You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and after an intense fight you've managed to help your long-time friend and ally Tia Halibel attain something that's truly remarkable... and which you hope is unique. Her second stage of release is powerful, much more powerful than you'd even reckoned such a form would be despite not changing her all that much physically. The only visible difference was the 'sharkskin' material covering her torso and left arm and the expansion of her mask fragments, and though you gathered that these represent a deadly effective form of enhanced offense as well as a deterrence against direct physical attack you also realize that her dramatic increase in reiryoku is deadlier still.

And in spite of all that, you get the feeling there's even more to it.

“She'll be fine,” you declare, setting Halibel down almost tenderly and allowing her old companions to rush to her side. Of the three it's Apacci who moves the slowest, her focus on you even if her eyes are on Halibel. “I think it's more a question of mental strain... I had to push her hard enough to overcome the trust she's gotten used to showing me.”

White slowly spreads across your haori as the blood staining it flows back into your veins, an eerie reversal of when it soaked into the fabric just a few moments ago. You can feel several pairs of eyes watching in fascination... you're not sure exactly when you gained that ability, but either way you need this back inside you. Maybe it's a residual effect of Rosa having been released, affecting your untrained use of Blut to heal your own body?

Whatever. So long as it works.

“I'm gonna need to rest a bit myself,” you sigh, taking a seat right where you've been standing and eventually lying on the ground. “The whole thing pushed me as well.”

“Will you be ready after I've caught my breath, Apacci?”

You can practically feel the eyes of her fellow arrancar fall on you in dismay.

“You can't be serious!” Mila Rose growls. “After doing that to Lady Halibel, you wanna do it to Apacci too?”

“It's the climax of the training they took on themselves,” you remind her sternly, eyes turned skyward. “I don't like doing it either, but if I disrespected their determination and refused my part I wouldn't deserve to call them my friends, would I?”

“I don't know,” Apacci admits quietly. “In a way I wish I'd have gone first... I'd have had an easier time of it.”

“That's fine,” you reply, and the waver of reiatsu from all three arrancar betrays their surprise at how easily you yielded to her on the issue. “I've never been a hollow, I don't know what was going on inside Halibel's head when she... I dunno, 'ascended' I guess. And I can't say I know what finishing your training will put you through either, Apacci.”

“So we'll do this when you're good and ready. Not a moment before.”

That's creepy. Riku sucking her own blood back into her body from sheer will? The Riku/Rosa/Tenkotsuki synchronization rate is slowly accelerating

And then Apacci walks away.

“Where are you going?” Sung-Sun demands, only to have a hand stop her as she turns to follow.

“Let her go,” Halibel insists quietly. “She needs her time to think.”

“Mistress Halibel?”

“Trust me,” Halibel insists before crashing once more, and passing out.

“Would you two take her up to my office and put her on the couch?” you add, still lying flat on your back. “And have Tenri look after her. I would be willing to bet she has a trick or two up her sleeves.”

After the two follow your orders, doing something they'd have done anyway grudgingly for no other reason than the fact that you told them to do it, Rangiku takes a seat next to you.

“So what's wrong with her, really?”

“Perceptive, girl,” you chuckle, feeling the residual influence of your Bankai finally fading. “She possesses a small amount of divine reiryoku you know... I'm not sure how that reacted to the changes in her reiryoku, but it may have made her first time using that form harder than it would've been otherwise.”

“I see,” Rangiku frowns. “So what do you want to do now?”

“I need to unwind,” you sigh, slowly rising back to your feet. “That was too emotionally heavy, so you know what I'm gonna do now?”

“... is it beating up on Renji?” Rangiku sighs dramatically.

“Called it!” you reply with a cheerful clap of your hands.

“Well, well, well...” you muse quietly to yourself. “How should I go about doing this...”

“How about full Onmitsukidō?” Rangiku suggests. “I mean, if you're trying to enjoy yourself and get a good response, that'd be how I would do it.”

“Excellent suggestion,” you smile, starting into the incantations required to completely erase your presence from the Seireitei.

After silently creeping in close to the Lieutenants, you spring your plan into motion. As Ōmaeda and Renji exchange blows you step between them and raise your hands to stop their respective shikais in place. Getetsuburi you grab by one of its spikes and Zabimaru by their curved, axe-like head. Then you spin in place, lifting both Lieutenants by their weapons and slinging them past each other before releasing their weapons.

Renji bounces once off his head before stopping himself against a tree, while Ōmaeda ends up in the moat.

“W-what was that?” Ōmaeda sputters as he comes back up sopping wet.

“Someone's here,” Miyako realizes. “My guess is either Captain Shihōin or Captain Kusajishi.”

“Good guess,” you reply aloud. “I stopped by to have some fun, and relax after helping with Tia's training.”

“So we've been demoted to chew toys now?” Renji grumbles, dropping back to the ground from his perch against the side of his tree.

“Silly Renji,” you chuckle. “You were always my chewtoy. Remember how we met?”

“Yeah, you crashed one of our lectures,” Renji recalls.

“This is how I teach,” you explain calmly. “Worked for Rangiku and Gin just fine.”

“How are they even alive?” Kira wonders aloud.

“This is how Aizen likes to fight,” you tell them, remaining hidden from their senses. “And his isn't the only power that can twist your senses and use them against you. Those sorts of powers are always among the most feared, and as Lieutenants you need to learn how to fight against them.”

“So this is a test?” Hinamori muses. “What are the terms of this fight?”

“I'll give you sixty seconds to think up a counter to my technique,” you tell them before quickly repositioning yourself. “During that time I'll mostly be toying with you, but after sixty seconds I'll start attacking you for real. Sixty seconds after that I'll raise the difficulty. If you can draw blood in three minutes I'll consider it your win.”

“And if we can't figure it out?” Kira asks.

You realize that shrugging is kind of a meaningless gesture right now, but you can't help doing it. “Then you lose.”

“Begin.”

Renji starts by swinging Zabimaru at the last place where he heard your voice, which is actually rather sensible. But you're not there at all anymore, and you even manage to avoid the stinging smoke that Ōmaeda created to try and use against you. Hinamori seems to be doing some sort of kidō, which you watch carefully from a nearby treetop as Kira takes a knee... it seems that he's trying to listen for you.

Of all the Lieutenants' responses, Miyako's is perhaps the most surprising: she simply backs against a large rock, which she reinforces with a mid-level bakudō barrier. Simple, and against you maybe not a perfect strategy, but it's honestly a refreshingly simple solution.

“Not bad,” you call out before dodging a swipe of Zabimaru's blade. “But not enough either.”

“Sixty seconds are up.”

Of the various Lieutenants Miyako has taken concrete defensive steps, leaving you to...

You're not sure whether Kira's actually capable of hearing your movements... either he's that confident or that desperate, but if he actually can hear you and respond quickly enough that could be a problem. If he handed a lucky blow on you this exercise could end before you even get the chance to press the Lieutenants at all, and that's something you can't allow as an instructor.

“That low stance,” Tenkotsuki muses. “Does he believe that will necessitate an attack from above?”

“Likely,” Rosa replies.

And you have to agree, so instead of attacking from the direction he seems to be inviting you to use, you step carefully into the blind spot behind his back.

“Kira, behind you!”

At Hinamori's shout the Lieutenant draws his zanpakuto, turns on one knee, and slashes through the air where your knees were a split second before. Ah, so that's how it is?

“Damn, I missed?” he grumbles.

“Of course,” you reply, sidestepping Renji's attack at the sound of your voice. “Well done, Hinamori. But how long can you maintain that technique?”

“What technique?” Ōmaeda asks, glancing around himself.

“She's figured it out already?” Hinamori grumbles. “Did I not hide them well enough?”

“You did a good job, but my reiatsu sense is better than yours,” you point out. “What may have seemed hidden to you could still be obvious to me... though it was almost enough to fool me.”

The hidden kidō filaments criscrossing the training grounds are like a spider's web, all connecting to a point near where she can rest a hand on it to interpret the feedback. It's actually a remarkably advanced technique, and performed quite a bit better than you might have expected, but still one you've seen before.

You decide to play around a bit more with the last few seconds in the second minute, and position yourself on the far side of Ōmaeda's smoke.

“Tenran!”

With a weak, unincanted spell you blast the smoke in a single direction: back into the center of the battlefield.

“Damn it Ōmaeda...” Miyako grumbles from her defensive position as she wraps a small cloth over her face. Kira begins to spin his blade to move the smoke a second time when you and Tenkotsuki put your plan into motion.

“Kira, to your left!”

This time it's not Hinamori, even if it sounds like her voice. Instead the words are yours in a voice you've borrowed for the occasion. Kira stops trying to cast his own Tenran and swings at where he thinks you're going to be only to find himself staring down a second kidō of your own device. His eyes widen and grow unfocused, then he falls flat on his back.

“Kira!” Hinamori shouts. “What happened?”

“You shouted at him!” Ōmaeda insists.

“Ōmaeda, behind you!” you shout.

