Inspired by No One In Particular.

Naruto Quests have a tendency to spawn edgy prodigies, don't they?

Not this one.

I'm going for something a little lower power. We'll be playing as one of the civilian genin. No clan techniques. No special deus ex machina powers. Just a normal kid trying to become a Ninja.

However, I won't railroad this. If the votes lean the way of edge, I'm going to let it happen.

---

What's our characters name and gender? (The other votes will probably be our teammates.)

Male

Kaku Noritomo

also
>have a tendency to spawn edgy prodigies,

depends IMO. Like I don't see Takeshi from BOruto quest as edgy, but I do see that in wargle's stuff of FNQ. Jonin quest MC is an asshole, but ahs good reason to be and isn't all that edgy. It's ultimately up to presentation and tone.
>>
>>1867937
I enjoy NOIPs quest. There are two blatant sides trying to pull MC into two different directions and it's lowkey getting annoying.

I've been really enjoying NOIP's stuff, so hopefully this'll be pretty good too, OP.

Kaku Noritomo

Okina Keikaku

These are the three so far. I'll give it about.. ten or so minutes and generate some shit for them. We'll pick which one we want our MC to be after I make some skill sheets for them.

Nisha Masanoma
>>
>>1867960
Jurou Nishihara

Casting a vote for this guy but i may reconsider
>>
>>1867947
I do too
But Kirai being edgy would be a stretch, so would "Prodigy."
While Tsuki, Kon and possibly the FNQ protagonist could be called naturally talented prodigies, Kirai and Takeshi are most certain not. They don't have an innate bloodline or super special unique clan jutsu. They just work their asses off super hard, and in Kirai's case Gai still beats the pants off him.

Likewise Kon and Takeshi are not edgy by any stretch. They're both cheerful kind hearted guys. Kirai is an asshole, but he's not angsty and there is a reason for hiss assholishness.

Then again you can make people not be edgy by setting the tone and writing well, even when they really should be.

Jurou Nishihara had finally made it. All those days of studying, and classwork had finally paid off. He was a genin, and was moments away from being assigned to his jounin instructor. He took a moment to look around at his classmates. There were a lot of clan kids this cycle. The Hyuuga girl, that weird bug kid, Kiba and Akamaru, fucking Sasuke, and the others. Jurou didn't have any sort of love for most of the clan kids, save for Choji and Shikamaru.

In reality, he envied them. They had these special clan techniques that would fast track them into becoming jounin at some point. He was just a normal kid. No special techniques. Just what he could achieve on his own.

The genin slowly split up into their teams, jounin leaders taking their new trainees away for whatever it was they did.

It wasn't long before he met his team.

Kaku Noritomo. His best friend. They were neighbors, and grew up together. Got in trouble together. Kaku was a strong kid. They'd gotten into a few scraps with other kids and Kaku always had Jurou's back. He was pretty good at taijutsu, all things considered. But his specialty was more street fighting than taijutsu.

Nisha Masanoma. A kunoichi. Jurou didn't really pay attention to her all that much. She was quiet. Not quiet in the Hinata way. Quiet in the Sasuke way. All things considered, she scared Jurou a little bit. She had no trouble with her school work, and passed the genin exam on her first try. Jurou had maybe said four words to her the entire time they had been in the Academy together.

And then their leader. Hayate Gekko.

Jurou was excited that Hayate was selected as their leader. He didn't have any special abilities. He was just a really good swordsman, and really intelligent. Jurou had looked up to Hayate as a youth, but didn't really know all that much about him.

Hayate had asked them to assemble in Training Yard 11.

>Get there early. First impressions are good impressions.

>>
>>1867974

I wouldn't call Tsuki edgy.
>>
>>1868119
She, and most MCs from Naruto quests do tend to be pretty special and snowflakey, which while fitting with the setting, is what I think OP meant by edgy.

It'll be a nice change of pace to get a simple normal ninja MC.
>>
>>1868116
>>1868119
I know who writes tsuki and she could be called edgy given she was a designer baby by orochimaru that killed her mom in childbirth to be a super ninja with her own super special unique release and is being courted by two courts of entities either one of which might cause the ruin of the world. Wargle however, writes well enough those issues are mostly negated.

It's best to get there early, honestly. Hayate is Jurou's hero after all, it's best not to disappoint.

It takes a few minutes to make his way to the training ground, and he meets up with Kaku along the way.

"Excited, Jurou?" Kaku asks as the two skip along rooftops, and through the streets. The people in the streets look more than a little annoyed when the two friends accidentally smash through a melon cart, but they're genin now. They just keep on moving towards the training ground.

"You bet I am. I can't wait to get some real training in!" Jurou responds, a wide smile on his face.

They arrive at the training ground, and see Nisha is already present. It seems she made it here without incident. The girl is busy staring at a leaf on the ground, watching it fly back and forth. If she's noticed that the two friends are there, she doesn't show it.

"Uh.. You okay over there?" Kaku asks, walking over to her. She gives a barely perceptible nod, and continues staring at the leaf. Kaku kneels down beside her, and Jurou takes the other side. All three are now staring at the leaf.

The team does this for a while, before they hear a light cough behind them. Hayate stands behind them, dark circles under his eyes. He looks a little young to be a jounin by Jurou's standards, but he doesn't complain. He has what appears to be a long wooden training sword on his back.

"Sensei, you are here." Nisha turns to him, her voice monotone. Kaku stands, crossing his arms, sizing up the instructor with his eyes.

"Well then. It seems that I'll be your jounin instructor. I've got things to do, so I'll make this quick. Only nine candidates are going to become genin. The rest are going back to the academy. Each team is going to be put through a test in order to see if they are ready. I'll be taking a note from Kakashi's book. The bell test."

