In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

With the transport aircraft busy taking agents to the Talon strike in India, getting down from the volcano proved to be a lot more difficult than getting up it in the first place.

You remember staggering through rocky badlands, ash and smog clogging the sky, down the long, shallow slope of Kilimanjaro, for what must have been hours. The burns on your back made walking painful, but Mei tirelessly supported your weight and encouraged you the whole time, talking about what a great thing the two of you had done by moderating the extent of the eruption, how many people and towns you'd saved, how much wild habitat would survive now.

Finally you heard a car horn honking in the distance, and saw a civilian hovercar climbing the slopes below you. Mercy was in the passenger seat, and her healing stream quickly assauged some of the pain from your volcanic scorch. With Mei's help, she dragged you out of the compromised environmental suit and into a sitting position against a rock.

Mercy gently touched your cheek. "Stay with me, Logan. How do you feel?"

"Like I was hit by a volcano."

"We should have you back to the base soon enough. For now, this will help." She took a step back and activated her Caduceus staff. The yellow healing beam flowed around you like sunlight, melting the pain of your burns, and you sighed with relief as the biotics did their work.

"What's the status in India?" you asked Mercy.

"Our teams are still in transit," she said. "Reports say that Talon and the Junkers have come to a standoff with Vishkar corporate security forces."

And Overwatch is sending an undermanned squad in there, to get in the middle of this. The Shimada brothers can take care of themselves, but maybe McCree, and especially Reinhardt, might get it in their heads to do something brave and suicidal.

Well. If you remember right, you told them that their mission is only to do what they can. You'll just have to trust them not to get themselves killed.

The driver of the hovercar that brought Mercy is an ordinary Tanzanian citizen who she'd convinced to help. He told you that he could provide transport to a nearby airfield, where he claimed to know a pilot sympathetic to your cause. Having sent both your air transports to India, you weren't in a position to find an alternative, so you:

>Travelled to the airfield, and asked the pilot to take you to Portugal, where you made your way to the Watchpoint.
>Travelled to the airfield, and asked the pilot to take you to India, where you made your way to the battle.
>Thanked him and declined, not wanting to endanger another citizen. You waited for the action to die down, and the transports to be available.

"We should head back to the Watchpoint," Mercy says quietly. "The battle will surely long be over by the time we arrived in a civilian craft. And you need medical attention. The best thing you can do for the team right now is keep yourself out of further danger."

Part of you wants to argue, but in the end you agree. Mei gets her own environment suit off, loads both into the hovercar's trunk, and helps back you into the backseat. Mercy gets into the passenger seat, and the civilian, who introduces himself as William, puts the car into motion. He swings by the area that Mercy tells you was Winston's search zone, and you rendevous with the gorilla, who is delighted to see you and Mei alive, if not entirely hale.

The car is a cramped fit with Winston inside as well, but you manage. William, familiar with this area, begins the long journey back down the ashen mountainside, and through a winding path through the savannah. Smoke from the eruption is still spreading across the sky in all directions.

After some time driving, you make it to a small airfield: really just some tracks of packed earth in the ground and a small hut for a control tower. But there's a perfectly serviceable cargo plane, large enough to fit three human passengers and one gorilla, and even the hazmat suits. There's also a local pilot who swears that he will help you, no questions asked or payment required. "The old team saved my father's life when I was a child," he says. "This is the least I can do to repay that."

Mercy asks him, "If I might inquire about the speed of your craft, Mr--?"

"Kigoda," he says. "I doubt my plane is as fast your transports, but she will get you to Europe."

The four of you board the airplane -- Winston doesn't fit into a seat, unfortunately for him, and he has to make do with the cargo area -- and soon Kigoda takes off. He flies low at first, under the ash cloud, but eventually the plane outpaces it, and rises into the blue sky.

You twist to look out the window at the cloud behind you. Hard to imagine how much of Africa this will cover. Their farming technology is sophisticated, but you're not sure if it's up to handling something like this.

Overwatch did what it could. You mitigated the disaster, even if it couldn't be stopped. You'll have to be satisfied with that.

You mute your helmet for a few minutes. "Athena, can you hear me?"

"Connection established. I can hear you, Seeker."

"How are things going in Mumbai? Has the team landed?"

"They will arrive soon, Seeker," Athena says. She flashes you a few maps of the local area in the city. "The situation is confused, but Junker activity is confirmed."

"By "junker activity" do you mean blowing up everything they see?"

"Correct." Athena shows a video she's snatched from the web, a shaky civilian video from the crowded streets of Mumbai, crowds of people running in panic in the background. Junkrat laughs maniacally as he launches grenades seemingly at random, the ominous hulk of Roadhog looming nearby. When the masked giant turns to face the camera, it falls as the holder drops it and runs.

"Reports also indicate that Talon operatives have taken civilian hostages in a nearby coffee house," she says, displaying one of the ubiquitous Kofi Aromo coffee shops. "And Vishkar comm traffic indicates a Talon assault in a nearby corporate facility. I believe our team is only strong enough to focus on one or two of these situations, Seeker."

I propose Hanzo and Rein for the hostage and McCree and Genji for the building

Hanzo's sonar arrow is prefect for scouting out position of the hostage taker and Rein's shield is good for protecting them.

So Genji and Mcree on the corp
Hanzo and Rien for hostages. Seems to be the best way to utilize who we got.
I would trust Genji solo if we just need information, but the corps are making weapons specially for known weaknesses and Symetra saw Genji fail to reflect laser fire, airing on the side of caution some backup may be good.
>>
>>1838526

You weigh your options. "Athena, are the Junkers specifically targeting civilians?"

"No," she says. "As far as I can tell, their assault has actually produced zero casualties, only minor injuries. They are instead focusing on massive property damage."

"It's got to be a distraction," you say. "Their real objective is whatever's in that Vishkar building. But we can't just leave those hostages -- shit. All right. Get Reinhardt and Hanzo's transport to the hostages. If anyone can protect them, it's Reinhardt, and Hanzo can scout the situation for him. McCree and Genji, get them into that facility and see what's going on."

"I will inform them," she says.

Stuck in a civilian plane making its way north over Africa and the Mediterranean, no way of reaching the battle in time -- and not in fighting shape, even if you could -- you're forced to watch the event on your helmet's screen, in snatches and bursts from Reinhardt's helmet cam and Athena's hacked security footage. You keep Mercy, Mei and Winston updated as you watch.

As you hoped, Hanzo's sonar arrow gives Reinhardt all the scouting information he needs. The Crusader smashes into the Kofi Aromo through the wall from the next-door shop, debris flying, and lays into the Talon operatives left and right with his hammer. "Cowards!" you hear him shout. "Hiding behind civilians? Now you face a warrior!" The Talon soldiers open fire indiscriminately, but Reinhardt's barrier field snaps into place, protecting them. Hanzo's arrows take the soldiers down while their focus is elsewhere, and Reinhardt smashes the last one into the ground.

"Well done, guys," you say. "McCree, status?"

"Tarnation," you hear McCree mutter. "Seeker, things ain't lookin' so good. There's a trail o' bodies in here. Vishkar security. Leads inside the building. Gunshots further in. Whatever Talon wants, they might get it if we don't intervene. But uh, I ain't so sure the Vishkar fellas will be glad to see us."

