>Last time of Hunter x Hunter quest

Derrick preps for his confrontation with the infamous “blackwood” gang of Barry’s street by getting his weapons ready and spending his remaining time studying up on Zaban city and getting his ass-kicked by an emo

After That he gets off the ship, he gets pulled up b y the Carlton Twins to make a speech to other aspiring hunters. he shakes them to the core with his words, inspiring them to move forward with their goals but never forget they are crushing the dreams other people as they do so.

He then moves on with Rea to Barry’s street, the fastest route to the moonlight forest where the way to reach the Hunter Exam site can be found. Will they make it through Barry’s street alive?

Let’s find out now!

>Walk right through

Trying to sneak your way through a major criminal-infested street is pointless; they probably got guards on every corner of this street, so rather than sneak through, you drop your dufflebag on the floor and take out your equipment. You slip on your combat gloves and put on your reinforced boots and then you grab your Ranger bow and hold it at the ready. Rea speaks up, “I assume that means we aren’t taking the quiet way in?” she says with her arms crossed

“Too dangerous, we don’t know enough of this area to be able to sneak around, so rather leave our backs open, let’s show them we aren’t scared and push through.”

“We could be walking right into our deaths you know?”

“And we’ll be sure to look the boney bastard in the eye as we spit right in it, there’s no turning back so let’s move forward and seize the day with no care for the future!”

“I feel like you barely think about the future as is but I guess worrying will only make us hesitate. Well then, let’s go.”

You nod and move forward. You and Rea walk in a straight line down the street, Rea stays at your back and scans the surroundings to watch for anyone while you keep your bow at the ready to attack anyone who jumps out. You look to Rea as she reaches into her suit and pulls out a gun.

“Damn Rea. Is that your secret weapon? I didn’t think you were the kinda girl to carry a gun in your back pocket, how dangerous.”

“It’s a CZ P07, a light, compact and quick trigger pistol, the perfect weapon for quick and precise take-downs, it is also great for concealment, i always carry this with me."

"I didn't think you were this paranoid."

"I'm not, i'm just careful and no, it is not my secret weapon”

“How the hell did you sneak that past the airship guards? And if you had a gun this whole time, why didn’t you use it back on the ship when I was being attacked?”

“You wanted me to fire a gun at your back while you were jumping around?”

“Good point, but how you’d sneak that thing on the ship? They search everyone before letting them on.”

“I have my methods.”

You sigh from exasperation. “Oh that one’s a classic. You’re as resourceful as you are secretive Rea.” Well at-least she got a way to protect herself, less things to hold you back in the coming fights.

You walk slowly, tensions high, watching everything that seems out of place or any abnormal movements, you can feel your nerves as they rack from focusing too hard.

Anyone could jump out at any moment, so every moment feels like an eternity. It’s been ten minutes now, you’re beginning to get frustrated, if you’re gonna jump someone then at-least do it before they grow grey hairs damn it!

Every cell in your body is on edge right now, “I don’t see anyone.” Rea’s voice breaks you from your trance. You answer back while keeping your eyes ahead of you, “Y-Yeah, that's strange. We’re almost down the main street and yet no one’s popped out and the buildings seem unoccupied. Either they’re really good at hide their presences or they aren’t here at all.”

“That would be nice but also unlikely, the police still get attacked whenever they get near this place, so they have to be hiding somewhere near, watching us, waiting for the right moment to strike.”

Yes, just keep adding to the pressure Rea, that certainly helps calm you down, you keep talking to take your mind off the stress,
" So,You said you got this ‘secret weapon’ ready back on the ship, right? With all this build-up, it better be something crazy and I mean giant energy cannon-tier crazy.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, a giant energy cannon has way too many weaknesses to be used as a weapon. First of all, is that it's way too heavy to carried around anywhere. It's loud and bright enough to be spotted by a semi-deaf, blind man, not to mention it would be easy to dodge it as the energy build-up would too long to fire a good shot. The energy cost would be tremendous, so it would only be able to shoot one inaccurate, highly unstable energy blast. What idiot would even consider creating such a stupid weapon?”

“Whoa, I didn't think you were an expert on energy-based weaponry.”

“Have you never heard of sarcasm Derrick?”

“Nothing you ever say sounds like sarcasm Rea.”

“That sounds like a personal problem to me Derrick. Perhaps you should get your ears checked if you have a hard time detecting changes in tone.”

“How the hell do you expect me to do that when you're the most monotonous person I've ever met?”

“You tell me.” She answers. This girl is too sassy for someone with such a polite sounding voice.

But, strangely enough, you’ve calmed down quite a bit thanks to that. You noticed it before, but she has incredible observational skills, she never lets anything slip, she noticed you panicking and tried to calm you down immediately. But did she do that because she’s worried about you? Or is it because she doesn’t want you slowing her down? You can never tell with her. Well it helps either way.

You keep a silent and calm focus; you walk onward slowly but surely to the end of the street. You get halfway across the street before something finally happens. You hear something in the distance you stop and observe your surroundings, you moved out of the main business area and to a more commercial district, a lot of empty coffee shops and drug stores that used to serve stressed out business men after a long day of work, now run-down and have bullet holes in their windows. ahead of you is a curved road that leads directly unto to a road leading to the countryside, this is the quickest route to the moonlight forest.

You’re almost to the end, so this is the homestretch. You ready yourself and listen to the sound in the distance, that's when you hear it.

You and Rea both stop in unison; you focus a little and notice that the sound is coming from straight ahead, down the road you want to go.

You notch your bow as you slowly back away from the open path, the sound keeps getting closer, eventually you hear the sound clearly, *VROOOOOOOOOMMMMMM*, is that a car? , “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”
And that’s the sound of someone screaming in fear, looks like those bastards caught some poor fool and are attacking him (her? That scream sounded girly as hell.).

Well this isn’t good, their coming right this way and they have a car and guns on their side, Rea speaks up quickly,” That sound is only a few meters away, we have about a minute to move, I think it would be best if we hide, we can ambush them from the shadows.”. That's probably the best course of action, but if you leave that man in the line of fire while you ready your attack, there’s no guarantee he’ll survive.

You can’t dilly dally! Time to make a choice……

>Stand your ground: you’ll lose the element of surprise but you’ll be able to recuse the poor bastard from dying a brutal death.

