You feel a prodding finger poking your cheek, and you groan. Forcing your eyes open to see a girl looking down at you. You recoil, as you start to remember what happened. The fight, this girl, and the Titan-class. You're laying on the sand, the girl sitting right next to you, and off in the distance, you see the Titan, sprawled out a ways away from you. The girl must have dragged you away from it. You'll need to survey the damage done to it, but... you also need to find out where you are. You left your hoverbike at the bunker... Jeez, you hope it didn't get destroyed in the blast. Sam and Maria would be furious with you. It's morning now, which means you've spent at least all night out here. Your aunt must be worried sick about you.

"Who are you?" The girl's still staring at you, with those intense red eyes of her. Jeez.

"I, uh... I'm Hunter. Who are you?"

She stands suddenly, doing what you think is supposed to be a formal pose. "I am Princess Ahri of the Vaahl Empire! I must return, there's a war going on."

You blink. Princess Ahri? You've heard about her in history class. That doesn't make sense, she was your age when she vanished, and that was fifteen years ago, she should be much older than she is. Not to mention that she's supposed to be most likely dead.

Wasn't this bunker supposed to give you answers? So far it's only given you more questions and a splitting headache.

She pauses for a moment. "I believe by your calendar it is 2020, correct?"

You pause, shaking your head. "It's 2035... What's the last thing you remember?"

"I... was preparing for a meeting. It was a diplomatic mission with your kind. Everything gets somewhat hazy, and... then... I woke up and saw you."

Wait, that makes even less sense. You've never heard of any diplomatic meetings until the Vaahl surrendered, which was nearly a year after the Princess vanished.

Ahri looks at you, judging by the look on her face, she's completely terrified. "I have been unconscious for fifteen years? What has happened? My people must need me." You think you even start to see tears on her eyes. You can't exactly blame her, given the circumstances.

"The war ended, like... not long after you vanished. The fact that you're alive is a really big deal."

You stare at her. None of this makes any sense. A part of you wants to offer some comfort to the girl, but then you remember she's an alien princess who's been missing for the past fifteen years. Getting some answers is more important right now.

"What do you mean a diplomatic meeting? I've never heard of anything like that in the news or history books."

She blinks the tears away and regards you suspiciously, before sitting down next to you, putting the both of you on somewhat even footing.

"It was to discuss terms. We were fighting to a standstill. Your Chevaliers were too powerful, and our attempts to build weapons on par were falling behind. Even so, our ships and ground troops were enough to keep things even. But lives were being lost. Your people reached out to us first, and suggested a neutral meeting place. My father and I were to go and meet with representatives of your world. We arrived at the meeting and... I do not remember anything else until I awoke in that tank, and you were there."

She shivers slightly, and you think. What does this mean? Rose sent you to the bunker and said it would give you answers. Does an alien princess who could reignite a bloody war count as answers? Things just keep getting weirder. You sigh, and take your jacket off, handing it to Ahri.

She regards you suspiciously, but eventually decides that you're trustworthy enough, at least for now, and takes the jacket, wrapping it around herself. She pouts, and looks at you.

"... Hunter." She says your name carefully, it must be very odd to her. "Where are we? I appreciate you saving me back there, but... I would like to get back to my people... I need to speak with my father. I am sure you will be handsomely rewarded for bringing me back."

She seems distraught, and pulls your jacket tighter around herself. You feel bad for her, but you still need more info.

"Ahri, do you know why your people invaded us in the first place?"

She thinks on it for a few minutes, although she still looks shell-shocked about the possibilities of her people turning on her. "Well... my father was furious about something you did to him. I don't know what, but..."

"Are you saying humans and the Vaahl were in contact before the war?"

She stares at you like that's the stupidest question in the world.

"Of course they were. For decades actually, before I was even born."

She seems confused, but you step back. "Hold on, one minute, I need to talk to someone."

You pull out your phone and call Sam. At the very least she might be able to make some sense of all this.

She picks up almost immediately.

