From your bed you stare out the window of your dormitory, the sun has barely begun to light the sky and is showing the peaceful evergreen woods which surround this area of campus. It was a privelege reserved for scholarship students like yourself, but you rarely utilized the natural wonder which surrounded you during these past six years of study. All this is changing though, and very soon. In a few quick hours, you will be attending graduation, an with that brings a brand new adventure. Though most of the kids from your hometown had long since journeyed out into the wilderness, making their mark and having adventures, you had higher ambitions. You were drawn to the study of those fascinating creatures which roam every end of our world, farther flung than mankind itself. Yes, you were one of the few who would become a pokemon professor.
You lie on your bed, attempting the futile act of willing yourself back to sleep. Recognizing the pointlessness you cannot help but thing of what led you to this point, and everything you had experienced at the prestigous Erbaum Academy since arriving at age 12 for the first time, when the elderly Headmaster Willow first looked you over and asked
>Are you a boy, or are you a girl?

You remember seeing the entrance hall, with its massive columns and classical grandeur. It had intimidated you then, but it now was like home to you.

As you stepped toward her, the old woman eyed you through her thick glasses. Craning over with an audible creak, she came close to your face. Her thin lips were pursed and her face was wrinkled in a manner which gave the impression of a permanent scowl.

You stood up straighter and said, "I'm a boy, ma'am"

"Ah, yes of course. Right this way then," She said with a weak smile as she ushered you left into a line with other little boys and called the next child forward. You stepped behind one tall, fat boy and were quickly brought forward.

You sat with a clerk for a bit, giving some information.

A bit on the shorter side for a boy his age, pale from avoiding the sun in favor of study, pic related I guess? I don't really give much importance to appearance, basically, if it's white then it's alright :^), but seriously now, I'd also be okay with just using one of the player character appearances from one of the games, provided they won't be used as characters. Certainly streamlines the whole appearance thing

Going to leave this open for a while.

After confirming your information, the clerk handed you some papers and a room key before sening you forth. You made your way to an orientation ceremony, where you were given information on the campus and your room. For the first, second, and third year students, there were common dormitories where you would be roomed together with two other boys in your class. The campus was full of ammenities ranging from its multiple libraries, laboratories, and state of the art battle facilities to a world-class cafeteria and recreation areas. You were in the sparse northwestern Danat region and the university was far from the big cities, so there was not much in the way of entertainment

After orientation, and a meal, you were eventually introduced to your roomates. Harold Magen was the fat boy from before, and he stuck out a stubby hand to shake before returning to his state of the art pokedex. He was broadly built with a blunt nose and deep-set blue eyes. His dark hair was curly and unkempt. Oliver was much more interested in you, chatting away about everything from prospective focuses of study to home situations. He was thin, with an auburn bowl cut and a warm, round face. You would spend three years together in a variety of situations and grew to become friends.

Eventually it came time to select a focus for the next three years. Select two minor and one major focus.

Though you had a great deal of interest in many subjects, you eventually focused on the study of pokemon physiology. You had become especially adept at recognizing the variety of pokemon types through observation and their unique anatomical structures. The mystery of elemental production, such as the manifold debates on how a squirtle can produce so much water tossed around many campfires by young trainers, was a process which you understood well. The structures of the organs, the unique compostion of their bodies, and the nature of chemical reactions that took place within pokemon were subjects you had mastered.

And you knew the elements well, even to obscure topics such as why psychics don't effect dark types and are so effective against poison pokemon. You could recognize the way that dual-elemental pokemon synthesized traits of both their types, and the different ways this was expressed anatomically. This syergized well with your physiologic courses and earned the attention of Professor Euca, who tutored you on how to get the most from a specific type of pokemon.

You also had an intricate knowledge of breeding pokemon, specifically how to recognize stronger traits and potentially useful cross-species heretible traits. Professor Pine who ran the stables frequently hired out students, and he was passionate about his work. You had spent a great deal of time learning and working under him, and you had grown close to the barrel chested man mountain of a man who looked more at home among his Rhydon than the other staff. In the past week, he had been acting very secretive.

You thought of your social relationships through your time at Erbaum

You had a lot of fun at school, and you knew every one of the fifty-three students in your graduating class to at least some extent. You were at most of the school socials and even spoke at this year's formal for your class, though that in part due to your outstanding academics. Your date, Mina Valen, was one of the more attractive girls in the class and she was only your latest romance. You, Oliver, and Richie Patterson dedicated your admittedly small window of free time this year toward parties and events, but you still needed time away from the bustle of all that. You never went more than a week without seeing the more introverted Harold for some time on the old Famicom or just some easy conversation, though you were even pulling him out of his shell these days.
All this ran through your head as you stared out toward the forest, dawn fully broken now. It was six, and you could sleep another hour.

There's no sense in sitting in bed, so you get up and get dressed. As you step outside you are greeted by the familiar rush of cold air so common even in the late spring around Danat. You wander around campus for a bit, but there are few people awake at this hour on a Saturday. As you walk toward the center of the grounds where the main buildings and facilities reside, you hook right through some impulse out toward the trees in the distance.

You continue walking for some time, and the terrain begins to turn rocky and uneven. You press on a bit furthur and eventually are forced to stop by a small hole. You are a bit furthur than you had intended, and now a little peckish, so you sit down to gather yourself. Suddenly, you hear a screech.

A wild Larvitar has appeared.

First, establish whether it's seen us.
If not, avoid sudden movement and take the chance to observe it in its natural habitat.
If so, do not do anything that could be misconstrued as aggressive. If we have any pokeblocks or the like, offer some. Befriending it would be best, but we need to be ready to bug out at a moments notice because our legs are preferred unbroken and attatched.
Larvitar are dangerous. Those little rocky shits can and will fuck you up.

The Larvitar is standing its ground, eying you cautiously. Its head is low and its eyes dart left and right, looking for an aveneu for retreat. You look around quickly, but avoid any sudden moves. Aware of the dangerous strength of even a young larvitar such as this one, who by your analysis is barely a yearling, you very slowly shift your body to match its stance and show your hands.

Its eyes narrow, but it relaxes its posture slightly. You walk to your left, where you have noticed a small dirt pile with compacted balls of soil. You slowly crouch down and pick one up. The creature is curious and steps toward you slightly, but keeps its distance. You rise up and, with a wide gait, take one large step toward the larvitar. You reach out wide and it jumps back, but doesn't retreat. Then you crush the apparent rock in your hand and it falls to the ground as soil, then you step back.

It suprisingly comes right over, seemingly amused by your gesture, and eats a bit of the dirt.

You continue with the careful approach, grabbing a larger mound of compacted dirt and creeping over toward the larvitar. It looks you up and down, but allows you to approach. You stop a bit short and place the mound down, then you sit down facing the little green creature. It begins to approach, still remaining cautious. The pokemon sits down opposite you and begins to chip away at the mound.

After a little while, the tension seems to have largely decreased and you slowly reach out hand, making sure the larvitar sees it. It freezes for a moment, and you almost pull back your hand. Instead, you continue to approach despite your better judgment. To your surprise, it leans into your hand. It appears to relax as you rest your hand on its head.

"Quite a dangerous thing you just did," a creaky voice breaks out, "Both of you."

Both you and the larvitar snap to attention, its head scraping roughly against your hand in the sudden shift. You look up to see, in full mountain climbing apparel, the thin form of Headmaster Willow descending from the mountain. Her gaze pierces into you.

"Yes, and it could well have eaten a hand. Or that is what I would say, had I not watched your cautious approach. Again, this applies to both of you. Perhaps you have a similar nature," She smiles, "And helping an orphaned pokemon who can barely fend for himself is something any Erbaum student should do."

"An orphan." You look at the larvitar, who looks down and steps toward your leg.

The three of you walk toward the campus, with the heamistress pointing out the hour. You have a big day ahead of you, after all. If its anything like how it started, it will certainly be interesting.

You are sitting in the office of Headmistress in a plush red leather chair, opposite the seat of woman herself and with her imposing oak desk in-between. On your right-hand side sits the larvitar from before, his eyes darting all around the office at the various trinkets and photos displayed. Willow enters the room, placing down a tray of biscuits alongside another which holds coffee. She pours a cup, then sips it without adding anything.

"So what will become of him?" You ask, fixing yourself a cup.

"I'm still unsure," she states, handing the larvitar a little biscuit.

You look down at him as he gnaws at his treat, unsure of what to do with it. His face lights up when he bites into it. You can't help but to smile and notice the headmistress doing the same, she seems to have smiled more in this one morning than you had ever seen before. The three of you sit in silence for a time. You down your coffee quickly after the first sip and can't help but have another, the brew is truly impeccable. Finally, Willow breaks the silence.

