--------------------------------------------------------------------

Your room at Camp Hancock was fairly well furnished, for a room appropriated by the OSS for your stay. At the very least you had a room in one of the few new buildings. Better than could be said for the other special operatives on the old base. At the very least it was out of the way from prying eyes, and close to the armoury.

It had been a few months since the suicide mission on the Märchenland facility, which had been a mixed bag as far as the mission's planners were concerned. The last thing that they had been expecting was for there to be survivors. And they certainly weren't expecting the wealth of information that your band of merry men had returned with. One of the Reich's newest jet aircraft and a bunch of artefacts ripped straight from the most secure facility in the entire Reich.

Not to mention the artefacts that you and Kyouko had stolen from the Märchenland facility, and the ensuing... changes that you both had undergone. Physically, the both of you remained perfectly human. Though whatever magic had afflicted the both of you had undoubtedly fixed whatever internal injuries that may have once plagued you. In you case, some minor internal scarring had disappeared completely. Of course there had been tests to verify everything, ranging from your physical fitness to the abilities that you both possessed. Tests ranging from simple PT exams, up to running massive obstacle courses while being shot at with heavy machine guns.

Both you and Kyouko were a great boon and a hindrance to the OSS. On the one hand, you both possessed capabilities that no other soldier possessed. But on the other side of the coin, you both were too much of an unknown to immediately redeploy. As such, the pair of you had resided here, with the rest of the OSS's black sheep.

Right now, you were laying in your cot. The morning sun shining through the small window and only being blocked from shining into your face by the book you were currently reading. A dull clapping sound as something was passed through the letter plate built into the door in your room.

>Get up and read through the letter, it may be important.
>Head down to the range, you might as well be productive.
>Continue reading your book, if it's something so important then they might as well send someone up to tell you in person.

Sighing and shoving a scrap piece of paper between the pages you were reading. You put the book you were reading down on the floor before levering yourself up into a seated position. You stood up and calmly walked over to the letter that had been deposited into your room, and what you had assumed was one letter was actually a pair of letters and a pair of folded notes. You picked up the assorted notes and letters and walked over to the small desk that you had been given. One of your vambraces clanging against the metal desk as you rested your hand while you reached for your canteen. And after a quick swig of water, you opened up the first letter.

The first letter was definitely the largest, but the actual message could have been compressed into a few lines. It all boiled down to that the OSS had decided to pull it's head out of it's ass and mobilise you. There was a meeting planned later in the day, just after lunch during which you would be briefed on upcoming missions.

The second letter was from your father. You had sent him a letter a few days after being shipped to America, and only now had you actually gotten a response. The letter was surprisingly short in his typical nature. He demanded to know why you were in America, which base you were at, if you were a POW or a defector. Nothing in the letter about how him and the rest of your family, though all things considered you didn't blame him for being tight lipped. You hadn't left him on a good footing.

The first note was from Logan. Your American friend having opted to join you here rather than joining back up with regular units with the other survivors. A simple question asking you if you wanted to hit the range before your mission briefing.

The final note was from your fellow, magically gifted individual, Kyouko. One word printed with a question mark.

Bar?

>Write up a letter back to your father. If the OSS kept up this kind of delay then you'd probably get a letter back by the time you returned from the mission.
>Find Logan and head down to the range. You need more practice with these OSS weapons.
>Find Kyouko, you can probably get a few drinks at the bar before the meeting.

Sighing to yourself as you got up and made to pull the small trunk out from underneath your bed, you couldn't help but think back to the letter from your father. On the one hand, you didn't blame him for his cold response. Last he had heard, you had been mobilised and were being sent to the eastern front. The last letter you had gotten from him was a demand for you not to contact him again until you had "grown a conscience" and left the Wehrmacht. But on the other, the fact that you were obviously no longer actively serving in the Wehrmacht meant that you certainly remembered what he had said in said final letter.

You quickly grabbed a plain white shirt with the gold arrowhead of the OSS on the chest. I's long sleeves were great for covering up your newly attacked vambraces. The mostly casual look wasn't typical for people on base, but like most things at Camp Hancock, it was loosely enforced. Mostly to compensate for the extreme security on base. On the way out of the room, you grabbed out pass card and room key and shoved them into your pocket. Your boots going on last before you left on your way.

Camp Hancock had changed substantially from what it once was, at least according to the junior officer who had shown you around on your first day here. While many of the buildings were still made of wood and pop-up buildings to accommodate the assorted OSS agents and company worth of security guards. Only the command building, officer's quarters and armoury were constructed out of concrete.

As you walked, you counted no less than 5 security patrols. And all of them stopped you to check your papers. The final two patrols including guard dogs, a Hungerian Vizla and a German Shepard making up the canine parts of each patrol. The former being valued due to it's nose and tracking abilities, while the other one for it's ability to take a man down rather quickly.

