The gang had a fun day at the beach, and nothing bad happened to justify this melancholy thread image.

TODAY:
Whitaker and Weiss finally get some quality time.

Whit, Whit, he's our man!
If he can't do it, no one can!
>>
Weiss is tapping a finger against her crossed arms as she absorbs everything you told her. You and your sister, at your insistence, are spending a few days, at the very least, away from the team. You told Blake and Penny it was to buy you time to work through this latest discovery with Weiss, and while that certainly is part of it, another part was being able to sleep. The swell of emotions that accompanied and prompted your acceptance of Blake’s past had given way to a tingling paranoia that you had assumed left your team once you learned the truth about Penny.

You couldn’t help it. The sensation of danger was constant around her now that you knew, and during the entire walk back to the beach you had been coiled with unconsciously summoned tension. You aren’t sure if she noticed, but you hope not. Some part of you is scared of how she’ll react, the resolution she built crumbling due to a single flinch. Another part is simply scared of Blake. That’s an uncomfortable position to be in. In all of your fantasies about joining a team of Huntsmen, you never imagined being afraid of one of them.

“I don’t understand.” Weiss’s voice cuts through your daydreaming and brings you back into the hotel room you shared. Currently, you mean. You had paid for separate rooms. She shakes her head at a spot on the floor as she works through your mentality.

“I know why you’re nice to Whitley. He’s family, and that means something, even if he is insufferable. I know why you’re nice to father, for the same reasons. I don’t know why you’re so… Relaxed with strangers you’ve never met, but I don’t question it. It’s what makes you Whitaker, really. To be honest, I admire that.” You can see where she’s going with this from a mile away, but you can’t stop yourself from smiling. Weiss never lays out her feelings like this to anyone else, and it’s always nice to know she’s got something good to say about you.

(CONTINUED)

“But this isn’t like you. You’re calm, not uncaring. You don’t brush things off when they go wrong, but this is WAY beyond wrong, and you aren’t DOING anything about it!” Weiss’s voice is beginning to rise as she reaches the emotional crux of her internal conflict. Her gaze leaves the floor and settles on you, and the crossed arms separate to gesture along with her questioning, “There was someone in the White Fang, someone who wanted to kill us, in our room! On our team! Why don’t you care?!”

>A) Even if you don’t feel as sure as you’d like, you’re the team leader. You can’t afford to second guess yourself, it could destabilize the team. “I don’t care because it’s over. It has been for months. She left, Weiss. Everyone deserves a second chance.”
>B) She’s your sister. If there’s anyone on the team you can confide in, it’s Weiss. “To be honest with you… I’m scared. Trying to pretend it never happened isn’t making me feel any better, but I’d be even more afraid of what I’d be if I didn’t even give her a chance.”
>C) Point out the obvious. Weiss always has trouble working through things when she’s upset. “If anything was going to happen, it would have happened by now. She slept next to us for almost six months.”
>D) Why did you decide to help Blake? You can’t recall what, exactly, you were thinking at the time, but now that you’ve had some time to think it over… [Write In]

Just because you're- Wait a minute. Why is it whenever Blake is involved, you guys pick B? What the fuck is it with Blake and option B? Is it just because she's the only character whose name is likely to share the first letter with our choices or what?

Anyway, writing!

You've been doing your best as a leader. It hasn't been perfect. You've accepted blame when you didn't need to and hid things from your team. Maybe it's time to try a different approach. “To be honest with you…” It’s hardly a monumental task to simply tell your sister how you feel, but nonetheless, you struggle to continue. Weiss takes note of the lurch in your voice, and the panic that was slowly beginning to color her features as the discussion went on fades completely, to be replaced by concern. You swallow the small lump in your throat and try again.

“I’m scared.” The confession draws a small intake of breath that you wouldn’t have heard if you hadn’t been expecting it. You hadn’t told Weiss how much your kidnapping had scared you. Even your near-misses with the White Fang didn’t elect those words from you. It wasn’t that the experiences hadn’t terrified you, but when it was over, it was over. You didn’t have to worry about seeing Torchwick in class the next day. On second thought, that would be better. At least you could fight Torchwick if he HAD shown up again.

“Trying to pretend it never happened isn’t making me feel any better, but I’d be even more afraid of what I’d be if I didn’t even give her a chance.” With your feelings on the matter laid out, Weiss rushes to cover them. She takes a seat on the bed beside you and lays a gentle hand on your shoulder. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you,” she swears, “and I guess… You did what you thought was right. Like you always do.” The small smile she had built up slips away, as does her steadying hand, and she falls back on the hotel mattress with a frustrated sigh. “I still think it’s a bad idea to just keep it to ourselves, but I know how you are, so I won’t bother asking.”

You mimic her flop, without the sigh, and the two of you spend a moment staring at nothing on the ceiling before you think of something you should probably mention. “While I’m being honest,” you start, “I need to tell you something else.” Weiss hums a question, and you glance over to see her eyes closed. She must have been trying to calm down and lured herself into a half-nap.

“I’ve known Blake was a Faunus for three months.” The bed rocks as Weiss rockets upwards into a sitting position and whirls to stare at your prone form.

“Are you serious! Is there anything else you forgot to tell me?!”

>A) Why not? It’s not like she’ll believe you. “Yeah, Penny’s a robot.”
>B) This entire secret keeping business blew up in your face with this. Of course, you couldn’t have predicted Blake was former White Fang, but you also have no idea what Penny’s handlers are planning. It may best to let her know sooner rather than later. “Give me a second, I have to talk to Penny.”
>C) Keep your mouth shut. “Nope, that was it.”