"Well, no matter for now," she says as she stands, "We both have duties to attend to soon."

With that, she ushers you out of the office with a promise to speak tomorrow morning. She will be taking care of the larvitar for the time being, and despite your interest in the little guy you must admit you won't have much time for him today. As you step out of the main building, campus has come to life.

Graduation is in three hours, so you still have time for one or two quick things.

Your first thought was to see Professor Pine, since you live so near the stables. When you arrive there, there is a note on the door to the professor's small shack of an office. It says that he has gone out hatching and will not return until graduation. Nonplussed by this fairly standard discovery, you move on.

You decide it best to go and visit Professor Euca, a young but well respected professor of elemental physiology and one of your mentors during your time at Erbaum. You find him in his office furiously writing at his desk. The room itself is somewhat small, but this is only further exemplified by the sheer amount of models, diagrams, and even preserved organs scattered haphazardly around it. The professor himself is very handsome, but one would be hard-pressed to uncover this fact due to his unkempt hair and clothing. No one could argue his passion or his skill. Passion especially, he had yet to even realize you had entered the room.

You cleared your throat, "Professor?"

"Yes, yes," he said without looking up, "Put it down anywhere."

"Professor," you said louder, "It's me."

With that, he noticed you and stood up. His focus had shifted entirely onto you, along with his enthsiasm. He quickly ushered you in and began moving boxes around, uncovering a chair. He began to go on about his current theory about the relation between organ structures of ghost pokemon and bug-types. He was just about to pull out a nincada shell which somehow didn't convert to a shedinja, when he had a realization.

"It's graduation today," He said and stopped dead.

"Yes, and that's why I'm here professor," you begin, "I wanted to thank you for all your attention and help these past few years, but what's this about bugs and ghosts?"

The sorrow lifts from his face and he goes for the shell, "You see these small pore-like structures here."

You inside the shell and see what he's talking about, "Those are similar to the tissue on the inside of vespiquen."

"Precisely," He pulls out a diagram which shows a shedinja anatomy, "I postulate these structures are responsible for producing the 'ghost' which animates this pokemon. A unique exosystem of tiny insects and special vapor!"

"But then wouln't it just be a bug-type," you ask, knowing this would falsify his theory.

"Were it not for the vapor, which resembles the 'shadow' matter of ghosts quite strongly" he states, standing up and pacing around, "Unfortunately it is absolutely impossible to harvest, even the tamest shedinja becomes homicidal if its interior is approached."

You continue your discussion for several more minutes, discussing the mysteries of ghost-type matter and its odd and often unscientific behaviors. As you talk, he begins digging in a pile, moving papers to and fro with determination. You simply sit and watch for a time, but its getting later and you need to leave soon. When you are about to say something, he finally stops and hands you a wrapped parcel .

"This is for you," he says, "A graduation gift for one of my most interesting students. Don't open it until tonight."

You thank him for the gift and exchange phone numbers, then depart after wishing him luck on his future endeavors. He shakes your hand an almost immediately returns to his research. With that, you exit the building and head toward the women's dormitories. As you make your way in, you pass a few acquaintances as they go about their graduation preparations. You make your way to Mina's room and knock at the door.

She opens still in her pajamas, dark sweatpants and a blue tank top. She was truly beautiful, with full lips and somewhat soft features that were punctuated by dark, sleepy eyes. Her long, black hair was slightly curled and messy. She was plump, but this gave her the impression of exaggerated femininity and she was among the most 'well-equipped' women on campus. This, along with her palour, was inevitable given how sedentary she was as a true book worm.

"What happened, did you forget there wasn't a test for graduation and pull an all-nighter?" you ask facetiously.

Her eyes brighten and she laughs, "Don't tell me you forgot about the exit exam."

You feign shock and jokingly pull on your hair, "Oh no, I guess I'll just have to stay another year."

She sits on the bed and gestures for you to join her, which you do after closing the door. She embraces you and the pair of you sit locked in each other's arms for a moment. She yawned, and you figured she had her usual trouble sleeping last night.

"So, any plans for after graduation?" you ask.

"Well, I'll see who I get partnered with and what they want to do," she says, looking into the air,
"But I'm going to stick around for a few days on campus before starting the journey. As long as I can visit some ruins along the way, and we don't camp out all the time, I'll be happy"

She looked a little bothered, you could imagine the prospect of a three year mandatory traveling period was especially daunting for an introvert such as her. It was exciting for you, you had so many ideas as to what you would be doing and where you would travel. Even if your aims were still a bit cloudy, you had been told by Professors Pine and Euca that this was often the best way to approach this period. After all, you would have so many years of self-direction as a full professor, its best to be able to improvise.

"Still want to be a poke-historian?" you ask, knowing the answer, "I still think you're too talented an ecologist for that."

"Yes," she says firmly, "It's simply where my passion is."

The two of you hold each other for a little while, aware that you may not be seeing each other for some time. You both express your deep concern and hopes for the journey ahead, and she that she wishes you had more than just a short time together. You falls into your chest, then kisses you. The kissing grows more passionate and your hands work their way down her curves. Eventually you both give in to the moment, and she closes the curtains.

Later on, as you lay in bed alongside her, you become aware of the time. Regretfully pulling yourself away from her, you dress and she shoots you a sad look. She begins to do the same, and the two of you begin to exchange goodbyes. You each promise to stay in touch as you exchange one final kiss and depart.

You find your way back to your room only to find Oliver and Harold standing at the door in full graduation dress, Oliver is smirking at you but Harold seems annoyed. You check your phone and see a series of missed calls and text messages, remembering you were supposed to meet them at this time.

"Hurry up," Harold says gruffly, "We've only got thirty minutes to get to the ceremony."

"Oh, relax Harold," Oliver says with a laugh, placing a hand on your shoulder, "Our man here couldn't miss what might be one meeting with his lady"

You hurry and get yourself prepared. The three of you end up arriving at the ceremony with a few minutes to spare.

The grand hall is barely decorated, with only a banner above the stage stating the graduating class distinguishing its purpose for the day, but the mood is lively and joyous. You and the other graduates file into your seats, with you seated between your two friends in the second row of seats. In a few minutes, the headmistress comes to the oaken podium at the center of the stage and the room quiets.

"Today, we are here to usher in a new generation of junior professors unto the world," she begins, "They will take a journey similar to that which many of them will spend their lives sending young trainers on. But this journey is different. Each graduate will have three years to test their theories and return with something novel."

"Not all who are seated here will return in three years time," The room is still, and she continues, "Many will settle into ordinary lives, others may become entranced by the world and be lost. But those who do will be those who have whethered the storm of the world and are fit to be called a pokemon professor. I sincerely trust this class will do Erbaum University proud"

The crowd is still, hanging on every word. Your classmates have varying looks, and many seem absolutely terrified. The headmistress continues on with some reassurances, and then a long list of formalities before yielding the state to some professor in the medicine department. He lists off the names of his graduates before yielding to Professor Pine who seems to have just arrived. The ceremony follows this theme for a while, and eventually the ceremony reaches its close. Silas Rynn, the class valedictorian and your fellow scholarship student, takes the stage. He is a bit shy, but his buzzed hair and harsh face don't often betray that. He gives a simple speech on the future, and the importance of working together, then closes the ceremony.

You now have time to mingle and you make your way to the dining hall for the festivities.

You look around for Professor Pine, and he isn't hard to find. The man towers over most of the people present here, and his red flannel shirt is less than the relatively formal dress on everyone else. You seperate from your friends and walk over to the professor, who is scratching his great beard sheepishly while a female graduate chews him out.

"I should hardly be surprised," She says with finality, "I'm honestly worried what you're going to do when I leave."

You recognize it to be Emelia Avery, one of the top students in the breeding department who you also know to be the professor's niece. She's only a few years younger than him, and she's more serious minded than her uncle by far, and almost comically small when compared to him. The short blonde girl looks over at you as you approach.

"Alexander, will you tell him he needs to take these things more seriously?" She asks you, pleadingly.

"Emelia, following up on responsibilities is very important," You start, and she smirks a little,
"But the first responsibility of any professor is to his work. Sometimes the best breakthroughs are when one is following their passion. You have to roll with it and everything else vanishes"

The professor is beaming and nodding at your statement, but Emelia's eyes are bulging out slightly. You brace yourself for the worst. Unlike her typically equanimous uncle, Emelia was prone to extreme rage at times. She put her hands on her hips, and both you and Pine take a step back. She opens her mouth, and you swear the big man cowers slightly.

"Oh, Alexander," She says, smiling, "You're right of course, but we simply cannot encourage that sort of thing with someone like my dear, sweet uncle."