As you arrived at the armoury and it's attached range, you noticed that Logan was waiting by the doorway, smoking down the remains of a cigarette.

"Berkhard, good to see you." Logan greeted you with a smile as you walked over to him. He let the stub of the cigarette fall from his mouth and onto the ground, where he extinguished it beneath his boot.

"Good to see you too Logan. How is the family?" You asked as you shook his offered hand before the pair of you walked into the concrete building. The armed guard giving you a suspicious glance as you passed.

"They're fine, though I had to talk my younger brother out of joining the navy." Logan replied as you both took up your place in line behind a pair of OSS agents, both of them happily talking with each other in French.

"And why is that? Shouldn't you be encouraging service?" You asked, a bit perplexed as to Logan's reasoning.

"Because he wanted to join a submarine crew. Apparently he doesn't understand just how dangerous it is." Logan spat, you couldn't help but nod. From the reports coming out of the pacific, the IJN was stepping up their ASW capabilities. And with the help of German technology, they were reaping a bloody toll on the American Submarines in the area.

The pair of French operatives took their weapons from the quartermaster and made off for the range. Leaving you and Logan in front of a portly and haggard looking man.

"What's it gonna be for you both 'eh?" He asked as you and Logan walked up to the window.

"I would like a Colt Monitor, with two boxes of ammunition for it. I would also like the contents of deposit box number one-five-one with two boxes of nine by nineteen millimetre." You requested, the quatermaster scribbling down your order on a notepad before looking up at Logan.

"I'll take a Sten mark two, suppressed and a trench gun. Two boxes of ammunition for each." Logan requested, the quartermaster nodding as he noted down the order.

"Right, give me five to get that for you." The quartermaster stated before walking away from the window, the sound of his boots going down a set of stairs as he descended into the depths of the armoury.

"So... what do you think that we're going mobilised for?" You asked Logan as you rubbed the vambraces underneath your shirt. The weird pieces of armour feeling more and more like a part of yourself than a set of magical accessories.

You wouldn't admit it to most, but you felt reassured by their presence. The lukewarm metal reminding you of the power at your fingertips.

"At this point, they could send us on another suicide mission for all I care. I just want some damn action." Logan groaned as he glanced over at the propaganda posters on the wall. The most prominent one showing a stylised depiction of Hitler and a Japanese soldier peeking up from around the globe at North America. The text warning that American homes were in danger from the axis powers.

"Here you go, one Sten gun, a shotgun and some ammo. You're in lane five, earmuffs are on your right at the door." One of the assistants stated as he laid out the weapons for Logan Your friend grabbing the shotgun and slinging it over his shoulder before picking up the sten gun and the ammunition and making his way to the range, leaving you with a brief nod.

You were stuck waiting there for another couple of minutes before the quartermaster returned, the automatic rifle in one hand and a few boxes carried in the other hand.

"Here, one Monitor, ammunition and your deposit box. You're in lane four, earmuffs are on your right at the door." The quatermaster stated as he passed the assorted equipment to you. You slung the monitor over your shoulder before taking the assorted ammunition and the deposit box. You nodded to the quatermaster and then turned to make to the shooting range.

As you opened the door, you found yourself in a small waiting room, the double layers of thick glass allowing you to look into the range without being deafened by the loud report of multiple guns. The French agents at the far end of the range in lanes 11 and 12, firing off at the targets. Logan was closer to the door in lane 5, loading a magazine with the 9mm rounds that the sten gun took. The range marshal standing between the lanes allotted to you and the ones for the French, keeping a close eye to see if any rules were being broken. You grabbed a set of earmuffs, put them on and walked in, quickly making your way to the range and taking your place next to Logan.

"So, do you have any ideas on what the operation is?" You asked Logan after taking off your earmuffs. Your friend seemed to ignore you for a few seconds before finally realising that you were looking at him and taking off his earmuffs.

"I'm sorry, what did you say?" Logan asked, having completely missed the question as you began to load a 20 round magazine for your Monitor.

"I asked if you had any idea what the mission would be." You repeated again as you set the filled magazine off to the side of your stall and moved on to the second magazine out of 3.

"Aside from the usual go in an blow shit up that the OSS usually does, I have no idea. Though if I were to guess it would be something against the japs. They're really starting to put the hurt on the soviets, and their blockade of Australia is slowly choking them out." Logan replied as he put down his final Sten gun magazine and started loading the magazines for his Hi-power. "What about you, what do you think we'll be doing?"

>"I think that we'll be sent back to Europe, as far as we know only the reich has an occult division. And we're the best suited to deal with it."

They aren't prepared to deal with a crazy German wielding a magic sword and a bag of hand grenades. This makes them easier to throw off-kilter. Theoretically, at least. Though they could have some nasty occult stuff up their sleeves too.