>Set-up an ambush: A free attack against a gang of armed psychopaths sounds nice, but that means leaving your girly-sounding friend high and dry while you’re fighting.

>Mix it up a little: Send someone to setup up an ambush while the other stands out in the open to help the girly man out, however that person be the main focus of their attacks for a good bit.

>No, we have to go: This is an unnecessary fight, it sounds cold but that guy is currently distracting the gang and giving you a clear way to escape, you said it yourself; you can’t go out of your way to help people just because you feel bad, you have to pass the hunter exam.

>Stand your ground

Man you’ve been making bad decisions all day, but this next one might just be your worst yet.

“No.” you promptly tell Rea before she can move, “We stay here, if we move that unlucky bastard may, he may end up dead and we’ll have his blood on our hands, I’m no hero but I couldn’t sleep well at night knowing that.”

Rea gives a look of acknowledgement and speaks, “For someone who keeps talking about how people shouldn’t go out of their way to help others, all you’ve been doing is helping people you have no obligation to, even though you get nothing out of it.” You look back at her and she looks you straight in the eye, “That’s something only a hero would do. Wouldn’t you agree?”

A terrible memory comes rushing back to you,

“As you stand here among the this sea of corpses, tell me Derrick. Do you feel like a hero yet?” A familiar, taunting voice comes back to you, “No Rea, I’m……” *BANG**BANG**BANG*

You turn your head to the sound coming straight ahead of you. that's when you see a truly grotesque scene un-fold before you.

As you look to the road ahead, you see three cars come rushing down streets, the people inside the car stick their hands out the window to shoot and shout into the air, however the thing that truly disturbs you is the person strapped on the hood of the first car.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" he screams, his voice hoarse from all the screaming. he wears a white collar shit and tie along with blue khaki pants, clearly some kind of office worker who wandered into the wrong side of town.

they tied his arms to the rear-view mirrors of the car and positioned him low enough to bring his feet skating across the asphalt, making them bloody and bruised, the horror the scene before you fills with a mix of fear and rage at the drivers of the cars. they see you and Rea standing in the middle of the Road and proceed to stop, skidding and nearly landing on it's side from the sudden stop. The other vehicles stop in tandem, locking off the road with their cars.

The driver of the first car gets out of his car, showing himself to be none other then Esau Blackwood himself.Esau was a towering mass of muscle, standing at 6'8", dwarfing your 6'2 stature. Wearing a military-style utility vest over a black muscle shirt, he wears military boots with black combat pants.

If you didn't know he was a former military vet, his appearance would have made you mistake him for a real soldier.

He steps out and looks at you, a grin spreads across his face, nearly crushing the cigarette in his mouth as he speaks up, "Now, What do we have here!? a couple of idiots walking around on my turf! there's no way your stupid enough to come wandering in here like this dumbass! so i'm gonna give you ten seconds to state your reason for standing on my road before i splatter your brains all over the pavement!"

How do you respond?

>Aggressively: I'm here to kick your ass and help that dumbass over there, so how about you stand you down before i make you taste the curb bastard!

>Persuasively: You don't want to enrage them, your only objective is to save this guy and get out, maybe you can strike a deal?

>Silence: You have neither the time nor the energy to spare talking to this scum, better give him the cold shoulder as you look for an escape route.

>Aggressively

"I'm here to kick your ass and help that dumbass over there, so how about you stand down quietly before you end up tasting the floor!" you say as you glare at the big bastard, he laughs at the top his lungs, "Damn little man! either you got balls of steel or you've got brain problems! Don't you know who i am!?" his loud voice booms through the street.

"Of course i know who you are. if i remember correctly, your first name is Shove-it, last name: up-your-ass! how about you stop talking so i help you live up to your name." you put your hands and move your legs to a fighting stance.

Esau smiles at your aggression, "Well that's just rude! i don't imagine your girl over there is as suicidal as you are. Well lady? if you give up now and ditch that loser, we'll let you walk free."

Rea doesn't even bat an eye and responds, "It's ironic that you would tell me to run away Mr.Blackwood, just how battles have you ran away from leaving your friends to die? not that it matters" Rea put her left leg forward and right leg back as she points her gun forward, "You won't be running away this time Esau."

"Well would look at that! the little man and his girlfriend have got jokes!" he snaps his fingers and suddenly all the men in the cars exit and line up behind him, they're armed with pistols and metal pipes and Esau himself reaches into his car and pulls out a large shotgun and points it at you, "You wouldn't mind doing your little comedy routine for all my boys would you?"

There are at-least 12 guys lined up behind him, 5 have pistols, 4 have pipes and the rest are going in empty-handed, this will be easy. The group of men smile and surround the both of you while Esau stands back and watches, "What's wrong Esau?" you shout, "Can't fight us without your goons softening us up first?"

"I could kick both your asses bare-handed but i want to play a game first." Esau walks over to his car and un-straps the office worker from his bindings as he drops to street and wakes up from the impact, "Owwww..." he groans it seems the pain from earlier torture knocked him out but he's wide awake now, he looks up to Esau and panics, but before he can run away however, Esau grabs him and drags him over to the back of the group.

He lifts him off his feet and holds him in the air ,"We caught this little weasel trying to rob us, can you believe it? he actually came in here despite all the rumors and tried to make a quick buck. but we're kind people here, instead of killing him we decided to escort him out of town before he caused anymore trouble, we took him on a little ride around town."

"I will admit, he pretty stupid to try steal from a gang of armed psychopaths, so how about you just give him up and we can all go without any problems, the two of us have places to be you know." you say, trying to possibly persuade him and save some time.

He puts him get on his knees and his hands behind his head, "Don't worry, the game is quick and simple." he points his shotgun at the back of the man's knee, "I'm gonna guys a time limit, add a little risk for your reward, i'll give you a whole minute to fight all of my boys, go over a minute, and the weasel loses a leg. the countdown starts from the moment the first punch is thrown." he says

You look to Rea and whisper, "Can you shoot away his gun out of his hand?"

"I think so, however i will need an opening."

looks like you'll have to make this quick, you need some way of clearing a hole in this circle without

>Rush in: You'll have to be fast, take-down as many as you can with in quick succession and clear a path.

