[ARTIFICER QUEST PART 9 START]

Gang Ryong is just standing there, not making a sound.

To buy yourself some time, you flip your cloak off and pull your hood down. You suppose you have some explaining to do.

The question is how to go about this:
> Ask him why he cares
> Go with the truth

Hey StoryT in the Character Sheet it says Sierra still has the cloak, but didn't we get it back?

"Nothing actually illegal surprisingly enough," You manage to get a rather light and casual tone despite the situation, "I had evidence that the Gambino Train kidnapping was a complete sham, so I handed it over to the Genovese so they could prove their innocence and get back at the man who tried to murder me, Sierra, and Goo Hwi".

At the mention of his name, Ryong pauses.

"Well, that's right, Goo Hwi mentioned some kind of attack on the way here. Thank you, for that."

Oh thank fu-

"That said," He's glaring straight at you now, "I don't really care if you get involved with the Underground, John. But if you drag that shit back with you to my home, we're going to have a problem. That's all".

He steps back around the corner and, after you peak around the corner to check, he's gone.

Well, that happened.

Checking your Gauntlet, it's already past midnight. You've got work in the morning, so it's time to get back to the Inn.

Making your way out of the Water District as fast as you can, it's not long before you pass over that threshold to the Earth District. The streets are almost entirely empty at this point, the nighttime festivities being contained to bars at this hour.

Arriving back to the Dragon's Lair Inn, you don't see any sign of Gang Ryong. You're not entirely sure if that's a good thing or not.

Wasting no more time, you enter, climb the stairs to the second story, and make your way to your rented room.

Opening the door, you're not entirely shocked to see Sierra sitting on your bed staring outside.

You say?

"I'm going to need you to move a bit," You speak up as you walk across the room, unclasping your sword from your side and setting it down on your table.

Sierra, practically jumping out of her skin, just barely avoids you as you slam headfirst into your pillow with a slight groan.

"John!" She sounds extremely caught off guard, "What the hell are you doing?!"

"It's my bed," Your muffled reply answers her.

"John..." Sierra's voice is full of exasperation, and something else, "I... How did the meeting go?"

You push yourself up and flip over so you're staring at the ceiling, "Rather well, all things considered. They were more than happy to take the evidence in exchange for keeping me out of the political fallout".

Her face comes into view, "I thought you were going back to work with them again?"

Was that... concern?

"I thought I was too..." Deciding that this conversation is serious enough, you push yourself up to a sitting position, "I went there to respect the honor of the Genovese. Back in Airgrid, quitting was pretty much unheard of unless it was a euphemism for being shot and left to die in a gutter. So, out of gratitude for them holding up their end of the bargain, I gave them that evidence because it should help them out of a tight spot. And while I didn't get anything material out of the exchange, I'm well and truly in their good books for the time being; that should come in handy at some point even as we stay on the good side of the law. The fact that that bastard is going to get what's coming to him helps as well".

You turn to look her in the eyes, "I've got something good here, and I'd rather not risk that by getting right back into what I tried so hard to get away from. The Genovese are better than most when it comes to underground dealings... But they are who they are, and their work reflects that. I'm enough of a trouble magnet as is," You smile in a self-depreciating manner, "Purposefully getting into trouble doesn't sound like a good idea".

Sierra returns your smile, "That's good to hear, John. Also good to know you're becoming self-aware," There's a bit of a grin to that last statement, and you can tell that she's covering up worry with humor.

She's... cute when she's worried, you admit to yourself. Best to not say that aloud. Yeah, don't say she's cute while worried. Don't say she's cute while worried. Don't s-

"I'm what?"

Snapping out of your reverie, you turn to see Sierra with a bright blush spreading across her face.

"I... said that aloud, didn't I?" You can't help the words from coming out.

The awkwardness of the situation isn't helped by the fact that she just looks at the floor and nods.

There's a very pregnant silence in the air, and you can't seem to find a way to break the tension.

"Well... Uh," You wince at your own words, "It's getting late..."

"Late... Yeah. Yeah!" Sierra seems to pick up on your lifeline and is scrambling up it, "You have work in the morning, right! Right! I'll... Uh... wontkeepyouawakeanymoregoodnight!"

With a flurry of words and movement, the elf is out the door and gone.

"Ughhh," You can't help but groan.

You're sore from all the walking today, but you still need to take off the cloak and the gauntlets. Putting all your gear down onto your room's desk, you crawl under the sheets and almost immediately fall asleep.

> Gonna pause things here for about a hour or so. Gotta make a grocery run then make myself some lunch. I'll be back in a bit.

I'm a shit story teller, but fine standard party, new to the game and stuff and I go fuck it ill make a nice and simple paladin of [insert generic god of healing] only non-standard trait was open-mindedness so instead of doing what a human should have done when seeing a elf or dark elf like be cautious and have a hand on my weapon. I went up and said hi. yeah....... illusions were cast, mind control saves were failed long story short the barbarian died and the healer was cleaved in two by my mindcontroled hands. now coming round into consciousness. the mage was chained up with me in a room made of glass like material, and after trying to escape by tearing my hand from the "glass" shackles, I found they were more akin to diamonds in terms of strength. so we waited. and hiddlde de we meet miss bitch face who runs this scam. she don't like my order, she don't like the mage and she wants us to become here WILLING agents.

no way bitch. then off began the torture. it lasted IC two months. every form of torture barring waterboarding and having parts of me cut off were employed but as a result I lost use of my shield hand. it had to be cut off.

the mage died and I was saved by some stangers hired to find and kill bitch face. [new party] that's how my wide eyed idealist became a visious sadistic killer. I was genuinely angry at the fictional elf, and this apparently made me the best RPer in the group when it came to genuine reactions to things.

and in every game after that in one way or another elfs ruin everything.

your about to escape? hey look elven infiltrators who cant let their exit be discovered.

you just pull of a success ful raid? hey look elves are looking for their [insert captive we just rescued here] and they want to take credit.

