You kneel in front of the gnarled form of the three pines, steeped in the darkness of the sacred halls of the Kuzunoha clan. You have been training for this moment since childhood, and now, as a young man, you are ready to take the name.

An elderly yet powerful disembodied voice calls out to you.

"As the sun shines above, it casts shadows on the land below. Such is the law of the heavens; the law of the earth. Likewise, where there is man, so too will there be darkness. We exist to vanquish that darkness. You, who aspires to become the next Summoner, state your name."

Don't worry, this takes place in 1962- about 30 years after the events of Soulless Army and King Abaddon
>>
(Gonna hit the hay, will continue tomorrow. I'll come up with a name if a consensus isn't reached- you'll mainly be called Raidou anyway)

We have 3 votes for Pablo though

Anons, anons, clearly we're the result of some gaijin marrying into the clan bloodlines. Pablo's our nickname. So something weeby and japanesey for first and last name, with a Pablo in the middle.

Yeah i figured we just washed up on shore or immigrated or our grandpa was a foreigner or something.
lots of ways to work it out.

"Pablo Salvador." you say. Your grandfather fled Spain during the Spanish Civil War, fearing the fascist rebel forces would seize power. He ended up in Japan and married a Japanese woman. Then your father was born, and then you. So you have a Spanish name but don't even look Spanish.

"Pablo Salvador, the time has come to prove yourself worthy of the Kuzunoha name."

At the base of the three gnarled pines, you see a cigarette-sized metal tube with a ring at the top. "Take the Kuda before you, and contract your first demon..."

You hear something like lightning crackling behind you and you see a demon that looks like a tiny old man using a leaf for an umbrella.

"Well, hiya, sonny!" says the demon. "Looks like you're gonna have to make a contract with me. So..."

The demon grunts, rolling his shoulders and giving an uncomfortable look. "Ugh, my shoulders are killin' me....wouldja be a dear and massage 'em for me?"

You give the demon a firm shoulder massage. His shoulders pop with the intensity of your rubbing.

"Ahhh....that's much better..." sighs the demon. "Alright, I'm guessing you're gonna want something in return?"

You silently hold out the summoning tube.

"Alright, I guess I'll be your demon. I am Koropokkuru of the Volt Order. Nice to meetcha!"

With that, Koropokkuru turns into a beam of green light that disappears into your summoning tube.

"Excellent show of diplomacy, young Summoner. Now, it is time to prove yourself in battle." says the disembodied voice. On cue, a demon made of revolting slime appears before you.

"Execute the demon, and prove your worthiness."

You brandish your sword- a katana, given to you for this very task.

You take advantage of the Slime's vulnerability, slashing into the demon with vicious strikes.

"Attaboy! You show that puddle of sludge what's what!" cheers Koropokkuru. The Slime explodes into Magnetite particles and no trace of the demon remains. You return Koro to the tube and sheath your katana.

>Koropokkuru reached level 4!
>Koropokkuru learned Combo!

You check the revolver at your hip as you continue walking down the hall.

"You've done well to come this far, young Summoner. Reach the end, and the title of Raidou Kuzunoha shall be given unto you." says the disembodied voice.

You almost reach the end of the hall when out of the shadows appears a demon that looks like an old woman covered in rags, with an absurdly long paper talisman affixed to her forehead. The demoness cackles when she sees you. "My my, such a well dressed man. I look forward to taking your clothes when I'm done killing you..."

You bring Koro back out, and he trembles when he sees the demoness. "D-Datsue-Ba? I-I ain't ready to cross the Yomi, sonny! Take care of that damn hag before she hangs us both from a tree!"

Datsue-Ba cackles as she leers at you. "Die, Summoner!" she shrieks as she casts a Bufu at you.

There's probably nothing you hate more than a cornered demon acting all high-and-mighty.

You give Datsue-Ba a cold, steely glare. "You want to know why they haven't?" you ask, your tone of voice alone carrying a deadly threat. "It's because they underestimate a human's spirit and tenacity."

You holster your gun and unsheathe your sword, holding it in both hands as you charge forth, blade held high over your head.

"I am Pablo Salvador!" you cry with a brutal overhead slash.

"Next in line to take the name of Raidou Kuzunoha!" You say with a horizontal slash.

"And you are the LAST THING standing in the way of that! Stand down, or I will cut you down myself!"

Datsue-Ba coughs, bleeding from her wounds. "I'll sooner die than submit to a summoner."

You smirk. "As you wish," you say with a final slash that cleanly severs the demoness' head.

As Datsue-Ba's body dissipates into Magnetite, you hear the voice again. "You proven yourself worthy, Salvador. Fifteen times now has the first Raidou Kuzunoha been succeeded. From this day forth, you shall be known as Raidou Kuzunoha the XVI!"

You take a moment to bask in the feeling of your destiny being realized.

"You have a great responsibility, one that is unlike the responsibilities your predecessors had to bear...you must not only protect this country, but the whole world. But you shall not be doing it alone."