>We can't afford to wait around. Get in there and take those Talon soldiers down.

"We can't let Talon get their hands on something that Vishkar's cooked up," you say. "It could be one of those weapons designed to fight us -- or worse. That said, Vishkar might not welcome our help. See if you can aid them without being seen. McCree, Genji, you agree? Athena?"

"Sounds good to me, Seeker," McCree says. "Ain't nothin' for a couple of old Blackwatch hands?"

"I will take point," Genji says.

"You and me, ninja and cowboy. Just like the good old days, eh pal?"

"No Gabriel to boss us around."

"Heh, yeah. I still ain't sure whether I miss the son of a bitch, or I'm glad I ain't never got to listen to another one of his speeches again."

A few minutes pass in silence. You imagine Genji and McCree going about their business, stealing through the sterile shadows of the Vishkar facility. They're veterans of Blackwatch, and -- outside of perhaps yourself -- the best covert operatives the new Overwatch has to offer. Unfortunately, even veterans make mistakes.

"Goddammit," McCree says, gunfire ripping through the air in the background of his comms. "Vishkar security spotted us, and they remember us from the Brazil affair. They got us pinned down here. Genji's tryin' to flank 'em, but--"

You hear an explosion through McCree's comms. "What the hell was that?"

"Big hole the wall that weren't there before. Talon soldiers goin' through. Reckon that's them gettin' away with whatever it is they came for. Sorry, kid. We weren't fast enough."

"Just focus on keeping yourselves safe right now," you tell him. No point in worrying about what kind of weapon Talon just stole for themselves -- at least, not right now.

Athena pings you. "Reinhardt and Hanzo have arrived at the entrance," she says, showing you the exploded front doors of the Vishkar facility through Reinhardt's helmet cam.

"All right. The objective's compromised. McCree, Genji, get out of there. Team, regroup and--"

This might seem like the dumbest option, and it probably is, but it's also our only chance to figure out what they've got before they use it on us. And I doubt any of us want a repeat of what happened with Tracer, unless it means Sniper Gran saves our asses again, and as much as I love Ana I'd rather not chance it.
However, if they can't grab whatever it is, at least try and see what it is, so we get a heads up. (I'm betting it's something to fuck up one of the original members... blocking Mercy's healing tech, anyone?)

"Genji, Hanzo, chase down those Talon soldiers," you say. "Get onto the rooftops and try to spot them, see what the hell it is they took. Don't engage yet. Just scout and report. Reinhardt, McCree, keep yourselves safe, but follow them and stay ready for anything."

You spend a tense few moments waiting. You try watching Genji's helmet-cam, but it makes even a rogue with a head for heights like you motion sick trying to watch a first-person perspective of a ninja cyborg doing rooftop parkour. Non-enhanced humans weren't meant to see such a view. You turn it off and wait it out.

"Spotted the Talon operatives," Hanzo mutters into the comm. "They've arrived at a dropship, landed at an intersection. One of them is carrying some kind of long black case, heavily locked."

"A long black case? Like, about the size and shape you'd carry a big rifle in?"

"Just so," confirms Hanzo.

"Son of a bitch," you mutter. "It's got to be one of their anti-Overwatch weapons. And now Talon has it."

"We must stop them, brother," Genji says urgently.

"Wait!" you hear Hanzo urge. "Get down! You must be more careful, Genji. Your Mercy cannot bring you back every time."

"Do you see something?" you ask.

You sigh, frustrated at the failure, but not willing to risk the Shimada's lives by sending them into Widowmaker's sights. "Get out of there, guys. We can't send you straight into a trap. Athena, Junkers' status?"

"They appear to be withdrawing. A second Talon dropship has just landed," Athena says, highlighting the location on your map.

"Can our guys get to it in time?"

"No."

You mute your comms and scream "Son of a bitch!" You and almost pound the airplane's wall with your fist, before you remember the others are looking at you. At least you have a soundproof helmet so you can scream in peace. You reactivate comms. "All right, everyone fall back to the transports. We did our best. Saved those hostages. That'll have to be enough. Whatever Talon stole from Vishkar--"

You hesitate, remembering that beam that zig-zagged through the air, following Tracer wherever she went. The wound even came with her, backwards through time, when she tried to rewind off the damage. What else could Vishkar's scientists have brewed up to take down your team? What scientific law will they weaponize next in their pursuit of power?

"Never mind that for now," you say out loud over the comms. "Everyone back to the Watchpoint. We saved a lot of people's lives today. On two continents, no less. And that's what's important."

The others agree, which assauges your conscience a little. You watch the ground pass by outside for a few minutes, before your private mail lights up. Something from an unknown number? You send it to the quarantine sector in your gear's drive in case it's a virus, then open it. Inside--

You erupt in a choking fit.

"What's wrong?" Mercy asks, concerned. "Are you all right?" Everyone turns to you, but you wave them off.

"I'm fine," you say, reassuring the group. "Just, uh, went down the wrong tube there. No problem, hah hah." You sink back into your chair and bring it up again, hardly believing it's real. But there it is.

Widowmaker sent you a selfie.

She's still in the shadows of the Talon dropship, but it's well-lit enough to show that it's definitely her. The cold beauty of her face shows a cruel but fascinating smile. She's added a caption. "Au revior, ma petite mouche."

Until next time, my little fly.

If Widowmaker has taken a personal interest in you ...

Oh, shit.

Seeker has a history of defying normal "superhero" conventions. Widow maker is either expecting a serious reply, if any.

It's entirely in character for Seeker to do something unexpected to try and crack her smug facade. Also, it helps that he's angry right now because of how relatively poorly the missions went.

There's something you want to do, but you can't do it right now in this small aircraft with Mei and Mercy sitting right next to you. So you'll save that for later.

For now, you take out your m-pad (mini-pad, descendants of the phone), hold it up at an angle that you happen to know flatters your hood and helmet combo (maybe because you practiced). You hold up a peace sign with the other hand, and snap a selfie. You add on a caption "New phone, who dis?" just to fuck with her, and send it off.

Later on, when you have some privacy, you're going to send that bitch a picture of your dick. See how she likes a shot of your naked trouser snake. Maybe you'll caption it "Not so little now, am I?" You'll have to look up the french for that. How will she react, you wonder? She'll either be shocked and appalled -- or enjoy it. You'd be fine with either one, really.

"Commemorating the mission?" asks Mei. You sweat for a moment before you realize she has no idea what you're thinking, and she's talking about the normal, non-sexual selfie you just took.

"Right," you say. "Just wanted to get a good shot of myself on the plane. When we land, I'll get one of the team. On an entirely unrelated note, I think I have a stalker. Widowmaker got a hold of my private number."

Mei and Winston react with shock. "But how could she get that?" Winston asks. "Our comm satellite still appears to have its encryption intact."

"This is a number I used before Overwatch," you say. "Private account, off the grid. It's hard to find, but Talon has an extremely skilled hacker in their employ. If she went digging, it's not unrealistic that she could find it." You think over the e-mails you've been using that account for. Some of your old criminal contacts, Lucio, and Fareeha. Could any of them be compromised? Could they be targets for Talon now?

Mercy is smiling politely. You're not sure if that's the real polite smile, or the "I'm clamping down on my emotions" smile -- you haven't learned to tell the difference yet. "What did she send you?" she inquires.