Don't really like any of those options. I'd go for B if it didn't immediately out Penny as keeping a fairly serious secret. That one is classified. There is an Atlas government stamp on this file saying 'no, Whit, you do not get to tell people about this.' Talking to Penny about it is fine. Telling Weiss Penny is involved first is very much not.
So,
>D) Yes, but this one I am legally not allowed to tell anyone without permission.

“Hold on, I need to…” Actually, it’d be a bad idea to tell Weiss who you were about to call. If Penny doesn’t agree, it’d out her as having a secret. “... Use the bathroom,” you finish, and swing yourself up to rush into the safety of the porcelain bunker. You fish your scroll out of your pocket and dial Penny’s number, and after only a ring or two, she picks up.

“Hello, Whitaker! Are you and Weiss coming back from your vacation?” Her chipper voice and, apparently, honest question makes the corner of your mouth twitch.

“No, Penny. And we aren’t on vacation, we’re still in Vale. I’m just calling to ask you something.”

“I am doing well, thank you! I believe Blake is okay as well, but she seemed upset when I answered you. She told me to tell you she is not here.” There’s a moment where neither of you speak, and then you hear Penny’s voice from slightly further away. She must have covered the receiver. “Blake! I told Whitaker you are not here!”

That wasn’t what you were going to ask at all, but there’s no reason to point that out to her. “That’s good to hear, Penny. Let me know when she gets back,” you can’t stop yourself from grinning in the mirror as you imagine how Blake is taking Penny’s fumble. You were going to miss them expecting her to act like a normal human being when they found out the truth.

“Penny? I think it’s time to let someone else know about… You.” The silence that follows is crushing, but eventually Penny responds in a small voice, “Why?”

“This thing with Blake and the White Fang… It hasn’t gone over well. It almost broke this team. I don’t know if we can survive another surprise like that, and you and I both know another one is coming.” There’s another long, pregnant pauses.

“I think… I think you’re right… I’ve been thinking about it for a few months now, but I wasn’t sure… Are you going to tell Weiss?”

“That’s the idea.”

“Should I tell Blake?”

You close the bathroom door with a thunk and step out to see Weiss on your bed and looking at her scroll. Given what you can see from the transparent rear of the screen, you’d guess it was a news report on another White Fang attack in Atlas. You approach, apparently unnoticed, and gently push her hands together to close the scroll. “I need to tell you something.”

“What?” Weiss tucks her scroll away and sits up, eye level with you when you take a seat in one of the chairs provided. “It’s about Penny,” you begin, but you’re interrupted by an outraged gasp. “You’ve got to be KIDDING me, Whitaker! Have you honestly been hiding secrets about everyone from me?!” Weiss is, there really isn’t a more eloquent way to put it, pissed. She’s pushed herself up from her seated position and has gone pink in anger, lips pulled back into a genuine snarl.

She had been pretty calm so far during your stay at Beacon, but you recognize this. This isn’t Weiss when she wants to make a point, and it isn’t Weiss when she wants something. This is Weiss when she’s angry. You don’t like her when she’s angry. “I made a promise to both of them, Weiss. You know I don’t break promises.” It forces her sneer into an angry pout, but it isn’t much better. “Fine, but this had better be good!” she demands.

“Alright… Penny is a robot.” You can’t think of any other way to phrase or dance around it. Weiss is stunned into silence, her jaw hanging in disbelief at what you just said. “What. Whitaker, if this is supposed to be some kind of joke, it’s very bad timing!” She’s working herself up again, so you lean forward and hold you gaze against hers, fingers steepled in your lap. “Weiss. I swear to you, on our grandfather’s grave, Penny is a robot.”

She sputters a series of incoherent noises before biting down on them. Weiss is motionless for a few moments, staring at you with a frozen expression of confusion and scrutiny, before it dissolves into another angry glare. “This isn’t funny, Whitaker. This is NOT funny!” Weiss flings her feet off your bed and stomps towards the door. You flinch at the sound of it slamming, and again a second later when the door across the hall mimics the sound. You… Really messed that up. Maybe you shouldn’t have brought up Grandfather.

>A) Go talk to her now. Stewing on it isn’t going to help anyone, and you really do need to make her understand the truth about Penny.
>B) Let her cool off for tonight and go to bed. Weiss only got angry because she was already upset about Blake.

It’s not going to be fun, but you should settle this with Weiss before it gets out of hand. Grandfather is a soft spot for both of you. You step into the hall and knock on Weiss’s door. You don’t get an answer, but you do get a sense of deja vu. “Weiss,” you call into the door crack, “I’m not leaving until you aren’t mad at me.” You get a mumbled call back with three distinct syllables. She either said “It’s unlocked” or “Go away.” You give the knob a twist and the door opens without further fanfare.

The room is a perfect mirror of yours, save for Weiss’s scowling form glaring at you from a chair. “If you’re here to apologize, then get on with it,” she tells you, but her tone is dismissive, not angry. You hope that’s as bad as this second attempt at a conversation gets. “You know me, Weiss. I care about Grandfather, and his legacy, as much as you do.”

“Then why are you joking around with it?” she huffs, her arms crossing again as she leans back in her chair. “I’m not,” you tell her, and she rolls her eyes. “Please. You expect me to believe Penny, Penny Polendina, only daughter of the most famous engineer in Atlas, is a robot?”

