You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

"Another day, another slog through the wilderness." Naru groans.

"Oh no, did grandma not get enough sleep?" Niko teases.

"Shut it, I ain't old at all!" Naru scowls.

"But we're gonna go see another Ruin! It's sooooo exciting!" Nino squeals. "I wonder what sort of artifacts are locked away in it?"

"Well, we actually have to get there first." Morgan grunts and turns to you. "So have you decided on our route yet?"

You pause to think. The map Elias provided you did have a few possible paths. There was a small road and trail that the Mages blazed to make it easier to travel as well as find their way back. Literally following their trail would be the quickest and easiest, but there was always the risk of whatever might have gotten them may also be watching that trail.

There was also a dry riverbed that snaked up to the Ruin. It would definitely provide a lot of cover and concealment, and the lack of obstacles and ground clutter meant you'd still make good time. But being caught in low ground like that was not an ideal situation in an ambush.

Finally, you could just cut straight through the vast forest, unmapped forest directly to the Ruin. No telling what you would find in there, but you did have a reliable guide who knew a thing or two about navigating forests...

You point to the beginning of the small trail the Mage expedition had blazed, branching off from the main road. You would have missed it, if it weren't for Nino pointing out the concealed ward marking the entrance. A little navigational aid only visible to Mages. A devious little trick.

"All right, we'll be taking the trail, then." Morgan nods. "Careful, though. That means we'll only be able to travel single file. That'll make us vulnerable to getting flanked if we run into anything out there."

"We get it, we get it." Niko nods.

"I'll move ahead of the group to scout the path." Morgan continues and looks to you ."You'll have to figure it out with Niko who's going to take up rearguard. We don't want anything sneaking up on Naru or Nino."

"Yeah, sure thing, boss!" Niko nods as she takes her place at the back of the party, casually twirling her daggers in her hands. "I'll keep an eye on our asses!"

"Hopefully not our pockets." Naru mumbles.

"I heard that." Niko grins.

"I know." Naru retorts.

"Q-quit fighting!" Nino wails, Romulus whimpering in sympathy.

Morgan suddenly drops down from the trees, not making a single sound. No rustling leaves or even a snapped twig. She raises a fist, signifying to stop. You halt pace and the others follow suit.

Morgan then starts using hand signals, a bad sign that a hostile entity was near. She points to her eyes, signifying she saw something. Two fingers pointing up at the sides of her head told you all you needed to know.

Elves.

More rapid signals. Looked like a squad of five. Scouts. Light armor and weapons, but extremely mobile. No doubt there was a larger group elsewhere they were reporting to.

Morgan's eyes focus on you, her ears twitching. Obviously waiting for orders.

You ball your gauntlet into a fist. If they were going to pick a fight, you will finish it.

"Got it!" Niko grins as she stands up and casually waltzes out of cover. "Hey guys, what's up?"

Immediately, the four elves whip around, weapons at the ready. Thankfully, Niko took care to approach from an angle where the elves wouldn't be able to see the party. From your hiding spot, you could see that two of the elves were armed with sword and spear, while the other two were holding bows. A fairly diverse loadout.

"What's your business here?" The lead elf, the one holding sword, grunts.

"Just taking a stroll, that's all." Niko shrugs. "No law against that, is there?"

"I'm afraid you'll have to come with us, then." The scout leader replies. "This are is dangerous."

"Mmmmm, I think I'll pass on that." Niko shrugs and pats her sheathed daggers. "I'm more than capable of taking care of myself, ya know!"

The scout leader glances to his squad and nods.

Niko doesn't have to wait to hear the twang of bow strings to know what's going on. She immediately throws a smoke bomb down at her feet to obscure their vision.

Damn elves, Knew you couldn't trust them. You stand up, halberd at the ready. The elves were still momentarily confused by the smoke, giving you an opportunity to close in. You were confident that Morgan and Nino could cover you from a distance.

The two elves you were targeting quickly but clumsily reorient to meet your attack, though you see their eyes widen in horror when they finally catch sight of your armor and recognize what you are.

Unfortunately, the elves were fast. Much faster than you were expecting. The scout leader sidesteps away, and before you can engage him, the second elf thrusts his spear forward, catching you in the shoulder. You feel the wooden spear point bury itself into the joint of your left shoulder, drawing blood. Pain shoots through your body, but even worse, the counterattack stalls your progress, allowing the scout leader to race past you, making dash to the rest of your party.

You still had time to catch him, but that would mean turning your back to the spearman...

