"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
It all comes down to this. Or several days of 'this'. Every choice you’ve made, every success and every failure. It’s all led to you and the Company fighting to stave off the marshalled strength of the entire Free Alliance from the walls of some northern town while you wait for your dread employer, The Necromancer to relieve you with his fell host. Maybe you fekked up somewhere along the line, but for the life of you its impossible to figure out exactly where.

You lost men, brothers. Some you didn’t know too well, it’s the harsh reality of your position as an Officer. A battle is one thing, hours of movement and running around followed by minutes of terror and screaming. One way or another, it's all over soon enough most of the time. Humans weren't meant for sieges, days and days on end of the same pants-shitting terror knowing it will happen all over again tomorrow, if they live that long.

You thrive in this hell, you and people like Bad Hand. You feel better now than you did before the siege started. But your lads... they're only human, you wonder how many will survive this. If any of them will. The butcher's bill grows steeper every day and you still don't know your esteemed employer will bother to keep you among the living.

Kresden Town, Northern Wall Section, Early-Evening Day 3

Two days the Free Alliance has come at the walls and two days you have beaten them back. With the damage Asgorga wreaked in their ranks, they’ve lost the taste for any more action today. The winter winds promise a chilly night as you order your men to set the would-be hero Chevalisse Paladins up on spikes. To further spite them you have the corpses of the Chevalisse peasant maintained intact while their noble leigelords are treated far less carefully. The Northern Wall was a macabre display before this evening, the Vampires display their kills with pride, but the salt in the wound will be that some of the finest warriors on the continent shared a similar fate. Wreathed in blessed, embroidered cloth or wool that smells of pigshit, the Dark Father looked at every corpse much the same.

>[Additional +5DC to Northern Wall Section, the Torkrum Addict debuff will be randomly reallocated each day]

You and your Sergeant look out across the wall to the setting sun, beautiful streaks of orange and purple across the growing clouds as the scattered snowflakes continue to fall. The sight is somewhat marred by the giant fekking Free Alliance encampment located a mite bit closer than the distant sunset. It’s SGT ‘Bad Hand’ that breaks the silence, puffing out his cheeks. ”Your pet project has been a little… ‘off’ lately. She alright? In the brainpan that is.”

His unexpected concern earns him a wry look from you. After all, your 2IC has never been considered the most stable of individuals even in a crew as generally unhinged as the 7th Kreigstrom.

“Sergeant Hadrien ‘Bad Hand’ is concerned with the mental health of someone else? Is this the same Sergeant that fought naked in the streets of Far Sut Rus, or the same Sergeant that [/b]fekked the Necromancer’s crazy sorcerer-bitch sister?”[/b]

Bad Hand demonstrates his multitasking skills by rolling his eyes, imitating a masturbatory gesture with one hand and continuing to clean his teeth with a toothpick in the other. ”Okay first things first, that naked incident was not by choice and you know it. Second, Syka rides like a Below damned Sabari harbour whore high on Synthezene. If you’re around and she’s offering I would –highly- recommend jumping on that.”

”…you’re a fekking mongrel, Bad Hand.” Your disgusted grimace, accentuated by the horrific scar, is somewhat ruined by your struggle not to let it turn into a smirk.

”Meh, each to their own.” Your SGT shrugs before pointing a finger at you. ”And –you- are dodging the bleeding question, brother.”

He jerks a thumb over at the white-haired Trooper helping to impale the corpses of better men than you.

“What’s up with her?”

Glad to see I'm welcomed back. I understand this laxity in posting is not ideal, but once a month is honestly the best I can manage with the hectic workload of full time job and uni. Shit is fekked.

>"Been a tough couple of days for all of us. She just needs time to grieve. She'll recover. I hope." [Clever]
>"She took Kid’s death harder than most. Has a soft spot for children. Not a great trait in a merc." [Experience]

-----------------------------------------

"She has a soft spot for children. Not a great trait in a merc. She just needs time to grieve.

”Too fekking right it's not a great trait for a merc!” Bad Hand grunts ”And time? Feh.
Someone needs to talk to her...”

”Well, I…”

”Not you, brother.” You 2IC sees you about to protest and holds up a hand. ”I mean it, Lieutenant. She’s pretty sore about what happened to Kid, and I’m guessing you already talked to her and it didn’t go down well.”

”What gave it away?” You remember last night all too well, the heady Torkrum shack. The look of despair in her eyes and the sense of shame in your gut.

”The fact that you two have been avoiding standing, or fighting for that matter, next to each other all day. And the heavy-lidded Torkrum eyes were a good tip as well.”

”I’m still the one who should-“

”Yeah, sure. Talk to her later or whatever. But right now you’ve got to head to the War Council the Captain is holding at the Manor. And =I’ve= got to find someone to talk your pretty white-haired Corporal from getting back on the Torkrum.”

