"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
It all comes down to this. Or several days of 'this'. Every choice you’ve made, every success and every failure. It’s all led to you and the Company fighting to stave off the marshalled strength of the entire Free Alliance from the walls of some northern town while you wait for your dread employer, The Necromancer to relieve you with his fell host. Maybe you fekked up somewhere along the line, but for the life of you its impossible to figure out exactly where.

You lost men, brothers. Some you didn’t know too well, it’s the harsh reality of your position as an Officer. A battle is one thing, hours of movement and running around followed by minutes of terror and screaming. One way or another, it's all over soon enough most of the time. Humans weren't meant for sieges, days and days on end of the same pants-shitting terror knowing it will happen all over again tomorrow, if they live that long.

You thrive in this hell, you and people like Bad Hand. You feel better now than you did before the siege started. But your lads... they're only human, you wonder how many will survive this. If any of them will. The butcher's bill grows steeper every day and you still don't know your esteemed employer will bother to keep you among the living. This is a tough time for the Company, the most desperate of measures are being taken to last out another day. Last night you killed a insubordinate officer who defied your Captain, and you still don't know if you did the right thing.

”Fek!” The word comes out with a gasp as you hit the floor again, CPL Hirstun of Ligh already back in his relaxed swordsman stance as you pull yourself to your feet again. It’s been several hours since you murdered LT ‘Hawk’ of the 4th Infantry, hanging him on the orders of the Captain. You’ve been training with
He’s fast, but not as fast as you. He’s strong for an old man, but like a child compared to your inhuman might. And still, every time, he uses your strength against you with his honed skill. You have yet to land a clean blow, and more than a few bruises to show for all your attempts.

”That overhand swing is as slow as a Wild Boar.” The old man’s voice doesn’t carry the respect your rank deserves. For now, you’re just another student. ”I’ve lost count of the number of times I had an opening on your blind side. You lost half your eyes, not half your body. If this was real steal I’d have stuck you like a pig a dozen times over.”

If this was real steel I’d have carved through your guard already. Morning roll-call isn’t set for a while, not until the dawn truly breaks, but you’ve already got a few spectators. What is left of Hirstun’s Dozen of course, now only 2 old veterans left out of 12. LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam fiddling with her newfangled musical contraption, ‘Spitfire’ Spicario scolding the Grenn ‘Pelt’ who keeps licking his wounds. Seems like these are the early risers, keen to have a chuckle at seeing the boss on his arse.
Leaping Carnotaur stance has left you on your back every time, and the results of Wingshark were frankly embarrassing. Addled Left-lane mutt keeps the old man at bay for a time, but he always finds a gap soon enough. You hadn’t realised how much you had been relying on brute strength and foul play to make up for your lack of skill at arms until now. Maybe it’s time for something a little different.

You grit your teeth and hiss. ”Again.”

You’re much more cautious during this bout, tucked in carefully to a defensive posture that slightly mimics the one you’ve seen the old man use. He tests it methodically, mercilessly concentrating on your blind side. Eventually he sees the opening, a slight delay as you readjust your footing to cover your bad side. The man doesn’t have a tell, he doesn’t smile or focus on his goal. But you know he’s about to launch that attack that will break your defence, something like instinct.

Just as he prepares his attack, you launch yours. That first wide swing nearly takes his head off, blunted steel or no, but Hirstun was ready for it and changes his stance seamlessley. You’ve tried that before and this wild swing has always left your centre vulnerable. His blade sweeps up underneath to deliver a shocking blow to your nethers…

But the blade never makes it, your right hand clenching the hilt of the weapon in an awkward grip. Every previous attack you had put everything into your two-handed swing but this time you left your hand loose, sweeping back as the old man went in for the finishing blow. The satisfying moment of realisation in CPL Hirstun of Ligh’s eyes is worth every bruise right before your forehead cracks into his nose.

”Oh damn!” Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster whistles as the other spectators wince or laugh at the sound of a broken nose. Trooper Vendis Durvano grumbles as he hands a few silver pieces over to Trooper Schuster.

+1 Secret Softy

"Let's get that seen to, Corporal." You say offering your hand out to the old man. Hirstun of Ligh waves you off as you and his ‘Dozen’ help him to his feet but his words, muffled as they are, are not unkind.

”Ah, don’t worry about it, sir. Godric Golden here has set my nose back more times than I can co-OWOW AGH!” Trooper Godric Golden looks at the two of you apologetically after that second twist. CPL Hirstun blinks up rapidly at the ominous grey clouds overhead, streaks of orange from first light dancing across them. ”Oooohh that will fekking wake you up in the morning, lads.”

The platoon members present laugh out loud, in grim circumstances even the most half-arsed jests are something to brighten the day. Even LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam smirks at the old man as he takes a seat next to her in the stalls.

”So tell me grandpa, you kill a lot of Chevalisse your glory days?”

”Oh I’ve killed just about every kind of bastard out there. Mostly Neumunster, but when the Chevvy’s joined that Skald crusade back in…”

You cease paying notice to their conversation when CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus snaps out a sharp salute in front of you.

”Liuetenant. The Platoon will be assembled in a few minutes.”

”Very good, carry on.”

That leaves you some spare time. After that, and your talk about the Captain’s unpopular new order it will be back to the Walls. Still no sign of the Necromancer, and the Free Alliance’s efforts are bound to be more concentrated after that whole day of nothing.

