You, Sheik, and Viol finally arrive back at Viol’s shop, the merchant carrying the thief’s bag inside as you look over the item you assume to be the Ring of Ancients. The dulled color of the object isn’t the most encouraging thing you’ve seen as of late, but the fact that you’ve recovered it is at least a step in the right direction.

You spot Aveli do a little stretch. “Hey Z, Sheik, Purple Guy.”

“Viol.” the merchant corrects.

She rests her chin on her hands as Viol places the bag down. “Oooh, big haul?”

Sheik looks to you, the cat perched on her shoulder. “So it would seem. Are you okay, Princess?”

“I shall be fine.”

“What all happened over there?” Aveli questions spotting the broken sword among the loot, examining it for a second. You all give her a quick rundown, taking note of the phases of the moon the cat showed you, with the speculation on the significance of it. You further note the arrival of the masked thief, who was almost certainly working for the Man with Masks. The Gerudo girl is quite intrigued by the cat’s outfit, but it seems to not really care for her, sticking by Sheik mostly.

“Well, it’s been a busy night for all of us. Where do you plan to head come morning, Princess?” Viol asks you.

>A. The Temple of Time, Linkle might know how to fix this ring
>B. I shall try to meet up with Horon again
>C. Perhaps heading to Snowpeak should be our next priority
>D. If possible, could we get to work on restoring that bow and the arrows? Or at least making it into a Crossbow?

“It may be a good idea to meet with Horon again.” you reply, rubbing your chin contemplatively. “His sword should be fully restored soon. Speaking of restorations, Viol, how might we go about fixing the bow we recovered? Or, like I mentioned before, reforming it into a crossbow? And the arrows?”

“Well... I’d need the right materials to repair it. Let’s see...” He leans back, yawning. “Those instructions we recovered is going to come in handy. But it’ll take some time.”

“Time may not be on our side.” you remind him, recalling the phases of the moon. “How long?”

“No longer than a week, but no sooner than three days.”

You nod. “Very well. I shall entrust such a thing to you, Viol. I thank you again for all the help you have given us.”

“Ey, I’m just doing my part, Princess. Meanwhile, you get yourself some rest. I’ll go set up a bed. That goes for you two girls too.”

Sheik looks over to you quietly and nods, but you both notice no reply from Aveli. You glance at her and smile slightly. Seems she’s already taken Viol’s advice as she rests in one of the corners of the room. Sheik helps her over and the three of you tuck in for a few hours’ rest, the cat not leaving Sheik’s side the whole night.

Come morning, the three of you get ready to leave, Sheik telling the cat to stay with Viol until you all return. It... seems to pout a little, but it obeys her, moving up into the Item Shop’s attic. After returning the Belt of Winds to Aveli, you and Sheik hop on the Keaton’s back. Though, curiously, the Keaton mentions to you, ‘Are you quite sure you know where the boy is?’

You give him a puzzled look. “With the Gorons. Do you know something we don’t?”

‘Hee-hee-ho! It would seem the boy is on his way to Lon Lon Ranch.’

>A. Well, let’s be off to there then
>B. Headed that way? You know exactly where he is, then?

“Headed that way? Then... you know exactly where he is?”

‘Oh, I most certainly do. I assume you want me to bring you to him?’

“Yes, please! Thank you, Keaton!”

Sheik holds on tight as Keaton leaps away, Aveli following close behind the two of you. You head on away from Castle Town deep into Hyrule Field, Keaton moving swiftly across the grass. The three of you see something in the distance, almost like a dust cloud of...

“AAAAAAAAAAAA!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MueIdwtAnaY

...That scream is most certainly Horon’s. As you start to approach you notice a small figure being pursued by a group of... are those Peahats? Those are Peahats. At least five... no, ten of them. You spot Horon running as quickly as he can away from them, in the direction of Lon Lon Ranch. Though, strange, why isn’t he-

“BACK OFF YOU OVERSIZED HELLSHRUBS!”

And there’s the fireball. A blast of flame erupts around the Peahats pursuing Horon. Well... that damaged a couple. Not enough to stop them, though.

“Keaton, we need to get them off him! Let’s move in closer!” you command. “Sheik, Aveli, prepare yourselves!”

You have Keaton dash closer to the Peahats, readying a bomb and flinging it at the monsters. You manage to hit true, catching a few of the beasts underneath their spinning, bladelike leaves and doing some serious damage. That gets their attention. Five split off from the ten and start chasing after you, Sheik tossing several needles at the beasts, stopping one as Aveli comes up from behind and swings her massive sword underneath another, bringing it down too, narrowly avoiding getting struck by them again.

One more chasing after Horon breaks off and heads after Aveli as the boy flings another fireball down their way, the explosion knocking another one down. He then finally notices you on the Keaton. “T-Termina?! TERMINA, AM I EVER GLAD TO SEE YOU!” You notice that he’s not moving as fast as he could be, given the sword nearly the size of the boy himself on his back.

“Not much time for chatting, we need to bring these things down!”

The Peahats close in on you. Sheik readies herself, one hand around your waist, the other with a throwing dagger in it. You then wave your arm outwards and announce, “DIN’S FIRE!”

The fireball travels from your hand and bursts into the group of Peahats chasing you... but you miscalculate just how close they are, and the sheer force of the explosion is almost enough to knock you off of Keaton, causing the fox to have to correct itself for you. Two of the monsters go down, and with Keaton circling around Sheik is able to take down the last one with the dagger.

Aveli meanwhile easily dispatches the one chasing after her, Horon finally blasting the remaining ones with one last fling of a fireball... though just like you, he misjudges the blast radius, and is thrown into the air. Thinking quick, the Gerudo girl uses the Belt of Winds to dash to his rescue, catching him before he faceplants.