"Oh, uh, some kind of taunt. I get the feeling she's big on setting traps, and is annoyed I keep getting out of them."

"What are you planning to do?"

"I'm not sure," you lie. "Set up a new mail for my contacts, obviously. Maybe I can use it somehow. Lure her into a trap of our own, turn the tables on her. Right now, this just one more thing to worry about. Let's focus on getting everyone back to the Watchpoint safe and sound, and figuring out what we're going to do next as a team. I can worry about having my old e-mail account hacked later," you say, trying to downplay your fears about Lucio and Pharah.

>>
Seeing how we are getting closer to route lock, who are we shipping Seeker with? I think silver is a good pick.
>>
>>1839324

You quickly go through the process of creating a new email account on the web, someplace you hope even Talon's hacker would never look. You fire off messages to Lucio and Fareeha, telling them to please contact you at the earliest possibility, and to be wary of anything suspicious. No replies come while you're still on the airplane. They're both pretty busy people, so that's totally normal. It doesn't mean they're already kidnap victims of Talon. Right? Everything's fine.

Kigoda lets you off in Portugal, some distance from the Watchpoint. "If you ever have need of me again, my friends, do not hesitate!" You watch his plane circle around and take off, receding into a black dot in the blue sky to the south.

You call an automated hovercab to your location to take everyone out to the secret cliff path to the base, then wipe the cab's memory before following them. Winston punches in the code to the outer security door and swipes his keycard, letting an ashen and bedraggled quartet of agents into the base. Brigitte comes running up, followed by the somewhat slower Torbjorn on his shorter legs. "Is everyone all right?" she asks. "Athena told us what was happening, but it's hard to believe. Dealing with a Talon attack in the middle of a volcano eruption? Geez."

"We're all fine," you say. "Well, everyone except for me. Again. Mercy patched me up, though, so I really just need a shower. We all need showers, badly. And laundry. Any word from the transports?"

"They're on their way," Brigitte says. "Should be here sometime in the night."

"All right, good," you say. "Reinhardt and Hanzo must be exhausted, going straight from Kilimanjaro to Mumbai. You're the best person to help out the big guy, Brigitte. Make sure he gets what he needs."

She nods. "I will."

"All right, the rest of you, dismissed or whatever. Let's get ourselves cleaned up. It's been a long day, and although Talon might have got away with something, we still saved a lot of people today. Overwatch is doing something good in the world. We should be proud of that."

UPDATE INCOMING
>>
>>1839337
>>1839341

Another sunrise at the Watchpoint, another morning in the medbay getting a stern reminder from Mercy about your own self-preservation.

She does what she can to fix up the damage, saying that your hazard suit protected you from anything too serious, and you should be ready for the field in no time. However, without more extensive reconstruction, it'll leave a scar. She shows it to you with a mirror, a twisted patch of skin about the size of your outstretched hand. You tell her that it's fine, for now. Having a burn scar on your back from literally being struck by flying magma from a volcano, well, that's got to be pretty high up there on the "cool scars" list, right? At least, that's what you tell yourself as you look away from the seared patch of flesh in the mirror.

No message from Widowmaker. Shame. You were hoping to get back either something ribald and risque, or a string of French curses. Maybe she's too aloof to respond -- or maybe she's just busy with Talon stuff.

How do Talon agents like Widowmaker spend their time when they're not on missions, you wonder? Do they endlessly brood in shadowed hallways and dark chambers? An endless Spartan-like regime of military training, perhaps? Or maybe they're more like the Overwatch agents who, in this new team of lax discipline, spend half their time in casual clothes gossiping, watching movies, or working on whatever strange side projects their hearts desire.

It didn't cross your mind until later last night that Widowmaker might forward the picture to her fellow Talon agent, Sombra. If so, the world's most renowned and infamous hacker now has a photograph of your dick. No matter. You've got nothing to be ashamed of down there. Quite the opposite, really. If two attractive and deadly female agents of Talon want to gloat over it, then so be it.

(Continued)
>>
>>1841130

You check your new mail account. There's a message from Lucio, but none from Pharah. You haven't heard back from her in some time. Are things all right with her? Could she have gotten in trouble with Helix for conducting an off-books investigation -- or, perhaps, for consorting with a known criminal?

Reading Lucio's message, he says that, as scary at the thought of being in Talon's crosshairs is, he's willing to continue the tour. Although, he adds, maybe he'll start springing for a larger security detail and a few more local police bribes.

Can you afford to let him keep doing this? Playing to huge crowds in stadiums and parks, each concert a perfect opportunity for a certain sniper to put Lucio in her crosshairs? On the other hand, his music is blowing up, and with Overwatch still being strapped for cash and without a patron, the extra funding from a world-famous musician's concert tour is important, even vital.

>Continue with business as usual. You're stretched thin as it is.
>Assign an agent to act as Lucio's bodyguard, either behind the scenes or in public.

While you don't feel like you need to hit the big red button and shut it all down, it's best if Lucio wraps things up soon. He can end his tour with a big bang and get out of Widow's crosshairs, then join Overwatch and get right back into them. At least he'll be helping the fight directly, taking his fate into his own hands, instead of passively waiting for a bullet.

You think about asking Athena to focus her darknet analysis on him and any possible assassination attempts, but considering Talon seems to have multiple schemes in motion, maybe it's better if you don't narrow her focus too much.

There's some kind of public relations story there about a world-famous DJ, politically outspoken in the cause of freedom, joining up with the reborn Overwatch. Maybe you should add "PR agent" to the list of employees to hire, or Athena functions to acquire.

You message Lucio to keep going, but not to plan any more dates beyond the ones already on his calender.

>>1841183

Despite the team's appearances at attention-grabbing events in public yesterday -- one at a massive natural disaster, the other at a vicious terrorist attack in the middle of a major city -- the corporate news is still pretending that the new Overwatch doesn't exist. Praise for their swift handling of the Kilimanjaro relief effort goes to the African Union's emergency management agency, while stopping the vicious terrorist attack by Talon on Mumbai is, of course, credited to a swift response from Helix's international force of peacekeepers.

The cracks in the system are showing, though. The rumors of Overwatch's return have now spread far beyond the darkweb. News anchors who dare to speculate are cut off by their networks, mid-sentence. Corpnet message boards are full of chains of deleted threads as panic-stricken moderators attempt to suppress the conversation at their administrators' behalf. The lies won't last for much longer. Something has to give, and soon.

More and more people are beginning to believe the truth, and you can see the effect of that as Athena shows you the increase in donations and financial support. It feels wrong, somehow, to attach a concrete financial gain to being a hero and saving people's lives. You directed the team in Mumbai to rescue those hostages instead of focusing on the real threat, not because of this, but because it was the right thing to do. Still. It's good that something came of it.

Athena tells you that Mei has requested your presence in the training hall, at your convenience. You were also thinking about stopping by to see your new scientist, Maeve Carrol, and see if she's making any progress on decrypting the corporate data you stole from her former office -- and of course, there's those half-finished piloting lessons you started with Tracer.

You meet Mei in the training hall. She's dressed in her white and blue fur-lined parka, holding her ice gun, looking like she's trying to work up her courage for something. You clear your throat, startling her, but after a few moments of making embarassed faces, she composes herself and says what she has to say.

