The castle continues its preparations for the battle of the century. For them, they have all day to prepare for the festivities. You think after the big event, there's going to be several contests, awards, parades. For the people organizing the event, the day is just starting. For you, it feels like it's almost to an end.

It's about at this time you start to wonder if you've prepared for the fight adequately. If you had another week, you would have tried to maybe spend more time trying to learn the magic side of things. Maybe you would have spent more time mentoring the younger heroes, because you're starting to realize that they might have a disadvantage in fighting someone many centuries older than they are. There's also a part of you who wonders if it still isn't too late to get some last-minute training done with them. These would be great thoughts to have maybe yesterday or the day before that, but you didn't have those thoughts then. Nor do you have two or three days to prepare for those last-minute concerns.
In fact, you have less than twenty minutes.

You are Jack Albator, handsome fighter, mighty warrior, and are about to go head-to-head with the mightiest warrior of them all. This battle is a contest between your hero team and a hero from a long-lost kingdom. He's older than you, faster, more powerful, and most likely mightier.
Unlike you, though. He doesn't have an army or five other heroes at his back. It's going to be everyone against him, and you like your odds.

That's something you'll have to worry about, soon. Right now, you're having a last-minute pep talk with one of your crew. That person being the white-haired boy known only as 'Dorje'. He's having a peculiar problem, and you're not sure that you can relate.

"So that's the problem yer havin'? Ye don't like that the girls are pushin' ye around?" You set down your mug of liquid encouragement.
"Sort-of. I think Eileen likes me, and she's my summoner. At the same time, she's really pushing me to go on a date with Kayda. What do I do?"

>Worry about this until after we defeat an ancient hero, please.

Don't want to slip this into the current situation (except maybe in the back of his head?) but just open discussion: we should really decide beforehand what we're doing with Jack's girl problem.

The way I see it, and the way we should try to explain things:
>Jack went with Tulie first
>Other girl demanded a turn
>That wasn't fair to Tulie, but we wanted to make her happy
>We went with Tulie first, and we should stick with that until she's done with us.
>Might not be that long at this point, but it's the only sorta fair thing we can manage
>We'd do the same if the shoe were on the other.. ehm, if it were the other way around.

"Well, which one do ye like the most?"
"I don't know that, Jack." He sighs.

"Then, go on a date, and find out fer yeself. If yer both happy, then go fer it. If ye rather be with yer summoner, then do what makes ye happy."
"But I don't know what makes me happy."

"Then try datin' both, it might make ye happy as long as ye don't do it fer very long."
"I-I don't know, Jack, I'm-"

"If yer askin' me to make a decision fer ye, then yer out of luck." Immediately, the bartender notices that you've been subconciously drinking and sets another mug down next to you. You've been training him quite well. "All aye know is that we got 'bout fifteen minute until we fight Atlas, and ye know how aye'm gonna be feelin' after that encounter. If ye can't make up yer mind yet, then flip a coin er somethin'. Otherwise ye need to think about the big, hairy problem comin' up that can spit fire and ice and ye."

Dorje sighs, and taps his finger.
Gently, he reaches into his pocket and grasps a tiny silver coin. He fumbles around with it in his hand before flipping it clean into the air.

It lands on the table with a chatter. Even from here, you can see that it landed on heads.

"I'll go ask Kayda out after the battle."
"Attaboy, now make yerself ready."

You pat his head and stand up. It's time for you to get ready for the fight, as well.

You return to the armory and grab your weapons. Axel took special care to sharpen your cutlass, as well as clean your pistol. You need to take that guy out for a beer sometime.
He's a little full of himself, but that's how you know a skilled craftsman.

Kayda and Louise seem to have taken your advice. You catch a glimpse of them by the courtyard, talking to Keiko. They appear to be dressed in their barrier jackets with no frills, no extras, just the jackets in their pure and functional form. At least this way they can repair them in-battle instead of having to take a break because one of their tops fell off.