You and Sheik head towards him, Keaton’s movements slowing as you approach, the boy staring awkwardly at the small Iron Knuckle that came to his aid. “H-hi... uh-”

“Aveli. Aveli Draggai. I must say, seems out mutual friend was right about you.” she comments in an almost flirty tone.

“Ah! Miss Termina, right!” He tries to stand up, dusting himself off. “So I take it you’ve been well. Yes?”

“Indeed I have.” you reply with a nod, stepping off of Keaton.

“What exactly happened back there?” Sheik asks the boy.

Horon’s fairy companion makes her way out of his hat. “SOMEONE seemed to not pay attention when he claimed he just wanted to ‘get some more loot.’ I kept telling you that we shouldn’t try to delay, but you just HAD to pick that fight back there.”

“How was I supposed to know nine more of those things were going to show up?!” he barks at her.

“Maybe by not laughing and boasting for a good minute, maybe by not paying attention to the surroundings, maybe by making enough noise to wake the dead. Probably ALL OF THE ABOVE.” she shouts out in frustration.

Aveli takes an awkward step back, not really sure what to do about the growing argument.

>A. At the very least, you are okay now. You seemed to be heading towards Lon Lon Ranch, though...

You clear your throat to break the argument brewing between the two. “At the very least, you are okay now. And your sword has been repaired... though, it seems quite heavy, now.”

“Ah, no need to worry Miss Termina!” he declares proudly, grabbing the hilt and trying to pull the blade over his shoulder... and trying... and trying... and struggling... ah, there he goes. “HHRRRHHH!” Horon finally holds it in both hands. The blade IS as big as he is, if not a little longer. “As you can seeEEE!” He tries swinging it, everyone backing away as he loses his balance. “I have this p-perfectly... u-under controoOOOLL!” He brings it back, drawing a line in the dirt with it, finally trying to stab it into the ground to stabilize it, leaning on the guard. “Impressed?”

Sheik shakes her head. You... almost feel tempted to give him the benefit of a doubt. The blade itself is almost flawless, but it’s clearly exceptionally heavy, even moreso than it first appears, especially for someone like him. You almost certainly would have trouble controling such a thing if you didn’t have the Gloves of Power. Aveli perhaps could make better use of it. Still... “Well... have you been able to properly test your skills with the blade yet?”

“Test? Oh, uh... haha, well, of course I-” He stops leaning on the sword, and almost immediately the blade falls down, hilt and guard crashing on Horon’s foot. The shriek of pain he lets out is quite higher than you expected, your ears ringing.

“...Not even I could scream like that when I was your age, Horon.” you comment, still wincing. “If I did not know any better, I might have thought you a girl like us, listening in from the distance.” Seriously, is his foolishness his own, or is Horon trying to mask this on what a hero is “expected” to be like? ...Linkle might have a few words for Horon if given the chance.

Hopping on one foot he glares at you. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he asks, forcing his voice to be gruffer as he questions you before going back to blowing on his injured foot. “I am most certainly a manly young man.” he adds, trying his best to make his voice even gruffer and deeper.

The fairy sighs out in exasperation. “Letting your overconfidence guide your judgement again.”

Aveli confirms your suspicions as she picks up the sword, though clearly exerting some more force for it, handing it to Horon. He thanks the tiny Iron Knuckle, placing it back on his back. “I’ll be fine, really! So, Miss Termina, what have you been up to these last few days?”

"We fought evil, got some stuff and... if you wanna use that sword, you will need a way to get stronger or make the sword lighter unless..." I think a trade were he gets a sword he can actually use and is also magical is good enough. Plus that way our team gets the second best sword in all of Zelda games.

We also don't want to hang out with him too much since he wants to marry Princess Zelda and we are Princess Zelda. We also are still crushed because the hero in green died and he most likely was our true love.

Team ups? Yes. Regular team member? Hell no, a foolish and impulsive boy surrounded by girls would be a disaster.

Players don't like him because he's kind of an idiot, and when the fate of the kingdom is at stake in the forthcoming battle against all evil, that's a liability you can't afford. Never mind that the hero's journey is all about growth and struggle, but people don't want to some kid with aspirations of becoming the next hero when there's a kingdom to save.

>>
>>1951742
>>1951789
That and they don't trust him with a weapon as meaty as Biggoron's Sword.
>>
Would he really grow into a hero, only playing second fiddle to us?

Of course realistically he'd be far less likely to get himself killed around us, but he's done well enough so far.

You finish getting Horon up to speed on the encounter in the Spirit Temple and the Temple of Time, being careful not to give him any hints on who you are. While impressed on how the three of you took down the dragon, he seems absolutely wowed by your description of Linkle. “And she just jumped in there, struck ‘em down like it was nothing?”

“It is quite clear that no immitation can compare to a true Hero of the past.” you affirm. “But as I said, she sadly can not help us, yet.”

Horon places his hands behind his head. “Betcha she’d find Zelda in no time.”

Oh if he knew... “I am sure she would help her at a moment’s notice. Just as she helped her Zelda.”

He stretches, then cracks his knuckles. “Well, don’t worry, Termina. I’ll be able to prove to her I can wield that blade. Zelda’s as good as found. And you’ve been a big help, even going out there and trying to stop that dragon thing with your pals.” He gives you a thumb’s up. “Expert sidekick work.” You notice his fairy hang her head once more.

You give the boy a kind smile. “How about just ‘friend’ instead?”

He noticeably tries not to smile, shrugging. “Friend, huh? Sure, sure.”

“Though... you intend to meet with Linkle?” you ask.

Horon nods. “If she’s still there? Damn right I will.”

Ooogh. Well... “Horon, if you intend to wield the Master Sword, perhaps you should try first using one of these.” You show him the Servant Sword of Nayru, motioning for Sheik and Aveli to show him theirs. “Like I mentioned, these swords were within the Temple of Time. Linkle told us that they were designed to help the Hero learn to use the Master Sword. Would it not be fitting if you truly want to learn from her?”