"I'm not happy with how yesterday you had to save me from that blast," she says. "Wait, what I mean is -- I'm happy that you did it, of course. I mean that I'm not happy with myself. If I'm going to be on the team, I can't afford to be a liability. I can't be so vulnerable." She seems unusually determined. "That's why I -- I've decided to develop a new defensive technique. You saw yesterday that I can create an ice wall within a short distance. That can help me shield you, or anyone on the team. But I thought of something else. Something where, for a few seconds, I can protect myself from anything.

"Go on," you say, intrigued.

"Well, by modulating the thermic extractor to project a short-term exclusion field, I can, er, um. Freeze myself. In an ice block. If I arrange the fields right, the outer layer should be incredibly dense, resistant to almost any projectile or energy."

"And I presume it doesn't kill you to be frozen inside, or there wouldn't be much point."

"Uh, yes, of course. Cryonic technology is well tested, and the reversal process is quite harmless." She looks down at the ice gun in her hand. "Although this particular application has never been tried before ..."

"It sounds a lot like the cryo chambers you used back in Antarctica," you say, and glance down to see her knees shaking. "Which is why I'm guessing you're terrified."

"I'm not!" she insists. "J-just because similar, far more proven and tested technology failed my team when it counted, and they all died, I-I-I mean, what kind of reason is that to be afraid?"

"A pretty good one, if you ask me. Have you tried it yet?"

"N-no, I was just waiting until you got here. To, uh. To witness. As the one in charge of deployments, you should of course be aware of your agents' capabilities. Yes. That is why I called you. It's definitely not because I'm afraid."

Mei is too adorable for this world.
>>

You cross the distance and rest a hand on Mei's shoulder. "Look. You don't have to do this. You're a huge help to the team just acting as an assistant to Winston and Mei and part-time base defender. You don't have to push yourself to this extent to become a full field agent."

"I want to," she says, determination fighting fear in her eyes.

You nod, and step back. "All right. Let's see it, then. Mei's invincible ice block technique."

Mei takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, like she's about to plunge into water. Then she triggers a button on the side of her gun. Almost faster than your eyes can see, an iceberg forms around Mei with a loud crunch. A rush of heat passes by you, the thermal energy that once occupied that space. You can see her clearly, inside. Is she conscious in there? You resist an urge to tap on the ice, like a window at an aquarium.

Then, just as suddenly, the block shatters and disappears in a cloudburst of tiny snowflakes. Mei stands there, gasping and panting, her cheeks flushing, but very much alive. "It worked!" she says in shock.

>Fantastic. You're shaping up to be one of our best defensive assets.

"Fantastic," you say, applauding. "This is really great, actually. You say this'll block projectiles, energy, just about anything?"

"That's right! At least, that's the theory. I'm leaving that until the second phase of testing, for obvious reasons."

"I gotta say, I'm really impressed. Seems like just a short time ago you were scared of even the idea of being a field agent. With this ice block thing, the wall, and that close-range freeze blaster, you're shaping up to be one of our best defensive assets. I sure as hell wouldn't want to get past you, if I were a Talon soldier."

Mei holds up a clenched fist, a fire in her eyes. "I'll do whatever it takes, Seeker. This world is worth fighting for, and I'm ready to do my part."

"You still need to be careful out there, though. This won't make you invincible out there. You'll have to come out of the ice block eventually. Don't let this get to your head."

"R-right, of course. Don't worry, I'll be careful."

You help Mei test out a few more elements of her new technique, then spend the rest of the day Overwatch stuff -- talking with Torbjorn and Brigitte about the capabilities of the new Forge, giving input on some teamwork-based tactics Genji and Tracer have come up with, and getting Winston's help maintaining some of the more esoteric mechanics in your gear.

Late that evening you flop into your bed, exhausted but not ready for sleep. You take out your datapad, wondering what to do, and at that moment, receive a call. It's an old number, you realize, taking a moment to recognize it. An old number from an old life. Still, it could be important, so you answer. "Hello?"

"Hey, kid."

"Silver! Hey, uh, how's things?"

"Things are good. Keeping yourself busy?"

"You bet," you say, thinking of exploding volcanos, beautiful assassins, cute scientists, and the general mayhem that is your life now. "Never a dull moment, really."

"I'll bet. You must have a lot going on. I last saw you in Rio, yeah? You were asking a lot of questions about Vishkar. Funny thing how just a few hours later, a huge anti-Vishkar riot erupted in the middle of the city. Almost kicked the bastards clean out, like peasants with pitchforks at the castle gates. Crazy how the timing worked out on that, huh?"

"Pretty crazy, yeah."

"Then, you know, this morning I'm looking at darknet pictures from that incident in Africa couple weeks back, with the Omnics that went haywire. You hear about how this "new Overwatch" are the one who took care of it? People don't seem to be clear on what the hell happened, just that there was some kinda three-way dance between the Omnics, Overwatch, and corpsec. I'm sure you heard about it.

"The funny thing is, there was this kid in a purple hood and jacket running around with them. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"

"All right, yeah. I admit it. I went legit. Or, I don't know, does joining a vigilante squad barred from operating by UN edict count as "legit"?"

"You tell me," Silver says. "I always knew that bleeding heart of yours would get the better of you one day, kid. Just not like this."

"So what now? You going to head off and burn down my rep with the crews, now that I'm a lawman?"

"Do I seem like the sort of vindictive bitch who'd that?"

"No. But I've been wrong before."

Silver hmms, pretending to think about it. "Might be the smart thing to do. Let everyone know that our little Bandit thinks he's a white hat now. Keeping your mouth shut when you find out one of your own's joined the law is dumb as hell, when you think about it. But it wouldn't be the first time I've done something dumb on your behalf, would it, kid? So, no. I've got no plans for anything like that. If our mutual contacts suddenly start disappearing, I might rethink things. But until that happens, you've got nothing to worry about from me."

"Glad to hear it. Guess I owe you another one. How many is that?"

"Don't count it up just yet, cause you're about to add another to the list," Silver says. "I got a tip that I'm pretty sure will interest you."

"A tip?" you say, feeling some of the old instincts stirring, that feeling of excitement. "What do you mean?"

"Avalon."

"Avalon? The Archive? Are you serious? You mean--"

"Yep. According to my source, the timelock cracked open on the Vault C entrance just a few hours ago. England is about to become the number one destination for every vault hunter who thinks they're hot shit. And I just happen to know one."

"Holy shit," you say, your mind spinning. The Avalon Archive is one of the big tech vaults that hasn't been properly raided yet, its sophisticated security systems denying even the most dogged of vault hunters. Rumors abound that the archive was made to contain advanced weapon systems, prototypes based on barely-understood quirks of physical laws, and that any vault hunter lucky or clever enough to get inside and survive would surely find a relic of incredible power, that would fetch an equally incredible price.

If someone else got to those weapons first, some of them would surely be sold on the black market. They could easily end up in the hands of Talon or Anubis.

You haven't done a proper tech vault run in two or three years, but really, what's the difference between breaking into high-security corporate facilities and the golden age tech vaults? Nothing, Logan, you answer yourself, except there's fewer living guards, and more death traps, killer drones, and unpredictable quirks of physics. Simple enough, right?

"What do you think?" Silver asks. "I can arrange a transport, if you're interested."

