Juushiro leads you away from the fornt door, walking you through the short patches of foliage that had sprung up at the side of the house with a casual jaunt.

The look he gave you when he saw your confidence was strange, almost nostalgic. But as you walk through the now waist high shrubbery you realize that you're walking towards what appears to be a small altar of some sort. When you see the faceless little clay tokens and the kanji on the shrine you groan internally.

"Welcome to the shrine of Mimihagi. The village has worshipped him as a guardian spirirt for a long time, longer than the Ukitake family line or even the seretei has stood." Your escrot says. "Mother likes to do her little test here."

At the mention of her Betty seems to appear from the long grass like a spirit, her back and silver hair coming into view. She'd apparently been kneeling in prayer, with a... katana... in front of her...

"I think you'll remember this test is more than a trifling exam child." She says harshly, "I hope your newfound complacency is due to ability and not laziness Juushiro."

He moves off to the side making a gesture for you to stay where you are, "I assure mother, there's no complacenecy I'm trying to make sure Sukaretto-chan is relaxed."

"Well don't. She needs that tension and focus." Betty says rising to her full tiny height and drawing a katana taller than she is with a slow certainty. The look on her face is no longer kindly and without her glasses you can see the eyes of someone who has seen much war - studying you intensely. "Let's see if you can be trusted out of my sight child."

"Look, Betty I-"

The old woman simply talks over you, her low growl somehow dwarfing your attempts at diplomacy; "And mark my words child, you'll not be running off with no bandits. You'll be living out at this shrine everyday training until you're capable of landing a cut on me."

With a steady hand you spread your legs and draw Lucifer in slow surety. Taking note of Betty's seeming indifference of time, you allow yourself a look around the clearing.

The shrine has three steps up to it, giving a slight height advantage. Foliage is blowing in the wind slightly, but it seems mostly held together and won't really get in your eyes unless one of your cuts it. Beneath your feet, the ground is packed earth - probably a little more treacherous the further away from the shrine approach it becomes more treacherous.

"Juushiro. Correct her stance." Betty says, spinning her blade before clenching both hands around her hilt and pointing the tip to you, keeping the smooth edge parallel to the ground.

Your "brother" steps behind you and whispers in your ear, "She focuses on speed to overwhelm. As expected of former second division, but if ou tighten your stance and wait for her stamina to wear down or for a mistep... I'm sure you'll pass on first attempt." He makes a show of tightening your shoulders and elbows, forcing you into a much more structured and defensive stance, honestly it's kind of uncomfortable.

But you stand, elbows and shoulders locked, blade pointed squarely in front of you. The only difference between your stance in Betty's aside from the massive size difference is that her is that your blade points to the sky and hers to the ground.

With a grin you disapear in a flash, the whoosh of your movement filling your ears as the dull greens of the surroundings turn into a blur of nondescript colour. Midway through your step you ready your sword to strike the space Betty was, as the realization of her own whoosh step sinks in.

A blade nicks your face before your second whoosh step and you have to rpaidly learn how to chain them together as you see little flickers of motion in the corners of your eye. Instead of being the aggressor you find yourself acting on instinct and living from fraction of a second to the next as you find Betty's sword dancing on the edge of your kimono time and again.

Despite persistance, you end up on the back foot and pouring with sweat and blood in the opening exchange. Until a bit of inspiration strikes, as you whoosh into the air. From above, Betty looks even smaller as she searches the shrine for you. Juushiro hasn't even moved from his position; hands still hidden in his sleeves and that damn smile on his face.

You emerge, bloodied and furious from the explosion and dust like a crimson meteor, and you hear a slight "oh" of surprise from Juushiro as you land beside Betty and le tloose a flurry of sword strikes that push her a step back before you've risen from your crouching landing.

As you rise with an upward slash Betty hops back out of range, making you whoosh and attack in one fluid charge. She's reeling from the imapct of your solid body against her guard and you press your advantage, twisting and writhing in forms you can't remember learning as you slice away in all directions against her infuriatingly perfect guard.