Horon is a little astonished by what you’re proposing. But he seems to understand your logic clearly, nodding. “Well okay then. Thanks, Termina.” He first gives your sword a test, and to the relief of both you and his fairy companion, he doesn’t struggle nearly as much wielding it. Aveli enthusiastically hands him her sword next, and while the two-handed blade is a bit harder for him, he’s able to control it much more readily than his own sword, almost as if the blade itself is helping him. Last, Sheik silently hands him her sword. To even her surprise, Horon seems almost to be a natural with it, the lighter sword allowing him quicker slashes, even uncovering some Rupees in the grass nearby. Well lucky him.

“You seem to do well with the swords, Horon. Say... would you mind letting Aveli try your sword for a bit, too?”

“Huh? Oh, sure. Go ahead, Miss Iron Knuckle lady.” He seems focused on both the Sword of Din and the Sword of Farore. Looks like he’s trying to decide his preference between the two. “Where you headed to after this?”

One cannot rule without followers and I do not think Princess Zelda wants to tear her country in a civil war. Besides, to be a mere puppet ruler of a council, would not that just be the same as having regents? Even the most well intended don't think Princess Zelda would be fit to rule as she lost her kingdom as a child and nevef finished the education needed to rule. You watch Aveli swing the Biggoron’s Sword around, with much greater ease than Horon managed. It’s still a massive sword, not something that can act as swiftly as a normal blade, but a girl as strong as her seems to be able to wield it effectively. “Well... we were sort of on our way to Lon Lon Ranch. Horon, you seem to prefer that larger blade.” you reply, then comment on. “Would you be willing to temporarily trade swords?”

“Trade?” he asks in the middle of a swing, at first struggling to stop it properly, but he corrects it just in time. He defintiely is learning through them. Curiouser and curiouser... “Uh... well...”

“Hey, I’d be fine with it.” Aveli comments. “This sword’s not too shabby, and you seem to be doing fine yourself, Mr. Little Hero.”

“...You’re the same height as I am.” Horon grumbles. “But... well, I guess that’s a fair trade.” He lifts the Servant Sword of Din up into the air, smiling proudly. “You know what? Deal. If we’re gonna be helping each other, might as well be willing to share tools. Gotta save the Princess and save Hyrule.”

Aveli approaches him and offers her hand. “Deal.”

The two shake, Horon satisfied with the transaction. “What are you planning to do up at Lon Lon Ranch, anyway?”

“Brunch, of course.” you tell him with a friendly smile. “Can’t save Hyrule on an empty stomach.”

Horon nods. “Ah, of course, of course. Words of wisdom, Termina.”

“Why were you headed in that direction, though?” you question. Sheik gives him a suspicious look too, getting her sword back.

He seems to sink back slightly. “...I was just trying to get away from the Peahats. They don’t come into towns and other areas like that, was hoping I could get rid of them that way.”

You... don’t quite like his explanation, but for once his fairy does come to his defense. “Unlike Stalfos, Bokoblins, Moblins, and other monsters, Peahats are territorial. If you manage to leave their territory, they’ll go back to their proper nests. Proper towns are not places they like enter.”

...You do recall Impa telling you something like that, but that makes you wonder, just how DID that Peahat end up in the Great Fairy Temple not too long ago? Did its territory move, or was it supplanted? “But... ten of them?”

“Th-they snuck up on me!” Horon protests, pouting slightly. Aveli giggles a little at that.

“Well... anyway, after that I have some people I would like to meet again, plus I need to check on if there are any new leads on a threat we have been following. You remember the encounter we had, Horon? The masked monster?”

“Y-yeah?”

You cross your arms. “The person responsible is still out there. And he is a threat to Hyrule.”

Horon stands tall, taking in the seriousness of your words. “Okay. Food, then sleuthing. Good thinking, Termina.”

“Let us be off then.”

Aveli offers to carry Horon to the Ranch, though the boy bashfully declines, and for a moment you get the impression that he was about to comment that it’s supposed to be the other way around... but he stops himself after looking over Aveli’s armor. Sheik glares at him when he gets on Keaton with you and her, but makes no further comment. And so, the four of you head off to Lon Lon Ranch...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd3jms3Bes4

The journey is thankfully quick, given the awkward silence that follows, even in spite of Aveli’s attempts to make small talk with the boy. At one end of the ranch you spot little Romani again practicing her archery skills as her sisters seem to be moving jugs of milk into a barn. Horon walks forward first, not noticing Keaton returning to his mask. You wave to the girls before heading in to the inn.

You know what? You’re hungry, and you want a good meal. You go for the deluxe meal deal, a Tough Lon Lon Meat Stew. And at only 20 Rupees, that’s quite a deal!

[Rupees: 220/500]

[Defense Temporarily Increased!]

It’s a really chewy stew, the beef inside it is almost like a soft jerky, but the taste is surprisingly good. Aveli opts for the same as you, Horon doing the same, while Sheik keeps her meal light. “Sho, whahut’s your shtorie?” Horon questions the Sheikah girl, trying to chew through some of the tougher meat in his soup.

“Manners, Horon.” his fairy pleads in an exhausted tone.

He quickly tries to gulp it down, trying not to choke, finally clearing his throat. “Sorry, sorry. I’m just wondering, you’re kinda quiet. What’s your story? You a friend of Termina too?”

“Yes.” she answers bluntly, refusing to give out any more.

“...Cool.” Horon mumbles out, eyeing her suspiciously.

“So you’re one of Hyrule’s nobles, huh?” Aveli asks him.

He gains a prideful grin again. “Lord Horon, here to save Hyrule and rescue our beloved Princess.”

