"That's it," the smuggler said, exhaling deeply, his eyes showing the depths of fatigue he'd been put through lately. "That was our best chance of stopping the Emperor and we blew it." He leaned on a bulkhead in one of Home One's corridors after the emergency meeting of the provisional council after the disastrous Battle of Dac.

Beside him, the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, no less tired, but perhaps more composed, attempted to comfort his friend. "Han, we did our best. We gathered everything we could to stop him."

Han sighed, "I know," he resisted the urge to call Luke 'kid', Jedi Masters were deserving of a bit more respect. "You and your Jedi did more than anybody could ask, but it wasn't enough."

Luke thought back to the despair he'd felt as the remains of their assembled fleet was forced to abandon Dac, then the horrific crying out in the force that had come when the Emperor's warships began their genocidal bombardment of the planet.

"There was nothing more we could do," Luke replied.

Han snorted, "Yeah? Tell that to the Admiral. Leia already lost her home, and Ackbar didn't exactly need another reason to hate the Empire."

"We still have the evacuees to worry about," Luke said, "I'm thinking there's plenty of room to settle on New Alderaan should they want to."

Han shrugged, "I think the climate may not agree with them, a little too dry, besides, I heard Mintooine was taking in most of them. The damage done to Dac wasn't permanent, they'll be able to return someday." Han sighed again. "Things are looking bad, Luke."

"Things have looked worse," Luke assured him, "Or don't you remember the first Death Star? We toppled an Empire, Han. No one said it would be easy."

Han nodded and collected himself, "Right. Well look, I'd better get back to Leia and the kids. All this fighting has her worried we'll need to go underground again. She's looking into potential base sites. Especially if the Empire is going to destroy worlds that back us."

"Don't worry, Han. We will win. Somehow. "

"I hope you're right."

I allow between ten and twenty minutes for voting depending on the importance of the issue and how divided the vote is. If the vote is tied up, I usually allow an extra five minutes for a tie breaker, and if no one votes, I roll for the tie breaker (The will of the Dark Side).

I always try to incorporate (and encourage!) write ins if they don't violate the spirit of voted decisions, though I may edit or tweak them to fit better.

You are Emperor Palpatine, and you are far from your normal seat of power on Coruscant, or your paradisiacal throne world of Byss. Instead in the galaxy's out rim, you command a small fleet of warships centered on your flagship, the one-of-a-kind Super Star Destroyer Tarkin who had very recently revealed its true firepower by unleashing its bow-mounted superlaser on a Rebel Fleet in orbit of the Mon Calamari homeworld of Dac.

Shortly afterward, the shipyards at Dac, and Dac itself were laid to waste with the devastating firepower your fleet represents.

Now, on the voyage home, instead of passing through the territory of the semi-independent Grand Admiral Thrawn, you opted to travel to the neutral Tion Cluster.

A far-flung cluster of stars and their respective worlds, once kept in the vice-like grip of Imperial Power. Tion has always been independently-minded including aligning with the Separatists during the Clone War. Afterward, however, they did not lean toward the Rebellion as many others did, instead remaining mostly loyal to the Empire while being given a small degree of autonomy. They were now supposed to be allied with the pirate-king Zsinj, but given his recent string of grievous defeats at the hands of Thrawn it seemed they were angling toward handling their own affairs.

Your task force has stopped just outside of Tionese space to announce their arrival to the Tionese authorities and avoid any sort of potential conflict if at all possible.

Of course, your ultimate goal is to return to the Core Worlds, but Tion can serve this need in more ways than one. For one, you may be able to return in grand style and through fear of force, once again bind the Cluster to your Empire, giving a a stable, if remote, bastion of power. Internal Tionese politics may be more complicated than that, however, and surely not all in the Cluster will be pleased to see you return. Instead, you may opt for private contact with the Cluster's leadership which, to your intelligence agents, seems to be a position of power shared between a Moff Gronn, and Lady Valles Santhe, the head of the wealthy Santhe family, primary controllers of the Sienar corporation.

You know Gronn was, at least once, a loyal Imperial governor, if a bit of a stooge, but Lady Santhe is a vibrant, and independent ruler, with a strongly nationalist bent.

There is another option. Instead, you may have some of your most capable followers, Dark Siders, Storm Commandos, and Intelligence Agents, round up those in the Tionese Cluster still loyal to you and seek to establish a new group of leadership.

You can see no reason to rush headlong into Tion not knowing where their loyalties lie. Instead, you sent encrypted messages to the leadership of the Cluster on a high priority Imperial channel, instructing them to meet at the edge of their space in one day.

The Star Destroyer that jumps into the otherwise dead system could be recognized as any Imperial warship save for the golden livery of Tion marking its hull in a few places. You and your apprentice, Lord Cythera are waiting when Santhe and Gronn are connected via holocom.