>whenever elves pop up bad shit happens.
You should join the campaign I'm running. My players have NO IDEA what they're up against. I've given them plenty of different opportunities and have actively tried to steer them away from their course of action but you know what, they insist on fighting the elves. In their forest. My baseline elves are high level Spriggans on crack.
>>
>>1840020
read this>>1840017

tell your players IC a old legend of the man who went to far, who went near elves and came out a monster that became a minor BBEG for his unending hatred of the elves. and tell them that if they are not careful in the elven forests they might free the monster from its chains where it will wreak its vengeance.

and if they carry on, then let them release the level 27 black guard whose patron is god of hate and sadism. and when they cant kill it, let them know that you put the legend there for a reason.

They've got enough warnings over like... 3 months and 8 sessions I believe. In case any of them are actually in here I don't want to give too much away however, but come this Sunday I'll have stories to tell. I can tell you that we play a Basic Role-playing system which means there are no character levels. They did manage to scrounge up enough cash to buy helmets though, that's gotta count for something.
>>
>>1840060

Fair enough, I suppose. Mind-Control spells are always the height of cheese.

Well, I suppose that it's good that you got into the Character. Remember that IRL game I mentioned a while back? It was great, only problem was that I was the only player with any experience in the system and the other two players were first-timers. It was painfully hard to get the two of them to get into character (My friend being a first time DM probably didn't help).
>>
>>1840077there is where you went wrong, you didn't give them one EXPLICIT IC warning. and when they broke it you didn't unleash the hell you promised.

>>1840084
just give them real emotion and it will happen
>>
>>1840090
No, dude, I did. Once they've got their little dicks stuck in my dungeon I'll tell you just how all of this happened.

>>1840084
I don't use mind control, full stop. Taking away player agency or forcing them to do something they don't want to because the GM says "nuh uh I used a spell so you have to" is the epitome of anti-fun. There are plenty of more fun ways to force characters to act against their will, beliefs and moral code than A Wizard Did It.
>>
>>1840100
no it only lasted 2 turns so about 12 seconds but its enough for a heavy to crush a squishy.

overall the game isn't that unbalanced its just the results that annoy or amaze me
>>
>>1840108
If it's in the rules and the players like it and can roll with the punches that's fine. As long as everyone has fun. I just prefer to avoid no-fun as much as humanely possible and mind-controlling players is a crapshoot at the best of times.
>>
>>1840090

Yeah, I've given my friend a fair amount of advice on how to help them out. Have them introduce themselves IC, make it so that he won't respond to any questions or statements that aren't IC unless it's about the mechanics or systems, etc etc. What doesn't help is that they both picked spellcasters (sorc and bard) as their first PCs ever so I had to spend about 1 1/2 hrs running them through their spells and how spell slots work while my friend was setting everything up.

>>1840100

Yeah, I've given my players some insane challenges. Two good examples were throwing a CR 8 Loup Garou at them when they had a part of 3 level 3 players and having a Halloween special session where they went a crypt to find a team of three adventures that went missing that ended with multi-stage boss rush. Highlights of that include: the entire team screaming after they had to kill two of the three adventures that were turned into zombies only to find two waves of skeletons coming right for them, the paladin nearly killing the first Zombie Dragon that showed up with a Divine Smite Crit, half the party nearly dying when they get hit by the other Zombie Dragon's Breath Attack, and the whole thing ending after killing the third adventurer and shooting the necromancer behind everything between the eyes with a hand crossbow. Sadly, we haven't gotten a chance to continue that campaign (because we've got players from quite literally every corner of the world in it) but I still threaten them with that gauntlet to this day.

I'm actually considering running a full No Magic Allowed campaign at some point in the future. That should make things interesting.

Looking around, it isn't too hard to figure out where the Siege Weapons are set up. Set up somewhere around halfway between the Outer Wall and the Secondary Line, there are these large ramps leading up to large, open circular structures. In place on top of them are the barest outlines of the massive weapons, as they're covered with tarps when not in use or being worked on you assume.

However, a quick check of your surroundings doesn't show you where the broken one is, nor do you really see anyone who screams 'engineer'. There's a few random guards out and about, and checking the Outer Gate you can see the guy who recommended you go take the Competency Tests in the first place.

Might as well head over to the guard from yesterday. He did give you a rather good tip that paid off in spades. So, making your choice, you walk on over.

"Good Morning," He's caught rather flatfooted at your voice, seeing as he nearly fell over.

"You," His groggy mind takes a moment to start up, "You were the Artificer guy right?"

You give him a grin, "That's right. I thought I'd stop by and thank you for the tip you gave me".

Reaching into your pocket, you pull out the three Proofs and clink them together in your fingers.

"Shit..." As expected, he's rather incredulous at the fact that you've got three, "You really weren't joking, huh? Well, that's good I suppose. You find any work with the Daimyo?"

"I have. Actually, that's why I'm here; I could use some directions," You pull out the Contract and show it to him.

"Hmm... Oh. Oooh. You're working on that? Whew..." He looks back up at you, "You really know how to pick 'em, huh? Well, you've got quite the challenge ahead of you. Regardless, you're in the wrong place; you need to head over to the armory back at the Third Wall?"

"Well, now I just feel like an idiot. Mind showing me where to go?"

A few moments of directions later, and you bid the guard good day as you leave.

A lot of backtracking later you find yourself at the Armory; a large, flat building that practically melds into the Third Wall.

Regardless, now you have to find someone to bring you to the broken gun.