“The most famous roboticist in Atlas,” you point out. “He’s made her for the military. I think she’s the next step in Ironwood’s ‘no risk to human life’ policy. A prototype.” You pull out your scroll and send a quick message, and let Weiss continue to debate you.

“Why would they send a prototype to Beacon? Atlas has a-” She cuts herself off by raising both of her hands and pushing herself up by the armrests. “No. No, I am not going to get into a debate about the logistics of secret android huntresses. Because those don’t exist, Whitaker. That’s just insane.” You scroll buzzes, and you whip it out to confirm it’s what you wanted. It is, and you flip the image towards Weiss without a word.

“Oh, that’s cute. You got someone to draw up ‘schematics,’ I didn’t know you had any artist friends.” Weiss’s sarcastic tone and expression dies as her eyes flick over the name of the contact who sent the message.

>>
>>1825527
“Why did Winter have this?” You hand her the scroll so that she can look over the image in detail while you explain. “In case of emergency,” you reply, “If Penny gets injured, we need a complete map of her systems to be able to fix her without drawing attention.” Weiss’s eyes are growing wider by the second, and she’s gone pale. It’s hard to tell with your family, but she’s definitely pale.

“That’s an official Atlas Military seal… It’s real… Oh my God, this is real, isn’t it?” You give her a quick nod, and she collapses onto her bed. “We’re on a team with a terrorist and a… A robot…” You give her a sympathetic look before turning back towards her door, your scroll in hand. “Let’s sleep on it,” you tell her, flicking the light off. You get a groan in response, and in your rapidly adjusting vision, you can see Weiss’s eyes are still wide open. “Good night.”

You return to your room with a slight buzzing in the back of your skull. You made much progress just now. Everyone’s secrets (as far as you know) have been swept away in just under twenty-four hours, leaving your team confused, hurt, and afraid. But still together. There’s a poignant phrase that applies to this situation. The only way left is up. Still, even with your new found optimism, it’s best to keep Weiss separated from the team and you from Blake right now. So, how are you and your sister spending day two of your vacation?

>A) A kidnapping and near-team-shattering event has taught you one thing: Whitaker Schnee does not take breaks. You’ll spend tomorrow making sure all of Torchwick’s assets are locked down and accounted for.

I want to go with option A out of sheer practicality, but I think it'd be meta-gamey bullshit for Whitaker to go THAT far after already putting up with so much. Real people need rest, and should expect that others can handle their fucking jobs. Winter and the police and whoever else should be dealing with Torchwick. Neo almost killed Whit, but he doesn't know that.

You throw off your covers and go through your usual morning routine of dressing, brushing, and washing yourself to your typical standards. It takes more time than usual, and while you aren’t planning to rest on your laurels, there’s no schedule for you to keep to, so it doesn’t bother you to slow down a little. A few knocks on Weiss’s door rouses her, but she takes much longer than you do. By the time she steps out, ready but still yawning into her hand, you’ve beaten almost half of your latest download on your scroll.

The two of you walk up and down the streets of Vale, checking on places like the warehouse you were kept in and the club Junior ran, as well as anywhere that turns up when you ask people where men dressed in Junior’s colors could be found. Most of them weren’t willing to say, or didn’t know, but the few who were willing and able give you enough addresses to whittle away the morning.

With the Valish sun beating down on your backs, you and Weiss take a lunch break to grab something to eat. Preferably something as cold as Atlas’s outer walls. The ice cream parlor you walk into feels like home, but with more color and friendlier faces. The two of you get your orders from a short girl behind the counter, who for some reason wouldn’t stop glaring daggers at you even as you paid her. Maybe you interrupted her break.

“So, has you marching us all around Vale actually accomplished anything?” Weiss asks between small spoonfuls. “Sure,” you reply, “Now we know where they aren’t hiding.” Your sister rolls her eyes and groans at your pedantic answer.

“Whitaker, we’ve made absolutely no progress! I don’t even know what you think we’re DOING! Torchwick is in jail, Junior is in jail, and everywhere and everyone related to those two has been taken into custody!”

“Not everyone.” Despite only one sentence interrupting Weiss, there are two voices speaking. You lean around your sister to spot a pair of girls in matching outfits, mirrored by color. The rest of them is identical, and if they aren’t twins, then neither are you and Weiss. “Can we help you?” you ask, already reaching for your stored weapon.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1825740
“Yeah, actually, we were looking for the pair of losers who got our boss thrown in jail.” The white one’s voice grates on your ears, and the unpleasant sensation is capped by Red popping her gum loud enough to make you flinch. As if you didn’t have enough of a reason to fight.

These two are obviously working for either Roman or Junior, a theory confirmed when they lower themselves into a fighting stance and Red’s wrists dispense two hidden blades each. White shift her feet slightly, already angling for a kick aimed roughly at the mid section, and the movement making light glint off of the steel making up her heels. You stand and draw Langerdorn, Weiss and Myrtenaster right behind you. Twins versus twins. You really should have expected this at some point.

The parlor doesn’t have much in the way of cover unless you plan on flipping the tables over, but you can’t spot any barrels on their weapons. Do these two just not carry guns? If not, then your next obvious concern is space. The tables are crammed into each other, and it’ll be damn near impossible to take advantage of Langerdorn’s reach with them in the way. It’s probably why they waited for you and Weiss to enter a building before attacking.