Santhe is an older woman, wearing the simple garb of the local Tionese. Never one for flashy displays of power, she was nonetheless arguably the most powerful person in the cluster. She sat as head of the Powerful Sienar corporation and it was her purse you filled every time another bulk order for Tie Fighters was placed. Beside her, Gronn was still apparently loyal to the symbols of the Empire at any rate since he wore his Moff's uniform. He was utterly unremarkable, a bureaucrat's bureaucrat. Older, fattening, he had been put in place to stay out of the way of Imperial interests in the Cluster, and keep others out as well.

At the sight of you, their eyes went wide.

"Uh, Emperor!" Gronn exclaims nonsensically, "Your Highness," he gives a low bow, a move Santhe imitates a moment later.

"Quite a surprise," she says, upon straightening up, "To find you so far from the Core."

"Business takes me to all corners of my Empire," you reply.

"I assume the attack on Dac we've gotten word of is your handiwork?" her tone is quiet, respectful, almost reverent, but you can see in her eyes she is very much active, thinking, probing. She studies you first and your apprentice next.

"The fate of the Calamari should not be your concern," you reply, dodging the question. "There are other matters."

"Yes, Highness. Of course," Gronn says, voice perhaps too loud.

"What is it that I can do for you, Highness?" Lady Santhe asks.

You lift a silencing hand, "We can discuss it further in person."

Gronn chews his lip but says nothing, a thin sheen of sweat forming on his forehead.

"In . . .person, Highness?" Lady Santhe asks.

"Unless you think me foolish enough to discuss such matters via holocom."

"No, Highness," Lady Santhe allows, "However, it seems a bit sudden for in person meetings. For a head of state to leave their security behind-"

"I won't be leaving my security," you counter, purposefully misinterpreting who she considered a 'head of state'. "Besides, if it's yourselves you're worried about, bring whoever you wish. We will discuss this in person."

"Y-yes, Highness," Gronn says, bowing again.

"I'll make arrangements at once," Santhe replies.

***

With no other politicians or diplomats on board, you manage to keep the fanfare and protocol to a minimum, Commander Friss and a small detachment of Stormtroopers meet the visiting delegates and ushers them to your throne room where you sit and Cythera stands.

The sight of the vast, empty control center on a warship where space is otherwise at a premium is disarming for both your guests, but not as disarming as your mere presence. Like virtually everyone in the Empire, they thought you dead and gone after Endor, a historical footnote that now lived and breathed.

"Governor Gronn, Lady Santhe, welcome," you say with a knowing smile as the two approach.

"It's an honor, Highness," Santhe says, quickly regaining her composure, Gronn babbling something in return.

"You opted to come without guards, I see," you say.

"I didn't wish to offend your hospitality, Highness," Santhe replies. "Things were different while you were- gone."

"I imagine they were," you say. "Pirates to your north, Warlords to the west, Rebels to the South, and a vast expanse of nothingness to the east."

Santhe gives you a tight smile, "Adversity is no stranger to the Tionese."

"Highness," Gronn says, "It is an honor of the highest degree to have you with us."

"Thank you, Governor," you reply. "I'm pleased to see the Tion Cluster intact after all these years alone."

"What is it you wish of us, your Highness?" Lady Santhe asks.

You smile, "In time, Lady Santhe. It's waited all these years, it can wait a few minutes more." You stand and circle your throne as you speak, "I do want to ask, what has happened to the Tion Cluster while I was gone?"

Gronn opens his mouth.

You hold up a quick hand, "I don't need a basic history lesson, I'm curious what you can tell me that Director Isard cannot."

Gronn closes his mouth with a click of teeth and looks to Lady Santhe.

"The chaos and collapse were hard on Tion," Santhe says, "We’re far from the vital Core regions, which was a blessing and a curse. The Warlords left us alone in their grab for power but . . . "

"But Imperial forces who remained behind after the withdrawal were similarly light. We really only kept the barest minimum," Gronn adds.

"I can imagine those were trying times," you say, your voice oozing sympathy. "How is it you maintained government and order?"

Santhe and Gronn look to one another, mutual dislike flashing across their features. "We made due," Santhe replies. "We made sure to secure the sector fleets with loyal crews. Crews who wouldn't rush back to try to claim the throne."

"We made . . . Deals," Gronn says.

"You made allies," you correct, divining his meaning with the force. "Zsinj."

"With Zsinj we had little choice," Santhe says, her tone hard. "Serve or be absorbed. We managed to provide him a stable base of operations in exchange for a degree of autonomy."

"That changed when Thrawn returned," Gronn says. "With Zsinj being beaten back, Lady Santhe got the independence she sought, but at the cost of reduced protection from Zsinj. Even Teradoc's forces eye us from time to time."

"But we've made due," Santhe replies, her tone firm.

You don't need to ask, you can sense Santhe's fear when Gronn mentions Thrawn. Yes, Zsinj is a pirate, but Thrawn is a conqueror. With Thrawn, Tion might lose its carefully won independence.

"And why have you not made any attempt to return to the true Empire?" you ask, your voice a warning.

"Highness, we would have liked to, in fact, it was discussed at length with my councilors, but we had no way of getting you such a message. The risk was too great! IF Zsinj or Thrawn were to discover . . ." he trails off.

