You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Several hours had passed since your little sparring match with Amy, and they were a rather hectic few hours.

First, the Gladius finally linked up with the main fleet and Dorothea's flagship, the Battle-class SDF Pacifica, latest in the long line of spaceborne supercarriers that traced back directly to the venerable SDF-1 standing watch over Earth.

And as usual for ships of her class, the Pacifica absolutely dwarfed the rest of the ships in the fleet by several orders of magnitude. Even the Gladius, which would be considered a full size carrier in any other fleet was merely an auxiliary support carrier to Pacifica, along with her sister ship O'Bannon.

In the backdrop you could see the lush tropical world of Nabaal, of which the sector was named after, chosen for colonization due to its high water content and extremely fertile soil, making it a perfect environment for the production of organic products. Already you could see the clump of glittering lights marking where the colony ship had first set down, and dozens of smaller clusters were additional cities had been founded over time.

It was actually a very pretty sight.

You decide that first things first, you needed get to the briefing. No sense being late or anything. You make good time despite being new to the ship. Thankfully, the layout of the Pacifica was very similar to Gladius, though, of course, just larger.

The briefing room was located near the bridge, which naturally was where all the officers would be.

You notice a few familiar faces already present. Dorothea was sitting at the head of a large, circular holotable, legs crossed and surveying the scene from her command chair like some sort of queen. Lara gives you an enthusiastic wave and motions for you sit down next to her.

You also notice two rather unfamiliar men and a woman. One of them looked to made purely out leather, his skin wrinkled and tough from obvious hard labor. The simple orange jumpsuit he was wearing signified he was a mechanic or technician of some type. Though the fact he was present meant he was rather special in some way.

The other man was at the tail end of middle age, though already balding slightly. He was wearing a NUNS uniform similar to Dorothea, but you can tell that was from the Colonial Defense Force rather than the Spacy the rest of you were part of.

The final person was a woman with long, flowing black hair and pale skin. The regal way she sat made her seem more royal and refined than even Dorothea. She simply gives you a polite smile as your gaze falls on her.

There were two faces distinctly missing-

"Sorry about that!" Karla says with a smile as she strides through the door, Amy reluctantly following behind her. "Had to pull our star out of her room!"

"That's fine. Let's get seated so we can proceed." Dorothea sighs.

Karla wastes no time taking seat opposite you, next to the mystery woman. Amy pauses before shuffling over to your side of the table and taking a seat next to you. Nobody seems to pay this any mind except Karla, who eyes Amy's movements with her predatory eyes, no doubt drinking in every action and bit of information. Gave you the creeps.

Amy merely sits there and fidgets nervously.

"Hey, Kid." You nod to Amy.

"H-hey." Amy mumbles back.

"Now that everybody is present we can start this briefing." Dorothea speaks up, grabbing everybody's attention. "This will be the 7th Tactical Sound Unit's first official briefing. I'm sure all of you know, but we have found our second pilot, Captain Harry Neumann."

You nod to the others respectfully at the mention.

"Captain, these three here are Rutger, our chief mechanic."

The leathery, ancient mechanic nods to you.

"General Freyberg of the Nabaal Colonial Defense Forces."

"Captain." Freyberg says politely.

"And President Dupont, the elected NUN representative of the Nabaal Cluster."

"It's a pleasure to meet you." The President says, her voice soft and sweet.

"General Freyberg and President Dupont will be our primary colonial contacts." Dorothea explains. "But most of our operations will be taking place in the space outside of the Nabaal Cluster itself. If fighting were ever to make its way inside the cluster, the situation would already be dire."

"Indeed." Freyberg nods. "Though it's safe to say that the Fleet is holding?"

"The defense lines are still stable. The Zentradi have been quiet for the most part." Dorothea explains as she hits a button.

The holotable then activates, showing the entire galaxy. Blue spheres marked NUNS controlled space while large swathes of red indicated areas of confirmed Zentradi activity. The hologram then zooms in to the tiny marble that was the Nabaal Cluster, which you note was nearly surrounded on all sides with red like an ominous storm cloud.

"As you can see, the Zentradi fleets in the area have becoming moving perilously close to our borders." Dorothea continues. "Due to the extreme disparity in numbers, and our distance from NUNS core systems, it's been decided to activate a Tactical Sound Unit to act as a force multiplier."

"Do they really think one TSU can hold back all that?" You frown.