“Shit!” he yells, expecting an attack that never comes.

“See, that's another problem,” you say, still using Hinamori's voice. “Relying on a single source of information means there's a single point of failure.”

“That's not me!” Hinamori shouts. “She's figured out how to mimic my voice!”

“Renji, to your left!” you shout. He overthinks it and refuses to respond, so you whack him in the side of the head and send him reeling. In the mean time Miyako manages to clear the smoke with a mild Tenran, before shooting Omaeda a dirty look.

“Two minutes,” you announce. “Play time's over.”

Your attack on Hinamori abandons all caution for speed, momentarily revealing your position as your concealing spell flickers from the strain of your movement. But in exchange you easily slam her to the ground and pin her there with a pair of silvery metallic rods, one through each bicep.

Then, for good measure, you hijack her kidō net.

“Ōmaeda, move forward!” you shout in Hinamori's voice.

“No, stay where you are!” Hinamori tries to shout, but it's too late. Ōmaeda's shunpo places him firmly in reach of your attack... only to find that Hinamori has ended her spell.

“Wait, do you want me to move or not?” Ōmaeda demands.

“Fall back towards me,” Miyako declares, and her fellow Lieutenant obliges her. Interesting... what exactly is she planning?

“Got you!” Renji shouts, sweeping Zabimaru over Hinamori's prone form and very nearly leaving a cut on your leg as you dodge. In exchange you leave a shallow cut in his right shoulder.

“Nice try, Lieutenant.”

“Let's see what you have planned for me, Miyako,” you decide, dashing in towards the Thirteenth Division's Lieutenant.

It seems you've sprung her trap.

“Seppa!” she shouts, slamming her palm against the ground. Clever... she held back so late that you couldn't help but leave a deep footprint in the newly sandy ground in front of your sister-in-law-by-adoption. Warned of your approach she summons up a pyramidal kidō barrier just in time for your sword to collide with it. The simple slash bites deep through the glowing reishi, but also tells her where you're attacking her from. She lifts her head behind the barrier, and draws her sword.

“Scribe...”

Instantly, the situation changes. Having teased out where you are and ensured that you were looking directly at her, it seems Miyako was able to release her zanpakuto... meaning the absence of any people here is a dream.

“Tenkotsuki!” you call out, taking a sidestep as you feel the barest hints of a threat coming your way.

Your zanpakuto doesn't answer. This is affecting your mind... not as an illusion would, but rather by triggering your own brain to create the images you're seeing: in this case by erasing your opponents from your vision just as you had erased yourself from theirs. And since it's affecting your mind, clouding your judgment, it's made it hard to hear Tenkotsuki's voice.

You sidestep again, silently musing that while Miyako may have put you in a dream-like state with her shikai your body still feels the approaching reiatsu of the Lieutenants' attacks. It gives you a chance to use your ridiculous speed to dodge attacks you can't even see coming.

But that being said, this isn't going to last forever.

You feel yourself exhale slowly as your focus turns inwards, deeper into your own soul, until you find yourself face to face with Tenkotsuki.

“Ah, so I see you figured it out on your own,” she muses. “That you are still awake.”

“It's a daydream,” you nod in agreement. “My reiatsu sensing still works and I still have some control of my body even if it's imprecise, but I don't think I can keep fighting them like this. Not without resorting to the sort of methods that'd lead to unacceptable collateral damage.”

“I believe I can be of some service, in that case,” Tenkotsuki tells you. “If you would be willing to trust me, I could take control of your body for long enough to counter the effect that has placed you into this dream-like state.”

You are Tamamo-no-Mae, daughter aspect of the august Inari-Ōkami, who currently fills the role of zanpakuto to a shinigami by the name of Kusajishi Riku.

She is a good-hearted woman, if rather unfortunate in her birthright. It was something of a gamble binding yourself to her all those years ago, though you feel that this ended far better for you both than you had any right to expect. Now she has placed her trust in you to continue a lesson she had intended to teach the Lieutenants who have been placed under her authority. Due to the effects of one of their zanpakutos she is currently in a state not unlike a waking dream, leaving her only able to dodge and weave to avoid incoming attacks at a greatly diminished capacity.

It is your intention to finish the lesson on her behalf.

Shiba Miyako, a woman whose relationship to your partner and wielder is more fictive than anything else due to the complicated series of adoptions and marriages involved, is the one whose zanpakuto has become a problem. She swings her blade only to find your own parrying it.

“Captain?” she asks, likely realizing that Kusajishi Riku should still be under the effects of her zanpakuto's release. “Are you...”

You do not allow her to finish the question, instead planting a kick in her stomach that knocks her back several feet.

“Lady Riku is currently unavailable,” you inform her with a polite bow. “In her stead I shall serve as your opponent.”

“Wait... don't tell me that's Tenkotsuki?” a familiar voice greets you.

“Zabimaru!” the red-haired shinigami who has joined Shiba Miyako in this sparring match exclaims. “I had no idea you could still manifest!?”

“We can't,” a childish voice interrupts. “Least not for long.”

“Then save your energy and do it the normal way,” Zabimarus wielder grumbles.

“They are correct, Lieutenant Abarai,” you inform the young man with a pleasant smile. “I am indeed Tenkotsuki. Lady Riku was growing annoyed with Lieutenant Shiba's shikai, and so she passed off temporary control of her body to me.”

“That's insane!” Lieutenant Ōmaeda complains.

“I find your tone somewhat insulting, Lieutenant,” you chastise the man. “However, to address your point, such cooperation is far from unprecedented in my relationship with my wielder.”

“While I do appreciate your skill at manipulating dreams, you are still an amateur,” you smile, effortlessly stepping forth into the space between you and Lieutenant Shiba to perform Hakufuku. Her eyes droop, and in her moment of weakness you strike.

“Welcome to my dreamscape, Lady Shiba,” you declare.

“What have you done?” she demands, glancing around at the familiar-yet-unfamiliar surroundings. “And more importantly... if you've done what I think you did... how?”

“It is not in my nature to accept rivals,” you tell her, taking a step away from her. “However I find myself lacking the ability to induce dreams even if I can still manipulate them as easily as breathing. Which is why I would like to express my gratitude, your zanpakuto has made my task so much simpler.”

“So this is a dream?” Renji realizes aloud. “I can't believe Lieutenant Shiba's technique was hijacked so easily...”

“And now you will learn your lesson for the day,” you tell him, eyes falling heavily on the young Lieutenant. “I apologize, my... sensibilities are not like those of a mortal. This may not be pleasant, but it is necessary.”

As Renji tries to continue the fight, you allow him to dream that his blow strikes true... only to find that he has impaled Lieutenant Hinamori by mistake.

Hinamori dreams that she has been attacked by Ōmaeda and Abarai, forced to fight them off under the mistaken belief that they are being manipulated.

Ōmaeda sees his Captain, and dreams that she has been so disappointed by him that she threatened to expel him from the Onmitsukidō unless he can land a hit on her in a match. He believes that he is being totally outclassed and beaten, with his career and pride on the line.

Kira is truly unconscious, so you leave him be for now. As things stand you are unsure that Shiba Miyako's shikai is capable of influencing him.

You could land a blow on each of them when they are in such a state... but you also believe that might be considered a step too far, assuming the Lieutenants would not already consider your actions so far to be such. So instead of that, you allow the dream to end with your blade pressed lightly against Abarai's throat.

He looks down at you in shock, then over your shoulder at an equally shocked Hinamori.

“I even went so far as to tell you explicitly,” you observe with a cool detachment most mortals could never hope to maintain in such a situation, “that this was all dreaming. That it was not real. And yet you fell for the tricks, you believed the images I showed you. You did not think, you panicked.”

“How could we have possibly...” Ōmaeda begins, still glancing about as if his Captain might materialize out of thin air and snap his neck.

“As we have learned in our battles with Aizen Sōsuke firsthand, his Kyōka Suigetsu does not affect reiatsu-sensing abilities,” you explain to them. “As such I allowed you to utilize that sense normally. Had you bothered to check what your senses were telling you against that critical line of evidence, you might have noticed the discrepancy.”

“In addition,” you continue, “the sensations I was creating in your mind through Lieutenant Shiba's shikai were imperfect. Had you maintained a calm, collected state of mind you would have noticed this as well.”

“Were this a battle against Aizen himself you would all have been struck down, effortlessly, save perhaps Lieutenant Shba.”

“Since I am so rarely afforded the opportunity, I am certain Lady Riku would not mind if I spoke with Zabimaru for a few moments... one zanpakuto to another.”

“Is that so?” Renji frowns. “Well... I suppose...”

“If Tenkotsuki wants to speak with us,” the familiar voice speaks again, “then we'd be fools to deny her request. Manifest us, Renji. We won't be long.”

Renji grumbles some more at the notion that he is being ordered around by his own sword, but he abides by Zabimaru's request. A chesty, monkey-like woman chained to a snake-like brat appear at Renji's side.

“Sup,” Monkey greets you.

