This bed feels like heaven, and you know beds. You’ve slept in one of the finest beds money can buy for most of your life. Sheets soft enough to work its way between your hair follicles and a mattress that supported every part of you that touched it and practically swallowed the rest of you. The bed at Beacon had been a very different experience. Like sleeping on a wooden board in comparison, but a part of you appreciated that. It made it so much easier for you to get up in the morning, to take charge and lead your team, even if it was just to the cafeteria for a few bowls of cereal and an orange. But this bed, one you found in some three-star hotel, may be the best. Well, not really. It was alright. You just wanted an excuse not to get up.

No helping it, though. You have important things to do. You sit up with a sigh and a pop in your back and take in the scene before you. Penny is still standing exactly where she had been when you fell asleep. That trick had weirded you out the first couple of times, but she had done it enough in the dorm that you were used to it. She gives you a small, innocent smile. You’re pretty sure she’s faking it.

The rest of the room seems normal until you get to your hostage. Neo is asleep, thankfully, snoring quietly to herself even as her head rolls uncomfortably off her shoulders, in a way that will surely hurt her neck when she wakes up. Her chair is also upside down, pinned to the wall by a set of familiar looking blades. You trace along the handles until you spot a small white line coming from each. The sun is in just the right position for you to follow them all back to Penny’s hands, hidden behind her back. Her smile grows and her eyes widen. You can’t help but sigh again. You’ve got a lot to handle, and not much time to do it. Where are you going to start?

You run some water over a comb and get it under control. You grunt in frustration as you have to fight with one last resistant strand of hair, and as you do, Penny leans around the door frame. “Whitaker?” she asks, “What are we going to do with her?”

For some reason, you’re reminded less of a “sunny” bright and more of a “gleaming off a knife blade” bright.

The receptionist watches you go with wide eyes and a blush instead. She really needs to lay down, it’s messing with her head.

Once you get back to the room, you knock on it with your foot. Penny lets you in, and you see Neo blinking the sleep out of her eyes and barely opening her mouth to yawn. You hand Penny’s plate to her and she plops onto the foot of your bed. Then you meet Neo’s eyes. She’s undecided between visually pleading at you and devouring the plate in your other hand with her eyes. It must have been a while since she last ate. You doubt she scarfed anything down before sprinting through the back alleys of Vale. It would’ve given her a cramp.

“Relax,” you tell her, “I got three plates, didn’t I?” Neo takes a moment to observe both you and Penny, as if she were counting the amount of food between you both to make sure you were telling the truth. She shrugs and nods at the same time, as best she can, to mime “I guess” at you while Penny was busy eating. Then you look at her wrists, still strapped to the chair. That was going to make eating difficult.

You grab the twin chair to the one Neo is currently tied to and pull up a set beside her. Setting your plate on the floor beside you, you grab your fork and cut a bite out of Neo’s waffle. You jab the fork into it and hold it up to Neo. You probably should have looked at her before now. It would have given you a better idea of what made her pull as far away from you as possible, a look of panic on her face. “What?” you ask, “I’m not going to untie you. You tried to stab me. If you’re want to eat something, this is how you’re going to.”

Neo seems to grimace at the idea, looking nervously over your shoulder. You turn to look behind you and see Penny, frozen with a bit of her own waffle still dangling from her lips, the rest probably contributing to her puffed up cheeks. She’s staring twin holes into Neo. You shrug at her, you’re not sure what Neo’s problem is either, before turning back towards your prisoner. “Are you hungry or not?” you ask, perhaps more aggressively than you meant to. Your arm is getting tired.

Neo nibbles on the end of the fork, never breaking eye contact with Penny as she does. The two of them eventually turn their attention back to their food and pick up the pace, though you did notice more than a few wide eyed glances between the two of them when they thought the other wasn’t looking. It’s as if each of them expected the other to pounce as soon as they dropped their guard. It seems like an odd amount of tension for breakfast, but then the scene you woke up to, as well as Penny’s aggression the night before, hits you like a ton of bricks. That is… Quite frankly a suspicious amount of animosity and nerves between two people who just met. And why does Penny know sign language?

“Nothing!” Penny squeaks. “She isn’t saying anything important at all, it’s just gibberish!” Neo’s laughter causes her chair to tip over, but it doesn’t seem as though she minds. You’re getting sick of not knowing what’s so funny. Well, if it’s something to laugh about, it probably wasn’t that important anyway.