"The Tion Cluster is, as you described it, nestled between mutually competing hostile forces. If we were to return to the Empire, what guarantee could you make us of safety against reprisal?"

It's not a surprise to both of you that we are very split off, and you're right, you are in hostile territory, but Thrawn and I have a mutual understanding. You lean on the throne and nod thoughtfully, "It's obvious that we are quite separated from one another and you're right, you are in hostile territory, but Thrawn and I have a mutual understanding." You fix Gronn and Santhe with a serious look. "I can and will get him to peel his eyes off of your territory with the understanding that you will claim loyalty with the Empire when the time comes. In the meantime, we'll use your territory to launch attacks and operations against our enemies until you can properly be reintegrated."

You can feel the two working the choice over in their minds, Gronn, you know, will side with whichever side is the strongest, but Santhe is her own woman. "Really, it's not your place to ask for such things," you say, "But forces could be spared if necessary. I have a similar arrangement with Moff Tavira, her territory is nearly as separated. Fortunately for you, I don't expect you to return to the Empire yet, but I do need your current cooperation." Again, you look between the two of them, remembering your days as a mere senator form Naboo and the sort of bargaining you would have to take part in. "Does this sound acceptable?"

"I think it-" Gronn is interrupted.

"Highness, Tion is not the Empire, we unfortunately can't make such decisions unilaterally. I'm sure Moff Gronn and his forces pledge fealty to you, but I represent other interests, interests which need to hear from me before any decisions are made."

Her words are concise and clear, but her emotions are turbulent, fearful. She feels trapped, cornered between inexorable interests. Fear for her own business and safety are high but, surprisingly, concern for the Tion cluster ranks highly in her mind. You sense she doubts your claim that Thrawn will bow to your will.

"Perhaps you doubt my claim?" you venture.

Santhe stumbles on her words, "No, Highness. That is-"

"The Empire is stronger now than it ever was before," you say confidently. "Not in raw numbers, but in determination. All the fat has been trimmed, the dead weight burned away, and only the most loyal and capable remain. Thrawn will yield to me."

"I don't doubt that, Highness," she lies with a polite smile. "Provided Tion can promise to help you, what is it you'll have us do now?"

"My priority is to return to Coruscant," you say, "To that end I need to have access to Tion's secure holonet facilities. My own fleet cannot communicate with my Empire without using relays. Relays currently in Rebel hands."

"I'm sure that can easily be arranged," Santhe replies.

"I'll also need supplies for repairs to be carried out on my fleet, several ships were damaged in combat, and we've expended much of our ordinance in battle."

"That," Lady Santhe considers, "may be doable. Though given some of the damage we saw, port facilities will likely be needed and the only dockyard we have capable of servicing Star Destroyers in at the capital in Lianna. A repair tug could be provided, but it wouldn't be able to reverse some of the more serious damage."

"Would Tion be able to spare ships to supplement my escort?"

Gronn speaks up now, "The Tionese Sector Fleet can happily oblige. I can have a pair of Star Destroyers out here in a moment's notice." He puffs his chest proudly.

A pair of Star Destroyers was a trifling amount, but given what you had at your disposal it would have to do.

"How long would the repairs of my ships take at a dockyard facility?" you ask.

Santhe, though an aristocrat, is also a technician at heart. "I'd estimate a few weeks, Perhaps two if we made it a priority job, though this would likely draw more attention to the repair. We could also have a remote shipyard towed outside of our space where we could repair your fleet in private, but that would also take time."

"A tug will suffice," you say, "We only need to keep our ships flying long enough to return."

"I understand," Lady Santhe says with a bow. "I'll have it arranged at once. Now, for the communication facilities," she looks to Gronn, "Governor, I believe there is a secure holonet station on Eibon that will serve the Emperor's needs."

Gronn nods, "Yes. Although . . . Eibon is a heavily trafficked system. A ship like this will attract attention, let alone your fleet. Perhaps we could relay the message for you?"

Doing so would of course allow the Tionese to tap into any transmission you make, though they could likely do that anyway, Still, it would keep your fleet out of prying eyes which might report back to your enemies.

"Otherwise, if you only want to send a simple message, a pre-recorded code cylinder will be enough and we can deliver that to the holonet station," Gronn finishes.

A more secure route allowing you to add your own layer of encryption of course, but it would also prevent real time communication, such a transmission would be one way unless you were to remain and wait for the reply from Coruscant.

"A message cylinder will do," you say.

"I'll make preparations for Onslaught to relay your message to Eibon and the Empire," Gronn says. "And summon your escort."

A glance at your Royal Guards draws them to Gronn's side. "See to it, Governor. Lady Santhe, I'll compose my message and have it delivered to your ship shortly."

"Thank you, Highness."

Now, with Santhe and Gronn gone, it remained to compose your message. "Director Isard, I bring you word of my victory over the Mon Calamari. Their sniveling kind have been driven off of their world and those who could not flee were exterminated, the oceans boiled and the planet sterilized. A rebel fleet and the Dac shipyards were likewise destroyed. I have stopped in the Tion Cluster before making my return journey. I trust you have managed well in my absence."