Entering, the entire building is a rather quiet affair. Most soldiers are probably nursing hangovers at this hour.

It's in this silence that you can easily here someone yelling further inside. Passing through the doorway and into the halls, the voices become more distinct. And, familiar?

"MY REPUTATION?! What about it!?"

"Naofumi! What a coincidence! Good to see you in good health," You really can't help the shit eating grin on your face, "I heard someone really shot the shit out of your poor train; ran off with the Caboose too? That's a real shame".

If he wasn't pissed off before, he is now, "You... Grr... What the hell are you doing here anyways?!"

"I'm here for work," You peak over at the cleric who just looks extremely uncomfortable at the situation, "I see you're bullying the youth again".

"This little shit," He scoffs at the young man who cowers again, "Told me that I'm not allowed to perform this contract because I "Have a history of breaking every piece of magitech I touch"".

"Well," You can't resist twisting the knife, "That's because you do".

Naofumi's about to rage at you again, when the desk monkey apparently finds his balls, "Umm... If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing here? Civilians aren't allowed..."

"Oh, I'm no civilian," You show him your Proofs, "As for why I'm here..."

"I'm here to fix that Siege Weapon," You calmly respond.

"Oh, good good," He looks frazzled for a second, flipping through a few piles of paperwork before grabbing what looks like a set of blueprints, "Here, you're really going to need this. The room you're looking for Armory 1C down the hall and on your right".

"Thanks man," You accept the paperwork, "Well, Naofumi, guess I'll be seeing you around".

"Yeah, yeah," He waves you off, "We'll have to talk later".

Walking in the correct direction, you can't help but look over the blueprints that were given to you. The gun, for a very liberal definition of 'gun', was a massive piece. Designated for Siege Break and High Priority Long Range Takedowns, the entire weapon was a marvel of upscale Clockwork technology and integrated Magitech targeting systems. You really, really have to resist the urge to drool over the fact that you're going to be working on something this intricate.

Opening the door to Armory 1C, you walk onto a catwalk over a rather large, open space cut right into the earth. Looking down, you can see the Siege Weapon. Or rather, you can see what's left. The general frame is there, along with the barrel, and the wheels. But, when they said repair, they weren't joking. The entirety of the Clockwork mechanism is lying in a pile of scrap off to the side as someone rather smartly removed the destroyed machinery before transporting the piece back here.

This... is going to take some serious work.

> That's where I'm going to put things on pause for now. I'm going to be busy for the remainder of the night. We'll get to the job at hand tomorrow. I'll see you all then.

Dread Knight Quest:

Finding the stairs, you make your way down onto the main floor and approach the poor, damaged Siege Weapon.

A few of the crates in the room are open and you note quite a number of spare parts for the Clockwork machinery. That's good, should cut out the need for ordering what you need.

Someone's left out a table, so you grab that and pull it over next to the weapon. Pulling out your tools and blueprints and set them down.

Well, this is going to take a while.

The question is what to start with?

You suppose you should start with what is in front of you. Grabbing the blueprints and your screwdriver, you begin by taking a walk around the weapon.

From what you can tell, the rest of the framework, the wheels, and the barrel are all completely undamaged, which is very, very good.

Deciding to get down to the damage, you look back and forth between the opening and the blueprints. You can get an impression of how the entire thing functions from the papers alone, and seeing where everything comes together definitely helps that. Making sure to look closely, you can't find any signs of internal damage or cracks.

Pulling yourself out of the opening, you set the blueprints and your screwdriver back down.

Now what?

All things considered, you should really get over the pile of scrap that was removed initially.

It's... well, it's a pile of broken scrap metal and fragments of Clockwork Machinery. In some regards, it's rather impressive that this was the only damage done considering just how extensive it was.

Your luck holds, somehow, as you find and identify several major mechanisms that are still partially intact. Referencing the blueprints a few times, you get a rather good idea on how everything was supposed to go together.

Which brings you to your next course of action: making sure you had everything you needed to build and repair the Clockwork machinery.

Heading over to where the spare parts are, you rifle through things for a while before you find what you need. Thankfully, while they weren't able to actually do the repairs, someone was smart enough to create spare parts of every bit of Clockwork machinery in the mechanism.

It takes a bit of effort on your part, but you manage to push a box of Clockwork gears, all the screws and bolts you'll ever need, and plenty of metal to create the framework over to your makeshift worktable.

You've got pretty much everything you'll need to get to work with you.

This'll definitely be a challenge, seeing as this is easily the largest piece you've worked on to date. However, that doesn't mean you'll handle it any different.

First come first, you start laying out the beginnings of the framework. Using a measuring tape from your tool box and a spare bit of chalk you found in one of the crates, you begin making out the lengths of the frame in preparation for cutting.

You will have to make a choice...

"Oh, there you are John".

A voice from above on the catwalk calls out, neatly taking your attention. The owner of the voice is...

"Sun Woo, what a pleasant surprise," You are a bit surprised that he's down here as earlier as he is.

He takes the stairs at a calm pace, approaching your little work area.

You give him a polite bow as he walks up, which he laughs a bit at, "There's no need for formalities right now, we're alone at the moment".

"Alright," You shrug. If he didn't want you to be formal it wasn't a problem for you.

He's not entirely paying attention to you at the moment, just looking over what you've done so far.

Anything you'd like to say?

>>1842162

"Quite the mess, huh?" You observe, just saying anything to fill the gap in the silence.

"You don't even know the half of it," He half-chuckles, turning back to you, "We were lucky that the storm didn't do more damage than it did, and yet... certain individuals... are making quite the big deal of it. Don't get me started on dealing with the Guilds that tried to reserve the contract despite not having the personnel on hand to complete it".