Jurou curses to himself. The damn bell test. Every genin had heard about the bell test. How Kakashi had never passed a genin team. This was it. He was going back to the academy.

Kaku and Nisha have similar reactions, groaning under their breath and shifting their stance in annoyance.

"Well, it seems you already know about the test. So I'll just do a quick once-over on the rules. Grab the bells by noon, and you can eat. Only two bells. One of you is being tied to the log, and failing the test." He coughs again, with a small smirk on his face.

"Everyone understand?"

The team nods.

"Good. We'll begin when I say go."

>Fuck that. Rush him, take him surprise.

"Go."

>Get into a stealthy position, and wait for an opening.

>Go in with Kaku and see if you two can't take him down the old fashioned way.

Jurou and Kaku have been friends long enough to have a bit of an unspoken language. All it takes is a look from Jurou, and both of them are on the move.

Kaku heads in first, running at Hayate full tilt. Jurou skirts along the side, looking for an opening in Hayate's defenses. Nisha jumps off, aiming to get herself into a stealthy position. Kaku slams his fist directly into Hayate's guard. Jurou takes this chance to rush in from the right and attempt to deliver a sliding kick into his legs to knock him off balance.

This, however, does not go to plan. Jurou feels something collide with his face, and is sent flying back into the brush. Kaku follows shortly after. Hayate now stands, wooden training sword drawn. Nisha is nowhere to be seen.

>Play it stealthy, let him lower his guard and then strike. Attempt to link up with Nisha.

Jurou and Kaku never were that good at stealth, so they decide to be a distraction for Nisha, praying that she can see what they're doing. Kaku reaches into his pocket, and draws at four small, black balls. Smoke bombs. He hands two of them to Jurou.

The two split up, moving to opposite ends of the field. Hayate stands there, whistling to himself. The first smoke bomb goes off. Kaku's. Hayate turns his attention to the smoke, lowering himself into a fighting position.

The second goes off. Jurou's. Hayate quickly turns to this puff of smoke, realization coming onto his face. The third goes off. Kaku's.

He knows he's surrounded, and stares around him, searching for anything that could help him gather what was happening. The fourth goes off right on top of him, as Kaku delivers a sort of Dynamic Entry right towards Hayate. The genin catches him in the jawline, and sends him stumbling backwards. Jurou doesn't give him a chance to recover, sending two shuriken flying towards him.

The jounin catches both of the projectiles in his sword, moving for a counter-attack. Jurou and Kaku retreat into the woods, but he is hot on their tail.

They quickly rush through the treetops when Jurou hears a yelp, and turns around to see Kaku with a rope around his leg, dangling from a tree. Nisha appears from the brush, a scowl on her face.

>Quickly hide, leaving Kaku as bait. Jump Hayate when he shows.

Jurou leaps up to the rope, drawing a Kunai and goes to cut him down. It's a thin rope, so it doesn't take long. But those precious seconds didn't matter, as Hayate leaps from a nearby bush, and the next thing he knows. Jurou's vision is clouded by blackness.

He awakes next to a log, with Nisha tied to it. Kaku is on the other side, and they both have boxes of food in front of them. Hayate is kneeling in front of the group.

"Kaku managed to get both bells off of me with that smoke stunt you pulled. Nisha abandoned the team to work solo. For that, she fails. She's going back to the Academy. You two are not. Don't feed her. If you do, all of you fail. I need to go inform the Hokage of my findings. I'll be back." With that, he shunshins away.

Nisha looks at the two of you. Coal black eyes staring at the food like a hungry tiger. She doesn't speak, but Jurou can tell she is starving. Kaku stares at him, and the choice is left to Jurou.

>Cut her down, and share the food with her.

Jurou sighs, opening his box, and beginning to feed Nisha. She eats quietly, her face turning a very beet red. Kaku notices this, and sighs, drawing a Kunai and cutting the ropes down. Nisha mutters a quiet thanks as they split their food for her. Kaku breaks the quiet, and asks Nisha what her plan was.

"Well.. I wanted to lure him into a trap and play it stealthy but.. I.. didn't expect you two to make such a large distraction.." She responds quietly, seemingly quite embarrassed over the situation. "You two work well together.." She adds, looking to Jurou and Kaku.

"We've been friends for years. Got into a lot of fights together." Jurou responds, smiling. Kaku's smile vanishes as Hayate shunshins back in front of everyone.

"You cut her down." He states, staring down at the group, arms crossed. "You know what that means?"

The group has a collective gulp of nervousness.

"You pass. Congratulations."

Everyone looks at Hayate with a confused look on their faces. The sickly jounin goes into detail about teamwork, and always being there for your teammates regardless of the situation at hand. He goes on to praise Jurou's and Kaku's teamwork, and Nisha's brilliance with the trap.

The jounin states that there will be a few weeks of individual training, a week of group training, and then a D-Rank mission. He gives each of the group an option on what to train with.

(( THIS WILL DECIDE WHAT JUROU'S SPECIALTY IS. CHOOSE WISELY ))

>Chakra Control. Jurou needs to learn how to effectively use his Chakra. Spend the next few weeks on the tree walking and water walking exercises. If training is good, maybe even learn his nature.

>Kenjutsu. Hayate is a Kenjutsu specialist. Use that to Jurou's advantage. Pick up Kenjutsu skills.

>Ninjutsu. While Jurou is adequate at taijutsu from his youth, his ninjutsu skills are lacking. Learn a few basic ninjutsu to train with.

How their individual training went, and what they learned.

Kurou was picking up something he was not accustomed to. Hayate was a good teacher, and taught him the basics. He can hold his own with his sword, but he has no abilities with the sword as of yet.

Kaku focused entirely into taijutsu. He honed his street fighting skills into a relatively unorthodox style of taijutsu. He has worked off a lot of the fat he had, and replaced it with muscle tone.