She turns to face him, "You are too prone to this sort of thing, just try to work on it now that you don't have me to keep you in line."

With that, she leaves the two of you. You both are a bit perplexed, but Pine shakes it off and grabs you in a big hug. The large man offers his congratulations and his joy is practically palpable as he lifts you off of the ground.

"Boy, do I have a surprise for you," he whispers, "I was working on it for a while, just come see me after you get your partner tomorrow. No questions though, and its got to stay a secret."

You spent some more time talking with the professor, then excuse yourself to mingle some more. You encounter the busy headmistress, who offers a simple congratulations and asks you to meet her in her office tomorrow afternoon. Waving you off as she turns to a very well-dressed older gentleman. You go to meet with Oliver and Harold. You pass by Emelia, who seems to be in good spirits and is speaking with her lanky friend Renata.

Harold is eating from the appetizer table, seeming somewhat bored but still quite happy. Oliver is standing next to him, chatting away with Richie Patterson and his girlfriend Theresa who is a year below you. You overhear them talking about how much they hope they get paired together, and how they like their odds.

"I figure we've got a good shot of getting someone cool," says Ritchie, who seems a little tipsy already, "Me and you, or one of us with Harry here."

"Or this guy," Oliver says, smiling and waving you over, "How's it going there, Alex. Me and Ritchie discussing graduation. We figure whoever we get matched with, we ought to try to travel together at least some of the time. What do you think?"

"I like the idea of us working together, like Silas said in his speech," you say, "But whatever happens, happens. I'm not going to limit myself."

Harold steps in, "I'm with Alex, we'll be stronger if we can be independent from each other."

Oliver seems to understand, nodding his head. Dinner is called and you are all seated while a variety of dishes are served throughout a four-course meal. You enjoy a bit of wine and a roast duck with leek as your main serving, and the company of friends for what may be the last time in a while.

Oliver jokes with Harold, who really seems to relax and enjoy himself for once. Ritchie and Theresa spend the evening close together. You spend some time with your other peers, and visit with Mina for a time, as well as others in the physiology department.

Finally, the celebration draws to a close and people are beginning to be called for the assignment, registration, and selection processes. A number of graduates, presumably those who won't have this done until tomorrow, begin to file out, including Ritchie and Mina. You, Oliver, and Harold all sit together, nervously waiting for your names to be called.

Oliver goes first, then Harold, and finally you are called forth.

Well it's Steel/Ghost, and it has 3 stages.
>>
>>1906315

You walk through a chamber into a room, one of the administrators directs you to the Semford Pokemon Laboratory which is attached to the building. You walk to it and enter the frosted glass door. Inside stands Professor Adelbert Figg, an elderly professor in the medicine department whom you've taken some classes of, and none other than your good friend Oliver who is grinning ear to ear.

"Whatever happens," He says with a chuckle, "And you wouldn't believe who the third member is going to be."

"Who?" You ask, and he just winks at you.

The door opens and in walks Mina, who brightens up when she sees the both of you. She hugs you, almost knocking you over, and you're a bit overwhelmed by the suddeness of it. Professor Figg chuckles, and then calls you up toward him.

"Mr. Hickory, you are to select your pokemon first," he instructs, patting you on the back, "Now if you'll please follow me."

He escorts you into a small room with a circular machine in the center. It looks something like an oversized centrifuge, and you know it to be a machine for restoring pokemon to health. This one houses three pokeballs and has a hexagonical, gray symbol you know to represent the steel type. You are happy, even if it was your second choice.
The professor instructs you on the display, showing you three pokemon. You choose

As difficult a choice as this may be, you find yourself drawn to the beldum. Releasing it from its ball, you inspect it as it stares deep into you with its single eye. It appears to be an absolutely spectatcular specimen. By your admittedly strong potential reading ability, you estimate it to have outstanding potential to the point it could hardly be surpasses. It's claws were sharp and it seemed to glow with health, as much as an organic machine could you suppose.

You feel it reach into your mind, probing in the manner of a strong hand on your forehead offering a firm handshake. What an adamant little guy, standing so resolutely in front of you. The presence you feel almost like a little soldier.

You greet the beldum, "Hello, my name is Alexander. We're going to be travelling together."

It looks up at you and you feel a bit more probing which you acknowledge and permit intuitively. He seems to be assesing you what kind of person you are. After a moment or so of this, you feel strong affirmation.

The two of you walk back into the main chamber to see Ritchie and Mina returning with pokemon of their own. It seems they got a separate selection from yours. A Gastly floats alongside Mina, and you can tell she is overjoyed for getting her first choice pokemon. Oliver walks in with a tiny blue creature in the crook of his arm, which you recognize as a female Nidoran. Not his first choice, but he seems content nonetheless.

You congratulate your friends on their partners, and they do the same for you. You assess Oliver's Nidoran, it's got a bashful nature and stays very close to him until he reassures her. Mina's Gastly stares at your Beldum, who stares back a little harder. This seems to spook the ghost, who runs behind Mina. He's awfully timid, not what you expected of that kind of pokemon at all. You each asses the potential of each other's pokemon, Oliver notes that your Beldum seems to have some type of hidden power behind it. You gather that his Nidoran is exceptionally charming, possibly owing to a fairy parentage.

Mina's Gastly has some strong and thick gas to it, more so than average, and you imagine it could cast out bursts of smog with ease. Each of you seems to have exceptionally well-bred pokemon as well, with outstanding potential. Eventually, the topic turns to battle. You decide to challenge

Until we can tutor (or Mary Sue GM Fiat Alternate Universe Special powers) moves onto it, the Beldum only knows Take Down.

Unless we can figure out some bullshit way to get a Steel move onto Beldum -during the battle-, it loses outright to Gastly.

"Oliver, it's gotta be you and me," you say.

"I wouldn't have it any other way," he says with a grin.

The three of you walk out of the laboratory, which is adjacent to the pokemon battle grounds. The two of you take your positions, and Mina sits on an adjacent bench. Oliver looks confident, but his Nidoran less so as she steps out onto the field at his direction. Beldum hovers from your side and plants his single foot on the ground with a thud. He stares at the Nidoran, who looks back at a smiling Oliver and steels itself.

You know this should be easy, you have advantage after all. Nevertheless, Oliver did major in battling.

"Count us down, Mina," he calls out, and she starts counting down from five.

The battlefield is a simple one, without any terrain. It is about twenty feet by thirty, and has clearly marked boundaries. Mina declares the match to start, and you shout out

"Brace yourself for impact," Oliver shouts, expecting the take down, "And try to charm it!"

"Show it your power, Beldum," you command, and feel Beldum flash for an instant, "Use..."

Before you can finish, Beldum comes toward Nidoran, and she flashes him huge terrified eyes and a sad look. Mina, Gastly, and even you yourself feel effected by her charm. Not Beldum though, it goes right through him, and he seems to charge for a moment. Suddenly, a ball of crackling electricity rockets out toward the unprepared Nidoran.

"Take down!" you shout.

"Double-kick!" Oliver cries.

But Beldum is all too ready, and flies toward the little blue rodent foot first. He crashes into her but it's oddly gentle, you notice, how he simply holds her to the ground afterward. She struggles in vain for a moment, looking at Oliver, who raises his hands in the air.

"All right, that's enough," He says, still smiling, "I give up."

Beldum releases the Nidoran, who scurries to her master's side. The blue cyclopian pokemon floats over toward you.

"You did great out there buddy, and what a show," you say, and he seems to float a little higher before you feel a little mental pat on the back.

Oliver steps to your side and looks at Beldum, "Thanks for going easy there," he says and Beldum nods.

Mina walks over to join you, and pets the little Nidoran with a look of concern that quickly dissipates. Her Gastly seems a bit uneasy, but stays by her side.

She blushes slightly and nods before walking over to the opposite side of the arena. Oliver assesses Nidoran, spraying a potion on her wounds before picking her up and taking a seat. You take your position, and Beldum moves to his.

Just as Oliver starts the match, you cry out "Hidden Power."

Mina, almost as quickly as you, calls out "Hypnosis!"

Her Gastly is extremely fast, and executes the move in an instant as it flies toward Beldum. He seems to be too fast, as a misstep in timing causes the move to fail, and leaves him wide open.

Beldum charges a black ball surrounded by crackling electricity right into Gastly. It's a critical hit, delivered at point-blank range. Gastly is almost down for the count by your estimation, and is twitching slightly from the attack.

Gastly is weak now, but still resolute. You look across the battlefield at your girlfriend, and you unsurprisingly find the same look of determination. She calls for a Lick and her Gastly flies off toward Beldum with its fangs drawn and massive tongue extended, looking terrifying for the first time since you met him.