"Hunter! You dumbass! Where the hell are you?! Everyone's been worried sick!"

"Oh, uh. Yeah. I had a weird day. Sorry. I need your help."

She doesn't hesitate. "Where are you?"

"Uh... somewhere in the Mojave? It's a long story."

She sighs, "I can track your phone. Gimme a bit, I'll be out to get you soon."

"Tell Aunt Maria I'm alright, will ya?"

"Of course."

With that, the two of you hang up, and you look at Ahri. "Okay, well. You should... stay there for now. I'm gonna go check out the Titan."

She nods as you head off to the machine.

It's pretty badly damaged. The legs took the brunt of the damage, but there's a lot of problems everywhere. Hey, maybe Sam will get to fulfill her dream by fixing the Chevalier you immediately broke.

You clamber into the cockpit, and begin to fiddle around with the controls. It's weird. You've seen the inside of a Titan-class cockpit before. This looks... different. Not majorly so, but... not exactly the same. In a lot of weird ways.

Eventually, after a bit of fiddling, something happens.

You see your father.

"Hello, Hunter."

What the fuck? It's a video, you realize. Somehow recorded and saved inside the Chevalier? Your father, he looks... hurt.

"I'm sorry you have to see my like this. Sadly... I'm dying. The bastards... they've already taken your mother."

He takes a drag from his cigarette and sighs.

"Hunter, kiddo. I'm sorry to put you in this position. If Rose does this right you should be 16. I know this is a lot to take in, but this can't wait, and you're the only one capable..."

"Look, the girl, I'm sure you've found her now. She is the key to all of this. You need to protect her. I can't explain much more now. They're coming. The Chevalier, it should be enough. I built it specially for you. It can read you, better than most Chevaliers can. The better pilot you are, the better machine you have to work with. Even though it's a basic Titan... it can be one of the most powerful Chevaliers ever, in the right hands."

Suddenly, the door opens, and a voice rings out.

"Nathan, we're tiring of these games! Where is she!"

You watch as your father draws a gun, knocking out the video. You can still hear audio, as you listen to gunshots go off.

You wipe the tears off of your cheeks and try to compose yourself.

You really hadn't thought of a name at all. You've been so busy with everything that a name hasn't seemed that important to you. You look at the wrecked old Chevalier, and start to think.

It's a Titan-class, which automatically makes you think of the Titans from Greek mythology. Of those you can't help but think of Atlas, the Titan cursed to hold up the world. It seems pretty fitting, since you feel like you have a lot on your shoulders yourself right now. You might actually have Atlas beat, considering you have both Earth and the Vaahl weighing on your shoulders.

"I think... Atlas would make for a good name," you finally say, after some pondering. Atlas. Looking over your Chevalier, the name Atlas fits, and you start to feel somehow, a deeper affinity for the wrecked piece of machinery.

Sam chuckles while she works, "You always did like mythology."

Ahri just seems confused, clearly they didn't teach her classical myths on Vaahl.

Eventually, Sam emerges from your Chevalier, grease staining her clothes and smeared across her face. "Well, it's... weird. I think what your dad said was right. It's a specially made Titan, built to adapt and improve to you. It's more modular than any I've seen. With the right materials, I might even manage to upgrade this thing, although some parts are just... completely beyond me. Whoever built this was some genius. Still, I've repaired it enough for now. Are you ready to get back now?"

Sam shrugs, "Probably! Don't let it get to you, okay? She just wants to keep you safe. I do too. I still haven't forgiven you for worrying everyone so much." She cracks a smile and then gets back on her bike, but you call out to her before she can leave.

Sheepishly, you rub the back of your head. "Uh... Maria actually said I'm not allowed to have girls stay over night until I'm 18 or I move out, and, uh... I don't wanna get her more mad at me."