The White twin rushes you while the Red one attacks Weiss, and while you can keep her at bay for a few moments, your attempts to avoid tripping as you backpedal create openings for her to chip away at your aura with deadly kicks. You’d prefer to end this fight with minimal damage to the store, but if she’s not going to make it an option…

You focus on defending yourself, intentionally slowing your counter attacks to force her to be more aggressive. As soon as she overextends her leg to reach you, you twist Langerdorn and jab it forward, catching her stomach with the shaft. Conventional experience would usually make you immediately pull back to begin winding the next strike, but this time you continue to push with everything you and your aura can give.

You sweep the White twin off of her feet and through the window. It takes only half a second for the glass to settle, and when it does, you’ve taken a position in the window frame, ready and waiting for her counter attack. It doesn’t come, and you see her lying face down and motionless on the sidewalk in a pile of broken glass.

You’re certain that anyone with aura could have taken that hit without issue, but she still isn’t moving. There’s a chill in your spine as you consider the implications. You didn’t go all out against a girl without aura, did you?! You hop out of the window and into the street to stand over your former enemy. You still can’t see any movement, not even a twitch. Winter, and your instructors at Beacon have repeatedly drilled in that you shouldn’t move anyone you suspect of being injured. You haven’t had the proper training and you could aggravate the injury. Those lessons melt away at the sight of a motionless body, so you grab her shoulder and flip her onto her back.

She still doesn’t respond, and you lean in, placing your ear directly over her nose and mouth. You hold your breath and wait for a relieving sigh of air, but it doesn’t come. Panic starts to grip your heart. The only way you know to resuscitate someone who isn’t breathing is CPR, and you aren’t even sure if it applies in this situation. Isn’t CPR for drowning? There’s no time to debate yourself!

Every second you waste is a second she’s going without oxygen, so you take a deep breath and press your lips against hers. You push the air in your lungs into her mouth, but you’re surprised when air pushes back. You choke on your own life-saving breath and let it out in a pained groan. It takes you a moment to recognize what happened. It had been years since someone had done it, but a man never forgets the sensation of a knee in the gonads. You fall to your side and clutch at your injury while your patient pushes herself off the ground in a mad scramble to get away from you.

“What the hell is WRONG with you!?” You get the feeling she’d say more, but she’s too busy wiping at her mouth to use it properly. With nothing to concentrate on but either the pain or how close a serrated heel had been to your tenderness, your mind takes the third option of putting together what had happened. She must have been holding her breath, playing dead until you would have turned your back. She didn’t expect you to try and save her. Though from her reaction, you don’t think she realized your intentions.

An aura backed knee with your defenses lowered leaves you floored long enough for the White twin to regain her composure. She steps towards you with murder in her eyes, but you never get a chance to see what she has planned. Another small white form collides with her, sending your enemy to the ground and leaving Weiss standing tall in her place. This time, the other twin stays down.

Weiss spends a moment taking in your situation, and to her credit, she manages to keep a straight face for a few seconds before the giggling starts. “Shut up and call the police…” you groan. You remove one of your hands and try to push yourself up, but the attempt sends a wave of nausea through you and you amend your statement.

“Call an ambulance…”

>>
>>1833996
If you do the math, a Best of Five would have made that roll a literal 99.99% chance of success. It was already a 98.85%. There was only a 1,15% chance of failing and, amazingly, you guys did. The DC was really low.

A Best of 5 means Whitaker never fails again, full stop.

Pretty much this. The point of rolling dice at all is that we're taking a chance. No need to dilute that with more rolls.

If anything, I wouldn't mind doing just two rolls for an extremely difficult task...

You are, once again, sitting in the police department, though this time in Winter’s temporary office rather than one of the less inviting interview rooms. You're nursing a bruise on your arm with an ice pack, despite Winter’s insistence you use it elsewhere. You don’t care how much swelling you have, you are not groping yourself in front of your sisters. Winter is updating something on her computer while Weiss sits and looks as far away from you as she can without making it obvious. At least she’s trying to be nice about your defeat.

The two of you, and Winter, are waiting for a man you didn’t expect to see for at least another few weeks: Headmaster Ozpin. According to Winter, he had made a request to speak to all of you only moments after Weiss’s call to the police went through, and so the two of you had been taken along with the other set of twins, albeit in a different car. And without restraints.

You can’t imagine what he may want to talk to you about, and the idle speculation you’re coming up with isn’t very probable. Of course, that’s not the only question on your mind right now…

“Winter?” You ask, breaking the not-uncomfortable silence that had settled over the three of you. She hums in acknowledgement, not breaking eye contact with her work.

“Does it count, if- uh…” You trail off, not sure how to phrase your concern. Winter would know if CPR would count, but just coming out and asking made you feel foolish before you had even finished the question. It shouldn’t, right? Then again, what SHOULD be and what would concern whoever you did share that moment with were two different things. Did it count to girls?

“Yes?” Winter is waiting for a question, even taking her eyes off the screen to look at you and see if you were okay. You lose your nerve. You shouldn’t be asking for advice about girls at your age. “Nevermind,” you wave her off, and your older sister seems fine with returning to her work. The next few minutes of silence are slightly less comfortable than they were before you spoke, and while it’s not unbearable, you do feel a quiet, subdued relief when Winter informs you that Ozpin has arrived and wants to speak with you first.

You take a small journey to another interview room, where Ozpin waits inside slowly sipping on a cup of coffee. He gestures for you to take a seat with a half nod and a warm smile, so you do.

