You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

It's only been a couple days after you've "woken up" and you're already being shipped out for another mission. I felt like the mission tempo was really starting to pick up. You felt that not only was the Admiral motivated by the Stranger's warning about the Abyssal Colossus and Queen, but the higher ups were also getting more confident from the string of victories under his belt and were pushing for a quick end to this long war.

However, you knew the Admiral, and you knew that he wasn't about to commit any sort of large scale attack into the Dark Zone until he knew everything about it. And that was part of why you were here as well.

But this time, you weren't flying north, but south instead. While the southern Dark Zone had been relatively quiet and the surrounding waters rigorously patrolled by Royal Navy shipgirls operating out of the Falklands, there had been reports of odd Abyssal activity. In addition, it seemed like there was some sort of theory that the Admiral wanted to test. Otherwise she wouldn't have sent Anna with you.

Other than her, though...

It was just you and Anna on this one. The Admiral still needed every shipgirl he could get to keep the Bering Sea secure. Thankfully, the Royal Navy had kindly offered their own garrisoned shipgirls to help support you.

In addition, Dorsetshire, Repulse, Haida, and Blyskawica were tagging along with you, too, considering that they were RN as well. Well, technically RN for the last two.

Anyways, your plane was going to be landing at the Falklands base pretty soon. Dorsie was sitting quietly, reading a book. Repulse was trying to get her smartphone to work, and Haida and Blys seemed to be reading a magazine that had them very interested.

Anna seemed to be taking a nap, the volume on her headphones turned up so high you could hear the music blaring from the speakers. How the hell does she sleep like that?

Oddly enough, Dorsie was holding her book in an angle where it would be difficult for an outside observer to see what exactly she was reading. And it was just odd enough that you suspected she was doing it on purpose.

Plus the book was really, REALLY thick. Like, you could probably stuff that into one of your cannons and fire it and it'd probably kill an Abyssal from the sheer impact.

As you head up, you crane your head just a bit and manage to catch a glimpse of the cover. That, combined with the coloring on the edges, and you quickly manage to narrow down the possibilities.

"Heh, pretty interesting to see a grown up cruiser like you reading Harry Potter." You grin.

Dorsie's body seems to freeze in place, but you see her eyes very, VERY slowly turning to meet yours. She slides a bookmark on the pages, closes the book, and carefully files it away.

Boy did she take that British stoicism pretty seriously.

"I'd appreciate it if you'd not snoop into others' reading habits." Dorsie coughs, trying to stay as calm as possible. "I was merely catching up with my country's literary history. It's been a rather long 70 years, after all."

"Pffffft, it's fine! Ya don't have to worry so much!" You roll your eyes.

"Better!" You grin. "I watched all the movies!"

Dorsie just gives an utterly horrified look, as if she was trying to decide whether to vomit or slap you.

"Not a movie person?"

"It's just..." Dorsie coughs to regain her composure. "I don't think they do the books justice."

"Whatever." You shrug. "Ain't got time to read all those monsters, ya know what I mean?"

"You do have a point." Dorsie grins. "The later books are thick enough to stop battleship shells."

Suddenly, you're all jolted when the plane touches down on the tarmac. Repulse, Haida, and Blys are snapped out of their respective distraction while Anna flails around as she's suddenly awoken, practically rolling out of her seat and into the aisle.

"Jeez Anna, you're always so jumpy." You laugh as you help her up to her feet.

"W-well, I was caught off guard!" Anna pouts. "And weren't you supposed to wake me up when we were getting close?"

"Whoops." You smile and shrug.

"Come on, you're holding the plane up." Haida reminds you both as the others disembark.

"Right, right." You laugh as you drag Anna along.

And outside, you're immediately met by-

Almost immediately, you are rammed by a fast moving blur of color as whatever had just hit you keeps going and slams into Repulse, sandwiching you between the two bodies.

"RRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEPPP!" The British battlecruiser that literally just ran you down cries.

"REN!" Repulse laughs. "It's been FOREVER!"

"Renown." Dorsie nods respectfully. "Hoel, this is Renown, Repulse's sister ship.

