It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies. After an ordeal that involved Elves, the Wilde Jaege, and even more Elves, you finally made your way back to the warcamp, that was transferred to the world as well.

Now, you are on a crusade, to new land in the north, nestled away in the mountains, named South Laaegonel. Filled with strange beings, a mad king, and war all around, your work is certainly cut out for you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

After the battle, Cellica left, angry at you, you learned more about the land, and met several new people. Now, you ride in battle to the rescue of Ardon Glen, a trade town that resists the mad king who rules the land with an iron fist.

It’s a beautiful afternoon, with clear skies, and a cool breeze that would whip through your hair, if not for the steel helm protecting your head.

The thundering of hoofbeats and screaming of men is all you can hear. Your lance lowered, you join with them in their war cries, screaming something unintelligible, as you charge the host before you, your Knight-brothers on each side of you.

A wall of death and destruction, five warbands of the Knights Teuton, supported by two of the Knights Templar, crash into the force of King Micheal "The Mad" Asragain like a stone flung from a trebuchet, crushing some beneath their armored warhorses, some, impaling them with their lances.

You are among them, managing to spear two of the ragged soldiers on your lance, before it snaps, and you drop the broken remains, unsheathing your sword, going to work hacking away at the enemy below you.

Gunnar lashes out, kicking one in the head, caving in his skull, and you stab one in the throat, but these seem to be as resilient as those that you encountered on the road here, and they refuse to fall. Hacking downwards again, you split his head open, and kick him away, and urge Gunnar forward, trampling the one before you beneath his hooves.

The defenders of Ardon Glen, now seeing your charge, have redoubled their defense, fighting like men possessed against the King’s men who are climbing up ladders, and pushing siege towers in place. However, you can clearly see from a quick glance that the defenders are ragged and tired, and can’t hold out much longer. You need to do something, and fast.

Your blade cutting through another Kingsman's neck, you begin to formulate a plan then and there.

"Kathrin!" You shout for your lieutenant, while kicking another soldier in the head with a steel-plated foot, "I need you!"

And just like that, she's there, materializing out of the battle like some sort of spirit, appearing by your side, riding next to you, covering your right side.

"Yes, sir? What do you need?" Her voice, although shouting to be heard above the sounds of violence around you, is remarkably calm and even, even as she spikes a man through the eye on her sword.

"Tell the archers to fire on the ladders, we can't let the defenders get overwhelmed!"

Nodding silently, she salutes, before wheeling her horse smartly around, and riding quickly the way she came,

Focusing on the battle around you, you fend off two spear-wielding Kingsmen by cutting off the heads of their spears, and rushing them with Gunnar, trampling them beneath his ironshod hooves. Behind and above you, you hear the faint hum of arrows in flight, and turn your attention to the enemies attacking the walls, making sure to determine how much damage is done.

Arcing downward, the arrows hiss as they fall towards the enemy. Surprisingly, they all hit, each slamming into a body, causing the Kingsmen to drop like flies, despite their lack of pain. The defenders look at your army in shock, and cheer, pushing those few that remain back to the wall, tossing the ladders back into the main force.

All around you, the Kingsmen start to dwindle, but you notice that they're not going alone, unfortunately, There are several empty saddles, and you see men getting dragged to the ground, never to be seen again, not rising from the mass of men.

With grim determination, you push forward into the enemy, surrounded by your brothers, your face set in stone, ready to avenge those who have fallen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Sighing, you drag the body over to the massive pyre, and throw him unceremoniously on the pile of corpses. It had taken the greater part of the day to defeat the Kingsmen, mostly in part because they would not surrender, or rout, like any normal man. They fought to the last man, and exacted a heavy toll on your army, with sixty knights dead or dying.

The defenders of the town hadn't sallied forth yet, as much as they appreciated your efforts, they most likely had to gather their own dead and wounded, much as you did, and you have not heard nor seen anything from the town yet.

Kathrin stands next to you warily, insisting on checking each body personally before you carry it to the pyre, and when asked why she's so jumpy, she simply replied, "Can't be too careful, my lord."

Shaking your head at the thought, you are shaken out of your concentration by several shouts, and looking around, you realize that the gate to the town is opening. Walking immediately over to meet whomever is approaching, you wipe the sweat, dirt, blood, and gore from your face, while smoothing your hair down. You are a gentleman, after all.
>>
>>1879141

Joined by Sigmund and Gunther, you raise an eyebrow and ask where the rest of the Knight-Captains are.

"They're handling the clean-up effort, Mein Prinz, besides, would you really want the likes of Veidt to be in our greeting party?"

Shaking your head, you suppose that might be counterproductive.