”…Shit!” You whirl away from the wall, your Blackthorn boots living imprints in the cobblestone where the blood has grown sticky. Bad Hand has to quicken his pace to keep up, Saint’s issue being a welcome distraction from the thought of what Kiranova will do to you if your late to her meeting.

”I need someone you think she’ll listen to, brother. Someone to bring her back from whatever edge she’s standing on, just for now. Or someone to help her jump across the edge.” SGT Bad Hand puts a hand on your shoulder, forcing you to slow down. ”She’s a good fekking fighter, brother, and she is family. You don’t have to look out for us all on your own.”

SGT Hadrien ‘Bad Hand’s stare is earnest. Your oldest friend, among the living at least, he has some idea of the burden you bear. Born and raised into this, he has always viewed the Company as more than a job or lifestyle. It’s family, and there’s not a thing he wouldn’t do for his highly dysfunctional and morally corrupt family.

--------------------------------------

> Name someone, a member of the 7th Kreigstrom who has been through the shit and is someone that Saint knows well enough to listen to. Saint’s attitude will begin to slightly reflect the views of the person who talks to her. Make this choice carefully.
>>
Providing non-meta justification for your choice will yield bonuses for the roll.

This may be one of the final opportunities to 'mold' Saint beyond what you already have, or perhaps just stop her changing anymore drastically. Keep in mind the previous choices you have made regarding her.
>>
>>1830987
Cairsun and Legless Jenny.
>>
>>1830987
>mask

He has lost soo much but is driven, he continues to serve. He can relate to the loss of a loved one
>>
>>1831002
I'll second this.
>>
>>1830987
I'd want to say prince but if that really isn't an option then I'd either go Cairsun since he'd probably get it, what with their situations being somewhat similar when you think about it, and Legless jenny too like >>1831002 said since it'd probably make her feel better
>>1831007
mask doesn't talk anon
>>
>>1831002
>>1830992
Why? Because he's lost and lost again several times over. He's been a hero and failed as one repeatedly. He's also less of an outright bastard than the others.

As for Legless Jenny, she needs to see these kids as people in their own rights. People who want to have agency over their own lives as much as they can. Jenny has legs now, and a future that's better than just being an orphan until she's old enough to turn out onto the street as a cripple. She has a family now, even if it's not the best one or if it comes with danger.

A family that will protect her, but that she can also protect. She might die still, but it won't be alone.
>>
I won't accept Legless Jenny as an option because she's a child. She'd be the subject of a pep talk, not giving one.
>>
>>1830800

Dude, seriously? TYPE BETTER.
>>
>>1830992
this anon makes a good point, the two would even saint out. Cairsun would help her come to terms with her fallen status and failure and losses, while Jenny would help keep her from turning into a complete emo that's given up on everything
>>
>>1831002
Does she know Cairsun that well? I see your with legless jenny though, distract her suffering over Kid with another orphan she can dote over.

>>1831007
Mask is incapable of conversation. Might be a bit of a problem.

>>1830987
I would suggest Hirstun right now. With Auntie dead, he's the grandfather of the Platoon, and he's seen his share of woes and dead comrades. Especially his speech on how his vengeance eventually burned up and became hollow could strike a cord with the suffering Saint. Most importantly, he'll be a calm listening head, but has the sense to make sure Saint keeps her head straight, or see it gone in the morrow. Only thing I'm not sure about if they know each other well enough for her to take his advice.
>>
>>1831026
it would also help if saint knew how we met kid, the way he died surrounded by comrades was ten times better then being torn apart by cultist dogs
>>
>>1831021
I actually want Jenny to call Saint out on her shit. Kids have to grow up fast in war. She could have been left behind to die, or kicked out of the orphanage to whore or steal or die once she was old enough.

Or even sold to one of the men Saint used to protect.

Here she has a chance to become something more, and she might die beside the Black Company but sure as shit she won't die alone. They'll die for her too.
>>
>>1831037
Cairsun was an option for her sword if I recall and the one we went with.

>>1831030
Jeny can be a topic of the talk then, not involved.
>>
>>1831037
Cairsun is also out Bodyguard so it's safe to say they've been around each other a lot.
>>
>>1830992
Oh! And Cairsun is also Knight-Taskmaster. It's kind of his job to deal with this stuff, no?
>>

>>
>>1831045
We went with Page #63's offer to turn it into the Nightblade, not Cairsun's options.

>>1831051
Hmm they might have been around each other, but Cairsun basically never does anything but wallow in extreme melancholy and spout half-cathartic nonsense. Exposing Saint to such an immensely tragic figure miiiight not be the most therapeutic thing for her now.
>>
>>1830992
I'd say Jack. He was Neumunster, a career soldier, and he's been an NCO for years.
>>
I was thinking maybe the ex numunster guy CPL 'Jack' Marcus he would point out that kids life here was better then being a drummer boy in his old army
>>
>>1831079
Oh right. Those options were all so terrible I kind of blocked it from my mind.

