Conservation Frustration

Character info pastebin in progress: http://pastebin.com/iB0tb7rz
Dice odds for best of 3: http://pastebin.com/994WTT3g

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roselia)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Tabo Island, the newly modernized Grass Temple

Recently: You battled Beauty Branch girls in the grass temple, got the beauty branch leader to agree to a fashion show, and discussed religious doubts with Keira.

Keira looks at the floor before donning her mask. It’s unneeded, she already has makeup on. But you suppose it helps her feel more protected in her vulnerable state. She just poured her heart out to you about her religion and doubts.

“Maybe they don’t know every detail exactly, but they’re right about the basic foundations. Every generation is going to have a different outlook, and nothing stays the same, but the big ideas, the important things, those get passed on.”

“Maybe.” She sniffs. “That...that is a thing we discuss in study, sometimes. But what if that’s just a line to give people wiggle room? Your mom said that Arceus works in mysterious ways, and the first thing I thought was that that sounds like a nice excuse her priests must say to cover for not understanding the afterlife.” There’s no elitism or haughtiness in her voice. She’s stating it the same way you’d talk about a five year old’s explanation for how electricity works. You might even admire the logic in their train of thought even if they get it wrong. “Our whole culture is based around these details. We don’t do secularism like mainlanders do. There’s no fancy...compartmentalizing of ideas.” You notice that even her wording has become a little more mainlander-sounding recently.

“Well...” you’re walking on thin ice here, “what if it isn’t true? Isn’t that okay as long as it comforts people and brings them together?”

Through the mask, the reflection from the water in her eyes them makes them shine. It gives them a piercing quality that sees right into your soul. “If it’s not true and I’ve been lying to the dying... I...” Her voice cracks.

“You gave them a happy life and comforting last moments.”

She’s about to say something when Gobble interrupts. He walks up and offers her a piece of bread.

“Thank you, Gobble.” She sniffs something back and takes it. In return, she gives him a quick blessing out of habit. She catches herself for a moment, but awkwardly completes it. “I just wish I had something I could trust. Even High Priest Koa let something like this happen and he hasn’t come to see me.” She sighs. “What if we’ve been fooling ourselves?”

A small bit of time passes as she nibbles her bread. You finally work up the courage to talk about the big thing on your mind. “I’ve learned a bit about it since I’ve been here. Rayquaza seems, uh, interesting.”

She’s still nibbling the bread, but faster. She looks like she’s gotten her appetite back. “The great protector? He opened the path to the next world after saving us.”

“What happened next?”

“Well, first, all the lost spirits finally were able to go, so there was a great tsunami of them. Then, when things settled, we rebuilt. And we formed the temples after the examples that were left, and we made sure to bless every dead person or pokemon when they passed so that they’d have a good journey. But we became complacent with it. And after a time when he let our discipline slip, there was a great earthquake! So we began offering things through the pathway to the afterlife. It was food that worked best, so that’s what we did. The spirits sometimes miss the comforts of their old lives, even in the beyond.” Her tone swings from matter-of-fact to almost skeptical of what’s coming out of her mouth.

“Has Rayquaza ever contacted anyone? From the beyond?”

She looks up and squints. “Some people say that, but nothing that’s been canonized. You know, confirmed.” Again, her tone is telling of what feels like realizations cropping up in her head. “Wait. Herb. Why are you asking?”

The sound of the artificial fountain is distracting you as you try to think.

You look at your friend. Her crushed spirit. Her low point. Her

“I had a dream.” You emphasize the last word. “And um, in it, I saw what looked like a pokemon. Rayquaza.”

“The great protector.” She says flatly.

“Uhh, yeah. And we talked about a bunch of stuff, and he showed me the past.”

She’s done eating, and she leans in closer. The short priestess hangs off your every word now. “He did?”

“Yah!” You’re relieved. She’s not freaking out. “And it felt so real. It was after I found that bone, remember?”

She nods. “What happened?”

“Well, afterwards I fed him some pancakes, but before then-”

“Pancakes.”

“Yeah. Really fluffy ones, and I-”

She cracks in giggling. “You fed the great protector pancakes!”

You’re glad she’s happy, but you feel like you’re losing her. “Yes. But the main point is that I don’t think he-”

She laughs even louder. This time, drawing in some eyes from the various people coming and going in the massive, cold, lobby. “Pancakes!”

“Keira...”

“I’m sorry, Herb.” She brings it down, but can’t fully contain it. “I believe you had a very convincing dream. But the great protector would be beyond comfort food!” She laughs until she snorts.

Maybe give it a day or two so we're away from the temple and things have quieted down, then ask again.

We can trust Keira, I would think, but she's emotionally distraught right now and a temple probably isn't the best place to discuss this if we don't want this spreading.
>>
You pick up her hand and hold it. “Keira. Whatever’s real, here’s what I know. treasure your friendship. You’re a great person. A good person. And your life and your religion up to now has helped form who you are.”

“Herb...” Even through the mask and face paint, you can feel that she’s blushing. She gives your hand a little squeeze. “I treasure you too. I-I mean, your friendship!” She takes her hand away. “Umm, you’d better go see what your girls want.”

You glance over. Hana and Laki look like they’re growing impatient. “Right. Okay. Thanks.”

She runs off to go talk to a plant. Despite it being surrounded by plastic and metal, she thinks it’s very pretty.

You catch up to Hana and Laki. They start walking towards what you assume are where the conservationists are, and you follow. “You and Keira are looking close.” Laki says. “Still feeling that perfume?”

“Huh? No. Why do you ask?”

“Nevermind.” She gives you a half-hearted smile and a quick tussle. “You just don’t get too many ideas when you’ve got hungry pokemon at home.”

“I’m okay with ideas.” Hana’s voice is barely audible as she plays with her hair and looks away.

“What do you know about the conservationists?” Laki asks you and Hana.

Hana pretends she didn’t hear so she doesn’t have to answer. Sometimes it feels like she’s embarrassed at her lack of knowledge about the islands. She doesn’t seem interested in learning, though.

“Not much.” you say. “What?”

“They’ve got a reputation of being a bit antisocial.”

“That’s not such a bad thing, is it?” Hana says, looking at her shoes. She picks up her Togepi.

“Not like that. They’re not shy. Got anything to offer them?”

“Is that something we’re supposed to do? Give them stuff?”

“It’s a custom when asking for their help, but not required. It helps, though.”

“That’s your solution to everything.” Laki lightly mocks.

“Is that bad?”

“What?” She stops walking for a second. “No! No. Don’t stop cooking. Seriously. That’s not what I’m saying.” She throws her hands up. “Trust me. Nobody wants that to stop.”

“I mean, I could help them out with odd jobs.”

“As long as you don’t stop cooking for us.” Hana says.

“Robocop gets it.” Laki says. Bella helps emphasize her point.

You walk for a long time. You’re going way outside the temple and into the nearby forested area. The overhead canopy casts a soft, cool shade.

You’re about to ask about where they are when you hear shouting. You, your pokemon, Hana, and Laki all rush over to investigate. You peer through some bushes and see what look like temple acolytes being overrun by bug pokemon. Most of them are little purple ones with big, buggy eyes, but there are a few others.

The acolytes aren’t being attacked directly, but the rush of pokemon coming over them looks like it’s knocking a few of them over and really scattering their stuff. One boy about your age is knocked over and his pokeball is kicked across the clearing. He looks uninjured, but upset.

A Scyther comes flying in his general direction.

Scyther comes rushing in, and you act before you think. Your foot kicks off at the same time you swing your backpack around to unhook your lucky frying pan. With one motion, you bring it up and in the way of Scyther.

CLANG! A bone-jolting sensation runs through you from the impact, but you keep your feet on the ground. Some sparks fly as his blade skids off the edge after the initial impact. His momentum makes you skid back a little. He flies back to get some distance and size you up.

But something about his posture bothers you. He doesn’t try to attack and doesn’t seem frustrated. He looks like he has other things on his mind, and you’re just a roadblock. His wings start up and kick some dust off the ground. Then, with a loud flapping noise, he snaps up into the air and flies in the same direction he was going.

You’re feeling confused, but also pretty cool. At least, until Hana collides into you a second later. You fall into a pile of limbs.

“Are you okay?” The very heavy girl on top of you asks.

“Yup.” You squeeze out with whatever breath you still have.

