/qst/ - Quests

The early morning mist had begun to fade as you take another look over the cliff side into the valley… or was it a ravine? Well whatever it was its was, it was left behind by a massive creature that can no longer make such things and has became apart of the landscape. The steep stone walls surrounded the indented patch of land on all sides making a narrow canyon, that you could guess was made by the same beast that made this valley, the only way in or out of the valley. It made for a perfect cage to snare your marks.
Once you're satisfied that nothing seemed out of the ordinary, you pull back to the nearby tree line not wanting to give away your presence to anything that may see you as a snack and regroup with your three other companions. The first was a tall man in plated leather armor named Mezetl. He was quietly kneeling over a massive slab of bone sharpened to a deadly edge and reinforced with bands of metal, and was sharpening it for the coming conflict. The second was is dark clothing that hung loose and thin around his joints and padded around his chest, arms, and legs and had an embroidered motif of some kind bat creature in deep red strings on his back. His name was Shoda, and he was listening with half lidded eyes to your third companion, Akihito, who was talking a little too loudly and was currently shirtless.
“Look all I’m saying is, you kill more, you get more. That not unfair right?” He spoke as he balanced a long, thin, shabby looking sheathed blade on his lap. “If you guys really think you're ready for Initiation then this should be a fair opportunity to make a little extra, right?” he cocked his head back tauntingly, hands palm up as if asking for someone to challenge him. Shoda let out a tired sigh.
“It's not that it isn’t fair, it just o-”
“Don't tell me you scared you’ll lose or something?” Akihito interrupts “Come oon, you can be lazy, but i never figured you for a coward.” Shoda lets out a growl at this.
“No its that stupid rule about the alpha!” He seems to notice you walk back into the camp and realizes he was raising his voice.

Shoda takes a moment to collect himself before continuing, only to be stopped by the sound of a loud boom in the distance. Mazatl jolts up and swiftly places the massive sword on his back. “That must be it.” he says with his deep voice before jogging off past the tree line to check on the noise. You hear Akihito curse as he scrambles around for a white coat with red stains that never fully washed out and lined with fur and hastily starts trying to get it on, only to get his arm stuck in the sleeve and fall over comically. Shoda laughs as he grabs two blades, each the length of your forearm, and a belt with a number of pockets, bombs, and holsters and slowly fasten it to his hip. Mazatl comes back to confirm what you all knew. “That was the signal. Akihito we must hurry!” he excitedly rushes the struggling man as he finally get the last arm through the sleeves.
“Im hurrying, I'm hurrying.” Akihito swears between breaths as he fumbles to grip his sword before chasing after Mazatl who had shot off through the forest despite his heavy equipment. Shoda moves in the opposite direction of them both and looks to you.
“I’m going ahead. Don’t take to long, but make sure you don’t forget anything, alright.” with that he take off running leaving you alone at the camp to collect the last of your supplies.

You heft the massive blade of bone up right, letting the handle stand over your head, and examine the massive girth of the blade. It was still sharp enough to cut and no cracks meant that it was still sturdy enough to withstand the viscous attacks you were expecting soon. Satisfied with your weapon you move on to your supplies making sure your medical supplies were ready in case of trouble and that your deployable shock trap was in your front pouch for quick deployment.

You run back to the cliffside and towards the mouth of the canyon that would act as the gate for your trap where you find Shoda laying belly down cautiously peering over the edge with some binoculars. You shuffle along the ground up to him careful not to stand out to much in case something was flying overhead.

“Surprised the old man still has it in him.” Shoda whispers before looking to you to see your frown. “Right, relative of yours… sorry Robby.” He started calling you that lately, and you're not to sure how you feel about that, but that's for another time.
“He’s also our mentor, you should show respect anyway.” You say as look across the cliff to see Akihito and Mazatl come to a sliding finish at the other cliff side. Least they’re excited for this… you were just nervous.

“Alright , one last time to be sure we got this down…” you start and hear Shoda groan “Gran- I mean Mr. Leeson is scarring the marks right into the valley with the bombs.”
“Caravira, nasty fuckers.” Shoda adds “claws and fangs long as your arm on 6 ft tall blood red raptors that can move like a cat on hyper drinks and enjoy chunking their prey piece by piece and laughing about it...” you both pause for a moment as you silently doubt that last part. He just shrugs and goes back to scanning for the pack.
“Right, anyway” you continue, “ once the pack gets here we toss smoke bombs and jump in behind them and clean up as much of the fodder as we can,”
“Don't know if you want to call something that can tear out your guts with its bare hands fodder…”
“Because! Our mark is the alpha of the pack. Without him the whole group disperses without much trouble and the roads are safe again.”

You were hoping rehashing the plan would make you loosen up a bit more but all you can think of is the pack of beast possibly tearing into you if you slip up. Your thoughts are pushed to the side as you hear screeching and rapid thumping as something makes it way towards you.

There was a final explosion as you see a hoard of red creatures, all yelping and screeching something horrifying, as they charge into the valley. You can hear Shoda counting each one he sees he stops suddenly at the sight of one caravira that stood above the rest. It was significantly bulkier, with skin that was a deep red and was twisted with more muscle than the rest. While the smaller ones had beak-like-mouths that were lined with unfathomable number of teeth including a massive pair of fangs that would extend beyond the beak, the larger ones beak was like a double sided axe. Its fangs looked more the length of your leg than your arm.