You notice her give you a quick, awkward glance, before trying to continue on. “Haven’t actually worked for any of the big name nobles yet. Eh, might get around to it some day. So what sparked that desire to go out and try all you’re doing? Family expectations, trouble at home, wanting to prove a bully you’re tough as diamond?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i62G-3hE_k

The last one seems to connect a bit deeper than he was hoping her. “...Eh. Number of reasons. But... I guess a big one is also my cousin. He did his best to save the Princess, but it cost him everything. He can’t protect her anymore. She’s in danger for as long as Hyrule is like this.” You hear honesty in his words, not as much of the smug and hotheaded gruffness he’s been trying to portray, his voice lighter and more humble. “I want to make the lands safe for her again. My dad told me the Goddess took her form to help guide us... and without her, we’re stumbling in the darkness, lacking the light we need to bring the Kingdom back to its brilliant glory, envy of all the lands. We need her. And just like the Heroes of the past, just like my cousin, I will do my part in keeping her safe. We’ll rebuild Hyrule, better than ever.”

The table goes quiet as the three of you take in what he said. His words truly are honest, and while you know how he expects his fairytale rescue of a Princess in need to go... at least his heart’s in the right place. You think. Though the silence does have its benefits. There are a few more things you catch in conversation around you. Shadowy figures at the edge of the Lost Woods. Strange sounds coming from the Temple of Time. And, curiously, someone catching glimpse of a “Golden Knight.”

After the meal, you let Aveli and Horon chat together as you pull Sheik aside, asking to talk with her in private. Quietly, and away from the two, you ask, “...I assume it’s because he does not yet know.”

“P-pardon?”

“The reason you do not wish to talk with him. You have been even quieter than usual.” you say, putting your hand on her shoulder. “I know it must be difficult hearing someone talk like I’m not able to hear every word.”

“It... is a little awkward. But I am starting to think I am a poor judge of character, too.” she laments. “I must admit, I am not... fully trained for situations like this. I know it is better to keep quiet rather than to talk endlessly like a fool.”

“I understand, Sheik. But if you do need to tell me something? If you need to just... talk? I will be perfectly happy to be there.”

She smiles shyly at you. “I appreciate that... Termina.”

You and Sheik head back to Aveli and Horon, the Gerudo girl talking with him about how he got his sword. You return the wave, approaching Captain Douglas. “It is good to see you again.”

“Glad to see you’re in one piece too, kid.” he replies, flashing a smile. “Things up in the Temple go okay?”

“More difficult than I initially thought. A group of Darknuts got in there.” you explain.

“Darknuts? In the Temple of Time?” he asks in mild shock.

“Leader was looking for the Master Sword. We were able to chase him off before he could find it, though it was not easy.” You place your hand on the side of your neck as you recall just how close the encounter was. If it wasn’t for Hero’s that statue... “Still, as you can see, we are all fine.”

“Captain Douglas, I have been hearing talk of some kind of Golden Knight traveling the lands. Might you know who such an individual is? Any soldiers you know?”

He contemplates your question for a moment. “Golden Knight... ah, yeah, I’ve heard about someone like that. Up north, there was someone going around taking some bounties on a few nasty monsters. Guess it’s one way to make a business, doing what you know. If they’re able to have fancy armor like that, they were probably well-off to begin with. From how I’ve heard them described, what they wear is not exactly standard equipment. Probably got some magic junk in there too. They didn’t show up back in the War, at the very least.”

“So you do not know who they might be, but you a good guess, then?”

He nods. “Fairly reasonable guess is that they’re either from a noble house and never took up arms in the conflict, or they’re from one of the lands up north and came down because of the monsters. Why do you want to know, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“I think you know my reasons already.” you tell him.

He crosses his arms. “Thinking on hiring them to help you clear out some of the Temples?”

“At the very least, this person knows the kind of danger that could strike at Hyrule, especially now. Monsters growing stronger, bolder, attacks increasing in frequency... if what you say is true, having an expert monster hunter working alongside us could help substantially. And if they require payment, I am most certainly willing to pay for their services.”

“Don’t get too ahead of yourself, kid.” he warns. “While you’ve got plenty of talent, that sounds like a massive undertaking. I know you’ve got some allies, strong ones, too-” He looks down at Sheik, then over to Aveli, doing a double-take when he sees Horon. “...And, er, some more ‘enthusiastic’ folks have joined you too, I see.” The Captain looks back at you. “But that is a big bite to chew on. You’re still young, Termina. Some people will overlook that, others... will try to take advantage of that. While I may not know who this Golden Knight is, I’d still be cautious around them.”

“I understand, Sir.” Something tells you this isn’t the first time he’s given a speech like this. “I am aware of the kind of peril it could put me in. But it is one reason why I want to make sure Hyrule is safe.”

“Just so we’re clear.”

“Yes, we are clear.” you confirm with a nod. “If you do not mind me changing the subject, where have you been traveling recently? Anywhere near the Lost Woods?”

He gives you a suspicious look. “...Maybe.”

“I have been hearing rumors of figures going into it. Have you seen any suspicious people headed in there?”

“What will you do if I say yes?” he questions in an almost scolding tone.

You raise your hands up. “Sir, I do not intend to follow every mysterious stranger I hear rumors of. I am simply trying to figure out what one might be doing in there.” Sheik seems to raise an eyebrow at you, but gives no further comment.

“Are you now?”

“Another friend of mine lives close to the Lost Woods, and told me a curious bit of information not too long ago. A boy from her village ended up in there, causing a massive search party to be formed to locate him. He was found safe thanks to strange children that appeared in the Lost Woods.” You tap the side of your head. “I am not sure such luck will arise for everyone who enters those woods. So why would people head in there, willingly?”

Captain Douglas is surprised by this deduction, a slight grin appearing on his face. “I have seen a couple weird-looking folks at the outskirts the other night. No idea who they are, what they might be. They weren’t monsters at the very least, they left when we approached instead of attacking. They did strike me as odd, though.”

“Hrmn... any masks or strange coverings for their faces?”