“Oh. Good. Umm, sorry.” She mutters. “Heh, this is just like in a show where two people collide and fall and then there’s a bunch of sexual tension. Umm, not that that’d be weird, since you know. We’re together. But there’s still that little thrill from stuff like that, right? I mean, I don’t want to assume what you’re feeling, but it is sort of funny and cute and not a ‘Hana ruined the moment’ thing, right? Boy, that sounds insecure. Not in a fun way either, but-”

“Come on.” Laki helps Hana up with a grunt. “You can stop.”

“Oh thank you.” Hana mumbles and hides herself.

“You there.” The boy says. “What did you do?”

“Me? Oh. I just got luck with this frying pan. It’s really sturdy. I-”

“Those pokemon can’t afford to spend their energy like that. Couldn’t you see that? They’re hungry!”

“He helped you!” Hana says quietly but firmly.

“With what? I was going to tag that pokemon so I could track it’s path and find out where they’re going. And...what’s going on with your arm? What is that, some sort of metal?”

“I thought you were in danger and acted. I apologize for the misunderstanding.” You bow. “I’m John, but my friends call me Herb.”

“I...yes. Well, I suppose we all make mistakes.” He looks taken by surprise by your gesture. “Like being rude to strangers.” He bows back. “I am Tokowi. You can call me To.”

Laki and Hana both introduce themselves too. His eyes keep staring at her arm, but she doesn’t seem that bothered.

A few other acolytes gather around to meet your group. Most of them are busy cleaning up from the mess left by that swarm of bugs.

“I didn’t know they migrated this time of year.” Laki says.

“They don’t. For some reason, they’re moving this way from the East. And they’re hungry. It’s like they suddenly have competition for food out there. But no new pokemon have been spotted in that area.”

Laki and Hana both look at each other.

“Oh no.” Your heart sinks. “The Murkrow.”

“You know what caused this?” His formerly friendly tone is going back to the angry again.

“I, umm, yeah.” Oh boy. Today’s just a day for honesty, isn’t it? “It’s like this...” You explain about the Murkrow and Honchkrow, and how they became dependent on food from a junk trader, and how you and your friends taught them to scavenge for food in the wild again.

“Mainlanders.” He mutters. The others seem more interested in the details of the story, for the most part. The number of Murkrow, any details you can remember about their groupings and nesting habits, that sort of thing.

“Why isn’t there enough food, if there are no new pokemon?” You ask.

“Isn’t it obvious? There was at first, but since the Murkrow got a new food source, the bugs were able to grow in numbers using their old food sources. Now they’re above carrying capacity. And it’s your fault!” He points at you.

“No it’s not!” Hana’s voice cracks. “I mean, we helped too, but that’s not the point I’m making. Who’s in charge of keeping track of this sort of thing? Who let that mess happen in the first place? Herb just took the first steps towards fixing it and you’re giving him a hard time about it? That’s unfair!”

“Hana.” Laki puts a hand on her shoulder to pull her back. “They’re clergy.”

“And fools.” A man emerges from the brush. “She’s correct. We’ve heard of no problems, and so we never bothered checking up. Like a fungus under a carpet, this problem festered under our feet, and now it’s become unmanageable.” He glances at you. “Herb, yes? I am pleased to meet you. High priest Koa has explained the idea.”

“Does that mean you’re in?”

“I’m uncertain. I have duties to take care of first.” He glances off at nothing. There’s something about the way he speaks that’s almost hypnotic. Not in a charming way, but in a way where he’s one step closer to nature. His wooden staff looks like just a stick at first, but on closer inspection you can see subtle but intricate decorations etched into it.

“The Murkrow, right? What’s going to happen with them?”

“Well, that’s a good question. Without a new food source for either the Murkrow or the bug pokemon, the population of the Bug pokemon will continue to migrate and either displace another population, or collapse. But it’s not the only issue we’re dealing with right now. There are Staryus washed too high up on the beach that need to be...directed off before they disturb things too much. There is a report of a mainland bird, and we must make investigate it before it breeds. Finally, there’s a strange rumor of a psychic pokemon in the abandoned city that’s...disturbing.”

It's a masterwork, cast-iron frying pan. At first, it was an ordinary pan, but as it saves our hides, it gathers belief that it is a thing of power from the pokemon it has stymied and thus it has become so.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy and an antithesis of Herb's pessimism.

The moment he realises that, is when its power fails and it goes back to being a cast-iron frying pan: Still useful but without it's quasi-mystical pokemon-stopping power.

The problem being that finding a new stable food source is gonna take more than a group of teenagers, we could attempt it later but for now lets focus on what we can do right here and now
>>
>>1942729
It'd work as an overarching goal while we tackle everything else.
>>
“I can help with one of those. What about that spooky psychic?”

He glances down at you for a moment. He’s like a tree made into a man. His skin looks tough, like bark, but still human. You get the strange thought that if you tried to push him, he’d be as immovable as an oak.

“That seems like the appropriately scaled task for your Powla.”

“But, they’re not conservationists.” The boy you helped earlier protests. He shrinks under the gaze of his leader, though.

“Young sapling. They taught the Murkow to be pokemon again.”

“But...that caused this problem!”

“You’re not seeing the whole ecosystem.” He says. You’re expecting him to deliver a stern chiding, but instead, he chuckles. “It is alright. Besides, the first rule is conservation of energy. Do you want to go tonight yourself to investigate those rumours of that scary psychic pokemon?”

He doesn’t answer, stewing in uncertainty. “Then, I’ll handle the food supply?”

“That is beyond your capabilities. And my own. But I have a plan.” He turns back to you. “You’re brave to take this task, children. Guard your minds well and remember there is no shame in running if you’re nerves can’t handle it. Report what you find to me if it’s something not easy to solve. It is likely nothing but a particularly curious or eccentric wild pokemon. It’s only seen at night in the abandoned buildings. Knowing the species would be a great help.”

Laki and Hana both look unnerved about this.

Not to mention the Pokedex says Garevoir can create small black holes with their psychic powers.
>>
>>1942854
Well, why don’t we bring along Murkbro? He’ll be immune to psychic fuckery, and it’ll help us make our case that the Murkrow population would make effective environmental stewards.

Gobble will have to be careful Male and Female Gardevoir are visually identical.
>>
>>1942869
That's actually an excellent point either way.

Murkrow probably wants to make sure its sister is fine, but I've kind of been hoping for it to join the team since it was introduced.

I mean, I don’t want to catch him. I feel like he has a life here looking after his people, and his sister especially.

A male Gardevoir having masculinity issues has been done before, but it'd be an interesting arc for Herb.

I just realise we don't have any pokemon that can produce anything we can use for ingredients, we don't have anything like a vespiquen or a miltank

If we didn’t have Sorbet already, I’d be hoping to catch a Mime Jr. from this.

“What’s a Powla?” You whisper to Laki.

“Like a mini tribe. A clique or group.” She whispers back. “He probably hasn’t put it together that we’re your lovers.” She gives you a subtle little poke. “Don’t be afraid to show it. A girl doesn’t mind.”

Oh boy. That look she’s giving. You muster enough willpower to pull you eyes off of her and back to the conservationist leader. “I have a question. What sort of rumors are there about that pokemon?”

“It only appears at night.” His deep, penetrating voice announces. You think there’s an accent there, but it’s hard to tell. It might just be a quirk of his voice. “And those that see it are filled with terror before fleeing. They say the pokemon that are around, there’s or wild ones, act strangely as well. There is no consistent story of it’s form, but it seems to appear to small groups or lone travellers. Vulnerable, easy prey.”

“Thanks. We’ll check it out and tell you everyone when we get back.” you announce, looking between Hana and Laki to see if there are any objections. They don’t voice any.

“Good luck, young ones. And should things not go your way, do not lose hope. I’ve heard there is a Ghost Priestess in the area. Your journey to the afterlife will be an easy one.”

Everyone looks at his stone face. He holds his serious gaze just long enough to convince you before cracking and laughing. The deep boom of his voice has a comforting quality to it, and you can’t help but laugh too.

With spirits lifted, you head out. You’re planning on arriving early so you have time to prepare.

“So, scary pokemon at night.” Laki says. “Well, it could be worse. We could be listening to that annoying redhead. Can you believe they way she’s trying to hit on you?” She puts an arm on your shoulder. “You’ve got your hands full with us, right?”

“She doesn’t seem that bad.” Hana says.

“Not that bad...She’s a troublemaker. She just likes ticking me off for no reason. Real issues with needing attention, I bet.”

You cooly put your hands around their hips. Oh man. Why do girls feel so nice? Why are they letting you do that? It feels more exciting than it should.