The first thing you notice as you near the Manor is that the shutters and windows are all closed, the curtains drawn. The officers and bustling men from the night before are gone, hopefully to their posts, so it is an extremely distressed maid that answers the door trembling. You have yet to change into your Blackthorn armour, but with your gruesome wounds and general ‘sinisteriness’ as SGT Bad Hand once described it, the poor girl seems frightened out of her wits..

”M-m-milord! Th-the Dru-.. th-th- Dra…”

”The Dragon?" You try not to sound overly intimidating. It doesn't work.

”The Beati said it was fine. Please don’t kill me.”

Asgorga is… bathing. The pond by the manor is large enough to leave the black dragon half submerged belly-up. He seems to be enjoying himself immensely. Numerous butlers stripped down to the waist and maids in various states of undress clamber over his bulk with brush and soapy buckets in hand, scrubbing him clean. The sensible ones look half-terrified at their current task, but a few of the less sensible ones...

”Oh my, such shiny scales you have Lord Asgorga! Pretty…” A gaggle of younger maids titter to each other as they work. ”Such fine claws, and you are so warm to the touch. A furnace on a cold winter morning!”

”AHHH SUCH SPLEDID FLATTERY. I THINK I’LL KEEP THESE ONES.” The mighty beast of fire and destruction purrs in contentment.

”They’re not pets, Asgorga.” CPL Saint doesn’t even bother to look up from her writing.

”HMPH. FINE, I WON’T EAT THEM WHEN THE LIEUTENANT ISN’T LOOKING THEN.” The dragon grumbles, causing one of the butlers to yelp from the sudden movement and fall into the pond.

”How very kind of you.” The Saint says dryly, pausing to blow air over the paper to help the ink settle.

”What did the Lord Dragon say?” A freckled slip of a girl says, hitching her frock up as she steps around the pond.

”He likes your fawning, and he says he won’t eat you.” Saint folds the letter and tucks it under her breastplate.

”Oh, that’s… nice?” The maids and manservants up their efforts in flattery and scrubbing. ”What lovely… sharp… teeth?/”

”YOU’VE RUINED IT, CORPORAL. NOW THEY JUST SOUND INSINCERE.”

You’ve seen SGT Bad Hand fight stark-naked in the streets of Far Sut Rus. You’ve seen daemons devour the largest city in the world. You’ve seen the Captain bare and covered in Ajiyimad honey. You’ve seen things… things you don’t even believe were real. But this?

>GAINED: Officer Material. “No one else dies today, not on my watch!” [+1 Free Order per turn, issued by Saint], [Once a battle you can forgo all of Saint's bonuses to ignore a randomly selected casualty this round. Does not include herself or worse than death.]
Saint is continuously haunted by those she has failed, and she has the dark influence of Page’s ritual still corrupting her. But she won’t let that get in the way of her job. She doesn’t care about the light or darkness now, all that matters is following her orders keeping her squad alive.

”Corporal Saint, what is…” You gesture vaguely in the direction of the soapy Dragon covered in half-dressed maids and butlers. ”…This?”

”Sir!” CPL Saint snaps to attention.
”Trooper Asgorga was unfit for parade in his previous state. I saw fit to requisition nearby civilians to make him presentable.”

”Presenta-Is that maid manicuring my fekking Dragon with a pair of shears?!” You try not to squeak in disbelief, it’s unbecoming of an officer.

”IT’S QUITE NICE REALLY.” Asgorga inspects his other talon daintily as the girl works, each individual claw the size of a longsword. ”I COULD GET USED TO THE PAMPERING SIDE OF THE SOLDIERING LIFE.”

”…Is every okay, sir?” Saint asks carefully, still at attention.

”Yes, yes it’s just… no.”

It’s not okay. When did this become normal? Where are the good old days where you killed people, non-magical people for money and considered it a job well done? In those days people you killed stayed dead and their certainly wasn’t a reptilian monster thrown into the mix. None of this magik bullshit, none of this fekking craziness.

”Okay.” You massage the bridge of your nose, trying to deal with the current ridiculous situation. ”Okay. The platoon is just about assembled so... finish up and get him out of here.”

”Right you are, sir.” Saint starts directing the cleaners to wash the soap off and dry him off.

”HHHRRMM. WELL, SO LONG AS I CAN COME BACK HERE AND GET THE GORE OFF.” Asgorga seems a little put out by the end of his leisure time. ”LATER LADIES.”

”Later -ladies-?!” You nearly choke in black tongue. Is your dragon flirting with the help? That’s just… uh, Dark Father that’s just gross. Thankfully Saint doesn’t translate it for the maids. As the servants bustle around Asgorga you build up the courage to talk to Saint about how she has been lately.

Corporal Saint speaks first.

”Corporal Marcus and Corporal Hirstun had a word with me, sir. Showed me how I’d been neglecting my men with my own problems. Justice, revenge, right and wrong." Saint shrugs, as if she could shrug off the values she has lived her whole life by that easily. "Every time I’ve fought for those ideals I’ve only gotten more people killed than if I had just stayed out of it . I know my place, what I need to do. Keep my squad alive if I can, get them through the day. That’s all there is to it.”

