HAMMER TIME, WE BE TORBOURN NOW.

thank you my lord that this may happen. we hope this goes well

The first week of your training is basically none-stop forge work.

Quite literally from dawn to dusk you've got a hammer in your hand and your ass in parked in front of the fire. Any free time you have is spent out cold on the cot.

You can feel yourself getting better, but you don't really have chance to consider just how much progress you're making.

The second week is better, as you've full adjusted to to the lifestyle. You can feel yourself getting a bit stronger as well; the constant work and supply of food helping you gain the muscle mass you would have gotten from those months on the road if you weren't eating very often.

Godo definitely notes your progress, as the moment it gets easier to work he ramps up your workload.

Those bonuses are supposed to make it so that you don't get entirely fucked by luck. But, for John...

>>1933469

You decide to go with Armor Smithing first. You've got a bit of prior experience, and it'll probably pay itself off in spades in the future.

So, you grab your hammer and get to work.

> Congratulations! Your training in the forging of metal into protective layers has given you the skill: Smithing (Armor)! Current skill rank: Novice (+2)!

Godo seems a bit surprised at how quickly you pick the skill up, especially when it comes to working with Medium Armor. He's quick to hide his expression, but you can tell either way.

Towards the end of the week, the dwarf is called out to do something or the other. So, instead, you're given a simple job to do. You don't get paid, but the job is trivial at best and it's going towards continuing to keep you fed so you don't complain.

The good news is that you're done before lunch time, so you've got a fair amount of time free. You have to be back by sunrise tomorrow to start, so there's that to consider.

You have quite a lot you can do in your free time, so you take a moment to think of the possibilities.

>>1933595

You spent a good potion of the day just relaxing and catching up with Sierra. It's good fun, especially hearing about her brother's continued plight in the world of romance. You'll have to meet the guy one of these days...

Eventually, the two of you run out of conversation, so you ask her to give you a few tips on manipulating mana. She's a bit skeptical of your ability to actually consciously manipulate mana, but you pull another smoke trick and she's no longer in doubt.

The two of you spend a long time alone, mostly Sierra giving you advice on proper breathing techniques and exercises to get you used to doing something you've never really been good at. At the end of the day, you can kind of control the strange smoke effect the comes out of your palms, though you're still a bit iffy.

Considering what's coming tomorrow, you bit her goodnight and head back to the Bastion. The cot seems far more inviting than you thought it would; guess all the mana expenditure caught up to you. Regardless, you have a rather nice night of sleep.

> Congratulations! Your skill in the direct manipulation of raw mana has further refined! Your Mana Sculpting Skill is now at rank Novice!

At this point, Godo has dropped the general smithing entirely, having you focus entirely on honing your armor smithing.

And hone you do, as you feel that knowledge and familiarity with working the metal grow day after day.

> Congratulations! Your skill in forging metal in protective layers has further refined! Your Smithing (Armor) Skill is now at Seasoned Rank!

After a day of work, you decide to gamble a bit. Grabbing what's left of the construct's chest piece. A quick explanation of it's source and you've got the dwarfs attention.

There's a decent amount of yelling as he berates you for destroying what was certainly a mechanical marvel, but you can tell that his back isn't really into it as he's practically enraptured in the metal.

Eventually, it gets brought to the forge where you help Godo to test the properties of the metal. This goes on for perhaps a day before he breaks off a chunk and has one of the Bastion clerks run it over to an alchemist. You guess you'll be hearing about this in the coming days...

At the end of the week, Godo announces that you're done learning how to smith armor and now you need to know how to put it together. So, that'll be fun. And again, he tells you to pick some other specialization to go into.

Learning how to actually put armor together into something functional is a dizzying process. One after the other you're treated to lessons on proper handling of leather, covering weak points, moving in armor; it goes on and on. Immediately after, you're thrown headfirst into utilizing those lessons, forging portions of armors and turning them into functioning bits. You take to it rather well, all things considered.

> Congratulations! Your study into the construction and crafting of armor plates into sets of armor has gained you the skill: Build (Armor)! Currently skill rank is Novice!

Possibly due to the fact that you're head is still swimming, you struggle with the finer points of gun smithing. Despite your previous success, several things give you trouble; mostly the rifling process. You'll need more work on that before you make any progress.

In better news, you learned the results of the testing. Godo uses a lot of terms you're not entirely familiar with, but the gist of it is that the metal was forged using a process and alloy thought to be lost. Thanks to this, you'll be able to restore that lost knowledge.

> Congratulations! Your study into ancient and archaic techniques has granted you an additional bonus! While forging metal, you can choose to spend an additional 20% in materials to increase the Grade of the finished product by one level!

Godo has to run off again, so you've got another free day to yourself.

So, you journey outside the Bastion walls. It's a much colder morning than you anticipated, the wind not helping at all. Guess the seasons have begun to change.

Regardless, you make it to the Dragon's Lair Inn without an issue. Poking your head inside, you find Goo Hwi sitting calmly drinking some tea. Gang Ryong isn't around and Sierra is either still asleep or has already gone out.