Coming closer to the party from Ardon Glen, you carefully look the apparent leader up and down. He's a young man, dressed in some sort of... skirt, with a tunic under it. He carries a sword that has clearly seen use in the past few hours, and sports a bandage around his left arm.

He studies you, Gunther, and Sigmund carefully for a second, before stabbing his sword into the ground, holding a hand out for you to shake, and smiling.

"That was some fine work you did, sir, and I must thank you for helping defend my home. "

Taking his hand, you shake, and he continues to speak. "M'name's Bennet MacShim, Lord-Mayor of Ardon Glen, sirs, what might yours be?"

"Ritter-Kapitan Victor Reis, Ritter-Kapitan Gunther Friedrich, and Ritter-Kapitan Sigmund Steppuhn, pleased to make your acquaintance."

Nodding, Bennet says, "Likewise, ser. I'm sure the rest of my people will feel the same."

Motioning behind him, the Lord-Mayor smiles, a winning grin on his face, "It would be my utmost pleasure to invite you to my home, so we can speak of what comes next."

Sharing a look with Sigmund and Gunther, you shrug, and follow the young Lord. Kathrin, standing by your side, leans in close, and says, "Do you wish for me to gather the rest, my lord? It would only take but a minute."

Thinking for a second, you shake your head, whispering, "No, Kathrin, any other time, maybe, but the men need their leaders, especially after a battle." You smile. "Thank you, anyways."

Nodding, Kathrin bows slightly, and says, "As you wish, ser," and falls into step beside you, keeping an eye out around you.

Making small talk, Bennet speaks up. "So, sers, where might you all be from? I'm afraid I don't quite recognize your colors."

Sigmund answers, politely. "We are from a realm known as Germany, milord. It's very far, I would not expect you to know of it."

"Ah, so that explains it! And might I ask your purpose in lovely South Laaegonel?"

As you come closer to the gates of Ardon Glen, you think briefly over what to say. There are many reasons as to why you're here, but what is the most pressing, now?

Unsure as to the Lord-Mayor's stance on the Imperium, you decide to tell the broadest, most neutral answer, but also, the most true.

"We're here to spread the word of our Lord, Jesus Christ. That includes bringing peace and protecting the innocent, I would think."

Bennet takes this in stride quickly, smiling. "Ah, holy men, then? Well, your presence is very much welcome!"

Passing through the open gates of Ardon Glen, you look around, finally getting a chance to look at the town from the inside. Unfortunately, bodies covered in white sheets lie in orderly lines, and you wince. The siege had clearly been taking its toll on the town even before the Kingsmen launched their attacks.

All around you, the men and women of the town look at you curiously, and then you realize that they're all holding weapons. The entire population of the town was involved in its' defense... you've heard of such things before, such as the Siege of Jerusalem a few months ago, but you never saw its' effects firsthand...You feel sympathy for these people, and hatred for the tyranny that they've suffered under.

You resolve to protect them, right there.

Guided through the cobble streets by the Lord-Mayor and his guard, you eventually reach a stone manor, while small anywhere else, is large for the town, surrounded by a low wall. Opening the door for you, Bennet lets you into his home, which is a comfortable affair with braziers, torches, and rugs filling the room, keeping it pleasantly warm.

Sitting down in a broad-backed chair, at the head of a table, Bennet motions for you to sit, and says, "So, sers. You've rescued us from a tyrant king's army, but I'd like to learn what's next for you. If possible, I would wish to offer as much assistance as possible."

Nodding, you sit, "Before we talk of any other business, there is an unfortunate bit of news that we have. As we were near Bindon Clearing, we came across a woman ill-abused by South Eagle "orcs", and rescued her. She was not from Bindon, so we brought her here, to see if anyone knows her."

"Very well, if you bring her in the town, I'll see what I can do. Unfortunate bit of business, that."

Steepling his fingers, Lord-Mayor MacShim leans back in his chair. "So, what is your next move?"

You, Gunther, and Sigmund talk it over for a bit, but eventually are unable to come to a conclusion, without enough information.

"Might you tell me more of what is going on in the area, first?"

Bennet nods. "Of course. I'm sure you know what is going on with the King, correct?" You signify yes, you do. "Well that's not the only problem we have here. The South Eagle raiders have been getting more and more bold, and I hear whispers of some Warlord of theirs come to lead them. As if that's not bad enough, we've got were-wolves running through the streets at night, as well as, until recently, the Kingsmen sieging the town."

Sighing, and accepting a cup of wine from his servant, he takes a sip, before continuing.

"To the north, we can't reach the Penitent Brothers of Battle, holy warriors like yourself, and every messenger we send doesn't come back. I was hoping against hope that they would show up to help, before you arrived."