"Hidden Power," you command, calmly

The lick connects, causing Beldum to convulse briefly. He's still going strong, but only fires off a small bolt of electricity at the Gastly. It's just enough to knock it down in the state its in, however and the match is over. You can't help but feel that you got very lucky against the ghost pokemon, as even the one lick seems to have shaken up Beldum a bit.

Mina rushes off to Gastly and recalls him to his pokeball, "Thanks for not going easy on me."

You take note of the profound effects the ghost type move inflicted on Beldum. Many thought psychic type weaknesses were a psychological matter, but the truth was far more interesting. The coating on the tongue of a ghastly had particles similar to that of its miasma, which were similar in turn to that of most ghost types. It also had a venom mingled within, but it was the ghostly particle's odd necrolysing effect on neurons which was so powerful against the psychic types.

This was no more evident in a pokemon than one that is also part steel, the effects on Beldum were entirely based on the ghost matter. You knew it was mild and would wear off, but the strange matter that damaged neurons so effectively had long since fascinated you. You mused on this to your friends, with both Mina an Oliver wrapped up in your pondering. Oliver himself minored in elemental sciences, but Mina was likely more drawn by your own enthusiasm

You decide to visit Professor Pine, and explaining to your friends he asked you to go alone. Oliver suggested the three of you meet up that evening for dinner and to plan your next move, then the three of you went your separate ways.

[continued]
>>
>>1906867
As you approached the stables, you see a flock of Doduo an Dodrio chasing a Tauros around the perimeter. The rushing stampede surrounds the pokemon, one particularly large and angry Dodrio begins charging a tri-beam. Suddenly, a huge Arcanine tackles it to the ground with a flare blitz and the whole flock dissipates with the Taurus no worse for the experience.

You see Pine chuckling, "Atta boy, Kirby"

The Arcanine approaches you and nudges you with his nose, with Beldum jumping between you. You chuckle and return the bump with a scratch on the head, the Kirby lays down next to you. Professor Pine sits down and smiles.

"I'm sure he's going to miss you as much as anyone," Pine says sadly, "But we'll come visit you unlike a lot of these other bookworms. Anyway, I'm sure you want to know about the surprise. It's your Beldum, he's part of a crop I bred up special when I heard what type you got assigned."

"I thought it was strange that he had Hidden Power,"

"Well, that isn't all," the professor explained, "He's got nearly perfect genes and potential for adaptability in moves and abilities. It took a lot of work, a few ditto, and more than a couple of those bootleg Porygon-Z, but it's a helluva breakthrough."

>What do?
>>
>>1906898
>Nearly perfect genes and potential for adaptability in movies? Tell me more Doctor Pine because that is some interesting work you somehow pulled off. Also give Beldum some..scratches? or pets and be proud of the bugger

Wew lad, Pine's a madman. best teach.
>>

That's pretty cool but honedge is still better
>>
>>1906900
>>1906903

This really excites him, and he begins explaining to you the nature of genderless pokemon. Most common trainers think they cannot be bred, but Pine and yourself both understand this is a limitation for most people based on constraints of ecological condition and expertise on the part of the breeder. Pine has no such limitations, he is one of the foremost experts with access to the finest facilities.

Though most don't know this, a highly charged environment permits "mating" of certain electro-sensitive pokemon. They attach for a while and then the negatively charged pokemon buds like any other genderless pokemon.

"Now understanding that," he elaborates, "You add in the bootleg Porygons. They're adaptable and tuned to start with, but a little more tweaking from me and you eventually can end up with traits like this little guy."

He pats Beldum on the head.

You give him a hug, "Is there anything I can do to thank you for this professor?"

"It was a pleasure to do, and I'm happy to help one of my best students," he replies, reciprocating the hug, "I did something like this for Emmy too, but don't mention it until after tomorrow. As for something you can do for me?"

He scratches his beard for a moment, "Just be on the look out for pokemon with unique traits. Anything like that, give me a call. I'd love to even just check it out."

You exchange numbers and thank him again before departing.

You won't be limited to any number of moves, nor specifically to game moves. You can do a lot by applying your knowledge creatively when it comes to your pokemon, but it will require effort to use and at least some precedence.

Beldum evolve by joining together with another beldum, right? Finding another beldum might be the tricky part.

I wonder what happens if a shellder bites a slowpoke's tail. Who keeps the slowbro? The trainer of the slowpoke or the trainer of the shellder?

Also, thanks for running dunkle, this looks great.

You are sitting at a table off in the corner of the cafeteria, flipping though your guidebook to the various regions on the continent. Mina is looking through her pokedex, she seems to be trying to figure out something about her Gastly from the way she keeps switching her focus between the two of them. Oliver waddles his way over to the table, overencumbered by three nice looking meal trays.

As the meal comes to an end, and conversation begins to pick up, the subject turns to your respective goals and ambitions on the journey ahead. Oliver says he has no major goals that are region specific, he just wants badges and he can get those just about anywhere. It's no surprise to you, your old friend has always been the type to go with the flow.

"I'm all for travelling as far and wide as we can," he says excitedly, "As long as we can go to a few regional championships and bigger tournaments when they come up. That'll be central to my research."

On the other hand, Mina has a number of specific sites around the continent that she wants to visit, and also several historians who she hopes to meet in person. These are spread around the world, and fairly thinly at that, but there are many important sites concentrated in the Zatuy region to the southwest.

Eventually, the topic turns toward you. You have yet to come up with a plan for your research, and there are so many different avenues available to you. You know there is no need to commit to anything just yet, but you ought to formulate some goals for the immediate future. Some things which come to mind are

[Pick any.]

Your foremost ambition rings clearly in your mind, and you tell your friends, "Pokemon physiology is well understood when it comes to simple pokemon like pidgeys or rattata. But even to us, there are many strange pokemon that we understand in a limited way. How does a Beldum work, or a Muk, or even something like Doduo with its two heads splitting into three? That's what I want to know."

Your friends both nod assuringly, telling you how they would be glad to see what your research amounts to. Oliver suggests direct observation is key to understanding this, and suggests you plan on acquiring pokemon to study by raising and testing them. Mina suggests visiting with experts in various related fields which may be helpful, noting that pokemon surgeons would have valuable first hand knowledge.

The three of you excitedly plan until it starts to get late. Oliver tells you he hopes to leave the school this week, and Mina surprisingly agrees. Funny, you thought she wanted to stick around for a while. You table the discussion as the hour grows late and head off to bed.

You wake up early in the morning, it's Sunday and you have few things to do today.

You decide not to waste any time and head off to visit Headmistress Willow to see about that Larvitar from yesterday morning. He had been on your mind, and you wandered what Willow was going to do with him. As you showered and dressed, you came across the gift from Professor Euca. You tore the brown paper wrapping off and revealed a box. The writing on it told you the contents were some type of radar, but when you opened it there was only a chip with a some sort of reader attached.

You read the handwritten instructions on it to discover it was an attachment for the pokedex designed to analyse elemental substances produced by pokemon, he called it the E-Reader. There's a lot you don't understand about the engineering, but the professor clearly states it may be possible to use this to not only understand compounds but to transfer the information into a pokemon through a PC. You install it on one of the four free slots in your pokedex, then head out the door.

You decide against visiting the headmistress' office and instead head out to where you had met her the previous morning on a hunch. As you walk toward the area, you see Willow accompanied by the Larvitar. He seems to be a bit down, but perks up when he sees you approach and runs toward you.

"I'm afraid we were unable to find his mother," she says sobely, "It's likely she's been gone for some time based on what I could gather."

"I would be glad to raise him, professor," you say, "I think it would be in his best interest, especially since Larvitar need so much room and personal attention to grow well."

"Not to mention a veritable mountain of dirt," she says with a sharp laugh, "Very well, I do think you make a good pair so I will accept this arrangement provided you do something for me."

You simply nod, and she continues, "This would be mutually beneficial of course, more of an opportunity than a chore, but potentially very dangerous. I will come to you with this at a later date, once you have had sufficient opportunity to get yourself firmly planted in the world."

"Headmistress, I gladly accept," you say, beeming.

Larvitar seems happy, and hugs your leg. You pat his on the head and enjoy the moment for a second before crouching down to take a good look at him. You already know he has a careful nature from yesterday, but you also note outstanding potential in his physical and special defenses owing to a particularly thick and irregularly jointed carapace. He has above average offensive potential and constitution, but his body is not built for speed at all.

You study him furthur, and note some interesting details. It appears he has a bit of draconic parentage, evidenced by some odd whisker-like protrusions on his cheeks that seem similar to that of the axew line. He has a bit of experience from being on his own, and is likely stronger than your Beldum. You know he can use bite, screech, and probably sandstorm.