If getting her in while she was sleeping was so easy, it’d be idiotic not to try the same strategy to get her out. There were a few issues to work out. Last time, she had been exhausted by fighting you. Today she had done nothing but sit in an uncomfortable chair and eat. It’d take much longer for her to finally nod off, and even if she did, it probably wouldn’t be the near-comatose state she was in when you brought her here.

You briefly entertain the idea of tiring her out but decide against it. Letting her go just to try and beat her again seemed arrogant. You had no idea of you could win. You’d like to talk about it with Penny, but it seemed like a bad idea, considering Neo would hear everything you said. So instead, you send her a text on her scroll.

“We need to talk about moving her. Text back, but try not to look like you are.”

You can’t put the scroll down before a response comes.

“Okay!”

You look up at Penny, still silently glaring at Neo. Her scroll wasn’t in her hands.

“Who is this?” you ask, and once again, the response is instant.

“It’s Penny! I have connected directly to my scroll, so that we may communicate in secret!” You smile. Clever thinking. You really need to dig into what Penny’s full capabilities were beyond combat. It seems as though Dr. Polendina included an extensive array of utility features. Still, better safe than sorry.

“Tell me how many fingers I’m holding up,” you send, lifting two. She responds correctly, and you repeat the process a few more times to be sure. Once you are, you explain your plan.

“We’re going to move her back to Beacon tonight. Less chance of being spotted by anyone who’d be looking for her. Junior’s gang may want revenge, and she may be wanted by the police for entirely different reasons. We need her asleep when we move her, to keep her from running. Do you have any ideas?”

It takes a few seconds for the response to come. “She has already proven willing to consume what we provide her. Perhaps you could hide sleeping medication in her dinner?”

That was… Pretty underhanded, especially coming from Penny. It made sense. A lot more than just clubbing her over the back of the head. “Do you have any money to buy some?”

“No need,” she replied, “I have already asked Weiss to retrieve a supply I brought from home.” Your heart jumps a bit, and then you swallow. She had left in a hurry last night, Weiss and Blake may not know where you’d been the past day and a half…

“Penny, did you explain the situation to the rest of the team first?”

“Of course.” Whew. That’s one less thing to worry about. Nothing left to do but wait for Weiss to show up, and for nightfall. There was still one question you wanted to ask…

You heave a mental sigh. This is just one of those things your sister will have to get over on her own. You’ll be busy paying for the holes Penny put in the wall.

You untie Neo and pick her up in a bridal carry once again, ready to brave the night with two-thirds of your teammates.

It didn’t feel as though she thought you were incapable, more that she was perfectly aware that she could remove a threat before it became one. Now that you think of it in those terms, it sounded much more… Morally ambiguous. You still haven’t spoken with her about leaving her prisoner in such a state.

Once your back on the plateau Beacon rests on, you and the girls hurry as quickly as you can towards Ozpin’s office. You’re not sure where the Headmaster spends his time otherwise, and you weren’t looking forward to tracking him down if he wasn’t there. You’re only a few steps from the elevator when a strict voice stops you all in your tracks.

“Where exactly do you think you’re going?” You can almost hear the bone in your neck creaking as you slowly turn towards Ms. Goodwitch. She’s only just begun to step outside an office you don’t recognize, several folders tucked under her arm, and she’s fixed the three of you (and the unconscious girl in your arms) with a diamond-hard glare. “You’ve been under an incredible amount of pressure from criminal elements during your time at this school, Mr. Schnee, and I am not unsympathetic. In the future, I trust you will come to a member of the staff immediately, should something like this happen again.” You can’t nod fast enough, and soon after, you’re dismissed and return to your room.

Blake seems uncomfortable when you enter. Glad to see you alive and well, but certainly uncomfortable. It can’t have been easy sitting here and waiting for an update. You’d devote time to reassuring her, but after the talk with Ms. Goodwitch, all you want to do is crash face first into your uncomfortable wooden-board bed and sleep like the dead. So you do.

The best place to speak to Ruby would be in private, and the best place to do that would be the armory. Everyone had spent a decent amount of time in there, no one wanted to run out of bullets their caliber, but Ruby had proven to be just as obsessed with the place as she had been your first day on campus.