"To the east, the Dwarves of Deep Dale refuse to trade until it's safe, which is bleeding our coffers dry. The Legion blocking the roads north doesn't help much, either."

"And finally, the king in Tir Duchais... he's the largest issue, right now. I don't know what could've caused him to become a tyrant... I knew him, and he was a good man." Bennet takes a drink of his wine, disheartened. "We... have to stop him sooner or later, I'm afraid. Before he does any more damage to this land."

Nodding, you scratch your chin, thinking.

Let's finish our business with the Imperium but first can we ask the Mayor about his opinion on the Legion. Also dragging out the Legion will be better since they won't be able to back stab us while we resolve all the internal problems in the region. Conversing with Sigmund and Gunther, you eventually tell Bennet that you'd like to figure out what is going on at Highrock, maybe gaining the aid of the Penitent Brothers of battle, and drive the last remnants of the Legion from South Laaegonel. It wouldn't do for them to come into the highlands after you while you were setting the country to rights.

"Sensible. I like it. Well, if you ever need a place to stay, your men are always welcome to set up camp nearby. Personally, I wouldn't be averse to a large army settin' up nearby. myself. But, I suppose, you must do what you must do."

As the servant comes back with more wine, Bennet offers all four of you each a cup.

"Wine?"

Accepting graciously, Sigmund and Gunther start to make small talk with Bennet about the town, about their warbands, and various comments about the weather. Meanwhile, Kathrin, sipping her wine, looks at you, and raises an eyebrow, nodding towards the door subtly. You've been around her enough to know that she's probably asking you for permission to get the woman from the waystation.

Giving a small nod, you smile and return to the conversation, as Bennet asks you a question. Standing up quietly, and slipping out of the room, Kathrin is gone.

"So, Ser Victor, might I learn something about you? As much as I appreciate your efforts in defending my town, I'd like to know more about one of the heroes of the hour."

"Well, as you might know, we came from the south, from around Mornaur. Well, as you might know, there is a village on the edge of the forest, and when we arrived, something strange happened..."

Bennet leans forward, clearly interested in your story, and nods for you to go on, and you oblige, giving him an account of the events that followed your first contact with the local villagers, (excepting details about the elves.)

The Wilde Jaege, an Elven city, "Dark" elves... all of it feels like it happened so long ago. And of course, the subject of your travels around Mornaur brings a certain someone to mind...

Cellica.

You hope she's alright, even if she is mad at you. You consider her to be a friend, even if she might not reciprocate that feeling right now.

Continuing to tell your story, which Bennet follows closely, hanging onto every word, you talk away the wait, until Kathrin comes in, escorting the woman from the waystation in. She doesn't seem to be doing too well, with wild hair and dark bags under her eyes, which, you suppose is natural, considering what she went through.

The sight of the woman stuns Bennet, who pushes his chair back quickly, running to the woman, and wrapping his arms around her, hugging her tightly.

"Aigneis! Oh my gods, I was so worried..."

Returning the hug, the woman begins to shake, and you see tears forming in her eyes, relieved.

Wiping the tears away, Bennet looks around, confused. "But what happened to Sean?" Wincing, the woman looks away from Bennet, and he realizes immediately. "Oh... sister, I'm sorry..."

Looking to you, Bennet gives you a pained smile. "Sers, I thank you for bringing back my sister-in-law, but... if you might leave for a while? I... need to take care of her."

Looking at each other, Sigmund and Gunther shrug, before saying solemn farewells, and heading outside the Lord-Mayor's manor, you and Kathrin following.

Closing the door behind you, you sigh, and follow your fellow Knight-Captains through the town, heading back to your warbands. They don't have much to say, but it's actually Kathrin who breaks the silence, speaking directly to you.

"Sir, once we're someplace more appropriate, might I speak to you? It can wait, if you like, though."

Shrugging, you nod. You see no reason to not allow it.

"Sure, Kathrin, after we reach the Warband, we can speak."

Giving a small nod of acknowledgement, Kathrin doesn't say anything more about the subject, instead opting to walk next to you in silence.

Observing the town around you, you look at the villagers sympathetically as they carry their dead to their... is that a chapel? Interesting. You know they have different gods here, but the structure is oddly similar to a barony's chapel.

Odd.

Continuing on your way, you are approached by a African-looking man, although he is dressed in the recognizable garb of a wealthy merchant.

Stopping in your tracks, you look at the merchant as he comes closer, extending his hand for you to shake.

"Ahh, the heroes of the day! I managed to catch you before you left! Perfect!'

Shaking each of your hands vigorously, the man smiles, continuing, "My name is Kyran Daltell, and I am a merchant who has a keen interest in the trade in the region. Although I am a loyal servant of the Emperor (blessed be,) I also would like to ask, are you going to "take care of" the problems in the region? Shaking your head, you don't answer his question, instead, stonewalling him, as you continue to walk past him.