With the message recorded and relayed to Gronn's waiting flagship, all that must be done now is deciding on a course out of this area. The choice is similar to the one you made previously. You can travel back out the way you came in, passing through what is now Thrawn's territory, or you can travel south, behind and then through Huttspace and Rebel territory.
Each carries unique challenges and threats. Thrawn's route is shorter, but more likely to have you encounter non-Imperial forces in the form of Thrawn's battle groups.

The route through hutt space is much longer, but avoids Thrawn's lines, instead passing through Rebel territory which Intelligence estimates to be greatly weakened after their string of defeats.

So this would be at least Order 152.

As paranoid as it sounds, the reason Thrawn may have invaded that region was to in particular try and catch us on the way back. Considering space is BIIIIIIIG I don't know how well that'd work out but I also know nothing of Star Wars Hyperspace Bullshit Physics.

Palpy knows just about everything. It's a minir detail, but one his on board intelligence agents would brief him on in the event the ships go that way.

For how they're dealing:

badly. They're disorganized, fighting over Jabba's spoils, but an external threat may solidify them around a single leader.

>>1953527
>Where do Onderon and Hapes fall de jure and de facto?

>Onderon
Officially in Rebel controlled space, however after the withdrawal, they are effectively free of any outside influence, not to mention they never officially joined the New Republic.

>Hapes
Officially independent. The last owrd "on the books" is they were a tributary state of the Empire" but in practice, they were never worth bothering. They stayed in their cluster and you stayed out.

> I also know nothing of Star Wars Hyperspace Bullshit Physics
That's all you need to know. Space is BIIIG but in star wars it's Smallll. A hyperspace jump is 99% likely to land you on top of something plot relevant in star wars.

I kid, but in practice yes, Space is much less big in star wars than it should really be.

The Hutts, disgusting creatures though they were, didn't have the unity or the backbone to face you , you would avoid confrontation with Thrawn and instead divert through Hutt space and, perhaps, take the opportunity to sow more confusion among their kind.

It would extend your journey, but so be it.

You have Commander Friss lay in a course as soon as the two Tionese Star Destroyers arrive. You only hope Isard can manage in your absence . . .

this right now in prepartion. I want to make sure that:

A: I do the setting justice and have everything thought out, no "Corellias" in WotR.

B: That I have the mental and physical capacity to run it. My fear is I start it and realize I have no time and drop it OR Dark Empire suffers.

To put it another way: Spooky Girl is NOT delaying WotR, either way that is in the near future. My goal is to wrap Spooky Girl within October and proceed with what I've learned from there. It's not an "either or" situation.

You are Commander Alana Tyrna, and your long wait for excitement is over. After applying to transfer commands, out from under 3rd Fleet and Admiral Lobkin to instead be given a small, but independent command, you'd been officially summoned by Admiral Lobkin to his flagship, the Star Destroyer Dread. In the past, such an occasion would set your heart on edge, the sweet rush of a visit with Lobkin who was attractive to you in more ways than just physical, was a rare treat you'd allowed yourself. Now, you were on edge for a different reason.

In your last conversations with Lobkin you'd come to the conclusion that he was trying to manipulate you, to use you for his own ends, whatever those may be exactly. Regardless, you'd decided you'd had enough of it. Better to make your career on your own than under a superior who you felt treated you like a loyal pet or worse.

His tone had been . . . less than approving when you'd spoken to him over holocom and made him aware of your decision to leave him. He'd often called you his best and most trust worthy commander, his closest ally and maybe, perhaps something more.

Now though.

Now you were to meet him on the bridge of Dread rather than his ready room or the private dining room he had on board.

(1/2)
>>
You'd come without escort and as the doors onto the bridge hummed open, you saw Lobkin standing near the front of the command room, back to the door way, arms crossed in front of his chest, most of his body blocked from view by the field gray cape he wears.

Beside him, a junior officer glanced over his shoulder and caught sight of you. Then after saying something to Lobkin, steps away. Admiral Lobkin looks over his shoulder at you before motioning you over with a wave of a hand, giving you a tight smile. "Commander Tyrna, thank you for coming."

"Of course, Admiral." You come to stand beside him, the two of you facing Dread's forward viewports.

"I've received word from High Command that your application to transfer has been accepted. You'll be taking command of the 1st Independent Raiding Group at Kuat. Congratulations."

"Thank you, Admiral."

Lobkin doesn't look at you as he speaks though his tone is level and calm. "It's a command far from the Core and far from oversight so either High Command has a lot of faith in you, or they want you as far away as possible." He gives you a humorless smile which you return. "Retribution is free to leave the fleet at your earliest convenience, we already have a replacement on route."

A minute of silence passes between the two of you and you prepare to consider yourself dismissed.

"I'm sorry to see you go, Alana. You have more promise than any other officer in the Empire. Leagues more than men like Lennox or Zahn."

His unexpected praise catches you off guard. "Thank you, Admiral."