“Ah, as refined and elegant as ever,” you bow. “Let us reconvene somewhere more... isolated. Perhaps the tea room overlooking the Division grounds.”

“Fine by me,” Monkey sighs, “Come on, snake, let's get this over with.”

Once clear of any shinigami, you spring your question on them:

>Why do you manifest as two beings if you are a single zanpakuto? I am confused.

It did. Renji in particular realized how little he actually thinks in battle generally, and until that point only Miyako was really aware of how fucked they'd be against Aizen.
>Will Starrk ever get a Segunda?
He still spends most of his time sleeping, and unlike Halibel and Apacci wasn't in Resurreccion this whole time. So one of the prerequisites for even trying to reach a Segunda isn't met.

Apacci expected this when Halibel brought it up, but it blindsided the other two a little.

“What are your thoughts on Lieutenant Abarai's current abilities,” you ask in a low tone, “and more importantly, do you believe that he will be ready for the battles this winter?”

Monkey takes a few seconds to think of her answer before speaking. “At this rate I can't be sure.”

“His reiatsu is still too weak,” Snake adds, hands held behind his head as he stares resolutely anywhere but at you. “Our actual Banaki'd just chew his body up, like that Kurosaki kid.”

“You calling someone a kid?” Monkey snorts dismissively. “But he's right, Renji still isn't ready... the strength of his will is unquestionable, but it's the strength of his tendons that worries me.”

“So what does your Bankai do that would cause such harm to him?” you ask. “If it is not too bold to ask?”

“It's... the term would be 'clad-type' I think,” Monkey tells you. “It'd make him stronger and faster beyond what his body could handle. Each movement would tear tendons and break bone.”

“How long do you estimate it would take for Abarai to be capable of using Bankai without risk of injury?”

“Months,” Monkey tells you, shaking her head grimly. “Maybe even a year of nonstop training, the kinda time we don't have.”

On the one hand you do not doubt the truth of Zabimaru's words, or the accuracy of their assessment. However, you also cannot help but think of all the possibilities for cheating, increasingly elaborate and dangerous beyond any reason aside from desperation. While the young Lieutenant may be the reckless sort to pursue such methods, you doubt that Zabimaru matches that recklessness. While their own desire is doubtless to see their wielder grow strong they must also understand as you do the basic reality of the situation: strong and dead are mutually exclusive conditions.

“You may wish to have Lieutenant Abarai speak with Captain Urahara,” you suggest. “While I have every confidence that I could be of assistance I am unsure that any of the methods I could utilize would work on Lady Riku, let alone one who is not my wielder.”

“And you think maybe Captain Urahara'd have a way to train Renji faster that would work?” Monkey muses, considering your suggestion carefully.

You return to the center of the training field, where the Lieutenants have been chatting. Renji is the first to notice your arrival, and looks to Zabimaru.

“Well... to me at least it's second nature,” you shrug, briefly manifesting Tenkotsuki at your side.

“Hello again,” Tenkotsuki bows gracefully before disappearing.

“Captain Kusajishi, if I may be so bold as to ask,” Hinamori begins in a low, almost concerned tone. “How much time do you spend in jinzen every week, on average?”

“At least an hour or two every day,” you guess. “I've actually taken to doing it during my morning exercise routines.”

“Wait, you can move while doing jinzen?” Renji asks skeptically.

“She can use zanjutsu with her bare hands and that's where you draw the line?” Miyako cocks her eyebrow at her pineapple-haired peer. “Seriously, why are you even surprised?”

“It's from sheer repetition,” you explain. “I mean I basically helped write the hakuda curriculum you three used in the Academy, and I've been practicing the same style of kenjutsu since the Bakumatsu. So it's almost easier to meditate while doing kata.”

“That's broken,” Ōmaeda snorts. “Must be nice being a Captain.”

“You could do the same,” you point out. “All it takes is clearing some time at the beginning or end of your day, and keeping at it every day.”

“Now if you'll excuse me, I need to...”

You are Emilou Apacci, an arrancar who has aligned herself with the Soul Society... but not because of some grandiose overarching philosophical agreement or anything. Instead it's a bunch of personal loyalties that have drawn you into this whole mess, all centered around the shinigami Kusajishi Riku. She was the one who helped you become an arrancar in the first place, freeing you from the cycle of hunger and killing which had defined your life as a hollow, and more than that has always treated you the same way she treats her own family.

If it weren't for that, you're sure that you and your fellow arrancars wouldn't be in this position... you'd probably be working for that prick son of a bitch Aizen and fighting against the Seireitei. Hell, if Captain Kusajishi asked you to throw down with a Captain you'd probably do it.

But something happened today that you're not quite sure what to make of.

The training you've been going through together with Lady Halibel has reached its final stage, and after all this time you're not sure whether you really want to go through with it. By becoming more familiar and comfortable with your resurrected forms, which see you become more like you were as hollows, you set the stage for a remarkable new transformation.

Two aspects of that caught you off guard: that it took Lady Halibel honestly believing that Lady Riku was trying to kill her to trigger the change, and that once that happened Halibel became even more hollow-like.

Captain Kusajishi's told you to leave, to spend some time sorting out your own thoughts now that you know what this process involves, and before she passed out Lady Halibel voiced her total agreement, so that's what you've done.

The only question is... where does someone like you go to think about such a serious matter?

>To speak with Starrk, the oldest arrancar you know of... and MAYBE the wisest. You think.
>To find that Kurosaki brat and his friends, you could use the 'human perspective' right now.

You decide that short of talking to Lady Halibel about her experience, the best thing to do is try to talk to Starrk. After all he was an arrancar before any of the rest of you were, and so far as you can tell he's old. In fact when you stop to think about it he's almost certainly older than Halibel, so clearly he must have a useful perspective on this whole process.

It doesn't take long to find him with your pesquisa, quickly sussing out his reiatsu with your own and tracking him down to a hammock out in the garden of the Ninth Division's printing press offices.

“Hey, Starrk,” you grumble. “I gotta talk to you.”

Starrk doesn't move. He doesn't even respond at all.

“Oi, Starrk,” you repeat, prodding the man in his ribs. Still no response.

“Starrk, wake up dammit!” you raise your voice. Still nothing?

“Man, you got some kinda talent,” you sigh. Instead of prodding him again you reach under the hammock and push upwards, rolling him out onto the ground where he lands limply on his face.

He's still asleep? “How do you even!?”

Finally, you decide you have no alternative. Building some reiatsu in your fingertips, you tap him lightly on the nose and deliver a sharp electric shock... not quite enough to be an effective attack, but sufficient to wake him up with a yelp.

“Hey dumbass, I have somethin' I've gotta ask you,” you grumble.

Starrk sits up and wipes the dirt off his face. “Damn... you coulda been gentler.”

“Tried that, didn't work, said 'fuck it',” you recount. “So you know that Lady Halibel went and found a second stage of release?”

“Yeah, I felt that fight,” Starrk sighs, sitting down on his hammock with his hands on his head. “That was some crazy shit.”

“Well, it means drawing more hollow power,” you explain carefully.

“And the problem with that is... what?” Starrk asks lazily.

“All these years I've wanted nothing more than to be less like a hollow!” you insist loudly, louder even than you intended. “And now the way to get stronger is to do the opposite!?”

Starrk shrugs before lying back down on his hammock. “Only thing I'll say about it is that we are hollows. Whether we seal it or release it doesn't matter.”

“Your call what to do with that.”
>1/2
>>
>>2010482
And then he falls silent again.

“Starrk?”

The lanky arrancar doesn't move.

“Oi, Starrk!” you repeat, raising your voice.

Still no response.

“Ah, to hell with it.”

So by the end of this training, how close will the Lts be to Rangiku's level? I ask because the vibe I've gotten is that she could easily be a captain if it wasn't for her preference to stay as her mom's Lt and politics at work. Which brings to mind what qualifies as Lt level anyway? Rereading the quest reminded me that Riku said Lts were meant to be an easy pool to draw from when replacing captains, but that the last 100 years had been harsh in that regard. If by the end of Riku's training any of them attained a full bankai, would some of them be shunted into an empty captain spot (assuming they also fulfilled the other prerequisites)? Would politics come in again due to yet more Riku approved/trained shinigamis reaching positions of power and actual personal power? Is it taken as a sign of new standards taking root for the Lt and Captain positions? I mean, Riku learning about the numbered kido being meant as an actual curriculum in and of itself sounds somewhat important in terms of schooling and improving your skills, instead of just brute forcing a handful of useful combat spells. While I don't actually expect these revelations and how Riku consistently trains people into high-level fighters to change a whole lot anytime soon (not everyone can become a captain), what would the far-reaching implications and knock-off results be?
>>
>>2010878
is there any meta version of rangiku? I've never touched the game
>>
>>2011149
Rangiku has been captain level for a long time, she's explicitly staying as Riku's Lt because she likes it. Which might have to end sometime soon, we still have empty spots iirc
>>
>>2011156
Don't bother with it, it's utter garbage.
>>
>>2011254
I know, I just kinda want to see the cheesecake art
>>
>>2011156
If by "meta" you mean viable at the upper tiers of PVP, then no. The "tag team" version that uses cooperative attacks with Haineko is pretty good, easily her best version, but her strong attacks start up too slowly and she has an attribute disadvantage against one of the top three most common units (Fullbring Ichigo - if you get into the game start hating him now).