The headmistress takes her leave of you, leaving you to your own devices.

You bend at the knee into a proper squatand encourage the Larvitar to come close to you in a hug, which he gladly accepts. You place your hands evenly and then, with perfect form, you lift him up. You hadn't hit the gym in a bit longer than you were comfortable with, but Larvitar are only about 160 pounds, and what kind of scrub can't lift their own weight.

You shake off the unpleasant thought and turn your attention back to the little green creature, placing him on your shoulders. He makes little happy sounds and you smile. You place him back on the ground before releasing Beldum. Larvitar immediately shifts into a different mode, eying the new creature with some suspicion. Beldum stares down the Larvitar and they seem to be frozen for a few minutes, each assesing the other.

Just when you're about to go and put a stop to it, they walk toward each other and Larvitar bumps Beldum on his back. The blue cyclops hovers up and performs the same gesture. You breathe a sigh of relief as the tension deflates, then march them off toward the market section. There are a number of shops in this section of campus for all manner of things. Medicine, vitamins, technical machines, breeding tools, and all manner of other items are present here and most are discounted for students and professors.

You shop around, purchasing a few essentials for your journey and stocking up on medicine and pokeballs. The man who sold you the camping supplies threw in a large canteen with the shop's logo on the side, he told you it could purify water and was well insulated. You drop off your new purchases in your room and make your way out toward one of the battle arenas.

Its sparsely populated, most people are probably going for lunch around now, so you take a medium sized open arena. It has a rough mountainous terrain layout, the natural habitat of both of your pokemon, that sports a small cliff on its left side. You explain to your two pokeman that they will battle each other, and they both seem enthused at the prospect. Beldum takes his place and Larvitar finds his easily.

The green creature is a bit quicker and jumps back, streaming sand from its back. It isn't coming fast enough though, and Beldum comes crashing into it with a loud clang. Larvitar isn't effected too badly by the blow, though, and is still raring to go.

You call for another Take Down, and Beldum is way ahead of you. He launches himself forward, surprising Larvitar a bit and dealing a bit more damage than last time. Larvitar moves with the hit, and has been steadily injecting sand into the air. He disappears into the clouds of thick dust. Beldum looks around, attempting to get his barings, when suddenly the green monster pounces on him.

You catch a flash of darkness as you watch Larvitar bite down just below Beldum's eye, and he follows it up with another quick bite before disappearing back into the sands. Beldum has been damaged, though you doubt he's even halfway done yet.

"Let it come to you," you shout, "You know what to do."

Beldum closes his eye and you feel his energy sort of expand and contract, reminding you of breathing. Larvitar repeats his tactic, slipping out from the sands and charging toward Beldum with his teeth emenating dark energy. Beldum doesn't waste any effort and, with his eye still closed, spins the Larvitar into the ground as he charges. The little dinosaur is still strong, but has been weakened significantly.

You call Beldum back and throw a pokeball once he releases Larvitar. The pokemon is captured within the ball and you watch it shake a few times before you hear a click. You have caught Larvitar, and you promptly release him to congratulate the pair on an excellent battle. He and Beldum also seem to share some sort of nonverbal congratulations.

Just then you see you have a spectator. Silas, top of your graduating class and fellow scholarship student, comes over to greet you.

"That was pretty great," he says, "And they're both yours, huh? You and me have got to battle some time."

"Sure, but not now," you say, "They're both injured and need some rest."

"Of course, of course," he says, nodding his head, "Besides, my two need some work first. Fighting you in particular I'd be at a disadvantage."

You see he has a strong and healthy looking male Nidoran by his side, and two balls on his belt. The two of you exchange contact information and he tells you he'll be staying in town for another day before hitting the road.

You part ways and head over to the campus pokemon center, right next to the battle arenas. After an hour or so, Beldum and Larvitar are fighting fit and you had an opportunity to grab some lunch.

You leave your pokemon in their balls for the time being, since you are headed to the library for some research. The first thing you do, with the future on your mind, is get a lay of the land around Erbaum. The only routes that go this far north are Routes 115 and 119, and you'll have to take one of them. Route 115 is a long winding mountain trail that eventually leads to either Route 121 and the Caska region to the west or Aulder City in the southwest of the region. It is the largest city in the vast and empty Danat region, and one of its only notable locations besides the Academy itself.

Route 119 is more forgiving and leads to Spen Town, a growing town that serves as a hub to and from the region. Spen Town links Route 120 which goes to the northern Nadia Region, Route 114 which heads east to the Geighnny Region, and Route 118 which links to Den City. Den City is a small city that takes a lot of traffic from the Southwestern Zatuy Region, but has fallen into crime and disrepair recently. Each of Danat's two cities has a gym, and Spen Town has a league proposal in the works.

You move on to the topic of your pokemon, pouring into research on how to best care for them. Larvitar require a lot of space generally, but are hardy and typically can scavenge their own soil without much effort. They benefit from a strong trainer who pushes them and grow through battling very well. They can be brash, which yours is certainly not, and very territorial if not reigned in. The book you recommend states that as it grows, it will grow slower and grayer, but this is a normal and positive change to full development. They reach a pupal state, which is interesting for a lizard-like monster, and eventually become dreadfully powerful.

Beldum is a bit more tricky. While they require no food, water, or even breathable air, they do require sunlight. More specifically, certain wavelenghts of radiation produced by the sun empower it. It can survive without the sun by consuming electricity from certain devices or electrionics, and the guide warns that a poorly cared for Beldum can be tremendously destructive to technology. It also states that as it grows, it will begin signaling out for another Beldum on a specific frequency. This entails some odd behavior, standing comletely still and erect for hours at a time, and even running off at times. This indicates the Beldum will soon merge and evolve with another Beldum, and the book suggests the trainer facilitate the process.

You exit the library and call your teammates, arranging a meeting time and place for the next hour. There's still a lot of daylight left and you also send a message to Silas to meet you for that battle afterwards. You head to the assigned place, a wooded area near your dormitory and convenient to the main facilities.

Oliver shows up first and similarly to you has spent most of his day preparing for the journey. His family is well-off and he has a whole host of vitamins, gadgets, and training gear packed along with some high-quality camping gear. He gives you a twistedspoon he says he found at a great price, he's always doing stuff like that.

Eventually you are joined by Mina, who joins the discussion and offers her own contributions to your luggage. She's kept mostly to the essentials, but has filled all available leftover space with books on a variety of subjects. Though there are plenty of obscure tomes to her taste, she has also accounted for both you and Oliver. There's material here you've been aching to get a look at.

You discuss the pokemon on the various routes, and gague your teammate's preferences. Route 115 is loaded with a diverse blend of pokemon, with rock, ice, and steel types common in this north and grass, water, and ground types typical to the south. There are some rare pokemon, mostly clustered in the caves, and the area is known for bagon. Route 119 is more forested, and you'll find mostly grass and ice types, but not a lot of diversity as it is a much shorter and more traveled path.

Neither of your partners is particularly biased, so they leave it to you.

"Yeah,"Oliver chimes in, "That'll give me a stronger and more well-rounded team before we hit the Aulder City Gym."

So with that, your plans are settled, and you will be leaving this afternoon. It is now time to meet Silas, so the three of you make your way to the arenas. You find he is already waiting for you and has booked a large-sized jungle arena. It's loaded with vegetation, quicksand, and other pitfalls.

"So, what do you think," He asks, smiling, "I've got two pokemon, we can do this however you want."

Oliver calls out for the match to start, and neither you nor Silas waste any time.

You seek to gain an early advantage, you call out, "Larvitar, use sandstorm."

"Zubat, Nidoran focus on the Larvitar," he commands, "Absorb, double kick."

"Beldum cover him," you shout, "Use hidden power on the Zubat!"

His pokemon are both faster than either of yours, Zubat is already latched onto Larvitar by the time he gets his sands flowing. Its extemely effective and the Zubat pulls off looking satisfied, only to be struck in the back by a black, crackling bolt from Beldum. Nidoran comes flying at Larvitar with its foot in the air and connects, then delivers a second kick in the wake of the first.

Larvitar is looking very beaten up, you don't know how much more of this he can take. The Zubat isn't much better, having missed out on any benefits from the early absorb. Both Beldum and the Nidoran are in fine shape, and they glare at each other.

Silas remains calm, "Nidoran, distract the Beldum. Zubat, finish off the Larvitar."

His pokemon snap to action, Nidoran launching kicks at Beldum while Zubat goes after Larvitar. The bat flies toward the little green pokemon, who almost seems to melt away into the rapidly spinning sands. Beldum does its best to follow your command, taking the blows from Nidoran and attempting to reorient itself to Zubat. It fires off another hidden power, which is easily enough to knock Zubat out of the match.