"You may have a point with Japan, the sooner we can tip them off balance the better." You replied, just before a bullet slipped out of your hand. You cursed under your breath, before leaning down to pick up the renegade round.

"To be honest though, I'm not really sure. All things considered we may be deployed to hit conventional targets, or to assist resistance cells. The usual OSS operations, but with the need for more destruction." Logan continued on as he loaded his magazines. He shrugged as you stood back up and finished loading your second magazine. You quickly put the magazine down and reached for the final monitor magazine.

"Here, let me load that for you." Logan offered, and wordlessly you passed the final magazine over to him along with the almost empty magazine. And as he began to load it with practised ease, you moved onto your small deposit box. Inside which sat your special piece.

The pistol inside was a standard Luger P08 pistol, usually issued to officers in the heer. You had taken this with you when you defected to the allies, and it had stuck with you since then. Through the Märchenland suicide mission it had sat by your side, and you would keep it with you for as long as you could. And not just for it's sentimental value. It sat inside the box with the suppressor that you had stolen during you last mission. A quick rack of the toggle assembly assuring you that the weapon was still in perfect firing condition. You put the pistol down and grabbed a magazine. With practied ease you loaded the first of the magazines, 8 rounds quickly being loaded into each magazine before moving onto the next one. You pushed through 3 magazines before Zeus piped up.

"Here you go, all loaded." He replied as he offered the loaded magazine back to you.

"Thank you." You replied as you took the magazine and put it down on the table. Your decided what you would train with first.

>Train with the Monitor, it will be your main ranged weapon on an operation. Believe it or not, you don't fancy charging over hundreds of meters with a sword against a number of guys with guns. You remember what happened to the zulu.
>Train with the Luger. As much as you try to avoid it, you will eventually have to use the Zweihänder in combat. And the best backup weapon for a sword is a pistol.

Leaving the Monitor on the bench, you picked up the Luger with practised confidence. The magazine sliding into the receiver with a muted click. The toggle assembly racking back with a comfortable glide as it collected the first round in the magazine. The target was 25 meters away and depicted a profile shot of an upper torso and head with a set of rings spreading out from the centre of the 'chest' of the target.

You moved your earmuffs into position into position and glanced over to Logan, who had put on his earmuffs and was loading his auto 5. You adjusted your stance and sighted in on the target, the weapon rising and falling as you breathed normally. The gun kicked in your hand as you shot at the target, the first round slamming into the upper right of the targer, over the profile's left shoulder. You adjusted your next shots and the follow up shots punched a nice grouping into the middle of the target's chest.

As the toggle assembly locked back open, you hit the magazine release and caught the falling magazine in your waiting hand. You deposited the magazine onto the table and attached the suppressor to the Luger so that you could train with the weight of the suppressor. Another magazine worth of rounds down range and another tight grouping of rounds had appeared on the target. This grouping lower on the target than the first. A quick glance over to Logan's target showing that his grouping was much wider than yours, but the holes blown into the target were much larger.

As you reached down to pick up the final magazine, you felt a hand grab onto your shoulder. A glance over your shoulder revealing that the range master was standing right behind you, and he gestured for you to put the gun down, as soon as you put the gun down he moved onto Logan, getting him to put the shotgun down as you took off your earmuffs. A look down the range showing you that the pair of French operatives had stopped shooting and were chatting with each other.

"RANGE CLEAR!" The range master shouted to a pair of men down the far end of the range, and the men briskly made their way down the range with a set of clean targets. Probably to replace the targets that had just had holes blown through them.

"So, how's the rifle?" Logan asked as you as he flexed his shooting arm.

"I didn't use it, I was just using the Luger." You replied as the first of the targets were pulled down. "As you say, practice makes perfect."

"Good point..." Loan trailed off, before changing the subject. "You know, I don't like how they've re-engineered the auto fives."

"How so?"

"They don't cycle as well as the old ones, the bolt gets stuck sometimes and the choke isn't very good." Zeus explained, before gesturing down to the gun dismissively.

"RANGE HOT!" The range master barked out before you could continue the conversation. You gave Zeus a small nod before putting your earmuffs back on.

Leaving the Luger on the table, you picked up the monitor rifle and loaded one of the 20 round magazines. While the weapons had been re-chambered to fire the German 7.92 x 57mm ammunition following the Märchenland assault so that they could be resupplied in the field. Their biggest weakness was the lack of a suppressor, though what it lacked in subtlety was made up for by it's comfortable mix of accuracy and firepower.

Your first magazine was emptied into the lower section of the target's torso, with some of the rounds going wide as you became accustomed to the weapon's recoil again. The months you has spent as a guinea pig having taking it's toll on your accuracy for a bit. But as the magazine ran dry, you felt your abilities returning to you. After the second magazine ran dry, your grouping had shrunk to a more acceptable size.