Still I think his half-catharsis is better since she isn't really able to become optimistic any more. Stoic Blackguard focused on the Company is reasonable I feel.

Honestly I'm surprised nobody said Bad Hand. Seeing the Family Man side of him could shock her right out of her funk.
>>
>>1831093
>>1831094

I could accept this as well as a good choice.
>>
>>1831100

Actually, as the vote was pretty split and Jack and Hirstun are the only other members in the 7th that are the same rank as Saint (Corporal) I'll write it up as both of them, with a peer bonus.

Their 'talk' will focus on professionalism and responsibility. Not letting Saint's personal pain or thirst for vengeance burn her up. Mostly because all that will come of it will be getting more of those under her command killed.

>CPL Hirstun of Ligh & CPL 'Jack' Marcus
>DC Hard 40
>Peer Review +10DC
>Old Wardog (CPL Hirstun of Ligh) +10DC
>Neumunster Professionalism (CPL 'Jack') +10DC

I'm going back and double-checking, but I think it requires you forfeiting all orders to activate it next turn.

>3 Successes
Saint gains Officer Material
>If Saint is present in the melee, Prince can issue an Order without any penalty to his personal combat DC

Saint gains the 'Not Today!' Ability
"You don't get to die, soldier, not until I Below well say so!"
>Similar to His Blood For Mine, Saint's ability can be activated to heal a casualty, albeit randomly selected. As this is for a casualty that occurs in the round it is activated, there is a 50/50 chance it will work even on 'Worse than Death' results.

Officer Material: Should Saint survive this chapter of the Black Company Annals, she will likely end up being promoted.

She is not the Dark Father worshiping crazed beserker some anons had been hoping for,
she treats her position with the same level of professionalism as her fellow Corporal's. Perhaps with a crueler streak due to the sword's influence. Paths to power she would never have considered before are now open to her.

”Why are the town council members not here?” The Turncoat Prince, Sab-Ibn-Abbad, murmurs under his breath to you as Demagogue Jale continues speaking to the gathered mercenary officers, Vampires and other people of ill-repute. ”It’s their town we’re fighting for.”

”Why would they be? We’re not on their payroll, and most would probably welcome the Free Alliance in given half the chance.” You mutter back.

You’d seen Gerald something-or-other, the Guildmaster of the Furriers and merchant representative, sitting in the foyer downstairs. You’ve never seen a more well dressed old man look so useless. What’s more is that he knew it, you could see it in his eyes. That of a sailor who has seen storms before, but nothing before this. Odd that the other town council weren’t there.

”Where are the others though, since you’re asking?”

”The holy men, apostates though they may be, Brother Kergin and Sister Adatha haven’t had anymore trouble with the Vampires, alrajul altayib The Turncoat Prince nods in approval. ”Apparently the abominations had taken some townsfolk to their lair without your knowledge, but after that demonstration…. Well they return in one piece, Brother Kergin is caring for them in the Temple. I do not know where the Bailiff’s son… Ludwin? I do not know this.”

”That one? An accident. Tried to break up a little scuffle between some townsfolk and my people. Got himself killed.” The scarred Yellow Dog Captain, Ludos Clayton, leans over. It’s the first time you met him in person, you can only imagine that he was born with that unflattering, mean grin. An ugly baby, an uglier man. Of course, you’re person in a position to judge someone on their looks. ”They were just having a bit of good-natured fun with the ladies, shouldn’t have stuck his neck out.”

Laysa hunaka fi… Your idea of good-natured fun leaves corpses behind, kaalb?” Prince Sabn-Ibn-Abbad hisses through gritted teeth.

”Fek you, Aji sandscum.” Ludos Clayton spits at his feet. He regards you a moment, then spits again. ”And fek you too, Black bitch.”

On a technical point he is our equal in rank. He doesn't have to follow our order but in as this is a city captured by the black company he his bound to follow the rule of conduct dicted by us.

We cannot order his men to do something directly and neither can he with our company.

Though, if Kiranova tells him to not do something he must obey as she's the highest graded in town. And if he doesn't complain she'd just sic us on him and chew us for not enforcing the rules in the first place.
>>
>>1831756
Rather than being our equal it even seems as he's one rank above us as he's a captain.

”Dark Father, Clayton, you’re such a fekking cunt.” You mutter, shaking your head.

The man is dumber than he looks, because he clenches his fist and shifts in his seat to make some kind of idiotic move. Doesn’t he realise you’re the guy with the fekking Dragon? This isn’t worth your time.