“And he makes number 10’ Shoda comments as his head tracks the screeching hoard into the valley. As they reach the wall of the valley you can hear them begin to panic. You look up to see Mezetl with a smoke bomb ready and turn to see Shoda getting to his feet with bombs in hand. It was time

You keep your eyes focused on one of the caraviras, making sure not to lose track of it. It was gonna be the first one by fortune of being the nearest to you. With a thud and two soft booms the valley fills with smoke a panicked cries of monsters and the yell of one zealous hunter. Akihito was the first to jump down with a yell that could over power the screech hoard beneath him. The beast start to scramble looking for a way out but Mezetl and you move in sync as you plummet down with blades unsheathed and mid swing. WIth a loud crash and a shock you feel through your whole body you hit the ground, and see before you the split remains of two unfortunate caraviras that made the mistake of trying to be the first ones out. The caraviras next in line jump back startled but one makes a bold move to spring back at you fangs and claws at the ready. Your hands struggled to heft the sword with the speed necessary to put it between you and the beast but when you feel no force you peek from behind your blade to see Shoda on top of the caravira, his blade sunk deep into its neck. With a gurgled whine it loses its breath. 3 dead, 7 to go.

“That damn idiot, he jumped right for the alpha didn’t he!” Shoda cries as Mezetl closes rank next to you to ensure there was no room for any that attempted to run. The smoke was still thick and all you could see was a flurry of shadows that moved in a screeching frenzy along with the yells of Akihito. You really wish you could say those were triumphant yells but in all the chaos it sounds like he could also be in trouble.

You weren't about to leave a teammate to hang like meat on a hook and so, with resolve, you push yourself into the smoke cloud. “We gotta help him!” you shout over the cacophony going on. You hear Shoda curse before the sound of your allies footsteps follow you in. The caraviras were going absolutely wild, lashing out blindly at every shadow that fell into their line of sight. You strained to try to figure out where Akihito was fighting while trying to navigate the lashing of tails and claws that were being swung wildly.

Your eyes widen as the smoke seems to billow and a caravira burst forth from your left, mouth wide and claws outstretched. A blur of motion happens and you see Mezetl standing there his blade acting as a wall between him and the caravira he just body slammed out of the way. You see him shout something but can't hear it over the head splitting screeches that seems to suddenly ramp up in a worrying intensity. You turn to see where he was looking and see the massive shadow that stood before you before it vanished and was replaced with a small more human looking silhouette that you recognized.

You shout to it as you approach only to stop short as your ally wildly takes a slash at you. “Shit , sorry!” he shouts realizing his mistake. “Thought you were one of the smaller ones, they keep interrupting me. “I have this thing on the run, if i can just get a solid hit in I can finish this, I know it!” You can't help but look at him like he’s crazy. Good thing you showed up, no way in hell he’s doing this on his own. You turn to look for the alpha and notice the smoke was starting to clear a bit as you could start to see it more clearly. It was currently facing away from you, seeming to be shouting at some of the other caravira and couldn't help but notice it had to turn it’s head sideways to open his mouth to avoid stabbing itself with its massive fangs.

The caravira run off into the thicker parts of the smoke and the alpha turns to see you both. Akihito readies his blade and looks ready to charge in.

>Attack together, the alpha cant dodge you both!
>You have a shock trap, time to set it up while the smoke is still here and the alpha is busy.

You look over to Akihito and you both nod in agreement. It can't avoid you both at the same time. You make the first move, rushing forward and to its side, shouting to get its attention, and make a mighty horizontal swing with your greatsword. The alpha was quick to jump out of the way, and right into Akihito, who had made a mad dash as you kept the alpha’s attention, in its blindspot. You see his blade like a streak of light and hear the scream of the caravisa alpha as it makes a breakneck spin to face its’ attacker. With its’ attention off you you leap in and swing your greatsword square onto its back. The beauty of such a large weapons is that it can still get such a clean hit even on such a large target. That and the ability to cleave things two with ease.

You feel you blade slam into the ground and look to see how cleanly the beast was split, only to see it was standing a ways from you still on its feet and whole. A large river of red ran down its back and it was hollering something fierce. Akihito didn't waste a moment as he charged forward ready to take another swing, unaware of the two other caravisa that were running into the fray to help their leader.

Your feet seemed to move on their own as took a step forward just close enough to bring the tip of your sword down on one of the intruding caravisas with a over head swing and shocking the second one enough to have it stop its charge. Akihito had continued his offensive and managed to deliver two swings to the alpha leaving two thin lines of red just below its neck as it attempts to reel back. With a quick motion it leaps forward with slashing claws forcing Akihito to dive for the ground to avoid being torn to shreds.

It lands in front of you but already begins to spin to deliver another leap at Akihito, seemingly in a frenzy and ignoring you standing there as you rebalance yourself from your last attack. Seeing the opportunity, you swing your whole body to deliver a devastating blow to the side of the beast and sending it flying. It lands with a wet smack and struggles to get to its feet for a moment, where you and Akihito would have continued your assault, when you see three other caravista come and blockade you from it.