As you locked the final magazine into place, your mind began to wander to you other, more arcane abilities. You knew most of what you could do, and it was mostly related to creating multiple magical barriers. And summoning a big fuck off sword.

Said sword being sharp enough to cut through armour like a knife through butter.

Either way, you really hadn't considered other ways to apply your abilities. You could push magic into the sword to make it cut better, and you could push magic into your barriers to make them stronger. Maybe you could do the same with your gun?

You decided to leave it after a few seconds thought. While the idea of bringing out your powers for a bit of play time you didn't want to skirt the line. You already drew enough ire simply by being a German, you didn't want to drive an even bigger wedge between you and the regular agents. And while you were pretty sure that the whispered talk of enemy spies in the OSS was simply a false rumour against the agents from Axis aligned states, you didn't want to tempt fate.

Either way, you sighted in for your final magazine and switched over to automatic. A tap on the trigger resulting in a burst of lead going down range. The group of rounds punching into the target, but spreading out too wide for your liking. You shifted your rifle in your grip and fired again, this time holding the weapon much tighter than necessary for normal fire. The weapon kicked in your grip, but stayed on target. The resulting grouping in the profiled head of the target being around the size of a fist. You sent the rest of the ammunition on it's way a with a few more bursts in less than a minuite, and though the size of the grouping did increase it stayed within the profile of the target's head. You thumbed the weapon's fire selector to safe and looked over at Logan's target, noticing that he was being less than restrained with his the Sten gun.

The torso of his target had been fulled with holes, like a gangster in some cheesy American gangster film at the cinema in the nearby town. A number of shots had missed the profiled body on the target, and it was no surprise that the wall around where the target was hung now sported a few more impact craters.

For his part, Logan just looked annoyed as he thumbed the remaining 9mm ammunition into a magazine. A dour frown on his face as he regarded the spartan weapon on the table in front of him.

"Another bad weapon?" You asked as you placed the Monitor on the table and took off your earmuffs.

"Yeah, not my kind of gun." Logan replied as he put the magazine down and picked up the empty gun. "I mean look at this piece of shit. I get that the Brits need anything that can throw lead, and as a weapon it's good for guys behind enemy lines as it doesn't have much fancy stuff. But it has shit accuracy and the butt of the stock is rounded, it doesn't sit well at all."

"But it's suppressed and automatic, surely those traits are useful?" You asked as Logan offered the gun to you. You took the weapon from him as he answered.

"It fires nine millimetre, it needs to be automatic. No stopping power at all." Logan explained as he passed the final magazine to you. You inserted it into the magazine well and racked back the slide. You took the weapon in a normal hold and pressed the stock up against you shoulder, only to find it jiggling around far too much to your liking. You tightened your grip on the weapon and slowly pulled the trigger.

"You forgot the safety." Logan reminded you as you fumbled around fro the safety, eventually finding it just over the trigger guard on the right hand side. You clicked it off and squeezed the trigger again.

The weapon kicked in your hand and wriggled against your shoulder, the badly designed stock rubbing badly against your shoulder as you let off the short burst. You readjusted your grip and moved your left hand to instead hold onto the magazine well. Instead controlling the weapon's recoil with your hands rather than with the stock. You burst fired again, putting a re-aimed burst into the target's neck area. The weapon kicked again, and due to your unfamiliar grip on the weapon you found it much harder to control the weapon. This grouping being much larger than you wanted by the time you ran out of ammunition.

"You are right, this is a bad weapon." You agreed with Logan as you put the weapon's safety back on and removed the magazine.

"Yeah, I hope that this one's just a problem child." Logan said as you handed the weapon back to him. "So, do you want to keep at it or head off to lunch? The canteen should be opening up right about now."

"Maybe... do you think that we could head into the town nearby for a quick drink?" You probed as you swept the spent brass casings off the range table and onto the floor, before nudging them and their the other brass into the trough just in front of the range table.

"Maybe, the briefing was meant to start at three. We could probably hit the town for a pint or two if we're quick. Maybe some pickup food." Logan assessed as he followed what you were doing. "What's the likelihood that Kyouko is already at a bar?"

"Unfortunately, fairly high..." You acquiesced glumly, you weren't one to question people's life choices, especially after what she had been through. But even then you didn't like it.

"We ought to head to the canteen. If I know our dear friend, she prefers a free meal over alcohol, especially if the choice of drinking could compromise her ability to kill Nazis." You decided as you slung the Monitor over your shoulder with one hand and with care you put the Luger back into the deposit box along with the spare magazines. You'd clean it later.

"I'll take your word for it. I haven't been able to get a solid read on that girl since we met her." Logan digressed as he collected his borrowed equipment. As one, the both of you made for the door. The range master getting the door for the both of you. You thanked him with a quiet nod as you passed and went into the main part of the armoury.