>All right. I'll do it. I can't let those weapons fall into the wrong hands.

You say, "All right. I'll do it. If those weapons fell into the wrong hands -- anyway. I'll take the transport."

"I'm contacting the pilot now," Silver says. "Where shall I send it?"

"Spain."

"You're close to England already, that's good. You might even be the first one there. Pilot should be there in a few hours. I'll text you the slave frequency. Craft has room for a few extra passengers, in case you decide to break a habit and take someone else along."

"I'll think about it," you say. "Hey, uh -- I don't suppose you would want to--"

"Don't even try it, kid," Silver says, chuckling. "Working alongside someone with a badge isn't my style, and I don't do much field work these days. But I know a part of you is still one of us. if you need anything special, anything you can't find through the regular channels. You know who to call."

"I do. Thanks for everything, Silver."

So much for getting any rest after getting blasted by a volcano. Looks like instead of sleeping tonight, you're heading to England, and plunging straight into a vault of unknown dangers from the pre-Crisis golden age.

The only question is: will anyone go with you?

>Go by yourself. Right now, you're a vault hunter again, and you work alone.

my thoughts exactly, but the same applies in reverse.
>>
>>1841482
I thought of this, >>1841486, which is a good idea, but we would probably need Winston's shield for traps and jump jets for vertical mobility. Winston himself is also a good escape plan. Adjusting our gear to get the regen dash and a lighter build would definitely help here.

Armor: Light (+move speed)

Sword: Plasma Blade
Pistol: Thunderbolt (Tesla)
L. Hand: EM Shield
Boots: Angelic Alacrity (Caduceus)
Chest: ---
Ultimate: Magneton Gun (Pistol)

ARMOR
Medium: +50 HP
Heavy: +100 armor, increased movement ability CD
Energy: +50 Shields, -50 HP.

TESLA CORE
Lightning / Shield

Sword (1): Stormblade
In sword form, hold RMB to charge up a powerful area-effect spin attack.

Gun (2): Thunderbolt
In gun form, hold RMB to charge up a lock-on attack that bounces between targets.

Left Hand (E): Knight Shield
Raise a defensive force barrier, shielding yourself and teammates from damage.

Boots (Shift): Shield Dash
Dash in the direction you're moving, creating a force shield that blocks projectiles and knocks back enemies.

Chest (Passive): Arc Shield
Gain a temporary barrier when you use an active ability.

CADUCEUS CORE
Healing / Flight

Sword (1): Einherjar
In sword form, press RMB to gain a burst of health regen and increased melee damage.

Gun (2): Wings of Light
In gun form in midair, press RMB to glide or hover and gain increased accuracy.

Left Hand (E): Rally
Knock back nearby enemies, and heal yourself and allies.

Boots (Shift): Angelic Alacrity
Dash or glide in the direction of movement and gain a burst of health regen.

Chest (Passive): Valkyrie's Chosen
Increased healing received when out of combat for a few seconds. Wounds received while equipped will heal faster.

ULTIMATE CORE (Q)
Charge up a powerful ability. Does not use up a gear slot.

Sword: Omnislash
Magnetize all enemies in an area and dash between them, striking each with a high-damage attack with increased cleave range.

Gun: Magneton Gun
Gain 3 high-damaging hitscan shots that pierce through enemies. Barriers take double damage but are not pierced.

Left Hand: Shadowshot
Fires an anchor trap which latches chains of magnetic energy onto enemies. Tethered enemies are slowed, take increased damage, and can only move a limited distance away from the anchor.

Boots: Shadow Dash
Gain 3 charges of a dash that damages enemies and releases homing projectiles.

Chest: Agility Amp
Gain increased movement speed, ability cooldown, and melee damage.

This is the pastebin of Seeker's current equipment. We currently have a more combat oriented build, which is great. The problem is, this is some serious Seeker-stopping shit we're gonna be dealing with. Regardless of who we take. We're gonna need to make some changes.
My proposal is that we keep our armor the way it is. However, we move our Tesla Core in our boots because Shield dash is really good , we move our Caudecus Core to our chest for that sweet, sweet health regen, and move our ultimate capacitor to our sword, because there will still probably be groups of drones or other scavengers in the vault. The ultimate can also kind of function as a Swift Strike++ should we choose to use it.

either of these seem good to get out of a pinch if necessary, to the point where I'd suggest Agility Amp might be reasonable to enhance our performance should we find ourselves in deep troubble, with a dash getting into melee range is trivial as well, mind you.

I feel like we should stick with what we have. Something tell me a high tech vault might have some barriers and such.

As for who to bring, I feel like we should bring someone to cover our weakness. Tracer is nice and all, but she is also one of our two pilots. Taking her limits how many people we can send unless Athena can pilot multiple craft at once.

I honestly think Torb is a good person to bring. He knows tech, can shore up defenses we lack, is good in close range, and we haven't done almost anything with him.

I vote Tracer and/or Genji. We need mobility, and the three of us have it in spades. Could possibly switch one of them out for Hanzo, but I feel like he'd be more useful back at base. >>
>>1841799
Tracer and possibly Torbjorn/Winston. Everyone else is either too tired or unsuited to this operation.
>>
>>1841824
Tracer is one of our pilots though. If we take any other super mobile person I'd say Genji because deflect and it doesn't limit our ability to respond to threats.

Though I think bringing either is a mistake and Winston is one our of two tanks. Muh mobility won't be that useful in an enclosed space.
>>
>>1841472
>>1841477

I agree.

I feel the response team should be Seeker and a Scientist/Engineer. Preferably Torbjorn.

>>
>>1841849

>>
>>1841936
the rewind might work in our favor for disabling traps, but with deflect and wall climb open up entirely new alleys along with his double jump...

>>1841615
though if we take noone to heal we NEED to change our equipment to provide at least sporadic recovery in case something goes awry, because that can happen at any time.

It looks like the consensus is to bring along Torbjorn for his engineering skills and armor packs -- that is, assuming the crotchety dwarf is willing to accompany you on a duo mission in the middle of the night to breach a tech vault filled with dangerous traps and unknown hazards.

Getting Torbjorn to agree to the misison turned out not to be the hard part. Despite the late hour, you found him awake in the Forge, poring over designs and blueprints. When he heard the situation, and what was at stake, he concurred with your assessment of taking along someone as backup, but leaving the team's healer and pilot free to handle any situation that might arise in your absence.

No, the hard part turned out to be getting him into the aircraft when he found out it was automated, and the "pilot" was an advanced autopilot, probably breaking one or two footnotes of the international AI treaties just by existing. "I know it's weird, but we already rely on Athena," you protested to the obstinate engineer whose fears, perhaps, were not entirely unfounded. "What's one AI more or less? It's just a short jaunt over to England and back. What could go wrong?"

"Oohhh, you just had to say that, lad, didn't you?"

In the end, you convinced him of the necessity of leaving the two Overwatch transports available -- this recent episode with Talon striking simultaneously with the volcano eruption leads you to believe this won't be the last time the team is called on to fight in multiple places at once.

So that's how the two of you found yourselves crammed into a small automated transport craft, in the air heading north over the hills of France, towards Wales and the Avalon archive, a long-sealed vault theorized to hold deadly prototype weapons.