Nisha went for Puppet Control mixed with Fuinjutsu. She witnessed the abilities at the Chunin Exams a few years before she had entered the Academy, and thus knew of their existence. She has a very particular way of using it. She will seal smaller marionette puppets into scrolls, and use them as traps to surround an enemy. She's not an expert at it, but is rather consistent with results in isolated training.

Everyone has one more week left to train before the group training.

Jurou benefits greatly from his training with Hayate. Even learning a weaker version of the Dance of the Crescent Moon using only one shadow clone.

Kaku, training with Lee and Guy during their individual training, manages to open the first Gate. He seems.. different after their training. Less violent, and calmer.

Nisha on the other hand suffers. She is injured by a mishap involving a poison needle, losing the entire week of training. She does manage to figure out what end of the needle the poison is on, though.

----

The week of the group training arrives, and Hayate gives the team an option. Either they can work together to improve their own individual techniques, or work together and form a group technique. Both options benefit the team.

>Work on individual techniques. That's the focus of the hardest part of the Chunin Exams, so the team should be ready.

>Group Technique. The group stage is unpredictable. The team should be ready for that. Everyone can work on individual techniques on their own.

The one thing I'd say is to slow it down a bit. Maybe go a bit more in depth with each bit of training, rather than time-skipping through it. Allow us to get a better handle and understanding on the characters. Have us meet and interact with people more.

wait Guy didnt teach Neji or Tenten the gates why would he teach some random genin?
>>
>>1868617
I did some side rolls for that.

The fluff reason is that he taught Lee the gates because he had no ninjutsu skills.

I would say the same applies to Kaku. Besides, would Guy really pass up the possibility to give Lee an adequate sparring partner?
>>
>>1868617
Yeah I thought the premise of this was working with a team of more "Normal" ninja but giving the gates out so willy nilly seems to go against that

I can dial it back. I was under the impression that the first Gate wasn't that big of a deal, but if the general consensus is to retcon it, I have no problems doing so! Just let me know.

Hayate nods at the groups decision. Hayate makes two Shadow Clones, and the group departs into separate training arenas.

----

Jurou's training.

Hayate and Jurou clashed together, swords creaking against each other, before both of them leapt backwards. The jounin was pleased with Jurou's progress, but he could do better. The genin quickly formed a clone, and rushed at the jounin. The clone came from above, and the real one came from in front of the Jounin.

Hayate redirected the original, and slashed the clone into dust. Jurou was sent skidding across the ground. He quickly regained his footing, standing up and dusting himself off. The two circled each other for a moment more, before rushing at each other once again. Jurou mirrored Hayate's style almost perfectly, both fo them clashing with each other, never really gaining any ground. It was obvious the Jounin was holding back, but Jurou wasn't an amateur at it either. He had clearly put his work into his training. Jurou attempted to deliver a wild lateral strike, but Hayate moved out of the way of the slash.

"Don't let your opponent read your strikes. Try and catch them by surprise." The sickly jounin said to Jurou, as the genin moved back into position.

(( Something just came up, and I have to go for a little while. I'll be back in a few hours, lads. Feel free to discuss character traits or possible shit you want to happen while I'm gone. ))
>>

This is much better! One more minor thing. You should add more pictures to your updates, it makes your posts stand out more, and it makes an overall better feeling for the quest.

I'm excited to see how this goes. I think playing a more basic ninja could be a lot of fun.
>>
>>1868661
Well only 4 people have been shown as being capable of opening the games

Guy's Dad who taught Guy and Lee who was considered a genius for being able to open it under the direct tutelage of Guy

Only other person outside of that is Kakashi and fuck knows how he learnt but as he's the genius copycat i'll give him a pass

Jounin Quest gets away with letting the kids learn the gates because the whole idea is the insane teacher is pretty much killing them and being incredibly irresponsible with how he is teaching it to them

Guy wouldnt teach a rando, he only taught Lee because he loves Lee too much and refuses to see him fail with his Ninja Way

Team 11 continued their individual training. Jurou becoming rather skilled with his kenjutsu. Kaku managed to be able to hold his own against Hayate with his taijutsu, and Nisha was near uncatchable in the woods when using her puppets. During Jurou's training, Hayate even brought his lover, Yugao to train with them. This added instructor drastically increased Jurou's skills as a swordsman, but he was still restricted to using his version of the Dance of the Crescent Moon, calling his ability Dance of the New Moon. Jurou had even taken to wearing the forehead protector in the style of Hayate.

It was time for their mission, a simple manual labor mission. Hayate gathered Team Eleven on a rooftop near to the center of the village, and explained the mission.

"This mission should be simple. You're going to find a lost dog that a local businessman and his family hold very dear to their hearts. Sounds easy, right?" Hayate coughs, holding his chest as he does so. Kaku raises his eyebrow. "Why can't we do something more combat related? I'm itching to get some action!"

Hayate raises an eyebrow, regarding the team.

"If you want to do a C-Rank, I won't argue. But only if the entire team agrees."

Nisha agrees wholeheartedly, and both of them look towards Jurou.

>D-Rank. Let's just get some experience under our belt first.

It's a secret. We'll find out once the Chunin Exams hit, or we go around town.

Hayate sighs, nodding once. "I'll speak to the Hokage. You three are more than ready combat-wise. And I'll come with you personally instead of sending a shadow clone." He shunshins away, leaving the team to discuss.

Kaku turns to the group, a wild smile on his face. "You hear that! We're finally going to do some real ninja work!" He slaps Jurou on the back, nearly knocking the breath out of him. Nisha rolls her eyes, but otherwise remains quiet. "Just don't freak out when we see combat for the first time, Kaku. I remember your first fight, you know." Kaku acts like he didn't hear you, turning his body to Nisha. "You've been quiet, Nisha. What's your outlook on it?"