You hear a loud CLANG of metal behind you. You crane your head back and catch sight of Niko having dove out of the shadows to attack the scout leader. However, the damn elf had enough reflexes to react, blocking her dagger strike and putting the both of them in something of a standoff.

Meanwhile, Morgan and Nino were busy trying to handle the elven archers, who were dropping arrows very close to them. Naru stood by, keeping a protective barrier up over the both of them in case one of the elves really did find their mark.

On your front, you grab spear with your left hand, preventing the spearman from being able to pull it out and reset his stance. The elf tugs in vain trying to get his weapon free, giving you the perfect opportunity to respond as bring your halberd up with your remaining hand and stab him in the chest. The spearman coughs up blood and the grip on his spear loosens as his body falls limp.

"Eeek!" Nino yelps as an arrow that would have landed between her eyes deflects off Naru's barrier.

Those archers were starting to become a problem, but you couldn't just ignore the scout leader Niko was struggling with, either.

You just try to ignore it and continue your charge at the scout leader, who's managed to kick Niko away, sending her rolling into the brush. He turns just in time to see you and then bolts. You manage to grab the struggling elf by the collar and thrust your head forward, slamming your helmet into his skull. The scout leader falls limp, and a short yelp lets you know that the archer has been taken care of as well.

Barely a minute had passed since first contact with the elven scouts, leaving 3 of them dead and one prisoner. You and Niko had suffered minor injuries requiring Naru to use some of her magic to treat the two of you.

The scout leader is tied and gagged, and as Niko keeps an eye on him, and Naru is looting and policing the bodies of the slain elves, you have a short strategy meeting with Morgan.

"This was completely unexpected." Morgan mutters. "Yeah, I was figuring we'd run into danger here, but elves? This is way bigger than we thought."

She then looks to you, concern in your eyes.

"I think we have to turn back. Just take this prisoner and cart him back to the Monastery. It'll be more than enough proof for Havel to prove the elves are up to something."

But if you turned back, what would become of that missing expedition...?

"The expedition is probably already captured... or worse." Morgan remarks, as if reading your mind. "If we keep pressing forward, it might be for nothing."

You cross your arms sternly. You weren't leaving that expedition to their fate if there was even a tiny chance of saving them.

"All right, all right." Morgan sighs. "Then the next best thing I can think of is sending someone back with the prisoner while the rest of the group keeps pressing on. How about that?"

You nod. That was an acceptable plan.

"Problem is, who exactly can we send?" Morgan frowns. "Nino is right out. She's too young to send alone. And I doubt you're going to be the one leaving the scene."

You nod.

"So that just leaves me, Naru, or Niko to handle it." Morgan frowns. "So who will it be?"

You point to Niko. She would be skilled enough to keep the prisoner in line, and Naru and Morgan were too valuable as the party healer and scout respectively.

"Yeah, I guess I can take care of it." Niko says as she stretches out her arms. "So just babysit this loser back to the Monastery? No prob!"

"Thanks for agreeing." Morgan says.

"Awww, does she really have to go?" Nino pouts.

"Don't worry, I'll be there and back in a flash!" Niko grins. "I promise! A ninja always moves swiftly!"

You give her an approving nod. Niko then picks up the still unconscious elf and disappears from sight, using that confounding ninja dash of hers to move off. You wonder how she does it.

"Okay, continuing on this." Morgan turns back to you. "We know there's going to be a bigger group of elves out there somewhere, so the more we travel, the more chance we have of accidentally running into them. I suggest we find some place to hole up until we get an idea of where they are."

That was a sound plan, but that also sounded time consuming. The more time you spent out here, the more danger the expedition could be in.

You shake your head. You would all continue on to the Ruin. You then press a finger to Morgan's chest. You had enough faith in her skills to keep you all clear of elven patrols.

"W-well, I guess I'll have to do my best then." Morgan mumbles.

"Well, if we're gonna keep going, we gotta do it now. Whoever sent this patrol out is gonna wonder what happened to them." Naru grumbles as she pops open a flask and pours a yellow liquid over the three slain elves. A thick steam begins to rise as the concoction eats away at the bodies. Naru jogs away while Romulus whines.

"You're just going to have to bear with the smell for a while." Morgan wrinkles her nose. "Let's get moving."

Fortunately, you don't encounter any more hostiles, at least for a while. Whether there were more elves in the vicinity, or it was just Morgan's skill at directing the party around them, you weren't too sure. Either way, you were able to progress quite a distance without issue before Morgan issues another halt order.

"Looks like some sort of outpost." Morgan whispers, pointing to the trees.