“Now that you mention it, they did have kinda funny-looking faces. It was fairly dark, but each of them seemed identical, in spite of variation in build.”

That’s a lead. “Thank you, Sir.”

“Don’t go searching for them near there, kid.” he warns.

“I merely have reason to be suspicious of such characters. Again, I will not follow every mysterious stranger I hear rumor of.”

“Okay. Now my turn to ask the question. Why did you bring up ‘masks?’” he asks.

“In the last few places I have been to, there has been a connection between the monsters causing havoc and masks. It may have something to do with the increase in attacks. But I need a solid lead before I can really make a convincing case on where to go. When I was up at Death Mountain, I recall the Gorons encountering someone with masks before trouble sprang up. Could you keep watch out for such a thing, Captain Douglas?”

He nods. “I can do that.”

“I thank you greatly for this.” you tell him with a sweet smile.

“Captain Douglas, if you have the time, can you help me with some more mounter combat lessons?”

That lifts his spirits up a bit. “You know what, kid? Sure. Where’s your fox pal?”

‘Outside.’ Keaton comments to you telepathically. ‘I would prefer a bit more open space, if you wish to practice more.’

“Right outside.” you tell the man. “Sheik, if you would prefer, you can stay in here.”

She shakes her head, following the two of you as Douglas jumps up onto his horse and heads outside. Once the three of you are out, you feel Keaton leap out of his mask, silently walking up behind you, not catching the Captain’s notice. “Where’s- oh. Sneaky fella.”

Keaton sits, tails swaying back and forth behind it. You look to him. “Which lessons are you willing to teach me today?”

With his horse ready, he asks you, “Well, if I recall correctly, we got dismounting, quick-mounting, and some firing practice done. How well do you handle your blade atop that fox?”

“I have not had much opportunity. Though I would suspect I have much to learn.” you reply.

“Hmm... and that stealthy approach just now has me intrigued. I’ve trained for quite some time to be able to get my girl here to move quietly when needed, but it is almost natural for him. How about you?”

“I... am not as good as Sheik here.” you tell him humbly.

“There’s an option. Sneaking strikes. He’s able to get lower to the ground, too. What do you want to focus on first?”

“I feel I should brush up more on my sword fighting skills. Stealth can only go so far, even if the proposal is interesting. Shall we begin?”

The Captain nods. “Draw your sword.” As you follow his instructions, you notice him put on a more heavily armored gauntlet. Curious. Well, you bring out the Servant Sword of Nayru, and both you and Captain Douglas start moving, horse and Keaton circling around one another. “You need to time your movements with your mount, each breath you take, every twitch of your muscles in sync with how he steps, leaps, turns. You must be aware of the shape of your mount at all times, for any strong strike you attempt might risk injuring them. Now, faster.”

Keaton starts to run, and you pay attention to how he moves across the terrain. You’re at an advantage due to how the spirit seems to have precise, coordinated control of its own movements, but even still, when the Captain commands you to try your first swing, you realize it’s not as easy as it appears. It’s a fair cut, but nowhere near as polished when you’re on your feet. The man tells you to continue, and you manage, though with greater understanding of how awkward it is.

“Keep your focus a bit lower, you’re at an elevated position. While that fox isn’t as tall as a horse, you’re still a bit higher up compared to most opponents. Only larger monsters will be vulnerable at more normal ranges, and it’s risky engaging with them in melee.” he instructs.

You follow his commands again, taking some time to get used to it, but eventually pulling through. It’s not perfect, but you understand the basics better now. You won’t be able to manage it nearly as well at Keaton’s full speed, but you might not need to.

“Okay Termina, one more thing. Turn to face me.” he commands. You and Keaton stop and turn, and notice that both the Captain and his horse are quite some distance away. “Mounted opponents are more likely to be using longer weapons to engage in melee. But there are ways around this. Now, come at me.”

“Are you sure?” you question.

“Don’t have all day, kid.”

You and Keaton charge, Keaton making sure he’s at a comfortable speed as Captain Douglas comes at you. It’s almost like a joust, but... is he seriously expecting you to strike at him. You feel yourself hesitate, but he tells you to act just as he instructed. You get up close, making sure the blunt side of your sword is facing him... but as you do, you fail to properly swing the blade completely. It almost bounces off his gauntlet, when you feel a sudden jolt on the blade’s side. With a loud clanging sound, you realize that as you attempted to follow through, you missed him completely... because your sword was knocked away.

Keaton’s able to stop easily, but you have trouble really processing what just happened. You turn and see Captain Douglas still moving, horse at full sprint as he goes towards your sword, stuck in the ground, easily picking it up. “Offense needs defense like fish need water. Even if you can’t reach your opponent’s vitals, you can find a way to disarm them if you have a good focus on your defense.” He gallops up next to you and Keaton, your sword in his hand. “And if you practice hard enough, and with just a sprinkle of luck, you might be able to take the weapon for yourself.” he states, returning your sword.

“It is clear I have much to learn still.” you state humbly, retrieving your sword.

“But you are willing to learn.” he adds with a smile. “That’s what separates a lucky fighter from a skilled one.”

“Hmn... I would guess that this ability to disarm an opponent brings about greater risks than normal combat.” you state, looking over your sword again.

“You’d be correct. But like I said, it’s something that you do more as a defensive maneuver against an opponent with a longer weapon.” He brings his fist up. “As you just saw.”

“It would seem I need to rely more on my allies before I can master such a maneuver.” you surmise, thinking over what you just experienced one more time. “...Would you have any advice on how to prevent something like this counter, should a real foe attempt it on me?”

He has his horse gallop around you slowly. “Getting out of the way, holding a steady grip on your sword. This counter exists to cover a disparity between two fighters. I did kinda surprise you there, but that’s the point behind it. Catching an oncoming attacker off-guard.”