"Sounds rough," You're just glad you're not involved in all that, "I'm just surprised that you don't have someone already on hand to deal with repairs like this. I'm sure you run drills and the like, so you'll need to account for normal wear and tear".

He just hums thoughtfully, "That makes sense, and you'd think that'd be the case. Unfortunately, reality doesn't quite work that way. As for drills, yes we do have them. None are on the schedule for today. Though, assuming you'll work as fast I think you do, there might be one later on..."

Well, that definitely doesn't help the pressure. Thinking on your feet, you try to change the conversation to something else, "Thinking back, you mentioned that your son was an artificer too? It'd be interesting to talk to him about it if he was".

"Oh, my apologies, I suppose I misspoke. He's got several Proofs, and I'm proud of him for them, but unfortunately I don't think he quite has the patience for your field of work. He's an incredibly bright child, a bit younger than you I believe, but he is quite hot-headed. Meeting him..." Sun Woo thinks on it for a bit, "Perhaps. It should be interesting for him to meet someone smarter than him, even if its only in certain areas. I'll let you know if he agrees".

"Sounds good to me".

Sensing that the conversation is over, you turn around and start organizing your tools and material.

"John," You look over your shoulder at him as he watches on curiously, "If it's not too rude of me, do you mind if I watch you work?"

It's not entirely like you minded, but...

It feels good using your Multitool once again. Cutting the metal bars into the framework is smooth as can be, the iron being easily parted by the Cutting Torch function.

Just to make sure, you double check all your prep work by piecing things together by hand and double checking your measurements. Thankfully, everything checks out.

Switching over to the welder function, you slid on a pair of safety googles and get to work. It's slow going, but thanks to that you don't make a single mistake. Soon enough you've got the entire framework done with.

You don't bother looking back at Sun Woo, lost entirely in your work.

It's going to be tricky, but unfortunately you'll have to assemble all the Clockwork Machinery after attaching the framework to the Siege Weapon. Thankfully, that's not very hard as it's easy to figure out where the original went on the frame.

Grabbing the needed pieces, you slide onto your back and hop to it.

Your prior experience with Clockwork weapons really comes into play as you assemble the entire mechanism. It's rather different from what you worked on with the rifles, with how upscaling works and all, but it still helps.

You lose track of time almost immediately, but you manage to not lose track of what you're working on despite the intricacies of it.

Eventually, you close everything up and pull yourself out from under the Siege Weapon. Dragging yourself to your feet, you wipe the sweat from your brow and turn around to regard Sun Woo.

Wow, you've been here for a while now. It's almost noon by this point. This really did take a while.

Regardless, you might as well see how you did, "So, how's it look?"

"Well," He gives the framework a few experimental pulls, "I won't claim to be an expert, but from what I can tell it's sturdily put together; which considering the previous condition is quite the improvement. We'll really know if it works or not after a test run".

That really catches your attention. A chance to see this beauty in action...

Wiping the drool away, you ask a rather obvious question, "Can we do that? Soon?"

Sun Woo looks a bit surprised at your rather child-like display. He takes it in stride with a slight laugh, "Unfortunately, not today. The artillerymen assigned to this piece were given a temporary assignment for the week; we can't have soldiers idling around. Remember that we didn't even know you existed until yesterday".

That's rather disappointing...

"I suppose that their temporary assignment could be cancelled now that they need to test fire this particular Siege Weapon..." He trails off there, pretending to think for a moment, "I can send you a message for when the test firing is scheduled; I could bring you in as an observer, if you'd like".

"Yes please," Is your immediate response. You really, really wouldn't want to miss this.

"That's good," He smiles at you once more, "I can't speak for the others, but I'd be glad to have you. Thank you for your work, John. I'll let the office know to give you part of the payment for your work; you can expect the rest once we know the weapon is operational".

"I have a few other things to attend to here. Good day to you John".

"Good day Sun Woo"

And there he goes...

I try to avoid the 'everyone is a mage' thing that a lot of fantasy stories end up going when you have a spell and sword type setting.

To be fair, you guys have successfully avoided violent confrontation with pretty much every mage in the story thus far.
Sierra: befriended (waifu'd?)
Bishop: negotiated
Archmage: didn't do something extremely stupid during the Genovese meet up
Gang Ryong: talked it out; not really a mage but he's basically a walking nuke so it kinda counts

We'll have to see what the future holds.

Well, while you're here, you might as well take a look around the Armory.

Maybe you can find Naofumi, and maybe you'll be able to find the scrap room.

Doing the rather obvious choice first, you leave the room you're in and head back to where the cleric was. He's gone now, unfortunately, so you can't just ask him where everything is. You can't seem to find Naofumi either.

After a few moments, you decide to take a look around and tour a bit. Keeping an eye out for Naofumi, you walk around the fortified structure taking note of what halls lead to what and such.

Thankfully, you manage to keep track of where you are, and better yet you find a single, rather inconspicuous door simply labeled 'Scrap'.

You can't help the smile that comes to your face.

Taking a look around to make sure that there's no one around, you open the door and slip inside.

As expected, the room is pretty much wall to wall junk. Remembering prior experience, you begin shifting through it to see what you can find.

It takes you quite some time to comb your way through the entirety of the room. As expected, you find scrap, scrap, and on the side a bit more scrap.

Looks like whatever was salvageable or valuable was already removed.

With a slight degree of disappointment, you leave the room and dust yourself; trying to make it look like you hadn't just spent the last hour or so pushing around scrap.

So, picking a direction, you go off on your way. Walking around the Armory, you don't find any sign of the train engineer. You do manage to run into the cleric, who informs you that Naofumi left a few hours ago before running off to do something or the other.

Checking the time, it's now well into the afternoon. Without anything else to do, you leave the Armory.