“I sound like a Delcatty gossip.” Laki stops herself. “Guess I’m finally acting girly, at least.”

“You’re more womanly than girly.” Hana says, leaning back to look at Laki’s behind as you walk.

“Uh, thanks.” Laki isn’t sure how to respond to that. There’s an awkward silence.

“Well, I don’t think it’s right to badmouth people behind their back.” You break it. “But-”

“But you know I’d say it to her pimply, freckled face?”

“I was just going to say it’s good to vent. It’s okay. And for the record, I’m not going after other girls.”

“I wouldn’t mind...” Hana almost whispers.

Laki sighs. “I don’t know why I let her get me worked up. She just knows how to bug me. Like she can see every possible move that makes me angry and she goes for it. Why? What’s her problem? Is it because I’m big? Did jocks pick on her? Is she just after you? If that’s the case why isn’t she picking on Hana? What’s her problem?”

“I’m not really competition.” Hana gives a nervous laugh. “I mean, not compared to that badonkadonk, am I right?” She leans into your arm and gives Laki a soft slap on the ass.

“Uh, yeah...” Laki looks away. “I’m just saying. If Abigail keeps it up I’m going to lay her out.”

You’ve noticed a few times that Hana has been trying to get more of Laki’s attention and she’s been brushed off. It’s weird, given the other night and how Laki and Hana...did stuff. Maybe it’s an emotional intimacy thing. Or maybe Laki isn’t that comfortable with it outside the heat of the moment. You’re already feeling your palms get a little sweaty just holding them both by the hips. It’s easy to let this stuff get to you.

According to Herb's dad, almost all the girls in the islands are on birth control in the form of those flowers.

Also Hana's infertile and both of them explicitly want to get creamed, so condoms are both unnecessary and VERBOTEN.

Here's how I see it. Pregnancy would be a huge, quest-defining event. If Gobble wants to write that sort of story, then the condom will pop. If he doesn't, no amount of raw sex will knock anybody up.
>Besides, condoms can be sexy too.
Blasphemy.
>>
>>1944840
You know how condoms come in little square packages, connected by perforated lines? Imagine that thing where a girl is holding what looks like one condom, but then shifts a finger and lets the long line of condoms drop down, an implicit sign of how much sex she’s planning on having with you.

Imagine being in line to buy the condoms, purchasing them, and then instead of going to buy their own items, the line of girls behind you walks out by your side.
>>
>>1944874
Anon, the only sexy thing a girl can do with a condom is take it out of your hands and throw it away.

You decide not to get involved. They’ll figure out what works for them. Truth be told, you’re still really unsure about a lot in terms of what your own boundaries and expectations are.

“So, do you have any thoughts on the psychic pokemon?”

Hana laughs. “I get it. Good one. You know, because thoughts, and psychic pokemon. And, yeah...” She trails off when she realizes she’s the only one laughing.

“I think it’s a Hypno.” Laki says. “Going after loners or small groups. It’s got to be.”

“I like them.” Hana says. “They used to have them at the children’s hospital. You know, to help some of the kids with bad dreams...” She looks a little awkward at bringing that up. “Oh, but Laki, what if it’s a...” Hana leans in to whisper to Laki.

Laki’s eyes go wide and she glances down to you. “In that case, you’re in charge of holding Soft Hands in case he tries to run for it. But I don’t know. That doesn’t seem as likely. It’s got to be a Hypno or maybe a Munna. Oh, or playing the odds, maybe a Raichu. I’ve never heard of them messing with heads before, but we got a lot of them around so who knows.”

You know exactly what Hana whispered to Laki. The fact that she felt the need to do that makes you feel that much more ashamed of your phobia. It’s not fault, but it stings the ego just a bit.

“How are we going to find it?” Laki asks. “Run around the abandoned town at night looking like easy targets?”

”If this were a horror movie that would work.” Hana says. “Of course, the first target would be the teens having-” She pauses, then leans against you. “What do you think?”

That's a good question. You've got a lot of time to prepare. If you don't have any pans that require a lot of setup, you could just spend the time mentally preparing yourself or training.

“I think we should split up.”

“Seriously?” Laki and Hana both react pretty much the same.

“I was joking about doing horror movie things.” Hana says.

“It’s just a pokemon.” You say, still feeling the sting to your pride. “We’ll all be fine, as long as we have our own pokemon by our side.” Your little guys all seem to react to that.

“Huh.” Laki says, trying to evaluate you. “You’re not just doing this to impress us, are you?”

“No. I really think it's a good idea. If we’re in a big group we might scare it so much that it doesn’t show up.”

“That’s my Soft Hands. Always thinking from someone else's perspective. Okay. Whoo. Yeah. we’ll be fine.” She sounds like she’s convincing herself.

“Are you going to be okay?” Hana asks.

“Yeah! Of course! Sheesh. What about you? You’ve probably seen enough horror movies to fill your head with all sorts of ideas.”

“I...” Hana starts to think. “Oh. Yeah. That could be scary.”

The two girls sit around for a bit. Hana starts talking about some extra scary movies, and Laki pretends like she’s above considering them seriously. She does let it slip and asks Hana hopefully if the teens get away, though.

You working on trying to summon Murkrow. It takes a little effort, but you go to the larger clearing in the area, still within view of the girls, and start cooking up the most aromic version of what he seemed to like before. It doesn’t take long before a few of them come down. Thankfully, he’s among them, and no other types of pokemon have shown up yet.

He caws, and takes out his bundle.

“Actually, I wanted to ask you a favor.”

He cocks his head. You explain about the mysterious psychic pokemon and ask for his help. He considers it for a moment and caws again, motioning to his bundle.

“You want to know what I’ll give you?”

He caws again. You suspect this will determine how much effort he’ll give in exchange.

>You’ll owe him a big favor
>What about a nice accessory so you look your best?

What can you offer? He seems like he’s eating well. No, he’s eating enough. Eating well would mean getting well prepared food. Still, you don’t know if that’d be something he’s too concerned about. He seems like he thinks in the long term.

“Oh! I know! I can help you unlock your hidden potential. You can use it to help protect you sister and defend yourself. You’re a good guy, I know you’d use it responsibly.”

He looks to your pokemon, and, based on their reactions, nods. He’s in.

“Great! This will be fun.” You feels your confidence rising. You’ve dealt with lots of wild pokemon by now. You and your friends can handle whatever this is. You glance over to Hana and Laki, and they seem to be getting ready.

To your surprise, Laki is working on some sort of branch based trap. It doesn't look like it’d hurt a pokemon, but it might snag on them and slow them down. She seems to be having a little trouble twisting the branches and grass the way she wants, but she eventually gets it.

Hana is going over some sort of plan with her pokemon and getting ready to head off. You didn’t catch all of what she said, but the jist of it seemed to be that she’s going to scout the area she’ll be looking in as well as she can so she knows every inch.

Murkrow and your pokemon look to you. They’ve overheard and know the general idea, but want to know if you have a plan for the area you’ll be covering

You explain the plan. It’s simple. Simple is good. Murkrow will fly overhead, and when he spots it, he’ll let you know and you can all follow. Since he’s a dark type he’ll be safe to scout and fly over it.

“Sound nice?”

Nobody has any objections. It’s simple enough that there aren’t any obvious flaws that come out at anyone.

“Murkrow, what will you do when you find it?”

He caws. It’s not clear what exactly he plans, but it sounds like he’s sure you’ll notice.

“Okay. Just be careful.”

He gives a cocky little jig and settles in to take a nap. You look up at the sky. The sun won’t set for a bit yet. You have some time to spend.

Aura stuff as it relates to psychic stuff.
>>
You take out your pokedex and settle in. It’s going to be awhile. You start looking up the Psychic typing, it’s weaknesses and strengths, different pokemon in the dex, moves, and general behaviors and abilities.

What’s more though, you look into anything that mentions aura in any related articles. There isn’t much, but there are some psychics that fight using aura powers. It seems like there’s a lot there isn’t known about it. This Jeanine person wrote a small article about the relationship between aura and fighting types as well. Oh hey, she’s apparently a mystery author too. That’s a strange career trajectory. You wonder if a lot of people have those sorts of changes. Its-

Oh wow. It got late quickly! You gently wake up Bella, Dice, and Gobble who have fallen asleep on you. Sorbet is close by, playfully freezing water in a small pond. Sometimes she isn’t fast enough and she gets her paw wet. Bella is bothering Murkrow with what looks like all sorts of questions.

Laki is in the distance heading towards the town. Hana already left a long time ago.