You hear light, tiny foot prints approaching you....

"At least this Raidou shows some potential...if only we were still doing the old 'protecting Japan from internal threats' business." says a new voice. You turn in the direction of the voice and see...

...a cat?

"Yes, I'm a cat," says the black cat, cutting off your train of questioning. "I was also the first Raidou, but these days I go by Gouto-Douji...or Gouto, for short. I have been the mentor for every Raidou that has came after me."

....You're not sure what to make of this.

You exit the hall, surfacing in front of an abandoned mountain shrine. "This shrine is more important than you'd think, Raidou. For starters, our contact with the Yatagarasu will be meeting us here..."

On cue, a woman entirely dressed in black shrine maiden garb with a face-concealing headdress steps out from the shrine.

"I assume you are the new Raidou." she says curtly. "I am the Herald who brings tidings from Yatagarasu,"

"And you're the one who's altered the duties of the Kuzunoha clan, correct?" interjects Gouto.

"....yes," the Herald says, not sounding pleased with being interrupted. "The world has greatly changed since the previous Raidou took up the mantle- armies and weapons capable of destroy the world several times over, international political tensions are running high and the shadow of nuclear war looms heavy over mankind. This tension is only going to cause demonic activity to grow more severe. There's even talk of the Soviet Union adding demons to their army's ranks...as a result, the Kuzunoha clan's expertise is now needed worldwide. You are to go to the Capitol, where you will be employed at the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office as a field agent."

Gotou seems alarmed at this. "I knew the plan was for the new Raidou to operate beyond the borders of Japan, but at Naicho? As a spy?!"

The Herald seems to ignore Gotou and looks directly at you. "As the sixteenth Raidou Kuzunoha, you will protect mankind from demonic threats, whether they come from the Dark Realm or from human nations."

She reaches into her garb and pulls out a silver ring with the Kuzunoha clan emblem engraved into it- a symbol not unlike the yin-yang, with an eye shedding a single tear on the left half, and a line that looks like a crooked smile on the right half.

"This ring will allow you to move from the 'real' world to the Dark Realm and back again without needing the Ritual of Entry. Simply put a drop of blood onto the clan emblem, and you shall move through the barrier between the worlds."

"Wait," says Gouto. "If he doesn't need the Ritual of Entry, what purpose do you serve?"

The Herald does an impressive job hiding her anger. "I will remain in contact with the 16th, delivering any information we uncover about his missions to him."

"So you're basically just a secretary for Yatagarasu." remarks Gotou.

That seemed to be the Herald's final straw. "Hold your tongue, you accursed animal, or I'll personally skin you with a dull knife." she snaps.

That actually gets Gotou to shut up.

"Now, unless you have any questions, you'll be needing to head to the Capitol so you can begin your training as a field agent of Naicho..."

"Alright, any rules about being a Summoner I should be made aware of before I leave?"

"Only that you use your talents only for the good of mankind, and not for profit or self-serving reasons."

"Understood." you say. "If that's all, I believe I have training to attend."

That night, you depart for the Capitol city of Tokyo, taking a midnight train that carries you to the heart of Japan- and the start of your duty as a Summoner.

The first day at Naicho, you are brought before the agency's Director, a stern, elderly man named Heiji Kaibara.

"I'll be honest, Kuzunoha-san, I was skeptical about this arrangement...I would have never agreed to it if the Yatagarasu hadn't proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that demons weren't just tales told to terrify children into obedience. However, I'm still not convinced on your efficacy as a field agent. Even if you can handle demons, there's no telling if you're able to handle the dangers of espionage...if you are captured by enemy forces, they could torture everything you know about demons and summoning out of you and add another deadly facet to this Cold War the world is dealing with."

"There's no need to worry, Director." you say. "I'm more than willing to learn how to serve as a field agent."

The Director takes a long look at you and sighs. "Let's hope that you'll actually retain what you learn..."

The next few months are spent learning the ins and outs of espionage- studying various languages, practicing how to fight, learning how to navigate social interactions as a spy...in the meantime, you also study up on demons and try to figure out how demonic abilities can help you in the field- you learn about the mind reading capabilities of Pagan Order demons, how Skill order demons can let a Summoner take on the appearance of someone else.

In the meantime, you're put up in a nondescript apartment a few blocks away from the Naicho building. There's a security detail watching the building from across the street at almost all times, but you quickly learn to live with it.

It's a grueling time of training, but the night after your final training session, Gotou approaches you.

"You're almost ready to serve the Yatagarasu." he says, curled up on the couch. "As a token of your progress, I wanted to give you something."

He runs off to some corner of the apartment and comes back with something clenched in his teeth. "I wnt you to ave dis," he says with the object still clenched in his teeth. You reach down to retrieve it.

It's a hat- specifically, a vintage high school cap. "This hat belonged to the Raidou that came before your predecessor...never went anywhere without it, even after he left high school...your predecessor wore it, and now it's yours."