It's a nice enough day, the same as before. Looks like the local rough and ramble are out to play in the sun today. You get quite the number of looks as you head through the Earth District looking for a semi-respectable place to eat.

Thankfully, you're still openly carrying your broadsword, and that makes the knife-wielding muggers change their mind when it comes to targeting you.

Eventually, you find a place that look like you won't get food poisoning from eating there. Walking on in, you find a rather nice bar that luckily serves lunch as well. Up in the front, there's a few groups of workers talking and laughing during their break. Your gaze turns to the far side of the bar and you find someone you weren't really expecting.

Gladiator is there, with a few empty bottles of beer next to him. He doesn't exactly look too pleased.

You're fairly certain that you didn't just walk into a Genovese-run bar, so Gladiator's presence here is simply curious and not concerning.

Walking over, you slide into a bar stool nearby. He reacts to the noise you make, a rather harsh look on his face. It softens when he see you, and he returns your nod of acknowledgment. As he's turning back to his drink, you do notice that he's got a bandage right above his collar bone. Guess he didn't have a very good night.

Ordering something to eat and drink that totals up to five copper, you relax and look over the shelves of bottles on display to kill some time.

Eventually, you get your food and dig in. It's alright, as bar food goes, though it definitely tastes like something you've paid 5 copper for.

Maybe halfway through your meal, someone else enters in and walks over to Gladiator. You can't make out exactly what is being said, but the warrior's hushed and harsh tone tells you pretty much all you need to know.

You're not entirely sure if this is apart of whatever the Genovese are doing with your evidence, or if this is due to something entirely on its own, but still; seems like they're planning on something happening soon enough.

The other man leaves soon after they're done talking. You're in the middle of cleaning your plate and emptying your mug when Gladiator sits down right next to you.

"Hey, John," His tone is casual, though still kinda hushed, "Mind if I ask you about something?"

"Sure," Your voice is low enough to match his, "Let's hear it".

It's slight, but you can tell that Gladiator's relieved at your words as his entire body posture shifts.

"Good. Now," He drinks some more of his beer, "I know you're not interesting in workin' at your old position, but people in your line of work aren't easy to come by out here. I'll put it to you straight, if you're interested there's a contract job I'd like you to do".

"Over or under the table?" Is your first question.

"Over," Is his immediate response, "On paper, you'd be on the books as an independent asset working for the Genovese Mercantile Company. The job itself isn't anything really shady either: a Ruin Dive. A few Scouts of ours found a new section of a rather well combed area. They're good guys, left the place as is after marking the entrance site, and reported it to us".

"And you couldn't have gone to one of the Guilds for an Artificer?" You finish off your drink after speaking.

Gladiator just snorts in amusement, "And risk having to share the site after they sell off the information? We'd rather keep this find to ourselves; whether it's a gold mine or a shit hole it's not good for business when you have to fight over every last scrap".

It's a rather tempting offer, if you're being honest. For what you want to do, you're going to need enough money to get off the ground. Still, can't hurt to be cautious.

"Who else is going?"

"Archmage, surprisingly enough," He rolls his eyes, "Whatever 'Rune' you showed him really got his attention; he wants to go down to make sure there's not anything similar in the Ruin".

"Anyone else?" Considering your initial impression of him, you are a bit surprised that mage wants to come on a Dive.

His expression goes a bit more neutral, "Normally, I'd send one of my better guys in as an escort. Unfortunately, I'm a bit strapped for manpower at the moment. However, we managed to get someone from the Airgrid Branch transferred over. We wanted him around to help bolster security before we got your evidence. Since it looks like we won't quite need him as badly, he'll be joining you two".

You think about things for a moment, "Do you know anything about the guy?"

"Other than he's loyal and on rather high recommendation from Airgrid? Not much. He's supposedly very good at his job, if the amount of fuss we got after requesting him is anything to go by".

Gladiator trails off here, looking at you expectantly. Guess he's all out of information.

All that's left is your choice:
> "Yeah, I'll do it"
> "What're the terms of the contract? Pay, reward, that sort of thing?"
> "Sorry, can't do"
>>

"I'm interested," You slowly start, "I have to ask what the terms of the contract actually are before I agree to anything, however".

"Fair enough," Gladiator nods to you, "That's a good attitude to have. Unfortunately, I don't actually have the contract. Hell, you're not really supposed to know about this until tomorrow. But, I figured that since we ran into one another anyways, I'd let you know what's coming up. Two O'Clock, tomorrow, 'The First Step' Bar in the Water District. That's the meeting spot; the guy from Airgrid is gonna be there with your contract. Archmage and him are getting paid through the Syndicate side of things, so they're already done with".

"That's fine with me, I guess," You nod, "I'll discuss the contract with him then. Do you guys mind if I bring anyone along with me?"

He looks to consider it for a moment, "I imagine you're talking about the two folks you traveled with. Normally, we don't exactly allow that kind of thing. But, if you're willing to take responsibility, I don't think Archmage is going to care for extra help. However, payment would be between you and your friend; the coin would be coming out of your pocket".

You nod again, "That's fair. Any idea if I'll be able to take any Magitech out of this Ruin?"

"You'll have to talk to the guy," Gladiator just gives you a shrug, "I'll see you around, John".

He gets back up and walks back to his corner to drink. He... looks a bit better than he did before, surprisingly.

Finished with your meal and your tab, you head out of the bar and back onto the streets.

The mugger looks from side to side, clearly reevaluating his options. After a moment, he growls in frustration and runs off; not before spitting in your direction.

Going on your way, you sheath your sword and ignore the crowd that your altercation drew in. Another few streets, and you're finally in the Fire District.

You really should see Godo at some point to talk to him about your training.