You push your cup away, and can't help as you look up to where the Inn portion of the building is, "You wouldn't happen to know where Sierra is? I'm surprised that she's not up yet".

For a moment, you swear there's a smirk on Goo Hwi's face. You blink, and it's gone, "Ah, yes. She got back late from work last night, something about a party of sorts. Regardless, I don't believe she'll be awake anytime soon".

"Oh," Well, that's a shame...

The two of you enjoy a bit more conversation before you get to work. Goo Hwi takes you to an isolate area outside the city to train.

You haven't used this since that night in Bo Shan long ago, so it takes quite some time before you get the hang of drawing it out consciously. Moving on from there is being able to use it while not concentrating, and then the old man forces you to manifest it while in the middle of a fight.

That last one was the hardest...

When the training is over, you're rather surprised to find that the day is over. You're exhausted from the workout, so you bid Goo Hwi good night and head back to the Main Bastion.

Progress on armor building is slow; the various techniques needed for each type of armor meaning that you'll need more time to full take in.

On better news, you take to gun smithing far better this time. All the extra time you've spent going over every aspect of the process pays off in spades.

Given how much you've improved lately, you decide that perhaps you should mess around a bit here. You've got a full forge and workshop at your disposal, so why not?

The question is where to begin....

You do a quick think over of what you're capable of:

What can we do when it comes to electronics? I suppose we could try running the translator using its own flash drive as storage, although I'd rather not risk our only copy for that, especially if whatever's left on chips we salvaged is made adaptive and smart enough to be resentful

Where's the line between electronics and magitech anyway?
>>
>>1935743

I'll be honest when I say it's a pretty thin line between electronics and magitech, but you can think of it as electronics being more so mechanically based while magitech is magically based.

As for the flash drive, you could copy those files over to another hard drive. And the construct that you pulled all that tech out of does not have an AI; it's not gonna go full Terminator on you one day.

You can begin to work on building a sword that has a kind of taser wire along it, especially if you want to make something like a rapier, though you'd just be making the sword portion of it; you need to buy the supplies for taser component of it.

Either way, looks like we're building a rapier-style sword.

Considering just how things have been going in the city lately, what with the strange group that seems to have a bone to pick with you, you're probably going to need a reliable non-lethal option.

Your gauntlet taser has served you well, though its reach is severely outclassed by anything. So, perhaps it's time to think a bit outside the box.

The idea you have is a simple, rapier-like sword, a bit wider in the base than an average one, but the general outline is the same.

So, you get to work. Far from the first time you attempted to forge something, ironically enough it's the forging hammer still in your hands, your technique has improved dramatically. Those numerous hours spent just heating and forging metal endlessly has smoothed your movements to the point where it's not such a massive drain to work in front of the fire.

After a few hours of work, you've got the basic construction of the blade done. It's not the best thing in the world, but it's definitely functional that's for certain. Your hammer work resulted in a relatively smooth blade all the way to the point. All in all, it looks like an average rapier minus the guard and grip; however your work didn't end there. There's a thin indent in shaft, running from where the guard would be to the tip. Your plan is to run the taser wire along this and cover the gap in with the same conductive material that is on your taser gauntlet's knuckles.

If you do it right, you should end up with a sword that can deliver a debilitating shock alongside it's piercing attack.

> Congratulations! You have successfully forged: Rapier Base (Good Quality!)

Surprisingly, you don't feel tired at all after making the part and stowing it to the side. Considering the time, you have enough time to work on another project of yours.

The only question is what to making...

No, you've already started this little project might as well finish it up. Grabbing the necessary belongings, you leave the forge.

A few carefully worded questions, considering that you're looking for distinctly non-civilian items, later and you're on your way to a shop in the Water District that the Daimyo apparently do business with.

The place isn't that hard to find, and you don't waste any time entering.

It's... not the worst place you've entered... you think. Calling it a 'shop' is definitely a stretch; the interior is more akin to a warehouse as there's just crate after crate from floor to ceiling.

At the back, there's a single man, casually smoking a cigarette with his feet up on the counter top. He doesn't say a word to you, simply pointing to what's evidently a catalog of his merchandise.

> MANA STORAGE CRYSTAL: Tiny - 2 silver, Small - 5 silver, Medium - 15 silver
> MANA CONDUIT: Tiny - 10 silver, Small - 25 silver, Medium - 50 silver
> MANA CONVERTER: Tiny - 1 silver, Small - 3 silver, Medium - 10 silver
> INSULATOR: 50 copper per square foot
> CONDUCTOR: 30 copper per square foot

Thinking about it, you don't need too much to make the taser since you don't have to worry about making the casing of it. The other good news is that for a weapon of this scale, you'll likely only need the Tiny versions of these pieces; the larger variants wouldn't fit most likely. If you were to bare bones it, you only need a Conduit, Converter, and Conductor. But, that might cause issues down the line...

Regardless, you have 1 gold, 113 silver, and 80 copper on you currently.
> What are you buying?
>>
>>1936335
Do the crystals have shelf life? Might want to pack a spare or two for random tinkering...

