Me too. Think we'll get to keep the tail?
>>
Oh this thread is still alive? Well in case any of you don't look at my twitter, next thread is tomorrow in roughly 11 hours. Or later if I sleep in. Either or.