Torbjorn still seems grouchy, or maybe he's just always like that. Anyway, he hasn't said much. To break the somewhat awkward silence, you:

"So uh, tell me about your kids," you say, thinking that parents always love talking about their kids. "You said you had a big family back home in Gothenburg, right? Was it six kids? Seven?"

"Eight. Where would I even start? They're a pack of rascals, the lot of them. Run me ragged. Never should've had any kids this old, let alone eight of them." Torbjorn sounds surly, but you can hear the affection creeping into his voice. "But you know, my wife, she wanted a big family, and who am I to say no to her? She's a wonderful woman. Lord knows why she puts up with a one-eyed, one-armed dwarf for a husband."

"I wouldn't sell yourself -- I mean, you've got a lot of good qualities." You clear your throat.

Torbjorn continues. "My oldest, Hilde, she's the real handful. Has beautiful blonde hair, just like my wife. Hoped she'd take after her. But she listened to too many stories from her uncle Reinhardt." He scowls. "When she was young, she wanted to be a Crusader, just like him. She'd run around, swinging a foam hammer, shouting about glory. I thought she'd grow out of it, but here we are. I tried to tell her that battle wasn't any place for her. That with Rein as the single exception, every one of the Crusaders perished in battle. But I wasn't in a position to argue. I had every excuse to avoid fieldwork as Overwatch's engineer, and yet I kept going until I'd lost an eye and a hand, and even that couldn't stop me."

"So now she wants to be a fighter, and there's not much you can tell her that'll change her mind."

He lets out a weary sigh. "Pretty much, lad. Ain't your problem, just, you know. It's an old man's burden to be vexed by his children."

"That I can understand," you say, thinking that you've probably vexed your own parents plenty. "Speaking of the old days, I heard the old team tried to break into the Longinus Institute. Were you involved in that?"

"Of course," he snorts. "I was Chief Engineer for most of the team's running, who else do you think would've handled it? Never made any headway on it, though. I even let Reyes try some of his tricks on it. In the end, we hit it with the biggest bomb we were legally allowed to set off that close to a populated area, and we couldn't even scratch the damn door. Haven't a clue what it was made of."

"Yeah, you usually have to be subtle with these places. I remember one time ..."

"... so that's how I found myself upside-down, tied up in a cable, and suspended in midair halfway up the launch chamber, while a dozen guard bots smashed into pieces on the floor down below."

"If this story is supposed to impress me with your foresight and composure, lad, it's doing a terrible job."

"What? No, it's supposed to impress you with my -- you know what? Never mind. Just trust me that I've done this a bunch of times before. I know what I'm doing." He's right, though. That was definitely not the right story to tell.

"So how did you get out?"

"Well, by the time the thirteenth guard bot came along, I had backup. That was part of the brief period I worked with a partner. Very brief period." Realizing you've stumbled onto something you'd rather not talk about, you change the subject and say, "We're starting to get close. Let's check our equipment."

The transport drops you off in one of the flooded cities of western Britain, victims to the sudden climate disaster that shook the world decades ago. Waves of polluted water lap at your feet as you and Torbjorn approach the imposing Vault C door of the Avalon Archive.

"I thought you said it'd be open, lad," Torbjorn says. "Looks awfully shut to me."

"That's because it's waiting for us to knock," you say. "Believe it or not, there was an even bigger door in front of this one before. It was on a timelock nobody could access. Not only were we stuck outside, but we couldn't even tell when it would open. Now it has, and this type of door has a fairly simple access code. Simple for yours truly, that is," you add, cracking your knuckles. You take out your trusty lock jammer and approach the door.

It's been a while since you handled a lock of this complexity, or indeed anything with this high a security rating. The last time you saw someone try one of these, a laser turned into a pile of ash before they even realized they'd made a mistake. Probably not a good idea to mention that to Torbjorn right now, though. You start sweating inside your helmet, trying to put that memory out of your head.

Your gadget strikes green, and you let out a sigh of relief. With a grinding of metal, the huge door slowly slides open. You wait a few moments, listening for alarms or incoming guardbots. Nothing happens.

"All right, I'm impressed," Torbjorn admits. "Getting the door open at all was more than we could ever do, and ye even managed not to set off any alarms or traps doing it. Nice work, lad."

"Thanks," you say. "Still a long way to go, though. Stay close to me, and don't touch anything. Things can get weird in a place like this."

"Don't have to tell me twice."

The two of you head inside. The archive is untouched by the overgrowth and flooding that surrounds the city outside. Everthing is pristine except for a layer of dust. The first chamber is an entry hall with chairs and a reception desk, behind which on the wall is a large placard reading Avalon Utopics, Site C.

Hallways lead left and right. Arbitrarily, you choose left, and head off. Torbjorn stays close behind you, his rivet gun at the ready.

Soon you encounter your first obstacle: a patrol of still-functioning guardbots, wolfhound class. You're positioned by an open doorway into a manufacturing floor, where there's two of them you can see sniffing about. Probably two more nearby -- that's their usual deployment pattern.

"My god," Torbjorn says quietly, staring at them. "They're Model 12-A. I thought they were never put into production."

"You see a lot of things in these places that aen't supposed to be exist," you say. "We can get past them, but it might be a bad idea to leave them behind us." They could bite you in the ass later, either literally or metaphorically. On the other hand, if you can find another way further into the complex, maybe you shouldn't make extra trouble for yourself.

A 4 is still a success. Here is his WIP new dice system:

Die 1: "action die". Result of the primary action. Land your attacks, make the jump, stay in stealth, etc. If multiple options are selected (my "choose 3" combat votes) then the roll determines how many of your options actually happen. In general, 7+ means all 3, 4-6 means 2, 1-3 means 1.

Die 2: "consequence die". Determines extra fallout from Die 1. If you get shot, for example, a failure means something else bad happens -- you drop a critical item, or get cut off from your allies. It can also be good -- if Die 1 was a success, Die 2 can add a bonus. This can also be used as "ally die" to see what happens with your friends.

Die 3: "Escalation die." How the scenario progresses, ex. how fast your ally can break through a safe, how long enemy reinforcements get to the scene.

While Torbjorn waits by the door, you sneak into the room and prepare an ambush. At the last moment, though, the hounds veer away from the path you were set to attack them on. One of them raises its head abruptly, sniffing the air, and you realize it's scented you. With no choice but to attack, you hold down the new side button on your gun, charging it up with electricity, then step out from cover and fire the charged thunderbolt at the nearest bot. Lightning flashes through it, scorching its plating and frying its circuits, then leaps to the other bot nearby, damaging it as well.

The dog you shot goes down, but the second, the "bounce" target, stays up and charges forward. Your gun is shaking in your hand, still venting gas after the thunderbolt strike. You spin it into sword form, but not fast enough -- the hound leaps at you and knocks you over. It lunges for your throat, and you barely block in time with your forearm, feeling the sharp metal teeth puncture your armor and sink into the flesh underneath.

A cluster of red-hot rivets suddenly sprouts from the hound's head. The lights in its eyes go out, and the pressure on your arm lessens. You wrench it free and stand up, rubbing at the torn armor on your forearm, looking down at the slumped form of the guard wolf.

"Thanks," you say to Torbjorn as he joins you.

"Weren't nothing. Hmmm." He inspects the damage to your arm. "I ain't Mercy, lad, but I might be able to do something for you."