Anyway, buy up what we need to ensure the weapon is reliable and doesn't backfire on us.
>>
>>1936335
>buy double what we need.

its just simpler that way. and we can fix up any fuck ups
>>
>>1936352
in fact, take two of every tiny thing and double the amount of insulator and conductor. we have enough. its all good. and possibly a larger storage crystal
>>
actually could we take a look around for storage modules for our pipboy while we're shopping? So we can download the translator.
>>
>>1936335
How big are the mana storage crystals? As for where to put it, we could make the mana crystal a part of the pommel with the other stuff safe inside the hilt.
>>
>>1936512

Tiny would be about the size of a half-dollar. Small would fit within your palm. Medium is about the size of your hand.

>>1936351

Crystals don't have shelf life, but the mana within slowly decays over time.
>>
>>1936524
How do they recharge? Do we just pour our magic power into them? I assume they don't have the fancy harvester our cutting tool has.

The man gives you a bit of a stink eye, probably for how much you're ordering as a walk in, but when you slam a bit more than what's needed onto the counter and tell him to see if he's got a spare Voltmeter lying around he looks a bit more enthusiastic.

After a few minutes of rummaging and muffled curses, he drops a bag of gear in front of you. You immediately pull back your money, ignoring the growl of aggravation coming from in front of you and checking through the sack to make sure everything's in order before pushing it back to him.

He doesn't say anything as you leave, likely checking to make sure your payment was legitimate as well. Regardless, you make your way back to the Main Bastion.

Entering without a problem, you consider how you're going to make this. Well, considering the size of what you're working with, what it is you want to do, and the materials at hand, you might as well put some serious effort into it.

Remembering the time you build your taser gauntlet, you take out all of your material and lay out how exactly you're going to put this all together first.

The power process starts with the conduit, which draws mana from the air and runs it into the wiring. Next up is the optional storage crystal which houses excess mana when the circuit is not in use. Lastly is the converter, which turns that mana into a DC current.

The idea, from there, is to run that electric wiring down the length of the blade and cover it in conductor to give the current something to 'jump' off of.

With the plan laid out, you begin the process. The conduit is secured to the edge of the guard, resting just against your pointer finger while you grip the sword, and the wiring is run, for lack of any other infrastructure, along the grip down to the pommel. Right there at the end, you hook the input and output into the mana crystal. Securing it, the enchanted piece of quartz could easily pass off as an accessory while not in use. Giving it a bit more though to what you're about to do, you grab your Dagger and cut off a piece of Insulator, running the cloth-like material around the entire guard to make sure you don't accidentally electrocute yourself when you hook everything up. Cutting a few holes to allow for all the gear you're working with to be where it needs to be, you secure the converter right at the back of the guard.

Up next to running the wire along the divot in the blade you made earlier, making sure to strip the rubber insulation and instead wrapping the conductor around it. From there you carefully place it and secure it as best you can. Thinking on your feet, you pull out your Multitool and set it to Weld. Being careful to not melt the wiring or conductor, you head one side of the divot to the point where it's malleable and begin to hammer it over enough so that the two sides pinch the conductor into place.

Giving it a test swing once it's cooled to make sure that it won't come free at the first use, you're rather satisfied to see that everything holds together. In fact, it's rather hard to see the thin line of black that now runs up the blade. That's good.

Going back to the grip, you grab more Insulator and wrap the wiring up so that it won't move. Satisfied that it's secure, you pull out one of the rolls of bandages you bought long ago in Bo Shan and create an actual grip for the sword. It looks a bit strange, but when you properly nail the wrapping down, it holds and provides a decent enough grip so you don't particularly care.

Taking a step back, you're actually rather impressed with what you've done. The entire thing looks good and a quick flick of a switch rewards you with a low crackle along the blade without shocking yourself. Due to the smaller size you needed to use, you know that you won't be able to constantly use the effect, but it'll at least do it's job well enough.

Well, you've got that new alloy that you could mess about with. And you've always wanted to try your hand at heavy armor...

Running with that, you get to work on forging a chest piece; it'll be the least complicated of the set, and it'll give you the most leeway when it comes to testing out this new metal.

So, firing up the forge, you get work. The alloy isn't particularly hard to make, you just have to make sure the ratio is right and that you're hammer it in properly. A few minutes of that and you're on to forging out the metal.

You get a bit lost in the constant back and forth, between fire and anvil as the chest piece slowly begins to form in your hand when something startles you.

"JOHN!" Backing away from the forge a bit, you turn to find Godo standing there with his usual scowl on his face. Before you can ask what's going on, he's already walking past you to what you were working on, "The boss wants to talk to you".

Turning to the door, you can in fact see Sun Woo smiling at you, "It's been a while, John".

Your response?

"Uh, hang on..." It's been a while since you've considered something like 'hygiene' and it definitely shows. Ugh, you smell awful... Wiping yourself down as best as you can, you walk over to the Head of the Bastion.