You let loose a roar and cloak yourself in red, pushing soul power through your arms and legs in order to hit betty with more strength than she can stand; the impact of both your blades sending the grass flying through the air like long green rain.

The baseball esque strike launches her from her feet despite the guard and you grin ferally until the old woman disapears in midair with a whoosh, the hair on the back of your neck stands up as you fail to percieve just where she has retreated to.

But you duck.

A blade whizzing by your head causing you to turn and stab. Betty impossibly spry as she curves her bdoy around your blade like a reed. Her sword sticks in the dirt and she uses it to vault into your face; the souls of her feet glowing blue as they slam into your face and send you tumbling end over end through the dirt.

You growl and push off the ground with your offhand just as your "mother" stabs into the ground where you back was a second before, momentum and unatural strength allowing you to push yourself from ground to the old tiled roof of the shrine.

Breath is hard to come by, despite your apparent youth. At least your foe is also covered in sweat and panting; so you've achieved something at least. Unfortunately, aside form Juushiro's applause damaging his mother's pride. You haven't landed the cut you need.

Instead of reacting to Betty as she whooshes towards you beyond your perception, you wait for it. Focusing your senses, including the weird soul sense thing you have you feel her coming at you like a bat out of hell.

You hear the wind whistling across her blade and the ruffling of her kimono as the very air is split in twain.

You taste the displaced pollen and grasses.

You smell her strange perfume as her blade strikes you dead through the chest, impaling you upon it with ease. Unfortunately, you are acutely aware of every inch of folded steel as it penetrates your flesh and guts. Before feeling it bounce off your bone and emerge from your back.

When you open your eyes, the blurring of your vision sends stabs of fear through you. Even as Betty looks at you with red faced disapointment from her position in front of you on the roof.

It is not red faced through shame or embaressment, such was the torrent of blood from your mouth in the moments between your notice, she had a crimson mask to go with the torrent around your feet.

"After what you've showed me, this is plain foolish Sukaetto. Your instinct for battle was imprssive, yet you've seemed to turn it off. Gambling with your own body without a sense of your opponent's abilities?" She shakes her head, "If you had come to me as a child, I'd have beaten such a notion from your head."

The blade within you retreats, freeing you from it's agonising support. Then you fall, body going limp as your lifeflows like a river. Tiles shatter under your full weight before you bounce off the roof into the arms of Juushiro, his hands glowing green as he begins patching you up with some kind of healing spell.

"Get her back on her feet, then put up a barrier Juushiro." Betty calls down, "She's got a warrior soul. She'll keep trying until she runs out of time or life."

From your blurred perspective you can only see him, as a series of conflicting emotions against a pitch black sky. After listening to nothing but the strange hum of his healing and focusing your sixth sense on the surroundings and the peculiar feleing of your guts being reconstructed by magic, your brother finally speaks; "Sukaretto-chan... do you want to continue?"

"Of course." You growl, "God needs me. So I need to be strong."

He gives you that smile that makes your heart flip, but his eyes aren't quiteas glimmering as usual. "Well stop holding back. She's going to-"

"Barrier, Juushiro." Your mother announces as Juushiro disapears into a whoosh. A short incantation allowing him to encase the shrine and it's surrounding area in a barrier of orange. Fascinating, but distracting.

Her voice is almost hollow sounding as she calls down to you, as if two voices are speaking in one. Her tiny frame has begun to glow blue/white in the way yours does when you go all out. This feels bad.

"Sukaretto, you have done nothing but preach of your God's might, but I have found you wanting. Let me show you the power you will not to reach and conquer outside this district." She pauses and holds her sword abover her head into the air, "Cry, Gurei u~idō " She whispers as the inside of the barrier becomes a blizzard of blues and whites under the sheer wieght of her soul. You can feel your legs tremble and threaten to buckle beneath her sheer power, similar to what her son''s did at the bandit encampment.

