/qst/ - Quests

Year 2199, 20th January......exactly 50 years since World War 3 erupted and devastated countless nations and millions of life. The aftermath of this conflict left the very earth itself polluted by residues of nuclear bombs and weaponry. Humankind now live in mega cities that are either interconnected or separated far away from each other, each holding nearly half a billion human life at once. As a result, shortage of daily necessities and overpopulation becomes an everyday issue in every mega cities. Crime run rampant especially in the lower part of the mega cities as gargantuan corporations and government that are infested with corruption control every aspect of these safe havens on the face of Earth.

The story begins in one of these mega cities, Zeus-01 to be exact. It is one of the biggest and earliest mega city ever to be erected in the aftermath of WW3 and of course, more corrupted than most mega cities. Up above in the skyline, Sector 1 which is where the rich and wealthy lives in luxury at the cost of the tears and sweats of those below. Sector 2, the "mid-section" of the mega city. Here are where the public servants, the white collars and the ordinary folks alike live. Decent housing and living conditions for this mega city's standard makes living here as is a blessing itself. And then there is Sector 3, or the "Gates of Hades" so would the denizens of Zeus-01 would call it. An industrial wonderland filled with factories and chem labs as polluted gas fills the air making the usage of gas masks paramount for day to day survival. The folks who live here are either poor, uneducated factory worker, or criminals and gangsters that makes the life of its citizens even harder. Law enforcers of this parts are particularly brutal and indiscriminate in dealing with crime, executing criminals on the spot. Finally there is the lowest part of the mega city and why Sector 3 is called "Gate of Hades", the Necropolis. A place truly devoid of any human kindness, or humanity for that matter. Bio enhancement and alterations that would be illegal are used here, giving its people bestial features and causing them to be treated poorly by "normals", which is how they call unaltered humans there. Often citizens from Sector 3 and sometimes from Sector 2 are kidnapped and changed into the aforementioned altered humans to be turned into cheap labor, doomed to slave off their days in the depths of the uncaring Necropolis.

She keeps Moët et Chandon, in her pretty cabinet

".....bert"

Let them eat cake,' she says, just like Marie Antoinette

"Mi.....Al...."

A built-in remedy, for Kruschev and Kennedy, at anytime an invitation you can't decline...

"....ster ...lbe.."

Caviar and cigarettes, well versed in etiquette. Extraordinarily nice!

"MISTER ALBERT!"

Suddenly, a voice breaks you from your daydream. The company's service android lady is pouting at you for ignoring her.

"Mister Albert I need you to sign here....and here....yes. Now your transfer to Zeus-01 branch of NeuroTech have been completed. We look forward to your service in this company!", she said cheerfully.

She's a Killer Queen.... Gunpowder, gelatine. Dynamite with a laser beam! Guaranteed to blow your mind. (Anytime~)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your first day in the office goes well uneventful. Made some friends, introduced yourself, same old shit. At the end of the day you blend in with the moving crowd at dusk. Countless human faces moves through the sea of people, none of it that you recognize nor did you even bother to remember. Go back to your new home. Sleep. Wake up. Rinse and repeat. This is your life for the past 3 years. An endless cycle of the mundane and ordinary without any end in sight. Deep inside you felt like changing something, to give your existence a bit more meaning to it. But alas, you have long accepted your fate. Not all are destined for something greater. As you enter a dark alley, you see somebody leaning on a wall, clutching his stomach with his left hand and holding something with his right.

The man passed by you and seconds later you realized that this man is leaving a trail of blood behind him. You turned around and you found the man just falling down to the ground as you turned your eyes on him. His face is pale, clear sign of massive blood loss. On his right arm you realised what the man was holding is a pistol. You're not too privy of firearm types, so you do not know what exact model it is. A surge of emotion burst within you. Will this finally be the turning point to your uneventful life?

>Ask the man what happened to him? Who did this?
>Call an ambulance. This man need immediate medical assistance. [Law]
>Take his firearm and leave the scene. This man won't last anyway. [Crime]
>No...this is not your problem. Ignore him and go back home.

The man is losing blood at an alarming rate! You quickly pulled out your phone to call an ambulance!

"Pl...please...", the man croaks. His voice is getting fainter by the second.

"K-keep.....this safe...do not....let them....take it!"

