We need to kill it.

And we're the only ones left alive to do it, Troopers. Before more of those things crawl out from whatever antedeluvian depths they spawn from.

We'll bury the cooling corpses of the command staff, the technicians and the troopers later. And at least if we do not, there'll be no bodies at all left to bury.

We're bringing some additional CAP units online. Saving the INC centre was a good move. Technician Willersby tells me tell you - with exaggearted arm movements imagined here, Troopers - that he doesnt know how effective the wireless control scheme will be if the "animants" are somehow able to directly eat the control signals.

Hope for the best. If the units get isolated they'll automatically enter sleep mode. Get near them and reboot them by waving your personal ID in front of them a few times. The chipbrains does the rest.

Haven't heard anything from the building for a while, but the lights out here getting somewhat peculiar. IF you happen to take a step into some sort of alternate reality, make sure you don't cause any annoying localized timespace paradoxes or some-such. We don't have the ressources to shift though fractically cascading alternate timelines right now.

And yes, I realize telling you this borders on maddening but I don't know what these things can do, last time they almost ate the BT and Gerean isn't here to shout proper orders.

Get in there, shoot anything that looks even vaguely suspecious or just twitches too much and then report back. Shut down the primary reactor outflows too if you can. My hunch and Willersby dramatic graphs make it obvious our recent spate of murderous arachnid/bug problems correlates to the oscillating power output.

And dammit, I told you last time - someone find my damn coffee! It has to be in this base somewhere and I certainly can't get any in the officers mess AFTER YOU BLEW IT UP.

Eventually, we must bring down the armor doors and bring a stop to this slow cancer festering in our powerlines.

Burn it all, root and branch, and then wait for the rapid reaction force to arrive. Good news is they'll be on edge after losing contact with this installation.

Bad news is it the fastest anyone not a lost patrol wandering home to find no R&R is 12 hours. Hopefully, the deadzone surrounding us piqued the curiousity of High Command's enshrined talking heads. If you're just starting, you'll only be one type of trooper. Having lost two characters in previous sessions, I've had the option of taking on additional trooper types at the cost of Focus, which is kind of this game's equivalent of MP in most RPGs.

Private Martina and Technicials Willersby and Rhodemeyer is riding in the BT, but it's not gone through service for a bit and there's some erratic pings on the main sensor swings. At your order, Willersby and Rhodemeyer will attempt to ISOLATE and SCAN the anomaly but that /will/ lock down the power system of the entire BT until they're done. If you need heavy support, don't ask them to scan.

Focus is gone once its gone, and does not restore unless there is a PAUSE and so time to CATCH YOUR BREATH. In this way, you may wish to pick your engagements and munitions. Attracting more attention if not neccessary means no breaks.

Sometimes, Focus is restored when events happen. You will know when.

Your FIELD KIT has 2 uses, and can heal 1d6+margin Fieldcraft Roll HP or Focus. Rations, if any are available, can also restore focus.

Friendly Support from commanders, others, medics and personnel can also help you focus. These are not currently available to players, because the misson commander of Echo 11 who had the ability to declare FOCUSED FIRE and restore +2d6 Focus to all troopers is currently 6 feet in the ground, having died in a calamitous explosion last map.

You focus is very precious. You may wish to hoard it. It is not so precious it should not be used, but it is important.

The damaged is ROLLED initially. In every hex away from the point of impact, this damage is divided by increments of 3, rounding up.

More dangerous explosive payloads exist where the spread divisor is lower.

This is not a problem and no issue, but merely note that 4 points would translate to +1 Mobility, +2 Firearms. Running in all this gear is hard, and learning to do it well takes effort and focus.

Simply change your Fieldcraft to its proper rating (10) and your firearms to its proper rating (12) and you are good to go. We all start somewhere!

This still enables you to sprint half-way across the world, dodge incoming fire with Focus, overwatch a counter-attack that lands more often than not and climb obstacles.

Is it possible to fire through friendlies without hurting them? If so:

How do multiple shots with this weapon work? It doesn't have a fraction like the other guns yet I'm assuming it's a machine gun and not a single shot weapon.

You simply benefit more from doing it. Rather than neccessitating spending multiple ammo to achieve a +1 benefit, you get +1 for 1 ammo.

This is because the MG is technically firing 2200 rounds a minute if you go full auto. There's no need for us to track that, and so instead, the autofire feature assumes that the ammo count is mildly abstract.

A 6 shot burst for you gives a +6, consumes 6 ammo. For effeciencies and utilities sake, you may wish to designate that some of this ammo be spent on widening the cone of your shot. 1 ammo to generate a cone, 2 amo to make it a 2 hex, 3 ammo for a 3hex (some 60 degrees firing arc).

As for timezones, they happen. You're welcome anyway, Trooper. Coordinators exist for a reason, and your company is always a joy. The nature of these games do mean that there isn't a very high pressure on participation on a minute by minute basis.

For precisely rolling you roll 3d6 per attack. Bursts are added to your base skill - so you don't roll per shot, you roll a total. The general effeciacy of your roll generates damage, extra hits and so on. 3d6 per action.

Not a tap, consumes an Ap. Once SETUP properly, a suppressor may further spend 1 AP to get effectively infinite overwatches against anyone moving into their firing arc. You don't need to setup simply to fire the weapon.

To fully and honestly answer this query - Death is part of the Experience.

Without the prospect of potentially dying, you lose a lot investment. You are meant to consider the actions you take in light of the fact that consequences do happen.

Did I fully expect someone to flash vaporize the command HQ and cause the mission CO to die? No. I did not. But I also trust you all enough to honestly accept that the freedom of action in these games are yours to wield as you would like.

There are, however, some subtle anti-frustration features.

If you do DIE, you can reroll and keep your total achieved Talents and Perks, at -1 Focus per extra Talent past the first. This reduces your FOCUS, but it does allow you to keep something you thought was Cool.

Characters advance on a point based scaling, and once you die an lose everything you do lose everything. But I subtly tinker with the baseline stats of NEW UNITS every new map, so as to keep them at least within the median of ability. This means that you might die a Firearms 12 trooper and respawn a Firearms 13, simply because RESEARCH & ADVANCEMENT have gotten ahead.

You ar also working togther as an organization and the UNCC is not untrained rabble. Group wide improvements are possible once this current crisis blows over, which again takes the sting out of the death.

Dying should be seen as the end of one story, and the beginning of another one.