>Attack from a distance: you have your bow with you, if you can just snipe that shotgun out of his hands.

You grin a little from the sheer ridiculousness of it all, you just can't help it, after you made that big speech about self-preservation and thinking about yourself first, here you are, about to jump headfirst into armed combat for some dumbass who tried to steal from guy with a shotgun.

At the very least, you can get nice headstone if you don't make out of this, it will read "Here lies Derrick, He was a really nice guy."

You look over to Rea and speak, "How good of a shot are you with that thing? i'm going to need you to cover me as i move in, take down anyone who tries to attack me from my blind spots, I'll clear a path to blackwood."

"I'm not confident enough in my marksmanship skills to say i won't hit you, are you sure you want to trust your back to me?"

You step forward and pull your combat gloves extra tight, "If you have time to doubt yourself, use it to line up your shots instead."

She smiles a little and takes aim,

"Understood."

>This won't be good...

There's a lot of guys here, so you decide to go after the guys guns with the guns first.

You gear up, you dig your foot into the ground and dash forward, you launch forward, you make it look like you were jumping straight in front of you but as soon as you get close to the guys with the pipe, you jump again and launch after the guys to the left.

You close in on the unprepared gunmen and knock one out with a straight jab to the face, your combat gloves increase the power of your punches greatly, so the guy you punch loses some teeth and get sent flying into a nearby shop window.

you try to follow up by throwing a big right swing to the guy beside you but he dodges your punch, causing you to whiff and nearly lose your balance, they notice your moment of weakness and one tries to shoot you.

But Rea quickly takes aim and hits the one trying to shoot you in the knee, knocking him to the ground and taking him out of commission. you take this opportunity to roll away back to the center.

That took ten seconds and you only managed to take out two people, this off to a bad start but it's not over yet!

There are six of of these bastards coming up on you, you expected them to rush in and crowd on you but thanks to that earlier exhibition of strength they've gotten scared and cautious.

you speak up, "What? all six of you guys vs
only one of me? that's down-right unfair." you say as you watch where their positions, "Sorry man! life ain't fair" as he says that, one guy comes at you bare-handed from the front, the second rushes you with a pipe from the left and a third comes in from behind.

"You're right, life isn't fair." the man in front of you comes in with a wide swing , "For you." as you say that you duck right his wide swing and grab his arm and pull it around to his back, you then turn him to the left which leads him right into the path of the pipe that was already in mid-swing, it breaks his face and knocks him out cold.

The man with pipe doesn't even have time to realize what he's done, as you deliver a brutal palm strike right to his face, causing him to let go of his pipe which you grab mid-fall. You use it's momentum to smack him and the third man, knocking both out.

The remaining three look on in terror at you're combat prowess, you waste no time in taking advantage of that as you dash in to deliver a vicious elbow strike to the abdomen of the one closet to you, all the air in his lungs get pushed out in the most painful way possible, knocking him unconscious.

That was four guys in just 5 seconds, as the remaining two members cower in fear, you look over to see how Rea is doing.

You look over to see Rea, she's locked in intense combat. There is very little cover on this narrow street, so Rea is forced to dodge every bullet by rolling out of the way.

The remaining three gunmen have created a firing line and never give Rea moment to think. however, it seems that Rea's combat analysis skills are also amazing, you see her roll perfectly out of the way of each bullet, she must be watching the exact instance they fire and estimating the landing point from the recoil, they only mange to graze her with one shot, however she has no chance to counterattack.

that is until two of the men have to take a moment to reload, leaving a massive opening for Rea to stop rolling for a second and shoot back.

She stops in front of a store window and jumps backwards as she shoots at the firing line and hits two gunmen, one in the abdomen and the other in the arm. her jump makes her smash through the window of the shop, giving her proper cover for her to fire from.

She way better then you thought, but she only took out one of the gunmen as the one she shot in the arm fights through the pain and continues trying to shoot at her.

This has become such a mess but you accomplished your goal, the way to Blackwood is clear now.

So you need to....

>Help out Rea: you are her bodyguard, she's stronger then she looks but she's in a real pinch at the moment but that might give Blackwood the chance to escape or kill the hostage.

>Finish the last two goons off: These two are practically useless on their owns, however you don't want one of them to hit you in the back while you're not looking.

>Rush Blackwood: There's no time to waste! if Blackwood goes down the rest will be easy.

>Help out Rea

You want to go after Blackwood and save that guy but if you turn your back on Rea and she ends up dead because you couldn’t protect her then you would never be able to forgive yourself, however you’re running out of time, if you had to guess, you got about 40 seconds left before Blackwood pulls the trigger. If you you’re gonna do this, you’ll need to be quick and concise; any time wasted from mistakes will cost you dearly.

They keep shooting into the building that Rea is taking cover in, for some reason Rea doesn’t retaliate, is she out of ammo? Or is she waiting them to run out of ammo? You could try and guess the reasons why she isn’t taking action but that would be a waste of time. Instead you need to find out a way to take them both out without getting shot in the process. You have the element of surprise on them (+5 to next roll)

How will attack the gunmen?

>Head-on rush: Work with what you’re best with, if you can close in on them with them noticing then you can take both of them out in one quick movement and get back to the objective, still if they notice you it wouldn’t be fun getting shot….

>Snipe with your bow: This is the perfect time to use your bow and take them out from a safe distance, they probably can’t shoot you from here but it will take longer for you to take them both down and you don’t know if you can make that time….

>HEAD-ON ASSAULT

You may be a pretty skilled fighter but you are certainly not invincible, a bullet to the brain will still put you in the ground so you’ll have to close as much distance as possible in one step so that they have no chance to counter, you’re about 30 meters away, you can do this.

You fasten your gloves tight and dig your heels to the asphalt as you launch off in one strong jump, you close the distance in under a second and land right beside one of the gunmen as you land a brutal strike right on in his left temple, the force of the impact sends him flying into his friend knocking both to the ground., you dash over and curb stomp them both on the ground them both out of commission.

That took you 4 seconds, you still have plenty of time but now two goons and Blackwood himself remain, he continues to watch your fight without moving and looking rather entertained by the entire spectacle. That's strange, is he really not going to do anything? No cheating or using the hostage against you? he only has two unarmed men left yet his confidence hasn't gone down at all.