Larvitar still hasn't reappeared, but an ear-shattering screech pierces out from the sands. Nidoran is clearly shaken, and lets out a big shudder. Your pokemon have him surrounded, and the sands whip at him. You seem to have retaken the advantage.

Hoping to take the initiative, you call out, "Take Down, Bite!"

Syrus looks a little desperate now, "Double kick on the Larvitar!"

The Nidoran jumps toward Larvitar and kicks him, narrowly avoiding your Beldum's attacks and knocking him out, but not before Larvitar takes a decent bite on the attacking pokemon's foot. You recall him and whisper a word of praise. That evened out the fight, now its down to Beldum and Nidoran, and your blue metal monster is looking a lot better than the opposition.

"Hang in there and double kick, Nidoran!"

Nidoran calls forth what's left of his strength and launches at Beldum. Your pokemon rolls around and tries to grab it much like it did with Larvitar earlier, but to no avail. The Nidoran's attack connects, but Beldum fails to take down the enemy.

Now they appear more evenly exhausted, and a well placed blow from Nidoran will end the fight.

"Again" Silas shouts, "Double Kick!"

You cry out, "Hidden Power"

What happens next surprises both of you. Nidoran goes to kick Beldum and it connects, but your pokemon is already charging up his attack when Nidoran spins around to deliver his second blow. Beldum launches the bolt directly into his foe and the purple creature kicks him square in the eye. Both pokemon fall to the ground simultaneously.

Oliver is jumping up and down and shouting, "Double knockout! Double knockout! Ho-ly shit!"

Mina seems to have gotten into it as well, and is standing up right next to Oliver. Silas is laughing as he approaches Nidoran and Beldum, giving you a thumbs up before recalling his pokemon. You do the same and meet with the hard-faced older student.

You spend a few minutes talking shop with him and Oliver, getting each other's perspective on how it all shook out. Silas tells you about how the hidden power really threw him through a loop and he thought he was done then and there. Oliver adds in his own comments, and you all reflect on the battle.

Eventually it gets to be time for you to part ways, and you say farewell to Silas.

After grabbing a sunlamp for Beldum and a bag of enriched soil for Larvitar, the three of you gather up your belongings and wave goodbye to the Erbaum academy, heading out from your dormitory toward Route 115. You walk through the evergreen forests along the western path out of the campus and on to the rocky route. Mina mentions how it's supposed to be tough going for about a day before evening out.

There are caves around that hide rarer pokemon but also a great deal of common stock. The mountains are home to several species of flying, steel, and rock types, and there are some lakes and forrests dotted around the area. The main road holds plenty of trainers and is the best place to find decent campgrounds.

Oliver breaks the silence of your walk, "I want to look around for a second pokemon, but I would like to try to stay near the roads and take as many battles as I can."

"Well, if we're looking for pokemon, I want to go into a cave and get something cool," Mina adds, "And that might give you an edge on the competition."

You agree with Mina on looking through the caves being a good idea, and the three of you make your way toward a particular remote one that appeals to you for some reason. It takes some effort to get up there, but once you do you are glad about your decision.

You have excellent luck in the cave, finding numerous pokemon in relative abundance which are normally quite rare. You find families of Bagon, but most run off. The most common pokemon in this cave are Duskull, and it doesn't take long for your female companion to make one her own.

"I'm so excited, I love Duskull almost as much as Gastly," she squeals, earning a disapproving look from her pokemon.

Searching further, you find what looks like Deino bones near a hole in the wall, as well as a great lake that no other pokemon seem willing to go anywhere near. You could also investigate one of the Bagon dens.

You move to pick up the Deino bones, they are still relatively fresh. You hear a growling form within the hole, and see the rounded silouhette of what you assume to be the creature itself. It decides against going after you, so you manage to pick up the bones without any issue. When you pull away, the blind beast barks and rapidly moves. You hear a thud and a whimper, the creature seeming to have hit its head on the cavern wall.

You chuckle to yourself and move over to inspect the lake, but you feel a bit of a shiver. Oliver and Mina seem to have felt the same thing, and have called out Nidoran and Gastly. You pull out a pokeball, when you hear a long and melodic cry. You see the long head of a Dragonair lift into the air, flying into the sky. It dances gracefully and seems to barely register your presence before floating upward into one of the long tunnels in the cave ceiling.

A number of Dratini appear to have surfaced, and Oliver appears to be battling one with a big grin on his face.

Larvitar leaps from his pokeball to face the Deino, seeming eager to prove himself. The wild pokemon stomps his feet and lets out a cry before marching toward Larvitar.

"Sandstorm," you shout.

The Deino's march turns into a run, and he tackles him to the ground. The green pokemon braces himself for impact, but remains still and initiates his move. The tackle only does a little bit of damage, and Larvitar is utterly nonplussed, just pumping out sand from his back as quick as he can. It accumulates quickly in the cramped space and seems to already be getting to the Deino.

You look over to Oliver and see a pokeball close with a click, but he remains locked in battle with two Dratini. Mina's Gastly has its hands full with one of its own, and more are coming close. Better finish this quickly

You have to act fast, so you grab a ball from your pack and throw it at the Deino. In a flash, it is drawn into the ball. It shakes around for a few seconds before you hear that satisfying click. You allow yourself a moment of pride in your victory, before having your attention turned toward three dratini headed toward your Larvitar.

Luckily, your companions have made short work of their own dragons and have quelled the oncoming horde for the time being. The three sliding toward you have been battered a bit by the sandstorm and are very young, but are in good health.

Almost reflexively, you grab another ball out from your pack and throw it toward the crowd of Dratini. It takes them by surprise and one of them is caught within it. You throw out a second ball even quicker and snag a second one. The third Dratini furiously charges directly at you, prompting Larvitar to smack it into the water with his tail.

The other two balls lie shaking on the ground. The left one shivers only briefly before bursting open, sending a charging Dratini out that wraps Larvitar. The remaining ball keeps shaking and after what feels like an eternity clicks shut.

Your friends are walking calmly over to you and Larvitar has already dealt with the puny Dratini with minimal effort. Suddenly, you hear a thunderous sound, an angry version of the beautiful cry from before. A thunderwave flies toward you, but Larvitar swiftly jumps up an grounds it out.

The massive dragon retaliates with a thunder wave, directly hitting the ghost and causing its entire form to fade and shudder. Oliver has sent out Nidoran, who kicks at it twice before being hit by a thunderwave of her own. The beast is still at nearly full health.

"Get ready to run everyone" you scream at the top of your lungs, "On three!"

You pull out a ball from your pocket, a great ball in this case. It's the only way to be sure.

"One."

Oliver stops fumbling with his second pokeball and moves to recall Nidoran. Mina does the same with Gastly. As you count to two, she calls out for hypnosis and it hits the Dragonair just enough to daze it. On three, you throw your great ball directly at it, hitting it on the back of the head and capturing it within.

The three of you recall your pokemon and race to the exit, none of you have the courage to look back. You hear the cry of the Dragonair a few moments later, and you double your pace. You don't stop running until you see the dwindling light of dusk and orange sky. You have managed to escape the cave intact, but your pokemon are in rough shape and so are you.

You decide to move down away from the rough terrain and caves a little bit once you've all had adequate time to catch your breath. The three of you find your way back to the road and from there it's a simple matter to get to one of the many Route 115 campgrounds.

You inspect Larvitar, and he's slightly injured from the fighting but will be fine with a little bit of rest and some food. Your friends tell you that Gastly and Nidoran are both fairly damaged and paralyzed, so they require a bit of medicine and a bit more rest.

Mina familiarizes herself with her Duskull, you note it to be a very calm male. It has excellent defensive stats, poor offensive stats, an midling speed.

You each take the opportunity to inspect your new pokemon. You note that your Deino has top special attacking potential and excellent speed, but is only average in everything else. She is rash and seems to be a bit more sharklike in her face an your average Deino. She smashes her face into everything, but particularly likes crashing into Larvitar.

The Dratini are both very small and it takes them a long time to get used to you. Yours is a gentle male and Oliver's an adamant female. His seems particularly robust and thickly muscled, which you owe to him having a good eye and the pick of the litter. Yours has above average hit points and physical defense, abysmal attack, and average stats otherwise.

The minor injuries on your new pokemon are easily addressed and you sit around the campfire with your friends discussing your day and plans for the future until nightfall.

We need to earn some money so we can afford potions and balls and stuff. We've got a decent team now, so we should start searching for random NPCs to beat up.

Q. In this world, is selling pokemon that you caught considered unethical? We'll be getting a full team damn quickly at this rate.

