You hear noise.

It’s muffled and indistinct, but you hear it.

Groggily, you open your eyes, finding yourself staring at an unfamiliar wall in a room that looked like it was freshly—and messily—repainted. You feel the skin of your eyepatch … only to realize that it had been replaced with what felt like gauze, along with the fact that you were out of your usual wear and were now in a hospital gown. You raise your back off the bed, your left hand running through the small bits of hair that were jutting out of the wraps of bandages that you found were around your head. The familiar scent told you that you were in some kind of medical unit—probably more likely than not to be a hospital, a makeshift one, probably, if you were still in Yokosuka.

You crick your neck, looking downward.

Your right arm, paralyzed and useless, was in a sling, the prosthetic exoskeleton completely removed. You make a futile attempt to move your digits—to raise your elbow, only to find it as invalid as it was before. Tugging the cloth of the sling aside, you give the scar on your arm a brief peek, before lying back in your bed.

It was probably morning or noon outside, judging by the light.

You hear a frustrated cry just outside the door to your room … and the owner yelling out something. It’s a little muffled and you can’t tell who it is, but you’re able to discern that they don’t sound the least bit pleased with … whatever it was they were displeased with.

‘You couldn’t have just called it in? You couldn’t have been rational for once in your life and go maybe I should get a Carrier or a Shaman or someone that knows better?!

‘We couldn’t risk any of it spreading.’

There’s no risk of spread if it’s not there in the first place, is there?

‘Do you think we could afford to take that chance at all? He brought back a potential breach from a corpse—what do you think a live one would’ve dropped in there?’ the second voice—a woman—attempts to rationalize whatever her point was; you have the distinct feeling they were talking about you, though. ‘It was either we run the standard tests and have a Carrier risk getting corrupted or we nip it in the—’

The door swings open.

As the door opens and the questions upon your tongue get ready to fly … you find them immediately dying on your lips as you move to greet your visitors: an annoyed but otherwise restrained Akashi, her heels clicking as she stepped into the room, and a KanMusu that wasn’t quite a ghost of your thoughts … but damn well felt like one right now.

K-Kaga.

She drops into a salute, not missing a beat.

Commander.

A sigh escapes you—you shake your head, before offering up a half-smile.

‘Good morning, you two—how’re things?’

‘Good to see you up and running, Commander—anything out of place?’

‘So nice to know that you’re actually bothering to ask that question now.’

She turns red at the veiled accusation, almost dropping the clipboard and pieces of paper in her hands and turning to Kaga, as if to support. No such luck, however, as your formerly-assigned Carrier crosses her arms, fixing a disapproving frown upon her brow and turning away.

‘Don’t look at me,’ Kaga huffs, ‘you’re the one that smashed your head on the panic button.’

If there was a time you thought that close to nothing set Akashi off, those days were long gone.

‘It was a pre-emptive contingency—if he was found to have been corrupted,’ she snarls, sounding extremely offended—emphasis on the extreme, as she actually bordered on being a true-blue harpy by the pitch of her voice, ‘then isolation would have kept it from infecting any others that weren’t involved. You want to go explain to the Court of Admirals that we took a risk on a whole Division by filtering the bunch of them through for resonance for one Commander’s health?’

‘I expected you to be rational and wait it out—or ask for help,’ Kaga snipes right back, sounding incredulous, ‘not put in half-baked measures because you suddenly felt paranoid.’

‘You know damn well I play things by the books,’ Akashi growls—you half expect her to grow fangs and claws, ‘and at the end of the day, it’s all going to come down to numbers. I took a gamble on it and I turned out wrong—but I won’t hesitate doing the same thing again if it means keeping the problem contained.

Kaga was not impressed, however, even if she did tone her own frown a bit.

‘Houshou would’ve known what to do … even if I wasn’t around, she was; you could’ve just—’

Akashi throws her arms wide, baring her teeth.

‘And if a remnant was around, we would have four on our hands instead of three—I don’t know if this idiot’s just lucky or really that damn good, but there was no way we would’ve bet that he was clean.’

‘He sat down and took your damn Dive; you think anyone corrupted would’ve even sat down and took it in?’

Now it was Kaga’s turn to lose her temper.

‘No Stream-worthy human of Commander rank has endured an all-out spiritual breakdown—it’s unprecedented. That’s not even going through the weird things his body’s been doing ever since he dropped into our—’

‘Akashi.’

You cut in, prompting the both of them to shuffle their feet, their cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

I personally think it's more reasonable for the commander to still be very upset about all of this. They nearly fried his brain, without explaining the procedure beforehand, because of a kneejerk decision based on an assumption. And from what Kaga is saying, it at least seems like it's SOP for a carrier to perform the procedure in the first place.

'I heard the word Divecare to explain to me just what that is?'

If nothing else, your query has them ceasing their attempts to glare one another to oblivion, as Akashi sighs and shuffles the items in her arms and throwing one last annoyed glance at your former Carrier before taking a step towards your bed, looking a little more hesitant than you had known her to be.

'It's its a Shaman technique,' Akashi starts, sighing, and rubbing her temples, 'every persons soul, mind, spirit, essence, whatever you wanna call it it's interlinked to this plane, this reality, existence. Spiritually-attuned beings, humans, many of them are able to dive into the corners of your soul to do whatever they want. What wewhat I didwas the common man's equivalent, so to speak.'

You open your mouth to ask something, only to find Kaga following up, sitting on the edge of your bed.

'Not everyone is spiritually attuned neither are all beings born from the Shamanistic arts, like us,' she answers tiredly, placing the weight on her palm as she met your eyes, 'Carriers, of course, being the sole exception because of the uniqueness of our situation, are able to learn and utilize it as well as any novice or neophyte Shaman. Normal humans aren't able to do it, neither are the majority of KanMusu that arent Carriers with very few exceptions. To date, only five KanMusu are able to use it with surgical precision using the term very, very liberally of course.'

The both of them glared at each other again. From here, you could feel Akashi raring to throttle Kaga and Kaga itching to do the same.

'Shamans and Carriers arent on hand twenty-four-seven which is why the technique was taughtin the case of emergencies,' Akashi continues tightly, turning away from Kaga and facing you. 'Princesses and Onis corrupt the minds of those that are around it or those that perceive it by sheer presence alone. The techniquethe artwas seen as a more practical backup rather than to risk the corruption of another Stream-worthy human or KanMusu; it's more isolated and observational in nature, so the Admiralty made use of it whenever they could after an encounter with a Princess as a sort of screening measure to check for contamination. It's had a pretty good success rate.'

Kaga grumbles, sitting up and crossing her arms. Akashi sigh in response, her shoulders slumping as she moved to amend her statement.

'Mostly.'

'It was meant to be of use in the absence of someone without the ability to enter the Stream proper to check for corruptions,' Kaga adds, 'In the absence.'

They glare at each other again, before harrumphing and turning away, their disdain more apparent than ever.

'Ive been out for two days?'

To your surprise, Kaga is the one who follows right up, raising an eyebrow in your direction.

'Youve been in hospital beds for longer any reason you expected this time to be any different?'

You open your mouth, trying to find the words before slumping your shoulders and conceding the point.