“Alright! Is everyone ready?”

They all give the affirmative. You guess it’s time to go into town and let Murkrow scout

>>
“Let’s go!”

Murkrow kicks off and vanishes into the dark sky. If you concentrate, you can sort of find him sometimes when you see stars disappear and reappear above.

You follow him as best you can below, finding a nice, open street. You guess this is a good central point to wait and watch. You have a decent view of the sky.

The abandoned town is, well, spooky. Cracked pavement with plants forcing their way through, broken and boarded up windows, rusted out street signs, and debris everywhere.

Mace jumps and faces towards a dumpster, making you almost drop your heart into your stomach.

“What is it?”

He lowers his body a little, preparing for action. But nothing happens.

You dare a few quick glances around, but see no sign from Murkrow. Bella prepares to launch Pin Missiles, Sorbet has her tails puffed out even more than usual, Gobble has a fighting stance, and Dice just plops onto the middle of the street and plays with a rock.

>Ignore it. It’s probably just a Ratata

“It’s okay. I’ll open it.” You’re not sure why you announce that out loud. Maybe just hearing yourself talk makes the situation seem more like it’s in your control.

“Here goes.” you say out loud. Your pokemon all get ready to act. Mace is right at your side. You think if you made any sudden movements you might set him off.

You flip open the dumpster lid. Immediately you’re faced with a massive wild pokemon. It leaps out at you! Your first instinct is to bring your pan up to your defense, but you leap back instead. Something about using the pan felt off. It’s only after you acted that you get what your brain was telling you. It’s a blob! It seems strange in the darkness, but you swear it's like a rainbow.

Mace shoots himself up in front of you and aims an attack.

“Mace! Hold on.” You put a hand on him, then step forward. Every second counts, but you need to make sure you project calmness and peace. “Excuse me, sir?”

It slows as it looks back. Seeing a lack of attacks you your calm demeanor, it slows more until it comes to a stop. It points to itself.

“Yes. Sorry to bother you. I’m looking for a psychic type pokemon. Have you seen one around here?”

He looks exhausted. Exhausted and scared. He shakes his head, then turns to leave. But he stops. He tries to motion for you to leave to.

Gobble determinedly yells up to you. You can’t understand him exactly, but you get the general idea. This pokemon does know about the psychic! But he’s trying to warn you to leave.

“I don’t understand! Is it bullying you?”

It looks left and right, like it’s worried the pokemon will appear any second now. It waves for you to leave. At the same time, he’s looking a bit hungrily at your frying pan. You put a hand on it out of concern.

Hm. In that I can only assume that whatever is doing this is using the move "nightmare." Unlike dream eater, it's not a psychic move, and could actually affect a dark type.

There are a lot of pokemon that can learn nightmare, but the ones that learn it by level up and are psychic type are Munna and Hypno.

Assuming it is a psychic type that got into a tm, it could also be an abra/slowpoke/exeggcute/starmie/mr. mime/smoochum/natu/espeon/girafarig/raltz/chimecho, and their evolved forms.

Assuming it could be using the nightmares to pretend to be psychic, it could be a whole host of other things too, like lickitung, dunsparce, or butterfree.

“If you help me, we can stop any bullying together. But I’m afraid my frying pan is off limits.” You laugh. You step forward casually to show there’s no reason to be tense.

It doesn’t leave or run away, but it still looks pretty nervous.

“You don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to, but if you could help me find it, that’d really help.”

He sniffs and gets close. Gobble, seeming to sense what’s going on, grabs something from your bag. It’s just a mostly empty little sugar sack. He licks it clean then tosses it over.

The goopy pokemon cautiously sniffs around it before greedily consuming it.

You wish Gobble had asked you first, but you guess that works. It seems to have made it more agreeable.

It looks around some more. Before you get a solid answer, you hear a loud caw in the sky! When you glance, you see huge, disconnected eyes floating, and staring down at something. They flash and twinkle away. It’s the move Mean Look! That clever Murkrow! That’ll keep the psychic from running away!

You rush in that direction, and your pokemon follow. You glance back and see the goopy Muk-like pokemon sort of following too. He’s keeping his distance, but he’s staying within a line of sight. He must be curious, at least.

You arrive pretty close to the spot. Another glance at the sky shows you nothing. You wonder if Murkrow is still up there. At least, until you see a pink blast rise up after him. And what’s more, the closer you get, the more you notice a soft, pink mist as well. It leaves you with a sense of protection, though.

There’s a figure standing in it. As far as you know, it hasn’t seen you yet. It’s looking up in the sky.

>Come out and say hi
>Hit it with a status move

You come out of your hiding spot and stand tall.

“Hi.”

It turns to you. The figure becomes slightly clearer in the mist. You feel a slight tickle in your brain and very naked for some reason.

But you press on. “I’m Herb. I’d like to talk. Is it okay if I come cl-”

There’s a sudden burst of forcing sending you flying back. You’re like a helpless doll being blown away. You slam back into something and feel very heavy after.

Your eyelids lower and you body gently touches the ground. For one quick flash of sober thought, you fight back against the urge, but it’s washed away under the weight of your own body and sweet dreams you’re sure to experience.

But why does that worry you? Why does your head hurt? Something happened. What was it again? Everything is so...foggy.

Your brain slowly gets itself back together. As the fog around the street begins to fade away, the fog in your mind does too. When you look up, you see a face staring right back down at you, and terror filling your heart

>>
>>1947360
Well, the Gardevior only comes out at night, is scaring off anyone who approaches the abandoned city, and they are generally described as being fiercely loyal towards their trainers.

I'm think that maybe something bad happened to it's trainer and it's been sticking around here ever since. Maybe their trainer is a Ghost Pokemon now and it doesn't know what to do about it, and is doing whatever it can to keep anyone away.
>>
>>1947358
Gosh, it feels like forever since we've called up Polu or Val or Mom. I wanna see their reactions to our good news. I guess that's not really a question though.

Gobble, you're not going to do any pregnancy scare plots, right? That fertility roll for Laki from a bit back has me spooked.

If Laki and Hana start dating each other, can Laki or Hana challenge Herb for leadership of the Harem?
>>
>>1947360
Well, the cliche would be an abusive trainer, so it's bitter worldview is thrown for a loop when it encounters somebody who actually is a good person, IE Herb

I expect it'll be subverted somehow though
>>
>>1947371
Maybe he's been bullied for being girly.
>>
>>1947371
It is cliche, but there's a lot you can do with it.

Factor in that in the games most trainers are around ten years old and despite how the cliche would be a depressingly common case.

Even if the 'never ascribe to malice what could more easily be explained by stupidity', proverb would probably apply in a lot of cases.

I'm actually looking forward to how this pans out, because you can bet Gobble is actually going to at least acknowledge how ethically grey raising the Ralts line would be.

Not that I want an edgy or dark story but it gets pretty damn murky when you think about it.

The Ralts line are highly empathic and it's implied from their 'dex entries that Kirlia and Gardevoir\Gallade at least are quite intelligent.

Considering that same empathy, making them battle, they'd feel their opponent's aggression, along with the emotions of their trainer and the opposing trainer, which must be confusing to say the least.

Then there's how 'human' the whole line is.

Then again, I could easily be overthinking the whole thing.
>>
>>1947925
I actually reckon that raising the ralts line or accepting this gardevoir would be something very Herb to do. Empathy just amplifies that.
>>
>>1947964
I agree, it's just been not addressed so far because it kept starting flame wars.

>Gobble, you're not going to do any pregnancy scare plots, right?
[To be honest I don't know how to answer. It'd be pretty heavy compared to the rest of the campaign so far, but at the same time, I think it would leave a lot of options for Herbs' arc and discovery of his masculinity.]

>If Laki and Hana start dating each other, can Laki or Hana challenge Herb for leadership of the Harem?
[That's a good question. I need time to think. Please follow up with me by the next thread if I forget to post about it between now and then.]
>>
>>1948897
Hm. I’ve got some other questions too, now that I think about it. I’ll just let you decide what should be left to in-character discovery.

What does being the leader of a Harem, as opposed to a non-leader member, even entail?

When is Hana going to properly introduce us to Kat, Robin, and Clair?

Do Herb’s abilities stem from being able to use potential unlocking on himself?

Why hasn’t Herb experimented using his healing on himself or his potential unlocking in humans?

What does Hana think of Herb’s scar he got from Dice?

How many condoms did Dad sneak us?

How close is Laki to a plan for whooping Jane?

How are the kekleon settling in?