”You won’t succeed. Not every time.”

”No. No I won’t, will I? People die around you, sir. But that’s the job, isn’t it?” CPL Saint doesn’t look happy, but that long sad stare is gone. At least she’s no longer on the verge of a breakdown. ”It’s what we signed up for. Trooper Kid will be bring your armour along in a moment, sir. You won’t be late.”

”…Kid is dead, Corporal.” You speak carefully, looking up at the gloomy sky.

This is less than ideal. Has CPL Saint just plain snapped? You scratch underneath your neck, the itching two-day growth bothering you. Below dammit when did you get so sloppy with personal grooming? Maybe it was the day Kid died, you haven’t used your razor since. Father help you, perhaps you were more affected by it than you thought. The dull thud of footsteps on the grass interrupts your grim musings. Staggered and unbalance, with the clank of armour easily audible. You know what you’ll see when you look that way, which is why you hesitate until it’s just a few feet away.

The shambling creature that emerges from the mansion carrying your Blackthorn armour doesn’t bear any resemblance to the Kid you once knew. The whites of his eyes, the sunken bloodless colour of his skin… and the horrific wound that killed him. This isn’t Trooper Kid, this isn’t even a ghost of Kid. It’s just another corpse.

”I can see the inside of his ribcage, sir, I know he’s dead.” Saint’s professional tone of voice hasn’t changed, which you find all the more disturbing. She hasn’t drawn the sword at her side, but all of the sudden you notice how casually her wrist lies easy upon the hilt. ”I don’t blame you for it anymore, his death that is. That’s war. But bringing him back as this abomination? That I can never forgive. Never.”

”Saint, I-“ She holds up her hand to silence you, the hand with the missing ring finger.

”Which is why I’m going to kill the Captain.” The hair on the nape of your neck rises, your eyes darting to the blade you left by the mansion doorway. You’ve seen how fast Saint can move when pushed, could you make it before she struck? And, unarmoured as you are, would you be cut down in an instant? ”Not now, in the midst of this battle. Not for some time maybe. But one day, when I’m strong enough, I’m going to split that bitch straight down the middle. From crown to cunt.”

You blink at the profanity, more shocking coming from Saint’s mouth than the threat itself. Neither of you have moved an inch as the ‘thing’ that is supposed to be Kid sets down the armour and stands there stupidly. A mindless zombie, just another face you failed, empty of emotion. Saint’s face is carefully passive but there’s a gleam there, a red diamond in the window of her soul that promises something sinister. A black shape is leaking from her scabbard, grasping and roiling in Saint’s controlled bloodlust.

”Father damn it Saint, I’ve already killed one good man for mutiny don’t make me-… Don’t make me do it again.“

”It’s not mutiny, Prince, I just want the heartless hag dead. At least the Necromancer has the excuse of not being human anymore. And I’m sure you’ve killed more than just one good man. Sir.” Saint says with a raised eyebrow, her voice still level. Not a word or glance in so far betrays the obvious anger giving rise to the dark flame. Suddenly, its putters out. ”But you won’t kill me. And I know you won’t tell the Captain because then she’ll order you to kill me.”

On the other hand, we named a lake after her to win back Kiranova's heart. In any case, we need to be armored and armed if we're going to get into a fight. If it comes down to it, later, I rather put Saint out of her misery than have Prince lose his captain.

Is it just me or has this quest decided to take a Snake Catcher like tone turn. complete with whiplash depressing choices one after another.
>>
>>1925912
depressing it has always been
And we are in a pretty fucked situation
And the players choses have taken us into it
>>
>>1925945
To be fair, the player choice that led us down this path was picking the undead overlord at session 1.
>>
>>1925985
True
But i dont think this would have been the happiest story even if we picked something eils
>>
>>1926238

>>
>>1925945
Its always been dark, but the choices made had always been a progression toward something and there was a flow to the action. for the last couple threads the player choices that keep wining are extremely reactionary and dragging us into a stagnant whiplash and aren't fitting any sort of narrative flow.

If we were following how the character had been played earlyer we would have spoken out against the use of Company corpses since we had been very protective of Our men in the past, instead we submitted and killed a lieutenant in the process. Alright, that's fine I can roll with that, dark times call for dark deeds and company cohesion comes first. Now our subordinate who just a couple days ago was just a trooper strait up says she will kill the captain and we don't drop her on the spot?

Naratively at the securing of the region we were banging white bitch but realy only because we couldn't have the captain. then when we killed her we started going for the captain but by not advising her against using our own as undead we are locking ourselves into either Side with the captain and let the company burn or kill the captain and rise up as the dark avatar with saint at our side. I'm game for either one I just want to see some actual discussion regarding our direction and us work toward it rather then feeling sad about a choice and then immediately picking the antithesis of that choice at the next pertinent event.

Thats bullshit and you all know it. The Fae would have been throwing mind rape curve balls at us from launch, and the warrior would have been non-stop "elf slave wat do?" "Child reap wat do?"

We soundly stood against using our dead in this way back when we lost our first set of subordinates, we could have Easily stuck to our guns. Especially when We were the ones who actually held the power in that meeting not the captain or the Necromancer. Shit the Necros only actual power up until he arrives is his reputation since the vamps are all free agents now and the local cultists are in our pocket.