"Yeah, I heard." You croak as the weight of two battlecruisers presses into you from both sides.

"Oh! You must be Hoel! The one who's been looking out for Rep!" Renown says happily as she hugs you tighter.

Was this how things were going to end?

"Er, do you need assistance...?" Dorsie wonders.

"N-no, this is fine." You croak. "Feels kinda nice, really."

"Hoeeeeeel." Anna pouts.

"Okay, break it up, break it up." Haida sighs as she pushes the two battlecruisers apart.

"Aw, Haida, Blys! It's so great to see you two around too!" Renown laughs as she sweeps the two destroyers up in another hug.

"Gah!" Haida gasps.

"K-kurwa!" Blys curses.

"It's good to see you again, Repulse." Dorsie nods. "I assume you'll be our escort?"

"That's right!" Renown nods. "I understand you're doing some sort of experiment!"

"We want to know if the north and south Dark Zones are connected somehow!" Anna explains. "We have recon teams moving into the north DZ, while I'll set up my beacon in the south, and we'll see if they can pick it up!"

"I did not understand a word you said, but it sounds fun!" Renown nods rapidly.

Meanwhile, Haida and Blys try to wriggle their way out of Renown's iron grip.

"I was under the impression that the Admiralty would provide some carrier support, too." Dorsie looks around."

"You guys go on ahead!" You grin. "I'll go find those carriers of yours!"

"Wait!" Renown calls out, but you're already gone.

Thankfully, you still remember how to get around the Falklands naval base, your memory from the last time you were here serving you well. In addition, you also had your radar at your disposal, which you use to ping the base. Oddly enough, you don't find many shipgirls in the base itself. Looked like Exeter, Achilles, and Ajax were out?

However, you did spot a single carrier shipgirl on the docks and home in. Once you get visual contact, you see that it's Victorious, sitting on the edge of the dock with a troubled look on her face as her twintails flapped in the ocean breeze.

"Not agaaaaaain!" Vicky wails, this event all too familiar with her.

"Vicky! there you are!" Renown says happily as you bring the carrier to the tea table. "Where have you been?"

"Ah, well..." Vicky pauses.

"Where are the others?" Dorsie frowns. "I though Ark Royal was supposed to be with you?"

"About that..." Vicky looks at the ground nervously. "Apparently there were Abyssal sightings off the coast of South America so Ark Royal and Exeter left to investigate. So it's... er... just me here now."

"This wasn't part of the plan." Dorsie narrows her eyes. "What's the Admiralty thinking?"

"Hey, it's just one carrier, we can do fine with just Vicky, right?" Renown bobs up and down.

"It's still a little concerning..." Haida says with concern.

"Well, no helping it now!" Repulse shrugs. "Besides, it's just an escort job, right? It'll be easy!"

"Y-you just jinxed it!" Anna whimpers.

"Bloody hell, I just did, didn't I?" Repulse coughs.

"Er, wasn't this mission supposed to be time sensitive or something...?" Blys asks as she tries to get everybody back on the same page.

"Well, I guess we can wait for them to come back." You shrug.

"We'd have to call the Admiral to delay the mission, then." Dorsie sighs. "We can't very well send Paz and Woel into the Dark Zone if we don't get the beacon set up."

"He's not going to be happy to hear that." Haida cautions.

"Well, I suppose it'll be bad if we venture out with the rest of the garrison deployed." Repulse shrugs.

"I hope it doesn't get dark before then..." Vicky sighs.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have 3 points!

Several more hours pass, and the sun starts to get perilously low in the sky when the other RN shipgirls finally return. In addition to Exeter, Achilles, and Ajax, you see a fourth shipgirl. The second carrier, you presume.

"Ark Royal?" Dorsie blinks in surprise. "They sent you down here?"

"Well, the weather is more agreeable for our planes down here." The British carrier smiles.

"I apologize for taking our leave without any sort of notice." Exeter says apologetically. "I know that you were expecting more support from us, which we didn't provide when needed."