Is Gardevoir native to Loanah?

What’s the name of Loanah’s religion?

When Hana says she wouldn’t mind Herb going after more girls, is she speaking from a sexual or emotional standpoint or what? Is she dreaming big dreams of free love? Or does she have her eye on specific people?

Has Dad told Mom about our unique relationship situation yet? I was expecting a call from her once she found out.

Does Herb know how to make poke-blocks?
>>
>>1948897
The main problem i think a lot of people would have with any of the girls being harem leader is that they would try to bring in more guys and considering we haven't brought in more girls it would create a situation in which the anons would be frothing at the mouth with rage
>>
>>1951081
I think it’s much more likely they’d be trying to organize foursomes than adding sal-mates.

And in that case, we might get to see some really hot stuff.
>>
>>1951424
unless the other person joining in is another girl don't expect the anons to be up for a foursome with their waifus if another guy is involved, which i can understand cause chance of pregnancy from the other guy and all that
>>
>>1951471
I think we’ve seen that you can have a fun time without risk of pregnancy.

Herb can bang Laki and Polu can bang Hana and whoever puts their girl over the edge the most wins.

Or maybe they’ll want to invite Val, and Laki can have her golden combo.

All of this assumes that Herb and Laki are up for casual foursomes, and there is somebody the three of them can agree on.

But more than any of that, I’d like to see Laki challenge Herb for leadership of the Harem so she can more confidently face her parents. What she would do with that leadership is a question for afterwards.
>>
>>1952017
As long as Laki and Herb are okay with it I'd be okay with indulging Hana's more perverse stuff like the foursomes and such. Though I know for a fact that I'm an outlier and a filthy harem supporter.

I will admit I'm happy that chat's been a lot more subdued/happy feeling since the great waifuwar of 2017. Kinda sad that people were so up in arms about it that they'd drop the quest over getting with two hot ladies but still far happier than otherwise,

Wouldn't mind seeing Laki be in charge of the harem either, it'd be a fun start of a dynamic. Where instead of the harem sharing the same leader the leader will periodically change after some time or a condition like wrassling.
>>
Rolled 71 + 1 (1d100 + 1)

>>1952155
You have me curious. Who does your ideal harem include? Laki probably wouldn’t be comfortable being intimate with a priestess, and she hates Jane’s guts, and Polu has romantic goals of his own. The only one I can see maybe, maybe joining is Val, if Laki takes the leadership and decides to expand.

Or Abigail, if she joins the main cast and develops that way.
>>
>>1952704
Ideal harem, full on wish fulfillment? Herb, Hana, Laki, Kiera, Valerie and now Abigail.

Realistically? I can --maybe-- see Kiera. Maybe. Because I know that Laki was INITIALLY uncomfortable with being intimate with a priestess but now, after Kiera's repeated insistence on being casual, I could see her being fine with her on a mental level. I mean if Laki really cared so much about the intimacy stigma with the clergy why would she have encouraged Herb in the first place to "get some" with her?

Valerie I just miss, she was a nice "middle" ground of the other three characters. A little perversion, a little uncertainty over her position in the world, some confidence issues and becoming her own lady. It's been kind of sad that we've missed out so much together. Especially if she hasn't found anyone else to travel with.

Jane was never even on my radar for being a romantic option. She's soured my opinion of her too much in almost every single interaction.
>>
>>1952732
>Jane was never even on my radar for being a romantic option

Being a Janefag is suffering.
>>
>>1952732
And Abigail because?

Personally, I wish we had experimented with Polu some, before ultimately deciding that while there was physical attraction, there weren’t romantic feelings.

And the day Jane figures out we’re not secretly plotting anything feels long overdue to me. It feels like she hasn’t really been able to grow as a character when she keeps getting reset back to her paranoid, single-digit thread # self.

Keira’s cute, but I think what we have with her and have had with her is enough for me.

Abigail because she feels like a good character that could definitely end up being one of Laki's friends. The kind of everlasting friendship where they'll get pissed at each other, throw a few punches, laugh about it and make up with a pint. I just think she's been a great character to be around and I love seeing the two rocket into each other. Though again that was in my dream scenario, I don't actually expect it to happen.

Something tells me Kiera's going to be growing up a lot in the near future, whether Herb's there or not. Also I think there's a lot there between the entire group already, even Anon's could agree when it came up that Kiera and Herb were very alike in their attitudes. It's really not that weird. Herb's a cutie and Polu's a lean muscle man. Already better than 50% of yaoi fics. Would definitely give it a read even if it doesn't get my boner boner racing I know my heart boner would probably be full mast.

>What does being the leader of a Harem, as opposed to a non-leader member, even entail?
[Good question! The main thing is setting the universally applied rules.]

>When is Hana going to properly introduce us to Kat, Robin, and Clair?
[Hana really doesn't want to bother them. She's done enough of that already. But maybe eventually, when they're not busy, she actually believes things won't go horribly wrong and it's dumb to get her hopes up, and she isn't feeling as inadequite in their presence since she isn't really smart like Robin, a good battler like Kat, or as quick with a joke as Clair.]

>Do Herb’s abilities stem from being able to use potential unlocking on himself?
[Nah. But that's an interesting idea]

>Why hasn’t Herb experimented using his healing on himself or his potential unlocking in humans?
[It hasn't come up in quest. But more than that, I feel like Herb is still sort of coming to terms with it and not really giving it as much conscious thought because he's just that sort of guy. Herbs mind is always on everyone but himself, it seems.]

>What does Hana think of Herb’s scar he got from Dice?
[Hot. Also sweet.]

>How many condoms did Dad sneak us?
[Not enough for when it finally happens.]

>How close is Laki to a plan for whooping Jane?
[She keeps psyching herself out. She thinks she's got a good plan going, but scraps it halfway through by overthinking it and getting worried that it wouldn't work.]

>How are the kekleon settling in?
[Fantastically. There was a bit of an adjustment period where food was a concern because they didn't understand the new island, but they're crafty and work as a community]

>Is Gardevoir native to Loanah?
[No, but they were introduced so long ago that it's not well known that they aren't]

>What’s the name of Loanah’s religion?
[I have trouble with names.]

>When Hana says she wouldn’t mind Herb going after more girls, is she speaking from a sexual or emotional standpoint or what? Is she dreaming big dreams of free love? Or does she have her eye on specific people?
[Sexual is a big part. But she'd like to reserve some special emotional intimacy for herself.]

>Has Dad told Mom about our unique relationship situation yet? I was expecting a call from her once she found out.
[He made her promise not to call for awhile before he'd tell her. He figured it'd be nicer for you if she's had some time to let it settle in. She's been fretting, but he keeps her busy.]

>Does Herb know how to make poke-blocks?
[Surprisingly, no! Although he could probably fake it or figure out an alternative that accomplishes the same thing.]
>>
>>1953727
Wow, thanks! This is cool. Let's see if I've got any more...

As for the name of Loanah's religion, if you're open to suggestions, I'd say Mewori. It's a combination of Maori, which is what the practices seem to be based on, and Mew, which is, you know, Mew. If you don't like the idea of Mew being a part of Loanah's faith, that's ok too though. I guess the question is if you're open to suggestions. It's just a frusterating lexical gap, one you think Herb would have filled spending so much time among the clergy.

Palm said a while back that Hana was staying with her aunt and uncle. Hana told the audience she was raped by an uncle. Hana has told the audience she was raised in an orphanage. What's the timeline here? I assume she has two uncles, and when one lost custody, she left for the orpahnage. When her other uncle got a job and a place and old enough, he either got custody or she's just staying there. Or maybe Palm was misinformed. What's going on with all that?

I remember Robin wanted to give Hana a check-up. How patient is Robin going to be for that? (I want an excuse to "meet the parents")

Did Keira forget that we were gonna tell the grass temple guy about the time flower? Or is keeping that secret one of the things bringing her down?

Does Herb give the impression that he has a thing for brown girls who could break him in half?

How did Jane lose that first moon stone we gave her?

How is Jane liking the loanan culture preservation club or whatever it was?

Did we miss that festival?

Now that the shock has worn off, how does Gobble feel about that knockout punch?

(Rhetorical) When will we teach Mace some more moves, especially sandstorm?

How can the conservationist priest be so cool?

What's Murkbro's standing among his flock? I feel like he's got to have some cred for bringing healthy food back.

Not a question, but I really think the Murkrow flock would make a good partner with the conservation branch as a smart, mobile workforce.

Did you decide if the girls could challenge Herb for Harem leadership?