He turns to look at you, "I hate that I'm letting you go, Alana. I know you've got your mind made up and you can be bloody minded." He fall silent a moment, "Just remember that the bridge between us isn't burned. Not on my end. You're always welcome to return."

"Thank you, Admiral," you say. "Your trust in me is appreciated." No reason to not take a small step to sooth Lobkin's ego, after all you still need allies in the admiralty and hoped you could count Lobkin among them. That said, you couldn't leave without speaking your mind. "Permission to speak freely, Admiral?"

Lobkin raises a curious eyebrow, sizing you up a moment, his face apprehensive. "Granted, Commander."

You inhale deeply through your nose. "Whether you want to agree with my following statement or not, it doesn't change what I feel: I feel as if you were manipulating me." You let the words hang heavy, mild surprise registering behind Lobkin's eyes.

"But," you continue, "I really don't blame you. In a few years, when we are equals, I would very happily revisit . . . this, but as it stands now, I'm too ambitious and intelligent for my own good. I know you understand."

Lobkin looks torn between amusement and anger but settles on the former. "I understand." he chuckles, "You're making a massive mistake." He glances side to side before leaning toward you slightly, "I could have given you everything you wanted if you'd stayed with me."

You allow a nod, "That may be so, but this is the path I've chosen for myself."

Lobkin snorts, "So be it."

You snap your heels together and deliver a crisp salute. "Admiral."

You barely allow his return nod to register before you turn and march off the bridge.

Back on board, preparations are underway to return to Kuat to rendezvous with the new elements of your fleet. You make it a point to visit the bridge of Retribution though you were sure Lieutenant Bastra, your Executive Officer, had the situation well in hand. A small series of jumps through friendly territory was a trivial matter for an experienced Imperial officer.

"Commander Tryna," A soft voice comes from behind you. Lieutenant Zepal, your new tactical officer and resident "gunnery witch". She'd rattled around in darkened gunner stations for most of her career before ending up in the bright, open expanse of a command deck. Her discomfort showed. Already not a physically imposing person by any stretch, Zepal seemed to shrink in on herself. You suspected she'd be more comfortable in the black coveralls and clam-shell helmet of an Imperial gunner.

"Lieutenant, report."

"All of our fighters are accounted for, including the active patrol," she says, squinting at a data pad. "Command of our escort vessels has been transferred to Dread."

"Splendid. Well done Lieutenant, you're a natural."

Zepal looks a little exasperated, "Natural isn't the term I would use, ma'am, but I'm working on it."

"If you do this job even half as well as you handle our guns then you'll make a fine member of the command staff," you reply.

"Th-thank you, ma'am," Zepal replies, "Takes some getting used to."

You nod, preparing to move along.

"But-" Zepal exclaims, "I do appreciate the chance. Really."

"I'm sure you'll live up to my expectations," you say.

"Commander," Lieutenant Bastra calls, "we're ready to make the jump to light speed."

"Very good," you reply.

"Will there be anything further?" Bastra asks.

"I have to contact Captain Tierce, lay in a course to Kuat and standby," you say.

"Yes, ma'am."

***

In your ready room, you call up Tierce's private connection. In minutes, he's lie before you.

"Commander, this is the second time we've said goodbye," He says.

"Temporary, I'm sure. If my subordinate slots weren't full-" you start.

"No problem. I'm sure we'll link back up again at some point. The navy still isn't that big."

"Thank you, Tierce." You allow yourself a small smile, "It seems you're at the top of a small list of people I can trust."

Tierce smiles, "Hey, no one ever said war was easy."

You smile back, feeling sadness that catches you off guard. You leave it unsaid that you never expected it was other Imperials you would have so much difficulty with. "Thank you, Roth."

"Of course. What else are friends for?" Tierce asks. "You've had my back before."

"Well," you push away your emotions. "I have a date at Kuat."

"You'll do great. Knock em dead, Commander."

Looking back at Tierce's smiling, confident face, you are suddenly over taken with fear. You imagined Lobkin, cooling smoking that Cigarra of his while he left Tierce for dead in a fight he was over his head in. Lobkin struck you as the jealous type and he might misconstrue your friendship with Tierce as . . . Something else.

"Roth, you know to be careful, don’t you?"

Tierce looks puzzled, "Yeah, I mean. I'd say so."

You chew your lip a moment, "Just watch out for yourself."

He nods, "If the Rebels and mutineers can't do me in, I don't imagine there's much else that can." He gives you another relax smile. "Goodbye, Alana."

"Goodbye Roth."

Kuat was busier now than perhaps at any point in its storied history of star ship production. You counted no fewer than two dozen fresh Star Destroyer hulls laid down to be fleshed out by teams of workers laboring tirelessly, many of whom were likely non-humans under your father's purview. You expected what you were looking at was the prospective 6th and 7th Fleets, once they were finished of course. Maybe, with luck and skill, by then one of them would be yours.

In addition to fresh construction there was freight traffic carrying materials from foundry and raw metal shipped in from Commenor. Barges loaded with living cargo brought food to the populace or workers for the shipyards from other worlds. You'd said it before, the Imperial Navy was a hungry beast.