He pushed what looked like a small data chip into your hand. As he does that, his body that is pressing on yours is shivering. He is mustering all of his remaining strength to pass on this item to you. And moments later, his lifeless body slumps down to the ground in front of you. Moments later, the ambulance arrives and paramedics enter the scene to check on the unknown man. The police also arrives on the scene and proceeds to ask questions involving the man. After not getting much answers from you (you did not mention anything about the chip), the officers dismisses and thanked you for your cooperation.

You put the data chip in your pocket and returned home safely, though you felt as if you were being watched along the way. You took a nice cold bath with your office clothes are sent to the laundromart. Exiting the shower, you examined the chip while admiring the view outside your new home.

At that moment however, you realized a red dot had just appeared on your chest.....

You jumped out of the way fast enough to see your glass window shatter to a million pieces. Accompanying it, the sound of your heart ready to burst from the shock, adrenaline pumping through your body unlike anything you have ever experienced in your life.

A few seconds later you peeked through your broken window, your eyes wildly searching for your assailant. The ones who aimed for your life would most likely be targeting you from atop the buildings surrounding your home. But moments after that, another shot was discharged hitting the side of the window you were peeking from.

"Who would want to take my life? I've never done anything in my life to warrant such things happening to me!", these thoughts ran through your mind as you trying your damnest best to figure out why anybody would ever try to kill an office worker like you. But then you had an epiphany. The data chip of course! It must be holding something really important, so much so that anybody that knows its existence must be eliminated. That explains why the man you met earlier was injured!

---------------------------------------------

You managed to sneak out of your home and into a closed alley. The assassin aiming for your life would not be able to target you here from up above so you are safe for the time being. But alas, time is of the essence and he or she would be able to track you down soon enough. You decided that the best course of action would be to....

>Go deeper into the center of Sector 2 and hide in the crowds. Dead in the night till the daybreak there will always be countless people there.

>Immediately call the police to help you. It maybe the safest option. (Law)

>Flee towards Sector 3. It maybe dangerous in there but at least the smog and dust helps hide your presence.

You sat down in a corner of the alley and started dialing 9111...

"Zeus-01 Sector 2 emergency hotline, what is the problem citizen?", a robotic voice replied.

"I-I was attacked! By somebody with a firearm! I was at home just out of the shower when some dude tried to line a shot on my chest!"

"Affirmative. Assault, unlawful use of firearm and an attempt on a civilian's life. A squad of armed law enforcers will be sent your way, citizen. Please refrain from moving away from your current position.", and immediately after that, the call ended and silence fills the air around the alley. Not a soul to be heard.

And you sat there......unmoving, reevaluating your chances of survival. What if the police couldn't arrive fast enough? Should you book it right here and now? Before you were able to answer these questions you imposed upon yourself, you heard footsteps coming from the far end of the alley. Every second passed, the footsteps becomes closer and closer to you.

Your heart starts beating faster and faster, cold sweat drips down your forehead. Is this it? Is this how you will die? Trapped like a mouse in a dark alley?

>Hide in the shadow and jump on that guy. You're not gonna die a dog's death that's for sure

>Run now! There is no way you could fight someone with a gun

>Continue hiding and hope that the police will come here before he finds you
>>

>Continue hiding and hope that the police will come here before he finds you
If this guy's got a gun, he can just shoot us down if we run. And I get a bad feeling about trying to attack an assassin while we've got no combat training or experience. Especially if we do well and wrangle the gun off him, the police may then arrive, see that we have the gun, and go for us.

You continue to hid yourself behind a dumpster where the darkness conceals you. You take a deep breath and sat still. The footsteps are getting closer, no, now its not even a meter away from you! Your assailant is very close by. With your eyes shut, you pray to god that your life is spared tonight.

BZZZTTTT!!!

That sound almost made you jump out of your hiding place. Sounds like a cellphone ringtone. Your supposed assailant answers the call. A man's voice can be heard out of the receiving end. He sounds angry.

"Cynthia! Do you even know what time it is right now! What the hell are you doing this late in the night outside! For goodness sake I'd better see you in the house when I get back or you'll be in a big trouble young lady!"

"Yes, yes okay Uncle Phil. I just ran into some trouble along the way. I'll be back soon.", the person who you assumed is the one trying to kill you answers. She immediately cuts off the call after answering.

"Ugh, Uncle Phil is such a worrywart!", she said before running off from the sound of it.

You peeked out of your hiding place and manages to see the back of the girl just before she exits the alley. You breathed a sigh of relief. Faint noises of police sirens can also be heard from the distance. Well looks like god really did answer your prayers this time. As you walk towards the exit of the alley, a man clad in black clothing enters the alley from the same way you are exiting it. It seems he is carrying a......gun.