”Lieutenant Prince. Is Demagogue Jale boring you with his report?”

”No, ma’am.” You stiffen a little under the Captain’s cold gaze. Clayton’s broken, yellowing teeth make a show at your discomfort.

”Captain Ludos Clayton.” The Yellow Dogs commander’s grin evaporates.

”Shut. Your fekking. Mouth.”

”…” You yourself are successful in restraining your own smirk. There’s a moment of uncomfortable silence as Demagogue Jale looks around.

”So uh, yeah… the Free Alliance has been churning through our undead fairly quickly. The walls remain strong, but… well we don’t have as many intact corpses left to man them even with the freshly raised every day.”

”You’ve raised everything?” There is no threat or disbelief in the Captain’s voice, but all the same it remains dangerous. Like a tiger at ease.

”All the fallen Neumunster, Chevalisse… what can be salvaged anyway.”

”Consider summoning Revenants.” The Vampiric Lord Lorgia flicks his wrist dismissively. ”More unruly tools to be sure but not so demanding in terms of raw material in the remains.”

”Well, I prefer my results to be as non-sentient as possible but with…”

”Do it.” Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova says with a frown. ”And bring back our own as well. Patriot, Mercenary, Man, Elf. I don’t care, get their corpses to work.”

La! La! That is haram! There is only so much the sons of Ajiyimad wil permit!” Prince Sabn-Ibn-Abbad

”Captain!” You speak before you can help yourself, but you’re not the only Black Company officer, as few as there are left, that has a problem with resurrecting your own fallen comrades.

”I don’t have a problem with it. They’re just bodies.” Captain Ludos Clayton spits with a sneer.

”Down, Captain Sabn. Don’t forget what you owe me. And I don’t have time for your sentimentality, Lieutenant Prince.” The Captain snaps, her icy voice having much the same effect as a slap. cold slap across you voice. ”The dead don’t care. Let’s salvage what we can of the living.”

You’ve faced down Dragons with stares less intimidating than the look Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova gives you now. But… can you deal with seeing those who you failed walk again. Un-Living reminders of your failures.

the effect of our decisions aren't as clear as the QM makes them
>>
>>1831971
We do it to save those who are left. We've given our lives once already, a second death isn't too much to ask.

They're just bodies. The men and women (and Kid) who served with us live on in our hearts and it would be a greater betrayal to turn away from their help in death. They aren't the ones that hurt from this, we have to be strong enough to bear it.
>>
>>1831971
The captain makes the hard choices, as an officer we have to support her especially if its for the good of the company.
>>
>>1831978
Then we'll have to raise their morale once more and tell them that if they want to let their comrades rest then they'll have to kill even more of the bastards that put them in that place to begin with.

Do you think so little of them that any of them would not walk a second time to save the rest of them?

I mean. We practically did it ourself and we have sold more of our soul than any other, let alone our blood to keep alive whom we could.
>>
>>1831984
It might not be right, but it is also not right to argue against our captain in public. We can complain to her in private within our company but we shouldn't be speaking against her as it will diminish her status/reputation. The black company is family but the captain's word is law.
>>
>>1831984
Don't conflate game mechanics with IC decision making.

Our comrades are dead - their minds gone.

But we can still use their bodies in order to save our living soldiers.

If we don't make this decision, we are putting the status of dead bodies above living soldiers. It's a character decision, not a game one.
>>
>>1832004
No, no, you are not putting dead bodies above live people.
By not resurrecting them, you are respecting your brothers and comrades. It's how war works, duty must end after death in battle, rest for the decreased soul. You are breaking that rule.

An example must be made.

----------------------------------

You hold your tongue. Long enough until all the non-Company members have left the room. Now it’s just the inner circle, the Lieutenants and the Captain. No one is dumb enough to say a word against the Captain

And still, you hold your tongue. Loyalty to the Captain, and faith in her decisions, outweighs your own misgivings. Most of the other Lieutenants follow your lead. Most accept the logic behind it, or else are too cowardly to say otherwise.

Most. But not all.

*Hawk ptoo* I’d have thought that after I’d given my life for this Company, twenty-fekking-years of sweat and blood, I’d have thought at least in death it would fekking end. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for this Company, that’s what I thought. Murder, blasphemy, whatever-the-fek. But this?” The aging LT ‘Hawk’ of the 4th Infantry looks around in disgust. ”I’d have thought that my brothers would treat my cold carcass with some fekking respect. You think the Annalist is going to like writing –this- in the books? Fek that, you think I, or ANY of you, can look your men in the eye and ask them to fight, when they know you’re going to shit all over their sacrifice the next day?”

No one says a word, but the atmosphere has turned from miserable to ugly. Captain Kiranova’s look is lethal, but the old man is either very brave or very stupid.