Asking the cleric about it, you're given a curt response that the dwarf smithy won't be available until the end of the week. Apparently, they've got him on a work order or something of the sort.

Checking the time, it's now about 3 O'Clock. Hmm... maybe you should see if you can't find Sierra' Brother, or failing that his bar: 'Eden Hall'.

The elf mentioned that it was located in the Water District somewhere, so you head on your way over there to see what you can find.

Making your way over to the Water District, you take your time as you enjoy your walk.

Things are rather calm today, a rather stark contrast to how it was the previous night. The streets are relatively empty, the few people that are walking about are all going their own way.

You don't spot anyone who's from any of the mafia families, which is good you suppose.

And then, as if it was some stroke of luck, it turns out that you walked right to your destination.

Eden Hall Bar, nothing at all to look at from the outside. Still, it's good that you found it. Unfortunately, it's not going to be open until 6 pm so you can't stop in right now.

Taking a look around, you don't see Sierra or a male elf who resembles her either.

Now what?

You really don't have much else to do at this point, so you settle on wandering around for a while. You're not hungry, since you ate not too long ago, and you can't get a drink since the bar's not open yet.

Actually, now that you look at it closer, there's a note stating that they won't be opening tonight at all. Huh, wonder what that's about?

Regardless, you start aimlessly wandering the Water District. Like you first heard about, it's Shirahoro's main port and industrial area. Deciding on it, you head down to the water front.

At this point, the docks are rather quiet with most of the traffic either already gone out or already back in at this point in time. The ships that are in are all large, wooden cutters; very similar to what you used to see back in Airgrid.

Still, you enjoy the nice quiet. You forgot how much you missed being just out here on your own.

After some amount of time, you check your Gauntlet to find that it's almost 7 pm now.

You should probably be getting back; where to now?

It's late enough at this point, might as well head back to the Inn. Don't think you're going to get anything else done tonight.

So, you turn around on your heel and leave the waterside area.

The sun's going down at this point, and a few blocks away from the Earth District it goes down below the horizon.

More people are now coming out to enjoy the evening air. Navigating the crowds, you make good time back to the Dragon's Lair.

Entering inside, you see Gang Ryong and Goo Hwi chatting at a table. You don't see Sierra, strangely enough.

Walking over, you order some food before walking over to the table and taking a seat.

"I did, yes," The old man nods, "It's been such a long time since I've been in such a large city. Walking around is a very interesting experience".

"I was here all day," Ryong just shrugs, "What were you up to John?"

Your food arrives at this point, so you respond between bites, "I was doing a contract for the Daimyo; fixing up some equipment".

You shrug, "I had to rebuild most of it, though I don't know if it'll work yet. There's gonna be a test sometime soon; I'll know then".

The three of you chew on your food for a bit. Thinking about it, they might know where your elf friend is.

"Either of you wouldn't happen to know where Sierra is?" You ask.

Goo Hwi finishes his food before responding, "I ran into her around lunch time. She said she was going to stay with her brother for a bit and catch up on a few things. Didn't say when she'd be back, but it'll probably be a few days".

"I see," You push a bit of what's left on your plate around, "Reminds me, I'm probably going to be gone for a few days. I got asked to go do a Ruin Dive; gonna be meeting up with the group tomorrow and iron out the contract".

"I didn't realize you were an adventurer. John," Gang Ryong looks mildly interested.

"It's a good way to find new magitech to mess around with," You shovel some more food into your mouth.

Goo Hwi scratches his chin, "Sounds like we'll all be busy in these coming days".

"What are you two up to?" You can't help but question.

"Well," Ryong starts, "I've managed to get tomorrow off, so we'll be heading over to pay respects to my master".

"Gotcha," You just nod, finishing up your food.

"John Hoelscher? Is there a John Hoelscher here?" Turning around, there's a fairly plain looking man at the doorway to the restaurant.

"That's me," You speak up, moving up to him.

He looks over at you, "I have a message for you".

Handing over a simple white envelope, the man bids you good night and leaves.

Making it to your room, you place your belongings on the floor and open up the message.

> To John Hoelscher

> You are invited to join me as an observer to the testing of the Heavy Clockwork Siege Weapon by the Shirahoro Daimyo.
> Testing will begin at 0800 this coming morning.

Yeah, thinking about it, you should really handle cleaning your spare clothes now rather than later.

So, grabbing your laundry, you head out to find the washroom.

It takes you no time at all to find it. It's a rather small affair. The staff of the inn probably have their own that they use.

Heading in, you find the place predictably empty for how early in the morning you are. Grabbing a basin and a scrub brush, you get to work.

You're not exactly good at it, but this isn't the first time you've washed your clothes by hand so you do well enough to get the job done.

Leaving the spare pair in your room to dry, you take a quick stop by the front to grab some breakfast to go and head to the outskirts of the city.

Hmm... Guess they're coming for the testing.

Making your way to between the Outer and the Second Wall, you find a few guards out and about coordinating with a few differently armored soldiers. The Siege Weapon you repaired is being moved up by a team of artillery men up a ramp to the circular rampart that was empty the previous day.

Taking a look around, you don't see Sun Woo yet. Perhaps he isn't here yet, or maybe he's somewhere else preparing for the event.

Looking around, you note that there's already a few people set up on the Second Wall, and a few guards making sure they don't wander off.

Guess that's where you're supposed to be. Walking over, a few quick words with a nearby guard confirms your assumption, and you head up to the viewing area.

It's a nice view, but you can't exactly make out much. The artillerymen don't seem to be having any issues, which is good, as they go over the Siege Weapon during their own preparations. Other than that, there really isn't anything to see.

You just idly stare out into the scenery for a bit. So you nearly jump out of your own skin when someone speaks up.