The players have made a few differnt picks latly but thats kinda becouse of how fucked we are atm.
Though a little bit did come off as power mathing with the saints new sword ( i wanted thr lady of the lake one)

We didnt like the idea of useing our man at all but capten is the boss and we still love her (i think) and orders are orders
Rember all that shit we wore saying it dosnt matter how you do it that only your men come back alive riseing our dead would help with that.

The vamps arnt playing nice becouse of the boss coming more becouse we bitch slaped them into doing what we say(and haveing a dragon)

Though mybe once this is all done we can go play at beening good guys for a bit
Monster hunting or something

To be honest the company may be reaching breaking point, we've been stuck under siege for a damn while with little way of knowing that relief is coming at all and during that time everyone has lost people in the defence of the castle and the captain now expects us to see them raised in undeath in service of the defense once again.

thats a lot to ask even for loyal men like prince.

If the QM gives a choice, it's IC - he's the ultimate judge of Prince's personality.

Besides, simply because we agreed to a rather extreme measure to save the whole Company's ass doesn't mean we have to go PURGES ALL DAY ERRYDAY. There's a thing called 'sense of scale'.
>>
>>1928130
Ya, but its up to the players to make those choices. what is annoying is we are given 2-3 choices and the players pick one.

Simple example

>Build wall
>Place traps
>Do nothing
>Write in

Players choose place traps then roll poorly causing a friend to step in one hurting them-self.
friend is angry at you for placing the traps.

>Dig up traps
>tell friend to suck it up
>write in

Players vote to dig up the traps because they are to dangerous.

As a result the game has made no progression in terms of narrative and mechanically we are on the back foot.

The QM writes the story but the players Are the character. I always give the QM the benefit of the doubt in these situations and my arguments are all directed at the need to player discussion since these weren't contested votes they won handily, hence my reference to snake catcher (specifically the Snake city arc)

That said I just realized I haven't voted for this choice yet.

>”You said you wouldn’t try to kill her today, right? That’s tomorrows problem then. Let’s get through this day first.” Put on your armour. [Experience]

I pick this because I don't want to make the write in:
Have Asgorga step on her and chew her out while we put on our armor[Elite/Clever]

I'm seeing a likely sad end for the captains story arc. She loves us, she told us this and immediately were attacked by a horde of assassins. She told us she would dump the companies morals to run away with us and whoever would jump ship with us to trade in the Heir. She's sunk her costs and we are reinforcing them so when we betray her to save the company or ourselves its going to be that much rougher,
>>
>>1928023
>there is only one way out
Is even that true anymore?

As per the books the Black Company is an outfit for life, though I recall several exceptions such as Raven and a few others I think. But even in those cases they were always considered 'part' of the Black Company.

I was hesitant to play it straight with this quest, how do they deal with desertion for instance, but certainly since CPL White Bitch's betrayal that has been the way it is. Once you write your name in the Annals and say the words you're a Company man (girl/thing) for life.

A few threads ago Kiranova pretty much said straight up told you that Asgorga had to be either your pet or sign up willingly. You can't mind-break them into becoming a Company member. Whether that's one of the few lines she won't cross or it's a matter of setting a bad precedent down the line isn't clear.

You shrug nonchalantly. Maybe this outright threat on the Captain’s life should have elicited a more immediate response from you, but honestly you just have so much shit on your plate right now. The entirety of the Free Alliance outside the walls less-than-politely trying to get in, dark pacts with creatures of Below eager for your soul and figuring out how to keep your men alive through it all is a more immediate concern. Saint’ vendetta, not even directed at you, is something you can comfortably kick to the back of the line for now. You turn your back on her, open to attack, and begin putting on your armour. It’s not like the thing puppeteering Trooper Kid’s carcass could manage to help.

”You said you wouldn’t try to kill her today, right? That’s tomorrows problem then. Let’s get through this day first.”

”You’re right. Tomorrow’s problem.” Saint doesn’t smile, but the tension in the air is gone. She gestures at the motionless corpse of the lad you were supposed to protect. ”I’ll wait with the men. Come along, Kid.”

You shudder, averting your gaze. You know these Looking away you notice that the oak tree on the other side of the pond no longer bears the weight of Lieutenant ‘Hawk’. The rope that ended in a noose around his neck has been cut, the body nowhere to be seen. You turn back to regard CPL Saint as she leaves, Corpse-Kid in tow, she returns a nonchalant shrug of her own. You’re not one of those fool officers who think interrogating her will actually garner you answers from a tight-lipped NCO. If it wasn’t her it was the 4th infantry, they loved LT ‘Hawk’ like a father.

”HOW DO I LOOK?” You hear the yelp of one unfortunate maid not yet disembarked as Asgorga shakes himself off, his spreading wings catching the dawnlight majestically. You notice while fastening your shinguard some scratches. Aside from one stubborn bolt still embedded in his chest scales, Asgorga has suffered no significant harm aside from a few scrapes from the Chevalisse Paladin lances.

”Stupendous! It’s like an archangel of war come to Earth!” The soaked maid gasps from her waist deep position in the pond. The giant fire-breathing denizen somehow manages to look smug without even having lips to purse haughtily, then turns its gaze at you expectantly.

”Like a …. Dragon?” You rasp in Black Tongue, more focused on fiddling with a clasp of the Cloak of Command. You beat the lizard in mental combat fair and square, you shouldn’t feel pressured to compliment him when he asks.