'You mentioned that my body's been weird,' you inquire. 'How exactly?'

Akashi

'It's hard to explain, but,' she 'you're losing weight.'

'Well, I've been running a pretty decent diet,' you announce, feeling a little vindicated. 'That's pretty much a given.'

'That's not what I'm talking about,' Akashi 'your body is reshaping itself, optimizing itself on its own accord. Athletes and soldiers go through conditioning and rigid, intense workouts to achieve the necessary conditions needed to undergo their day-to-day tasks; your body is undergoing rapid changes in metabolism and tolerance to compensate and compliment to your increase in attributes. That's not to say, of course, that you can go out and run half a mile in under a minute right now as you are, but ... we're not going to presume you're not going to eventually to be unable to do it, if what the Vice-Admiral told us what happened in Haszad's anything to by.'

You find your eyes widening slightly. It was odd that you'd performed something that was borderline superhuman and had forgotten all about it.

'The Vice-Admiral, he - ?'

'He told us, yes,' she nods, flipping through her sheets agin. 'Thus far, we don't know what to assume - Fata Aqueous has been known to cause certain mutations that have ended up beneficial. The case for your eye isn't entirely that rare, after all, but the changes in your muscle structure; your lung capacity; your stress thresholds; they're all going up and up ... soon enough, you're not going to be seeing much of that belly in the mirror in the mornings.'

She points to your stomach, prompting you to look down, absently running your left hand over it.

You're not quite sure if you were all that against the prospect, however.

'Commander,' Akashi grabs your attention again, 'do you have any clue you can give me to these changes? Have you been taking any supplements, vitamins or proteins or any illegal means of enhancement since you were assigned ... or even recently before you took the post?'

You think carefully. As far as you knew, there wasn't anything that you were ingesting that was worth mentioning.

That wasn't, of course, discounting that you had a stinking suspicion as to what the trigger and cause would've been, however.

'Can't think of one,' you shrug, 'maybe I'm just overdosing on Fairy's Tears?'

'We ran that possibility,' Akashi nods. 'Enhancement isn't uncommon, just ... not to this extent. Then again, I never ran that your body's also been in a constant state of repair dependent on the tears, so it may just be a hypothesis that we tested in the wrong environment.'

'Akashi,' Kaga cuts in, an odd sense of desperation in her voice. 'Please, give it to me straight.'

Akashi turns to her, stone-faced.

'Are you saying that he might,' her voice quakes, 'eventually get abs?'

You groan into your functioning hand.

It was nice to see she had her priorities in order. Really.

'Anything else you care to throw out there while I'm here?'

'Only that you take care of yourself,' Akashi answers, swiftly and pointedly. 'The shifts are already pushing your body's systems abnormally -- and while we can't actually pin-point the trigger, we've got a pretty strong hunch that it's tied to the stress levels, if what the Vice-Admiral's told us ... and that if you feel another burst, you do your best to calm it down. The human body's not meant to go through drastic changes like this without a cost ... and it may not be something you'll be able to fully dole up.'

You find yourself frowning. On any other day, you would have pumped a fist and jumped in joy at the reveal that you were able to lose weight without needing to lift so much as a finger ... with the new reveal of the costs that you would incur, however, a part of you attempted to rationalize that it couldn't have been something you couldn't afford. After all, you'd been used as a punching bag and rag-doll everything other day ... this couldn't have been anything

'It can't be that bad,' you try to bargain, letting out an amused chuckle. 'I mean, if I'm getting thinner than that means I'm getting healthier, right? My arteries are unclogging, I'm actually putting less stress on my bones ... at least from the medical perspective, I should be in the clear, right?'

Akashi doesn't return your good humor.

'Dealing with magic and the Shamanistic arts and everything in between and beyond,' she emphasizes, shaking her head, 'you don't cash in a purchase without checking the disclaimer tag. That goes for all the factors involved.'

You hear a snort from the only other person in the room.

'Nice to hear those little gears finally turning,' Kaga comments snidely, smirking in Akashi's direction.

'Kaga.'

You nip it in the bud, following up with another question, 'So this new condition that I have ... it's passive, out of my hands?'

'It's equal components physiological, biological, chemical and magical,' she states 'It's not a natural change but thankfully, the pace that it's working at right now seems to be benign enough to be manageable with your current ... state, for lack of better word.'

'So I can't exercise or anything?'

'Actually, I'm going to have to recommend you up the intensity and frequency of your regimen,' she replies, much to your surprise, 'that is, if you're currently running any.'

'Now you're confusing me.'

'The less space you have to stretch a rubber band,' she gestures with one hand, sticking out her little finger and thumb, 'the less painful the snap.'

'Oh ... right.'

'But,' Kaga interjects on your conversation, her face of the utmost seriousness, 'what about pecs? How defined are we talking here? Smooth? Contoured?'

The both of you regard Kaga with a flat glare, to which the Carrier responds by crossing her arms across her chest and muttering as she turned away.

Priorities. She definitely had them.

'So, other than the fact that I'll probably die from a screwed up metabolic rate in terms of sheer bodily stress,' you grimace, shaking your head, 'I'm the picture of health, right?'

'In terms of being able to suit up for active duty and tasks,' Akashi begins tentatively, taking out a notepad and whisking through it at a rapid pace before looking straight back at you, 'I don't see any problem to you doing your usual day-to-day chores, although I have told your Division to keep an eye on you in case anything happens. Your headache should be clearing up properly, but in case you feel anymore attacks, well, I've prepared some pills in case you need to pop one. You know the drill--don't forget and fall asleep in an alley somewhere because you forgot.'

As she takes out the aforementioned container of pills, you feel a sense of deja vu coming over you.

'I think I'm familiar with the terms, thanks.'

Akashi nods, setting the container on the wheeled table.

'I took the liberty of running some maintenance for the exoskeleton,' Akashi reveals, much to your relief--you'd wondered when she'd bring up the topic of your prosthetic; at this point, you didn' think you could operate without it at all. 'It'll be working as normal, of course--but you should really take the time to clean the nooks and hollows of the joint. I know it's run on magic, but gunk and grime build up, you know. Not even Fairy Magic'll help you with that ... and I definitely know you don't want to be sent the bill for a commissioned one.'

'Don't make a broke man shatter, Akashi,' you sigh, lifting your only working arm in defeat. 'I get the message.'

'Also ... I'd like to tell you that there's been some progress concerning the substance that you retrieved a while back,' she declares, not missing a beat.

You cock your head to one side, feeling a little lost. It could have been because you'd just had the stuffing knocked out of you--mentally and spiritually--and had a two day nap, but despite the assumption of familiarity Akashi had for you in regards to the vague terminology, you really couldn't tell what she was specifying. You make a face, scratching the side of your head through the gauze, hoping for a pick-up.

'Substance?'

'During your extra-curriciular activities,' she emphasizes, gesturing with a wiggle of her eyebrows, 'the one that gave you a really bad headache.'

It hits you like a smack to your noggin, coming back to you all at once.

You nod, feeling the air around the room suddenly going stale.

'We've had developments?'