Rea jumps from the store and moves to your side, "Thanks for the help but it would have been better if you went after Blackwood." she says as she looks over to Blackwood whistle some catchy song to himself, you respond, "And leave you high and dry with those gun-toting losers? unless you had some sort of secret plan to defeat them, then you shouldn't be complaining. Instead how about you help me kick these guys asses."

"We don't have much time left so we must act fast but Derrick, i have a feeling that we are being played." she says as glares at Blackwood.

"Yeah." you respond, "I have that feeling too, he's too calm for someone with little to no fighting power left, not to mention there are way too little people here, i remember some reports telling that the Blackwood gang had at-least 40 people in it and yet there are only 12 here."

"Exactly. But we don't have time to be discussing possible plans while our time runs short. So just in case...." Rea grabs your collar, pulls you close and turns you away from the remaining enemies, you're surprised by her impressive strength and almost blush from how close her face is to yours, she slips something into your shirt and speaks quietly, "If something happens, just pull this out and i believe we will have a chance."

You feel the shape now tucked in your shirt and realize what's shes saying you, you nod and turn back to face your enemies.

Blackwood speaks up, "We've finally hit the 30 second mark, it seems you two weren't clowns after-all, it ain't no joke you beat down 10 men and i must take back some of my earlier statements, you two aren't suicidal at all, you got bite to back up your bark." he says as he plays with the shotgun in his hand, nearly shooting the hostage.

he continues, "But i'm just gonna say this now, if you think you can screw with the "Blackwood" gang and walk away alive and happy..." he puts his shotgun behind his head and grins, "You're wrong. Dead wrong."

What a blatant display of confidence, he isn't even aiming at the hostage anymore. He definitely has something up his sleeve, he wants you to attack him, the other two goons are have recovered from their fear and are staying near Blackwood but refuse to move up because of caution, it would be easy to take them down and move in on Blackwood but there has to be some sort of trick going on here....

You take a few seconds to think, you look over to Blackwood and his goons, you look at where the're standing and wonder why they are standing there. Blackwood moved over there before the fight even began and hasn't changed location since, now his goons are standing there and aren't moving either, you thought it was because they were scared of you, but now...

the realization hits you like a lighting bolt, you freeze up and look over to the buildings on both sides of you. barring the few small coffee shops, there are tall offices with windows looking down on the streets at almost every angle.

You didn't think about it earlier since everything happened so fast but you heard that the Blackwood gang had grown in size over the last few years and yet there's only 12 of them and their boss here? That makes no sense.

You've finally figured it out, the reason behind his confidence and why he thinks you've been cornered. it's because... "We're surrounded" Rea says, finishing your thought.

"Yep" you say agreeing with her, "These buildings provide the perfect cover to set-up an ambush and shoot down at people who have no where to run, they probably have men in all of these buildings around us." you say as a drop of sweat runs down your face, Rea continues, "we saw no guards or signs at the entrance of this street despite it being a renown gang hideout, we walked through unabated and saw no activity despite the large size of the group we are dealing with. not to mention this is quite a large area with many ways to go through it and yet the entire group just so happens to come driving down the street we were walking on? these events are far too convenient."

"It's just like you said Rea, they had been watching us from a distance this whole time and waited until we reached a good point to surround us on all sides and kill us when we least expected it, which means Blackwood has been playing us this entire time." you feel your blood begin to boil, you can't believe you played into this scum's game for so long!

"Calm down Derrick, now that we know, we need to find a way to take-down Blackwood and recuse the hostage. This is a very careful situation, i think it would be best if we just found a way to escape this area and separate Blackwood from his hostage but i will take your input, what should we do?"

Shit just gets worse and worse doesn't it. now you're surrounded on all sides by enemies and have a find a way to survive while also saving the idiot over there.

What can you do...

>Seek and destroy: Rush at Blackwood to test where these hidden enemies are destroy them before Blackwood has a chance to do anything.

>Separate and annihilate: One of you will go after the hidden enemies while the other takes down Blackwood and his goons.

>Use that 'thing': that 'thing' might allow you to be able to take down both Blackwood and recuse the hostage while also avoiding the hidden enemies, it will be risky to pull off but it will also be worth it!

>You vs Blackwood, Rea vs the Hidden

You don't know how many people are around you but their probably all armed with pistols and rifles and waiting for you to make a stupid move, however they won't move until Blackwood give the order, that's where you have a chance. In that case, "Rea, i'm going to go after Blackwood and get him away from that hostage, that means you'll have to deal with the sneaky bastards all around us, can i trust you to handle that?" you ask her, worried for her safety, she meets your eyes with a look of resolve, "I didn't come here unprepared to fight Derrick, i can work with that plan, however how will you approach him without him attacking the hostage?"

"I actually have an idea for that." you tap your chest, where Rea slipped that object in your shirt, "I'll be making good use of it." Rea gives you a small look of amusement, "Maybe Blackwood was right about one thing Derrick, i think you might be a little suicidal."

"Hey! you done chatting over there!" Blackwood shouts at you, "There's only 15 seconds left on the clock! if you don't move quick your friend here is gonna give the street a brand new paint job with his Brain matter!" he's getting impatient over there, but it's no matter.

After all, you already have a plan in mind...

>Rush in and take him out: If you can knock that gun out of his hand and get him out of the street then there will be no problems.

>Snipe him with your bow: He standing perfectly still there, if you can get a little closer you can probably tag him with a few arrows.

>Trick him and sneak attack him: You have a little trick up your sleeve and you feel it's time to show him what it really means to get played.

"Get ready to shoot anyone who pops out or shoots at me. Got it Rea?" you say while you adjust your bow into place, "You needn't worry about me missing, just make sure you don't screw up, if you miss, he's sure to kill the hostage."

"Boy, do i love high-stake games." you say with a wry grin on your face. You then proceed to slowly walk over to Blackwood and his goons, tying to get the right distance to able to hit him with an arrow without him dodging it.

"The Hell? you scared now little man!? you got just 10 seconds left before all your efforts become meaningless." he trying to pressure you into panicking, you can't let get to you. You continue to slowly walk forward until you get the right distance, "Alright then, I'll just count you down, since you don't seem to give a shit about this guy anymore, 10.... 9....8...." he begins to count down your remaining seconds to really start putting the pressure on you.