>>
The smoke has almost completely cleared out when you notice Shoda and Mezetl come up from your side and join your ranks. The alpha’s small eyes were bloodshot red and wildly searching for something when they stop on the exit from the valley before looking back to your group. In all the chaos you had pushed to the center and turned around so you were no longer blocking the exit. Akihito and Shoda were the fastest by far and might be able to block the exit but they might not be enough to stop it, and the caravisa would try to block any charge straight at it that you try to make, but you might be able to overwhelm them if you all do it, though that would leave the exit wide open. You could also just mark it and track it down wherever it tries to rest at.

> Attempt to block the exit. No escapes!
> Full charge, kill it before it can run!
>Just mark it and take a moment to gather yourself, you'll find it when it tries to lick its wounds.

Both groups stare at each other waiting for the other to make a move. You hear your companions ready their weapons and get poised to make an attack. The caravisa positions themselve low to the ground ready to spring out at you at a moment's notice while their leader tests putting weight on its injured leg to be sure it can run. With a weak scream the alpha turns sharply and starts its dash for the exit

“Don’t let it run!” you shout as you lead the charge knocking the first the caravisa out of the way with heavy hit to the side. Mezetl follows up quickly managing to catching a second one with a horizontal swipe upwards. You can see the third out the side of your eye as Shoda digs his blades across it’s legs in swift motion and not stopping his charge to chase after the alpha with Akihito, who was screaming bloody murder as the tip of his blade dragged along the ground.

The alpha, realising his bodyguards all failed, decides on different coarse of action. With stomp, in plans a foot in front and stops it’s dash and reels its head back and low to the ground before swinging up at its’ pursuers intending to cut them open with the edges of it fangs. Shoda makes a yelp as he barely catches the attack with his blades but being launched up into the air. Akihito slides in under him and manages to push himself back to his feet as he takes a viscous swing at the now exposed neck of his mark. The blade cuts deep to the bone as Akihito give a triumphant yell and the alpha squelches out a cry as it stumbles back before falling over.

>still writing...
>>
You let out a sigh as you place your massive weapon on your back and resist the urge to just fall over. Shoda was laying on the ground still recovering from the hit he took but manages to give a tired thumbs up to confirm he wasn’t dead. Mezetl comes over to pat you on the back ,though it was more like he was trying to push you over with how much force he put into it, before he walks over to help Shoda up off the ground. Akihito was currently doing something you could barely call dancing while he shouted about his victory.

“YEESS! Its all mine!. Ahahaha!” Akihito shouts as he continues his strange undulations.
“What is he talking about?” you aks as you join Shoda and Mezetl. Shoda just groans as covers his face with his hand.
“It's what we were talking about before you came back from scouting. He wanted to make a wager so that instead of evenly splitting the rewards you keep what you kill. For whatever reason he really wants that Alpha caravira.”
“Huh,” You can't help but voice a massive flaw or two “Doesn't he know we have to deliver the remains to the guild and that we only get whatever they don’t need. I mean that was the mission.” You notice Akihito stop in place as he approaches you after his jig. “Also, I helped kill it so wouldn’t that mean i should get half of it?” He was starting to realize his errors now. “Given all that though it would seem he wouldn't get much of anything since he didn't kill an of the other caravisas. Probably just get some some bits of its hide at best.” At this point Akihito has his hands at his head with his teeth clenched tight . Shoda just laughs and goes with Mezetl to help carve out anything worthwhile from their kills before the scavengers catch wind of the buffet here.

The four of you get to work grabbing what value could be found on your slain prey. You had to work fast, you could already see a small gathering of sickle bats waiting for a meal, if you take too long and there will enough of them gathered to be brave enough to rush you. You looked for high value parts, uncracked healthy fangs, large patches of undamaged skin, bones that weren't broken and big enough to be used.

It wasn’t to long after you've started that the sound of a cart could be heard coming towards you. The sight of a large grey and brown ,four legged beast encased in a hard, jagged, domed shell could be seen waddling slowly down the path. It was a Shelkiloth, the common beast of burden you've seen, though you've also seen them in the wild. It was currently pulling a large flat cart that had all your other hunting supplies. The driver was a large man with greying hair and a full beard and dressed in what look like armor made of purple scales and banded with blue metals. It was your grandfather and mentor Emmett Leeson, though when you were being trained by him it was Mr.Leeson. He always demanded respect to authority, even when he was on the receiving end.

“Oh, glad to see you boys aren't dead.” He says with feigned surprise, “Guess that means I don't have to consul any grieving mothers tonight.” He parks the cart alongside the corpse of the alpha and get off the cart to feed the Shalkiloth a head of lettuce. Your eyes dart to his leg where a brace was clamped to it and clearly not doing as well as it should. He put too much strain on it and broke it again. “Well you boys better hurry, the pests are getting hungry and we still need to load this big guy up and get back to town before night fall.” he taps the side of the large beast’s head with his foot admiring its features. “Roberto, Aki! Get over here and get to work.” he says as he start making room on the cart.