“You are quite difficult to get a hold of, Mr. Schnee. I’ve been meaning to have this talk for a few days now, but it felt… Inappropriate to bring certain topics up at the foot of your hospital bed.” The words set you on edge, despite the radiating calm from your professor. “I thought I’d give you a day or so to get settled, but when I approached your teammates, they informed me that you and your sister would be spending some time away from your dorm. It’s nothing unusual, many of our students take the summer off to return to their families.” He sets his mug aside, slowly and deliberately.

“But that isn’t why the two of you left. You didn’t even return to Atlas. And given what I’ve been meaning to ask you, young man, it makes it very difficult to believe you had innocent reasons for taking this vacation from campus.” You swallow involuntarily. Despite looking, for all the world, like a friendly teacher in his early middle ages, Ozpin seemed incredibly intimidating at the moment.

“During your kidnapping, there was a massive and violent incident. A confrontation involving the gang you were held prisoner by and another, smaller group. Many people were injured.” He lets his words hang before clasping his hands on the table, “A few were… Worse. Perpetrators from both sides were captured and interrogated. This ‘Junior’s’ men claimed ignorance as to what had sparked the conflict, but a few of the other group confessed to be operating under the orders of a man they call ‘Snow.’ They were to find someone - you.”

“I would like nothing more than to believe you were entirely innocent of any wrongdoing, Whitaker, but your flight into the city, to go who knows where for who knows why creates very unfortunate implications and leads me to very uncomfortable questions. We’ll begin with the easiest.”

“Why did you leave campus immediately after your ordeal?”

>A) Tell the truth. “I didn’t feel safe around my team.” Of course, Ozpin will want to know why...
>B) Tell the slightly modified truth. “I didn’t feel safe in the dorm. I mean, it is where I was taken...”
>C) Provide an innocent lie. “It’s summer, sir. I just wanted to enjoy my vacation somewhere without teachers and homework.”
>D) Provide a less innocent lie that will throw him far off of Penny and Blake’s tracks. “I had to meet a few people.”

“I didn’t feel safe in the dorm,” you say, as Ozpin takes advantage of the break on his side of the conversation to sip at his coffee. He fixes his eyes on you as he takes a particularly deep drink, and you feel something inside you break. That wasn’t enough. “I mean, it was where I was taken…” Ozpin nods into his mug and sets it aside once again.

“A reasonable response, Mr. Schnee. I wouldn’t feel very safe after such an ordeal myself. I hope you understand that we’ll be taking the appropriate measures to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again. You should have nothing to worry about in the coming semesters.” You relax a little, mentally. It seems as if Ozpin is letting that point go without further observation, and that means Penny and Blake’s secrets are safe.

“Now, as for my next concern… Why would this ‘Snow’ be so concerned with your safety? Hardened criminals rarely so altruistic as to turn vigilante with no immediate benefit.” Damn your father and his stupid, stupid alias.

>A) Offer yourself as the cause and keep Ozpin from wondering who Snow is. “He came because I asked him to. We met not too long after I came to Vale, I was desperate, and I guess he thought a Schnee owing him one would be useful.”
>B) Tell a version of the truth. “He was concerned because we’re family.”

“He was concerned because we’re family,” you shrug. It’s not as if his terrible nickname didn’t give that away. Ozpin hums into his hands before asking his follow up question. “Your father?” he guesses, correctly, but you were expecting that. “It would be a scandal like no other if the head of the SDC was caught dealing with low lives, sir. He’s an uncle, or cousin, I forget which. Descends from Nicholas Schnee’s uncle, in any case.” The Schnees, before your Grandfather built the SDC, were a very fertile family. It’s likely you really DID have a cousin involved in the underworld in Vale, though it’s equally likely that such a cousin would have no idea who he was technically related to.

Ozpin hums in non-answer to your assertion. You don’t think he believes you, but he’s got no reason to call you out for lying. “It’s good to hear that my fears were unfounded,” he says after a short silence. “I’d like to apologize for anything I may have implied of you, Whitaker, but you must understand that I and the Council take the criminal elements of Vale very seriously.” You nod along, happy to have worked your way out of the conversation mostly unscathed. Ozpin almost certainly know you were hiding things from him, but it seems as though he’s either already got the answers or thinks he does. Either way, he shouldn’t be bothering you again.

You step out of the room and into the hallway, on your way to Winter’s office again. The light, airy feeling you get from escaping further scrutiny by Ozpin fades as you begin to worry what you may have given away. Ozpin’s questions seemed to have a deeper meaning than the words themselves imply. The only connecting themes between the two questions were you and your kidnapping, and Ozpin should be well aware of the reasons behind the kidnapping. So was it you? Then something else occurs to you.

Ozpin had asked for your sisters, too. He was talking to every Schnee in Vale. About ‘Snow’? About you? You aren’t sure, but whatever his reasons, your family is involved.

It has been a few days since your talk with Ozpin. In the interim, you’ve interrogated (and been interrogated by) Weiss what feels like hundreds of times. You’re surprised to learn that she had kept Blake’s secret safe, but her reasoning doesn’t leave you feeling inspired. “She’s your pet project, Whitaker, I’m not going to get in your way,” was the gist of several conversations hounding your sister’s motivations for, in any way, protecting Blake. It did carry an unspoken second sentiment, hidden in sarcastic bites: “I’ll just be here to rub your nose in it when it blows up.”

You don’t even bother asking about Penny. If Weiss is as smart as you think she is, and you’ve got no reason to doubt that, then she knows how much trouble it would cause letting the Headmaster of Beacon know the truth. If he didn’t already, you concede, always a possibility. Why would Atlas risk being discovered attempting to develop stealth combat androids? Because discovery wouldn’t carry any consequences. It’s just a theory at this point, but you’re as sure as you can be without being told the truth outright.