It is time to be David, because standing oppoite you; wielding a small knife that is designed to reach around blocks and strike at the fingers and hands of the opponent - is Goliath. Beatrice Ukitake, all frailness gone. Looking tired, but very lethal as her small eyes stare right through you into the very threads of your soul.

You whoosh away before Betty even moves, dashing in and slashing away with four low cuts while still moving. She manages to avoid them all with speed that you had yet to witness from her, the woman literally jumping off your sword and into the air - only for you to follow with a whoosh. Your blade sings as it dances with Betty's, thankfully your range allows you to keep her on the back foot in the exchange and out of reach of her strange knife.

Another whoosh and Betty is back on the ground and you're right on top of her, the tiny woman flipping and spinning around your blade and counter attacking as she hops from place to place like some kind of bizarre tiny ninja. You both dash again and this time you've anticipated her movement, standing ready to strike as she is in mid air.

Your slash catches her right along the back and sends her slamming into the shrine with a cloud of dust and a grin finds it's way onto your face. You beat her at her own game, she might quicker and more skilled; but you out thought and outfought her and with the -

She stands, her kimono slashed but the skin beneath unhamred. "Your final lesson." She says simply, "Cunning, heart, drive can all close the gap and make the difference in a close battle. But when two shinigami clash, if the power difference is too great you can't harm them whatsoever."

"So you're saying I was doomed to fail?" You spit into the goround and begin walking forward, "Fuck your lesson. I am going to cut you."

"You've already passed. But let's call this extra credit." Betty chuckles and rolls her neck to a sickening pop, "I'm very proud of you." She admits.

"I appreciate the reality check. Now let me show you the power of God."

You don't remember what you said.

But armour forms around you, huge shield appearing on your left hand around the same time a plate helmet appears around your head.

And in your hand, Lucifer

Red trails you and fans out to the side in a shimmering wall of power that makes Betty pause. In your native tongue you speak,

"O my dearest Jesus, please bless and protect us, Your Crusade Prayer Group, so that we become immune to the wicked assaults of the devil, and to any evil spirits, which may torment us in this Sacred Mission to save souls.
May we remain loyal and strong, as we persevere to keep Your Holy Name before the world and never waive in our struggle to spread the Truth of Your Holy Word."

You charge and meet your foe midway, her tiny knife is no match against the shield you bash into her face with a satisfying thunk; through the narrowed field of vision you see her peter off with a dash. In fact, you sense where she is going to be and swing your mace downwards in that spot.

You hit her, hard.

Lucifer sends her tumbling into the gorund with the force of your shield bash and the brutal almost casual slam of your mace. Dust is kicked and swirls around the barrier's interior as you feel Betty desperately dash away and keep surrounding you. forming a living tornado of blades that all bounce of your armour and shield. Each one is added, to a stockpile you can feel. Like some kind of vault within your own soul power reservoir.

She misteps again and the dust clearing lets you see the glowing red light of your shield's cross reflecting off the blood and sweat stained form of Betty. You pull pack and step forward, throwing that hidden reservoir of power, your soul energy, your weight and your phsyical might behind one swing. The technique is flawless, you step forward and bring the momentum of all these different source to bear.

You clobber Betty so hard that she goes flying like a missile despite her crossed arms and attempt at blocking with her knife. When she impacts the barrier you see cracks forming against it and her body collapses to the floor, her soul power plumetting as she falls from the air.

Juushiro's barrier disapears and he dashes to catch his mother faster than you can ever hope to percieve, his hands already glowing green with his healing spell. He does his work with his back to you, giving you a moment to catch your own breath from within your suit of armour.

Amen You mutter before falling forward. Armour peeling from your skin in huge ragged chunks, like steel cheery blossoms blooming in Spring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAQMJZeYSe8

As the ground rises up to meet you in a sea of darkness you can't help but wonder;

Why would I think that?