>>2011149
Yes, Lieutenants are essentially meant to be Captains-in-training. Rangiku's position is a political one however, and at the moment the Central 46 still would have issues in promoting ANOTHER Shiba to Captain.

The main result of treating numbered kido as a PROGRESSION is that it's a new point of merit for promotion: no more seats being jointly held between ten or more people. The average seated officer may end up more skilled not just in absolute terms, but because the bar would be raised on getting those seats in the first place.

Monsters called youma roam the land. Virtually undistinguishable from human until they strike and morph in aberrations. Silver haired and eyed women from an organization hunt them down for money wielders the eponymous claymores. The story follows the saga of Claire the then weakest of the current generation of claymores in her travels and through intrigue.

Avoid the spoilers unless wanna read
Claymores are orphaned girls with surgically implanted youma bits in them to let them sense them and give them powers beyond human ability using their energy. If a claymore overdraws they start to awaken which turns them into the claymore equivalent of a youma, which are all fucking cannibalistic and strong as fuck, called Awoken beings. The organization actually wants this because they are a sciebnce branch of a kingdom of the mainland(the entire island is there to use as the please) trying to create a stable and not insane and controllable super solider to fight a war against the Asarakarum, creatures that can morph into Descendants of dragons, similar to awakening in claymores. Infact Youma are parasities that get into normal people, made by the organization from mixing the flesh of a captured Asakarum and a captured descendant.

Her brother got youma infected, ate her family and traveled around with her as a rape slave.

Then Theresa of the FAint smile (super overpowered claymore) saved her and killed the youma, but the local village refused to take her in. so she followed the pretty lady witht eh silver hair who saved her

Therese rejects her and sicne Claymores are forbidden to kill or harm humans she tkes icnresingly harsh paths to get the girl to go away. Claire keeps following until she nearly dies doing so.

Theresa can't leave her so she basically takes her in with intention to leave her at next village.

Bandits bother her and more or would have raped Theresa due to not harming humans clause until the saw the fact she basically ahs a never healing vivisection scar due to being implanted with youma bits that all Claymores have.

Theresa drops Claire off at a village she killed a bunch of youma for. Claire is heartbroken

Bandits move in after youma are gone kill a bunch of people and rape Claire. Theresa realizes this returns and slaughters them in short order. breaking the rules and getting her hunted.

Theresa gets confronted by the top 4 other claymroes. Beats them all easily. Even the promising new girl Priscilla can't compete. Priscilla overclocks herself to early awakening but Theresa still hands her her ass at a mere 10% (first time you've ever seen Theresa go that far). Prisclla says she can't stop her awakening so begs for a clean death. Then sneak attacks Theresa and kills her. Then awakens fully and kills the other claymores but ignores Claire.

Claire takes Theresa's head to the man in black who collects payments for the Organization. She asks to be made claymore.

They do so using the flesh from Theresa's head.

Claire is now the weakest Claymore in terms of raw energy and is shat on by all her contemporaries.
All this happens before the start of the series.

Well willfully murdering humans (and eating them) is a sign of a claymore about to awaken. It's a don't push your luck thing. Also the organization routinely kills off Claymores if they get too old (hence stronger and wiser than they can safely control) or appear to be too willfully or curious.

They usually do this by arranging a suicide mission for them.

You decide that if your concern is over the tension between your hollow heritage and your hard-won “humanity”, there's another perspective that you should consider: the perspective of an actual human. Luckily for you the Ninth Division has a couple of those handy right at this moment. And so you make your way towards the inner courtyard, where you find Kurosaki Ichigo and Arisawa Tatsuki seemingly in the process of training while Third Seat Kuchiki rests.

“Come on, I know you've got better moves than that,” Arisawa chides her friend as a punch fails to connect.

“I'm outta practice,” Kurosaki admits with a furtive glance away from his sparring partner. “All this shinigami stuff's been a distraction.”

You clear your throat loudly. “Scuse me.”

“Yeah, what's up?” Arisawa asks, noticing you over Kurosaki's shoulder.

“I wanted to ask Kurosaki something,” you admit, turning your focus to the young human. “Your experience is... well, it's something I wanna make use of, I guess.”

“How so?” Kurosaki asks suspiciously.

“Nothing bad,” you assure him. “You have hollow powers and shinigami powers, like I do. How do you... how do you feel about your hollow powers?”

“Where's that coming from?” he asks in confusion.

“Just answer the damn question,” you sigh.

“Well, when you put it that way,” Ichigo takes a cautionary tone.

“So what's the problem?” Arisawa asks, sparing Kurosaki a stern glance.

“I've been trying to be less like a hollow for longer than you two have been alive,” you explain, before quickly amending your statement. “Put together.”

“And?” Kurosaki presses.

“I've learned a way to get stronger, strong enough to protect what's important to me.”

“And?” Kurosaki repeats. Jerk.
>1/2
>>
>>2013683
“It means going backwards,” you explain. “It means getting even closer to being a hollow again, to being less like a human.”

Kurosaki is quiet for a few moments. “If you don't want to use it, then don't. Stick to your convictions and if you're not strong enough on your own, you have people to rely on.”

“What, like you?” Arisawa scoffs. “Look at it this way, if you want to protect someone then do it. It's your motivation, your reason for fighting, that makes you who you are... so long as you don't lose sight of it.”

Lovely... two conflicting answers. Though maybe that's just in the nature of “humanity”... maybe you were never going to get one single, coherent answer.

… it's time.

You excuse yourself, leaving the human children to their training, and seek out the familiar reiatsu of your little group's linchpin. You find her sitting quietly under a small maple tree.

“I've given it some thought,” you begin.

“Yes?” Riku replies calmly.

“And I had my doubts about becoming more like a hollow again, even it it's for the best possible reasons.”

Riku remains silent, so you keep talking.

“I thought being a hollow was a curse,” you continue, “and that the whole point of this was to escape that curse... but now the way I'm supposed to get stronger is to embrace it?”

“I just... I'm not sure what I should do, Riku. I've asked your brat nephew and his girlfriend, I've asked Starrk, and nothing they've told me makes the decision any easier!”

“So what...”

Riku stands, looks you in the eye, and headbutts you. The blow staggers you for a moment, then you feel a sudden surge of indignation.

“The hell was that for?”

Just as suddenly, you find yourself in a warm embrace.

“Don't be an idiot,” Lady Riku tells you in a firm tone. “I wouldn't have helped you become an arrancar in the first place if I didn't trust your judgment. Do what you think you have to in order to protect what you hold dear, and I'll do what I must to support you.”

“That's absolute and unconditional, and it always will be."

After a few moments, you quietly return the embrace.

“Then let's do this.”

Well... desu Berserk is overrated as all hell, and I legitimately lost interest. Claymore on the other hand was concluded years ago and left plenty of room for someone like me to go back and "explore", with just enough framework in place to create a new region and populate it with a set number of "important" characters with clearly-defined and manageable abilities that all fit the setting. So for a QM it feels pretty much ideal.
I also find the Warriors particularly compelling as characters: powerful enough to change their little corner of the world for the better, but they live under the thumb of a shady Organization and are doomed to either die young or become monsters themselves. And sometimes, it's STILL not enough. They're like little temporary bubbles of noble in an otherwise grimdark world.

SSQ on Saturday, 10am.

Berserk is pointless because the deck is so heavy stacked against the heroes and things just keep getting worse and worse.

The protagonist is basically only still alive due to willpower, his power ups are killing him and so on...

Is depressing as hell. And too darn long you have famous tragedy books way shorter than Berserk.

I mean you can just read 1984 and besides insulting the protagonist for bring an idiot, get the same effect

>>

Eh, I'd say both series have equally crossed the line that separated grimdark from grimderp. At least Berserk had a lasting emotional impact, especially around the Eclipse arc. I never got that from Claymore.

Too bad Miura's update rate ruined the entire experience.
>>
>>2015478
Claymore's main problem for me was that I was never particularly invested in Clare's story. Though to be fair I could say the same about Ichigo: he literally disappears from the story for months at a time and the story doesn't suffer for it.