By the time the sun was at it highest you had secured your prizes and were making you way back to home. It was a slow process but you were almost there, you could already see the light of the crystal spire just above the treeline. Your grandfather focused on humming an old tune while he drove the cart. The rest of you were in the back with the dead caravista, which was bound and wrapped in cloth. Shoda was tending to his now bruising wound, a number of empty tonic containers at his side. The tonics worked great for a quick boost and sealing wounds but bruising like that always took a few days. Mezetl was currently shirtless and was attentively doing maintenance on his armor that you now see had endured a number of claws and fangs. He didn't seem to actually be doing much good beyond just stichting it back together though. Akihito was looking over the spoils, cleaning them and organizing them. You couldn't tell if he was just bored of he was drained.

You get some sleep, this morning was quite the draining experience and a power nap sounded like just the thing you needed. You were awaken with a shake as you informing you were back home, the holy city of Sousato. You were first greeted by gate built out of the massive logs and reinforced with metal bands. Along the top of the wall you see patrols traversing the tops as they keep and eye out for any potential dangers that may attempt to attack the city. The gates take some time to open, but once swung wide your gifted the sight of the city. The first building was a Hunter Guild outpost, there to greet and deal with returning or departing hunters. A number of guild members rush out to greet you; your grandfather produces some papers to hand off to one of them while the others work on getting the massive beast off your cart to be examined and carved.

You get off the cart to stretch and enjoy the view once more. You focus now on the farms just further down the road. They’re small, not nearly big enough to support the population of Sousato but enough that should trouble come sieging the gates everyone won't starve immediately. The farms were well kept and manned with plenty of workers to tend to everything from the crops to the shelkiloth and the boswine. Further along the road is a the start of the hill that makes up the rest of the city. The base is a shopping district of sorts filled with workshops, shops, restruants, and the famous guildhall of the Hunters Guild, though some of the people not as well off live there as well. Further is the bulk of the homes that get older as you go up the hill until you get to the largest and oldest of all the buildings. The shrine of the Star Crystal, a massive glowing blue shard that was said to have fallen from the heavens and keeps the city safe from the most dangerous monsters of the world. The shining tower of crystal’s light can still be seen clearly even in the mid day light. Around it was built a massive temple that today lends itself as both town hall and academy as much as it does a place of faith anymore. Not to say people ever stopped believing in it, so much as they did start thinking more practically about it all.

“Alright here you are, we won't be needing this for a our study. They were too dense for any of our instruments to work with.” one of the guild member says as he walks out with a basket with large freshly cleaned fangs poking out of it. Akihito couldn't wait for the man to set them down before he reached out to grab one and started marveling at it in his hands. Once hes done, he reaches back into the cart to grab his things taking only a few moment to toss each of you a sack.
“Alright, there we go. An even split. Now i need to hurry before everything starts to close.” he says as turns to run down the road. Everyone takes a moment to check their bag to be sure they got what they were supposed to before agreeing to meet up later at the guildhall for drinks.

“Hey, Jorta! I got something good for you!” you shout as walk into the workshop expecting to see your friend, instead you find his red headed sister leaning up against the wall looking impatient. She sees you and crack a her usual smile.
“Well hello there hotshot.” she says eyeing the massive fang you were carrying with you. “What was unlucky enough to cross your path?” she extends her hand to look at it in more detail.
“Caravisas pack and all. Just got back actually.”
“Awesome. How was it? It was your first real hunt right?” she asks taking her eyes off the your bone to meet yours finally.
“Hey, Joany. It’s ready.” you hear a deep voice as a massive man looking to be a few years older than you walks out from a back room with a sickle and chain in hand. It was Jorta, a family friend of yours. His father was close friends with your grandfather and was the one the made most of his gear. You only recently met Joanna a year ago when you started training as a hunter since she started around the same time you did. “Hey there Roberto, glad to see you made it back in one piece. And with a prize i see.” he says seeing the fang in his sister's hand. She hands the fang back to you and runs up to her brother eager to grab the weapon. It was a simply looking weapons though the blade seemed to have blue hue to it and the weight on the other end of the chain was forged in a more claw like shape. Joanna coos over the weapon for a bit before leaving, though not before you told her about you meet up at the guildhall.
“Sure i’ll see you there. I'll bring Mia as well.” you wave goodbye before turning back to business

You hand over the fang and let him inspect it for a bit before he tells you what he can do.

Considering we chose the greatsword I would say we are...quite large with a good sense of timing. The greatsword shows no mercy those who cannot time its slow swings properly but it hits very hard. Probably have some collection of scars we got from failing at the timing part and being too slow at the draw or sheathing it.

What items Roberto specializes at, whether bombs, traps, potions, tranqs, etc.

What level of biology Roberto studies. Whether he only knows enough anatomy to know where to strike, or if he cares at all about particular reactions to chemicals or behavioral patterns.

How Roberto feels about Dragon element. All the lore surrounding it makes it seem like bad shit, so there's a possibility that he's just not capable of handling it without going insane.

Vague description of wealth. Something like whether he owns his own toilet or shits in a bucket, and how often he gets to eat like a king.