I'm afraid I can't answer that Sukaretto-Sama. Lucifer says through his helmet as you fall into his tender yet metal encased arms. As your steel skin has stripped away, you notice you're back in the black religious garb once again.

The surroundings have shifted too, leaving you and Lucifer in the air, between the giant moon and the continent spanning cathedral below. This time no choir sings, allowing you to linger in the moment of silence. Perfect and true as the ethereal white skyline around your moon wraps around you like a blanket.

Every so often, like a giant slow heartbeat, Lucifer's many wings flap to keep you airborne. This position, torn between cathedral and moon feels exactly how you have felt since dying... a sense of unreality? Division? Helpless comfort?

Are you cofortable Sukaretto-Sama?

Yes. Very much so.

We have around eight hours until you awaken. We can remain here, explore perhaps or I could answer what questions I can.

Lucifer seems to read your thoughts as you descend/ascend to the cathedral with a few lazy flaps of wings.

So you're Lucifer. The Lucifer? is the most tactful way you can describe it as you seem to phase through and ornate glass dome that is coloured each and every part of the rainbow.

I am and am not. He responds as you both touch down on the reddish brown wood that seems to stretch out forever. All around you is White, the marble blocks being scrubbed clean by the hands of thousands of blonde haired blue eyed angels. Each one is no larger than the size of your shin or forearm, yet they all work in unison.

Are you limited in what you can say somehow?

He looks at you and you feel like he's smiling sadly, Rules are rules Sukaretto-Sama. I am constrained by powers far beyond ours. A pause A sermonis starting, would you like to listen? He asks.

That sounds nice. What's the sermon?

Well Sukaretto-Sama, I think you'll find that it's one of your favourites.

The two of you take a seat in the empty cathedral, Lucifer sitting just far enough that he can tuck his wings in behind him. His helmeted head turns to you, We call this sermon, ttruth above comfort.

A black man, the first you've seen since death makes his way to the bronze pulpit. His garb is priestly; but not totally accurate from what you can pick out. There is no collar, nor rosary or crucifix. But Lucifer makes no moves as he passes and begins praying to himself.

Why are you still helmeted? Surely you-

Father would forgive this small slight. He knows my head is bowed forever in shame and humility. He brings a gauntlet up and places it gently on your shoulde,r You are not yet ready for me to remove my helmet. But I have faith that you will be one day.

You resist the ruge to pout, but do cross your arms and glare, Nothing about this makes sense. If you're me and I'm you. Then why can't I see you?

As sharp as ever... You should ponder on that, Sukaretto-Sama. But the sermon is starting.

The Priest removes his glasses and spreads his arms,

"In life, we feel like Alice. Perpetually tumbling down the rabbit hole. In fact, right now I see it in your eyes." His gaze is unwavering and focused in on yours, the weight and certainty of it unnerving. It is the eyes of gospel. "You have the look of someone expecting to wake up. Ironically, that isn't far from the truth."

He stops and adresses you, "Young lady do you believe in fate?"

Yes

He smiles, an easy expression for him, but something about his joy and relief sets your guard up further, "Course you do! You're in church ain't ya? Let me tell you all why you're here today. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I’m talking about?

No

He shakes his head and you feel the disapointment of a father, of The Father and Lucifer weighing down upon you. "It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work… when you go to church… when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth."

He has dropped all pretense of talking to a flcok now, this is just a one way onversation between himself and you; the pulpit is forgotten as he steps out from it and begins walking closer, " Like everyone else you have thrown yourself into bondage. Into a prison of your own design."

The Truth Will Set You Free Lucifer says sadly.

"It will set both of you free." The Priest says, disapearing into a red flame mid stride before being snuffed out by a giant's invisible breath.

Our time grows short

> He seems lonely- "How can I visit you more?"

> "Lucifer, What was my name?"

> So if I find this truth, it helps us both. We might need to work together.