”THIS SHE-MORTAL CAN’T EVEN SPEAK THE TONGUE AND I LIKE IT BETTER THAN YOU.” Asgorga huffs, literally, smoke billowing from his nostrils. ”HMPH. I SUPPOSE WE CAN’T CHOOSE OUR MASTERS. WHAT DEEDS OF DESTRUCTION DO YOU WISH FROM ME TODAY, OH MIGHTY PRINCE?”

You have to admit the hassle of bringing this Dragon to heel has almost been worth it. Even ignoring the hundreds of Free Alliance he has personally burnt to a crisp, his attacks have kept the besieging enemy off balance for days. Hard to plan a concerted assault with a monster waiting in the clouds. That cloaking sorcery by the cultists has been especially handy, but with them almost entirely dedicated to raising the dead you don’t know if you can rely on that today. But today’s assault is going to put the others to shame, you know it. Can you really afford to do anything other than push this ferocious, fire-breathing ace to his limits?

”It’s going to get messy out there today, Asgorga.”

>”Their engineer corps has been decimated, but I need you to finish them off once and for all.” [Asgorga will attempt to destroy the ALL of siege equipment. No decreases to Wall Section security with medium risk]
>>
Okay, I say before we vote let's War Room this a bit.

*Clearing the walls* seems good at first glance- the wall sections have been our biggest bugbear for obvious reasons, and most of the bullshit that's happened to us happens when one of the walls cracks. Obviously denying that as much as possible helps, but that obviously comes with the downside of the Big Guy pretty much being guaranteed to get shot out of the sky at the end of the day and losing our major advantage. The question would be if we think we can waste a majority of their forces so that tomorrow isn't as bad. I'm not confident, but it's a possibility.

*Alpha Strike* is your typical high risk high reward- could be worthwhile, as it has good bonuses, but the DC is probably going to be ludicrous, and the degree of success probably needing 2 minimum. A coin flip in every sense of the word, really, so not a whole lot to say here. Entirely depends on if we feel lucky, personally.

*Keeping in reserve* is the safest bet, but it also doesn't really do a whole lot for us on the offensive- it's a 'pull our asses out of the fryer one last time' call. If we have to call down Big A in this state, I don't have much hope for us tomorrow. We CAN use him for a surprise assault instead in this position, but I honestly feel like that'd be a waste of a major force multiplier. I might be wrong, I'll admit.

*Eliminate the Siege Equipment* is a midroad call, and it could help, absolutely. I don't feel like it has any major drawbacks, save for a possibility of horrid luck and getting shot out the sky, but at the same time I feel like it's almost too safe, and I wonder what they have in mind for us getting up close and personal- as I stated before once they actually start marching on us, things get up shit creek real fast.

So, that's my thoughts, probably some inaccurate- which is why I haven't voted yet. Thoughts?

The quest has been progressing so far, but it's obvious that players prioritize running damage control after a polarizing choice, both Out and In Universe.

I'll be honest with you - most of what you said seems just an excuse to complain your idea of a Prince looking out for his men didn't win, so you think we need Maximum Edge.

Maybe it's not what you meant, but that's how it comes across to my eyes.

>>1928210
Makes sense, but I must say that *Clearing the Walls* doesn't specify how hard Asgorga's rolls will be, so theoretically we could have better odds than we fear.

Keeping him in reserve is just a waste unless we can use him in other ways, but I doubt the QM will be so gracious to spoil fun for us. So I'm going for the choice that is both safest and with tangible benefits:

>>1928197
We should see if Asgorga will join.

Because if not, then I say we send him on the high risk attack. So what if we lose the Dragon, he's as much of a risk as an asset if we aren't in combat.

If he does join up for the bitches, then I say we get him to finish off the artillery.
>>
>>1928197
Also can someone grab the write-up speech from the last thread and condense it? I'm on my phone so it would be a bitch. Otherwise I can do it in like 12 hours after work.
>>
Finishing off the siege equipment isn't a bad idea. It means the only means the Free Alliance has of attacking is by direct assault on the walls. Of course that means we're going to have to hold fast.

Wall clearing would be extremely useful as well and as a player I'm honestly not very concerned if Asgorga dies defending a position. It might hamper us a little bit in the future but given all the risks of having a dragon with us that might not be a bad thing.

Have we already gotten to see what horrible shit the Necromancer's mages have been able to cook up? Knowing that might make strategy for the fight a little bit easier.

Keep an eye out for that hero on the rise, Priority one is survival. Sieges are endurance events.

If we can destroy their siege weapon capabilities beyond repair this time around it will be a great boon. Its most likely going to be a meat grinder today, but we have only done this well because we haven't had to worry about the walls & gates being torn down by bloody siege weapons.

like some have stated if we edestroy their engineer corps beyond repair this turns into a starve out siege which will last longer and give a better chance of relief if we can last that long, the enemy will be less eager to storm the walls without towers or siege weapons to knock out towers or tear down walls.

We're in big trouble if they manage to punch a hole in the walls.

