THIS IS AN EPISODIC QUEST - we're doing things a little differently here, so instead of voting on every action, we post an episode at a time with full illustrations and brief animatic recaps of the previous episode. This late thread is brought to you by technical difficulties. As I was going to be late anyway, I decided to mess around with the recap a bit more and see what I could do with the limited tools I had. Can't be late twice, right? Also, this week marks the start of shorter threads so that players can have more choices, more frequently in the story.

"Sorry, Lexi."

Wyatt shrugs. "You read books. You know how this goes. Some crazy thing happens to some kids, they end up somewhere, and it's because they were supposed to be there. They have to save something or whatever."

"OR, because some monster is kidnapping them, and someone ELSE has to save them!"

Wyatt turns away from the train and begins to make his way down the stairs toward the circus grounds. "Only one way to find out."

"Wyatt--" Lexi starts for the platform, but as if on cue, the door snaps shut in front of her. "GAH," she exclaims, banging on the window. "I hate doors SO MUCH today!"

The whistle announces the departure of the train. When it does, the bushes reveal the source of the rustling as a small figure dressed in black leaps onto the platform, growling as it rolls on the ground. "My EARS! Why does it have to keep DOING THAT??"

Both children stand in silent shock at what they see. The small figure is dressed somewhat similar to a kabuki theater stagehand with a fox mask. It's hands and feet were bare, looking more like paws than anything, and appeared to be standing on dog-like hind legs. The last curious detail were the large fox tails that it had. Two of them.

Wyatt is first to speak up. "...what the heck are you?"

The name's Kurokomon, if you must know. Gonna be honest; it's not gonna matter much once I get through with the two of you.

NAME: Kurokomon

"I KNEW it! Kidnapping story!" Lexi bangs on the window again as the train begins to pull away. "Wyatt, get out of there!"

"Aww, worried about your brother? Well don't fret, kid. He's got plenty of time to run away. Right now..." Kurokomon leaps onto the top of the train car, and peers down through the window at Lexi. "...you're first on the list."

A rock bounces off the back of Kurokomon's head as she lets out another growl. She turns to see Wyatt running for the platform, more projectiles in hand.

"Leave her alone!"

Kurokomon's eyes glow as she reaches out a hand. "Shadow puppet!" A thin line reaches out from her shadow, speeding along the ground until it connects with Wyatt's. With a pulling motion, Kurokomon tugs on an invisible rope, yanking Wyatt's foot out from under him, causing him to fall on the stairs.

"Don't worry, kid," she shouts from the departing train, "I'll be back for you in no time! Hahahah--aaaaaaaaaaagh!" Her laughter is interrupted by the train's whistle. "I HATE THAT THING!"

Wyatt props himself up on the stairs, chin split and bleeding from the fall. Just as he looks up, the train rounds a corner and disappears. "...Lexi." Slowly standing, he makes his way up the stairs and across the platform in the direction of his lost sister. "You were right... If I had just gotten on that stupid train, maybe we could have... I don't know, but SOMETHING. All I wanna do is just... see you again and tell you that-- Tell you... CALL you!"

Wyatt pulls his phone from his pocket, but upon attempting to unlock it, notices that the screen is scrambled. "Not the time, you dumb smartphone!" Resetting the phone produces a curious result. The standard startup is replaced by a splashscreen of a stylized D with what looks like a little pixel dinosaur coming out of it. It only gets weirder when it speaks.

"DIGI OS v4.07
power on self-test OK!
extended memory check OK!
starting application..._"

A small window opens, and in it is nothing more than a simple compass needle in the middle and a blinking cursor at the bottom.

"What the...?" Wyatt swats the side of his phone a couple times to see if he can knock some proper processing out of it. "How the heck am I supposed to call my sister with this??"

"Searching LEXI..._" appears at the bottom of the screen. The cursor blinks a couple times, then a chime sounds. "LEXI targeted!_"

The compass needle turns ever so slightly, and continues to move as if it's tracking a moving object. Wyatt stares at his phone in confusion before looking off in the direction it indicates. "No way." He turns, but the needle turns opposite of him to keep true with it's target. He turns the other way, but the needle refuses to be defeated. "This... may be better than a phone call. Hold on, Lexi, I'm coming!"

Wyatt takes a step toward the path laid out before him, but hesitates as a drop of blood lands on the display of his phone. Suddenly he remembers whatever crazy magic that stupid ninja thing just used on him; without some sort of plan, he may be running head-first into a rough situation. "Heck, maybe I can borrow a trained bear from this place," he jokes to himself.

"Searching CUBMON... *ba-ding* CUBMON targeted!_"

The needle turns sharply, now pointing directly into the circus. "Alright, that's just crazy. But then again... so is everything else around here." He looks up, shifting his sight back and forth between the direction of his sister, and the direction of whoever Cub Man is.

I don't know about tigers, but there's some weird fox-thing and a train with your sister that you may want to catch first. The only real question is, do you go straight for the goal, or possibly lose time on a wild goose chase lead by your new app? Find out next week on Digital Wonderland!

This train seems to be the same as the last one. Outside looks like a passing circus, but I don't really have time to look with this weird monster thing chasing me!