'I wouldn't call it a development,' she shuffles--it definitely seemed like it, judging by the subtle shifts in her body language, 'but ... I managed to pin-point a few things--some things that the Admiral would like to see you about as soon as you think you're able to manage it.'

'Duly noted, Akashi.'

She gives a small bow.

'Since you're up and running ... and I have some rounds to do of my own ...'

'Of course,' she gives another small bow, moving towards the door, 'I'll be back in a bit, Commander; Kaga.'

She leaves without a fuss, shutting the door quietly, her footsteps barely audible as she went about her business. In your bed, your arm in a sling, your eyes meet Kaga's, whose form is as still as a leaf on a spring morning. Despite having been her immediate superior for weeks, you can't help but find yourself a little lost, presenting yourself before here like this. A flurry of questions, a rush of statements and words flood your mind, each syllable and character fighting the next as you pondered just what it was that you wanted to say to her. Kaga herself is quiet, her face not giving away any sort of gap for you to consider, looking as disciplined as she was on the battlefield, every visible wrinkle on her face waiting in anticipation for your words.

You cough nervously ... prompting her to give a small, silent chuckle.

'You've lost weight.'

'I miss you, you know?'

To your surprise, she laughs--not in mockery, but in amusement. She covers her mouth behind her hand, her eyes practically dancing in amusement as she regarded you and took your words in. You don't feel the least bit embarrassed--almost strangely serene as the words translate the thoughts upon your tongue into sound ... and their recipient holding back the full force of her smile, her expression positively glittering.

'It's only been few days, sir,' she comments, letting out the last of her amusement with one chortle.

'I know, it's just that,' you offer a grimace, rubbing the back of your neck, 'I'm kinda gotten used to your side of the bed being ... warm.'

Something dies in her throat. It must have been the size of an elephant, because you could hear it, even from here. Her features turn unexpectedly flushed, her brows creasing together and her fist raised, a nervous cough sounding in the room, coming right from her mouth. You find her cheeks glowing, if only slightly, as she sets down her hand and shuffles closer to you. Kaga tries her best to keep a straight face ... and you really have to give her the credit that she was due.

Self-control must have come second nature to Carriers, given the odd quirk that they were bestowed upon.

'Charmer,' she snipes affectionately, leaning in and staring up at you.

You glance down at her hand, traveling up your leg and giving your lap a gentle pat. For a while, the only sound in the room is the both of your breathing.

She's a big girl, but not so big you can't put one arm around her and pull her in. Kaga tenses at your touch, but she doesn't push you away. It's all you need to hook your fingers around her waist, pulling yourself closer to her. She doesn't look at you, her breathing low and slow at your tender caress. Neither of you say a word, just revelling in each other's presence--the warmth that you share, the heat that you give--the sheets on the bed crumpling up as she drags her right knee, her left thigh, across the fabric to bury herself underneath the stubble of your chin. You hadn't shaved in a while--it hadn't grown wild, of course, but the fuzz, by her tickling breath, was probably at least comparable to the Admiral's. You'd have to correct that when they let you go back to your barracks. You feel her weight shift a little more, propping herself up from her position perpendicular to your lap to directly upon it. She's a little heavier than you remember (Not that you had lost enough neurons say it to her face) but it's all the more for you to hold and ... dare you say it? Love.

It's hard to find words to tell her how you feel.

Were you glad to see her again?

Were you angry that she had left without so much as a word of goodbye?

Did she just come back because she saw it as her duty as a Carrier?

'Commander?'

'Yeah?'

'You're sitting on my hand.'

You turn red, more than merely furthering her amusement.

Now encouraged, you find more of her weight shifting on your lap, the side of her ample, thick bottom sliding against your waist in a manner you find almost uncomfortable. Her hand runs from your belly to your chest like a slow massage, a gulp escaping your throat as you find the tables truly turned, if they were ever flipped in the first place. It's hard for you to move; even harder to keep still. Kaga's chest presses against you as she breathes upon the bared skin of your thorax; you can hear her taking in your scent. Slow and deliberate, she is more relentless than a tigress cornering her prey. Her hand hooks under your right side, slightly lifting and pinning you against her body. You can feel every contour in her through your clothes ... and in an attempt to stave the cramp in your back, you lean back onto the bed, hearing the click of her teeth clashing together.

She hovers above you, her breasts hanging, barely hidden by the loose fabric of her dougi. Her eyes are innocent, wide, begging. Her knee presses against your thigh, her hand caught under your weight, lips leaking warm saliva, form trembling.

Somehow, you manage to retain control.

It's a miracle, but your libido is somehow kept buried underneath your reason and logic, even with the embodiment of temptation sitting on your lap with a shovel the size of a barn door. Kaga stares at you with lidded eyes, waiting for your next move. Her breasts wobble slightly as her breaths become heavier by the moment ... and you can feel the tip of that shovel digging into the dirt of your reason, one scoop at a time. It wasn't anything you hadn't seen before. Kaga's touch, Kaga's scent ... you'd tasted and breathed it in more times than you could count. The coil of her body tightening around you and refusing to let go; the sound of her cries, sometimes muffled, sometimes unabashed, tongue out and eyes closed in an ecstasy that you were somehow able to give and give. You had done the steps to this dance before. There was no difference between now and then.

So why did it feel like it was so much harder this time?

'Kaga,' you manage, with great reluctance, kissing her forehead as an apology, 'Akashi's going to be back soon.'

She makes out a whine and a sigh, raising her hand from the skin of your chest. Even your body lets out a protest at that. She doesn't bother covering up, however, lifting her arms and scooting closer to you--which you hadn't thought possible, given that she was already all over you in more ways than one--until her full weight, her whole body, was using you as a makeshift mattress, your useless arm sandwiched somewhere between her navel, dougi top and her warm, ample breasts. A frosty rumble escapes her, her displeasure with your sudden reluctance to sate her own roaring fire more than merely unwelcome.

'You did it with Nagato,' she grumbles, pressing her cheek against half your bare chest. 'Can't see why you won't spoil the rest of us once in a while.'

You frown.

'We got caught, though,' you try to reason, staring down at your now half-smiling former Carrier, 'and if I recall, you weren't exactly the most charitable on the terms of that particular engagement.'

She turns her body on your torso, making you wince in discomfort. Maybe you had been wrong--maybe she was, indeed, a big girl. Her smile turns into a smirk as she crawls the distance between your lips, giving you a slow, gentle kiss before drawing back.

'I can't say I wasn't,' she pinches your cheek affectionately, 'but is it really so hard to just knock on our doors and ask if we'd like to join in?'

You roll your eyes.

'You know that's not--'

Turning red, you look away, feeling the heat in your ears. You'd forgotten just what type of KanMusu she was. For shame

'Well?' she further enquire, sounding as mischievous as you remember.

'You know,' you grunt, feeling a little more defeated than you suspect you probably deserved to be, 'I always forget how much of a creature of persistence you are.'

Kaga laughs, loudly and clearly, raising herself from your body and propping herself up on her arms ... and you find yourself staring into the earthly brown of her eyes. You find your brows creasing as you stare at her expression, unsure of what to say next. Her body presses against yours, warm and still very much aroused. Her weight keeps you in place, her arms to either side of you to ensure you didn't try anything funny to escape her grasp. You find yourself back to where you'd started: your logic and reason being tested in succession to your last attempt at keeping your more primal side buried. This time, however ... you're not sure if it's at all intentional on her part or if it was just you that suddenly felt like discarding the coil and pretense of your station and to jump into it head-first like every other male presented with the object of his affections.

