You are the sixteenth Raidou Kuzunoha, Devil Summoner, protector of humanity, and now an agent of Japan's intelligence bureau, Naicho.

<Begin Arc 1: The School Shrouded In Darkness>

You're just getting back from lunch when Director Kaibara calls you into the briefing room.

You drop what you're doing- namely, paperwork to keep you busy- and head into the briefing room, with Gotou trailing behind you.

When you enter the room, Kaibara sits you down at a table with a slide projector on it, pointed at the wall. Once you've settled in, Kaibara turns on the projector, showing you a photo of a large building situated right next to a large forest.

"This is the Takamori High School, located in the town of Takamori in the Kumamoto prefecture. Typical school, typical students...until this morning. Around 10 AM, the townspeople reported seeing strange lights coming from the school. When someone went up to the school to the investigate, they came back screaming hysterically that the school was empty. Normally, we would've let the local police handle this, but something they found while searching the school caught the Yatagarasu's attention."

Kaibara clicks to the next slide, and you immediately understand: the second slide is a picture of an empty classroom. But that's not what catches your eye.

Someone- or something- cleared a large space in the middle of the room, pushing aside all the desks and chairs to the sides of the room. In the clearing are dozens of snakes, each of them biting their own tail, forming circles with their bodies.

"I'm no expert on animal behavior," remarks Gotou. "But that's clearly not natural."

"Right," says Kaibara. "So we're sending you in undercover as an investigator from the Criminal Affairs Bureau. Your mission is to look into the disappearance of the students and faculty of Takamori High, and bring them back if possible. This is going to be a test run for you as a Naicho agent, Kuzunoha- your performance on this mission will show if you're ready to handle missions abroad."

>"Understood."

"Understood." you say. "Oh, one more thing" says Kaibara. "The Yatagarasu says that bringing a katana on missions will raise too much suspicion. They'll be providing you with a combat knife to replace it."

That sounds...reasonable. It's a lot easier to conceal a knife than a katana. You prepare for your mission, grabbing 5 empty summoning tubes and the one that contains Koro.

It's a pretty long drive from Tokyo to Takamori- it's already 5 PM when you arrive at the scene of the investigation.

You step out of the car and see that there's a detective putting out a cigarette and talking with people you assume to be locals. There's also an unwatched door you could easily walk through and begin investigating on your own.

You approach the detective, getting a better look at them. A woman, shoulder-length black hair, wearing a black leather coat. She quickly hides her cigarette as she turns to you.

"May I help you?" she asks, her tone curt and all business. You hold out the badge that Naicho gave to you- a remarkably accurate fake. "Good afternoon, I'm Detective Kuzunoha, Criminal Affairs Bureau. Following introductions, could you explain what the situation here is, detective?"

"Detective Michiyo Kawasie. I'm certain you've been briefed on the reports of strange lights followed by the discovery of the school being abandoned. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to figure out where the faculty or the students went....if I didn't know any better, I'd say they were just whisked away."

You bite your tongue, trying not to make a clever remark. "May I take a look around?"

"We've covered every centimeter of the campus..." says Kawasie. "....But, it wouldn't hurt to have a fresh pair of eyes take another look."

Kawasie leads you inside the school, taking you through the halls of the main building.

"I heard there was something about snakes in the building." you say while you walk. "Yeah, that..." Kawasie says, suddenly sounding uneasy. "Creepiest thing I ever saw...one of the officers tried to get rid of them, but the first snake he got near lashed out and bit him. Had to send him to the hospital."

"From a snakebite?"

"Yeah," Kawasie says, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a cigarette and a lighter. "All the snakes we found were mamushis."

Mamushi? Those are venomous...even a fully grown man bitten by a mamushi could be in the hospital for a whole week....and on average, 10 people die from mamushi bites in Japan per year.

"Wait, I thought mamushi mainly lived in swamps or open woodlands." you say. "You'd be right, but either something attracted all these snakes here, or someone put these snakes here for who knows what reason." She lights up her cigarette. "Don't even ask me why they're looped up like that, I'm just as in the dark as you."

After inspecting the main building, you and Kawasie stop by the practice building, where all the extracurricular activities are normally held. Kawasie hastily puts out her cigarette.