"John, it's good to see you made it," Sun Woo apparently walked up right next to you without notice. He just smiles at your reaction, "Good morning".

"Y-yeah," You grimace slightly, "Good morning, sir".

"Everything's going well thus far," He nods out to the flurry of activity taking place as more people have arrived, "We should be right on schedule".

"Hmm..." Sun Woo thinks on it for a bit, "Anything that we could use is in use; we don't exactly have the resources to get rid of anything in working condition. I'll see if something comes up, however, and I'll let you know if something does".

You can't really ask for more than that, "Alright, thanks a lot".

"Anything else you'd like to ask," For some reason, you figure he's probably trying to kill time while you wait.

"Actually," There is something else you want to ask about, "A bit further down the line, I might look into buying some property. I've been considering settling down here for the conceivable future and I'd like to have a workshop and potentially a store of sorts to work out of".

"It won't be cheep, I can tell you right now," His face is a bit more serious, "I could refer you to people more in that line of work, if and when you're serious about buying. Unless, of course, you'd like to work closely with the Daimyo, that wouldn't really be within my jurisdiction".

Sun Woo does seem like good people, though, so he has that going for him, and even if it won't be cheap, somebody of John's talents should be able to gather up the dosh. You let the conversation end there, simply enjoying the early morning breeze.

Without thinking about it, you start tapping your finger; nervous energy spilling out without your knowledge. You can feel time coming.

The flurry of activity comes together, all except for the artillery crew backing away from the Siege Weapon.

Then, right as your Gauntlet tells you it's 8 am, the test begins.

With no ceremony, the artillery team springs into action. Just as you envisioned it, the entire mechanism slides and locks open to allow for one of the men to load a training shell as he squad mate passes it to him. The mechanism closes back up and slides smoothly into firing position.

The squad lead shouts clear and, as the man pulls the firing cord, the Siege Weapon fires with a roar. You can help the grin on your face as you can feel the vibrations of the ground under your feet.

The Test was a success.

The crowd cheers lightly at the showing, the artillerymen working to set the weapon in place and cover it.

Sun Woo smiles at you and you can't help but return it.

Bidding Sun Woo goodbye for now, you decide to wander about the city until you've got to meet up with your contact.

Thinking about it, you should really take advantage of the fact that you're in the middle of a city and see what they're selling. Setting off, you start wandering about the different Districts.

Well, the ones that you can. You're actually barred entrance to the Wind District; apparently you need to be either apart of the nobility or need to have express permission. Oh well.

It takes you some time to make your way through the Earth District Marketplace, though you're rather disappointed. It's mostly a market for food items and the like; not much in the way of technology.

The Fire District is a bit better, as you can easily find shops for weapons, armor, and the like. Nothing for Magitech unfortunately.

The Water District doesn't actually have a market, as pretty much anything going through the port has already been purchased in advance.

Still, despite not finding anything too good, you now know where it all is. Checking your time, it's almost noon.

What now?

There's really nothing else for you to do.

So, grabbing some cheap lunch, you decide to just wait it out.

In no time at all, you're heading over to the bar for the meet up.

'The First Step' is a pretty nondescript place, that kind of shoddy exterior that you'd expect from a place people who don't want to be seen at.

Walking inside, the bartender looks at you for a moment, nods, and then walks to the back room.

That's... concerning. Uh...

Trying not to worry too much, you head over to the bar and take a seat.

...

There's a few moments of quiet, before you can here the door to the front of the bar open up.

...

A few footsteps. Then a voice.

"Well, well, well," A definitely male voice calls out, "If it isn't the little lamb who ran away".

A few more footsteps to you.

The words chill you for a moment, but then you recognize that voice. The tone, the inflection, even the joking words edged with an unspoken threat.

Yeah, you know who this is.

"Huh, I don't recognize you," You drawl out, "Oh wait, now I remember. If it isn't the Genovese Family dog. What's the matter?" You turn around and stand up to face the man behind you, "You here to show me a new trick?"

He walks right up to you, and you make sure that he doesn't have to take the last few steps as you do the exact same. His dark, hazel eyes borrow straight into your cold, blue ones.

There's a moment of tense quiet, his fingers twitching at his side and your hand firmly on the grip of your sword.

Then, as one, the two of you crack into smiles.

"John!"

"Dutch!"

The two of you exchange a handshake that you both turn into a quick hug.

"Didn't think I'd be seeing you here, John," Dutch says with a grin, sitting down next to you at the bar, "You said you were going off into the Badlands; was fairly certain you weren't gonna be showin' your face around for a long time".

Dutch just laughs as he leans over the bar counter and snags a bottle of whiskey, "No shit? Sounds like you've got a story behind that?"

You do, although...

Dutch's probably your closest friend. You knew him back in Westmire, he dragged your corpse out of that city, the two of you got through Airgird together, and he helped you get out of the Syndicate. You feel comfortable telling him about what happened.

Place was fine other than the general shittyness. That all went to hell when I went on a Ruin Dive"

Dutch looks rather intently at you.

"There was some kind of double triple cross bullshit between some bandits and the town's guard. All of that didn't mean jack when the Blight showed up and just fucked everything up. I got the hell out of there as fast as I could".

"No shit?" He clinks your shot glass against yours, and the two of you down your drinks.

"Gah, I wish it ended there," You feel the whiskey burn down your throat, "One of my companions managed to get us a train ride here. Sounded great at first; I was working alongside the Head Engineer to keep the whole thing runnin'. That all went to hell after I found out that there was a conspiracy to kill the three of us. And guess who was the eggman behind it all?" You just trail off there, a hint of sarcasm in your voice.

"Gambino, motherfucker," He pours the next shots, "Hey, you know who shot the shit out of his train?"