You would like to say your conversations with Winter had been just as, if not informative, smooth. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to do that until you actually HAVE a conversation with Winter. As soon as she left her talk with Ozpin, she hustled you and Weiss into a car and drove you back to your hotel, barely stopping to wish you a good night. You appreciated the lift, but it was obvious that something Ozpin had said worried her. So much so that you hadn’t been able to get into contact with her until this morning, when another message from her number invited you and Weiss to the same cafe on Daylily.

“I’m leaving for Atlas in a few hours.” Neither of you object or gasp with shock at the fact. It’s what you’ve been expecting. She was only here to help with Roman, after all, and he’s been taken care of. Still, some part of you feels… Empty. A familiar sensation, despite you only having felt it once before. When Winter joined Atlas Academy. It’s not as bad now as it was then, of course, but it’s definitely there, and judging by the uncomfortable look on Weiss’s face, she feels it too.

You hate seeing Winter leave. You had seen it a lot, and you hated it every time. You know she’ll have to at some point, but does it really have to be now? “Are you sure?” you ask, “We’ve got a vacancy in our hall.” You jerk a thumb in the direction of the hotel, and while Winter smiles at the suggestion, the brightness doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “I’m afraid not,” she tells you, “I still have work to do.”

“Don’t you still have some vacation days?” Weiss asks, a slight whine to her voice. You had done the same thing in this very booth a few months ago, unfortunately for Weiss. Winter snaps a sharp look towards your twin, cutting off that avenue of persuasion before the two of you can gang up on her. “I have to go home, and that’s that,” she says with an air of final authority. Weiss cows a bit, being the one under the full force of Winter’s persuasive methods, but you’re still brave enough to test the waters.

“Why? Is something wrong?” Winter’s eyes match your gaze now and give Weiss a break. Winter may have clamped down on your usual opening move, but she can’t stop you from widening your eyes and faking a small tremble in your lips. She flinches, only barely, but that’s all you need to know you’ve won. “There are some… Concerns…” she sighs, but she finishes with a strong inflection, “Concerns that I can put to rest. I just have to be in Atlas to do it.”

You’d like to argue against that, but it feels as if there is weight behind these ‘concerns’ that can’t be put off for family time. As much as you love Winter, and having her around, you aren’t the type of person to put what you want above what’s best. “Alright,” you concede, “Then I guess it’s for the best…” You see Weiss nodding in agreement, and Winter lets out another small sigh.

“I’m glad you understand. I know we haven’t had much of a chance to talk since I’ve arrived, and I regret that, but this isn’t something that can be put off.”

You and Weiss nod again, accepting the vague explanation. It isn’t the full details that you wanted, but at least you know there’s a reason behind Winter’s departure. Things settle into silence as you look over the menu, wondering what you’ll get for Winter’s impromptu “going away” meal, but you’re interrupted before you can make up your mind.

“Speaking of putting things off…” Winter begins, “I’ve been meaning to ask: How have your summoning exercises been going?” Weiss let’s out a small intake of breath before she can suppress it. You’re only slightly better off. You think your hand may have twitched. The two of you have been dreading this conversation for some time now, because…

--------

“Concentrate!” You are concentrating, but all you feel changing is the blood pressure in your forehead. You’ve gone through all the steps and examples she laid out for you all those years ago. Clear your mind, picture a canvas, paint the summon on it. Step through a window beside your summon. Imagine shattering glass. Think of a little rubber duck.

Then something changes. You feel yourself sway forward, and the sensation is just different enough for you to open your eyes, hoping against hope that this time, things will be different. No such luck, you’re afraid. The pavilion is as bare and empty as it was when you had first stepped up, and now that your mind is clear of nonsensical mental tricks, you recognize the sensation that had led to your misjudgment. You had been holding your breath and almost passed out without realizing it. Again.

The sigh behind you feels as though it weighs a hundred pounds. It settles on your shoulders as Winter speaks, “Alright, Weiss, your turn.” You leave your position and take a seat beside Winter, who hands you a bottle of water. You watching your sister’s attempts with a bored - leaning on despairing - expression. This cycle of failure always depresses you. You have no idea how Winter was able to recreate Nicholas Schnee’s feats of summoning without the old man himself to train her, but it made you respect your sister even more, even if that same wonder made you feel like an even bigger failure.

You're taken by a sudden, almost feral rejection of the idea. Whitaker Schnee is *not* a failure. There must be some way to summon, you’ve already proven a hundred times over that you have the semblance. You just need to try harder…

>A) Despite the steps you and Weiss go through being based on Winter’s own experience recreating the art of summoning, you had never sat your older sister down to ask, in detail, how she had done it. Now was a good time.
>B) Winter’s methods simply aren’t working, at least not for you. You need to try something new, something totally different. After all, it may be the Schnee family semblance, but you’re the one wielding it.
>C) It may not have anything to do with the methods. Maybe it’s a psychological thing? Something you haven’t dealt with, that’s stopping you from summoning, but is so core to who you are that you don’t even notice its presence…
>D) If you and Weiss are both having trouble creating summons, then it stands to reason you and Weiss have a shared issue. Why not? You share everything else. If you can find out what’s negatively affecting both you and Weiss, you should be able to find the problem.