"Sorry, did even realize I'd lit up." she says apologetically. "Sometimes I'll get stressed out and start a cigarette without even thinking about it."

>"I don't mind, I could even use a smoke myself."
>"It's alright."

"It's alright." you say, eyes scanning the horizon. As you look over by the soccer field, something grabs your eye. "Hm?"

You walk over to the item of interest and pick it up. It's a scrap of paper, with writing on it...

'Pakliol moiparran gadurm akula'....

You don't know what it means, but it's definitely occult. Kawasie looks over your shoulder. "What the hell is that?" she asks.

>"Some sort of ritual talisman. Maybe the students were playing at some ghost game?"

You don't find anything else.

You head to the bathroom and pull out your combat knife, poking the very tip of it into your thumb, drawing a small bead of blood. You smear it onto your ring....

And you immediately find yourself in a dark mirror of the school. Everything's dimmer, grayer....

...And bloodier?

You look around the Dark Realm version of the bathroom and see several bloodstains on the walls, floor....there's even one on the ceiling.

"This is....not normal." Gotou says warily.

>"What, you mean the Dark Realm ISN'T supposed to be covered in blood?"

"What, you mean the Dark Realm ISN'T supposed to be covered in blood?" you ask. You're only being half-sarcastic; this is your first time in the Dark Realm.

"No...this is bad." says Gotou.

As if on cue, you hear the sound of a girl scream. You instinctively begin running towards the sound.

You round a corner to see a 15-year old girl being cornered by a demon that's half-snake, half-man, and brandishing a shield in one hand and a curved sword in the other.

"Yesssss!" hisses the demon. "Tremble in fear! Your terror will make you all the more deliciousssss!"

You figure there's two ways you can do this- either charge him with Koro, risking a counter attack, or sneak up on the demon alone and stab it in the back.

You stab your combat knife into the demon's back. It screams, twisting its serpentine body to look at you.

"A ssssssummoner? I didn't realize they'd chossssen a new one." hisses the demon. It raises its weapon to you before you can summon Koro.

"Doessssn't matter, I can't have you interrupting my meal!" it says, lunging at you.

You step on the prone form of the demon, firing three more shots into it. The demon screams before dispersing into Magnetite particles. Now that you've disposed of the demon, you get a good look at the girl- short hair, plain high school uniform, frightened out of her mind.

"Wh-who are you?" she stammers.

"I'm the one who's gonna help you." you say. "What happened?"

"I-I don't know...I was in class and there was a flash of light...then we all found ourselves in this weird version of our school...and there were monsters everywhere....and oh God Yukino got eaten by that snakeman and it began chasing me!"

She begins sobbing hysterically. You can understand- for someone unaware of demonic activity, this would be extremely traumatic.

The girl seems to calm down. After a few deep breaths, she starts talking again. "I-I think I remember something...before the flash, one of the students in my homeroom went to the bathroom..."

"Anything suspicious about them?" you ask. The girl rubs her forehead, trying to think. "...They had a book tucked in their uniform's jacket. I didn't see a title, but it was thin, and looked like it had a black leather cover." she said. "Like I said before, I don't remember who it was...maybe if you can find someone else from 2-B, they can tell you more."

"So who's in 2-B?" you ask. She frowns. "I-I never really talked to the other students...Yuriko was pretty much my only friend..."

The girl stops, and then looks like she's having an epiphany. "Up on the second floor in room 3-E is where the Yearbook Club meets! If you get a yearbook, you'll have a list of everyone from 2-B, with their pictures, too!"

You sigh. It'd be easier to go back to the 'real' world to get the yearbooks...but then you'd be leaving the girl unprotected. But if you went to Room 3-E in the Dark Realm, you're going to face demons along the way...

>Go back to the 'real' world to get the yearbooks.
>Stay in the Dark Realm to get the yearbooks.

You decide it's best to keep the girl safe. "You got a name?" you ask as you begin walking. "Honami Tamazaki." she says. You try to keep her engaged in small talk, keep her focused so she doesn't freak out again....but you get the distinct feeling that something's watching you...

(Gonna close it here since we're auto-saging and I need to prepare some stuff.)