"You both done already?" The quartermaster asked as you arrived at the window and passed him your deposit box.

"We don't have the time right now unfortunately. Though if we can we'll return later today." You replied as you unslung your Monitor and passed it through the window.

"I've got to ask though, is this piece of shit a problem child or is this a regular sten gun?" Logan asked as he passed the offending weapon to the quartermaster, who similarly regarded it with contempt.

"The former, all of the decent Sten guns are either still with the Brits, assigned to field units or are being held back for units that are about to head out." The quartermaster explained as he passed your equipment to one of his assistants. The rest of Logan's equipment going to another assistant.

"Sounds good to me. Though before we go, do you guys have any Tommy guns?" Logan asked as he rubbed his shoulder, the recoil from the uncomfortable Sten gun probably leaving it sore.

"Sorry but they were the first to get snapped up by field teams. If you can find some guys in Augusta that are willing to sell one then sure. Though from what I hear the mob is looking to get their hands on as much ordnance as they can." The quartermaster shook his head dismissively as he gave the news.

"Well that 'aint peachy. Still, if you get one in then could you keep it for me? I can get you some bear for your troubles." Logan offered, you didn't blame him for preferring that weapon. They had a fearsome reputation with a drum magazine.

"Sure, I'll have a root around to see if I can find something similar in the interim for ya." The quartermaster agreed with a nodd. With their business completed, Logan said his goodbye and you both made your way to the mess hall.

The mess hall at Camp Hancock was the complete opposite of the concrete building that you and Kyouko had been assigned into. The mess hall was a complex of large tents connected by a series of tarp awnings. Thankfully, the line for servings was only just building and you only had to wait for a couple of minutes before you could grab a tray and a canteen cup. Serving came soon after.

The food at Camp Hancock was the exact same as on any military base you had ever been on. If there was one thing that the warring nations of the planet seemed to agree upon, it was that a soldier's food should be terrible. The food right now could loosely be described as "soup", even if it looked like something left behind after a tank ran through a crowd.

Meat, tubers, legumes, vegetables, meat stock. The thick mass looked as unpalatable as you expected. Thankfully, the meal was backed up by sliced bread and had the option of a large amount of hot sauce to add some flavor. And just a bit under a quarter of an hour after leaving the armoury, you and Zeus sat down at a bench.

"So, have you heard from your family?" Logan asked as you made to dig into your pile of slop while it was still hot and semi patetable.

"Yes, I have." You replied simply, before taking a heaping spoon full of slop and shovelling it down. The hot sauce covering the after taste.

"How are they?" Logan continued on.

>"They obviously don't believe that It's me."
>"They are alive and free. They are fine."

Perhaps best if I do not communicate with them, they may be treated as collaborators or relatives of a "traitor" if I do.

"They obviously don't believe that it's me." You answered as the benches nearby started to fill up. Logan affixed you with a a confused glance as you simply continued eating.

"Really? Why's that?" Logan asked, apparently forgetting his food for a couple of seconds.

"Because instead of leaving with them for America, I decided to stay in Germany to finish up my university course. My father took this as me supporting the fascist cause." You explained drily, you didn't fancy talking much about it. While you didn't like your father's point of view, you understood now why he took his viewpoint.

"Seems like he has the problem if you ask me." What does your mother have to say about it?" Logan continued to ask, apparently deciding that it was best to continue pushing it in spite of your disinterest in the subject.

"No point in asking her, she's too devout to the party. They split just before my father left for America. She re-married to a member of the party within a month. And if she knew what I was doing right now then she'd probably disown me on the spot." You shrugged, before then forcefully changing the subject. "So, how about your family. How is the rest of your family doing?"

"Oh, they're doing well enough. My father and older brother are working at the building yards, working on some super battleship. Mom is there too but she's working the canteen for the work crews. My cousin's a night fighter pilot and my nephew is an army nurse in North Africa." Logan explained as you took the respite to continue eating.

"And how are they?" You pressed.

"They're doing fine. My dad isn't fit to do any heavy lifting but he can boss people around well enough and has years of experience at his back. So he's a foreman now. Aside from that, everybody's fine. No actual problems." Logan summarised with a smile. But before he could continue, he was cut off by the sound of a tray hitting the table next to you.

"Finally, I've been looking for you two. Where were you?" Kyouko huffed as she sat down next to you.

"We were at the range. How was the bar?" You answered unhelpfully, if the scent of gunpowder that emanated from where a couple of spent shell casings had bounced onto you.

"I didn't get to go to the bar. The briefing's been brought up to one-thirty." Kyouko revealed before tucking into her food. Unlike you and Logan, Kyouko had an iron stomach.

"So, what do you think that the upcoming operation is?" You asked as Kyouko made to shovel more food down.