“That makes sense. So, I have to be able to react quickly... is there any kind of tell?”

“You’ll notice it when a foe is not directly aiming at you.” Captain Douglas responds. “But it will take a bit to get used to.”

Like he mentioned... “The monsters attacking the Temple of Time were not the easiest of creatures to ward off. I am not perfect, but I know that there are times I hesitate, times I might stumble. I need to be able to work on any flaws I might have.”

“Sometimes, kid, the best move you can make is not fighting at all.” he comments, his horse snorting in seeming agreement.

“Well, you did mention stealth, after this I could try to see if there is a way for us to sneak past enemies rather than engaging them.” You ready your sword again, making sure the blunt end is facing him. “After this, of course.”

“Okay, come on, Termina!” he shouts out as his horse starts charging.

Well, that's an interesting set of rolls. Good news is you passed!

You head at him, Keaton moving faster and faster. Focus, Zelda. Focus. You prepare to swing your sword, the Captain making his movements a bit more noticeable for you. You find yourself hesitating once again, but before you slash out, you stop yourself. He’s right. He can’t reach you, but he can reach your sword. You don’t follow through with the swing as a gauntleted jab travels past you.

You almost lose stability atop Keaton as you pass by him; while that didn’t connect, there was enough force behind that punch to make you jerk to avoid it. You find yourself clinging to Keaton’s side with one arm, the other holding your sword out percariously. It’s not an elegant dodge by any stretch, but you succeeded.

Captain Douglas stops his horse some distance away. “Haha, there you go. But you can’t let up yet, Termina. Again!”

You awkwardly move back up on Keaton, and try this several more times. You improve significantly from your first failed attempt and your awkward second, but successful one. After nearly an hour...

“Hrraaahhh!” you yell out, feinting a swing at the Captain, causing him to misjudge his jab. Timing it as carefully as you can, you follow through with the attack just as the punch passes by you.

“Agh!” the man shouts out, the blunt edge of your sword almost knocking him off his horse. You try to get Keaton to slow down, worried that you may have hurt him... but you hear him start to laugh. “Haha, took you a few tries, but looks like you’ve done it. Nice work, kid.”

>A. Thank you for teaching me, I think this is enough for today

“Captain, I thank you greatly for teaching me all this. I hope I have not taken up too much of your time with this request.” you tell him humbly.

He shakes his head. “Eh, not too much of it. You’re a capable kid, your heart’s in the right place, and you want to improve yourself. Already better than some of the recruits I’ve trained before.”

You get off Keaton. “Still, perhaps this is enough for today. Thank you again for helping me. Ah, but before we part, might you know anything I should do to pick up these skills faster?”

“Practice makes perfect, but pacing perfects practice. If you fail to pace yourself, you’re going to burn out.” Captain Douglas leaps off his horse and lands in front of you, giving you a salute. “Now, you just try to stay out of trouble.”

You giggle a little. “I will do my best to keep to that.”

He holds out his hand. “Take care, Termina.”

You give him a firm shake. “You too, Captain.” You’re about to walk away, when you spot Horon and Aveli finally heading towards you, the boy a little surprised to see the man with you. “...One more thing. I know I am not the only one who needs some guidance. Might you... have some advice on helping a certain someone grow? On where he might need some guidance?”

He glances out over at Horon. “Overconfidence makes learning difficult. Impulsiveness enhances that difficulty further. Sometimes it takes a hard fall for someone to overcome that difficulty. But having other people there to help pick that person back up can make a world of difference. Do what you can to help them grow, Termina, and there’s a good chance your efforts will be rewarded.”

“Chance?” you repeat.

“Nobody is perfect. But helping others is always worth trying.” He jumps up again and leaps back on his horse, heading off.

“So, this is where you’ve been all this time.” Horon comments, watching the Captain ride away.

“Needed some practice for mounted combat.” you reply. “What have you two been...” Only now do you notice Horon has a few scratches, scuffs, and several dozen feathers on him. “...doing.”

“Why, that young girl... er...”

“Romani.” Aveli mentions.

“Romani, yeah, she seemed to have lost some of her Cuccos. I naturally offered to help her. No birds, no matter how crafty, can hide from Lord Horon.” He stands tall and proud. Aveli is struggling to hold back laughter.

“I... see.”

>A. In any case, let’s start heading south, towards the Lost Woods
>B. We should get going north, see who this Golden Knight might be

You look at the Ring of Ancients for a moment. Linkle is waiting for you. “Girls, any objections to returning to the Temple of Time?” you ask.

“... ‘Girls?’” Horon repeats in mild annoyance.

You rub the back of your neck. “Ah, and Horon.”

“That’s better.”

“None from me, let’s get going!” Aveli announces.

“Indeed, let us return.” Sheik affirms.

This time around, Aveli manages to convince Horon that she could at least give him a piggyback ride. He seems hesitant at first, but looking at you and Sheik he makes an “Ohhhh” sound that you are not exactly sure you like. With you and Sheik riding on Keaton and Aveli carrying Horon with the Belt of Winds, you’re able to make good time back to the village before the Temple, the murky, foggy swamp coming into view.

https://youtu.be/MjzJhkkTokE

The village is still hauntingly empty. You are able to catch glimpse of a light in the distance... Beedle’s boat. You notice Horon seems quite unnerved when you all arrive. Crossing again might require Beedle’s help, otherwise it’s all the way around the swamp, like when you left the Temple.

The four of you start to walk through the town, heading towards the merchant’s boat. You recall that Viol was a business partner of his, too. Hrmn... maybe should bring that up next time you meet. You walk across the creaking wood, taking step on the ship. “Beedle? Hello? It is us again, we-”

...

You freeze, staring at the man as he looks on silently at your group. What... what is he doing? Why is he wearing that?

Beedle’s eyes peer through the mask. You gulp slightly, your hand moving to your sword slowly. He raises his hand... “OHHHH!”