Reputation at the guild. Not as a hunter, but as someone who uses guild facilities. Is he polite to staff? Does he clean up after himself when going to the hotspring? How loud is he when drinking?

An awards page. You know what I'm talking about.

[Oh yes there will be a inventory to keep track of your trophies/awards, extra gear, rare items, and other fun bits and bobs. That being said, I don't want to get bogged down trying to emulate every aspect of the game. The 12 page inventory management of parts, tickets, herbs, potions ,traps etc. etc. is one of a few things I plan on just trimming a bit to be more manageable and enjoyable as a quest/tabletop that I plan to run for many people.

I'll keep those physically features in mind going forward if no one has any objections. Also, don't feel like you're locked to the greatsword, hunters are trained in the basics of all hunting weaponry, though if you do want to specialize I do plan on introducing a system for that. Speaking of...]

[As of right now Roberto isn't even a fully fledged hunter yet. I'll get into in more detail in quest, but his initiations rite into the hunters guild is soon but as of yet he has yet to pick a proper specializations.

His understanding of biology is limited as all the monsters have wildly different body types and anatomy from each other on top of his relative newness to hunting, but the means of learning about each one will be at his disposable should he elect to spend time there. Or he can just be sure he has the sharpest stick and the hardest armor to deal with anything and learn the rest in the school of hard tailwhips and fireballs.

Dragon element isn't a known thing just yet. In fact to further file the numbers off, as I have so far, there is nothing in that quest by that name, please no sue capcpom. But yes, there is a corrupting super powerful element that will be shown, though no one has been able to utilize it just yet. Maybe young Roberto shall be first. Roberto has also been trained in basic mixing and combination recipes that I'm sure any MH fan as memorized, though for how well he is at it is ...well lets just say he has no books right now.

As for his current standing, His Grandfather is a old hunter which is relatively unheard of. The profession doesn't really have a retirement plan as one is generally not needed. Hunters are rewarded handsomely, though some would argue its still not enough, because of how necessary they are for everyone's survival and how dangerous the job is, which causes a degree of reverence for hunters that keeps newblood flooding in despite the dangers.

Got off track there, but the point is that his granddad is a big deal with some clout and you'll learn more about his parents in a bit in quest but safe to say they only add more expectations to his large plate. But this also means he's pretty well off. It's my narrative reason for why I wont be trying to keep meticulous track of funds beyond monster parts and rare items. Though I also plan on putting a few harder limits on what you can take into a the field for a hunt to compensate for this. So go ahead and buy those stacks of potions and traps it wont help you in the hunt to much but you wont have to worry about having to do honey farming at least.

As for his personality and stuff, his grandfather is a stickler for respect of authority and position and has been sure to hammer that home with his grandkid and his parents didn't raise a savage! That being said I'll leave it to you guys if you want to have him hold himself to those ideals or if he only maintains them disdainfully and wants to buck them. Or just land somewhere in the middle. Everything else I'll let you guys decide how to play it out as we come to it.]

“I’ll have it ready for you in the morning.” He says as you hand over your weapon and the materials.

>2 monster parts remain

You turn to leave as he sets aside your stuff when you hear him call out to you. “So have you given any thought to what you're going to be doing after initiation?” You stop at the door and turn to face Jorta, slightly confused by his question. He seems to notice that. “Once you’re an official guild hunter you’ll be free to choose your own hunts, so just a question of what kind do you want to do.” You take a moment to consider his words.

There was always reports of strong monsters roaming around if you just wanted to hunt the strongest but there were also jobs about just keeping trade route clear and protecting villages. You could even be assign to a village if you wanted, there’ve been a lot of new ones colonized recently that could use the help of a hunter. Theres also been rumors of a potential new survey team to explore and map out further into the wilds.

“You still have time so don't fret to much over it.” Jorta finishes bundling your things together and moves them into the back room before coming back shortly. “I know Joany will be chasing the next big hunt so she’ll probably stick around in Sousato until then. Ask a few of your friends, they might have some good plans.”

“Thanks, I think I’ll do that. I’ll see you tomorrow.” You say as you leave, still lost in thought. Your body was starting to feel heavy as the days hunt and travel starts to weigh on you and muddying your thoughts. You’ll consider it more later but for now you had other things you wanted to do before your arranged time to meet with your teammates a the guildhall.

The bathhouse was major draw of Sousato, believed by many to be blessed by the Star Crystal that reaches an underground spring that the bath house pulls its water from. As such, entry was difficult for the general public as people would cram into it at all times of the day. As a guild hunter(soon to be) though you had special treatment. As you entered the bath house you were greeted by a filled waiting room and the bath attendant at the counter beamed a smile at you as she saw you.

“Ah, Mr. Leeson a pleasure to see you.” She give a slight bow as you approach “As I understand it you just returned from your first hunt correct?”
“How did you know?” you couldn't help but voice your surprise.
“Your friend was just here a moment ago had mentioned it. Seemed he had suffered a nasty bruise.” Shoda was the one. Makes sense, he’d have to do some serious explaining to get into the hunter bathhouse. You were all hunters in training but not official licensed hunters, it make using the facility a bit difficult without a proper hunter to vouch for you. Luckily your grandfather was someone who people took note of so as his mentees you and your allies have gained some recognition, you especially.