'I am nothing if not persistent,' she replies, still looking visibly amused, judging by the twinkle in her eyes. 'I don't think I have anything on you, though, to be honest.'

You frown, feeling insulted. Just a little, of course, but Kaga's delivery--as always--seemed to rope you into that battleground of pettiness, and you really can't help but attempt a response ... and ignoring just how heated you felt yourself, down there.

'Is that a poke?'

'No, this is.'

This time, she does. Just ... not in the context you had taken it.

'K-Kaga...'

You don't know when she'd shifted her right hand to your nethers, the gentle touch of her fingertips felt right through the fabric of the sheets that covered you from your navel and downward. You can almost hear it; the shovel digging through your rhyme and reason ... and Kaga slowly making her way past your defenses, eager to reach the prize at the bottom. You can see them now, the glistening sweat upon her full breasts, the angle of view so convenient that you find your eyes and your thoughts defecting to her side of the argument. You had miscalculated: you weren't at square one. She was moving you into a corner of her own making by your design.

'By your word, Commander,' she mentions in a teasing, sing-song voice, a full smirk upon her features.

You'd never thought a hospital gown could feel tight.

'Kaga...'

You do the only thing you can.

Raising your only working limb, you pull her down onto you in a quick, sudden motion, bringing her head onto your bare thorax. Her body immediately stiffens as you make full contact with one another, a muffled yelp escaping from her lips as she shifts again, her blushing features looking up to face you with purple ears.

'A little bit of spoiling probably won't hurt.'

She doesn't answer, choosing to squeaking in embarrassment as she buries herself deeper into your chest.

'Is there a reason you didn't bother leaving a goodbye?'

She doesn't say a word, her eyes staring off at something to your left. You can heart her heartbeat--or whatever her physical form saw fit to simulate--through your chest, her bare breast making contact with a patch of skin from all the previous rustling. You don't push her, letting her come to you on her own terms. It wasn't a question whose answer was something you wanted to taint with your insistence rather than allow a natural flow from her thoughts--and if she didn't have one, so be it.

Back in the day, you'd thought that your average KanMusu was a saluting, gun-toting, patriotic construct in the shape of an attractive woman you wouldn't mind being at the helm of ... and in the last two months, you'd found yourself swallowing the bitter but necessary truth of the matter. That they were no more caricatures than you were just a fry cook that had stumbled on an opportunity. Eyes that didn't waver even when surrounded by despair and nightmares; fists that didn't stop even when they were beaten by the odds ... and hearts that never stopped loving those that they promised to protect, even to the last beat.

Kaga was no different.

At times a needle in your side and a heel on your toes ... but at all times loving, tender and welcoming--that was Kaga. Your Kaga. Even if she had stepped out the door without a word, that wouldn't change. At her continued silence, you place your palm upon her shoulder ... only to find her snorting and looking up at you once more, wearing a wry, sad, half-smile.

'You know,' she says in a small voice, sighing loudly right after, 'being around you, maybe sometimes I need the reminder.'

You furrow your brows, confused.

'Reminder?'

'That I'm not human.'

The words die in your mouth.

'I've said goodbye many times,' she interlaces her fingers upon your chest, resting her chin upon them as she stared right up at you, 'and many times ... I found that I should've, but with you, I ... I guess what I'm trying to say is ...'

She clicks her tongue, her pony-tail wobbling as she shifted slightly against your torso.

'I guess that I didn't want to--not to you,' she grimaces, 'I'm used to it, of course--being here, in this world, I'm used to an empty warm spot to my right and shadows around the corner that don't really care that they're not meant to be there anymore.'

Her eyes shine as her form trembles, tears gathering at the corner of her eyes.

'I suppose with you I wanted ... to keep the delusion that for once, that shadow'd still be there to bump into.'

She smiles as they fall.

'Stupid, huh?'

You hadn't expected this.

It was a strange feeling, this kind of sincerity. Hands on your chest, small rivulets of tears falling along her flushed cheeks--Kaga holds on to you, as if for dear life. It's as though you're repeating history--a being of fire and power mounted upon you, blue flames dancing but not burning as tender hands touched your person, thoughts intermingling and doubt smashing itself into a million pieces. This time, however, there was no crisis; no immediate need to fall back upon a safety net and have yourself pulled up. It was just the two of you, here, with your hearts baring themselves to one another as though meeting for the first time. She doesn't want to let go of you--she never wants to say goodbye; never wanted to say goodbye--and she wants to bask in you and what you can offer alone, the good and the bad, because ... for one of the few times in your life, she felt that you were, of all things, worth to be around.

It almost floors you.

'I don't think it's stupid at all,' you begin tentatively, trying to hold your own emotions in check--a small laugh escapes you, much to your consternation, 'I--you don't have to think of it like that. It's not wrong to want those kinds of things and it's ...'

You trail off, unsure of how to continue, before throwing that last layer of dirt out and pulling that shovel in yourself.

You kiss her.

Kaga is taken aback. She hesitates to receive you, feeling as shocked as you were by your sudden directness.

It's not for long, though.

She sucks on your bottom lip, running her hands through the bottom hole of your hospital gown and up your torso. Your right arm flops uselessly out of its sling; you wince as she gets rough with your shoulders, massaging them with her thumbs as she goes at you with all the enthusiasm of a woman in a desert given a glass of water. Her kisses are salty, her touches are rough--and you find that you're not the only one who had buried everything primal and needy under mounds of logic and reason. You feel her hand grab onto what little is left your once-engorged gut, giving it a rough caress, pulling away and diving again like a prize fighter. Your own reason thrown to the curb, you go back at her, trailing for her lips to her neck, dropping her top past her shoulders and latching onto her teat with a hunger to match her own.

Kaga moans, her digits slipping underneath the covers of the bandages of your head as you suckled roughly and hungrily, before finally pulling back and allowing her to fall back onto the bed, her faced flushed with arousal.

Your thoughts come at you, a mile a minute. Maybe faster.

'Uh, um,' you can't find the words, finding yourself face-to-face with her bare, glistening chest, the strap around her waist the only thing holding the ensemble together.

She flicks your nose, giving you an unamused, yet still visibly embarrassed glare, her mouth forming a half-scowl as she fixed her eyes upon yours.
>>
'Idiot,' Kaga gives a shy, if eager smile as she raises her arms above her head--accentuating her chest, 'what are you waiting for?'

'I ... I have willpower.'

Kaga's eyes widen, as she stares at you, confused.

'Oh, look what's going on, I leave for ten minutes and this is what they get up to ... in a public facility under my watch, no less.'

If you breathed into your palm, you suspected you could see your breath.

Your blood runs cold as you look to the left, seeing Akashi wearing a very, very thin smile and carrying a rather heavy-looking crate in her hands ... and dropping it loudly as she slams the door shut with her foot. Her features are serene, emotionless. It was like staring at an uncanny doll, it's eyes blinking only from the trick of light. She slaps her hands together, tilting her head and humming loudly, before stiffly marching over to a chair by the wall and dragging it to the spot where she stood ... and throwing you a grin that would have made a Princess scream.