The Gardevoir answer got me thinking. Are Murkrow naitive to Loanah?

That one perfume girl recommended the other ask for a Budew egg, but she never followed up on it. How common is that sort of thing? What is Herb's experience with Pokemon breeding? What is pokemon breeding like for the pokemon involved? Do they not usually care about leaving the eggs behind? How old does a pokemon have to be to breed? Breeding our daughter feels creepy. I take it there's sentiment against mainlander pokemon coming in and becoming popular?

How much tending does invasive species island need? I can only imagine it takes a lot to balance all those pokemon from completely different regions.

What are Loanah's beliefs about solar and lunar eclipses?

Does Loanah have MooMoo Milk?

What duties did the normal temple have before it was banned?

Again, please feel free to not answer any that would be spoilers.

Good tasting worry seed coffee when?

Can we turn mid-battle poetry and stunning fashion into standards of our battle style? How effective/accepted a form of psychological warfare is that?

Has Herb been keeping up his workout routine "offscreen" so to speak?

Is Jane planning on going back to try to catch Hydreigon once she has more badges?

How much work do we have done on Gobble's cook book?

Hana's been very outgoing, what with all this adventuring. She usually likes staying in. How's she holding up?

Can Keira eat marshmallows? They do contain gelatin.

How big of a deal is it that we have three shards?

Does Loanah have aura/fortune reading like Jeanine could do? Or aura massages? Because Those are super cool. Is there a school Herb can go to for aura? I feel like he has a lot of natural talent that could do so much more with some instruction.

Is this amount of questions too much? I feel a little out of place being the only one doing this side of the Q&A.

Imo Jane would be perfect. She's already the rival/pseudo antagonist who has a lot of sexual tension towards herb. With herb breaking her heart (manipulating her, making her open up , then backstabbing her by getting with laki and hana) and the alolan gangs, she could defiantly pull this off

[Works for me!]

[Did I saw it was an uncle that did it? Huh. Oops. Well, yeah. Part of Kat and Robin letting her go on an adventure here was that she'd stay with her aunt and uncle, but that might not be exactly what's going on.]

>I remember Robin wanted to give Hana a check-up. How patient is Robin going to be for that? (I want an excuse to "meet the parents")
[Robin used to get impatient, but she knows what it's like to have people nag her about it so she cuts a lot of slack.]

>Did Keira forget that we were gonna tell the grass temple guy about the time flower? Or is keeping that secret one of the things bringing her down?
[She's completely forgotten due to being down. At first she was waiting for Koa to visit so she could tell him about it, but now she's got other things on her mind.]

>Does Herb give the impression that he has a thing for brown girls who could break him in half?
[Doesn't everybody?]

>How did Jane lose that first moon stone we gave her?
[She was going to have it engraved, but ran into someone that needed it. She had a bit of an internal struggle, but thought of the person that gave it to her and begrudgingly gave it up and ignored any possible lesson on why she got that weak, uncomfortable, warm, fuzzy feeling]

>How is Jane liking the loanan culture preservation club or whatever it was?
[She's glad groups like them exist. She's not making any friends though. She's not very comfortable with big groups. At least, not when she's outside of a position she can boss people around.]

>Did we miss that festival?
[Nope!]

>Now that the shock has worn off, how does Gobble feel about that knockout punch?
[Like a million bucks! He's had some doubts about himself, despite everyone else insisting he's strong. Now he's starting to believe it.]

>How can the conservationist priest be so cool?
[He knows what plants to eat, chew, and smoke. And his job in general gives him a lot of perspective on the big picture, so small details don't bother him]
(continued)
>>
>>1956543

>What's Murkbro's standing among his flock? I feel like he's got to have some cred for bringing healthy food back.
[He's always been a bit of a loner besides his sister, but he's gotten a reputation for being a rogue badass instead of just some bird that keeps to himself and his dealings.]

>Not a question, but I really think the Murkrow flock would make a good partner with the conservation branch as a smart, mobile workforce.

>Did you decide if the girls could challenge Herb for Harem leadership?
[Nah. But they can up and leave if they want. They're not slaves or anything.]

>The Gardevoir answer got me thinking. Are Murkrow naitive to Loanah?
[Yup!]

[Breeding isn't looked down on (unless someone does it in a weird/exploitative way) but it's usually left to people who know a lot about what they're doing. Not really an amateur pursuit. Most pokemon don't care unless they've had some time with the egg. Age varies a lot depending on the pokemon, but they all mature pretty quickly. There's concerns about mainlander pokemon being released and becoming invasive.]

>How much tending does invasive species island need? I can only imagine it takes a lot to balance all those pokemon from completely different regions.
[It didn't used to be that much of an issue, and even when some came in they weren't seen as bad or good or anything, just there. But there have been a few more incidences and it's becoming a bigger issue with more traffic and variation between what comes in]

>What are Loanah's beliefs about solar and lunar eclipses?
[Very big deals. Sun and Moon worship used to be a bigger thing before the Great Protector came, but there's still a lot of culture, holidays, and customs from that time that persist or have been adapted.]

>Does Loanah have MooMoo Milk?
[Yup! Ranchers make great money.]

>What duties did the normal temple have before it was banned?
[It was sort of the defacto central hub of the clergy, and the highest ranked temple in terms of authority. Beyond the authority and administrative stuff, it was a place for celebrating the normal. Everyday hero stuff like moms who go the extra mile, innovators and inventors, local community leaders, etc. Also a more empowering theme of being the underdog (both humans and normal types) but also being the most versatile and clever.]

[Ha! Yeah, that hit me as I was typing.]

[One other thing. I'm going to consider lowering accuracy in general. Or rather, increasing evasion based on a pokemon's speed. Not a huge change, but enough to make combat a little riskier, get the mechanics a little closer to the PTU system, and make move selections more strategic like having circumstances change when a particular move might have a better chance.

What are your thoughts on this?]

Location: Tabo Island, a section of abandoned urban city

You’re pretty sure you’re awake, but that’s exactly what someone who is dreaming would think. But you feel the wind on your face, and you don’t remember dreaming that before, so that makes you lean towards thinking you’re awake and just groggy.

The figure stands a short few feet away, looking down. It’s eyes analyze you. It seems to have forgotten about...whatever it was that was up in the sky. You feel like you should remember that, but it’s exhausting to try.

Woah. Your vision starts to close in. You don’t even know what you should be doing right now. There’s something else though, a tingling in your head. Is that figure causing it? Would being awake make communicating easier, or harder? Does it matter?

You try to muster the strength to fight. But your body just doesn’t want to. Your mind doesn't want to.

But you can do something! You have a power deep inside. What was it called again? It doesn't matter. Too much effort to think. You try to summon it to fix your head and body. You try to get it to work. But it won’t! Your brain is too foggy.

You fade in and out. Unable to dream, unable to really do anything about whatever’s going on. There’s some concerning noises that sound like fighting, then not, and then the sensation of being moved.

When you finally come to, you look around. What happened?

You see your pokemon on one side of the room. Why do they look worried, and what are they doing all the way down there?

Wait, what are you doing all the way up here? You’re pretty high off the ground. You’re...not touching anything!

The adrenaline rush makes the psychic pokemon turn to face you. You didn’t notice it before it’s head turned. You’re in some sort of old factory building or something. The Gardevoir seems to get scared with you. You think you get it. You’re a hostage. Your pokemon must have attacked when you went down. They look pretty roughed up. Especially Mace, who looks knocked out.

You can’t see Dice anywhere. Out of the corner of your eye in a high window, you think you see eyes that might belong to Murkrow, but you can’t be sure and don’t want to dwell on it.

Gobble rallies, seeing that you’re awake, but Gardevoir shakes her hand and you wobble. Gobble keeps his distance but stays on his feet.

Bella is yelling incessantly. She’s very angry at this pokemon. HEr anger seems to invigorate the others again and they test a few steps closer

You slip down a foot suddenly. But there’s something else. A crushing feeling all around you. It doesn’t hurt, but the helpless sensation and implications send a shiver through you.

“Wait!” You tell your pokemon. “Hold on.”

They stay back, but stay tense. Bella wants to rush ahead, but Gobble puts a hand on her to let her know it’s alright. Sorbet is really unsure about what she should be doing and eyes the doorway in case something else is going to appear.

The Gardevoir looks calmer too. She glances back to you. For some reason you think the glance itself is more symbolic than needed. She seems perfectly aware any time a pokemon moves in the room.