"If I had to guess? It may be something against the Germans. They're apparently starting to put the pressure on the British now that they have the Soviets on the ropes." Kyouko pondered, giving you time to eat. "They're also building up their naval presence in Norway. At least according to some of the other agents."

"How much are they building up?" Logan asked, as it turned out he was more of a navy buff than you had expected.

"As far as I've overheard, they're up-gunning their current warships and are converting civilian ships into improvised aircraft carriers and are building up what remains of both the Vichy French and Italian navies." Kyouko explained, the news making you even more concerned. The Nazi U-boat fleet was scary enough, if they were able to get the remains of two powerful navies then their surface fleet would be able to rival the Royal Navy.

"What about the Japanese? They're pushing hard on the Soviets and India. Not to mention that they're putting the screws on New Zealand and Australia." Logan asked. "Once the Alaska to Siberia supply route goes, the Soviets will fall in short order."

"The Japanese only have the shipyards in their home islands and have to build everything from scratch. The Germans have all of the Shipyards in mainland Europe and dozens of scuttled and reclaimed ships. The more that we can hamper them the more we can delay them." Kyouko shook her head dismissively, before then turning to look at you.

"Do you have any idea what we're going to be doing?"

>"Now that you mention it, hitting Germany would be fairly likely. Causing death and destruction is our speciality."
>"I still think that hitting the Japanese would be a good idea. We need to keep the Siberia supply line open."

What about China and British Burmese Campaign?
>>
"I still think that hitting the Japanese would be a good idea. We need to keep the Siberia supply line open." You guessed, while cutting off the Kreigsmarine growth, there wasn't much that a single team could do. But if the Japanese could be held back, and if the Soviets could hold the line for a bit longer then hopefully the boffins could make up some plan to put the Nazis back on the defensive.

"Maybe, though I guess that we'll find out for sure when we get to the briefing." Logan shrugged, before starting to chow down on his food. You and Kyouko quickly followed, letting the conversation die. The 3 of you quickly managing to finish off your food before leaving to head for the briefing room. The semi-solid slop going down quickly enough that you didn't really taste much of it.

In spite of taking just over half an hour to finish your food, Kyouko had managed to finish her first serving and get herself a second half serving. The cooks being all to happy to get rid of the slop before getting rid of it. Thankfully however, the food didn't go to waste. If it was good enough to feed to OSS agents, then it was good enough to serve to the few homeless people in the nearby town. Though as your small group left for the briefing room, it didn't take too long for conversation to spark up again.

"So, have you two heard anything from the others?" Kyouko asked as your group left the tent complex that made up the improvised mess hall.

"Last I heard, Gilmore was transferred to North Africa." Logan stated, earning a frown from you.

"I though he had been assigned to Burma?" You stated, your confusion fairly obvious.

"Maybe it was Guzman. Though I haven't heard much from either of them." Logan explained with a shrug.

"What about Klara?" Kyouko asked as the 3 of you passed a dog patrol. The vizla giving your group a glance and a passing sniff before continuing on.

"She's been taken in for protection. I did get a letter from her but I don't know where she is. It was censored." You answered, gaining a nod from Logan.

"She also sent me a letter. Though she didn't include anything that was worthy of censorship." Logan added. "What about you Kyouko?"

"I also received a letter from her. She seemed happy to help the intelligence guys." Kyouko informed the both of you.

"Do you guys think that she'll be safe? I can't imagine that her family would be willing to let her just disappear." Logan asked as the 3 of you approached the command building.

>"I think that she will be fine. If the reich can get agents all the way out here then we're not going to do well."

"I think that she will be fine. If the Reich can get agents all the way out here then we're not going to do well." You replied simply, if you were frank to yourself there was always the chance that the reich could land some people to perform operations. But even then, it would be a massive undertaking for them to find Klara and recover her. You wouldn't put it past the members of the reich to push so many resources into recovering a single person.

"We'll have to hope that the suits can actually do their damn job. I don't know what those Nazis do to people who defect, but it can't be good." Logan statted as your group arrived at the command building.

The large, two floor building wasn't painted, leaving the bare concrete grey and exposed to the elements. The entrance had a pair of armed guards posted at the door with thompson sub machine guns. They checked your identification before letting the three of you into the building. It didn't take too long for you ended up in one of the building's few briefing rooms. At the rate agents were dispatched and returned they never needed more than 2 briefing rooms. The room itself was small and lacked windows. You all threw around theories and gossip for a bit until the allotted time came.

As soon as the clock on the wall struck 1:30, the door into the room opened and a group of men walked in. One in a well tailored suit, another in a khaki uniform adorned with the rank of colonel. They were escorted in by a pair of armed military policemen.

"Officer on deck!" Logan called out as soon as the colonel entered the room, and as one the three of you stood up and saluted.

"At ease folks, nice to see that we won't have to wait to get this briefing started." The general casually saluted back, allowing the 3 of you to sit down. "Unless any of you have any questions?"