"Believe me, I would liked another battlefleet or two, but this is all we're going to get for the foreseeable future." Dorothea grimaces. "Agent Weiss, would you like to brief him on why exactly the Zentradi are so focused in this area?"

"Gladly." Karla smiles and presses a key on the table.

The holotable briefly flashes CLASSIFIED in threatening red letters until Karla types in a code, and the hologram zooms in further.

"We believe the three Zentradi fleets in the area, codenamed Leviathan, Tiamat, and Surtur, are battling over a currently inactive Protoculture facility hidden somewhere in dark space, the void in between star systems."

"A Protoculture facility?" You frown.

"Most likely an automated factory the Zentradi use to sustain their fleets." Karla's smile widens. "Obviously a great prize for whichever fleet seizes it. It would effectively cement in their position in this sector and serve as an obvious staging point for an attack on the Nabaal Cluster."

That really did sound serious.

"So I assume our ultimate objective is to blow this thing?" You ask.

There's an awkward silence. Freyberg and Dupont look a bit uncomfortable. Dorothea's face goes into stoic mode, and Karla's smile remains in place.

"Current orders from NUNS High Command is to explore the possibility of seizing this facility." Karla says simply.

"Ah, of course. Why would I think otherwise, if not for the fact that it would be like kicking three hornet nests at the same time?" You sigh as you lean back in your seat. Typical military politics. If there was one perk to Special Forces, it was that you didn't have to worry about this shit.

"Well, Command believes that the Zentradi would continue to focus their efforts on the facility rather than look to Nabaal." Karla grins. "And if the intel that it's an automated factory turns out to be true, then would vastly improve our strategic situation. Isn't that right, Admiral?"

"Indeed." Dorothea says, almost reluctantly.

Suddenly, there's a warning klaxon and the room lights immediately turn red.

"Bridge, what's the situation?" Dorothea asks, no doubt through some sort of communicator.

"Admiral, Zentradi battlepods have been spotted in Sector 2!" A voice on the intercom replies.

"Task two Ghost squadrons to-" Dorothea starts but is interrupted by Karla.

"Admiral, perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity to see how our two star pilots would handle it?" She says smugly.

"We were supposed to run them through some simulations first." Dorothea sighs. "At this point I'd rather not take the risk."

"We can handle a few Zentradi." You assure her and turn to you wingmate. "Right, Lara?"

"Hell yeah, we can!" Lara whoops and then catches herself, considering the company present. "Um, sorry about that, Admiral."

"It's all right." Dorothea sighs and turns to Rutger. "We do have a Valkyrie ready for Captain Neumann, correct?"

"Hell yes we do!" The mechanic nods. "Hot off the fabrication line! Didn't even get the chance to put any paint on it yet!"

"Well, I guess paintjob will have to wait." You get up from your seat.

"Um, good luck out there." You hear Amy mumble as you pass her. You only have time to give an acknowledging nod before jogging off to the hangar with Lara.

"Haha, our first combat op together!" Lara laughs as she slaps you on the back. "Excited, Cap?"

"I suppose you could say that, yeah." You nod

The two of you quickly get changed into your standard issue flightsuits and jog out to the hangar. Already, the area was a cacaphony of noise and movement as techs get your two VF-19s ready to launch. Lara heads over to her blue and red Valkyrie while you head to the bone white plane. Like Rutger said, it was so new it didn't have paint yet. You drop into the cockpit and start getting your bearings. The controls were the same as you remembered. No issue there.

"We slapped on a Fold booster so you two can get into the action quicker." Ruger says over the radio as your canopy closes. "The Admiral's already deployed Ghost drones ahead of you, but they'll leave the heavy lifting to you."

"Got it." You nod and glance over to Lara's Valkyrie. "You ready?"

"Always!" Lara chuckles.

The signal in front of you goes green and you hit your throttle just as the catapult engages. Both of your planes surge forward.

"S-sending operation coordinates to you now!" You hear a unfamiliar and timid voice squeak over the comms. You check your screen and see it's coming from the Pacifica bridge. "Good luck!"

Your Excalibur immediately aligns itself to the proper approach vector, leaving you to just engage the fold drive..

A flash of rainbow light, and you find yourself facing a loose debris field of rock and derelict ships. Immediately, your HUD lights up with blue squares marking friendlies. There was Lara, of course, and a number of Ghost drones keeping their distance. In front, you could see unmanned sensor stations littering the debris field, the first line defense for the colonies.

"Got 'em on my scopes!" Lara announces.