Indeed, as you squint your eyes, you could see what looked to be a treehouse perched atop one of the taller trees. Some type of watchtower?

"Looks freshly grown." Morgan notes. "That's not a good sign. They're getting more fortified the closer we get to the Ruin. It definitely can't be a coincidence."

You nod. But what you needed were solutions, not problems.

"We could try sneaking past it. Hope the lookouts don't spot us." Morgan suggests. "Or you and me can try to sneak in and take them out. Can't be more than two or three in there."

"Or I can just blast the whole thing!" Nino offers.

"...which would be loud and would use up mana." Morgan points out.

"But it'll be quick!" Nino pouts.

You raise your halberd. You would clear this tower.

"Figured you'd say that." Morgan nods. "Want me to take the lead? I'm pretty sure I can get closer without getting spotted. You can come in to back me up once things get loud."

That had merit, but you didn't like the idea of Morgan putting herself in a vulnerable position. Maybe it was better for you to charge in while Morgan covered from a distance.

You see Morgan dash up to the hatch and slink in like a snake sneaking into a bird's nest. Then there's shouting from within and the clashing of metal. You take that as your cue to move in as well. Climbing up the ladder, you're briefly interrupted by a screaming elf as he plummets to the ground below. You clamber up into the treehouse, where you see Morgan in combat with another elf soldier, knife clashing against short sword.

However, you don't immediately see any other hostiles, but this treehouse a fairly large...

You charge in from behind while Morgan successfully parries her opponent's attack and strikes with her dagger. Her weapon drives right into the elf's neck as your halberd's spear tip pierces his back. The elf doesn't even have the chance to shout or scream before crumpling to the ground.

"Did you get the other one?" Morgan asks, her eyes darting around.

You pause. A third elf?

"SHIT." Morgan curses when she realizes what's happened. "He's going to try and signal the others!"

Morgan dashes up the stairs like a bolt of white lightning and you do your best to follow, moving past a set of living quarters and to the roof of the treehouse. Up top, you could see a large wooden horn, with the third lookout getting ready to blow on it.

But Morgan's arrow was faster than his breath, and the elf drops dead with an arrow straight through his ear.

"Jeez, that was way too close." Morgan sighs as she drops to her knees.

You put a hand on her shoulder. She did a good job today.

"Thanks, but..." Morgan cranes her head upwards. "It's starting to get dark, and the last thing we need is bumbling around in the forest with elves lurking around. We need to find somewhere to hunker down."

You shrug and sit down. Might as well use this treehouse, right?

"That's pretty cheeky of you, using the enemy's lodgings." Morgan chuckles. "All right, I suppose it should be fine for a night."

Morgan then leans over the edge and waves, signalling Nino and Naru the join the two of you up here. Fortunately for Naru and Romulus, Nino knew a simple levitation spell to get them all up without having to climb.

And just like that, preparations were made. The bodies of the slain lookouts were stowed away in an unused storage space. The windows and entrance were barricaded. Nino set down defensive wards while Naru prepared dinner. Morgan headed to the top to remain on lookout.

You walk over to the small kitchen where Naru had set up temporary shop. Already you could hear her grumbling.

"Course these damn elves wouldn't even put up a stove or cooking stone. Damn veggie eaters." Naru grunts as she pulls out several little packages from her bag. "Too risky to start up a cooking fire in here without those, so I guess we're just gonna have to make do with rations."

You step forward, wondering if there was anything you could do to help.

"Just get the jerky out of that bag there and soak it in some water." Naru instructs. "It'll wash some of the preservative off and make it a bit more tender. Nino can't stand the stuff while it's dry."

You nod and follow her instructions, grabbing a handful of the dried jerky and dropping it into a pot of cold water.

"Honestly, I don't get how these damn elves get by without meat." Naru sighs. "Maybe that's why they have such great figures..."

You just shake your head and knock your gauntlet against the wooden walls of the treehouse. Elven "beauty" was just trickery, like the magic used to build this very treehouse. A designed and deliberate falsehood to worm doubt and lust into the hearts of men.

"Yeah... I suppose that makes sense." Naru nods with a bit of a smirk. "Still, a bit of magic like that can't be all bad, right? Maybe I could ask Nino to whip up a spell or something."

You just shake your head as Naru laughs.

"I'm just fuckin' with ya. Now come on, that jerky should be good and tender by now..."

As you pick up the pot of soaked jerky, you look out the window and notice a faint glow in the distance. The sun was already gone, meaning that those lights had to be coming from your little elven problem. And from the looks of it, they've set up shop at the Ruin.

Looks like a confrontation was going to be inevitable...