[1/3]
>>
>>1832223

[2/3]

”No. I lost friends today, men that had my back since the beginning. Brothers that stormed the walls with me at Sarsburg when it all went to hell, sisters that held the line in that shitshow at Far Sut Rus, comrades that dragged me screaming and crying through the worst of times. I’m going to cremate them tomorrow, I’m going to say the words and send them off. As we should do, as we always have done.”

One of the old guard, his nickname comes from his smoke-damaged lungs not his eyesight. You always took ‘Hawk’ for a cautious fellow. You never saw him standing up to the Captain over this. He looks everyone one of the officers in the eye, most look away. You don’t, and neither does the Captain.

”Fek the Yellow Dogs, have their corpses. The Tassenland and the Ajiyimad. I don’t care. You can have the 2nd Rangers too, the 3rd and 5th Infantry or what is left of them. You can have the bodies of your fekking precious 7th Kreigstrom as well for all I care. But not the Fighting Fourth, not my boys.”

Liuetenant Hawk stands alone, staring across the table at the Captain with the look of an old man who knows how this is going to end. Every other officer either stands with the Captain or shamefacedly keeps their mouth shut.

‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova’s icy blue eyes shift from LT Hawk’s to you. ”Lieutenant Prince. There is a sturdy oak tree in the Manor gardens. Take Lieutenant Hawk down there. And hang him.”

So you do.

[3/3]

*Hawk ptoo* You’re her pet, Black Prince. You fought alongside the same men and women I did in Sarburg, you were right there in the thick of it. You saved all our lives you, me included. But it doesn’t fekking matter does it? You didn’t do it for us, you did it for her. All for her. For that fekking ice-queen bitch. There are some lines that you don’t cross. You think the brothers that follow us in the Annals won’t think I was right? For whatever the fek ‘right’ is worth.”

The rope is tight around Lieutenant ‘Hawk’s neck, the branch that the noose is tied to has the first early sheet of snow. The old man was easy enough to overpower, even without the help of Kiranova’s personal Hellions, but he didn’t go quietly. You snapped the hilt off his sword in its sheath before he even had a chance to draw it. He shivers in the cold, licking his split lip and wincing from the black eye you gave him.

”The whole world can go fek itself but when it comes to the Company… I always tried to do right by the lads. Make sure the pay they saved up went to those they cared about, looked after any spawn or lovers of theirs best I could. Treated their body with respect, and gave them a proper fekking send off. I loved my lads of the 4th, best platoon in the world. I thought you would have been the same…”

You say nothing. What is there to say? This isn’t like the fekking insubordination from ‘The Snake’ or anything. You’re killing this man, a loyal (in his own way) brother of the Company, because he cared to much. But orders are orders.

”You know, I was always worried it was the smoking that would kill me. *Hawk ptoo* Funny, huh?” The old man sighs, looking up at the night sky, cloudy and foreboding. ”Yeah well, fek yourself too you bastard. I’ll be waiting for you on the other side, ‘brother’.”

You nod for the Hellion to kick the chair. There is a snap, the old man dies quickly. You saved this Lieutenant ‘Hawk’ and 150 others like him in Sarsburg, fought together against things you can’t even begin to imagine properly in your worst nightmares. And you feel next to nothing now.

The Captain told the cultists to leave his corpse there as an example. For him at least, the fight is over. For now.

Lieutenant Prince is reaching Black Heart threshold.

Lieutenant Prince Gains +1 Blackguard Skill Points.

Sorry, I meant to include it in a much earlier post. This is Day 3. The War Council has lasted the better part of a day into the evening, in part mulling over where the Necromancer is and why the Free Alliance hasn’t attacked today.

What does this mean?
Also now i can only see the prince end by being killed either by bad hand and saint or incase he dies in the battle he ends up being raised during the siege and so becoming the dark father's avatar. And thus killing the necromancer abd taking his place.
>>
>>1832235
A shame you had to die, Lt. Hawk. But alas, the dead must fight so that the living can survive.

Hell, I'm half-convinced that this isn't the worst act the Company commited to survive. Sadly, we can't quickly access the Annals right now. :V

> Lieutenant Prince Gains +1 Blackguard Skill Points.
Does...does that mean what I think it means?
>>
>>1832239
Can't blame then. At least they will be alive to leave the company and do whatever they want with their gains
they acquired during the campaing
>>
>>1832243
We ruined the Dark Father ending by killing our/his unborn child.

And the Necromancer is so far above us in power that I can only imagine you haven't participated in any of the quest.

There WAS a plot line to discover his name which would render him powerless but that got dropped in favour of surviving.

Don't hang him. The man who passes the sentence must swing the sword. We owe the old warrior that much, for having a pair of rusty brass balls to stare down Kiranova like that. >>
>>1832270
Eddard Stark, if you have time to talk you can join the undeads and fight for us!
>>
>>1832270
Little bit late there.