The kunoichi thinks for a moment. "I believe that we're going to do fine. With Jurou and yourself in close range, and my puppets and fuinjutsu, along with Hayate-sensei's leadership, whatever comes at us will be easily dealt with." She speaks matter-of-factly, monotonous.

Jurou gave a slight bow. "It is a pleasure to meet the both of you." Kaku and Nisha followed suit. Hayate raised his eyebrows a bit, a tad surprised at the respect from three kids.

Tazuna grunted and Inari simpled crossed his arms and looked away. "You three, gather enough supplies for a journey to the Land of Waves. We'll restock there on our way back." Hayate asked, and the team leapt away to do so.

It was early in the morning when the team set off through the front gate of the village. Nisha had a rather large scroll hanging from her back, as well as various smaller ones on a bandolier draped across her chest. She even went so far as to have a hood that covered her face, with a black mask that was currently draped across her neck.

Kaku on the other hand, opted to go near shirtless due to the hot summer sun. It was bright, and it hadn't rained for a few days. The only clothing he had over his upper body was a small strap of cloth, draped across one shoulder, and leading diagonally down his body.

Jurou had opted to wear something a little bit heavier. He had a set of lighter kenjutsu armor on, with plates on the backs of his hands and arms. Thick boots, and plates on his shins. In all honesty, he resembled Hayate in his younger days.

The team set off, with Tazuna and Inari in tow, heading down the main road.

---

It was a few hours into the walk, and silence had fallen upon the group. They had formed a sort of diamond around the two people they were supposed to protect, with Jurou in front, and Hayate in the back. Nisha and Kaku took up the sides.

All seemed quiet when Hayate suddenly let out a cry of pain. The group all turned to see their sensei tied up with barbed chains, and two ninja clad in masks and cloaks holding said chains with large gauntlets.

Jurou hesitates for a moment, but Kaku does not. Within seconds, Kaku is on one of the Chunin, driving a leg into his side. But Kaku is too late. They pull the chain tight, and Hayate is ripped to shreds right in front of Team Eleven's eyes.

Kaku goes into a rage, wrapping his arm around one of their necks, and pulling tight. Nisha has taken up position around Tazuna and Inari, a kunai in her hand, mask pulled up over her face.

Jurou leaps behind Kaku to block the claw of one of the enemy ninja. The two hold their clash for a moment, before one of them leaps backwards. Kaku holds his headlock tightly, the enemy ninja driving his claws deep into Kaku's arm, and throwing him off. Jurou leaps in front of Kaku, to defend him while he recuperates.

They turn their eyes to Tazuna, and leap at him and Nisha. Nisha reaches for one of her scrolls, unlatching it and is just about to release it, When Hayate reappears, sword thrusted through one of the ninja. Kaku leaps forward, delivering a flying elbow to drive the remaining one into the ground.

Hayate, once the enemy Ninja had been incapacitated, immediately turned his head to Kaku. "Stop moving! Their claws are poisoned! You have to draw the poison out of your arm!" Jurou, worried about Kaku, takes up position on the still alive ninja. He pushes his sword against his neck, and holds it tightly against it, so he doesn't move.

(( Naruto's was directly in the veins on the back of his hand. Kaku has it on his arm. So there's a higher chance of survival. And Kaku is a big boy. ))

Jurou keeps his eyes locked on the enemy ninja. Edged blade of his sword resting against the side of his neck. He could hear Kaku scream as a kunai was stabbed into his arm to drain the poison. From the way it sounded, Kaku would likely lose the use of that arm for the forseeable future.

Nisha walked over to the enemy ninja, and Jurou. "You okay?" She whispered, staring at him with curious eyes. Jurou nodded, his sword hand quivering. "Are you sure, you seem shaken up." She placed a hand on Jurou's shoulder, causing him to look at her.

She was obviously shaken up. Her shoulders shook, and the hand on Jurou's shoulder was quivering heavily. This wasn't what anyone expected. Hayate dragged the enemy ninja, tying him to a nearby tree.

--

While Jurou and Nisha tended to a now unconcious Kaku, Hayate ripped into Tazuna.

"You want to tell me why there were Chunin from the Village Hidden in the Mist trying to kill you? Because the last time I checked, you asked for standard protection from bandits and highwaymen. Not trained ninja." His fists are clenched, and he is nearly nose to nose with Tazuna. The old man sighs, and begins to speak of the true story.

Jurou blanks out most of the story, focusing on his best friend laying unconscious just a few feet from him. But from what he can remember, Tazuna is being chased by some crimeboss that happens to have ninja assassins working for him. Hayate seems more than pissed, but they are too far from the village to head back. The only option is to camp here for the night, and keep moving in the morning. Hayate begins to pass out watch times.

>Take first watch with Nisha. Jurou can't sleep right now anyway.

>Take second watch with Kaku. He should be up by then.

>Take third watch by yourself. Jurou would rather be alone.

Jurou volunteers to take third watch. Nisha takes second, and Hayate takes first with Kaku to watch after him.

Jurou lays his head down, and falls into a dreamless sleep. It doesn't seem very long until Nisha is gently pushing his shoulder to wake him up. The fire is still going, a set of warmth in the cold night. Nisha, however, doesn't lay down, she sits herself next to Jurou. "Can't sleep?" Jurou asks, warming his hands up. The kunoichi shakes her head, and continues her gaze into the fire.

The two are quiet for a time, before Nisha speaks up. "Today wasn't what I expected.." She stared at the fire for a moment longer, before turning her eyes to Jurou. The genin shakes his head, sighing. "No, no it wasn't. I expected something.. more glorious I guess." Jurou shakes his head, poking a stick into the fire to rekindle it.