A lot of thoughts float in your head, and that tingling sensation is there again. The pokemon seems perfectly able to sort through them, and you can feel that. But it doesn’t latch on to any. It waits for you to choose and verbalize one.

It breathes heavily. It must have battled pretty hard.

It is a sun and it wants an answer!

>Set me down as a show of good faith and let’s talk

“I don’t want to fight.” You explain. It’s hard to resist the urge to compliment or apologize. But there’s also a little bit of unmanly shame that goes with that urge. Like you didn’t really do anything wrong and you’d just be telling it what it wanted to hear. “We don’t want to fight.” You correct. “We never did. I was trying to talk before. That’s all.”

It lowers you slowly, but keeps another hand outstretched towards your other pokemon. But they understand the meaning of your words, and seem to have faith in your diplomatic abilities, and relax a little instead of trying anything.

At least, all the ones in front of the Gardevoir do. Your bad luck rears again. Before you’re all the way down, Dice rolls out from behind a box and gently bites down on Gardevoir’s ankle. It startles the shitake mushrooms out of it and you’re sent flying. Luckily it’s not that big of a distance, but your foot is close enough to a wall that you can kick off a bit on reaction.

>It won’t trust diplomacy a second time! Land on it to try to hold it down

“Dice!” You fumble slightly with your roll, but catch yourself and use your momentum to scoop the little guy up.

Oof. He’s not so little anymore. He looked like he could have rolled around you if he wanted to avoid being scooped up, but he chose not to. He looks up at you curiously. You pat him on the head to let him know he’s not in trouble and you’ll get back to him.

“I just want to talk.” You say. You try to push that thought hard. Talk. Not fight. Not cause trouble or trick. Just talk.

“He snuck up on me.” A voice says in your head. It’s feminine, calm, but confused. “How? It’s too dark in here. Why don’t I shine? I thought if I tried at night, I could see my own light but I don’t.”

What...what is it talking about?

“The others take in sunlight and become their own suns together. Why can't I? I don't feel scared right now. Aren’t you scared like the other human visitors in the dark?”

That'd make a certain sort of sense...

Full disclosure, the first time I saw a Ralts, I thought it was a Grass\Psychic type like Celebi.
>>
>>1959859
A Raltz could be born among Gulpin, due to egg groups. Maybe she identifies as a Swalot.
>>
>>1959810
Could be that she can sense others auras but not her own.
>>
>>1959878
Considering how balls to the wall insane that hot mess of egg groups can get, I generally don't pay attention to them.
>>
Sunflora, Espeon, and Volcarona are all considered the "sun pokemon" as well.
>>
>>1959928
strangely, solrock is the "meteorite pokemon". Honestly, given it's psychic typing, ability to absorb sunlight, and ability to generate light, I think Solrock is our best bet at Gardevoir's identity.

“Umm, who are the others?” You cautiously approach, setting Dice down. He stays by your side, but doesn’t seem nearly as concerned as the others. You’re not even sure if he snuck up and bit her for any other reason than he was just bored and messing around.

“They’re not here right now. I used to be alone here, without anyone who understood me. But they feel empathy like I do. I’ve been following them a long time, but they glow and I don’t. I want to glow with them. If I don’t shine, what am I?”

“Why would you shine?”

“Because I am a sun. The ones I follow are suns. I’ve tried spinning until I’m dizzy and even more confused.” She takes a step closer. “I’ve been feeling what they feel for so long. I forget what anything else feels like. It’s been them or fear from strangers. Why don’t you fear?

“Most of the time when I get attacked by someone we become friends.” You smile. “Like this one Hydreigon I met in a cave. Hmm, I hope he’s eating enough. Or Jane. I guess I never became friends with that Kabutops, but I’m sure if we sat down together we could find some common ground. My point is, I can tell you’re bad or scary. You’re just a confused pokemon. It’s alright. We all get confused sometimes. You haven't been scaring people on purpose, right?”

She shakes her head.“No. Not at first They get so scared. I can feel it. I get scared too and we scare each other so I. It keeps happening. I can only find comfort by finding the others, but they’ve become upset with me. They say I bring negative emotions and they spread. I don’t want to do that, but I can’t help it. I must belong with them. I can feel a sense of belonging and community when I’m close to them. I don’t feel close to any of them, but that feeling is...I need it.”

You think about teaching her a move like Sunny Day.

>You clearly don’t belong with them, and you’re bringing harm. It’s not your fault but you need to figure something else out

Gobble, you didn't forget about these questions, did you?
>>
Anyone else surprised it's so quiet right now?

I was expecting a more active quest today, considering we were captured and are now negotiating with a Gardevoir and the previous flame wars this pokemon has caused.
>>
>>1960232
Gobble said short thread so a lot of people probably thought it was not worth the effort and went to bed or something, I almost did but then decided not to at the last min.
>>
>>1960237
Eh, this probably isn't going to be resolved in one thread anyway.
>>
>>1960232
We’re used to Herb being in peril by now, and Herb is already taken. We don’t have to worry about Garde stealing him away.
>>
>>1960245
I usually don't read posts after the thread, I had no idea a flamewar even happened; I just like the feel of this scene.
>>
>>1960252

“Maybe you’re just picking up on their emotions.” You suggest.

“Yes. Isn’t that what communities do?”

“I mean, not normally, but you know, in a psychic sense.” You think back to your studying of psychic types. “It sounds like it might not be genuine. I don’t know for sure, but I think you should consider that.”

You sense a lot of confusion coming from her, but a sliver of understanding, too. Maybe she’s emanating it.

“Is it okay to show you something?” You want to try a new approach. She nods and comes closer. You take out your pokedex and start scrolling through it. She’s amazed at this glowing device in the dark,. She gets over it long enough to watch carefully as you flick through images. She reacts to one and you go back to it. “That one?”

She nods at the image of Solrock. You saw these a little bit before when you studied. It all comes together now. She seems to be coming to a realization too as your head tingles again.

“Do you want me to teach you a move that makes you shine?”

“I don’t know.”

“Here. Let’s show you.” You turn to a calmer but for some reason still hostile Belladonna. “Bella, do you want to show our new friend Sunny Day?”

She looks peeved, but she pridefully demonstrates the move. The sunlight shines on Gardevoir, who stands there taking it in. She’s so emotionally moved that she can’t articulate anything for a moment. You wait patiently for her, and even take a sit after a minute. Bella seems a lot less upset and even expresses some joy at her move having worked so well.

The sunlight fades, and Gardevoir turns to you. “It’s temporary.”

“Well, yes.” You scratch your chin. “But it helps, right?”

She thinks. “Yes.”

You spend the next while teaching Gardevoir Sunny Day. It’s surprisingly easy, since you can clearly communicate. You’re curious about how she understands and ‘speaks’ human language, but decide not to pry right now and interrupt the session. As you gain a sense of satisfaction from teaching, she reflects it and looks happy with how things are going. That genuine joy touches you, and she brightens up even more.

Your pokedex rings and makes you jump. You’d forgotten all about that feature! Gardevoir skitters behind a box and your pokemon all scramble from being calm to getting ready for trouble. You try to wave everyone down while answering the call.

“Herb!” Hana’s voice comes through the other line with some staticy video. “Just checking in. Laki and I- “ Laki pops up behind her and waves, “ran into some psychic pokemon. A whole group. I don’t know if it’s one of them or not but Laki’s been telling them all to knock if off one by one.”

You suppress a laugh and tell her about the Gardevoir in broad details. Hana yawns, says she’s just tired but still glad, and asks if that means the job is done.

Well, it is, isn’t it? You were asked to just investigate it and report back. But maybe you could do more. Maybe you already did solve it by giving her a way to show the Solrock she can shine. Or maybe you’re just helping her do something unhealthy.

>>
>>1960612
You know, Gardevoir is a good mirror for Herb, but not in the way I expected towards the beginning of the quest.

At first I had thought it would be a whole “masculinity/ femininity” thing, but Herb’s really already grown a lot there.

Gardevoir reflects Herb more because she has a story of immigration and community.

Gardevoir isn’t a Solrock, and Herb isn’t Loanan. But they do belong there. Just as Herb is Loanan by moving to and living in loanah and belonging with Loanan girls and pokemon and community, Gardevoir is a Solrock in an honorary, familial sense. A family can be a fairy and thirty rocks, just as much as it can be a boy and two girls.

I think that for Gardevoir to sort out these issues she’s going to have to understand that she can be qualitatively different from her community and still belong there. She needs to know that she’s a fairy and not a rock, but that that’s okay.