"Number?"

"Mmmm, four, I think? Maybe more. The debris ain't helping."

You pause to think for a moment. It would probably be easy to flush the Zentradi out into open space, where you could use the room to leverage your Excalibur's speed and long range armament. Then again, you could try and get the drop on them in the debris field. Your GERWALK and BATTROID modes were meant for close combat of that nature, after all...

"Let's flush them out in the open." You grin. "I'm in the mood for some target practice right now.

"All right!" Lara laughs. "All right, I'll do the honors, then."

You glance to the side and see the weapons bays on Lara's Excalibur flip open, and a flurry of micromissiles scream out, twisting and spiraling as they home in on their targets. You watch as the missiles disappear into the debris field and explode. Whether they actually hit their targets or not didn't matter. They just needed to scare the enemy.

And scare them they did indeed. Almost immediately, you see four standard Zentradi battlepods. Well, the official designation was Regulds, but no pilot ever actually bothered calling them that.

However, you're caught a little off guard when you see a fifth battlepod, a tactical scout version. No doubt they were probing NUNS defenses.

"Lara, handle the small fry, I'm going after the that scout!" You announce as you push your throttle forward.

The scout seems to detect your sudden acceleration and turns tail.

"Roger that! I'll keep your back clear!" Lara says as her Excalibur picks up speed to match yours. More missiles launch but the battlepods have already scoped you out as the bigger threat, their laser cannons swiveling to track you.

You prepare to take evasive maneuvers, but all you see is a flash of blue and red as Lara's Excalibur closes in, spitting missiles and gunfire. Three of the battlepods are caught completely off guard by the speed and ferocity of Lara's attack, exploding instantly to swarms of micromissiles. The fourth battlepod proves to be a bit quicker witted, boosting away from the carnage as it fires its lasers wildly.

But Lara was having none of it. She continues her acceleration and just when it looks like she's about to ram her nose into the battlepod, rapidly switches to Battroid mode and punches the front of the battlepod in, undoubtedly crushing the Zentradi pilot inside.

Jesus, where'd she learn to fly like that?!

However, in all the chaos, the scout had managed to slip back into the debris field. Damnit.

"Go on, Cap!" Lara tells you. "Don't let him get away!"

Damn, chasing that scout in the debris field would be a tall order. Going in using plane mode would be faster, but extremely risky. High speeds in such a clustered space was asking for a collision. Using Gerwalk mode would be more ideal, but that scout had a head start on you...

You Excalibur shrieks as it weaves through the debris field, sensors constantly whining and screaming collision alerts as the space gets more and more congested. However, you just tune it out. You knew what you were doing as you roll and swerve, making sure to always keep a lock on the scout.

The Zentradi scout desperately tries to stay ahead of you, leaving back and forth around debris in an attempt to shake you and break your lock. However, deliberately sticking so close to those hazards was pretty dangerous.

With a bit of a grin, you pull the trigger on your guns, letting loose a burst of autocannon fire. You watch the tracers lance out, and as expected, the scout dodges, maneuvering thrusters flaring brightly.

And while the emergency maneuver was successful in avoiding your attack, it also carried the scout right into the path of a rogue asteroid, smashing the battlepod flat before exploding.

"Splash one scout pod." You announce.

"Nice one! Didn't even have to hit him!" Lara laughs.

"Good job out there." Dorothea's voice buzzes on the comms. "The Ghosts can handle things from here. Return to base."

"Now? But their carrier's gotta be close!" Lara whines. "If we move fast we can bag that, too!"

"As I said, the Ghosts can handle things from here." Dorothea sighs.

"Hey, you wanna go after too, don't ya, Cap?" Lara asks you, her Excalibur waggling its wings.

"Let's head back, Lara." You say as you swing your Excalibur around. "We've done our job."

"Awwwwwww." Lara whines like a spoiled child. "All right, I'll follow your lead, then."

A short fold jump later and you're back at the fleet, angling for a landing back on the Pacifica. Landing, was of course, routine.

"So, what do you think about it?" Rutger asks as you climb out of your cockpit. "She's still pretty fresh so we didn't exactly have a chance to break her in..."

"Controls feel a bit stiff. Not quite as responsive as I'd like." You remark. "The control stick kind of jams a bit so you can't transition into the next maneuver quite as smoothly."

"Right, I'll get that checked then." Rutger nods. "We'll also get around to painting this thing. You got anything in mind?"