Nisha leans her weight into Jurou's. The young ninja looks at her and sighs. His father had given him a look before he left. A worried look. He passed it off as just his dad being overzealous about his safety, but this is what he meant. Being a ninja is dangerous work. Hayate stirred, waking up to replace Kaku's bandages, and noticed the two sitting by the fire. He elected not to say anything, and focused on his work.

Jurou felt Nisha still, and noticed that the kunoichi had fallen asleep. He gently sat her down near the fire, and placed her blanket over her.

"Rough, isn't it." Hayate spoke, walking up to the genin, and sitting next to him.

"Yeah, not what I expected. But it's nothing I can't handle." Jurou keeps poking at the fire, eyes flicking towards Kaku every now and again. Hayate notes this and lets out a soft sigh. "He'll be fine. We managed to get the poison out before it spread too far. He'll lose the use of that arm for a few days, so if we run into anyone else, he'll be at a disadvantage.."

Jurou simply nods, poking the fire. The two don't speak for the rest of the night, just enjoying the night sky and warm fire.

--

The next morning, the group sets off. Kaku's arm is in a sling, and he's a lot quieter than normal. Jurou takes the lead, as Hayate takes the rear once more. The group continues to walk, when a white rabbit runs in front of the group. The group ignores it, when they hear something that sounds like.. a sword spinning.

"Drop!" Hayate yells, and the entire group complies, as a sword the size of a person slams into a tree, and sticks there. A man stands on top of it, clad with bandages around his mouth, and cloth around his arms.

"Zabuza Momochi. From the Village Hidden in the Mist. One of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist." Hayate seems.. pleased. Almost happy. The grin on his face proves it.

"Hayate Gekko. No wonder the Demon Brothers failed.." The man speaks. His voice is low, and gravelly. Jurou can't help but be intimidated. His hand rests on his sword. Hayate draws his sword, and steps forward.

"Team Eleven. Protect the Bridge Builder. This one is mine." Hayate seems even more pleased as the area begins to fill with mist, Zabuza vanishes. He reappears on the water, one hand in a seal in front of his face, the other above his head.

"Ninja Art: Hidden Mist Jutsu." The entire area fills with even more mist, and Zabuza.. vanishes.

Nisha unlatches the scroll on her back, slamming it onto the ground. She draws the scroll open, biting her thumb open as she does, sliding it across the paper.

"Ninja Art: Wooden Dummy Manipulation Jutsu!" She shouts, as a puff of smoke surrounds the puppet. Jurou can already see her plan. A puppet with the exact same outfit as Nisha now stands on the otherside of Tazuna, and Nisha herself is nowhere to be seen. Likely having disappeared into the woods in the cloud of smoke.

Kaku has his good arm up in a defensive posture, scanning the treeline hard. He seems nervous, knowing that with his disability, he'll be next to useless.

Jurou has his sword out, both hands on the hilt, and in a defensive posture. He scans the other treeline, cursing to himself. This is not a good look for the group.

Hayate simply waits for a moment, before holding a single seal in front of his face, and using the force of his chakra, blowing the mist away. Zabuza takes this time to strike, flying at Tazuna.

Jurou quickly launches a kunai at Zabuza, causing him to adjust his flight slightly. This puts the missing-nin slightly off of where he was aiming to go. As he lands, Kaku aims for a sweep of his legs, causing him to have to leap before he managed to get his balance. He lands a few feet away from the main group, as the defensive life reforms.

Hayate takes this chance to leap at the swordsmen. "Leaf Style: Crescent Moon Dance!" He shouts, as two shadow clones move from the other sides of him. The real Hayate coming from above him. Zabuza, however, is no slouch of a swordsman, and gives a heavy swing of his sword, causing the two clones to fly backwards and dispel.

Hayate's strike is barely dodged, and Zabuza headbutts him right into the chest, sending him sprawling. He doesn't move once he lands. Zabuza turns to the group, and begins to walk towards them.

Jurou walks forward, sword at his side. It's now or never. His sensei is incapacitated, Nisha is waiting for the moment to strike, and Kaku is wounded. Jurou is the only one that can hold him off for the time being. He holds his sword in front of him, ready for the onslaught that Zabuza can dish out.

The missing-nin doesn't waste any time, rushing forward with that massive sword. Jurou slides under the strike, aiming to sweep Zabuza's legs with his blade. The swordsman leaps over it, slamming his elbow into Jurou's head. Jurour slams into the ground, rolling out of the way just the massive sword slams into the ground inches from where he just was. The genin leaps up, tossing two shuriken at him, which are deflected.

But that was just a distraction.

"Poison Needle Barrage!" Is the shout Jurou hears from the woods, as another puppet swings from a tree branch, firing a barrage of senbon at the missing-nin. He's sent on the defensive, being pushed back while he holds his sword up to block the barrage. A few of them slice against his legs and arms, and he curses, leaping back out of her range, but towards Tazuna. Whilst he is off balance, Kaku delivers a Dynamic Entry right to the side of his abdomen, sending Zabuza hurtling towards the water. This gives Hayate the opening his was looking for.

"Tsukikage!" The jounin shouts, shooting towards Zabuza at breakneck speeds, leaving afterimages behind him as he does so, slashing his sword through the abdomen of the missing-nin, sending him floating down the river, his own blood pooling around him.

Well, Zabuza falls victim to trickery really easy. In a stand-up fight, he's gonna win.

But if someone can catch him off-guard, he's pretty weak.

Jurou keeps his eyes set on Zabuza as Nisha emerges from the woodline, two senbon embedded into her arm. As the swordsman disappears from vision, Jurou could swear that he saw someone grab him from the water. Dismissing it as a trick of the eye, he turns back to the group. Hayate is bent over, holding his chest hard. Nisha is feeling his chest, and looks up to Jurou.

"That headbutt cracked a few of his ribs. He's having trouble breathing.." She seems worried. Hayate lays on the ground, coughing up a storm. Kaku kneels next to him, unsure of what to do. Tazuna and Inari look back at each other, and then to the group.