Shit.

[The assassin got Albert. You are now playing as Cynthia Parker, the girl I mentioned earlier in the thread and the one who passed by Albert just now.]

For your whole life you've been living in an agriculture sector, surrounded by nothing but animal droppings and manure. Every day since you reach your teenage years you've been hoping to live in the big cities, living a fun life surrounded by neon lights, techno music and fashionable clothing. Its not like life in the farm was THAT bad. The green landscape and fresh air of Agri-Sectors of mega cities certainly sound like a paradise to many but it just gets boring when you've been experiencing it all of your life. Not to mention your grandma had been very strict on your usage of gadget and technologies saying that it will "rot your brain" and gives you bad influences. Maybe. Maybe a little?

But that's irrelevant! you're a city girl now and that's all in the past. Uncle Phil and Aunt Delilah allowed you to live with them if you earned your living with them as a courier for Uncle Phil's delivery company. It's fairly easy. Just send parcels to locations where the delivery truck can't reach. Plus you get a free (company) scooter you can use (during operation hours only)!

Uncle Phil just called you to come back home now. Guess you took enjoying the city life too much on your first day here huh? You saw a weird ass guy in some weird cloak and mask enter the alley you just came out of. You didn't bother finding out what's he up to considering you do not want to be dead on your first day here. You could also hear police sirens nearby, did something happen? As you are atleast 10 meters away from the alley you heard a scream!

A police car arrives near where the scream originates and police officers rushed out of the car with their pistol unholstered. They stopped and aimed at someone in the alleyway.

"Freeze. This is the police drop your gun right now!", and then silence.

"I said drop your fucking gun!", one of the police officers repeat, clearly much more agitated than before.

You then....

>Flee the scene. There is no reason for you to obstruct police work.
>Try to snoop around and see whats happening.
>Use this as an excuse to go around town more. Uncle Phil will understand.

You, like the responsible teenager that you are, decided that this incident is an acceptable excuse for you to roam around town a little while longer. As you walk away from the police and the alley you heard gunshots and screams. It's probably nothing. Surely the police can handle whatever's happening there....right?

-------------------------------------------------------------

After some time, you reach downtown Sector 2. This place might as well be a part of Sector 3 due to the smokes and fumes seeping through in this part of the sector. Not to mention this place is where thousands of trucks from Sector 3 stops by to drop containers carrying newly manufactured machineries and products from the factories, meaning if the center of Sector 2 never sleeps, this place never rest. There is always trucks going in and out of here every minute without fail. The people who live here are also not the most upstanding members of society. Drug dealers, prostitution, semi-illegal techs you name it. Why did you come here in the first place? Well let's just say you're feeling a little bit brave and you want to see the darker side of Sector 2 and not because you fell asleep in the bus and missed your stop.

Near where you stand there is a robed figure delivering some sort of sermon to the crowd around here.

"Come hither brothers and sisters. Come, and listen to the call of the Slumbering God! The Sleeping Prince! The Ruler of the Abyss! Come and commune with him, enter His sleeping realm and achieve enlightenment. I was once a but a lowly human like you, but He have shown me the way! And now I have been chosen to SPREAD the good word! The end is nigh, and He will awaken soon! Follow me! Follow us! Be the ones who are chosen to eternally live in his everlasting kingdom!"

The man delivering the sermon have 2 similarly robed, but masked and unnaturally bulky bodyguard on each of his side. They stood there unmoving, not a single motion can be seen from their body. Creepy.

You....

>Approach this robed figure and ask him about this "Slumbering God"

>Wait for another bus (though slim chance there are any this late into the night) and hope the robed figures won't bother you about their cult.

>Avoid them altogether and check out the tech shop nearby.

You enter the tech shop, selling many different electronic parts such as computer processors, data chip of varying size and capacity, to name a few. You could also identify some A.I. core which are usually illegal for individual private possession. Through this you can assess that most, if not all the items sold in this store are black market stuff.

The person handling this store is a scantily dressed woman with quite the collection of tattoo on her body. She doesn't look like she's in a very good mood though. Her expressions is as if she's in a perpetual state of irritation. She only took notice of you moments after you enter the store.

"Oh sorry didn't see you there doll. Welcome to my humble store. Here I sell and buy electronic goods store wouldn't sell nor except. And I have the best prices around too. Fell free to browse around a little while longer. Not as if I'm closing soon."