She led you to the changing and wash room where you cleaned off the day's sweat and dirt in a crowded room of other who were doing the same. Aside from polite greetings no one bothered you. After cleaning yourself you put on a bathrobe and was led to the hunter’s bath, a separate smaller bath from the public one.

The roof had an opening to the evening sky and the smell of calming aromas filled the air. The water was hot, but not scalding, and it tingled as you got in causing your muscles to immediately relax into jelly. You adjusted yourself into the water when you noticed another figure across the bath from you who seemed he might have fallen asleep. Your sure the attendants wouldn't let someone stay too long in the bath, right?

As the knots in your body unfold under the water so to do the ones that muddied your mind. Initiation will be in one week, and who knows what they will throw at you for that. It’s not a lot of time, just enough to get one or two hunts in if you can convince your grandfather to let you. You could also spend that time at the shrine library studying up on potential marks they might have you hunt for initiation, you could probably do some prayers for good luck while you’re there. You’ll talk it over with the rest of your team.

Speaking of them Jorta’s words come back to mind. What was everyone going to do after they were intiated? Akihito was probably going to chase bounties and dangerous monsters for fame and money, he was always looking for a way to get a little extra. Mezetl was always quiet, but he seemed to enjoy the hunt. He might be chase after the biggest hunts he can the thrill of it.Shoda was another mystery, though you can't help but think he’d enjoy the quiet village life. The rumors of another survey team mapping out the wild might also be in his ball park, he was always resourceful and observant and his family would relish the fame of having a son who was on the forefront of new discoveries. But what did you want?

Your thoughts are pierced by the sound of feet stepping into the bath area with heavy steps. Your turn your attention to a woman who had entered into the bath area, she was still clothed with her armor of a strange bones, that looked an awful lot like rocks, of a creature you’ve never seen before and plated blue metal. On her back a large silver shield along with a pointed spear that had retracted into itself for portability. She stomped through the doorway ignoring your presence and marched to the sleeping man on the other side of the bath with an attendent worriedly chasing after her, not sure if they should stop or help her. She reaches down and grab the sleeping person by the arm and yanks them out of the pool. The man yelps as he stumbles to his feet desperate to not slip and fall as he shouts about needing to get his cloths.

“We were supposed to be out of here 20 minutes ago, hurry up!” She begins pushing the man out the door stopping every few moments to apologize to the attendant for his actions when she seems to notice your presence and apologize to you for the disturbance. In that moment you got a clear look at her and came to recognize her. She was Hekat Muran of the Purple Archarans, a team of hunters named after the deadly giant spider beast that lurks in the forest at nights. They were the current city favorites for their actions in saving Sousato five years ago. SInce then they’ve been the go to hunters for any large problems normal hunters couldn’t even begin to handle. Last you had heard of them they had returned from dealing with an infestation of some invasive new species that left them short a member. They had been on the search for a new hunter for the past few weeks. Seems it’s still not going well. Maybe you should try out for the spot, you know if you ever wanted to be laughed at for some reason.

You try to return to your thoughts but the idea just keeps with you, if you did join with them you’d be the hunters that would get to go out and deal with the biggest and the baddest of hunts wherever they threaten people. And any survey team would want to have the strongest and most capable hunters to deal with whatever come at them and they don't get stronger or more capable than Archarans, least not that you know of. Besides how cool would it be to be able to work with legends like them. Or maybe you could just make your own team and take the title from them… maybe one day.

Your hands were starting to wrinkle meaning it was time to get out. As you dried off and got your things you could practically hear your body sing with joy at how easy it was to move, was like you were weightless.

>Your body will be lighter on your next hunt

The sun was starting to sink below the horizon by the time you leave, meaning it was just about time to meet at the guildhall. As you walk the streets you find it peacefully empty as people return home and shops finish closing for the night. The smell of everyone cooking their dinner fills the air and you find yourself jogging to the guildhall. The building was one of the largest in town, the shrine was still larger, and was decorated with emblems of the hunt: the bat, the spider, the bird, the monkey, and the dragon. They represented aspects of a true hunter and were based on various creatures that were hunted by the guild often.

Outside were several other hunter each talking to one another and smoking. You spot Mezetl to your surprise, never pegged him a smoker, as he happily listens to others speak of their own adventures and soaking in their tales. Upon see you he excuses himself as he put his smoke out and come to greet you.

“Roberto, good to see you, me and Akihito arrived not to long ago. He’s inside already.”
“And Shoda?” you ask
“Don't know, I haven't been inside yet.” you see concern go across his face, he must be worried about if his wound might keep him from the night, not that you wouldn't understand if it did. You push the massive wooden door open with a soft creak and enter the guildhall...

>Continued
>>
“And so the beast had us on all sides with 5, no 7, of his ugliest cronies to try and protect itself as it looked for a way out.” Or Shoda was the first to arrive and was busy retelling the day's adventure to everyone, with some embellishments. He seemed to have the ear of at least a fourth of the guildhall as they all look over the shoulders to listen in from their own tables. Even a few of the guild girls who handled the mission handouts up above were leaning over the railing to listen in.