You decided to keep quiet and let the colonel get on with the briefing. After a few seconds of silence, the officer gestured to the man in the suit, who produced 3 folders and and handed them out.

"As of right now, you are all one unit. Listed under the code name Schwarzesmarken, black marks, and you will be deployed on high level operations against targets that you see fit. You are all forbidden to talk about your operations, or even the existence of this unit. Do I make myself clear?" The colonel addressed all of you.

"Yes sir!" You all replied as one, the news coming as a shock to nobody.

"Good! On the upside of this however, you won't have to concern yourselves with the typical OSS operations of blowing up railways or supporting resistance units. Instead you will be given three operations to choose from. We will go over your three choices right now." The colonel explained, before then turning to you.

"Do me a favour son, and pick a number between one and three..." The colonel asked you.

"I'll take number two sir." You chose, deciding to go fir the middling option.

"You heard the man, open up your folders and take out the second briefing packet, it's labelled with the code one dash sierra dash one." The colonel ordered before gesturing to one of the MPs, who quickly loaded a roll of film into the room's projector and turned the machine on. He then passed the machine's cycling button to the colonel, who stood off to the side.

"This operation is to investigate and disrupt Imperial Japanese Army units in China, Siam and French Indochina. Our units in the area have reported weird goings on. Entire towns being deserted, rumours of of the Japs performing inhumane experiments on civilians. As such, we will be assigning you to seek and destroy missions against enemy special mission units. We already have a unit in the area that will assist you in searching for these units. But you'll go in as the muscle." The colonel explained as you flipped through the packet. The packet briefly listing off a number of sightings of IJA special mission units and assumed bases of different operations.

"Do we have any idea what they are doing?" Kyouko asked as you looked up to the projected slide, which showed an empty town.

"As of right now, no. Theories range from forced labour to ethnic cleansing and everything in between. Any more questions?" The colonel said before clicking the slide over to show an empty market place. The stalls still packed with food, but with nobody to be seen.

"Will we be working with Chinese nationalist forces or communist forces?" You asked as you came to the divided map of China. The areas controlled by the Japanese shaded in red. The Japanese controlled practically the entire coast, which would only make entry into the country harder.

"That's up to you and your team. Officially, both the Nationalists and the Communists are working together against their shared enemy, but the two are getting more and more hostile towards each other. Chances are that they won't help you without getting something in return. And if you help one group, the other may view it as you throwing your lot in with them." The colonel explained, before sighing. Unlike most countries under invasion from the Axis powers, China had been going through a civil war before the Japanese made landfall. And in spite of everything, the two sides were seemingly content with killing each other instead of killing the Japs.

"What do you recommend sir?" Logan asked as you flipped over to the pages listing the strength available to the Chinese forces. You weren't too sure where they were getting all of their German gear from, but you were sure that there was a reason.

"Son, I'm not an expert on the specifics on what's happening over there, but I do know enough to say this. Steer clear of both groups. If you have to get help from them then take what you need and leave without paying. We don't need your squad getting bogged down helping some stupid farmers who can't put the future of their country ahead of their own politics." The colonel advised, before quickly adding. "Though if you do take this mission then you'll be briefed in the field by one of our teams. They've been there for a good few months now and will be able to give you better advice."

"Do we know if they have an occult division?" You asked as you looked up from the page that summarised the Japanese forces in the country.

"We don't know. And that's part of the reason why you're unit is going in and not a number of other teams. The Japanese could be doing anything to the massive numbers of civilians that they have been kidnapping. They could be putting them to work in their shipyards, they could be testing some new kind of weapon on them, they could be using them as human sacrifices to summon some daemon. We have no real idea if the Germans have shared this kind of information with them." The man in the suit piped up, his steely eyes looking down not into your eyes, but at your vambrace clad arms, which were resting on the table.

"Speaking of German support for the Japanese, of you could all take out the briefing packet in your folder listed under the code six dash echo dash four." The colonel stated before any of you could ask the suit a question. You pulled the briefing packet out from the folder and began to thumb through it while the colonel began to speak.

"This operation is to disrupt the flow of German technology to Imperial Japan." The colonel brought up a new slide, which showed a section of the map of the world. It showed everything from Europe and Africa to Asia and Siberia.

"As we know from ONI, the Germans are providing technical information to the Japanese. We believe that the Germans are doing this by sending U-boats from Germany to mainland Japan. However, due to the British still controlling the Suez canal. We believe that the Germans are sending U-boats around South Africa on their route to Japan. But even with the help of resupply submarines, there is no way that the German U-boats can make it that far. Especially when carrying large amounts of cargo." The slide switched again, this time showing a rough route that German U-boats would have to take, a number of strikes along the route showing where the submarines would have to be refuelled. "As you can see, there is a gap in the Indian ocean where the U-boat would run out of fuel and would be dead in the water, even with support from supply submarines. As such, ONI believes that there is a hidden German U-boat base somewhere on the East coast of Africa."