You can't help but laugh, "I did".

"Seriously?"

"Fuck yeah"

The two of you laugh and take your next shots.

"Enough about me," You look him directly in the eye, "What have you been up to in Airgrid since I've been gone?"

"Eh, same shit, different shitter," Dutch shrugs, "Streets of gangs, drug dealers, and kidnappers. Half of our suppliers try to rip us off, the ones that don't are about as consistent as a bunch of rocks. Nothing's changed".

"I figured," You nod to him as the two of you get ready for the next round, "So, what brings you to Shirahoro?"

He laughs, "They said something about bolstering the forces here for when the Gambino's tried something. Doesn't sound exactly like we'll entirely need it now that you've got an taken the wind out of his sails".

"Fair enough," You two take your third round. You're definitely starting to feel it now, so it might be time to get down to business, "I hate to cut the good time short, but you wouldn't happen to have a contract for me?"

"Bah," He wipes away a bit of whiskey from his lips, "You were always the killjoy of the two of us".

Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out some papers, "You're a lucky fuck, you know that?"

"Why's that?" You take the papers and start looking them over.

"Because you've always had the devil's luck"

Oh, that's what he means...

The contract... or rather, the pay, is rather generous. Two gold coins and a single piece of tech, in exchange for technical expertise and discretion while exploring the Ruin. Looking it, the wording is surprisingly straightforward; no loopholes for either side or funny clauses that could screw you over.

You response?

Just to make sure, you double check the clauses and the fine print.

There's the usual bit, signer will use his skills to the best of his abilities to aid his party members, signer will not purposefully put his party members in danger, yadda yadda. Again, things look to be in order all around. The most damning clause really is the discretion one, with leaking the location and contents of the Ruin before it has been properly explored and excavated is cause for full annulment of the contract.

Sighing to yourself, you place the paper on the bar counter and turn to Dutch.

"You got something I can sign with?"

His grin is absolutely massive, "Atta boy!" He grabs a quill and ink from behind the bar counter and hands it over to you.

Giving everything one last look over, you sign your name along the dotted line.

"Anything else?" You ask, handing the paper back over to him.

Shaking his head, Dutch takes the contract back, "Nope. We're just waiting on Archmage to show up now".

And a few minutes of light conversation later, the mage himself enters into the bar.

"I trust you two aren't too drunk to walk," He says, looking over the two of you.

Dutch laughs, "I don't know about light weight over here," He slaps you on the back, "But I'm fine".

"I'm fine," You say, slinging your pack over your shoulder.

"Good," Archmage nods, "Alright, we're leaving within the hour; if you have any business to do, do so now".

You've already got all of your gear on you.

The boat in question was a rather simple affair, the kind that most merchant groups used as a cargo runner.

The 'cargo', however, this time was you and your little team. Thankfully you were mostly unaffected by seasickness, though walking around was a bit of a pain.

Currently, you find yourself down in the hold of the ship. You've left the Port of Shirahoro maybe an hour ago. It'll be another five or six before you get to your drop off point.

Putting all your belongings away again and leaving your pack off on the side, you head up to the upper deck.

The ship is mostly quiet, as you can imagine that there is little to do after the ship has left port. Up top is also rather empty, a few men milling about. It's not to hard to find Dutch, the lanky man leaning over the railing in boredom.

"Hey Dutch," You say as you walk up beside him.

His head perks up at your voice, "Yo, John".

Now that the two of you are outside in the light, and you've got a moment free, you finally get a good look at your old friend.

Not much has changed in the last four, almost five, months. He looks about the same, his mixed blood heritage giving him a good mix of features. That cocksure grin of his graces his face and his dark, hazel eyes have a playful hint to them.

There's a set of Leather Armor on him, the light armor over his chest lies underneath a strange, cloak-like throw-over. On each side of Dutch's waist rest a pair of revolvers.

You can't help but raise an eyebrow at the sight, "Seriously, Dutch, you're still using those antiques?"

"Hey!" He plays along, faux outrage on his face, "Don't insult my babies like that!"

The two of you grin like idiots. In his defense, he really is good with those guns of his.

You've never brought it up to him, but you know that the events of Westmire hit him just as hard as they hit you; after all, he was there when you got that scar of yours. During those first, brittle days after you recovered from your coma you threw yourself into Engineering, Magitech, anything you could get your hands on; that's when you began to become an Artificer. Dutch did the same, only with guns; he couldn't build them, but goddamn could he shoot with them.

He just snorts, "And squander all my practice? Not a fat chance in hell, Johnny boy".

Yeah, you imagine he probably wouldn't want to give up those weapons especially with how effective they are. Maybe, with some serious practice, you could make something a bit more specialized...

"What a hard ass," Rolling your eyes at your friend, you turn back and look out to the open sea, "You mind if I upgrade your armor before we go on that Dive?"

"Sure," He joins you in looking over the water, "Just try not to ruin my gear; I paid good money on this armor".

There's a comfortable silence between the two of you, as you both enjoy the salt water breeze.

Sighing to yourself, you push away from the railing slightly, "You got any thoughts on this Dive of ours coming up, Dutch?"

"Gods, you can just never enjoy the moment can you?" He looks a bit odd...

And yet, in this brief moment you can see concern and worry flash across his face even as he tried to play things off, you've never seen him like this before.

No, actually, during the Fall of Westmire... When the two of you were escaping, when you got jumped and scarred; the look on his face then, the absolute horror... But, that was just the nightmares screwing with your memories, right?

"Bah," He continues, breaking you out of your moment of thought, "I know the area we're going to. It's pretty well combed over; shouldn't have any issues while we're gettin' there".

Dutch looks fine, grinning at you like always. You wish you could believe that he was.