If we're still alive tomorrow, then we can have Asgora defend the walls.
>>
>Annihilate the engineers and siege equipment

”NOT THE MOST GLORIOUS OF PREY, BUT THE WOOD SHALL BURN AND THE CHILDREN OF SKARLING SHALL BURN WITH IT.” The barren limbs of the old oak tremble as the mighty Asgorga takes flight.

”The board is set, the players ready.” Your bodyguard Cairsun the Morning Light, who has certainly not done much to live up to the title, waits for you at the Manor gate.

”Is that your way of saying 7th Platoon is assembled?” The exiled warrior nods solemnly. ”And what kind of bodyguard are you? This is the first I’ve seen of you since the end of battle two days ago.”

”Does the lion look to the leopard for safekeeping?“ The scarf he wears covers his face but leaves the sad eyes exposed. He asks the slightly raised eyebrows, his eyes drowning in the sorrow of his own failed quest. You're both haunted by your mistakes, yours just happen to be a good deal more recent.

”I’m getting real sick of your constantly-depressing and currently vaguely-insulting cryptic shit, Cairsun. I’ve probably got half the Company weighing up the pros and cons of me slipping backwards onto a misplaced dagger right now after this resurrection business.” You glance at Cairsun the Morning Light in the middle of adjusting your buckle, the impassive failed-hero keeps pace by your side, his hand outstretched into the early signs of snowfall. ”Oh what, I suppose you’ve got a problem with it too?”

”What is man if not mere mud turned discontent? That some of them still breathe makes them no less a heap of corpses.” The sad eyes stare at the warrior’s gloved hand, a perfect snowflake melting into water on his leather knuckles. His other glove fingers a bauble on the hilt of his sword. As with CPL Saint’s sword, you can tell it is incredibly powerful. But that power comes from somewhere altogether. Not the Below darkness of CPL Saint’s blade, but not the Light either…

”…Dark Father you’re a downer.” You mutter shaking your head. ”Try not to throw yourself off the battlements before taking a few of the enemy with you.”

”…In the distant Rakasha Raj I once saw a woman, more beautiful to look upon than running water in the desert sands, throw herself from the Tower of Blossoms. It was very high up, her body… The whole city wept, a night long candlelit vigil. Incense from a hundred temples, prayers to a thousand deities from a hundred thousand lips, begging for the ease of her passage into the afterlife.”

It’s the most that you have ever heard the tragic legend ever speak, you only just realised that you’ve slowed your pace as you listened intently. ”…And?”

[1/2]
>>
>>1930613

[2/2]

”They never removed the body.”

”Excuse me?” You pause in the middle of adjusting your helm.

”Her corpse, crushed to a pulp. They never bothered to recover it from the rocks outside the city walls. The people of the city left it for scavengers and carrion.”

”What is that supposed to mean?” Even the sinister effect of the Blackthorn amour and Cloak of Command can’t keep the puzzlement out of your voice.

”It means that what is sacrilege in one world is insignificant in another. In these lands the flesh of dead men is something to be treated with respect, elsewhere disposing of a carcass no more momentous than a matter of preventing disease.” The Breaker of Walls, Hero of Helmston and Slayer of Vin-Sherek returns your gaze with a dismal look of his own as you approach the bustling Kresden Town Square. La shay' muqdisin, kula shay' masmuh bih. ‘There is nothing sacred, all things are permitted.’ One of my travelling companions once told me that.”

(4) Alright we going for a Saint Crispin's Day, feels wrong to chop that thing down.

Shits fucked senpai'

The Annalist is the keeper of our history, and while these words have often been all too true, there's a final part that goes unsaid but not unheard. *Never for free*. We fight for coin and fight to live to spend it. We'll fight for a noble goal if we're paid for it. We'll fight for a dirty one if that's what we were paid for instead. That's what sets us apart as a Company, and lets us demand a high price for our deeds dark or decent. The Company has never broken faith first, although there have been times the Company almost broke. Almost, but we managed to survive each time. We have fought for rulers that could be well described as monstrous. In this very campaign we've fought beside literal monsters. And been damn glad of them, such as during the nights when they walk the walls and we can rest.

But that is nothing new. The Company itself has a long and well earned reputation for being vicious and unpredictable. When necessary, we've even been our own Monsters. Black hearts. Cold Steel. Dark deeds. Sometimes we pretend to forget, but those words hold us to the truth. Every black decision, every cold slaughter, every dark deed done would be done again. Because every one was paid for, in the only coin we can never lose but always spend. The coin we pay with is not what we get from the Employer. The coin we pay in is loyalty.

I'll write up LT Prince's speech, the roll and the reaction to it this coming Saturday. Unfortunately that will be all I can manage. Since you didn't invest any Bag of Tricks to see who will attack where I'll randomly allocate the 7th's starting position, we shall kick off straight into combat next thread. Before we wait for Saturday though I'll grab Asgorga's roll from you lot, no MBFH bonus.

--------------------------------------------------

>DC Medium 60

I'll take 3 rolls of 1d100. Time to Burninate.

0 = Dragonslayer.
1 = Neumunster Engineering. The attack fails, one Wall Section has its security permanently lowered. Another roll will be required to see if Asgorga is at all injured.
2 = I am fire, I am fury! Objective complete, the enemy siege equipment is in ashes. For the foreseeable future they pose no threat to the walls.
3 = BURN. The siege equipment, and most of the woodland that might be used to build further siege equipment, is utterly incinerated. The Elven Sniper perishes in the flames, +10DC against further Elven covering fire attacks.