"I... I'm a bit out of what might be considering 'presentable' right now..."

Sun laughs at your awkwardness, "Don't worry about that, I won't judge you for your current state. But that's beside the point; there's something I wish to speak to you about".

He begins to walk down the hallway. You turn for a second, looking at Godo apparently examining your work, before moving to follow the man.

The two of you walk a ways before arriving at his office, taking your usual seat across from him.

"I assume you have a job for me to do?"

"Not quite," Sun Woo looks a bit hard pressed to make up his mind for a moment, "Consider it more so a personal favor".

"Please do".

"How to explain... Ah, yes. My family, well I should say I am, is brokering the purchase of a rather unique set of armor for a good friend of mine. Now, normally, I wouldn't have any issue with validating the features of said armor. However, this particular piece is more of a relic than anything else; I believe you can see where you might come in".

"Yeah, I can," You lean forwards a bit, "But what's the catch? There's always a catch when it comes to these kinds of things".

"Well, to put it simply, the seller is rather... flamboyant," He looks to the side for a moment, "The deal is going to be done during a party in the coming days".

"A party," Deadpan doesn't begin to describe the tone of your voice. You also point to your shirt to emphasis the fact that you're not exactly cut out for higher society at the moment.

"Yes, a party," He nods to your display, "And, yes, you will be given the chance to clean up and change before then. So, what do you say?"

Sierra might enjoy it, and maybe also have some magic tricks up her sleeve.

I'm not sure if taking a mafia gunman would be a good idea.

An interesting option might be asking Gang Ryong
>>

intresting. yes
desirable. no

I really don't want to bring a unknown factor into this, and the "mafia gunman" is a real party man, he will make the most of the time there and cause a political scandal somehow. loads of laughs.

and the obvious appeal of serria is the fact you lot didn't pick the "kiss her" option. so I assume you would all prefer a calmer method of asking her out. eg wine food and a party.
>>

I'm less concerned about Dutch causing some issue directly and more about advertising our connection to the mafia in this sort of setting.

Sun Woo's son has proofs, but they are not in engineering/magitech. He's not having his son doing the inspection because he does not have that skill set; you, however, do. I guess I didn't make it clear at the time, but while Sun noted that you weren't the only person to obtain multiple Proof's in one attempt, citing his son, he didn't state that his son completed the same tests as you did; there are many different Competency Tests you could take I just gave you the ones you had a chance of completing.

"Ah, what the hell, I'll do it. Out of curiosity, will your son be there?"

"Yes he will," Sun smiles, "As much as he dislikes the spotlight, he won't be able to outrun it forever. This'll be a good chance for him to learn how to handle these kinds of situations".

"Can't say I'm exactly partial to these kinds of events either," Thinking about it, it's been, well... since the Fall of Westmire since you went to a formal party. Those were... an irritating memory, "But I can manage during one. Thinking about it, do you mind if I bring a date?"

"A date?" The Head seems far more interested in where this conversation has turned, perhaps not anticipating it, "Well, I suppose there's no real harm in it. One extra person won't be too much of a different. Although, I can't deny that I am interested in who you'd be bringing".

"Right, I'll keep that in mind," You lean back a bit in your seat, grimacing as you get a whiff of yourself, "You have a Tailor you recommend? I don't think these rags will be appropriate".

"No, they won't," Is his blunt response, "However, do not worry about that. Considering this is more of a personal favor to me than an actual job, I will supply clothing suitable for the evening. And... a place for you to clean up," You can see his nose twitch at this, though his face remains schooled, "Although the person I have in mind will be able to tailor the clothing to fit you without an issue, I still need to tell him what he will be working with. Do you have a preference for a certain kind of formal wear?"

If you're really concerned, a fist of heavy rings are a rich man's knuckle dusters.

Or two rings that can be connected to a grip piece that holds a tiny power source worn as a belt buckle or in the heel of a shoe and turns them into a taser. Pretty sure we don't have time to make one though.

Also magic exists. So they might find it no matter how well hidden it is.

No, the best thing is to bring along gifts or prototypes to show off. A gift for the Host is polite. Maybe an improved clockwork pistol or rifle. Unornamented but well made to reflect our own unpolished state, and so that the host can detail it with their own designs much as we also hope to learn and grow under the influence of their city.

Yeah but getting shanked at an event like this is FAR less likely than them trying to frame us. We'll probably travel there with Sun Woo as out patron anyways. Our main goal should be to follow his lead and make him look good, in turn he'll show us off as the new talent he found and is grooming.

That's why he should be the one to present us and anything we make to the Host.

We should probably warn him that we think we might have been targeted by someone so to be careful on the way there.

Also, why are we asking Serena and not Arch-Mage bro?

> Beard-sempai, teach me how it feels to have that luxurious hair on my body.

I don't think you understand. A) That's not possible even IRL, B) they probably all know what armoured formal wear looks like, C) If our pursuers can strike us at a party with the City Heads attending then our best bet is to hide behind a Guard or our Mage date.