The Claymore anime adaptation suffered from anime-Raki on top of it: like Shinji without the robot, plot relevance, or development.
>>
>>2015510
At least Raki in the manga became plot relevant later, and used to Hilarious effect by Isley who batman gambitted Priscilla of all people perfectly.
>>
>>2015510
Also what's your take on awakened beings? The ones made by the organization are unquestionably monsters, but the fact Awakened beings lack the scar Claymores have, can look, act and mimic human functions totally and pass themselves off as one with no real issue makes e think they are the logical continuation of being a Claymore. Just most who attain it are utterly unready do so either by going to far to fast and going nutso like Priscilla, or were monsters already like Ophelia. Some of them when awakened never changed mentally at all(Theresa, Isley, several others whose names I forgot), and didn't seem to need to feed on humans, just had a craving for it, much like humans and candy.
>>
>>2015706
The stigmata disappears because an awakened being's body ceases to be human, and stops rejecting the implanted yoma tissue. iirc Theresa guessed that her 'awakening' was shaped by the way child-Clare idolized her, and since we never see any of the Ghosts fully awaken it's an unanswered question whether an awakened being can be "stable".
The way the "Dragon Faction" is described suggests that it IS possible, but the Organization clearly doesn't know the set of conditions that would lead to such an outcome and I don't recall seeing any of the Ghosts' stigmata which would show whether they'd begun to heal or fade at all.
>>
>>2015732
From a guess I think it has to do both with the experience and the readiness of person when the change happens.

Isley changed because he felt obligated to deal with his failed and fallen brothers, and lacked the power to do so as a Claymore. So he awakened. As a result he is much less bloodthirsty than most and remarkably well put together mentally. His form is monstrous as are some of his actions, but he was never intentionally cruel like many of the others we have seen. He likely only attacked en masse because he realized that the Organization wanted to keep the stalemate and with Priscilla walking about everyone was on borrowed time.

Theresa and Miata both awakened and kept control through love trust and respect. Miata only losing herself due to being mentally imbalanced and basically almost a wild animal.

Meanwhile those who awakened with ravening hate and rage are unhinged like Ophelia, Priscilla and others.

This is further confounded by the fact that several awakened beings decided to fight Priscilla/Cassandra rather than feast on the VERY vulnerable humans or simply flee at best speed. Even when the battle was noted to be hopeless for them they fought. Meaning awakened beings are not just rapist human eating battle maniacs, they just tend to be so. Which given the first generation of men were drawn from soldiers with fighting experience and the subsequent female generations were drawn from orphans with bad or worse histories probably plays a part in why awakened beings are so monstrous. This is doubly true when the Organization makes awakened beings by snatching a man up and torture surgerying him to make a monster.

It seems that positive emotions or at least not negative ones help keep a claymore awakening stable and sane. That said We really only ever get a look at the stigmata once with Claire, and she had had a lot of fuckery happen to her just prior too. However given the fact claymores basically need to accept they have Youma (or other claymore) in them to draw upon Yoki and execute special attacks that they stigmata would fade in time, which as borderline immortals Claymores have a lot of. After all they do get more powerful as they age which is why the organization tries to bump them off before they lose control of them.

King confirmed that yes all grills for Claymores.
>Will she be in lesbians again? Like always?
Given the only males are either relatively squishy humans who will not be able to keep up with foes past mid tier, or Awakened beings most of whom are monsters in every sense of the word. Looks like it's a strong possibility.

Basically yeah, friendship, love and trust/respect all work to make an awakened being much less evil and sane. The reason most of them are batshit evil are the circumstances of their awakening and their general crapsack life. If the organization was not so intent of suffering making better weapons they'd probably have figured all this shit out already.

You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and after waiting for her to come to terms with the path before her your old friend and comrade Emilou Apacci has finally made a momentous decision. She's decided to conclude her training towards gaining a second state of release, the only logical name for which seems to be “Segunda Etapa”. You probably have the Monk to thank for the name, because if you're honest with yourself that was most likely his doing.

And people still think you're the scary one.

“Very well, Apacci,” you smile, rising to your feet. “We can begin as soon as you are ready, though I'd prefer to fight out in the open.”

“What, I thought you liked gardening?” Apacci smirks, bobbing her head slightly to gesture at the tree behind you.

“These are old trees, I've put a lot of effort into them,” you admit, lightly patting the maple's trunk. “I could replace them, but the replacements would never be the same.”

“Who'd have guessed under it all you'd be such a sentimental softy?” she taunts you.

“Anyone who'd actually been paying attention over the last hundred years or so,” you shrug. “Not my fault you've never been the most observant.”

“That so?” she frowns. “Well I learned it by watching you.”

“Like I said,” you repeat, “clearly not paying attention.”

“Seppa!” you call out, slamming a palm against the ground and reducing the earth beneath Apacci's feet to soft, loose sand that throws her off balance. Tenkotsuki sweeps out of her sheath to take advantage of the moment of vulnerability, only for Apacci to fall backwards.

A defensive fall. She rolls back to her feet well clear of the area you'd turned to sand, and manages to draw her own zanpakuto to parry the next swing of your sword.

“That was a dirty trick!” she frowns as she pushes her blade against yours.

“It was,” you agree, sinking to one knee and allowing Cierva to slide along Tenkotsuki's edge and pass harmlessly over your head. “So what?”

A punch to Apacci's gut forces her back onto the defensive as you follow up with two quick slashes, one she manages to avoid and the other she parries.

“If you were fighting one of Aizen's arrancars,” you continue, “would you expect them to fight fair?”

“Guess you have a point,” she replies. “So if I start fighting for real, you're not gonna be pissed, right?”

“We'll have to sooner or later,” you admit. “That's the whole point.”

“Alright,” Apacci sighs. “Guess I should release my sword again for this.”

“Why were you even sealed anyway?” you ask. “I mean I figured you had a reason?”

“I took a nap before Lady Halibel went and found you,” she admits “slipped my mind.”

“Impale, Cierva!”

In a powerful swirl of reiatsu the upper half of Apacci's uniform disappears, replaced with a coat of short fur like a deer's that covers most of her body. This time however her hakama remain... interesting.

“Decided to keep your pants on this time?” you muse. “Don't tell me you've gone all modest on me all of a sudden.”

“It's odd,” she admits, “but then again having your clothes disappear in the first place is kinda weird too if you think about it.”

“Fair.”

“Shunkō!” you shout, releasing your zanpakuto at the same time.

With a single step you slide behind Apacci, sword raised above your head, only to find that she's prepared for an immediate strike. She releases a pulse of hardened reiatsu that pushes you back and hurts your eyes, and in that moment of near-blindness lands a shallow slash across your side with the hook of her deer horn knife.

“Good shot,” you compliment her with a grunt as you kick low at her hip, which she has to use sonido to avoid. “But you lost your hierro, didn't you?”

“Yeah,” she admits quietly. “Good catch. So what d'ya think?”

“Risky,” you tell her. “Unless you follow it with a more effective offensive technique than a simple slash. But I think you're onto something.”

“Thanks,” she nods.

“For what?”

“For allowing my hierro to regenerate!” she shouts, dashing back in to re-engage. You grab her by one wrist and block the other strike with your foot, then bring Tenkotsuki down towards her head.

“Bala!”

Your blade is met with a blast of reiatsu, and you lose your momentum. In fact the multiple blasts push you back into the air where you finally land on your feet singed and smoldering.

“So you saw that coming too,” you sigh. “You really are getting comfy in fighting like this.”

“A little, yeah,” Apacci admits. “Though you're not fighting all-out, are you?”

“I can't,” you remind her. “Not against you.”

“But I can do this!”

You extend your fingers and hear the sound of Tenkotsuki chanting in your mind. “Rikujōkōrō!”

Six flat beams of kidō slam into Apacci's gut, knocking the air out of her lungs. Her eyes go even wider as you instantly follow through with a powerful charging flat thrust... this will hurt her like hell, but it allows you to pick a target precisely so that it won't be fatal. She strains against her binds, then roars as she releases her reiatsu again. The force of the blast shatters your kidō, but just too late for her to avoid your blade entirely. She does however turn her waist but the wrong way, allowing you to bend your wrist and swing your arm to slash at her side as she dodges. Your blade cuts deep and draws her blood, her side totally unprotected.

However, touching your fingertips to your right cheek reveals that you're not entirely unscathed.

Apacci is panting heavily, clutching her wounded side as you return your blade to a neutral, readied stance.

“That fucking hurt,” Apacci pants as the bleeding apparently slows.

“But you're basically holding your own,” you point out. “I feel like you've grown. I'm proud.”

“Thanks,” Apacci nods. “Again.”

This time Apacci takes the offensive, pinning you down with a barrage of balas from her horns and lashing at you with both her knives. You let her hit an afterimage, using utsusemi to get behind her and aim a spinning kick at the back of her neck that meets a powerful barrier made from cero.

You take a shallow cut across your ankle before you can recover.

“The back of the neck? Really?”

In recovering you harness your momentum, kicking at her face but meeting the back of her wrist. She grunts, taking a step back as your assault continues with a series of punches and slashes. Then, as she tries to take your back, you spring your trap.

Yanking hard on a kidō chain you wrapped around her ankle while she was distracted by Tenkotsuki's edge, you take her right off her feet and pull her in front of you where a straight right kick sends her flying. When the dust clears and she rises to her feet, she's cradling her left wrist.