“I wasn’t serious about the throwing yourself off the battlements thing, you know.” You say, reconsidering the wisdom of riling up an established warrior who is supposed to watch your back.

“I did not think that you were, I have come to understand few things you say should be taken seriously.” The Morning Light speaks dispassionately. “For my part, I no longer swear oaths I cannot keep so I will make no promise that you will live to see the end of the day. But I will try to keep you alive, despite your best efforts.”

“I guess that’s as much as I could hope for.” You mutter as you the men stand to attention at SGT Bad Hand’s drill-sergeant holler. “You’re alright, Cairsun. What was this friend of yours like? You must have seen things that beggar belief.”

“Of the things I have borne witness to that is true, perfect petals of pink and white falling on the bloody Iskander Fields. The final sermon of the Great Sahib Garanthatu, the last Great Guru of Peace from the Southern Rakasha Isles. Sights of great horror and great beauty alike. So many moments wasted on these unworthy eyes of mine. But this fellow traveller we speak of was no friend of mine.”

“No?” You’re having some difficulty following this conversation. For starters you have no idea what a Guru is.

“Far from it. He was a White Hand religious-killer-for-hire that caused much misery during our time together. I shed no tears when the people of Olm carved the Bloody Scripture into him.”

“No, shit.” You mumble, somewhat surprised. You had your own run in with the White Hand in Ajiyimad and, while the Bloody Scripture sounds more than a little unpleasant, you don’t doubt the long-dead assassin would have had it coming.

"You know of them?"

"They tried to murder me, and worse they picked a bloody inconvenient time to do so."

“The lads are ready, brother.” SGT Bad Hand nods as you arrive. He breathes in deep, looking at the foreboding clouds above with a contented smile. “Today is going to be an absolute bloody shitfest. I can’t fekking wait.”

Crazy bastard.

Day Four of the Big One. Men aren’t built for sieges. They’re worse than on the whole battles, much worse. At least with a battle the clash of steel, the shouting and the screams of the dying is over quicker than you’d think most of the tine. It’s different in a siege, spending every day on the wall on squatting on death’s front door. Knowing that tomorrow it will happen all over again, and the day after that.

You personally always found that the waiting before a battle to was the hardest part. That said, you’ve had more than one occasion to question whether you are a little too alike to SGT Bad Hand in that regard. You never plan on dying, but the risk of it never fazed you as much as it probably should.

The living soldiers from other detachments file past on their way to the walls for today’s carnage. The Tassenland conscripts are showing it already, their hands shake on the spears they wield and more than a few throw up at the sight of their deceased comrades walking again. Maybe half of the column that arrived here is still alive. Most of the other half has been killed and raised again, where there was enough left to raise anyway. The only good thing to come of it is that the equipment scavenged off the dead means the remnants are actually almost sufficiently equipped. There’s a few of them that have that have hard look about them now though, they’ve been blooded. Some men have a switch flipped when they kill a man, or see a comrade die next to them knowing they could be next. Most soften, turn to water and jelly, but some harden. In the rough of all those green conscripts you can already spot a few born killers. If any survive you think you might even have a look at how they reckon getting paid to do more of it sounds.

The dead march past as well. Not many from the 4th, despite the casualties they’ve taken at the Western Gate. You imagine they claimed the bodies were all to damaged, and Captain Kiranova wasn’t foolish enough to crack down on them then and there. There’s not a few of them in the colours of Black. Most of them are Infantry or Rangers but your own are there as well, Trooper Kid shambles past and you try not to avert your gaze in front of the Troops. Of the other two Wildborn you lost, only the hulking figure of Twice-in-One-Day rears over the other walking corpses, there wasn’t enough left to raise of Regrets-the-Rain. No sign of Arlen Rivers though, impaled on the spikes during the fight with the Chevalisse. CPL Hirstun and his ‘Dozen’ look away when you turn your heard towards them. Damn that old man for defying your orders, you should have head-butted him harder.

The Ajiyimad mercs under the Turncoat Prince look at the cultists and their fallen comrades with blatant revulsion, you guess if they weren’t outnumbered 10-to-1 they’d cut them down here and now. The Yellow Dogs don’t seem to care as much but plenty are spooked, even the vilest of scum have their superstitions. The Black Company men, both your own 7th Kreigstrom as well as the Rangers and Infantry that files past to their posts, are somewhere in between. Some aren’t bothered, some are visibly sickened and some are just trying their damn hardest not to notice the shuffling corpses of their dead brothers in black. Of the 4th Infantry, every single one stares at you with openly hateful looks. You don’t doubt your own brothers from this lot would see you and the Captain dead if they were given half a chance.

You don’t blame them, LT ‘Hawk’ was a good man and more importantly a good officer. You can only hope that your own lads of the 7th don’t turn on you, not if you can convince them it’s the only way.