Sure, you can try something different, but technically speaking, flinging yourself off the Beacon Tower and hoping a hay bale catches you is “something different.” You spend the rest of the practice session pretending to go through your usual steps while trying to come up with a plan. You flitter from idea to idea until you strike upon something that sticks out to you. You know Winter very well, and you’re equally familiar with her summons. There’s only one other person you know who ever used the ability: Your grandfather.

If there really is something more personal to it, then Nicholas Schnee should have a wildly different method, style, or perhaps choice of summons. After all, your mother often told her children about how jovial, yet bullheaded your grandfather was, and you loved Winter, but you’d never describe her as “jovial.” Bullheaded, maybe, but only when it mattered. Did that count?

Either way, if your theory about each Schnee needing to find their own way was true, the only leads you have are Winter and Grandfather. Just as the thought forms clearly in your mind, the sun begins to dip below the horizon and an alarm goes off. It breaks Weiss’s concentration and causes her to stumble, a reaction you make sure to mimic lest Winter catch you not paying attention.

“That’s all for today,” Winter sighs, silencing her scroll. She steps forward, positioning herself in front of both you and Weiss, and lays a hand on one of your shoulders, the other on Weiss’s.

“You’ll get it. I know you will.” Winter pulls you both into a group hug, and you feel as if you could close your eyes, open them again, and be back home, ten years younger. You and Weiss return the hug with equal force, and it lingers for a few moments before breaking off. Winter grabs the rest of the things she brought with her, a small bag and her weapon, and walks away.

You’d like to see her off at the platform, but it was currently restricted to Atlas Military personnel only, so you settle for giving her a wave as she steps into her car. It isn’t the heartfelt farewell you may have pictured, had you thought about this moment during the months she was here, but it’s good enough for now. When her car disappears into Vale, Weiss taps you on the shoulder.

“What do you want to do now?”

>A) You’ve still got your Grandfather on the brain. You could look him up on the internet. Maybe someone wrote an article about his combat days?
>B) There is no way you’re going to let Winter get away with “concerns” as an excuse. If she won’t tell you what’s going on in Atlas, maybe one of the soldiers packing up her ship will…
>C) You know you promised yourself no more breaks, but honestly, a few days of genuine R&R sound nice…
>D) You’ve still got a few questions about Roman’s heist. You’re not going to get close to Roman himself, in the prison, but maybe you don’t have to. After all, there are two girls who were decently close to him in jail right now. All you need to know are the visiting hours.

It takes days of searching. You’d be shocked and outraged if he hadn’t died years ago, but still, it’s insane that it’d be so difficult to find something about Nicholas Schnee’s life outside of the SDC. All you can find are a few records of charity work and public speeches about the value of hard work, which do speak to his character, but a semblance isn’t based on how one acts in public. You wish you could call your mother to talk about him, but you’re not entirely sure if it would be a good idea.

With how unstable she had been these past few years, you’re not sure she could take diving into memories of her beloved father. Between the unhelpful articles and the roadblock with the only living person who actually knew him, it’s a miracle that you actually manage to find an interview with him, from a small (at the time) news outlet, directly after he personally saved a town of miners from a Grimm incursion.

The cadence of the piece is familiar, almost boring. They tell him how inspiring it was, and then he humbly rejects their praise as something anyone could have done. It doesn’t get interesting until they ask him one very specific question.

Mr. Schnee, after the success of your company, you could have easily afforded to send in a team of Huntsmen to rescue this town in your stead. Why didn’t you? Why handle this personally?

Well, if I’m honest, it simply didn’t occur to me! I was already here when the Grimm made their move, and if I’m going to start something, you can be sure I’m sure going to finish it. It was a trying week, one that sure could have used a few extra swords to help me out, but in the end, the people are safe. I’m unharmed. Isn’t that what matters?

Yes, you suppose it is. So a big picture thinker, with a tendency to get wrapped up in the situation and a strong work ethic. Sounds like the type of man who could start a company as successful as his, you suppose. With that small glimpse into his personality, you compare it to a more-complete record of his combat style. Almost always, he preferred to fight alongside a trio of Ursas. According to other interviews, they were the first Grimm he had ever killed.

On the other hand, Winter was analytical and militarily inclined, with a hidden comforting nature that, as far as you were aware, only showed itself around you and Weiss. Unlike Grandfather, Winter used every sort of Grimm interchangeably, with no strong connection to them. You’re fairly sure she wouldn’t even remember where she had bested a particular Grimm.

Now, the important part… Why did they fight so differently?

>A) It’s obvious: Nicholas treated his summons like old friends because he approached combat like a hero from an old story. Heroes always have trusted companions. Winter, however, treats her summons as disposable pawns good only to serve their role in the moment and then be discarded. Each of them fights, unconsciously, like a piece of a greater whole. In Grandfather’s case, a story, and in Winter’s, a game.
>B) Winter has greater aspirations in the military, so that is how she treats her summons: Like an army. Grandfather, on the other hand, was always more of a warrior than a businessman. He summoned his first kills due to nostalgia, a longing for a time with less responsibility. They fight this way because it represents what they want.
>C) Winter doesn’t let her emotions cloud her judgment, so she puts many summons between her and the enemy. A clear view of the battlefield and a clear head to sort it out. Nicholas, on the other hand, got stuck in with both his problems and his foes, tearing them both apart through sheer force of will. He brought a bunch of bear-shaped hammers and saw many nails. They both fight with their emotions, or lack thereof.
>D) This is… Stupid. There’s no correlation between what you know about them and what they used to summon. There must be another way, something you aren’t seeing but THEY both did. Maybe it’s a better idea to ask Winter, next time you see her.
>>

If we extrapolate that, Weiss will likely treat hers like a duet partner, or a another performer on the stage.