You examined the items available around the shop for a few minutes before the store keeper talks to you again.

"Hey uhh....you're not with the feds are ya?"

You gave her a mild smile and a light laugh before denying it. She laughed along with you, albeit with a certain degree of nervousness. She seemed twitchy all of a sudden. You wonder if she's experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a drug of some kind. Not surprising since drug junkies are not really that much of an uncommon sights around here.

As you turned your back on her, you heard her approaching you. She didn't even bother going at you silently. Even her footsteps sound erratic. Even so, with surprising speed, she is already within arms reach of your back....

....but you were fast enough to dodge her as she tries to grab you! You turned around, and what you saw was quite the shocker. Her face now paler than before. Her eyes looks empty and saliva drooling out of her mouth. On one of her hands she was holding what looked like a wet piece of cloth. Was she trying to knock you out?

She didn't give up so easily though as she now leaped towards you, pinning you to the ground and knocking some of the merchandise on the shelves down along with you! You try to hold her hands away from you as she try to smother your face with that wet piece of cloth she's holding. Displaying unnatural strength for her physique, she almost manages to do just that. Luckily, you succeeded in swinging a swift kick on her abdomen and she rolled away in pain.

You took this chance to run the hell away as fast as you can. You reached the door and opens it....

"Well, well, well.....what do we have here? A lost lamb in this sea of filth."

It's the guy giving the sermon earlier! And his bodyguards on each of his flank.

"Ah..... I see that you are in quite a pickle here young one. Don't worry. You are in no harm under my sight."

The storekeeper immediately rushes towards you after she recovered, but stops in her tracks as she realized the new visitors coming to her shop.

"Brother Ignus! I-I didn't see you there...."

"Not surprising since you were rushing towards this young lady like a rabid dog, Selena..."

"B-Brother Ignus! You promised that if I....if I brought another into our church...If i did just that, you would let me commune with Him! Hear His whispers again! Please Brother Ignus, I can just feel His voice just reaching my eardrum! You must let me-umfff!"

One of Ignus' bodyguards grabs Selena by the head and slams it to the ground!

"You really are quite the chatterbox aren't you Selena? Your actions tonight might endanger our church, perhaps even dooms it. Perhaps I have to administer the punishment myself. Let this be a bitter reminder for you that Saint Daius do not appreciate this kind of behavior in his congregation."

Ignus pulls out a cat o nine whip out of his robe, and removes Selena's top off her body as one of his bodyguards still holding her down.

"With pain, comes atonement!"

CRACK!

"With shame, comes humility!"

CRACK!

"With ignorance, comes enlightenment!"

CRACK!

And with the end of Selena's flagellation so does her cries. Her back, bruised and bloody, with some parts where the bone is visible disturbs you. From the looks of it, she seems to have fainted from the pain. The large man finally releases Selena from his grip and her body slumps down to the floor.

Ignus turns around to you but before he could speak, you ran as fast as you can from that place. You don't know where your legs took you, but before you know it, you arrived at a bus stop. There, a bus is waiting, almost too conveniently timed. You enter the bus, payed for the ticket and sat down silently in the empty bus. The bus driver said nothing, almost as if he understood what just happened.

As the bus reaches the stop near Uncle Phil's house you looked up the window and saw the (sky glass filtered) sun rose, it's light banishing the darkness enveloping Zeus-01. You checked your phone. It's 6.30 in the morning. Uncle Phil must be worried sick, you thought to yourself.

As the bus reaches your stop, you slowly walked out of it and towards home. Uncle Phil is in front of the door sleeping outside. The old man must've sat there waiting for you all night. You woke him up and you're greeted with the most furious face you have ever seen in your whole life. You raised your arm as he stands up, hoping to deflect whatever punishment he will give you for what you have done. Not that you don't deserve it.

But suddenly, a pair of arm wraps around you. Uncle Phil is hugging you and from the wet sensation on your shoulders, he is....crying?

"Oh you stupid little girl! Where have you been? I was worried sick! I couldn't stop thinking what if....what if I had lost you! My heart won't be able to bear it Cynthia! What would I tell your grandma back at Eden-02?!"

You stood there silently, listening to your uncle. Usually you'd be the kind to quickly talk back on him. But maybe this guilt you're feeling, the fact that if something just happened to you back there would destroy Uncle Phil seals your mouth shut.

Aunt Delilah opens the door and gives you both a light smile and invites you for breakfast.