Yuuki appears to be talking to Fritelli about something. Something that seems rather urgent, but you can trust she can handle it.

So, that appears to be everyone. Is there anything else you need to do?

>Nope, take to the field.

>Well sure, it's the principle of the thing though. Also, remember just how long these terms can be. Also also, that Jack's antics can probably get old pretty quickly, especially for a more mature future Tulie.
Come on, Jack's the one who's reasonably responsible here.
And it sure looks to be actual romance between them instead of just lust.

I get you might like the snek, but don't push the relationship with Tuile into being something it isn't.

I was a bit more wordy than jack would be. Just leave it at "I went to her first, so it should be her turn until I screw that up. Seems fair."

You take a short drink. It feels like it's time to take to the field.

At least, you feel like you should. At the same time, you understand that there is something that you want to drill into someone's head before you take to the field. Something important, and hopefully impressive enough to make sure they keep it in mind when push comes to shove.

You quietly slip away, and try to find a couple of important people that you don't think have heeded your warnings very seriously.

Ah, it seems Cody did show up. He was one of those important people. He's talking with Aligot at the moment, who was another person you wanted to speak to. So you're going to let them to it, and instead look for another pair of important people.

Wait, there's Madeleine. She appears to be making some potions for the soldiers. You're not sure if items are illegal, but who are you to complain about low-key cheating?

"'ey Madeleine."
"Heya Jack." She swirls some ichor inside of a glass vial, "Ready for the fight?"
"Aye am, but there's someone who aye'm not sure is quite ready. Wanna help me with that?"

"Sure Jack, who might that be?"

--

"So, when I give this hand gesture." Louise awkwardly waves her hand above her head, Kayda stares on with confusion. "-that's when you unleash the-"

"Heya girls." you interrupt their obvious scheming, "What're ye up to?"

"Nothing!"
"Nothing.."

"Listen, aye know ye both want te do yer best today. But aye think Madeleine wants to give you a talk about something before ye both go in."

"Uh."
"Okay." Kayda seems less than interested, "What do you want to tell us?"

"To do your best, of course." Madeleine uses this opportunity to hug both of the young heroes, "-But also, to keep either of you from having to see me. You know you'll be back in the infirmary if you overdo it, right? That means you'll have me as your doctor."

"Really?" Louise blinks, "I don't see what's so bad about that."

"I made a drink for both of you. Why don't you take a sip?"

Madeleine hands two vials of delicious-looking blue liquid to the two young heroes. They eye it suspiciously, and then slowly put the vials to their lips.

"GGAAH." Louise spits onto the ground.
Kayda starts coughing erratically.

"That's a health potion." Madeleine winks, "And I'll make sure you drink one every day if you have to come see me. Are we clear?"

"Yes Ma'am." They say in unison.
"Keep the potions, you might need it in the fight." Madeleine smiles.

>Alright, now that is done, go see if Aligot is free.

You think you'll visit Aligot real quick before you take to the field. You had a magic-related question you wanted to ask him.

You retrace your steps (being sure to stop by the bar to top off, just in case), and find Aligot making last-minute preparations.

"'ey, Aligot."
"Jack! You ready for the fight?"

"Aye think aye am, are ye goin' te participate?"
"I think so." Aligot seems to have packed a number of spells and strange objects.

"That's kinda weird, aye thought ye weren't gonna after talkin' to ye yesterday."
"Well, I had a change of heart." Aligot grinds his heel in the sand, "So, what's up?"

"Aye'm curious, ye know about water magic, right?"

"I have a few tricks with it, why?"

"Aye have an ace up my sleeve, but aye might need some extra liftin'. When aye give the signal, can ye follow my lead?"

You give him a hand gesture that he will hopefully remember.

"I don't think that's a very polite gesture." Aligot scoffs.
"Well it's one aye'm familiar with, so it's the best aye can do."

"Okay, fair enough, just be sure not to use it accidentally or something before it's time."
"Aye'll try."