“Danmaku Tenyō!” you declare in a loud voice, handing the spell off to Tenkotsuki to manage while you renew your assault on Apacci. Your swings come with a speed and efficiency that comes from nearly two centuries of constant refinement, mixed in with sporadic blows with your hands and feet that keep the poor arrancar off her guard. She has to keep track of your body position to estimate where the next blow could come from, always alert for the possibility of a feint, and to her credit she keeps up.

Until you unexpectedly crack her across the chin with your sheath.

“Damn,” she grunts as the moment of weakness gives Tenkotsuki an avenue to slam a ball of kidō into her back, which in turn leaves her open to a spinning kick to her side that she only just manages to block. “I forgot what a pain in the ass you can be...”

“You think this is a pain in the ass?” you smirk. “Get on my level.”

Three simultaneous bala detonate early thanks to your danmaku, which leaves an opening for Apacci to rally back. She's given up sweeping strikes with her deer horn knives, instead punching at you with them like they're sharp gloves on a fuzzy boxer. Honestly you're a little proud... against your wider attacks, the quick and direct jabs she's favoring now are absolutely the correct response.

She even bruises your knee pretty badly with a kick from her hooved foot.

But it's getting time for you to step this up another notch, proud though you may be of her progress so far and the simple tenacity she's shown so far in the fight.

“Daichi Tenyō.”

With a great rumble chunks of earth and rock rend themselves from the ground, adding a daunting amount of debris to the swirling chaos already in place. Apacci seems overwhelmed, completely unable to keep track of it all, and so instead she looks at you.

Which is what you expected.

You shatter a chunk of rock about the size of your head in front of her with a kidō ball, forcing her to glance away and leaving her open to a kick to the ribs. By the time she's recovered all she ends up hitting is another rock, while a ball of kidō strikes her square in the back. She chases down your reiatsu only to shatter another rock as you avoid her blow, sliding behind one of the fragments and kicking it at her.

She pushes the chunk of stone out of the way only to find you've moved, forcing her to parry behind her back to stop your slash which leaves her exposed to take a kidō blast to the gut.

Like this you wear her down, bit by bit, until her movements grow sluggish and you begin to run low on rocks and kidō projectiles to pelt her with and take cover behind. Which is when you get in close, sheathing Tenkotsuki at your waist.

She looks at you in shock and confusion, before taking a blow to the face. Its speed catches her by surprise, she hadn't thought you could still move that quickly after tiring her out to such a degree... and to be honest were it not for the fact that you released shunkō a few moments ago she might have been right.

The first blow is followed by another, which she blocks with her elbow, but the third blow connects with her ribs. You rain punches down on her one after the other, leaving her no time between them to do anything but hold her guard up. Even despite that a few blows get through to her face and ribs, then a few more slip past her guard as it wavers. With every renewed flurry more punches connect, her guard begins to drop, until she's practically defenseless.

Her eyes look unfocused. It's hard to keep this up, even if each punch does little to harm her their cumulative effect has sapped her of most of her strength. Even though she's still standing she looks totally defeated.

Seeing her like this... it's just as personal as seeing Halibel's expression before she disappeared within your Kurohitsugi, if not even more so.

Your eyes sting. The punch you just threw stops short.

This hurts riku too, i know.
But she can't forget, this is for apacci's sake too. This is what she wants, and we're doing it for her.
We can't stop now, we'd be letter her down, and all of this will have been pointless.

You know...I think all of these have the potential to push Apacci over the edge.

Riku admitting she can't keep hurting Apacci, meaning Apacci has pushed Riku to her emotional limit. For nothing.

Telling Apacci to give up, that Riku feels she's done all she can to bring Apacci over the edge and it's not enough. Apacci isn't enough.

And then putting Apacci's life on the line.

Fuck this music really makes this scene hurt.

>"I can't do this anymore."

Cause last punch is probably gonna win, but I still kinda want to see the transformation come from something besides imminent demise.

Even that's the more reliable shounen answer.

You blink, feeling a wetness on your cheeks as you remember your own words... that you'd support Apacci in her decision, unconditionally and to the full extent of your ability. And so you force yourself to pull your arm back, building reiatsu there. A punch powerful enough to kill most shinigami on impact, and enough to put Apacci's lights out. You don't intend to hit her with it, not when she's in this sort of condition... but you can't let her know that.

“This blow will hurt you badly if it connects,” you tell her, struggling to keep your voice steady. “Please ensure that it doesn't... I'm placing my faith in you, Apacci.”

“Don't. Let. This. Hit.”

Then you throw the punch.

Apacci doesn't move.

You can feel your own reiatsu against hers, and she still doesn't move... you're not sure you can stop so late through the punch, but you can still hold some of the power back.

Your knuckles actually touch her chest, you can feel what's left of her hierro shattering... then nothing.

A deep gash appears on your left bicep, and the world explodes.

“Marveous,” you mutter, clutching at your blood-soaked shoulder and gazing at Apacci's new form.

Just like with Halibel it seems this Segunda Etapa doesn't change much, at least in terms of appearances. The fur which covers most of her body has gone white instead of rusty brown, and the number of points on her horns has roughly doubled. The mask fragment which previously graced the top of her forehead now extends to the back of her head, leaving long black hair streaming out from the back, and covers her eyes and nose like a visor. It greatly resembles her mask from when she was still a menos... another interesting commonality.

Then there are her legs.

From the knee down it looks almost like her kneecaps are reversed, but instead you reason that they're simply bowed from the knee down to the top of her hooves. Somehow, you reason, this configuration allows her to build a phenomenal amount of power there for an instant burst of speed, so fast that even you had a hard time keeping track of her movement when she slashed you. Not quite at the level of you or Yoruichi, and not like Sui Fēng either... but then again it's still enough to place her in a different league from her fellow Tres.

“Thank you,” she tells you, and you can see under her mask that she's smiling.

Her hold on her weapons loosens as you hold onto her, and you hear them hit the ground. No words are required, it must be obvious to her what you're feeling. You can feel her returning your embrace, weapons forgotten where they fell. Eventually you find a moment to speak your mind.

“So how are you feeling?” you ask, taking a step back.

Apacci glances down at her hands, testing the strength of her fingers, then places a hand against her chest.

“Still human.”

“See?” you reply. “You should trust yourself more, Apacci.”

“If you hadn't said what you did I don't know if I'd have managed,” she admits quietly. “That's twice I owe you now.”

“You don't owe me shit,” you sigh. “Though I do wanna see more of what this new form of yours can do. Think you're up to it?”

“I'm tired,” Apacci admits, “but I have a little left in me.”

“I hope you have enough energy left for your ceros,” you challenge her as she retrieves her knives and you draw both your swords, only one of which you have released. “Let's go.”

“Alright, let me try this...” she frowns, as if she's focusing on something. Then, something happens that even surprises you. A crimson orb of spinning reiatsu manifests to Apacci's side, then begins to compress.

“She is charging a cero away from her body?” Tenkotsuki realizes.

Wait... is that even possible? The powerful beam of raw spiritual energy confirms it, in this form it seems Apacci can charge and fire ceros from thin air... no, from the thin, wispy corona of reiatsu that surrounds her body for several feet in any direction.

You slice the cero in two with Tenkotsuki's edge only to find three more bala behind it, which you slice with a sequence of strokes of your blades. More powerful blasts form in the air around Apacci before streaking towards you, some of which you dodge and some of which you manage to slice apart. A few bounce off the ground and come at you from unusual angles, or miss and bounce off objects behind you.

The pace is insane, though you manage to push forward despite the intensity of the barrage.

“Gotcha!” you shout, striking from the left at her ribs and the right at the base of her neck. She parries those with her knives, then matches a series of high kicks you launch as your blades are locked. Then she charges a cero at the tip of the single horn on her forehead.

You release your hold on your kodachi, letting the force Apacci had been exerting against them spin them in place where you grab them in a reverse grip that lets you slash at the cero before she finishes charging it. Your second strike finds only air as she moves out of the way, and you follow through with a slow spin of your body to slash away a new barrage of bala from behind you.

Your blades clash again, this time both in the center of the space between you, and Apacci charges a ring of ceros around you before firing them inwards towards you. The beams weave a net like an American dream catcher, but you manage to disengage only to find Apacci pushing the net in your direction.

“Hadō 63: Raikōhō!”

Your own hadō strikes like lightning from your two fingertips, which you unwrap from around your hilt for the task. It strikes true, and detonates the ceros... but even so quick, having abandoned the incantation altogether for speed, it's not enough. The resulting blast engulfs you, tumbling you across the ground and slamming the back of your head through the outer wall of your Division's grounds.

You see stars as you struggle to your knee... that was a powerful blow.

Beyond the crumbling section of wall you see Apacci standing calmly, fists raised as if expecting an immediate counterattack.

“Magnificent...” you mutter to yourself as you find your balance once more. “Truly magnificent, Apacci...”

You ready your two swords, and begin walking towards your opponent. It must make for quite a sight, since Apacci slides one foot back and lowers her stance in response. “For the first time in a long time... there's someone I really wanna beat!”