Hanging also sends a message. He was hung for betraying the Company by defying orders. Placing his troops above the others.
>>
>>1832275
Beheading him will send an even stronger message, in my opinion. It means that no matter how difficult, we have the heart to stare at him in the eye before cutting hish ead off. That he had the right of it, but we had our orders, and so we gave to him a death worthy of someone with that much loyalty to the company, and not to Kiranova.

I know I said it'd be last time, but join us next for sword training with Hirstun, a new Saint with a new work-focused attitude, the largest Free Alliance assault yet and of course the return of old friends. Hi Kid!

Before I can put this skill to a vote I need to calculate where exactly Prince sits with his Black Heart/Secret Softy balance. I've been keeping track since thread #4 I think so I need to sum it up for these Officer/Blackguard endgame skills. (Kreigstrom endgame options don't require it one way or the other)

I know it's a shorter, and more irregularly updated, run than we're used to lately so I offer my apologies. It's a mission freeing up time for this with my new obligations, hot secretaries don't quite make up for it.

Black tongue: "The Shit Winds are blowing Randy"

I hope we survive this last assault coming up. And the termination of our contract.

>>1832292
Ironic, I also want the Kriegstrom ending.
And you see me complaining about the other votes? No, because this is what's putting the NAIL in the coffin.
I wanted to see Prince become a better man. But no, this is grim&dark and a +5 Bonus to the DC will save everyone.
Logically thinking it's pretty retarded. Especially now that an Lieutenant of the Company was executed. You know how much of a hit that will be to the Rangers' morale? Not to speak of seeing their dead comrades come back to life. I am sure many of them shared Hawk's vision.
>>
>>1832297
Hawk was an infantry.
And I voted for it not for +5DC, but instead to play up Prince's one big flaw.
His love for the captian.
>>
>>1832297
It wasn't about the +5dc it was about standing beside our Captain when she made a hard choice.

And having a Lt. Executed is better than tolerating insubordination which would have eventually killed the Company even if it survived this campaign.
>>
>>1832304
Being guided by love when the lives of the entire Company are at stake is never a good call.
>>1832305
And you think this won't bring insubordination?

>>1832313
The tree has more branches if it does.

>>1832319
Oh yeah, let's do the Alliance's work for them and kill our own soldiers.
Fear isn't going to work forever.

Cry more.

It just has to get us through the siege alive.

And luckily our men hat those bastards who actually killed their friends even more

>Before I can put this skill to a vote I need to calculate where exactly Prince sits with his Black Heart/Secret Softy balance.

Fuck, I need a way to Jew my way to Black Prince :V
>>
>>1832294
QM, I promise that I'll be a good quester and now metagame and not fuck up your campaign if you allow me this one favor.

Prince gets to kill Kiranova after this is all over.

She has disrespected the Company and its men. She needs to be punished because of that crime.

Oh, I can't wait for the Company to just break off after this siege's over.
Mmmmhm, the annalists will love that shit.

Forgotten will have salt for years after today.

Speaking of which, will you post the skill vote in this thread or the next one?
>>
You guys are so fucking salty lmao.

No matter how it ends this has been a great quest and will have a fantastic ending. I've always voted for pragmatism and then secret softy for the difficult choices but this is what happens when the MC have dozens of voices in his head.

While the decision will save us in the short run, i hope we didnt get back-stabbed by our men ala Jon Snow

Good soldiers follow orders anon.

We followed ours and they will follow theirs.
>>
>>1839635
I've only just started this quest (last thread was my first time reading black company) and im actually rather surprised at how arherent to anti meta this quest is
>>
>>1839696
Arherent?

Adherent you mean? If so then yes. Prince and the company are very well fleshed out characters I'm their own right, but that has been in a large part determined by the choices the players have made for him over the course of the quest. Right back to the beginning when they decided his ritual was a hot shave and a cup of tea in the morning while having a moment of quiet reflection.

That laid the base for his character, not as one but what his values and habits are. Not a bloodthirsty warrior despite being a Blackguard. Not a particularly ambitious Officer chasing glory to try climbing up the ranks. But a man with a job to do that requires him to sometimes spill blood, who cares for his men and does his best to see them through. Spending their lives in battle, yes, but spending miserly and buying them back when he can.

Prince is best described as Responsible. Every vote for a necessary evil has had him accept the wrongness of his choice and do everything he can to ensure that it IS necessary. He's never made that choice for personal gain, only a couple times in order to survive like with the Orphans. Even then he did what he reasonably could to help them and care for the survivors after.

I hope people keep this in mind when Prince breaks the news of raising their dead to his Kriegstorm. Because we really need to get bonuses those rolls as much as we can.
>>
>Zombie Kid

Oh no baby what is you doing???