Torbjorn gets down to the disabled robot and uses his mechanical wrench-hand to pry off some of its metal plating, then drops it over his shoulder into the forge implanted in his back. The superheated interior quickly turns the metal to slag, then a molten nanite solution.

Only a few seconds later, Torbjorn withdraws something from the forge: a metallic rectangle, containing an inner yellow glow. He hands it out to you. "Here. Touch this with yer wounded hand."

You reach out gingerly. "Uhhh, what does it--?"

"Just touch it!" growls Torbjorn.

You do, and are startled as the metal springs to life. Supporting braces snake out along your arm, acting as guidelines for armor plating that extends and snaps into place. In less than two seconds, your entire arm is coated with iron-grey armor, with highlights in Torbjorn's red and gold. You flex, experimentally, and move your arm around -- the armor moves with you just fine. "Holy crap," you say. "Armor packs? How do those even work?"

"It's complicated," Torbjorn says. "I spent a lot of work on the "one size fits all" part. But hard work pays off."

You look around. "There's probably two more hound bots, but I can't see or hear them. On the other hand, there's probably a control program that, at some point, will notice these two are gone."

"Don't worry," Torbjorn says, producing a turret. "I'll leave us a rearguard."

The two of you find a huge, cylindrical chamber with walls of white panels. Service stairs travel down the outer wall, and you proceed downwards several floors, your footsteps echoing in the empty space. A heavy doorway at the bottom blocks the only path out, but some quick work with your doorjammer has it open, revealing a long hallway.

"This is usually about when I hit some kind of trap or nasty physics experiment gone wrong," you say to Torbjorn. "Stay on your toes ..."

"Just as I thought," you say, as the door seals shut behind you. Panels in the walls open to reveal hidden vents that start to pump a foul-looking smog into the room. Your helmet's hud lights up to alert you that this is, in fact, toxic gas.

Your suit's hazmat systems are equiped to deal with just such an event. You look down at Torbjorn, recalling the time you suffered a toxic gas attack in the cockpit of that Titan mech -- but this time, the engineer is already pulling on a custom facemask with respirator. He looks up at you and gives you a thumbs up. "I'm not falling for that trick a second time."

"Good stuff," you say, then pause to examine the situation. Toxic gas doesn't have to be so obvious, but this smog is choking off visibility in the room. Could there be something else? "Stay here for a moment," you say to Torbjorn, switching through a few different filters on your helmet's view as you cautiously explore forward. On a certain filter, several floor plates nearby light up. "Thought so. Blast plates in the floor. This gas is probably explosive as well as toxic. You can see me all right, Torb? Okay. Just follow my path exactly and we'll be fine."

You and Torbjorn make it out of the deathtrap without incident. The next trap room --

"Huh," you say, looking down at the floor. It's heavily damaged, as though melted or burned away. "That's odd."

"What is it?" Torbjorn says. "Acid bomb?"

"Could be," you say. "Could be hungries -- that is, disassembler nanites. Could be a lot of things. What I'm worried about is what it means."

Torbjorn understands your line of thought. "Someone else might've already set it off."

You nod. "Now, it's always possible that it's just a random accident. Or someone broke here in before today, and it's just that nobody ever heard about it. But yeah. It could've happened just now, and someone is a few steps ahead of us." You flip through a few filters, looking at the destroyed floor, but nothing shows up. "I can't tell either way. But we'll have to be careful."

You enter a large, shadowed chamber, lit only by a handful of spotlights above and floor lights below. Some kind of vehicle bay, with a high ceiling and a wide open space littered by the husks of inactive machines next to gantries and tool chests. Most are just loaders and transports, but one particular mech, about three times your height, has armor plating and a huge gun attached to its left arm. "That'll be the security force's heavy hitter," you say quietly to Torbjorn, pointing to the large mech. "Looks like it's shut off, so unless we cause a major alert, we won't have to tangle with it."

You look around and spot a door marked DEPOT 01. "That's where we're going," you say. "There might be active repair bots, little drones on wheels, but they're pretty stupid." Torbjorn follows you as you begin to move forward, quickly but quietly, through the shadows of the vehicle bay. "Unless we run into a huge problem between here and that door, I'd say we're in the clear."

A loud click sounds as a spotlight directly illuminates your position. A second one joins it, then a third. You take a step back, drawing your weapon -- but no alarm sounds. None of the machines activate. Nothing happens. You stand back to back with Torbjorn, your heart pounding, trying to be ready for anything.

But nothing could have prepared you for this.

"Hiiii!" you hear a girlish voice say over your comms. "Sorry to tell you this, boys, but you're too late. The greatest vault hunter in the world has beaten you to the riches of Avalon!"

Above you stands a figure that is bizarrely, impossibly familiar. A purple hood over a helmet. Form-fitting light armor with gadget pouches. Heavy gloves.

"Who are you?" you demand, not believing your senses.

"Don't you know, silly?" she says. "I'm the fastest, most daringest rogue ever to delve into the vaults of the golden age: Bandit!" She strikes an action pose straight out of a cartoon, then laughs. "I'm you!"

The girl is wearing something like a fan's copy of your old outfit, the one without the modifications Brigitte made to slim it down. She's carrying a hefty pack over her shoulder, presumably the loot she's already obtained from downstairs. A weapon is holstered at her hip.

And there's something about that voice. It's modulated by her helmet, but something is weirdly familiar about her speech patterns--

"Now I'd love to stay and chat," she says. "But I've got a buyer for this stuff, so I'm afraid I'll have to run. But don't worry. I'll leave you a playmate." She triggers a remote in her hand.

The engine of the nearby combat mech whirs to life. Lights inside the empty cockpit as the drone intelligence activates. The heavy machine gun on its left hand chunks as it locks ammunition into place.

"So long, other Bandit!" the girl giggles. "See you soon! Aaand smoke bomb!" she shouts, as she throws down a smoke bomb, and disappears.

Unfortunately, you don't have the luxury of coming up with a retort, or thinking about what the hell just happened, because you're about to fight a huge mech.

"Get a turret set up!" you shout at Torbjorn. "I'll distract it!" You lay down a quick barrage from your heavy pistol, aiming at the mech's targeting systems and sensory ports. The big machine gun kicks to life with that "buzzsaw" sound of rapid fire ballistics, but you dealt enough damage to send its aim off, and the bullets go wide, clanging against the metal wall behind you.

Torbjorn throws down a self-building turret, which immediately on finishing itself sights onto the mech and begins firing its semi-automatic gun. The engineer strikes it repeatedly with his hammer, channeling the nanite solution in his implanted forge, which assembles itself around the turret and creates a second gun, firing alternately with the first. The turret's consistent fire draws the mech's attention.

All right, you think, preparing your weapon. That thing will obviously win a gun battle with Torb's turret on its own, but it'll give you the chance to take this thing down while it's distracted.

In a shower of golden light, they propel you through the air in a much more graceful, controllable way than the effect of the Shield Dash, and you can feel the biotics already working to heal the fang wounds on your arm. Spinning your weapon into sword form, you fly straight at the mech and swing at it, attempting to sever its gun arm at the shoulder. But it blocks with its other arm, knocking you out of your flight and landing in a heap on the ground nearby. The machine gun levels at you, but you manage to roll behind a large support pillar, and the hail of bullets strikes the metal instead of you.