"So, other than that, do you like your chances?" Aligot shifts around some of his backpack.
"Aye'm not sure yet, and aye rather not think about it."

"Fair enough. Just let me know when, and I'll do what I can to help."

You don't want to explain the whole plan to him. You're worried he might try activating the trap before you do.
Aligot walks away, and you feel a tap on your shoulder.

You turn around, and are met with Cody.
"That's hilarious, isn't it?" Cody smiles.
"Whar?" You feel confused.

"C'mon Jack, you didn't notice something different about Aligot?" Cody is smiling, you're not sure what to make of it.

"Err, he's in the battle, right? He mentioned somethin' about being talked into it. Did ye do that?"
"No, no. Not me." cody smiles, and points over your shoulder, "Her."

You look over your shoulder to see Cassata; the ranger from Bruschetta. She showed up in Yuuki's caravan the other day with Anna and Aligot, and apparently has known Yuuki for a while. You don't know her very well, but you suspect she has a distaste for you like the rest of the Bruschetta soldiers.

"Alright, why's that important?"
"'Cause she convinced Aligot to join the fight last night after she fucked him." Cody's barely keeps himself from laughing, "Fucked like rabbits."

>Try not to laugh, also.
>Go congratulate Aligot!
>Nope, nope. None of your business. File it away in the back of your mind.

You look at Aligot as he walks away, and then look back at Cassata.
You-

Oh god you can't contain it.

You start chuckling, trying not to burst out into a full-on laugh. That's hilarious. That's great, even! You're glad that Aligot finally found himself a way to get-

"Takes all kinds, eh?"
Cody loses his veneer of seriousness and loses his composure. You quickly follow behind him until you both look like a gaggle of hyenas.

"Y-eah but," You try to breathe, just focus on breathing, "Yeah but, aye gotta know, how do ye know about this?"
"Oh, that?" Cody is still grinning, "I saw Cassata leaving his room earlier. So, I just walked up and asked 'Hey, what are you doing in his room this early in the morning?', and she just straight-up told me; "Oh that? I slept with Aligot."

You laugh, "And ye believed her?"
"No reason not to, Aligot's been in a suspiciously good mood all day as well."

"So that's just it, then? She wanted a lay, and got one?"
"Well you know Bruschetta Jack, it's a country staffed mostly by women and she comes from a castle

That just makes it even funnier.
You don't know why, but the whole thing comes off as just hilarious.

"Alright, aye was thinkin' of going and ribbin' him about it, but aye'll save it until after the battle."
"Hah, I already got my ribbing in." Cody laughs, "We should take him out for drinks later. Maybe buy him one."

"Aye, just one."

"Yep, just one."

"Alright Cody, aye'll see ye on the battlefield."

"Best of luck, and remember-" Cody smiles, "Watch for my traps."

You let him take to the field, and decide that it may be a fine time for you to do that as well. You try to think if there's one last thing you want to do before that happens.

Time for one last check on the ladies, and then you're taking to the field.

You weave through the crowd, and to the backlines. You want to be sure that you see Tuile face-to-face. You want to give her the same words of wisdom that you gave Kayda and Louise.

Fortunately, there's Tuile.
But also, there Yuuki.

They're talking about something, but Yuuki seems more uncomfortable than anything else.
Oh no, did Tuile find out? Is she ribbing on her right now?

Tuile finishes her discussion by rubbing Yuuki's head. She gives a quick "Break a leg!" before Yuuki scurries off into the crowd of soldiers.

"Jack, Good news!" Tuile is smiling, "Bruschetta's soldiers are just in time. So we're going to have a full army on our hands!"
"Yar, that's great Lass. Is that all ye were talking about?"

Tuile, of course, gives a less-than-honest smile.
"Oh, you noticed, huh?" Her toothy grin answers all the questions you may have had, "I was also congratulating our budding young girl on becoming a woman."

You laugh, "Aye, ye have to-"
Wait.

Wait, how?

"-Ye sure? Aye saw her goin' to-"

Oh.
OH!