"7..." you can't miss this shot,

"6..." but you can't rush it either,

"3.." You're about 50 meters away, if you want a clear shot you'll need to be about 30 meters away but you don't have that kind of time, "2.." you can't make that distance even if you were to dash, so it's now or never!

You jump forward and try and close as much distance as you can, you pull out an arrow and notch it in your bow and get ready to fire. You focus and Blackwood's head and see him grin as he begins to pull the trigger, you know you can end him if you let the arrow loose at his head but that guarantees that hostage is going to die so you try and adjust to aim at his shotgun but by the time you've adjusted, you hear the sound of a gun being fired and see blood flying in the air.

You close your eyes mid-dash and take second to absorb your failure. All of that fighting to save that idiot and this is how it ends? You failed save yet another life you could have if you just tried a little harder, moved a little faster, even after all the promises and training, are you still so weak that you can't protect anything?

As you wallow in self-pity, a shout brings you back to reality, "DERRICK!" That was Rea's voice, it was the loudest you've ever head it but you're sure that was her, you open your eyes and look at the scene before and you can't believe your eyes, you see Blackwood's shotgun go flying as a bullet enters his right hand and the hostage jumping away from his shot, alive and still grasping desperately to life.

You don't even think as you let loose an arrow and hit Blackwood's shoulder causing him to recoil back as you dash faster then you ever have in your life and deliver a second arrow into his abdomen making him fall over unto the road.

You finally stop moving after you dash past the hostage and look behind you to see the smoke dissipating from Rea's pistol, you smile harder then you ever have in your entire life.
>>
You quickly look around as you see the hostage crawl away on his knees for safety, you'll have to come for him later but for now he's as safe as he's gonna get. So now you no longer have anything holding you back, you look on both sides of you to see the two goons that Blackwood had on his side cowering in fear of you and running away before you can do anything.

You let your guard for a second as you turn your back to watch the two goons run away, that's when you hear the sound of two guns firing and suddenly the two men drop dead unto the road, blood sipping into the cracks of the road.

This surprises you enough that you don't even notice as someone who was supposed be dead on the floor gets up and grabs your throat from behind and easily lifts you in the air.

"Don't think you've won, you little worm!" you grab at his fist but your hand slips off from the blood, you can see him bleeding from the two spots you hit him. What beast-like endurance! "You messed with the wrong man today, you think a few pricks will kill me? I will admit though, your ladyfriend got me good and those arrows really hurt." he tightens his grip around your neck, "That's why i'm going to make sure you suffer for messing with me, you little shit!" you look over to Rea to see if she can shoot him again but she is being shot at by the hidden enemies from above, "Sorry man, no one to save you this time."

Oh come the hell on, you did not see your day going this way a few hours ago. You feel the life leaving you as he chokes you out, you're going to die at this rate!

You can feel the strength in his grip, there's no way you can overpower him in your current state, you dig at his hands as he chokes you until you touch the hole that Rea left in his hands. You then burrow your thumb into the hole as hard and deep as you can causing Blackwood to loosen his grip enough for you to kick in him right in his face, freeing you from his grasps.

You land on the ground gasping for air and fighting to stand up, you manage to get up on your feet but Blackwood gets up even quicker, he doesn't even let you recover as he charges you and picks you up, he then uses his momentum to throw you through the window of a nearby shop. You feel the sharp stab of glass in your back, but you fight through the pain and get up before Blackwood can attack you again.

that huge bastard never goes down for good does he, you look at the shop you were thrown in for a second, it's an old yet stylish coffee shop. It has surprisingly clean, classic wooden tables and booths that were once used to serve busy workmen before they headed to their jobs but by this point, they're no more then more weapons to bash Blackwood's head in with to you.

Speaking of which, you look outside the window to see Blackwood reaching for something in his utility vest, he pulls out a green object with- HOLY SHIT THAT'S A GRENADE.

what will you do?

Don't panic, he's trying to corner in this place and kill you, rather the back away, you pull out and arrow and notch your bow, you ready yourself for the moment he moves his hand and wait.

he cooks the grenade a little and then finally unpins the grenade, The second you hear the sound of the pin leaving the trigger, you let your arrow fly out to meet Blackwood's grenade as it flies, it hits the grenade in mid-air and sends it right back to sender. The arrow pierces the ground right next to Blackwood, he looks over to see the live grenade right next to his feet and looks over to you, only to be met with your smug mug as he realized how screwed he is. He attempts to roll away, however he moves a moment too late as ear-deafening, fiery explosion engulfs him and covers the area in Black smoke.

You cough as you fan away a lot of the smoke that floods into the shop, you wait for the smoke to clear as you approach the window to see Blackwood's body, the bastard is built like stupidly muscular tank, but he's still human, there's no way he survived a direct hit with a grenade.

*CHIC-CHIC*, Oh you have to be joking.
>>
You jump backwards to narrowly avoid a hail of shotgun as it pours through the store window, you get in a crouch position as the smoke clears to show a blood eviscerated Blackwood. His legs have been burned to the bone and his body is battered and beaten, yet he still holds his shotgun steady as he aims at you, ready to fire another shot.

Is he immortal or something? this guy ran away from the battlefield? what kind of monsters lurk out in the War-zone that a guy who shrugs off grenade blasts is pushed to deserting? you almost wish you could question him but you can hear him gearing up to fire another round.

You duck quickly under another shot as you dash deeper into the store, tables get blown apart and thrown across the room from the shotgun blasts, bullets pierce and embed themselves in the walls into the wall, he keeps on firing at random into the shop in the hopes of hitting you at least once.

He may be standing steady but the damage has clearly affected him, he's desperate to end this fight already. Good, the feeling's mutual bastard.

You dodge about six shots before you finally see an escape, there's a staircase leading upstairs and dash towards them. He fires at you as you stand up to run up the stairs, you roll to dodge but you feel a stray bullet hit your ankle.

You roll onto the staircase and run up it, fighting through the intense burning pain.

You run up the stairs and make to the second floor and the examine your surroundings. The second floor has a couple of doors on the walls, two of them on your right look like they lead to the bathrooms, one male, one female,. Other then that you see a another staircase that looks like it leads to an attic of some kind, then their's a bunch of bedrooms with a variety names imprinted unto the door, you doubt there's anything useful in there.