You didn't get hit that hard, you thinking, coughing. Just some bruises and maybe a broken rib or two, no big deal. At least you distracted it. Torbjorn with his rivet gun, alongside his turret, are laying in fire to the thing, dealing some significant damage. With your help, you're sure he could finish it off. But --

You look at the hallway "Bandit" just disappeared down. Not only do you want to find out just who the hell is under that mask, but she's carrying the weapons you came here to keep off the black market, and told you that was exactly where she'd take them. Maybe Torbjorn can handle himself. He's got a turret and armor packs, right? Maybe he'll be fine.

Your fellow agent, or the mission and the imposter?

"Torbjorn," you say over the comms, picking yourself up and keeping the vehicle between yourself and the mech. "I'm going after the objective. Can you handle this?"

"I'll do what it takes, lad. Don't let Talon get those weapons. Go!"

You take off, dodging a line of bullets and finding the shelter of the shadowed doorway you saw Bandit disappear into. You race down the hallway, leaving a din of machine gun fire behind. She's got a head start on you, but you know a few shortcuts in places like these. You dash up several flights up stairs, sprint down a hallway, round a corner, and spot her. She's standing with her back to a heavy security door, as if she was waiting for you.

"I thought you'd come after me," she says. "Too intrigued, huh? Who could be under the mask? Who could be this mysterious woman of mystery? I'll bet you're just dying to know," she adds, with an emphasis on the "dying" as she draws a weapon, some kind of autopistol. She fires, spraying bullets indiscriminately.

Activating your EM shield, you charge down the hallway. You might be in trouble if she could aim well enough to get a shot past your shield, but she appears to have more enthusiasm than skill. You slam into her, tackling her and shoving her up against the door.

"Oh my goodness!" she squeals. "Don't you feel wrong about molesting a female version of yourself, Logan?"

"Who are you?" you demand, your blood running cold at the mention of your real name.

"I'm Bandit, of course, the legendary vault hunter." She raises a hand to stage-whisper. "But secretly, I'm bratty rich kid Logan King, who spent his parents' allowance to set up himself up as some kind of hotshot rogue!"

"How do you know all this? Who the hell are you?"

"I told you, I'm you!" She swings a fist, and you duck, but she was aiming for the door release mechanism. With both of your weights against it, it swings open wildly, and you both tumble to the ground outside. Wrestling with this impossible version of yourself, a part of you is aware you hear the engine of an aircraft approaching.

"That's my ride!" Bandit says. She struggles free and manages to get away, but not before you grab one thing from her:

An aircraft zooms into view. Hovering overhead, it drops a rope for Bandit. She grabs on, turns to you, and does the same action pose as before. "So long, sucker! Better luck next time!"

"I could say the same to you," you say, and raise the heavy bag you ripped from her back as she struggled. "Have fun meeting with your buyer empty-handed."

"What?! Hey, no! I need those! Do you know what'll happen to me if I don't turn up with the goods? Get back here! You son of a --"

You slam the door on her and re-engage the lock.

Shifting the bag of weapons to your back, you make your way back as fast as possible. The sounds of gunfire have died down, which you hope is a good sign.

Sliding to a stop at the doorway to the big vehicle bay, you see the mech is a smoking ruin, battered and pockmarked by heavy-caliber bullets. Crossing the room, you find Torbjorn -- alive, although not in much better shape. He's sitting against the wall, clutching the smoking stump of his wrench arm. His mechanical eye is shattered. A wound in his torso leaks blood. The ruin of his turret sits nearby.

"Just tell me," he says through labored breathing as you approach, "That you got the weapons."

You thump the bag down beside you. "I got the weapons."

"Good," he says. "I've got most of my pain receptors shut down, so I can handle this. I'll be all right to walk out of here soon. Just --" he takes a deep breath. "I'll just be a minute. All right, lad?"

"All right," you say, sitting against the wall beside him. "Just keep talking to me. I need you conscious to walk out of here. I might be able to carry you and the weapons, but it'd be a real pain in the ass."

Torbjorn laughs through the pain. "Fair enough."

"Why don't you tell me about your other kids? You said your oldest wants to be Reinhardt. Are the others any easier to handle?"

"Barely," Torbjorn grunts. "Let's see. There was one time two of the girls had their eyes set on the same dance class, but didn't want to join alongside each other. Think I'd rather face down a dozen mechs like this one than deal with that again."

You keep Torbjorn's mind off the pain and shock with small talk until he's ready to stand up. Slowly, the two of you start making your way out of Avalon.

That's all for Overwatch Quest 23, anons. Hope you enjoyed it, and thanks for playing.

Next time on Overwatch Quest: Korea!

Thanks for running Raven! Any plans on the date for next thread?

We get to bully the gremlin in real life!
How smug, on a scale of 1-10 should we be when we hold our position of Overwatch leader over her tiny little arms?
>>
>>1843682
Thanks for running and yay, bonding time with best dwarf
I am curious about both the weapons and whatever research there is here.
>>
>>1843696
Personally, I'm of the idea that our trolling persona should be separate from the rest of the shit we do... UNTIL we get a really good opportunity to hammer it home with her.
>>
>>1843707
>UNTIL we get a really good opportunity to hammer it home with her.

I would agree. She wont be pro-overwatch if she knows someone she hates is in charge of it.

First we gotta show her that we're the good guys fighting the good fight before we drop the 'i've been harassing you for years' bomb on her after its too late to back out.
>>
>>1843704
>>1843682
forgot to add, maybe we could ask Silver about the copycat, keep us in the loop on her movements so we can capture her, maybe recruit her
>>
>>1843714
*Grabs tinfoil hat*
Maybe Silver IS the copycat!
>>
>>1843787
the thought crossed my mind, but why would she do that?
>>
>>1843822
because she is sad or worried we went legit and uses our old code name for the rep to get jobs.
>>
>>1843714
Purple colored invisibility "cape"? I think it could be Sombra.
>>
I eagerly await our next meeting with Widowmaker, and if she shows us the pic for any reason, we pull the "why do you still have that?" card.
>>
>>1843909
So a way to keep our old rep intact?
>>
>>1843936
I think the only real possibility for that to happen is if we REALLY screw up and get captured by Talon or something along those lines.
>>
Thanks for running Raven. I sort of got serious Gwenpool vibes off of FemBandit.
>>
I say Fembandit is a clone of Seeker.

>>1844262
All X-23 style, huh?

Maybe we should come back to this vault some time in the future, I'm sure an unopened vault would have much more of value than just a couple weapons.

But let's do that later, when we can bring everyone for a full on raid.

As for this Fem Bandit, I hope she'll be like the Chosen from the latest DLC for XCOM 2, a really hard to beat boss with strengths and weaknesses.

Anyway, thanks for running OP this thread was awesome.
>>
>>1845181
We already beat her in a fight just this thread.
>>
>>1845192
More like we outsmarted her IMO.

>>1845181
Thing is, coming back later pretty much ensures it'd be a waste of time since other vault hunters are a thing. They'd pick the Vault clean like a murder of crows picks apart a carcass.
>>
>>1845366
>Outsmarted
We charged her, tackle her against a wall, and snatch something out of her grasp. I would call that just overpowering her.
>>
>>1845378
Yep. She just barely managed to escape us.
>>
>>1844257