You had little doubt that Crescent Rose was one of, if not the, most well kept weapon at Beacon. It was high-maintenance, but Ruby was willing to put the hours in to keep it in working order. You respected that, even if you thought Ruby could stand a certain amount of downgrading. You aren’t sure she even uses half the things that scythe can do. It, in addition to taking up a large chunk of her schedule, made her very easy to find in a private location where most people would only spend the bare minimum amount of time.

Sure enough, she’s there now, mumbling to herself as she picks at the innards of her weapon. Her trademark hooded cloak was hung, delicately, on the mounting for some form or war hammer or battleaxe that currently sat empty. You had only just walked in and the heat was getting to you. She would’ve passed out from heatstroke if she had kept in on. You consider simply walking up and talking to her, but you’d like to have some sort of idea of what you want to SAY before you blurt out something stupid. After all, this is a delicate matter.

You glide towards her. She doesn’t look up. She must have heard you come in. You lean in, absent-mindedly noting that she seems to be checking the bottom segment of the scythe's handle. “More up-” An incredibly loud yelp cuts you off and echoes off the walls as Ruby jumps, rattling the tools she had set aside. Oh. You had your mouth almost right next to her ear.

You aren’t entirely sure it had been your fault. The floor in here was concrete and your boots aren’t soft. You certainly had heard to echoes of your footsteps, but Ruby must have been too far into her own work. Ruby whips around and relaxes when she sees you. “Oh! Whit, I didn’t hear you come in.” You give her a smile that you hope comes across as more amused than strained.

You flick your eyes back towards her project and ask your question, “More upgrades?” Ruby grins and practically twirls back towards her work. You’re not sure how she did it while sitting down. “Yeah, I’m trying to see if I can fit another blade on the bottom of the shaft, another sweeping blade instead of the stabbing one I have there now, but it looks like I’m gonna have to move around a lot of the mechanisms to make room for the spring and lock mechanisms and I just hope that doesn’t mean I have to expand the chasing again.” You think you got all of that, even though she had let it all go in one breath.

“That’s… Nice,” you state simply, not trusting yourself to offer a real opinion lest you end up getting dragged into an endless conversation about it. Honestly, the mechanisms that Langerdorn uses to lock itself in place as a battleaxe would probably solve Ruby’s problem quite handily, but that’s not as important as what you’re here to talk about.

Sure.

From #1 is a long spear, with a very large blade for its size. The blade seems to be a single piece, but there's still a distinct line along the center on both sides. I've always pictured the blade as a tall pentagram, but that's a bit liquid, feel free to do whatever. It's about 7-8' long in my head.

Form #2 is the battleax. Same handle as #1, but the blade has split into two separate blades and slid backward. They are almost exactly the same shape as #1's blade, just in a different position. The inner workings of the split are not visible, as the mechanisms that lock the head of the spear together are also locking the ax
heads into place.

#3 is the rifle. The shaft of the melee weapons has widened considerably, as well as shortened. This form is only about 2' long. The barrel opens at the bottom of the shaft, with the grip and trigger mechanism being closer to the head. The blades have shifted again, now forming a very large handguard around the trigger.

It's pretty fluid, this is just how I picture it when I have to describe how the changes between forms are happening. Assume everything I didn't mention is up to you, and everything I did is changeable if it makes no fucking sense visually.

It seems your approximation on the size of the parts Ruby would need was… Not exactly great. You had based your guess of the numbers of the OTHER parts Ruby had been using. Size 14 spring, size 13 rotators… It hadn’t been that big of a stretch to say the 11’s that Langerdorn used would work. Unfortunately, you had failed to take into account that Ruby tooled her own parts and, thus, had an entirely different measurement system.

That, in an of itself, wouldn’t have been a problem. The problem was that you had helped her install them. It had been a tight fit, it was supposed to be. But it was too tight because the parts were too large, and now getting them back out again was proving to be difficult. Ruby and you had the strength to rip the parts out, but only if you were both channeling your auras, and at that point, you might as well sprinkle Fire dust in the inner workings and try to blast them loose. The opposite approach had the opposite problem - Ruby wasn’t strong enough to hold the shaft steady OR pry the parts out.

Both of you are soaked with sweat by the time you finally give up. You can barely see Ruby’s eyes, now that her hair is hanging over her face. Ruby find her chair again and you find a clean enough spot on the ground against the wall. Why does your whole body hurt? You only ever used your arms.