Sam rolls her eyes and sighs, "Hunter Everett, you are the biggest loser I know. C'mon, Ahri." The two girls hop on Sam's bike, and you watch as they drive off. Well, at least Maria won't get even more mad than she already is. You clamber up into the cockpit of Atlas, and sigh. It's still pretty damaged, but Sam did a pretty good job repairing it, at least considering what tools she had available. It's enough to make it back to your house, but not enough for a fight.

You fly back to your house, and settle down in your backyard. A lot of people are staring as you climb out of the Chevalier. You open the door, only for Maria to immediately jump onto you, wrapping you in a very, very tight hug.

"Oh my God, Hunter! I missed you so much... I'm sorry... I shouldn't have yelled at you, and..." You can tell by the blush on your Aunt's face, and the way she's talking at a million miles a minute, she's drunk. She finally looks up, noticing Atlas standing there.

"... Wow... i-is that yours?"

You sigh, preparing for the punishment to come.

The two of you head inside, and she sighs as she falls into the couch. You notice on the counter is a bottle of wine, presumably what she was drinking from. It looks like she barely drank any and she's already drunk. Jeez...

"Hunter, I love you. You're so grown up now, it scares me sometimes... I forget that you've gotta make your own decisions now." She looks up at you and smiles. "You've gotten handsome and everything. You look like a real hero."

You smile, she's definitely drunk. "Thanks Maria," you say, patting her head as she starts to drift off to sleep on the couch.

You sigh, lifting your aunt up in your arms. She's completely passed out, and is even beginning to snore quietly. You chuckle lightly, she'll probably be a lot more angry when she wakes up with a hangover, but... for now she seemed much more accepting. You wonder how much of that was the wine. You take her upstairs, gently tucking her into her bed. She tosses and turns in the bed, and you leave her to go check up on Sam and Ahri.

As you quickly head over to the Cross house, you hope everything went alright with Ahri and Sam's parents. They've never exactly been as strict and protective as Maria, but... Sam still just brought home a complete stranger to their house. You wonder how that went down. You knock on Sam's door, only for her father to answer.

"Oh! Hunter! I didn't realize we were going to have more than one guest over. Luckily, we have plenty of food. Would you like to join us for dinner?"

You can hear the sounds of conversation from inside the house. Well, you guess there was no reason to worry...

She's often complained about how boring her parents are, but Ahri looks incredibly confused by the dinner conversation.

Sam grins and waves, "Hey Hunter, have you met the new transfer student yet? The school picked us for her to live with." Sam's mother nods, clapping her hands together as she does so. "It's so exciting! It's a bit strange that they didn't tell us first, but we get to help strengthen the relationship between the humans and the Vaahl! It really is great." Ahri looks at you, seemingly relieved that you've arrived. There's an empty seat beside Sam, and another empty seat beside Ahri. You hesitate for a moment, and look between the two.

You sit down next to Sam, she is your best friend after all, and you've known her for pretty much ever. Ahri pouts as you don't sit next to her, but you shoot her an apologetic glance. Sam doesn't seem to notice either way. She quickly turns towards you, grinning.

"So! How did Atlas hold up on your way home?"

"Oh, uh... it held up pretty well. It's still a little bit damaged, but all things considered, it's doing alright."

Sam nods, "Right! Well, maybe I can take another look at it?" she turns towards her father. "Dad! Hunter got a Chevalier! Can I borrow your tools?"

Her father chuckles. "Well, sure, Samantha. Hey, what class did you get Hunter?"

You shrug, "Uh... just an old Titan-class." You didn't even tell Maria everything, there's no way you're telling Sam's dad much. "It was a gift from my dad. A birthday present."

As soon as dinner is over, Sam drags you to her father's garage, and picks up a giant toolbox. It's definitely too big for you to carry, but Sam doesn't seem to mind at all, and carries it out to where you parked Atlas. She immediately starts to get to work on the Chevalier, as you sit nearby, watching her work under the stars.

"Hey, Hunter! How do you wanna use this thing? It's super modular, right? I'll have to give it specific upgrades, depending on your plan."

You think for a minute, pondering. What do you wanna go for?