Viol jumps slightly at the man’s loud greeting, Aveli starting to reach for her new weapon. You hesitantly speak to them, “Hello again... Beedle?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vh7oW_RiJY

He motions his arm over to a rope near him. “I have... wares...” He pulls it up a curtain with it, revealing a huge wallet, a Piece of Heart, and... a mask like his. “Would you... like to purchase?”

Each one is priced at 500 Rupees. You couldn’t exactly buy them right now if you wanted to, but maybe you could scrounge up some cash later. Still... he seems dazed, confused, barely even recognizing you.

“Five hundred.” He points down to the sign.

“No, the one you are wearing.” you try to clarify.

“Five hundred.” He again points down.

You pinch the ridge of your nose. “...How much to get you to remove that mask?”

And... he doesn’t really seem to understand your question. He points again at the sign. “Mask is... five hundred...”

You take a step back towards your friends. “Aveli, back me up here.”

She nods quietly as the two of you start to walk forward. Beedle watches you unblinkingly. “You... wish to purchase... mask?”

“May we try one on before we buy it?”

Beedle refuses to reply, hand just slowly moving away as he watches you both. Even the little Iron Knuckle’s nerves are being tested by his silence. You keep watching him, picking up the mask he has for sale. You look it over. It... doesn’t really FEEL different, but the atmosphere around you is chilling.

Aveli looks you in the eye and shakes her head. Sheik looks like she’s about to grab it away from you as you can hear Horon gulp behind you. You keep looking it over, trying to feel something, anything...

“It is... a good mask... five hundred.”

You put on the Mask of Truth as you place the mask back down. There... there is definitely something up with the mask. You see... well, you don’t actually SEE it, but you get the impression that there’s something seeping out of the mask. You look back at Beedle. The impression isn’t as strong, but it’s still there. “...You... have mask already?”

“Would you like to trade?” you ask him.

“I... already have mask.”

“Then excuse me for a moment.” you say, quickly stepping outside with your allies.

“What in the world is wrong with that guy?” Horon asks, trying to whisper, but just barely keeping his voice from being audible to the merchant.

“That mask he has on is doing something to his mind. What it is, I do not know for sure, but we can not let him stay like this.” you state with certainty.

“What do you propose? Holding him down and ripping it off like Verana?” Aveli questions.

“I could try to remove it, but you would need to keep him distracted.” Sheik comments.

But as you all discuss... you notice out of the corner of your eye that the boat is no longer tied to the dock. Slowly... it’s starting to move away.

“Everyone, jump!” you announce, leaping onto the dock. Aveli and Sheik are able to clear it easily, Horon jumping after them. After you’re off, you bring out your Hookshot and aim at the boat, firing at it to keep it from leaving. You successfully catch on to the boat!

...And as you do, you lose your footing, the moving boat and slippery dock causing you to stumble. Thankfully, Sheik and Aveli are stable enough that they manage to catch you just in time, keeping you from falling into the swampy water. You all try to pull back, the Hookshot trying to reel the boat back in.

It takes a bit of effort, but eventually the boat comes back to the dock. There’s no response inside from Beedle; it’s as if he’s blissfully unaware of what just happened. “Okay that is way, way too sketchy.” Horon comments. “I’m going in there to give him a piece of my mind!”

“Sheik, Aveli, can you go in with him? I will try to tie down the boat so it doesn’t trail off again.” You bring the Hookshot towards a post, attempting to locate the rope, or even any rope, to help keep it there. “Make sure he doesn’t try to jump off or anything.”

“Got it, T.” Aveli replies, jumping back on after Horon. Sheik looks back at you and nods, all three of them heading in.

You hear shouting and shouting from Horon as meek, dispasionate, monotone statements on the availability of items and their prices come from Beedle. Aaaand there’s the sound of wood being smashed. You finally get the boat tied down as well as you can manage and jump back on. Oh there are clanging sounds why are there clanging sounds?

If there were any more distance you’d be sprinting inside. You see... what. “HOLD ‘EM DOWN!” Horon shouts out, Aveli grabbing Beedle by the waist as Horon tries to remove the helmet. “COME ON, YOU STUPID... LITTLE... AGH!”

His fairly finally comes out, inspecting it. “It... seems the curse on it is tying it to him. The more you struggle, the harder it will be to pull off.”

“THEN I JUST NEED TO PULL HARDER!”

The fairy sighs out at the attempt. “You might end up hurting him if you keep this up...”

“There is... mask... for sale...”

“Sheik, have you noticed any traps here?” you question.

“No, the boat itself is safe.” she responds.

“Good.” You confidently bring out your harp, and...

https://youtu.be/uoxWpmDUUNc

Horon looks at you with confusion as you start to play, but notices the mask becoming looser. As soon as you finish, he gives it a mighty tug. “Hrraaaaaahhh!”

The mask comes off, Beedle freed from its curse. He’s a little dizzy for a moment, Aveli letting go of him as Horon tosses the mask to the other side of the boat. The merchant blinks at you... “OHHHH!” Beedle exclaims.

“...He’s still possessed.” Horon comments lowly.

“You saaaved me!” he adds, waving his arms up in the air. “Thaaaank you!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQqyiWmw_cQ

You sigh in relief. Yeah, he’s back to normal. You think. “What happened to you?”

“I... do not remember all of it.” he says, hanging his head. “I was exchanging items with... someone? He had wares that would fetch a high price, Piece of Heart even! He offered a mask, but I tried it on...” Beedle spots the one for sale and nearly leaps away from it. “OHHH! There it is!”

Horon points to the one he tossed away. “That one was on your head. Termina and I got it off of you.”

“Thaaaank you!” Beedle exclaims again.

“Do you recall what this person looked like, any especially defining features?” you ask.