“And with a battle cry we charge in, and I see both Mez and Robby fell each and every casavira. The force of their combined swings caused a whirlwind of carnage to form briefly and made an opening for me and Aki.” He makes a wide sweep of his arms and almost spilled the content of the cup he held out over the listeners who were to close. “ And so we charged the fleeing beast side by side when it saw us and realized that we were coming for it relentlessly.”

You look over and see Aki who was smiling with his chin in his hand on the table as you and Mezetl took a seat next to him. “You know,” Akihito spoke quietly to you as to not disturb the story, “I’d be mad about his lying if he didn't make us look so good while doing it.” You can’t help but laugh at that as a guild attendants come by with a few cups for Mezetl and yourself with a promise of a plate of food coming out soon.

The guild provided food and drink, along with many other services including the bathhouse and others, for the hunters here at a small cost that gets taken out of their rewards after successful hunts. It was something every hunter made sure to take advantage of here.

“And so with a swing that upheaved the very earth, the alpha swung at us, desperate to take one of us down with him. Seeing this attack coming, i bravely leapt in front of the attack, deftly catching the tips of its fangs with my blades and stopped the attack.” You remember him flying off like sack of grain tossed out a window. “With the monster stopped Akihito took the final strike and lopped the beast’s head off!” the room cheers as Akihito stood up with a raised cup and turns it up right into his mouth to finish it off before handing it off to someone and be given a new one. He sits back down with smile .

“He got here first and has been drinking since.” Akihito informs you as Shoda finishes his regaling to the others before he joins back with you. You earn a few pats on the back as the revelers go back to their own tables leaving your group to themselves. You can clearly see the red blush across Shoda’s face as he sways next to Akihito.

>One more
>>
The four of you talk for a bit when a familiar presence is felt behind you. Shoda and Akihito seem to sit up straight at the sight. You turn to see your grandfather. “That was quite the tale Shoda. I must be getting old though, cause I don't remember it like that.” He says with his arms crossed and a stoney glare at Shoda who just chuckles to himself nervously.

“Well I’m not here to ruin your fun, I'm here to give you these.” he produced four blue emblems in the shape of a shield with the mark of the hunter guild on them and hands one to each of you. “These will let you undergo entry level hunts without me. You proved you can handle that much at least, and you'll need them to prepare for your rite.” you all seem to marvel at it for a bit, you think Akihito is drooling.

“There are some rules though. First off, no solo hunts, you will go as a team, all four of you.” Akihito deflates a bit at that. “Second, if you encounter anything not listed in the mission report you are to flee. Understood.” You all look at him and nod “Good. Your initiation will be in a week and I expect all of you to be prepared and pass with flying colors. Cause if you don’t, I’ll feed you to the caravisas myself. Carry on.”

With that he hobbles off, his leg brace still not fixed, and left the four of you to your evening. No one speaks as they all just soak in the moment. You were very close to being true hunters.

“So, what do we do now?” Akihito breaks the silence first “I’m ready for the next hunt as soon as we can.” you cna see him read to launch out of his chair.
“Perhaps something small, to prepare a bit more before we tackle a larger mark.” Mezetl speaks up and Shoda nods in agreement a little too hard.
“Aaah come on. We handled that caravisa pack expertly we can tackle the next big hunt for sure!” Akihito goads
“Is there even a next big hunt?” Shoda speaks up trying very hard to keep his head from swaying and failing.
“I have it on good authority there is. A pair of Ursawraiths were spotted not far off a nearby village.”
“That doesn't sound entry level…” You can help voice your concern about that. A full grown ursawraith were massive and one hell of a step up from a caravisa pack, especially two of them

“Apparently they’re pretty small, probably not even fully grown. On top of that a hunting party was already dispatch to handle one of them meaning there’s only one left for us. But if we want it we need to get on it now.” Akihito was look far to serious about this and Mezetl and Shoda shared a quick look before looking to you. Looks like you were the deciding vote.

“How about we don't risk getting ourselves seriously hurt or worse days before our initiation.” you state plainly to the crushing defeat of Akihito. Mezetl sits straight as he nod to himself, guess he’s pleased with your reasoning. Shoda seems to be trying to get the last drops of his drink out of his cup before giving up and holding it to have it replaced with a new one only to find a someone grabbing his wrist.

“Jeez you guys couldn’t even pace yourselves until we got here?” The red haired lady speaks as she lets go of Shoda’s arm. There a thud next to you as a long, raven haired girl unceremoniously plops next you, head to table and arms splayed out.
“Less complaining, more drinking.” She groans out as she waves a hand above her hand trying to signal for someone to give her a something to drink.
“Don’t mind Mia, she's just grumpy she spent the whole day at the shrine getting ready for our hunt tomorrow.” Joanna let go of Shoda’s wrist as she takes a seat next to him. Shortly after everyone has filled cups and a plate of food. Seems today was shanks of boswine with a green loaf bread made from various herbs.