I do still think I like her as a Hydreigon or Tauros or Murkrow or Sharpedo figure.

Much as just having her tag along would be kind of interesting, there's a problem with that and he's established to be kind of a cunt already.

Namely, Max.
>>
>>1961124
I legit want to see maxamillion again so bad. He crisps Herb’s chicken so hard. It’s wonderful.

I want to challenge him to a pokemon battle. We’d likely lose, but if we won it would be so sweet.
>>
>>1961139
If losing to Max would be a catalyst to train like hell to curbstomp him next time because he's an insufferable prick, I'd be all down for a battle we lose.
>>
>>1961145
Herb is to max as laki is to Jane.
>>
>>1961149
Except Max is just a cunt who's trying it on with our sister while Jane is just really, really highly strung.
>>
>>1960612
I second this notion. I'd feel guilty as fuck just leaving her here.
>>
>>1961164
As much as I would like to say otherwise so that we could have an excuse to use our pan on him, I don’t think it was ever proven that Max was pulling moves on our sister. Just that she was going clubbing.
>>
>>1961707
I think max is after that brown sugar anyways.

Hm. Garde says she doesn’t feel close to any of the solrock, just that she needs to feel like she belongs. Now, there are a lot of ways that problem can be solved, she could find community with a lot of places. The Solrock, or our Powla if anyone in the Harem caught her, or we could take her to a population of Gardevoir. I also still think that having wild pokemon associated with the conservation temple’s cause would be great.

No matter what solution we take, we should check in on the solrock and see if there’s some problem causing negative emotions to echo through their group.
>>
>>1961747
We could also simply have her along as a member of our group as a wild pokemon. Simply because a pokemon isn’t caught doesn’t mean it can’t have good relationships with humans. Even Meowth from Team Rocket is a wild pokemon.

This would work out increasingly well due to the fact this Gardevoir can make psychic connections to communicate with people.
>>
>>1961747
Honestly though, if everyone is stuck on the idea of her being caught, personality-wise, Herb would be the best fit.

This Gardevoir is a nervous one, timid nature most likely. Thus, Ultimate Father Herb would be a fantastic fit for such a timid personality. The next best would probably be Laki, but she would most likely prank the crap out of it rather than try to bring it out of its shell.
>>
>>1961805
Remember Fel? The pokemon league or whatever doesn’t like trainers to keep pokemon around without catching them, because they could get around the six member party limit.
>>
>>1961819
What about Hana? She’s good at coming out of her shell even though she’s timid. Maybe that would rub off on Garde.
>>
>>1961823
True. I was thinking as more of a legitmate member rather than a way around the rules, but the rule against it makes a valid point.
>>
>>1961829
Im more worried about the lewds that may occur from teaming them up. You’re forgetting we already have Hitmonchan wanting to bang Jane.
>>
>>1961838
Im sure it’ll be fine...
>>
>>1961871
The Ralts line over time adapts traits from their trainer's personality and shifts their own to match, IIRC.

Hana having a Gardevoir would be truly frightening.

Hana's such a sweetheart though. So what if she starts hitting on Polu's Spiritomb and they have little babies?

When Herb thought Sorbet was looking to the door for more Pokémon who might come, she was really just thinking about bolting, right?

How did that fight between Garde and our party go? I feel so sorry for Mace, he was afraid Herb would get himself in over his head and he did and Mace tried so hard to protect him. I feel so bad for making him worry like that. All of our pokemon, really. It feels irresponsible to gamble with our safety when our pokes are relying on us.

Is Gobble feeling better about not having evolved yet? I feel like he’d be doing better since the snorlax fight.

Did you forget the question before “does herb exercise” or skip it for spoilers?

Who’s the champion of Loanah?

I want to meditate with our pokemon. Some pokemon, like Lucario and Ribombee have an affinity for aura powers. How much affinity do the species of our Pokémon have for aura?

Did grandpa’s estate get settled? (I’m expecting us to have to visit the mainland for a reading-of-the-will plot)

How common are resident aura healers in hospitals?

I want Herb and his Pokémon to get new outfits. When was the last time Herb got a new outfit? Is he jonesing for one? I wanna get him in that ace trainer look. Or maybe biker.

How many of Herb’s grandparents are still alive? Is the grandpa we’ve been talking about from Mom or dad’s side of the family?

How’s Pohoa doing these days?

OH god youre right. Herb is even a Brock analogue.
>>
You should probably archive this Gobble.

Yeah, Team Mom, loves to cook, loves the ladies, great older brother and all around sensitive guy. I'm Sure Herb and Brock would get along.
>>

>There are vegan marshmallows. I'd like to think for the sake of convenience that that's just the mainstream type in the pokemon universe because that's easier for me.

>>1969345
>When Herb thought Sorbet was looking to the door for more Pokémon who might come, she was really just thinking about bolting, right?
[A little of both. But being away from the group seemed like the even worse option. And it's totally not cowardice if she's going to find help, right?]

[Mace was already feeling pretty bad for the amount of times Herb has gotten hurt under his watch. He wasn't able to get a read on Gardevoir through the mist. He lept into protective action focusing getting the fighting away from you. But being that distracted, he got hit. Dice was completely caught off guard at any sudden hostility. Bella recklessly attacked with everything and with Gobble coming in to help, they put Gardevoir on the back footing. But that scared her and she grabbed you].

>Is Gobble feeling better about not having evolved yet? I feel like he’d be doing better since the snorlax fight.
[He was feeling pretty okay, but feeling a bit helpless about what just happened might give him another thought.]

>Did you forget the question before “does herb exercise” or skip it for spoilers?
>>Has Herb been keeping up his workout routine "offscreen" so to speak?
>[A bit. I haven't been writing it but we can do a vote for how much energy he wants to devote to that. Keeping it mind that he's been healing a lot too so he's going pretty hard on himself]

>Who’s the champion of Loanah?
>[Herb should look into it.]

>I want to meditate with our pokemon. Some pokemon, like Lucario and Ribombee have an affinity for aura powers. How much affinity do the species of our Pokémon have for aura?
[Hoo boy. That's a lot to sort. Herb's pokemon are more fair to rate individually.
- Gobble is good, but he doesn't think beyond the more practical
- Mace is an old hermit, so he's an ideal candidate for it
- Bella could do fantastically with meditation if she could just stop being so emotional. She's a quick learner, but can be a little hot-headed. No idea where she got that.
- Dice has a simple outlook on things and that lets him clear his mind easily
- Sorbet is a bit like Gobble, and more concerned with utilitarian concerns. She does have a romantic side, but not a spiritual side. I mean romance in the more broad sense of the term instead of just lovey dovey stuff.]

Gobble, I wasn’t talking about the question about the question about exercise, I was talking about the one BEFORE it. It was “how legitimate of a battle style is throwing off your opponent with fashion and poetry?” Ya goof.

[Oh! In that case, it's entirely legitimate. A good battler should be well rounded. If someone is so much stronger in those areas that it makes the difference for your battling, then it's a sign you need to work on it.]

>Did grandpa’s estate get settled? (I’m expecting us to have to visit the mainland for a reading-of-the-will plot)
[Oh! That's a good idea.]

>How common are resident aura healers in hospitals?
[Not totally unheard of but still pretty rare. Some may or may not be just useless.]

>I want Herb and his Pokémon to get new outfits. When was the last time Herb got a new outfit? Is he jonesing for one? I wanna get him in that ace trainer look. Or maybe biker.
[He could really go for one.]

>How many of Herb’s grandparents are still alive? Is the grandpa we’ve been talking about from Mom or dad’s side of the family?
[None. That was your mom's dad.]

>How’s Pohoa doing these days?
[He's adjusting. Being a fashionista is a lot less lucrative, but less stressful than his old job. He still gets to get away with some dictator-like behavior, so that's nice. He's been in touch with Valerie about exchanging tips, and it's blossomed into a strange friendship over phone calls.]

Cool! I’m really hoping we get to hone our battle panache soon. I feel like Herb/the playerbase really took to battle poetry.

Only eight questions to go! Thanks for answering these gobble, it’s great.
>>
Anons, would you suck a steamy creamy log out of gobble's perky butt to show thanks for providing this miracle of a comfy quest weekly?
>>

Gross no, wtf.

I’m a deviant, I can’t help it. I guess I’m just a poop not eating freak.

(I am thirsty for those last 8 answers though)

I don't understand, you're a deviant AND love this quest and gobble...but you WOULDN'T eat her steamy creamy logs? How does that work? That makes 0 sense!