You feel as if a gear clicked into place based on the conversation you had earlier. Now you feel kind of dumb. Educated, but dumb.
Educated in ways you didn't know were possible. You would ask Tuile how Anna and Yuuki could- 'dock', but you're not going to out yourself as being uneducated on the matter.

Instead, you're going to pretend that you knew all along.

"-te the bar earlier. She had a, err, 'good time' last night?" Yes, that sounds natural. Nice one, Jack.

"I would hope so, but then again, I'm not one to ask." Tuile's tail brushes against her cheek, "You come to wish me luck, Jack?"

Without another word, you lean over and catch her lips. Her cheeks warm up into a deep-red blush.
"Just wanted te say, don't hurt yerself." You smile at her.
"Same to you, tough guy." She lightly hits your chest with a glowing hand. Probably put some weird spell or something on you. "I heard what you said about Atlas earlier. You're acting as if this is just your fight. If YOU'RE hurt, I want YOU to pull back, got it?" Tuile's tail nudges your face, next.

"Yar, got it."
You have no intention of doing that, but you don't want her worrying about you.

"Attaboy." She gives you a light hug, "See you out in the fray."
Tuile turns and disappears off into the crowd. Leaving you to get ready to face the battle.

You think it's about time to take to the field. You start walking toward the front-lines as the announcer gets ready.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMAN!"
You forgot how much you disliked that shrill voice. It's been a while since your last 'war', hasn't it?

"WELCOME TO THE GRAND WINTER FESTIVAL!" The voice continues to blare over whatever kind of magic they're using to amplify sound. "THE OPENING GAMES ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN!"

You wish you could just teleport to about two hours later. Just after this entire dick-waving contest is over. You want to sleep, and you have some serious life decisions you have to think about.

Then again, Atlas might feel the same way you do. Speaking of which, has he even moved?

You peer across the field to the unmoving figure. Even the announcement of the starting time hasn't moved him an inch.
This is either going to go really well or really poorly. You can't tell which, just yet.

"IN ONE CORNER, THE HERO AND SAVIOR OF BISCOTTI, JACK ALBATOR!"
You hear a light cheer off in the distance.

Not nearly enough cheering, hmph.

Atlas still hasn't moved. The armies are setting up their defenses and formations. You count.. six, maybe seven formations. This should be enough to overwhelm just one guy, right?

"IN THE OTHER CORNER, THE ANCIENT BARBARIAN, THE PRE-HISTORIC BRUISER, THE IMMORTAL WARRIOR; ATLAS!"
Aye, why did he get more titles than you? Also, are more people cheering for him?

Whatever, you're going to pretend you didn't hear it.

Wait, there's some movement.
Atlas slowly rises to his feet. His joints creak and pop with such force that you can hear it from halfway across the field. His back is still facing you.

"READY?!" The announcer shouts to the assembled armies.

You look to pinpoint the exact placement of each and every hero. Louise and Kayda are sticking near the Gallete armies. Tuile is heading Biscotti's army, and has Dorje taking the lead. Cody seems to be in front of whatever army Pastillage brought along. Yuuki is, naturally, front and center of Bruschetta's forces.

Yet, here you are. Standing by yourself, in the center of it all.

"GO!" A starting pistol fires, followed by almost deafening silence.
Let the games begin.

Something's wrong; he's still not turned to the armies who are now gradually approaching him. If he waits too long, then the armies are going to box him in and contain him to a tiny little corner of the courtyard and he'll have to fight his way out.
You're not going to approach too quickly. You doubt he would make such a simple mistake as to get boxed in almost a minute into the match.

You need to keep an eye out, especially on the ground. Earth magic seems to be something he favors, and that means he has the advantage on the defensive. Not to mention his physical power is just as good as his magic power.
Carefully, you approach the mountain of a man. There's a bad feeling that seems to hang over you like a cloud.

As you approach, you're noticing that several rows of soldiers are already outpacing you. They seem to have the same idea you do, but aren't considering if Atlas had planned for this or not.