Far more important to look out for poison, possible kidnapping, or being assaulted on the way to or after the party. Additionally we might get robbed while we're there so we should lock up or hide anything sensitive.

We can probably get away with bringing our Glove and the Multitool as being useful for identifying the armour.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be paranoid. I'm saying you're worrying about the wrong things.

If we get attacked in a way that armour helps, we're already too fucked for it to actually help.

Also you would have to convince Sun Woo to make the suit to fit it.
>>
>>1945720
I just don't know if ceremonial weapons are allowed at parties or held at the door to prevent drunk nobles from dueling or stabbing the help.

"Western works for me, just do me a favor and keep it simple," You grimace a bit as you remember some of the more ridiculous outfits you've seen in your time. You don't want to look like a complete and utter tool at this party.

He laughs at your obvious lack of enthusiasm, "I'll try to keep that in mind".

There is something else that flickers across your thoughts, "Would you be providing attire for my date as well, or should I look into doing that myself?"

"Hmm... Well, I believe it wouldn't be too much trouble to procure something for her; if you wish to buy her something that is your decision but do let me know what you end up deciding on," Sun Woo gives you another smile.

"That's very generous of you, sir".

"It is; you can pay me back by introducing your date to me at the party".

"I'll make sure to do so, if she can make it," You're not entirely sure what to say next, though the strange activity you've seen around the Earth District lately comes to mind.

Sun Woo would likely want to know if something is happening that may require the Daimyo to intervene, but you're not entirely sure what's going on yet and spooking this group may just drive them further underground.

Odds are Sierra's going to have work during the party. If she's going to join you, she'll need to take time off; you'll need to tell her in advance.

Grabbing a few of your belongings, you slip out of the Bastion and head toward the Inn. It's gotten colder again, the heavy overcast weather dropping the temperature even further.

The change of seasons reflects in the crowds as, even though it's just after lunch time, the people on the streets are hurrying to get out of the elements rather than enjoying them.

In no time at all, you've made it to the Dragon's Lair Inn. Like always, it's quiet and mostly empty.

In fact, the only person around is Sierra who is calmly drinking a cup of coffee. She notices you out of the corner of her eye, and you can see her entire face light up at your presence.

"John, it's been a while," She's got a smile on her face as you sit down next to her.

After the bar's closed, we've got to sweep and clean everything down".

At this point, she gulps down the last of her drink, "At least I have this to keep me going. How about you; how's the apprenticeship going?"

"I've been working from dawn to dusk. It's been good though, been learning a lot".

There's a comfortable silence between the two of you, Sierra tapping her cup, before it's broken.

"I've been through worse," All things considered, that's a rather good summary of your thoughts on the matter. Even if you did just deflect the question, technically.

"Oh?" Sierra raises an eyebrow at you, "So you've been to one before?"

"A few, yeah. They were..." 'A real pain' is how you want to finish that, but you don't feel like going there right now, "They were. Dutch and I did meet at one, so I suppose at least one good thing came from them".

She laughs here, "Somehow, I can't exactly imagine the two of you in polite society".

As if realizing what she just said, the elf goes quiet and looks off with a frown.

"Is there something wrong, Sierra?" You ask, cocking your head to the side a bit.

"Hahah... Well," She glances at you nervously, "Would you consider going to one in the near future?"

"Huh?"

"I... uh. My boss is having a rather large party at his hotel in a few days and I may have said that you'd be coming as my date and sorry!" Sierra looks at you pleadingly, "But can you please come?"

Sierra's expression goes confused at your reaction, but you manage to quickly wave her off, "Do you know what the party is going to be like? Know anyone who is going?"

"Well," She looks thoughtful for a moment, "My boss made the whole thing sound like an auction of sorts; a lot of money being thrown at shiny, but otherwise useless things. The 'main event' is apparently what most of the people are coming to see; one of the Councilmen is buying something special from one of the major traders. I don't really get it though; why's the main event of an auction something that's already been bought?"

"Don't look at me," You grin at her; sounds like you're going to the same place after all, "So, what are you going to be doing during this party in the first place?"

"Considering the event, I'm going there to work the bar," Sierra pouts slightly, "Sure, it's going to be on a rotation with a few other groups and the pay's good, but I'd rather just enjoy the party than worry about having to work".

Chuckling a bit at this, you consider your next words carefully.

"Oh..." She looks down at the table, "That's too bad..."

"Yeah, it is too bad. The job sounds interesting enough however. I'm supposed to go to this party in a few days and help broker the purchase of some kind of magitech armor; make sure that it does what the seller claims it does and all that. Gonna be in a few days to".

Sierra blinks, then slowly turns to you, "...John?"

"Yes?"

"You're an ass, you know that right?" She pushes her cup away before reaching out, grabbing you by the shoulders, and beginning to shake, "Grr, you were already going to the party then??"

"Yep," The cheerful smile on your face gives her pause, at least until she shoves you slightly, "Hey, the Head's going to be supplying my attire for the night and he even offered to supply you with an outfit".

"He's letting me borrow formal wear? How did he know I was going to be there?"