>>1846619
It must be tied to their emotions. A semblance, for non-genetically inherited ones, was dependent on the personalities of the individual, and what were personalities but the expression of a lifetime of emotions? It makes perfect sense to you, but now comes the troubling part. What does it mean for you? Obviously, if you want to summon, you’ll have to do it more like Whitaker and less like Winter, but how are you supposed to do that? For all you know, there could have never been a person enough like you with this semblance to use as a jumping off point. Which means you’re working entirely from scratch.

Perhaps it would be better to start with Weiss? After all, people often know each other better than they know themselves. So who is Weiss? You know her as a confrontational young woman, eager and able to meet any challenge that life throws at her. Of course, Penny knows her as a standoffish Ice Queen, and Blake knows her as… Well, you didn’t want to consider it. Did the real Weiss, the one she hides from everyone, even herself, exist somewhere in the middle of all these experiences, or was that falling prey to the gray fallacy?

You set your pen down and take stock of the notes you’ve been writing, cataloging your thoughts and hypotheses on the issue. Everything you knew was laid out before you. If you were going to get anywhere else, you’d have to experiment and hope you were right. Maybe by the time you return to both your team and your school, you’ll be a better Huntsman. Or maybe, argued a small, dissident voice in the back of your mind, all this work is going to finally push you over the edge when you fail. Not likely, you think with your less pessimistic mind, but disturbingly possible.
>>
And that's it for tonight, guys. Hope the pace wasn't too slow for you. Have a good one!

Damn, went and missed the session despite having kept track of the thread for the whole first half of yesterday. Well, I wanted to say this: Brother, I really appreciate the fact that Whitaker is being so heavily affected by the events of the last couple of threads. I'd been worried that Whitaker would turn out to be a little too perfect, seeing as the players chose the best option for most of the votes around handling people and/or paranoia (not that they can really be blamed), but it's nice to see that Whitaker does have some weaknesses and flaws, and I'm really enjoying seeing the things like his fear and paranoia start to get pumped up by all the things he's going through -- I greatly enjoy it when writers give characters these sorts of things, because the character becomes much more complex and enjoyable and it's really nice to watch you do this.
>>
I don't know if anyone is around, but if you see Brother, do tell him I got that Penny Lewd finished. Sorry it took so long, but I was spending time with loved ones.

I take my smut very seriously.
>>1850238
That could be fun.

I meant that as a joke, I couldn't see Whitley opening up to that kind of brotherly bonding. But then again, maybe Whitaker could pull off some kind of bonding with him. The QM did mention a while back that our existence made the Schnees a slightly happier family.

.....Pub crawl with Uncle Ironwood and Blake's dad when? Guys night out with Whitley would turn out as hilarious as his questions about what the fuck Whit did while he was a away. Or considering how observant he is, whom he did while he was away.

Oh yessssss, I wonder who could hold the most liquor though?

Maybe Whitaker, if we roll high enough!

Would that be considered a bad thing because his mom, and most likely his dad, drink like sailors?

Indeed.

Yeah...after reading it, the Penny one first obviously, it just came of as more of a funny smut post that was mostly bland except for the puns. The Blake one felt....would blocky be the right expression? Like, some empty that it could be used as a box to be filled with something else that is in all honesty(and nothing personal about this m8) better.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Eh fair enough. I admit, in some areas I rushed on both of those, but then, the problem can be making the smut go on TOO long. I feel like I'm routinely pushing it, since I'm using going 2 pages+ on these things.

>I feel like I'm routinely pushing it,
Buddy, I read smut, even written some fairly popular smut prompts. You barely push it at all, with the minor exception to Blake's(but that was more of a requirement for sexy Blake times), and then push in the parts that are boring. Honestly the stories were too short, and the feeling of them being rushed was pretty prevalent, on the plus side your jokes were perfect...if distracting to the boner. Kind of hard to keep it up when laughing in my opinion, but that might be just me.

Hm, fair enough, if anymore get requested, I'll just have to try harder. Now to be fair, The Penny one was meant to be more funny than lewd, because...it's Penny, that whole scenario would be pretty funny I think. Then again, that particular one was the result of people joking around.
>>
>>1858872
Yeah nah, I get ya man, and your right, Penny is for funny adoralewd, not heavy fucking lewd. That comes later. Can only have so many chances to yourself when a young sexually active robot with no stop button wants to drain your balls and everything. Plus I would find it hilarious if she just says she will be fucking Whit to his sisters face. I desperately want to know how many shades of red she'll pass before turning purple. Blake would just be off in the window watching inside fingering herself watching them, until Penny feels experimental and blows her cover.

> says she will be fucking Whit to his sisters face

If I write a sequel to it, I may add this in, just because it'd be funny.
>>
>>1858933
Based comedy gold for my heart dick.

With 30% more lewd!

>The Blake one felt....would blocky be the right expression? Like, some empty that it could be used as a box to be filled with something else that is in all honesty(and nothing personal about this m8) better.
That's a good way of putting it. It's a very solid start, just needs a little fleshing out.
>>
>>1859213
I actually kind of want to do a sequel to that one with Blake embracing becoming Whitaker's 'pet'. Maybe somewhere down the line I will
>>
>>1858231
I would but you're a stranger on the internet, I don't want to start gnawing on my computer screen anon.
>>
>>1859253
Looking forward to it.