'Ah, I was wondering if the reason Kaga-san came over was out of pure worry for her ex-superior's constitution,' she muses, dropping herself onto her seat and clapping her hands--you don't dare say a word, fearing for your life. 'It turns out that they're just a bunch of honrdogs waiting to make the beast with two backs, aren't they?'

She laughs loudly, sounding more like a lion coughing up a lung than a reaction to any humor she found in the situation. Taking out a pen from her lab coat's pocket, she picks up the clipboard from the top of the crate, making affirmative noises and scribbling audibly upon it.

'Oh, but every incident is an opportunity, isn't it? It's been so long since I've actually had a potential dissertation to advance my career.'

You don't dare comment on that, either.

'So go ahead, proceed with your ritual, yes, yes,' she says with a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. 'I'm sure the committee would love every waking detail on the emotional maintenance of Carrier-type KanMusu.'

The pencil snaps in her hand as she brings it to her clipboard.

'So don't mind me--please fuck each other's brains out as I take these notes,' she giggles unnaturally as her voice lowers into a borderline-demonic growl, her expression still serene, 'Please coat her womb in your essence and spunk so I may submit my observations for research, in the name of science and progress. Please. Do.'

You look to Kaga for help.

She only shrugs.

You take a deep breath as you step under the cloudy skies, Kaga walking right beside you. Autumn was definitely around the bend, if it wasn't already here. Around you, you can see the crew already getting busy sorting the supplies out. The compound was coming along nicely, with most of the buildings already having their surroundings and structure patched up. You can even make out the RADAR base being put into place on the open field, a jeep and its passengers yelling at a twosome of engineers installing the structure into the ground. Things were definitely coming along nicely.

You want to let out a wide smile and bask in the hope of a better tomorrow ... only you're not too sure if one half of your present company would respond all that well ... to anything you'd say, really.

Akashi is a quaking mess, clutching her clipboard as though it was her only hold onto sanity. Her eyes dart left and right, as if unsure of her ability to make sense of this odd new reality. You feel a pang of built looking at her--but she had been insistent with her words ... and Kaga, being Kaga, had been more than eager to meet the challenge and channel her own passions. Akashi probably hadn't been prepared for that--and in the most bare of truths, you hadn't expected how receptive Kaga was ... to everything.

Your Carrier huffs, puffing her chest and putting on a slight scowl as she placed her hands, walking over to Akashi.

'Chin up, it wasn't that bad.'

Akashi reels as if struck, her face contorting and her eyes widening, pointing an accusatory finger at ... you.

'THAT'S NOT HOW MATING WORKS!'

You raise your hands to calm her down, only to find her distress heightening with every step you take towards her form. Her cheeks grow red, and in her embarrassment, she raises the clipboard to her her nose.

'Which part of mating involves th-that and-and, oh, I showed that face--I can't believe I showed that face. You're nasty! Nasty, nasty, nasty! I-Is that what you do, just bring any pretty face in and have 'em spread up for you--and you, tongues don't work--how could you put it there and just ... lick, and ...'

You blush a little as she clicks her knees together, one hand absently covering her groin, where her bikini bottom now preserved her modesty ... not that you could say much for it. For a moment, a stray thought hits you that you found Akashi a little--dare you say it--adorable. Not adorable in the way that Kaga had brought her to orgas--

You find yourself being hit at the side of your head by a clipboard, a deeply-blushing Akashi looking like she would be gushing blood from her ears posing with her hand raised, before pointing to you, then to Kaga.

'Y-You should be ashamed of yourselves!'

She stomps away, grumbling to herself.

Kaga sighs, offering you a sympathetic smile.

You decide to address an immediate worry.

'You got anything on the ISSF? If they'll actually be calming down any time soon?'

Kaga closes her eyes, looking hesitant to even touch your query.

'It's hard to say,' she manages, albeit a little tentatively, her eyes rotating downwards as she pauses for a while, 'but they're definitely not pleased with the developments--the ISSF agreed to very rigid and specific terms in the forging of the alliance under the League of Nations ... and very strict rules regarding the availability of the knowledge they imparted, as well as its accessibility. In their eyes, its hardly the first time that the Admiralty decided to act independently of their wishes, but it's definitely one of the bigger considerations that they had when deciding to pull back the approval of our service to them.'

'It's not the first time they've done something like this?'

She tilts her head--almost cutely, you might add--with wide eyes and a stoic expression ... before gesturing to your eyepatch.

'This?'

'The knowledge was not meant to be made public,' she answers matter-of-factly, 'Fairy's Tears and--the methodology of their dilution--was intended as a dampening medium to ensure continued operations of the Commanders and Admirals after certain ... inconveniences. More of a restorative draught than a ... commercial cure, if you will.'

As she grimaces, it strikes you.

'You're talking about the patent for Fairy's Tears,' you frown. 'They're angry about not getting profits off that?'

'It wasn't about the profit--the Admiralty decided to act in the ... best interests of humanity to assist in the dissection of the knowledge imparted,' Kaga sighs tiredly, 'and it didn't stop there, either. Many of the applications of the Shamanistic Arts are allegedly ... outside of the pre-agreed confines. Some of them are even seen as heretical and blasphemous. The ISSF sees the agreement with the Congregation of Lords and Taiyouga's Senate as--as humans say--the straw that breaks its back.'

You turns your head upwards, letting out a grunt as guilt begins to peek through.

'And what about you?'

'Me?'

You rub your neck, shaking the thoughts of your little jaunt through a Haszadian secret compound right out of your head.

'You gotta have an opinion, right?'

'I was still active when the ISSF was formed,' she begins, letting out a mirthless chuckle, 'believe me when I say that this is hardly the first time they've had a tiff on this scale--all we can do is wait it out and hope that the war doesn't overtake a quarrel.'

'That's a lot of hope,' you give half a grin, to which she replies with a small bark of laughter.

'Not really,' she straightens herself, holding her belly, 'but ... I think that you've taught me that once in a while, miracles can drop in right out of nowhere ... even if they come with headaches the size of an Oni.'

You begin to chuckle ... and immediately.

'Kaga, are you talking about me?'

She only hums in response.

'Kaga.'

You catch her attention, feeling a little more nervous than you probably should have been. You rub your neck, muttering under your breath as you slowly close the distance and place your hands in your pockets. You're barely a foot away from her, your cheeks flushed with embarrassment as you come face-to-face with a moment that you really hadn't planned on actually going through with, even on a temporary basis--which made it all the more shameful that you were acting like a shy schoolgirl at the end of a term. The Vice-Admiral would have probably doubled over in laughter at your sudden streak of hesitation.

'You sure I can't convince you to stay?'

This was beyond a mere plea.

This was the kind of pleas for the over-dramatic station goodbyes in those horrid dramas you'd inadvertently caught showing on your busted up old set.

Kaga, to your surprise, however, hooks her arms around your neck, touching her forehead to yours and wearing a soft, gentle smile.