"Our objectives are our own to know, you'll just have to watch and wait."

Giving you a broad smile, Kyran nods and slaps your shoulder, jovially.

"Oh, I know the values of secrecy! Worry not, it was a thin hope that you would tell me anyways, farewell, brave knights! I hope to see you again!"

That was... a strange encounter. You sincerely hope you don't have to see him again. Something was... off about him.

Whatever, you need to get to your men as soon as possible, they need to see their leader, especially after a battle.

Walking out into the fields around Ardon Glen, you examine the progress of cleaning up the battlefield that your men have made. They've gotten pretty far in gathering the fallen Crusaders, and rounding up the scared, riderless horses that weren't too injured and had to be put down, but there are still Kingsmen carpeting the battlefield, despite the pyres already burning.

Saying farewell to Sigmund and Gunther, who head to their warbands, ready to lead the future attempts to make camp. Walking past your warband, who appreciate your presence, you crest a hill and look down on a stream on the other side, Kathrin walking next to you.

Stopping, and looking at Kathrin, you quirk an eyebrow, and say,

Alright, I'm back, sorry for the vanishing.

"What's so important that Sigmund and Gunther couldn't hear it, Kathrin?"

Kathrin looks at you seriously, and seems to mull over her next statement.

"Maybe not... important, but certainly sensitive."

Looking you in the eyes, Kathrin continues,

"Victor, I've noticed that ever since Cellica left, you've seemed a bit... reserved. You haven't had much time to talk to Marcus or Natalia, either, with how busy we are now."

She stands silent for a second, and then asks, "So, would you want to train with me in your spare time, my lord? I saw that it was one of your favorite ways to spend time with your friends, so I thought..."

She struggles to get out the next few words.

"As your frien- lieutenant, would you like someone to train with? To keep your morale up."

Looking at you with her steel gray eyes, she says, "It wouldn't do for the men to hear this, after all, so that's why I brought you out here."

Standing there, slightly stunned, you blink. Kathin is a consummate professional, but in her own special way, she's trying to show you friendship.

>"Sure, Kathrin, we can start tomorrow, if you like?"
>"You know you can be my friend and my lieutenant, right? Of course."
>"No, I'm fine, but thank you regardless."

Chuckling and shaking your head, you just say, "You know you can be my friend and my lieutenant, right? Of course."

Giving a slight smile, Kathrin nods, letting out a breath she had been holding in for a bit.

Turning back to your warband, you motion with your head for her to follow.

"Now come, Kathrin, we've got work to do."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

It had been the work of three hours to set up camp, and even less to get everyone settled down, and to set up the watches.

Lying in your tent, you quickly drifted away, welcoming sleep. However, when you began to dream, you realized something.

You were still lucid.

Confused, you looked around, but all you saw was darkness all around.

Behind you, whispering into your ear, an oily, insidious voice creeps into your thoughts.

Do you think you are righteous?

Avoid answering whatever this is. We don't know what it is, so I'd rather not tell it ANYTHING until we know we can.

Whipping around, you swing, and hit nothing, your fist swishing through air.

"Who's there?"

Keeping on the lookout for any sound that might indicate where the voice is coming from, you stand absolutely still, but you hear... nothing. Not even your own breath.

Behind you, the voice whispers again.

Do you trust yourself?

Blinking, you squint, and see... something.

Do you trust in your god?[/]i

In front of you there is a form, somewhat like a human, but... wrong, somehow.

It cocks its' head, as if curious.

>"What are you?"

You frown, and look at the creature, saying, "Yes, I trust in my God and I trust in myself."

This, for some reason, causes the creature to go into an apoleptic fit, caughing and laughing like a sickly man.

You amuse me.

It shuffles closer, and shoves an elongated, sharp finger into your forehead, causing you to cry out in agony.

Every inch of your body feels like fire.

Screaming in agony as every part of your body writhes in pain, you wake with a start, shivering, and covered in sweat.

Panting, gasping for air, you look around, shaking, clenching and unclenching your fists. You see that it's the crack of dawn, hearing a rooster crow somewhere, and seeing a sliver of light break through your tentflap.

What in the hell was that?

Taking a deep breath, you look at your hands, and swing yourself out from your cot, standing up, and stretching, you pull on a tunic and trousers. Exiting your tent, you shake your head as you feel the chill highland air.

Looking for Edgar, you prepare yourself for the day, which, after what just happened, could have anything happen.

(Continued tomorrow.)

I'll be here sometime around 3 PM EST-6 PM EST.

Thanks for joining me today.