"I'm getting real tired of your bullshit Blondie. I can't believe a half-pint like you drove me into a corner like this." Blackwood's voice rings out from below, sounds like he just entered the store, as it is now he's going to come up-stairs and Blast you into next week, you'll have to go somewhere more open or where you can trap him...

Where will you go?

>Into the bathroom: You can hide in there and ambush the big bastard him but if that fails then you'll have nowhere else to go.

You move over to the small set of stairs in-front of you and begin to climb them, you hear Blackwood ranting and raving below, "You know, you probably think i'm some kind of coward, that i ran away from the battlefield because i couldn't take all the gunfire and explosions. That's wrong." you enter the attic as he continues to make excuses.

"I grew up in the Untied States of Saherta, my family was poor and complacent but i different, I wasn't going to rot away on the streets like some loser. So i joined USS military and fought campaign after campaign for 10 yrs, The pay wasn't worth my time so I left. I needed somewhere I could really make some cash for my skills. so I decided to join a mercenary company that worked international contracts that was famous for being the best of the best. We fought our way hell and back, we toppled governments and killed corrupt politicians for cash. Believe it or not i had a sense of honor back in the day, we didn't kill the innocent and while we may have killed anyone that we were paid to, we never killed unnecessarily. Our captain died a year after i joined and i replaced him since i was the most skilled and well-liked of the company, it seemed like my life was finally reaching somewhere i could be happy with but that didn't last. It was soon after i took my spot as captain that we got a job in a place I'd never heard of, somewhere called Brenho, some obscure island country off the shore of the Federation of Ochima." The hell is he even talking about? why is he telling you his life-story all sudden? you barely listen to whatever garbage he's spewing as you look around the attic.

It's a packed to brim with old nick-knacks and mementos, you see a picture of an old man and a young girl posing in front of the store, the photo is dusty and shows the wear and tear of age, this must of been the store owner and his daughter before this place turned to abandoned hellhole, they're probably six feet under by how old this photo is, great. Your in a place filled with mementos of the dead, if you screw up, you'll be joining them. You toss away such depressing thoughts and look around the room, you see a set of spiral stairs leading up to the roof, you have another way out if need be.

So now what do you do?

>MacGyver can eat his heart out

You move to the center of the room as examine anything even remotely of note, you don't see anything useful at first glance, the only things that stuck out were the bookshelf filled with classic novels and a few old comics and a solid-looking table with a few small dusty boxes scattered underneath it. You were thinking of using them to block the way up to the Attic but that would be pointless as Blackwood could just blast his way through. You need something that can deal some real damage and surprise the big bastard...

You look over at the photo of the old man and the cute daughter again, a memory springs up in your mind and idea comes to all at once, you walk around the room putting pressure on the floor, you approach the window as you feel a deep depression in the floorboards underneath it. You pull the board up and find a small metal box with a revolver in it, exactly what you were looking for. When you looked at the photo, you remembered that you looked up the history of Barry's street and what is like before it was abandoned, it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now but it wasn't a good neighborhood either. As a resident of Yorknew city, you know a shipowner values two things above all else: 1. Their property and 2. Their family. With that in mind, it's only natural the nice-looking old man in the photo was hiding a gun somewhere around this place.

The revolver is a classic Colt Python with a clean white paint with about 4 bullets in the cylinder, perfect. You look around the room as you see some brown rope and a large nail with a solid looking hammer in the corner. You smile as you begin to formulate a plan.
(Continued)

You begin your DIY trap-making by moving to the center of the room. You take the large nail and hammer it deep into the floor and hide it with the boxes from under the table. You then take your rope and tie it tight around the nail as you move it to the bookcase where you take out the revolver and carefully tie the other end of the rope around the trigger and adjust the cylinder to a loaded chamber and prop it up on the lowest bookshelf and cover with the larger books on the shelves, you pull the rope a little and see the trigger move.

With that, your DIY wire-trap is complete, now you need to set-up the ambush properly you rush over stairs leading into the Attic and begin to bring them up, as you do so, you catch more of Blackwood's monologue, "It was supposed to be easy job, go in and take down this monarchy that's been annexing near by lands and taking armies to destroy them. they had killed many innocent people and had become a real threat to the Federation despite their small size. We snuck in by boat where we thought we wouldn't be discovered and yet as soon as we landed on shore, there he was, just one guy standing in a friggin business suit and smoking a cigarette right in-front of a group of armed mercenaries, he told us to walk away or die. We took him for a joke and just shot him but then the strangest thing happened. we shot right at him but all our bullets just seemed to bounce off before they hit him, like he had some kind of force-field. we fired and fired yet not even one shot him, then he just flicked his hand and two of my men were ripped into bloody shreds. " the hell? now you know he's making stuff up, that sounds like something that would happen in a really screwed up cartoon, you pull up the staircase as you hear him ascend the stairs, you can still hear his voice through the floor, "All of my men, ripped apart one by one, I had friends I loved among them, I fought alongside them to survive, I know they weren't weak so I couldn't comprehend what was happening. I thought that strange man was like an angel of death with the fluid movements he made as he cleaved my men to pieces. In the end i fled from that monster and left my men behind to die, i landed here and decided that i would try and build up my own little army to try and take on that bastard again but you and your girlfriend came in and ruined that!"

If you want vengeance for your friends, don't drag innocent people into your suffering, whether his story is true or not, there's no way in hell this is a justified way to avenge his unit, he's lost his damn mind. You think this as you climb unto the bars holding up the roof and ready your bow for the ambush.

You crouch and fit into the small space between the bars and notch your bow with another arrow, you hold perfectly steady as you slow your breathing and wait.

You hear Blackwood's voice from the floor below as he searches for you, "You're probably wondering why i'm even telling you all this, to be honest, despite all this fighting, i actually like you. This is the most fulfilling fight I've ever been in, after my failure in Brenho, I lost all meaning in my life, I devoted the rest of life to getting vengeance, i didn't care for anyone or anything, even myself. From the moment I left my unit behind, I already knew there was no redeeming myself and so i threw away my morals, values and future to destroy the monster that destroyed me."