'You can,' she utters, nearing her lips to your ear ... before drawing back and fixing you with a serious, business-like stare. 'I wish for my ass--my rectum to be filled with your essence every morning, my mouth and jaw to feel sore from use and abuse by the time I go to bed and my birth canal raped and shaped into the mold of your cock.'

You groan--so much for a softer mood.

She smirks.

'Do we have a deal?'

>'Of course we do--and don't forget your designation as my personal urinal. We can't leave that out, can we?' (Join in the sarcasm)
>'Can you be serious about this for once?' (Insist on the gravity of your question)

'Of course we do,' you roll your eyes and raising your chin, 'and don't forget your designation as my personal urinal. We can't leave that off the list.'

She chuckles, wrapping you in a type embrace.

'It's a promise then,' she says with obvious humor in her voice, 'I'll be your personal urinal--for every need and want you have.'

The joking tone is more than apparent ... but the kiss to your lips is more honest than you'd expected. It's quick and a little more chaste compared to the usual flavor, but not at all unwelcome. The amusement on her face quickly fades, however, as does the hold on your waist by her hands. Kaga's eyes turn away, reality quickly turning its ugly head around--she doesn't say a word, but she doesn't have to: she couldn't go against her orders. As much as she felt for you, as much as she needed and wanted you ... she couldn't. Her loyalties were more than clear, the chasm wide ... but not irreconcilable. Only not now.

'I'll be back--promise.'

You understood that.

War. Politics. Objectives. Priorities.

Sometimes, really, you wondered ... what truly was the worth of a warm hand in your palm?

'Kaga, I...'

She wraps her arms around you again, tight and brief, before letting go.

'I'll keep you posted,' she says hurriedly, stepping away from you, rubbing her forearm as her expression turns rigid, serious. 'Houshou--I'll keep in touch with the Division, keep you updated on what's happening. Right now, the both of us ... we have jobs to do, right?'

'Yeah,' you nod absently, a smile making its way onto your features, as well as hers. 'This isn't goodbye, though.'

Her eyes widen slightly ... and she sighs, snickering as she placed one hand on her hips.

'No, this isn't,' she holds back a laugh, relief ringing like accompanying bells with it. 'Be seeing you, Commander.'

She drops into a salute, which she returns.

'Take care out there, Kaga.'

She's gone without further fuss, a skip in her step and--although you couldn't see it--a grin on her lips.

It was a good start to the day.

Or what was left of it, anyway.

You walk past the crews at work, tucking your hands into your thankfully-thicker-than-the-usual-fare uniform top. Before anything else, you had to see the Admiral. His office was the closest amongst the mental checklist you had in mind ... and with the situation as dire as it had become, you really couldn't afford lolly-gagging around the issue any longer. Around you, the bustle of the base is almost palpable, everyone feeling more energetic than you had seen in a long time ... and you find quite a few eyes on you, too, as you shuffle past the duos and trios of men and women, reeking of curiousity and--dare you say it--an odd measure of respect. The whine of machinery echoes in your ears, your senses growing more and more sensitive as the win picked up. You grumble at the sensation of the glaring rays shining down upon the town--it did little to alleviate the season's chill. You reach the main junction of the compound, turning to your right and stepping onto the grass, the Admiral's office unit clearly in sight.

As you walk up to the ramp, you see Ooyodo walking right out, a stone-faced Teruzuki and a man in a black suit and felt hat, his face peppered with craters and wearing a scowl that would have made milk curdle. Whoever he was, the both of them were escorting him off-site ... and judging by his expression, he didn't look the least bit pleased with whatever had transpired within the Admiral's office, or the fact that he was being escorted off-base.

His eyes briefly meet yours, before he turns his nose up and continues marching, following the two KanMusu without a word. You pause, creasing your brows and keeping your eyes on him, right until the three of them disappeared behind a tent filled with crates ... but not before managing to spy what looked like a bronze medallion hanging from his pocket.

He was a Vassal. A Vassal from the Congregation of Lords.

Why was a Vassal here?

You shake your head, stepping right up the ramp and knocking on the door with your prosthetic.

'Come on in.'

You turn the knob and step inside ... and find the Admiral in his chair, looking older than he already was, his top button undone and his hat in his hands, every wrinkle on his face more pronounced than it previously was. He fixes you with a tight smile and a nod, to which you reply with a formal salute and the click of your heels. He doesn't return it, however ... and pushes himself up from behind his desk, throwing his hat onto the table and crossing his arms.

'Good to see you up and running, Commander,' he nods. 'How's the ...'

He taps the side of his head, grimacing.

‘Sir,’ you begin hesitantly, ‘what do you know about the dissolution of the Admiralty’s Vanzerian branch?’

He pulls out his pipe and strikes a match, lighting the chamber.

‘Only that it happened,’ he huffs, ‘and that it was done on the grounds that … the House of Arms and the Monarchy saw the Alliance and the program as unfeasible and ineffective. To be fair, I really don’t blame them for looking it like that—one KanMusu in hundreds of attempts to keep the Abyssals at bay? You can get a better deal by a roadside eatery.’

‘What if I told you that,’ you pause as he looks up from his pipe, ‘that wasn’t … the whole truth?’

‘Then I’d get an ice pack ready,’ he grumbles, taking a puff, ‘because I am getting too old for this shit.

The both of your share a look … and for the first time in a while, you feel a chasm of rank and class between the both of you. Your throat feels dry, despite having taken a whole jug of water prior to your release—and two oranges to snack on—and the seconds seem to tick away slower than ever/ The Admiral stares at you, leaning against a low drawer on the side, waiting for your words. You clasp and unclasp your hands, feeling a little unsure of how to proceed … but knowing full well that you had to do it. This wasn’t something that you could just keep bottled-up and stowed away—even Iowa understood that.

You close your eyes, remembering feeling of the book in your hands … the sterility of the white room … and a tentative, if friendly smile; a warm set of fingers clasping around yours and pulling you up.

‘Vanzer didn’t manage to summon just one KanMusu, sir … it had another one: Carrier Saratoga.’

‘It would’ve been on record.’

‘Her summoning … was unconventional,’ you pause, clearing your throat, ‘it wasn’t done through the Shamans of Basilius—or, at least, not the Shamans we’re associated with.’

‘Commander, I don’t have time to dance around hoops,’ he growls.

You hurriedly continue.

‘The summoning was done by a heretical sect—they used the corpse of an Abyssal Command Unit as a conduit to bring Saratoga’s spirit to this world … and fused her spirit with … the Abyssal’s essence; they made the Abyssal its tether. It wasn’t long before she … went berserk. The base was annihilated, most of the standing assets destroyed and two towns ended up devastated. The Monarchy decided to dissolve the alliance with the Admiralty—that’s why they decided to send Iowa to us. It wasn’t just because they just suddenly decided to give up, sir … we have an artificial Princess with the Admiralty’s marking all over it out there, and an association with a Heretical Sect of Shamans.’

He takes a slow drag of his pipe, staring at the wall.

‘How do you know all this, son?’

‘Iowa informed me last week, sir.'

He sighs, rubbing his temples.

Fuck.