You saw other Star Destroyers being repaired and refitted, some suffering damage so catastrophic that only a few years prior they would have been scuttled or left for the Rebels to do with as they pleased. Now they were valuable. Now the Empire had a purpose again.

While this was all very interesting to you, it was not what you came for. No, that lay ahead of you in the form of Three Imperial II Class Star Destroyers and a handful of escort vessels.

The 1st Independent Raiding Group. Your first independent command. You'd done your research on the scant few documents you were provided on the ships and their captains.

Your senior officer is Captain Palvac of the Star Destroyer Sorrow. His career is long and unremarkable, spanning back to the Imperial consolidation of the Out Rim following the Clone Wars. He'd done relatively little. You suspect Lobkin would have said that Palvac was "the perfect officer of the Empire. Loyal and obedient and not very imaginative".

(2/3)
>>
Behind Palvac is Captain Valorum of the Star Destroyer Executrix. In many ways, the ship is more interesting than the man. Executrix was once the flagship of Grand Moff Tarkin. Formerly an Imperial I Class, it has long since been retrofitted as an Imperial II Class. Valorum hails from a high-born family and, like you, is young for his rank. This either speaks of ambition or power, perhaps both.

Lastly is Captain Rence of the Star Destroyer Desecrater. Formerly captain of a Victory class, Rence saw his first real combat against the Rebels late in the war, before the Emperor's death. He was present during the Liberation of Coruscant. His most interesting feature is his birthplace of Bonadan, one of the primary worlds in the far flung Corporate Sector. Strange to find him serving with a navy largely based out of the Core and Deep Core.

As for your mission, you'd read a briefing prepared for you specifically by Grand Admiral Zahn. It seemed your suspicions were true. Enarc was your ultimate destination. A world very near Naboo and just outside of the Outer Rim, it was territory you knew to be governed by Moff Leonia Tavira, who was, in some circles, Grand Moff Tavira. You knew her only by reputation as being an eccentric pirate.

She would be your final contact and briefing point once you arrived at Enarc. Until then you would be meeting your new captains shortly, a golden opportunity to acquaint them with your leadership style. You'd done this before, and would likely do it again.

Yes. THOSE Valorums.

You knew that being that isolated from the Empire proper mean you would have to rely on each other more than ever. One mistake, one misstep could spell certain death.

You try to keep this mentality in focus when you gather your subordinate commanders on board Retribution. Gathered in your conference room you have Palvac, Rence and Valorum, each looking at you expectantly. These are trusted men, men the Naval Board evidently trusts enough to operate under the command of a relative unknown. Palvac, you're surprised to see, has a bit of a rougher edge too him than you'd expect from an Imperial officer. His chin is covered in a thin salt-and-pepper stubble, one of his ears marred by a red scar where it looks to have been victim of a slashing attack. Despite his wild appearance, his eyes are cool and collected and he watches you attentively.

Rence 's hair is shaved so close to his head an so light in color you initially assume him to be bald. He looks uncomfortable, uneasy, which, given his light combat record isn't really surprising. He likely feels outclassed. You remember the sensation from your own early days as Captain of Retribution.

Valorum stands out from the others. Many in the Empire recall Chancellor Valorum with a sort of fondness, the last vestiges of the simpler days of the Republic, before the chaos of the Clone Wars and the austerity of the Empire. You'd never grown up in that tradition. Finnish Valorum was a pompous fool who twiddled his thumbs while the Republic fell. It was only swift action on the part of Padme Amidala and then Senator Palpatine that saved the Republic through its ultimate transformation into the Empire.

(1/2)
>>
Captain Valorum was certainly some kind of close relation to the former Chancellor, especially obvious in his eyes. Unlike the others he has a youthful exuberance to him, almost flamboyant in a way. You're immediately reminded of the late Captain Wei. Like Wei, Valorum is a young, important noble, but instead of Wei's casual cruelty you see entitlement and expectation. The Imperial Navy has always been bloated with useless aristocracy, yourself excepted of course, but some of this was kept in check by the "old guard" of crust Clone Wars era upper officer corps. With that having been culled out by the Rebellion it made room for young upstarts like Valorum and Wei. And, you supposed, yourself.

"Gentlemen, good to have you aboard. I've been told in the past that my reputation precedes me. In a way I hope that's not the case with you. I'm not interested in solidifying any sort of reputation. No, I'm hoping to build a solid team here. Each of us has something to contribute to that, and if we don't work together, we're going to hurt for it." you fix each of them with an intense gaze. "We'll be travelling to Enarc, isolated from the Core and passing through hostile territory on the way."

You sigh, "We'll go over all of the numbers of course, but I want to first and foremost secure the 'human element'. Do any of you have any questions or concerns for me?"

You sit through a long silence.

Do you have any questions or comments for your subordinates?

"I think," you say, feeling a bit like a school teacher trying to coax these men to open up about themselves, "That it would be helpful if we knew more about one another's backgrounds." You look to Palvac, "Why don't you start, Captain Palvac?"