Is hustle gonna be in effect for finding tougher porkys in the wild?

Are there carnivores that need to be fed other pokemon?

How far are you going to take deino's not seeing anything and eating literally everything? Is its accuracy perpetually at 20% and does it eat dirt like larvitar, for example?

Is it considered to be amoral to sell your pokemon for cash? That dratini should fetch a pretty penny...

The light of dawn moves across your face and you awaken feeling refreshed by a night in the fresh mountain air. You step out of your tent and move toward the center of the camping area, seeing only a few other early risers. Oliver and Mina don't seem to have gotten up yet, so you take a look at who is awake. You take the opportunity to check your phone as you look, seeing a missed call from home.

There are a pair of hikers having a hushed argument while packing in their supplies. They look fairly similar to each other, but the older one is more muscular and has a scar on his face. One youngster is sitting on a stump doing little exercises with a Rufflet. He seems to be figuring out its moves, and you watch the little eagle try his best to follow commands it doesn't quite understand. The boy is cheery despite the difficulty, and gets up to mime the actions he's looking for with enthusiasm.

You see a trifecta of tents that weren't present last night, one of which has the logo of the supply shop in the Erbaum markets where you got your own camping gear. You think it must be someone from the academy, probably other graduates who also went out the night before. You wonder who it might be.

Talking to someone who knows wtf they're doing is a very good way to Not Die. These hikers probably know how to Not Die on mountains, which is a very useful skill to have.

Plus we might be able to battle some people for money. We're low on money and low on supplies, but we have a good poke team.

You let Larvitar and Beldum out of their balls and they stretch out a little before turning their attention to you.

"Let's take a walk."

As you walk around the slightly wooded area just a stone's throw from camp, first thing that came to mind was to call home. Larvitar was exploring around a little, but Beldum filed in next to you much like you imagine a soldier would with their commanding officer. You dial at the phone, thinking of home.

It was likely Dad was just eating breakfast and would soom be off to his job at the power plant. He worked very hard and was an important supervisor, so he couldn't make it to your graduation. You and your sister were both very independant from a young age anyway, and your family didn't put much stock in ceremony no matter how much you knew you cared for each other.

The phone rings twice before you are greated with a deep, growling, "Hello?"

"Dad, it's Alex. How are you?"

"Doing fine, heading off to the plant in a few," you hear him take a sip of something and clear his throat loudly, "How was that graduation? And the camping? Must feel good to get your hands dirty after that fancy place"

The last words were said with a bit of disdain, as much as he tried to be supportive you knew Dad didn't think much of academics. You give him the answer he wants to hear, and share a little of your cave experience.

"That's good, son," he says, sounding proud, "Your a real man now. I've got to run, but you make sure you come visit for Christine's birthday next month. And call her. I know she's, well, she's Christine, but she's still your sister."

With that you hung up the phone, noticing Beldum was listening intently by your side the whole time. Larvitar seems to have found some rich soil, and is eating to his heart's content. You wander around for a bit before returning to camp. The hikers from before seem to have made little progress, and are still arguing. Oliver is awake, and seems to be helping the youngster from before with his Rufflet.

We have a good pseudo team but we need a striker. Something fast and hard hitting.
We have slow bulky shit, which is perfectly viable for building a team around, but a team comprised entirely of slow bulky shit has weaknesses.

A Deoxys would be lovely, especially since its physiology is "holy shit what?" and that's exactly the type of thing we're researching.

Healer support is also quite handy when you have a team of bulk. A Florges or Blissey wouldn't go amiss.

I'm not going to say its impossible, but it would require a lot of time, research, and connections. Not to mention finding out it exists to begin with. There are "legendary pokemon" and there are real one of a kind Legendary pokemon. The difference will be clear eventually, but Deoxys is definitely the latter category.

You decide it best to wake up Mina before it gets any later, so you make your way to her tent. Entering, you find her still asleep. Blankets cover her lower half but she's weaing some kind of silky black tank top and her pale cleavage is visible. You enjoy the sight for a few seconds before pulling yourself together. You notice a book lies next to her head still open. You shake her awake and she slowly lifts her head to meet yours.

Her eyes widen in shock for a moment before she recognizes you and pulls you close into a kiss. After a few minutes of that, she has you leave so she can get ready. You step back out into the campground and step toward the two hikers. As you draw closer, you begin to overhear bits of there argument.

"You aren't ready," the older one says, folding his arms.

"But Machop are built for this, and I've got you."

"What would mom say if you died? She'd throw me off the mountain right with you."

They both notice you approach and stop their discussion, the older one calls out, "You there, come over and help me out. Tell my brother that he ought to listen to me."

"Teddy, please," the younger one says embarassedly, "Sorry, stranger. My brother just wants you to tell me I'm not strong enough to climb Mt Thod."

"I'm barely strong enough, and I've been at it for five years longer than you," comments Teddy, "But what do you think, kid?"

"Listen, I'm not saying you can't climb that mountain.," You explain, "But even if you could, would you be okay knowing your older brother would be worrying about you the whole time?"

He seems to think it over for a moment, then looks toward his brother, "You'd really be that worried about me? It's not just you don't think I can do it?"

"I know you can do it, Bobby" Terry says evenly, " You're good, just inexperienced, and this is no small hill."

They share a moment in silence, just looking at each other, before they turn toward you and offer handshakes and thanks. Terry opens up his bag, and begins pulling out a bunch of different stones. He begins explaining each one in detail, he really knows his stuff. The old amber he found deep in a cave to the north, he points out the tiny preserved insect. He has a few moon stones, jagged and black. There's also a decent sized gold nugget. He then offers for you to take any one of your choosing, refusing to take no for an answer.

You take the nugget, this ought to net you a decent sum to put toward your dwindling funds. You thank Terry for the gift and he even gives you a phone number, telling you to call if your even looking for mountaneering lessons or even a hired guide for the caves and peaks in the region. The two of them wave you off and go back to their packing.

You decide to go do a bit of training, passing by Oliver who now has a small crowd of youngsters around him asking for advice and showing off their pokemon. He seems to be enjoying himself, and is organizing little mock battles among them. Mina is sitting nearby watching the show in the shade.

You pull out Deino a little ways off from the kids, and she immediately rushes into your leg, snapping her jaws repeatedly at the air. You take two fingers and slap her roughly on the top of the head with them, causing her to sit down immediately. This was a technique you had learned in your studies, Deino needed forceful discipline at first but were tameable with sufficient effort.

You ask her to show you the attacks she knows, and are promptly knocked to the ground by a tackle. Learning from that mistake, you have her show you the next one by pointing at a tree. A flash of blue energy blasts forth from her mouth, the dragonbreath singing the tree. You repeat the gesture for another technique and surprisingly the tree is nearly uprooted by a blast of dirt from below. It seems she knows earth power.

You decide it best to work on discipline for now, to set a good foundation for the future. You work on simple training exercises, and are able to fairly easily get her to follow you around and to go where you want her to go. When you order her to attack, the problems start. She keeps misunderstanding commands, using the wrong moves, and occasionally just loafing around.

You get frustrated after a little while with this, and decide give up for the time being, so you recall her to her ball. She dodges the light playfully, and then you lose your temper and curse loudly. This seems to scare her, so she rushes at you and bites you on the leg. You fall to the floor and immediately recall her. It seems she drew blood.

You decide not to let the experience with Deino dishearten you and direct yourself toward further training. You release Dratini, then call over Beldum and Larvitar, who were sitting together on a dirt pile while the latter ate. They greet the new arrival with cautious curiosity.

Dratini seems a bit nervous, but you give it a bit of affection and it warms up quickly. It's very small, and it only seems to be able to wrap and leer at this point. You decide to get it up to speed and utilize your more experienced pokemon to do so.

Beldum takes charge on this, since the two are similarly shaped, and he shows it general battle movements. It shows of a spark of its hidden power and Dratini quickly begins mimicking the mechanical pokemon with little sparks of its own. Soon it was firing off effective thunderwaves while Larvitar acted as the target, the green pokemon offering his input.

You take Beldum aside first. You know that typically, Beldum only learns take down before it evolves, but you also know this is no typical Beldum. You communicate with it your intention as best as you can, using the twistedspoon as a prop. He seems taken with it, magnetizing it to his body. Then he fires off his hidden power, which is different than usual. It seems to be a blast of force and it starts to give you a headache after a while. He drops the spoon and it goes back to normal. Seems as though the move can change type with the twistedspoon held at least.