They’re not a pretty sight the Kriegstrom, with their battered equipment and mismatching uniforms. Some wear the distinctive dark steel half-plate issued by the Company or foraged off fallen Neumunster foes, others still have the Ajiyimad-style maille, holdovers from your last campaign there. CPL Hirstun and his ‘Dozen’ (now just Crackfoot and Godric Golden the Banner Bearer) wear Brigandine instead of half-plate, preferring the ease of movement it grants, LCPL Lerrek Jurgensenn and the other Skalds seem to have followed suit. A few don’t even have a trace of black on them, resorting to black cloth tied around their arms or head to differentiate them from the foe. LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam is wearing the knight’s helm taken from the Chevalisse, the horn of the unicorn bent at the tip. The Grenn ‘Pelt’ is essentially naked, his human friend ‘Spitfire’ Spicario wears a ridiculously large hat with a feather. The tattered exotic red armour of Mask would have a Neumunster Officer tearing his hair out if he looked past the fact it was being worn by a dead man for a moment.

They may not look pretty but the bonds they’ve formed with one another have been forged in the heat of battle. Every bastard one of them fights as a unit and moves as a unit. If any single fact gets you and your lads through this hopeless siege, it will be that one.

“SEVENTH KREIGSTROM PLATOON.” SGT Bad Hand roars, spittle flying “ATTEN-SHUN!”

The armoured soles of 2 dozen of the hardest killers on the face of the earth stamp to attention in perfect unison. These are the men, women and everything else that mothers tell stories about to their children to make them behave. That men whisper about around the campfire and look into the darkness in fear.

They would follow you into hell without hesitation, and for Double Pay they’d do it with a smile.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Black%20Company%20Quest

That's all for this thread folks, I'll have to open up the next one with the speech and then straight into battle That Blackguard skill will come up soon. MBFH went off but did not affect the speech, so it should come out relatively unadulterated.

Unfortunately, with full-time work and exams coming up I may not be able to run another thread until early November. The good news is that after that I will be able to run Black Company regularly every week up into the quest concludes (hopefully not too abruptly).

Vote on the archive, forgive my laxity in updating the pastebin and to that one anon sweet-talking the quest in the /qtg/ general... Pic related, you sweet-talking devil you. Thanks whoever it is.

(1) Rolling 1d4 to see where the 7th is initially stationed.
1 = North Tower
2 = North-West Wall
3 = Western Gate
4 = South-West Wall

(2) Excluding senior NCOs and anyone else we've spoken to recently, who do you want Prince to say have few final words with before the killing begins? Not business or anything, just talk. It might be your last chance.

(3) Similar to 2, out of the remaining 7th Platoon who, do you really REALLY not want to die?

(4) Next quest preference

Kiranova:speaking to her about something isn't how it will happen, but prince would probably take a moment after all this hell and the hell to come to at least be around her, she probably wants to he around him too, after seeing the ripples of mutiny happen. I remember the scene saying we were the knight holding her up, I remember it well.

>3.
Everyone I cared about died, I guess excluding bad hand I don't care about anyone anymore. Saint is not our saint, if she is she really failed to show it. I guess I liked sheuster and don't want her dead? I was one of the Anons who always complained that we never had any chances presented to explore the side quests, so take of that what you will.
>4.Fantasy Knight-Errant

It's going to hurt a tiny bit seeing you not run black company my dude, you've been a powerhouse with it since fucking /tg/ days, but there's a big bloat of space ship captain stuff. and a lot of that weebshit trash and flavor of the month junk, too, and not enough good old fashioned knights doing knight things.
Will it have karmic choices as well?

Also, about when in the black companies history did this homebrew part fall into a portal? Way before croakers time or after?

Hmmm, I guess Kiranova. There's a lot of unresolved tension there that needs addressing, just like the decision to raise dead troops. I don't think Kiranova anyone else other than prince to open up to, after all.

Also, I'm a shamless waifufag.

Bad Hand or Trooper 'Smiles'. That lucky son of a bitch always entertained me.

Fantasy Knight-Errant. Hopefully with Fantasy Crusades.

Probably Kiranova. The whole flirting business aside, we are comrades since before the company. Having a serious heart-to-heart with her without making an as out of ourselves would be a nice change of pace.

>3

Bro-warrior Band Hand. If not him, then Trooper Schuster. She's like a living breathing lucky charm.

Man...can't choose. Your writing is great, so I'm good with anything.

Bad Hand or Kiranova. The former for being bros, the latter to just have a heart-to-heart over everything that's happened in the last few in-game weeks.

>3
Bad Hand, Mask, Legless Jenny if she counts.

>4
Sci-Fi Spaceship Captain. I'd like to see what you'd do with a different genre.

Hopefully the same universe, or another Age in it.

I know it's not one of your two choices, but I'd love to see your gritty / heavy character building style brought to the modern world.

Potentially set during the US's invasion / occupation of Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq.

The series 'Generation Kill' would be an excellent reference point.

Talk to Joker. Maybe her gallows humor will lift Prince's mood. We should go into battle happy rather than grumpy.

I want Saint to live so that she can have her showdown with Kiranova.

I personally prefer sci-fi as a genre, but I believe you do your best writing when you are describing people doing horrible things to each other with sharp pieces of metal, so I'm voting for fantasy knight-errant.

(2) Kiranova
(3) Bad Hand and Joker
(4) Fantasy Knight. That other anon was right, we need another great medieval setting quest.

Since its end game any death will be a good one. But I kind of want smiles to almost die again and maybe try and come up with how its happening? Maybe there are dice and odds he cant see?!?!? NANI?

I've enjoyed this quest a lot so I'll follow whatever you do next.