Palvac stares back blank faced for a full second before snapping on a charming grin, "Certainly, Commander." Whether or not this is sarcasm is completely lost on you. "I began my career fighting pirates and Seperatists on the fringes of the galaxy. I'm fairly certain there are a few craters on those worlds named after me. And, unfortunately for the Empire, that's where my career largely stayed. I was a Commander briefly, a Moff even more briefly, and have generally hovered around the rank of captain."

The news of Palvac's other ranks startles you somewhat, if the man ever was a Moff, you can see why he didn't stay one. He seems almost unbalanced in the way that his rough appearance contrasts with a sparkling personality.

"Interesting, a Moff?" you ask.

Palvac nods, "Interim, not long enough for the paperwork to go through, but you learn a bit about governance of backwater worlds when you have to garrison one for years. I learned enough to rely more on words than turbolasers. I guess that makes me a poor Moff." He shrugs.

Valorum snorts, not in derision, but in amusement.

"Captain, perhaps you'd like to tell me a bit about yourself and career?"

He smiles back at you, eyes sparkling. "Do you think that's necessary?" he asks in a prim Coruscanti accent.

"I think it's only fair," you retort.

"Right. Well, I graduated eleventh in my class at the Academy. I helmed a Strike-Class and saw action at Kuat before being granted command of Executrix. I got tired of bumping around on guard duty at Coruscant and applied for a combat command. And here I am," he smiles, spreading his arms. You find his arrogance a bit off putting, but can see that he must be popular with the ladies. A powerful, attractive man, well spoken

(1/2)
>>
"Captain Palvac has an edge over me," Rence says, "I've never been a Moff before," he gives a wan smile. "I fought the Rebels a few times after they started picking up steam. I was lightly involved in the Battle of Corellia," he suddenly looks alarmed, "Not that battle, ma'am." he then looks more alarmed, "Not that it's a problem." he chokes down his words, "I fought for Harssk there, before defecting to the Emperor's forces shortly before his return."

So, your engagement at Corellia was known, something to keep in mind. Maybe your reputation had changed a bit from the "Bloody Baroness". It would be worth knowing.

"Because of our circumstances," you say "I'm curious to know if you have heard of anything about me. Perhaps any kind of rumors that we may be able to dispel or clarify. I find that direct communication is most effective in clearing these things up. Have any of you heard anything like that?"

Rence at once looks uncomfortable, Palvac, surprised, Valorum amused.

"I've heard you kriffed Admiral Lobkin to this ship. Is that true?" Valorum asks, much to Rence's stunned dismay.

You feel hot indignation rise in your chest but you fight it down, instead, fixing Valorum with a withering stare. "Yes."

Your response shocks Valorum, his smile freezing.

"Yes," you say, "I kriffed Lobkin for this ship. I'm just a no account harlot with delusions of grandeur and no skill of her own." You lean forward on your elbows, "I'm just another useless aristocrat like yourself. Any other questions?"

Palvac bursts lout laughing, a deep, booming laugh. "By the Emperor, I like you, Commander."

Rence's petrified expression loosens somewhat and even Valorum ends up laughing. "Fair point, Commander. Here's hoping the two of us can get our act together enough to contribute something meaningful to this war."

You allow a smirk, the tension diffused, "Honestly, Admiral Lobkin protested against me taking this posting, he regarded me as one of his best commanders, rightly or wrongly. Ultimately though, he and I were nothing more than friends."

Valorum, still smiling, looks skeptical but says nothing further.

"Now," you say, leaning back in your seat. "Numbers. We have our four destroyers of course, each of which has an escort of two Strike-class, six Carracks and a Lancer-Class frigate. Already on station at Enarc is a collection of escort ships, raiders, and a trio of Interdictors all centered on a single Victory-class. This represents the sum total of our forces. The ultimate division and organization of them remains to be determined."

"Excuse me," Captain Rence speaks up, "What of Moff Tavira? I was told she has her own forces on site."

It was true, a group of what could charitably be called "Imperial Irregulars" was more accurately described as pirates.

"She has an eclectic concentration of combat vessels." you couldn't bring yourself to call them warships since 'war' was not what they were intended for. "The whole force is centered on the Star Destroyer Invidious." you leave off the part where you received a special document detailing their potentially dubious loyalty from Imperial Intelligence.

It would fall to you to organize this force once you arrived at Enarc, but for now you only had to worry about the core group.

Anything further for your captains?

So you say you don't hate the new movies.

Do you hate the new comics and TV series' at least?
>>
>>1960084
I've learned not to answer these questions lol.
>>
>>1960148
Omg no!

Rebels: I actually like some parts of this in the mid seasons. I was not angered.
Clone Wars: Idk, never watched it, looks bleeeh.
Comics: Nah senpai. I don't read that shit.
Books: Haven't read a single one of the new canon books. I heard Tarkin is good. I've heard others are shit. I read the synopsis of one and said "what." like five times. I prefer Legends. kthx.
>>
>>1960123
That means you like them.

Now I'm really leaving.