‘Commander,’ he takes his pipe from his lips, lifting a withering gaze from the opposite wall and now looking right at you, ‘you need to understand just how insane this sounds—and let’s say that every lick of it’s true … why would Iowa have decided to tell you instead of putting up formal submission of the information to the Agents, or even the Grand Lieutenant?’

‘Because the last order she was given was to keep mum about it,’ you don’t miss a beat. ‘I think we’ve been around KanMusu enough to know to what value they’d take a command—even from horrible counsel. It was hard enough to get her talking it in the first place.’

He pushed himself off his makeshift seat.

‘Yeah, that too,’ the Admiral chimes, pointing his pipe right at you. ‘How did you of all of the men and women under my command get this out of her?’

His scowl is intimidating.

You clear your throat, squaring your shoulders and turning your gaze up to the ceiling.

‘I … just asked, sir,’ you answer, albeit hesitantly. ‘I was assigned to keep an eye on her, so, I just … decided to ask properly.’

His throat rumbles as his scowl turns into a glare … before he draws back, his shoulders slumping. The Admiral, if he didn’t before, looked twice his age, rubbing his temples and rolling the tip of his pipe between his fingers, turning away with a heavy sigh. You don’t blame him—it was hard to take it in when Iowa had spilled the beans … you could only imagine how it could feel for someone of his station and responsibility.

‘What’s our next move, then, sir?’

Our next move?

He turns on his heel, steely eyes pointed straight at you once more.

‘Commander, pending verification any word that has been exchanged between us in the last five minutes is classified and under scrutiny,’ his voice is practically a growl. ‘There is no next move.’

You move to say something, only to halt as he makes his way to his table, and manoeuvring himself around it to plop himself onto his chair, his pipe now back in his mouth. The Admiral taps the contents of the chamber into his half-filled ashtray, grumbling as he tents his hands, his gaze now looking right past you. You don’t dare say a word now—after the encounter with Saratoga, he had probably just expected you to come in with a bone to pick and choice words at worst … and right now, he looked more than eager to trade for the peace of mind a subordinate’s grumblings came with instead of the open door to a conspiracy.

‘This isn’t good.’

You find that you could only nod.

‘If what you’re saying is right, then we might have a bigger problem than just the Shamans packing their bags and leaving,’ he leans back in his chair. ‘If a Heretic Sect is found to be associated with the Admiralty in any way … the fairies’ll be following suit.’

‘What’s the background on Heretic Sects, anyway?’

‘Well,’ ‘Basilius isn’t exactly generous with anything happening behind its borders … but to answer your question, the Heretic Sects are splinter groups from the Basilius Shamans that don’t agree with Shamanistic traditions or the administration. Internationally, officially and publicly, they’re no different from an opposing coalition in a democracy; just something that’s just there, products of the system and the like …’

He sounds tired, wooden, saying—no, reciting—it. You see the familiar wrinkles crease further, small wisps of smoke blowing out through his nostrils as his expression takes an even grimmer quality. His chair creaks underneath his weight, his eyes distant but otherwise alive with thought; focused. You don’t know how long you stand there, waiting on his word, but the pause is long enough to have you consider that perhaps it wasn’t the most prudent decision to talk out loud about something like this.

The sigh that escapes him is loud enough that you could have mistaken it for a lion’s growl.

‘But, well, it runs a little bit deeper than that. The Heretic Sects have actually been around for about two hundred years, opposing the Shamans … I don’t know if there are any buried bodies, mind you, and I don’t wanna know,’ he rubs his temples, his voice now troubled. ‘Basilius ain’t one big ball of sunshine—there’s a lot of—for lack of better word—politicking with the Magic, Alchemy, the Arts, whatever the Hell you wanna call it. The Shaman Elders and the Order don’t want to budge on any subject of change—they want to keep to their traditions and practices to what they know and the Heretic Sects see the practice of being a Shaman as cruel and inhuman.’

You frown, feeling lost.

‘What are the Heretic Sects after? Change for the sake of change?’

‘I don’t know,’ he answers tiredly, ‘people ain’t exactly the most sane bunch anyway—put a gaggle of ‘em in a spot and you can watch ‘em tear each other apart just to get some elbow room. Whatever the Heretic Sects want—and what the one that got involved with the Vanzer Branch—isn’t on our list of priorities. Whatever that side wants isn’t our concern. Keeping this quiet, however, is.’

‘I understand, sir, but,’ you clear your throat, ‘don’t you think it’s worth looking into? I mean … even if the Vanzer Branch got desperate, from what I know, summoning a KanMusu’s not exactly just a switch you can just flick, right? You’re sure this isn’t worth looking into? Whoever they are, I mean …’

You trail off, unsure of how to continue.

‘It would imply that this Heretic faction isn’t just another rebel rouser with a speech template.’

The Admiral pushes himself out of his chair.

‘It’s out of our hands, though, son—and I think for now, it’s for the best to leave it alone.’

‘What about Iowa, sir?’

He manoeuvres around his table before crossing his arms, sitting on the edge.

‘Well,’ he begins, tentatively, ‘we did a thorough check on her—her core was exhausted, but we didn’t find any traces of corruption other than the odd dent … although we did almost break the rating scale on her class. Girl’s sturdy as they come, even if her structure’s built a lot differently compared to the usual fare the Shamans seem to summon.’

‘Sir?’

‘Nothing,’ he waves it off, his pipe twirling in his fingers. ‘Iowa’s not going to be implicated, if that’s what you’re worried about … but I will be sending a note to her telling her to stop keeping vital information like an Artifical Princess running around unchecked under wraps. I also expect you to emphasize that whetevr she’s got under that belt of hers, it’s no good here: she needs to know that we’re all on the same side—we work together or the walls are going to come crashing down on us. That’s why this alliance, this understanding, exists.’

His voice is clear and firm, his dark irises staring at you like a hawk, slightly threatening, completely intimidating. He may have been soft in his words, but there was no misinterpretation here: his patience had been run in the course of this conversation, and while he hadn’t thrown you right out in a bout of frothing rage, the fact that he hadn’t done so spoke volumes of the length of consideration he had for his Command … you included.

‘I understand, sir.’

A grunt, rumbles from his throat as he returns your answer with a nod, before stroking his chin and looking very thoughtful.

‘While we’re on the topic of our guests, though … how is her rehabilitation going? From what I hear Nagato’s volunteered as her personal coach or something—thought she’d be out of the rut by now.’

Unfortunately,’ you begin tentatively, ‘we’re no closer to reactivating her Core’s combat matrix any more than she had been herself. I’ve left it to the girls to try whatever they think’ll finally stick, but … well, as you can see, nothing’s actually, well, stuck.’

He hums, letting out a troubled sigh.

‘The Admiralty wants her up and running yesterday,’ he pauses, placing his hands on his hips, ‘with the shortage of able hands we’ve been having, I can’t say I blame them, either … we could use every able body out there: especially a Battleship-class of her stature.’

You really don’t know if that was just a passing comment or a sly suggestion for you to do something about it. Either way, you choose to only acknowledge it with a wordless nod.

‘I’ve gone over a few of the suggestions with her—she doesn’t seem keen on anything that isn’t her way.’

The Admiral’s eyes widen … before he guffaws into a closed fist.