With a cry, you unleash raw divine power that tears through your body like a cyclone, your voice ringing in your ears with an unusual, commanding presence. “Bankai: Akirashi Shunkō!”

Apacci's eyes widen as she generates dozens of ceros and bala around herself and flings them at you, charging right in behind them herself. But your swords tear through the blasts with ease, arcs of power like living lightning cancel the rest almost independent of your will.

Tenkotsuki leads in a flat thrust, which Apacci raises her own knife to parry... only to find Kobara no Tachi's spine pressed against the back of one of its hooks. You pivot in place, pulling her forward by her own weapon and sliding way into her fighting space where you drive your elbow into her gut.

She wavers, stepping back as you reverse your grip on Tenkotsuki's hilt and thrust behind you. Finding nothing there you swing Kobara no Tachi and turn back to your left as its edge slides against Apacci's other knife. Tenkotsuki's hilt slams into the ribs under her right armpit, though when you try and sweep her leading leg she manages to avoid you in spite of the splitting pain she must be feeling in her chest.

Several exchanges prove fruitless for either of you, sending sparks flying as steel clashes again and again and leaving bruises where your blunt strikes land, but you feel yourself taking the upper hand. After what feels like an eternity you finally manage to take her feet out from under her, which gives you the opening you were looking for.

“Shitotsu Sansen!” you shout, slamming three fangs of golden light into her shoulders and gut, pinning her arms just long enough for you to cross your blades and bring them together on either side of Apacci's neck.

Two tiny rivulets of blood mark where they've ignored her hierro entirely, only just nicking her skin.

The bakudō eventually breaks, and she lowers her knives to her sides. You do the same, withdrawing your swords from her throat.

“You did well, Apacci,” you sigh, finally allowing yourself to feel relief. “Really well... I'm proud.”

Without saying a single word, Apacci kneels and bows her head.

Tia's Segunda they might understand, but the quick succession of events with Apacci getting a Segunda might be too much for the duo to take within such a short timeframe. . I wouldn't be surprised if they developed a grudge despite their hollow instincts to follow strength. Clearly, they value their meaning in protecting Tia and wanted to get stronger to do so. But with their Reiatsu level capped at Lt. rank, and the only ones who haven't made a significant breakthrough since getting a Ressurecion, I'm just stumped on finding options to help their confidence and power. I feel bad for them. The two never really took the initiative in getting themselves familiar with Riku, and now they're paying for it at such a late stage.

Halloween... the night of all souls. Some form of the holiday has always been celebrated in the Soul Society since even before the founding of the Seireitei, though adoption of its modern form is a relatively new thing. The Second, Third, and Ninth Divisions have made it a point over the last ten years or so to distribute konpeitō candies through their seated officers and their families, ensuring that a respectable supply was available through at least the inner half of the Rukongai for children to collect house-to-house. Some shinigami have even reported seeing them in the hands of children as far out as the mid-70's, proving that there is some semblance of good will to be found far beyond the reach of Seireitei's logistical capabilities.

Within Seireitei itself the celebrations are particularly involved these days, with carved jack-o'lanterns sitting on many of the walls and candles lighting the alleyways, and each Division holding its own festivities. Sometimes the top seated officers of each Division even visit their neighbors, exchanging gifts... Ichimaru's dried summer fruits are especially prized.

And the costumes, of course, can be... outlandish.

“No,” Yoruichi sighs, “you can't be the 'Queen of Hell' this year, Riku.”

“Why not?” Riku demands, resting her hands on her hips with a frown.

“Because that's not a costume,” Yoruichi sighs. “That's actually a thing you were, remember?”

“Yeah, and it was exciting!” Riku protests.

“I don't think Hell would understand the joke either,” Yoruichi points out. “And I'm not letting you go back there for it.”

“Well then, what's your idea?” Riku asks, crossing her arms. “We already did Frankenstein's monster and the Bride of Frankenstein last year.”

“Damn,” Yoruichi mutters. “I was hoping you'd forgotten that.”

“I mean sure, you looked fantastic in that dress...” Riku allows, seeming to reconsider her position. “No, no... has to be something new this year.”

Little did either Captain know that this Halloween was going to be... exceptional. So when the phone on Riku's desk rings, she answers it with a smile that slowly fades. “Calm down, you're not making sense. What do you mean 'disappeared', officer? You don't say... secure the scene, I'll be there within the hour with forensics.”

“What's up?” Yoruichi enquires.

“Patrol in Karakura town found something,” Riku explains. “Some humans were attacked and their souls devoured... but not by hollows.”

“I mean, we could do Jedi,” Yoruichi suggests as the two Captains stand at the entrance to an alleyway, watching the Ninth Division forensics team at work.

“That sounds like it could work,” Riku admits. “But who would be who?”

“Well, I'd clearly be Liam Neeson,” Yoruichi clarifies, “making you my padawan learner.”

“That makes sense,” Riku nods in agreement. “Though a lot of people in the Seireitei are gonna be doing Jedi this year...”

“Fair,” Yoruichi sighs. “Still think we could do it best though.”

“So what have you found?” Riku asks as one of the technician approaches the duo.

“It's a mess, ma'am,” the man reports with a grim expression.

“I can see that,” Riku nods, glancing over his shoulder. “Must've been a special kind of sadist.”

“Quite,” the technician agrees. “It appears that these two people were cut numerous times, deliberately targeting areas with large bundles of nerves but that wouldn't be fatal.”

“They were tortured,” Yoruichi summarizes. “To try and ensure the plusses would linger after death. But was that really necessary?”

Ruined fingertips, bleeding gums... and metal pipes impaled through the victim's bodies. It's almost like...

“What happened to their blood?” Riku asks. “Why is there so little at the scene?”

“It appears to have been drained.”

Riku exchanges a knowing glance with her partner. “Thank you for your efforts. Please return to HQ with your reishi samples. I want to give Captain Urahara enough of an idea what to look for that we can detect these bastards next time they show up.”

“Are you thinking what I'm thinking?” Yoruichi asks.

“Yeah,” Riku nods in implicit agreement, taking out her phone. “Hey, Kisuke... get me a few crucifixes, some garlic cloves, and a few dozen sharpened aspen stakes. Have them delivered to the shop. Why? We're having a stake-out, of course.”

Halloween night fell upon Karakura town. After word of the murders spread many parents refused to let their children out of sight, though a few intrepid high school students still managed to cover a house or two in toilet paper. But it was two Captains of the Seireitei that found the true mischief-makers with the help of Urahara Kisuke, who traced all but one of them to a large estate on the edge of town.

“Think this is the place?” Riku asks, now dressed in the outfit of a Victorian-era man.

Yoruichi, similarly dressed, nods in agreement. “Might as well have written 'VAMPIRE COVEN' on the gate in capital letters.”

“Seems we've been detected,” Riku grins as something approaches the front gate. “This should be fun.”

“This is private property,” the well-dressed, goateed man frowns. “I'll have to ask you two ladies to leave.”

“And I'm afraid we can't comply,” Yoruichi counters. “Tell me, are you familiar with the two killings that occurred in Karakura town this morning? The victims were drained of all their blood and left impaled on metal spikes.”

“Is that an accusation?” the man asks, a smirk creeping across his face.

“It's a declaration of war,” Riku replies, drawing a sharpened wooden stake from her coat. “I've never gotten to kill a vampire before. I wonder, if I stake you through the heart will you burst into flames, or merely disintegrate into dust?”

“Who knows?” the man muses, pulling a gold pocketwatch from his vest pocket and spinning it by the chain. “Zeige dich, Fried!”

The watch elongates, and takes on a serpentine form which coils around the man's neck and shoulders. Its eyes glint like jewels and it speaks with a hissing lisp. “What issss thissss?”

“Home delivery,” the man explains. “My apologies, Captain, but I fear I won't be able to answer your question.”

“Hey wait, you're not a vampire...” Riku realizes, sounding almost disappointed. “What are you, really?”

“Are you a quincy, or something?”

“Were you at least the one who killed those people?” Yoruichi asks.

“To that, I can freely admit.”

“Then if you're not a vampire, why the theatrics?” Riku demands.

“Precisely that,” the man replies. “Theatrics. It is Halloween night, after all.”

With a crash the mansion's doors burst open, and something rolls across the floor trailing red stains. When it comes to a stop it becomes apparent that it's a body, a crucifix tied tight across the forehead with its silver chain, a head of garlic shoved in its mouth, and a wooden stake through its heart.

“Ryō!?” an old man exclaims as the body crumbles away into dust. “What in god's name is this!?”

Theatricality,” Riku spits, a soundless hirenkyaku having carried her far into the house where she's perched atop an antique piano.

“So these are the creatures who defeated my...” a man with round glasses exclaims before being interrupted.

Silence!” Riku roars angrily. “One more word out of you and you die on the spot, monster.”

“Monster?” a large-bodied man with a vivid mohawk mutters to himself. “Only because we have been made so.”