"Well..." You can't help the slightly lopsided grin across your face, "I might have mentioned I'd be bringing you along as my date".

"I..." Her expression shifts from anger, to confusion, to quasi-depression, ending with her folding her arms in front of her and dropping her head on top, "All that worry for nothing..."

"Hey now," Your hand reaches out and pats her on the head, "If you feel so bad about it we could just go on a date again",

"John".

"Yes?"

"Just be quiet for now," You note that you're running your fingers along her hair, getting a relaxed sigh out of the elf.

It's... nice, really. You've really not had the chance to just sit back and relax in this past month and a half or so. Damn, it's really been that long...

The elf in question continues to make vaguely-happy noises as her breathing relaxes and slows. Guess she really needed the break as well...

Checking the time, you can't help but wince a bit. You do need to be getting back; odds are Godo's going to be running you into the ground after he hears that you're getting more 'time off'.

Looking over, it's rather evident that Sierra's out cold now. Ugh, what to do...

She's rather embarrassed at the fact that she fell asleep, though that doesn't stop her from sending you off. The two of you plan to meet up right when you get to the party, so there's that taken care of.

Getting back to the Main Bastion is rather trivial, though as expected Godo isn't exactly happy to see you back 'late'. Given how his usual expressions are, you return the dwarf's greeting and get dug in for the next few days of hard, hard labor.

Good night buddy. Here are my ideas for some stuff to do.

>A sheath for our rapier
>A bracelet for Sierra
>A beard clip for Godo
>>
>>1953373
Okay, so we get three NEW things.

I suggest we make:

one amulet/necklace that can act as a mana battery for Sierra

a concealed hand rig system for whatever item we need, like a bottle, or a derringer gun

a taser or stun gun that is similar to the ones used in real life
>>
>>1953373
In the context of the story, I'd like to make Sierra's gift and some things that'd help us out. For crunchy combat reasons I think we can forego that and instead focus on making things we can use to make the world a better place not just for John, but everyone. This is very unhelpful as a vote, but maybe it'll serve as a quality of life improvement for you, StoryT, to funnel ideas through and narrow down the volume of options available to other anons.
>>
>>1953373
> A sheath for our rapier

> A torc for Sierra - can have mana crystal that simply powers a small light to illuminate a gem - take the light out and it can be used as a taser. Make sure it has a safety.

Exposed wiring surprise!

> A more accurate pistol as a gift for Sun Woo to present on our behalf.

Prototypes are bomb-ass gifts. Establishes our position as an authority while having novelty as being made by the newcomer who aced three tests at once.

>>1953405
Pretty sure we get to bring our "ceremonial" sword.

Also our Glove which is technically a tool we use has a taser no?

But seriously we have to be prepared to not be able to bring in weapons. Dial the paranoia back down to 9 or so.
>>
>>1953405
Also the setting has magic. So magical and mundane inspection for weapons might be something to consider.

Probably better to bring things that have a clearly relevant and non-weapon function that can be used as weapons.

Like how you can make bombs from laptop batteries.

Hell our multi-tool would be terrifying on flesh.
>>
>>1953373
same as these guys but I don't think we can make a sheath.

so if we can:
>a sheath for the rapier
>a necklace for sierra [potentially a mana battery or weapon]

and try to fuck about with the guns, maybe better sights or a method of quick loading.
>>
>>1953373
Supporting a mana-battery jewellery for Sierra.

Also, what do we need to make a set of communication devices? I know you said Rider used some central hub for communications, but if all datalinks are capable of encoding, transmitting, receiving and decoding a comm signal, there should be a way to set them up to work with each other, at very least on a one-to-one basis.
>>
>>1953417

> You have lost: 1 Tiny Mana Storage Crystal (Simple Quality)
> You have lost: 1 Tiny Mana Conduit (Simple Quality)

Well, the first one wasn't anything really special. Making a sheath for your rapier was rather easy, especially with how Godo drilled the techniques into your head. So, placing the sword and sheath to the side, you move onto the other two projects you managed to complete.

> You have built: 1 Great Quality Ornate Holdout Pistol!

Looking over the piece, you have to resist the urge to run your fingers over the smooth, metal frame of the pistol you worked so hard to create. It was certainly a challenge to compress the various mechanisms within to fit into such a slim frame, but you definitely feel good about what you've made. Placing it back into the small metal box you made along with it, you move onto the last item.

> You have build: 1 Great Quality Mana Collection and Storage Necklace!

This... You put a lot more work into this than you're willing to admit. Considering you aren't a jeweler, you did do a rather good job of combining the Tiny Mana Conduit and Tiny Mana Storage Crystal into what looks like a kind of techno-jewel. From there, the 'gemstone' is held in place by a metal casing connected to a small chain. You're not entirely sure how much length is needed on it, so you left a fair bit of slack just in case.

Pushing together your things, you grab what you'll be taking with you and walk out of the forge.

You've got a nice, hot bath waiting for you.