"Your mission will be simple, in theory. You will have to find the base and either report back to us or otherwise destroy it yourselves. However, due to the lack of intelligence we have on the enemy operation, you will have to decide where you start your investigation. Do you have any questions?" The colonel asked, leaving things open to you and your unit.

You decided to stay quiet. You didn't really think that this mission was suited well to your team's talents. Especially when another unit with a radio could do the exact same mission all the way down to destroying the submarine base. Or at least call in a flight of bombers to level the damn base.

"Nothing? Good, I'll leave the explanation of the final mission to Agent Redbrooke." The colonel stated, before stepping back to let the man in the suit take the floor.

"Good afternoon, Black Marks squad. If you can all please take out the final briefing packet then we can get on with the briefing." The suit greeted all of you, his tone of voice setting you on edge. You quickly pulled out the briefing packet and opened it, finding it to be smaller than both of the previous packets by a significant margin.

"This operation is to hamper SS Occult Unit operations in Europe. As far as we know from the dozen plus units we have deployed in Europe right now, SS units in Italy have been moving in erratic patters. Dig sites have started to appear and have been abandoned just as quickly. We've correlated the information onto a map you'll see on the second page." The agent began, prompting you to the next sheet of paper in the small binder. You thumbed to it, and gazed down at the map. Said map depicting the unmistakable boot of Italy. Dotted around the map were a number of red and yellow dots. Most of them centred around the north of the country.

"Each dot on the map represents a current or former dig site. As you can see, the dig sites are spreading out from the north of the country. Additionally, museums and historical sites around the country are being systematically locked down by the SS." The agent continued, not bothering to wait for all of you to analyse the map.

"Your mission is to go to these dig sites and find out what the Nazis are doing. For this mission you'll be aided by local resistance units and a pair of OSS units that we have deployed to the area. If needed, you may be called in to provide support for the other OSS units if you can spare the time." The agent finished, leaving an awkward silence for a few seconds as everybody waited for the agent to say something else.

"So, what you you two think?" You asked your two comrades, both of them looking up from their briefing packets.

"Personally, I think that we should do the China mission. Something about it screams foul to me. Though I'm not sure if Kyouko would be welcome around those parts." Logan stated his choice, Kyouko simply shook her head.

"I think that we should perform the Italy mission. While I wouldn't be welcome by our Chinese support in Logan's mission, there are ways to get around those issues. My real problem with that mission is that we would have a lot of ground to cover to attack relatively few facilities, not to mention that infiltration and recovery will be much harder than with the other missions." Kyouko gave her opinion, the red-headed woman looking back down at her briefing packet as she spoke. "We would be out there for months in order to hit every target."

"Why the Italy mission though? If anything we'd have to hit more targets." Logan asked as he stood up and walked over to Kyouko.

"Two reasons. Firstly, all of the targets are closer together. If we wanted to attack all of the active dig sites in one sweep we could do it all in just over a day if we were fast. A week at worst. Secondly, if we're lucky we could sack one dig site and find out what the Nazis are looking for. From there we could easily counter them." Kyouko explained calmly as Logan leant over her shoulder.

"That may be true, but in China entire towns are going missing. Thousands of civilians just gone and nobody knows where they've gone. That many people don't just go missing as a matter of course. Something big is definitely going on out there." Logan countered, and as the pair of them began to argue over which mission was more important, you found yourself with the deciding vote.

>Choose the China mission. Logan is right, that many people don't just go missing.
>Choose the Italy mission, it's the only one with confirmed occult activity. And you're best suited to deal with it.

After a few seconds of back and fourth between your two comrades, you made your choice.

"We're going to China." You stated and a flat, matter-of-fact tone. "Logan's right, that many people don't just go missing."

"And we're just going to ignore the Occult division activity just to go searching for some civilians? Other teams can handle it." Kyouko replied , earning herself a short glare from Logan.

"The Occult Division are only looking for now. They aren't actively hurting people. But this?" You gestured to the briefing packet in Kyouko's hand. "This has the potential to be so much worse."

Kyouko was silent for a few seconds, before simply sighing as leaning back into her chair. You'd have to talk to her about this.

"Well it looks like it's settled then." The colonel spoke up as he stepped forwards.

"There is still the matter of how our team will get to China in the first place." The agent spoke up, his voice remaining level and calm.

"We've got that handled, don't you worry." The colonel said over his shoulder, before smiling at each of you in turn. "In the mean time, the rest of you, saddle up and head to the armoury. Pick out your gear for the operation. The truck out of here leaves in around half an hour. So get moving."

The three of you saluted and left silently, the sound of your boots echoing through the surprisingly quiet building.