"We can delay our trip a few days if he needs medical attention." Tazuna states, a conflicted look on his face. Hayate is unable to speak, and looks at Jurou. Kaku and Nisha join him.

The decision is up to him.

>Head back to the village. Hayate's wounds could be more fatal than the team realizes.

>Keep pushing on. There has to be someone in the Land of Waves that can heal him.

"Let's head back. Hayate-sensei is hurt pretty badly. We'll just speak to the Hokage when we get back." Jurou walks forward to help Hayate to his feet. Nisha's puppets crumble, the jutsu dispelled, and the group heads back to Konoha.

The trip back is uneventful, aside from a few scares with Hayate's breathing. The team breaks the village gates, and Kaku and Nisha head to the Hospital with Hayate. This leaves Jurou the only one to report back to the Hokage.

Jurou sighs, leading the two to the office of the Third Hokage. As he walks by, the genin notices something. People look at him differently. They don't just ignore him anymore. Now, even if it's not much, they at least give him a passing glance. A sign of even just a little bit of respect. This caused Jurou to walk with his chest puffed out just a little bit, even if he was reporting a slight mission failure.

The guards at the gate let Jurou in once he explains the story to them. The group of Jurou, Tazuna, Inari, and two Anbu guards head up the stairs, and just outside the door to the Hokage's office.

Jurou takes a deep breath, and gives two knocks. "Come in." A voice says from inside the room. Jurou enters, walks about halfway into the room, and kneels before the Hokage.

"Lord Hokage. Reporting from the mission to the Land of Waves." Tazuna and Inari step in behind you, causing the Third Hokage to seem rather suspicious. "What happened?" He asks, rubbing his chin.

"Half a day after we set out from the village, we were attacked by two missing-nin chunin from the Village Hidden in the Mist. The Demon Brothers, if I recall. We managed to defeat them while only sustaining minor injuries. However, a day after we were beset upon by a man known as Zabuza Momochi." At this, the Third Hokage's eyes widen. "We managed to drive him off, but Hayate Gekko-sensei suffered heavy wounds, and is currently heading towards the Hospital. We made the decision to turn around because of the possibility of even stronger ninja, and to get Hayate-sensei, and my teammates the medical attention they require." Jurou remains kneeling, but falls quiet after speaking.

The Third Hokage rubs his chin. "Walk with me to the Hospital. And tell me the full story. Spare no detail."

On the walk to the Hospital, Jurou re-tells the events of the past few days. The Third Hokage seems troubled by these. Upon making it into the Hospital, you see that your teammates are all in healthy condition, with bandages around their wounds. Hayate-sensei is resting in a bed, his breathing seeming ragged, and interrupted by coughing fits, but otherwise healthy. The Third Hokage looks between Jurou and Hayate with a small smile on his face. "Almost like twins.." He mutters under his breath.

Jurou remains calm, arms crossed. However, it comes across as.. distant. Nisha shoots Jurou a look that seems worried, while Hayate just seems saddened. The next few days are uneventful. Jurou helps take care of his comrades, as they recover. The Tayuna mission is given to a higher ranked team, and they set off. Hayate and the team recover, a few months before the Chunin Exams. The team takes this time to do some lower rank D-Rank missions, all of which are completely uneventful. Taking care of a dog, babysitting, helping someone grow a garden, things of that nature.

Not edgy you need to learn what that term actually means

>>
>>1869982
Holy fuck your sense of pacing is really painful, not even on thread 2 and we could be at the Chuunin Exam

Follow the amount of arc's canon Naruto has, he has a light few segments related to team building as well as training.

Then he has his big first mission, which you gave us the same mission but then ended it when you should have had another event take its place that would have actual ramifications/rewards.

Then Chuunin exam training which could be skipped or not. As is we have a bit of a mess pace wise and ability wise im honestly not sure, I think MC and puppet girl are fine, the gates.......well having them before mission 1 was a bad call and having him be a 1-1 with dynamic entrys and whatnot wont be great either
>>
>>1869650
He is an S-Rank missing-nin. I don't think he could be considered weak at all, especially up against a couple of genin, one of which is injured. The dude is literally called the "Demon of the Hidden Mist" and is the sole reason the Night of Blood practice was stopped in the Hidden Mist.

It's a quiet day, with the sun shining overhead, not a cloud to be seen. Hayate stands in front of his team, and glances over them in turn. Jurou, looking like a mini-clone of Hayate himself, stands with his arms crossed, waiting for his sensei to say something. Kaku, shirtless, showing off his budding musculature, flexes in the sunlight, entranced by his own muscles. Nisha, hooded and masked in black, scrolls attached to her body. The team, at first glance, seemed rather formidable. But little cracks definitely had begun to show.

Jurou had gotten a little too serious. He focused on the pessimistic approach to life, seeing all roads as leading to failure. Even after the minor victory against Zabuza, whom they learned was still alive and kicking, the teams near death had really stuck to him. The young genin already had a look in his eyes resembling that of Hayate. A sort of.. bored detachedness.

Kaku, however, was the opposite. Optimistic to a fault, but more engrossed in his self than anything around him. Even now, the genin was admiring the muscles on his arms, flexing and unflexing, as if showing off to a crowd. Stealth wasn't a word in Kaku's vocabulary, favoring rushing in and dealing with his problems head on. Jurou and Kaku had grown distant from each other with their training. At least, that's what Jurou thought was the case.

Nisha was quiet. Even more quiet than before. If she spoke, it was quick and to the point. No minced words. No unneeded details. The kunoichi hid behind her mask in more ways than one, caving inward onto herself, not letting anyone in on her true thoughts. Even Hayate had problems reading the young girl, and that was proving to be a problem. Especially with training.