“The decision to take a human life isn't one that's forced upon you,” Yoruichi comments from the banister rail. “That is your choice, and in the end you are the one who must be held responsible for it.”

“That's what I've been saying Kariya!” a younger-looking man with blonde hair that covers one of his eyes interjects. “It's against the laws of our tribe and you know it! That law is right!”

“To which tribe are you referring, Mabashi?” the old man inquires bitterly. “Our laws hardly matter if no one is left to observe them. When faced with extinction any alternative is preferable.”

“And you think I'm not your 'extinction', old man?” Riku hisses. “Don't make me laugh. Not one of you is strong enough to challenge one of us... flee now and disappear and we won't pursue you. Stay and meet your death. Those are your only choices.”

“Now then, make your decision.”

“You chose poorly.”

The large-framed man kneels, stunned, staring empty-eyed at the chunks of metal in front of him. “Dalk was defeated so easily... did we ever stand a chance?”

The blonde man with the bangs hasn't moved, simply staring in wide-eyed horror at the battle as it unfolded. The twins were frozen solid by Captain Shihōin's Hyōga Seiran, who stopped hesitating after she realized they were only playing the part of children and were likely even older than she is. The old man was split from crotch to skull by Captain Kusajishi's blade, burning the two halves away as if her rage itself had set a flame in his flesh. Nobody saw the glasses prick die, since the Captains had banished his shadow-based Doll in a powerful flash of light and used the distraction to cut him into bloody chunks. The final bloodthirsty victim nearly landed a blow on Yoruichi's shoulder with her weapon before being cut down... nearly here being the key word.

“I have no desire to commit genocide today,” Riku declares. “Choose to live as humans and I can make certain arrangements on your behalf. Choose to continue living as monsters, who murder humans and eat their souls, and you've already seen what will happen.”

“This is your third and final chance. Don't waste it.”

“How dare you declare us monsters?” the last of the creatures still on his feet demands. “From my perspective, the shinigami who would execute living humans so coldly are the true monsters.”

“When you stop eating souls,” Yoruichi sighs, “then you get to have an opinion, bount.”

“So you know of us?” the silver-haired man, who Mabashi had called Kariya, muses. “Then I assume you know how we came to be? How we were hunted by shinigami and quincy alike?”

“And then you were left alone,” Yoruichi counters, “because attitudes began to shift. Even shinigami are not truly immortal... the ones who ordered your extermination are long dead.”

“Even the Head Captain?” the mohawked man asks, staring intently at the remains of his Doll.

“Even him,” Riku confirms. “Burned himself nearly to ashes... even if we could revive him, recovery seems out of the question.”

“That's good,” Kariya nods. “It'll save me the trouble of killing him myself.”

“Zeige dich...” he begins, raising a small silver amulet in his right arm... only for that arm to disappear.

Red stains bloom across his shirt from the wooden stake protruding from his chest. “I didn't... see her...”

There's a loud thud when he hits the floor, as the afterimage of Riku sitting on the piano fades.

“So,” she asks, watching as the body crumbles to dust like the rest. “Will the two of you follow his example? Or will you choose life?”

In the center of Karakura town, a sharply-dressed brunette takes what appears to be a wrong turn down an alleyway. She eventually stops, once she's well out of the view of any passersby on the main street.

“Show yourselves.”

“This one has decent senses, at least,” Yoruichi comments as she steps out of the shadows. “You must be Yoshino, correct?”

“How do you know my name?” the woman demands, raising her arm. On one finger is a claw-like ring that extends over her fingertip, connected by gold chains to a bracelet around her wrist.

“Easy, now,” Riku assures her with hands held in the open. “We haven't tracked you down to kill you... at least, we hope.”

“You hope?” Yoshino repeats, eyes narrowing.

“It all depends on how reasonable you are about it,” Yoruichi explains.

“See,” Riku adds, “we don't think it's ridiculous to ask that you people not murder humans and eat their souls, and refusing such a request... well, we tend not to respond very well to it.”

“So is that what happened at the Kariya mansion?” Yoshino demands.

“That, and they attacked us,” Riku sighs. “The last one even declared his intentions to attack the Seireitei, forget about getting him to stop eating people. What are we supposed to do with such a person?”

“We tried poking out their spiritual pressure points with wooden stakes,” Yoruichi mutters, “but that just caused them to crumble to dust. We realized that there's no way to cripple a bount and spare their lives.”

“So you killed them all...”

“Not all of them,” Riku sighs. “Two of them were sensible enough to take our generous offer...”

“And what was that offer?” Yoshino demands angrily. “Speak quickly or spare me the aggravation!”

“Calm down,” Yoruichi insists. “We offered to supply them with reishi pills to take the place of human lives, and that we'd leave them alone otherwise so long as they never attacked a human soul again.”

Yoshino is clearly stunned for a moment. “And they turned that down!?”

“Like I said, not all of them,” Riku reiterates. “Mabashi and Koga agreed to our terms, though Koga seemed loyal to their leader at first. He took some... convincing. I take it by your tone you won't?”

“So this is the deal,” Riku explains one last time for clarity. “Once a month you are free to return here, where Tessai will supply you each with a reishi pill. Aside from this you won't be bothered by shinigami again, except if you eat a human.”

“What happens then?” Mabashi asks, staring at the pill in his hand.

“Then I come back and personally take what I've allowed you to keep,” she says with a sharp glare. “It's in your best interests to ensure that doesn't happen.”

“And you expect us to forget what you did?” Koga presses. “To forget the blood of our people on your hands?”

“I'm not sorry for what we did,” Riku counters, turning her glare towards the much larger man. “By threatening the souls of the living that leader of yours made it necessary, forced our hand. But I am sorry it came to that.”

“Goodbye... and I hope you understand that I'd rather not see any of you again.”

“The feeling is mutual,” Koga grumbles, already halfway out the door.

Mabashi leaves a little more slowly, pausing before he leaves the room. “You weren't wrong. Koga will see it that way in time.”

“Would it be unusual to thank you?” Yoshino muses, still yet to leave her spot seated on the floor.

“For what?” Yoruichi asks.

“Koga told me a little about what the others were planning,” she explains. “Of all the bount, I'm the only one who can have children... Kariya was once my husband, so he knows that about me. He planned to use my soul as part of his plot.”

Riku frowns at the woman. “How so?”

“As part of a weapon to harvest and purify living souls,” Yoshino clarifies. “Koga didn't know how it worked, apparently it was Ugaki's invention.”

“Then you have no need to thank us,” Riku sighs. “Sounds like it would've been a real problem for us if they'd managed to follow through on that plan.”

“All the same, thank you,” Yoshino reiterates, before leaving as well.

“So...” Yoruichi sighs, drawing her wife's attention. “I heard Gin's holding a Halloween party. We might not be too late.”

“Yeah,” Riku nods quietly. “I could use a drink.”

It's pretty good, one of the increasingly-rare images that makes sifting through all the futa/inflation/etc on Pixiv not seem like a complete waste of my time.
Go all-in on TYBW and not a single 5*.
It's... it's not like I wanted to play PvP anyway!
>>
>>2027982
I just spam refresh until I get weak teams ton fight or x2 point groups since I have 23 million gold after all the anniversaries and download milestones.
>>
>>2027984
4th seat and higher are flooded with TYBW. Half the teams are Toshiro-leads and I literally have no way to reliably counter them. Best I can do is lead with HW Yoruichi and hope the first attack inflicts status.
>>
>>2027990
It's really that bad? I've been working my way up from 10th Seat after I gave up playing for months.

Do you have a Speed character you could pump defense on that could hit him first? IIRC Final Getsuga Tensho Ichigo has pretty fast strong attacks. It's been a long time since I actually used him though.

Also
>RIP Soi Fon dream
It's like getting Speed Yoruichi right as everyone and their mothers started using Fullbring Ichigo.

I swear to God clover if you make this a huge block of text...

Amazing how fast filler arcs can be dealt with when you send in the heavy hitters right away.
>>
>>2028033
Just tell the "heavy hitters" that they get to fight something cool, like "actual vampires". Then wait for them to run off and be disappoint.

GENIUS!

>>2027991
The problem is that all the TYBW characters are stupidly fast and powerful, but Hitsugay is a special case. There's literally no reliable answer to him, and the only reason NOT to run him is that you don't have him. So most of the teams that were RGB running some random Red unit just dropped their red for Hitsugay, and now they're even MORE dominant.
I was trying to use blue Halibel, but she's far too slow to hit anything. She just spawns in and dies. It's a fucking joke.

As it turns out, Hitsugaya had the same power as Ichigo all along: Being beaten up powers him up, the boost being proportionate to how severe his injures are.
However, unlike Ichigo, Hitsugaya did not have the ability fully awakened, meaning that while he could still absorb power from his injures, he couldn’t actually use it.
As a result, all the jobbing that Hitsugaya has been doing throughout Bleach has been building up his power for the day he would be able to harness it, and that day has finally come.
>>
>>2028780
He's also not a shota. Look up Brave Souls Blood War Hitsugaya.