"Jack." You hear it yell. His back is turned to you, but he somehow knows that you're there.
You feel yourself reaching for your gun. Not that you think it will do much good; any confrontation with Atlas will probably come down to your sword.

"I would like to you know, Jack. Whatever happens today, I still respect you as a hero." Atlas shouts in the wrong direction, but his voice is still powerful enough to make it clearly audible to you. "-Because you're not the one to fall for tricks like this."

Atlas immediately spins around and throws out a green rope of some sort?!
No, it's not a rope, it's a vine! It's a.. leafy vine that he seems to have wrapped around his arm! It's at least several hundred feet long, and he's holding it as if it's a length of rope. Where did he get that? What's so special about it compared to say, a chain? And those-
THOSE ARE SOME SHARP SPIKES ADORNING THE STEM OF THAT VINE!

You duck down just as the plant soars just above your head. The near-miss sends a shiver up your spine. Each tiny thorn seems to have been polished to a mirror shine. Did Atlas do that? Or is that just a thing this plant can do? Either ways, it wouldn't have been pretty if it hit you.

Which is why you're confused why the plant doesn't seem to be moving away. It hangs in the air momentarily before moving slightly in your direction!
The stem is quickly picked up by the momentum of Atlas' swing, and is carried far away from you. Are you crazy, or was that vine out for your blood there for a moment?

The vine continues to swing in a gigantic arc toward the soldiers who have taken up position slightly closer to Atlas. Quickly, they form into a shield wall.
Somehow, the stretchy plant clings to the shield wall, and then climbs OVER the wall of shields! The soldiers trying to swat and bat it away are quickly turned into puffballs as their feeble defense falls!

next step would be to have Louise zap him, he probably won't expect that.

Not sure that's wise, best water is going to do is deflect it, and I don't trust it to do it well.

Shoot first. I don't even trust fire to work here, not all plants burn well and he'd expect that approach. Of course, he might just appreciate the sense of it and just leave the vulnerability be.
Also if fire fails, order a hail of bullets/arrows.

Forgot this: AND might make fire work even more poorly afterwards.

And it isn't like catching it and turning it into tug-of-war will help much given Atlas.

At least it wasn't a 1. Hopefully 79 suffices.

a 79 is very good, I think we're fine.

That is crazy.
It's crazy, and the vine is coming back toward you!

Water? Would dousing it with water slow it down?

No, no. It's a plant. If anything, you don't want to accidentally make it stronger. What you need is..
Fire.

"Kayda!" You yell, turning your head to see where the armies are.

Unfortunately, Kayda is just a tad bit too far away to help with that. She also seems to be keeping her distance, which is good. You're not going to complain about her listening to you.
That said, you still need to do something about this vine.

Quickly, you take out your pistol. This is going to take a miracle shot, but you're a miracle man.

BLAM!
BLAM!
Grazed it, there.

BLAM!

The green rope detaches from its stem and rolls along the ground. Your head snaps back to Atlas to see what his response might be.
He's smiling.

His response is to cross his arms, and continue smiling at you.
Something still isn't right.
Quickly, you look back to the plant.

It's still moving!

Getting cut from its stem didn't stop it at all!

It slowly starts to stand on-end like a coiling viper! You fire another shot at it, and the vine aptly coils its way around the bullet.
Great.
Great, you say.

"Atlas." You sigh, "What the HELL is that?"
"That, Jack. Is a creeping martumi vine." You can almost feel him smiling, "It's a real bugger, they grow over fifteen feet in a single day and can live almost a week without being planted. I found that one on the way into town, and thought it would be helpful."

Aye, real helpful indeed.

>Okay, you need fire for this. Call for Kayda one more time.
>You can handle this, try and drown it.
>Superhuman strength time, grab it and rip it to shreds.
>Atlas thinks you're going to be distracted by this plant, prove him wrong by taking a swing at him.
>Other?