The other teams had mixed results. A few had gone on dangerous C-Rank missions and returned unharmed. Some failed out completely. One team was completely wiped out. Jounin and all. The details were lax, as it was an ongoing investigation, but it still made the village uneasy.

Hayate cleared his throat, bringing everyones attention to him. "We fared as well as can be expected against the Demon Brothers and Zabuza. All of you worked well in the face of that.. terror. The only problem was how close it got. If it weren't for Nisha and her puppets, I don't think any of us would have made it out of there alive." Nisha nods, barely perceptible. Hayate turns his head to Jurou. "You did well in distracting him, but it was an idiotic choice. Never face down an enemy you know you cannot beat unless it is the last possible choice. That's how you get yourself killed. Kaku, you were injured, so you did as well as can be expected. You were lucky with those kicks. I think Zabuza was overconfident and let his guard down with you three." The jounin sighs, shutting his eyes for a minute.

(( How's this for pacing? Good, bad.. something else? Feedback is always appreciated!))

>>
>>1870518
The way its written is fine

The issue with pacing hasnt been with 1 individual post so far its with how quickly we go through entire events, so cant possibly comment on the pacing until you've done a lot more posts
>>
>>1870518
Personally I feel your pacing is a bit fast as we are already at the training for chuunin exams time. If you can slow down the pace it will allow us to get more familliar with our character.

I'm also rather curious what you will do with Hayate as in canon he dies, so if he manages to survive how will he improve later on?
>>
>>1870518
The pacing itself isn't too bad, honestly. The main issue is the speed at which we progress. I figured with a quest called Naruto Genin Quest, that we'd slowly work our way up the ranks of being a Genin. The typical stuff we do as a Genin in most Naruto quests(training, social links, even missions) have become somewhat pushed to the wayside, which while it's an... interesting change of pace, it's a little jarring.

Naruto Jonin Quest gets a pass because as a Jonin, there isn't much training to do; but it's instead substituted by training the team of Genin, so it works out, even if it is a little faster compared to most Naruto Quests.

If you want a good example of pacing and progression from other, similar quests, I'd recommend taking a look at Boruto Quest and Shinobi Quest. The former has a "normal MC with sharp intelligence and a powerful work ethic", while the latter has a "genius MC that is exceptional in most aspects". Both of them portray character growth pretty well, and in the end, that's what's important.

Boruto Quest:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=Boruto

Shinobi Quest:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=Shinobi+Quest

At the rate we're going, we're not going to get attached to any of the characters, MC included, because we're rushing at it at full speed. In most forms of literature, quests included, characters make the story; the plot is important, but secondary. Take some time to slow down, and don't be afraid to make players go through a day or two as they would normally. Advancing the time by weeks and months should only happen if nothing is happening in the story.

With all that said, I've got great hopes for this quest. Kenjutsu is underutilized, and we've picked an interesting direction for our MC. Now, we've just got to actually walk the path instead of skipping over it.

>Done meta-talk during the thread
A lot of that happening here
>>
>>1870703
True, but seeing as the session is at a tentative pause, it's generally acceptable. Plus, feedback isn't too bad of a thing to ask for. If we were discussing possible waifus with the QM or something of the like during the session, then that'd definitely be an issue, especially if it'll slow down update speed.
>>
>>1870577
Yea I agree. If you need a reference for pacing characters Boruto Quest is good. Other than that most QMs will look over the source material to get an idea of the power levels different characters should have. You don't have to follow canon per say but its important to make it seem like it follows that universes rules and sensibilities. Unless your just using Naruto as a base for a completely different world that is.

"We're going to focus on individual training for this week." With this, Hayate makes two shadow clones. Each Hayate takes a team member, and shunshins to a different part of the training field. Jurou and his Hayate stand opposite each other, Hayate rubbing his chin.

"Your skills at kenjutsu are growing, for sure. But, I feel your lack of diversity is going to come around and bite you in the long run. I'll leave the choice up to you. We can work on your kenjutsu even more, or we can branch out, and mix up your style."

Jurou ponders this for a moment, arms crossed. Kenjutsu in and of itself is relatively easier to pick up and learn than say.. ninjutsu or genjutsu. It would take a lot of time to branch out, but would be beneficial in the long run. The way Jurou sees it, he has a few options.

>Stick with kenjutsu. Don't fix what isn't broken.

"Ninjutsu. I don't want to be useless without my sword." Jurou says, nodding his head. Hayate smirks, nodding alongside him. The jounin walks over to the treeline.

"Since I assume you know the basics. The Body Replacement Technique, and the Clone Technique. You're going to work on your Chakra Control. The basic exercises. First. You're going to climb this tree. Without using your hands." The jouning smirked, waiting for the inevitable reaction.

Jurou narrowed his eyes, utterly confused by what his sensei was saying. "How am I supposed to climb a tree without using my hands? That doesn't make any sense." The young genin waited for an explanation, but what didn't expect was to see Hayate walking up the tree as if it was the street. Jurou was shocked, watching his sensei standing sideways on the side of a tree trunk.

"It's simple, really. Focus your chakra to the soles of your feet. Have it connect to the tree. Being able to focus your chakra in battle is hard, as you aren't able to focus entirely on gathering it. This can mean the different between life and death." Hayate leapt down from the tree, handing the genin a kunai. "Mark the highest point you reach each time. Then try to beat that point every other time. I'll be working with your other teammates while you work on this." With that, the jounin shunshins away, leaving Jurou alone in the woods.

>Stay calm, and attempt to walk up the tree slowly.

Jurou stared at the tree, centering his mind on it. His hands came together and formed the seal, and his eyes shut. He blacked out everything, focusing only on the flow of chakra surrounding him and flowing through his body. He felt it around him, and slowly, he pushed it to his feet. The grass around his feet began to shake and part as the chakra became visible.