“Hmmmmm... looked friendly enough. Had a weird scar on his face, dressed in white tunic, blue pants... was smiling quite a bit...” the merchant recalls, scratching his head. “Talked in rhyme, all the time! ...Wait, did I just do that?”

“That description does sound familiar.” Sheik notes, glancing at you. “Was he coming from the direction of Castle Town?”

...

The thief in Hyrule Castle! You smile at Sheik and nod. Beedle scratches his head again. “I... think so?”

So that’s what he was doing after he left. “I am sorry that happened to you, Beedle. Are you okay?”

He looks around. “...I think so, thanks to all of you. I owe you a lot! Tell you what, for these wares, half off the sale-”

There’s a jolt across the ship. You look back outside and see that the rope’s been removed again... and now the ship isn’t just floating away. It’s being pulled.

Zas, little help here! you shout out, holding on to the boat and pulling out a bombchu. As the boat is pulled away further and further into the swamp, Zas heads into the water... and you feel the boat bump slightly.

Zas moves out, swinging his blade at a what seems to be a large tentacle. Octorok!

You fling the Bombchu overboard, letting it travel out along the bottom of the swampy water in the direction of the oversized Octorok. You try to brace yourself as the girls and Horon come out with you. An underwater explosion rocks the ship, waves causing it to bob up and down.

While thats a clear hit, given by the pain the tentacle exhibited, it seems aware of how dangerous you are now, and immediately swings down at you. AGH! you shout out, almost getting knocked overboard. Sheik bolts to your rescue, leaping to catch you, with enough force to get to Zas and bounce off him back onto the boat.

[Hearts: 8.5/9]

Horon brings out the Servant Sword of Din as Aveli charges with her newly traded Biggorons Sword.

The Gerudo girl, while capable of wielding the sword, does show a bit of struggle in properly using it to attack; the blades bigger than she is, and the sheer mass of the object means it needs more stopping force. While she smacks the tentacle away, damaging it and keeping it from attempting to knock you off again, its Horon who successfully slashes it off. Seems the sword IS doing him some good after all.

Theres a loud gurgling sound further down the swamp; while the boats not being dragged away as quickly, its still moving in deeper.

An idea clicks in your head. "Horon, you can still use the Gloves of Flame, right?"

"Sure do." he says with a nod.

You slip on the Power Gloves. "I can help you get some vertical distance, blast it when you have the opportunity."

Aveli stands before the two of you defensively. "Okay, then Ill keep you two safe."

Sheik readies some needles. "Lets take this thing down."

As the boat turns slowly, the form of the giant monster coming into view. You watch carefully, waiting for Zas to make his strike... and the moment he does, you see the beasts form shake and writhe in pain through the thick fog. "NOW!" you command, tossing out another Bombchu into the water. It tries to hide, but you catch it just in time, causing the monster to shudder, more tentacles rising from the water. Sheik gets a few lucky strikes in on its main body, you doing the same with your Crossbow, the Sheikah girl ducking down under one of the tentacles as it attempts to swing over you. Aveli stomps down hard, enough that it slightly cracks the wood, and swings her giant sword at the monsters tentacle, slicing it off before it reaches you.

You resist the slight muscle memory of flinging Horon directly at the monster and toss him up into the air, high enough that even though it fires a large boulder at him, it misses him entirely. "TIME FOR SOME CALAMARI!" Horon declares, flinging out fireballs right into the monsters eye. The combined assault causes the beast to writhe and even let out what sounded like a gargled roar, finally sinking beneath the waters. Horon drops down, and you catch him as Zas returns.

"There are no further beasts like that one." the Phantom Knight tells you. "For now, at least."

"It certainly did seem to take us by surprise... almost like it was waiting for us..." you comment aloud.

"LAAAAAND HO!" Beedle declares

The five of you look outwards, finally noticing the Temple of Time in the distance again. Well, you managed to make it this far, at least.

>A. Sheik, that thief... do you think he knew we would head this way?
>B. Talk with Beedle, might still want that Piece of Heart
>C. Horon, nice teamwork
>D. Should head off to the Temple, its why you came here, after all

We have a bit less than the half he asked for, but we should come back out with enough more to cover it,

Looking at Sheik, you ask her quietly, "Do you think that... thief we encountered last night knew we were headed this way?"

"It is a possibility. No guarantee that they knew we would be headed her immediately, but at some point, we would, given what was in his bag..."

Thats not a comforting thought. "What're you two talking about?" Horon questions.

"Ah, sorry, just trying to see if we can piece together any leads on the person responsible for this." you tell him, trying to keep his mind off any more probing questions.

"Ahh, ahh, right. Of course." he responds, satisfied with your answer.

"In any case, nice teamwork back there." you praise. "That could have gotten quite nasty without your help."

"Heh, no problem." Horon tells you, grinning wide and giving a thumb's up.

You head back inside the shop area, catching Beedles attention. "I am again sorry for what you had to go through. Are you okay, Beedle?"

"Fine, fine! That gave me quite a scare, but were fine now."

You sigh in relief. "That is good to hear. Though... you did mention something about a discount?"

He laughs. "Half off, take your pick!"

Agh, but still a few Rupees short... "We will have to be back for that. There is someone we need to meet first. Can you stay for just a while?"

"Of course! In fact, consider it half off for all my wares." the merchant declares. "Ah, but those masks, they are free. Take them, please."

You laugh softly. "That we shall. Thank you, Beedle."

The boat finally reaches the shore, and the four of you hop out. Your eyes look to the Temple of Time. You pull out the Ring of Ancients one more time... and something about it seems different. Perhaps it might be able to be restored within the Temple? Well, only one way to find out...

Even half off we can't afford that piece of heart? We really should cut grass a lot more.
>>
>>1973456
Only 30 Rupees short. Shouldn't be too difficult to get, might be worth checking a few pots inside the Temple.

We had an even 200 left, we had spent 20 on a nice lunch.