I highly recommend it to every one of ya'll

t. the Anon who named Palpatine's Eclipse class Star Destroyer
>>
"We picked it up on approach not just a few minutes ago," Bastra says of the nearing Strike-Class cruiser. "Shortly afterward it began transmitting high-level security clearance. "It's on a priority approach vector."

You purse your lips as you study the non-descript signal and the ship's approach pattern. "From Kuat?"

Bastra shakes his head, "This one comes straight from Coruscant. Not sure who you upset this time." He gives you a half smile.

"You said it's on high-level security clearance?" you say, "Under who's authority?" You long ago learned in the Empire that sometimes the "Who" was just important as the "what".

"Moff Volen," Bastra replies.

"Volen?" the name is familiar to you. Suddenly, this whole situation is familiar. "What do they want?"

Bastra studies the communication channel readout. "They're dispatching a Tie shuttle with passengers. They're insisting on immediate passage to Naboo."

You nod, keeping your face a mask, "I suppose we can't refuse a directive from a Moff. Allow the shuttle. I'll meet the passengers in the hangar."'

***

The Tie shuttle, really just a retrofitted Tie bomber, settles onto the deck in front of you, the whine of its repulsor lifts dying down. A truncated landing ramp extends and, instead of the Shock Trooper detail you expected, a lone, teenage girl debarks, dressed in heavy, ornate robes.

"Duchess Pallopides," you say, giving a shallow bow, "A pleasure to have you on board again."

"Alana. Good to see you." Ederlathh sniffs at the air and gives a baleful look to a nearby tie fighter maintenance crew. "I hope I haven't inconvenienced you too badly, but when I heard you would be transferring to Naboo I simply had to come along. I assumed you wouldn't object."

You notice she gives you no room to object. Behind her is her familiar entourage of droid and veiled hand maiden carrying a few armloads of luggage.

>No military escort this time?
>It's good to have you back, Duchess. Should I prepare your suite?
>So what's the deal with you and Moff Volen anyway?

It's a great alternative to getting high with inhalants. Just one issue can destroy as many brain cells as an entire crate of computer duster!

Too bad Rebels Tarkin is nothing compared to the Tarkin that book and the old EU set up, and the one most people will be exposed to.

I played Doki Doki Literature Club last night and it fucked me up real good.

This looks some wild shit. Now I'm sad that I haven't read this.

>Rebels Tarkin
Yeah well, it's for kiddos. It was much better than I expected but it's not like . . . cinematic quality or anything.

Oh shit, I forgot a picture.

"It's good to have you back, Duchess. Should I prepare your suite?"

"Go ahead," Ederlathh says, already walking past you into the ship, "I'm sure we'll have a lot to catch up on, Alana. The liberation of Naboo is a blessing. It's too bad that woman Tavira was at the head of the fleet instead of you." She shrugs her shoulders, "Still, a win is a win and I'm tired of Imperial Center."

You nod along as you follow the Duchess, wondering how badly though would through any of your plans out of whack.

"Duchess, I do want to remind you that we'll be headed through potential combat zones, this won't be a cruise like it was to Byss."

Ederlathh stops short of the turbolift doors, her small entourage nearly running into you and her from behind. She looks you up and down a moment, "Well, Alana. That's why I expect you to do your job." She lets the words sink in and turns back to the Turbolift, her handmaiden and droid following behind.

You get onto the Turbolift and the doors close behind you. "By the way, Duchess," you say, " I meant to ask, I see you've come without a military escort this time."

Ederlathh shrugs, "Yeah. Not like I wanted them around anyway. A pack of snakes."

You remembered that the last time you'd seen her she'd told you the Shock Troopers accompanying her had in reality been clandestine Intelligence Operatives, apparently at Isard's behest.

"Do you mind if I ask how you managed that?"

Ederlathh, shakes her head, "Wasn't my doing. They just stopped following me. I guess Iceheart has bigger fish to fry that little girls." she looks over at you, "Wouldn't you say?"

You nod agreement, again hoping that Ederlathh behaved herself on this journey or things would get much more complicated than they were already.

I'm out of time unfortunately, I wanted to do a little more but I have real life commitments. In case I haven't mentioned it already, work is blowing up for me so I've been insanely busy, hardly any time to do Dark Empire planning. I've been able to coast a bit on the notes I have done, but I'm concerned about my stress and creativity levels.

Next week the quest is of course still on, next session is gonna be Tuesday at 7 EST (11 UTC). After that week, I take my 1 week break to try to recoop a bit. I'm hoping by after that point work will have slowed down again. If not, I may need to look at restructuring the quest to ensure I've got time for it. That may mean going from 3 sessions to 2 sessions per week. Of course, it may be sharing those two sessions with 2 different quests by then.

My #1 priority is to keep Dark Empire going and reduce the impact my IRL bullshit has on you guys so I appreciate you bearing with me.

All that crap out of the way: Thanks for playing guys! I had a blast and I'm hoping you are too.

Next time we'll probably do Palpatine and the Hutts, but we'll see what I can plan out.

Sorry for the hurt. I don't want to launch into an Arc I don't have time to finish. I hate awkward cuts.

But thanks for playing!