Slowly, the genin walked forward, eyes still shut. His breathing was calm and collected, his mind focused entirely on the soles of his feet, and the tree directly in front of him. He placed one foot onto the tree. Lifting his weight up, he placed another foot in front of that one. And then another. Slowly, he realized he had begun walking on the tree, when he heard a crunch, and he lost his footing.

Before he could fall, he slashed a mark into the tree, and fell to the ground, the impact knocking the wind out of him. He laid on the ground for a moment, before looking at how far he had managed to make it up. Not even half-way. Where his foot had lost balance, there was a deep indent in the bark, where his chakra had impacted against it.

>>
>>1872901
This is good! Don't rush, and don't worry too much, just take things slow and let us get to know the characters, and speed stuff up only when there's nothing else to do.
>>
>>1872901

Jurou stared at the tree once more. This time, he had the feeling in his head. He knew what he had to do, the only trick now was to perfect it. His eyes closed, his fingers formed the seal, and forward he went, walking up the tree.

--

It had been a few hours since Hayate had checked on Jurou, and he felt now was the perfect time. He shunshined back to the treeline to see that nearly every tree had some sort of deep impacted foothold into it. But there was one three that didn't. Kunai marks covered the tree, and as the jounin followed it up, he noticed Jurou passed out on top of a tree branch, head resting against the main trunk of the tree. His shoes had been torn apart, leaving only a few straps and his bare soles.

Hayate grabbed the battered genin, and laid him on the grass. Let him rest for the time being. He'll be up in the morning.

Nisha is hospitalized. During a training accident, a few of her senbon impaled her, poisoning her with her own poison. She's currently under anesthetic, and is having the poison removed slowly. It isn't life threatening, but it will reduce her training time in the future.

Kaku, on the other hand, got in some excellent sparring practice with Rock Lee. Gai was off on a mission, and left his team to train on their own, and Hayate managed to recruit Lee into some sparring with Team 11's taijutsu user. He managed to gain a lot of good training in that day. His skill has improved immensely.

>>

hah, i just knew the poison was gonna get her again.

can't think of much, shit to help with our sword i guess.
Set the blade on fire, shunshin our arms, all those jutsus they do on shurikens and other projectiles but to our sword, something with our sword extending
>>
>>1873274

Maybe something involving displacing our weapon? For example, we plunge our sword into the ground and it phases out of a tree branch 20 feet away...
>>
>>1873222
Well, let's see.
Chakra control and ninjutsu being what they are.
We could try applying variations that incorporate it in unexpected ways into Kenjutsu.
And as we're doing that we could also try different weapons. Kenjutsu isn't just swords after all.
That said. I think we need group training.
Everybody collapsing into themselves like they seem to be is pretty awful for the team.
If only we had some manner of veteran instructor to sit the three of us down and talk sense into us.
>>
shit, thats a neat idea.
fuck, we could carry a bunch of swords, maybe in a kind of bow quiver and just shoot them out of anywhere . sort of like hakus needles from his ice mirrors.

Weapon Substitution Jutsu?

Wind based vacuum slash that doesn't break skin but does break blood vessels in the "strike zone"?

Or we have the classics:
Solar Flare by way of magnifying reflected light on the blade.
Could be modified or expanded on to create a new technique, not unlike frying ants with a magnifying glass.

By which I mean "lasers", classic sword beams.

With Genjutsu you have the classics: "my sword isn't quite where you thought."
>>
Maybe, if we level our kenjutsu enough, we can do with the sword what Gai did with his fists when he fought kisame?
>>
>>1873386
That's tomorrows training. Don't you worry your little head.

Weapon Displacement Technique is an option, for sure.

>>1873395

>>1873409
Once we get to finding out what Jurou's nature is, we'll do some nature based jutsu.

The weapon substitution jutsu is a great idea.

>>1873444
If we ever expand into genjutsu, I have some ideas on neat tricks. Mostly moving the sword a few inches from where they think it is.
Okay, so I think I have a pretty decent idea of what you guys want.

-More group training.

-A lot of tricksy shit with our sword(s)

-Nature based jutsu with our sword(s)

-Possible Genjutsu later on.

> Spacial distortion jutsu. Swinging the sword causes it to bend, warp and stretch

> A jutsu that causes swords to suddenly jut out of a solid surface. Then you take it further, making swords manifesting on the surface of the swords you created eventually resulting in some kind of absurd forest of razor sharp metal

Also let's us study toxins with Nisha, and help Kaku with his training.

We need a jutsu or something that lets us use swords unweilded. Like they just act as drones and attack during the time we're readying another swing.

If we learned that Fuinjutsu stuff, we could actually just send rebar flying out of scrolls on our armor that shoot into anyone trying to attack us.

Better yet, we have a scroll that shoots out metal pipes at people. Forget dodging them behind trees, seding them out at like 70mph is gonna fuck up any cover they find.
>>
Making our own impromptu swords would also be great incase we drop a sword or to feint an enemy.
Out of lightning or some shit.

If we git gud at wood element stiff, we could just use wooden swords and grow them to attack. Needles all over it while it randomly branches out after a missed swong would be fucking neat, and easily catch opponents by surprise.

You cant learn wood element, its a kekkei genkai so either your born with it or you are not

The setting is Naruto anon. You're kidding yourself if you think that you can escape the edginess...

It'll cling to you with magnetic persistence and stain the quest to the core, no matter what you choose to do...

At the DMV. Responding on my phone.
That's Naruto for you.

This is a universe where people can make clones of themselves, and it's little more than a graduation requirement for the equivalent of Middle School.

That said, I'm going to try and stay on the 'normal dude' aspect. Sure, we're going to have some special stuff no one else has. But that's going to be achieved through work. It won't be some 'oh its in my bloodline' shenan.