You feel a spike of anger at his words, he tortures and kills innocent, un-involved people to satisfy his vengeance. Scum like this dig at you the hardest. You have no sympathy for this garbage, you calm yourself and continue to wait for him to come up.

You hear him kick down the door to the bathroom and continues his senseless rambling, "I've been dead for a long time but fighting you has made me feel alive again. You have the fire of life in your eyes, you fight to defend yourself and your friends and you never seem to give up despite all the hell you go through, your the kind of man who would jump in front of a speeding train for the future of yourself and others." What is it with you and appealing to psychopaths? you're beginning to see a bad pattern here. You hear his boots on the floor as he walks over to the staircase and stops, you spend a tense minute before you hear him speak again, "That's real admirable kid. But as someone who tried to pave his way in life too, allow me to part some wisdom." he blast the staircase down with a shotgun shot and climbs into the Attic, "If you keep trying to play hero, you're gonna end up dead before you know it."

(Continued)
>>
He walks in and looks around for you, you see him stepping carefully and tense up when he looks around, but he doesn't notice you and moves about step by step, deeper into the Attic and closer to the trap. You won't be able to pull this off if you tense up and reveal yourself, if you don't pull this off you're dead for sure!

With that in mind, you try harder then ever before to make yourself unnoticeable, you calm your breathing and close your eyes and feel a strange feeling envelope you. You've hidden yourself before, but this time feels different, you almost feel like your physically disappearing, you don't become invisible but you presence is much weaker, like your fading into the shadow, you maintain this feeling and you don't feel tense anymore. You open your eyes and wait, feeling a lot more secure then you did a little earlier.

>New skill:????
>You have no idea how it works but you now know how to hide yourself much more effectively then before. (+10 to stealth rolls whenever this skill is used)

You wait until Blackwood reaches the center of the room, he only three steps from triggering the trap, you quietly stretch your bow-strings a little to ensure you don't misfire. He walks slowly, step by agonizing step until he stands in-front of the trap. He stops for a bit and you worry that he might have realized the trick but that worry disappears as he steps forward again, he steps on the rope which pulls the trigger, the bullet flies and lands in his already ruined legs, as he looks down to examine his wounds you swing down and balance yourself on the bar with your feet as you launch an arrow and it pierces his throat before he even has a chance to retaliate.

Gotcha bastard! you watch as the giant falls to the Attic floor and lands with a loud thud. You wait a moment to see if he gets up again and when you see no response, you hop down and examine his corpse.

You look at the various wounds he survived in battle, he has severe burns on both his legs and is bleeding from the puncture wounds all over his body from all the arrows you shot in him earlier, it took a small military arsenal to kill this bastard and your glad this dumb bullshit is over, you reach down and pull the arrow out of throat.

Now what do you do?

>Go down and help Rea: You still got a little adrenaline left in your blood, you sure Rea will need a little assistance considering how many guys were shooting at her.

>Ensure Blackwood's Death: You know you just put an arrow in his throat but you never know, the bastard might just survive that plus you kinda want to get revenge for all the glass in your back.

>Patch yourself up: There has to be medical supplies in this place, you need to make sure you don't die first before anything else.

You take one more look at Blackwood's corpse and examine his face, his glasses have fallen off to reveal distant, dilated, brown eyes. Those are the eyes of a dead man, you have nothing to worry about. You walk back over to the window out-looking to the street to see how the situation with Rea is going.

You wonder why it is that you don't hear any gun-fire as you approach the window, has Rea already finished her fight? or is she.... No! you think to yourself, have a little faith, you're sure she's fine, you swallow a lump in your throat as you look out the window and see something unbelievable.

What you see isn't Rea in a fire-fight or Rea's bleeding corpse, but the corpses of 30 men lying dead on the floor, most of which were killed using regular gunfire however the others are in a state that can't be described as human, dead or alive. Seeing this much death disturbs you on an instinctual level but the real horrors are the few dead bodies (if you can even call them that) that weren't shot. Their bodies have been mangled and twisted to the point where they look more like rolled up raw meat then people.

You look in absolute horror at the pile of bodies Rea left in her wake, she seemed like an average fighter so this doesn't make any sense to you. You look around to find her in the streets but you see nothing, she's nowhere in sight.

Confusion and panic set in as you dash out of the shop and look at the street, you don't see her anywhere not in any of the buildings nor anywhere on the street, "REA!!" you shout but hear nothing in return.

What the hell? what's going on? did Rea kill all these guys? Where the hell did she go? How did she mangle those other guys so bad? A thousand questions rush to your mind as you try to understand what transpired in your absence.

>TIME TO PANIC

You try to calm down and investigate the situation, you head down the street and follow the bodies but all you can see are even more corpses, some hanging out of buildings and others thrown through them. The Blackwood gang had around 60 members and from counting it up, it seems Rea somehow single-handedly destroyed them all. The Rea who said she needed a bodyguard to survive the hunter exam did this much damage on her own? you figured she had some way of defending herself but whatever she's packing is more powerful then anything you've ever seen. Could this be the secret weapon she told you about? You made a joke about it being some kind of giant energy cannon but you doubt even an energy cannon could do all this damage.

As you wander down the street, dumbfounded by the sheer destruction and death, you hear a noise come from a nearby building,it sounds like crying and groaning. You look over and see it's a department store with a giant hole in it's wall, you enter the building through it and step over a few corpses scattered about the floor as you approach the far side of the store where the noise is coming from and see none other then Blackwood's hostage, hunched over in the corner covering his head and eyes as he cries to himself.

You walk over to him slowly and tap to get him to notice your presence, as you touch him he screams and dodges away from you with his eyes still closed, "YOU FREAK, YOU MONSTER, GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME, I DON"T WANT TO DIE!" it seems he's a bit delirious, not surprising he's a little mentally disturbed from all these corpses in here, you are as well after all.

But you need to calm him down if you want to ask him anything or carry him out of here.

The man waddles away on his hands and knees, so you have no fear of him getting away as you walk over to him and grab him by the shoulder and speak, "Did you know that the song "Ice Ice baby" borrowed a bassline from the queen song "Under pressure" and never gave them credit until after the song became a hit?" you say a random rock song fact and watch his reaction, "I DON"T WANNA DIE, PLEASE DON- Wait what? really?" he calms down once he thinks about what you said little,

"Queen really was the best of the best right? Even Vanilla Ice had to steal some of their greatness to make it big."