You instruct him on a few basic attack exercises and leave him at it independently while you turn your attention to Larvitar. You talk to it about its speed and it jumps up excitedly. It begins to make strange poses, like sime type of weird yoga that involves jaw poses. Afterward, it moves around much quicker and demonstrates its bite has grown more powerful by crushing a small rock. Seems it knows dragon dance. With that little revelation, you have it work on its defenses by taking hits from Beldum.

You and Dratini work on moves together, and you show it a demonstration of dragon rage on your pokedex. It seems awed and tries to charge up some blue draconic energy of its own. It only manages to get a little out, which spirals around before dissipating. You work with that for a while and eventually get the basics of twister, though it'll need more work to be combat ready.

Your pokemon work hard while you watch them, offering suggestions and tips as you go. After a good deal of time, everyone seems a bit tired so you call for a stop. Turning attention to the camp, Oliver's crowd seems to have dissipated and there are only a few kids left. Mina is talking with a young woman who seems to be one of your former classmates.

I'm guessing Routes 120 and 118 follow a river.
Route 115 is probably a continental valley or the side of a mountain range.
121 is a highway/railway, as is 117.
Is that roughly correct?
For a region like this to be settled at all, it can't be all desert - meaning there's an ocean upwind of it, without any large mountain ranges in between.
That would put some rivers in this region. Possibly also canyons and floodplains depending on local rocks.

She is modestly dressed, with a long skirt and sweater that don't give you a good look at her figure. She wears glasses and wears her dark brown hair in a loose bun.

She waves politely when you approach, then turns back to Mina who grabs your arm when you come near.

"As I was saying, the three of us ended up getting pretty lost. Veronica and I were scared but Harold kept us together, I'm surprised to say he's pretty brave."

She turns to you, "Oh, you and Harold are friends right? He's gone out with Veronica for pokemon, but I'm sure he'd like to see you when he gets back."

"Why didn't you go," Mina asks.

You think about how pokemon storage works, it's a fascinating concept but you understand only the basics. Essentially, a pokemon is teleported into a pocket dimension contained within a pokeball and placed into stasis. The pokemon box system works similarly, but on a larger scale. Most trainers have arrangements with ranches to circumvent the old PC box system entirely these days due to ethics questions.

>"Sure"
>>
>>1911713
Yeah, your guys go directly to Pine when you catch more than 6. This is per limits on your license, to which each pokeball is automatically registered on purchase.
>>
>>1911721
I find it odd that Poaching is considered extremely unethical in the pokemon world,
but capturing pokes and trading them for other pokes is considered morally fine,
and receiving a pokemon as an award for winning a competition is also considered fine.

You'd think just a straight poke for cash trade wouldn't be much different morally than a poke for prize or poke for poke trade, but I guess not.
>>
>>1911743
I guess it's a matter of scope.
If you live in the woods, and you cut down a tree, that's fine
But if you're a multinational corporation and you bulldoze the entire forest, you got a problem.
>>
>>1911747
I think it's only poaching if it's a protected species? Or if you go over your limit?

You and the ladies make your way out of camp and head into the trees at Maxine's direction. After a short trip, it starts to get a little darker and you begin to hear wild pokemon. You walk deeper in, taking the lead, and the women follow you.

Half the professors I know of respond to the word "Ethics" like a father of four reacts to the phrase "Child molester".
It's like someone ordered two years' worth of big fat steamy shits on all your upcoming work.

Not to say that the idea of doing Good is a bad thing, but any time you have to prove / enforce rules of conduct for not being a bad guy, they're inevitably going to be such a spanner in the works that your work is now 65% spanner by weight.

As you walk deeper into the forest, you hear rustling ahead that grows louder as you approach. It seems that you've come across a fight between two seedot and a teddiursa. They seem to be matched evenly, and come to a standstill as you approach.

>What do you do? What do you tell your teammates to do?
>>
>>1911799
Watch them, when one of them gets close to fainting Maxine throws a ball.
>>
>>1911799
1. Back off
2. Wait.
3. Scan the three with Pokedex just to get them recorded.

Ursaring might not be a bad partner for the Chansey, but I'd want it to be weaker before trying to make a move on it
>>
>>1911799
Bring out a pokemon. Maxine should too. She'll catch one of those, right? Best confirm it with her as well. As for which, beldum, probably.
>>
>>1911799
>Wait til the teddiursa becomes weak enough and then tell Maxine to throw a pokeball, just hang back for now.

You motion for everyone to back off, and slowly step away from the quarreling pokemon. They resume their fighting, and once they're suitably distracted, you all release your pokemon. Beldum stands at your side, observing the situation. The girls release their own pokemon, Mina's Duskull floats passively while Maxine's Happiny looks nervous.

The Teddiursa furiously swipes at the two Seedot, but the attacks do little while the two passive plant pokemon just bide their time. After a few moments of this, one of the Seedot is knocked out. The other one explodes outward in an explosion of energy, launching into the Teddiursa's face while it futilely lifts its arms to defend itself. That blow did a lot of damage, but Seedot is weak itself and the bear pokemon simply knocks it away.

You tell Maxine that now is her opportunity, and she commands Happiny forth. While the little pink creature distracts it, you tell her to throw a ball.

The ball launches across and smacks the Teddiursa on its ear, capturing it within. The ball shakes and shakes and, just when it seems like it's about to click shut, bursts open in a flash. Maxine has a look of determination and calls out for a sweet kiss.

Happiny kisses a pink mist toward Teddiursa, who wobbles back and forth before charging toward the Happiny. It trips on a root and falls to the ground. Maxine senses her opportunity and throws another ball. This time, the Teddiursa is captured.

You and Mina congratulate Maxine on her new capture, and she thanks you for your assistance. You keep walking forward into the woods, and find yourself in a grove which surprisingly still has snow piled up. You inspect the area for a bit and find a nevermeltice is the source. You pluck it out of the large snow pile it is sitting atop and into your pack, and it is absolutely freezing to the touch.

As you turn back, you are met by a pair of Snover on their way back to the area with several berries in tow. They seem fairly agitated and begin shouting out at you

>What do you do?
>>
>>1911956
Lore Snover.
Why would Snover be gathering snow and berries in this area?
>>
>>1911956
this >>1911960
>>
>>1911960
>>1911966

You know that Snover typically live high on snowy mountains, them being down this low and at this time of the year especially is very strange. Also, two Snover is too small a grouping for them. Thinking on it, you imagine they were separated from a group for some reason and are trying their best to survive.
>>
>>1911984
Might be worth capturing them and sending them somewhere they can live.
I don't think it'd be worth keeping a Snover on the team tho.
>>
>>1911956
wreck their shit for experience
>>
>>1911984
Battle them, ask Maxine if she's interested in them.
Lets not catch them, they're grass/ice but i think we should save our slots for a fire type.
>>
>>1911956
I vote capture we can release them in a better area plus more type variation in our team is good no matter what.

it would be a good idea to start a new thread given how your in autosage and about half way to falling off.

Speaking from experience the lower the thread falls the less traffic it generates to the point that threads on page 7+ are largely dead. 4-6 are halfway dead.

Even in very popular quests once it starts to fall off its a good idea to start a new one around halfway things start to slow enough its a good idea.
>>
>>1912137
On the other hand, someone will complain if you have two threads on the board.
>>
>>1912071
You ask your companions whether or not they have any interest in capturing the Snover, to which Mina declines but Maxine offers an enthusiastic nod. She seems to have gotten a little confidence, and you want to help her along, so you line up next to her and suggest a double battle then.

"If you don't want it," Mina starts, looking concerned, "You should capture it and we can release it somewhere more appropriate."

Funny, you were just thinking the same thing. Either way, Maxine has sent out her Hapinny. You send out a pokemon of your own.

>Pick a pokemon

You and Maxine both shout your commands.

"Take Down"

"Sweet Kiss"

You manage to take the opposing pokemon by surprise, Beldum smashes into the one closest to him with a take down that brings the Snover low and severely injures it. Your foe is ready and manages to get a critical razor leaf in Beldum's eye, but it's clear your side came out in much better shape. Your foe can hardly stand.

Meanwhile, Happiny launched its own attack at its own opponent. The further Snover tripping over its own feel and falling to the ground. Maxine is really into it, and is already shouting out for a pound.

What do you do?

You call back Beldum and throw out a pokeball toward the Snover, making a mental note you only have a one poke ball and one great ball left. It smacks it on the stomach and takes the pokemon in. It shakes around a bit, but quickly clicks shut. You watch Maxine as you collect your quarry.

Her Happiny launches a pound which connects squarely on the confused Snover, who's attempt at retaliation only serves to hurt him further. Happiny jumps away at Maxine's command and she throws a pokeball of her own. Hers shakes briefly and clicks shut, she's smiling wide.

You exchange congratulations with each other and rejoin Mina to decide your next move.