> Gonna run off for lunch here, I'll be back in a bit.
>>
>>1954380

The previous day, a guy showed up and quickly took your measurements for the tailor. You're not entirely sure if he went fast because of his skill or the fact that Godo was glaring a hole into his skull the entire time but either way the process was done and over with before it really got started. You just hope that the rush job didn't result in any mistakes.

Either way, upon exiting the Main Bastion, you run right into Sun Woo who is standing there casually. You're only moderately disturbed by this, but you manage a polite greeting regardless.

"Did you enjoy your week?"

"It was productive," Looking around, you don't see anyone you'd describe as an 'escort'. It's a bit strange, since arguably one of the most important men in the city is walking around on the streets. The man himself looks completely as ease as the two of you navigates the streets of the Fire District up towards the Cloud District, right where you were denied access previously funnily enough.

"So, do you have any clues as to what exactly I'll be looking at when I'm inspecting this armor?" Might as well ask the vital questions while you have the chance.

Sun Woo doesn't slow his pace, though he does turn slightly to look at you, "It's going to be something quite interesting".

"That's all?"

"More or less," He smiles casually at your deadpan look, "I know that it's some kind of relic dug out of a Ruin far East. Apparently the magitech on it is something else; whoever helped dug it up couldn't figure out how it's functions worked".

"So, you're going to be buying a piece of magitech that no one knows what it does?" This situation just keeps sounding more and more absurd by the moment.

This gets a laugh out of the man, chuckling like he's enjoying a private joke, "I suppose that's mostly true, though they did figure a few of the functions out".

There's an awkward silence for a few seconds.

"...They smashed the suit against things until something happened, didn't they?"

"They did"

The audible thump of your hand smacking your face draws a few looks from people passing by, though you note Sun Woo waving them off with his usual air of calm.

"Is everyone attending this party going to act like this?" The thought of being surrounded by dumb- no, rich dumbasses fills you with a certain amount of dread.

"Quite a number of Shirahoro's elite will be there, though I can tell you they're all exceptional individuals in their own rights. Aside from them, there will be entertainment of a few sorts and some fine food. Pretty normal for this kind of gathering," He gives you another bright smile, "So don't worry about things too much; enjoy yourself while you have the chance".

"I'll try," You huff a bit, turning to look ahead, "I'll try; and I'll worry as much as I damn want".

That gets another laugh from him.

"Here, I've got something for you," Sorting through your belongings for a moment, you find the metal box and pull it out, "Didn't exactly know when the right time would be, but I figured entering the party with this would be a rather stupid idea".

Sun Woo, after accepting the object from your hands, looks puzzled for a moment as he runs his fingers against it. With a motion from you, he pushes the lid to the side, the metal casing smoothly sliding out of the way, to reveal it's contents.

"Oh... Well," He seems a bit at loss for words, which is a rather interesting reaction thinking about it, "John, this is incredible... I almost feel bad accepting this..."

"Don't be," You grumble a bit, "It's a gift; it's yours".

"No, I meant that it'll be a shame to see a piece such as this go without use," Sun Woo looks over at you and chuckles a bit, "I've always been more of a Scholar than a Warrior so I really wouldn't know the first thing about firing such a weapon".

"Then learn how to shoot," Shrugging a bit, you glance over at the man, "No better time than the present, right?"

"Well, I suppose you're right," He looks down at the box again before sliding it shut, "It'll be better than it just gathering dust on my desk".

Once again, there's a companionable silence between the two of you. After a bit, Sun Woo glances over at you.

"You know John," He starts slowly, deliberately, "I must confess that there's a certain, how do I say, frightening quality to you".

"...In what way?" This really is a strange experience for you; no one's every told you flat out to your face that you're scary before...

"Well, I suppose your ability to simply absorb and utilize knowledge is what I find so fascinating. You learn in the process of weeks what would take an average man years to accomplish," Sun looks you curiously, "Geniuses are not unheard of, but to see a one of your caliber in your field is certainly a rarity; even more so from a common man. Ah, I'm rambling now... But, I do want to ask you what your secret is? How did you become such a success?"

I did what I could, worked my ass off day and night to keep myself fed and clothed and my neck intact. Simple shit really. I did what I needed to do and I left when I got the chance".

You turn back to Sun Woo and shrug, "I'll be honest, living here I haven't exactly had to deal with much of that, but the fact still stands: I learned because I had to learn, I worked because I had to worked, and I survived because I had to survived".

He smiles at you brightly, "And you're no less fascinating for it".

"Yeah, sure," You're still uncomfortable with his surprisingly legitimate interest in you, scratching the back of your head for a bit.

The two of you finally make it to the entrance of the Cloud District, the guards at it giving you a glance before a stern look from Sun forces them aside.

In a rare display of self-control, you don't shove your shoulder against the nearest guard and continue on your way. The change between the two Districts is abrupt and rather disorienting if you're being honest; the stone brick road turning into a strange, smoothed out surface that you can't immediately identify. The buildings too are of a higher cut, the architecture reminding you a bit of what Goo Hwi used to live in before he... had Sierra burn it down? You really can't remember that moment all that well, but something tells you it's not exactly welcome territory.