‘Sorry, just getting a little deja vu there,’ he rumbles, ‘have you gone over it with Yuubari and Akashi?’

‘Not in-depth, but … Yuubari put up a few options, too,’ you tap your chin, trying to remember her exact words, ‘there was something that she called a … direct operation, but she said that whatever trauma’s already there posed a … significant risk in itself? Apparently the Core isn’t in any condition to be reconfigured that way without risking losing her as a whole, according to her … and even if Iowa was willing here, Akashi and Yuubari aren’t eager following through if it has a higher chance of losing her than just letting her do her own thing.’

‘Anything that she seems to be inclined towards?’

You shake your head.

‘Other than the physical rehab that she’s been running—starting the engine until it catches, more like—she’s been a little … closed to any options that involve directly interfacing with her Stream,’ you reluctantly reveal, remembering the conversation about you—or any Admiral that wasn’t her previous one—poking in there like it was yesterday. ‘I mean, she really wants to get back on active duty, but I don’t think that we’ve come to the point where any of the choices are … favourable, sir.’

He grumbles.

‘Dead ends all round, huh?’

>‘Well, we haven’t talked to Houshou yet … maybe I can see if she has anything to say about it?’
>‘Maybe Yuubari has something else up her sleeve … maybe Akashi. They’re both miracle workers by occupation, anyway.’
>‘A Shaman might help—if we’re able to get one on-base … or on our good side.’
>‘I suggest we keep her doing what she’s doing. Maybe there’s an off-chance it’ll end up working.’
>‘I actually think a Simulated Override might be calculated enough a risk, personally.’

‘Well, we haven’t talked to Houshou yet,’ you offer, ‘maybe I can see if she has anything to say about it?’

The Admiral frowns, looking thoroughly puzzled.

‘Houshou?’

‘She was part of that involving little experiment the Admiralty ran to see if KanMusu could be Admirals and work autonomously,’ you follow-up, if a little hesitantly, ‘plus, it wouldn’t be the first time she’s had to drop a lecture or a demonstration down … and if nothing else, it doesn’t hurt to ask—’

The Admiral raises a hand, cutting you off before nodding tightly.

‘If you think that that’s the best course of action for now, then by all means take it—nothing’s got a closed door to it as far as her recovery and return to active duty is concerned … but that goes the same for the extreme scale of the options we have’—you wince at that, a small part of you had been hoping that the Admiral would be a lot more generous—‘so if you’re willing to explore what you have to get Iowa back on her feet, I’m leaving it up to you … but know that my concern is getting the forces that we have back to peak efficiency as soon as possible, and if all else fails, well … you know the rest, Commander.’

You frown—the Admiral’s words sound a little strange to you. As if they were more of a formal tack-on rather than a serious warning of the consequences of failure.

He just didn’t seem like the type to pull that kind of thing off.

Not that you were willing to test it, either way.

You steel yourself for the coming dressing-down and rejection. The Admiral’s eyes are focused on the wall of his office, his form steady and laboured, but otherwise focused. You clear your throat, stepping forward; Murakumo had told you about her plan to organize a proper training regime for close quarters combat—specifically with melee weaponry—and warned you that the Admiral would need some convincing … especially with every KanMusu with a schedule tighter than Houshou’s—

‘Sir, I’d like to talk to you about certain extra-curricular activities a member of my Division is seeking to propose … with your approval.’

He raises an eyebrow.

‘Oh?’

Murakumo,’ you begin, your voice as clear as you could manage it to be, ‘she wants to put on a weaponry introduction class … a dojo, so to speak. She feels like … a lot of the KanMusu are too reliant on the standard technique and their summoned arsenal over improvising outside of their … comfort zone’—or at least, that’s what you think Murakumo had intended to say about it—‘and she wanted to introduce an … introductory class to open them up to more options on the field over just cannons and CQC. I mean, I know that’ll mean that it’ll cut into a lot of the schedules, sir, but—’

‘Go ahead,’ he nods, ‘I’ll write out the bulletin first thing tomorrow. See who’s interested.’

‘Wait, what?’

The Admiral turns to you, confused.

‘What?

‘You just said yes without even …’

‘Yeah, and … ?’

‘You’re just going to give your approval like that?’ you gesture to the collective of nimrods behind the computer screen—and for a few dedicated fellows, their phone screens—that made up the neurons of your brain. ‘You’re not even going to give the Questers a chance to roll the dice or something to convince you that it’s a good idea? At all?’

‘No,’ he answers, steady and even, ‘because it is a good idea—a proper training course on melee tactics and armaments isn’t a bad suggestion at all. With the amount of skirmishes KanMusu get into, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to fall back on something that didn’t need a reloading timer. I’ll try to re-organize the schedules to see if the girls can get a proper period up to squeeze in some practice … but the rest’ll be up to you and Murakumo to sort out. I can help endorse it, but you and Murakumo are going to have to properly get it off the ground yourselves.’

You sigh, feeling a little relieved … but somehow disappointed at the same time, ‘I thought that it would’ve taken a lot more than just me telling you that I was running a class.’

The Admiral laughs heartily, his arms crossing over his chest.

‘Commander, did you think that someone dropping in a re-shuffling of a timetable for accommodation of a new program is something that I’m not used to handling on a secondly basis?’

He had you there.

‘Sir, I couldn’t help but notice that someone just left before I came in,’ you give the door a jab, as if for emphasis. ‘Who was that?’

The Commander’s expression takes a stone-like quality, squaring his shoulders and lightly grumbling, throwing you a glance before shifting from his position by his table to his ashtray, setting his pipe down before dropping himself back into his chair. You don’t say a word—if the Admiral’s body language was anything to go by, he didn’t look welcome to any line of questioning … and the man who just left, whoever he was, didn’t look like a bundle of joy to talk about either. That skull-like, cratered face, while not as uncanny as the Court Representative’s, intimidate you by aesthetic alone; even looking at him seemed to sour the atmosphere; and if his less-than-pleased expression had been anything to go by, anything that had transpired between him and the Admiral probably had an end result that wasn’t particularly in his favour.

The Medallion gave you hints, however … vague as they were. He was either a Vassal—he didn’t have the necessary escort to be counted above that class—or a Vassal’s right-hand man, but the question that wracked you wasn’t so much as who he was than it was on just why he was here … and how the Admiral had connections to the ruling class of Taiyouga.

First the Count of Tohno, now this.

The Admiral leans back in his chair, his expression unchanged.

‘Personal business, Commander,’ he finally replies, tiredly, but with a sense of finality and discouragement.

You open your mouth, unsure on whether to press the issue to sate your curiosity … or to just leave things be.

‘I’m sorry, sir, I didn’t mean to pry.’

The Admiral nods.

Sensing that you had worn out your welcome with that query, you fall into a salute, which has him standing up and returning the sentiment. No other words are spoken between the both of you as you take your leave, the cold air of the late afternoon assaulting you with that first step into the outside world. You throw a glance over your shoulder, giving one last gesture with your head towards your Admiral, before closing the door.

Staring at the busy scene of men, women and KanMusu at work … you decide to get a move on with the rest of your day.

After two days of sleep, a nap just wasn’t on the cards.