Since it's detached from Atlas now the army should be able to handle it

If that doesn't work, just make a water tornado and wash it somewhere far off.

Damn thing! It's starting to root itself into the ground!
Maybe you should restrain it?

Well, with what? Water? You've already determined that watering the thing was probably a bad idea.

Think Jack, think! You're not going to let a VINE beat you within the first ten minutes of the match, right?

Water..
Plants need water.
EVERYTHING needs water, what's your point?!

You think back to a trick you remember from earlier, something about alcohol. Something about pulling water from your canteen, something about-

It hits you. You know exactly what you need to do.

The vine lashes out at you once more, and you take advantage of its mistake! Quickly, you slash the vine right at the end of its reach.
Your hand cups over its now-open wound. Slowly, you start to pull.
And pull.
And pull.

The vine, at its base, starts to deflate like a balloon. Its brilliant green color withers into a much less vibrant brown. The end of the vine struggles to escape, but is trapped by its inability to move its lower half.
A bubble of water starts to pour out of the end of the severed tentacle. Its entire body starts to shrivel as it gives its last lash, and then cracks straight in half like a dry leaf.

You drop the dried vegetable, and turn back toward Atlas. He has the biggest smile on his face right now.
"Excellent, Jack! Now that's out of the way, we can fight for real."

"Did ye really pull a weed up and drag it over just te make me pissed? 'Cause it's workin."

"It's more than that, Jack. Look." Atlas points behind you.

That steady advance that the other armies were having? Completely dried up. It seems that watching Atlas devastate several formations all by himself in the blink of an eye has given them pause for thought about rushing over here. All of the lines anxiously await his next move.
Even the heroes.

In fact, you're the only one still standing who has stepped forward.

>CMON YE FLEA-BITTEN RODENTS, OVERPOWER HIM!
>No, this is what he wanted.
>Face him.
>Fall back and regroup!

>Ask him if that actually matters, or if he really wanted to test himself against the combined army.

"Atlas, tell me somethin'. Yer clearly just toyin' with me at the moment. Yer obviously stronger, faster, hell maybe even smarter than myself. Are ye doin' this to test my resolve er some nonsense, or did ye just want to test yourself against a combined army?"

There's very little else in life that offends you more than being patronized.

"Jack, you misunderstand me." Atlas stretches his arms, showcasing his mighty pecs. "I'm not singling you out because I have any test or game. It's as simple as you being the only one who would step up and face me. Look at your comrades."

You turn around to notice that they still haven't moved. They appear to be watching, and waiting for you to make the first move.

"Look at them, Jack. None of them brave enough to step forward like you have. I don't need to test you, Jack. I already know you're the best fighter this world could ask for. Which is why I admire you, Jack."

"Aye, so yer sayin' that the only reason ye called me out is because aye'm the only one dumb enough to step forward? If that's the case, aye'd like to stay back there, with the army."

Atlas laughs, "Nothing stopping you."

"Great."

With a leap, you rejoin with the nearest army. You land with a thud right next to Yuuki; who seems to jump at your arrival.

"Jack, I-"
You interrupt her with a message of your own.

"WHAT'RE YE WAITIN' FER? CMON' YE FLEA-BITTEN RODENTS, TIME TE MAKE YER COUNTRIES PROUD!"

There's a cheer that erupts over the assembled formations. All at once, they continue their march toward Atlas.

If things weren't unsettling enough; Atlas doesn't seem phased at all by this.
In fact, he seems rather happy!

Why is Atlas happy about watching several armies close in on his position?
Was he expecting this to happen? Does he want it to?

That's a terrifying thought. He actually wanted to fight everybody, but didn't expect you to be the only one who stepped forward.
Is this a bad idea? Sending everyone to fight him?

Speaking of which, you're not much of a general. How should you go about boxing him in?

>Have the heroes take the charge.
>Pincer. Move some of the formations to his flanks so he can't see everything at once.
>ALL-OUT ATTACK!
>On second thought, stop some of the armies here.
>Other?