"What really? i never noticed before... wait why are you talking about random rock facts with this mess going on!"

"It calmed you down right? It was a trick my mom taught me, whenever one of my brothers panicked she would sprout a random health fact and they would always get confused thinking about it so they would stop panicking because they would be too dumbfounded by the randomness of it."

"That's stupid."

"But it works."

He's about to retort but then he realizes he can't really say your wrong when he's clearly calmed down now. The man sits down and sighs to himself, "This is the worst, i can't believe walked into this insanity, i'll be in therapy for the rest of my for this crap...."

You have a chance to finally speak to him, you have a bit of time and he can probably give you some much needed answers.

What will you ask?

>What's your name: First things first, maybe you should get the name of the guy you went through all this trouble for.

>What happened here: You need to understand what the hell happened here, you might even get some info on Rea's whereabouts.

"Okay." you start, "Clearly we both have a lot of questions that need answering. So how about we get the most obvious one out of the way." you remove your combat gloves and reach out your hands, "My name's Derrick. Derrick Holums. What's yours?" you speak softer then usually do and wait for a hand shake, the man stares at your hand for a moment before firmly grasping back, "My name is Johnnie Darby, nice to meet you." he cracks a small smile as he seems to recover fully this time.

You sit crouch down in front of him and begin speaking, " Okay Johnnie, tell me everything that happened here, why is this place such a mess, who killed all these people?" you don't beat around the bush and jump right into the real questions, Johnnie holds his head as he begins to breathe heavily before sighing again, "It was absolutely terrible, i could believe my eyes, people dying left and right, some being shot, the others ripped apart or thrown through buildings and all of it was done by that monster..." there he goes using that word again, what does he even mean by that?

You decide to press him on it, "A monster? what kind of monster?"

"That's the thing, i couldn't see it but i could see what it was doing, hear it's shouts and shrieks as it tore everyone around it to pieces, it came out a little after you saved me and i could do nothing but watch and run away from that monster's rampage, that's how i ended up here." An invisible monster? you disregard whatever that is and ask another question.

"Did you see a woman in a business suit, roughly 20-ish and carries around a dinky little pistol?"

"Business suit? Oh! you mean the one who controlled it!"

"What? controlled it? do you mean the monster?"

"Yes! she seemed to be able to control, she shouted commands at it and attacked whoever she directed it at, you want to know where she is? Do you have some kind of death wish?"

What??? By this point your half-sure that he's either gone crazy or the injuries have made him delirious but with all the strange bloody bodies scattered about, you begin to think his explanation isn't completely out of the realm of reality. But if that's really true, then Rea can control invisible monsters and slaughter entire towns in the 30 minutes you took to fight Blackwood? That's one hell of a secret weapon, you'll need more info then this, "Don't worry about me. just tell me where she went after everything ended."

"The hell if i know man, do you earnestly think i was thinking straight when something straight when i saw something like that. why are you going after her anyway?"

"She's a friend."

"You have some interesting friends if some of them can control invisible monsters."

You were about to tell him off but then you realize you didn't really know anything about Rea in the first place, she seemed to get along with you but you told her so much about yourself and yet she told you nothing about herself. Maybe you were the only one who thought you had become friends.

You feel a little betrayed as you only now realized that you may have been too friendly to her. You thought you knew better then this. You clench your fist tight and give Johnnie a serious look, "You swear you're telling the truth." he looks a little scared but he quickly answers your question, "A-Absolutely! I wouldn't lie to the person that saved me!"

You look of seriousness falters and turns to regret as you contemplate what do next.

What now?

>Keep asking questions: You still don't know why he was here in the first place, you should at-least get that out of him before you leave.

You decide to save as much time as possible by getting up and gesturing for the man to move with you, he gives a rather disappointed look as if you've made some kind of mistake. You look to the soles of the man's feet and remember the reason why he's been crawling on his hands and knees this whole time, the flesh on his feet has been lacerated and burnt and there's no way he's walking in his current state.

You sigh as you lean down and move your arm underneath his legs and lift him up onto to your back. You walk out of the store and begin to head towards the Moonlight Forest, "Where are you taking me?" he asks while resting on your back, "There's a main road ahead, i'll call you a taxi or something and you can get on your way home, speaking of which, why did you come here in the first place, don't tell me you got lost or something."

"You heard what Blackwood told you right. I tried to rob him, i knew he had money stashed away somewhere in this place but they found me before i could steal it and used me as a punching bag for a few days before they tried to make me into a hood ornament."

"Why the hell did you steal from one of the most dangerous gangs in the city? is your pay that bad?"

"Yes and no."

"What?"

"If i was living on my own, then it would be plenty but i got myself a wife and she's got a bun in the oven. There was no one in hell being an office drone could ever make enough money to support a family but there's also no way i could find another job with my skills. So i made a real dumb decision, i decided i would rob the richest gang in town and run away with my family somewhere nice. Like something straight out of the movies you know? But reality ain't so nice."

You stop for a second and look back at Johnnie, "What?" he says, you look in-front of you again and keep walking, "You're right, that is really stupid, if you have a family don't go throwing away your life like that you dumbass."

"You're starting to sound like my wife."

"You better get used to being called an idiot if you try and pull dumb shit like this again."

"Jeez man, i get it. We only just met but you've already called me a dumbass, I really know how to live my life huh?"

Memories once again coming rushing back to you, of friends and enemies long dead and gone. You look ahead to the road as you think of Rea, is she an ally or an enemy? even after being abandoned by her you can't tell.

But there's one thing you know for sure now. You look back one more time to the corpses behind you, there mangled and broken form makes you cringe each time you see it. The world seems to be filled with secrets and, like it or not, your going to uncover them in your quest to become a hunter.

Ah man, you wish you stayed back in the bar......

Was the combat good in this chapter, i am trying to make it fair yet challenging to ensure enjoyment but i'm unsure if i made enemies too tough or too weak, as always criticism is appreciated.

Leave anyone questions and i'll try to answer them before i archive the thread.

I don't really have any questions that need immediate answers.

I guess if I had to ask something it would be "how long do you expect the exam to last and do you have any backups in case we fail?"