"Hey, don't worry about it." You shrug. "Looks like we still got daylight left, right?"

"That's true." Exeter nods. "If we move quickly, we can have this done before it gets dark. The Abyssal tend to become more active and our aircraft become less effective."

"Perhaps we should just hold off until tomorrow." Haida frowns. "We're operating under a pretty tight time constraint now."

"C'mon, we've done plenty of missions in the dark!" Blys laughs and slaps her fellow destroyer on the back. "What's one more?"

"I guess we can hold things off until tomorrow." You shrug. "No sense in rushing things."

"Well, it's a good thing we already arranged lodging for all of you!" Exeter smiles. "Though, it pains me to request this of our guests, but would there be any volunteers for night patrol? I only ask for a couple of hours of your time."

"You can't do it yourselves?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Truth be told, we're stretched rather thin at the moment, and most of our shipgirls are already out on assignment." Exeter admits.

"I suppose I can help out." Haida shrugs.

"Yessss!" Blys adds ins.

Of course the destroyers volunteer.

"Sure, why not." You shrug as you step forward. "Might as well help out, too."

"M-me too!" Anna steps forward alongside you.

"Anna?" You blink.

"It's going to be dark, so having two radars looking out instead of one will make a big difference!" Anna insists. "Besides, it's not like it's my first night patrol, either!"

You get the feeling that there's more to her reasoning, but you don't want to bring it up out here of all places.

And, well, that's sort of how you ended up out in the middle of the south Atlantic, patrolling in a wide circle around the Falklands. Everywhere you looked was just pitch black, the sky and air just as dark and foreboding as the deep sea abyss below you.

Wasn't too bad, though. You at least had Haida, Blys, and Anna to keep you company, though none of you really talked much, instead focusing on your duties. Maybe it was your proximity to the Dark Zone, or maybe it was something the air, but something was putting you all on edge that none of you were in the particular mood to talk.

You decide to keep your eye on your radar, and you're very glad you did. Like a rising tide, contacts begin showing up, emerging from the Dark Zone and depths like the nocturnal creatures of old.

"Everybody! We got incoming!" You yell

"I'm sending warning to the base!" Anna announces.

"What do we have?" Haida asks.

"Ugh." You frown as you try to concentrate. You could see a relatively large fleet coming your way. Destroyers, cruisers, battleships, the whole shebang. There were also a number of Abyssal combat forms you didn't immediately recognize. But your radar was giving you all sorts of weird, conflicting information about them. Couldn't pin down their exact size of armament.

Some kind of support Abyssal? You weren't sure.

"We should fall back." Haida suggests.

"If we run now, there's nothing stopping these guys from just rolling into the Falklands!" Blys points out. "We gotta fight 'em until the big guns arrive!"

"They're scrambling! We should expect reinforcements soon!" Anna announces.

One problem with trying a torpedo attack: there's only ten tubes between Haida and Blys, and they aren't the long range kind. We gave up our tubes for missiles, remember?
>>
>>1787930

So use our missiles to decoy them on to a track following just Hoel, while the rest set up for a night time torpedo and gun attack coordinated between Hoel and Anne via uplink.

Well, there was no choice. You'd have to stand your ground, or at least go for a fighting retreat. The last thing you needed was to leave the way to the Falklands naval base completely wide open for them to sail straight through.

Already you could see Haida and Blys release a spread of torpedoes and draw their weapons. Haida her cannons and knife while Blys clutched her trusty lance.

"T-they're coming!" Anna warns, her antenna fully deployed and straight.

You had half a mind to send Anna back right now, make a run for the relative safety of the base. But it was a bad idea to split up the group, especially with the enemy so close...

You fire off your cannons, matching Haida and Blys' attacks. The darkness is lit by muzzle flashes and tracers and shells zipped out, landing among the approaching Abyssal force. You're almost instantly rewarded with the sight of explosions and fires from direct hits.

"Haha! Yeah!" You whoop. "Eat that you damn-"

However, your bravado is cut short when you hear Anna scream.

"Anna?" Your heart stops as you whip around. "ANNA!"