We let him take up arms and fight. He did and fell as company brother.
Yeah it's sad, but he is in the annals. He'll be remembered he got immortality of a sort.

Probably won't be seen/used next thread since it's at the end of an old one and the next is a ways off but I would like to work some key points into his briefing.

"Soldiers of the 7th. All of you Brothers in the Company, regardless if some of you are men, some Wildborn, or even the most dangerous of Women. You may have joined just recently on your own, you may have been with us for long years fighting beside men who knew you from before. All of us Soldiers fighting for Coin, hopefully killing for it instead of dying, and supposedly there's a mythical "Guard Duty" where you just stand around looking ready to do some killing for it and you sleep in a bed and pinch waitresses at a tavern every night.

Some of you were thieves and criminals before you joined, some of you were simply unlucky and are now soon to be thieves and criminals along with the rest since most of them never stopped but simply put their talent and skills to use for the Company - usually without getting caught grifting loot even, unless it's particularly nice or small and nobody else is around. Definitely most of us are Bastards, and the rest are Bastards that are better at hiding it.

But Bastards make good soldiers, and the proof of that is that we've survived so far. Through the campaign against noble men fighting for ideals. Fighting for their Nobles and their pride, and dying for it despite their pride being all they'll get out of it. Whereas us, The Black Company; Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds.

The Annalist is the keeper of our history, and while these words have often been all too true, there's a final part that goes unsaid but not unheard. *Never for free*. We fight for coin and fight to live to spend it. We'll fight for a noble goal if we're paid for it. We'll fight for a dirty one if that's what we were paid for instead. That's what sets us apart as a Company, and lets us demand a high price for our deeds dark or decent. The Company has never broken faith first, although there have been times the Company almost broke. Almost, but we managed to survive each time. We have fought for rulers that could be well described as monstrous. In this very campaign we've fought beside literal monsters. And been damn glad of them, such as during the nights when they walk the walls and we can rest.

But that is nothing new. The Company itself has a long and well earned reputation for being vicious and unpredictable. When necessary, we've even been our own Monsters. Black hearts. Cold Steel. Dark deeds. Sometimes we pretend to forget, but those words hold us to the truth.

And every black decision, every cold slaughter, every dark deed done would be done again. Because every one was paid for, in the only coin we can never lose but always spend. The coin we pay with is not what we get from the Employer. The coin we pay in is loyalty.
>>
>>1839865
The difference between the Black Company, what makes us a Family despite being a bunch of bastards who often dislike one another because we're all bastards, isn't that the Company always keeps its contracts. It isn't that we have our history written down, uniting the past members with the present. It's that the Company always pays back what it owes. The meanest, roughest, most unpleasant thug among you, probably myself out of everyone here since being in charge means I have to be just to keep the other real bastards in line - if I wasn't so pretty I wouldn't have any friends at all. But I trust every one of you with my back in a fight. We all do despite not being heroes or noble idealists. Which is better, because we don't do it out of duty or anything that can be corrupted or argued. No matter what any of you might think, it's because we pay that coin we have back and forth, because it's the only thing worth itself.

We keep our contracts because the Employer buys that coin when we are hired. And so long as they pay it back we are theirs. We keep the annals, the records of Brothers past whatever their deeds, because they've paid the coin and we pay it back. We pay it between ourselves freely, asking everything of our Brothers in the Company and they give it to us, because we in turn give everything back. That Trust is what has kept the Company alive, what makes the darkest deed or cruelest act worth the cost. That coin of Trust is worth more than any treasure, worth more than pride or honour.

And now, the Captain has asked for more than ever before. To pay the Brothers of the company in that coin of trust, to bear the cost no matter how high for us, so that the Company can not just survive but to do everything possible that we all survive with it. I know that what she asks will cost us all a lot, it already costs me so much that I can hardly bear the thought. If I didn't have that coin to pay it with I would be unable to face it.

Your fellow Brothers who fell in battle are being asked to pay that coin one last time. Much as the dead remembered in the annals pay it to us with their wisdom, experience, and remind us of the debt we owe for the hard choices they made for the company. Our fallen brothers are being asked to stand and fight one last time. Raised as the undead.
>>
>>1839898
Thats a nice speach

I was late to the show but couldnt they just combine the bodies to make lest but biger undead with riseing our dead?

Well looks like jenny is gona get somw fight next round
>>
>>1839898
I cannot help myself seeing this as asking more than what is reasonable of our Brothers. It's more than could be asked of anyone BUT Family. They fought in life, and deserve to rest in death. They paid that coin back in full at their last.

The Black Company has always paid that coin back. The first time it doesn't is when it truly dies and is replaced by something that might look like it but that's all. My Brothers, you might be the hardiest and sneakiest bastards to ever make someone else die for their cause, but none of us can survive that.