“So what were you guys talking about?” Joanna ask in between bites of meat.
“We were discussing what to do next in preparation for initiation” Mezetl explains
“I was hoping for something big, but everyone seems to want to play it safe.” Akihito groans before shoving food into his mouth.
“Probably for the best, things have been pretty hectic out there.” Mia speaks up seemingly almost done with her meal, “I'm just glad we got a simple hunt for slitherwhomps. The only hard part is finding them.”
“Slitherwhomps?” Mezetl speaks up. You forget he wasn’t originally from Sousato.
“Big snakes, about as long as two of these tables and have big clubs on the end of their tails.” Shoda explains seemingly more sober with food in him now.
“They ambush their prey and wrap them up with their bodies before beating them over the head with their tails.” Mia make a show of gripping the leftover bone of her meal and beating it with her fork. “ The bastards know how to hide too, but I’ve been reading up on them so i know just where to look for them.” Mia holds the tenderized bone triumphantly to her face as she squeezes it.
“I’m just hoping i’ll get some time to do some mining out there, we’ll be in the southern ruins after all.” Joanna seemed bored with idea of hunting her mark.

>continued
>>
When everyone finished their meals Akihito gets up and motions for you to follow. “Come on, let's go check out what's available. If we can I wanna set out tomorrow morning.” You get up to follow him as you hear sounds of Mia and Shoda asking for more to drink with Joanna goading them both on.

You and Akihito navigate the crowded guildhall, seeing hunters converse together over meals and drinks as they share stories and plane hunts over maps, and ascend to the second floor of the guild. The revelry from down below can still clearly be heard but the atmosphere is much different. Instead of hunters enjoying themselves it’s clerks and scholars going over pages and geographic maps and organizing books and sheets of paper. The smell of booze and food is still there but the smell of glue, ink, and dust now comes through very strong. Banners regaling old history wordlessly over tapestry hang from the high ceilings and are kept looking lustrous with constant maintenance.

You make your way to the job counter where a guild girl waits and welcomes you both. “Well if it isn’t tonight's stars. I hope you guys are enjoying yourselves tonight.” She says as she puts a hand on her hip. “So, before we move on I need you guys to show me what you got.” she raises her eyebrows at the two of you. Akihito looks to you out of shock but quickly regains himself as you pull out the blue emblems you were given not to long ago to hand over and does the same himself.
“Perfect! I’ll go get you your job options” she says after she does quick inspection and hands them back to you and saunters off.

“Get your mind out of the gutter.” you state quietly to Akihito once you're certain she not in earshot
“It’s her eyes man.” he moans into the table surface as he hides his head with his arms.
“Riight, that where your looking.” He groans unhappily with you. “Do you even know her name?”
“Do you?” he shoot right back at you as he picks his head up. Awkward silence fills the air. You’ve seen her around but everyone up here is pretty new to you.

“Alright, looks like slim pickings tonight. If you don't like these ones we’ll have more tomorrow morning, first come first serve.” she says as she slides a thin folder on the table. Inside are three individual hunts and their info.

“How about some Shelkiloths.” You say picking up the hunt form for them. “Shouldn't be to difficult to handle, and still offers a decent reward.”
“They’re pretty hardy, but they don't move too fast so it shouldn't take to long.” says taking the papers from you. “Jeez they want ten of em? How many are out there?” he questions the guild girl.
“Last report said they spotted thirty over by Uhari Lake, but that was almost a week ago.”
“A week? Is this job really that old?” You interrupt her at the bit of information. Most jobs don’t go untouched for more than a few days unless it’s something too big for most hunters.
“Yeah, with the initiation coming up most other hunters leave the small jobs for the new blood to take so they have a chance to train and prepare. But this one got ignored even before that due to most hunter not wanting to deal with a few ornery shelkiloths. To make matters even stranger, observers have been reporting strange movements of shelkiloth along the streams and rivers, saying they’ve been moving towards Uhari.” she crosses her arms under her chest as she contemplates the details.
“Well sounds like the perfect job for a couple of rowdy up-and-comers to handle!” Akihito gives an excited grin as he hands the paperwork to the guild girl. She reaches under the table a pulls out a stamps and hammers it to the paper four times before ripping a small bit off at the bottom and handing the larger piece to akihito.

“All set then, just show this and your hunter emblems to the guild post at the north gates and you’ll be clear to go.” She smiles as she puts the stamps away before looking at the both of you and taking a bow. Akihito and you couldn't help but notice how much of her chest you could see when she does that, though you try to to stare to hard as she stands back up. “Thank you and good hunting.” You both give awkward goodbyes as you make your way back down the stairs

As you descend back into the revelry you speak with Akihito. “So you wanted to leave tomorrow morning?”
“Yeah, crack of dawn if we can, sooner we get it done sooner we get back and grab the next one!” He punches a fist into his open palm, crushing the hunting papers in the process. Quickly realizing the damage to the paperwork he tries to straighten them out being careful not to tear them. “Did you have something you needed to do before we left?” You consider it for a moment and the only thing that comes to mind is picking up your weapon, but Jorta is usually up early. You wonder if he ever sleeps sometimes.

Again I'm really sorry about this and I hope I still see you guys next sunday. Be patient and happy hunting everyone!]