You and Sun Woo continue your silent walk towards whatever you destination may be.

Even if he doesn't use it, it's an ornate weapon which would probably work as a ceremonial piece. Besides, it's point + click, doesn't take a marksman to hit something 10 feet away in the case of an assassin or whatever. Scholars gotta defend themselves too.
>>
we should have included a silence rune in the ornate pistol.

Also, voting for generally trying to use more runes. The next might be one that makes things fire-proof for

but one that protects the beard from fire!
>>

Nah, I think that if he uses it its against an assasin or unexpected assailant so a gunshot will summon the guards. But I agree with more runes and a gift for godo.

Also we could potentially get work from bastion for silence tuning
>>
Maybe, with some telepathy magic, we might be able to remotely control a robot?
>>
>>1956475
Mostly I'd be concerned about how quickly he can retrieve aim and fire the rifle between the time he became aware of the assassin, and them getting to him.
>>
A Gift For Godo.

To show appreciation and respect, we craft a homage to our initial encounter.

We create a Masterwork forging hammer, inscribed with durability runes so that it will (basically) never tarnish and always look amazing.
>>
Sorry about the delay, back for the weekend.

>>1963040

It's a holdout pistol, not a rifle. Not sure where you got that from.

>>1961277

Level up Robotics and put research into Computers; you'll be able to remote control drones that way. I don't even want to think of the clusterfuck of magitech it would take for telepathy magic to control a robot.

A few more minutes of walking later, and arrive at what you can only assume is Sun Woo's 'home'. It's really more of a 'complex' than a 'home', but at this point you've grown rather indifferent to these kinds of things.

"This the place?"

"It is," The man smiles at you in his usual way, "You don't seem all that impressed".

"You've got a very impressive home here, sir," Deadpan doesn't begin to describe your tone.

Your comment gets another laugh out of him and, after he's done, the two of you walk inside.

Despite your jaded tone, you can't help yourself from looking around as you walk in.

Oppie is it possible for us to craft such an item?

It'll take some work to get your Forging + Build skills up high enough to make something of Masterwork Quality, but it's not impossible. You can also get reinforcement runes to put on it, but at that high of a quality it really wouldn't make too much of a difference.

84, Let's see what you see.

Looking about, you're really enforcing your early observation of this being more of a compound than a home.

Seriously, you're in a city and yet there's gardens and courtyards in here. Sun Woo's got to be absolutely loaded to have this much land to his name. Well, it's not like you didn't already know that anyways...

Regardless, the entire place is certainly impressive, even to you. You have to bite back a few pointed comments about the stupidity of paper doors and the like, but all in all you make it to what you assume is the guest greeting area without an issue.

"We have a few hours before the party is set to begin," Sun Woo turns and takes a seat, "I suggest you take the chance to clean up; I'll have your clothing ready for you when you're done".

Now what?

Any customs of the city to be aware about before I head off on my own?

I believe it would be better to actively only get superficial knowledge of Robotics and Computers. We should focus more on Artificing, as this should be our main specialty. Learning a bit of other stuff is good so we can better work together with other (maybe hired) people more interesting projects.
Learning about Computers would also be good for aquiring ancient (hopefully magitech) blueprints, maybe that would help with telepathy controlled robots (which I see as a step towards my personal main goal in this quest: BECOMING AN IMMORTAL GOLEM - better than building one and better than power armour).
>>
>>1964790
I think it would be better to partner up with the computer guy from the last job we did with Archmage. John would focus on the body while he makes it's brain. He could also help John build a kick-ass computer.
>>
>>1964816
disadvantage of partnering up is that there's an additional person around who knows we dabble into questionable and possibly outright illegal technologies
>>
>>1964851
They met on a job funded by the mafia, I'm sure he'd be cool with the occasional goofing around with questionable tech
>>
>>1964865
>>1964851
well we are not working for the mafia, we are affiliated with their fronts. also if we work with a guy on our project and don't use illegal or stolen parts we can claim "nothing wrong here guvnor'"

Sorry Anons, things have been a bit hectic on my end these last few days. We're currently on page 10, so I'll throw up a new thread tomorrow when I have the chance to write.

In the meantime, I've been giving some thought to making a Discord server. Now the idea was brought up during the first thread and ultimately shot down. However since we are now at the R&D heavy portion of the quest, I feel like having a place where you guys can discuss and debate ideas could help keep things focused. Building a Golem and building an EXO have pretty much been the two corner stones of this quest, but they are not the only things that people wish to create. Anyways, I'll worry about that tomorrow depending on the response I get.

See you all then.

See you then Story-T.
>>
>>1968274
story teller, the idea was shot down for 2 reasons.

it was early quest, if this failed or you had to drop it. then all that was left would be a server that no-body would use

and two was again, early days so lots of anons would spend their time on the server rather than the thread and this of course means that steam would fail and thread dies.

currently I believe the first problem has been negated. and I would be willing to overlook the second, ergo a server can be made.

but up to you, and have a good time