So we will ask the Fallen among us to fight for us again. We'll know that it's unreasonable. Even if every one of them would do so willingly despite us not wanting to ask that of them. We'll know that we'll owe them everything and more. And we'll pay them in the only coin worth it, in holding to that Trust we had in them while they were alive. We will remember them in the annals. We will continue to pay the coin no matter the cost, to whoever pays us with it. We will never tarnish its value by trading it for anything less than itself, so that it always remains worthy of the cost they paid for it.

It won't be our honour, although we will honour it. It won't be our pride, although we will refuse to shame it. It won't even be a debt, because we will always pay it back.

It will simply continue to be who we are, the extra pay received by the Brothers of The Black Company. The bond that makes us what we are. The best damned Bastards to fight beside, the worst to fight against, Soldiers who live and wonder why, who are remembered so may fall but never die, who cost a lot but do the job and if they aren't the best they're still whose left when it's time to get paid.

I like this speech and if mask is tells us something it's that the undead have some recolection from their past lives. It will be a great moment if the risen black company fougth along side their brethen and protected the living with their bodies.
But that is just me being hopefull.

Eh. I honestly don't see Prince really doing a speech that long. Maybe doing it in part with the Annalist though who really should get more screen time. Also this is kind of the Annalists job.

In the Black Company the Annalist is usually the Banner Bearer before getting the job, and the "second" to the Captain. Often it's a position that the successor to the Captain is given for a time as part of their grooming for the position. It teaches them both the history of the Company as well as how it's held together for so long by being a "family". The importance of the one coin they spend for each other, the trust that it'll be returned no matter what.

"The Company was often wealthy, but never rich. Making money was never its true purpose anyways."

It also serves as practical education for how the company dealt with fighting different forces tactically and strategically. Usually by being bastards who were tricky and vicious. Like. Letting Vampires slaughter villages to feast on blood is pushing it, but say disrupting a sealed horror from time past so that it rampages through the enemy forces is fine. Or having mages that are fairly weak do things like cast illusions among the enemy, or booby traps, or gathering wasps and pests and sedating them with magic then releasing in the enemy formations.

So I mean. Morale is sort of the annalists job.
>>
>>1839938
The points I want to make are a) Well we're all bastards and we know it, b) in spite of that the amount of trust they have in each other is complete because c) that trust is always repaid both between troops but also up and down the chain of command, completely. So d) Kiranova wouldn't do this unless it was necessary, and that even though it's not really okay to raise the fallen it can be forgiven not because we would do it ourselves or even because it's necessary, but because that complete trust has always been repaid and so long as it continues to always be repaid then we can give them back what we asked of them, even after death.

Everything. The Company just has to be willing to pay everything when asked, and so it can ask everything in return.

Lt. Hawk was hung because he broke that trust. When he was asked for everything, he said no. It wasn't just refusing an order, it was refusing to do whatever needed to protect his Brothers in The Black Company. He didn't even stand against raising them all but just his men.

Refusing Kiranova flat out would have been one thing. He put his values and his men above the Company, and refused the order based on that.

If the Company does something dark but necessary, they all do it together. You can't stand back and say you're too good for that, you're too good for them.

If his men refused, I would put then in the most dangerous position until they all died and then raised them.
>>
>>1839938
I mean we already gave someone serving after death. Who would turn on their Brother and tell him his sacrifice and aid wasn't wanted when it was needed.
>>
And its not like we do it all the time
And arfter this i dont think we would be able to.

Kinda want for teh next round have drums beening played and we all do the dark fathers words in a chanting black toung?
Mybe call the undead as the death company?
>>
>>1839975
Saint can also once its finaly over give them there finaly rest
>>
Very nice.

Although its a tad long, a condensed version will provide a great bonus to preventing or reducing the Discipline penalty.

The 4th Infantry would mutiny for the death of their own beloved LT right now if not for the fact that they are trapped. But this may sway the rest around, or bring them back from the edge at least.
even if the Company survives this, Lt Prince will always be watching his back around the 4th. For the game of thrones fans, they view you and Kiranova as akin to the Mountain and Cersei. We shall yet see how accurate that turns out to be.
>>
>>1841655
If we actually do this right, Kiranova might just promote us out of the 7th despite what we want. Because we understand.
>>
No matter the autistic salt and screeches one thing can be said here.

Forgotten is a damn good QM and writer.

As polarizing as the choice was the results really made me feel something, which is a lot more than most other quests on this board.

The fact that both sides had a point probably factored into that.
>>
>>1841655
There is a solid chance I won't make the beginning of the next quest, so people should feel free to try their hand at it.
>>
>>1841655
Also we should get the annalist to talk to them as well.

>>1841980
Agreed.

I'll be pretty sad when this Quest is over.
